  1. So, there are handouts. If you didn't get a handout, raise your hand and Ben's coming around with them.

  2. So we are several weeks into our class on gender and sexuality, looking at God's purpose for making us in his image as male and female

  3. and how we're to relate to one another and how to glorify Christ.

  4. So, this morning we were looking at the theme of hospitality and holiness.

  5. That's what I want to entitle this morning's lesson, or Christian witness to the LGBT community.

  6. That is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and you could add more letters to that as well.

  7. So, just a couple of schedule notes. So the next two weeks, we are sort of taking a break from this class.

  8. Next week, it says prayer. Jeff Stevens is actually going to teach next week.

  9. And if he was here, he could tell you what he's teaching on.

  10. But he's not here yet. So, he may teach on marriage or he may do something on prayer.

  11. And I just asked him a couple days ago, so it's not his fault.

  12. But he will be leading you next week.

  13. And then there's a missionary who's been part of our church this fall who's staying at the Overseas Ministry Study Center

  14. named Dr. Adam Shaba from Nigeria.

  15. And he is a pastor from Nigeria.

  16. And he is going to share some of what he has been...

  17. He's going to share with us on the 24th.

  18. So, I've got to talk with him.

  19. He is... I'm trying to think. He's working on two projects, and I won't be able to remember what they are.

  20. One of them is, I think, something like how Christians should respond when they're persecuted.

  21. And then another... Because a lot of... He works with pastors and churches, some of whom have been violently attacked.

  22. And so, how do Christians respond?

  23. You know, how do... You know, do you run away?

  24. Do you take up arms and fight?

  25. Do you just sort of stand there?

  26. You know, what does it look like, you know, when it's really intense?

  27. You know, that's... And how do we face opposition more broadly?

  28. So, he might speak on that or just other things that the Lord has been teaching him.

  29. And then December, we'll come back to this class and continue.

  30. We're going to do one week on pornography, one week on sexual abuse,

  31. and then finally, we'll look at our heavenly hope, the hope of glory, right?

  32. So, we're in the middle of this fallen world.

  33. We're dealing with these challenging issues, but we want to keep our eyes on the promise that God has for us.

  34. And so, that's where we're going to end.

  35. So, so far in this class, we've looked at God's design for our bodies

  36. and how we're beautiful, created by God, and broken because we're corrupted by sin.

  37. How in Christ we're called into redemption and he has begun his work of redemption in us.

  38. We looked at how marriage and singleness, when we live those out in a Christ-centered way,

  39. can both point towards Christ's redemption.

  40. And last two weeks, we looked at homosexuality and we looked at transgender identity

  41. in light of the Christian story.

  42. But today, so far, we've been sort of looking at everything in light of the Christian story.

  43. Right? In light of the gospel, in light of the biblical narrative.

  44. But today, I want to ask the question, how do we relate to people who haven't yet bought into the Christian story?

  45. Right? How do we relate to people who are outside the church with wisdom and love?

  46. And the Bible has a lot to say to us about that.

  47. I think if we start by looking at the ministry of Jesus,

  48. we can look at how did Jesus relate to people in the world who were not yet his disciples?

  49. Now, there are several examples you could point to.

  50. But three groups of people that Jesus relates to.

  51. So one, in the beginning of Mark, tells a story about Jesus encountering a leper.

  52. And a leper would have been outside, sort of an outsider,

  53. someone who was literally forced to remain separate from the community

  54. because they were worried that his disease would spread to others.

  55. And so he would actually have to call out, unclean, unclean.

  56. And so there's a lot of shame associated with being a leper.

  57. And we see a story where Jesus touched the leper and then healed him.

  58. We also see another group of people who we see Jesus relating to are tax collectors.

  59. Now, tax collectors were notorious cheaters.

  60. Right?

  61. So pretty much you could assume that someone who was a tax collector was actively engaged in sin.

  62. Deception, greed, etc.

  63. How does Jesus relate to tax collectors?

  64. Well, we see Jesus calling Levi and Matthew,

  65. whether those two were the same person or two different people,

  66. but calling them to be his disciples,

  67. and they left behind their former way of life and followed him.

  68. But we also see an interesting situation where Jesus calls Levi to be his disciple.

  69. And then he goes to Levi's house,

  70. and it says many tax collectors were there at Levi's house eating and drinking with Jesus.

  71. And a lot of people looked at Jesus and said,

  72. Jesus, why are you eating and drinking with those people?

  73. Why are you going to the house of people who are obviously actively engaged in sinful and destructive behavior,

  74. cheating our own community, bringing dishonor upon us?

  75. You know, why would you be associating with them?

  76. And Jesus says, it's not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

  77. I haven't come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  78. Another group of people who we see Jesus interacting with who are not yet his disciples would be,

  79. so in John chapter 8, beginning of John chapter 8,

John 8 chapter mention John 8 chapter mention

  80. there's a story about Jesus encountering a woman caught in adultery.

  81. Now, there's a little, you know, this story may or may not have been exactly where it currently is in the Gospel of John.

  82. It's sort of one of two passages in the New Testament that might,

  83. we're not totally sure if it was right where it is now.

  84. But another story in Luke, similar story,

  85. there's a prostitute who comes and anoints Jesus' feet,

  86. or it says, a sinful woman of the city,

  87. which you can sort of read between the lines.

  88. Again, someone who was sort of would have been seen as notorious.

  89. And she was attracted to Jesus.

  90. And so, how does Jesus respond to,

  91. well, in John, with the adulterous woman,

  92. he says,

  93. neither, he says,

  94. let the one who's without sin throw the first stone.

  95. Right?

  96. Because some people, they bring her to him and they want to stone her.

  97. And so, and then all the other people go away

  98. and Jesus is left standing there.

  99. And he says, neither do I condemn you.

  100. Go now and sin no more.

  101. So isn't that so interesting, right?

  102. In all these episodes,

  103. and we could look at others as well,

  104. we see that Jesus is hospitable.

  105. He's remarkably generous towards outsiders.

  106. People even are attracted to him

  107. who are not attracted to other religious leaders

  108. who normally keep their distance

  109. from the Pharisees and other,

  110. and Sadducees and other sort of well-known religious leaders.

  111. Jesus attracts them to himself.

  112. He eats with them.

  113. He meets them on their own turf,

  114. even though it damaged his reputation to do so.

  115. But Jesus also calls those who follow him

  116. to a life of holiness.

  117. That is to being set apart for God and his purposes.

  118. Right?

  119. So Jesus doesn't,

  120. he calls those who follow him

  121. to a life of uncompromising devotion,

  122. even saying,

  123. take up your cross and follow me.

  124. Right?

  125. So Jesus calls his disciples to forsake our sin

  126. and to follow him.

  127. And I think what you see in Jesus's ministry

  128. is that his generous hospitality

  129. both precedes and promotes holiness.

  130. So what I mean there is,

  131. Jesus doesn't wait until everyone's completely forsaken their sin

  132. in order to be generous and kind and open-hearted to them,

  133. but he's also not generous and kind and open-hearted

  134. in a way that encourages them to remain

  135. in the same sinful or self-destructive patterns.

  136. So there's that balance there.

  137. Right?

  138. Jesus is generous and open-hearted to people.

  139. He meets them right where they are,

  140. but in his grace,

  141. he doesn't let them just stay right where they are.

  142. Isn't that true?

  143. Isn't that how God meets us?

  144. So I think this gives us a model

  145. of how do we relate to people

  146. who are not yet followers of Jesus?

  147. Jesus.

  148. And in fact, in the epistles,

  149. we see the same commands to us.

  150. Romans 12,

  151. seek to show hospitality.

  152. Be generous and open-hearted.

  153. And that's true,

  154. not even just for fellow Christians,

  155. but the verses go on to talk about

  156. don't repay anyone evil for evil.

  157. If your enemy is hungry,

  158. feed him.

  159. If he's thirsty,

  160. give him something to drink.

  161. Right?

  162. That's what hospitality involved in the ancient world

  163. is inviting someone in your home

  164. and giving them a meal.

  165. And Jesus says,

  166. even to someone who is opposing you,

  167. right?

  168. Extend that kind of generous welcome.

  169. And another verse that I think goes along with this

  170. is when Paul in 2 Corinthians says,

  171. we regard no one according to the flesh.

  172. Now, what does that mean?

  173. Basically, what Paul is saying here is

  174. we don't just see people

  175. in sort of worldly categories.

  176. We don't just see people

  177. in the way that this world defines them

  178. or even just in the way they might define themselves.

  179. We see people in the way that God defines us

  180. as people who are made in God's image,

  181. every single human being.

  182. And as every single human being

  183. is broken and corrupted by sin.

  184. Right?

  185. And we're all in that same boat.

  186. That's where it sort of starts.

  187. So we see people,

  188. we, and that's something we can pray.

  189. Lord, help me to see other people

  190. as you see them

  191. or in light of how you see them.

  192. But second, holiness, right?

  193. The same chapter, Romans 12 says,

  194. abhor what is evil,

  195. stay away from what is evil

  196. and hold fast to what is good.

  197. So Christians should have clear

  198. and distinct moral standards,

  199. embracing what's true and right

  200. and good and beautiful

  201. and resisting what is deceptive

  202. and distorted and dishonoring to God.

  203. And I think standing for holiness

  204. starts with seeking holiness ourselves.

  205. Right?

  206. So in other words,

  207. sort of let's clean our own house first.

  208. Right?

  209. So I used this analogy

  210. in a sermon about a year ago

  211. where I talked about poison ivy

  212. that had infiltrated our yard

  213. and it was mostly coming

  214. from our neighbor's yard.

  215. But you know what?

  216. If I just got really mad at the neighbor

  217. and, you know,

  218. because I needed to start

  219. by cleaning it out of our yard.

  220. Right?

  221. So that I wouldn't get it again.

  222. Because it was awful.

  223. Right?

  224. You know,

  225. so we need to start seeking holiness

  226. by taking up our own cross

  227. and following Christ.

  228. And that's the only way

  229. that we can sort of be

  230. a credible witness to others

  231. to challenge others

  232. to also do the same.

  233. So practically,

  234. what does this look like

  235. in relation to the LGBT communities?

  236. Now I'm using this phrase

  237. LGBT community

  238. not because everyone

  239. who is gay or lesbian

  240. or bisexual

  241. or transgender

  242. or queer

  243. or intersex

  244. or asexual

  245. or however they might

  246. define themselves

  247. is part of one community

  248. because that's not really true.

  249. But just sort of

  250. people who identify that way.

  251. Right?

  252. And there's many,

  253. you know,

  254. people,

  255. so some terms.

  256. I've listed some definitions

  257. of terms

  258. just to understand

  259. how terms are commonly used.

  260. Right?

  261. And that's helpful.

  262. Right?

  263. Part of meeting somebody

  264. where they are

  265. is understanding

  266. how they see themselves

  267. or how they define themselves.

  268. And at least

  269. understanding it.

  270. Even if you might say,

  271. well,

  272. I don't know whether

  273. I would see that

  274. as the whole picture.

  275. But you know what?

  276. You've got to at least start

  277. by understanding people.

  278. And I think here

  279. it's good to ask questions.

  280. I mean,

  281. there are many terms out there.

  282. I think it's fine

  283. to ask questions like,

  284. how do you identify yourself?

  285. Can you tell me

  286. what that means to you?

  287. What has your experience

  288. been like?

  289. It's better to ask

  290. an honest question

  291. than to make

  292. a wrong assumption

  293. out of fear.

  294. Some terms are phrases

  295. that may provoke

  296. negative reaction

  297. from many people

  298. who identify

  299. as LGBT.

  300. So one would be

  301. calling someone

  302. a homosexual.

  303. People sort of

  304. hear that word

  305. and are like,

  306. but that's not

  307. how I define myself.

  308. That sounds sort of

  309. more like a clinical term.

  310. Or referring to

  311. a homosexual lifestyle.

  312. People might be like,

  313. well,

  314. what are you envisioning

  315. when you think of,

  316. when you use that phrase?

  317. Are you saying

  318. that everyone lives

  319. the same way

  320. in all these respects?

  321. If someone calls himself gay,

  322. they might not like it

  323. if you refer to

  324. their experience

  325. of having same-sex attractions.

  326. So same-sex attractions

  327. is a more common phrase

  328. within the Christian community,

  329. especially because

  330. many Christians

  331. use that phrase

  332. to basically say,

  333. this is what I'm experiencing,

  334. but this isn't

  335. at the deepest level

  336. who I am.

  337. But many people

  338. who have embraced

  339. a gay or lesbian identity,

  340. if you use that phrase

  341. same-sex attraction,

  342. they'll be like,

  343. but you're immediately

  344. trying to tell me

  345. that that's not who I am,

  346. and you're trying

  347. to tell me

  348. that I need to get rid

  349. of this part of me

  350. that I think

  351. is actually very fundamental

  352. to who I am.

  353. So it's sort of like,

  354. could be seen as like

  355. immediately provoking

  356. a conflict

  357. just by the phrase

  358. that you use.

  359. Right?

  360. So,

  361. so I think

  362. sometimes it's wise

  363. to sort of just

  364. avoid phrases

  365. that immediately,

  366. that might immediately

  367. cause offense

  368. in the process

  369. of building a relationship

  370. with someone

  371. and sort of

  372. representing Christ.

  373. Another thing

  374. I think

  375. can be helpful

  376. is to recognize

  377. that there are

  378. some similarities

  379. between

  380. the evangelical

  381. conservative

  382. Christian community

  383. and the LGBT community.

  384. You might think,

  385. really?

  386. Well,

  387. think,

  388. think about

  389. what is the experience

  390. like,

  391. right?

  392. Both groups

  393. feel like

  394. marginalized minorities

  395. in a hostile

  396. or indifferent world.

  397. Both groups

  398. find solidarity

  399. and strength

  400. in being together.

  401. Right?

  402. Why do we come together

  403. on Sundays?

  404. Because we want

  405. to find strength

  406. in our Christian,

  407. Christ-centered identity.

  408. Both have a message

  409. of freedom

  410. and liberation.

  411. Right?

  412. This idea,

  413. we used to be living

  414. in the darkness,

  415. in the closet,

  416. in shame,

  417. and now we're living

  418. in the truth,

  419. and we want to be

  420. accepted and loved

  421. for who we really are.

  422. Right?

  423. For Christians,

  424. we found that truth

  425. in the person of Christ.

  426. Right?

  427. That he loves us

  428. and he has given us

  429. our true identity.

  430. And,

  431. but in the LGBT community,

  432. there's a sense that

  433. having sort of found

  434. our sexual identity

  435. might be a part of,

  436. might be a similar

  437. experience.

  438. Both also want to be

  439. accepting and hospitable

  440. and outreaching communities

  441. in a sense.

  442. Wanting to

  443. bring more people

  444. into our community

  445. or to extend

  446. our community

  447. into the wider world.

  448. The other similarity

  449. is that each group

  450. sees the other

  451. as a potential

  452. and,

  453. or as a specific

  454. or at least

  455. a potential threat

  456. to its well-being.

  457. Right?

  458. So,

  459. most recently,

  460. Beto O'Rourke

  461. at one of the

  462. Democratic debates

  463. said that he thinks

  464. that churches

  465. that take a traditional

  466. position on marriage

  467. should have their

  468. 501c3 status revoked.

  469. Now,

  470. right?

  471. How does that feel

  472. as a Christian?

  473. Right?

  474. You know,

  475. first of all,

  476. you're like,

  477. really?

  478. Like,

  479. boy,

  480. that would like

  481. decimate a lot

  482. of charitable organizations.

  483. I don't think you realize

  484. what you're doing.

  485. I don't think you realize

  486. how many of the poor

  487. and other people

  488. that your party

  489. stands for,

  490. like,

  491. are being helped

  492. by these very organizations

  493. actively.

  494. You know?

  495. So,

  496. right?

  497. But,

  498. but even besides that,

  499. right,

  500. as a Christian,

  501. you sort of feel like,

  502. whoa,

  503. like,

  504. we feel like

  505. we're being attacked here.

  506. And,

  507. people,

  508. you know,

  509. people in the LGBT community

  510. feel like,

  511. you know,

  512. when there was a whole,

  513. you know,

  514. long debate about

  515. same-sex marriage

  516. and,

  517. you know,

  518. Proposition 8 in California

  519. and,

  520. you know,

  521. it's those

  522. evangelical Christian churches

  523. who are standing

  524. against our right

  525. to,

  526. and our freedom.

  527. Right?

  528. So,

  529. there's,

  530. there's this sense

  531. and vocal members

  532. of each group

  533. advocate for

  534. mutually opposing

  535. public policy stances.

  536. Right?

  537. Now,

  538. not everybody

  539. has the same politics

  540. in either group,

  541. but,

  542. still.

  543. The other thing

  544. I'll say is that

  545. Christians

  546. who experience

  547. same-sex attraction

  548. but who choose

  549. not to pursue

  550. a same-sex relationship

  551. because they prioritize

  552. their Christian identity

  553. and their,

  554. their biblical commitment

  555. over their sexual desires

  556. are sort of caught

  557. in the middle.

  558. So,

  559. they're generally

  560. not well understood

  561. or accepted

  562. within the wider

  563. gay community,

  564. but they're also

  565. not always well understood

  566. or supported

  567. in the church.

  568. And I think,

  569. one of the things

  570. I hope within this class

  571. is that

  572. we would be

  573. equipped

  574. and encouraged

  575. to

  576. stand with

  577. our brothers and sisters

  578. in Christ

  579. or walking this

  580. challenging

  581. and hard road.

  582. But how can

  583. Christians faithfully

  584. bear witness to Christ

  585. when relationships

  586. can easily become

  587. distant,

  588. polarized,

  589. and tense,

  590. right?

  591. When each group

  592. sort of sees each other

  593. as a potential threat.

  594. What should be

  595. the distinctive witness

  596. of Christians?

  597. Well,

  598. I don't think

  599. that Christians

  600. should abandon

  601. our traditional

  602. understanding

  603. of biblical marriage.

  604. You know,

  605. we've talked about

  606. that in past weeks.

  607. And,

  608. but I do think

  609. that if we're

  610. finding our identity

  611. and our security

  612. in Christ

  613. and not from ourselves,

  614. because that's really

  615. the difference,

  616. right?

  617. Where do Christians

  618. find our deepest identity

  619. outside of ourselves

  620. in Jesus Christ?

  621. Where does,

  622. you know,

  623. if someone

  624. who is

  625. identifying as LGBT

  626. and sort of

  627. claiming that

  628. as the,

  629. sort of,

  630. one of the deepest

  631. parts of who they are,

  632. well,

  633. it's in their own

  634. sexual desires

  635. and experience,

  636. right?

  637. So,

  638. that's sort of

  639. the main difference

  640. is where is the source

  641. of your identity

  642. coming from?

  643. And I think as Christians,

  644. because the source

  645. of our identity

  646. is coming from

  647. outside us,

  648. I think that we

  649. have some resources

  650. to engage

  651. in these kind of

  652. challenging relationships.

  653. So first,

  654. as forgiven sinners,

  655. I think we can be

  656. less defensive.

  657. We can be more able

  658. to admit

  659. our own flaws

  660. and our own weaknesses

  661. and our own sins.

  662. And we're not,

  663. right,

  664. as Christians,

  665. we are not out

  666. to prove that we are

  667. better than everybody

  668. else in the world.

  669. And if we are,

  670. then we've forgotten

  671. the gospel,

  672. which says,

  673. Christ died for our sins,

  674. right?

  675. And by the grace of God,

  676. we are what we are.

  677. Second,

  678. as recipients of God's

  679. common grace,

  680. now,

  681. common grace is just a word

  682. that means the blessings

  683. that God extends

  684. to all people,

  685. regardless of whether

  686. they believe in Him.

  687. So,

  688. life and being made

  689. in God's image

  690. and,

  691. you know,

  692. the sun and the rain

  693. and everything,

  694. we can affirm

  695. all that is good

  696. and a reflection

  697. of God's image

  698. in LGBT people.

  699. So,

  700. for example,

  701. there may be many

  702. admirable aspects

  703. of a gay couple's

  704. friendship,

  705. even though Christians

  706. cannot celebrate

  707. the sexual aspects

  708. of that relationship.

  709. Or,

  710. a lesbian couple

  711. may be admirable,

  712. excellent parents

  713. in many respects,

  714. even though Christians

  715. may be concerned

  716. that they've deliberately

  717. structured their family

  718. and chosen to exclude

  719. a male parental figure

  720. in how they've

  721. structured their family.

  722. Right?

  723. So,

  724. I think Christians

  725. have an internal,

  726. third thing,

  727. Christians have an

  728. internal motivation

  729. through our union

  730. with Christ

  731. to love people

  732. who are different

  733. than us,

  734. people who disagree

  735. with us,

  736. or even people

  737. who attack us.

  738. And that's not

  739. something

  740. that is inherent

  741. in the LGBT community

  742. or the world at large.

  743. Right?

  744. Just because you identify

  745. as gay or lesbian

  746. does not actually

  747. give you any resources

  748. to love somebody

  749. who disagrees with you

  750. or who understands

  751. your identity differently.

  752. But,

  753. identifying as a Christian

  754. should.

  755. Right?

  756. It should enable us

  757. to love people

  758. better,

  759. even people who

  760. deeply disagree with us

  761. or even might attack us.

  762. I'm not going to get into

  763. what kinds of public

  764. policies Christians

  765. should advocate for.

  766. I will recommend

  767. a book called,

  768. by John Inaz,

  769. who called

  770. Confident Pluralism,

  771. which sort of talks

  772. about how Christians

  773. can engage widely.

  774. It's written not just

  775. to Christians,

  776. but he's a Christian

  777. law professor.

  778. And there's a copy

  779. on the bookstall.

  780. But it's a very thoughtful book.

  781. It gets into some details

  782. of legal cases

  783. and things like that.

  784. And he's sort of trying

  785. to say,

  786. how do we live together

  787. in a society

  788. where people have

  789. very different views

  790. and opinions?

  791. Is there a way

  792. that we can pursue

  793. the common good together?

  794. So I think that's

  795. a thoughtful book

  796. and a good resource

  797. in that direction.

  798. But next steps

  799. for the church

  800. in reaching out

  801. to people

  802. who identify

  803. as LGBT.

  804. Extend hospitality.

  805. Take initiative

  806. to befriend

  807. and listen to

  808. and learn

  809. from people.

  810. Repent of double standards.

  811. Believe that all

  812. sexual sin

  813. is destructive.

  814. Let's clean

  815. our own houses first.

  816. Third,

  817. acceptance is not

  818. the same as affirmation

  819. or approval.

  820. Now just think about

  821. how you express this

  822. in other relationships.

  823. Right?

  824. There's many other

  825. relationships that

  826. we all find ourselves in

  827. where there's some

  828. aspect of how

  829. people are living

  830. or their habits

  831. or the way

  832. they conduct themselves

  833. at work

  834. that you're like,

  835. I really don't approve.

  836. I can't go along

  837. with that.

  838. I really have concerns

  839. about that.

  840. I think that's

  841. certainly wouldn't

  842. be acceptable

  843. for me as a Christian

  844. to engage in.

  845. But you have to relate

  846. to that person

  847. and respect them.

  848. Right?

  849. So just think about

  850. how you do that

  851. in other relationships.

  852. Sometimes I think

  853. this feels very tense.

  854. Right?

  855. How do we

  856. like accept somebody

  857. but without affirming them?

  858. Well,

  859. I mean,

  860. do you have any friends

  861. who are heterosexuals

  862. who are cohabiting

  863. and they're not married

  864. and they're not Christian?

  865. Well,

  866. how do you relate to them?

  867. Right?

  868. I mean,

  869. that's a close analogy.

  870. Right?

  871. There's plenty

  872. of other analogies.

  873. Four,

  874. I'd say invest

  875. for the long haul

  876. not just for the short term.

  877. More specific questions.

  878. Let me jump

  879. into more specific questions,

  880. try to run through these

  881. a little quickly

  882. and then open it up.

  883. I want to make sure

  884. to leave some time

  885. for questions

  886. that you have.

  887. How should I respond

  888. if somebody comes out

  889. to me as gay

  890. or lesbian

  891. or et cetera?

  892. First,

  893. thank them

  894. for trusting you

  895. enough to share

  896. that with you

  897. because if they know

  898. you're a Christian,

  899. they probably have

  900. some fear

  901. that you would reject them

  902. or have an immediate

  903. sort of negative response

  904. like,

  905. I don't want to deal

  906. with you anymore

  907. or something like,

  908. or distancing yourself.

  909. So,

  910. thank them

  911. for trusting you enough.

  912. Reassure them

  913. that you're committed

  914. to your friendship

  915. or whatever your relationship

  916. is with them,

  917. you know,

  918. that you won't reject them

  919. as a person.

  920. My brother came out

  921. to me several years ago

  922. and I said,

  923. I just want you to know,

  924. like,

  925. you're always going

  926. to be my brother

  927. and I,

  928. you know,

  929. I love you

  930. and I want you

  931. to know that.

  932. And that was part

  933. of our conversation.

  934. Third,

  935. listen to them.

  936. Ask honest questions,

  937. right?

  938. Tell me more about

  939. what it's been like

  940. for you.

  941. Who have you told?

  942. How have people responded?

  943. Are you in a relationship?

  944. Right?

  945. These are helpful questions.

  946. Third,

  947. pray for them.

  948. Or fourth,

  949. pray for them.

  950. Pray that God

  951. would reveal his goodness

  952. to them.

  953. Pray that your faith,

  954. friendship would be

  955. a faithful expression

  956. of that goodness.

  957. Now,

  958. another question

  959. that comes up

  960. is,

  961. should I tell my friend,

  962. my gay friend,

  963. for example,

  964. or my gay brother,

  965. that I don't support

  966. gay marriage?

  967. So,

  968. I did not initiate

  969. that conversation

  970. when my brother

  971. came out to me,

  972. but he asked me

  973. very directly,

  974. so that gave us

  975. a good opportunity

  976. to talk.

  977. So,

  978. the short answer

  979. is it depends.

  980. Okay?

  981. So,

  982. consider at least

  983. the following factors,

  984. right?

  985. Does your friend

  986. claim to follow Christ

  987. and accept

  988. the authority

  989. of the Bible?

  990. Okay?

  991. Have you had

  992. conversations

  993. about the gospel,

  994. like the big picture

  995. of the Bible,

  996. anything else

  997. about God?

  998. Do you have

  999. a friendship

  1000. that generally

  1001. allows for disagreement

  1002. and mutual challenge

  1003. on a personal level?

  1004. Or not?

  1005. And,

  1006. is your friend

  1007. asking for your opinion

  1008. on this particular question?

  1009. So,

  1010. if the answer

  1011. to all those questions

  1012. is yes,

  1013. then yes.

1014. You need to be clear

  1015. about where you stand.

  1016. If the answer

  1017. to all those questions

  1018. is no,

  1019. probably no,

  1020. you don't need

  1021. to initiate

  1022. that conversation.

  1023. If the answer

  1024. is somewhat yes

  1025. and somewhat no,

  1026. then that's,

  1027. right,

  1028. the discerning

  1029. place in the middle.

  1030. So,

  1031. now,

  1032. what if,

  1033. right,

  1034. what if somebody

  1035. asked you directly,

  1036. right?

  1037. Say,

  1038. random person

  1039. on the street,

  1040. or a person

  1041. that you,

  1042. you know,

  1043. whatever,

  1044. crazy situation,

  1045. right?

  1046. You're like,

  1047. oh,

  1048. I don't want

1049. to be in this conversation.

  1050. Where is this going?

  1051. Why are they asking

  1052. me this question?

  1053. Do you think

  1054. homosexuality is a sin?

  1055. So,

  1056. sometimes a simple

  1057. direct answer

  1058. is best.

  1059. Yes,

  1060. I think God

  1061. intended sex

  1062. to be for marriage

  1063. between a man

  1064. and woman.

  1065. I think anything

  1066. outside of that

  1067. is not God's will

  1068. for those who

  1069. follow God.

  1070. So,

  1071. actually,

  1072. so I have a lot

  1073. of books.

  1074. Where is this one?

  1075. Okay.

  1076. So,

  1077. Beckett Cook

  1078. was an actor

  1079. in Hollywood

  1080. and he

  1081. was sitting

  1082. at a coffee shop

  1083. in LA

  1084. and he was like,

  1085. you know,

  1086. I'd never,

  1087. like,

  1088. I'd never really

  1089. interacted with

  1090. Christians in the

  1091. worlds that I lived

  1092. in.

  1093. You know,

  1094. pretty much,

  1095. we never talked

  1096. about God.

  1097. Most of us agree

  1098. that God probably

  1099. didn't exist.

  1100. And then I was

  1101. sitting at this

  1102. coffee shop and

  1103. there were these

  1104. guys,

  1105. like,

  1106. reading the Bible

  1107. together and,

  1108. like,

  1109. discussing the Bible

1110. at a table near us.

  1111. And I was like,

  1112. this is really weird.

  1113. Why are they here?

  1114. You know,

1115. this is like a hip

  1116. coffee shop in LA.

  1117. Like,

  1118. you know,

  1119. I thought they were

  1120. only in Arkansas.

  1121. You know?

  1122. And so,

  1123. he's curious

  1124. and so he's talking

  1125. to his friend

  1126. and he's like,

  1127. should we ask,

  1128. like,

  1129. so he goes over

  1130. and he's like,

  1131. who are you guys?

  1132. Like,

  1133. what are you guys

  1134. up to?

  1135. Oh,

  1136. we're Christians.

  1137. We're reading the Bible

  1138. together.

  1139. You know,

  1140. we're from this church.

  1141. You know,

1142. he asks him some more

  1143. questions and he's like,

  1144. well,

  1145. so,

  1146. you know,

  1147. what about homosexuality?

  1148. Like,

  1149. where do you guys

  1150. stand on that?

  1151. And he's like,

1152. the guy was very honest.

  1153. He said,

  1154. you know,

  1155. he and his church

  1156. did not think

  1157. that,

  1158. that,

  1159. that gay sex was,

  1160. you know,

  1161. they,

1162. they believe that gay sex

1163. was not pleasing to God.

  1164. And that guy happened

  1165. to sort of have,

  1166. that guy also said,

  1167. you know,

  1168. I also have same-sex

  1169. attractions myself,

  1170. but I've chosen

  1171. to not pursue those

  1172. because I'm committed

  1173. to following Christ.

1174. And the guy was like,

  1175. well,

  1176. that's sort of weird.

  1177. Like,

1178. why would you do that?

  1179. But then,

  1180. you know,

1181. the guy like gave him

  1182. his,

  1183. gave him his card

  1184. and was like,

  1185. hey,

1186. if you want to come

  1187. to church with me,

  1188. you're welcome.

  1189. And so,

1190. like a week and a half later,

  1191. he goes to church

  1192. and he's sitting there

  1193. and he's listening

  1194. to the sermon

  1195. and he's like,

  1196. the sermon,

  1197. he's like,

  1198. I never wanted

  1199. the sermon to end.

  1200. It was so fascinating.

  1201. Right?

  1202. You're like,

  1203. boy,

  1204. the Holy Spirit

  1205. must be working.

  1206. The sermon was like

  1207. an hour long.

  1208. Like,

  1209. you know,

  1210. and,

  1211. and he had,

  1212. so anyway,

  1213. he had this like

  1214. remarkable conversion.

  1215. Right?

  1216. Anyway,

1217. you can read the story.

  1218. But,

  1219. you know,

  1220. but he was like,

1221. it was actually really helpful

1222. that somebody was just clear

1223. and like didn't get all

  1224. weird about it.

  1225. We're just like,

  1226. well,

  1227. no,

  1228. that's where we stand.

  1229. But,

  1230. you know,

  1231. that's,

  1232. you're welcome

1233. to come to our church.

  1234. Like,

  1235. now sometimes I think

1236. it's worth trying to bring

  1237. in the bigger picture.

  1238. Right?

  1239. So,

1240. here are ways to bring

  1241. in the bigger picture.

1242. And many times Jesus did this.

  1243. So,

  1244. sometimes Jesus,

  1245. people come to Jesus

  1246. with a question

  1247. and he answers

  1248. with another question.

1249. Or he sort of brings

  1250. in a bigger picture

  1251. he doesn't answer

  1252. immediately directly.

  1253. So,

  1254. is homosexuality a sin?

  1255. Well,

1256. what do you think sin is?

  1257. Well,

  1258. the Bible says that

  1259. everyone has sinned

  1260. and fallen short

1261. of the glory of God.

  1262. So,

1263. that sort of opens up

  1264. a bigger conversation.

  1265. Right?

1266. You don't want to just

  1267. avoid the question

  1268. and never answer it.

  1269. But,

  1270. it's sort of

  1271. bringing in a bigger,

  1272. is it,

  1273. okay,

  1274. so,

  1275. you know,

  1276. so we're clear

1277. that we're not just saying

  1278. those people are sinners

  1279. and we're not.

  1280. Right?

  1281. No,

  1282. the Bible's saying

  1283. we're all sinners.

  1284. Well,

  1285. what is sin?

  1286. Right?

  1287. All right.

  1288. Third question,

  1289. should I attend a gay wedding

  1290. if I'm invited?

  1291. Okay?

  1292. Some Christians say no

  1293. because they would say

  1294. attending a wedding

  1295. means you're witnessing

  1296. and blessing the vows

1297. of the couple getting married.

  1298. Other Christians say yes,

1299. you can attend a wedding

1300. as an expression of friendship

  1301. without endorsing the marriage.

  1302. Right?

  1303. So,

  1304. is this like

  1305. going to worship

  1306. in an idol's temple

  1307. or is it like

  1308. Jesus eating and drinking

  1309. with the tax collectors?

  1310. Right?

  1311. Okay,

  1312. good question.

  1313. I think there's,

  1314. so,

  1315. there's some roles

  1316. in a wedding

  1317. that clearly communicate

  1318. I approve

  1319. and I'm here,

  1320. I'm completely behind

  1321. sort of everything

1322. that this couple is doing.

  1323. Right?

  1324. Officiating,

  1325. obviously,

  1326. I think also being

  1327. in the wedding party,

  1328. you know,

  1329. standing up there,

  1330. that's sort of symbolic,

  1331. that seems to fall

  1332. on that side.

  1333. I think just being

  1334. in the audience

  1335. may or may not

  1336. communicate approval.

  1337. So,

  1338. traditionally it did.

  1339. Traditionally it's like

  1340. God and these witnesses.

  1341. Today,

  1342. it's not,

  1343. I don't think people

  1344. see the audience

1345. in a sort of that way.

  1346. I think people

  1347. see the audience

  1348. as,

  1349. well,

  1350. they're here,

  1351. they're our friends,

1352. we want them to be

  1353. part of our party.

  1354. So,

  1355. so I think

  1356. it's more problematic

  1357. if someone

  1358. is having

  1359. same-sex wedding

  1360. explicitly

1361. in the name of Christ

  1362. and sort of

  1363. because that isn't

  1364. something that Christ

  1365. actually is

  1366. sort of authorizing

  1367. and blessing.

  1368. But,

  1369. question is to ask.

  1370. If I attend,

  1371. what will that communicate?

  1372. If I don't attend,

  1373. what will that communicate?

  1374. If I attend something

  1375. I can't fully support,

  1376. how do I maintain

  1377. integrity

  1378. in that setting?

  1379. Sort of,

  1380. what boundaries

  1381. will I draw?

  1382. So,

  1383. again,

  1384. so I,

  1385. my cousin

  1386. had a same-sex wedding.

  1387. Yes,

  1388. I have a lot of

  1389. extended family members

  1390. who are in,

  1391. who identify as LGBT

1392. and I had to ask myself,

  1393. do I go?

  1394. Right?

  1395. So,

  1396. but what do I,

  1397. what do I say

  1398. as I walk through

  1399. the receiving line?

  1400. Right?

  1401. And so I said,

  1402. you know,

  1403. I'm really glad

1404. to be here with you today

  1405. and I'm really thankful

  1406. for you,

  1407. for you guys.

  1408. Right?

  1409. I can say that

  1410. with integrity.

  1411. Right?

  1412. I'm thankful for you,

  1413. for having you guys

  1414. in my life.

  1415. Um,

  1416. but other people

1417. might choose not to attend.

1418. Other people might feel like,

  1419. I just can't do it.

  1420. Like,

  1421. I just can't do it

  1422. with integrity.

  1423. That's fine.

  1424. If you're there,

  1425. then,

1426. then I think the question is,

  1427. how do you,

  1428. sort of,

  1429. um,

  1430. be intentional

  1431. about pursuing relationship

  1432. with people

  1433. both before and afterwards?

  1434. And sort of expressing,

  1435. like,

  1436. you know,

  1437. and maybe you're

  1438. explicit about why

  1439. you can't attend,

  1440. maybe you're more distant

  1441. and you just,

  1442. you know,

  1443. uh,

  1444. decline the invitation.

1445. But how do you express,

  1446. like,

  1447. I still,

  1448. I,

  1449. I value you as a friend

1450. or as extended family member?

  1451. Um,

  1452. all right.

  1453. I'm sure these questions

  1454. raise more questions,

  1455. but we'll go on.

  1456. What about preferred pronouns

  1457. and people who adopt

  1458. a new name

1459. as part of their gender transition?

  1460. Is that,

  1461. is calling someone

  1462. by their preferred name

  1463. and pronoun

  1464. an expression of hospitality,

1465. meaning people where they are?

  1466. Or,

1467. is it bearing false witness

  1468. because you are affirming

  1469. something that,

1470. that is not actually true?

  1471. Calling someone he

1472. when they are really she

  1473. in God's eyes.

  1474. Uh,

  1475. so,

  1476. so there's a lot of pressure,

  1477. uh,

  1478. including legal pressure.

1479. I think New York City

  1480. passed a misgendering ordinance

  1481. and in Great Britain

1482. there is one as well.

  1483. Um,

  1484. so there's pressure

  1485. to just

  1486. call people

1487. whatever they want to be called

  1488. and don't you dare

  1489. question that.

  1490. Uh,

  1491. now,

  1492. I think there's a question

  1493. that as Christians

1494. we need to be discerning

  1495. and prayerful

  1496. and patient

  1497. and courageous.

  1498. So,

  1499. you know,

  1500. if somebody introduces themselves

1501. to you by a certain name,

1502. I think just go with that name,

  1503. right?

1504. I've had people introduce themselves

1505. to me by all kinds of names.

  1506. I'm G.

  1507. I'm,

  1508. you know,

  1509. whatever.

  1510. And I'm like,

  1511. I don't think that was

  1512. your birth name.

  1513. Okay?

  1514. Right?

  1515. But you know what?

1516. I'm not going to ask for their ID.

1517. I'm not going to say

1518. what did your brother name you

  1519. when you were born.

  1520. I'm not going to,

  1521. I'm just,

  1522. fine,

  1523. I'll relate to you

  1524. however you,

  1525. like,

1526. whatever name you're telling me.

  1527. Like,

  1528. we're just starting

  1529. a relationship here.

  1530. Um,

  1531. now if you have

  1532. an existing relationship

  1533. with somebody,

  1534. you could have

  1535. an honest conversation

  1536. about what you're willing

1537. or not willing to do.

  1538. So you might say,

  1539. I'm willing to

1540. call you by the name

1541. you want to be called,

  1542. but I don't feel comfortable

1543. referring to you as he.

  1544. Is that,

  1545. you know,

  1546. is that okay?

  1547. Um,

  1548. so,

  1549. in some cases

1550. you can sort of work that out.

  1551. People will accept that.

  1552. There's sort of a way of,

  1553. okay,

1554. we're trying to respect each other

  1555. and,

  1556. you know,

  1557. there may be some

  1558. give and take

  1559. on both sides.

  1560. um,

  1561. uh,

  1562. now in at least

  1563. some cases,

  1564. um,

  1565. just,

  1566. I'll,

1567. I'll get back to you.

  1568. Uh,

1569. in at least some cases

  1570. you may,

  1571. uh,

  1572. so an obvious case

  1573. might be,

  1574. uh,

  1575. someone who is suicidal,

  1576. someone who is

  1577. extremely depressed,

  1578. uh,

  1579. or mentally unstable.

  1580. Um,

  1581. I,

  1582. I think there are

  1583. certainly some cases

  1584. where you,

  1585. you might decide

  1586. it is not wise

  1587. to even attempt

  1588. to open this can

  1589. of worms right now

  1590. because there are

  1591. sort of bigger issues

  1592. at stake.

1593. And maybe we can talk

1594. about this down the road

  1595. but the best thing

  1596. would just be

  1597. let's not even

  1598. try to navigate,

  1599. you know,

  1600. let's just,

  1601. let me,

  1602. let's just try to,

  1603. uh,

  1604. sort of,

  1605. um,

  1606. uh,

  1607. even accept something

  1608. that might be

  1609. maybe less than ideal.

  1610. Um,

  1611. avoiding pronouns

  1612. is possible

  1613. at times

  1614. it can be awkward.

  1615. All right,

  1616. last question

1617. and then I'll open it up.

  1618. Uh,

1619. how do I talk about

1620. all this with my children?

1621. Or if you will have children,

  1622. right?

  1623. Christian parents

  1624. should actively

  1625. guide their children

  1626. in age-appropriate

  1627. gender identity development.

  1628. Uh,

  1629. so,

  1630. this begins with

  1631. repeatedly and regularly

  1632. affirming

  1633. in different ways

  1634. how wonderful it is

  1635. that God has made

  1636. them male or female

  1637. and explaining

  1638. God's good design

  1639. for the human body

  1640. and male and female

  1641. relationships

  1642. at an early age.

  1643. And I think

  1644. the best way

  1645. to do this

1646. is to talk about this,

  1647. uh,

  1648. before,

  1649. uh,

  1650. children are directly

  1651. confronted with sort of

  1652. fallenness and brokenness

  1653. in this area.

1654. And not as a reaction

  1655. to,

  1656. um,

  1657. seeing something

  1658. that you're like,

  1659. oh no,

  1660. I can't affirm,

  1661. I can't,

  1662. we can't promote that

1663. so I need to tell

  1664. my children

  1665. what God's design is.

  1666. No,

  1667. we,

  1668. we need to,

  1669. first,

1670. the best thing is like,

  1671. start early.

  1672. Um,

  1673. so,

  1674. uh,

  1675. we used,

  1676. uh,

1677. two books that I think

  1678. are on the bookstore

1679. called The Story of Me

1680. and Before I Was Born.

  1681. They're sort of,

  1682. um,

  1683. uh,

  1684. book,

  1685. uh,

  1686. picture books

  1687. with,

  1688. uh,

  1689. very tasteful,

  1690. uh,

  1691. illustrations.

  1692. Um,

1693. so we were the first one

  1694. when our children,

  1695. our older children

  1696. had just turned three

  1697. and five.

  1698. Uh,

1699. and so these for us

  1700. opened the door

  1701. to many further conversations.

  1702. So it's a normal topic

  1703. in our household,

  1704. uh,

1705. to talk about being male

  1706. and female,

1707. even to talk about sex.

1708. Our kids can ask us questions.

  1709. Now,

  1710. I'm not,

  1711. you know,

  1712. like,

1713. you can be discreet here.

  1714. Okay?

  1715. Right?

  1716. I'm not going,

  1717. I'm not saying let's,

  1718. you know,

  1719. be,

  1720. be,

  1721. um,

  1722. uh,

  1723. sort of,

  1724. uh,

  1725. inappropriate.

  1726. But,

  1727. but I also think,

  1728. um,

  1729. you know,

  1730. uh,

  1731. this is something

  1732. that God has made.

  1733. Right?

  1734. God made our bodies.

  1735. They're good.

  1736. He made them good.

  1737. Right?

  1738. He made humanity

  1739. to reproduce sexually.

  1740. Right?

  1741. You can explain

  1742. that to children

  1743. in an appropriate way.

  1744. Right?

  1745. It takes a mommy

  1746. and a daddy,

  1747. a man and a woman

  1748. to come together

  1749. and make a baby.

  1750. Right?

  1751. Like,

  1752. it's a mysterious,

  1753. you know,

1754. at first you can say

  1755. it's just,

  1756. it's a wonderful thing.

  1757. Like,

  1758. mommy and daddy

  1759. love each other

  1760. so much

  1761. that they want to,

  1762. um,

  1763. sort of bring,

  1764. uh,

  1765. another person

  1766. into the world.

  1767. It's a gift from God.

  1768. So,

  1769. I think it's important

  1770. not to just avoid

  1771. talking about these topics

  1772. because of some

  1773. misguided sense

  1774. of shame

  1775. or embarrassment.

  1776. Uh,

  1777. so,

1778. back in the 19th century

  1779. in the Victorian era,

  1780. and sometimes

1781. the church is a little bit

  1782. influenced by this,

  1783. nobody ever talked

  1784. about sex.

  1785. Right?

  1786. That was like

  1787. off the table.

  1788. Don't talk about it.

  1789. But,

  1790. you know what?

  1791. People talked very openly

  1792. about death.

  1793. You're gonna die.

  1794. You would take children

  1795. to maybe,

  1796. you know,

  1797. you might,

  1798. growing up,

  1799. see the corpses

  1800. of people

  1801. who were,

  1802. had passed away.

  1803. Uh,

  1804. death was not

  1805. hidden away.

  1806. Uh,

  1807. people might die

  1808. in your home.

  1809. Right?

  1810. Now,

  1811. today it's the reverse.

  1812. Right?

  1813. American adults are,

  1814. you know,

  1815. advertisement,

  1816. TV,

  1817. sex is everywhere.

  1818. But we don't want

  1819. to talk about death.

1820. And we want to keep

  1821. death behind closed doors

  1822. and somewhere else.

  1823. And we think that

  1824. not telling children

  1825. about death

  1826. at all

1827. would be a good thing

  1828. because we're

  1829. protecting them.

  1830. I don't think

  1831. the Bible,

  1832. the Bible is both

  1833. discreet,

  1834. about these topics,

  1835. but also very

  1836. frank,

  1837. actually.

  1838. Uh,

1839. talk about what they are,

  1840. God's plan for them,

  1841. and,

  1842. and the hope

  1843. that we have

  1844. as,

  1845. as Christians.

  1846. Uh,

  1847. it's not unusual

  1848. for young children

  1849. as they're exploring

  1850. the world

  1851. and their bodies

  1852. develop to say

  1853. things like,

  1854. I wish I was a boy

  1855. or I wish I was a girl.

  1856. That doesn't mean

  1857. a child has

  1858. gender dysphoria.

  1859. It probably means

  1860. they're attracted

  1861. to some quality

  1862. that they primarily

  1863. associate with

  1864. the opposite sex.

  1865. Right?

  1866. And it's good

  1867. to be able

  1868. to appreciate

  1869. qualities of

  1870. the opposite sex.

  1871. That's one quality

  1872. we want to inculcate

  1873. in our children.

  1874. Right?

  1875. Not to be

  1876. sexist,

  1877. you know,

  1878. not to be like,

  1879. oh,

  1880. I hate those girls,

  1881. I hate those boys.

  1882. No,

  1883. again,

  1884. that's probably

  1885. natural adult mental

  1886. stage,

  1887. but you've got to

  1888. help your children

  1889. get beyond that.

  1890. Right?

  1891. You don't want

  1892. that to grow up

  1893. into adulthood.

  1894. Right?

  1895. Last point,

  1896. both mothers

  1897. and fathers

  1898. should be involved

  1899. in conversations

  1900. with children

  1901. about gender

  1902. and sexuality.

  1903. This is not

  1904. a responsibility

  1905. that should be

  1906. delegated to

  1907. one parent alone.

  1908. Usually,

  1909. it's delegated

  1910. to the mother.

  1911. Dads,

  1912. take up

  1913. your responsibility.

  1914. And this is

  1915. a privilege.

  1916. It's a privilege

  1917. to be able

  1918. to talk with

  1919. your children

  1920. about these things.

  1921. And to talk

  1922. about God's design

  1923. with them

  1924. and have this

  1925. be a topic

  1926. that is part

  1927. of sort of

  1928. our ongoing

  1929. discipleship

  1930. with our children

  1931. as they grow.

  1932. And to be able

  1933. to receive

  1934. who they are

  1935. as a good gift

  1936. from God

  1937. and relate

  1938. in healthy ways

  1939. to people

  1940. of the same

  1941. or opposite sex.

  1942. All right.

  1943. Questions?

  1944. We've got ten minutes.

  1945. Ivor.

  1946. Well,

  1947. first of all,

  1948. I think this

  1949. is the best teaching

  1950. I've ever heard

  1951. about this.

  1952. and I think

  1953. you should

  1954. probably publish it.

  1955. It needs to be

  1956. out there.

  1957. But avoiding

  1958. the whole idea

  1959. of pronouns

  1960. is very good.

  1961. It's just someone's name

1962. is what I was taught

  1963. when I was counseling.

  1964. Yep.

  1965. The name.

  1966. Just say that.

  1967. Yep.

  1968. Whatever they give you,

  1969. that's what you use.

  1970. Yep.

  1971. Yep.

  1972. You can certainly

  1973. do that.

  1974. That's,

  1975. that's,

  1976. yeah.

  1977. Yeah.

  1978. And avoid

  1979. Ms.

  1980. and,

  1981. you know,

  1982. all those

  1983. different

  1984. contractions

  1985. and just use

  1986. that whole name.

  1987. Yeah.

  1988. Or title.

  1989. Yep.

  1990. Yep.

  1991. Yep.

  1992. You can just use

  1993. somebody's name.

  1994. Yep.

  1995. Elizabeth.

  1996. This is a suggestion

  1997. as a resource.

  1998. I've been watching

  1999. YouTube videos

  2000. instead of,

  2001. you know,

  2002. movies.

  2003. And Eric in Texas

  2004. interviews really

  2005. interesting people.

  2006. so one night

  2007. he was interviewing

  2008. Beckett Cook

  2009. and it was

  2010. just astounding.

  2011. So you can hear

  2012. his whole story,

  2013. you know,

  2014. on a YouTube video

  2015. instead of buying

  2016. a book.

  2017. Yeah.

  2018. And there's a guy

  2019. Yeah,

  2020. if you're cheap

  2021. or if you don't

  2022. like reading books.

  2023. Yes.

  2024. Yeah,

  2025. sorry,

  2026. go ahead.

  2027. So I just suggest

  2028. that as a resource.

  2029. And also,

  2030. yeah.

  2031. Rosaria Butterfield

  2032. has wonderful

  2033. YouTube videos.

  2034. Yes.

  2035. So I have a bunch

  2036. of books here.

  2037. I mentioned

  2038. Beckett Cook,

  2039. Rosaria,

  2040. I've got

  2041. Rosaria Butterfield.

  2042. So she's another

  2043. example of someone

  2044. who came to Christ

  2045. out of a

  2046. non-Christian

  2047. LGBT background.

  2048. Who else?

  2049. David Bennett,

  2050. he also has

  2051. an interesting story.

  2052. He also came to

  2053. faith in Jesus

  2054. as a 19-year-old

  2055. who was a

  2056. political activist

  2057. in the LGBT

  2058. community.

  2059. And I think

  2060. he was in the

  2061. UK.

  2062. And what

  2063. else?

  2064. So I have

  2065. some books

  2066. from last week

  2067. on transgender

  2068. if you're

  2069. interested in

  2070. these.

  2071. So if you're

  2072. interested in

  2073. borrowing any

  2074. of these books,

  2075. I am happy to

  2076. let you borrow

  2077. them.

  2078. These are some

  2079. on just

  2080. Washington

  2081. Waiting with

  2082. Wesley Hill,

  2083. Same-Sex Attraction

  2084. in the Church,

  2085. Ed Shaw,

  2086. Christopher Yuan.

  2087. Christopher Yuan

  2088. was here eight

  2089. years ago and

  2090. spoke at Trinity

  2091. and other places.

  2092. So he's a great

  2093. resource.

  2094. There's also a good

  2095. ministry called

  2096. Harvest USA,

  2097. and they publish,

  2098. among other things,

  2099. some sort of

  2100. shorter booklets that

  2101. address topics.

  2102. So this is

  2103. sort of your gay

  2104. child says,

  2105. I do.

  2106. What if you have

  2107. a child who is

  2108. getting married,

  2109. sort of navigating

  2110. that particular

  2111. question,

  2112. can you change

  2113. if you're gay,

  2114. homosexuality in

  2115. the Bible.

  2116. So these are

  2117. well-balanced

  2118. resources.

  2119. I wouldn't just

  2120. say take one of

  2121. these and give

  2122. them to somebody.

  2123. It's more like

  2124. for equipping

  2125. Christians and

  2126. thinking through

  2127. these things,

  2128. and for Christians

  2129. who are asking

  2130. these questions.

  2131. So if you want

  2132. to look at any

  2133. of these,

  2134. feel free to

  2135. ask.

  2136. Yes,

  2137. Dean.

  2138. I have a

  2139. general question

  2140. question,

  2141. and that is

  2142. that we're

  2143. all sinners.

  2144. Yes.

  2145. The Bible

  2146. looks at sin

  2147. in a certain

  2148. way.

  2149. Yeah.

  2150. The society

  2151. looks at sin

  2152. in a different

  2153. way.

  2154. Yes.

  2155. How often

  2156. does the

  2157. Bible

  2158. first take

  2159. identity

  2160. as sin

  2161. versus,

  2162. let's say,

  2163. compared to

  2164. let's say,

  2165. adultery or

  2166. to killing

  2167. or usury

  2168. or whatever.

  2169. Yeah.

  2170. Versus,

  2171. let's say,

  2172. how society

  2173. can be

  2174. said.

  2175. Yeah.

  2176. Yeah,

  2177. yeah,

  2178. yeah.

  2179. Yeah,

  2180. so,

  2181. I mean,

  2182. there's

  2183. certainly

  2184. some sins

  2185. that are

  2186. discussed

  2187. more often

  2188. in the

  2189. Bible

  2190. than sexual

  2191. sins.

  2192. So greed

  2193. is probably,

  2194. various forms

  2195. of greed

  2196. are probably

  2197. discussed,

  2198. you can probably

  2199. find more

  2200. Bible verses

  2201. about those.

  2202. but there

  2203. are a lot

  2204. of Bible

  2205. verses about

  2206. sort of

  2207. God's

  2208. design for

  2209. male and

  2210. female in

  2211. general,

  2212. for marriage.

  2213. Adultery is

  2214. sort of,

  2215. you know,

  2216. marriage is

  2217. sort of,

  2218. from the

  2219. beginning in

  2220. Genesis,

  2221. God's design,

  2222. and so adultery

  2223. is sort of

  2224. like the

  2225. paradigmatic

  2226. sexual sin.

  2227. In other

  2228. words,

  2229. that's sort

  2230. of like the

  2231. sexual sin

  2232. that's discussed

  2233. most often,

  2234. but it's

  2235. sort of like,

  2236. almost like,

  2237. when the Bible

  2238. talks about

  2239. adultery,

  2240. it's sort

  2241. of almost

  2242. pointing to

  2243. all the other

  2244. varieties of

  2245. sexual sins

  2246. that are

  2247. connected with

  2248. it.

  2249. So,

  2250. yes,

  2251. in terms of

  2252. gender identity,

  2253. I think I'd

  2254. go back mostly

  2255. to Genesis

  2256. about God

  2257. made us in

  2258. his image

  2259. male and

  2260. female,

  2261. and sort

  2262. of Jesus

  2263. reaffirms

  2264. that.

  2265. I think

  2266. the first

  2267. thing the

  2268. Bible is

  2269. saying is

  2270. like,

  2271. that's a

  2272. good gift

  2273. from God.

  2274. And so,

  2275. there are

  2276. not as

  2277. many verses

  2278. in the

  2279. Bible that

  2280. specifically

  2281. deal with

  2282. transgender

  2283. expressions,

  2284. partly because

  2285. they were

  2286. not very

  2287. common in

  2288. the ancient

  2289. world.

  2290. And even

  2291. today,

  2292. even though

  2293. they may be

  2294. more common,

  2295. they're still,

  2296. you know,

  2297. like,

  2298. you know,

  2299. that's why

  2300. we don't

  2301. preach on

  2302. this topic

  2303. every Sunday.

  2304. Right?

  2305. You know,

  2306. we don't

  2307. have a

  2308. long Sunday

  2309. school class

  2310. on this

  2311. every single

  2312. year.

  2313. Right?

  2314. Because we're

  2315. trying to,

  2316. as a church,

  2317. we want to

  2318. sort of see

  2319. the whole

  2320. picture and

  2321. have a

  2322. biblical

  2323. balance of

  2324. the topics

  2325. we address.

  2326. So we

  2327. wanted to

  2328. do this

  2329. as sort

  2330. of a

  2331. more

  2332. in-depth

  2333. class

  2334. because I

  2335. think there's

  2336. a danger

  2337. in sort

  2338. of very

  2339. briefly

  2340. addressing

  2341. issues like

  2342. these.

  2343. And so

  2344. we try

  2345. not to

  2346. make side

  2347. comments

  2348. about

  2349. homosexuality

  2350. or transgender

  2351. identity

  2352. that might

  2353. not be

  2354. helpful.

  2355. Right?

  2356. Because it

  2357. isn't,

  2358. it's like,

  2359. well,

  2360. why did he

  2361. make that

  2362. side comment?

  2363. Is he

  2364. just trying

  2365. to be

  2366. offensive?

  2367. Is he

  2368. just trying

  2369. to score

  2370. points with

  2371. somebody?

  2372. You know,

  2373. we want

  2374. to actually

  2375. see what

  2376. does the

  2377. Bible

  2378. actually say

  2379. about this

  2380. and sort

  2381. of take

  2382. a more

  2383. in-depth

  2384. and a

  2385. more

  2386. comprehensive

  2387. approach

  2388. so we're

  2389. not just

  2390. singling out

  2391. one issue.

  2392. So that's

  2393. the idea

  2394. behind how

  2395. this class

  2396. was put

  2397. together.

  2398. But yes,

  2399. Dean,

  2400. I appreciate

  2401. that comment.

  2402. And so we

  2403. want to

  2404. sort of,

  2405. as a church,

  2406. we want to

  2407. be growing

  2408. into the

  2409. image of

  2410. Christ in

  2411. every way

  2412. that God

  2413. has called

  2414. us to.

  2415. Tyler.

  2416. A general

  2417. question.

  2418. How do you

  2419. navigate

  2420. between

  2421. faithfulness,

  2422. will cause

  2423. and offense

  2424. to a world

  2425. that's

  2426. rebellious

  2427. against

  2428. God

  2429. versus

  2430. what we

  2431. are talking

  2432. about today

  2433. where

  2434. we don't

  2435. want to

  2436. cause

  2437. unnecessary

  2438. offense,

  2439. especially

  2440. in the LGBT

  2441. conversation.

  2442. A loving

  2443. thing is to

  2444. have some

  2445. repentance

  2446. of a sin

  2447. that grieves

  2448. God,

  2449. but at the

  2450. same time

  2451. we don't

  2452. want to

  2453. be unnecessarily

  2454. offended.

  2455. Yeah.

  2456. How do you

  2457. navigate

  2458. trying to

  2459. be faithful

  2460. which may

  2461. cause

  2462. offense

  2463. versus

  2464. I don't

  2465. want to

  2466. offend you

  2467. right now.

  2468. Right.

  2469. Right.

  2470. So just

  2471. because you

  2472. offend somebody

  2473. does not

  2474. necessarily

  2475. mean that

  2476. you have

  2477. been unfaithful

  2478. to Christ

  2479. and it

  2480. also doesn't

  2481. necessarily

  2482. mean that

  2483. you are

  2484. being faithful

  2485. to Christ

  2486. by offending

  2487. them.

  2488. So again,

  2489. I think in

  2490. general,

  2491. you know,

  2492. Paul says

  2493. I'm becoming

  2494. all things

  2495. to all people.

  2496. That's a verse

  2497. that can be

  2498. taken out of

  2499. context.

  2500. There's a context

  2501. to that.

  2502. But basically

  2503. what Paul

  2504. is saying

  2505. is I

  2506. don't want

  2507. to cause

  2508. unnecessary

  2509. offense apart

  2510. from the

  2511. truth of the

  2512. gospel and

  2513. the implications

  2514. of the

  2515. gospel.

  2516. So,

  2517. yes,

  2518. like,

  2519. you know,

  2520. the gospel

  2521. says we are

  2522. all sinners

  2523. and honestly

  2524. that offends

  2525. every human

  2526. being's pride.

  2527. Like,

  2528. and to say

  2529. yes,

  2530. the Bible

  2531. does say

  2532. that this

  2533. is a sin

  2534. among many

  2535. other things.

  2536. sometimes

  2537. somebody will

  2538. walk away

  2539. and not

  2540. want to

  2541. have anything

  2542. to do

  2543. with you

  2544. again.

  2545. And that

  2546. may be a

  2547. cost.

  2548. And I

  2549. think that's

  2550. true.

  2551. And I

  2552. think the

  2553. question in

  2554. that case

  2555. is how

  2556. do you

  2557. sort of

  2558. continue to

  2559. be open

  2560. to a

  2561. relationship

  2562. with somebody,

  2563. continue to

  2564. pray for

  2565. someone,

  2566. perhaps,

  2567. even if

  2568. they slander

  2569. you or

  2570. attack you

  2571. or want

  2572. to cut

  2573. off a

  2574. relationship

  2575. with you

  2576. in the

  2577. worst case

  2578. or just

  2579. distance

  2580. themselves

  2581. from you

  2582. or sort

  2583. of feel

  2584. like they

  2585. were offended

  2586. by you.

  2587. So,

  2588. I mean,

  2589. yes,

  2590. I've had

  2591. plenty of

  2592. cases where

  2593. people have

  2594. been offended

  2595. because I've

  2596. confronted them

  2597. about a

  2598. sin.

  2599. And,

  2600. you know,

  2601. if you've

  2602. never been

  2603. there,

  2604. then probably

  2605. if you're,

  2606. you know,

  2607. again,

  2608. I think our

  2609. responsibility to

  2610. one another

  2611. within the

  2612. body of

  2613. Christ is

  2614. if we see

  2615. each other

  2616. sort of

  2617. walking in a

  2618. habitual pattern

  2619. of sin that

  2620. dishonors God

  2621. and doesn't

  2622. live up to

  2623. sort of our

  2624. profession of

  2625. faith,

  2626. the loving

  2627. thing is to

  2628. confront each

  2629. other.

  2630. Now,

  2631. I don't think

  2632. the same thing

  2633. is you have

  2634. to go and

  2635. confront somebody

  2636. who is not

  2637. a Christian

  2638. because they

  2639. don't share

  2640. that same

  2641. framework,

  2642. right?

  2643. They don't

  2644. share that

  2645. same loyalty

  2646. to Christ.

  2647. You don't

  2648. expect a

  2649. non-Christian

  2650. to just start

  2651. living like a

  2652. Christian.

  2653. So,

  2654. you know,

  2655. there's not

  2656. the same

  2657. sort of

  2658. command there.

  2659. But,

  2660. yes?

  2661. Stephanie?

  2662. Yeah,

  2663. yeah,

  2664. yeah,

  2665. right.

  2666. That's a

  2667. great question.

  2668. And I,

  2669. the question

  2670. is how should

  2671. Christians think

  2672. about what

  2673. policies they

  2674. should support?

  2675. For example,

  2676. whether insurance

  2677. should reimburse

  2678. gender-affirming

  2679. surgery.

  2680. So,

  2681. I think,

  2682. I think that

  2683. book by

  2684. John Inazio,

  2685. Confident

  2686. Pluralism,

  2687. is a good

  2688. place to

  2689. start because

  2690. he deals

  2691. with some

  2692. very specific

  2693. examples,

  2694. not including

  2695. surgery,

  2696. but including

  2697. some transgender

  2698. rights cases.

  2699. So,

  2700. I think as

  2701. Christians we

  2702. need to think

  2703. about sort

  2704. of the common

  2705. good.

  2706. I do think

  2707. we need,

  2708. I mean,

  2709. I do think

  2710. there are

  2711. some people

  2712. who want

  2713. to say

  2714. that,

  2715. who want

  2716. to classify

  2717. all,

  2718. there are

  2719. some people

  2720. who would

  2721. want to

  2722. classify,

  2723. honestly,

  2724. some of

  2725. the things

  2726. I've said

  2727. in this

  2728. class,

  2729. as

  2730. discriminatory

  2731. hate speech.

  2732. I think

  2733. that's,

  2734. so,

  2735. and,

  2736. and,

  2737. and have

  2738. legal penalties

  2739. for that.

  2740. I think

  2741. that's a

  2742. genuine concern.

  2743. And I think

  2744. that's a

  2745. genuine concern

  2746. for all,

  2747. like,

  2748. honestly,

  2749. that Christians

  2750. should have

  2751. for religious

  2752. freedom for

  2753. all people.

  2754. You know,

  2755. there's many

  2756. Jews and

  2757. Muslims that

  2758. have,

  2759. take sort

  2760. of,

  2761. conservative

  2762. or traditional

  2763. stances on

  2764. these matters.

  2765. And,

  2766. you know,

  2767. should,

  2768. I think

  2769. the bigger

  2770. picture that

  2771. Christians can

  2772. advocate is

  2773. how can we

  2774. seek the

  2775. common good

  2776. while acknowledging

  2777. that we don't

  2778. agree on many

  2779. fundamental things

  2780. in life.

  2781. So maybe

  2782. that's sort

  2783. of a

  2784. bigger framework

  2785. for how

  2786. Christians can

  2787. think about

  2788. contributing

  2789. positively to

  2790. society.

  2791. You know,

  2792. tolerance in

  2793. the Christian

  2794. view doesn't

  2795. mean approving

  2796. everything that

  2797. everyone else

  2798. stands for,

  2799. but it does

  2800. mean honoring

  2801. people as

  2802. being made

  2803. in God's

  2804. image.

  2805. So,

  2806. I'm not

  2807. answering your

  2808. question directly,

  2809. but I'm not

  2810. sure I,

  2811. I,

  2812. it's,

  2813. it's,

  2814. it's a good

  2815. further

  2816. conversation.

  2817. All right,

  2818. one more

  2819. question.

  2820. Don Young.

  2821. Um,

  2822. my parents are

  2823. not Christians

  2824. and they

  2825. don't tend

  2826. to think

  2827. about LGBTQ

  2828. event by

  2829. people or

  2830. like these

  2831. things as

  2832. sinning or

  2833. like having

  2834. a sin.

  2835. Um,

  2836. and my

  2837. sister always

  2838. took him out

  2839. as lesbian

  2840. in China,

  2841. parents are

  2842. from China,

  2843. um,

  2844. like a decade

  2845. ago.

  2846. Um,

  2847. and they

  2848. tend to

  2849. reason,

  2850. reason this

  2851. throughout,

  2852. through a very

  2853. independent lens

  2854. because they

  2855. are not

  2856. influenced by

  2857. the Christian

  2858. culture.

  2859. Yep.

  2860. And I think

  2861. as,

  2862. so I have

  2863. a daughter

  2864. who is

  2865. infertile,

  2866. who is having

  2867. sort of

  2868. disability,

  2869. and so that

  2870. gives them

  2871. the reason to

  2872. love them

  2873. further.

  2874. Um,

  2875. so like I

  2876. have a

  2877. disabled kid

  2878. and I just

  2879. want to extend

  2880. my love,

  2881. like regardless.

  2882. Um,

  2883. that's a really

  2884. cool interpretation,

  2885. like understanding

  2886. of my sister.

  2887. Um,

  2888. and I don't,

  2889. I'm certain,

  2890. and I am this

  2891. person who,

  2892. who came to

  2893. Christ five

  2894. years ago,

  2895. and trying to

  2896. like sort of

  2897. present my ideas

  2898. through a Christian

  2899. lens,

  2900. which could be

  2901. challenging,

  2902. um,

  2903. and sort of

  2904. overturning their

  2905. ideas.

  2906. I don't want to,

  2907. yeah,

  2908. but anyways,

  2909. I thought their,

  2910. their way of

  2911. thinking of this

  2912. is actually good

  2913. as well.

  2914. Um,

  2915. at least that

  2916. make them feel

  2917. like easy to go

  2918. by in their

  2919. hearts and how

  2920. to love their

  2921. daughter.

  2922. Yeah,

  2923. so they sort

  2924. of see,

  2925. uh,

  2926. they're sort of

  2927. seeing it through

  2928. the,

  2929. we talked

  2930. last week

  2931. about the,

  2932. sort of a

  2933. disability

  2934. framework for

  2935. seeing,

  2936. uh,

  2937. things sort

  2938. of,

  2939. so they

  2940. see,

  2941. uh,

  2942. your sisters,

  2943. um,

  2944. uh,

  2945. being a

  2946. lesbian as

  2947. she's sort

  2948. of,

  2949. uh,

  2950. uh,

  2951. a condition

  2952. that,

  2953. that should,

  2954. uh,

  2955. lead them to be

  2956. compassionate and

  2957. loving to her,

  2958. right?

  2959. And I think,

  2960. I think at that

  2961. level Christians

  2962. can,

  2963. can,

  2964. can agree.

  2965. Yes,

  2966. we should be

  2967. compassionate and

  2968. loving to

  2969. people.

  2970. We all,

  2971. like,

  2972. uh,

  2973. struggle in

  2974. this world

  2975. with many

  2976. burdens,

  2977. um,

  2978. and many

  2979. difficult

  2980. challenges.

  2981. So,

  2982. so I think,

  2983. I think,

  2984. yeah,

  2985. I think in

  2986. this case,

  2987. I,

  2988. I think I

  2989. would,

  2990. you know,

  2991. I,

  2992. I think I

  2993. would encourage

  2994. you to

  2995. talk about,

  2996. I mean,

  2997. I think the

  2998. first thing you

  2999. want to

  3000. communicate is,

  3001. like,

  3002. the bigger

  3003. picture of

  3004. Christianity

  3005. Christianity

  3006. and what,

  3007. and who

  3008. God is,

  3009. who people

  3010. are,

  3011. who Christ

  3012. is,

  3013. um,

  3014. I think only

  3015. when,

  3016. when they sort

  3017. of understand

  3018. the bigger

  3019. message of

  3020. Christianity

  3021. would it make

  3022. sense to

  3023. sort of have,

  3024. you know,

  3025. I,

  3026. I,

  3027. I think

  3028. understanding

  3029. the Christian

  3030. view on

  3031. this issue

  3032. will only

  3033. make sense

  3034. in light

  3035. of the

  3036. bigger

  3037. story of

  3038. Christianity.

  3039. Is that,

  3040. um,

  3041. all right,

  3042. let's pray,

  3043. uh,

  3044. and I know we

  3045. ran a little

  3046. late,

  3047. so let's head

  3048. upstairs for

  3049. service after

  3050. this.

  3051. Lord,

  3052. thank you for

  3053. this time.

  3054. We pray that

  3055. you would give

  3056. us your

  3057. wisdom,

  3058. uh,

  3059. and,

  3060. uh,

  3061. fill us,

  3062. Lord,

  3063. with,

  3064. uh,

  3065. the,

  3066. the love

  3067. of Christ,

  3068. uh,

  3069. that would

  3070. lead us

  3071. to extend

  3072. hospitality.

  3073. Uh,

  3074. we pray that

  3075. you would

  3076. also fill

  3077. us with

  3078. the,

  3079. uh,

  3080. conviction

  3081. of the

  3082. Holy Spirit

  3083. to pursue

  3084. holiness,

  3085. uh,

  3086. to be people

  3087. who are

  3088. distinct and

  3089. different,

  3090. um,

  3091. because we

  3092. belong to

  3093. you.

  3094. Uh,

  3095. we pray,

  3096. uh,

  3097. that,

  3098. um,

  3099. uh,

  3100. that you

  3101. would be

  3102. working through

  3103. us for

  3104. your glory

  3105. to bring

  3106. many people,

  3107. uh,

  3108. to know

  3109. and love

  3110. you and,

  3111. uh,

  3112. submit their

  3113. lives to

  3114. you.

  3115. In Jesus'

  3116. name we

  3117. pray.

  3118. Amen.
