  1. As we turn now to God's word,

  2. just to say it again for those of you who maybe knew

  3. that one of the commitments of our church

  4. and as we've just been singing

  5. about the cornerstone of Jesus Christ,

  6. the way that we know him is through his word.

  7. And so every week we open up the Bible

  8. and we look at it carefully together.

  9. To see what it has to say to us today.

  10. I'm not gonna preach on building projects.

  11. I'm gonna preach on what comes next in the book of Genesis,

  12. which is where we're in.

  13. So if you wanna turn with me in your pew Bibles,

  14. Genesis 2 is where we'll be.

  15. That'll be on page two in your pew Bible.

  16. And as you turn there,

  17. will you also pray with me this morning?

  18. Lord Jesus, we praise you for your faithfulness

  19. and your goodness to us

  20. that you have shown to us in Jesus Christ

  21. as we have just been singing.

  22. And Lord, now as we turn to your word,

  23. we pray that we would see your goodness

  24. in your creative acts, Lord,

  25. and in the way that you have made us as human beings.

  26. Lord, I ask that you would help me this morning.

  27. Lord, that you would help all of us

  28. to understand your word,

  29. to know its truth,

  30. to receive it as good,

  31. to rejoice in your plan for us.

  32. Lord, and that as we do this,

  33. that we might know you more

  34. and what it means to know

  35. how to live in a relationship with you.

  36. God, be with us, I pray.

  37. In Jesus' name, amen.

  38. Sam Smith is a Grammy award-winning singer.

  39. Sam announced this week

  40. that they are asking to be called

  41. by the pronouns they and them,

  42. having also publicly made known

  43. that they have embraced

  44. a non-binary gender identity.

  45. If you are a follower

  46. of the ABC show Bachelors in Paradise,

  47. you may know that they also had

  48. a groundbreaking event this week

  49. as the first same-sex proposal occurred

  50. with contestants Demi Burnett

  51. proposing to Christian Hagerty.

  52. These were simply a few of the headlines

  53. in the news this week

  54. as I open up CNN.com,

  55. perusing the news outlets

  56. to know what's going on in the world.

  57. And as keen observers have noticed,

  58. the fact of these news stories

  59. and their proliferation

  60. remind us of the rapidity of change

  61. in our culture's views

  62. on some of the most core aspects

  63. of human identity,

  64. our gender,

  65. our understanding of relationships,

  66. of sex,

  67. and marriage.

  68. And these questions, of course,

  69. have always been there

  70. in every society throughout history.

  71. But we might fairly say

  72. that in the last 30 years,

  73. these topics were not discussed

  74. and certainly not celebrated

  75. as openly as they are today.

  76. These important issues, of course,

  77. are not simply out in the media,

  78. but it is in our everyday lives as well.

  79. These are issues that affect our neighbors,

  80. our classmates,

  81. our coworkers.

  82. And it's not just out there either.

  83. It's in here, isn't it?

  84. Some of you in this room

  85. have wrestled with questions

  86. of gender and identity,

  87. of sexual orientation and attraction,

  88. of understanding marriage

  89. and relationships.

  90. These are important conversations

  91. and we need to address them

  92. with kind thoughtfulness,

  93. with courageous compassion

  94. and straightforward clarity.

  95. And we begin this morning

  96. by confessing that the church

  97. has not always done this well.

  98. And the church is not always

  99. doing it well today.

  100. And yet it brings us

  101. to the question that we have,

  102. which is,

  103. what does God's word say to us

  104. today

  105. about human identity,

  106. particularly about gender

  107. and marriage?

  108. I did not pick this topic

  109. because I thought it was time

  110. to preach on this.

  111. I picked this topic

  112. because as we come to Genesis,

  113. Genesis 2,

    Genesis 2:18–25

  114. verses 18 through 25,

  115. these are the very things

  116. that this passage addresses.

  117. And so as we continue to that,

  118. if you want to turn with me there,

  119. we'll look at that.

  120. We're going to start in verse 18.

  121. And remember where we're at in Genesis.

  122. Genesis 1 was this cosmic view

  123. from God's perspective

  124. of the creation of all things.

  125. And then Genesis 2

  126. was this zoom in

  127. on the creation,

  128. particularly of humanity

  129. and of male and female

  130. and what that looks like.

  131. And the specifics

  132. of God's created order,

  133. which in the end

  134. he declared

  135. to be very good

  136. are the things

  137. we're going to explore today.

  138. To try to understand

  139. why God declares

  140. these things

  141. profoundly good

  142. and reflective

  143. of God's goodness

  144. in our lives.

  145. So let's look at Genesis 2.

  146. We're going to start

  147. in verse 18.

  148. And we'll read

  149. to the end of the chapter.

  150. Then the Lord God said,

  151. It is not good

  152. that the man should be alone.

  153. I will make him a helper

  154. fit for him.

  155. Now out of the ground,

  156. the Lord God had formed

  157. every beast of the field

  158. and every bird of the heavens

  159. and brought them to the man

  160. to see what he would call them.

  161. And whatever the man called

  162. every living creature,

  163. that was its name.

  164. The man gave names

  165. to all livestock

  166. and to the birds

  167. of the heavens

  168. and to every beast

  169. of the field.

  170. But for Adam,

  171. there was not found

  172. a helper fit for him.

  173. So the Lord God

  174. caused a deep sleep

  175. to fall upon the man

  176. and while he slept,

  177. took one of his ribs

  178. and closed up its place

  179. with flesh.

  180. And the rib

  181. that the Lord God

  182. had taken

  183. from the man

  184. he made into a woman

  185. and brought her

  186. to the man.

  187. And then the man said,

  188. This at last

  189. is bone of my bones

  190. and flesh of my flesh

  191. and she shall be called woman

  192. because she was taken out of man.

  193. Therefore a man shall leave

  194. his father and his mother

  195. and hold fast to his wife

  196. and they shall become

  197. one flesh.

  198. And the man

  199. and his wife

  200. were both naked

  201. and were not ashamed.

  202. What do we learn

  203. in this passage

  204. about gender

  205. and sex

  206. and marriage?

  207. And is God's plan

  208. really good

  209. for us?

  210. It's a big question.

  211. We're going to try

  212. to tackle as much of it

  213. as we can this morning.

  214. Here's how we're going

  215. to do it.

  216. We're going to look

  217. at one story.

  218. We're going to look

  219. at two topics

  220. and then we're going

  221. to ask three questions

  222. and then one final word.

  223. So if you're taking notes,

  224. there's your outline.

  225. One story,

  226. two topics,

  227. three questions

  228. and a final word.

  229. Yep, we can do this.

  230. Alright.

  231. So, first of all,

  232. the story.

  233. We have to recognize

  234. God brings this to us

  235. in a narrative.

  236. This is not a didactic

  237. procedural description

  238. but a narrative story.

  239. And what we've seen

  240. so far in this story

  241. is that God

  242. is the creator

  243. of everything

  244. and everything he created

  245. in its original form

  246. was good.

  247. And the pinnacle,

  248. the high point,

  249. the end point

  250. of his creation

  251. was the creation

  252. of humanity.

  253. Uniquely among

  254. all of his creations

  255. made in his image

  256. and made to rule over

  257. all of the rest

  258. of his creation.

  259. To bear his image

  260. by reflecting his character

  261. and his nature

  262. and representing him

  263. in the world.

  264. And in this whole story

  265. we've seen this

  266. fundamental givenness,

  267. God is the creator

  268. and he has made

  269. the world the way

  270. he has chosen to do so

  271. in order to reveal himself

  272. and to display his glory.

  273. And this is a good plan

  274. that he has made

  275. and we as his creations

  276. are meant to explore

  277. and understand

  278. and enjoy his goodness

  279. in this creation.

  280. So, having said that,

  281. this is the background

  282. of the story.

  283. We come to Genesis 2,

    Genesis 2:18

  284. verse 18.

  285. And if we're reading carefully,

  286. we have come to

  287. a very shocking moment

  288. in verse 18.

  289. The Lord God said,

  290. it is not good.

  291. How could this be?

  292. How could anything

  293. in this creation

  294. be not good?

  295. God has said,

  296. everything is good

  297. and it flows

  298. from his goodness

  299. and there's been no hint

  300. of any not goodness

  301. until now

  302. and then suddenly

  303. there is this problem

  304. that presents itself.

  305. It is not good

  306. for man

  307. and in this case,

  308. man is now

  309. a gendered being,

  310. not just humanity broadly,

  311. but the gendered,

  312. the male part

  313. of the human species.

  314. It is not good

  315. for him to be alone.

  316. And God states

  317. his intention.

  318. I will create

  319. a helper

  320. fit for him.

  321. A helper,

  322. the word is azer,

  323. is a strong ally,

  324. a companion,

  325. one who comes alongside,

  326. the way that God

  327. comes alongside

  328. his nation Israel

  329. throughout his history

  330. to be their strength

  331. and to help them

  332. to accomplish

  333. all that he intends.

  334. God says,

  335. I will create

  336. a helper

  337. and a helper fit.

  338. What does that mean

  339. by fit?

  340. What we see

  341. as the story goes on,

  342. God is unpacking

  343. what fit means.

  344. Fit might be

  345. also translated

  346. corresponding to

  347. of the same type,

  348. but we'll see

  349. how this,

  350. because what happens

  351. is that God

  352. then brings

  353. the animals

  354. that he's created

  355. to Adam

  356. and Adam

  357. in his image

  358. of Godness

  359. gives them names,

  360. seeing who they are

  361. and in expressing

  362. his dominion

  363. over creation

  364. by doing this.

  365. but the point

  366. of that

  367. is not really

  368. to talk about that.

  369. The point of that

  370. is to show

  371. that none of them

  372. are fit

  373. for Adam.

  374. None of them,

  375. though they have

  376. God's image in them

  377. or God's glory

  378. displayed

  379. in a broad way,

  380. the way nature

  381. displays God's nature,

  382. they are not

  383. in God's image

  384. and they are not

  385. fit

  386. for male humanity.

  387. They are not

  388. a companion

  389. for them.

  390. And so,

  391. God says,

  392. now that you

  393. have seen this Adam,

  394. that none of these

  395. are fit,

  396. this is where we see

  397. in the end

  398. of chapter 20,

  399. none of them

  400. are according

  401. to his kind,

  402. so there was not

  403. a helper fit

  404. for him,

  405. and he puts

  406. the man to sleep,

  407. and he takes

  408. part of his body

  409. out

  410. and from that body

  411. he then forms

  412. of the same essence,

  413. creates woman

  414. to be with man.

  415. Now,

  416. we have to,

  417. one commentator

  418. says this,

  419. as we think about

  420. how this happens,

  421. commentating on

  422. this helper

  423. being

  424. what the relationship

  425. is.

  426. Man does not have

  427. a governmental

  428. priority,

  429. but a mutual

  430. dependence.

  431. Man is created

  432. first with a woman

  433. to help the man,

  434. not vice versa.

  435. However,

  436. this does not mean

  437. an ontological

  438. superiority

  439. or inferiority.

  440. The word

  441. signifies her

  442. essential contribution,

  443. not inadequacy.

  444. What God

  445. is creating

  446. is not

  447. a maid

  448. to clean up

  449. your dirty socks,

  450. or a cook

  451. to make sure

  452. you have a meal.

  453. What God

  454. is creating

  455. is a partner

  456. and a companion

  457. and a necessary

  458. help

  459. so that

  460. male and female

  461. together

  462. might carry out

  463. God's word.

  464. Notice that

  465. Matthew Henry,

  466. the old-time

  467. commentator,

  468. makes a great

  469. comment about

  470. what part

  471. of the body

  472. did God

  473. pull out.

  474. Not

  475. made out

  476. of the top

  477. of his head

  478. so that

  479. she might

  480. be over him,

  481. not out

  482. of his feet

  483. to be trampled

  484. upon by him,

  485. but out of his

  486. side to be

  487. equal with him,

  488. under his arm

  489. to be protected

  490. by him,

  491. and near his

  492. heart to be

  493. loved by him.

  494. God chose

  495. a rib

  496. to signify

  497. the along-sideness

  498. of the creation

  499. of woman

  500. to be man.

  501. And then,

  502. as he wakes

  503. up,

  504. God brings

  505. her to him

  506. the way a

  507. father brings

  508. his daughter

  509. down the aisle

  510. in a wedding

  511. ceremony.

  512. And like

  513. many grooms,

  514. Adam responds

  515. with a song,

  516. with a poem,

  517. finally,

  518. I saw

  519. the inadequacy

  520. of all

  521. these other

  522. things.

  523. Now,

  524. this is the

  525. one that

  526. I was made

  527. for.

  528. This is the

  529. one that I

  530. need.

  531. Bone of my

  532. bones and

  533. flesh of my

  534. flesh,

  535. I will give

  536. her a name

  537. woman.

  538. That means

  539. that she's

  540. with me

  541. and we

  542. together

  543. are going

  544. to do

  545. what God

  546. has called

  547. us to do.

  548. She is

  549. my companion,

  550. my counterpart.

  551. And through

  552. her,

  553. God will

  554. allow us

  555. together to

  556. fulfill the

  557. command to

  558. be fruitful

  559. and to

  560. multiply and

  561. have dominion

  562. over the

  563. earth.

  564. What a

  565. good news

  566. this is.

  567. And then

  568. the narrator

  569. jumps in

  570. in verses

  571. 24 and

  572. 25.

  573. He's been

  574. telling the

  575. story about

  576. Adam and

  577. Eve and

  578. then you

  579. see he

  580. steps back

  581. and he

  582. takes a

  583. narrator role

  584. for two

  585. verses.

  586. He says,

  587. therefore a

  588. man shall

  589. leave his

  590. father and

  591. his mother

  592. and hold

  593. fast to

  594. his wife

  595. and they

  596. shall become

  597. one flesh.

  598. And the

  599. man and

  600. his wife

  601. were both

  602. naked and

  603. were not

  604. ashamed.

  605. Do you

  606. notice how

  607. incongruous

  608. this is?

  609. Because Adam

  610. and Eve don't

  611. have parents.

  612. There is no

  613. leaving to be

  614. done.

  615. This is not

  616. about Adam

  617. and Eve in

  618. the garden,

  619. the creation

  620. of the first

  621. man and

  622. woman.

  623. This is about

  624. the pattern

  625. that is being

  626. established in

  627. this text that

  628. male and

  629. female would

  630. live out this

  631. calling together.

  632. And it has

  633. these beautiful

  634. pictures.

  635. This marriage is

  636. meant to be for

  637. a lifetime.

  638. They leave all

  639. other loyalties to

  640. make this their

  641. primary loyalty.

  642. And they will

  643. hold fast to one

  644. another in

  645. commitment to one

  646. another till

  647. death do us

  648. part as the

  649. old vows say

  650. it.

  651. and they

  652. become one

  653. flesh.

  654. And certainly

  655. this is a

  656. biological union

  657. where procreation

  658. is happening

  659. and where joy

  660. and serving

  661. and giving

  662. pleasure to

  663. one another

  664. is a part

  665. of this

  666. incredible good

  667. gift that God

  668. has given us.

  669. But it's more

  670. than just a

  671. one flesh

  672. biologically.

  673. It's a one

  674. flesh that

  675. creates a new

  676. unity.

  677. Think about

  678. this.

  679. God took a

  680. rib out of

  681. Adam to

  682. create another

  683. being and now

  684. he's calling

  685. them to come

  686. back together

  687. in a kind of

  688. union and a

  689. kind of unity

  690. that is full

  691. orbed, that

  692. encompasses all

  693. of life.

  694. Where two

  695. individuals come

  696. together and

  697. God creates a

  698. new one of a

  699. marriage.

  700. God is

  701. separated so

  702. that he might

  703. pair them

  704. together in a

  705. unity.

  706. And it is

  707. almost

  708. unbelievably

  709. beautiful.

  710. Verse 25 is

  711. one of the most

  712. shocking verses

  713. in this whole

  714. passage.

  715. They were

  716. naked.

  717. They were not

  718. ashamed.

  719. And we don't

  720. know what that

  721. looks like.

  722. Because we don't

  723. live on the

  724. right side of the

  725. fall of humanity

  726. to know what that

  727. could actually be

  728. like.

  729. But it is a

  730. beautiful thing.

  731. this story points

  732. to God in his

  733. fatherly care and

  734. his creative majesty

  735. making humanity

  736. male and female

  737. gendered and

  738. bringing them

  739. together in

  740. marriage.

  741. Complimentary

  742. companionship for

  743. the calling that

  744. God has put on

  745. them.

  746. these then are our

  747. two topics aren't

  748. they?

  749. The story has

  750. brought us to

  751. this.

  752. So now we have

  753. two topics before

  754. us.

  755. One is gender and

  756. one is marriage.

  757. How do we think

  758. about these things?

  759. And I am sure that

  760. you are already

  761. sitting there with a

  762. list of questions.

  763. Here is what I want

  764. to encourage you to

  765. do.

  766. Write them down on

  767. your bulletin.

  768. Put them in your

  769. notes.

  770. Hopefully we will get

  771. to some of them

  772. today.

  773. And if we don't

  774. by the end of the

  775. time I at least

  776. will have given you

  777. some guideposts on

  778. where you can go to

  779. think through some of

  780. them.

  781. Alright?

  782. So topic number one.

  783. Gender as God's

  784. good gift.

  785. What God has done in

  786. creating humanity is

  787. gendered male and

  788. female is described

  789. as good.

  790. And what I want to

  791. do is describe that

  792. goodness as best as I

  793. can so we can parse

  794. that out.

  795. First, this gender

  796. has an equality to

  797. it.

  798. Genesis 1 says he

  799. created them.

  800. Let's look at it to

  801. make sure I get it

  802. right.

  803. So God created man in

  804. his own image.

  805. In the image of God

  806. he created him.

  807. Male and female he

  808. created them.

  809. And in this poetic

  810. form he says there's

  811. this humanity that God

  812. is creating and man is

  813. a generic term for

  814. humanity until the

  815. third line where he

  816. changes the words to

  817. say male and female

  818. he created them.

  819. And together then they

  820. receive the commission

  821. and the calling to live

  822. out to have dominion to

  823. be fruitful and multiply.

  824. They're both in God's

  825. image.

  826. Both are blessed and

  827. both are commissioned.

  828. And then in Genesis 2 we

  829. see that God is

  830. reinforcing their

  831. equality.

  832. The woman is made out

  833. of the same stuff as

  834. man.

  835. She is not lesser.

  836. She is not other.

  837. She is not different.

  838. She is of the same

  839. essence and substance

  840. as the man.

  841. She is distinct from

  842. all the other animals

  843. of creation in this

  844. way.

  845. And the story highlights

  846. this.

  847. And we need to start

  848. with this equality

  849. because we know in

  850. human history how

  851. easily the distinction

  852. of gender has been

  853. used as a basis

  854. for abuse.

  855. We know how

  856. quickly we

  857. oppress those

  858. who are different

  859. from us by making

  860. them other.

  861. Making ourselves

  862. bigger by making

  863. others smaller.

  864. And gender is one

  865. of the ways that we

  866. have done this.

  867. That is not what God

  868. has created in this

  869. story.

  870. That is not what God

  871. has done.

  872. And there is no

  873. room for hatred.

  874. There is no room for

  875. dismissing women as

  876. lesser in value in

  877. society.

  878. And we must

  879. acknowledge that even

  880. the church at times,

  881. maybe more so than not,

  882. has struggled to do

  883. this well and to honor

  884. men and women equally as

  885. co-heirs and as co-laborers

  886. in the gospel.

  887. It is in the Bible.

  888. And yet we have failed

  889. to live it out often in

  890. our culture and in our

  891. church broadly.

  892. So we need to recognize

  893. that this equality is an

  894. essential starting point

  895. for understanding gender

  896. because then the next

  897. move is to see that there

  898. is distinction.

  899. There is a male and

  900. female.

  901. And this is a part of a

  902. pattern that you see more

  903. broadly in God's creative

  904. act.

  905. When he created the world

  906. back in Genesis 1, he

  907. created light and dark

  908. that go together.

  909. He created day and night

  910. that are complementary,

  911. distinct things that are

  912. paired together.

  913. He created sky and sea.

  914. He created land, dry land

  915. and water.

  916. And all of these things are

  917. God separating and creating

  918. distinction so that there

  919. might be a unified whole

  920. that is the beauty of God's

  921. creation.

  922. And this is exactly what God

  923. is doing with male and

  924. female.

  925. He's saying humanity is not

  926. an androgynous, genderless

  927. being, but humanity is this

  928. beautiful pairing of two

  929. distinct genders.

  930. Not interchangeable, but

  931. distinct from one another.

  932. And we see this in the way.

  933. We see that man was created

  934. first and that the woman

  935. was created to be his

  936. alongside companion, his

  937. helper.

  938. We see that man was given

  939. the command to leave his

  940. parents and to cleave to his

  941. wife uniquely.

  942. So we see throughout this

  943. story that God is making

  944. these distinctions.

  945. And of course, it's not that

  946. hard to stop and to say,

  947. as we look around, men and

  948. women actually look different.

  949. Our gender is a biological

  950. reality.

  951. The Olympics recognize this.

  952. When there's a hundred meter

  953. dash, there's a men's event and

  954. a women's event.

  955. That reflects some of the

  956. biological distinction.

  957. Now, we need to be extremely

  958. careful how we think through

  959. and apply those things.

  960. But that is a part of the

  961. givenness of how God has

  962. created humanity, male and

  963. female, with distinct gender.

  964. So just a brief pause to

  965. apply this.

  966. We must recognize that in our

  967. culture, and this is not the

  968. first time it's happened in

  969. human history, but in our

  970. culture today, there are

  971. impulses to erase gender from

  972. our sense of human identity.

  973. There are ways in which gender

  974. distinctions are being

  975. minimized.

  976. And some of it comes from a

  977. good heart to overcome the

  978. discrimination and the

  979. oppression that has happened.

  980. And some of it comes from a

  981. desire to really have

  982. equality be established.

  983. And yet, we must recognize

  984. this is not God's plan.

  985. Another headline this week I

  986. saw was an article about

  987. raising babies.

  988. Maybe you're familiar with

  989. this.

  990. Some are seeking to raise

  991. their children as genderless

  992. children.

  993. out of fear of imposing upon

  994. them some gendered stereotype

  995. or expectations that would

  996. feel oppressive to them.

  997. This is just one example,

  998. perhaps, of how our culture is

  999. thinking about these things.

1000. And we need to see that that is

  1001. a departure from God's creative

  1002. purpose.

  1003. From God's creative order.

1004. So we have equality and we have

1005. distinction, but we finally have

  1006. the complementary nature.

1007. That, in fact, the two of them are

  1008. meant to fit together.

  1009. Right?

1010. They're meant to go together.

1011. There is an inseparableness as well

1012. as a distinctiveness about male and

  1013. female.

1014. Clearly, this happens in biology.

1015. We don't have men and women.

  1016. We don't have children.

1017. We cannot be fruitful and multiply

1018. if we don't have men and women.

1019. And even in a modern science,

1020. when we can do some of that

1021. finagling and test tubes and

  1022. outside of human bodies,

1023. we still need men and women.

1024. We still need to create the

1025. appropriate products so that we can

  1026. actually have procreation.

1027. But, of course, it is much more

  1028. than that.

1029. The complementary nature is much

  1030. more than that.

1031. Because this doing it together,

  1032. this companionship, this partnership

1033. that God has created has an

  1034. interdependence.

1035. And now here's the challenge.

1036. What does that actually look like?

1037. Does it look like boys like trucks

  1038. and girls like dolls?

1039. Or boys like blue and girls like pink?

1040. Friends, I'll just tell you,

  1041. they're not biblical categories.

1042. They may be true of your children.

  1043. They may not.

1044. They may be true of you.

  1045. They may not.

1046. They are not biblical categories.

1047. If you look back and you think about it,

1048. think about how even the expectations

1049. of what gendered expression looks like,

  1050. how it's changed.

1051. 300 years ago in England,

1052. men wore wigs and hosiery.

1053. I mean, just to say it,

  1054. like it's different, right?

1055. The cultural expression of manhood and womanhood

1056. has been a moving target

1057. throughout all of human history.

  1058. You may be guessing,

  1059. I'm hedging on this.

1060. I'm not going to give you lists

1061. of what masculinity and femininity look like.

1062. You know, what I do want to tell you a story

  1063. about this.

1064. And that was that I came to faith in Christ

1065. right before my senior year in high school.

1066. And I went off to college

1067. having never thought about any of these things

1068. or what the Bible has to say.

1069. And I was involved in a great church

1070. and a great campus ministry

1071. that really made me think through

1072. what is the Bible saying?

1073. How do I live under it?

1074. And I was confronted by a view of gender

1075. that I had never really examined

  1076. or thought about before.

1077. But you know, in the context of that,

1078. I had three married couples.

1079. Actually, one guy was single most of the time

1080. and then he got married near the end.

1081. There were three couples though that I saw

1082. that all embraced this distinction,

1083. equality, and complementarity in gender.

1084. And yet each one of those couples

  1085. had different personalities.

  1086. They had different dynamics

1087. in the way that they lived out the distinctions,

1088. in the way that they led and served

  1089. and helped one another

1090. to be the people that God wanted them to be

1091. and to do the things that God had called them to do.

1092. And the sum was greater than their parts

  1093. in each case.

1094. But if you talk to those three women,

1095. there might be some broad characteristics

  1096. that they would say,

1097. these are things that we feel are important.

1098. But man, they are so different

1099. that for me to stand here

1100. and try to give you a short list of,

1101. well, women are like this

1102. and men are like this

1103. and this is the way it should be,

  1104. I can promise you

1105. that at least 20% of you would say

  1106. that doesn't fit.

1107. Because the breadth of the creative work

1108. that God has done in creating each one of us

  1109. is broad enough.

1110. And what I want to do is,

1111. rather than give you that list,

1112. I want to invite you to a conversation.

1113. A conversation with one another

1114. about what does that look like in your life?

1115. I want to call you to a pursuit.

1116. If you are a woman,

  1117. to ask yourself,

  1118. how am I thankful

1119. that God has created me, a woman?

1120. And in what way is that unique?

  1121. If I am a man,

1122. how do I thank God

1123. that he has made me a man?

  1124. And in what ways

1125. does that call me uniquely to follow him?

  1126. And in our marriages

  1127. and in our relationships

  1128. outside of marriage,

1129. to think how do we honor one another

1130. in the distinctiveness of our gender

1131. as brothers and sisters in Christ?

1132. Much more could be said,

1133. but the clock is ticking.

1134. I'm only on my second topic.

1135. I've got three questions to go

  1136. and it's 11.15.

  1137. So, let's keep moving.

  1138. I will say this.

1139. There is already a great Sunday school

  1140. on our website

1141. and there will be another Sunday school

1142. coming up later this fall

1143. that will address some of these issues more so.

  1144. Second topic, marriage.

1145. I want to highlight four things

1146. that God says about marriage

  1147. in this passage.

1148. As we see that when God created

  1149. gendered beings,

1150. he then brought them together

  1151. into this union.

  1152. Okay?

1153. This was the very central piece.

  1154. Gender and marriage

  1155. were tied explicitly together

1156. and this leads to the first point

1157. that I want to say.

1158. As one commentator said it,

1159. it is notable that there is only one Eve.

1160. There are not multiple Eves,

1161. nor is there another male,

  1162. but there is monogamy

  1163. and heterosexuality

1164. built into the created order

  1165. of marriage.

1166. This is the way God has made it to be.

1167. That the woman is a counterpart to man

1168. and together in their gender distinctiveness,

1169. their marriage is meant to display

1170. all that God has for them in marriage.

  1171. This is the pattern.

1172. I know this is controversial.

1173. I know I just threw a grenade into the room.

  1174. Stay with me.

  1175. We're going to add,

1176. the questions are going to address

  1177. some of the things

1178. that just jumped up in your mind

  1179. about what about,

  1180. so hold on.

1181. But that's the first thing I want to say.

1182. Second thing is that it is

  1183. a committed relationship.

  1184. God's intention is that

1185. a man shall leave his father and mother

1186. and shall cleave to his wife

1187. and come together in this committed union

1188. that is intended to be unbreakable

  1189. apart from death.

1190. This is why the scripture says

  1191. that God hates divorce.

1192. And I know that this is a very fallen world

1193. and there are lots of things for us to be said

1194. about how that plays out in the fallen world,

1195. but we want to see that God's created purpose in this

1196. was a committed lifelong relationship

1197. and that this is good,

1198. that it would have a priority

  1199. over all other relationships,

  1200. familial or otherwise.

  1201. Recognize how countercultural

1202. that would have been in the ancient Near East

1203. where your wife would be more important

1204. than your parents or your tribe or your clan.

1205. And it is a pattern that is universal in creation.

  1206. It's for all people.

  1207. So,

1208. we have the gendered heterosexuality,

  1209. we have commitment,

  1210. third, we have union.

  1211. for one flesh,

  1212. for sex and companionship.

1213. And we need to recognize

  1214. that God gave us

  1215. this incredibly powerful gift

1216. of the act of human intercourse

1217. as a gift to be done

  1218. within the safe confines

  1219. of that committed relationship

  1220. with one another.

1221. this is a good gift

1222. that God has given us,

1223. but it is not for all places

  1224. and not all contexts.

1225. It is given as a part of this picture

1226. that the man will leave his father and mother

1227. and cleave to his wife

1228. and they shall become one flesh.

  1229. This is the context

1230. in which we are meant

  1231. in God's created purpose

1232. for us to live out

  1233. this desire

1234. that so dominates our culture

  1235. and our world today.

  1236. More on that later.

1237. Let me be just as explicit.

  1238. Therefore,

1239. outside of a heterosexual marriage,

  1240. it is not good

1241. for us to be sexually active,

  1242. whether that's

1243. outside of the commitment of marriage,

1244. outside of the heterosexuality of marriage,

1245. outside of the union of marriage.

  1246. It is not good.

  1247. Then the fourth thing

1248. that I want you to see

1249. is that in this context,

  1250. in its created goodness,

1251. it was a beautiful thing.

  1252. Adam rejoiced.

1253. His heart leapt out of his chest

1254. when he saw the one

1255. that he was made for

1256. and who was made for him.

  1257. Not to rule over,

  1258. but because finally,

1259. this one that was like him

  1260. was brought to him.

  1261. And it was beautiful.

  1262. And they were naked

  1263. and they were unashamed.

1264. What a beautiful picture that is

  1265. of a relationship

1266. and how our hearts long

1267. for that kind of acceptance

  1268. and transparency

  1269. and intimacy.

1270. So this is God's ordained social unit.

1271. It is the fundamental unit

1272. of human society and creation

1273. and the means of carrying out the commands.

1274. So how do we apply this?

  1275. Well, first of all,

  1276. in our world today,

  1277. we need to clarify

  1278. what marriage means

1279. and then we need to celebrate

1280. what God does mean by marriage.

  1281. We need to see

  1282. that heterosexual, monogamous,

  1283. faithful, lifelong marriage

  1284. is a good thing.

1285. We are meant to cultivate it

  1286. and invest in it.

1287. And if you are single,

1288. it's okay for you to long for it.

  1289. It's also okay

1290. if you don't long for it right now.

  1291. We'll get to that.

1292. That's one of my questions.

  1293. We'll get there.

  1294. But to value it,

  1295. to support it

1296. in your friends who are married,

  1297. to know about it

1298. so that you can do so.

  1299. We ought to rejoice

  1300. that God created marriage

  1301. in its goodness

1302. and in its original form.

  1303. Two really brief advertisements.

  1304. In your bulletin,

  1305. there is an announcement.

  1306. On November 2nd,

1307. we are having a marriage seminar

  1308. here at this church.

  1309. Alistair Groves,

  1310. who works for CCEF,

1311. is coming to speak on marriage.

  1312. There's a whole description

  1313. in your flyer.

  1314. Think about,

  1315. for those of you

  1316. who are married

  1317. or maybe are close

  1318. to being married

1319. or even want to just support

  1320. those who are married,

  1321. consider coming,

  1322. setting aside that Saturday

1323. to come and be a part of it.

  1324. There's also an announcement

  1325. on a separate page

  1326. about Family Life.

1327. Family Life is a national ministry

  1328. that runs this thing

  1329. called Weekend to Remember

  1330. and they're running

  1331. some great discounts.

  1332. If you are interested

  1333. in going to this

  1334. as a married couple

1335. just to do some tune-up work

  1336. on your relationship,

  1337. to get away

1338. and to focus for a little while

  1339. on the Lord

  1340. and on one another,

1341. these are some great opportunities

1342. for you to invest in it.

  1343. Okay.

  1344. Having considered then

  1345. our two topics

  1346. of gender and marriage

  1347. and having stepped on

  1348. a number of landmines

  1349. along the way,

1350. there are a lot of questions,

  1351. aren't there?

  1352. And fundamentally,

  1353. the questions arise

1354. because what we've been talking about

  1355. up to this point

1356. is God's original good creation

1357. before the fall of humanity.

  1358. And what that means

1359. is that we have never experienced it

1360. the way God intended it

  1361. in its fullness

1362. because the fall of humanity,

  1363. our rebellion against God

  1364. as a human race,

1365. our therefore alienation from him,

  1366. and our sin impulse

1367. to go away from his plan

1368. has created all sorts of problems

  1369. whereby this created goodness

  1370. feels like a zephyr

1371. that we can barely grasp onto

  1372. maybe at moments.

1373. We live in a fallen world

  1374. where this original goodness

1375. has not been our experience

  1376. for many of us.

  1377. So what about questions?

  1378. What about gender dysphoria?

  1379. What about same-sex attraction?

  1380. And what about singleness?

  1381. There are more.

1382. Sorry, they didn't make the list.

  1383. We won't be here.

1384. If I wanted to keep going,

1385. we'll be here till one

1386. and we don't want to do that.

1387. So, but these are the three things.

1388. And again, I want to reemphasize,

  1389. these are questions

1390. that are not about they,

  1391. out there,

1392. those people who struggle with this.

  1393. But this is something

1394. that is a we question,

1395. that we as human beings

  1396. will struggle with.

1397. And there will be people

1398. sitting next to you in the pew

  1399. who may be struggling

  1400. with these questions.

  1401. So, first of all,

  1402. what about gender dysphoria?

  1403. For those of you

1404. who are unfamiliar with this term,

1405. it can be defined as this,

  1406. a marked incongruence

  1407. between one's experienced

  1408. or expressed gender

  1409. and their assigned gender,

  1410. that is their gender

1411. of a child at birth

  1412. that's determined

  1413. by their biological parts,

  1414. their assigned gender

1415. of at least six months duration.

  1416. That's the official definition

  1417. of gender dysphoria.

  1418. Someone who feels like

1419. the body that they have

  1420. doesn't match the gender

  1421. that they feel.

1422. That might be the more,

1423. the simpler way to say it.

  1424. That there's a dissonance

  1425. or a disconnect

  1426. between those things.

1427. How do we think about this?

1428. Again, there's much to be said.

1429. I'm going to give you

  1430. a really brief framework.

  1431. Here's the thing.

1432. The way we want to view

  1433. these questions

  1434. is through the framework

  1435. of the biblical storyline

  1436. of creation, fall,

  1437. redemption, and glory.

  1438. So we've talked about

1439. the created goodness of gender.

  1440. Now we're talking about

  1441. someone who's experiencing

  1442. a fallen disconnect

  1443. or dissonance

  1444. where the gender

  1445. of their body,

  1446. their biological sex,

  1447. doesn't match

  1448. their psyche

  1449. and their soul

  1450. and their self-perception.

1451. What do we do with that?

1452. Sam Smith said in his post

  1453. that he was tired

  1454. of being at war

  1455. with his gender.

1456. Isn't that an interesting phrase

  1457. to describe his experience?

  1458. And we must understand

  1459. that this is real

  1460. because the fall

  1461. affects us holistically.

1462. It affects every part of us.

  1463. For some,

1464. this will be a biologically

  1465. sourced reality

  1466. that something

  1467. in their brain chemistry,

  1468. something in their hormones,

  1469. something is where

  1470. it just doesn't fit.

  1471. For some,

  1472. it may be caused

  1473. by trauma,

  1474. by broken relationships,

  1475. by cultural stereotypes

  1476. that have felt oppressive

  1477. to them,

  1478. where this fit

  1479. of their internal being

  1480. and their biological body

  1481. just does not work.

1482. And it is a deep

  1483. and difficult challenge.

1484. And we need to start

  1485. by being compassionate

  1486. to them.

  1487. Think about

1488. what it would be like

1489. if when people look at you,

  1490. they see something

  1491. and you feel like

  1492. that's not me.

  1493. What they see

1494. is not who they feel

  1495. like they are.

  1496. How terrible

  1497. is that?

  1498. How difficult

  1499. is that?

  1500. How heartbreaking

  1501. is that?

1502. So we need to recognize

1503. that this is a reality

  1504. for some.

1505. So how do we respond?

1506. How do we walk through this?

  1507. First of all,

1508. we need to go back

  1509. to the question

  1510. of God's givenness.

  1511. What has God

  1512. made us to be?

  1513. And then we also

  1514. need to say,

1515. how is it that the fall

  1516. has warped

  1517. or shaped

  1518. or affected

  1519. my experience

  1520. of what might have

  1521. been a good thing?

  1522. Because we all experience

  1523. a little bit

1524. of both of that, right?

  1525. There's still vestiges

  1526. of our created goodness

  1527. and then there's also

  1528. these places

  1529. where it's warped

  1530. and twisted

1531. or where it's no longer

1532. what it's supposed to be

  1533. and this dissonance

  1534. that we feel,

1535. we think this should not be

  1536. and that's right.

  1537. It should not be.

1538. This is not the way

1539. it was meant to be.

  1540. So the church

  1541. needs to start

  1542. first with compassion

  1543. to seek to understand

1544. rather than to fix people.

  1545. Secondly,

  1546. we need to start,

  1547. we need to affirm

  1548. the reality

  1549. of their experience

  1550. but then to help

  1551. bring to them

  1552. a biblical framework

  1553. of thinking through

  1554. how to interpret

  1555. their experience

  1556. through this creation

  1557. fall redemption pattern

  1558. so that they might

  1559. think about

  1560. what it is actually

  1561. that they're experiencing.

  1562. And third,

  1563. we need to recognize

1564. that we need to love them

  1565. as fellow broken

  1566. human beings

  1567. who most of all

  1568. need the gospel,

  1569. who need Jesus Christ,

  1570. who need to find

  1571. an identity

  1572. deeper than their gender,

  1573. deeper than their bodies,

  1574. deeper than their things

  1575. in being in Christ

  1576. because this is what

1577. they were made to be.

  1578. And that then

  1579. as that is established,

  1580. then they can begin

  1581. to think through

  1582. how then they respond

  1583. to this experience

  1584. that they have.

  1585. Friends,

  1586. there is a desire

  1587. and a plan

  1588. on God's part

  1589. that this dissonance

  1590. of gender dysphoria

  1591. will be restored.

1592. But it may not be

  1593. in this life.

  1594. Some of us

  1595. will walk through this

  1596. and carry this dissonance

  1597. for the rest

  1598. of their lives.

  1599. But we do know

  1600. that one day

  1601. God will restore it.

  1602. We do know

  1603. that one day

  1604. in heaven

  1605. we will know

  1606. the gendered being

  1607. that we were created

  1608. to be apart

  1609. from the fall.

  1610. And in heaven

  1611. that dissonance

  1612. will be gone.

  1613. And just as there's

  1614. no more tears,

  1615. no more sorrow,

  1616. no more death,

  1617. so there will be

1618. no more of this dissonance

  1619. and we will know

  1620. who we are

  1621. and we will be

  1622. fully known

  1623. by God

  1624. and loved

  1625. and celebrated.

  1626. There's lots more

  1627. to say about this.

  1628. There's a great book.

  1629. It's a starting place

  1630. for you

  1631. by Vaughn Roberts

  1632. called Transgender.

  1633. I recommend it.

1634. It was on the bookstore

  1635. earlier this week

  1636. but it's sold out

  1637. right now.

  1638. So we'll get more.

  1639. So,

  1640. alright.

  1641. I'm already over time.

  1642. I gotta keep going.

  1643. Second,

  1644. what about

  1645. same-sex attraction

  1646. and marriage?

  1647. again,

  1648. think through this framework

  1649. of creation,

  1650. fall,

  1651. redemption,

  1652. right?

  1653. If we

  1654. were in Adam's shoes,

  1655. we would not experience

  1656. same-sex attraction.

  1657. God created

  1658. a goodness

  1659. of gender

  1660. and distinction

  1661. and attraction

  1662. that

  1663. was the original pattern.

  1664. and yet,

  1665. in our fallen world,

  1666. we recognize

  1667. that this is true

  1668. for some people,

  1669. for some of us.

  1670. We find that

  1671. our romantic

  1672. and sexual desire

  1673. does not gravitate

  1674. towards those

  1675. of the opposite gender

1676. but of the same gender.

  1677. And some of this

  1678. may be biological

  1679. and some of it

  1680. may be environmental

  1681. and some of it

  1682. may be willful.

1683. But we need to recognize

  1684. that

  1685. this is a reality

  1686. for many people.

  1687. And the challenge

  1688. of talking about

  1689. this in our culture

  1690. today

  1691. is that our culture

  1692. has so elevated

  1693. sex

  1694. in our culture

  1695. and made it

  1696. our primary identity

  1697. and a fundamental

  1698. human right.

  1699. Therefore,

1700. we ought to be able

  1701. to have sex

  1702. with people

  1703. whenever we want to

1704. and who we choose to

  1705. apart from any constraint

  1706. or any pattern

  1707. of God's plan

  1708. because that has been

  1709. a broader

  1710. cultural value

  1711. than when we talk

  1712. about this question

  1713. to talk about

  1714. any sort of limitation

  1715. or any constraint

1716. on how we live this out

  1717. feels like it's oppression.

  1718. We need to recognize

  1719. that this is not

  1720. how God intended it

  1721. in the beginning.

  1722. And to submit

  1723. to his givenness

  1724. means that

  1725. there may be

  1726. some of us

  1727. people

  1728. who will never

  1729. experience

  1730. sexual union

  1731. with another human being

  1732. in this life

  1733. because they want

  1734. to live

  1735. within the constraints

  1736. of what God

  1737. has called them to.

  1738. And it might be

  1739. because of their

  1740. same-sex attraction

  1741. and their understanding

  1742. that this is not

  1743. God's plan for marriage

  1744. that they will live

  1745. a life of faithful

  1746. celibacy

  1747. until eternity.

  1748. Or it may be

  1749. that they will

1750. and it may be too

  1751. that some of you

  1752. may be single

  1753. and have heterosexual

  1754. desires

  1755. and still live

  1756. in this calling

  1757. of being faithful

  1758. and abstinent

  1759. for your whole life.

  1760. There is no

  1761. plan

  1762. for same-sex marriage

  1763. in God's kingdom

  1764. and purposes.

  1765. God's plan

  1766. is for sexual

  1767. abstinence

  1768. outside of marriage

  1769. regardless of gender.

  1770. Now,

  1771. let me

  1772. one minute on this.

  1773. There can be

  1774. a whole other conversation

  1775. about how we engage

  1776. with our society

  1777. or our government

  1778. in how we think

  1779. about these things.

  1780. That is a separate

  1781. conversation

  1782. because I think

  1783. there's

  1784. and I think

  1785. that there's

  1786. an appropriate

  1787. diversity of views

  1788. even within the church

  1789. on how to navigate

  1790. that question.

  1791. What I have been

  1792. presenting to you

  1793. is this is

  1794. what God's word

  1795. says for God's people

  1796. and then we want

  1797. to think about

  1798. how does that apply

  1799. to the broader culture

1800. and we need to do so

  1801. with a lot more

  1802. compassion

  1803. and a lot less

  1804. virulence

  1805. than we have

  1806. tended to do so.

  1807. So what about

  1808. our friends

  1809. who struggle

  1810. with these things?

  1811. Well,

  1812. if they don't know

  1813. Christ

  1814. then we love them

  1815. as fallen

  1816. and broken people

  1817. who are lost

  1818. and need Jesus.

  1819. We don't need

  1820. to fix

  1821. their

  1822. sexual orientation.

  1823. we don't need

  1824. to fix

  1825. their relationships

  1826. first.

  1827. We need to help

  1828. them see

  1829. that the life

  1830. and death

  1831. and resurrection

  1832. of Jesus

  1833. is their greatest

  1834. hope.

  1835. What about those

  1836. who do know Christ

  1837. who struggle

  1838. with these things?

  1839. Well, you know

1840. what we need to do

  1841. with them?

  1842. We need to love

  1843. them as sinners

  1844. who experience

  1845. life as fallen

  1846. and broken

  1847. in the world

  1848. and who need

  1849. to be pointed

  1850. to their greatest

  1851. hope

  1852. which is

  1853. the forgiveness

  1854. of sins

  1855. and the new life

  1856. that they have

  1857. in Christ

  1858. that they might

  1859. grow in God's

  1860. grace

  1861. to live out

  1862. the life

  1863. that God

  1864. has called them

  1865. of faithfulness

  1866. to his plan

  1867. to engage

  1868. in his redemptive

  1869. purposes

  1870. in their lives

  1871. to be transformed

  1872. more and more

  1873. into the likeness

  1874. of God.

  1875. All right.

  1876. Washed and Waiting

  1877. by Wesley Hill

  1878. is a book

  1879. downstairs.

  1880. Be a great

  1881. book for you

  1882. to consider

  1883. in light of this.

  1884. The third one

  1885. and this flows

1886. from what I just said

  1887. what about singleness?

  1888. Marriage is a central

  1889. motif

  1890. in the biblical

  1891. story

  1892. and in the creation

  1893. story

  1894. and we need

  1895. to recognize

  1896. that singleness

  1897. is a little bit

  1898. different from

  1899. these other things

  1900. because singleness

  1901. is not a result

  1902. of the fall.

  1903. Right?

  1904. Singleness

  1905. is a reality

  1906. in human existence

  1907. but it is not

  1908. per se

  1909. a result

  1910. of the fall

  1911. in the same way

  1912. that gender

  1913. confusion

  1914. or

  1915. same-sex

  1916. attraction

  1917. is.

  1918. What we need

  1919. to do

  1920. is to say

  1921. briefly

  1922. these things.

  1923. One,

  1924. marriage is a

  1925. dominant paradigm

  1926. that ought to be

  1927. celebrated

  1928. as essential

  1929. to the human

  1930. race

  1931. and to our

  1932. calling to live

  1933. it out.

  1934. However,

  1935. it is not

  1936. the purpose

  1937. for all of

  1938. God's people.

  1939. It is not

  1940. essential

  1941. and it is not

  1942. a second-hand

  1943. state.

  1944. Goodness gracious,

1945. all we need to do

  1946. is to look at

  1947. Jesus Christ,

  1948. the God-man

  1949. who lived

  1950. a single life

  1951. and was not

  1952. sexually active

  1953. and was fully

  1954. displaying the glory

  1955. of God

1956. in all that he did.

1957. Not only do we see

  1958. that,

  1959. but we see

  1960. that he

  1961. commends

  1962. those who

  1963. choose singleness,

  1964. who become

  1965. eunuchs

  1966. for the sake

  1967. of the kingdom

  1968. of God,

  1969. who choose

  1970. singleness

  1971. for their

  1972. lifetime.

  1973. The apostle

  1974. Paul

  1975. in 1 Corinthians

  1976. 7 seems to

  1977. say singleness

  1978. has a preference

  1979. because of the

  1980. single-mindedness

  1981. where you can

  1982. serve your life.

  1983. I was single

  1984. until I was 37.

  1985. I know the joy

  1986. of that focus.

  1987. I have also

  1988. experienced the joy

  1989. of living in a

  1990. family where now

  1991. I have a wife

  1992. and children

  1993. to take care of

  1994. and the joy

  1995. of taking care

  1996. of them

  1997. and there is

  1998. not a value

  1999. laid on one

  2000. of these

  2001. or the other

  2002. as greater.

  2003. They are both

  2004. good.

  2005. And in Luke

  2006. 20 as the

  2007. Pharisees

  2008. sought to trap

  2009. Jesus in a

  2010. question about

  2011. leverant marriage

  2012. and how they

  2013. might,

  2014. what happens

  2015. in eternity,

  2016. Jesus says

  2017. this,

  2018. in heaven

  2019. there will be

  2020. neither marriage

  2021. nor the giving

  2022. in marriage.

  2023. you see

  2024. in God's

  2025. kingdom

  2026. in the end

  2027. of days

  2028. the kingdom

  2029. of God

  2030. is a community

  2031. of his children

  2032. and marriage

  2033. is a good

  2034. that we are

  2035. to celebrate

  2036. but we are

  2037. meant to be

  2038. a community

  2039. that is robust

  2040. enough for us

  2041. to find

  2042. companionship

  2043. and fellowship

  2044. and partnership

  2045. in the gospel

  2046. call that he

  2047. has placed

  2048. on us

  2049. as his people

  2050. as his church

  2051. and therefore

  2052. we should be

  2053. finding friendship

  2054. and we should

  2055. be finding

  2056. the church

  2057. to be a family

  2058. and we should

  2059. be finding

  2060. our identity

  2061. in Christ

  2062. to allow us

  2063. to joyfully

  2064. and patiently

  2065. and with

  2066. perseverance

  2067. live out God's

  2068. calling

  2069. for us

  2070. to be his

  2071. ambassadors

  2072. to be his

  2073. children

  2074. to be his

  2075. servants in the

  2076. world

  2077. together.

  2078. together.

  2079. This is a

  2080. goodness

  2081. that we ought

  2082. to celebrate

  2083. and recognize.

  2084. We don't need

  2085. to pit singleness

  2086. and marriage

  2087. against one

  2088. another

  2089. and sometimes

  2090. a church

  2091. feels like

  2092. it only

  2093. talks about

  2094. marriage

  2095. and we live

  2096. in a world

  2097. where sometimes

  2098. we talk about

  2099. how terrible

  2100. marriage is

  2101. in.

  2102. We need

  2103. to bring

  2104. these things

  2105. into alignment

  2106. to what God

  2107. says which

  2108. is they are

  2109. both good

  2110. and they both

  2111. have their

  2112. place.

  2113. But this

  2114. brings me

  2115. then to my

  2116. final word

  2117. and I promise

  2118. we're almost

  2119. done here.

  2120. Why did God

  2121. create us

  2122. as gendered

  2123. beings with

  2124. marriage as a

  2125. central identity?

  2126. He did so

  2127. because in

  2128. these very

  2129. things we

  2130. display God

  2131. in the world.

  2132. In gender

  2133. we see

  2134. distinction

  2135. and equality

  2136. and complementarity

  2137. which points

  2138. to God

  2139. himself.

  2140. God who

  2141. in his

  2142. Godhead

  2143. is one

  2144. God in

  2145. three persons

  2146. of the same

  2147. essence but

  2148. differentiated in

  2149. person and

  2150. role.

  2151. And so

  2152. the son

  2153. proceeds from

  2154. the father

  2155. and the spirit

  2156. from the father

  2157. and the son

  2158. and there is

  2159. this ordering

  2160. and yet this

  2161. complementarity

  2162. and this unity

  2163. and part of the

  2164. reason why God

  2165. has created

  2166. gender is so

  2167. that we might

  2168. in some way

  2169. picture the

  2170. very nature

  2171. of our

  2172. triune God.

  2173. And if that's

  2174. the picture of

  2175. gender then

  2176. marriage then

  2177. throughout the

  2178. Bible becomes

  2179. this metaphor

  2180. this picture

  2181. of God's

  2182. relationship

  2183. with his

  2184. people.

  2185. And we

  2186. see this

  2187. in Isaiah

  2188. and we

  2189. see it

  2190. in Hosea

  2191. and we

  2192. see it

  2193. most fully

  2194. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  2195. chapter 5

  2196. where it's

  2197. laid out that

  2198. this is about

  2199. Christ and

  2200. the church

  2201. that our

  2202. marriages

  2203. picture

  2204. the relationship

  2205. between Christ

  2206. and the church

  2207. and finally

  2208. in Revelation

  2209. 19 we see

  2210. that all of

  2211. this is going

  2212. towards a time

  2213. where we as

  2214. God's people

  2215. will be invited

  2216. to the marriage

  2217. supper of the

  2218. Lamb and we

  2219. will rejoice

  2220. and be glad

  2221. because God

  2222. has set his

  2223. love on us

  2224. like a bridegroom

  2225. sets his love

  2226. on his bride

  2227. to welcome him

  2228. and to celebrate

  2229. him and to

  2230. join with him

  2231. in an intimacy

  2232. we can't even

  2233. imagine and a

  2234. companionship that

  2235. will be beyond

  2236. our greatest

  2237. hopes and

  2238. desires.

  2239. This is what

  2240. God has created

  2241. when he created

  2242. gender and

  2243. marriage and

  2244. that's why

  2245. it's important

  2246. and that's

  2247. why it's worth

  2248. us thinking

  2249. carefully about

  2250. what it is.

  2251. The beauty of

  2252. the gospel

  2253. pictured in

  2254. gender and

  2255. marriage a

  2256. deeper union

  2257. a greater

  2258. intimacy a

  2259. fuller joy

  2260. and a

  2261. completeness as

  2262. we are joined

  2263. with Jesus

  2264. we will be

  2265. fully and

  2266. finally all

  2267. that God

  2268. will have us

  2269. to be.

  2270. Let's pray.

  2271. Lord we are

  2272. thankful to you

  2273. for your word

  2274. and we ask

  2275. that you would

  2276. Lord help us

  2277. to continue to

  2278. wrestle with

  2279. these things

  2280. Lord to

  2281. submit to

  2282. your word

  2283. and to

  2284. seek to

  2285. understand it

  2286. more fully.

  2287. Lord I pray

  2288. for those who

  2289. wrestle and

  2290. struggle Lord

  2291. with the way

  2292. that the fall

  2293. has affected

  2294. us.

  2295. Lord I pray

  2296. that we might

  2297. take these

  2298. things to the

  2299. cross and

  2300. take them to

  2301. one another

  2302. that we might

  2303. support and

  2304. encourage one

  2305. another in it.

  2306. God make us a

  2307. church that

  2308. displays your

  2309. glory in these

  2310. ways we pray in

  2311. Jesus name.

  2312. Amen.

  2313. Amen.

  2314. Amen.

  2315. Amen.

  2316. Amen.

  2317. Amen.

  2318. Amen.

  2319. Amen.

  2320. Amen.

  2321. Amen.
