  1. I bet I'm recording right now. Look at that. But I want to stop.

  2. Good morning.

  3. Well, I am starting late today, but I'm going to try and start anyway.

  4. And let me remind myself where we were last week.

  5. We started on a series of lessons about restoring damaged relationships.

  6. And if you don't have a handout, let me offer you one.

  7. In fact, let me just give those to you and hand them out as you see fit.

  8. And you can put them back over there.

  9. There are some more handouts in the back, too.

  10. And last week, we covered some introductory material.

  11. I started looking at the story of Joseph and his brothers.

  12. And I spoke of four steps in restoring damaged relationships.

  13. And suggested that, though you could talk about that subject of restoring damaged relationships in various ways from a biblical perspective,

  14. that this was one way to try and put all the material together.

  15. And...

  16. Hey! Hi, Ben!

  17. Hello!

  18. Uh...

  19. You got the recorder. That's good.

  20. I got the recorder from Matt.

  21. Excuse me just a moment.

  22. And...

  23. Shortly, we may have some video.

  24. Video.

  25. Uh...

  26. Just a visual.

  27. Cool.

  28. And...

  29. So we started talking about what I call a first step in restoring damaged relationships.

  30. And that is dealing with the anger that people almost always feel when they're in a meaningful relationship

  31. and some other person in a relationship hurts them.

  32. Uh...

  33. It is natural, and I think not necessarily sinful, to get angry as a result.

  34. Um...

  35. But, I suggested that, uh...

  36. We should not stay angry.

  37. The Bible tells us to, uh...

  38. Renounce anger against, uh...

  39. Others.

  40. And that that's a first step that we can take ourselves.

  41. Whatever the other people are.

  42. We can take that step.

  43. Now, I didn't provide any opportunity for, uh...

  44. Questions last week.

  45. Uh...

  46. But, two people did ask me questions during the week.

  47. Um...

  48. And, in fact,

  49. The two people both asked the same question.

  50. So I thought it would be good to start off with that question

  51. and, uh...

  52. Give those of you who want to a chance to ask questions at the beginning.

  53. And, uh...

  54. We'll go on from there.

  55. So...

  56. The, uh...

  57. One person emailed me a question, and I'll read it to you.

  58. Um...

  59. I did wonder about renouncing anger.

  60. What about the case of repeated offenses?

  61. Is there a distinction between godly indignation and unrighteous anger?

  62. Should godly indignation be, uh...

  63. Dispersed with after a few days in all cases?

  64. And that statement may be up on the screen sometime soon.

  65. Um...

  66. Whereas I had said something like this.

  67. If you are angry with someone for more than a few days

  68. and are not in the process of renouncing anger,

  69. then you are probably sinning.

  70. Ah, I think we're getting really close.

  71. Um...

  72. So...

  73. Uh...

  74. I'll repeat those more or less if you want.

  75. If you need it.

  76. But what do you think?

  77. Uh...

  78. Is the statement that I just made again...

  79. Uh...

  80. Do you think that's biblical?

  81. Or do you think it's missing something?

  82. Uh...

  83. Once again, the person said,

  84. I wonder about your treatment of renouncing anger.

  85. Um...

  86. Is...

  87. I'm going to put a cable on your map.

  88. Thank you.

  89. Thank you.

  90. I'll try not to trick over it.

  91. Okay.

  92. Uh...

  93. I'm going to need that closer, I think.

  94. Well, um...

  95. If you have any thoughts,

  96. you can share those.

  97. You know what I'm saying.

  98. Uh...

  99. Or, uh...

  100. If you have a different question,

  101. you could ask that too.

  102. And I'll give you a moment to think.

  103. And you know what?

  104. Let's pray.

  105. Heavenly Father,

  106. as we get started this morning,

  107. and as we deal with technology,

  108. above all, Lord,

  109. we want to meet with you.

  110. We want to know you better

  111. and experience your love

  112. and grow up more

  113. as your sons and daughters.

  114. Help us to follow your example

  115. of loving others

  116. and being involved in it.

  117. reconciling with us.

  118. Help us now, Lord,

  119. we ask.

  120. In Jesus' name.

  121. Amen.

  122. Amen.

  123. Boy, things went so smoothly

  124. with this last week.

  125. But, uh...

  126. That's no guarantee, is it?

  127. You know, I would say

  128. from one of those questions,

  129. you said,

  130. biblically,

  131. we know that that's what

  132. we should do,

  133. is reconciliation.

  134. But personally, for me,

  135. what we should biblically do

  136. isn't always what's easiest to do

  137. or what my very sinful nature

  138. wants to do.

  139. So it's one of the hardest things

  140. I struggle with

  141. because I want to stay indignant

  142. that I've been wronged

  143. in a relationship.

  144. And that person should make

  145. the first move,

  146. right?

  147. The first move

  148. to come to me

  149. and say,

  150. gee, I'm sorry I wronged you.

  151. And so it's a really hard thing

  152. for me to truly say,

  153. I give it up to the Lord

  154. and let it go.

  155. So,

  156. I know I should do it,

  157. so it isn't.

  158. I know

  159. reconciliation

  160. is a biblical

  161. command,

  162. so to speak,

  163. but

  164. my nature just doesn't

  165. want to go there.

  166. And

  167. I'm just,

  168. I think,

  169. Kirsten was using

  170. the term

  171. reconciliation

  172. in a certain way.

  173. Well,

  174. maybe including

  175. a whole process

  176. which I call

  177. forgiveness

  178. and repentance

  179. and sin.

  180. For restoring

  181. the relationship.

  182. If,

  183. once again,

  184. if you have a handout,

  185. you can look

  186. and see this here,

  187. or if you don't have one,

  188. we can certainly

  189. get you one.

  190. I suggest

  191. thinking of

  192. the restoration

  193. of the relationship

  194. process

  195. in terms of

  196. four steps,

  197. and I call

  198. the third one

  199. reconciliation.

  200. But,

  201. you know,

  202. it's just

  203. however you define it.

  204. You talk about

  205. the whole thing

  206. is reconciliation

  207. or forgiveness.

  208. things.

  209. But,

  210. what

  211. Kirsten

  212. is saying

  213. accurately

  214. is that

  215. many times

  216. when we've

  217. been hurt

  218. and

  219. we're angry,

  220. yeah,

  221. righteous,

  222. we think

  223. it's righteous

  224. indignation,

  225. we think

  226. we have a

  227. right

  228. to be angry.

  229. We are,

  230. we're hurt,

  231. and yes,

  232. let the other

  233. person take

  234. the first step.

  235. And,

  236. what I'm

  237. suggesting

  238. is,

  239. and I haven't

  240. said this point

  241. clearly yet,

  242. is that the

  243. first two steps,

  244. renouncing anger

  245. and responding

  246. in love,

  247. are things

  248. that we can

  249. do

  250. whatever

  251. the attitude

  252. or will

  253. of the other

  254. person is.

  255. the step

  256. that I call

  257. reconciliation

  258. involves

  259. interaction,

  260. discussion,

  261. honesty,

  262. asking for

  263. forgiveness,

  264. being forgiven,

  265. those kinds

  266. of things,

  267. which you need

  268. two willing

  269. parties to

  270. do well.

  271. But,

  272. I'm suggesting

  273. right in line

  274. with what

  275. Kirsten said

  276. that,

  277. yes,

  278. a first step

  279. that God

  280. calls us

  281. to take

  282. when a

  283. relationship's

  284. been damaged

  285. and we're

  286. angry,

  287. is to

  288. say,

  289. Lord,

  290. help me,

  291. I'm going

  292. to,

  293. help me get

  294. over this

  295. and I

  296. tried to

  297. make clear

  298. last week

  299. that that

  300. isn't necessarily

  301. going to be

  302. an instantaneous

  303. thing.

  304. Lord,

  305. take this

  306. anger away.

  307. Ah,

  308. and you'll

  309. never be

  310. angry about

  311. what happened

  312. again.

  313. Rather,

  314. I'm suggesting

  315. that's the

  316. start of a

  317. process.

  318. That's right.

  319. All right.

  320. Now,

  321. let me say

  322. one more

  323. thing.

  324. Because,

  325. the only

  326. question I

  327. got following

  328. last week's

  329. lesson was

  330. about this.

  331. I decided

  332. to talk to

  333. somebody,

  334. they weren't

  335. in the

  336. class,

  337. but to

  338. talk to

  339. somebody

  340. about it.

  341. And they

  342. had a lot

  343. to tell me.

  344. And part

  345. of what they

  346. were telling

  347. me is this.

  348. what about

  349. the steps

  350. a person

  351. needs to

  352. take if

  353. they've

  354. been hurt

  355. for their

  356. own protection?

  357. And maybe

  358. as I talked

  359. about it with

  360. them, I was

  361. coming across

  362. as saying,

  363. well, let's

  364. just say this.

  365. You're in an

  366. abusive relationship

  367. at work,

  368. at home,

  369. hopefully not

  370. a church,

  371. but wherever

  372. it's been.

  373. And,

  374. I think they

  375. were saying

  376. to me,

  377. well, Matt,

  378. the first

  379. step is,

  380. you know,

  381. get safe

  382. yourself.

  383. Get out

  384. of the

  385. abuse.

  386. Can I

  387. regroup

  388. your forgiveness?

  389. I'm sorry,

  390. I'm laughing,

  391. because I

  392. had this

  393. lousy

  394. experience

  395. yesterday.

  396. I was

  397. working on

  398. preparing my

  399. lesson for

  400. today,

  401. and all

  402. of a sudden

  403. Windows says,

  404. we are doing

  405. an update.

  406. We are

  407. reconfiguring

  408. your computer.

  409. And so,

  410. for an

  411. hour or

  412. two, I

  413. couldn't

  414. work on

  415. my computer

  416. while it

  417. reconfigured

  418. things.

  419. And last

  420. night, it

  421. was done,

  422. and I got

  423. back to

  424. work, and

  425. everything

  426. seemed fine.

  427. But maybe

  428. not everything

  429. is quite

  430. fine.

  431. Worked last

  432. week, but

  433. with this

  434. new

  435. configuration of

  436. Windows 10,

  437. who knows

  438. what's

  439. happening.

  440. But it's

  441. all right.

  442. You can

  443. keep working,

  444. I'll try and

  445. ignore you.

  446. So, hi.

  447. Hi, Sam.

  448. Hi.

  449. What's your

  450. name?

  451. My name's

  452. Matt.

  453. Hi, Matt.

  454. If you'd like,

  455. you can have a

  456. handout.

  457. help.

  458. And so, the

  459. approach I was

  460. taking kind

  461. of assumed

  462. that you

  463. weren't being

  464. abused, you

  465. know, and the

  466. hurt wasn't

  467. actively

  468. on a regular

  469. basis.

  470. If you're

  471. assuming that,

  472. yes, then

  473. get safe,

  474. and then

  475. you can

  476. look to

  477. God and

  478. ask for

  479. help in

  480. doing what

  481. he wants

  482. you to do

  483. to restore

  484. the relationship,

  485. which may

  486. never happen

  487. if the

  488. other person

  489. isn't living.

  490. But,

  491. yeah.

  492. Any other

  493. follow-up

  494. comments on

  495. that?

  496. Yeah.

  497. Any other

  498. questions at

  499. this point?

  500. So, I'll

  501. try one.

  502. Yeah.

  503. Thank you

  504. for doing

  505. this class.

  506. And again,

  507. I thought you

  508. did a good

  509. job last

  510. week.

  511. The part

  512. that left

  513. me uncomfortable

  514. last week is

  515. that, you

  516. know, we

  517. called Jacob's

  518. relationship

  519. broken, we

  520. called even

  521. Joseph's

  522. relationship

  523. broken, and

  524. I understand

  525. why.

  526. But it

  527. just didn't

  528. sit well

  529. with me

  530. because through

  531. Jacob and

  532. the twelve

  533. tribes of

  534. Israel, through

  535. Joseph, a

  536. whole nation

  537. was saved.

  538. So, even

  539. while we

  540. consider it

  541. broken, God

  542. was doing

  543. something good.

  544. So, I

  545. constantly go

  546. back to

  547. Peter's

  548. dream, don't

  549. call it

  550. broken what

  551. God has

  552. used for

  553. good.

  554. So, I

  555. just, I

  556. don't know, it

  557. didn't sit

  558. well with me.

  559. Okay, yeah,

  560. yeah.

  561. So, God

  562. had a

  563. purpose, that

  564. he used the

  565. sin of

  566. Joseph's

  567. brothers, and

  568. I think the

  569. sin of Joseph,

  570. and the sin

  571. of Jacob.

  572. You know, God

  573. used that, just

  574. like he used

  575. the sin of the

  576. religious and

  577. Roman authorities

  578. in the day of

  579. Jesus, you

  580. know, so

  581. that Jesus

  582. ended up being

  583. crucified and

  584. dying for our

  585. sins.

  586. So, God

  587. at least

  588. uses good

  589. for his

  590. purposes, and

  591. he's not

  592. surprised by

  593. it.

  594. In fact, he

  595. knows the

  596. future.

  597. Some would

  598. say he

  599. ordains all

  600. the sin to

  601. be happened,

  602. or that's a

  603. big question I

  604. have a hard

  605. time dealing

  606. with.

  607. But,

  608. yes, God

  609. used it.

  610. But, I

  611. think we'll

  612. see that

  613. Joseph, by

  614. some years

  615. later, both

  616. knew that

  617. God was

  618. using him

  619. for his

  620. purposes, and

  621. yet, he, I

  622. believe, worked

  623. really hard to

  624. restore the

  625. relationship with

  626. his brothers.

  627. He wanted a

  628. good relationship

  629. with them again.

  630. people.

  631. And so, God,

  632. you know, can

  633. use bad

  634. things in our

  635. lives, including

  636. broken, damaged

  637. relationships, for

  638. good.

  639. Oh, my, he's

  640. used them in

  641. my life over

  642. and over again

  643. to get my

  644. attention

  645. about

  646. something.

  647. good.

  648. I've worked in

  649. the New Haven

  650. school system

  651. for 11 years.

  652. I taught

  653. science, a

  654. career in my

  655. school.

  656. school.

  657. And, uh, uh,

  658. yeah.

  659. And, um, but

  660. I retired a

  661. year ago.

  662. But last

  663. week, as

  664. Debbie and I

  665. were driving

  666. through New

  667. Haven, I

  668. drove by my

  669. old high

  670. school, and

  671. anger came

  672. up with

  673. anything.

  674. and, as

  675. best as I

  676. can discern, it

  677. had to do

  678. with a

  679. long-standing

  680. resentment

  681. that I had

  682. against the

  683. New Haven

  684. public school

  685. system.

  686. Rightly or

  687. wrongly, I

  688. think a lot

  689. of their

  690. policies and

  691. decisions

  692. actually hurt

  693. students instead

  694. of helping

  695. them.

  696. And I, you

  697. know, saw

  698. things that I

  699. thought were

  700. bad to be

  701. done over and

  702. over again in

  703. my 11 years.

  704. You know, half

  705. the faculty means

  706. I went to, you

  707. know, I go

  708. away, oh, no,

  709. you know, ah!

  710. But I never

  711. realized until

  712. last week that

  713. the anger I

  714. was feeling about

  715. those bad

  716. policies, the

  717. developed into

  718. a resentment

  719. against some

  720. individuals and

  721. the system as

  722. a whole.

  723. And then I

  724. could remember,

  725. you know, my

  726. wife saying,

  727. ah, Matt, you

  728. know, in social

  729. sense, whenever

  730. education comes

  731. up, you know,

  732. you go on your

  733. rampage, you

  734. know, about what

  735. should be done

  736. and what's being

  737. done wrong.

  738. And, you

  739. know, obviously

  740. she was

  741. implying I

  742. did it in an

  743. unhelpful,

  744. inappropriate way.

  745. And, you

  746. know, I was

  747. just passionate

  748. about doing

  749. what was right

  750. for students,

  751. right?

  752. Well, that was

  753. a piece of it.

  754. But a piece of

  755. it was that I

  756. had not dealt

  757. with my

  758. righteous anger,

  759. assuming some

  760. of it was

  761. righteous.

  762. And instead

  763. of dealing

  764. with it, you

  765. know, I got

  766. angry this

  767. time, angry

  768. that time,

  769. angry this

  770. time, to the

  771. point where

  772. this resentment

  773. built up that

  774. not only affected

  775. me at work,

  776. but affected me

  777. outside of work,

  778. affected my

  779. social

  780. relationships

  781. with other

  782. people,

  783. provided a

  784. foothold for

  785. safety.

  786. So, I

  787. pray, Lord,

  788. help me,

  789. let go of

  790. that anger

  791. and resentment

  792. that had been

  793. percolating in me

  794. all these years.

  795. so this

  796. class has been

  797. good for at

  798. least one

  799. person.

  800. Now,

  801. this wasn't,

  802. this isn't as

  803. clear as the

  804. story of Joseph

  805. and his

  806. brothers,

  807. but my

  808. anger,

  809. staying angry,

  810. not dealing

  811. with it,

  812. leading to

  813. resentment,

  814. was wrong.

  815. But God

  816. eventually used

  817. it to get

  818. my attention

  819. after I'd

  820. learned some

  821. more things

  822. and did

  823. another step

  824. of his work

  825. in my heart

  826. making me a

  827. little bit

  828. more like

  829. Jesus.

  830. So,

  831. yeah?

  832. Is there a

  833. particular passage

  834. in the Bible

  835. that you could

  836. use when we

  837. can't feel

  838. like that?

  839. Wow,

  840. what a great

  841. segue.

  842. Yes,

  843. do you have

  844. the handout

  845. there,

  846. Chuck?

  847. Okay,

  848. so,

  849. last week

  850. in renouncing

  851. anger,

  852. I think there

  853. were scriptures

  854. over the five

  855. how-tos under

  856. there,

  857. right?

  858. Okay,

  859. so the first

  860. one,

  861. you know,

  862. I believe

  863. suggests,

  864. hey,

  865. when you

  866. stay angry

  867. with someone

  868. or a group

  869. of people,

  870. a system,

  871. whatever it

  872. is,

  873. one,

  874. realize,

  875. ah,

  876. God doesn't

  877. want me to

  878. stay angry

  879. with these

  880. people.

  881. world,

  882. and maybe

  883. I'll focus

  884. on that,

  885. on people.

  886. God,

  887. I believe,

  888. does not

  889. want us

  890. to stay

  891. angry with

  892. individuals

  893. or groups.

  894. So,

  895. first acknowledge

  896. that and

  897. say,

  898. God,

  899. help me

  900. let go

  901. of this.

  902. So,

  903. that's the

  904. first step.

  905. Second step

  906. is,

  907. you know,

  908. don't keep

  909. going over

  910. it in your

  911. mind.

  912. And I

  913. give,

  914. you know,

  915. references

  916. to the

  917. love chapter,

  918. 1 Corinthians

  919. 13,

  920. that suggests

  921. that love

  922. doesn't do

  923. that.

  924. And love

  925. doesn't,

  926. love hopes

  927. that things

  928. can be better.

  929. There's no

  930. guarantee that

  931. things will be

  932. better in our

  933. broken relationships,

  934. but we can at

  935. least hope that.

  936. So we don't

  937. have to say,

  938. oh,

  939. they did that

  940. to me before,

  941. and they're

  942. going to do

  943. it again.

  944. Rather,

  945. oh,

  946. Lord,

  947. change me,

  948. change that.

  949. Step four

  950. is,

  951. remember that

  952. I've sinned

  953. too.

  954. In a damaged

  955. relationship,

  956. in any

  957. relationship,

  958. you know,

  959. there's,

  960. being sinners,

  961. you know,

  962. it's almost

  963. guaranteed that

  964. there's fault

  965. on both sides.

  966. And God

  967. calls us

  968. to forgive

  969. others

  970. as he

  971. forgives us.

  972. And forgiveness

  973. can mean a lot

  974. of different things,

  975. but,

  976. here,

  977. in that

  978. context,

  979. I think it

  980. at least

  981. means,

  982. you know,

  983. not staying

  984. angry with

  985. them.

  986. And Matthew,

  987. the,

  988. Chuck,

  989. there's a

  990. reference to

  991. Matthew there

  992. with step,

  993. or how to

  994. for,

  995. also.

  996. Yeah,

  997. so that's the

  998. parable of the

  999. unforgiving servant.

  1000. And if you,

  1001. you're a person,

  1002. you know,

  1003. who kind of

  1004. delights in getting

  1005. angry,

  1006. you know,

  1007. feeling that

  1008. righteous

  1009. sanctification,

  1010. you might

  1011. want to

  1012. read that

  1013. over,

  1014. because it's

  1015. kind of like

  1016. a real

  1017. negative

  1018. warning about

  1019. don't do

  1020. that.

  1021. God doesn't

  1022. like it.

  1023. It's not

  1024. good.

  1025. And then,

  1026. how to's,

  1027. four and five,

  1028. are positive

  1029. things.

  1030. last week I

  1031. would have

  1032. projected this

  1033. on the screen

  1034. for you.

  1035. Today I

  1036. can't.

  1037. And so,

  1038. Is the

  1039. projector

  1040. broken?

  1041. They're not

  1042. communicating well.

  1043. Oh,

  1044. wow.

  1045. The computer,

  1046. yes,

  1047. these things

  1048. happen sometimes.

  1049. But,

  1050. step four is,

  1051. oh yes,

  1052. forgive as

  1053. God has

  1054. forgiven you.

  1055. How to

  1056. is pray

  1057. for those

  1058. who have

  1059. treated you

  1060. badly.

  1061. And for me,

  1062. this has been

  1063. the most

  1064. practical,

  1065. positive step.

  1066. When I've

  1067. been in the

  1068. process of

  1069. letting go of

  1070. my anger

  1071. against somebody,

  1072. when I

  1073. start

  1074. replaying,

  1075. you know,

  1076. what they

  1077. did to me,

  1078. being committed

  1079. not to do

  1080. that,

  1081. and when I'm

  1082. aware of it,

  1083. saying,

  1084. ah,

  1085. yes,

  1086. God wants

  1087. me instead

  1088. to pray

  1089. for these

  1090. people.

  1091. Well,

  1092. one,

  1093. that brings

  1094. God into

  1095. the picture.

  1096. Not just

  1097. what they

  1098. did against

  1099. me,

  1100. it's,

  1101. yeah,

  1102. my relationship

  1103. with them,

  1104. me,

  1105. them,

  1106. and God.

  1107. And that

  1108. changes things.

  1109. So,

  1110. praying for

  1111. them in a

  1112. positive way

  1113. is,

  1114. I think,

  1115. one of the

  1116. most helpful

  1117. things.

  1118. Long answer.

  1119. Did that?

  1120. Yeah.

  1121. Okay.

  1122. So,

  1123. by God's

  1124. grace,

  1125. even when

  1126. we've been

  1127. badly hurt

  1128. by someone,

  1129. we can get

  1130. to the point

  1131. where,

  1132. you know,

  1133. we're not

  1134. getting angry

  1135. with them

  1136. every time

  1137. we think

  1138. of them.

  1139. but that's

  1140. only,

  1141. I would say,

  1142. a first step

  1143. in restoring

  1144. the relationship.

  1145. I want to

  1146. tell you a

  1147. story.

  1148. I used to

  1149. live in

  1150. Stanford,

  1151. Connecticut,

  1152. and on

  1153. one occasion,

  1154. I,

  1155. I want to

  1156. hold off on

  1157. that for a

  1158. moment.

  1159. instead,

  1160. let's pick

  1161. up with

  1162. the story

  1163. of Joseph

  1164. and his

  1165. brothers.

  1166. Last week,

  1167. we looked

  1168. at Genesis

  1169. 37,

  1170. and you'll

  1171. find this

  1172. on,

  1173. you're using

  1174. one of the

  1175. Pew Bibles,

  1176. not one of

  1177. the Pew

  1178. Bibles,

  1179. one of the

  1180. downstairs

  1181. Bibles,

  1182. which are

  1183. different than

  1184. the Pew

  1185. Bibles,

  1186. but they're

  1187. probably not

  1188. out here

  1189. today.

  1190. So,

  1191. if you have

  1192. a Bible,

  1193. I'd encourage

  1194. you to turn

  1195. to Genesis

  1196. 37,

  1197. um,

  1198. hi Sam,

  1199. can I,

  1200. I'm looking

  1201. for a Bible.

  1202. Yeah.

  1203. Over there?

  1204. On the

  1205. bottom shelf.

  1206. That shelf

  1207. over there?

  1208. By the

  1209. way,

  1210. maybe some

  1211. of you

  1212. haven't been

  1213. able to

  1214. hear me,

  1215. but now

  1216. that we

  1217. have this

  1218. help,

  1219. and I'll

  1220. try and

  1221. stand here,

  1222. if you

  1223. still can't

  1224. hear me,

  1225. let me

  1226. know.

  1227. Any

  1228. comments

  1229. on sound?

  1230. Sound?

  1231. Yeah,

  1232. yeah,

  1233. and looking

  1234. at,

  1235. somebody who

  1236. knows about

  1237. this thing,

  1238. I just

  1239. hit it,

  1240. maybe I

  1241. turned it

  1242. off,

  1243. I was

  1244. trying to

  1245. locate it

  1246. in a place

  1247. where it

  1248. would pick

  1249. me up

  1250. from now

  1251. on.

  1252. So in

  1253. Genesis 37,

  1254. we read

  1255. how many

  1256. things

  1257. contributed

  1258. to Joseph's

  1259. brothers,

  1260. his ten

  1261. older brothers,

  1262. getting angry

  1263. with him,

  1264. and coming

  1265. to hate

  1266. him.

  1267. And then

  1268. saw how that

  1269. erupted in

  1270. violence,

  1271. they were,

  1272. they grabbed

  1273. him,

  1274. tore his

  1275. special clothing

  1276. off,

  1277. it was a

  1278. special robe

  1279. that was a

  1280. sign that

  1281. his father

  1282. loved him

  1283. more than

  1284. any of his

  1285. other brothers.

  1286. And she

  1287. proudly wore

  1288. around and

  1289. rubbed it in

  1290. their faces,

  1291. I believe,

  1292. and threw

  1293. him into a

  1294. pit,

  1295. either to

  1296. kill him

  1297. or to

  1298. let him

  1299. die,

  1300. but as

  1301. we read

  1302. at the

  1303. end of

  1304. chapter 37,

  1305. what they

  1306. ended up

  1307. doing was

  1308. selling

  1309. Joseph as

  1310. a slave,

  1311. a caravan

  1312. came by

  1313. bringing

  1314. various

  1315. goods,

  1316. it was

  1317. on its

  1318. way to

  1319. Egypt,

  1320. and

  1321. Judah,

  1322. one of

  1323. the brothers

  1324. said,

  1325. hey,

  1326. let's get

  1327. some money

  1328. out of

  1329. this,

  1330. and let's

  1331. sell him

  1332. as a

  1333. slave,

  1334. which they

  1335. did.

  1336. And off

  1337. Joseph has

  1338. taken Egypt.

  1339. And the

  1340. brothers are

  1341. thinking,

  1342. yes,

  1343. this thing

  1344. that has

  1345. made our

  1346. lives

  1347. miserable,

  1348. this person

  1349. who's

  1350. made our

  1351. lives

  1352. miserable,

  1353. is out

  1354. of the

  1355. picture

  1356. forever.

  1357. But,

  1358. they had

  1359. to convince

  1360. their father

  1361. that Joseph

  1362. was out

  1363. of the

  1364. picture

  1365. forever

  1366. and not

  1367. just

  1368. missing.

  1369. So,

  1370. I would

  1371. like it

  1372. if somebody

  1373. would

  1374. read

  1375. Genesis,

  1376. oh,

  1377. I can read

  1378. it,

  1379. I have

  1380. it here,

  1381. Genesis

  1382. 37,

  1383. starting

  1384. with verse

  1385. 31.

  1386. Then they

  1387. took

  1388. Joseph's

  1389. robe

  1390. and

  1391. slaughtered

  1392. a goat

  1393. and dipped

  1394. the robe

  1395. in the

  1396. blood.

  1397. And they

  1398. sent the

  1399. robe of

  1400. many colors

  1401. and brought

  1402. it to

  1403. their father

  1404. and said,

  1405. this we

  1406. have found,

  1407. please identify

  1408. whether it is

  1409. your son's

  1410. robe or

  1411. not.

  1412. And he

  1413. identified it

  1414. and said,

  1415. it is my

  1416. son's robe.

  1417. A fierce

  1418. animal has

  1419. devoured

  1420. him.

  1421. Joseph

  1422. is without

  1423. doubt torn

  1424. to pieces.

  1425. Then Jacob

  1426. tore his

  1427. garments and

  1428. put sackcloth

  1429. on his

  1430. loins and

  1431. mourned for

  1432. his son

  1433. many days.

  1434. Well,

  1435. it seemed

  1436. that Joseph

  1437. was out of

  1438. the picture,

  1439. even so he

  1440. was casting

  1441. a long

  1442. shadow in

  1443. the family.

  1444. But,

  1445. well,

  1446. he was out

  1447. of the

  1448. picture.

  1449. Now,

  1450. I believe

  1451. that the

  1452. story of

  1453. Joseph and

  1454. his brothers

  1455. is a

  1456. wonderful

  1457. biblical

  1458. story and

  1459. illustration

  1460. of restoring

  1461. a damaged

  1462. relationship.

  1463. But it

  1464. does not

  1465. give us

  1466. information

  1467. about every

  1468. step in

  1469. the process.

  1470. And one

  1471. of the

  1472. things we

  1473. don't see

  1474. directly

  1475. is the

  1476. brothers

  1477. getting over

  1478. their anger

  1479. towards

  1480. Joseph.

  1481. And

  1482. Joseph, I

  1483. bet, was

  1484. angry with

  1485. his brothers

  1486. after they

  1487. beat him

  1488. up and

  1489. sold him

  1490. as a

  1491. slave.

  1492. It doesn't

  1493. tell us

  1494. directly about

  1495. him getting

  1496. over that.

  1497. but the

  1498. Bible does

  1499. give us

  1500. a lot of,

  1501. I think,

  1502. indirect and

  1503. clear evidence

  1504. that Joseph

  1505. did that.

  1506. That he

  1507. eventually

  1508. followed

  1509. step one,

  1510. renouncing

  1511. anger,

  1512. and secondly,

  1513. came to the

  1514. point where he

  1515. really loved his

  1516. brothers again and

  1517. wanted a good

  1518. relationship with

  1519. them.

  1520. So, on

  1521. your handout,

  1522. you'll see

  1523. right down

  1524. around here

  1525. a number of

  1526. passages from

  1527. Genesis that

  1528. I present as

  1529. evidence that

  1530. Joseph trusted

  1531. and obeyed

  1532. God and

  1533. that God

  1534. blessed him.

  1535. And we're

  1536. going to read

  1537. just the first

  1538. one, which

  1539. is in

  1540. Genesis 39.

  1541. Again, with

  1542. the downstairs

  1543. Bible, I

  1544. think it's

  1545. page 33.

  1546. Genesis

    Genesis 39 chapter mention

  1547. chapter 39,

  1548. and I'll

  1549. read verses

  1550. 1 through

  1551. 10.

  1552. Now,

  1553. Joseph had

  1554. been brought

  1555. down to

  1556. Egypt, and

  1557. Potiphar, the

  1558. officer of

  1559. Pharaoh, the

  1560. captain of the

  1561. guard, an

  1562. Egyptian, had

  1563. bought him

  1564. from the

  1565. Ishmaelites,

  1566. who had

  1567. brought him

  1568. down there.

  1569. The Lord

  1570. was with

  1571. Joseph, and

  1572. he became

  1573. a successful

  1574. man, and

  1575. he was in

  1576. the house of

  1577. his Egyptian

  1578. master.

  1579. His master

  1580. saw that the

  1581. Lord was with

  1582. him, and

  1583. that the

  1584. Lord caused

  1585. all that he

  1586. did to

  1587. succeed in

  1588. his hands.

  1589. So, Joseph

  1590. found favor in

  1591. his sight, and

  1592. attended him,

  1593. and he

  1594. made him,

  1595. Potiphar made

  1596. Joseph, overseer

  1597. of his

  1598. house, and

  1599. put him in

  1600. charge of

  1601. all that he

  1602. had.

  1603. From the

  1604. time that he

  1605. made him

  1606. overseer in

  1607. his house, and

  1608. over all he

  1609. had, the

  1610. Lord blessed

  1611. the Egyptian's

  1612. house for

  1613. Joseph's sake.

  1614. The blessing

  1615. of the Lord

  1616. was on all

  1617. that he

  1618. had, in

  1619. the house, and

  1620. in the field.

  1621. So, he

  1622. left all that

  1623. he had in

  1624. Joseph's charge,

  1625. and because

  1626. of him, he

  1627. had no

  1628. concern about

  1629. anything but

  1630. the food he

  1631. ate.

  1632. Now, Joseph

  1633. was handsome

  1634. in form and

  1635. appearance, and

  1636. after a time, his

  1637. master's wife cast

  1638. her eyes on

  1639. Joseph and said,

  1640. Lie with me.

  1641. But, he

  1642. refused, and

  1643. said to his

  1644. master's wife,

  1645. Behold, because

  1646. of me, my

  1647. master has no

  1648. concern about

  1649. anything in the

  1650. house, and he

  1651. has put everything

  1652. that he has in

  1653. my charge.

  1654. He is not

  1655. greater in this

  1656. house than I

  1657. am, nor has

  1658. he kept back

  1659. anything from

  1660. me, except

  1661. you, because

  1662. you are his

  1663. wife.

  1664. How, then, can

  1665. I do this great

  1666. wickedness and

  1667. sin against

  1668. God?

  1669. And, as she

  1670. spoke to Joseph

  1671. day after day,

  1672. he would not

  1673. listen to her, to

  1674. lie beside her, or

  1675. to be with

  1676. her.

  1677. Joseph saw

  1678. what God was

  1679. doing in

  1680. blessing him, so

  1681. that probably

  1682. made it easy for

  1683. him to trust him

  1684. on some level,

  1685. trust God.

  1686. He obeyed God,

  1687. and God

  1688. blessed him.

  1689. And, as you

  1690. read those other

  1691. passages listed

  1692. there, you see

  1693. this over and

  1694. over again.

  1695. now, here's my

  1696. conclusion from

  1697. that indirect

  1698. evidence.

  1699. I do not

  1700. believe that

  1701. God would have

  1702. blessed Joseph in

  1703. this way if

  1704. Joseph had

  1705. been, you

  1706. know, seething

  1707. with anger

  1708. against his

  1709. brothers all

  1710. this year, all

  1711. those years.

  1712. others.

  1713. Now, I can't

  1714. prove that, but

  1715. let me ask you

  1716. to turn to

  1717. a psalm.

  1718. Psalm 37.

  1719. And, I'd

  1720. ask somebody to

  1721. read verses 4

  1722. through 9,

  1723. because...

  1724. I can read

  1725. verses.

  1726. You can.

  1727. Okay.

  1728. Are you there?

  1729. I am.

  1730. Great.

  1731. Psalm 37,

  1732. 4 through 9.

  1733. Delight yourselves

  1734. in the Lord,

  1735. and he will

  1736. give you the

  1737. desires of your

  1738. heart.

  1739. Commit your

  1740. way to the

  1741. Lord.

  1742. Trust in him,

  1743. and he will

  1744. act.

  1745. He will bring

  1746. forth your

  1747. righteousness as

  1748. the light,

  1749. and your

  1750. justice as

  1751. the noonday.

  1752. be still

  1753. before the

  1754. Lord, and

  1755. wait patiently

  1756. for him.

  1757. Threat

  1758. not yourself

  1759. over the

  1760. one who

  1761. prospers in

  1762. his way,

  1763. over the

  1764. man who

  1765. carries out

  1766. evil devices.

  1767. Refrain

  1768. from anger,

  1769. and forsake

  1770. wrath.

  1771. Threat

  1772. not yourself,

  1773. it tends

  1774. only to

  1775. evil.

  1776. For the

  1777. evildoers

  1778. shall be

  1779. cut off,

  1780. but those

  1781. who wait

  1782. for the

  1783. Lord,

  1784. shall

  1785. inherit

  1786. the

  1787. land.

  1788. Thank

  1789. you.

  1790. No

  1791. problem.

  1792. Refrain

  1793. from anger,

  1794. or in

  1795. the language

  1796. I would

  1797. use,

  1798. renounce,

  1799. what did

  1800. I say?

  1801. No,

  1802. refrain

  1803. from anger

  1804. is what

  1805. it says,

  1806. or renounce

  1807. anger.

  1808. And I

  1809. think

  1810. actually,

  1811. not

  1812. renouncing

  1813. anger is

  1814. incompatible

  1815. with really

  1816. trusting the

  1817. Lord.

  1818. It's

  1819. another

  1820. command

  1821. repeated

  1822. several

  1823. times in

  1824. the Bible

  1825. is don't

  1826. seek

  1827. revenge.

  1828. Leave it

  1829. to the

  1830. Lord.

  1831. He will

  1832. take care

  1833. of it.

  1834. So,

  1835. I

  1836. conclude,

  1837. you know,

  1838. from what

  1839. we've looked

  1840. at,

  1841. that Joseph

  1842. came to

  1843. the place

  1844. where he

  1845. trusted God,

  1846. obeyed God,

  1847. God blessed

  1848. him,

  1849. and that

  1850. he did

  1851. what this

  1852. psalm tells

  1853. us to

  1854. do,

  1855. which is

  1856. don't fret

  1857. about what

  1858. the evil

  1859. things people

  1860. have done,

  1861. refrain from

  1862. anger,

  1863. and

  1864. trust me

  1865. to take

  1866. care of

  1867. it.

  1868. There,

  1869. I am

  1870. done with

  1871. step one,

  1872. renouncing

  1873. anger.

  1874. Questions at

  1875. this point,

  1876. or comments?

  1877. All right.

  1878. When I was

  1879. living in

  1880. Stanford,

  1881. one time

  1882. I had a

  1883. cookout with

  1884. some neighbors,

  1885. and I will

  1886. call the

  1887. neighbors,

  1888. one of the

  1889. neighbors,

  1890. Rich.

  1891. Now,

  1892. as we

  1893. talked,

  1894. you know,

  1895. it came out

  1896. that another

  1897. neighbor who

  1898. lived right

  1899. next to us

  1900. too,

  1901. George,

  1902. wasn't there.

  1903. And part of

  1904. the reason is

  1905. that Rich and

  1906. George had

  1907. not talked

  1908. to each

  1909. other for

  1910. years.

  1911. And this

  1912. is the

  1913. back story.

  1914. Rich had

  1915. had a

  1916. drainage

  1917. problem in

  1918. his yard,

  1919. he had

  1920. somebody come

  1921. in and

  1922. regrade the

  1923. yard,

  1924. and his

  1925. water problem

  1926. was over,

  1927. but unfortunately

  1928. now the

  1929. water was

  1930. causing

  1931. problems for

  1932. George.

  1933. And whereas

  1934. Rich and

  1935. George had,

  1936. you know,

  1937. a good

  1938. neighborly

  1939. relationship

  1940. in the

  1941. past,

  1942. sometime

  1943. after that,

  1944. they were

  1945. both out

  1946. in their

  1947. yards,

  1948. and Rich,

  1949. you know,

  1950. said hi to

  1951. George,

  1952. and George

  1953. just turned

  1954. around,

  1955. walked away.

  1956. And Rich

  1957. concluded,

  1958. well,

  1959. sorry for

  1960. George,

  1961. but if he

  1962. doesn't want

  1963. to talk to

  1964. me,

  1965. I can live

  1966. with that.

  1967. I'm not going

  1968. to talk to

  1969. him.

  1970. now I

  1971. didn't

  1972. detect any

  1973. anger on

  1974. Rich's

  1975. part,

  1976. but there

  1977. was no

  1978. love there

  1979. either.

  1980. Rich was

  1981. content,

  1982. you know,

  1983. he hadn't

  1984. been hurt

  1985. badly,

  1986. except snubbed

  1987. a little bit,

  1988. but he was

  1989. okay with

  1990. that.

  1991. He wasn't

  1992. angry,

  1993. but wasn't

  1994. going to

  1995. take any

  1996. steps of

  1997. love.

  1998. To use

  1999. Kirsten's

  2000. example before,

  2001. you know,

  2002. somebody

  2003. treats me

  2004. badly,

  2005. I'll let

  2006. them take

  2007. the first

  2008. step.

  2009. You know,

  2010. I'm not

  2011. going to

  2012. let the

  2013. anger

  2014. simmer

  2015. inside me

  2016. and tear

  2017. me apart.

  2018. No,

  2019. I'm over

  2020. that,

  2021. but they

  2022. want to

  2023. deal with

  2024. the problem,

  2025. it's in

  2026. balls in

  2027. their court,

  2028. I'll live

  2029. without them.

  2030. Now,

  2031. that's

  2032. not great

  2033. in a

  2034. neighborhood.

  2035. But,

  2036. when you

  2037. have that

  2038. kind of

  2039. a situation

  2040. in a

  2041. family or

  2042. in a

  2043. church,

  2044. it's

  2045. deadly.

  2046. The

  2047. relationship's

  2048. been damaged,

  2049. it's not

  2050. growing.

  2051. As this

  2052. goes on,

  2053. the relationship

  2054. is dying.

  2055. is

  2056. good.

  2057. And,

  2058. as we

  2059. talked about

  2060. last week,

  2061. the goal

  2062. that God

  2063. has for us

  2064. in our

  2065. relationships

  2066. with others

  2067. is not

  2068. just that

  2069. they don't

  2070. have

  2071. hostility,

  2072. but that

  2073. the relationship

  2074. be good

  2075. and loving

  2076. and growing

  2077. and a

  2078. place where

  2079. God's

  2080. grace

  2081. is demonstrated

  2082. to the people

  2083. in the

  2084. relationship

  2085. and to the

  2086. world as a

  2087. whole.

  2088. So,

  2089. the next

  2090. step,

  2091. I suggest,

  2092. or a

  2093. next step

  2094. in restoring

  2095. a damaged

  2096. relationship

  2097. is to

  2098. respond

  2099. in love.

  2100. passage.

  2101. So,

  2102. once again,

  2103. I'm going

  2104. to need

  2105. people to

  2106. read

  2107. some

  2108. passages.

  2109. And,

  2110. would

  2111. somebody

  2112. be willing

  2113. to turn

  2114. to

  2115. Matthew

    Matthew 5:43

  2116. 5,

  2117. verse

  2118. 43?

  2119. And,

  2120. I'll ask

  2121. you a little

  2122. bit later

  2123. to read

  2124. that.

  2125. But,

  2126. could somebody

  2127. be ready

  2128. to do

  2129. that for

  2130. me?

  2131. Raise

  2132. your hand

  2133. if you'll

  2134. thank you.

  2135. And,

  2136. the second

  2137. passage,

  2138. 1 John

  2139. 3.16.

  2140. Not John

  2141. 3.16,

  2142. but 1 John

  2143. 3.16.

  2144. Would somebody

  2145. be willing

  2146. to read

  2147. that for us

  2148. in a little

  2149. bit?

  2150. Thank you,

  2151. Sam.

  2152. Sam E.

  2153. Sam E.

  2154. Thank you.

  2155. And,

  2156. the third

  2157. passage is

  2158. Luke

  2159. 6.32.

  2160. 2.

  2161. Would

  2162. somebody

  2163. be ready

  2164. and thank

  2165. you,

  2166. John?

  2167. Okay.

  2168. So,

  2169. as some

  2170. of you

  2171. are juggling

  2172. your Bibles

  2173. there,

  2174. I want

  2175. to draw

  2176. your attention

  2177. to this

  2178. section

  2179. of the

  2180. handout.

  2181. Responding

  2182. in love.

  2183. And,

  2184. I'd like

  2185. you to

  2186. look at

  2187. those three

  2188. aspects.

  2189. I affirm

  2190. that you

  2191. are loved

  2192. by God

  2193. and worthy

  2194. of my

  2195. love,

  2196. too.

  2197. I choose

  2198. to act

  2199. lovingly

  2200. towards you

  2201. and I

  2202. feel affection,

  2203. concern,

  2204. appreciation

  2205. for you.

  2206. Now,

  2207. normally,

  2208. in relationships

  2209. with other

  2210. people,

  2211. what order

  2212. do you

  2213. think

  2214. those three

  2215. aspects

  2216. of love

  2217. usually

  2218. come in?

  2219. For

  2220. example,

  2221. imagine

  2222. a one-year-old

  2223. child.

  2224. They're

  2225. growing

  2226. to love.

  2227. their

  2228. mother.

  2229. Do you

  2230. think the

  2231. first step

  2232. in their

  2233. growing to

  2234. love them

  2235. is,

  2236. mom,

  2237. I affirm

  2238. that you

  2239. are loved

  2240. by God

  2241. and I

  2242. want what

  2243. is best

  2244. for you.

  2245. I think

  2246. generally,

  2247. in our

  2248. experience,

  2249. the reverse

  2250. order is

  2251. what happens.

  2252. Somebody

  2253. acts lovingly

  2254. towards us.

  2255. We feel

  2256. affection for

  2257. them and

  2258. if that

  2259. happens often

  2260. enough,

  2261. it grows

  2262. into love

  2263. for them.

  2264. And then,

  2265. hopefully,

  2266. we not only

  2267. feel love

  2268. for them,

  2269. but we

  2270. start acting

  2271. lovingly

  2272. towards them

  2273. as well.

  2274. And then,

  2275. once we get

  2276. theologically

  2277. sophisticated,

  2278. we may

  2279. come to

  2280. say,

  2281. yes,

  2282. love

  2283. and just

  2284. as God

  2285. loves me,

  2286. he loves

  2287. them.

  2288. And I

  2289. should love

  2290. the people

  2291. I already

  2292. love and

  2293. as I have

  2294. opportunity,

  2295. love others.

  2296. But,

  2297. when you've

  2298. been in a

  2299. relationship

  2300. and it's

  2301. been damaged,

  2302. this,

  2303. I think,

  2304. is the

  2305. typical order

  2306. by which we

  2307. start to

  2308. respond in

  2309. love once

  2310. again.

  2311. Once we've

  2312. at least

  2313. started the

  2314. process of

  2315. renouncing

  2316. anger,

  2317. God may

  2318. bring to

  2319. mind,

  2320. you know,

  2321. I love

  2322. you and

  2323. I love

  2324. them too.

  2325. And you

  2326. should act

  2327. lovingly

  2328. towards them.

  2329. I don't

  2330. know if

  2331. Kirsten's

  2332. still here,

  2333. but I'm

  2334. so glad she

  2335. said that,

  2336. you know.

  2337. at the

  2338. beginning.

  2339. And so,

  2340. we might

  2341. hear God

  2342. saying,

  2343. and I

  2344. want you

  2345. to take

  2346. this step.

  2347. But,

  2348. that's the

  2349. second thing,

  2350. acting in

  2351. love.

  2352. First thing

  2353. is,

  2354. you know,

  2355. God speaking

  2356. to us and

  2357. saying,

  2358. I love

  2359. them,

  2360. I want

  2361. the best

  2362. for them.

  2363. Will you

  2364. join me

  2365. in that?

  2366. Would

  2367. somebody

  2368. please read

  2369. the Matthew

  2370. passage?

  2371. Matthew

  2372. 5,

  2373. 43,

  2374. through

  2375. 48.

  2376. You have

  2377. heard that

  2378. it was

  2379. said,

  2380. you shall

  2381. love your

  2382. neighbor and

  2383. hate your

  2384. enemy.

  2385. But I

  2386. say to you,

  2387. love your

  2388. enemies and

  2389. pray for those

  2390. who persecute

  2391. you,

  2392. so that you

  2393. may be sons

  2394. of your

  2395. father who

  2396. is in

  2397. heaven.

  2398. For he

  2399. makes his

  2400. son rise

  2401. on the evil

  2402. and on the

  2403. good,

  2404. and sends

  2405. rain on the

  2406. just and on

  2407. the unjust.

  2408. For if you

  2409. love those who

  2410. love you,

  2411. what reward

  2412. do you have?

  2413. Do not even

  2414. the tax collectors

  2415. do the same?

  2416. And if you

  2417. greet only your

  2418. brothers,

  2419. what more are

  2420. you doing than

  2421. others?

  2422. Do not even

  2423. the Gentiles do

  2424. the same?

  2425. You therefore

  2426. must be perfect

  2427. as your heavenly

  2428. father is

  2429. perfect.

  2430. Thank you.

  2431. So,

  2432. as children

  2433. of God,

  2434. God calls us

  2435. to love

  2436. others,

  2437. even those

  2438. who treat us

  2439. badly,

  2440. just as

  2441. God so

  2442. loved the

  2443. world that he

  2444. sent Jesus

  2445. to die

  2446. for the

  2447. world while

  2448. we were

  2449. still his

  2450. enemies.

  2451. And,

  2452. let's say

  2453. you get to

  2454. the point,

  2455. okay,

  2456. yes,

  2457. Lord,

  2458. I want what's

  2459. best for them.

  2460. I want to

  2461. have a good

  2462. relationship with

  2463. them again,

  2464. but I don't

  2465. feel like

  2466. doing it,

  2467. doing anything.

  2468. I don't feel

  2469. maybe he's,

  2470. God's led you

  2471. to do something,

  2472. take another

  2473. step.

  2474. I don't feel

  2475. like doing

  2476. that.

  2477. Thank you,

  2478. those who

  2479. are going

  2480. to read

  2481. the other

  2482. passages.

  2483. I'll leave

  2484. you if

  2485. you generally

  2486. want to

  2487. read those

  2488. later.

  2489. But,

  2490. I want to

  2491. finish with

  2492. this

  2493. illustration.

  2494. Some of

  2495. you have

  2496. heard the

  2497. name

  2498. Corrie

  2499. Ten Boom.

  2500. She was

  2501. a Christian

  2502. woman who

  2503. helped a

  2504. number of

  2505. Jews escape

  2506. from the

  2507. Nazis during

  2508. World War

  2509. II.

  2510. But,

  2511. eventually,

  2512. they discovered

  2513. her and

  2514. her family

  2515. doing this

  2516. and she,

  2517. her father,

  2518. and her

  2519. sister were

  2520. taken off to

  2521. a concentration

  2522. camp themselves.

  2523. Her father and

  2524. sister died there,

  2525. but she

  2526. survived.

  2527. And,

  2528. there's a book

  2529. written about her

  2530. experience by her,

  2531. The Hiding

  2532. Place,

  2533. and there was a

  2534. movie some

  2535. years ago made

  2536. about,

  2537. based on the

  2538. book.

  2539. Really good

  2540. movie.

  2541. story.

  2542. But,

  2543. after she

  2544. wrote the

  2545. book,

  2546. she became

  2547. a speaker

  2548. and she

  2549. went around

  2550. the churches

  2551. and other

  2552. places telling

  2553. about her

  2554. experience and

  2555. preaching the

  2556. gospel.

  2557. On one

  2558. occasion,

  2559. she came

  2560. face to

  2561. face with

  2562. one of the

  2563. cruelest guards

  2564. in the

  2565. concentration

  2566. camp who

  2567. had abused

  2568. her and

  2569. her sister

  2570. terribly.

  2571. And,

  2572. he came

  2573. up to

  2574. her and

  2575. held out

  2576. his hand

  2577. and said,

  2578. will you

  2579. forgive me?

  2580. And,

  2581. this is what

  2582. she wrote.

  2583. I stood

  2584. there with

  2585. coldness

  2586. clutching at

  2587. my heart,

  2588. but I knew

  2589. that the

  2590. will can

  2591. function

  2592. regardless of

  2593. the temperature

  2594. of the

  2595. heart.

  2596. I prayed,

  2597. Jesus,

  2598. help me.

  2599. Woodenly,

  2600. mechanically,

  2601. I thrust

  2602. my hand

  2603. into the

  2604. one stretched

  2605. out to

  2606. me and

  2607. I experienced

  2608. an incredible

  2609. thing.

  2610. The current

  2611. started in

  2612. my shoulder,

  2613. ran down

  2614. my arm,

  2615. and sprang

  2616. into our

  2617. clutched

  2618. hands.

  2619. Then,

  2620. this warm

  2621. reconciliation

  2622. seemed to

  2623. flood my

  2624. whole being,

  2625. bringing tears

  2626. to my

  2627. eyes.

  2628. I forgive

  2629. you,

  2630. brother,

  2631. I cried

  2632. with my

  2633. whole heart.

  2634. For a

  2635. long moment,

  2636. we grasped

  2637. each other's

  2638. hands,

  2639. the former

  2640. guard,

  2641. the former

  2642. prisoner.

  2643. I have

  2644. never known

  2645. the love

  2646. of God

  2647. so intensely

  2648. as I did

  2649. at that

  2650. moment.

  2651. Point being,

  2652. in a

  2653. situation like

  2654. a damaged

  2655. relationship,

  2656. it is

  2657. usually

  2658. that

  2659. by God's

  2660. grace we

  2661. act lovingly

  2662. first,

  2663. and then

  2664. the feelings

  2665. follow.

  2666. So don't

  2667. wait

  2668. to feel

  2669. loving in a

  2670. situation like

  2671. that.

  2672. heavenly

  2673. father,

  2674. help us

  2675. to apply

  2676. your

  2677. word,

  2678. guided by

  2679. your

  2680. spirit,

  2681. that we

  2682. may live

  2683. this week

  2684. as your

  2685. sons and

  2686. daughters,

  2687. in love

  2688. and in

  2689. peace.

  2690. Amen.

  2691. Amen.

  2692. We are

  2693. dismissed.
