  1. Well, good morning. It's good to be here with you.

  2. I don't know about you.

  3. This past week for me has been a particularly challenging one.

  4. Personal disappointments,

  5. the news of others who are suffering in various ways,

  6. not only because of this virus, but exacerbated by this virus

  7. as they face other challenges.

  8. It's just been a harder week.

  9. I've battled to have my hope maintained,

  10. and I've found myself at times struggling to not fall into despair.

  11. I find myself crying like the man who cried out to Jesus.

  12. I believe help my unbelief.

  13. I think that's a common struggle that we may be facing in our world today

  14. and in our lives in general,

  15. and maybe particularly in this most unusual season that we are in.

  16. As we come to the end of the book of Luke,

  17. this is the end of our series,

  18. we come to a situation where the disciples are believing and not believing as well.

  19. We saw last week that Jesus met with some of the disciples

  20. as they were walking away from Jerusalem in despair and discouragement.

  21. And as he met with them, he revealed himself to them,

  22. and he opened their eyes to see that he indeed was risen from the dead.

  23. And so we see in Luke 24, 34,

  24. that he returns,

  25. or that these disciples returned to Jerusalem

  26. to talk to the 12 apostles and the disciples,

  27. and they're all together saying,

  28. the Lord is risen indeed.

  29. So believing, they're rejoicing.

  30. And yet Jesus is not done with them,

  31. and he has more for them.

  32. And this is the passage that we're going to look at this morning.

  33. They believe, and yet they don't believe.

  34. And as he reveals himself to them in that context,

  35. he anchors them in their faith,

  36. and he launches them out into the world

  37. to be witnesses to him as a resurrected Savior.

  38. And my friends, this is the hope,

  39. is that this passage can do the same for us this morning.

  40. So let's look.

  41. We're in Luke chapter 24, starting in verse 36 to the end.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  42. So let's go ahead and read that together,

  43. and then we can pray.

  44. As they were talking about these things,

  45. Jesus himself stood among them

  46. and said to them,

  47. Peace to you.

  48. But they were startled and frightened

  49. and thought they saw a spirit.

  50. And he said to them,

  51. Why are you troubled?

  52. And why do you doubt?

  53. Why do doubts arise in your heart?

  54. See my hands and my feet,

  55. that it is I myself.

  56. Touch me and see,

  57. for spirit does not have flesh and bones,

  58. as you see that I have.

  59. And when he had said this,

  60. he showed them his hands and his feet.

  61. And while they still disbelieved for joy

  62. and were marveling,

  63. he said to them,

  64. Have you anything here to eat?

  65. And they gave him a piece of broiled fish,

  66. and he took it and ate it before them.

  67. Then he said to them,

  68. These are my words,

  69. that I spoke to you while I was still with you,

  70. that everything written about me

  71. in the law of Moses

  72. and the prophets and the Psalms

  73. must be fulfilled.

  74. Then he opened their minds

  75. to understand the Scriptures

  76. and said to them,

  77. Thus it is written,

  78. that the Christ should suffer

  79. and on the third day rise from the dead,

  80. and that repentance and forgiveness of sin

  81. should be proclaimed in his name

  82. to all nations,

  83. beginning from Jerusalem.

  84. You are witnesses of these things.

  85. And behold,

  86. I am sending the promise of my Father upon you,

  87. but stay in the city

  88. until you are clothed with power from on high.

  89. And then he led them out as far as Bethany

  90. and lifting up his hands,

  91. he blessed them.

  92. While he blessed them,

  93. he parted from them

  94. and was carried up into heaven.

  95. And they worshipped him

  96. and returned to Jerusalem with great joy

  97. and were continually in the temple,

  98. blessing God.

  99. Let's pray together.

  100. Lord, even as you helped the disciples so long ago,

  101. we ask today that you would do for us.

  102. Lord, that you would open up our minds

  103. so that we would understand the scriptures.

  104. And Lord, that as you open up our minds

  105. to give us understanding,

  106. Lord, you would strengthen our faith.

  107. Lord, that you would fill our hearts with joy.

  108. And Lord, that we would be moved

  109. to worship and proclaim you

  110. as we understand this passage this morning.

  111. Holy Spirit, I pray for your help,

  112. both for me as I speak

  113. and for all as we listen to your word,

  114. Lord, that you would help us this morning

  115. to believe.

  116. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  117. Amen.

  118. Amen.

  119. Amen.

  120. Amen.

  121. Well, this is the final resurrection appearance

  122. of Jesus in the book of Luke.

  123. And remember, if you aren't aware,

  124. that Luke is actually the first half

  125. of a two-book series.

  126. The book of Acts was Luke's second volume

  127. that continues the work of Christ

  128. through the church,

  129. the proclamation of his name

  130. and the work that he does

  131. in building his church.

  132. But here we see Jesus

  133. at this last section,

  134. anchoring his followers

  135. in a truth that cannot be denied

  136. and launching his followers

  137. into a mission

  138. that will consume their lives.

  139. So let's look at those two things

  140. in order, a truth to be anchored

  141. and then a mission to be launched into.

  142. First, we're going to look at 24, 36 through 47,

  143. a truth to be anchored in.

  144. The truth is that Jesus really did rise from the dead.

  145. And they become eyewitnesses of this

  146. as they see him in his resurrection body.

  147. Now, it's a fascinating story

  148. because we've already seen Jesus appear to people.

  149. He's appeared to Mary.

  150. He's appeared to Clopas.

  151. Peter went and saw the empty tomb.

  152. There are a number of people

  153. who have already have real evidence

  154. of Jesus rising from the dead

  155. and they have all gathered back together

  156. and they're trading these accounts

  157. and they're comparing them.

  158. And it seemed, as we said in verse 34,

  159. that they did believe it.

  160. And yet, Jesus then shows up in their midst

  161. and as is not unexpected

  162. because no one had ever seen someone

  163. be raised from the dead like this before.

  164. They didn't believe it.

  165. Jesus steps into the midst of them

  166. and he knows their response

  167. and so he says, peace be with you.

  168. Don't be afraid.

  169. And yet, they are afraid.

  170. They think they've seen a ghost.

  171. They think they've seen a spirit

  172. because this was all that they could imagine.

  173. If coming back from the dead meant anything,

  174. it meant this,

  175. that you would come back as some kind of spirit

  176. and they were terrified.

  177. And Jesus is so gracious and gentle with them.

  178. Why are you so troubled?

  179. Why do doubts rise in your heart?

  180. Look at me.

  181. See that it is really I.

  182. Look at the way that he says this in verse 39.

  183. See my hands and my feet,

  184. that it is I myself.

  185. He repeats that.

  186. In Greek, it comes out so strongly.

  187. It is really me.

  188. I am the one that is standing before you.

  189. This is not just a vision.

  190. This is not a dream.

  191. It is really me.

  192. You can see.

  193. And not only say you can see me,

  194. but it says touch me.

  195. And touch actually has the sense of being handled.

  196. You can put your hands on me

  197. and know that it is really me.

  198. Because spirits you can't touch,

  199. they don't have flesh and bone the way I do.

  200. And then he said this,

  201. and he showed them,

  202. and he showed them especially,

  203. his hands and his feet.

  204. His hands and his feet with the marks of the crucifixion,

  205. the marks of his death just three days ago,

  206. just recently where he had gained these scars

  207. that would be on his physical body forever,

  208. remembering his death for them.

  209. This is not just a vision of a spirit,

  210. but this is Jesus,

  211. the real one who hung on the cross,

  212. risen again.

  213. It's remarkable.

  214. And they believe,

  215. and yet there's this great phrase in verse 39, right?

  216. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling,

  217. it's kind of like,

  218. I remember when I was in college,

  219. me and my brothers conspired

  220. to travel back to visit my parents

  221. for their 25th anniversary.

  222. They didn't know that anyone was,

  223. no,

  224. one of my brothers had planned to go home

  225. and celebrate with them,

  226. and the rest of us were,

  227. you know,

  228. off living in other parts of the country.

  229. And we managed to surprise them

  230. so that we just drove into the driveway together

  231. and opened the door,

  232. and there we were.

  233. And mom and dad said,

  234. I can't believe you're here,

  235. with joy and marveling.

  236. And I think that's what the disciples are doing here.

  237. Like,

  238. I can't believe you're here.

  239. It's joy,

  240. it's wonder,

  241. it's amazement,

  242. it's still a little doubting.

  243. Like,

  244. is this really true?

  245. Is this really happening?

  246. So Jesus appears to them,

  247. and he's so gracious.

  248. He just casually says,

  249. hey,

  250. do you have any leftovers around?

  251. Can I get something to eat?

  252. And this is not a throwaway.

  253. It's a weird detail,

  254. isn't it?

  255. But it's not a throwaway.

  256. Jesus is intentionally saying,

  257. you can see me,

  258. you can touch me,

  259. now watch.

  260. Spirits don't eat food.

  261. There's no body to put the food in.

  262. It just doesn't happen.

  263. And so he picks up a piece of bread,

  264. and he eats it.

  265. And in doing this,

  266. he's establishing for his disciples,

  267. not just Mary,

  268. not just Clopas,

  269. although how gracious it is

  270. that God started with them,

  271. but now even the twelve,

  272. they are all eyewitnesses to

  273. the living flesh and blood,

  274. risen Jesus Christ.

  275. And having done this then,

  276. he goes on in the next couple of verses

  277. to open their minds

  278. so that they can not only see him,

  279. but so they can understand

  280. what it is

  281. that he is doing.

  282. So they can understand

  283. what it means

  284. for what they're seeing.

  285. Having satisfied their eyes,

  286. now he's going to

  287. help their minds to understand.

  288. And this is the fourth time

  289. in chapter 24 of Luke

  290. that Jesus says again

  291. that the Christ must suffer and die

  292. and then be raised again.

  293. It's the fourth account

  294. where this is the basic storyline

  295. of the life of Jesus,

  296. that he came to suffer and to die

  297. and then to rise again.

  298. And Jesus says,

  299. this is what I've told you

  300. all along.

  301. This is what the Old Testament

  302. is talking about

  303. when he says in verse 44,

  304. the law of Moses

  305. and the prophets and the Psalms.

  306. Those aren't particular books

  307. of the Bible.

  308. He's actually using that

  309. as shorthand

  310. for the whole Old Testament.

  311. The law of Moses

  312. would have been the Pentateuch.

  313. The prophets included

  314. not only the latter prophets,

  315. which we think of like Isaiah

  316. or Jeremiah

  317. and the minor prophets,

  318. but also the former prophets,

  319. what we normally call

  320. the historical books,

  321. which are telling forth

  322. about what's true

  323. about what God did in the world

  324. in establishing the kingdom

  325. of Israel.

  326. And then the Psalms

  327. doesn't just mean

  328. the book of Psalms,

  329. but includes all the wisdom literature.

  330. So Jesus is saying

  331. the whole Old Testament

  332. was talking about me.

  333. Maybe he was thinking

  334. about Leviticus 16

  335. and the sacrifice of atonement

  336. done in the temple.

  337. Maybe he was thinking

  338. about Psalm 22.

  339. My God, my God,

  340. why have you forsaken me?

  341. The cry of hope

  342. and dereliction

  343. at the cross.

  344. Maybe he was thinking

  345. of Exodus 34, 6,

  346. where Jesus reveals,

  347. or when God reveals himself

  348. to Moses,

  349. says,

  350. I am the Lord,

  351. slow to anger

  352. and abounding

  353. and loving kindness

  354. from generation to generation.

  355. Maybe he was talking

  356. about 2 Samuel 7,

  357. where he tells David,

  358. makes a covenant

  359. with King David,

  360. that there will be

  361. a kingdom upon which

  362. one of his descendants

  363. will sit,

  364. which will reign

  365. forever and ever.

  366. and maybe lots more

  367. of the Old Testament.

  368. One commentator says this.

  369. He's talking about

  370. the need for the payment

  371. of sins,

  372. including sacrificial victims,

  373. the pervasive theme

  374. of suffering in the Psalter,

  375. the comprehensive testimony

  376. of the Old Testament

  377. to God's mercy,

  378. love,

  379. and forgiveness

  380. of the penitent,

  381. and the increasing specifications

  382. of the Old Testament

  383. covenants,

  384. culminating in Jeremiah 31,

  385. 31 through 34,

  386. and Ezekiel 36,

  387. 25 through 28.

  388. Both of those last prophecies

  389. talking about

  390. a new covenant

  391. that is to come

  392. when God will come,

  393. make a new covenant

  394. with his people

  395. where he will take the law

  396. and he will write it

  397. in their hearts,

  398. and he will renew

  399. their hearts of stone

  400. and give them a heart of flesh

  401. where the Holy Spirit

  402. will come

  403. and make them born again.

  404. It says,

  405. all of these things

  406. are leading

  407. and pointing to Jesus,

  408. the first one

  409. who was born again

  410. as he was raised

  411. from the dead.

  412. Why is this so important

  413. for Jesus to say this again?

  414. He already did this

  415. with Clopas and his friend

  416. on the way to Emmaus.

  417. He's already done this once.

  418. Why is he doing it again?

  419. Pastor Kent Hughes

  420. former pastor of a church

  421. in Wheaton, Illinois,

  422. said this,

  423. Jesus did not want them

  424. to rest their belief

  425. in his resurrection

  426. on their personal experience alone.

  427. He was not interested

  428. in an elite group

  429. with a special knowledge

  430. or experience of Christ.

  431. Resting their faith

  432. on a miracle

  433. was not sufficient.

  434. He wanted them

  435. to ground their experience

  436. of his resurrection

  437. on the massive testimony

  438. of Scripture.

  439. So their establishment

  440. as eyewitnesses

  441. isn't simply

  442. that they were there

  443. and they could see it,

  444. but now he's opening

  445. their minds

  446. so that they can see

  447. that this book

  448. testifies about Jesus

  449. from start to finish,

  450. and that in that understanding

  451. it is rich

  452. and meaningful

  453. and has cosmic power.

  454. And with this power,

  455. with this understanding,

  456. then comes the call

  457. of proclamation.

  458. Do you see the three things

  459. that Jesus said

  460. in 46?

  461. Thus it is written,

  462. the Christ should suffer

  463. and on the third day rise.

  464. And then verse 47,

  465. and then his message

  466. should be proclaimed

  467. to the ends of the earth.

  468. You see,

  469. because if Jesus

  470. really did rise from the dead,

  471. and if it really is true,

  472. what the Bible says

  473. about the significance

  474. of that,

  475. it changes everything.

  476. This is my own experience.

  477. Having grown up

  478. knowing something

  479. about Christianity,

  480. Christianity,

  481. but not really understanding

  482. Christ and the gospel.

  483. In high school,

  484. I had friends

  485. who believed in Christ,

  486. and they shared with me

  487. by their lives

  488. and by their love

  489. and by their words

  490. more about who Jesus is

  491. and what he did.

  492. In the end,

  493. someone gave me a copy

  494. of Mere Christianity

  495. by C.S. Lewis,

  496. and as I read it,

  497. my mind was opened,

  498. and I became convinced

  499. that Jesus really was

  500. who he said he was

  501. in the Bible.

  502. And if Jesus really was that,

  503. then it changed everything.

  504. It called me to respond.

  505. It called me

  506. to have to make a decision.

  507. Do I believe

  508. and entrust myself

  509. to this Savior

  510. or not?

  511. And if it's true,

  512. then not only

  513. do I have to respond,

  514. but that it's a message

  515. that must be proclaimed

  516. to the ends of the earth.

  517. And so,

  518. we come to the second point.

  519. Not only does Jesus

  520. anchor his followers

  521. in a truth

  522. about his resurrection,

  523. but having anchored him,

  524. then he launches them out

  525. into the world

  526. to proclaim this good news,

  527. to be on a mission

  528. that they are launched into.

  529. And this is a focal point.

  530. You see this in verse 48

  531. and following.

  532. You are witnesses

  533. of these things.

  534. And he's not merely saying

  535. you are passive recipients

  536. of these things.

  537. He's saying witnesses

  538. who must now testify,

  539. witnesses who now must stand

  540. in the court of public opinion

  541. and say,

  542. this is what I have seen

  543. and heard

  544. and know is true.

  545. He says to his disciples,

  546. this is what I have called you to do.

  547. And this is what he says

  548. to his disciples even today.

  549. This is what I have called you to do.

  550. And look,

  551. we need to recognize one thing.

  552. We are not eyewitnesses

  553. in the same way,

  554. are we?

  555. And yet,

  556. Daryl Bach,

  557. one of the commentators

  558. on Luke,

  559. says this,

  560. we are witnesses,

  561. however,

  562. in a different sense

  563. than these original disciples.

  564. They testified

  565. to what they saw,

  566. whereas we bear witness

  567. to their testimony

  568. and to our experience

  569. of the resurrected Jesus.

  570. God's call wasn't simply

  571. for the first group

  572. of people in that room,

  573. men and women,

  574. who saw him

  575. to tell the story

  576. for one generation

  577. and then for it to fade,

  578. but that they would be a model

  579. and that their eyewitness testimony

  580. becomes the basis

  581. upon which we have a testimony

  582. and a witness

  583. for us to share

  584. throughout all generations.

  585. This is what the passage

  586. that Laura read earlier

  587. from 1 John says,

  588. what we have seen,

  589. what we have heard,

  590. what we have touched

  591. with our hands.

  592. This is what we proclaim

  593. and pass along to you

  594. so that you may have

  595. the joy of knowing Christ.

  596. Friends,

  597. this is why this book

  598. is so important

  599. because we are not

  600. without testimony.

  601. We are not without evidence

  602. that this is true.

  603. The whole book of the Bible

  604. and particularly

  605. the New Testament

  606. testifies to the reality

  607. of this

  608. and empowers us

  609. to be witnesses

  610. as well.

  611. What are we empowered

  612. to do as witnesses?

  613. Well, there are a couple of things.

  614. One, being witnesses

  615. means we have something to say.

  616. In verse 47,

  617. it says,

  618. what do we have to say?

  619. We have to talk about repentance

  620. and forgiveness

  621. in the name of Jesus.

  622. Repentance means

  623. that there's a call

  624. to respond

  625. to the truth

  626. of the resurrection.

  627. Repentance is a response

  628. of turning away

  629. from other things,

  630. turning away

  631. from other ways

  632. in which we might try

  633. to become right with God

  634. or to save ourselves

  635. or to make us right

  636. in the universe.

  637. It is turning

  638. from all of those

  639. other things

  640. and turning to Jesus

  641. because he rose

  642. from the dead.

  643. Why?

  644. Because he has achieved

  645. forgiveness of sins

  646. on our behalf.

  647. If repentance

  648. is the response

  649. that we're calling people to,

  650. forgiveness

  651. is the offer

  652. that we're giving to them.

  653. Not because we can do it,

  654. but because Jesus

  655. has already done it.

  656. You see,

  657. the whole story

  658. of the gospel

  659. is that Jesus came

  660. to bear the sin

  661. of human beings,

  662. of you and me,

  663. as we reject

  664. and deny God

  665. on a regular basis

  666. by our unbelief

  667. by our willful independence,

  668. by our self-salvation.

  669. And Jesus came

  670. to die on the cross

  671. for those sins

  672. so that we might not bear

  673. the wrath of God

  674. against those sins,

  675. but rather

  676. that we might receive

  677. forgiveness

  678. because the sins

  679. have been paid for

  680. by Jesus.

  681. And so rather than them

  682. being in our account,

  683. the account has been cleared.

  684. And we are now able

  685. to come to God

  686. in trusting faith.

  687. This is what Jesus

  688. has done for us.

  689. And so repentance

  690. is the call to respond.

  691. Forgiveness is the offer

  692. that's given out

  693. in Jesus' name.

  694. That is on the basis

  695. of what Jesus has done

  696. and who He is.

  697. Jesus,

  698. our substitute

  699. and our Savior.

  700. Jesus,

  701. by His resurrection,

  702. the one who has victory

  703. over sin and death

  704. and is declared

  705. to be vindicated

  706. as the Son of God.

  707. A resurrected Christ

  708. calls the world

  709. to respond.

  710. and in that response

  711. results in a new

  712. relationship with God.

  713. Friends,

  714. I don't know

  715. if you've thought about this.

  716. There are many today

  717. in our world

  718. who think

  719. aren't all religions

  720. the same?

  721. They believe

  722. in a higher power.

  723. They try to make us

  724. better people.

  725. They're hoping,

  726. you know,

  727. ideally to improve

  728. the world.

  729. And sure,

  730. some of those things

  731. are similar

  732. across the board.

  733. But Christianity

  734. is distinct

  735. in this very thing.

  736. It claims

  737. that God

  738. came to earth

  739. and lived

  740. and died

  741. and rose again.

  742. And if He did that,

  743. that is the most

  744. important thing

  745. that we would ever know.

  746. No other religion

  747. teaches that.

  748. This is the thing

  749. that I had to wrestle

  750. with

  751. on my own journey

  752. to faith

  753. and this is what

  754. we all have to wrestle

  755. with

  756. as the world,

  757. as Christ

  758. is proclaimed.

  759. Friends,

  760. I wonder

  761. what do we preach?

  762. And by that,

  763. I don't mean

  764. standing on a street corner

  765. or sitting up here

  766. in a pulpit.

  767. But by our lives,

  768. what do we say?

  769. Jesus is a friend

  770. is a friend

  771. next to you.

  772. Jesus is one

  773. who comes

  774. and helps us

  775. in our troubles.

  776. Jesus will heal

  777. your diseases.

  778. Jesus is going

  779. to bring meaning

  780. and purpose

  781. and richness

  782. to your life.

  783. Friends,

  784. I'll tell you what,

  785. all those things

  786. are true

  787. and they're wonderful

  788. truths about

  789. who Jesus is.

  790. but the core

  791. of the gospel

  792. is that Jesus

  793. came to die

  794. for sinners

  795. like you and me.

  796. And by rising

  797. from the dead,

  798. he achieved

  799. a salvation

  800. for us

  801. whereby we may

  802. have peace

  803. with God,

  804. forgiveness

  805. of sin,

  806. and eternal

  807. life with us.

  808. are we ashamed

  809. to talk about that?

  810. Are we embarrassed

  811. to talk about

  812. a resurrected Savior?

  813. Are we convinced

  814. in our own mind

  815. that it really

  816. did happen?

  817. Can we explain

  818. its significance?

  819. Friends,

  820. it's good for us

  821. to know

  822. and to grow

  823. in our understanding

  824. and our ability

  825. to explain it

  826. to others.

  827. I want to point

  828. you to a few

  829. resources.

  830. We're going to

  831. put them up

  832. on the stream

  833. in the chat.

  834. They'll also be

  835. on our website.

  836. One of the great

  837. resources out there

  838. is actually one

  839. of our elders,

  840. James Choi,

  841. on his faculty page

  842. in the School

  843. of Management

  844. at Yale.

  845. James Choi,

  846. you can look it up,

  847. Google his name.

  848. He has a great

  849. thing called

  850. Why I Am a Christian

  851. and it is a page

  852. worth looking at.

  853. There are some

  854. other resources

  855. out there

  856. that I think

  857. are wonderful

  858. resources for you

  859. to become established

  860. and convinced

  861. about the resurrection

  862. and understanding

  863. of it.

  864. William Lane Craig

  865. wrote a book

  866. called The Sun

  867. Rises.

  868. There's also

  869. a great book

  870. out there.

  871. It's edited

  872. by a guy named

  873. David Baggett

  874. but it's called

  875. Did the Resurrection

  876. Happen?

  877. And it's a conversation

  878. and actually

  879. an ongoing conversation

  880. between Gary Habermas

  881. and Anthony Flew.

  882. Anthony Flew

  883. was an atheist

  884. and Gary Habermas

  885. was a Christian

  886. and they debated

  887. the evidence

  888. for the resurrection

  889. but this book

  890. is 20 years later

  891. talking about

  892. the evolution

  893. of their conversation

  894. and involving

  895. some other people

  896. in the conversation

  897. to talk about it.

  898. It's a wonderful exchange.

  899. And for those of you

  900. who are scholars,

  901. N.T. Wright,

  902. the resurrection

  903. and the Son of God

  904. is an overwhelmingly

  905. convincing narrative

  906. testifying to the truth

  907. of the resurrection

  908. of Jesus Christ.

  909. And if you're out there,

  910. if you're in seminary

  911. or if you're in divinity school

  912. or if you're in

  913. religious studies classes

  914. and you're wrestling

  915. with this

  916. at a whole other level,

  917. this is the book

  918. for you to go to.

  919. It's about 700 pages.

  920. It's not easy.

  921. I'm not going to lie.

  922. But it's a wonderful resource

  923. for you to be convinced,

  924. for you to know

  925. these things.

  926. Friends,

  927. these are ways

  928. that you can be equipped

  929. to be convinced of

  930. and understand

  931. why we believe

  932. the resurrection.

  933. but I'll tell you what,

  934. you don't have to know

  935. all those things

  936. to be able to bear witness.

  937. You don't have to be

  938. a New Testament scholar.

  939. You do need to know

  940. His Word

  941. to know how it is an account

  942. of Jesus raised from the dead

  943. and to be willing

  944. to stand up and say,

  945. this is what we know.

  946. This is what we know.

  947. And if this is true,

  948. it changes everything.

  949. So witnesses have something

  950. to share,

  951. don't they?

  952. But they also have

  953. a world to tell.

  954. Jesus goes on

  955. in verse 47

  956. and He says,

  957. repentance and forgiveness

  958. of sin

  959. should be proclaimed

  960. in His name

  961. to all nations

  962. beginning

  963. in Jerusalem.

  964. And this is an amazing thing,

  965. right?

  966. Because Jerusalem

  967. has been the terminal point

  968. of Jesus' life

  969. and ministry.

  970. He ends up there

  971. to accomplish

  972. His work of salvation

  973. by dying and rising

  974. from the dead.

  975. But now Jerusalem,

  976. according to Jesus,

  977. is the launching point.

  978. It is the place

  979. from where

  980. this sound

  981. is going to go out

  982. to the ends

  983. of the earth

  984. to all people.

  985. And of course,

  986. this has always been

  987. God's plan.

  988. This was not a new thought

  989. like,

  990. hey,

  991. we've got a great product.

  992. Let's see how many people

  993. we can sell it to.

  994. This has always been

  995. God's plan.

  996. Going all the way back

  997. to Genesis 12,

  998. God comes to Abraham

  999. and He says,

  1000. I am calling you

  1001. to trust in Me

  1002. and to follow Me

1003. and I will make you

1004. a father of great nations

1005. and I will bless you

1006. and I will make you

  1007. a blessing

  1008. to all peoples

  1009. of the earth.

  1010. in the very beginning

  1011. of God establishing

  1012. His redemptive work,

  1013. He said,

  1014. the goal of this

1015. is that the whole world

  1016. would be blessed.

  1017. And we see it

  1018. throughout Scripture.

  1019. Isaiah 49,

    Isaiah 49:6

  1020. verse 6 says,

1021. it is too light a thing

  1022. that you should be

  1023. my servant

  1024. to raise up

  1025. the tribes of Jacob

  1026. to bring back

  1027. the preserved of Israel.

  1028. I will make you

1029. a light to the nations

  1030. that my salvation

  1031. may reach

  1032. the ends

  1033. of the earth.

  1034. Or Psalm 22, 27,

  1035. all the ends

  1036. of the earth

  1037. shall remember

1038. and turn to the Lord

  1039. and all the families

  1040. and the nations

  1041. of the nations

  1042. shall worship before you.

  1043. And friends,

  1044. this doesn't seem

  1045. new to us,

1046. but in the first century

  1047. where Jesus,

  1048. as a Jew,

  1049. coming among Jews

  1050. primarily,

  1051. initially,

  1052. this was momentous.

1053. Now Luke has given us

1054. hints all the way along

  1055. where Roman centurions

  1056. and Syrophoenician women

1057. and all sorts of people

  1058. are being brought in

  1059. from the outside.

  1060. But Jesus,

  1061. risen from the dead,

  1062. I have not come

  1063. just for the Jews,

  1064. but for the Greeks,

  1065. for the Ethiopians

  1066. and the Arabs

  1067. and the Persians

  1068. and all the peoples

  1069. around in their world.

  1070. and now we know

1071. that he meant as well

  1072. the Laotians

  1073. and the French

  1074. and the Aleutians

  1075. and the Quechua

  1076. and the Russians

  1077. and the Maasai

1078. and people from every continent,

  1079. from every people group,

  1080. from every tribe

  1081. and language and tongue.

  1082. And we know this

  1083. because in Revelation

  1084. there's a picture of God

  1085. gathering people

  1086. from every tribe

  1087. and tongue and nation

  1088. around the throne

  1089. worshiping Jesus.

  1090. Friends,

  1091. if you've ever wondered

  1092. whether Christianity

  1093. is an exclusive religion,

  1094. whether it is inaccessible,

1095. whether it is only for

1096. a certain group of people,

1097. here we see so clearly

  1098. it is not.

  1099. God has opened wide

1100. the doors of his banquet hall

  1101. to the world

  1102. and he has said

1103. by the proclamation of Jesus

1104. to the end of the world,

  1105. he is inviting everyone

  1106. to come in.

  1107. Come and take part

  1108. in his salvation banquet.

1109. Turn from the fruitless meals

  1110. of your own life

1111. and feast here in Jesus.

  1112. Believe in him.

  1113. He's not just

1114. the savior of a tribe,

  1115. but he's the savior

  1116. of the whole world.

  1117. Friends,

  1118. we here at Trinity

  1119. have a great opportunity

  1120. because we live

  1121. in a wonderful city

  1122. that is a crossroads.

  1123. Did you know

1124. that over 16% of people

1125. who live in New Haven

1126. were not born in America?

  1127. It's really interesting,

  1128. isn't it?

  1129. Yeah.

  1130. It's a high percentage,

  1131. far higher

  1132. than the national average.

  1133. Because we have universities

  1134. that are world-renowned,

1135. because we are a sanctuary city

  1136. for refugees,

  1137. we have people

1138. from all over the world

  1139. who are our neighbors

  1140. and our friends

  1141. and our co-workers.

  1142. What an opportunity

  1143. we have

  1144. to bear witness

  1145. to Jesus

1146. to the ends of the earth

  1147. right here.

1148. But I also want you

  1149. to know

  1150. that the elders

  1151. at Trinity

  1152. pray regularly

  1153. that we would not

  1154. merely be a place,

1155. a church that witnesses here,

  1156. though we want

  1157. to do that well.

  1158. But we pray

  1159. that some of us

  1160. from our midst

  1161. would hear the call

  1162. to go to places

  1163. like Jonathan and Natalie,

  1164. go to places

1165. where Christ is not known,

  1166. go to places

  1167. where people

  1168. have not heard

  1169. about a resurrected Savior,

1170. that they would be willing

  1171. to spend their lives

  1172. doing this.

  1173. We pray that Trinity

  1174. would be a church

  1175. that launches people

  1176. into the world

  1177. ready to be witnesses

  1178. for them.

  1179. So what about you?

  1180. Are you ready

  1181. to be a witness?

  1182. Whether near or far,

  1183. are you ready

  1184. to stand

  1185. and tell the story

  1186. of Jesus

  1187. who came

  1188. and lived

  1189. and died

  1190. and rose again

  1191. for our salvation?

  1192. Feels pretty daunting,

  1193. I'll bet,

  1194. to many of you,

1195. as it does to me

  1196. often.

  1197. The good news

  1198. is that Jesus

1199. knows how hard it is.

1200. And so at the very end

  1201. of this passage

  1202. we see two things

1203. that give us great hope.

  1204. One,

  1205. in verse 49,

1206. he gives us a promise

  1207. that we don't have

  1208. to do this alone.

  1209. Luke says it

  1210. very briefly.

  1211. He'll expand on this

1212. in the book of Acts

  1213. hugely.

1214. That he is going away

  1215. to the Father

  1216. so that the Father

1217. can send the Holy Spirit

  1218. down on his disciples

  1219. to empower them

  1220. and fill them

  1221. with confidence

  1222. and joy

  1223. in the resurrected Christ

  1224. and to loosen

  1225. their tongues

  1226. to proclaim him.

1227. And so he tells them,

  1228. go to Jerusalem

  1229. and wait

  1230. because this is

  1231. the next move.

1232. I'm going to pour out

  1233. my Spirit

  1234. and I'm going to

  1235. empower you

  1236. for this mission

1237. that I've called you to.

  1238. And then finally,

  1239. look at the way

  1240. that these disciples

  1241. end their days.

  1242. He led them out

  1243. as far as Bethany

  1244. and they lift him

  1245. and he blessed them

  1246. and he goes up

  1247. to heaven.

  1248. And again,

1249. this is a very brief

1250. account of what we see

  1251. more expanded

  1252. at the beginning

1253. of the book of Acts

  1254. where Jesus bodily

  1255. raises up,

  1256. right,

  1257. so that he's

  1258. with the Father

  1259. sending the Spirit

  1260. with the promise

1261. that he will come again.

1262. And the effect of this

1263. is that when he had

  1264. parted from them

  1265. and was carried up

  1266. to heaven,

  1267. what did they do?

  1268. They didn't say,

  1269. huh,

  1270. that was weird

  1271. and go home.

  1272. It's what I might have done.

  1273. Instead,

  1274. they go back

  1275. to Jerusalem

  1276. as he told them

  1277. and they worshipped

  1278. in the temple.

  1279. And remember,

  1280. the temple

  1281. was the very place

  1282. where four days ago

1283. the leaders of the temple

  1284. had crucified Jesus

  1285. and they're going

  1286. right back

  1287. to that place

  1288. to worship God

  1289. with great joy

  1290. anticipating

  1291. God's helping power

  1292. coming upon them

  1293. so that they will

  1294. live out this calling.

  1295. if at the beginning

  1296. of this passage

  1297. they were still

  1298. where I am often,

  1299. I believe,

  1300. Lord,

  1301. help my unbelief.

1302. At the end of this passage,

  1303. they are worshipping

  1304. courageously

  1305. in the face

  1306. of their enemies

  1307. with joy

  1308. because they have seen

  1309. and know

  1310. that Jesus

1311. is risen from the dead.

1312. May that be ours as well.

  1313. Let's pray.

  1314. Lord,

  1315. we thank you

  1316. for this passage.

  1317. We thank you

  1318. for

  1319. the way

  1320. that it comforts us,

  1321. the way

  1322. that it challenges us,

  1323. and the way

  1324. that it calls us.

  1325. Lord,

  1326. I pray for those

  1327. this morning

  1328. who may be

  1329. wrestling with

  1330. the truth

  1331. of the resurrection.

  1332. Lord,

  1333. will you

  1334. come alongside

  1335. of them

  1336. and equip them

  1337. and help them

  1338. to know

  1339. and to understand

  1340. this truth.

  1341. Lord,

1342. I pray for all of us

  1343. that we would

  1344. be strengthened

  1345. in our faith,

  1346. filled with joy,

  1347. and that our tongues

  1348. would be loosened

  1349. to bear witness

  1350. that Christ is risen.

  1351. He is risen indeed.

  1352. Lord,

  1353. Lord,

  1354. that we would do

  1355. this here

  1356. in New Haven

1357. and in the New Haven

  1358. area

  1359. and to the ends

  1360. of the earth.

  1361. We pray this

  1362. in Jesus' name.

  1363. Amen.
