  1. I have a question for all of you.

  2. How many of you like to go to the back of the book and read the last chapter to know how it ends?

  3. You don't have to raise your hands.

  4. I'm not going to out you.

  5. But I know there are some of you.

  6. Usually, I prefer to let the story unfold, allowing the author and the storyteller to unfurl the movement of the drama.

  7. To see where, to feel the tension points as it unfolds.

  8. Looking forward, always, to the end.

  9. To see how it will resolve or not resolve, depending on how dystopian your novel is.

  10. But the one Bible that I like to read, or the one book that I like to read the end of, is the Bible, however.

  11. Because it answers all the questions like, where is this all going?

  12. And what will the end of the world be like?

  13. And where do I fit into all of that?

  14. When you look at the book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, this was a book written, now 2,000 years ago, written to the church in Rome, suffering, persecution, and trial.

  15. Going through a hard time when Christianity was not accepted and where people believed false things about them.

  16. And where they suffered cruelly and terribly.

  17. They were asking the questions, whose kingdom will really reign?

  18. God's or Caesar's?

  19. Who really has the greater power?

  20. The gospel or Rome?

  21. God's or Caesar's?

  22. And what will become of us?

  23. Because it sure feels like we're losing and dying.

  24. Those may be feelings that connect with your life as well.

  25. You may be facing trials in your own life that make you feel like you're losing and dying and wondering.

  26. Is there a God who can help me?

  27. Is his power great enough to actually rescue me from my current circumstances?

  28. Some of you may be walking through trials like that right now.

  29. Some of them, some of you are not.

  30. You're in a good place.

  31. And yet to know these truths is to prepare you for inevitably the time that will come when you will walk through hard times.

  32. And hard trials.

  33. Personally, as I've thought through, as I've prepared this sermon, I've been encouraged to think through the last eight years of my own life.

  34. As I've walked through my late wife's, Brandy's diagnosis of cancer, treatment, her going home to be with the Lord a few years ago.

  35. There certainly have been times when I couldn't see whose power was greater.

  36. I couldn't see the goodness in the moment.

  37. There certainly are times when I thought, I don't know how I can make it through.

  38. And yet, it's the truths of the book of Revelation that kept me going.

  39. To know the end has carried me through to this point.

  40. And continues to carry me through today.

  41. And I hope that this will be true for you as well.

  42. So we're going to turn today to the book of Revelation.

  43. We're going to turn to chapter 21.

  44. That's page, I brought my bulletin this time so I remember.

  45. 977.

  46. Turn to page 977 in your pew Bible.

  47. And if you have your own Bible, that's great.

  48. If you didn't bring one, pick up that pew Bible today.

  49. Because we're going to be flipping around a little bit.

  50. We're going to read a passage.

  51. But we're going to be reading a few passages in the near vicinity of that as well.

  52. And I'd love to have you be able to read along with me.

  53. And you may be wondering, why are we doing this?

  54. Why are we talking about Revelation and the end of the Bible?

  55. Because we've been preaching for this fall on the book of Genesis and the book of beginnings.

  56. And how God began the world and his purposes in creating it.

  57. And what we want to do is to show you how the book of Genesis sets up this long storyline.

  58. And we're going to skip to the end and read in Revelation 21.

  59. About how God ties up some major themes that he's raised in the series this fall.

  60. We're going to learn about what's the end of creation.

  61. Where is this all going?

  62. We're going to learn about the reality of sin and judgment.

  63. And where is that going to end?

  64. And we're going to learn about the fate of humanity.

  65. And this is what we're going to see as we look at Revelation.

  66. Revelation as the capstone of our series on the book of Genesis.

  67. So that's where we're going.

  68. And that's what we're doing this morning.

  69. So let's go ahead and read together Revelation chapter 21 verses 1 through 8.

    Revelation 21:1–8

  70. Revelation chapter 21 verses 1 through 8.

    Revelation 21:1–8

  71. The dwelling place of God is with man.

  72. He will dwell with them and they will be his people.

  73. And God himself will be with them as their God.

  74. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

  75. And death shall be no more.

  76. Neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore.

  77. For the former things have passed away.

  78. And he who is seated on the throne said,

  79. Behold, I am making all things new.

  80. Also he said, write this down for these words are trustworthy and true.

  81. And he said to me, it is done.

  82. I am the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end.

  83. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

  84. The one who conquers will have this heritage.

  85. And I will be his God and he will be my son.

  86. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable.

  87. As for the murderers, the sexually immoral.

  88. Sorcerers, idolaters and all liars.

  89. Their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur.

  90. Which is the second death.

  91. Will you pray with me?

  92. Lord, I praise you this morning for your word.

  93. Lord, for how you inspired writers throughout decades and centuries to reveal yourself.

  94. Lord, how these voices from different times and places testify about you.

  95. And what kind of God you are.

  96. Lord, I pray this morning that you would help us to see the beauty of you in all that you are.

  97. And Lord, the wonderful gift that it is to have the Bible to know you.

  98. God, I pray for your help this morning that you might give me clarity of thought and of speech.

  99. And Lord, for all of us that our hearts would be soft and receptive.

  100. That as your spirit, Lord, works in us today.

  101. That we would hear, Lord, and apply your word.

  102. Jesus, we ask these things in your name.

  103. Amen.

  104. Amen.

  105. Amen.

  106. So as we look at these eight verses as representative of a bit of there's actually about three chapters here where there's a lot going on.

  107. And we spared you a long reading of apocalyptic literature.

  108. Which has lots of really interesting and fascinating and sometimes distracting imagery.

  109. We're going to try to focus on these three grand themes of Genesis and how they work themselves out in Revelation.

  110. And the first thing that we see is what happens with creation.

  111. Creation will be healed.

  112. Remember what we saw in Genesis.

  113. That God began with a watery chaos.

  114. And he took this watery chaos and he brought it into a form.

  115. He separated out.

  116. Remember night and day.

  117. Land and sea.

  118. Sky and earth.

  119. He separated these things out to give form.

  120. And then he filled that form with life.

  121. Life in the sun and the moon and the sky.

  122. And life with plants and animals on the land and in the air and on the sea.

  123. And finally the pinnacle of life being humanity created in God's image.

  124. And yet then we see that this creation was cursed by the fall of man and the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the garden.

  125. And so we wonder what happens.

  126. Because we've known nothing less than this our whole lives.

  127. We have known nothing less than a cursed creation.

  128. Where work is hard.

  129. And where the world we live in is full of sickness and death.

  130. Of decay and disease.

  131. Of the second law of thermodynamics for heaven's sakes.

  132. That we tend towards chaos.

  133. Will it ever be good again?

  134. Is the question that we ask about creation.

  135. And Revelation steps in.

  136. And in Revelation 21.1 it says.

  137. This is the Apostle John receiving these visions from the Lord and writing them down.

  138. He says,

  139. What we see is that God rebuilds the forms anew.

  140. And the forms are different.

  141. Isn't it interesting?

  142. There is no sea.

  143. There is no watery chaos to be conquered anymore.

  144. In the eternal state there will be a world that will have this perfect form.

  145. That could never go back.

  146. And not only will there be no sea.

  147. As you see in verse 2.

  148. But also as we look further.

  149. If you want to look down chapter 21 verses 23 and following.

  150. It talks about the fact there will be no sun.

  151. And there will be no moon.

  152. And it says that there will be no more night.

  153. In chapter 22 verse 5.

  154. And part of what we need to see is that the normal rhythms of life.

  155. That God had created in the original form.

  156. Are not only going to be made new.

  157. They're going to be made new in a greater way.

  158. Because now instead of those things.

  159. Instead of a watery chaos or a sea.

  160. There will be a river of life.

  161. Flowing through the place where God's people will live.

  162. And instead of there being a sun and a moon in the sky.

  163. There will be God himself.

  164. And he will be the light.

  165. That will light them in their lives.

  166. And this is the eternal state that we see.

  167. That God is renewing and making even greater these forms.

  168. So there will be no more days.

  169. But eternity.

  170. But these aren't just forms for their own sake.

  171. But they're forms for the flourishing of life.

  172. And so you see in verse 6 of the passage we read in 21.6.

  173. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

  174. The invitation for all to come and to drink from God who is the source of all life.

  175. And who in this new creation has created a river that will never stop flowing.

  176. And a river that will always have life abundantly there.

  177. And as you look ahead.

  178. Look with me at the beginning of chapter 22 really quickly.

  179. Verses 1 and 2.

  180. There's a river of the water of life bright as crystal flowing from the throne of God.

  181. And the lamb.

  182. And through the middle of the...

  183. It's flowing through the middle of the street of the city.

  184. And also on either side of the river.

  185. The tree of life with its 12 kinds of fruit yielding each...

  186. Yielding its fruit each month.

  187. And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

  188. Do you remember the tree of life that God had to guard, block off from sinful humanity?

  189. Because of their rebellion against him?

  190. The tree of life that they might have eaten in the garden and enjoyed life forever but didn't?

  191. Because of their rebellion?

  192. In the new heavens and the new earth.

  193. God creates a place where the tree of life lines the river of life.

  194. And it bears fruit in every season.

  195. This is where the apocalyptic imagery...

  196. We need to be a little careful to not overdo it.

  197. Because I just said there are no seasons.

  198. And now there are seasons.

  199. Because there are 12 months, right?

  200. Well, let's go with it.

  201. The apocalyptic literature, it's images.

  202. So what's the image trying to say?

  203. There will always be abundant fruit.

  204. There will always be a fruit that will feed the people who are there forever.

  205. And it will be a life-giving fruit.

  206. What had been barred off because of sin now is available for all who are in the people of God.

  207. And not only do we have life, but we see...

  208. Go back to chapter 21, verse 7.

  209. The second half of this.

  210. The one who conquers will have this heritage and I will be his God and he will be my son.

  211. And sonship here...

  212. Yes, it's a gendered term, but it has a positional force to it.

  213. You will be the precious, honored, firstborn in my family.

  214. That would have been understood in a traditional context.

  215. And we need to see that we're gathering it up.

  216. And we're saying that in God's son, Jesus, all of us, men and women, become his precious children.

  217. His precious sons and daughters.

  218. And his name will be written on our foreheads.

  219. That's what chapter 22, verse 4 tells us.

  220. That we will actually have God's name.

  221. He will...

  222. Again, imagery, right?

  223. He's not branding us.

  224. Imagery.

  225. That we...

  226. He will say, you are mine and I am yours forever.

  227. And we will finally have a family that we will not lose.

  228. And we will finally have a place to belong that we never had.

  229. We will be restored fully in the image of God, male and female, to be his people forever.

  230. This new creation is characterized by a remaking where life flourishes eternally, without failure, without end, and with greater glory.

  231. So what are we to make of this?

  232. How do we apply this to our life today?

  233. There are so many applications to these principles.

  234. But, you know, one of the ones that struck me was, sometimes I think we're afraid that heaven will be boring.

  235. That harps and clouds and people wearing long white robes just looks really bland and really vanilla.

  236. But what I want you to see is that what God is doing in recreating, making new the forms of his creation and the life-giving impulse is that we are going to experience life like we've never done it before.

  237. Think even of just the way we experience creation.

  238. Have you been in Teton National Park?

  239. Have you been in Teton National Park?

  240. And the warmth of the rays of the sun catch the tips of the snow-capped peaks in the morning?

  241. It's thrilling.

  242. Have you been in Teton National Park?

  243. Have you been in a place where you've been able to see, whether it's Florida or California or Hawaii or some other part of the world,

  244. where you've been able to watch the sun set over the ocean,

  245. and the sky light up with a brilliant chromatic hues,

  246. to be captivated by it?

  247. And maybe even closer to Earth, have you just walked Hamanasset Beach and looked out at the greatness of the ocean?

  248. Or hiked the hills in Chatsworth Hollow in the spring as the snow melt fills the streams?

  249. These are the little tastes of our creation now that thrill our hearts.

  250. Friends, we will only have this unending and with greater glory in heaven.

  251. The Grand Canyon is not boring, nor will heaven be boring for us.

  252. We've only tasted what is in store for us,

  253. only sensed the greater beauty that awaits.

  254. And it's not only us.

  255. Not just the natural world, but human creation.

  256. Have you ever thought of the interesting thing?

  257. God began his creation in a garden.

  258. But at the end, there's a city.

  259. And I think that part of that is to recognize that

  260. what God is doing is he's bringing his people together.

  261. It is from God for sure, but it is, there's a humanity.

  262. There's a beauty in what God is doing through human beings.

  263. In our capacity to be creative, to make beautiful things,

  264. and to have culture, and to have music,

  265. and to have all the different ways in which we taste eternity,

  266. even now in this fallen world.

  267. And so what we will experience,

  268. and the scripture isn't really detailed on this,

  269. so I'm going out a little bit on a limb here,

  270. but I think it's there that God is going to bring us into a place

  271. where we're going to, all the things that we taste now,

  272. we will get an overwhelming abundance of,

  273. and it will never grow old,

  274. and we will never grow tired of it,

  275. and its beauty will be satisfying,

  276. because it will be seen to be reflecting God

  277. in all of his beauty and glory,

  278. in all that we do.

  279. And all that reflects God in part now,

  280. we will see in full then.

  281. And so we're reminded of the words in 1 Corinthians 2,

  282. what no eye has seen, no ear has heard,

  283. nor has the heart of man imagined,

  284. what God has prepared for those who love him.

  285. Friends, the renewal of creation is going to be awesome,

  286. and we ought to be excited about it,

  287. and look forward to it.

  288. But it's not just that.

  289. It's not just a utopia to look forward to,

  290. because it also,

  291. Revelation also helps us understand

  292. what happens to sin,

  293. and judgment,

  294. and the fall.

  295. What we see is that judgment is complete,

  296. and sin is eradicated.

  297. Remember what we saw in Genesis 3,

  298. and following all the way through.

  299. Genesis 3 was the beginning.

  300. Sin entered the world

  301. through the disobedience of Adam and Eve.

  302. It entered the world,

  303. and it corrupted and broke everything.

  304. It broke God's relationship to man.

  305. It broke humanity's relationship to one another,

  306. male and female.

  307. It broke our relationship to creation,

  308. and all those ways.

  309. And so the stain and the curse of sin

  310. went everywhere.

  311. And when we saw from that,

  312. remember,

  313. with Cain and Abel,

  314. and then with Lamech,

  315. and then every purpose of man's heart

  316. was always only evil.

  317. Always.

  318. I think I added one in there,

  319. but that's the idea,

  320. right?

  321. In chapter 6,

  322. it got so bad

  323. that God judged the world

  324. with a flood

  325. that destroyed everybody

  326. so that he might remake humanity

  327. in hopes of starting over.

  328. And yet,

  329. three chapters later,

  330. they're building the Tower of Babel

  331. and thinking,

  332. that's a great idea.

  333. Why don't we exalt ourselves

  334. up to God

  335. in rebellion against him?

  336. And so we have this problem.

  337. Sin has persisted.

  338. And the stain of sin

  339. seems to be

  340. one that you can't get out.

  341. What will God do with that?

  342. Well,

  343. we see a couple of very hopeful things here.

  344. First,

  345. is that in chapter 21,

  346. verse 4,

  347. these beautiful words,

  348. we see that the curse

  349. and the stain of sin

  350. and the result of sin

  351. is reversed.

  352. Look with me at it.

  353. He will wipe away

  354. every tear from their eyes

  355. and death shall be no more.

  356. Neither shall there be mourning

  357. nor crying

  358. nor pain of any more,

  359. nor pain anymore

  360. for the former things

  361. have passed away.

  362. Friends,

  363. the older I get,

  364. the worse death seems.

  365. And yet,

  366. the older I get,

  367. the harder life seems.

  368. It's a really terrible thing

  369. to put those things together.

  370. Because you realize

  371. that sin and death

  372. is not the way

  373. it was supposed to be.

  374. Humanity was not made for this.

  375. And yet,

  376. they are such a constant presence

  377. in our lives.

  378. Some of you are 22

  379. and really have tasted

  380. little of this.

  381. Praise God for that.

  382. Enjoy it.

  383. And be prepared

  384. for the fact

  385. that that will end.

  386. I wish I could tell you

  387. something better.

  388. I can't.

  389. Sorry.

  390. Sorry.

  391. Begin to put these truths

  392. into,

  393. and these hopes

  394. into your heart now.

  395. for when the reality

  396. of sin

  397. and the reality

  398. of death

  399. hits you,

  400. you will be prepared

  401. for them.

  402. The curse is reversed.

  403. There will be

  404. no more sickness.

  405. There will be

  406. no more disease.

  407. There will be

  408. no agonizing death.

  409. There will be

  410. no tragic accidents.

  411. There will be

  412. no more death.

  413. And there will be

  414. no more mourning.

  415. There will be

  416. no more weeping

  417. and crying.

  418. There will be

  419. no more hurt

  420. or pain.

  421. Because all

  422. of those things

  423. that are so

  424. much a part

  425. of our lives today

  426. are the fruit

  427. of sin.

  428. And when God

  429. makes the world new,

  430. those things

  431. will have passed

  432. away.

  433. in chapters 22

  434. verse 3

  435. it says,

  436. no longer

  437. will there be

  438. anything

  439. accursed.

  440. So all

  441. the ways

  442. that the fallenness

  443. has worked

  444. its way out

  445. into our world

  446. with broken

  447. societal systems

  448. and broken

  449. relationships

  450. and broken

  451. bodies

  452. and broken

  453. ecology

  454. and all

  455. the broken

  456. things

  457. of the world,

  458. no longer

  459. will they be

  460. there.

  461. and even

  462. more than that,

  463. even in the

  464. spiritual realm,

  465. the liar

  466. and the deceiver

  467. who wormed

  468. his way

  469. into the

  470. hearts of

  471. Adam and Eve

  472. in the garden,

  473. the great serpent

  474. who if you go

  475. back and you look

  476. in chapter 12

  477. is identified

  478. as Satan

  479. very clearly

  480. there.

  481. We see in the

  482. book of Revelation,

  483. I just didn't have

  484. time to give you

  485. this whole storyline,

  486. but we see in the

  487. book of Revelation

  488. that this enemy

  489. will be defeated.

  490. In chapter 20

  491. verse 10,

  492. Satan is finally

  493. defeated.

  494. He is pictured

  495. as a dragon

  496. and he is thrown

  497. into a lake

  498. of fire

  499. which is a picture

  500. of eternal

  501. judgment

  502. where there is

  503. no escape.

  504. And not only

  505. is Satan thrown

  506. in there,

  507. but in chapter 20

  508. verse 14,

  509. death and hell

  510. itself

  511. are also thrown

  512. into that lake

  513. of fire.

  514. What we know

  515. from this

  516. is that the

  517. enemies,

  518. the spiritual

  519. enemies of

  520. God's people

  521. who have sought

  522. to attack

  523. from the outside

  524. to turn

  525. God's people

  526. away,

  527. they are judged,

  528. they are condemned,

  529. and they are

  530. defeated.

  531. And they will

  532. no longer

  533. be a part

  534. of our world.

  535. God will

  536. remove

  537. the things

  538. that cause

  539. us harm.

  540. Now one of

  541. the sobering

  542. things about

  543. this,

  544. you probably

  545. noticed it

  546. because it's

  547. striking,

  548. verse 8,

  549. and this is

  550. repeated again

  551. later in

  552. chapter 22,

  553. verse,

  554. I didn't

  555. write this

  556. down,

  557. verse 15,

  558. twice in

  559. these two

  560. chapters with

  561. this grand

  562. vision,

  563. it says,

  564. but not all

  565. will be there

  566. because those

  567. who reject

  568. God,

  569. those who

  570. choose their

  571. sin and

  572. refuse

  573. to turn

  574. towards God,

  575. those who

  576. continue and

  577. make their

  578. life characterized

  579. by rebellion

  580. against God,

  581. they will

  582. not be in

  583. this place.

  584. They will

  585. not enjoy

  586. this new

  587. heaven and

  588. new earth

  589. and new

  590. Jerusalem.

  591. They will

  592. not drink

  593. from the

  594. river of

  595. life,

  596. nor taste

  597. the fruit

  598. from the

  599. tree of

  600. life.

  601. There is

  602. a judgment

  603. that is

  604. coming on

  605. all the

  606. earth,

  607. and it

  608. will be

  609. final.

  610. this is

  611. why the

  612. lake of

  613. fire and

  614. sulfur and

  615. the second

  616. death,

  617. this apocalyptic

  618. imagery is

  619. pointing ahead

  620. to this

  621. reality,

  622. that one

  623. day when

  624. God redeems

  625. the world,

  626. it will

  627. involve this

  628. judgment.

  629. It will

  630. involve

  631. ending sin,

  632. and for

  633. those who

  634. have made

  635. sin their

  636. marker,

  637. the thing

  638. that they

  639. embrace,

  640. they will

  641. be caught

  642. up in

  643. this judgment,

  644. and they

  645. will suffer

  646. that judgment,

  647. and it

  648. will be

  649. terrible.

  650. So we

  651. need to

  652. know that

  653. evil will

  654. not continue,

  655. and this

  656. is a good

  657. thing,

  658. friends.

  659. Though it

  660. is a

  661. sobering

  662. thing,

  663. it is a

  664. good thing,

  665. and many

  666. of you

  667. sitting here

  668. this morning

  669. know this.

  670. You know

  671. it's good

  672. when you

  673. watch your

  674. family members

  675. suffer from

  676. chronic pain,

  677. or addiction,

  678. or tragic

  679. accidents,

  680. when you

  681. watch life

  682. unravel in

  683. those you

  684. love,

  685. and you

  686. want the

  687. evil,

  688. and the

  689. sin,

  690. and the

  691. pain to

  692. end.

  693. some of

  694. you have

  695. endured

  696. injustice

  697. tragically

  698. in your

  699. own lives.

  700. You have

  701. been abused,

  702. and there's

  703. never been a

  704. recompense.

  705. There's never

  706. been a

  707. reckoning.

  708. Some of

  709. you look

  710. out in the

  711. world,

  712. and you

  713. look at the

  714. great

  715. suffering.

  716. You look

  717. at the

  718. persecution

  719. of the

  720. powerless,

  721. and the

  722. oppressed,

  723. and those

  724. that society

  725. counts is

  726. not worth

  727. it.

  728. And your

  729. heart cries

  730. out,

  731. how could

  732. this be?

  733. God,

  734. why won't

  735. you end

  736. this?

  737. And part

  738. of what

  739. Revelation

  740. tells us

  741. is that

  742. he will,

  743. and that

  744. he does.

  745. He will

  746. not allow

  747. the guilty

  748. to go

  749. unpunished,

  750. and he

  751. will end

  752. sin by

  753. justly

  754. judging

  755. all.

  756. the

  757. book of

  758. Revelation

  759. was written,

  760. it was

  761. written to

  762. people who

  763. were wondering

  764. these things

  765. too.

  766. As the

  767. corrupt nation

  768. of Rome

  769. got more

  770. flagrant in

  771. some of its

  772. corruption,

  773. and the

  774. church wondered,

  775. God,

  776. how long,

  777. how long

  778. will this

  779. last,

  780. how long

  781. will we

  782. suffer,

  783. the

  784. righteous,

  785. those who

  786. seek you

  787. and want

  788. to know

  789. you,

  790. while the

  791. world

  792. enjoys the

  793. pleasures of

  794. its sin.

  795. And Revelation

  796. reminds us,

  797. God will

  798. win.

  799. God will

  800. win in the

  801. end,

  802. and he

  803. will end

  804. the evil,

  805. and he

  806. will end

  807. the sin,

  808. and he

  809. will end

  810. all of

  811. the things

  812. that we

  813. rightly hate

  814. in this

  815. world because

  816. they are

  817. evil.

  818. And in

  819. his judgment,

  820. he will

  821. make it

  822. right.

  823. now we

  824. have to

  825. stop and

  826. think,

  827. how will

  828. he do

  829. this?

  830. How will

  831. he do

  832. this?

  833. Many of

  834. you know

  835. this story,

  836. but just,

  837. it's only

  838. hinted at

  839. here,

  840. it's not

  841. explained in

  842. Revelation

  843. 21 and

  844. 22,

  845. except that

  846. with God

  847. there is

  848. this one

  849. who is

  850. called

  851. the Lamb.

  852. And you

  853. go back

  854. to Revelation

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  855. chapter 5,

  856. and you

  857. see people

  858. worshiping

  859. this Lamb,

  860. worthy is

  861. the Lamb

  862. who was

  863. slain,

  864. for by

  865. your blood

  866. you ransomed

  867. people for

  868. God.

  869. We know

  870. that the

  871. Lamb is

  872. Jesus,

  873. and that

  874. his death

  875. is his

  876. death on

  877. the cross,

  878. and we

  879. know that

  880. this Lamb

  881. is God

  882. come to

  883. us.

  884. So Hebrews

  885. 2,

  886. 14 says

  887. this about

  888. him,

  889. therefore

  890. since the

  891. children,

  892. that is us,

  893. children of

  894. humanity,

  895. share in

  896. flesh and

  897. blood,

  898. he himself

  899. likewise

  900. partook the

  901. same things

  902. so that

  903. through death,

  904. that is

  905. through his

  906. death,

  907. he might

  908. destroy the

  909. one who has

  910. the power

  911. of death,

  912. that is

  913. Satan,

  914. that is

  915. the devil,

  916. and to

  917. deliver all

  918. those who

  919. through the

  920. fear of

  921. death were

  922. subject to

  923. a lifelong

  924. slavery.

  925. Jesus

  926. entered into

  927. the curse

  928. of humanity

  929. and the

  930. judgment of

  931. God upon

  932. the evil

  933. that our

  934. sin wreaks

  935. in this

  936. world.

  937. He entered

  938. in and

  939. took that

  940. for us

  941. so that

  942. all who

  943. are in

  944. him

  945. might be

  946. redeemed

  947. and ransomed

  948. out of

  949. this broken

  950. fallen world

  951. and into

  952. this ark,

  953. this savior,

  954. this,

  955. the promised

  956. one,

  957. so that

  958. all who

  959. are in

  960. Christ,

  961. as Daniel

  962. said earlier,

  963. there is

  964. no condemnation,

  965. but instead

  966. there is

  967. life.

  968. And this

  969. is the

  970. great divide,

  971. and on

  972. the last

  973. day,

  974. this will

  975. be the

  976. great and

  977. tragic

  978. divide.

  979. For those

  980. who are

  981. in Christ,

  982. they will

  983. go into

  984. eternity

  985. with God

  986. and enjoy

  987. life with

  988. God forever

  989. and all

  990. this beauty.

  991. but for

  992. those who

  993. are outside

  994. of Christ,

  995. it will

  996. be a

  997. terrible

  998. day,

  999. for the

  1000. hope of

  1001. redemption

  1002. will finally

  1003. extinguish

  1004. and be

  1005. no more.

  1006. Which is

  1007. why the

  1008. Bible

  1009. encourages

  1010. us,

  1011. today,

  1012. if you

  1013. hear his

  1014. voice,

  1015. turn to

  1016. him.

  1017. Today,

  1018. if you

  1019. have not

  1020. put your

  1021. faith in

  1022. Christ,

  1023. turn to

  1024. him today

  1025. while you

  1026. still can,

  1027. turn to

  1028. him and

  1029. find that

  1030. he is the

  1031. savior that

  1032. you've always

  1033. wanted,

  1034. that he is

  1035. the one who

  1036. can deal

  1037. with your

  1038. sin.

  1039. Give your

  1040. life to

  1041. him and

  1042. let him

  1043. free you.

  1044. For as

  1045. Revelations

  1046. 1.18 says,

  1047. he was given

  1048. the keys of

  1049. death in

  1050. Haiti under

  1051. his control

  1052. so that he

  1053. may defeat

  1054. his enemies

  1055. and give

  1056. freedom to

  1057. those who

  1058. are in

  1059. him.

  1060. So,

  1061. friends,

  1062. when you

  1063. face your

  1064. struggle,

  1065. when you

  1066. struggle to

  1067. see the

  1068. pain and

  1069. the evil

  1070. in the

  1071. world,

  1072. know that

  1073. God has

  1074. triumphed

  1075. over it.

  1076. Look to

  1077. the cross

  1078. and to

  1079. the empty

  1080. tomb.

  1081. You may

  1082. not understand

  1083. why your

  1084. particular shape

  1085. of evil has

  1086. come into

  1087. your life.

  1088. You may

  1089. not understand

  1090. why you've

  1091. had to

  1092. suffer these

  1093. certain things,

  1094. but know that

  1095. they will not

  1096. have the

  1097. last word

  1098. in your

  1099. life.

  1100. And when

  1101. you look

  1102. to the

  1103. cross and

  1104. when you

  1105. look to

  1106. the empty

  1107. tomb,

  1108. there is

  1109. hope.

  1110. The victory

  1111. is future,

  1112. but it is

  1113. certain for

  1114. God's people.

  1115. Which leads us

  1116. into the last

  1117. question,

  1118. what about the

  1119. fate of

  1120. humanity?

  1121. As we've

  1122. seen in

  1123. Genesis 1

  1124. through 12,

  1125. starting in

  1126. verse 3,

  1127. humanity has

  1128. been unerringly

  1129. lurching towards

  1130. sin and

  1131. deserving of

  1132. judgment.

  1133. Though there

  1134. have been

  1135. multiple times

  1136. or opportunities

  1137. to turn back

  1138. to God,

  1139. only a few

  1140. have done

  1141. so.

  1142. And invariably,

  1143. all of humanity

  1144. has moved

  1145. away.

  1146. So what is

  1147. going to

  1148. happen?

  1149. At the

  1150. end of

  1151. chapter 11,

  1152. remember the

  1153. Tower of

  1154. Babel?

  1155. God has

  1156. scattered the

  1157. people and

  1158. given them

  1159. different

  1160. languages to

  1161. confuse them so

  1162. they can't

  1163. unite in

  1164. their sin

  1165. against God

  1166. and in

  1167. rebellion.

  1168. So now the

  1169. people,

  1170. humanity,

  1171. are scattered,

  1172. confused,

  1173. at odds with

  1174. God and with

  1175. one another.

  1176. What will

  1177. God do

  1178. here?

  1179. Well,

  1180. what we will

  1181. see is that

  1182. God's people

  1183. will be

  1184. gathered again.

  1185. Look with

  1186. me in

  1187. Revelation 21,

    Revelation 21:2

  1188. verses 2 and

  1189. 3.

  1190. I saw the

  1191. holy city in

  1192. New Jerusalem

  1193. coming down

  1194. out of

  1195. heaven from

  1196. God,

  1197. prepared as

  1198. a bride

  1199. adorned for

  1200. her husband.

  1201. And I

  1202. heard a loud

  1203. voice from

  1204. the throne

  1205. saying,

  1206. behold,

  1207. the dwelling

  1208. place,

  1209. which is the

  1210. same word as

  1211. tabernacle in

  1212. case you

  1213. want to

  1214. know.

  1215. The dwelling

  1216. place of

  1217. God is

  1218. with

  1219. humanity.

  1220. And he

  1221. will dwell

  1222. with them

  1223. and they

  1224. will be

  1225. his people.

  1226. And God

  1227. himself will

  1228. be with

  1229. them as

  1230. their God.

  1231. again,

  1232. God is

  1233. creating a

  1234. form for

  1235. humanity to

  1236. flourish and

  1237. it is a

  1238. city,

  1239. the holy

  1240. city,

  1241. Jerusalem,

  1242. remade

  1243. new and

  1244. not built

  1245. up from

  1246. the bottom

  1247. to try to

  1248. reach God

  1249. but coming

  1250. down from

  1251. heaven.

  1252. God provides

  1253. for us the

  1254. city that we

  1255. longed for but

  1256. couldn't make

  1257. on our own.

  1258. And in

  1259. this city,

  1260. God restores

  1261. the intimacy

  1262. of humanity

  1263. in the garden

  1264. where they

  1265. walked with

  1266. God in

  1267. the cool

  1268. of the

  1269. shade.

  1270. And where

  1271. the great

  1272. gift of

  1273. marriage,

  1274. the union

  1275. of male

  1276. and female

  1277. in this

  1278. picture of

  1279. intimacy

  1280. is now

  1281. to be seen

  1282. to be this,

  1283. the fulfillment

  1284. of that is

  1285. the great

  1286. intimacy,

  1287. the union

  1288. of God

  1289. and his

  1290. people

  1291. forever.

  1292. And we

  1293. will be

  1294. known

  1295. fully

  1296. and we

  1297. will be

  1298. loved

  1299. completely

  1300. and we

  1301. will love

  1302. God

  1303. and it

  1304. will bring

  1305. us

  1306. great

  1307. joy.

  1308. The

  1309. garden

  1310. city

  1311. of this

  1312. new

  1313. Jerusalem

  1314. will be

  1315. the place

  1316. where we

  1317. as humanity

  1318. as God's

  1319. people,

  1320. those in

  1321. Christ,

  1322. will enjoy

  1323. an intimacy

  1324. with God

  1325. greater than

  1326. we can

  1327. imagine.

  1328. And it's

  1329. striking in

  1330. verse 22

  1331. of chapter 21

  1332. it says,

  1333. there is no

  1334. more temple,

  1335. right?

  1336. For the

  1337. Jews in

  1338. the Old

  1339. Testament,

  1340. the temple

  1341. was the

  1342. one place

  1343. where they

  1344. could go

  1345. and say

  1346. God was

  1347. here.

  1348. And in

  1349. the new

  1350. place,

  1351. New Jerusalem,

  1352. there will

  1353. be no

  1354. temple

  1355. because they

  1356. don't have

  1357. to go to

  1358. a building

  1359. to find

  1360. God

  1361. because God

  1362. himself

  1363. will be

  1364. among

  1365. them.

  1366. The

  1367. greater

  1368. glory of

  1369. this city

  1370. garden

  1371. temple.

  1372. Draw all

  1373. those lines

  1374. together

  1375. throughout all

  1376. of scripture

  1377. to say

  1378. this is

  1379. what it's

  1380. heading

  1381. for.

  1382. This

  1383. incredible

  1384. place

  1385. where God's

  1386. people will

  1387. be gathered

  1388. to be

  1389. with God.

  1390. And it

  1391. will have

  1392. this incredible

  1393. diversity.

  1394. One of the

  1395. remarkable

  1396. things about

  1397. what God

  1398. did at the

  1399. Tower of

  1400. Babel

  1401. is as he

  1402. scattered

  1403. people,

  1404. he created

  1405. diversity.

  1406. He created

  1407. diversity of

  1408. nations and

  1409. tribes and

  1410. tongues.

  1411. tongues.

  1412. And then

  1413. he let

  1414. them grow

  1415. into the

  1416. richness.

  1417. Look around

  1418. this room,

  1419. look around

  1420. this city,

  1421. look around

  1422. the world

  1423. that we

  1424. live in.

  1425. God has

  1426. created a

  1427. humanity,

  1428. even in

  1429. its fallenness,

  1430. it has this

  1431. incredible

  1432. richness and

  1433. diversity.

  1434. And what

  1435. God is doing

  1436. at the end

  1437. of days is

  1438. gathering those

  1439. people back

  1440. together.

  1441. This is what

  1442. Revelation

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  1443. chapter 7

  1444. looks to.

  1445. And then I

  1446. saw people

  1447. from every

  1448. tribe and

  1449. tongue and

  1450. nation gathered

  1451. around the

  1452. throne,

  1453. worshiping God

  1454. forever.

  1455. And the

  1456. glory of Adam

  1457. and Eve,

  1458. intimate with

  1459. God in the

  1460. garden in the

  1461. beginning,

  1462. is now

  1463. multiplied and

  1464. magnified by

  1465. us who

  1466. will get to

  1467. gather with

  1468. him.

  1469. in all the

  1470. different

  1471. backgrounds that

  1472. we have,

  1473. all the

  1474. different

  1475. languages,

  1476. all the

  1477. richness of

  1478. the culture

  1479. that we

  1480. bring,

  1481. and we

  1482. bring them

  1483. and we

  1484. lay them

  1485. at the

  1486. feet of

  1487. our king

  1488. and our

  1489. God at

  1490. his throne

  1491. and we

  1492. honor and

  1493. worship him.

  1494. And we

  1495. will see him

  1496. face to

  1497. face.

  1498. Remember

  1499. Moses up on

  1500. the mountain?

  1501. He couldn't

  1502. see God

  1503. face to

  1504. face.

  1505. And live

  1506. because of

  1507. his sin.

  1508. But when

  1509. sin is gone,

  1510. we can see

  1511. God face

  1512. to face.

  1513. And what

  1514. joy that

  1515. will be.

  1516. Maybe you

  1517. know what

  1518. it's like to

  1519. be far away

  1520. from a

  1521. loved one

  1522. for a while.

  1523. And yeah,

  1524. it's nice you

  1525. can now

  1526. WhatsApp them

  1527. or FaceTime

  1528. them.

  1529. but to

  1530. actually see

  1531. them face

  1532. to face.

  1533. What joy

  1534. it is to

  1535. be in

  1536. the presence

  1537. of the

  1538. one that

  1539. you love.

  1540. The

  1541. intimacy,

  1542. the union,

  1543. the connection

  1544. that we

  1545. have with

  1546. those.

  1547. This is what

  1548. we get with

  1549. God.

  1550. And when

  1551. you're

  1552. reunited with

  1553. that loved

  1554. one,

  1555. at least for a

  1556. while,

  1557. you think,

  1558. this is the

  1559. best ever.

  1560. And then in

  1561. our fallenness,

  1562. we get bored

  1563. and we go on

  1564. with other

  1565. stuff.

  1566. But in

  1567. heaven,

  1568. we won't

  1569. get bored

  1570. because we

  1571. will be

  1572. face to

  1573. face with

  1574. the infinite

  1575. God.

  1576. And we

  1577. will worship

  1578. him.

  1579. And we

  1580. will bask

  1581. in his

  1582. glory and

  1583. we will

  1584. enjoy his

  1585. creation.

  1586. And we

  1587. will live

  1588. this rich

  1589. life

  1590. forever.

  1591. So God

  1592. will gather

  1593. his people

  1594. and he

  1595. will dwell

  1596. with them

  1597. and they

  1598. will be

  1599. his people

  1600. and he

  1601. will be

  1602. their God.

  1603. When we

  1604. feel like

  1605. we're losing

  1606. and when we

  1607. feel like

  1608. we're dying,

  1609. this is a

  1610. great promise.

  1611. Because even

  1612. if we die

  1613. in this life

  1614. and in this

  1615. world,

  1616. we know

  1617. that that

  1618. is where

  1619. we are

  1620. going in

  1621. Christ.

  1622. That God

  1623. will gather

  1624. his people

  1625. together.

  1626. And what a

  1627. glorious day

  1628. that will

  1629. be.

  1630. Almost broke

  1631. out in a

  1632. song there.

  1633. When we

  1634. all get to

  1635. heaven,

  1636. the day of

  1637. rejoicing it

  1638. will be.

  1639. When we all

  1640. see Jesus,

  1641. we'll dance

  1642. and shout

  1643. the victory.

  1644. Sing and

  1645. shout?

  1646. I don't know.

  1647. It's close

  1648. enough.

  1649. So friends,

  1650. how do we

  1651. finish this?

  1652. How do we

  1653. wrap up this

  1654. sermon?

  1655. How do we

  1656. live now?

  1657. First,

  1658. we need to

  1659. cling to

  1660. Jesus because

  1661. all these

  1662. hopes and

  1663. all these

  1664. promises are

  1665. tied to

  1666. being in

  1667. him.

  1668. And with

  1669. great joy,

  1670. we know that

  1671. he will

  1672. cling to us.

  1673. But he

  1674. calls us

  1675. over and

  1676. over again.

  1677. Turn to

  1678. him.

  1679. Choose this

  1680. day whom you

  1681. will serve.

  1682. believe in

  1683. me.

  1684. Follow me.

  1685. Pick up

  1686. your cross.

  1687. Cling to

  1688. Jesus.

  1689. Hold on to

  1690. him through

  1691. the hardest

  1692. things of

  1693. life.

  1694. When you

  1695. feel like

  1696. it's not

  1697. worth living,

  1698. when you

  1699. feel like

  1700. all you're

  1701. doing is

  1702. losing and

  1703. dying,

  1704. turn to

  1705. him.

  1706. You will

  1707. only know

  1708. him in

  1709. part in

  1710. this life,

  1711. but seek

  1712. to know

  1713. him more

  1714. and more.

  1715. read his

  1716. word so

  1717. that you

  1718. might know

  1719. him more.

  1720. But also

  1721. gather as

  1722. his people.

  1723. Because

  1724. recognize,

  1725. friends,

  1726. that this is

  1727. the down

  1728. payment of

  1729. heaven right

  1730. here.

  1731. What we're

  1732. doing right

  1733. now, this

  1734. is why people

  1735. have said this

  1736. is the most

  1737. important thing

  1738. that happens

  1739. in all of

  1740. the earth.

  1741. Not what

  1742. happens in

  1743. Washington,

  1744. D.C.

  1745. or what

  1746. happens in

  1747. New York

  1748. City or in

  1749. Beijing or in

  1750. London or

  1751. wherever.

  1752. forever.

  1753. But this,

  1754. the gathering

  1755. of God's

  1756. people is

  1757. the most

  1758. important thing

  1759. because this

  1760. is the down

  1761. payment of

  1762. what will

  1763. be eternal.

  1764. When we

  1765. gather together,

  1766. as imperfect

  1767. as it is,

  1768. and it is

  1769. really imperfect,

  1770. you guys may

  1771. feel that,

  1772. it is not,

  1773. but this is

  1774. the place where

  1775. we get to

  1776. taste the

  1777. gathering of

  1778. God's people.

  1779. as we look

  1780. around,

  1781. recognize that

  1782. these will be

  1783. the people that

  1784. you will worship

  1785. God with for

  1786. all eternity.

  1787. And you will

  1788. look at one

  1789. another and say

  1790. brother and

  1791. sister and

  1792. know that in a

  1793. much deeper

  1794. way than you

  1795. do right now.

  1796. So value it,

  1797. treasure it,

  1798. anticipate it,

  1799. risk investing

  1800. in it.

  1801. It's worthwhile.

  1802. And hold on

  1803. to hope,

  1804. friends.

  1805. In this world

  1806. you will have

  1807. tribulation,

  1808. but I have

  1809. overcome the

  1810. world,

  1811. said Jesus.

  1812. There is a

  1813. greater glory

  1814. awaiting those

  1815. who are in

  1816. Christ.

  1817. The one who

  1818. came and said,

  1819. behold, I am

  1820. making all

  1821. things new.

  1822. Let's pray.

  1823. Lord, thank

  1824. you for this

  1825. word.

  1826. Lord, thank

  1827. you for the

  1828. vision that

  1829. you have given

  1830. John, a

  1831. glimpse even,

  1832. for there are

  1833. no words to

  1834. describe the

  1835. fullness of the

  1836. beauty and the

  1837. richness and the

  1838. glory that we

  1839. will have with

  1840. you in eternity.

  1841. Lord, I pray

  1842. this morning that

  1843. you would wean

  1844. our hearts from

  1845. our hope being

  1846. in this life

  1847. only, but

  1848. Lord, that

  1849. because you

  1850. are a risen

  1851. savior, that

  1852. we would set

  1853. our hope on

  1854. heaven, set

  1855. our hope on

  1856. these eternal

  1857. realities that

  1858. are yet to

  1859. come.

  1860. And Lord, that

  1861. by doing that

  1862. you might give

  1863. us hope to

  1864. persevere in the

  1865. present, to

  1866. cling to you

  1867. and to wait

  1868. for you and

  1869. trust ourselves

  1870. to you.

  1871. Lord, thank

  1872. you for this.

  1873. thank you that

  1874. you are the

  1875. overcoming one,

  1876. that you are

  1877. the conquering

  1878. king, that

  1879. you will be,

  1880. Lord, our

  1881. God, and we

  1882. will be your

  1883. people.

  1884. We pray this in

  1885. Jesus' name.

  1886. Amen.
