  1. We're going to do a sermon series today in the Gospel of Luke.

  2. So if you'll turn with me to Luke chapter 19, that's where we're going to get it.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  3. That's page 825 in the few miles.

  4. Luke chapter 19, page 825.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  5. This time of year, the time between Christmas and Easter, is this hard time when the church

  6. has focused its attention on the person of Jesus.

  7. We're always focusing on Christ because we've just sung.

  8. What we want is to see Christ more clearly, but it's good to regularly return to the Gospels

  9. themselves and get a firsthand encounter there with the one that we worship, the one that

  10. is at the center of our worship, Jesus.

  11. Now, as we start into the Gospel of Luke this season, just a quick orientation to this book.

  12. The Gospel of Luke falls roughly into three parts.

  13. The first, chapters 1 through 9, deal with Jesus' birth and his ministry in Galilee.

  14. And the big question that Luke deals with there is, who is this Jesus?

  15. And the picture that emerges in Luke 1 through 9 is that Jesus is, in fact, Israel's Messiah,

  16. the Lord, the liberator that we've been waiting for.

  17. And then begins the second section of the Gospel of Luke, in chapters 9 through 19.

  18. And there Luke recounts Jesus' long journey from Galilee to Jerusalem.

  19. And here we join the disciples on the road with Jesus.

  20. And Luke is dealing with the question here of, what does it mean to follow Jesus?

  21. What does it mean to follow him?

  22. And the picture that emerges in 9 through 19 is that following Jesus means complete allegiance

  23. to him as our Lord.

  24. And if you were here last winter and spring, we preached through that section of Luke.

  25. You can find those sorts on the website if you want to go back and listen to some of those.

  26. But now, we come to the third and final section of Luke's Gospel, chapters 19 through 24.

  27. And these chapters deal with the climax of Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem.

  28. And the big question here that Luke takes up is, what has Jesus come to do?

  29. This liberator who calls for our utmost allegiance, what is the work he's come to accomplish?

  30. How will he set us free?

  31. And the shocking answer to that question, the answer that will turn everything upside down,

  32. the answer that will make Jesus and Christianity completely different than every other religion,

  33. the answer to that question is, the cross.

  34. Now why is Luke right on this?

  35. In the opening chapter of Luke, chapter 1, the opening verses,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  36. he says there that he's taking time to research and gather all these first-hand accounts of Jesus.

  37. Luke's writing in the 60s, 70s, the first century, 60s, 70s, 80s.

  38. He says he's gathered all these first-hand accounts of Jesus,

  39. put them into an orderly account, so that his young friend named Theophilus

  40. might know the certainty of the things he did.

  41. He wants the faith of his friend not to rest on wishful thinking or on vague notions,

  42. but on the certainty of who Jesus is and what he's done.

  43. So it's our prayer that as we launch into the gospel, Luke again,

  44. that that same sort of assurance, that same sort of assuring certainty will increasingly be ours.

  45. And out of that assurance, we can be the kind of people who are people of love and hope and even joy

  46. in the midst of our city that so desperately needs all of us.

  47. So why don't we pray?

  48. And then we'll dive into those things.

  49. Let's pray.

  50. Father, we are grateful that we get a chance on Sunday mornings to gather together as your people

  51. in this new covenant that you want for us, where there's grace and forgiveness in life.

  52. Amen.

  53. God, thank you that through your word you speak to us.

  54. Thank you that we have these documents that have been written and preserved and inspired by your spirit

  55. so that we can hear afresh the truth of who you are and what you've done, Jesus,

  56. and what you continue to do through your spirit in your church and in our own lives.

  57. God, do your work this morning, we pray as we attend to your word.

  58. We ask this humbly in the name of Jesus.

  59. Amen.

  60. So we're getting up to Luke 19, verses 11 through 28.

    Luke 19:11–28

  61. This is the passage that ends the second section of Luke's gospel and begins the third and final section

  62. of Luke's gospel, Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem.

  63. So Luke 19, verse 11.

    Luke 19:11

  64. As they heard these things, he, that is Jesus, proceeded to tell Pharaoh, because he was here to Jerusalem,

  65. and because they supposed that the kingdom of God to appear, he is.

  66. He said, therefore, a nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.

  67. Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten meetings and said to them,

  68. Engage in business until I come.

  69. But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying,

  70. We do not want this man to reign over us.

  71. When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to move me and give him the money to be called to him,

  72. that he might know what they would gain by doing business.

  73. The first came forward and saying,

  74. Lord, your mena has made ten meetings.

  75. And he said to him,

  76. Well done, good servant, because you have been faithful and very little,

  77. you shall have a foreign meeting.

  78. And the second came, saying,

  79. Lord, your mena has made five meetings.

  80. And he said to him,

  81. You are to be over five meetings.

  82. Then another came, saying,

  83. Lord, here is your being,

  84. which I kept laying away in the hand of chief.

  85. For I was afraid,

  86. because you are a severe man,

  87. you take what you did not deposit,

  88. reap what you did not sow.

  89. And he said to him,

  90. I will condemn you with your own words,

  91. you wicked servant.

  92. You knew that I was a severe man,

  93. taking what I did not deposit,

  94. reap what I did not sow.

  95. Why then did you not put my money in the bank?

  96. And am I coming?

  97. I might have collected it with interest.

  98. He said to those who stood by,

  99. Take the need of him,

  100. give it to the one who has ten meetings.

  101. And he said to him,

  102. Lord, he has ten meetings.

  103. I tell you,

  104. that to everyone who has,

  105. more will be given.

  106. But to the one who has not,

  107. even what he has,

  108. will be taken away.

  109. But as for these enemies of mine,

  110. who did not want me to reign over them,

  111. break from the air,

  112. it's a lot of them for me.

  113. When he said these things,

  114. he went on ahead.

  115. I'll go back to Jerusalem.

  116. Well,

  117. our passage today

  118. is about expectations.

  119. Expectations, of course,

  120. can be a very powerful thing.

  121. Imagine the school child waking up,

  122. seeing snow on the ground,

  123. one expecting for a snow day.

  124. And yet being told,

  125. let go,

  126. despite their expectations,

  127. they still have to go to school.

  128. That's going to be a rough morning

  129. for the fall.

  130. Or imagine a newly married couple

  131. settling into their new home,

  132. and one expecting that the other

  133. will gladly do the bills,

  134. or take care of the shopping,

  135. because, well,

  136. that's how it was growing up for them.

  137. Think about getting a new job.

  138. Finally, this is the place

  139. where I can make my mark,

  140. get ahead,

  141. earn respect.

  142. It's not hard to see

  143. that these kinds of

  144. almost unconscious expectations

  145. can be the source

  146. of all sorts of

  147. misunderstanding,

  148. disappointment,

  149. but have you ever considered

  150. that that's also true spiritually?

  151. Many expect

  152. religion to always say

  153. basically the same thing.

  154. And then are very surprised

  155. when they find out

  156. that they're actually quite old.

  157. Many expect Jesus

  158. to be just another

  159. good moral teacher,

  160. and then are surprised

  161. or even taken aback

  162. when they find out

  163. that he's claiming

  164. a whole lot more than that.

  165. Many expect

  166. that following Jesus

  167. will always make our life easier,

  168. and then are surprised,

  169. even upset,

  170. or discouraged,

  171. when the road gets rough

  172. and trials come.

  173. in verse 11 of our passage,

  174. we see that Jesus

  175. tells this parable

  176. because he's about

  177. to arrive in Jerusalem,

  178. and the people around him

  179. expect the kingdom of God

  180. to appear immediately.

  181. The kingdom of God,

  182. that is,

  183. the world healing,

  184. justice-bringing,

  185. evil,

  186. and the in-taking

  187. reign

  188. of the creator God

  189. on the earth,

  190. where the world's last

  191. would be put

  192. right next to the kingdom

  193. of God.

  194. And had God

  195. Jesus himself said

  196. that that kingdom

  197. was at hand,

  198. and that the kingdom

  199. was even in their midst,

  200. so they're expecting

  201. the kingdom of God

  202. now to remain

  203. under Jerusalem

  204. to appear

  205. in the earth.

  206. But although Jesus

  207. had indeed

  208. launched God's kingdom

  209. in his own person

  210. at work,

  211. the kingdom of God

  212. in its complete fullness

  213. was not going to appear.

  214. in other words,

  215. in Jesus,

  216. the kingdom of God

  217. was inaugurated,

  218. but its consummation

  219. was not going to happen

  220. right away,

  221. as the disciples expected.

  222. And so our expectations

  223. can cause us

  224. such problems

  225. relationally,

  226. vocationally,

  227. and so the spiritual.

  228. And so this parable

  229. is the just for the first

  230. disciples following

  231. Jesus' own Jerusalem.

  232. It's for us,

  233. today,

  234. as well.

  235. So what should we expect

  236. as followers of Jesus?

  237. Well, the first thing

  238. that this parable shows us

  239. is that we should expect

  240. not immediate victory,

  241. but ongoing responsibility.

  242. We should not expect

  243. immediate victory,

  244. but ongoing responsibility.

  245. Look at it,

  246. verses 12 through 14.

  247. Jesus said,

  248. therefore,

  249. a nobleman

  250. went into a far country

  251. to receive for himself

  252. a kingdom

  253. and then returned,

  254. calling ten of his servants

  255. to give them ten units

  256. and said to them,

  257. engage in business

  258. until I come.

  259. But his citizens

  260. hated him

  261. and sent a delegation

  262. after him,

  263. saying,

  264. we do not want

  265. this man to bring our kids.

  266. Now,

  267. this idea

  268. of a nobleman

  269. going away

  270. to receive a kingdom

  271. or to receive

  272. the authority

  273. to be king

  274. would have been familiar

  275. to Jesus' contemporary.

  276. In fact,

  277. when Herod the Great died,

  278. his son,

  279. Barbeleus,

  280. actually went to Rome

  281. to try to convince Caesar

  282. to make him king

  283. over Judea

  284. in the place of his father.

  285. And the Jewish citizens

  286. disliked Barbeleus

  287. so much

  288. that they sent

  289. an embassy probe

  290. to tell the emperor

  291. that they didn't want

  292. to be a king.

  293. So I think the emperor

  294. ended up making him

  295. sort of a sort of

  296. semi-classic war

  297. and said,

  298. well,

  299. if you move into our menu

  300. and you can use him.

  301. So this idea

  302. that one would go away

  303. in order to receive

  304. the authority

  305. to be a king

  306. was a true man.

  307. I don't know if I could

  308. get him to the

  309. volume to the sword

  310. together here.

  311. And Jesus,

  312. is your client

  313. to his co-signition?

  314. Is it going to result

  315. in an evening king?

  316. Would you say

  317. was that?

  318. Rather,

  319. he's going to be

  320. a king

  321. for some time

  322. and then return

  323. in the future

  324. and fold forward

  325. into the future.

  326. And as the story

  327. of Luke's gospel

  328. unfolds

  329. and as the story

  330. continues

  331. into the past,

  332. that's exactly

  333. what we see.

  334. Jesus accomplishes

  335. his glory personal

  336. and then ascends

  337. to the Father

  338. promising that

  339. he will one day

  340. return in glory

  341. to the Lord.

  342. This is what Jesus

  343. himself

  344. and the rest

  345. of the New Testament

  346. teaches

  347. and is what the

  348. church has professed

  349. from the very beginning

  350. that we live

  351. in between

  352. Christ's first

  353. and second coming.

  354. His first coming

  355. in grace

  356. to purchase

  357. our redemption

  358. and to ignorate

  359. the kingdom

  360. and his second coming

  361. in glory

  362. to judge

  363. and to cause

  364. them.

  365. And so,

  366. like those first

  367. disciples,

  368. we should not

  369. expect immediate

  370. victory in this

  371. in-between time.

  372. We still wrestle

  373. and we will still

  374. wrestle with sin

  375. and temptation.

  376. We will still

  377. battle sickness

  378. and death.

  379. Our relationships

  380. will be hard

  381. at times.

  382. Our emotional life

  383. will not always

  384. be easy.

  385. Being a follower

  386. of Jesus,

  387. being filled

  388. with his spirit

  389. does not maybe

  390. guarantee health,

  391. wealth,

  392. or sinless

  393. temptation.

  394. And if we

  395. expect those things,

  396. we will be

  397. sorely disappointed.

  398. And we can even

  399. end up shaking

  400. our fist to God

  401. when he tells

  402. that he hasn't

  403. accomplished those things.

  404. Rather than

  405. immediate victory,

  406. Jesus is telling

  407. us to expect

  408. ongoing responsibility.

  409. In the parable

  410. 10, servants

  411. are each given

  412. one beating,

  413. which is a unit

  414. of money

  415. that's about

  416. three to four

  417. months' wages

  418. for a day worker.

  419. And they're told

  420. to engage

  421. in business

  422. until he comes.

  423. Engage in business.

  424. Now have you

  425. ever thought about

  426. engaging in business

  427. as a benefit

  428. for discipleship?

  429. That's what Jesus

  430. is doing here.

  431. Had Jesus said

  432. that there were

  433. 12 servants

  434. entrusted with money,

  435. we might have thought

  436. he was talking

  437. about the 12 apostles

  438. maybe.

  439. But no,

  440. there's 10 servants

  441. and that might

  442. have been

  443. talking about

  444. all of us.

  445. Engage in business.

  446. Use what the

  447. master has given

  448. you.

  449. Your time,

  450. your talents,

  451. your treasure,

  452. all of it is a

  453. gift for him

  454. to be used

  455. in the engagement

  456. of his business.

  457. Now I'm not

  458. a business person,

  459. but I do know

  460. that if you want

  461. to be a successful

  462. business person,

  463. you need a plan.

  464. Have you ever

  465. stepped back

  466. and thought

  467. how your time,

  468. your talents,

  469. your resources

  470. can be used

  471. for God's

  472. kingdom?

  473. As you engage

  474. in your location,

  475. as you engage

  476. in your family life,

  477. as you engage

  478. in your community

  479. life,

  480. have you ever

  481. thought,

  482. and made,

  483. yes,

  484. a plan,

  485. about how

  486. I might be

  487. engaged in

  488. the business

  489. of God's

  490. kingdom?

  491. But a business,

  492. you don't just

  493. need a plan,

  494. you also need

  495. to be willing

  496. to take risks,

  497. don't you?

  498. Following Jesus

  499. is like that.

  500. There will be

  501. times when you

  502. need to step

  503. out and do

  504. something risky,

  505. but no great

  506. business venture

  507. ever really was

  508. a success without

  509. a little bit,

  510. or maybe a lot

  511. of risk,

  512. right?

  513. You have to do

  514. something outside

  515. of your comfort

  516. zone,

  517. like striking up

  518. a conversation

  519. with your neighbor,

  520. or maybe volunteering

  521. with a classroom

  522. full of first

  523. graders.

  524. Could there be

  525. anything

  526. you want to do

  527. that?

  528. But in

  529. business,

  530. I've heard

  531. you don't

  532. just need

  533. a plan,

  534. and you

  535. don't just

  536. need a

  537. willingness

  538. to take

  539. risks,

  540. you need

  541. planners.

  542. You can't

  543. move along.

  544. And discipleship

  545. is the same,

  546. we need

  547. each other.

  548. The business

  549. of God

  550. isn't a

  551. one-person

  552. operation.

  553. We need

  554. various

  555. things and

  556. talents and

  557. resources

  558. working together

  559. in this

  560. business of

  561. the kingdom.

  562. But let me

  563. mention just

  564. one last

  565. thing.

  566. In business,

  567. it seems to

  568. be,

  569. you need

  570. confidence.

  571. Because it's

  572. not easy.

  573. Look at

  574. verse 14.

  575. Jesus tells

  576. us to expect

  577. that many

  578. people will

  579. not let

  580. complain to

  581. business.

  582. Some will

  583. passively

  584. reject Jesus

  585. as their

  586. king.

  587. Some will

  588. actively

  589. reject Jesus

  590. as their

  591. king.

  592. So as we

  593. engage in

  594. business,

  595. things are

  596. going to

  597. be easy.

  598. Discipleship

  599. is going to

  600. be hard.

  601. We will

  602. face setbacks

  603. physically,

  604. emotionally,

  605. relationally.

  606. What

  607. confidence

  608. can we

  609. have in

  610. the midst

  611. of the

  612. trials?

  613. Well,

  614. the glimmer

  615. of good

  616. news here

  617. in this

  618. first part

  619. of the

  620. Bible

  621. is this,

  622. that our

  623. king has

  624. looked upon

  625. us,

  626. servants,

  627. and he's

  628. made us

  629. partners.

  630. The

  631. gospel,

  632. the news

  633. that God

  634. accepts us

  635. by grace

  636. and not

  637. works through

  638. Jesus,

  639. elevates us

  640. and gives

  641. us a

  642. statement

  643. that we

  644. want to

  645. be not.

  646. No longer

  647. just serving,

  648. but partners

  649. in this

  650. business of

  651. the kingdom.

  652. What

  653. wonderful news

  654. is that?

  655. That even

  656. if setbacks

  657. and trials

  658. come,

  659. we are

  660. partners with

  661. the king

  662. representing

  663. his interests

  664. in the

  665. world,

  666. awaiting his

  667. glorious

  668. review.

  669. What

  670. better

  671. business

  672. to give

  673. our

  674. help?

  675. What

  676. other

  677. business

  678. venture

  679. could be

  680. more

  681. adventurous

  682. than to be

  683. engaged in

  684. the business

  685. of the king

  686. of the universe?

  687. believers.

  688. This is the

  689. life of

  690. discipleship.

  691. This is what

  692. we should

  693. expect.

  694. Not a

  695. beginning

  696. degree,

  697. but an

  698. ongoing,

  699. glorious,

  700. hard

  701. responsibility.

  702. But there's

  703. more.

  704. The rest of

  705. the parable

  706. is just as

  707. important when

  708. it comes to

  709. our spiritual

  710. expectations.

  711. Because you

  712. see, many

  713. of us expect

  714. that this

  715. life is

  716. all

  717. there is.

  718. Or if

  719. there is

  720. something

  721. more to

  722. come,

  723. it's not

  724. very connected

  725. to what

  726. happens here

  727. and now,

  728. or maybe

  729. only marginally

  730. so.

  731. It sort

  732. of reminds

  733. me of

  734. J.J.

  735. Abrams'

  736. TV show

  737. Lost.

  738. If you

  739. were a

  740. Lost fan,

  741. you'll know

  742. that it was

  743. six seasons

  744. of high

  745. drama,

  746. plot twists

  747. and turns,

  748. character

  749. development,

  750. and then

  751. in the

  752. final episode,

  753. rather than

  754. drawing all

  755. those threads

  756. together and

  757. making a

  758. meaningful

  759. whole out of

  760. the series,

  761. the final

  762. episode simply

  763. had the

  764. characters

  765. reunite,

  766. realize that

  767. much of

  768. their story

  769. didn't matter,

  770. and they

  771. simply walk

  772. into the

  773. light of

  774. the afterlife.

  775. You can

  776. tell I

  777. have to

  778. the light

  779. on the

  780. process.

  781. They

  782. simply move

  783. on.

  784. Is that

  785. what we

  786. should

  787. expect?

  788. Mere

  789. reunion?

  790. reunion?

  791. According to

  792. Jesus in

  793. verses 15

  794. through 27,

  795. we should

  796. expect not

  797. a mere

  798. moving

  799. on

  800. of

  801. your

  802. reunion,

  803. but a

  804. thorough

  805. coming

  806. reckoning.

  807. In the

  808. parable,

  809. the noble

  810. returns

  811. under being

  812. granted a

  813. kingdom,

  814. and he

  815. calls to

  816. him above

  817. his servants

  818. to whom

  819. he entrusted

  820. his money

  821. and the

  822. citizens

  823. who rejected

  824. him.

  825. Now,

  826. it's this

  827. final group

  828. that probably

  829. causes us

  830. the most

  831. concern.

  832. That

  833. description

  834. of judgment

  835. in verse

  836. 27 strikes

  837. us as

  838. incredibly

  839. harsh,

  840. offensive.

  841. But think

  842. for a

  843. moment of

  844. all great

  845. parts.

  846. Sometimes

  847. we need

  848. something

  849. shocking,

  850. something

  851. in your

  852. face to

  853. wake

  854. this

  855. whole

  856. reality.

  857. Is it

  858. much

  859. good

  860. art

  861. like

  862. this?

  863. Whether

  864. it's a

  865. modernist

  866. painting,

  867. or a

  868. punk

  869. from

  870. an album,

  871. it's

  872. raw,

  873. it's

  874. in your

  875. face,

  876. so that

  877. the viewers

  878. of the

  879. minister

  880. will

  881. actually

  882. wake

  883. up

  884. to the

  885. reality

  886. of the

  887. problems

  888. that are

  889. trying to

  890. be

  891. exposed.

  892. So what

  893. is the

  894. reality

  895. in which

  896. Jesus

  897. is trying

  898. to wake

  899. up?

  900. Well,

  901. it's to

  902. the reality

  903. of the

  904. choices

  905. that we

  906. make

  907. in this

  908. life.

  909. have

  910. eternal

  911. meaning.

  912. Life

  913. is not

  914. meaning.

  915. That

  916. thing that

  917. we feel

  918. deep in

  919. our

  920. bones,

  921. that this

  922. life

  923. matters,

  924. that our

  925. choices have

  926. dignity,

  927. that we

  928. aren't

  929. simply dust

  930. specks on

  931. a turntable

  932. of oblivion.

  933. No,

  934. this

  935. throttable

  936. reckoning

  937. by the

  938. King

  939. brings

  940. the good

  941. news that

  942. our choices

  943. matter,

  944. that life

  945. does not

  946. be

  947. used.

  948. But the

  949. harsh reality

  950. is that

  951. one day

  952. some

  953. will be

  954. granted

  955. exactly

  956. what they

  957. have asked

  958. for.

  959. Those who

  960. happen to be

  961. rejected,

  962. who want

  963. nothing to

  964. do with

  965. one,

  966. who want

  967. to be

  968. ridden

  969. once and

  970. for all,

  971. they will

  972. be granted

  973. just that.

  974. In God's

  975. justice,

  976. they will

  977. be excluded

  978. from his

  979. presence,

  980. eternally

  981. separated.

  982. And if

  983. God is

  984. the eternal

  985. source of

  986. all life,

  987. what can

  988. separation

  989. from him

  990. be like

  991. but eternal

  992. death?

  993. Some

  994. modern art

  995. can make us

  996. unworthy

  997. whole,

  998. who will

  999. walk through

  1000. the LR

  1001. and tolerate

  1002. finds a

  1003. freedom

  1004. in people

  1005. pieces,

  1006. but that

  1007. doesn't make

  1008. it any less

  1009. true.

  1010. The question

  1011. this part of

  1012. the parable

  1013. puts to

  1014. us is,

  1015. are we

  1016. in line

  1017. rejected

  1018. the world

  1019. to right

  1020. the king?

  1021. But lest

  1022. we think

  1023. that Jesus'

  1024. parable

  1025. is unfair,

  1026. notice that

  1027. thoroughgoing

  1028. reckoning

  1029. also comes

  1030. to the

  1031. nobleman

  1032. servants.

  1033. In

  1034. particular,

  1035. notice that

  1036. the bulk

  1037. of the

  1038. parable

  1039. deals with

  1040. the last

  1041. servant,

  1042. the servant

  1043. who merely

  1044. returns

  1045. and

  1046. ultimately

  1047. be that

  1048. having

  1049. hidden

  1050. away

  1051. in

  1052. the

  1053. king

  1054. of

  1055. king.

  1056. Now,

  1057. outwardly,

  1058. this servant

  1059. would have

  1060. been

  1061. identified

  1062. with

  1063. becoming

  1064. king.

  1065. He would

  1066. have been

  1067. named

  1068. among

  1069. the business

  1070. partners,

  1071. and yet,

  1072. the reckoning

  1073. proved that

  1074. he had no

  1075. lasting place

  1076. in the

  1077. kingdom.

  1078. The warning

  1079. here is

  1080. to nominal

  1081. Christians,

  1082. that is,

  1083. those who

  1084. identify outwardly

  1085. with Christ

  1086. in name.

  1087. but for

  1088. whom there

  1089. is no

  1090. inward

  1091. reality,

  1092. no real

  1093. relationship

  1094. into Jesus.

  1095. You see,

  1096. it's not

  1097. out of my

  1098. hearts that

  1099. Jesus is

  1100. looking for,

  1101. but inward

  1102. reality,

  1103. inward

  1104. sincerity,

  1105. things like

  1106. baptism,

  1107. or church

  1108. attendance,

  1109. or being

  1110. able to

  1111. recite a

  1112. read,

  1113. those are

  1114. all good

  1115. things that

  1116. can be

  1117. fruits of

  1118. genuine

  1119. faith,

  1120. but in

  1121. and of

  1122. themselves

  1123. they are

  1124. not

  1125. sufficient.

  1126. Now,

  1127. this doesn't

  1128. mean that

  1129. we are

  1130. ultimately

  1131. saved by

  1132. our

  1133. works.

  1134. The good

  1135. fruit of

  1136. our life

  1137. does not

  1138. put us

  1139. in a

  1140. saving

  1141. relationship

  1142. with God.

  1143. We could

  1144. never be

  1145. with it.

  1146. We are

  1147. saved by

  1148. faith in

  1149. Christ's

  1150. righteousness

  1151. alone.

  1152. But as

  1153. the reformers

  1154. would say

  1155. again and

  1156. again,

  1157. we are

  1158. saved by

  1159. faith alone,

  1160. but saving

  1161. faith is

  1162. natural.

  1163. A living

  1164. tree produces

  1165. fruit,

  1166. an active

  1167. bank account

  1168. produces

  1169. fruit.

  1170. Faith without

  1171. works is

  1172. dead faith.

  1173. No real

  1174. faith at all.

  1175. And this

  1176. last serpent

  1177. has nothing

  1178. to show

  1179. when the

  1180. master returns.

  1181. He did

  1182. nothing with

  1183. his meaning.

  1184. Is this

  1185. meaning?

  1186. Is this

  1187. meaning?

  1188. having

  1189. grown up

  1190. in a

  1191. time and

  1192. place where

  1193. the

  1194. gospel is

  1195. clearly

  1196. proclaimed,

  1197. when

  1198. scripture is

  1199. printed and

  1200. available in

  1201. our own

  1202. language,

  1203. if we just

  1204. click away

  1205. on our

  1206. smartphone,

  1207. we can

  1208. read the

  1209. very

  1210. word of

  1211. God,

  1212. whatever

  1213. and

  1214. whatever

  1215. we want.

  1216. When

  1217. scholarship

  1218. again and

  1219. again continues

  1220. to affirm

  1221. the gospel's

  1222. reliability,

  1223. when friends

  1224. and family

  1225. around us

  1226. are trusting

  1227. and following

  1228. Christ,

  1229. will we

  1230. have nothing

  1231. to show

  1232. for this

  1233. theme that

  1234. God has

  1235. given to

  1236. us?

  1237. Will we

  1238. not entrust

  1239. ourselves

  1240. wholeheartedly

  1241. to the

  1242. King?

  1243. God has

  1244. done it.

  1245. Amen.

  1246. And notice

  1247. something

  1248. important here.

  1249. This servant

  1250. disobeys his

  1251. master's wishes

  1252. and does no

  1253. business with

  1254. the man.

  1255. And then to

  1256. justify his

  1257. inactivity,

  1258. his rejection of

  1259. the nobleman's

  1260. wishes,

  1261. he creates a

  1262. defined picture

  1263. of the nobleman.

  1264. And what is

  1265. that creating

  1266. a picture

  1267. like?

  1268. Well,

  1269. this nobleman

  1270. in his mind

  1271. is harsh

  1272. and demanding

  1273. and he takes

  1274. when he didn't

  1275. have a cross

  1276. and he grieves

  1277. when he didn't

  1278. have a soul.

  1279. And of course

  1280. the nobleman's

  1281. generosity to

  1282. the previous

  1283. servants

  1284. for his

  1285. own.

  1286. And yet,

  1287. in this

  1288. servant's

  1289. mind,

  1290. this is the

  1291. picture he's

  1292. creating.

  1293. And this

  1294. picture of

  1295. the nobleman

  1296. that he

  1297. creates,

  1298. as severe

  1299. as the

  1300. bandit,

  1301. then allows

  1302. this servant

  1303. to blame

  1304. for his

  1305. exoesies.

  1306. Well,

  1307. he blames

  1308. the nobleman.

  1309. I was afraid

  1310. of you,

  1311. so I did

  1312. nothing.

  1313. Because you're

  1314. so hard.

  1315. Do you

  1316. notice the

  1317. hard dynamic

  1318. of sin

  1319. that Jesus

  1320. is laying

  1321. for us?

  1322. We

  1323. disobey.

  1324. We create

  1325. a false

  1326. image of

  1327. God that

  1328. justifies

  1329. our

  1330. disobedience.

  1331. And then

  1332. we use

  1333. that false

  1334. image to

  1335. turn and

  1336. put the

  1337. way back

  1338. on the

  1339. thought

  1340. of sin.

  1341. Do you

  1342. see that

  1343. dynamic in

  1344. your own

  1345. heart?

  1346. I know

  1347. I've seen

  1348. you mine

  1349. and it

  1350. should make

  1351. us

  1352. trouble.

  1353. And so

  1354. the lesson

  1355. we're going

  1356. to take

  1357. away from

  1358. this last

  1359. circle

  1360. is that

  1361. we must

  1362. make use

  1363. of

  1364. the

  1365. meaning

  1366. that

  1367. God

  1368. has

  1369. given us.

  1370. We must

  1371. not allow

  1372. the false

  1373. images of

  1374. God in

  1375. our minds

  1376. to us

  1377. from taking

  1378. advantage of

  1379. that gift

  1380. that God

  1381. has given.

  1382. It's not

  1383. enough to be a

  1384. Christian in

  1385. name only.

  1386. As verse 20

  1387. shows us,

  1388. if you look

  1389. there,

  1390. if we are a

  1391. Christian in

  1392. name only,

  1393. even that

  1394. name will be

  1395. taken away

  1396. from us.

  1397. not our

  1398. identity,

  1399. but in

  1400. living

  1401. relationship

  1402. with Jesus,

  1403. that's what

  1404. happens.

  1405. And how

  1406. do you

  1407. do that?

  1408. First,

  1409. something called

  1410. an evidence,

  1411. which is

  1412. admitting to

  1413. God

  1414. that you're

  1415. saying,

  1416. and then

  1417. saying,

  1418. trusting in

  1419. the Lord

  1420. Jesus'

  1421. life,

  1422. death,

  1423. and

  1424. resurrection

  1425. of the

  1426. world,

  1427. that you

  1428. are

  1429. not

  1430. in

  1431. trusting

  1432. yourself

  1433. to him

  1434. as your

  1435. business.

  1436. And for

  1437. those who

  1438. make that

  1439. step,

  1440. there is

  1441. also

  1442. a

  1443. right.

  1444. In

  1445. verses 16

  1446. through 19,

  1447. the servants

  1448. who had

  1449. occasion

  1450. visits

  1451. with the

  1452. masters

  1453. being in,

  1454. we find

  1455. them there.

  1456. They've

  1457. taken

  1458. their

  1459. message.

  1460. They've

  1461. stepped

  1462. out of

  1463. faith.

  1464. They've

  1465. come,

  1466. and they

  1467. come with

  1468. what they've

  1469. gained.

  1470. Some,

  1471. no doubt,

  1472. have been

  1473. hit through

  1474. hardship and

  1475. trial.

  1476. Some have

  1477. probably spent

  1478. sleepless nights

  1479. wandering

  1480. out when all

  1481. turnouts.

  1482. Some,

  1483. they have

  1484. lost friends

  1485. or family

  1486. members along

  1487. the way.

  1488. Some probably

  1489. made deep

  1490. sacrifices.

  1491. But at

  1492. last,

  1493. this day

  1494. of reckoning

  1495. comes.

  1496. And what we

  1497. have to see

  1498. in the

  1499. airport

  1500. is the

  1501. radical

  1502. generosity

  1503. of the

  1504. king.

  1505. I think

  1506. that it

  1507. was no

  1508. more than

  1509. three or

  1510. four months

  1511. of a

  1512. day

  1513. was

  1514. a

  1515. generation.

  1516. You know,

  1517. history tells

  1518. us,

  1519. I think it was

  1520. Mark Anthony,

  1521. history tells

  1522. us that when

  1523. Mark Anthony

  1524. tried to

  1525. reward his

  1526. soldier's

  1527. service,

  1528. he gave

  1529. them a

  1530. mina as

  1531. a gift.

  1532. And they

  1533. basically

  1534. mocked him

  1535. because he

  1536. was such

  1537. a small

  1538. man.

  1539. So he

  1540. had to

  1541. up his

  1542. gifts

  1543. over the

  1544. Lord.

  1545. Which goes

  1546. to show

  1547. that mina

  1548. was something

  1549. of that

  1550. much.

  1551. And yet

  1552. when these

  1553. servants

  1554. come before

  1555. their king,

  1556. some having

  1557. been ten

  1558. minas,

  1559. which was

  1560. not a

  1561. number of

  1562. return in

  1563. the first

  1564. century,

  1565. and some

  1566. having been

  1567. five minas,

  1568. what's the

  1569. reward?

  1570. In

  1571. return for

  1572. a minas,

  1573. run,

  1574. the servants

  1575. are rewarded

  1576. with the

  1577. rule over

  1578. whole cities.

  1579. The reward

  1580. is lavishly

  1581. disproportionate.

  1582. For the

  1583. small amount

  1584. they return,

  1585. they are

  1586. granted

  1587. unprecedented

  1588. dignity,

  1589. position,

  1590. importance,

  1591. and honor

  1592. in the

  1593. kingdom of

  1594. God.

  1595. I mean,

  1596. imagine,

  1597. if I gave

  1598. you,

  1599. let's say

  1600. I gave

  1601. you 3,000,

  1602. to invest.

  1603. No,

  1604. small amount

  1605. had a huge

  1606. amount of

  1607. money.

  1608. And you

  1609. came back

  1610. to me and

  1611. you said,

  1612. hey,

  1613. I actually

  1614. turned you

  1615. $3,000

  1616. into $10,000.

  1617. How do you

  1618. think about that?

  1619. What you

  1620. wouldn't expect

  1621. me to say,

  1622. great job,

  1623. you beat

  1624. the whole

  1625. city of

  1626. New England.

  1627. Just have

  1628. progress.

  1629. And that

  1630. is the

  1631. graciousness

  1632. of our

  1633. duty.

  1634. we are

  1635. saved by

  1636. grace,

  1637. and we

  1638. are

  1639. rewarded

  1640. in

  1641. grace.

  1642. You see,

  1643. what Jesus

  1644. wants us

  1645. to see

  1646. is that

  1647. the business

  1648. of discipleship,

  1649. the plans,

  1650. the risk,

  1651. the trials,

  1652. the hardship,

  1653. it will all

  1654. be worth it

  1655. for the king

  1656. of the

  1657. situation.

  1658. Amen.

  1659. even if you

  1660. feel as if

  1661. your demon

  1662. has gained

  1663. so little,

  1664. it is not

  1665. little in the

  1666. eyes of our

  1667. king.

  1668. If done in

  1669. love for him,

  1670. then it is

  1671. held in

  1672. greatest need.

  1673. It is worth

  1674. cities upon

  1675. cities in his

  1676. eyes.

  1677. grace.

  1678. So don't

  1679. hesitate to

  1680. give this

  1681. king your

  1682. all.

  1683. To live

  1684. your life

  1685. for him.

  1686. To plan,

  1687. to risk,

  1688. to suffer,

  1689. even to die

  1690. for him.

  1691. This is no

  1692. harsh,

  1693. severe,

  1694. tired,

  1695. despite what

  1696. that final

  1697. servant might

  1698. say,

  1699. or despite

  1700. what the

  1701. voice in

  1702. your head

  1703. might sometimes

  1704. want you to

  1705. hear,

  1706. this king's

  1707. heart is

  1708. abounding in

  1709. grace.

  1710. after all,

  1711. what gives

  1712. this king

  1713. the right

  1714. of the

  1715. church?

  1716. What is,

  1717. what is it

  1718. that Jesus

  1719. has done

  1720. that put

  1721. him to such

  1722. a place?

  1723. Look again

  1724. at verse 12,

  1725. the beginning

  1726. of Jesus'

  1727. paradigm.

  1728. The noble

  1729. that went

  1730. into a far

  1731. country to

  1732. receive her

  1733. himself.

  1734. A far

  1735. country.

  1736. Let's take

  1737. phrases used

  1738. in Luke 15

  1739. to Jesus'

  1740. parable of

  1741. the product

  1742. of the

  1743. son.

  1744. When the

  1745. elder son

  1746. leaves his

  1747. father,

  1748. he goes to

  1749. a far

  1750. country to

  1751. squander his

  1752. wealth.

  1753. And you

  1754. see,

  1755. Jesus too

  1756. would go

  1757. to the

  1758. far

  1759. country.

  1760. He would

  1761. go out

  1762. into the

  1763. far

  1764. country

  1765. where we

  1766. could

  1767. squander

  1768. them all

  1769. down into

  1770. our sin

  1771. and our

  1772. explosive

  1773. world.

  1774. And he

  1775. would go

  1776. out to

  1777. the far

  1778. country

  1779. of our

  1780. top

  1781. country

  1782. and our

  1783. rebellion.

  1784. And to the

  1785. far country

  1786. he would go

  1787. and it would

  1788. lead to

  1789. the cross.

  1790. And in that

  1791. far country

  1792. there, he

  1793. would lead

  1794. for himself

  1795. a kingdom.

  1796. no other

  1797. king, no

  1798. other religious

  1799. leader, no

  1800. other moral

  1801. teacher has

  1802. done what

  1803. Jesus did.

  1804. He alone

  1805. has gone

  1806. into the

  1807. far country

  1808. and found

  1809. him for

  1810. our sins.

  1811. He alone

  1812. has risen

  1813. again and

  1814. ascended to

  1815. the Father

  1816. and now

  1817. into a

  1818. seed

  1819. of

  1820. the

  1821. man.

  1822. This is

  1823. what gives

  1824. Jesus the

  1825. water to be

  1826. our

  1827. and to be

  1828. our

  1829. judge.

  1830. And to be

  1831. our

  1832. Lord.

  1833. Jesus did

  1834. what no

  1835. one expected

  1836. the Messiah

  1837. would do.

  1838. He died

  1839. on the

  1840. cross.

  1841. So that

  1842. we could

  1843. receive what

  1844. no one

  1845. expected

  1846. sinners

  1847. to receive.

  1848. What the

  1849. life

  1850. is

  1851. the

  1852. kingdom

  1853. of

  1854. the

  1855. world.

  1856. Let's

  1857. pray.

  1858. Lord Jesus

  1859. we pray

  1860. that you

  1861. would take

  1862. our life

  1863. and let

  1864. your

  1865. consecrated

  1866. soul

  1867. today.

  1868. Take our

  1869. moments,

  1870. take our

  1871. days,

  1872. Lord,

  1873. invite the

  1874. Holy Spirit

  1875. to let them

  1876. grow.

  1877. pray.

  1878. And when

  1879. we look

  1880. ahead to

  1881. your

  1882. return,

  1883. with the

  1884. right

  1885. expectation,

  1886. and so

  1887. we're ready

  1888. for that

  1889. great

  1890. thing.

  1891. We ask

  1892. this in

  1893. Christ's

  1894. love.
