  1. Good morning, church. It's good to be with you this morning. It's nice to see the sunshine.

  2. I hope you've enjoyed some of the beautiful weather this weekend.

  3. We're going to continue this morning in our series in the book of James.

  4. I'm going to pray before we start, so will you pray with me as we look to God's word together?

  5. Lord, we thank you this morning for the opportunity to gather virtually.

  6. We thank you that by your grace, Lord, we are able to together hear your word this morning.

  7. And I pray that your spirit would be at work in us, that we would be those who sit under it.

  8. And Lord, that you would teach our hearts.

  9. Lord, that you would bend our wills.

  10. Lord, that you would renew our souls.

  11. Lord, I pray that you would give me words this morning.

  12. Lord, that you would help me.

  13. Lord, that I might proclaim your word clearly, faithfully.

  14. Lord, that you might use these words in all of our lives, we pray in Jesus' name.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. I can remember it was my sophomore year in high school, spring.

  18. I played high school lacrosse.

  19. Our season was already not going well midway through.

  20. We were not going to make it to the playoffs.

  21. And yet, our defensive coach, Graham Standish, pushed us every day in practice.

  22. If you've ever played lacrosse, you know what a ground ball drill is.

  23. It's kind of like a fumble drill in football, except you have two guys with six-foot sticks

  24. trying to pick up a ball while the other person is beating on them with said stick.

  25. And so, it's quite a challenge.

  26. And we would do this over and over and over again.

  27. We had to go get the ball.

  28. He would chuck it down the field 30 or 40 yards.

  29. We had to sprint down, get the ball, pick it up, and get it back to him.

  30. And we would do this over and over again.

  31. And as the spring got warmer and the practices got longer, and as the playoffs faded, it became

  32. a great trial.

  33. And he was unyielding, pushing us daily, seemingly unaware or uncaring of the trial that we were

  34. facing.

  35. We weren't going to win the title that year.

  36. What was the point?

  37. And as we went on, I began to doubt Graham Standish.

  38. Did he just enjoy torturing us?

  39. Was this punishment for not doing well this year?

  40. Or was this just a big ego trip for him?

  41. And we were the pawns upon which he was building his reputation.

  42. In the midst of that trial, I doubted his goodness and his intentions for us.

  43. And I wonder if we do the same thing in the midst of trials with God as well.

  44. It can be easy at times as we face various trials to think that God is unyielding.

  45. We wonder, is he punishing us?

  46. Is he ignoring us?

  47. Does he care?

  48. Is he good?

  49. It is to some of these questions that the book of James speaks to us this morning.

  50. We're in James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  51. If you want to turn there in your Bible at home or on your app, however you're reading

  52. along with us this morning.

  53. James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  54. We're going to start in verse 12 and read through verse 18.

  55. So let's read together.

  56. James 1 verse 12.

    James 1:12

  57. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial.

  58. For when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to

  59. those who love him.

  60. Let no one say when he is tempted, I'm being tempted by God.

  61. For God cannot tempt with evil, cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.

  62. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

  63. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin.

  64. And sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.

  65. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers and sisters.

  66. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights,

  67. with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

  68. Of his own will, he brought us forth by the word of truth that we should be a kind of first

  69. fruits of his creatures.

  70. As James is writing this letter to the church dispersed throughout the Middle East,

  71. as he's writing to encourage them to be steadfast in trials,

  72. today we see that in the face of trials, he gives us a promise, a problem, and a provision from God

  73. as we walk through trials together.

  74. A promise, a problem, and a provision from God.

  75. So let's look at these three things in order.

  76. First, in verse 12, we see the promise from God.

  77. The promise is that there is a crown of life that God will give to those who are steadfast in the face of trials,

  78. steadfast in loving God.

  79. Now, this imagery of a crown of life, a crown would have been probably not a heavy metal thing

  80. that maybe we think of from European history, but it would have been back from the original Olympics,

  81. it would have been a wreath, most likely.

  82. And it would have been a living wreath made of vines or of ivy or something like that.

  83. And it would be given for those who win the race.

  84. Now, for James, winning the race is not coming in first, but winning the race is finishing it to the end.

  85. It is remaining steadfast in our love here.

  86. And for those who are able to stand fast in loving God,

  87. then God comes and, like the emperor would come in the ceremony,

  88. at the end of life, for eternity, God will come,

  89. and like the emperor, he will bestow upon those who are steadfast this crown.

  90. And this crown is characterized by life, life from God, life that extends for all eternity.

  91. Life that comes from being with him, the author of life.

  92. And we are the ones who, not creating this life, but who receive this from God as a gift,

  93. as a blessing, as a sign of God's favor.

  94. And so, blessed are those who stand fast in trials.

  95. And friends, we need to remember that the Bible tells us that standing fast in the midst of trial

  96. does not mean that we will have success.

  97. We think of the book of Hebrews, chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  98. where it tells of great stories of people who, by faith, saw God do amazing things to provide for them.

  99. And yet, at the end of that chapter, if you remember,

  100. but there were others who, with the same faith, trusted God.

  101. And rather than seeing God's work in their lives,

  102. they suffered great trials and did not see the salvation in this life.

  103. They did not see the success in this life.

  104. And yet, there is a future hope,

  105. an eternal hope that James is pointing us to here.

  106. That is for all,

  107. for all of us who are steadfast in our faith in loving God.

  108. So, there is hope that the end of the race,

  109. at the end of the race, there is something worth hanging in there for.

  110. I wonder whether you've lost sight of this.

  111. I know sometimes I do.

  112. Times I'm overwhelmed by the moment.

  113. Sometimes the pain of the trial feels beyond my capacity to bear.

  114. Sometimes I just am afraid that I'm going to fail.

  115. And I feel like I lack the ability to endure.

  116. And sometimes I just lose sight of it.

  117. I lose sight of the prize.

  118. I lose sight of where we're going in the midst of all the stuff that's right in front of me.

  119. I can't see the crown of life that God has promised me.

  120. So, James reminds us this morning that blessed are those who,

  121. with steadfastness, continue on in loving God

  122. because there is a crown of life for us.

  123. Why is it so hard to stand firm with such a good prize waiting for us?

  124. Well, this is what James addresses in the next couple of verses

  125. because he says we have a problem in that perseverance, don't we?

  126. We have a heart problem.

  127. Look with me in verses 13 through 15.

  128. The problem is that our hearts doubt God's intentions

  129. and His goodness in the midst of our trials.

  130. See, James is a wise pastor and he knows that he set before us this great hope.

  131. Run the race.

  132. Blessed are those who stand firm because there's something at the end.

  133. But we all know that when things get really hard,

  134. our human hearts, our first desire is to look outward

  135. to blame someone else for it.

  136. The devil made to do it.

  137. It wasn't me.

  138. It was the drink.

  139. Or you made me do this.

  140. You were the one who made me sin, fail, stop loving God, continuing to be.

  141. James looks deeper and he says that this impulse to want to blame others

  142. for a Christian is particularly acute

  143. because we know that God is sovereign in all things.

  144. And so when we look externally at these circumstances

  145. and we know that God is sovereign over all of them,

  146. then our hearts turn to this.

  147. You are tempting me, God.

  148. You are the one pushing me to failure and to sin.

  149. We want to blame him and accuse him for our responses.

  150. We doubt his good intentions and we look for a way to pass the buck to him.

  151. But as verse 16 reminds us, we have to think rightly about these things.

  152. We have to think rightly about both God and ourselves in this trial.

  153. James does this as we walk through this passage.

  154. First, James clearly says,

  155. God is not the source of our temptation,

  156. though he may give us trials.

  157. And it's important to know that in the first century rear,

  158. if you were reading this,

  159. you would recognize that the word for trials,

  160. that's both in verse 2 and in verse 12,

  161. has the same root as the word that's translated temptations

  162. in your translation here in verse 13.

  163. So it's going to sound like,

  164. it's going to look like it's maybe the same word.

  165. But what James is doing is drawing on the richness of this word

  166. to distinguish between a trial,

  167. which is something external,

  168. and a temptation, which is internal.

  169. Because we know from the Bible that God does test his people.

  170. That God does give trials.

  171. Think about Genesis 22.

  172. God comes to Abraham,

  173. and having provided with Abraham a son

  174. who is the fulfillment of a promise

  175. that he will be the father of many nations,

  176. he then says,

  177. Abraham, I want you to come and offer up this son.

  178. And Genesis 22 says,

  179. God did this to test Abraham.

  180. Or we read in Deuteronomy chapter 8,

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  181. as God is recounting his faithfulness

  182. to his people in the wilderness,

  183. he said,

  184. I put you into the wilderness to test you,

  185. to see what was in your hearts.

  186. God puts us at times through trials,

  187. but his intention is always

  188. that we would steadfastly persevere,

  189. and that we would succeed.

  190. Look back in verses 2 through 4.

  191. God gives us trials so that we might grow in character,

  192. so that it might produce good in us,

  193. so that we might know more about his faithfulness,

  194. and his power,

  195. and his strength.

  196. God's intentions are always good.

  197. He does not tempt us to sin.

  198. One commentator puts it this way,

  199. what must be understood is that temptation

  200. is an impulse towards sin,

  201. and since God is not susceptible

  202. to any such desire for evil,

  203. he cannot be seen as desiring

  204. that it be brought about in man.

  205. This is contrary to his very character,

  206. that God would lead people into sin.

  207. And so,

  208. though he may create

  209. and sovereignly oversee

  210. our external circumstances,

  211. the power of temptation

  212. comes from somewhere else.

  213. And this is what James goes on to say

  214. in verses 14 and 15.

  215. The temptation comes from within.

  216. It comes from our own hearts,

  217. our own desires.

  218. Look with me in verse 14.

  219. Each person is tempted

  220. when he is lured and enticed

  221. by his own desire.

  222. Now look,

  223. we need to be careful here.

  224. Not all desires are good.

  225. We are meant to desire God.

  226. We have the capacity

  227. to desire good things,

  228. but the word here,

  229. and often in the Bible,

  230. when it talks about our desires,

  231. it's laying bare our sinful desires,

  232. our desires for things

  233. that are outside of God.

  234. And to think more carefully about this,

  235. we need to recognize

  236. that the pull of temptation

  237. is not the same thing

  238. as being captured by temptation.

  239. And so,

  240. Martin Luther has this famous quote.

  241. He says,

  242. you can't keep the birds

  243. from flying over your head,

  244. but you can keep them

  245. from nesting in your hair.

  246. We may see things

  247. that will flit in front of our faces

  248. that we think,

  249. oh,

  250. I'm tempted to sin

  251. in response to that.

  252. But if we let it fly by,

  253. if we resist that temptation

  254. and it goes by,

  255. we have not sinned.

  256. We have actually withstood

  257. the temptation.

  258. But we know that in our hearts,

  259. the pull to sin

  260. is met with a desire.

  261. We desire things apart from God

  262. that will be our salvation.

  263. Things that give us ultimate satisfaction.

  264. Things that we think

  265. will give us fulfillment

  266. or comfort.

  267. Friends,

  268. think back over the last 10 weeks

  269. as we've been walking

  270. through this pandemic

  271. and the trials that it's been.

  272. Where has your heart turned?

  273. And look,

  274. it can turn

  275. not to evil things,

  276. but to good things

  277. in bad ways.

  278. Maybe you've had

  279. a couple too many

  280. Oreo packages

  281. on a bad day.

  282. Or maybe your binging of Netflix

  283. has gone beyond

  284. what maybe is healthy for you.

  285. And some of us

  286. are battling

  287. turning to real evil

  288. that enslaves us.

  289. Addictions

  290. that maybe we have overcome

  291. are lurking again

  292. to capture us again.

  293. Whether it be pornography

  294. or alcohol

  295. or substance abuse

  296. or other ways

  297. in which we seek to

  298. find life

  299. in things

  300. apart from God.

  301. things that we treat

  302. as God substitutes.

  303. And when we take

  304. these things

  305. and not only do we

  306. fight against them

  307. and even sometimes fail,

  308. but when we cherish them,

  309. when we coddle them,

  310. when we excuse them,

  311. and when we keep them

  312. rather than

  313. taking them

  314. and giving them back to God

  315. and saying,

  316. God, help me.

  317. when we abandon faith

  318. in God's goodness

  319. and in His provision

  320. for us

  321. and reach out

  322. for these things instead,

  323. then,

  324. like in verse 14,

  325. we are like the trout

  326. in the stream

  327. and we see

  328. the big fat worm

  329. float by

  330. or we see

  331. the well-tied fly

  332. traipsing on the top

  333. of the water

  334. and we strike.

  335. And when we strike

  336. at that thing

  337. with our desire,

  338. it hooks us

  339. and it drags us away

  340. into sin.

  341. And then,

  342. James,

  343. his image changes

  344. from fishing

  345. to childbirth.

  346. He then says

  347. that there is

  348. this inevitable process

  349. just as

  350. in a human body

  351. conception leads

  352. to the growth

  353. of an embryo

  354. which in time

  355. produces a baby

  356. that then grows

  357. to a mature person.

  358. So also,

  359. when we allow desires

  360. to implant themselves

  361. in our will,

  362. we engage

  363. in a natural process

  364. that will lead us

  365. to sin

  366. and it gives birth

  367. to sin

  368. and the final result,

  369. the maturity of sin,

  370. if you will,

  371. is death.

  372. Spiritual death.

  373. Eternal death.

  374. Distance.

  375. Separation from God

  376. because we have

  377. turned our back

  378. on Him

  379. and turned

  380. to these things

  381. instead.

  382. dead.

  383. So when we're

  384. facing trials

  385. and we feel

  386. the pull of temptation,

  387. we need to take

  388. responsibility

  389. for the fact that

  390. our,

  391. the pull

  392. and the power

  393. of that temptation

  394. and the result

  395. of it,

  396. if we give into it,

  397. is our own

  398. responsibility

  399. for which we are

  400. ansible to God

  401. for.

  402. Now,

  403. look,

  404. friends,

  405. there is a proper

  406. place for us

  407. to

  408. lament

  409. and cry out

  410. to God

  411. when we don't

  412. understand what

  413. He's doing

  414. and when it's

  415. really hard.

  416. But we must not

  417. allow our hearts,

  418. as James says here,

  419. to turn from that

  420. lamenting

  421. and crying out

  422. to Him

  423. to turn into

  424. a heart

  425. of accusation

  426. and doubt

  427. and bitterness.

  428. This is where

  429. James goes

  430. in the last

  431. couple of verses

  432. of our passage

  433. today.

  434. If in trials

  435. our hearts

  436. are so prone

  437. to doubt

  438. and blame God

  439. and pursue

  440. our sinful desires,

  441. where is there

  442. hope for us?

  443. And verse 16

  444. through 18

  445. gives us

  446. the provision,

  447. the provision

  448. that God's goodness

  449. is sure

  450. and certain

  451. to deliver us

  452. from such doubt

  453. because He

  454. has given us

  455. new life

  456. in His Word.

  457. Rather than

  458. thinking that God

  459. is tempting us

  460. towards sin,

  461. we ought to think

  462. of Him

  463. as it says

  464. in verse 17,

  465. God is altogether

  466. good

  467. and He is

  468. unchanging

  469. in His goodness

  470. to His people.

  471. God is like

  472. the sun.

  473. The sun cannot

  474. cast a shadow

  475. because it is

  476. the source

  477. of all light.

  478. So there is

  479. no shadow

  480. and the sun,

  481. although now we know

  482. that cosmologically

  483. there would be

  484. some variation,

  485. for all of human

  486. existence,

  487. our sun has not

  488. changed and will

  489. not change

  490. and so we know

  491. that the sun

  492. is an image

  493. of this unchanging

  494. reality

  495. that rules

  496. over all

  497. of the world

  498. and brings life

  499. to all

  500. who receive

  501. its blessing

  502. of light.

  503. And James says

  504. this is what

  505. all of the images

  506. in verse 17

  507. mean.

  508. every good

  509. and perfect

  510. gift comes

  511. from God

  512. above,

  513. the Father

  514. of lights

  515. who is

  516. unchanging

  517. and who is

  518. without shadow

  519. in His goodness.

  520. When trials

  521. arouse,

  522. doubt in our

  523. hearts

  524. about God's

  525. goodness,

  526. God

  527. stands firm

  528. and says

  529. no,

  530. I am good.

  531. And then James

  532. says,

  533. and if you doubt

  534. that,

  535. because if the

  536. circumstances

  537. around you

  538. look too hard,

  539. verse 18 then,

  540. this is where

  541. we can look

  542. to know

  543. how to walk

  544. through this.

  545. Verse 18,

  546. of His own

  547. will He

  548. brought us

  549. forth by the

  550. word of truth.

  551. God initiated

  552. with us,

  553. God came

  554. and pursued

  555. us

  556. so that we

  557. might choose

  558. Him in faith.

  559. Now I don't

  560. know about you,

  561. but I know

  562. that when I

  563. came to faith

  564. in Christ,

  565. I thought I

  566. was choosing

  567. God.

  568. I thought I

  569. was deciding

  570. to believe

  571. in Him

  572. and to put

  573. Him in the

  574. center of

  575. my life.

  576. And at one

  577. level that

  578. was very

  579. true.

  580. But as

  581. the great

  582. Bible

  583. commentator

  584. Alec

  585. Maudier

  586. says in

  587. his,

  588. we learn

  589. that behind

  590. our choice,

  591. making it

  592. possible and

  593. making it

  594. real,

  595. is the

  596. wonder that

  597. He first

  598. chose us.

  599. God

  600. initiated

  601. and pursued

  602. and wooed

  603. us with

  604. the message

  605. of the

  606. gospel.

  607. And He

  608. took the

  609. message of

  610. the gospel

  611. and He

  612. implanted it

  613. in our

  614. souls.

  615. And from

  616. that,

  617. this gospel

  618. word of

  619. truth,

  620. He then

  621. brought forth

  622. a new

  623. life.

  624. And just

  625. as in

  626. verse 14

  627. and 15

  628. talks about

  629. how our

  630. desires

  631. implant

  632. something that

  633. leads to

  634. sin and

  635. death,

  636. but that

  637. that is in

  638. our souls,

  639. what God

  640. brings to

  641. us is a

  642. different thing.

  643. The word

  644. of truth

  645. implanted in

  646. our lives

  647. that then

  648. brings us

  649. new and

  650. eternal life

  651. with Him.

  652. And not

  653. only eternal

  654. life with

  655. Him,

  656. but that we

  657. might be a

  658. part of His

  659. eternal family,

  660. the first

  661. fruits of

  662. His

  663. creation.

  664. Friends,

  665. this is the

  666. good news,

  667. is that as

  668. we are held

  669. forth this

  670. crown before

  671. us,

  672. this crown

  673. of life,

  674. God does

  675. not require

  676. that we

  677. be good

  678. enough to

  679. save ourselves

  680. or that we

  681. be strong

  682. enough to

  683. stay steadfast

  684. and endure

  685. on our own

  686. power.

  687. That would

  688. be a terrible

  689. tease if God

  690. asked us to

  691. do that.

  692. But God

  693. instead has

  694. come to us,

  695. initiated with

  696. us,

  697. worked in

  698. us who

  699. believe in

  700. Christ,

  701. He has

  702. given us

  703. a new

  704. life,

  705. a life

  706. without which

  707. we won't

  708. make it on

  709. our own.

  710. Our hearts

  711. won't allow

  712. us.

  713. But because

  714. we know that

  715. Jesus came to

  716. earth,

  717. was tested

  718. and tried

  719. as we are,

  720. and then died

  721. on the cross

  722. for our sins,

  723. that Jesus

  724. was raised

  725. to new life

  726. so that

  727. all who

  728. are joined

  729. to Him

  730. experience

  731. this new

  732. life,

  733. a spiritual

  734. life now,

  735. and an

  736. eternal life

  737. with God.

  738. This, then,

  739. is the great

  740. hope that we

  741. have.

  742. This is how

  743. we know that

  744. God is good,

  745. and this is the

  746. power that we

  747. find to be

  748. steadfast in

  749. the midst of

  750. trials.

  751. we throw

  752. our helpless

  753. selves on

  754. God's goodness

  755. to us in

  756. this.

  757. Friends, do you

  758. doubt that God

  759. is good?

  760. Do you wonder

  761. if in this

  762. season of

  763. pandemic,

  764. He is tempting

  765. you to turn?

  766. Turn from

  767. Him to sin?

  768. Turn from

  769. Him to

  770. indulge your

  771. sinful desires?

  772. Have you

  773. begun to doubt

  774. His goodness

  775. and to

  776. accuse or to

  777. blame Him

  778. for your

  779. faults,

  780. for your

  781. failures?

  782. The good

  783. news of the

  784. gospel,

  785. the mercy of

  786. God,

  787. calls us

  788. to stand

  789. fast in

  790. believing in

  791. His goodness.

  792. And the

  793. eternal salvation

  794. that we have

  795. in Christ

  796. stands as a

  797. monument,

  798. like an

  799. unchanging

  800. pillar of

  801. truth,

  802. that God

  803. is good,

  804. and that

  805. He is

  806. worth

  807. trusting.

  808. Rather than

  809. trusting in

  810. our own

  811. hearts,

  812. let us find

  813. in Jesus

  814. the unchanging

  815. reason to

  816. love Him

  817. forever.

  818. And in

  819. Him, we

  820. will find the

  821. power to

  822. remain steadfast

  823. and to

  824. endure to

  825. the end

  826. and gain

  827. that crown of

  828. life that's

  829. promised for

  830. us.

  831. let's pray.

  832. Lord, we

  833. confess our

  834. weakness to

  835. You.

  836. How easily

  837. we doubt

  838. Your goodness,

  839. how quickly we

  840. turn from You

  841. to ourselves.

  842. us.

  843. Lord, how we

  844. trust our

  845. hearts rather

  846. than trusting

  847. in Your

  848. Word.

  849. Lord, how

  850. often we

  851. allow our

  852. desires to

  853. rule us.

  854. But God, we

  855. thank You that

  856. in Your mercy

  857. and grace,

  858. Lord, that in

  859. Christ there is a

  860. salvation and a

  861. life that is not

  862. from us but is

  863. from You.

  864. And Lord, that in

  865. that we will find

  866. great comfort and

  867. hope.

  868. we will find

  869. the strength to

  870. endure and

  871. hold on to Your

  872. goodness, to be

  873. steadfast in trial

  874. and loving You.

  875. Lord, as we look

  876. forward to this

  877. crown of life that

  878. we anticipate, may

  879. You help us today

  880. to take hold of

  881. these things.

  882. In Jesus' name,

  883. Amen.
