  1. Jesus was not the first king to enter into Jerusalem.

  2. On a donkey.

  3. About a thousand years before him, at the end of the reign of King David, when he was old and frail and on his last days, there was a question in the land, who would be king?

  4. If you read the story in 1 Kings chapter 1, you see that one of David's sons, Adonijah, thought that there was an opportunity for him to take the throne, even though it had been promised to David's son Solomon.

    1 Kings 1 chapter mention

  5. David's faithful advisors alerted him to this usurping.

  6. And David sends Solomon to be brought into Jerusalem on the king's mule, as it says in verse 38.

  7. Verse 38.

  8. And the people rejoiced, and Solomon took the throne, and David's kingdom continued, at least for another generation, undivided.

  9. This is a historical backdrop to the passage that we come to this morning in our series in the book of Luke.

  10. As you know, beginning this January and going all the way to Easter, we're going to be preaching through the end of the book of Luke, from chapter 19 to chapter 24.

  11. We're going to be finishing up.

  12. And remember that, as Pastor Nick outlined last week, part of what we see in Luke is that chapter 9 through 19 is all about Jesus moving from the north in Galilee towards Jerusalem.

  13. In fact, nine times it is said, he's going to Jerusalem, he's going to Jerusalem, he's going to Jerusalem.

  14. And here, in our passage this morning, we see the final time it says he is going to Jerusalem.

  15. His destination is the city where the throne of David and the temple of God sit.

  16. This is the city that God had designated as central to his redemptive purposes in the world.

  17. Imagine for a moment what the expectations might have been in Jesus' day.

  18. Here he comes, the miracle worker who's brought healing and hope to many.

  19. He will come and renew our land.

  20. Here he comes to sit on David's throne as a political ruler to expel the hated Romans.

  21. Here he comes, a prophet like Moses, to renew the spiritual life and restore the glory of Israel.

  22. Expectations abounded as Jesus approached Jerusalem.

  23. And yet, for the writer Luke and for all of his readers, they would know that Jesus was heading not to a throne, not to a battlefield, but to a cross.

  24. In the meantime, Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and creates a crisis.

  25. As the text says, the hour of visitation has come for Jerusalem and a decision must be reached.

  26. How will Jesus be received?

  27. This is what our text leads us to this morning.

  28. We're in Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  29. If you're reading along in the Pew Bibles, it's in page 825.

  30. Luke 19, we're going to start in verse 28 and read to the end of the chapter.

  31. So let's read this together.

  32. And when he had said these things, he went on ahead going up to Jerusalem.

  33. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the mount that is called Olivet,

  34. he sent two of his disciples saying,

  35. Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied,

  36. on which no one has ever yet sat.

  37. Untie it and bring it here.

  38. If anyone asks you, why are you untying it?

  39. You shall say this, the Lord has need of it.

  40. So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them.

  41. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them,

  42. Why are you untying the colt?

  43. And they said, The Lord has need of it.

  44. And they brought it to Jesus.

  45. And throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.

  46. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.

  47. As he was drawing near, already on the way down the Mount of Olives,

  48. the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice

  49. for all the mighty works that they had seen,

  50. saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.

  51. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

  52. And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,

  53. Teacher, rebuke your disciples.

  54. And he answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.

  55. And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying,

  56. Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace.

  57. But now they are hidden from your eyes.

  58. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will set up a barricade round you

  59. and surround you and hem you in on every side

  60. and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you.

  61. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you

  62. because you did not know the time of your visitation.

  63. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,

  64. saying to them, It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer,

  65. but you have made it a den of robbers.

  66. And he was teaching daily in the temple.

  67. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people

  68. were seeking to destroy him.

  69. But they did not find anything they could do,

  70. for all the people were hanging on his words.

  71. This is God's word.

  72. Let's pray together.

  73. Lord, we thank you for this word,

  74. and we thank you for this morning and the opportunity to gather together

  75. to hear your word and to respond to you in worship and song.

  76. Lord, we ask for your Holy Spirit this morning

  77. to be at work in us.

  78. Lord, illuminating and making clear your word,

  79. applying it to our hearts,

  80. changing our minds,

  81. moving our hands to obedience.

  82. Lord, I ask for your help this morning,

  83. that I would speak clearly.

  84. Lord, that you would fill me with your Spirit,

  85. that your word might be proclaimed with truth and power.

  86. Lord, I ask for your help this morning.

  87. In Jesus' name.

  88. Amen.

  89. Amen.

  90. Amen.

  91. The King is here.

  92. That would be the New York Times Post back page headline.

  93. The King is here.

  94. But what would that mean,

  95. and what would the article say?

  96. Well, as we look at this passage

  97. and we think about what we see

  98. is that this passage shows us

  99. signs of the King coming

  100. and the crisis that the King brings

  101. as we look at our passage this morning.

  102. So, let's look at those things in turn.

  103. So, what are the signs of the King's coming

  104. that we see in this passage

  105. as Jesus and his disciples come into Jerusalem?

  106. First, let's look at what Jesus himself understood

  107. and the way that he gives signs

  108. that he is the King.

  109. And this brings us to the very beginning of the passage.

  110. Where they are geographically,

  111. just so you know,

  112. is that we are off to the east of Jerusalem

  113. on the far side of the Mount of Olives.

  114. And basically, to get from there to Jerusalem,

  115. you have to go up over through these towns

  116. and then come back down around

  117. to come into Jerusalem from the east.

  118. And so, that's where we are.

  119. And the first thing that we see

  120. is that Jesus sends his disciples to get the donkey.

  121. And if you look at the number of verses,

  122. this is a major part of the story.

  123. This donkey fills a good part of the whole thing.

  124. Why is it such a big deal?

  125. Well, because many Jews would know the words

  126. that were read earlier this morning

  127. from the prophet Zechariah.

  128. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.

  129. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem.

  130. Behold, your King is coming to you,

  131. righteous and having salvation as he,

  132. humble and mounted on a donkey,

  133. on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

  134. Zechariah was drawing from an idea

  135. that was actually even planted in the Old Testament

  136. even earlier in Genesis 49.

  137. When Jacob the patriarch is blessing his sons

  138. at the end of his life,

  139. in 49.11, he mentions to Judah

  140. that the scepter will stay in Judah's house

  141. and that a donkey or a colt

  142. will be one of the signs

  143. of the way that a son of Judah

  144. will take the throne of God's people

  145. in the future.

  146. So Jesus is intentionally drawing

  147. and pulling on these Old Testament imagery,

  148. these Old Testament predictions

  149. to say, I will ride into Jerusalem this day

  150. on a donkey.

  151. And it's not just any donkey, is it?

  152. Did you see what it said?

  153. It is a donkey that is unridden.

  154. No one has ever been on this donkey before.

  155. That might sound risky to you.

  156. It sounds risky to me.

  157. Who knows what this donkey is going to be like

  158. with a passenger.

  159. But, in fact,

  160. there is a meaning for this.

  161. For it is seen and is thought

  162. that an unbroken horse or donkey

  163. would be set apart,

  164. would be something special,

  165. that one who would ride on an unridden horse.

  166. This would be a place of honor

  167. and something special.

  168. To ride on a donkey

  169. that someone else had ridden on,

  170. that's normal, that's common.

  171. But to ride on one

  172. that has never been ridden on before,

  173. this is a donkey set apart.

  174. And this is a rider

  175. who is set apart wholly

  176. for a special use from the Lord.

  177. And as we have seen in Zechariah,

  178. it is also a sign of humility.

  179. He did not ride on a great war horse.

  180. He did not ride in

  181. at the head of a column of an army.

  182. But he came humbly on a donkey

  183. as he came.

  184. So the first sign

  185. is that Jesus intentionally

  186. fulfilled this prophecy

  187. to indicate that he knew

  188. he was coming as a king.

  189. But the second thing is that

  190. as he demanded this donkey,

  191. as he sent his disciples

  192. to get this donkey,

  193. he made a claim of ownership on it.

  194. Now, this might have been

  195. just a cultural understanding

  196. that dignitaries and people,

  197. traveling rabbis,

  198. might have the right

  199. to ask people for the loan

  200. of a donkey

  201. in a certain situation.

  202. But in fact, it seems

  203. that as you look carefully

  204. in the language,

  205. one of the things

  206. that's interesting is it says,

  207. and this is distinct in Luke

  208. because in Matthew,

  209. it just says,

  210. some people asked the disciples,

  211. why are you untying the donkey?

  212. But do you see who asks it here?

  213. It's the owner who asks.

  214. Why are you untying my donkey?

  215. Why are you driving my car

  216. out of my driveway?

  217. Where are you going with it?

  218. And the disciples,

  219. saying the words

  220. that Jesus had given them,

  221. the Lord,

  222. that is the owner,

  223. it's the same word,

  224. it's the same root,

  225. the owner has need of it.

  226. Jesus, as he's coming in,

  227. makes this very subtle

  228. but very clear claim,

  229. I am the owner of everything.

  230. And that is a claim

  231. to kingship

  232. in this cultural pattern.

  233. Jesus is saying,

  234. everything that you own,

  235. actually I am the owner

  236. of all of it.

  237. So, Jesus gives a sign

  238. of fulfillment of prophecy,

  239. he gives a sign

  240. of the assertion

  241. of his authority.

  242. And then finally,

  243. in verses 39 and 40,

  244. we see the first response

  245. that's negative

  246. to this whole thing.

  247. As Jesus is coming down

  248. from the Mount of Olives,

  249. as he's approaching Jerusalem,

  250. the Pharisees,

  251. the religious leaders,

  252. with whom he had had

  253. increasing conflict

  254. throughout his ministry,

  255. tell him to rebuke

  256. his disciples.

  257. For they feel that it's wrong.

  258. Jesus shouldn't be worshipped

  259. and praised in this way.

  260. He's just a man.

  261. To do this is misleading

  262. at best

  263. and destructive at worst.

  264. So, they tell him,

  265. rebuke your disciples.

  266. Don't.

  267. Tell them to stop.

  268. And Jesus' response,

  269. striking, isn't it?

  270. No, I tell you

  271. that even if these were silent,

  272. the stones themselves

  273. would cry out in praise.

  274. I tell you,

  275. if the lips of men and women

  276. were somehow stopped,

  277. creation itself

  278. would rise up

  279. to recognize me

  280. as the king.

  281. Jesus pushes back

  282. on their rebuke

  283. and says,

  284. it is right

  285. that they worship me

  286. like this.

  287. I am worthy

  288. of their praise.

  289. I am the king

  290. who was coming

  291. to sit on the throne

  292. of David.

  293. The signs

  294. that Jesus has come

  295. to claim this kingship,

  296. this messiahship,

  297. this rulership

  298. are actually

  299. multiple

  300. and multifaceted

  301. in this passage.

  302. If you've ever

  303. heard someone say,

  304. well, Jesus didn't

  305. really claim

  306. to be anything

  307. more than a good teacher,

  308. this passage

  309. shows something different.

  310. And the Jesus

  311. who rode into Jerusalem

  312. that day

  313. is the same Jesus

  314. who comes into

  315. our lives today

  316. to claim worship.

  317. He comes

  318. to say,

  319. I am the king

  320. of all.

  321. Will you receive me?

  322. And the Jesus,

  323. as he comes in,

  324. it's complex,

  325. isn't it?

  326. He's not

  327. what we expect.

  328. Jesus comes

  329. as a humble king.

  330. Now,

  331. I like that.

  332. I like someone

  333. who doesn't just

  334. run roughshod over me.

  335. He comes in

  336. in humility

  337. and invites me

  338. to come

  339. and says,

  340. come all ye

  341. who are weary

  342. and heavy laden.

  343. He comes in

  344. riding on a donkey,

  345. not on a horse.

  346. that sounds great.

  347. I can submit

  348. to a king like that.

  349. He also comes

  350. as one

  351. who claims

  352. the worship

  353. of all of creation.

  354. And that's a little

  355. scarier,

  356. but I still like it

  357. because he's the lord

  358. over all the enemies

  359. and the things

  360. that are scary

  361. in this world

  362. that to me

  363. are scary.

  364. Suddenly,

  365. he comes

  366. and he claims lordship

  367. over all of that

  368. and I think,

  369. whew,

  370. that's comforting too.

  371. That's a king

  372. that I want to follow.

  373. That's a king

  374. I want to worship.

  375. But then Jesus comes

  376. and he meddles.

  377. He meddles in my life.

  378. When I was a new believer,

  379. someone gave me

  380. a little booklet

  381. by a guy named

  382. Robert Munger,

  383. My Heart,

  384. Christ's Home.

  385. Maybe you've heard of it.

  386. It's still worth reading.

  387. Talks about the process

  388. of when Jesus comes in.

  389. You invite Jesus

  390. into your house

  391. and how he comes in

  392. and he sort of

  393. takes up residence

  394. and then he starts

  395. wandering around

  396. and he starts

  397. finding those rooms

  398. that you'd rather him

  399. not find

  400. and the closet

  401. that you locked

  402. really tightly

  403. to make sure

  404. that he couldn't get in.

  405. Jesus comes

  406. and he meddles

  407. in our lives

  408. and he claims

  409. a lordship

  410. and a kingship

  411. in places

  412. where maybe

  413. we don't want him

  414. to be.

  415. You know,

  416. in the history

  417. of the church,

  418. we've talked about

  419. three of the great

  420. dynamics

  421. of human life

  422. are money,

  423. sex,

  424. and power

  425. and Jesus comes in

  426. and he says,

  427. your money,

  428. I own it all

  429. and what I've given

  430. to you,

  431. I'm loaning to you

  432. to use.

  433. It's not yours.

  434. I'm giving it to you

  435. so you can use it

  436. to worship

  437. and honor me.

  438. He says the same thing

  439. with our sex lives.

  440. This glorious gift

  441. that he's given us

  442. says this isn't for you

  443. ultimately.

  444. This is for me.

  445. Use it

  446. to honor me

  447. in abstinence

  448. and in exercise

  449. according to how

  450. I have determined it

  451. to be used.

  452. power.

  453. This is one

  454. we don't talk about

  455. nearly as much

  456. in our world today

  457. but let me think

  458. about it this way.

  459. Help you think about it.

  460. How is it that you

  461. use the authority

  462. that you have

  463. over other people

  464. and how is it

  465. that you respond

  466. to other people

  467. who have authority

  468. over you?

  469. Some of you

  470. are still

  471. young

  472. living in your

  473. parents' house.

  474. Children

  475. talking to you.

  476. Jesus says

  477. because I am the king

  478. of your life

  479. I am calling you

  480. to think about

  481. how you respond

  482. well to the authorities

  483. in your life.

  484. Honor me

  485. by honoring your parents

  486. and obeying them.

  487. Parents

  488. teachers

  489. in your workplaces

  490. all of us

  491. have various places

  492. where we exercise

  493. authority over people

  494. even as a customer

  495. in a store

  496. we exercise

  497. a kind of authority.

  498. How do we use that

  499. to honor

  500. Jesus?

  501. We often want

  502. to use people

  503. to serve our ends.

  504. Jesus wants us

  505. to serve people

  506. to further

  507. his ends.

  508. Jesus comes in

  509. as a humble king

  510. that sounds great

  511. as the king

  512. of the universe

  513. that sounds a little

  514. comforting too

  515. but ultimately

  516. he comes

  517. and he meddles

  518. in places

  519. that unseat

  520. the very sense

  521. of self

  522. that we have.

  523. He says

  524. I want to be king

  525. of that.

  526. The Pharisees

  527. felt threatened

  528. because their

  529. spiritual identities

  530. were at

  531. were being called

  532. to being submitted

  533. to Jesus

  534. and they didn't

  535. want to do that.

  536. And friends

  537. if you haven't felt

  538. that wrestling

  539. if you haven't

  540. gone through

  541. that tug of war

  542. with Jesus

  543. about some part

  544. of your life yet

  545. then I don't know

  546. if you've reckoned

  547. with Jesus

  548. coming as your king.

  549. Maybe you haven't

  550. yet really grappled

  551. with those places

  552. where he wants

  553. to come

  554. and meddle.

  555. Meddle for your good

  556. and meddle

  557. for his glory.

  558. So the signs

  559. that Jesus gives

  560. are clear

  561. but then

  562. it's not just him

  563. who affirms

  564. that Jesus

  565. comes in

  566. as a claiming

  567. to be king

  568. but his disciples

  569. also honor him

  570. as a king.

  571. As you look

  572. at this

  573. and this is well

  574. known

  575. you guys know

  576. this

  577. they take

  578. their cloaks

  579. and they put

  580. it on the donkey

  581. because no king

  582. would ride

  583. a horse

  584. that is unsaddled

  585. and uncovered.

  586. And so they cover

  587. the donkey

  588. so that

  589. and interestingly

  590. did you notice

  591. Jesus didn't

  592. hop on the donkey

  593. he didn't climb up

  594. onto the donkey

  595. but they took him

  596. and they set him

  597. on the donkey.

  598. It says

  599. his disciples

  600. put him there

  601. in the place

  602. of honor

  603. and then they

  604. laid their coats

  605. down on the road

  606. before this donkey

  607. in a cultural pattern

  608. of showing

  609. this man

  610. is so high

  611. and so honored

  612. he doesn't

  613. it would be wrong

  614. for him

  615. to simply walk

  616. on the dusty path

  617. that we common

  618. people do.

  619. He needs to be

  620. exalted

  621. and so we cover

  622. it's rolling out

  623. the red carpet

  624. so that your ball gown

  625. will be clean

  626. as you enter

  627. the opera.

  628. Rolling out

  629. the red carpet

  630. so that when

  631. the king comes

  632. he won't have to

  633. walk through

  634. the everyday

  635. dirt and grime

  636. but he will be

  637. honored and exalted

  638. in these things.

  639. Not only do they

  640. use their coats

  641. and set Jesus

  642. up on this donkey

  643. like a football coach

  644. right at the end

  645. of the game

  646. lifting him up

  647. in praise

  648. but then they use

  649. their words

  650. as well.

  651. Look with me

  652. in verse 38

  653. blessed is the king

  654. who comes

  655. in the name

  656. of the Lord

  657. peace in heaven

  658. and glory

  659. in the highest.

  660. And any Jew

  661. in the first century

  662. would recognize

  663. that this is a quote

  664. from Psalm 118

    Psalms 118:26

  665. verse 26

  666. blessed is he

  667. who comes

  668. in the name

  669. of the Lord

  670. we bless you

  671. from the house

  672. of the Lord

  673. this would have been

  674. a common phrase

  675. that would have been

  676. used particularly

  677. as pilgrims

  678. would come

  679. to the temple

  680. courtyard

  681. during the high

  682. seasons

  683. during the feast

  684. of tabernacles

  685. or during the Passover

  686. they would come

  687. in and at times

  688. perhaps they would

  689. be led by the king

  690. and this phrase

  691. would come

  692. from the priests

  693. to the king

  694. and the pilgrims

  695. coming to the temple

  696. to worship God

  697. blessed is he

  698. who comes

  699. in the name

  700. of the Lord

  701. blessed is he

  702. who comes

  703. to worship

  704. and to honor

  705. God

  706. in his temple

  707. and Luke

  708. records them

  709. as adjusting

  710. the phrase

  711. by saying

  712. explicitly

  713. not blessed

  714. is he

  715. but blessed

  716. is the king

  717. who comes

  718. in the name

  719. of the Lord

  720. the disciples

  721. themselves

  722. were willing

  723. to say

  724. this is him

  725. this is the one

  726. we've been waiting

  727. for

  728. this is the one

  729. who's going

  730. to sit

  731. on the throne

  732. of David

  733. and restore

  734. the glory

  735. of Israel

  736. and then they

  737. go on

  738. and say

  739. peace in heaven

  740. and glory

  741. in the highest

  742. and if you

  743. were a careful

  744. reader of this book

  745. those phrases

  746. would jump

  747. off the pages

  748. in you

  749. because way

  750. back at the beginning

  751. when the coming

  752. of Jesus

  753. to earth

  754. as a baby

  755. was announced

  756. the angel

  757. speaking to Mary

  758. said this

  759. he will be great

  760. and will be called

  761. the son of the most high

  762. and the Lord God

  763. will give him

  764. the throne

  765. of his father

  766. David

  767. and he will reign

  768. over the house

  769. of Jacob forever

  770. and of his kingdom

  771. there will be

  772. no end

  773. and then

  774. when the angels

  775. announced

  776. to the shepherds

  777. in the field

  778. they said

  779. glory to God

  780. in the highest

  781. and on earth

  782. peace

  783. among those

  784. with whom

  785. he is well pleased

  786. and these phrases

  787. though not quoted

  788. would resonate

  789. with what had happened

  790. 30 some years ago

  791. that when Jesus

  792. came

  793. there was this

  794. grand

  795. and spectacular

  796. announcement

  797. that something

  798. unique

  799. and special

  800. had happened

  801. that the

  802. the long

  803. awaited

  804. deliverer

  805. had come

  806. and now

  807. 30 years later

  808. his disciples

  809. pick up these words

  810. to say

  811. this is the one

  812. they had seen

  813. his mighty works

  814. the healing

  815. of the blind

  816. and the lame

  817. the deliverance

  818. of some

  819. from the

  820. control

  821. of demonic

  822. forces

  823. they'd seen

  824. him teach

  825. with authority

  826. unlike the scribes

  827. and Pharisees

  828. they had seen

  829. him providing

  830. feeding

  831. multitudes

  832. and showing

  833. compassion

  834. on them

  835. they had seen

  836. him honoring

  837. the outcasts

  838. the women

  839. the unclean

  840. the gentiles

  841. expanding

  842. the kingdom

  843. of God

  844. and they

  845. worshipped him

  846. for his mighty

  847. deeds

  848. and they did it

  849. with this

  850. grand

  851. parade

  852. this grand

  853. symbolic

  854. parade

  855. with praising

  856. and donkeys

  857. and coats

  858. on the ground

  859. and all

  860. of the resonance

  861. of Solomon

  862. coming in

  863. long ago

  864. I've never been

  865. to Jerusalem

  866. but reading

  867. about this

  868. approach

  869. it sounds like

  870. this road

  871. would have been

  872. a beautiful road

  873. to travel

  874. it would have

  875. gone up

  876. to Bethphage

  877. near the top

  878. of the Mount

  879. of Olives

  880. and then come

  881. back down

  882. towards Bethany

  883. and then come

  884. around the corner

  885. and then Jerusalem

  886. would have lay

  887. in the valley

  888. below them

  889. and as they're

  890. praising God

  891. and as he approaches

  892. goes down

  893. into the Kidron Valley

  894. before he would

  895. go up to the gates

  896. of Jerusalem

  897. the hills

  898. would resound

  899. with this praise

  900. and this celebration

  901. and this glory

  902. like the ticker tape

  903. parade in New York City

  904. after a championship

  905. win

  906. like the duck

  907. boats in Boston

  908. but even better

  909. the King of David

  910. sitting on a donkey

  911. coming into Jerusalem

  912. I wonder

  913. I wonder what you

  914. would feel like

  915. about being a part

  916. of a parade today

  917. to honor Jesus

  918. I wonder how you

  919. feel about others

  920. who are

  921. kind of embarrassing

  922. in the way

  923. that they talk

  924. about Jesus

  925. all the time

  926. sometimes fear

  927. that we have

  928. an overly

  929. privatized

  930. sense

  931. of religion

  932. and worship

  933. in our world

  934. today

  935. now look

  936. we need to be wise

  937. and there's nuance

  938. to claim the name

  939. of Christian

  940. today

  941. doesn't mean

  942. what it used

  943. to mean

  944. it's become

  945. a very broad

  946. word

  947. that describes

  948. many people

  949. who don't believe

  950. in the Bible

  951. or the deity

  952. of Christ

  953. and even

  954. in the last

  955. 20 years

  956. the word

  957. evangelical

  958. has become

  959. more fraught

  960. it's become

  961. more of a

  962. political term

  963. for many people

  964. and more of a

  965. political identity

  966. and ideology

  967. for some

  968. so there's nuance

  969. in thinking

  970. about how do we

  971. identify

  972. and celebrate

  973. Jesus

  974. publicly

  975. but friends

  976. are we so afraid

  977. of being misunderstood

  978. that we hold back

  979. where his disciples

  980. exalted

  981. and gloried

  982. and praised

  983. Jesus was so often

  984. misunderstood

  985. in fact

  986. even in this

  987. Jesus was misunderstood

  988. even by those

  989. who were praising him

  990. let alone those

  991. who opposed him

  992. for many of his

  993. disciples would run

  994. later this week

  995. let alone the crowds

  996. who would join

  997. into this procession

  998. but then later

  999. be swayed

  1000. in other directions

  1001. Jesus was often

  1002. misunderstood

  1003. the cost of identifying

  1004. with Jesus

  1005. will always

  1006. be great

  1007. at some point

  1008. my kids like

  1009. watching the

  1010. story keepers

  1011. have you ever seen

  1012. the story keepers

  1013. they're on YouTube

1014. if you haven't seen them

  1015. it's this really cool

  1016. cartoon that was

  1017. done in the 90s

  1018. about life

  1019. in early church

  1020. and how people

  1021. honored

  1022. and

  1023. it talks about

  1024. how they were

  1025. both hiding

  1026. and yet

  1027. very open

  1028. about their faith

  1029. it's actually

  1030. a beautiful

  1031. portrayal

  1032. I think

  1033. it's fictional

  1034. but it's

  1035. it's worth

  1036. seeing

  1037. if you have

  1038. kids

  1039. probably under

  1040. the age of 11

  1041. so

  1042. after that

  1043. it's valuable

  1044. but probably not

  1045. compelling for you

  1046. so

  1047. but

  1048. but it's a picture

  1049. of how they

  1050. love Jesus

  1051. and were willing

  1052. to be wise

  1053. and yet

  1054. very clear

  1055. about their

  1056. allegiance

  1057. and the

  1058. costliness

  1059. of identifying

  1060. with Christ

  1061. having the

  1062. privilege of

  1063. having lived

  1064. in China

  1065. for two years

  1066. and knowing

  1067. some national

  1068. believers there

  1069. seeing them

  1070. count the cost

  1071. societally

  1072. in their own

  1073. homes

  1074. and in their

  1075. own families

  1076. knowing that

  1077. to identify

  1078. publicly

  1079. as a believer

  1080. could cost

  1081. them

  1082. job

  1083. prospects

  1084. marriage

  1085. prospects

  1086. even

  1087. their own

  1088. homes

  1089. being

  1090. misunderstood

  1091. in all

  1092. of these

  1093. cases

  1094. and yet

  1095. being willing

  1096. to identify

  1097. with Christ

  1098. here

  1099. closer to

  1100. home

  1101. we live

  1102. in a

  1103. world

  1104. particularly

  1105. I will say

  1106. the world

  1107. of academia

  1108. where

  1109. for some

  1110. identification

  1111. with Christ

  1112. will bear

  1113. a great

  1114. cost

  1115. and it's

  1116. easy to

  1117. hide

  1118. it's easy

  1119. to live

  1120. in fear

  1121. and the

  1122. day may come

  1123. when our

  1124. society

  1125. will shed

  1126. more of

  1127. its

  1128. Christian

  1129. trappings

  1130. and where

  1131. it will be

  1132. costly

  1133. for all

  1134. of us

  1135. to publicly

  1136. identify

  1137. with Christ

  1138. and to

  1139. worship

  1140. him

  1141. but the

  1142. disciples

  1143. gladly

  1144. did so

  1145. God

  1146. because

  1147. they saw

  1148. their

  1149. king

  1150. and they

  1151. saw that

  1152. he was

  1153. worthy

  1154. of their

  1155. praise

  1156. he was

  1157. worthy

  1158. of their

  1159. adoration

  1160. he was

  1161. worthy

  1162. of them

  1163. laying down

  1164. their coats

  1165. and laying

  1166. down their

  1167. lives

  1168. and they

  1169. didn't even

  1170. understand all

  1171. that that

  1172. would mean

  1173. they didn't

  1174. really understand

  1175. that Jesus

  1176. was heading

  1177. to the cross

  1178. they didn't

  1179. understand all

  1180. of those

  1181. things

  1182. and yet

  1183. as we

  1184. will see

  1185. by the

  1186. end of

  1187. Luke

  1188. the

  1189. disciples

  1190. will

  1191. understand

  1192. and many

  1193. will still

  1194. do the

  1195. same

  1196. they will

  1197. follow him

  1198. and worship

  1199. him

  1200. so what

  1201. about you

  1202. how unabashed

  1203. is your

  1204. worship

  1205. of Jesus

  1206. to ask

  1207. that question

  1208. creates a

  1209. crisis

  1210. does it

  1211. not

  1212. at the

  1213. very end

  1214. of our

  1215. passage

  1216. we see

  1217. that Jesus

  1218. coming

  1219. creates

  1220. a crisis

  1221. for all

  1222. of us

  1223. as we

  1224. see in

  1225. verses 41

  1226. and following

  1227. as he

  1228. comes

  1229. around the

  1230. corner

  1231. and sees

  1232. Jerusalem

  1233. he stops

  1234. and he

  1235. weeps

  1236. and he

  1237. mourns

  1238. because he

  1239. sees them

  1240. and he

  1241. knows

  1242. that there

  1243. will be

  1244. some

  1245. who will

  1246. reject him

  1247. he knows

  1248. in fact

  1249. that this

  1250. city

  1251. as a

  1252. whole

  1253. will not

  1254. receive him

  1255. as the

  1256. king

  1257. and put him

  1258. on the

  1259. throne

  1260. of David

  1261. but that

  1262. he

  1263. will be

  1264. rejected

  1265. he

  1266. predicts

  1267. that

  1268. because

  1269. of their

  1270. rejection

  1271. there will

  1272. ultimately

  1273. be a

  1274. judgment

  1275. he

  1276. predicts

  1277. and says

  1278. the time

  1279. is coming

  1280. when the

  1281. Romans

  1282. will come

  1283. and raise

  1284. this city

  1285. and in fact

  1286. that's exactly

  1287. what happened

  1288. in AD

  1289. 70

  1290. Titus

  1291. came in

  1292. and he

  1293. literally

  1294. tore down

  1295. every wall

  1296. every building

  1297. according to

  1298. the records

  1299. he left

  1300. three towers

  1301. of the

  1302. entire city

  1303. standing

  1304. solely so

  1305. that people

  1306. would know

  1307. that there

  1308. had been

  1309. a city

  1310. there

  1311. because if

  1312. he had

  1313. taken those

  1314. down

  1315. literally

  1316. it would

  1317. have looked

  1318. like there

  1319. had never

  1320. been a

  1321. city

  1322. the destruction

  1323. was complete

  1324. and Jesus

  1325. looked at

  1326. this city

  1327. and he

  1328. knew that

  1329. his coming

  1330. would provoke

  1331. a crisis

  1332. of belief

  1333. and he

  1334. knew that

  1335. many

  1336. did not

  1337. know

  1338. and would

  1339. not respond

  1340. to the

  1341. day of

  1342. his visitation

  1343. with faith

  1344. and from

  1345. there then

  1346. Luke records

  1347. he goes

  1348. into

  1349. Jerusalem

  1350. and he

  1351. goes to

  1352. the temple

  1353. and he

  1354. creates

  1355. another

  1356. crisis

  1357. by walking

  1358. in

  1359. and blowing

  1360. up an

  1361. economic

  1362. system

  1363. that had

  1364. served

  1365. the worship

  1366. at the

  1367. expense

  1368. of the

  1369. worship

  1370. of God

  1371. Luke

  1372. is very

  1373. brief

  1374. on this

  1375. Matthew

  1376. John

  1377. other people

  1378. have much

  1379. more to say

  1380. about this

  1381. but he

  1382. goes in

  1383. and he

  1384. creates

  1385. this

  1386. crisis

  1387. my

  1388. father's

  1389. house

  1390. should be

  1391. a house

  1392. of prayer

  1393. but you

  1394. have made

  1395. it

  1396. a place

  1397. of commerce

  1398. and then

  1399. Luke

  1400. ends

  1401. this

  1402. section

  1403. verse

  1404. 47

  1405. and 48

  1406. he was

  1407. teaching

  1408. daily

  1409. in the

  1410. temple

  1411. and you

  1412. see the

  1413. division

  1414. the chief

  1415. priests

  1416. and the

  1417. scribes

  1418. and the

  1419. principal

  1420. men

  1421. of the

  1422. people

  1423. were seeking

  1424. to destroy

  1425. him

  1426. those who

  1427. had lots

  1428. lots of

  1429. power

  1430. lots of

  1431. prestige

  1432. lots of

  1433. religious

  1434. authority

  1435. they had

  1436. lots

  1437. to lose

  1438. and in

  1439. that

  1440. they

  1441. resisted

  1442. Jesus

  1443. coming

  1444. and they

  1445. sought

  1446. instead

  1447. to destroy

  1448. him

  1449. verse 48

  1450. but they

  1451. did not

  1452. find anything

  1453. they could

  1454. do

  1455. for all

  1456. the people

  1457. were hanging

  1458. on his

  1459. words

  1460. the people

  1461. saw him

  1462. and they

  1463. responded

  1464. to him

  1465. and they

  1466. were hanging

  1467. and yet

  1468. we know

  1469. these are

  1470. the same

  1471. people

  1472. who will

  1473. be fickle

  1474. and Jesus

  1475. knows these

  1476. are the

  1477. same

  1478. people

  1479. who will

  1480. be fickle

  1481. but he

  1482. comes in

  1483. and he

  1484. creates a

  1485. crisis

  1486. such that

  1487. everyone who

  1488. encounters

  1489. this Jesus

  1490. in Jerusalem

  1491. when he

  1492. first entered

  1493. and every

  1494. one of us

  1495. today as we

  1496. encounter this

  1497. Jesus in

  1498. this text

  1499. have to

  1500. respond

  1501. who will

  1502. be king

  1503. this was

  1504. the question

  1505. that was

  1506. asked in

  1507. Solomon's

  1508. day

  1509. will it

  1510. be Solomon

  1511. or will

  1512. it be

  1513. Adonijah

  1514. for us

  1515. who will

  1516. be king

  1517. will you

  1518. deny

  1519. Jesus

  1520. his claim

  1521. on your

  1522. life

  1523. or will

  1524. you receive

  1525. him

  1526. knowing

  1527. knowing

  1528. that he

  1529. is a

  1530. king

  1531. who will

  1532. ultimately

  1533. earn his

  1534. throne

  1535. by going

  1536. to the

  1537. cross

  1538. and dying

  1539. for sinful

  1540. rebellious

  1541. stubborn

  1542. independent

  1543. hearts

  1544. like mine

  1545. and like

  1546. yours

  1547. he who

  1548. came

  1549. to establish

  1550. his kingship

  1551. not by imposing

  1552. it upon us

  1553. but by offering

  1554. himself up

  1555. for us

  1556. and ultimately

  1557. he would gain

  1558. great victory

  1559. because he would

  1560. rise from the

  1561. dead

  1562. and he would

  1563. ascend to the

  1564. father

  1565. and he would

  1566. sit at his

  1567. right hand

  1568. and we know

  1569. from the rest

  1570. of scripture

  1571. that one day

  1572. he will come

  1573. again

  1574. and he will

  1575. establish his

  1576. kingdom

  1577. and he will

  1578. sit on the

  1579. throne

  1580. and all

  1581. will bow

  1582. their knee

  1583. before this

  1584. king

  1585. Jesus

  1586. today

  1587. is the day

  1588. of visitation

  1589. for all

  1590. who hear

  1591. this text

  1592. in Jerusalem

  1593. in the first

  1594. century

  1595. this was the

  1596. first time

  1597. in a

  1598. one time

  1599. thing

  1600. in redemption

  1601. history

  1602. but today

  1603. this is the

  1604. day for us

  1605. to consider

  1606. the day

  1607. of our

  1608. visitation

  1609. for Jesus

  1610. has come

  1611. for us

  1612. he has

  1613. come for

  1614. you

  1615. what will

  1616. you do

  1617. with this

  1618. king

  1619. let's pray

  1620. Lord we

  1621. are humbled

  1622. and

  1623. challenged

  1624. by this

  1625. text

  1626. we thank

  1627. you

  1628. for

  1629. your

  1630. word

  1631. penetrates

  1632. our

  1633. hearts

  1634. Lord I

  1635. ask this

  1636. morning

  1637. that we

  1638. would not

  1639. resist your

  1640. Holy Spirit

  1641. as you

  1642. may be

  1643. working

  1644. in us

  1645. Lord if

  1646. there are

  1647. those of

  1648. us here

  1649. this

  1650. morning

  1651. who

  1652. have

  1653. areas

  1654. of our

  1655. lives

  1656. that we

  1657. have

  1658. not yet

  1659. allowed

  1660. you

  1661. to be

  1662. king

  1663. Lord

  1664. that we

  1665. would respond

  1666. to you

  1667. in faith

  1668. and surrender

  1669. those to

  1670. you

  1671. and allow

  1672. you to

  1673. begin to

  1674. reorder

  1675. these parts

  1676. of our

  1677. lives

  1678. according to

  1679. your plan

  1680. and for

  1681. your glory

  1682. Lord I

  1683. pray this

  1684. morning

  1685. for those

  1686. here who

  1687. may have

  1688. realized that

  1689. they have

  1690. never truly

  1691. bowed their

  1692. knee before

  1693. you as

  1694. king

  1695. they have

  1696. liked you

  1697. as a

  1698. teacher

  1699. they have

  1700. been

  1701. comforted

  1702. by you

  1703. as a

  1704. counselor

  1705. but Lord

  1706. they have

  1707. never now

  1708. bowed their

  1709. knee before

  1710. you

  1711. I pray

  1712. Lord

  1713. you would

  1714. help them

  1715. now

  1716. to kneel

  1717. before you

  1718. Lord

  1719. that their

  1720. repentance

  1721. would go

  1722. to the

  1723. depth of

  1724. their

  1725. being

  1726. Lord

  1727. that they

  1728. would repent

  1729. of themselves

  1730. sitting on

  1731. the throne

  1732. of their

  1733. lives

  1734. and receive

  1735. you

  1736. instead

  1737. as their

  1738. savior

  1739. who has

  1740. dealt with

  1741. sin on

  1742. their behalf

  1743. and as

  1744. their king

  1745. who has

  1746. come to

  1747. rule

  1748. Lord we

  1749. pray that

  1750. you would

  1751. do these

  1752. things

  1753. for the

  1754. glory of

  1755. your name

  1756. that your

  1757. salvation

  1758. would be

  1759. seen

  1760. and known

  1761. and proclaimed

  1762. and that

  1763. songs of

  1764. praise would

  1765. ring out

  1766. to the

  1767. ends of

  1768. the earth

  1769. we pray

  1770. this in

  1771. Jesus name

  1772. amen
