  1. Matthew chapter 1, we'll be reading verses 18 through 25.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  2. As we're turning there, let me pray, and then we'll read together.

  3. Father, thank you for your word.

  4. Thank you for this season that we can remember and celebrate your first coming.

  5. We pray that as we do that, that we would at the same time live with longing and hope

  6. for your return and look forward to the day when you will come and make all things new.

  7. Bless us as we look into this passage this morning, and we pray that you would speak

  8. to us and help us to be strengthened and equipped.

  9. In Jesus' name we pray.

  10. Amen.

  11. Matthew chapter 1, beginning at verse 18.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  12. Now, the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  13. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to

  14. be with child from the Holy Spirit.

  15. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to

  16. divorce her quietly.

  17. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

  18. Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife.

  19. For that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  20. She will bear a son.

  21. And you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

  22. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

  23. But behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.

  24. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  25. When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

  26. He took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son, and he called his name Jesus.

  27. One of the most profound and awe-inspiring experiences that a human being can have is to see a new human

  28. being come into the world.

  29. From the moment of realization she's pregnant, through the months of preparation, as the baby

  30. gradually develops to the climactic moment of birth, there is a sense of mystery and wonder

  31. at the fragility and the beauty of a new human life.

  32. Now, sometimes the birth of a particular child is seen as particularly unusual or providential.

  33. I think of children born to couples in their mid-forties who thought they were past the age of childbearing,

  34. or couples who for years thought they were infertile, yet conceived multiple children,

  35. or children who were born several weeks premature and yet survived with the aid of modern technology.

  36. I think of a child who, by God's grace, survived an attempt to abort him,

  37. or children born after a previous miscarriage or stillbirth.

  38. But the reality is not only in unusual circumstances, but every time that any child is born into the world,

  39. something amazing and extraordinary has happened.

  40. Most things that have happened over the last ten years I have long since forgotten,

  41. but I have distinct memories of watching each of my children be born

  42. and of the circumstances surrounding their birth.

  43. It's something you don't quickly forget.

  44. Now, sometimes we are surprised and rightly grieved

  45. when someone has a miscarriage or stillbirth,

  46. but perhaps we should be even more amazed

  47. every time that a baby is born,

  48. considering all the perils that attend the development of the tiniest human lives

  49. from the moment of conception onwards.

  50. This morning we're looking at Matthew's account of the conception and birth of Jesus.

  51. And Matthew wants us to know that of all the unusual and providential births

  52. that have ever occurred in human history,

  53. the birth of Jesus was the most unusual of all.

  54. Matthew wants us to know that of all the people that have ever occurred in the world.

  55. Matthew wants us to see that the conception and birth of Jesus was not just unusual,

  56. not just providential, not just amazing and awe-inspiring,

  57. but it was positively supernatural and miraculous.

  58. Verse 18 begins,

  59. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  60. That word translated birth is the same word that in verse 1 is translated genealogy.

  61. It is the Greek word Genesis,

  62. what we call the first book of the Bible.

  63. It could also be translated origin, right?

  64. In chapter, in verse 1, the book of the origin of Jesus Christ.

  65. Verse 18, the origin of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  66. So Matthew's telling us in this chapter about Jesus' origins.

  67. Now last week, the first half of the chapter in the genealogy,

  68. we saw Jesus' human origins.

  69. He was the son of David, the son of Abraham,

  70. descended from the genealogical line of the people of Israel

  71. to whom God had made his promise long ago.

  72. That a descendant of Abraham would be the means through which

  73. all the nations of the world would be blessed.

  74. That a son of David would arise as a righteous and victorious and merciful ruler.

  75. So we saw Jesus' human origins last week,

  76. but in the second half of the chapter,

  77. what we're looking at today,

  78. Matthew emphasizes Jesus' divine origin.

  79. Verse 18, now or but,

  80. the origin of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  81. Matthew's saying he's making a contrast

  82. between all the other births recorded in the genealogy,

  83. all 42 of them in the chapter 1,

  84. and the birth of Jesus.

  85. If you look at the genealogy, it follows a typical pattern.

  86. A is the father of B.

  87. B is the father of C.

  88. C is the father of D.

  89. In some unusual circumstances,

  90. the mother is also mentioned.

  91. But at the end of the genealogy,

  92. in verse 16, Matthew breaks the pattern.

  93. Verse 16 says,

  94. Jacob, the father of Joseph,

  95. the husband of Mary,

  96. of whom Jesus was born,

  97. who is called Christ.

  98. That word Christ is the same word for Messiah.

  99. So Matthew carefully avoids saying

  100. that Joseph was the biological father of Jesus,

  101. even though the rest of his narrative

  102. in chapters 1 and 2

  103. focuses far more on the character of Joseph

  104. than on Mary.

  105. So in verse 16,

  106. he's alerting us to something unusual.

  107. Then verse 18, he picks up that thread.

  108. It happened in this way.

  109. How exactly did Jesus originate?

  110. In a supernatural and miraculous way.

  111. And throughout the second half of the chapter,

  112. Matthew intentionally points out

  113. Jesus' divine and supernatural origin.

  114. Verse 18,

  115. Before Mary and Joseph came together,

  116. Mary was found to be with child

  117. from the Holy Spirit.

  118. Verse 20,

  119. The angel says to Joseph,

  120. That which is conceived in her

  121. is from the Holy Spirit.

  122. Verse 23,

  123. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.

  124. Verse 24,

  125. Joseph took his wife but knew her not

  126. until she had given birth to a son.

  127. So Matthew repeatedly points out

  128. that Jesus did not originate

  129. in the normal human way.

  130. In the words of the Apostles' Creed,

  131. Jesus was conceived by the power

  132. of the Holy Spirit

  133. and born of the Virgin Mary.

  134. This is something that Christians

  135. have always and everywhere believed

  136. ever since the beginning

  137. of the Christian movement.

  138. Now this morning,

  139. I want us to consider two things.

  140. First, I want us to consider

  141. whether this is actually plausible.

  142. Right?

  143. Can we really believe this?

  144. Second, I want us to consider

  145. why does it matter?

  146. Why is it important

  147. that Jesus was born of a virgin,

  148. that he was supernaturally conceived?

  149. So first,

  150. is this actually believable?

  151. Is it plausible?

  152. Ever since the beginning of Christianity,

  153. right, Christians have always

  154. proclaimed this and believed this

  155. and confessed this,

  156. but many people have been skeptical.

  157. Also ever since the beginning

  158. of Christianity,

  159. not just in modern times.

  160. some people,

  161. some of the Jewish people

  162. who did not accept Jesus

  163. as the Messiah

  164. accused him of being born illegitimately.

  165. There was a rumor

  166. that he was born of a Roman soldier

  167. getting together with Mary.

  168. Right?

  169. So from the beginning,

  170. people were skeptical.

  171. And so we have to ask,

  172. is this plausible?

  173. Right?

  174. Some people say today,

  175. a virgin birth,

  176. scientifically impossible.

  177. Now, parthenogenesis,

  178. that's the scientific term

  179. for virgin birth,

  180. does occur occasionally

  181. in some animals,

  182. but how could a woman

  183. with XX chromosomes

  184. give birth to a man

  185. with XY?

  186. Where does the Y come from?

  187. Without any male involvement.

  188. That seems unbelievable, right?

  189. But the search

  190. for a scientific explanation

  191. is misguided.

  192. Because Matthew is not claiming

  193. that God used

  194. a very unusual

  195. or previously unrecognized

  196. set of natural processes

  197. to produce a very statistically

  198. unlikely outcome.

  199. No.

  200. His claim is

  201. that the God

  202. who made the world

  203. chose to intervene

  204. within it.

  205. The Christian claim is

  206. God acted supernaturally.

  207. He did something

  208. that would never have happened

  209. through natural processes alone.

  210. So we then have to ask,

  211. well,

  212. could God intervene

  213. in the world?

  214. Can God step in

  215. and do something

  216. that would never happen

  217. through natural processes alone?

  218. Well, if you believe

  219. in the God of the Bible,

  220. or really if you believe

  221. in any kind of God at all,

  222. or even if you're agnostic,

  223. you can't rule out

  224. the possibility

  225. of divine intervention

  226. in principle.

  227. You have to evaluate

  228. on a case-by-case basis.

  229. Now, that doesn't mean

  230. that you should believe

  231. everyone who tells you

  232. that they have seen a miracle

  233. or that God has spoken to them

  234. and told them

  235. to do them something

  236. or appeared to them

  237. in a dream.

  238. In fact, the Bible

  239. instructs us to be discerning,

  240. not to just believe everything,

  241. not to be naive.

  242. The Bible instructs us

  243. neither to dismiss

  244. all such claims out of hand.

  245. It says,

  246. don't despise prophecies,

  247. but test everything,

  248. hold on to what is good.

  249. Don't dismiss everything

  250. out of hand,

  251. but also don't naively believe

  252. anyone regardless of,

  253. without checking

  254. into their story.

  255. So the question isn't,

  256. is the virgin birth

  257. of Christ possible,

  258. but more like,

  259. is it fitting?

  260. Is it plausible?

  261. Does it make sense

  262. given what we know

  263. of the character of God?

  264. Is this the kind of thing

  265. that the true God

  266. would actually do?

  267. Now, some people say no.

  268. Some people say

  269. the idea of a virgin birth

  270. sounds like a pagan legend,

  271. right?

  272. They say,

  273. pagan legend imported

  274. from Greek and Roman legends

  275. and created long after the fact.

  276. Doesn't the Roman writer Ovid

  277. have stories of the gods

  278. copulating with mortals

  279. and producing demigods?

  280. Well, yes.

  281. Although,

  282. there are stories

  283. of pagan gods

  284. who take on the bodies

  285. of men or of animals

  286. and produce demigods

  287. born of human mothers.

  288. Those are not stories,

  289. however,

  290. of virginal conceptions,

  291. and they are very different

  292. from what we see here.

  293. All that Matthew tells us

  294. is that Mary was found

  295. to be with child

  296. from the Holy Spirit.

  297. There are no sensational details

  298. or wild speculations.

  299. It's seen as something

  300. that was real

  301. and yet mysterious.

  302. Further,

  303. other stories

  304. of supposedly miraculous births

  305. were written down

  306. hundreds of years

  307. after the hero died.

  308. So,

  309. there's a legend

  310. that Alexander the Great

  311. was born of the Greek god Zeus.

  312. That legend

  313. was written down

  314. 400 years

  315. after Alexander died

  316. by the Roman writer Plutarch.

  317. The Gospel of Matthew,

  318. by contrast,

  319. was written at most

  320. 50 or 60 years

  321. after Jesus died,

  322. perhaps even before that.

  323. And most scholars

  324. believe that Matthew

  325. was drawing on

  326. earlier traditions.

  327. Matthew is the most Jewish

  328. of the Gospels,

  329. so,

  330. most likely,

  331. those traditions

  332. came from Jerusalem

  333. or Judea,

  334. the most Jewish area.

  335. Now,

  336. for the first 30 years

  337. after Jesus' death

  338. and resurrection,

  339. guess who was leading

  340. the church in Jerusalem?

  341. Jesus' own brother James.

  342. Unfounded legends

  343. about miraculous births

  344. do not usually originate

  345. when family members

  346. who know the truth

  347. are there.

  348. to set the story right.

  349. Now,

  350. other people say

  351. Matthew created

  352. the idea of a virgin birth

  353. out of Old Testament prophecies

  354. like the one he quotes

  355. in verse 23.

  356. Isn't that what he's doing?

  357. He finds an Old Testament text

  358. and then he makes

  359. a story around it

  360. to show the people

  361. that the prophecy

  362. has been fulfilled.

  363. But really,

  364. he made the story up.

  365. But,

  366. there's a problem.

  367. Prior to Matthew,

  368. we have no evidence

  369. that anyone interpreted

  370. Isaiah 7,

  371. which is the chapter

  372. he's quoting from,

  373. as a prophecy

  374. of a literal virgin

  375. giving birth to the Messiah.

  376. So,

  377. in fact,

  378. nobody even saw it

  379. as talking about

  380. the Messiah.

  381. So,

  382. why would Matthew

  383. take a verse

  384. that no one

  385. had previously seen

  386. as a messianic prophecy

  387. and invent a story

  388. around it

  389. that had no historical basis?

  390. That's just stupid.

  391. If you want to persuade somebody,

  392. that won't persuade anybody.

  393. People will be like,

  394. what?

  395. Nobody even thinks

  396. that text is talking

  397. about that at all.

  398. Right?

  399. It only makes sense

  400. the other way around.

  401. It's much more likely

  402. that Matthew received

  403. a report

  404. from reliable sources,

  405. perhaps from Jesus'

  406. family members

  407. or relatives themselves,

  408. that Jesus was born

  409. supernaturally,

  410. born of a virgin,

  411. and in light of that report

  412. and that reality,

  413. he saw that the prophecy

  414. of Isaiah

  415. had been fulfilled

  416. in a way

  417. that no one

  418. had previously expected.

  419. You see,

  420. many things in life

  421. only become clear to us

  422. in hindsight

  423. when we're looking back

  424. on them.

  425. We never could have guessed

  426. how they would turn out

  427. in advance.

  428. And that's true

  429. with many Old Testament prophecies.

  430. We wouldn't have guessed

  431. exactly how they would

  432. be fulfilled in advance.

  433. But when we look back

  434. on them,

  435. we see something

  436. that we couldn't see before.

  437. Now, if you're interested

  438. in Isaiah chapter 7

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  439. in particular,

  440. what was its meaning

  441. in Isaiah's time

  442. and how was it fulfilled

  443. in the birth of Jesus,

  444. I preached a sermon

  445. about a year ago

  446. on that chapter.

  447. You can listen to it.

  448. It's on the church website

  449. and you can ask me about

  450. or you can ask me

  451. about it afterwards

  452. if you have questions

  453. because I'm not going

  454. to get into all the details today.

  455. So,

  456. many reasons

  457. why people reject

  458. the virgin birth

  459. are not actually

  460. that convincing.

  461. But are there any

  462. positive reasons

  463. to think

  464. that the virgin birth

  465. of Jesus

  466. actually is

  467. fitting

  468. and plausible

  469. and appropriate?

  470. Well, imagine

  471. if you were one

  472. of Matthew's

  473. first readers.

  474. You would have

  475. already been familiar

  476. with the Old Testament

  477. because Matthew's gospel

  478. is the most Jewish

  479. of all the gospels.

  480. Almost everybody agrees

  481. that he was writing

  482. to people

  483. of Jewish background,

  484. whether they were Jews

  485. who had come to believe

  486. in Jesus as the Messiah

  487. or whether he was writing

  488. to persuade Jews

  489. to believe in Jesus

  490. as the promised Messiah.

  491. But he's writing

  492. to a largely,

  493. though not exclusively,

  494. Jewish audience.

  495. And so,

  496. they would have known

  497. that in the Old Testament

  498. we have a few examples

  499. of unusual

  500. or even miraculous

  501. births.

  502. Periodically,

  503. the people of Israel

  504. found themselves

  505. in desperate straits.

  506. Things were going badly

  507. and it seemed like

  508. everything was going

  509. to fall apart.

  510. But God demonstrated

  511. his kindness

  512. to his people

  513. and his faithfulness

  514. to his promises

  515. by providing a child.

  516. And that child

  517. would later grow up

  518. to lead and teach

  519. and deliver

  520. the people of Israel.

  521. So, a few examples

  522. from the Old Testament

  523. of this.

  524. We might think of

  525. the founders

  526. of the Jewish nation,

  527. Abraham and Sarah.

  528. Right?

  529. God had called them.

  530. They had left behind

  531. everything they had ever known,

  532. left behind their home country,

  533. followed the call of God,

  534. and God had promised

  535. that through

  536. one of their descendants,

  537. that one of their descendants

  538. would eventually become

  539. the ancestor

  540. of a great nation.

  541. And yet,

  542. they get older and older,

  543. they get into their

  544. 80s and 90s,

  545. and still,

  546. they have no child

  547. of their own.

  548. Until,

  549. God provides a son,

  550. Isaac,

  551. when Abraham is 100

  552. and Sarah is 90.

  553. Or,

  554. you might think of

  555. a few hundred years later.

  556. People of Israel

  557. are oppressed

  558. and enslaved in Egypt.

  559. Pharaoh is attempting

  560. to exterminate them.

  561. But then,

  562. baby Moses was born.

  563. Now,

  564. his parents were likely young,

  565. no unusual circumstances

  566. in that regard,

  567. but Moses particularly

  568. was preserved

  569. in a time

  570. when his very life

  571. was threatened.

  572. He was preserved

  573. through childhood

  574. and was able to grow up

  575. and grew up

  576. to deliver God's people.

  577. Or,

  578. a couple hundred years later,

  579. the people of Israel

  580. are in the land of Canaan

  581. and they're defeated

  582. and oppressed

  583. by the Philistines

  584. and the angel of the Lord

  585. comes to a couple

  586. who are previously infertile

  587. and says,

  588. you will have a son,

  589. call him Samson.

  590. And he will begin

  591. to save Israel

  592. from the hand

  593. of the Philistines.

  594. Not long after that,

  595. God answered

  596. the prayers of Hannah,

  597. another infertile woman,

  598. she and her husband

  599. and gave her

  600. and her husband

  601. a son Samuel

  602. who grew up to be

  603. a prophet

  604. and teacher

  605. of God's people.

  606. So,

  607. we see,

  608. periodically,

  609. on multiple occasions,

  610. God's people

  611. find themselves

  612. in desperate circumstances

  613. and God shows

  614. his kindness

  615. and faithfulness

  616. to them

  617. through the gift

  618. of a child.

  619. And Matthew's readers

  620. would have known that

  621. and they would have said,

  622. yes,

  623. that's the God

  624. we believe in.

  625. We believe in a God

  626. who sees us

  627. when we are in desperate straits

  628. and who hears our prayers

  629. and who answers our prayers

  630. and sometimes the way

  631. he answers prayers

  632. is by providing

  633. in unusual ways

  634. for a child

  635. to be born

  636. and to grow up

  637. and to fulfill his mission

  638. and to lead the people.

  639. They would have said,

  640. yes,

  641. that's the God

  642. we know and trust.

  643. And Matthew says to them

  644. and he says to us,

  645. look here.

  646. Here's the same God.

  647. The one true God

  648. showing his kindness,

  649. showing his faithfulness

  650. through the greatest gift

  651. of all.

  652. The same Holy Spirit

  653. who quietly hovered

  654. over the formless emptiness

  655. in Genesis 1

  656. who gave life

  657. to all that God had made

  658. is still alive

  659. and now active

  660. in bringing Jesus,

  661. the Messiah,

  662. into the world.

  663. Of all the unusual

  664. and providential births

  665. that have happened

  666. in human history,

  667. isn't it fitting

  668. that the birth

  669. of the Messiah himself

  670. would be the most unusual

  671. and directly supernatural

  672. of all?

  673. So I think it is fitting

  674. and plausible

  675. and appropriate

  676. to believe

  677. in the virgin birth.

  678. But second,

  679. I want us to ask,

  680. why does that matter?

  681. Why is this important

  682. that Jesus was born

  683. in a supernatural way,

  684. not through

  685. the natural means,

  686. not through natural way

  687. of being conceived?

  688. I think at its core

  689. when we say

  690. Jesus was conceived

  691. by the Holy Spirit

  692. and born of the Virgin Mary,

  693. what we're saying

  694. is that our Savior

  695. and Lord

  696. is fully divine

  697. and fully human.

  698. He's fully divine,

  699. conceived by the Holy Spirit,

  700. or as Peter will say

  701. later in the Gospel of Matthew,

  702. the Christ,

  703. the Son of the living God.

  704. He's also fully human,

  705. born of a human mother,

  706. Mary,

  707. and here adopted

  708. and raised

  709. by his legal father,

  710. Joseph.

  711. By marrying Mary,

  712. Joseph takes on

  713. the legal responsibility

  714. of being

  715. the adoptive father

  716. of Jesus.

  717. So he's fully divine

  718. and fully human.

  719. And we see this union

  720. of human and divine

  721. in the two names

  722. that are given

  723. to our Savior

  724. in this passage.

  725. First, verse 21,

  726. the angel says,

  727. you shall call

  728. his name Jesus.

  729. Now, Jesus is

  730. the Hebrew name Joshua.

  731. It's a common name

  732. in the Old Testament

  733. and still today.

  734. Joshua was the successor

  735. of Moses

  736. who led the people of Israel

  737. into the promised land

  738. later on after the exile.

  739. Another Joshua

  740. was the high priest

  741. who led the people

  742. in rebuilding the temple

  743. and several other

  744. less important characters

  745. in the Old Testament

  746. also shared that name.

  747. So at one level,

  748. the name Jesus

  749. or Joshua

  750. emphasizes his human nature.

  751. Jesus came from

  752. the people of Israel.

  753. He's connected to them.

  754. But the name Jesus

  755. also points

  756. to his divine nature

  757. because the name Jesus

  758. or Joshua means

  759. the Lord saves.

  760. Verse 21 says,

  761. he will save his people

  762. from their sins.

  763. Now, human beings

  764. have many problems,

  765. right?

  766. We have sickness

  767. and pain,

  768. weariness

  769. and loneliness,

  770. relational conflicts,

  771. frustrations,

  772. unfulfilled longings.

  773. But the Bible says

  774. that the deepest problem

  775. of all

  776. is our sins.

  777. Our sins

  778. are everything

  779. that keeps us

  780. alienated from God.

  781. Everything that corrupts us

  782. from the inside out.

  783. Everything that's

  784. contrary to God's

  785. intent and purpose

  786. for us

  787. as human beings.

  788. Our sins

  789. are the deepest

  790. and most intractable

  791. of all human problems.

  792. And Jesus

  793. has come

  794. to save us.

  795. Not just from

  796. our day-to-day

  797. challenges,

  798. not just from

  799. the occasional

  800. frustrations

  801. we face

  802. or sorrows

  803. we endure,

  804. but He

  805. hasn't just

  806. come to save us

  807. from some

  808. of our sins

  809. but from

  810. all of our sins.

  811. And only God

  812. can do that.

  813. In fact,

  814. Psalm

    Psalms 130:8

  815. chapter 130

  816. verse 8

  817. says,

  818. the Lord Himself

  819. will redeem

  820. Israel

  821. from all

  822. their

  823. sins.

  824. And verse 21,

  825. maybe echoing

  826. that Psalm,

  827. He will save

  828. His people

  829. from their sins

  830. and the people

  831. would have remembered

  832. in that Psalm

  833. that they would

  834. frequently sing,

  835. the Lord Himself

  836. will come

  837. and redeem

  838. us from

  839. all our sins.

  840. Jesus is

  841. the Lord Himself.

  842. Now,

  843. the second name

  844. given to the Savior

  845. is in verse 23.

  846. They shall call

  847. His name

  848. Emmanuel,

  849. which means

  850. God with us.

  851. Now,

  852. this is a less

  853. common name.

  854. It only appears

  855. here and in Isaiah.

  856. And at one level,

  857. the name Emmanuel

  858. obviously indicates

  859. Jesus' divine nature,

  860. right?

  861. He is God.

  862. God with us.

  863. God Himself.

  864. We read earlier

  865. in Isaiah

  866. that prophecy

  867. of that the child

  868. to be born

  869. will be called

  870. Wonderful Counselor,

  871. Mighty God,

  872. Everlasting Father,

  873. Prince of Peace.

  874. Those titles

  875. are far too exalted

  876. for a mere human being.

  877. You don't call

  878. a normal guy

  879. Mighty God

  880. or Everlasting Father.

  881. No,

  882. those titles

  883. indicate that

  884. we're dealing

  885. with somebody

  886. much more

  887. exalted than that.

  888. And yet,

  889. what does Emmanuel mean?

  890. God with us.

  891. Again,

  892. it points to

  893. Jesus' divine nature

  894. but also to

  895. His human nature

  896. that He has come

  897. to share

  898. our humanity.

  899. He's the fulfillment

  900. of the Old Testament

  901. promise that

  902. God Himself

  903. would come

  904. to dwell

  905. and rest

  906. with His people.

  907. And we can call

  908. Him Emmanuel

  909. because He is God

  910. who has come

  911. to be with us.

  912. In verse 23,

  913. Matthew quotes

  914. from Isaiah chapter 7

    Isaiah 7:14

  915. verse 14.

  916. And he quotes

  917. the verse

  918. almost exactly

  919. but He changes

  920. one word.

  921. Isaiah

  922. says,

  923. Behold,

  924. the virgin

  925. shall conceive

  926. and bear a son

  927. and

  928. she

  929. shall call

  930. His name

  931. Emmanuel.

  932. But Matthew

  933. says,

  934. Behold,

  935. the virgin

  936. shall conceive

  937. and bear a son

  938. and they

  939. shall call

  940. His name

  941. Emmanuel.

  942. You see,

  943. it's not just

  944. Mary

  945. who can call

  946. Jesus

  947. God with us.

  948. it's all

  949. the people

  950. who He has

  951. come

  952. to save

  953. from our sins.

  954. Right?

  955. Who's they?

  956. Well,

  957. you look up

  958. at verse 21.

  959. He will save

  960. His people

  961. from their sins

  962. and they

  963. shall call

  964. His name

  965. Emmanuel.

  966. Every one

  967. of us

  968. who have

  969. received

  970. Jesus' forgiveness,

  971. who have

  972. looked to Him,

  973. we can know

  974. and call

  975. Him

  976. God

  977. with us.

  978. J.C. Ryle

  979. put it this way.

  980. He said,

  981. If we

  982. want to have

  983. a strong

  984. foundation

  985. for our

  986. faith

  987. and hope,

  988. we must

  989. keep

  990. constantly

  991. in view

  992. our Savior's

  993. divinity.

  994. We must

  995. remember

  996. that Jesus

  997. is fully

  998. God.

  999. He in

  1000. whose blood

  1001. we are

  1002. invited to

  1003. trust

  1004. is the

  1005. Almighty

  1006. God.

  1007. All

  1008. power

  1009. is His

  1010. in heaven

  1011. and earth.

  1012. If we

  1013. are true

  1014. believers

  1015. in Jesus,

  1016. our heart

  1017. need not

  1018. be

  1019. troubled

  1020. or afraid.

  1021. But then

  1022. He goes

  1023. on,

  1024. He says,

  1025. And if

  1026. we would

  1027. have

  1028. sweet

  1029. comfort

  1030. in

  1031. suffering

  1032. and

  1033. trial,

  1034. we must

  1035. keep

  1036. constantly

  1037. in

  1038. view

  1039. our

  1040. Savior's

  1041. humanity.

  1042. He is

  1043. the man,

  1044. Christ

  1045. Jesus,

  1046. who lay

  1047. on the

  1048. bosom

  1049. of the

  1050. Virgin

  1051. Mary

  1052. as a

  1053. little

  1054. infant.

  1055. He

  1056. can be

  1057. touched

  1058. with the

  1059. feeling

  1060. of our

  1061. infirmities.

  1062. He

  1063. has

  1064. experienced

  1065. Satan's

  1066. temptations.

  1067. He

  1068. has

  1069. endured

  1070. hunger,

  1071. shed

  1072. tears,

  1073. and felt

  1074. pain.

  1075. He can

  1076. sympathize

  1077. with

  1078. us.

  1079. Brothers

  1080. and sisters

  1081. in Christ,

  1082. this is

  1083. very good

  1084. news.

  1085. That we

  1086. have a

  1087. fully

  1088. divine

  1089. and fully

  1090. human

  1091. Savior.

  1092. And He

  1093. has been

  1094. this way

  1095. ever

  1096. since

  1097. His

  1098. conception.

  1099. You know,

  1100. I want you

  1101. to just

  1102. consider

  1103. for a few

  1104. moments

  1105. what some

  1106. of the

  1107. implications

  1108. would be

  1109. if Jesus

  1110. had come

  1111. into the

  1112. world

  1113. in some

  1114. other

  1115. way.

  1116. What if

  1117. God had

  1118. instead

  1119. chosen

  1120. to send

  1121. Jesus

  1122. into the

  1123. world

  1124. as a

  1125. fully

  1126. formed

  1127. adult?

  1128. What if

  1129. He had

  1130. bypassed

  1131. the long

  1132. years of

  1133. childhood?

  1134. We don't

  1135. know exactly

  1136. what He did

  1137. as a child

  1138. anyway,

  1139. for the

  1140. most part.

  1141. What if

  1142. He had

  1143. gone more

  1144. directly to

  1145. the culmination

  1146. of His

  1147. mission,

  1148. to die on

  1149. the cross

  1150. for our

  1151. sins?

  1152. But in

  1153. that case,

  1154. He would

  1155. have had

  1156. no human

  1157. parents.

  1158. He would

  1159. have been

  1160. neither a

  1161. son of

  1162. David nor

  1163. a son of

  1164. Abraham.

  1165. So He

  1166. couldn't have

  1167. fulfilled any

  1168. of the

  1169. Old Testament

  1170. prophecies.

  1171. So that's a

  1172. problem.

  1173. But even

  1174. more,

  1175. if Jesus

  1176. had come

  1177. into the

  1178. world as

  1179. a fully

  1180. formed

  1181. adult,

  1182. could we

  1183. really say

  1184. that He

  1185. had been

  1186. made

  1187. like

  1188. us

  1189. His

  1190. brothers

  1191. and

  1192. sisters

  1193. in

  1194. every

  1195. respect,

  1196. as the

  1197. author of

  1198. Hebrews

  1199. says?

  1200. Would He

  1201. really be

  1202. one who

  1203. in every

  1204. respect has

  1205. been tempted

  1206. as we

  1207. are,

  1208. yet without

  1209. sin?

  1210. Would it

  1211. really reflect

  1212. His merciful

  1213. will to

  1214. save

  1215. children as

  1216. well as

  1217. adults?

  1218. Now,

  1219. children,

  1220. I know

  1221. you're out

  1222. there.

  1223. I want to

  1224. talk to

  1225. you for

  1226. a minute.

  1227. So look

  1228. up at me.

  1229. If you've

  1230. been drawing

  1231. or coloring,

  1232. that's fine,

  1233. but I

  1234. want to

  1235. talk to

  1236. you directly

  1237. for a

  1238. minute or

  1239. two.

  1240. Right?

  1241. Maybe you're

  1242. younger,

  1243. maybe you're

  1244. older,

  1245. but you're

  1246. living at

  1247. home,

  1248. you're under

  1249. the authority

  1250. of your

  1251. parents.

  1252. Let me

  1253. ask you

  1254. a question.

  1255. Do you

  1256. ever feel

  1257. like your

  1258. parents don't

  1259. completely

  1260. understand you?

  1261. That maybe

  1262. they've

  1263. forgotten what

  1264. it's like

  1265. to be a

  1266. kid?

  1267. Now,

  1268. Jesus knows

  1269. exactly what

  1270. it's like

  1271. to be

  1272. a kid

  1273. because he

  1274. was once

  1275. a kid

  1276. too,

  1277. and Jesus

  1278. never

  1279. forgets

  1280. anything.

  1281. He hasn't

  1282. forgotten what

  1283. it's like

  1284. to be a

  1285. kid,

  1286. and he

  1287. understands

  1288. the challenges

  1289. you face,

  1290. and he's

  1291. always available

  1292. to help

  1293. you.

  1294. When Jesus

  1295. was a kid,

  1296. he had to

  1297. honor and

  1298. obey his

  1299. parents,

  1300. even though

  1301. his parents

  1302. weren't perfect

  1303. and he was

  1304. a lot smarter

  1305. than them.

  1306. And he

  1307. can help

  1308. you to

  1309. honor and

  1310. obey your

  1311. parents too,

  1312. even when

  1313. they fall

  1314. short,

  1315. because that's

  1316. one of the

  1317. responsibilities

  1318. that God

  1319. has given

  1320. to you.

  1321. Jesus died

  1322. on the cross

  1323. for children,

  1324. not just

  1325. for adults,

  1326. and so he

  1327. invites you

  1328. to talk to

  1329. him in

  1330. prayer,

  1331. and he

  1332. promises

  1333. that he

  1334. will always

  1335. listen.

  1336. So it's

  1337. good that

  1338. Jesus

  1339. didn't just

  1340. come into

  1341. the world

  1342. as an

  1343. adult.

  1344. But let's

  1345. think about

  1346. one other

  1347. possibility.

  1348. What if

  1349. Jesus had

  1350. come into

  1351. the world

  1352. in the

  1353. normal way?

  1354. What if

  1355. this story

  1356. about being

  1357. born of a

  1358. virgin

  1359. wasn't true

  1360. at all?

  1361. He just

  1362. came with

  1363. the normal

  1364. contribution

  1365. of a

  1366. human

  1367. father

  1368. and a

  1369. human

  1370. mother,

  1371. and then

  1372. maybe at

  1373. birth or

  1374. maybe later

  1375. on he

  1376. was anointed

  1377. by the

  1378. Holy Spirit

  1379. like King

  1380. David?

  1381. Now that's

  1382. what many

  1383. people say

  1384. who find

  1385. the virgin

  1386. birth too

  1387. hard to

  1388. swallow,

  1389. but they

  1390. still want

  1391. to believe

  1392. that Jesus

  1393. was somehow

  1394. special.

  1395. But again,

  1396. that option

  1397. creates big

  1398. problems.

  1399. For one

  1400. thing,

  1401. it would

  1402. mean that

  1403. both Matthew

  1404. and Luke,

  1405. who both

  1406. tell us

  1407. that Jesus

  1408. was born

  1409. of a virgin,

  1410. that both

  1411. Matthew and

  1412. Luke are

  1413. lying to

  1414. us,

  1415. or at the

  1416. very least

  1417. carelessly

  1418. passing on

  1419. unreliable and

  1420. fanciful accounts

  1421. of Jesus'

  1422. origins.

  1423. Even more

  1424. than that,

  1425. if Jesus was

  1426. conceived by

  1427. purely natural

  1428. means,

  1429. then the

  1430. Savior of the

  1431. world would

  1432. then be the

  1433. result of a

  1434. joint human

  1435. effort.

  1436. Mary and

  1437. Joseph could

  1438. look at each

  1439. other and

  1440. say,

  1441. we produce

  1442. the Savior,

  1443. just the two

  1444. of us.

  1445. Aren't we

  1446. special?

  1447. We've

  1448. accomplished

  1449. something really

  1450. great.

  1451. But the

  1452. whole message

  1453. of the

  1454. Bible is

  1455. that God's

  1456. salvation is

  1457. not the

  1458. result of a

  1459. human initiative

  1460. using natural

  1461. means.

  1462. God's grace

  1463. is not just

  1464. the frosting on

  1465. the cake of

  1466. our human

  1467. accomplishments.

  1468. God sent

  1469. Jesus to

  1470. save us

  1471. because all

  1472. of our human

  1473. efforts to

  1474. make things

  1475. right have

  1476. fallen short

  1477. and failed to

  1478. produce the

  1479. redemption that

  1480. we need and

  1481. long for.

  1482. God's salvation

  1483. is carried out

  1484. by the power

  1485. of the Holy

  1486. Spirit within

  1487. all those who,

  1488. like Joseph and

  1489. Mary,

  1490. simply receive

  1491. His Word

  1492. and respond to

  1493. Him with

  1494. trust and

  1495. obedience.

  1496. An early

  1497. Christian writer

  1498. whose name

  1499. has been lost

  1500. to us wrote

  1501. this,

  1502. Humanity is

  1503. born out of

  1504. the necessity

  1505. to exist.

  1506. Today we

  1507. might say

  1508. humanity

  1509. reproduces out

  1510. of the struggle

  1511. to survive.

  1512. He continues,

  1513. Christ,

  1514. however,

  1515. was not born

  1516. out of the

  1517. necessity of

  1518. nature to

  1519. exist,

  1520. but by His

  1521. merciful will

  1522. to save.

  1523. not out of

  1524. the necessity

  1525. of nature,

  1526. but by His

  1527. merciful will

  1528. to save.

  1529. That's what it

  1530. means that Jesus

  1531. was conceived

  1532. by the Holy

  1533. Spirit and born

  1534. of a virgin.

  1535. It shows us

  1536. God's merciful

  1537. will to save.

  1538. Or as another

  1539. early church

  1540. father,

  1541. Origen,

  1542. put it,

  1543. His birth was

  1544. both like

  1545. ours and

  1546. above ours.

  1547. To be born

  1548. of a woman

  1549. is like our

  1550. birth,

  1551. but to be

  1552. born not

  1553. of the will

  1554. of the flesh

  1555. or of man

  1556. is above

  1557. ours.

  1558. There is

  1559. here a

  1560. hint,

  1561. a prior

  1562. announcement

  1563. of a future

  1564. birth to

  1565. be bestowed

  1566. upon us

  1567. by the

  1568. Spirit.

  1569. You see,

  1570. what Origen

  1571. was getting

  1572. at was

  1573. this,

  1574. because Jesus

  1575. came into

  1576. the world

  1577. in a divine

  1578. and supernatural

  1579. way,

  1580. the salvation

  1581. that He gives

  1582. us is a

  1583. divine and

  1584. supernatural

  1585. gift.

  1586. Jesus was

  1587. conceived by

  1588. the Holy

  1589. Spirit within

  1590. the womb

  1591. of Mary in

  1592. a wonderful

  1593. and mysterious

  1594. way,

  1595. and similarly,

  1596. we are born

  1597. again.

  1598. We are brought

  1599. into new life

  1600. in Christ

  1601. through the

  1602. same Holy

  1603. Spirit in a

  1604. wonderful and

  1605. mysterious way

  1606. that we can't

  1607. even fully explain.

  1608. Jesus says,

  1609. the wind blows

  1610. where it pleases,

  1611. and you can see

  1612. its effects,

  1613. but you can't

  1614. grasp onto it.

  1615. You can't…

  1616. There's a mystery

  1617. to it.

  1618. There's a mystery

  1619. to how God

  1620. brings us

  1621. out of ourselves

  1622. and out of our

  1623. darkness

  1624. into the light

  1625. of Jesus,

  1626. but boy,

  1627. is it real.

  1628. Just because

  1629. it's mysterious

  1630. don't make it

  1631. any less real.

  1632. The early

  1633. church father

  1634. said over and

  1635. over,

  1636. He has taken

  1637. on what was

  1638. ours,

  1639. our humanity,

  1640. even our sin

  1641. and our death,

  1642. in order to

  1643. generously share

  1644. with us what

  1645. was His,

  1646. His divinity,

  1647. His righteousness

  1648. and life.

  1649. He's taken

  1650. on what was

  1651. ours to give

  1652. us what was

  1653. His.

  1654. Have you

  1655. received God's

  1656. grace in Jesus

  1657. as a gift?

  1658. Have you

  1659. turned away

  1660. from trusting

  1661. in yourself

  1662. and trying

  1663. to save

  1664. yourself

  1665. through your

  1666. own efforts

  1667. and your

  1668. own accomplishments?

  1669. Have you

  1670. come to

  1671. trust in

  1672. Jesus,

  1673. the fully

  1674. divine

  1675. and fully

  1676. human

  1677. one,

  1678. as your

  1679. and the

  1680. only Savior

  1681. and Lord?

  1682. Hail,

  1683. the heaven-born

  1684. Prince of

  1685. Peace.

  1686. Hail,

  1687. the Son

  1688. of Righteousness,

  1689. light and

  1690. life to all

  1691. He brings,

  1692. risen with

  1693. healing in

  1694. His wings,

  1695. born to

  1696. raise the

  1697. sons of

  1698. earth,

  1699. born to

  1700. give us

  1701. second birth.

  1702. Let's pray.

  1703. Father, thank

  1704. You for the

  1705. gift of Your

  1706. Son.

  1707. Thank You for

  1708. the power of

  1709. Your Spirit.

  1710. Thank You for

  1711. Matthew and

  1712. His faithful

  1713. report.

  1714. We pray,

  1715. Lord, that we

  1716. would know the

  1717. power of Your

  1718. Spirit working

  1719. in our hearts

  1720. today.

  1721. Lord, that we

  1722. would know

  1723. the joy

  1724. and peace

  1725. that You have

  1726. come to

  1727. save us from

  1728. our sins,

  1729. that You have

  1730. come to be

  1731. God with

  1732. us,

  1733. the God

  1734. who has

  1735. promised never

  1736. to leave us,

  1737. never to forsake

  1738. us, to be with

  1739. us to the very

  1740. end of the age.

  1741. We thank You,

  1742. Lord, for who You

  1743. are.

  1744. Pray this in Your

  1745. name.

  1746. Amen.
