  1. Our sermon text today is Genesis chapter 1 verses 26 through 31.

    Genesis 1:26–31

  2. That's page number 1 in the Pew Bible.

  3. If you're here and you're new to Christianity or if you're exploring spiritual things, this is a great time to be here at Trinity.

  4. This fall we're walking through the opening pages of the Bible to learn who God is, who we are, and what story we find ourselves in.

  5. And there's so much in these early chapters of Genesis that we're going to take a couple of weeks for each one just to make sure we don't miss the richness of what is here for us in God's word.

  6. So we're back in Genesis 1 this morning, now focusing on verses 26 through 31.

  7. So let me pray for us and then I'll read.

  8. Let's pray.

  9. Lord Jesus, indeed there's no one like you.

  10. None greater in majesty, none greater in mercy.

  11. We pray that by your spirit this morning we would be able to see more of you and more of who we are and who you've created us to be in your image.

  12. We ask this in your name, Lord. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. Genesis 1 verse 26.

    Genesis 1:26

  15. Then God said,

  16. Let us make man in our image after our likeness.

  17. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  18. So God created man in his own image.

  19. In the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.

  20. And God blessed them.

  21. And said to them,

  22. And God said,

  23. And God said,

  24. And subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

  25. And God said,

  26. And behold,

  27. And behold,

  28. And behold,

  29. I've given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth and every tree with seed in its fruit.

  30. You shall have them for food.

  31. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth,

  32. everything that has the breath of life,

  33. I have given every green plant for food.

  34. And it was so.

  35. And God saw everything that he had made.

  36. And behold,

  37. it was very good.

  38. And there was evening and there was morning,

  39. the sixth day.

  40. Flannery O'Connor,

  41. the great southern fiction writer,

  42. once said,

  43. In the long run,

  44. a people is known,

  45. not by its statements or its statistics,

  46. but by the stories it tells.

  47. What story are you telling about you?

  48. About us,

  49. humans.

  50. Or as the ancient Hebrew poet wrote in Psalm 8,

  51. What is man?

  52. Humanity.

  53. That you are mindful of him.

  54. Last week we saw that the beginning of the biblical story here in Genesis 1 starts with,

  55. God.

  56. And a God who's not some distant,

  57. cold deity,

  58. but a God who brings order from chaos,

  59. and a God who fills the lifeless with life,

  60. and a God who invites the weary in to rest.

  61. But what about us humans?

  62. Who are we?

  63. Now I probably don't have to convince you

  64. that this is an important question.

  65. Most of us have asked at one point or another,

  66. Who am I?

  67. What am I here for?

  68. For some of us,

  69. it's a fleeting thought that we just sort of brush aside in our busyness.

  70. For others,

  71. it becomes a gnawing concern.

  72. But how we answer that question

  73. is sort of like the rudder of a ship

  74. turning that seemingly small thing,

  75. answering that seemingly small question,

  76. vastly changes the direction,

  77. the trajectory,

  78. the outcome of a life.

  79. So who are you?

  80. What story are you telling?

  81. There are lots of stories

  82. on offer today.

  83. On the one hand,

  84. are you the result of nothing more than time,

  85. and matter,

  86. and energy,

  87. and chance?

  88. In other words,

  89. are you basically the lucky accident

  90. of a cold cosmos,

  91. a collection of atoms that just sort of happened?

  92. And one day,

  93. will dissolve just as meaninglessly?

  94. Or on the other end of the spectrum,

  95. are you a divine spark

  96. trapped in the material world?

  97. Trying to get out,

  98. maybe caught in a cycle of birth and rebirth?

  99. Maybe some kind of spirituality

  100. could get you unstuck

  101. so that the real you

  102. could get out of all this material,

  103. dark stuff we call matter?

  104. What story are you telling?

  105. And you know,

  106. the funny thing is,

  107. both of those two ideas

  108. that I just mentioned,

  109. both of them are ancient

  110. and modern at the same time.

  111. On the one hand,

  112. this materialism,

  113. that we're just sort of matter and chance,

  114. and on the other hand,

  115. what we might call Gnosticism,

  116. that we're sort of a spirit

  117. stuck in this dark world,

  118. they've both been around

  119. for thousands of years,

  120. and both in their own way

  121. are still around today.

  122. Don't think that one is new

  123. and one is old.

  124. But the reality is,

  125. there's a better story to tell.

  126. And one that actually makes better sense

  127. of what we see and feel and know.

  128. And it's found right here in Genesis 1.

  129. The true story of what it means to be human.

  130. So this morning,

  131. I want to point to three things

  132. that we see here

  133. about who we are as human beings.

  134. who you are.

  135. So, first,

  136. who are you?

  137. You are the result

  138. of the intention of God.

  139. Look at verse 27.

  140. Verse 27 reads,

  141. Then God said,

  142. Let us make man.

  143. Now, the word man here

  144. is a general term.

  145. It carries the sense of all humanity.

  146. So this passage is talking about

  147. all humankind.

  148. But here in verse 27,

  149. something sort of unique happens.

  150. Now, up to this point in the chapter,

  151. God has just spoken

  152. and it was, right?

  153. The sky,

  154. the seas,

  155. the earth,

  156. the stars,

  157. the animals,

  158. let there be,

  159. God said,

  160. and there was.

  161. But here,

  162. for the first time

  163. in Genesis 1,

  164. we hear God

  165. deliberating,

  166. as it were.

  167. We're given a brief glimpse

  168. into God's own

  169. inner

  170. eternal intention.

  171. There's this pause

  172. in the narrative

  173. and we hear God say,

  174. let us make humanity.

  175. As if to drive home the point

  176. that what God is about to do here

  177. is done consciously

  178. with deep design.

  179. There is a rich,

  180. personal purpose

  181. of God unfolding here.

  182. You are the deliberate

  183. result

  184. of the intention

  185. of God.

  186. But who is this us

  187. that God speaks of?

  188. Let us,

  189. it says.

  190. Who is us?

  191. Now,

  192. some have thought

  193. that God is speaking here

  194. to perhaps

  195. the heavenly court

  196. of angelic beings.

  197. God is,

  198. after all,

  199. the creator

  200. of all things seen

  201. and unseen.

  202. Perhaps God here,

  203. presumably having already

  204. created those heavenly beings,

  205. at some point

  206. is now addressing them.

  207. Let us.

  208. And yet,

  209. the problem

  210. with that view is,

  211. as these verses

  212. plainly show,

  213. God doesn't create humanity

  214. in the image of angels,

  215. nor are the angels

  216. created in the image of God.

  217. No,

  218. God creates humanity

  219. in the image of God.

  220. The us

  221. and the our

  222. of verse 26

  223. refer to God alone.

  224. So who is this God?

  225. I like how Old Testament scholar

  226. Derek Kidner explained it.

  227. He said,

  228. what we're dealing with here

  229. in verse 26

  230. with this us

  231. and our

  232. is a plural

  233. of fullness.

  234. In fact,

  235. the Hebrew word for God

  236. is also grammatically plural

  237. as well

  238. to express the fact

  239. that God is,

  240. well,

  241. God.

  242. There's a holy fullness

  243. in God.

  244. and you see this fullness

  245. will be unfolded

  246. and revealed

  247. throughout the whole

  248. of scripture

  249. as God progressively

  250. reveals more and more

  251. of that fullness

  252. of who he is to us.

  253. Sort of like an acorn

  254. that has all of the DNA

  255. of a fully grown tree

  256. so that DNA

  257. packed into this us

  258. and our

  259. of Genesis 1 26

  260. will grow

  261. throughout scripture.

  262. Or as a mountain range

  263. sort of seen from afar

  264. grows in detail

  265. the closer and closer

  266. you get.

  267. So God's fullness

  268. will become clearer

  269. and clearer

  270. until

  271. in the dawning

  272. of the New Testament

  273. we get to see

  274. the full picture.

  275. And what we see

  276. from the perspective

  277. of the New Testament

  278. in the whole Bible

  279. is that God's fullness

  280. is what we've come

  281. to call the Trinity.

  282. That the one God

  283. eternally exists

  284. in three persons,

  285. Father,

  286. Son,

  287. and Holy Spirit.

  288. Now,

  289. did the human author

  290. of Genesis 1

  291. intend in his human mind

  292. to communicate

  293. the fully fledged

  294. doctrine of the Trinity here?

  295. Maybe not.

  296. But standing where we stand

  297. from the place

  298. of the New Testament,

  299. the tree fully grown,

  300. the mountain up close

  301. and personal,

  302. it's not hard

  303. to look back at Genesis

  304. and see what the Holy Spirit

  305. has inspired.

  306. because what do we see

  307. in Genesis 1?

  308. There is God

  309. and God's Spirit

  310. and God's Word

  311. all at work

  312. in creation.

  313. And this God says

  314. in his fullness,

  315. let us make humanity

  316. in our image.

  317. Friends, you see,

  318. you are the result

  319. of the deliberate intention

  320. of the very triune God

  321. we worship and praise.

  322. And that means

  323. that you are not

  324. merely the accident

  325. of time

  326. and matter

  327. and chance.

  328. The triune God

  329. has created you

  330. with deep intention.

  331. You are here

  332. for a reason.

  333. You have a place

  334. in the divine story.

  335. God,

  336. the author

  337. and director

  338. of all things,

  339. has not just put out

  340. a casting call,

  341. but God's actually

  342. chosen you

  343. for the part

  344. that you are to play.

  345. humanity.

  346. But what is that part?

  347. This brings us

  348. to the second point

  349. we see here

  350. in Genesis 1.

  351. You are not just

  352. a result

  353. of the divine intention.

  354. Second,

  355. you are a bearer

  356. of God's image.

  357. If verse 26

  358. that we just

  359. were talking about

  360. is God's intention

  361. for humanity,

  362. then in verse 27

  363. we see God's creation

  364. of humanity.

  365. Look at that verse again,

  366. verse 27.

  367. So God created man,

  368. created humanity

  369. in his own image.

  370. In the image of God

  371. he created him,

  372. male and female

  373. he created them.

  374. Now,

  375. you have to imagine

  376. how these words

  377. would have first sounded

  378. to the people of Israel.

  379. Living in the wilderness,

  380. having spent

  381. generations in slavery,

  382. still homeless,

  383. outside the promised land,

  384. and here comes

  385. this language

  386. language

  387. of God's image

  388. to them.

  389. Well, you see,

  390. in the ancient world,

  391. that's how kings

  392. would have described

  393. themselves.

  394. The king

  395. bore the image

  396. of God.

  397. He was the offspring

  398. of the gods,

  399. the son of the gods,

  400. ruling on earth

  401. in the stead

  402. of the gods.

  403. He alone

  404. possessed

  405. that kind

  406. of dignity.

  407. You know,

  408. today it's not

  409. that much different.

  410. It's still

  411. the rich

  412. and the famous

  413. and the powerful

  414. that we think

  415. have the real

  416. dignity

  417. and honor

  418. and glory

  419. and worth.

  420. But that

  421. is not

  422. true.

  423. Friends,

  424. we have forgotten

  425. who we are.

  426. The world says

  427. only the kings

  428. are made in God's image,

  429. but Genesis 1

  430. says that

  431. every man

  432. and every woman

  433. is the very image

  434. of God,

  435. possessing

  436. unsurpassed

  437. dignity

  438. and worth

  439. and value.

  440. And just to drive

  441. it home,

  442. the end of verse 27

  443. says,

  444. male and female.

  445. He created them

  446. as if to say

  447. this dignity

  448. of bearing God's image

  449. is not limited

  450. to only one part

  451. of humanity.

  452. Male and female

  453. equally

  454. and fully

  455. bear the image

  456. of God.

  457. This was

  458. unheard of

  459. in the ancient world.

  460. could there be

  461. anything

  462. more revolutionary

  463. and liberating

  464. than that thought

  465. all of us

  466. created

  467. in God's image?

  468. All of us

  469. possessing

  470. a dignity

  471. beyond imagination

  472. and beyond

  473. calculation.

  474. Whether male

  475. or female,

  476. young or old,

  477. rich or poor,

  478. all races,

  479. all nationalities,

  480. all abilities,

  481. all people

  482. without exclusion,

  483. all of us

  484. bear God's image.

  485. C.S. Lewis

  486. ends his great sermon

  487. The Weight of Glory

  488. by saying,

  489. you've never met

  490. a mere mortal.

  491. Humans are creatures,

  492. yes.

  493. We are not God,

  494. but we are all

  495. creatures made

  496. in the image of God.

  497. And this has deep

  498. ethical implications.

  499. This makes all

  500. the difference

  501. in how we live

  502. and act

  503. and treat one another.

  504. Because all humans

  505. are created

  506. in God's image,

  507. the church

  508. says no

  509. to racism,

  510. to sexism,

  511. to ageism,

  512. to really any way

  513. of thinking

  514. that takes one

  515. category of people

  516. and says they're

  517. not worthy

  518. of value

  519. and respect

  520. and worth.

  521. We reject that

  522. outright.

  523. And because all

  524. humans are created

  525. in God's image,

  526. we celebrate

  527. the dignity

  528. and intrinsic

  529. worth of all people,

  530. even those the world

  531. would deem poor

  532. or useless

  533. or inconvenient.

  534. Isn't it funny

  535. that today

  536. we live in a time

  537. when that idea

  538. is loved

  539. and celebrated.

  540. We want to say

  541. yes to that.

  542. And here in the Bible

  543. is the very ground

  544. for being able

  545. to say and do that.

  546. how must that

  547. have struck

  548. those Israelites,

  549. poor,

  550. homeless,

  551. knowing nothing

  552. in their past

  553. but slavery?

  554. How does it strike you?

  555. Friend,

  556. regardless of how

  557. your job

  558. or your looks

  559. or your ability

  560. or your wealth

  561. stacks up

  562. to those around you,

  563. you possess

  564. something

  565. that even

  566. the angels

  567. do not possess.

  568. You bear

  569. the very image

  570. of God.

  571. So lift

  572. your head

  573. high.

  574. You have

  575. a dignity

  576. that nothing

  577. in this world

  578. can give

  579. and nothing

  580. can take away.

  581. As evidence

  582. of that dignity,

  583. look again

  584. at verse 27.

  585. Do you notice

  586. something odd

  587. about that verse

  588. in the rest

  589. of chapter 1?

  590. It's written

  591. in poetry.

  592. Now it doesn't

  593. rhyme.

  594. Hebrew poetry

  595. didn't rhyme

  596. but it was about

  597. rhythm

  598. and repetition.

  599. So our English

  600. translations rightly

  601. set it off

  602. in verse.

  603. The first poem

  604. of the whole Bible,

  605. what does it

  606. celebrate?

  607. The creation

  608. of humanity

  609. in God's image.

  610. church.

  611. Something so

  612. beautiful

  613. is happening

  614. here

  615. that it can

  616. only be expressed

  617. in art,

  618. in verse,

  619. in poetry.

  620. God is singing

  621. over his people.

  622. And near the end

  623. of the Old Testament

  624. we find the same

  625. thing.

  626. The little prophetic

  627. book of Zephaniah

    Zephaniah 3:17

  628. chapter 3

  629. verse 17

  630. says,

  631. God will rejoice

  632. over you

  633. with gladness.

  634. He will quiet

  635. you by his love.

  636. He will exalt

  637. over you

  638. with loud singing.

  639. You are a bearer

  640. of God's own image.

  641. You have a dignity

  642. that nothing

  643. can take away.

  644. Now there's been

  645. a lot of theological

  646. discussion over

  647. what exactly

  648. this image of God

  649. refers to.

  650. Is it referring

  651. to the way

  652. in which we

  653. resemble God

  654. or does it refer

  655. to the way

  656. in which we

  657. as humans

  658. represent God?

  659. In other words,

  660. as bearers

  661. of God's image,

  662. do we resemble

  663. God in some way

  664. that the rest

  665. of creation

  666. does not?

  667. Maybe our capacity

  668. for reason

  669. or morality

  670. or maybe our capacity

  671. for beauty

  672. and art

  673. or for language

  674. or for love

  675. and relationships?

  676. And historically,

  677. the church

  678. has actually pointed

  679. to all these ways

  680. in which we

  681. resemble God

  682. because you see

  683. the family traits

  684. of the triune God

  685. are all over us

  686. humans.

  687. God is,

  688. after all,

  689. perfect in knowledge

  690. and goodness

  691. and beauty

  692. and love

  693. and we,

  694. his image bearers,

  695. reflect this

  696. in a creaturely way.

  697. Yes,

  698. we're not God

  699. but we reflect this

  700. in a unique way

  701. amidst all creation.

  702. We bear God's image

  703. and likeness.

  704. But the other way

  705. of seeing the image

  706. of God

  707. is that it refers

  708. to the way

  709. in which we

  710. not just resemble God

  711. but the way

  712. we represent God.

  713. That is,

  714. the way

  715. in which we

  716. as humans

  717. are God's

  718. representatives

  719. amidst creation.

  720. You see,

  721. when an ancient king

  722. would conquer a city,

  723. often he erected

  724. an image of himself

  725. in the middle of town.

  726. Put a statue there

  727. that looked just like him

  728. as if to say,

  729. this is now part

  730. of my kingdom.

  731. The image represented

  732. the rule of the king.

  733. But when God

  734. created the world

  735. and wanted to

  736. inaugurate his kingdom

  737. in the midst of creation,

  738. he didn't make a statue

  739. or a graven image.

  740. He made humans.

  741. Humanity would represent

  742. God's loving rule.

  743. Male and female

  744. would take up the office,

  745. the role

  746. of image bearers.

  747. That means we are

  748. the envoys,

  749. the stewards,

  750. the vice regents

  751. of the king

  752. ruling on his behalf.

  753. And that brings us

  754. to our third point.

  755. Who are you?

  756. You are the result

  757. of God's intention.

  758. You are the bearer

  759. of God's image.

  760. But third,

  761. you are the recipient

  762. of God's commission.

  763. In verse 28,

  764. God blesses humanity

  765. and then God

  766. gives them this command.

  767. Be fruitful

  768. and multiply

  769. and fill the earth

  770. and subdue it

  771. and have dominion

  772. over the fish of the sea

  773. and over the birds

  774. of the heavens

  775. and over everything

  776. that moves on the earth.

  777. You see,

  778. God created us

  779. not just

  780. with immeasurable dignity,

  781. that is in his image,

  782. but also with a thrilling

  783. responsibility.

  784. Subdue

  785. and have dominion,

  786. God says.

  787. Go forth

  788. into this creation

  789. and create

  790. and steward

  791. and enjoy

  792. and make something

  793. of it

  794. for my sake.

  795. Use all the dignity

  796. and the gifts

  797. I've given you

  798. and make creation

  799. sing my praise.

  800. I have sung

  801. over you.

  802. Now you unleash

  803. this creation

  804. that I've made

  805. and make it sing

  806. for me.

  807. I'm extending

  808. my kingdom

  809. through you.

  810. Subdue

  811. and have dominion.

  812. Those words

  813. are rich,

  814. are they not?

  815. With authority.

  816. In fact,

  817. when you study

  818. the use of those words

  819. throughout the rest

  820. of the Bible,

  821. they are words

  822. used of kings.

  823. It is a royal office

  824. God has placed us in.

  825. But how are we

  826. to use this authority?

  827. Well,

  828. I think it's pretty clear

  829. from Genesis 1

  830. as his image bearers,

  831. we are meant to carry out

  832. this commission

  833. in a way

  834. that God would.

  835. And as we look

  836. at Genesis 1,

  837. how does God

  838. exercise his authority

  839. over creation?

  840. Well,

  841. it's in a way

  842. that brings life

  843. and flourishing

  844. and even joy.

  845. The commission here

  846. in Genesis 1.28

  847. is not a license

  848. to use

  849. and abuse creation

  850. for our own

  851. selfish purposes.

  852. No,

  853. it's a calling

  854. to steward

  855. the created order

  856. on behalf

  857. of the one true king,

  858. the living God.

  859. We have to care

  860. for creation

  861. because it's not

  862. our own,

  863. it's his.

  864. if I were going

  865. away on a trip

  866. for a month or two

  867. and I asked you

  868. to house sit for me,

  869. what would I do?

  870. Well,

  871. I would hand you

  872. the keys to the home

  873. and probably give you

  874. some instructions

  875. on how to care for things

  876. and feed the fish

  877. and then I would give you

  878. functional authority

  879. over the house.

  880. You would have

  881. the responsibility

  882. and the privilege

  883. of living there

  884. and making the decisions.

  885. But how would you

  886. approach this job?

  887. would your next step

  888. be to call

  889. the local construction guy

  890. and say,

  891. hey,

  892. there's a lot

  893. of free materials

  894. over here,

  895. you can come scrap them,

  896. tear them down

  897. and just give me the money,

  898. just forward it

  899. right into my account.

  900. No,

  901. ultimately the house

  902. isn't your own,

  903. you'd probably take

  904. extra good care of it

  905. knowing that I was

  906. going to return.

  907. And that is meant

  908. to be our approach

  909. to this world

  910. that God's made

  911. and placed us in,

  912. to care for it,

  913. to steward it

  914. and yes,

  915. to have authority

  916. and responsibility

  917. for it,

  918. knowing that it belongs

  919. to God

  920. to bring out

  921. its best

  922. for our king.

  923. So what do you make

  924. of God's commission here?

  925. Oftentimes our lives

  926. feel like a series

  927. of disconnected

  928. and ultimately

  929. insignificant events,

  930. don't they?

  931. Many of us,

  932. if we're honest

  933. or bored

  934. or frustrated

  935. with our everyday lives

  936. and we long

  937. for a deeper meaning

  938. to what we do.

  939. Alan DeBotten,

  940. the British essayist,

  941. published a book

  942. a few years ago

  943. called

  944. The Pleasures

  945. and Sorrows of Work.

  946. It's actually

  947. a very beautifully

  948. written book

  949. and at the end

  950. of that book

  951. he steps back

  952. and asks the question,

  953. what is our work

  954. really for?

  955. And DeBotten

  956. is actually

  957. a very thoughtful

  958. unbeliever

  959. and he's quite honest

  960. at that point.

  961. He says,

  962. you know that

  963. at the end of the day

  964. the importance

  965. of work

  966. isn't

  967. its enduring value,

  968. he says.

  969. Because for him

  970. time will eventually

  971. wipe everything away.

  972. No, he says,

  973. perhaps in the end

  974. the enduring value

  975. of work

  976. is in its capacity

  977. to distract us

  978. from the inevitable.

  979. Let death find us,

  980. he says,

  981. as we are building up

  982. our matchstick

  983. protests

  984. against its waves.

  985. Is that all

  986. we can say

  987. about our future,

  988. our labors

  989. as humans?

  990. Building up

  991. matchstick

  992. protests

  993. against the waves

  994. of oblivion.

  995. But Genesis

  996. gives us

  997. a much

  998. different story

  999. and one

  1000. that makes

  1001. much more sense

  1002. of our desire

  1003. for significance.

  1004. Our work

  1005. is part

  1006. of God's

  1007. commission

  1008. to cultivate

  1009. creation

  1010. for his

  1011. eternal glory.

  1012. Each of us,

  1013. whether we

  1014. want to think

  1015. it or not,

  1016. is a culture

  1017. shaper

  1018. for the king

  1019. in our homes,

  1020. in our offices,

  1021. in our neighborhoods

  1022. here at church.

  1023. And the work

  1024. that matters

  1025. to God

  1026. isn't just

  1027. what we might

  1028. call spiritual

  1029. work or church

  1030. work.

  1031. No.

  1032. Engineers,

  1033. craftsmen,

  1034. teachers,

  1035. artists,

  1036. manufacturers,

  1037. managers,

  1038. builders,

  1039. cleaners,

  1040. all of this

  1041. is the unfolding

  1042. of God's

  1043. commission to care

  1044. and cultivate

  1045. his world.

  1046. So friend,

  1047. take up your work

  1048. with purpose

  1049. for if it's done

  1050. for God,

  1051. it's no mere

  1052. matchstick

  1053. on the shore.

  1054. it's a monument

  1055. to the living

  1056. eternal God,

  1057. a shaping

  1058. and stewarding

  1059. of his

  1060. world.

  1061. But here we have

  1062. to pause,

  1063. don't we,

  1064. and take stock.

  1065. If we're honest,

  1066. this commission,

  1067. this responsibility

  1068. we have

  1069. as humans

  1070. made in God's image,

  1071. we haven't always

  1072. carried it out

  1073. the way we should,

  1074. have we?

  1075. Genesis 1

  1076. is the beginning

  1077. of the story

  1078. and how have we

  1079. lived out

  1080. this dignity

  1081. and responsibility

  1082. we've been given?

  1083. Too often,

  1084. we've not treated

  1085. one another

  1086. as bearers

  1087. of God's image

  1088. and too often,

  1089. we've labored

  1090. for our own sake

1091. and not for God's sake.

  1092. We've used creation,

  1093. not cared for it.

  1094. God created us

  1095. to rule under him

  1096. but instead,

  1097. we've rebelled

  1098. and we've lived

  1099. our own way

  1100. with no reference

  1101. to God

  1102. in God's world

  1103. and the result

  1104. isn't joy

  1105. and flourishing,

  1106. it's decay

  1107. and death

  1108. and loneliness.

  1109. Dignity lost,

  1110. authority squandered.

  1111. And so,

  1112. is that the end

  1113. of the story?

  1114. Humanity begins

  1115. with great expectations

  1116. but we end

  1117. in ruin

  1118. and decay.

  1119. What starts

  1120. with a bang

  1121. ends with a whimper

  1122. as T.S. Eliot

  1123. once wrote.

  1124. Is there any hope

  1125. for us?

  1126. Can we begin again

  1127. maybe,

1128. go back to the start?

  1129. But as we look

  1130. over human history,

  1131. has there been

  1132. anyone

  1133. able to live

  1134. like this?

  1135. The way Genesis 1

  1136. says we were created

  1137. to live.

  1138. Amidst all the wreckage

  1139. and ruin,

1140. maybe if there was one

  1141. there could be hope

  1142. for us

1143. but where do we find

  1144. such a one?

  1145. But friends,

  1146. the good news

  1147. of the Bible

  1148. is that there is.

  1149. There is one

  1150. who came

  1151. and bore the image

  1152. of God perfectly.

  1153. Who used all

  1154. his authority

  1155. to bring life

  1156. and to heal creation

  1157. and to fulfill

  1158. the commission

  1159. of God.

  1160. At long last,

  1161. a true human.

  1162. Who is this one?

  1163. And,

  1164. could it be

  1165. that if we were

  1166. somehow

  1167. connected to him

  1168. or united to him

  1169. or somehow

  1170. invited into his presence

  1171. maybe we too

  1172. could be healed

  1173. and repaired

  1174. and maybe even

  1175. forgiven

  1176. and maybe put right.

  1177. Maybe somehow

  1178. this image of God

1179. in us could be repaired.

1180. But what would that take?

  1181. What would this

  1182. truly human one

  1183. have to do

  1184. to rescue us

  1185. and lift us up

  1186. with him?

  1187. That is the story

  1188. of the New Testament.

  1189. God the Son,

  1190. the second person

  1191. of the Trinity,

  1192. took our full humanity

  1193. into himself

  1194. and he bore

  1195. the image

  1196. of God

  1197. perfectly.

  1198. Jesus lived

  1199. a perfect life

  1200. of dignity

  1201. and life-giving

  1202. authority.

  1203. But after three years

  1204. of public ministry,

  1205. he would go

  1206. to his death

  1207. and Pilate,

  1208. the Roman governor,

  1209. would declare

  1210. at Jesus' trial,

  1211. what would he say?

  1212. Behold

  1213. the man.

  1214. Were truer words

  1215. ever spoken

  1216. because indeed,

1217. Jesus was the true human.

  1218. Behold

  1219. the man.

  1220. And yet,

  1221. at that moment

  1222. when Pilate

  1223. uttered those words,

  1224. Jesus had actually

  1225. been stripped

  1226. of his dignity

  1227. and his authority.

  1228. So that our dignity

  1229. could be restored,

  1230. Jesus was losing his

  1231. and then hung naked

  1232. on a cross.

1233. And so that our authority

  1234. could be repaired,

  1235. behold the man,

  1236. he was made powerless

  1237. and died.

1238. But on the third day,

  1239. Jesus,

  1240. having laid down

  1241. his dignity

  1242. and having laid down

  1243. his authority,

  1244. took it up again.

  1245. Jesus,

  1246. fully God

  1247. and fully human,

  1248. rose from the grave

  1249. and rising,

  1250. he began

  1251. a new creation

  1252. so that those

  1253. united to him,

  1254. connected to him

  1255. through faith

  1256. by the Holy Spirit

  1257. would receive

  1258. forgiveness of sins

  1259. and would be

  1260. renewed in the image

  1261. of God.

  1262. And Jesus ascended

  1263. to the right hand

  1264. of the Father

  1265. so that united

  1266. to him through faith

  1267. we might be restored

  1268. in God's commission

  1269. to care

  1270. and steward

  1271. for God's creation

  1272. once again,

  1273. now under the leadership

  1274. of a good king.

  1275. So friends,

  1276. what story

  1277. are you telling?

  1278. The invitation

  1279. to us this morning

  1280. is to unite

  1281. our story

  1282. to the story

  1283. of Jesus

  1284. and through

  1285. living faith

  1286. in him,

  1287. our risen king,

  1288. our true lord,

  1289. the living,

  1290. true human,

  1291. we can be restored

  1292. to the dignity

  1293. and authority

  1294. that God created us

  1295. to have

  1296. in the very beginning.

  1297. And that gift

  1298. of grace

  1299. through Jesus Christ

  1300. will know

  1301. no end.

  1302. The end

  1303. of the story.

  1304. The Bible

  1305. ends with heaven

  1306. and earth

  1307. being united

  1308. at last.

  1309. those in Christ

  1310. seeing God

  1311. face to face

  1312. and Revelation 25

  1313. says and they

  1314. will reign

  1315. forever

  1316. and ever.

  1317. What began

  1318. in creation

  1319. and was lost

  1320. in Adam

  1321. has been

  1322. regained

  1323. in Christ

  1324. and has offered

  1325. to us now

  1326. to live out

  1327. in this age

  1328. and on

  1329. into the age

  1330. to come.

  1331. So you see now

  1332. what it means

  1333. to be the church?

  1334. Here,

  1335. now,

  1336. in New Haven?

  1337. it means

  1338. through Christ

  1339. to bear

  1340. God's image

  1341. to show

  1342. the world

  1343. together

  1344. what it means

  1345. to be truly

  1346. human,

  1347. to be a sign

  1348. of what's in store

  1349. and then

  1350. to invite

  1351. everyone

  1352. to join in

  1353. because it's

  1354. on the basis

  1355. not of

  1356. what we do

  1357. but on what

  1358. Jesus

  1359. has done.

  1360. The image

  1361. of God.

  1362. Let's pray.

  1363. Father,

  1364. we pray

  1365. this morning

  1366. that you

  1367. would help

  1368. the things

  1369. that you

  1370. have been

  1371. teaching us

  1372. in your word

  1373. here in Genesis 1

  1374. to sink down.

  1375. Lord,

  1376. many of us

  1377. here this

  1378. morning

  1379. do not

  1380. feel dignified.

  1381. God,

  1382. if we're honest,

  1383. we feel ashamed

  1384. and embarrassed.

  1385. Help to fix

  1386. our eyes

  1387. on Jesus

  1388. who for us

  1389. and for our

  1390. salvation

  1391. out of love

  1392. came and bore

  1393. all the shame

  1394. for us

  1395. so that we

  1396. might be

  1397. renewed.

  1398. Father,

  1399. many of us

  1400. are feeling

  1401. powerless

  1402. and stuck,

  1403. feeling like

  1404. our day-to-day

  1405. is just a dead

  1406. end.

  1407. But Lord

  1408. Jesus,

  1409. if you reign

  1410. on your throne

  1411. as you do

  1412. and if we

  1413. are your people,

  1414. your body

  1415. on earth,

  1416. then surely

  1417. none of our

  1418. labor is in vain.

  1419. God,

  1420. I pray

  1421. that you

  1422. would help

  1423. us as a

  1424. church

  1425. and as

  1426. Christians

  1427. to catch

  1428. a fresh

  1429. vision

  1430. for how

  1431. you're

  1432. using

  1433. our

  1434. lives,

  1435. even in

  1436. the mundane,

  1437. to make

  1438. much of

  1439. you.

  1440. And Father,

  1441. I know

  1442. there are

  1443. some here

  1444. this morning

  1445. who,

  1446. Lord,

  1447. aren't quite

  1448. sure what

  1449. to make

  1450. of all

  1451. this.

  1452. God,

  1453. I pray

  1454. that you

  1455. would give

  1456. them the

  1457. courage

  1458. to ask

  1459. for clarity,

  1460. to ask

  1461. for the

  1462. opening of

  1463. their hearts,

  1464. that God,

  1465. if you are

  1466. real,

  1467. and if it

  1468. is true,

  1469. you've made

  1470. us in your

  1471. image,

  1472. and if it

  1473. is true

  1474. that Jesus

  1475. has come

  1476. to heal

  1477. that image

  1478. and to

  1479. make us

  1480. new,

  1481. Lord,

  1482. I pray

  1483. that they

  1484. would have

  1485. the courage

  1486. to ask

  1487. you to

  1488. reveal that

  1489. to them.

  1490. And then

  1491. I pray

  1492. that you

  1493. would give

  1494. them the

  1495. courage

  1496. and the

  1497. desire

  1498. to step

  1499. into it

  1500. by your

  1501. spirit.

  1502. Lord,

  1503. we ask

  1504. all this

  1505. in the

  1506. name of

  1507. Christ.

  1508. Amen.

  1509. Well,

  1510. the song

  1511. that we're

  1512. going to

  1513. close with

  1514. this morning

  1515. is Jesus

  1516. Shall

  1517. Reign.

  1518. This is a

  1519. song about

  1520. Christ being

  1521. the true

  1522. king and

  1523. how his

  1524. kingdom will

  1525. spread throughout

  1526. the whole

  1527. world and

  1528. how we,

  1529. his followers,

  1530. get to be a

  1531. part of that

  1532. work and

  1533. get to share

  1534. in that joy.

  1535. So let's

  1536. stand and let's

  1537. sing this

  1538. together in

  1539. response.

  1540. so let's
