  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Our sermon text this morning is Genesis chapter 11.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  3. Starting in verse 10, we're going to go through chapter 12, verse 4.

  4. That is page 8 in the Pew Bible, if you want to follow along there.

  5. If you're new to the Bible, the big numbers are the chapter numbers.

  6. The small numbers are the verse numbers.

  7. We're going to pick up our reading about halfway through our total sermon text this morning.

  8. In chapter 11, verse 27.

  9. Let me pray as we come to God's word.

  10. Speak, O Lord.

  11. Build your church.

  12. And fill the earth with your glory.

  13. God, what a powerful prayer that is.

  14. Make it our own this morning.

  15. And make it a reality in our midst.

  16. Through the grace of Jesus and the power of your Holy Spirit.

  17. Amen.

  18. Genesis 11.

  19. Picking up in verse 27 through chapter 12, verse 4.

  20. Let me read this for us.

  21. Now, these are the generations of Terah.

  22. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

  23. And Haran fathered Lot.

  24. Haran died in the presence of his father, Terah, and the land of his kindred, and Ur of the Chaldeans.

  25. And Abram and Nahor took wives.

  26. The name of Abram's wife was Sarah.

  27. And the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah.

  28. The daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

  29. Now Sarah was barren.

  30. She had no child.

  31. Terah took Abram, his son, and Lot, the son of Haran, his grandson.

  32. And Sarah, his daughter-in-law, his son, Abram's wife.

  33. And they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan.

  34. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.

  35. The days of Terah were 205 years.

  36. And Terah died in Haran.

  37. Now the Lord said to Abram,

  38. Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

  39. And I will make of you a great nation.

  40. And I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing.

  41. I will bless those who bless you.

  42. And him who dishonors you I will curse.

  43. And in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

  44. So Abram went, as the Lord had told him.

  45. And Lot went with him.

  46. Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran.

  47. Well, this morning, we've pretty much come to the end of our sermon series in Genesis 1 through 11.

  48. But, obviously, we haven't come to the end of the book of Genesis.

  49. Actually, we've come to the critical turning point.

  50. And it's not just the critical turning point of the book of Genesis, but really of the whole Old Testament.

  51. This is the turning point that will set the course of the rest of redemptive history.

  52. This is it.

  53. This is where the story turns to something special and particular and saving and exciting.

  54. This is where God's story takes its turn.

  55. And because of that, this passage is meant to serve as a turning point for our lives, too.

  56. Here is a passage that, if you will hear it, if we will hear it, will turn your whole life around.

  57. Set you on a new trajectory and never leave you the same.

  58. What happens in Genesis, what happens in the life of Abram, later to be called Abraham, in the history of redemption, it can happen in your life, too.

  59. So, what is it?

  60. What is actually going on here?

  61. Well, there are three pieces to this turning point that I want us to look at today.

  62. And they're all found in verses 1 through 3 of chapter 12.

  63. And the first thing that we see is the blessing that we all need.

  64. The blessing we all need.

  65. God calls Abram at the beginning of chapter 12 and says,

  66. I will bless you.

  67. And then in verse 3, we see that this blessing is meant to reach all the families of the earth.

  68. What is this universal blessing that begins with Abraham and spreads to the ends of the earth?

  69. Now, in order to understand this blessing, we have to see it in the context of the book of Genesis so far.

  70. Because at first glance, it looks like it means nothing more than Abraham having a lot of descendants.

  71. I'll make you a great nation.

  72. And getting a great reputation.

  73. I'll make your name great.

  74. Now, for Abraham, this blessing certainly does mean that.

  75. But the heart of this blessing, this universal blessing for all families of the earth,

  76. it's much deeper than that.

  77. After all, material blessing isn't really what we ultimately need.

  78. Is it?

  79. Of course, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't seek to sacrificially help others physically,

  80. financially, socially, educationally.

  81. All those things are entailed in loving our neighbor as ourself.

  82. They're good things.

  83. They are important things.

  84. They're worthy things.

  85. But what do we really need ultimately, eternally?

  86. How many millionaires, though they have no material needs, humanly speaking, aren't really satisfied?

  87. How many movie stars, though everyone recognizes their name and face, aren't really at peace?

  88. I was just, I've been reading a journal lately of a famous 20th century spiritual writer who spent some missionary time in Latin America.

  89. And he reflects on the fact that, though here he is in the middle of one of the poorest suburbs of Lima, Peru, ministering among the poor,

  90. still his heart aches for something more.

  91. Why is it that even our best efforts at philanthropy can still leave our hearts longing?

  92. What makes us think that more money and more approval will cure the deep ache that we feel?

  93. So what is this blessing, then, here in Genesis 12?

  94. Well, consider with me, then, the context of Genesis.

  95. Back in chapter 11, verse 10, we're given another genealogy.

  96. How many genealogies are we going to see in Genesis 1 through 11?

  97. Not another one.

  98. Yes, another genealogy, starting in verse 10.

  99. This time, from Shem, the son of Noah, down to Abraham, the son of Terah.

  100. And from Shem to Abraham is 10 generations.

  101. Now, if you've been coming to Trinity this fall, that might remind you of another earlier genealogy in Genesis 1 through 11.

  102. In chapter 5, Genesis gives us the genealogy from Adam to Noah.

  103. And from Adam to Noah, you guessed it, there are 10 generations.

  104. So you start to see that there's a literary shape going on in this early part of Genesis.

  105. Think about it.

  106. In Genesis 1 through 5, what do we have?

  107. Creation, fall, and then this sort of stretch of 10 generations.

  108. In Genesis 6 through 11, what do we have?

  109. The flood and its new creation, the fall of Babel, and then 10 generations.

  110. You see, these 10 generations are a signal that God's redemptive plan is moving forward.

  111. We're taking a big leap ahead into the next significant event.

  112. Now, what happened after the fall of Genesis 3 and 4 and those 10 generations?

  113. The flood.

  114. Worldwide judgment.

  115. So what would we expect to happen after the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11 in these 10 generations?

  116. Humanity rebelling against God.

  117. Again, seeking their own way and our own ambitions and their own kingdom.

  118. If a flood fell the first time, what's going to come this time?

  119. But this time, it's different.

  120. A flood doesn't fall.

  121. Instead, God makes a promise.

  122. A binding promise.

  123. A covenant with Abraham.

  124. I will bless you.

  125. Wonder of wonders.

  126. When humanity deserves judgment,

  127. God speaks a word of blessing.

  128. And as he speaks that word of blessing,

  129. don't you hear an echo of Genesis 1?

  130. The story of God's creation in Genesis 1 resounds with blessing, does it not?

  131. God delighting over his creation.

  132. Declaring it all good.

  133. Declaring it even very good.

  134. From the highest star to the most obscure atom, the whole thing.

  135. Very good.

  136. And at the climax of that story of creation in Genesis 1 28,

  137. after God creates humanity in his own image,

  138. the text says,

  139. God blessed them.

  140. Now, we don't use this language of blessing much in our day and age, in our culture.

  141. Do we?

  142. Sounds kind of weird, doesn't it?

  143. I bless you, my son.

  144. I bless you, my daughter.

  145. That's a strange language for us.

  146. I get it.

  147. But you know, we know the feeling when we get it, don't we?

  148. Like a father or a mother who takes their child up in their arms and says,

  149. you, I love you.

  150. And I know you'll do great things and I will be with you every step of the way.

  151. It's you.

  152. Deep down in our bones, we know what it means to be blessed,

  153. to be accepted, to be approved, to find favor in someone's eyes.

  154. Yes, we know it, even if we don't use this language for it.

  155. But perhaps we know it most, tragically, by its absence.

  156. Those deep wounds of rejection, of abandonment,

  157. we know at our gut level what blessing means because so often we don't have it.

  158. But deeper under those human rejections and abandonments,

  159. even deeper still, the heart knows that divine blessing,

  160. that peace with God intended in creation,

  161. that creational, divine blessing.

  162. Deep down we know it's been lost.

  163. That we're actually out of joint with our creator,

  164. that we're alienated from our true home.

  165. And again, is this not the story that we've been reading in Genesis?

  166. Is this not the history of everyone and everything?

  167. Creation begins in blessing,

  168. but humans rebel against God,

  169. reject God as God,

  170. and the result is curse.

  171. Genesis 3 tells the whole story.

  172. Genesis 4 describes the fallout.

  173. And the rest of human history,

  174. and the rest of human history, friends,

  175. is the sad tale of creatures seeking some sort of remedy

  176. for that lost blessing in created things rather than their creator.

  177. Why doesn't the money satisfy?

  178. Why doesn't the fame bring peace?

  179. Because the real blessing you're longing for

  180. isn't from a creature or a created thing.

  181. You were made to have the blessing of your maker.

  182. When God says to Abram,

  183. I'll bless those who bless you,

  184. and those who dishonor you,

  185. I will curse.

  186. He's not just saying that the status of the nations

  187. will be determined by their relationship to Abram.

  188. But more than that,

  189. God is promising in those words

  190. to be Abram's defender and shield.

  191. To be closer than a brother,

  192. to be jealous over Abram like a lover.

  193. That's what these words are talking about.

  194. The quality of the Lord's relationship with Abram now.

  195. And that's the blessing we need.

  196. To be right with God.

  197. To have God no longer as our judge,

  198. but as our friend.

  199. But how in the world can God bless sinners

  200. who deserve his curse?

  201. This is the great problem,

  202. the great question

  203. that hangs pregnant over the entire Old Testament.

  204. In Genesis 6, after 10 generations,

  205. it was a flood that fell,

  206. and only a few were saved.

  207. In Genesis 12,

  208. after the 10 generations,

  209. we expect some sort of judgment,

  210. but the flood doesn't fall.

  211. On what basis does this blessing to Abram

  212. for all families of the earth come to us?

  213. And the answer to that question wouldn't come

  214. for almost 1,500 years after Abram.

  215. The curse humanity deserved,

  216. that you and I deserved,

  217. would actually fall like a flood,

  218. but it would fall on another.

  219. It would fall on the true offspring of Abraham,

  220. on the child born into Abram's family

  221. who would take up our humanity

  222. and live a life in perfect acceptance

  223. with his heavenly father.

  224. He would be utterly blessed.

  225. God would say over him,

  226. this is my beloved son

  227. in whom I'm well pleased.

  228. And then at 30 years of age,

  229. after walking in perfect,

  230. blessed fellowship with his father,

  231. Jesus would go willingly to a cross

  232. and become a curse for us.

  233. And all the wretchedness of sin

  234. and all the dark intentions

  235. and malicious thoughts of our hearts,

  236. Jesus Christ would bear all of it.

  237. The Old Testament law said,

  238. cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.

  239. And in the first century,

  240. there was no greater expression of that

  241. than a Roman cross.

  242. As the victims hung naked

  243. and shamed and bleeding and mocked,

  244. the pain of crucifixion was only matched

  245. by the public humiliation and shame of it.

  246. You see, the Romans saved crucifixion

  247. for the social nobodies.

  248. This was the way the empire disposed of its trash.

  249. And there, God incarnate hung.

  250. The flood of human depravity

  251. and the curse of sin poured upon him.

  252. Why?

  253. So that the blessing you and I were created to have

  254. could be ours once more.

  255. In love, Christ became a curse

  256. so that a blessing might come to all nations,

  257. to you and me.

  258. That's what Paul was getting on about

  259. in that passage we read earlier.

  260. The perfect blessed one

  261. stands in our place of the curse

  262. so that we, the cursed ones,

  263. could receive a blessing.

  264. What wonderful good news.

  265. Consider then, friends,

  266. that you cannot earn this blessing of God.

  267. That's also part of what Paul's talking about

  268. in Galatians 2 that we read earlier.

  269. All who rely on works of the law,

  270. that is your performance,

  271. your pedigree,

  272. all who rely on those things

  273. remain under a curse.

  274. Could that be why

  275. the harder we try to get peace

  276. through achievement

  277. and through approval

  278. and through human relationships,

  279. the harder we try,

  280. the more peace seems so elusive.

  281. Abram did nothing

  282. to deserve God's blessing.

  283. He was just following his dad

  284. on what seemed to be a fool's errand.

  285. You can do nothing

  286. to deserve God's blessing.

  287. It's not a reward for hard work done.

  288. It's a gift given through the promise

  289. purchased by Christ.

  290. This blessing that we all need

  291. is a great equalizer then,

  292. is it not?

  293. All of us,

  294. rich or poor,

  295. black or white,

  296. male or female,

  297. high or low,

  298. all of us stand as equals

  299. when it comes to what really matters.

  300. All of us receive God's blessing

  301. sheerly by grace as a gift.

  302. None can say,

  303. I deserved it.

  304. As one great old hymn puts it,

  305. nothing in my hands I bring,

  306. simply to the cross I cling.

  307. And that means we are all alike

  308. in dignity as well.

  309. God took the curse

  310. and promised the blessing

  311. for all who believe.

  312. Maybe you don't enjoy

  313. many material blessing in this life,

  314. but the Christian has a blessing

  315. that makes every other blessing

  316. seem like fool's gold in comparison.

  317. The acceptance of God,

  318. an inheritance in his kingdom,

  319. the dignity of a child of God.

  320. Each and every one of you

  321. in Christ.

  322. So this turning point,

  323. first, is about the blessing

  324. we all need.

  325. Second, it's about the departure

  326. we must take.

  327. God's blessing comes to Abram

  328. through sheer grace,

  329. but in response,

  330. the Lord tells Abram

  331. to go.

  332. Notice how verse one

  333. moves from the general

  334. to the specific.

  335. Go from your country,

  336. your kindred,

  337. and even your father's house

  338. to the land that I will show you.

  339. And the great question here is,

  340. will Abram believe God's promise

  341. and go?

  342. Now, don't think

  343. that this was an easy decision

  344. for Abram.

  345. Look at the text.

  346. He's getting old.

  347. His wife is barren.

  348. His familial duties

  349. to his father

  350. have moved him

  351. halfway across the known world

  352. from Ur to Haran.

  353. And now,

  354. his father has just died.

  355. Grieving his father,

  356. Abram is a stranger

  357. in a strange land,

  358. now solely responsible

  359. for his dead brother's son,

  360. Lot,

  361. but with no children

  362. of his own.

  363. Now,

  364. what's a person to do

  365. in that situation?

  366. The natural thing to do

  367. is to go back to Ur.

  368. Go back to your homeland.

  369. Go back to your extended family

  370. where you know people

  371. and where you and Sarah

  372. can settle down

  373. and hopefully find

  374. some extended relative

  375. to take care of you

  376. in your old age.

  377. Isn't this what reason

  378. and common sense

  379. would demand?

  380. Isn't this what reason

  381. and common sense would demand?

  382. But then comes

  383. the promise of God,

  384. the promise of blessing,

  385. if Abram will trust

  386. God's word

  387. and go.

  388. Now, unlike Abram,

  389. God isn't necessarily

  390. telling us

  391. to leave our physical

  392. countries and homes.

  393. Abram did have

  394. a unique role

  395. in redemptive history.

  396. So, who are we

  397. most like

  398. in this story?

  399. Well, I think you and I

  400. must first

  401. put ourselves

  402. in the shoes

  403. of those families,

  404. the nations.

  405. That is,

  406. all the families

  407. of the earth

  408. in verse 3.

  409. That's us

  410. in this story.

  411. But we have

  412. a departure

  413. to make

  414. as well.

  415. because where

  416. is blessing

  417. to be found

  418. for us?

  419. Not in a piece

  420. of land,

  421. but in a person.

  422. What does the text

  423. say?

  424. In you,

  425. Abram,

  426. all the families

  427. of the earth

  428. shall be blessed.

  429. That is,

  430. to receive

  431. the blessing

  432. of God,

  433. we must find

  434. it in him.

  435. only by identifying

  436. with Abraham's

  437. family

  438. is there any

  439. hope

  440. of anyone,

  441. of any family

  442. getting God's

  443. blessing.

  444. And as the

  445. biblical story

  446. unfolds

  447. into the New

  448. Testament,

  449. we see in the

  450. opening chapter

  451. of Matthew 1,

  452. as the New

  453. Testament opens

  454. up,

  455. that the

  456. offspring of

  457. Abraham,

  458. the fulfillment

  459. of this promise

  460. in whom the

  461. nations will find

  462. their blessing,

  463. the fulfillment

  464. is Jesus.

  465. How do we get

  466. into the

  467. spiritual family

  468. of Abraham?

  469. It's not by

  470. circumcision,

  471. but by uniting

  472. ourselves in

  473. faith to Jesus

  474. Christ,

  475. the promised

  476. one of Abraham,

  477. the one in whom

  478. all these promises

  479. of blessing find

  480. their yes in

  481. God.

  482. But identifying

  483. with Jesus

  484. certainly means

  485. a departure.

  486. A departure

  487. no less

  488. than that of

  489. Abraham in

  490. Genesis 12.

  491. Our identity,

  492. the thing that we

  493. base our life

  494. on,

  495. the thing that you

  496. maybe could point

  497. to and say,

  498. that's who I am.

  499. That center

  500. of our life

  501. has to shift.

  502. the primary

  503. identity of our

  504. life can no

  505. longer be our

  506. family background,

  507. our moral

  508. uprightness,

  509. our work

  510. success.

  511. The primary

  512. identity must

  513. be the

  514. person of

  515. Jesus,

  516. who he is

  517. and what he's

  518. done.

  519. And make no

  520. mistake about

  521. it,

  522. God's blessing

  523. is found

  524. nowhere else.

  525. God doesn't

  526. bless Abraham

  527. and say,

  528. you will be

  529. one of many

  530. spiritual roads

  531. back to my

  532. favor.

  533. It's not

  534. what he says.

  535. No,

  536. only in you,

  537. Abraham,

  538. only in the

  539. thing that I'm

  540. starting with you

  541. will all the

  542. families of the

  543. earth be

  544. blessed.

  545. Why?

  546. Because only

  547. through Jesus

  548. does God deal

  549. with the real

  550. problem.

  551. Only in Jesus

  552. does God deal

  553. with the curse,

  554. with sin.

  555. I mean,

  556. think about it.

  557. If there was

  558. any other way

  559. for us to get

  560. back to God,

  561. why would God

  562. send his only

  563. son to die

  564. for us?

  565. If his blessing

  566. could come

  567. through some

  568. other means

  569. or some

  570. other path,

  571. why would

  572. the father

  573. allow his

  574. only son

  575. to bear

  576. the curse

  577. and the

  578. shame

  579. of crucifixion?

  580. It's the

  581. only way.

  582. And so

  583. we must

  584. make the

  585. departure

  586. from an

  587. identity built

  588. on whatever

  589. we might

  590. be trusting

  591. in to an

  592. identity built

  593. ultimately on

  594. Christ alone.

  595. and that's

  596. a radical

  597. departure.

  598. More radical

  599. than leaving

  600. country and

  601. kindred and

  602. father's house.

  603. In fact,

  604. it's a departure

  605. so radical that

  606. according to the

  607. New Testament,

  608. you actually

  609. can't make it

  610. on your own.

  611. we cling

  612. too tightly

  613. to our

  614. old identities.

  615. They're,

  616. after all,

  617. our security

  618. and our

  619. comfort

  620. and our

  621. hope.

  622. We don't

  623. want to let

  624. that go

  625. and make

  626. Jesus the

  627. center of

  628. our life.

  629. There's too

  630. much at stake.

  631. There's friends

  632. that I'll lose

  633. and there's

  634. pleasures that

  635. I'll forgo

  636. and there's

  637. ridicule that

  638. I'll receive.

  639. you can't

  640. make this

  641. departure

  642. on your

  643. own.

  644. But

  645. thankfully,

  646. Jesus

  647. didn't leave

  648. us on our

  649. own.

  650. After three

  651. days in the

  652. grave,

  653. Jesus rose

  654. again in

  655. power and

  656. he spent

  657. 40 days with

  658. his disciples

  659. and then

  660. ascended to

  661. the Father

  662. in heaven

  663. completing

  664. his redemptive

  665. work and

  666. sitting at

  667. the Father's

  668. right hand

  669. telling his

  670. disciples to

  671. wait for the

  672. promise of

  673. the Holy

  674. Spirit.

  675. And at

  676. Pentecost,

  677. the Spirit

  678. came and

  679. it changed

  680. him from

  681. the inside

  682. out.

  683. And the

  684. Holy Spirit

  685. continues the

  686. same work

  687. today.

  688. The Spirit,

  689. you see,

  690. liberates us

  691. to let go

  692. of our old

  693. identities and

  694. to find the

  695. beauty of

  696. Christ and

  697. take hold of

  698. him and be

  699. found in

  700. him.

  701. This

  702. departure of

  703. faith is the

  704. ongoing work of

  705. the Holy Spirit

  706. and he's doing

  707. it today.

  708. all across

  709. the world

  710. as people

  711. release this

  712. and take

  713. hold of

  714. their Savior.

  715. Perhaps

  716. he's doing

  717. it in you

  718. right now.

  719. Compelling

  720. you,

  721. calling you

  722. to rest

  723. in this

  724. Savior who

  725. loves you

  726. with an

  727. infinite love

  728. and to hear

  729. the word of

  730. divine blessing

  731. your heart so

  732. longs to hear

  733. you are my

  734. son,

  735. you are my

  736. daughter,

  737. in you I'm

  738. well pleased.

  739. And as we

  740. set out on

  741. this departure,

  742. the promise is

  743. that the Spirit

  744. never leaves us.

  745. You see,

  746. the departure

  747. of conversion

  748. is just the

  749. start of a

  750. lifelong pilgrimage

  751. of faith.

  752. In Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  753. chapter 11,

  754. the author

  755. talks again

  756. about this

  757. moment in

  758. Abram's life

  759. just like Paul

  760. did in

  761. Galatians

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  762. chapter 3.

  763. Here in

  764. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  765. 11,

  766. Hebrews comes

  767. back to this

  768. moment in

  769. Abram's life

  770. talking about

  771. how Abram

  772. had to go.

  773. Not knowing

  774. what lie

  775. ahead,

  776. trusting God's

  777. word.

  778. This

  779. lifelong

  780. journey

  781. wasn't

  782. easy for

  783. Abram.

  784. And the

  785. reality is,

  786. friends,

  787. it won't be

  788. easy for

  789. us.

  790. There will

  791. be years

  792. of

  793. discouragement

  794. and trial.

  795. Abram will

  796. often find

  797. himself in

  798. trouble and

  799. conflict.

  800. At one point

  801. in his life,

  802. he has to

  803. muster up an

  804. army and

  805. go lead a

  806. liberation band

  807. to free

  808. Lot from

  809. some kings

  810. who had

  811. kidnapped

  812. him.

  813. There will

  814. be years of

  815. doubt and

  816. uncertainty for

  817. us.

  818. Abram and

  819. Sarah have

  820. remained

  821. childless for

  822. decades after

  823. this moment,

  824. wondering when

  825. God would

  826. ever do what

  827. he was going

  828. to do and

  829. kind of doubting

  830. it was going

  831. to happen and

  832. at one point

  833. even laughing

  834. because it

  835. seems so

  836. absurd.

  837. There will

  838. be moments

  839. of confusion

  840. and pain.

  841. Abram was

  842. called to

  843. offer over

  844. his only son

  845. to the

  846. Lord.

  847. But through

  848. it all,

  849. God never

  850. left Abraham.

  851. Hebrews 11

  852. says,

  853. we're looking

  854. forward to

  855. a city that

  856. has foundations,

  857. whose designer

  858. and builder

  859. is God.

  860. The journey

  861. of faith

  862. may have

  863. many twists

  864. and turns.

  865. The road

  866. may seem to

  867. crumble beneath

  868. us, but God

  869. will bring us

  870. safely home.

  871. So, Christian,

  872. if you're in a

  873. season of trial,

  874. of doubt,

  875. if you cannot

  876. hear or feel

  877. the blessing

  878. of God at

  879. this moment,

  880. hold on.

  881. God has

  882. not abandoned

  883. you.

  884. You remain

  885. his beloved

  886. child.

  887. Though all

  888. the world

  889. may shake

  890. and crumble,

  891. the crucified

  892. and risen

  893. Christ stands

  894. up for you

  895. and the Holy

  896. Spirit abides

  897. within.

  898. So keep

  899. pressing on

  900. God's

  901. promise

  902. remains

  903. and nothing

  904. can shake

  905. it.

  906. But as we

  907. take this

  908. departure of

  909. faith,

  910. trusting in

  911. God's promise

  912. of blessing,

  913. there's a third

  914. element to this

  915. turning point.

  916. We've seen the

  917. blessing that we

  918. all need and

  919. the departure

  920. that we must

  921. take.

  922. But third,

  923. the mission

  924. that we now

  925. have.

  926. God tells

  927. Abram in

  928. verse 2,

  929. I will bless

  930. you and

  931. make your

  932. name great

  933. so that

  934. you will

  935. be a

  936. blessing.

  937. Abraham

  938. was blessed

  939. to be

  940. a blessing.

  941. Some of

  942. my friends

  943. in ministry

  944. would probably

  945. say,

  946. now that'll

  947. preach.

  948. Abram was

  949. blessed to

  950. be a

  951. blessing.

  952. What he

  953. received was

  954. meant to

  955. overflow to

  956. others.

  957. Now imagine

  958. the nation

  959. of Israel

  960. hearing Moses

  961. recite this

  962. story on the

  963. verge of

  964. crossing into

  965. the promised

  966. land.

  967. What they

  968. heard wasn't

  969. just the

  970. promise of

  971. God's blessing

  972. for them,

  973. but that

  974. through them

  975. that blessing

  976. would come to

  977. all nations.

  978. They were

  979. hearing that

  980. they had a

  981. mission to

  982. bring blessing

  983. to all the

  984. families of

  985. the earth.

  986. And it's the

  987. same with the

  988. people of God

  989. today, with the

  990. church today.

  991. In Christ, we

  992. have received

  993. every spiritual

  994. blessing in the

  995. heavenly places,

  996. and that blessing

  997. is meant to

  998. overflow.

  999. Jesus says to

  1000. us, you're the

  1001. light of the

  1002. world.

  1003. You are the

  1004. salt of the

  1005. earth.

  1006. Your life isn't

  1007. meant to be

  1008. lived for

  1009. yourself, but

  1010. for the great

  1011. purposes of

  1012. God in the

  1013. world.

  1014. There are

  1015. people groups

  1016. on earth

  1017. today who

  1018. have never

  1019. heard the

  1020. good news

  1021. of Jesus

  1022. Christ.

  1023. How will

  1024. we as a

  1025. church play

  1026. a part in

  1027. bringing God's

  1028. news of

  1029. blessing to

  1030. them?

  1031. Perhaps God

  1032. is calling

  1033. your life to

  1034. be a part of

  1035. that story and

  1036. to go.

  1037. There are

  1038. people right

  1039. here in our

  1040. city who are

  1041. struggling to

  1042. find warm

  1043. places to

  1044. stay, to put

  1045. food on their

  1046. tables, to get

  1047. through school

  1048. and graduate.

  1049. How are we

  1050. as a church

  1051. bringing God's

  1052. blessing to

  1053. them?

  1054. You see,

  1055. something happens

  1056. when you receive

  1057. the good news

  1058. of Jesus, when

  1059. the Holy Spirit

  1060. unites you to

  1061. Christ through

  1062. faith.

  1063. And you

  1064. become a

  1065. recipient of

  1066. grace, of

  1067. God's favor

  1068. and blessing.

  1069. What happens

  1070. is you start

  1071. to sit loose

  1072. to a lot of

  1073. other stuff in

  1074. your life.

  1075. Because the

  1076. reality is, at

  1077. a deep

  1078. spiritual level,

  1079. you don't need

  1080. it anymore.

  1081. You don't need

  1082. to hoard

  1083. possessions and

  1084. money.

  1085. In Christ, you

  1086. have an internal

  1087. inheritance that

  1088. will never fade.

  1089. You have a

  1090. dignity and a

  1091. worth that money

  1092. literally cannot

  1093. buy.

  1094. money.

  1095. So you can be

  1096. sacrificially

  1097. generous now.

  1098. Money has lost

  1099. its power over

  1100. your life and

  1101. you can give it

  1102. away.

  1103. And you don't

  1104. need to cling

  1105. tightly to your

  1106. time.

  1107. In Christ, you

  1108. literally have all

  1109. the time in the

  1110. world and in the

  1111. world to come.

  1112. time.

  1113. So you can take

  1114. time to spend

  1115. with others.

  1116. And you can

  1117. make your

  1118. schedule revolve

  1119. around things

  1120. other than your

  1121. own entertainment

  1122. and your own

  1123. pursuits.

  1124. God doesn't want

  1125. the blessing to

  1126. stop with you.

  1127. He wants it to

  1128. keep going.

  1129. Question, how are

  1130. you blessing others

  1131. right here in your

  1132. church family?

  1133. How are you

  1134. actively serving and

  1135. loving others right

  1136. here?

  1137. You know, if we

  1138. should learn anything

  1139. from our modern

  1140. culture, it is that

  1141. mere consumption

  1142. makes us bored.

  1143. Man, how, okay,

  1144. true confessions,

  1145. how many of you

  1146. really wished that

  1147. the Mandalorian that

  1148. just got released on

  1149. Disney Plus was

  1150. something you could

  1151. just stream all eight

  1152. episodes of?

  1153. If you have no

  1154. idea what I'm

  1155. talking about, you

  1156. come up to me

  1157. afterwards and we'll

  1158. pray about it.

  1159. Right?

  1160. You want to just

  1161. binge it, but we

  1162. got to wait every

  1163. week.

1164. But how many of us

  1165. after binging that

  1166. Netflix show we've

  1167. been waiting so long

  1168. to see?

  1169. Gosh, we just feel

  1170. so bored.

  1171. It's just kind of

  1172. icky.

  1173. Don't just be a

  1174. consumer in the

  1175. spiritual family of

  1176. the church.

  1177. Be a participant.

  1178. Take up your part

  1179. to play.

  1180. Get about the

  1181. mission.

  1182. Produce the show

  1183. that's unfolding

  1184. right before your

  1185. eyes.

  1186. You are blessed to

  1187. be a blessing and

  1188. there in that

  1189. mission, you will

  1190. find what you were

  1191. created for.

  1192. A deeper communion

  1193. with God.

  1194. friends, you were

  1195. created to know

  1196. God.

  1197. Jesus says, eternal

  1198. life is knowing

  1199. me.

  1200. Has it ever struck

  1201. you that you need

  1202. to find God's

  1203. face in the

  1204. mission?

  1205. Because that's

  1206. where God meets

  1207. us.

  1208. Because after all,

  1209. God is a

  1210. missionary God.

  1211. When he wants to

  1212. bless Abraham, he

  1213. sends him halfway

  1214. across the known

  1215. world.

  1216. God's a

  1217. missionary God.

  1218. You will meet

  1219. him in the

  1220. mission.

  1221. God's a

  1222. missionary God.

  1223. The father sent

  1224. the son.

  1225. And the son sent

  1226. the spirit.

  1227. And the spirit

  1228. sends the church.

  1229. And there in the

  1230. sending, in the

  1231. going, God meets

  1232. us.

  1233. So friends, as we

  1234. conclude, is there a

  1235. turning point for you

  1236. in this passage?

  1237. Perhaps the

  1238. turning point is to

  1239. see that God really

  1240. does love you.

  1241. And that in Jesus,

  1242. he's done everything

  1243. to bring you home

  1244. and accept you.

  1245. Perhaps the

  1246. turning point is to

  1247. stop trusting in

  1248. your own self and

  1249. your own accomplishments

  1250. and to take the

  1251. departure of faith in

  1252. Christ and to make

  1253. him the center of

  1254. your life and strike

  1255. out on the

  1256. pilgrimage that he's

  1257. calling you to.

  1258. you.

  1259. Perhaps the

  1260. turning point is for

1261. you to hold on in

1262. the midst of trial, to

  1263. keep putting one foot

  1264. in front of the

  1265. other.

  1266. Perhaps the

  1267. turning point is to

  1268. join the mission, to

  1269. find out how the

  1270. blessing of God is

  1271. meant to flow through

  1272. you to others.

  1273. But let us be

  1274. encouraged by the

  1275. last verse of our

  1276. passage.

  1277. The turning point for

  1278. Abraham, the

  1279. point of his

  1280. spiritual departure

  1281. came when he was

  1282. 75 years old.

1283. You see, it is never

  1284. too late to begin.

  1285. No matter how long

  1286. you've spent searching,

  1287. no matter how many

  1288. detours or mistakes

  1289. your life has made,

  1290. today can be the

  1291. turning point.

  1292. The Lord called

  1293. Abraham and promised

  1294. him blessing.

  1295. And in Christ,

  1296. through his spirit, he

  1297. calls us today as

  1298. well.

  1299. Let's pray.

  1300. Lord Jesus, we ask

  1301. that you would meet

1302. us as we come to

  1303. your table and help

  1304. us by your Holy

  1305. Spirit to make the

  1306. departures that we

1307. need to make so that

1308. we might live in line

1309. with the truth of this

  1310. great blessing that

  1311. you've given to us.

  1312. Amen.

  1313. Amen.
