  1. Well, good morning again, church.

  2. Our sermon passage today is Luke chapter 21, starting in verse 5.

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  3. That's page 827 in the Pew Bible.

  4. Let me invite you to turn there with me.

  5. Luke 21, page 827.

  6. This winter and spring, we're walking passage by passage through the last third of the Gospel of Luke.

  7. And in our text today, Jesus is going to teach us about the future.

  8. Now, if you think about it, we spend a lot of time living now in light of what's to come, don't we?

  9. You know, for example, we go to school now because in the future we want to get a job.

  10. Or we maybe save and invest our income now because in the future we want to retire.

  11. Or we draft a will.

  12. Or we do the hard work of repairing broken relationships now because in the future we want our loved ones to remember us well.

  13. But what if there was a way to live now in light of our ultimate future?

  14. In other words, how should we live now spiritually in light of God's future, our ultimate horizon?

  15. That's what Jesus is going to teach us in Luke 21.

  16. So let me pray and then I'll read this passage for us.

  17. Let's pray together.

  18. Father, it's right for us to pause before coming to your word and to pray for illumination.

  19. To pray that you by your spirit would give light to our finite minds, to our weak minds.

  20. Father, help us above all to know you better through your son Jesus and your unending love as we consider this text.

  21. It's in his name, the name above all names that we pray.

  22. Amen.

  23. All right.

  24. Luke 21, verses 5 through 38.

    Luke 21:5–38

  25. Let me read this long text for us.

  26. And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he, that is Jesus said,

  27. As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

  28. And they asked him, Teacher, when will these things be?

  29. And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?

  30. And he said, See that you are not led astray.

  31. For many will come in my name, saying, I am he, and the time is at hand.

  32. Do not go after them.

  33. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified.

  34. For these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.

  35. Then he said to them, Nation will rise against nation, kingdom against kingdom.

  36. There will be great earthquakes and in various places famines and pestilences.

  37. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

  38. But before all this, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you,

  39. delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons,

  40. and you will be brought before kings and governors for my namesake.

  41. This will be your opportunity to bear witness.

  42. Settle it, therefore, in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,

  43. for I will give you a mouth and wisdom,

  44. which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

  45. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends,

  46. and some of you they will put to death.

  47. You will be hated by all for my namesake,

  48. but not a hair of your head will perish.

  49. By your endurance, you will gain your lives.

  50. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,

  51. then know that its desolation has come near.

  52. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,

  53. and let those who are inside the city depart,

  54. and let not those who are out in the country enter it,

  55. for these are days of vengeance to fulfill all that is written.

  56. Alas, for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days,

  57. for there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people,

  58. that will fall by the edge of the sword and be like captive among all nations,

  59. and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles,

  60. until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

  61. And there will be signs in sun, moon, and stars,

  62. and on the earth distress of nations and perplexity,

  63. because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,

  64. people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world.

  65. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken,

  66. and then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

  67. Now when these things begin to take place,

  68. straighten up and raise your heads,

  69. because your redemption is drawing near.

  70. And he told them a parable.

  71. Look at the fig tree and all the trees.

  72. As soon as they come out in leaf,

  73. you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near.

  74. So also when you see these things taking place,

  75. you know that the kingdom of God is near.

  76. Truly I say to you,

  77. this generation will not pass away until all has taken place.

  78. Heaven and earth will pass away,

  79. but my words will not pass away.

  80. But watch yourselves,

  81. lest your hearts be weighed down

  82. with dissipation and drunkenness

  83. and cares of this life.

  84. And that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.

  85. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

  86. But stay awake at all times,

  87. praying that you may have strength to escape all these things

  88. that are going to take place.

  89. And to stand before the Son of Man.

  90. And every day he was teaching in the temple.

  91. But at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet.

  92. And early in the morning,

  93. all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

  94. Well,

  95. it's easy in a long and intricate passage like this

  96. to lose the forest for the trees,

  97. to major on the minors,

  98. and to miss the main things

  99. that Jesus wants us to know.

  100. So, in order to try to keep our focus on the main things,

  101. I want us to see that Jesus here talks about two events,

  102. one encouragement,

  103. and one warning.

  104. He gives us two events,

  105. one encouragement,

  106. and one warning

  107. as we seek to live now

  108. in light of God's future.

  109. So, first,

  110. what's the first event?

  111. Well, the first event that Jesus talks about here

  112. is right in the opening of the passage.

  113. The destruction of Jerusalem in the temple.

  114. Look again at verses five and six.

  115. And while some were speaking of the temple,

  116. how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings,

  117. Jesus said,

  118. as for these things that you see,

  119. the days will come

  120. when there will not be left here

  121. one stone upon another

  122. that will not be thrown down.

  123. Now, when Jesus spoke those words

  124. around 33 AD,

  125. they may have struck some of his listeners

  126. as hard to believe.

  127. You see, the temple complex in Jerusalem

  128. in Jesus' day was massive.

  129. For the past 50 years,

  130. beginning with Herod the Great,

  131. the temple complex

  132. had been under constant construction

  133. and enlargement and beautification.

  134. The whole structure,

  135. the temple itself

  136. and all the courts surrounding it,

  137. was about 35 acres.

  138. That's the size of about 12 football fields.

  139. Imagine going to church

  140. in a space that's the size of 12 football fields.

  141. It's giant.

  142. Some of the stones used in the walls

  143. around the complex,

  144. archaeologists have discovered,

  145. are 42 feet long,

  146. 11 feet high,

  147. and 14 feet deep.

  148. That's like the size

  149. of one of our children's ministry classrooms

  150. next door.

  151. Just like one stone.

  152. The whole thing.

  153. Some of the columns in the portico,

  154. this sort of entryway,

  155. were so thick

  156. that according to the Jewish historian Josephus,

  157. it took three men

  158. with outstretched arms

  159. to reach around one of the columns.

  160. And the sanctuary,

  161. the temple itself,

  162. in the center of all this,

  163. was 165 feet high

  164. and it was covered

  165. in such an array

  166. of gold and silver,

  167. crimson and purple,

  168. that people said

  169. it looked like a snow-clad mountain

  170. radiating the morning sun.

  171. The Roman historian,

  172. Tacitus,

  173. would later call

  174. the Jerusalem temple

  175. immensely opulent.

  176. In fact,

  177. the magnitude of the temple mount

  178. and the stones used to construct it

  179. exceed in size

  180. any other known temple

  181. in the ancient world.

  182. And yet,

  183. Jesus says,

  184. not one stone

  185. will be left upon another.

  186. And what we know

  187. is that in 70 AD,

  188. what Jesus said

  189. would come to pass.

  190. War broke out with the Romans

  191. in about 66 AD

  192. and four years later,

  193. Titus,

  194. the son of the emperor of Aspation,

  195. would finally topple Jerusalem

  196. and burn it

  197. along with the temple

  198. to the ground.

  199. In verses 20 through 24,

  200. Jesus describes

  201. that coming event

  202. of AD 70,

  203. Jerusalem surrounded by armies,

  204. people falling

  205. by the edge of the sword,

  206. being led captive

  207. among all nations.

  208. And today,

  209. you can actually go to Rome

  210. and you can still see

  211. what's called

  212. the Arch of Titus,

  213. a giant monument

  214. erected by the Romans

  215. to recall

  216. the triumphal procession

  217. of Titus

  218. into Rome.

  219. and what's depicted there

  220. are prisoners

  221. captured from the fall

  222. of Jerusalem

  223. being led back

  224. to Rome in chains.

  225. So what are we to learn

  226. from this event

  227. that Jesus spoke of

  228. and that came to pass

  229. just as he said?

  230. Well, the first thing

  231. we learn about

  232. is the reliability

  233. of Jesus.

  234. Of course,

  235. it's been tempting

  236. for some to believe

  237. that the gospel writers

  238. simply put these words

  239. into the mouth of Jesus

  240. after the fact.

  241. But you know,

  242. when we compare

  243. Jesus' words

  244. with the words

  245. of the Old Testament

  246. prophets,

  247. we see that Jesus

  248. was predicting

  249. the downfall

  250. of Jerusalem

  251. in language

  252. very much

  253. like those prophets

  254. of old.

  255. And given the fact

  256. that many scholars

  257. date the gospel

  258. of Mark

  259. before 70 A.D.,

  260. that is before

  261. the fall of Jerusalem,

  262. the picture that we get

  263. is not one of later writers

  264. sort of putting words

  265. into the mouth of Jesus,

  266. but later writers

  267. unpacking the words

  268. that Jesus taught.

  269. Jesus,

  270. knowing how God

  271. had dealt

  272. with his people

  273. in previous times,

  274. knew that the Jerusalem

  275. of his time

  276. was headed

  277. for a similar fate.

  278. And so the words

  279. of Jesus

  280. are reliable.

  281. Look down at verses

  282. 29 through 33.

  283. And Jesus told them

  284. a parable,

  285. look at the fig tree

  286. and all the trees.

  287. Soon as they come out

  288. and leave,

  289. you see for yourselves

  290. and know that the summer

  291. is already near.

  292. So also when you see

  293. these things taking place,

  294. you know that the kingdom

  295. of God is near.

  296. Truly I say to you,

  297. this generation

  298. will not pass away

  299. until all has taken place.

  300. heaven and earth

  301. will pass away,

  302. but my words

  303. will not pass away.

  304. Now,

  305. verse 32

  306. is a tricky verse.

  307. What does Jesus mean

  308. when he says

  309. this generation

  310. will not pass away

  311. until all has taken place?

  312. Well,

  313. I think the best way

  314. to understand it

  315. is that Jesus

  316. is referring here

  317. to the fall of Jerusalem.

  318. And that becomes clear

  319. when you compare Luke 21

  320. to Mark 13.

  321. Mark 13

  322. is Mark's account

  323. of that same speech

  324. of Jesus,

  325. which Luke probably drew upon

  326. in his own research

  327. and writing of his gospel.

  328. And in Mark 13,

  329. if you go back

  330. and read that,

  331. you see that all these things

  332. that will take place

  333. in Jesus' generation

  334. is a reference

  335. to the fall of Jerusalem.

  336. And so Jesus

  337. is telling his disciples

  338. that Jerusalem will fall.

  339. All of that

  340. is going to happen

  341. within their lifetime.

  342. And it does.

  343. But then Jesus

  344. goes on to say,

  345. heaven and earth

  346. will pass away,

  347. but my words

  348. will not pass away.

  349. Now that's

  350. an astounding statement,

  351. is it not?

  352. Sometimes I think

  353. we get so caught up

  354. with verse 32,

  355. we miss what Jesus says

  356. in verse 33.

  357. Heaven and earth

  358. will pass away,

  359. but my words

  360. will not pass away.

  361. Jesus says

  362. his words

  363. are more permanent,

  364. more lasting

  365. than the creation itself.

  366. Now there's only one person

  367. who ought to say

  368. such a thing.

  369. And that person

  370. is God himself.

  371. So do you see

  372. what Jesus is claiming

  373. for himself here?

  374. A claim to be identical

  375. with the one true God of Israel,

  376. the creator and sustainer

  377. of all things.

  378. whose words

  379. will not pass away.

  380. So the fall of Jerusalem

  381. in AD 70

  382. is one more piece

  383. of evidence

  384. that Jesus is

  385. who he says he is

  386. and his words

  387. can be trusted,

  388. they can be relied upon,

  389. even if heaven

  390. and earth pass away.

  391. But the fall of Jerusalem

  392. points us

  393. not just to the reliability

  394. of Jesus,

  395. but also to the reality

  396. of judgment.

  397. Notice in verses 20

  398. through 24

  399. that the fall of Jerusalem

  400. is described

  401. not just as a day

  402. of distress

  403. and desolation,

  404. but also,

  405. Jesus says,

  406. a day of vengeance

  407. to fulfill all that is written

  408. and as a day of wrath.

  409. Those are phrases

  410. that are used

  411. for God's just judgment.

  412. you see,

  413. what God is looking for

  414. from us humans,

  415. from us image bearers,

  416. isn't large stones

  417. and opulent buildings.

  418. What God is looking for

  419. isn't massive,

  420. outward religious show.

  421. If that's what God

  422. is looking for,

  423. then Herod's extravagant

  424. temple project

  425. should be what we all

  426. strive for.

  427. And yet,

  428. when Jesus entered

  429. the temple,

  430. he said it had been

  431. made a den of robbers.

  432. You see,

  433. the prophets of Israel

  434. again and again

  435. warned the people

  436. that it's not outward show

  437. that God desires,

  438. but a contrite

  439. and humble heart.

  440. God looks at the heart.

  441. And the great tragedy

  442. of the first century

  443. is that God's own people

  444. had become heart of heart,

  445. even to the point

  446. of rejecting

  447. their own Messiah

  448. in the person of Jesus.

  449. So the fall of Jerusalem,

  450. this unique event in history

  451. that we've seen fulfilled

  452. when God disciplined

  453. his own people,

  454. this event presses to us

  455. a question as well.

  456. What are you relying on?

  457. Is it the work of your hands?

  458. Vast religious,

  459. spiritual works?

  460. But friends,

  461. our piety can be

  462. as massively opulent

  463. as the Jerusalem temple.

  464. God looks at the heart.

  465. And what God looks for

  466. is humility before his word

  467. and trust in his son.

  468. And this brings us

  469. to the second event

  470. that Jesus describes.

  471. In verses 25 through 28,

  472. Jesus speaks about

  473. the coming of the son of man

  474. in glory.

  475. Now having just described

  476. the terrible judgment

  477. that will fall on Jerusalem

  478. within a generation's time,

  479. Jesus lifts our gaze

  480. to an even greater reckoning

  481. to come further off.

  482. And on that coming day,

  483. Jesus says,

  484. it won't be stones that fall,

  485. but the sun, moon, and stars.

  486. And it won't be

  487. a single city in distress,

  488. but the whole world.

  489. The language here

  490. is what biblical scholars call

  491. apocalyptic language.

  492. That is,

  493. it's heavily figurative language

  494. to describe

  495. the indescribable.

  496. After all,

  497. when the creator

  498. enters creation

  499. to bring his world

  500. to account,

  501. what language

  502. would you use?

  503. When heaven comes

  504. to earth in fullness,

  505. when the glory of God

  506. covers the earth

  507. like the waters

  508. cover the sea,

  509. when every human heart

  510. is laid bare

  511. before the one

  512. who made us,

  513. how shall we describe it?

  514. Words are hard to find.

  515. I think verses 25 and 26

  516. do a pretty good job.

  517. But even though

  518. we have a hard time

  519. putting it in words,

  520. is this not what

  521. our hearts long for?

  522. Deep down,

  523. isn't there something

  524. in our gut

  525. that longs for this?

  526. After all,

  527. the world

  528. is not how it's

  529. supposed to be,

  530. is it?

  531. There's evil

  532. and injustice

  533. and suffering

  534. and death.

  535. And if there is a God,

  536. shouldn't God come

  537. and put it to an end?

  538. Shouldn't God come

  539. and make things right?

  540. And the Bible's answer

  541. to that longing,

  542. that question,

  543. is yes.

  544. the good and holy

  545. creator will not

  546. allow his creation

  547. to suffer

  548. under sin

  549. and evil

  550. and injustice

  551. forever,

  552. but God will come

  553. and will make things

  554. right.

  555. There is hope

  556. for the world.

  557. But at the same time,

  558. doesn't that provoke

  559. another question?

  560. if there is hope

  561. for the world,

  562. if God will come

  563. and put an end

  564. to evil and wrong,

  565. what hope is there

  566. for me?

  567. Because in my heart,

  568. I see evil

  569. and wrong.

  570. I see selfishness

  571. and greed

  572. and lust

  573. and impatience,

  574. all the things

  575. that are wrong

  576. with the world,

  577. I see in myself.

  578. So how could I stand

  579. when God comes?

  580. There might be hope

  581. for the world,

  582. but what hope

  583. is there for me?

  584. What hope

  585. is there for you?

  586. Our only hope

  587. when God comes

  588. to make the world right

  589. is that he will come

  590. in the person

  591. of his son.

  592. Jesus calls himself

  593. the son of man

  594. here.

  595. It's a reference

  596. to Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  597. In Daniel 7,

  598. Daniel describes

  599. the triumph of God

  600. over evil in the world

  601. and the rescue

  602. of his people

  603. and God does that

  604. in and through

  605. one Daniel calls

  606. a son of man,

  607. which Jewish interpreters

  608. for ages

  609. identified as

  610. the coming Messiah,

  611. the one who would

  612. represent God's people

  613. and the one who would

  614. rescue God's people.

  615. When God comes,

  616. he comes in the person

  617. of his son.

  618. Now, the return of Jesus

  619. is a bit hard

  620. to wrap our minds around.

  621. If you're here

  622. and you're exploring

  623. Christianity for the

  624. first time,

  625. that idea probably

  626. seems a little weird.

  627. I get it.

  628. But I want us to see

  629. that the bodily return

  630. of Jesus means this.

  631. The bodily return

  632. of Jesus means

  633. that the one

  634. who took flesh

  635. and who lived

  636. the life

  637. that we should have

  638. lived in perfect

  639. obedience

  640. and the one

  641. who died the death

  642. that we deserve to die

  643. because of our sin.

  644. In other words,

  645. the one who took hold

  646. of us in and through

  647. his incarnation

  648. and death

  649. and resurrection,

  650. that one

  651. has not

  652. let us

  653. go.

  654. He will return

  655. in the same body

  656. in glory

  657. to show us

  658. that his love

  659. for us

  660. is still the same.

  661. He hasn't left

  662. our humanity behind

  663. but he holds it still.

  664. When God comes,

  665. he comes in the person

  666. of his son

  667. and that means

  668. there's hope

  669. not just for the world

  670. but also for sinners

  671. like me

  672. and like you.

  673. You see,

  674. at the end of the day,

  675. when we meet God,

  676. we can meet God

  677. clothed in

  678. our own works

  679. or we can meet God

  680. clothed

  681. in the works

  682. of his son.

  683. And if we choose

  684. to meet God

  685. relying on our own works,

  686. then like the stones

  687. of the temple

  688. long ago,

  689. we will not stand.

  690. But if we choose

  691. to meet God

  692. relying on his son

  693. and depending solely

  694. on him

  695. and not ourselves,

  696. trusting that

  697. his death

  698. paid the price

  699. for my sins

  700. and that his resurrection

  701. means the renewing

  702. of my life,

  703. if we depend solely

  704. on the son,

  705. then that day

  706. will be,

  707. as verse 28 says,

  708. a day of redemption.

  709. That is a day

  710. of liberation,

  711. of freedom,

  712. a day of release

  713. and joy.

  714. So where will you stand?

  715. C.S. Lewis puts it this way

  716. talking about the second coming.

  717. He says,

  718. when the author walks

  719. onto the stage,

  720. the play is over.

  721. God is going to invade,

  722. all right,

  723. but what is the good

  724. of saying you're on

  725. his side then

  726. when you see the whole

  727. natural universe

  728. melting away

  729. like a dream

  730. and something else,

  731. something that never

  732. entered your head

  733. to conceive

  734. comes crashing in.

  735. Something so beautiful

  736. to some of us

  737. and so terrible

  738. to others

  739. that none of us

  740. will have any choice left.

  741. For this time,

  742. it will be God

  743. without disguise.

  744. Something so overwhelming

  745. that it will strike

  746. either irresistible love

  747. or irresistible horror

  748. into every creature.

  749. It will be too late then

  750. to choose your side.

  751. There is no use saying

  752. you choose to lie down

  753. when it has become impossible

  754. to stand up.

  755. That will not be the time

  756. for choosing.

  757. It will be the time

  758. when we discover

  759. which side we really

  760. have chosen,

  761. whether we realized

  762. it before or not.

  763. Now, today,

  764. this moment

  765. is our chance

  766. to choose the right side.

  767. God is holding back

  768. to give us that chance.

  769. It will not last forever.

  770. We must take it

  771. or leave it.

  772. now,

  773. today,

  774. this moment.

  775. All this talk

  776. about the future

  777. is meant to teach us

  778. how to live now.

  779. In great love,

  780. God has provided

  781. a way for us

  782. to experience mercy

  783. in the face

  784. of His just judgment,

  785. mercy in the person

  786. of His Son,

  787. freely offered

  788. to all who believe.

  789. You see,

  790. even the fall

  791. of Jerusalem

  792. wasn't actually the end.

  793. There was still mercy.

  794. There was still time.

  795. Did you notice

  796. the end of verse 24?

  797. Jerusalem will be trampled

  798. underfoot by the Gentiles

  799. until the times

  800. of the Gentiles

  801. are fulfilled.

  802. The times

  803. of the Gentiles.

  804. That's the time

  805. we live in now.

  806. Between the fall

  807. of Jerusalem

  808. and the return

  809. of Christ,

  810. when all nations

  811. are being invited

  812. to enter into

  813. Israel's salvation.

  814. Israel's salvation

  815. which was purchased

  816. through Israel's Messiah,

  817. Jesus,

  818. the forgiveness of sins

  819. and the newness

  820. of eternal life

  821. to enter into

  822. God's covenant favor.

  823. Now is the time

  824. when the nations,

  825. when the Gentiles

  826. are being invited

  827. to come in

  828. to what God

  829. has promised

  830. His people.

  831. You see,

  832. God hasn't given up

  833. on His people.

  834. His promises

  835. stand firm.

  836. The nations

  837. are streaming in

  838. and we can take hold

  839. of those promises

  840. now and have assurance

  841. of God's mercy

  842. when God comes

  843. in glory.

  844. And in light

  845. of that day,

  846. Jesus gives His disciples

  847. an encouragement

  848. and a warning.

  849. As we live now,

  850. in light of His coming again,

  851. Jesus wants to encourage us

  852. and He wants to give us

  853. a warning.

  854. The encouragement

  855. is found in verses

  856. 8 through 19.

  857. And that encouragement

  858. is,

  859. don't be afraid.

  860. When many people

  861. come in my name,

  862. Jesus says in verse 8,

  863. saying that the end

  864. is at hand,

  865. don't be afraid.

  866. And don't run after them.

  867. Predictions about

  868. the end times

  869. are foolishness,

  870. Jesus says.

  871. In Mark 13,

  872. He says,

  873. listen,

  874. only the Father

  875. knows when I'm coming back,

  876. not even me.

  877. If Jesus doesn't know

  878. when the Father

  879. is going to send Him

  880. to come back,

  881. trust me,

  882. nobody else knows.

  883. That's how this works.

  884. So don't be afraid.

  885. Don't chase after.

  886. Don't freak out.

  887. When you hear about

  888. wars and tumults,

  889. political turmoil,

  890. natural disasters,

  891. even cosmological oddities,

  892. which is what are described

  893. in verses 9 through 11,

  894. Jesus says,

  895. don't be afraid.

  896. These things are going

  897. to happen between

  898. His first and second coming.

  899. Don't lose your mind.

  900. They're not a sign

  901. that the world is ending

  902. all at once.

  903. Don't be afraid.

  904. Then in verses 12 through 15,

  905. Jesus says that there will be

  906. persecution that comes.

  907. That as His followers,

  908. we will be at times

  909. handed over

  910. both to religious

  911. and political authorities

  912. for Jesus' sake.

  913. Jesus doesn't promise

  914. His disciples

  915. an easy road of discipleship.

  916. And in the book of Acts,

  917. we see that this was true

  918. from the very beginning

  919. of the church

  920. being brought before

  921. religious and political

  922. authorities.

  923. In Acts,

  924. we see Peter and John

  925. and Stephen

  926. before the Sanhedrin.

  927. We see James

  928. before Herod Agrippa I.

  929. We see Paul

  930. before Galio and Felix

  931. and Agrippa and Festus.

  932. And this is true

  933. not just in the generation

  934. before the fall of Jerusalem,

  935. but in every generation since.

  936. And yet here too,

  937. Jesus encourages us,

  938. don't be afraid.

  939. Don't anxiously meditate

  940. on how you'll respond

  941. if you find yourself

  942. put on trial.

  943. No, Jesus says,

  944. in that moment,

  945. I will give you words

  946. and wisdom.

  947. I'll give you a mouth

  948. and a mind.

  949. What a wonderful promise

  950. that Jesus Himself

  951. will be near to us

  952. when we face persecution

  953. or trial or questioning.

  954. Now this isn't an excuse

  955. to be totally unprepared.

  956. Peter will write

  957. in his first letter,

  958. in your hearts,

  959. honor Christ,

  960. the Lord is holy,

  961. always being prepared

  962. to make a defense

  963. to anyone who asks you

  964. for a reason

  965. for the hope that is in you.

  966. So it's a good thing

  967. to think about

  968. every once in a while

  969. how you might articulate

  970. the hope that we have

  971. in Christ.

  972. But what Jesus is saying here

  973. is that in the moment

  974. of our defense,

  975. when your co-worker

  976. puts you on the spot,

  977. when your neighbor

  978. asks a question,

  979. when your roommate

  980. cracks a joke

  981. about your faith,

  982. or something more serious

  983. happens,

  984. in that moment,

  985. don't be afraid

  986. because Jesus is with you

  987. through the presence

  988. and power

  989. of the Holy Spirit.

  990. In fact,

  991. Jesus says in verse 13

  992. that this is your opportunity,

  993. your opportunity

  994. to bear witness,

  995. your opportunity

  996. to bear witness

  997. to the gospel.

  998. What is the gospel?

  999. The good news

1000. that there is a God

  1001. who made us

  1002. and who loves us

  1003. and who is holy,

  1004. just, and good.

1005. But that rather than loving

  1006. and worshiping God,

  1007. we've put ourselves

  1008. in the center

  1009. and have done things

  1010. our own way

  1011. and we've made a mess

  1012. of the world

1013. and we deserve God's judgment.

  1014. But God,

  1015. in great mercy,

  1016. sent his Son

  1017. in the flesh

1018. to live and to die

  1019. in our place

1020. so that we might be

  1021. reconciled to him.

  1022. God poured out

  1023. his immense love

  1024. for his Son

  1025. for all who believe

  1026. and now everyone

  1027. who calls upon

1028. the name of the Lord Jesus

  1029. will be saved,

  1030. our sins forgiven,

  1031. our relationship

  1032. with God restored,

  1033. our lives empowered

  1034. through the Holy Spirit

  1035. for service and purpose

  1036. and mission and love.

  1037. Don't be afraid.

  1038. This is your opportunity.

  1039. In verses 16 through 18,

  1040. Jesus says,

  1041. concluding his encouragement,

1042. he says that not just

  1043. will there be trial

  1044. and persecution

  1045. with authorities,

1046. but even closer to home,

  1047. he says,

  1048. there'll be betrayal

  1049. and hatred

1050. and even for some of you,

  1051. death.

  1052. And yet,

  1053. even in that most

  1054. painful situation,

1055. we need not be afraid.

1056. Not a hair of your head

  1057. will perish.

  1058. You see,

  1059. the one who knows

  1060. what it's like

  1061. to be betrayed

  1062. by a friend

1063. and the one who knows

  1064. what it's like

  1065. to be hated

  1066. by his own people

  1067. and the one

1068. who was put to death,

  1069. Jesus,

  1070. promises us

  1071. that because

  1072. he was betrayed

  1073. and because

  1074. he was hated,

  1075. and because

1076. he was put to death.

  1077. Now,

  1078. none of those things

  1079. can destroy us.

  1080. Betrayal cannot

  1081. separate us

1082. from the love of God,

  1083. can it?

  1084. Hatred cannot

  1085. separate us

1086. from the love of God.

  1087. Not even death

  1088. can separate us

1089. from the love of God

  1090. in Christ Jesus,

  1091. our Lord.

  1092. So hold on

  1093. and don't be afraid.

  1094. What awaits you

  1095. as you endure,

  1096. Jesus says

  1097. in verse 19,

  1098. is life.

  1099. Eternal,

  1100. abundant

  1101. life.

  1102. That is your end,

  1103. brother and sister.

  1104. Life.

  1105. So don't be afraid.

  1106. There's the encouragement.

  1107. But Jesus also

  1108. gives us a warning.

  1109. He ends in verses

  1110. 34 through 36,

  1111. warning us

  1112. to stay awake.

  1113. Watch yourselves.

  1114. You see,

  1115. if there's a danger

  1116. that we will face

  1117. many fears,

  1118. there's the equal danger

1119. that we will give in

  1120. to many distractions.

  1121. Watch yourselves,

  1122. Jesus says

  1123. in verse 34,

  1124. lest your hearts

  1125. be weighed down

  1126. with dissipation

  1127. and drunkenness

  1128. in the cares

  1129. of this life.

  1130. There are two kinds

  1131. of distractions

  1132. that Jesus points to.

  1133. Two distractions

  1134. that can weigh down

  1135. our hearts

  1136. and cause us

  1137. to be unprepared

  1138. for the king's return.

  1139. The first is

  1140. dissipation

  1141. and drunkenness.

  1142. Simply losing

  1143. ourselves

  1144. in the temporary

  1145. pleasures of the world.

  1146. Even abusing

  1147. the pleasures

  1148. of this world.

  1149. Taking good things

  1150. like sex and drink

  1151. and giving ourselves

  1152. over to them.

  1153. Wake up,

  1154. Jesus says.

  1155. Don't let the

  1156. temporary pleasures

  1157. of this life

  1158. capture your heart

  1159. and make you

  1160. unprepared

  1161. for what's to come.

  1162. After all,

  1163. what's to come

  1164. is more thrilling,

  1165. more enlivening,

  1166. more joy-giving

  1167. than any pleasure

  1168. this world holds.

  1169. The pleasures

  1170. of this life

  1171. are simply echoes,

  1172. simply signposts

  1173. to the joy

  1174. that awaits us

  1175. when God comes again

  1176. to make things right.

  1177. So stay awake.

  1178. But there's a less

  1179. obvious distraction.

  1180. There's sort of

  1181. a respectable distraction.

  1182. And that's what

  1183. Jesus calls

1184. the cares of this life.

  1185. That is the everyday

  1186. responsibilities

  1187. like work

  1188. and family

  1189. and marriage

  1190. and running errands

  1191. and paying bills

  1192. and finishing reports.

1193. We can get so caught up

  1194. in the flow

  1195. of responsibilities

  1196. that we forget

  1197. the larger story

  1198. that we're a part of.

  1199. your life is more

  1200. than the abundance

  1201. of your possessions,

  1202. Jesus once said.

  1203. Your life is more

  1204. than the sum

  1205. of daily activities.

  1206. Don't let

  1207. the grind of life

  1208. distract you

  1209. from the fact

  1210. that you are

  1211. a player

  1212. in the great drama

  1213. of God's redemption.

  1214. Stay awake.

  1215. the diapers

  1216. you change,

  1217. the projects

  1218. you manage,

  1219. the hours

  1220. you clock in

  1221. from nine to five,

  1222. these things,

1223. if you are in Christ,

  1224. don't define you.

  1225. Don't let them

  1226. weigh you down

  1227. and distract you.

  1228. Stay awake.

  1229. You're a child

  1230. of the King

  1231. and the King

  1232. is coming

  1233. to make this world

  1234. His home again

  1235. and you will reign

  1236. with Him forever.

  1237. Don't let that day

  1238. come upon you

  1239. like a trap,

  1240. Jesus says.

1241. But how do we do that?

1242. How do we stay awake

  1243. amidst distractions

  1244. that weigh us down?

1245. Did you see the answer

  1246. in verse 36?

  1247. Prayer.

1248. Now you might be thinking,

  1249. I usually fall asleep

  1250. when I pray.

1251. How is that the answer

  1252. to stay awake?

  1253. What a small view

  1254. of prayer we have

1255. as a people of God.

  1256. Prayer is the gift

  1257. God gives us

  1258. to recenter

  1259. our hearts

  1260. and lives on Him

1261. and on what really matters

1262. and on who we really are

1263. and on where this story

  1264. is really going.

  1265. Prayer is the future

  1266. come crashing

  1267. into the present

  1268. because prayer

  1269. is communion with God

  1270. in Christ

  1271. by the Holy Spirit.

  1272. That's where you're headed,

  1273. church.

  1274. communion with God

  1275. in Christ

  1276. by the Holy Spirit

1277. and when you are in prayer

  1278. it comes crashing

  1279. into the now.

  1280. Prayer is pouring out

  1281. our hearts to God.

  1282. Prayer is asking God

  1283. for all we need.

  1284. Prayer is resting silently

1285. in the presence of God.

  1286. Prayer is wrestling

  1287. with God through trial.

  1288. Prayer is staying awake

1289. so that we might stand

1290. before the Son of Man.

  1291. and then that day

  1292. won't come upon us

  1293. like a trap.

1294. But as verse 29 says,

1295. it will come upon us

  1296. like the turning

  1297. of the seasons,

  1298. the welcome

  1299. bursting forth

  1300. of summer

  1301. when the cold

  1302. of sin and death

  1303. are put away

  1304. and creation

  1305. is released

  1306. from its bondage

  1307. to decay

1308. and God is all in all.

1309. May we meet that day

  1310. like the dawning

  1311. of the summer.

  1312. Brothers and sisters,

  1313. stay awake

  1314. and don't be afraid.

  1315. Live now

1316. in light of God's future

  1317. because the kingdom

  1318. is near

  1319. and the King

  1320. is coming.

  1321. Let's pray.

  1322. Lord Jesus,

  1323. thank you

  1324. for telling us

  1325. the truth

  1326. about where

  1327. history is headed.

  1328. Thank you

  1329. for telling us

  1330. about your own return.

  1331. God,

  1332. some of us here

  1333. may not feel like

  1334. we're ready

  1335. for that day.

1336. I pray that even now

  1337. in the quiet

  1338. of these few moments

  1339. we would not

  1340. let distractions

  1341. point us away

  1342. from the ultimate truth

  1343. of where we stand

  1344. with you.

  1345. God,

  1346. and if we are

  1347. standing

  1348. in our own efforts

  1349. in our own works

  1350. even in our own

  1351. helplessness,

  1352. God,

  1353. I pray

  1354. that today

  1355. would be the day

  1356. when we move

  1357. our hearts

  1358. from relying

  1359. on ourselves

  1360. to relying

  1361. on Jesus

  1362. our loving

  1363. Savior

  1364. who says

  1365. come to me

  1366. all you

  1367. who are weary

  1368. and heavy laden

  1369. and I will give

  1370. you rest.

  1371. Jesus,

  1372. you're the good shepherd

  1373. and no one

  1374. can pluck us

  1375. out of your hand.

  1376. So would our hearts

  1377. be renewed

  1378. in faith

  1379. this morning

  1380. by your Spirit

  1381. to not be afraid

1382. and to not fall asleep.

  1383. Keep us awake

  1384. to the mission

  1385. that you have

  1386. for us,

  1387. God.

  1388. Keep us alert

  1389. to the movements

  1390. of your Spirit

  1391. throughout this week.

  1392. Keep us attentive

  1393. to the way

  1394. in which you are

  1395. calling us

  1396. to be your ambassadors

  1397. and your people

  1398. in the world

  1399. to be salt

  1400. and light.

  1401. O God,

  1402. send us out

  1403. with a fresh filling

  1404. of your Spirit

  1405. we pray

  1406. in Jesus' name.

  1407. Amen.

  1408. Well, friends,

  1409. let's stand

  1410. and let's pray.

  1411. Let's pray.

  1412. Let's pray.

  1413. Let's pray.
