  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. We're picking back up in our sermon series with the Gospel of Luke today.

  3. So would you turn with me to Luke chapter 22, verses 39 through 53.

    Luke 22:39–53

  4. If you're looking for a good Bible app on your phone, ESV has a good one.

  5. There are lots of others, I'm sure, but I'll be reading from the ESV this morning.

  6. As we come to our passage in Luke 22, verses 39 through 53, let me pray for us.

    Luke 22:39–53

  7. Our Father, hallowed be your name.

  8. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  9. Father, these are the words that your Son taught us to pray,

  10. and what good and bolstering and strengthening words they are.

  11. So, Lord, we pray for this moment as we come to your word,

  12. as we gather around your scriptures together,

  13. that your kingdom would come,

  14. and our eyes would be opened,

  15. and our hearts would come alive again to behold you in your word.

  16. Give us fresh insight and fresh vision into who you are, Lord Jesus,

  17. that our hearts may be encouraged and strengthened in faith and hope and love in these days.

  18. We ask this, Father, in the name of Jesus, our great high priest,

  19. and in the power of your Holy Spirit.

  20. Amen.

  21. Well, let me read Luke 22, 39 through 53 for us.

  22. And he, that is Jesus, came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives.

  23. And the disciples followed him.

  24. And when he came to the place, he said to them,

  25. Pray that you may not enter into temptation.

  26. And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw and knelt down and prayed, saying,

  27. Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me.

  28. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.

  29. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.

  30. And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly,

  31. and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground.

  32. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow.

  33. And he said to them,

  34. Why are you sleeping?

  35. Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.

  36. While he was still speaking, there came a crowd.

  37. And the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them.

  38. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him.

  39. But Jesus said to him,

  40. Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?

  41. And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said,

  42. Lord, shall we strike with the sword?

  43. And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

  44. But Jesus said, no more of this.

  45. And he touched his ear and healed him.

  46. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come out against him,

  47. have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs?

  48. When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me.

  49. But this is your hour and the power of darkness.

  50. Well, the disciples were about to face the biggest test of their lives.

  51. Their friend, their teacher, the one they hoped would be king,

  52. Jesus was about to be arrested and put to death.

  53. And this moment on the Mount of Olives in a place that Matthew and Mark call Gethsemane

  54. and that John calls a garden, this would be perhaps the greatest test of the disciples' lives.

  55. Would they stand by their friend, their teacher, or would they fall away?

  56. And at a deeper level, when the story they thought they were living in was dramatically rewritten according to God's plan,

  57. what would they do?

  58. You see, the disciples had what we might call a life story in mind.

  59. It went something like this.

  60. The Messiah was here and he would triumph and we would share in his glory.

  61. But that was not exactly the story God had in mind.

  62. God's story, which Jesus had just been telling them moments before at their Passover meal in the upper room at the beginning of Luke 22,

  63. God's story involved something much deeper and more costly.

  64. You see, the way to glory would not be through triumph, but through suffering.

  65. So how would they fare in the face of this test when the deep story of their lives was being rewritten?

  66. I think many of us these days can feel like those disciples facing a great test, a great trial.

  67. As the effects of the pandemic continue to grow in the weeks ahead, that trial is likely going to increase.

  68. None of us thought that the story God had for us would include the worldwide spread of a virus,

  69. the loss of work and economic security, and perhaps, before it's all said and done,

  70. maybe each of us losing someone we know, maybe even someone we love.

  71. Luke takes us with the disciples to the Mount of Olives in this moment of trial.

  72. And what do we see there that might help us in our moment of trial?

  73. Well, there we see Jesus.

  74. Jesus facing a trial greater than any of us can imagine.

  75. Consider first Jesus and his agony in prayer.

  76. Jesus' agony in prayer.

  77. Luke tells us in verse 44,

  78. being in agony, Jesus prayed more earnestly,

  79. and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground.

  80. Now, only Luke gives us this last detail about Jesus' sweat falling like blood,

  81. and perhaps what Luke is describing here is an actual instance of a very rare medical condition

  82. where under extreme distress the blood vessels of the skin break open.

  83. Or perhaps Luke is speaking figuratively that the sweat is like great drops of blood

  84. because of its intensity.

  85. But either way, as the first part of the verse says,

  86. the point Luke wants us to see is that Jesus is in true agony.

  87. In his fully human nature, Christ undergoes in this moment great striving,

  88. great suffering, great agony.

  89. But why?

  90. You know, Luke, more than any other gospel writer,

  91. has shown us that Jesus was constantly at prayer.

  92. At key moments of Jesus' life especially,

  93. Jesus is seen in the gospel of Luke praying.

  94. Like before his baptism, or before choosing the twelve,

  95. or prior to asking the disciples for a confession of faith.

  96. Even prior to the transfiguration.

  97. But none of those prior moments of prayer were quite like this one

  98. on the Mount of Olives in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  99. Here, Luke tells us there's agony.

  100. Why?

  101. Well, verse 42 shows us,

  102. In this moment of prayer,

  103. Jesus was beholding, he was seeing,

  104. he was viewing, like never before,

  105. the cup he was about to drink.

  106. Look at that verse again.

  107. Father, if you are willing,

  108. remove this cup from me.

  109. This metaphorical cup brought so much terror

  110. to the human heart of Jesus

  111. that in his human will,

  112. he wrestled with the Father,

  113. asking if there might be some other way

  114. to do what he had come to do.

  115. Now, at this moment,

  116. we step into

  117. one of the deep mysteries

  118. of the incarnation.

  119. Jesus Christ, we see as the Gospels unfold,

  120. is both God and man.

  121. He's one person with two natures,

  122. a divine nature and a human nature.

  123. And this means that Jesus has both

  124. a divine will and a human will.

  125. One writer put it this way.

  126. He said,

  127. With respect to Jesus' divine nature,

  128. being fully God,

  129. he had no other will than that of the Father.

  130. Yet with respect to his human nature,

  131. being fully human,

  132. Jesus himself

  133. made a clear and careful distinction

  134. between his will

  135. and the Father's will.

  136. If he did the Father's will,

  137. the writer goes on to say,

  138. this was because he chose to do it,

  139. not necessarily because it always came easily

  140. or automatically.

  141. Jesus, with his fully human will,

  142. is here wrestling

  143. with the choice before him

  144. to take the cup.

  145. What then is this cup

  146. that filled Jesus and his human will

  147. with such agony?

  148. Well, it's clear from the context of Luke

  149. that the cup that Jesus speaks of

  150. is the cross.

  151. On the way to Jerusalem,

  152. he told his disciples,

  153. more than once,

  154. that he would be betrayed

  155. and handed over to be crucified.

  156. And in the upper room,

  157. he had just taken,

  158. maybe even a half an hour

  159. before this scene,

  160. he had just taken the bread and the cup,

  161. symbols of that first Passover in Exodus.

  162. And Jesus said to his disciples,

  163. this bread that we use

  164. to celebrate the Passover,

  165. it's really about my body

  166. being broken for you.

  167. And this cup that we use

  168. to celebrate the Passover

  169. is really about my bloodshed for you,

  170. Jesus had just told them.

  171. But why did the cross

  172. fill Jesus with such dread,

  173. such agony?

  174. Think with me of other great figures

  175. who've faced an untimely death.

  176. Socrates famously faced death

  177. with great composure.

  178. Thousands of martyrs,

  179. Christian and non-Christian alike,

  180. have faced the prospect

  181. of even gruesome deaths

  182. with cool minds

  183. and calm hearts.

  184. But here we see Jesus

  185. contemplating his death

  186. and he is in horror.

  187. What explains that difference?

  188. Well, it's because the death

  189. that Jesus was about to undergo

  190. was like no other death

  191. before or after.

  192. You see, when Jesus speaks

  193. of the cup,

  194. we have to hear that metaphor

  195. within the thought world

  196. of first century Judaism.

  197. We have to hear it, that is,

  198. as the Old Testament uses it.

  199. And again and again,

  200. this is what we hear.

  201. Take Isaiah,

  202. the prophet Isaiah,

    Isaiah 51:17

  203. chapter 51, verse 17.

  204. Isaiah says,

  205. Wake yourself, wake yourself,

  206. stand up, O Jerusalem,

  207. you who have drunk

  208. from the hand of the Lord

  209. the cup of his wrath,

  210. who have drunk to the dregs

  211. the bowl,

  212. the cup of staggering.

  213. Or listen to Jeremiah 25, 15.

  214. Thus says the Lord,

  215. the God of Israel,

  216. take from my hand

  217. the cup of the wine of wrath

  218. and make all the nations

  219. to whom I send you drink it.

  220. Again, Jeremiah 49, 12.

  221. For thus says the Lord,

  222. if those who did not deserve

  223. to drink the cup must drink it,

  224. will you go unpunished?

  225. You shall not go unpunished,

  226. but you must drink.

  227. One more example from Habakkuk 2, 6.

  228. You will have your fill of shame

  229. instead of glory.

  230. Drink yourself

  231. and show your sinfulness.

  232. The cup in the Lord's right hand

  233. will come around to you

  234. and utter shame

  235. will come upon your glory.

  236. So what is it the prophets are saying?

  237. How are they using this metaphor

  238. of the cup?

  239. Well, the cup is clearly a metaphor

  240. for God's judgment

  241. and wrath against human sin.

  242. What brings agony and terror

  243. to the human heart of Jesus

  244. is not merely the immense physical pain

  245. that lies ahead,

  246. but the thought of undergoing

  247. the full and fierce wrath of God.

  248. On the cross,

  249. Jesus would bear the full weight

  250. of God's right and good anger

  251. at all the evil, injustice,

  252. and sin of the world.

  253. It's like a great tarp.

  254. Imagine a great tarp

  255. holding back the rain

  256. for generations and generations,

  257. and it's bowing under the weight,

  258. and at the cross,

  259. that tarp would tear,

  260. and the flood would come pouring down.

  261. And in the garden,

  262. Jesus is given a full view

  263. of what was to come.

  264. He sees the cup

  265. that he must drink,

  266. and in agony he prays,

  267. Father, if you are willing,

  268. remove this cup from me.

  269. But note the next line

  270. of Jesus' prayer.

  271. Nevertheless,

  272. not my will,

  273. but yours be done.

  274. Do you see what's happening

  275. in this moment

  276. in the Garden of Gethsemane?

  277. The human will of Jesus

  278. reckoning fully

  279. with what it will cost him

  280. to obey his Father's will

  281. and go to the cross

  282. for our salvation.

  283. Jesus,

  284. in full knowledge

  285. of what's ahead,

  286. even to the point

  287. of sweating blood,

  288. chooses the Father's will.

  289. And then his agony

  290. in prayer

  291. in verses 39 through 46

  292. becomes his willingness

  293. to face betrayal

  294. in verses 47 through 53.

  295. This is the second paragraph

  296. of our text.

  297. We see Jesus in agony

  298. in prayer,

  299. and then we see him

  300. willingly,

  301. in willingness,

  302. going out to face

  303. his betrayal

  304. in the next paragraph.

  305. This is the second thing

  306. Luke wants us to see

  307. in this episode.

  308. Having seen the cup

  309. in prayer,

  310. Jesus now takes the cup.

  311. He meets his betrayer,

  312. Judas,

  313. and in compassion

  314. he says to Judas,

  315. would you betray me

  316. with a kiss, Judas?

  317. And when his disciples

  318. rouse from their sleep

  319. and start slashing

  320. with their swords,

  321. he says,

  322. no more of this

  323. and heals

  324. the servant

  325. of the high priest.

  326. And when the crowd

  327. closes in to arrest him,

  328. he confronts them

  329. with the reality

  330. of their dark deed.

  331. This is your hour,

  332. he says,

  333. but it's the power

  334. of darkness.

  335. And so the passion

  336. of Jesus begins.

  337. It begins in the pain

  338. of betrayal

  339. and in the shame

  340. of arrest.

  341. Now friends,

  342. what are we to make

  343. of this?

  344. What are we to make

  345. of Christ's agony

  346. in prayer

  347. and his willingness

  348. to face betrayal

  349. and the way

  350. these two things

  351. are intimately locked

  352. in the passion story?

  353. What are we to make

  354. of the fact

  355. that Jesus sees the cup

  356. in all of its horror

  357. and then willingly

  358. steps forth

  359. to take it?

  360. Well,

  361. what we are meant

  362. to see here

  363. at the very least

  364. is the wonderful

  365. strength

  366. of the love

  367. of Christ

  368. for sinners.

  369. Paul writes

  370. in Romans 5,

  371. now most people,

  372. Paul says,

  373. would not be willing

  374. to die

  375. even for an upright person,

  376. though someone

  377. might perhaps

  378. be willing to die

  379. for a person

  380. who's especially

  381. good,

  382. but God showed

  383. his great love

  384. for us in this,

  385. that while we were

  386. still sinners,

  387. Christ died for us.

  388. Do you see

  389. the love of Christ

  390. for you

  391. in the Garden

  392. of Gethsemane?

  393. As Christ kneels

  394. in agony,

  395. sweat falling

  396. to the ground,

  397. do you see Christ

  398. choosing that cup

  399. for you?

  400. The Father

  401. sent his Son,

  402. do you see the Son

  403. choosing the Father's

  404. will for you?

  405. Do you see the Son

  406. exercising in time

  407. this eternal plan

  408. of redemption

  409. when God set his heart

  410. on you

  411. in love,

  412. choosing you,

  413. and then agreeing

  414. to pay the full cost

  415. for your sin,

  416. to bear the exclusion

  417. and the death

  418. and the wrath

  419. that you're in my sins

  420. rightfully deserved?

  421. Do you see that Jesus

  422. faced the biggest trial

  423. of his life

  424. in this moment,

  425. there,

  426. bowing before the Father,

  427. his betrayer

  428. already at hand

  429. making his way

  430. right at this moment.

  431. Don't you see Jesus,

  432. Jesus,

  433. the rightful King

  434. of Heaven,

  435. could have called down

  436. armies of angels

  437. to defend him,

  438. to judge his enemies,

  439. and he could have

  440. walked away

  441. from the cup

  442. and all its horror

  443. in complete freedom

  444. and justice.

  445. But instead,

  446. our King

  447. chooses

  448. the will of his Father.

  449. He chooses

  450. instead to receive

  451. heavenly,

  452. angelic help

  453. not to destroy

  454. his enemies

  455. but to aid his prayer

  456. as he chooses

  457. willingly to die

  458. for them.

  459. You note how Luke

  460. says the angels

  461. are present in this scene.

  462. They're there

  463. supporting Jesus

  464. in his prayer

  465. as he takes the cup.

  466. The greatest trial

  467. of Jesus' life

  468. and for you

  469. and for me,

  470. he takes the cup.

  471. He takes the cup

  472. out of your hands.

  473. He takes the cup

  474. of judgment

  475. that your sins deserve

  476. and in exchange

  477. he hands us

  478. the cup

  479. of salvation

  480. purchased in full

  481. at the cross.

  482. And if you've seen,

  483. if you and I

  484. have seen

  485. and received

  486. the love

  487. of Christ

  488. for us

  489. as sinners,

  490. then here's

  491. what's true.

  492. If we've seen

  493. and received

  494. what Christ

  495. has done

  496. for us,

  497. here's what's true.

  498. that no cup

  499. you are asked

  500. to drink

  501. in this life

  502. can destroy you.

  503. Because Jesus

  504. drank the cup

  505. of God's wrath

  506. for me,

  507. any cup

  508. that my heavenly

  509. father places

  510. before me

  511. must ultimately

  512. be for my

  513. good.

  514. You know,

  515. the cup of our life,

  516. think about your life

  517. as a cup

  518. that you have to drink.

  519. What is it?

  520. It's mixed

  521. with many joys

  522. and it is mixed

  523. with many sorrows.

  524. But because of

  525. what Jesus has done,

  526. that cup

  527. in Christ

  528. is the cup

  529. of our salvation.

  530. Because there

  531. is now

  532. no condemnation

  533. for those

  534. who are in

  535. Christ Jesus.

  536. The cup

  537. of condemnation

  538. has been drunk

  539. to the dregs

  540. down to the very bottom

  541. and all that's left

  542. for you and me

  543. is the cup

  544. of God's salvation.

  545. You know,

  546. our cup

  547. might be mixed

  548. with a lot of sorrow.

  549. Jesus

  550. faced

  551. betrayal.

  552. And so

  553. at times

  554. may we.

  555. Jesus

  556. had friends

  557. who misunderstood

  558. him

  559. and in his

  560. moment of most need

  561. they put him

  562. in greater danger.

  563. Two guys

  564. with swords

  565. was not going

  566. to stop

  567. this whole band

  568. coming into the garden.

  569. The only thing

  570. it was going to do

  571. was make Jesus

  572. look even more guilty.

  573. Here were his friends

  574. misunderstanding him,

  575. putting him

  576. in even greater danger.

  577. Friends,

  578. there may be times

  579. when we have friends

  580. who deeply

  581. misunderstand us.

  582. Jesus

  583. faced betrayal,

  584. so may we.

  585. Jesus

  586. had friends

  587. misunderstand him,

  588. so may we.

  589. Jesus

  590. faced

  591. an untimely

  592. death

  593. in the prime

  594. of his life.

  595. And the reality

  596. is,

  597. friends,

  598. so may

  599. we.

  600. Who knows

  601. what trials

  602. the coming weeks

  603. or the coming months

  604. may bring.

  605. But knowing

  606. what Jesus

  607. has done for us,

  608. knowing the love

  609. of God

  610. for us,

  611. we too

  612. can pray.

  613. Father,

  614. if possible,

  615. let this cup

  616. pass.

  617. Nevertheless,

  618. thy will

  619. be done.

  620. Because the

  621. Father's cup

  622. for us,

  623. because of what

  624. Christ has done

  625. is the cup

  626. of his salvation.

  627. And is this not

  628. what the disciples,

  629. what Jesus tells

  630. to his disciples here?

  631. What is his word

  632. to them as they

  633. enter into the

  634. Mount of Olives,

  635. into the garden?

  636. Pray.

  637. So let us

  638. end this morning

  639. where our passage

  640. begins.

  641. Jesus tells us,

  642. pray that you

  643. may not

  644. enter into

  645. temptation.

  646. Temptation,

  647. that word can mean

  648. test or trial

  649. as well.

  650. And what does it

  651. mean to enter

  652. into temptation?

  653. Well,

  654. it means to give

  655. in.

  656. It means to fall

  657. prey to it.

  658. So how do we

  659. not fall prey

  660. to temptation?

  661. How do we not

  662. give in

  663. when trial comes?

  664. How do we not

  665. give in to despair?

  666. How do we not

  667. give in to anger

  668. and bitterness?

  669. How do we not

  670. give in to unbelief?

  671. Jesus says,

  672. pray.

  673. You know,

  674. one of the things

  675. I've observed

  676. in the last week

  677. is that as many

  678. of us have been

  679. forced to work

  680. from home

  681. and distance

  682. ourselves from

  683. one another,

  684. is that all

  685. that frantic energy

  686. that we usually

  687. spend in the world

  688. out there

  689. is now just

  690. being channeled

  691. into our lives

  692. at home.

  693. Facebook posts

  694. are going crazy

  695. with like 400 ways

  696. to homeschool

  697. your kids.

  698. There are now

  699. 700 new home

  700. projects you can

  701. do and get done

  702. with all that

  703. time you have

  704. on your hands

  705. now that you're

  706. working from home.

  707. You know,

  708. we're just taking

  709. all that energy

  710. and just redirecting

  711. it and plowing it

  712. into our home lives.

  713. You know,

  714. but perhaps

  715. one of the things

  716. that we're meant

  717. to learn

  718. in this season

  719. isn't how

  720. to redirect

  721. all of our

  722. frantic energy

  723. into other things.

  724. Maybe we're

  725. meant to learn

  726. simply

  727. how to wait.

  728. To wait

  729. on God

  730. as the psalmists

  731. tell us

  732. over and over

  733. again

  734. and to pray.

  735. Of course,

  736. we shouldn't be

  737. against finding

  738. creative ways

  739. to connect

  740. and care

  741. for one another.

  742. You know,

  743. we should be

  744. very happy

  745. to find new

  746. and meaningful

  747. things to do

  748. with our time

  749. now that our

  750. lives are changing.

  751. But,

  752. this is a season

  753. when we should

  754. also be learning

  755. to slow down,

  756. to wait,

  757. and to pray.

  758. To pray

  759. as Jesus invites

  760. us here,

  761. to pray,

  762. Father.

  763. Jesus invites

  764. us to pray,

  765. Father.

  766. You know,

  767. this is a moment

  768. when all of us

  769. should be looking

  770. to God again.

  771. To acknowledge

  772. our complete

  773. dependence

  774. on God again

  775. and to rediscover

  776. that because of

  777. Jesus'

  778. finished work,

  779. we too

  780. can call God

  781. Abba,

  782. Father.

  783. So,

  784. could we

  785. slow down

  786. and pray

  787. in this season

  788. and remember

  789. who God

  790. truly is

  791. for us

  792. in Jesus?

  793. Jesus.

  794. Now,

  795. I understand

  796. some of us

  797. have had

  798. very absent

  799. fathers.

  800. Some of us

  801. have had

  802. maybe even

  803. pretty terrible

  804. fathers.

  805. But,

  806. that's not

  807. who God

  808. is.

  809. To know God

  810. as Father

  811. is to know

  812. God as

  813. intimate

  814. and trustworthy,

  815. as strong

  816. and gentle,

  817. as holy

  818. and good.

  819. when we pray,

  820. Father,

  821. we celebrate

  822. the fact

  823. that because

  824. Jesus has

  825. taken away

  826. our sin,

  827. we are now

  828. beloved daughters

  829. and sons of God

  830. no matter what

  831. circumstances may

  832. bring.

  833. And then

  834. Jesus invites

  835. us to pray,

  836. Father,

  837. if you're

  838. willing,

  839. remove this

  840. cup from me.

  841. Now,

  842. we saw

  843. that for Jesus

  844. the cup

  845. was a very

  846. specific

  847. thing,

  848. a very

  849. specific

  850. and unique

  851. part of

  852. his mission.

  853. He was the

  854. only one

  855. who could

  856. take up

  857. the cup

  858. of God's

  859. wrath

  860. and drain

  861. it for us

  862. because only

  863. he was

  864. fully God

  865. and fully

  866. human

  867. to do

  868. that work

  869. for us.

  870. But,

  871. by analogy,

  872. we now

  873. take up

  874. that prayer

  875. for whatever

  876. cup

  877. lays before

  878. us.

  879. And we

  880. can pray,

  881. Father,

  882. if you're

  883. willing,

  884. remove

  885. this cup

  886. of sorrow

  887. from me.

  888. You see,

  889. it's not

  890. wrong to

  891. pray for

  892. different

  893. circumstances.

  894. We can

  895. cast all

  896. our cares

  897. on God

  898. because he

  899. cares for

  900. us.

  901. We should

  902. be honest

  903. with God

  904. in our

  905. desires,

  906. our fears,

  907. our concerns.

  908. And so,

  909. we pray

  910. like we did

  911. earlier in the

  912. service.

  913. We pray

  914. for God

  915. to end

  916. the spread

  917. of the

  918. virus.

  919. we pray

  920. for God

  921. to protect

  922. the most

  923. vulnerable,

  924. especially

  925. from not

  926. just the

  927. disease,

  928. but from

  929. the effects

  930. of our

  931. economy

  932. shutting

  933. down.

  934. We pray

  935. for God

  936. to keep

  937. our family

  938. members safe.

  939. And we pray

  940. for God

  941. to keep

  942. our medical

  943. workers safe

  944. and the

  945. people working

  946. in the

  947. grocery stores

  948. so we can

  949. continue to

  950. get food.

  951. We continue

  952. to pray.

  953. And you

  954. see,

  955. God is

  956. honored when

  957. we pray

  958. like this.

  959. When we

  960. make these

  961. requests to

  962. God,

  963. Father,

  964. if you're

  965. willing,

  966. remove this

  967. cup from

  968. us.

  969. When we

  970. make those

  971. kinds of

  972. requests to

  973. God,

  974. on the one

  975. hand,

  976. we glorify

  977. God for

  978. his power.

  979. We're

  980. acknowledging

  981. that God

  982. is almighty

  983. and he can

  984. actually do

  985. something about

  986. it.

  987. And at the

  988. same time,

  989. when we pray

  990. those prayers,

  991. we glorify

  992. God for

  993. his goodness.

  994. We

  995. acknowledge

  996. that God

  997. is loving

  998. and like a

  999. good human

  1000. parent,

  1001. God gives

  1002. good gifts

  1003. to his

  1004. children.

  1005. So in

  1006. taking all

  1007. of our

  1008. needs and

  1009. our concerns

  1010. to God

  1011. and wrestling

  1012. with God

  1013. in prayer,

  1014. we're actually

  1015. exalting God's

  1016. power,

  1017. we're exalting

  1018. his goodness.

  1019. So we

  1020. pray,

  1021. Father,

  1022. if you're

  1023. willing,

  1024. remove this

  1025. cup from

  1026. us.

  1027. But lastly,

  1028. Jesus invites

  1029. us to pray,

  1030. nevertheless,

  1031. not my

  1032. will,

  1033. but yours

  1034. be done.

  1035. Now,

  1036. I imagine

  1037. that if I

  1038. gave us all

  1039. a little

  1040. theology quiz,

  1041. we would

  1042. all get

  1043. straight A's,

  1044. you know,

  1045. if we sort

  1046. of pumped

  1047. out onto

  1048. the Facebook

  1049. feed two

  1050. questions,

  1051. true or

  1052. false?

  1053. God is

  1054. wiser than

  1055. we are.

  1056. True or

  1057. false?

  1058. God is

  1059. more loving

  1060. and good

  1061. than we

  1062. are.

  1063. Suddenly,

  1064. they would

  1065. all start

  1066. ringing back,

  1067. ping, ping, ping,

  1068. ping, ping, ping,

  1069. ping, and we'd

  1070. all get 100%,

  1071. true and

  1072. true.

  1073. God is

  1074. wiser than

  1075. we are.

  1076. God is

  1077. more loving

  1078. and good

  1079. than we

  1080. are.

  1081. Great,

  1082. we've all

  1083. passed the

  1084. test,

  1085. but when

  1086. trials come,

  1087. we often

  1088. realize that

  1089. head knowledge

  1090. of God

  1091. is not

  1092. heart knowledge

  1093. of God.

  1094. When trials

  1095. come,

  1096. the wisdom

  1097. of God

  1098. and the love

  1099. of God

  1100. start to

  1101. come under

  1102. question,

  1103. don't they?

  1104. God

  1105. now,

  1106. of course,

  1107. we may

  1108. never know

  1109. why God

  1110. allows the

  1111. circumstances

  1112. in our lives,

  1113. the trials,

  1114. the tragedies,

  1115. but here's

  1116. what we do

  1117. know.

  1118. Look again

  1119. with me

  1120. at the

  1121. garden.

  1122. There you

  1123. see God

  1124. the Father

  1125. giving up

  1126. his only

  1127. son for

  1128. you,

  1129. and there

  1130. we see

  1131. God the

  1132. Son

  1133. willingly

  1134. drinking

  1135. the cup

  1136. for us.

  1137. You see,

  1138. whatever

  1139. God may

  1140. decree,

  1141. it cannot

  1142. be because

  1143. he doesn't

  1144. love us.

  1145. At the

  1146. cross,

  1147. in a

  1148. wisdom

  1149. that shames

  1150. the wise

  1151. of this

  1152. world,

  1153. God

  1154. proved

  1155. his love

  1156. without

  1157. reserve

  1158. so that

  1159. we can

  1160. trust

  1161. his love

  1162. without

  1163. hesitation

  1164. even when

  1165. times

  1166. are hard.

  1167. And so

  1168. we too

  1169. can pray,

  1170. nevertheless,

  1171. not my

  1172. will,

  1173. but yours

  1174. be done.

  1175. And notice

  1176. what courage

  1177. and what

  1178. compassion

  1179. that prayer

  1180. gives to

  1181. Jesus.

  1182. Praying the

  1183. prayer,

  1184. Father,

  1185. your will

  1186. be done.

  1187. Jesus then

  1188. moves from

  1189. agony to

  1190. courage and

  1191. compassion.

  1192. He meets

  1193. his betrayer

  1194. and offers him

  1195. one last chance

  1196. to change his

  1197. mind.

  1198. He heals

  1199. the servant

  1200. of his

  1201. enemy and

  1202. tells the

  1203. disciples to

  1204. put their

  1205. swords away.

  1206. He addresses

  1207. those who

  1208. would arrest

  1209. him with

  1210. the challenging

  1211. light of

  1212. truth.

  1213. How will

  1214. we face

  1215. our trials

  1216. with such

  1217. courage and

  1218. compassion?

  1219. When we

  1220. in prayer,

  1221. when we've

  1222. wrestled,

  1223. and when we've

  1224. said with

  1225. Christ,

  1226. not my

  1227. will,

  1228. but yours

  1229. be done,

  1230. then we

  1231. can step

  1232. forth with

  1233. the same

  1234. courage and

  1235. the same

  1236. compassion of

  1237. Jesus.

  1238. And so

  1239. then,

  1240. friends,

  1241. like the

  1242. disciples,

  1243. we may be

  1244. facing the

  1245. biggest trial

  1246. of our

  1247. lives,

  1248. but like

  1249. the disciples,

  1250. we too

  1251. have a

  1252. Savior in

  1253. the Lord

  1254. Jesus,

  1255. who intercedes

  1256. for us,

  1257. who prays for

  1258. us,

  1259. who's standing

  1260. even now,

  1261. risen,

  1262. glorified at

  1263. the right

  1264. hand of the

  1265. Father,

  1266. so that we

  1267. might come

  1268. to the

  1269. Father in

  1270. his name,

  1271. and so that

  1272. we might pray

  1273. with confidence

  1274. to God as

  1275. our Father.

  1276. Father,

  1277. if you're

  1278. willing,

  1279. remove this

  1280. cup,

  1281. nevertheless,

  1282. not my

  1283. will,

  1284. but yours

  1285. be done.

  1286. And having

  1287. that kind

  1288. of confidence

  1289. in Jesus,

  1290. we too

  1291. can face

  1292. the trials

  1293. of our

  1294. time with

  1295. courage and

  1296. with compassion.

  1297. Let's pray

  1298. together.

  1299. Lord Jesus,

  1300. we confess

  1301. that oftentimes

  1302. we can

  1303. feel the

  1304. same

  1305. sort of

  1306. agony in

  1307. such a

  1308. smaller degree,

  1309. Lord,

  1310. we acknowledge,

  1311. but we

  1312. too can

  1313. feel like

  1314. we're

  1315. wrestling and

  1316. striving in

  1317. prayer.

  1318. But we

  1319. thank you,

  1320. Jesus,

  1321. that you've

  1322. sent the

  1323. Holy Spirit

  1324. to be our

  1325. helper.

  1326. we pray

  1327. that you

  1328. would

  1329. strengthen

  1330. all of

  1331. us

  1332. to be

  1333. able to

  1334. pray and

  1335. slow down

  1336. in these

  1337. moments,

  1338. to remember

  1339. that you're

  1340. our Father,

  1341. to remember

  1342. that you're

  1343. good and

  1344. loving and

  1345. that your

  1346. plans are

  1347. good and

  1348. wise.

  1349. Lord,

  1350. help us

  1351. as the

  1352. church to

  1353. move

  1354. forth in

  1355. the confidence

  1356. that this

  1357. prayer provides.

  1358. Lord Jesus,

  1359. that your

  1360. finished work

  1361. provides so

  1362. that we

  1363. might be

  1364. light and

  1365. salt in

  1366. these needful

  1367. times.

  1368. We pray all

  1369. this in the

  1370. name of

  1371. Jesus.

  1372. Amen.

  1373. Well,

  1374. friends,

  1375. in response

  1376. to sharing

  1377. and looking at

  1378. God's word

  1379. together,

  1380. let's continue

  1381. to sing

  1382. together.
