  1. Well, good morning, church. You can turn with me in your Bibles to Luke chapter 24, starting at verse 13.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  2. We'll be looking at Luke chapter 24, verses 13 to 35 this morning, as we draw near to the conclusion of Luke's gospel, which we'll be finishing next week.

    Luke 24:13–35

  3. So let me read for us Luke chapter 24, starting at verse 13.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  4. That very day, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

  5. And they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

  6. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

  7. And he said to them, what is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?

  8. And they stood still, looking sad.

  9. Then one of them named Cleopas answered him, are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have happened there in these days?

  10. And he said to them, what things?

  11. And they said to him, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, the man who is a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

  12. and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.

  13. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.

  14. Yes, and besides all this, it's now the third day since these things happened.

  15. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us.

  16. They were at the tomb early in the morning.

  17. And when they didn't find his body, they came back, saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.

  18. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.

  19. And he said to them, O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.

  20. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?

  21. Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them and all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

  22. So they drew near to the village to which they were going.

  23. He acted as if he were going farther.

  24. But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.

  25. So he went in to stay with them.

  26. While he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.

  27. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him.

  28. And he vanished from their sight.

  29. They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?

  30. And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem.

  31. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying,

  32. The Lord has risen indeed and has appeared to Simon.

  33. Then they told what had happened on the road and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

  34. Our story this morning begins with disappointment, confusion, and grief.

  35. Two disciples walking towards a village named Emmaus.

  36. But these are not two friends taking a pleasant stroll on a Sunday afternoon, casually shooting the breeze.

  37. No, verse 15 says they were talking and discussing together.

  38. And that word discussing can also be translated arguing or disputing or going back and forth.

  39. They were engaged in a vigorous conversation about all these things that had just happened.

  40. How Jesus, the one who they had hoped would liberate their people.

  41. How he had been condemned to death and shamefully crucified.

  42. How had everything gone so wrong?

  43. The story they had been living in, the hopes that had sustained them, were now shattered into a hundred little pieces.

  44. And they couldn't see any way to put them back together again.

  45. They were distraught.

  46. They were despondent.

  47. They were downcast.

  48. And so they were walking away from Jerusalem.

  49. And that's a significant detail because for most of the Gospel of Luke, chapters 9 to chapter 19,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  50. Jesus was leading his disciples toward Jerusalem.

  51. And he repeatedly told them that his mission would be accomplished and fulfilled in Jerusalem.

  52. Chapter 18, verse 31, Jesus had said,

  53. See, we are going up to Jerusalem.

  54. And everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.

  55. For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon.

  56. And after flogging him, they will kill him.

  57. And on the third day he will rise.

  58. But then it says,

  59. And here these two disciples, having witnessed Jesus' crucifixion, were walking away from Jerusalem.

  60. Still lacking understandings of who Jesus was and what he had come to do.

  61. Even when Jesus joined them in person, it says,

  62. Their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

  63. Now perhaps we can relate to these disciples in their feelings of disappointment, confusion, grief.

  64. Maybe you're feeling disappointed and despondent these days.

  65. Perhaps some of your hopes have been dashed.

  66. Plans have been canceled, put on hold indefinitely.

  67. You're not quite sure what to hope for right now.

  68. The world seems topsy-turvy.

  69. Perhaps you feel like the disciples in verse 17.

  70. Standing still, looking sad.

  71. Or maybe you find yourself confused, distraught, on edge.

  72. You find yourself getting into heated arguments with the people who are closest to you.

  73. Or being rude to strangers if they seem naive and uninformed.

  74. Or maybe you're grieving.

  75. Downcast.

  76. Maybe you just want to walk away from it all.

  77. I felt that way.

  78. I've gone up and down over the last three or four weeks.

  79. I felt that way very strongly for a few days when everything was in the process of shutting down.

  80. I felt stir-crazy even when I hadn't been in my house all day.

  81. I wanted to get out, to go somewhere, to go anywhere.

  82. I was angry.

  83. I couldn't really pinpoint what I was angry about.

  84. I was quite unpleasant for the members of my household to be around, though they were very gracious and patient with me.

  85. Now, for some of you, feelings of disappointment and confusion and grief may not be primarily connected to the coronavirus.

  86. You might think, just being told to stay home for a few weeks?

  87. That's the least of the traumas I've been through.

  88. I'm used to life being unpredictable and confusing and disappointing and overwhelming.

  89. This isn't new for me at all.

  90. But regardless how particularly we might experience disappointment, confusion, and grief,

  91. what we see in this story is how Jesus meets us in the midst of all those things.

  92. And this morning we'll see in this passage that Jesus meets us in three ways.

  93. First, he listens to us patiently.

  94. We'll see this in verses 13 to 24.

  95. Second, we'll see that he challenges us boldly through the scriptures in verses 25 to 27.

  96. And third, we'll see that he breaks bread with us intimately in verses 28 to 35.

  97. So first, we see that Jesus listens to us patiently.

  98. You know, that's the first thing Jesus does for Cleopas and his companion.

  99. Jesus comes alongside them.

  100. He walks and talks with them, but mostly he listens.

  101. Now, maybe you're wondering, who was this guy Cleopas and who was his unnamed traveling companion?

  102. Well, presumably Luke refers to Cleopas by name to indicate that he was the source of the information in this story.

  103. Ancient books didn't have footnotes, but authors commonly referred to witnesses or sources by name.

  104. Now, Cleopas was likely part of one of the early church communities in Jerusalem or somewhere else.

  105. So at least some people back then would have known who he was.

  106. But over the last 2,000 years, that information has been lost.

  107. This is the only reference to Cleopas in the New Testament.

  108. There's one more possible clue in John chapter 19, verse 25,

    John 19:25

  109. which mentions a woman named Mary, the wife of Cleopas.

  110. C-L-O-P-A-S.

  111. Not quite spelled the same, but perhaps could be the same person,

  112. just had a variant spelling of their name.

  113. Anyway, Mary, the wife of Cleopas, is one of the witnesses who sees Jesus being crucified.

  114. Now, if Cleopas and Cleopas are the same person,

  115. perhaps Cleopas and his wife Mary were walking back home to Emmaus from Jerusalem together.

  116. Now, that's possible, but it's really only a guess.

  117. The only thing that is really clear to us is that Cleopas and his unnamed companion were not among the apostles.

  118. Right? When they go back to Jerusalem, they find the 11 apostles and the others with them.

  119. Like, Cleopas and his companion were like Mary and Martha,

  120. Joanna and Susanna, Zacchaeus and Bartimaeus,

  121. Simon of Cyrene and Joseph of Arimathea.

  122. They were among Jesus' devoted followers, but not in the inner circle of the 12.

  123. But that fact alone, I think, should encourage us.

  124. After Jesus' resurrection, Jesus did not only appear to the 12 apostles, to his inner circle.

  125. Jesus did not only appear to the future leaders of the church,

  126. whose names we all recognize 2,000 years later.

  127. Jesus sees and Jesus cares for every one of his disciples,

  128. no matter how well known or how little known we are.

  129. No matter whether future generations on earth will remember our name or not.

  130. We may not know much about Cleopas and his companion, but Jesus knew them.

  131. And Jesus came alongside them, and Jesus took the time to walk with them

  132. and listen to them as they were heading down the road.

  133. Notice how patiently and kindly Jesus engaged with them.

  134. He began by asking simple, open-ended questions.

  135. What's on your mind?

  136. What are you all talking about as you walk down the road?

  137. Now, Cleopas' initial response in verse 18 was borderline insulting.

  138. Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know what happened?

  139. In other words, are you completely clueless?

  140. Clueless?

  141. But Jesus wasn't put off by Cleopas' rudeness.

  142. He graciously overlooked an ignorant insult,

  143. and he just asked another open-ended question.

  144. What things?

  145. What are these things?

  146. How would you put it in your own words?

  147. What are you talking about?

  148. What are you thinking about all this?

  149. You see, what's Jesus doing here?

  150. He's drawing them out.

  151. Proverbs 20, verse 5 says,

    Proverbs 20:5

  152. The purpose in a person's heart is like deep water,

  153. but a person of understanding draws it out.

  154. And Jesus came alongside his disciples like a wise counselor,

  155. like an understanding friend,

  156. asking simple questions and taking the time to listen,

  157. to draw them out.

  158. In verse 19 through 24,

  159. we see the two friends launching into their confused thoughts.

  160. It's almost like a stream of consciousness concerning Jesus,

  161. a prophet mighty in deed and word.

  162. Do you notice how many times they say,

  163. and, or besides, or moreover?

  164. And, how the chief priests and rulers delivered him up.

  165. But we had hoped,

  166. and besides all this is the third day,

  167. moreover some women amazed us,

  168. and they didn't see his body,

  169. and they came back,

  170. and then some of those with us went,

  171. but they didn't see him.

  172. Right?

  173. They're sort of telling all these facts that are on their mind,

  174. but they can't quite put it all together.

  175. They can't quite make sense of everything that's happened.

  176. They had a lot on their minds,

  177. but they were puzzled.

  178. And even though Jesus knew far better

  179. what had happened and why it all happened,

  180. he didn't immediately interrupt them.

  181. He kept on listening.

  182. And that's part of what a good friend does.

  183. You know, a good friend doesn't call you up on the phone

  184. when you're disappointed,

  185. or distraught,

  186. or downcast,

  187. and just start preaching at you.

  188. No, a good friend takes the time to listen,

  189. and ask questions,

  190. and hear you out.

  191. And Jesus is still that faithful friend

  192. who listens patiently to his disciples.

  193. Jesus has ascended into heaven,

  194. so we shouldn't expect him to show up physically as he did here,

  195. but he is still just as real,

  196. and just as present,

  197. and just as patient

  198. as he was back then.

  199. Jesus is not put off when we are prickly

  200. or on edge.

  201. He graciously pursues us

  202. when we are downcast or discouraged

  203. or ready to walk away from it all.

  204. He patiently listens to us

  205. even when we ramble on

  206. somewhat incoherently.

  207. I mean, imagine listening to all the prayers

  208. that people pray to God every day.

  209. Right?

  210. Most of us,

  211. if we had to listen to all those prayers,

  212. we would get,

  213. we would become impatient.

  214. Right?

  215. All the people accusing God

  216. for things that God didn't do,

  217. or, you know,

  218. that are due to the sin in the world,

  219. all the, you know,

  220. all of us who see only,

  221. all of us who want something

  222. that isn't ultimately the best for us.

  223. But Jesus is very patient.

  224. He listens to all of our prayers.

  225. He wants to draw us out.

  226. It's helpful for us

  227. to put our thoughts and feelings into words

  228. even when we don't quite know

  229. what we're thinking

  230. or what we're feeling.

  231. Jesus is patient.

  232. He listens to them

  233. even when they foolishly think

  234. that they know more than he does.

  235. Jesus listens to us patiently.

  236. That's the first thing that we see.

  237. But that's not all that Jesus does.

  238. The next thing we see

  239. in verses 25 to 27

  240. is that Jesus challenges us boldly.

  241. And he does so through the scriptures.

  242. You see, a good friend

  243. does not only listen

  244. and ask non-directive questions

  245. and express support and affirmation.

  246. And a good friend also confronts

  247. and challenges

  248. our misguided assumptions.

  249. And in verse 25,

  250. Jesus spoke a word of challenge.

  251. Oh, foolish ones,

  252. and slow of heart to believe

  253. all that the prophets have spoken.

  254. Wasn't it necessary

  255. that the Messiah, the Christ,

  256. should suffer these things

  257. and enter into his glory?

  258. You see, Jesus recognized

  259. and exposed

  260. one of their deeply held

  261. but deeply misguided assumptions.

  262. Now, what was that assumption?

  263. It was this.

  264. Their assumption was

  265. redemption means

  266. deliverance from suffering.

  267. Look at verse 21.

  268. We had hoped

  269. that Jesus was the one

  270. to redeem Israel.

  271. Now, that word redeem

  272. means liberate,

  273. to liberate from captivity

  274. or bondage.

  275. See, like many other

  276. faithful Jews of their day,

  277. Cleopas and his companion

  278. were hoping that one day

  279. God would send the Messiah,

  280. the anointed one,

  281. the king,

  282. who would deliver them

  283. from oppression and bondage.

  284. And their assumption

  285. was that the Messiah

  286. would be a holy conqueror

  287. who would defeat

  288. all their enemies,

  289. who would rule

  290. over foreign nations,

  291. and who would judge

  292. the earth in righteousness.

  293. But instead,

  294. Jesus,

  295. and they were hoping

  296. that Jesus was that.

  297. But instead,

  298. Jesus had been rejected

  299. by the Jewish leaders

  300. and crucified

  301. by the Roman authorities.

  302. His life ended

  303. in utter disgrace.

  304. And so they came

  305. to a conclusion

  306. that seemed completely natural

  307. given their assumption.

  308. therefore,

  309. Jesus must not be

  310. the Messiah.

  311. He must not be

  312. the Redeemer

  313. and Liberator

  314. that we were hoping for.

  315. But in verse 26,

  316. Jesus directly challenged

  317. that assumption.

  318. Wasn't it necessary?

  319. Now that word

  320. is a word that Luke

  321. uses about ten times

  322. throughout his gospel

  323. to refer to

  324. God's

  325. defined

  326. plan

  327. and purpose.

  328. So wasn't it necessary?

  329. In other words,

  330. wasn't it God's plan

  331. and purpose

  332. all along

  333. that the Christ,

  334. the Messiah,

  335. should suffer

  336. precisely these things

  337. and only after

  338. his suffering

  339. enter into

  340. his glory?

  341. So

  342. he says to them,

  343. you should know

  344. that already

  345. because the scriptures

  346. have been saying

  347. that all along.

  348. You see,

  349. according to Jesus,

  350. redemption

  351. is not just

  352. deliverance

  353. from suffering,

  354. it's also

  355. deliverance

  356. through suffering.

  357. The pathway

  358. to glory

  359. runs

  360. through

  361. suffering

  362. and not

  363. around it.

  364. That's what

  365. Jesus says.

  366. And Jesus says

  367. that that message

  368. runs through

  369. the whole Old Testament.

  370. Now you might ask,

  371. where in the Old Testament

  372. does Jesus

  373. get that idea?

  374. That the pathway

  375. to glory

  376. runs

  377. through

  378. suffering

  379. and not

  380. around it.

  381. And that even

  382. the Messiah

  383. would have to

  384. suffer

  385. before

  386. entering

  387. his glory.

  388. Now the idea

  389. that the Messiah

  390. would suffer

  391. was certainly

  392. not the prevailing

  393. interpretation

  394. of the Old Testament

  395. in Jesus' day.

  396. Modern scholars

  397. have found

  398. many ancient

  399. Jewish writings

  400. from the period

  401. between the Old

  402. and New Testaments.

  403. And different rabbis

  404. and different Jewish sects

  405. had different ideas

  406. and expectations

  407. about the Messiah,

  408. who he would be,

  409. and what he would do.

  410. But on one thing

  411. they all agreed.

  412. The Messiah

  413. would be

  414. a victorious

  415. conqueror.

  416. He would not

  417. suffer rejection

  418. and betrayal

  419. from his own people.

  420. He would not

  421. be condemned

  422. to die

  423. by a foreign ruler.

  424. he would not

  425. be shamefully

  426. mocked

  427. and hanged

  428. on a tree.

  429. No Jewish

  430. teacher

  431. before Jesus

  432. from all that we know

  433. had ever considered

  434. that the Messiah

  435. might suffer

  436. in those ways.

  437. But Jesus said

  438. this is what

  439. the scriptures

  440. have been saying

  441. all along.

  442. Now just think

  443. about

  444. what we see

  445. in the Old Testament.

  446. Think about

  447. the stories

  448. of the most famous

  449. leaders in the Old Testament.

  450. Moses and David.

  451. Most people expected

  452. the Messiah

  453. to be a prophet

  454. like Moses

  455. and a ruler

  456. like David.

  457. But think about

  458. their stories.

  459. Take Moses.

  460. Moses' life

  461. began with suffering.

  462. He was born

  463. into a people group

  464. whose very existence

  465. was threatened,

  466. who were enslaved.

  467. And even though

  468. he was spared

  469. from mortal danger

  470. as a child

  471. and raised

  472. in Pharaoh's household,

  473. he didn't

  474. immediately rise up

  475. to power and glory.

  476. No,

  477. when Moses grew up,

  478. he identified

  479. with his own people

  480. and saw their suffering

  481. and it moved him.

  482. But his own people

  483. rejected him

  484. and then Pharaoh

  485. wanted to kill him

  486. and so he fled

  487. to Midian

  488. and had to live there

  489. as a foreigner

  490. for 40 years

  491. in the middle

  492. of nowhere.

  493. And then

  494. when he finally

  495. returned to Egypt

  496. to rescue

  497. the children of Israel

  498. to liberate them

  499. from slavery,

  500. he faced

  501. fierce opposition

  502. from Pharaoh

  503. and stubborn disbelief

  504. from his own people.

  505. and then

  506. when he finally

  507. leads them out,

  508. he leads them

  509. into the desert

  510. and he has to lead

  511. them in the desert

  512. for years and years.

  513. And a few times,

  514. the people he's leading

  515. want to kill him.

  516. For Moses,

  517. the pathway to glory

  518. ran straight through

  519. intense suffering,

  520. rejection,

  521. and shame.

  522. The same pattern

  523. holds if you look

  524. at the life of David

  525. in the books

  526. of 1 and 2 Samuel.

  527. David's anointed king

  528. by the prophet Samuel

  529. and then

  530. what happens next?

  531. Does he ascend

  532. to the throne

  533. and win battles

  534. over all his enemies?

  535. No.

  536. Immediately,

  537. King Saul

  538. wants to kill him

  539. and David

  540. has to flee

  541. for his life

  542. and for years,

  543. David lives on the run,

  544. hungry,

  545. thirsty,

  546. in caves,

  547. in the mountains,

  548. in the desert,

  549. in the forest,

  550. among Israel's enemies.

  551. Only after years

  552. and years

  553. of suffering

  554. does David

  555. rise to glory

  556. as king.

  557. Or take one

  558. other example.

  559. Take Joseph

  560. in the book

  561. of Genesis.

  562. Now,

  563. Joseph's life

  564. seems to start out well.

  565. He was the favored

  566. son of his father,

  567. Jacob,

  568. in line

  569. to receive

  570. the lion's share

  571. of the inheritance

  572. but then

  573. his brothers

  574. get jealous

  575. and they turn on him

  576. and they sell him

  577. into slavery.

  578. They sell him

  579. for the price

  580. of a slave.

  581. He's taken to Egypt,

  582. falsely accused,

  583. thrown into a dungeon

  584. and forgotten.

  585. He descended

  586. to the depths.

  587. And only later on

  588. was Joseph remembered

  589. and raised up

  590. to the right hand

  591. of Pharaoh

  592. and through Joseph

  593. the world

  594. was rescued

  595. from famine

  596. and his family

  597. was reconciled

  598. to each other

  599. but once again

  600. in the life of Joseph

  601. suffering came

  602. before glory.

  603. You see this pattern

  604. throughout the Old Testament.

  605. The pathway to glory

  606. runs straight

  607. through suffering.

  608. And Jesus says

  609. if that was the case

  610. for Moses

  611. and David

  612. and Joseph

  613. don't you see

  614. that it was God's plan

  615. all along

  616. for the Messiah

  617. as well

  618. to suffer

  619. before entering

  620. into his glorious reign.

  621. And you know

  622. it's not just

  623. the stories

  624. of the Old Testament

  625. that show us

  626. this pattern.

  627. You can hear

  628. the same haunting melody

  629. in the songs.

  630. Songs like Psalm 22

  631. which begins

  632. My God,

  633. my God,

  634. why have you forsaken me?

  635. The first part

  636. of the psalm

  637. is about the suffering

  638. of a righteous person

  639. but the end

  640. of the psalm

  641. is a cry of victory.

  642. It ends by saying

  643. he has done it.

  644. Or look at Isaiah 53

  645. the song

  646. of the suffering servant.

  647. He's cut off

  648. from the land

  649. of the living

  650. stricken for the transgression

  651. of his people

  652. yet the next verse

  653. says he will see

  654. his offspring

  655. and prolong his days.

  656. The haunting melody

  657. underneath so many

  658. of the songs

  659. of the Old Testament

  660. the prophecies

  661. and the psalms

  662. is that suffering

  663. comes before glory.

  664. And you can also

  665. see it in the symbols

  666. in the Passover lamb

  667. that was slain

  668. every year

  669. to commemorate

  670. the deliverance

  671. of the people

  672. of Israel

  673. from Egypt.

  674. Their redemption

  675. came at a price.

  676. And in all

  677. the sacrifices

  678. in the temple

  679. that over and over

  680. declared

  681. the forgiveness

  682. of sins

  683. and restoration

  684. of fellowship

  685. with God

  686. would only be possible

  687. through the shedding

  688. of blood.

  689. You see the stories

  690. and the songs

  691. and the symbols

  692. of the Old Testament

  693. all speak of God's redemption

  694. not as just deliverance

  695. from suffering

  696. but as deliverance

  697. through suffering.

  698. Cleopas and his companion

  699. couldn't see

  700. that Jesus was the Messiah

  701. because they couldn't imagine

  702. that the Messiah

  703. could possibly suffer

  704. in such a shameful way

  705. as Jesus had.

  706. And Jesus exposed

  707. and challenged

  708. their misguided

  709. assumptions

  710. so they could

  711. see him

  712. for who he really was

  713. the Messiah

  714. who had suffered

  715. and who was now

  716. ascending

  717. into glory.

  718. But you know

  719. many of us

  720. share the same

  721. assumption

  722. of Cleopas

  723. and his friend.

  724. Don't we

  725. also want

  726. a direct route

  727. to glory

  728. that bypasses

  729. suffering?

  730. or at least

  731. that bypasses

  732. certain kinds

  733. of suffering

  734. that we think

  735. are especially

  736. burdensome?

  737. Oh, we say

  738. that we trust

  739. and love God

  740. as long as he gives us

  741. what we think

  742. is fair,

  743. reasonable,

  744. or at least bearable

  745. from our point of view.

  746. But when God

  747. in his sovereignty

  748. completely disregards

  749. our standards

  750. and our expectations

  751. there's at least

  752. a part of us

  753. that just wants

  754. to walk away.

  755. At times

  756. don't we become

  757. spiritually

  758. despondent,

  759. downcast,

  760. and distraught

  761. because we feel

  762. like God

  763. hasn't given us

  764. the glory,

  765. the power,

  766. the comfort,

  767. the life we've

  768. always wanted

  769. and instead

  770. he's put us

  771. in a situation

  772. where we must

  773. endure suffering

  774. and loss

  775. and shame

  776. and pain

  777. that we didn't

  778. ask for

  779. and didn't agree to.

  780. And like

  781. Cleopas

  782. and his companion

  783. we can conclude

  784. that maybe

  785. Jesus hasn't

  786. come to redeem

  787. and liberate us

  788. after all.

  789. But how foolish

  790. we are.

  791. How slow

  792. of heart

  793. to trust

  794. what God

  795. has been doing

  796. all along.

  797. In this fallen

  798. world

  799. the pathway

  800. to glory

  801. runs through

  802. suffering

  803. and not

  804. around it.

  805. now

  806. that's a

  807. hard truth.

  808. It was a

  809. hard truth

  810. for them

  811. to accept

  812. back then.

  813. It's a

  814. hard truth

  815. for us

  816. to accept

  817. now.

  818. But here

  819. is our

  820. hope

  821. and our

  822. strength.

  823. This very

  824. pathway

  825. our Savior

  826. has trod

  827. before us.

  828. Jesus Christ

  829. has blazed

  830. the trail

  831. through

  832. suffering

  833. into glory

  834. with his

  835. own blood.

  836. blood.

  837. It's as if

  838. the trail

  839. markers

  840. remind us

  841. of his

  842. blood-stained

  843. hands

  844. and yet

  845. that he

  846. has gone

  847. before us

  848. and risen

  849. again.

  850. You see

  851. the road

  852. that we're

  853. traveling

  854. hard though

  855. it may be

  856. is not

  857. a dead

  858. end.

  859. When we

  860. walk with

  861. Jesus

  862. through

  863. suffering

  864. whether it's

  865. suffering

  866. that we

  867. simply can't

  868. avoid

  869. as human

  870. beings

  871. or whether

  872. it's

  873. suffering

  874. that we

  875. willingly

  876. take on

  877. in order

  878. to

  879. sacrificially

  880. serve

  881. others

  882. or

  883. suffering

  884. for the

  885. sake

  886. of

  887. obedience

  888. to the

  889. gospel

  890. itself

  891. Jesus

  892. promises

  893. that he

  894. will build

  895. in us

  896. endurance

  897. character

  898. and hope

  899. and an

  900. eternal

  901. weight of

  902. glory

  903. beyond all

  904. comparison.

  905. So

  906. brothers and

  907. sisters

  908. let's

  909. consider the

  910. suffering

  911. that Jesus

  912. endured.

  913. Consider the

  914. glory that

  915. he now

  916. enjoys

  917. and consider

  918. that in

  919. it all

  920. in the

  921. suffering

  922. and in

  923. the glory

  924. we are

  925. united

  926. with him.

  927. He has

  928. gone before

  929. us

  930. and he

  931. is with

  932. us.

  933. So Jesus

  934. listens

  935. patiently

  936. to us

  937. he corrects

  938. us

  939. boldly

  940. through the

  941. scriptures

  942. and finally

  943. Jesus breaks

  944. bread with

  945. us

  946. intimately.

  947. verse 28

  948. so they

  949. drew near

  950. to the

  951. village

  952. to which

  953. they were

  954. going

  955. Jesus

  956. acted

  957. as if

  958. he were

  959. going

  960. farther

  961. but they

  962. urged him

  963. strongly

  964. saying stay

  965. with us

  966. so he

  967. went in

  968. to stay

  969. with them

  970. when he

  971. was at

  972. table with

  973. them he

  974. took the

  975. bread

  976. and blessed

  977. and broke

  978. it and gave

  979. it to them

  980. and their

  981. eyes were

  982. opened and

  983. they recognized

  984. him.

  985. You know

  986. the climax

  987. of this

  988. story does

  989. not come

  990. in Jesus

  991. masterful

  992. exposition

  993. and interpretation

  994. of the

  995. Old Testament

  996. important as

  997. that was

  998. but in his

  999. table fellowship

  1000. with his

  1001. disciples.

  1002. Their hearts

  1003. were burning

  1004. within them

  1005. on the road

  1006. when he opened

  1007. up the

  1008. scriptures

  1009. and that's

  1010. what motivated

  1011. them

  1012. to urge him

  1013. so strongly

  1014. stay with

  1015. us

  1016. don't leave

  1017. us

  1018. we want

  1019. more

  1020. we want

  1021. you to be

  1022. our guest

  1023. our honored

  1024. guest.

  1025. You know

  1026. sometimes people

  1027. don't yet

  1028. have a clear

  1029. understanding

  1030. of who

  1031. Jesus is

  1032. they can't

  1033. quite put

  1034. that into

  1035. words

  1036. but they

  1037. have a deep

  1038. sense

  1039. I need

  1040. him

  1041. I need

  1042. that

  1043. and maybe

  1044. you've

  1045. sent

  1046. maybe that's

  1047. you

  1048. maybe you've

  1049. sensed the

  1050. presence of

  1051. God in

  1052. Jesus

  1053. you feel

  1054. drawn to

  1055. Jesus

  1056. for some

  1057. reason

  1058. even though

  1059. you can't

  1060. quite put

  1061. it into

  1062. words

  1063. even though

  1064. you might

  1065. have lots

  1066. of questions

  1067. and remaining

  1068. doubts

  1069. but if that's

  1070. you reach

  1071. out to

  1072. Jesus in

  1073. prayer

  1074. say Jesus

  1075. I want

  1076. you

  1077. I need

  1078. you

  1079. help me

  1080. stay with

  1081. me

  1082. don't

  1083. leave

  1084. me

  1085. Jesus

  1086. responds

  1087. to prayers

  1088. like

  1089. that

  1090. you know

  1091. if

  1092. Cleopas

  1093. and his

  1094. companion

  1095. hadn't

  1096. urged

  1097. Jesus

  1098. to stay

  1099. most likely

  1100. Jesus

  1101. would have

  1102. simply

  1103. passed

  1104. on

  1105. continued

  1106. on his

  1107. way

  1108. and they

  1109. would have

  1110. missed

  1111. out

  1112. but don't

  1113. miss out

  1114. on Jesus

  1115. someone said

  1116. only those

  1117. who desire

  1118. his company

  1119. will come

  1120. to a deeper

  1121. realization

  1122. of his

  1123. identity

  1124. and you

  1125. know that

  1126. prayer is

  1127. not just

  1128. for people

  1129. who don't

  1130. yet know

  1131. Jesus

  1132. personally

  1133. or who

  1134. are just

  1135. beginning to

  1136. see him

  1137. for the

  1138. first time

  1139. that prayer

  1140. is for

  1141. all of us

  1142. who have

  1143. tasted

  1144. and seen

  1145. that he

  1146. is good

  1147. who have

  1148. trusted him

  1149. and claim

  1150. him as

  1151. our Lord

  1152. let us

  1153. cry out

  1154. to know

  1155. him more

  1156. deeply

  1157. more purely

  1158. more fully

  1159. Lord

  1160. stay

  1161. with

  1162. us

  1163. don't

  1164. leave

  1165. us

  1166. now

  1167. you know

  1168. we shouldn't

  1169. just think

  1170. well

  1171. you know

  1172. if Jesus

  1173. is God

  1174. I guess

  1175. he'll do

  1176. what he

  1177. wants to

  1178. do

  1179. and if

  1180. he wants

  1181. to draw

  1182. close to

  1183. me

  1184. and help

  1185. me

  1186. he will

  1187. and if

  1188. he doesn't

  1189. he won't

  1190. so there's

  1191. nothing I

  1192. can really

  1193. say or do

  1194. about it

  1195. no

  1196. Jesus

  1197. wants to

  1198. whet our

  1199. appetite

  1200. so that we

  1201. earnestly

  1202. desire

  1203. and seek

  1204. out

  1205. closeness

  1206. with him

  1207. so that we

  1208. say stay

  1209. with us

  1210. Lord

  1211. and he

  1212. says yes

  1213. I will

  1214. you know

  1215. the beautiful

  1216. thing is

  1217. when we

  1218. pray

  1219. Jesus

  1220. often gives

  1221. us far

  1222. more than

  1223. we ask

  1224. for

  1225. because Jesus

  1226. doesn't come

  1227. just to be

  1228. their guest

  1229. when they

  1230. sit down at

  1231. the table

  1232. Jesus

  1233. becomes the

  1234. host

  1235. he takes

  1236. the bread

  1237. and breaks

  1238. it and

  1239. gives it

  1240. to them

  1241. just like

  1242. he had

  1243. done when

  1244. he fed

  1245. the 5,000

  1246. on the

  1247. hillside

  1248. and just

  1249. like he

  1250. had done

  1251. when he

  1252. ate the

  1253. last supper

  1254. with his

  1255. disciples

  1256. what was

  1257. Jesus

  1258. saying

  1259. by

  1260. becoming

  1261. the host

  1262. of this

  1263. meal

  1264. he was

  1265. saying

  1266. I am

  1267. your

  1268. good

  1269. shepherd

  1270. I

  1271. will

  1272. lead

  1273. you

  1274. and

  1275. feed

  1276. you

  1277. I

  1278. will

  1279. take

  1280. care

  1281. of

  1282. you

  1283. and

  1284. I

  1285. will

  1286. do

  1287. so

  1288. even

  1289. to the

  1290. point

  1291. of

  1292. laying

  1293. down

  1294. my

  1295. life

  1296. for

  1297. you

  1298. on

  1299. the

  1300. road

  1301. their

  1302. hearts

  1303. were

  1304. burning

  1305. but

  1306. at

  1307. the

  1308. table

  1309. their

  1310. eyes

  1311. were

  1312. opened

  1313. and

  1314. then

  1315. Jesus

  1316. vanished

  1317. now

  1318. that

  1319. might

  1320. raise

  1321. questions

  1322. for

  1323. us

  1324. but

  1325. Jesus

  1326. was

  1327. about

  1328. to

  1329. ascend

  1330. to

  1331. his

  1332. father

  1333. in

  1334. heaven

  1335. so

  1336. he

  1337. wasn't

  1338. going to

  1339. hang

  1340. around

  1341. in

  1342. one

  1343. place

  1344. very

  1345. long

  1346. in

  1347. his

  1348. resurrected

  1349. body

  1350. but

  1351. here's

  1352. the point

  1353. in our

  1354. disappointment

  1355. in our

  1356. confusion

  1357. in our

  1358. grief

  1359. Jesus

  1360. comes

  1361. alongside

  1362. us

  1363. and

  1364. patiently

  1365. listens

  1366. to

  1367. us

  1368. and

  1369. he

  1370. confronts

  1371. and

  1372. challenges

  1373. our

  1374. misguided

  1375. assumptions

  1376. through

  1377. the

  1378. scriptures

  1379. but

  1380. Jesus

  1381. hasn't

  1382. come

  1383. just

  1384. to

  1385. lend

  1386. a

  1387. listening

  1388. ear

  1389. or

  1390. only

  1391. to

  1392. teach

  1393. us

  1394. important

  1395. truths

  1396. but

  1397. to

  1398. share

  1399. life

  1400. with

  1401. us

  1402. to

  1403. break

  1404. bread

  1405. with

  1406. us

  1407. to

  1408. look

  1409. us

  1410. straight

  1411. in

  1412. the

  1413. eye

  1414. and

  1415. say

  1416. you

  1417. are

  1418. mine

  1419. and

  1420. I

  1421. am

  1422. yours

  1423. now

  1424. and

  1425. forever

  1426. and

  1427. in the

  1428. book of

  1429. revelation

    Revelation 3:20

  1430. chapter 3

  1431. verse 20

  1432. Jesus

  1433. holds

  1434. out

  1435. that

  1436. promise

  1437. of

  1438. intimate

  1439. fellowship

  1440. to

  1441. everyone

  1442. who

  1443. believes

  1444. in

  1445. him

  1446. behold

  1447. Jesus

  1448. says

  1449. I

  1450. stand

  1451. at

  1452. the

  1453. door

  1454. and

  1455. knock

  1456. if

  1457. anyone

  1458. hears

  1459. my

  1460. voice

  1461. and

  1462. opens

  1463. the

  1464. door

  1465. I

  1466. will

  1467. come

  1468. into

  1469. him

  1470. and

  1471. eat

  1472. with

  1473. him

  1474. and

  1475. he

  1476. with

  1477. me

  1478. that's

  1479. what

  1480. Jesus

  1481. promises

  1482. to

  1483. be

  1484. with

  1485. us

  1486. yes

  1487. to

  1488. listen

  1489. to

  1490. us

  1491. yes

  1492. to

  1493. teach

  1494. us

  1495. but

  1496. ultimately

  1497. to

  1498. dwell

  1499. with

  1500. us

  1501. the

  1502. story

  1503. began

  1504. with

  1505. disappointment

  1506. confusion

  1507. and

  1508. grief

  1509. but

  1510. it

  1511. ends

  1512. with

  1513. courage

  1514. clarity

  1515. and

  1516. hope

  1517. verse

  1518. 33

  1519. they

  1520. rose

  1521. with

  1522. renewed

  1523. courage

  1524. instead

  1525. of walking

  1526. away

  1527. in

  1528. disappointment

  1529. they

  1530. returned

  1531. to

  1532. Jerusalem

  1533. without

  1534. delay

  1535. that

  1536. same

  1537. hour

  1538. they

  1539. went

  1540. right

  1541. back

  1542. to

  1543. the

  1544. place

  1545. they

  1546. had

  1547. previously

  1548. wanted

  1549. to

  1550. run

  1551. away

  1552. from

  1553. to

  1554. a

  1555. place

  1556. where

  1557. as

  1558. Jesus

  1559. disciples

  1560. they

  1561. might

  1562. be

  1563. persecuted

  1564. only

  1565. three

  1566. days

  1567. ago

  1568. Jesus

  1569. had

  1570. been

  1571. killed

  1572. there

  1573. but

  1574. they

  1575. went

  1576. right

  1577. back

  1578. with

  1579. renewed

  1580. courage

  1581. and

  1582. when

  1583. Jesus

  1584. meets

  1585. us

  1586. he

  1587. gives

  1588. us

  1589. courage

  1590. to

  1591. go

  1592. back

  1593. even

  1594. to

  1595. hard

  1596. places

  1597. that

  1598. previously

  1599. we

  1600. wanted

  1601. to

  1602. run

  1603. away

  1604. from

  1605. and

  1606. then

  1607. verse

  1608. 33

  1609. says

  1610. they

  1611. found

  1612. they

  1613. rose

  1614. with

  1615. courage

  1616. and

  1617. they

  1618. found

  1619. the

  1620. eleven

  1621. and

  1622. those

  1623. with

  1624. them

  1625. gathered

  1626. and

  1627. proclaiming

  1628. the

  1629. Lord

  1630. has

  1631. risen

  1632. indeed

  1633. their

  1634. confusion

  1635. was

  1636. replaced

  1637. with

  1638. clarity

  1639. now

  1640. there

  1641. are only

  1642. two

  1643. places

  1644. in

  1645. Luke

  1646. where

  1647. that

  1648. word

  1649. translated

  1650. indeed

  1651. appears

  1652. the

  1653. first

  1654. place

  1655. is

  1656. when

  1657. Jesus

  1658. dies

  1659. and

  1660. the

  1661. centurion

  1662. says

  1663. indeed

  1664. he

  1665. was a

  1666. righteous

  1667. man

  1668. and

  1669. now

  1670. at

  1671. the

  1672. end

  1673. of

  1674. the

  1675. story

  1676. the

  1677. disciples

  1678. proclaim

  1679. indeed

  1680. he

  1681. has

  1682. risen

  1683. you

  1684. see

  1685. at

  1686. the

  1687. end

  1688. of

  1689. the

  1690. story

  1691. at

  1705. great

  1706. clarity

  1707. about

  1708. Jesus

  1711. righteous

  1712. all

  1713. the

  1714. way

  1715. to

  1716. the

  1717. end

  1718. and

  1719. he

  1720. is

  1721. risen

  1722. and

  1723. he

  1724. is

  1725. now

  1726. alive

  1727. and

  1728. if

  1732. are

  1733. clear
