  1. Well, good morning, church. Turn with me, if you have a Bible, to the book of James.

  2. We're continuing in our series this summer, which we've entitled Steadfast in this very practical, down-to-earth book of the New Testament.

  3. This morning we're reading James chapter 3, verses 1 to 12. So let me read these verses for us.

    James 3:1–12

  4. James chapter 3, beginning at verse 1.

    James 3 chapter mention

  5. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

  6. For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

  7. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.

  8. Look at the ships also. Though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder.

  9. Wherever the will of the pilot directs, so also the tongue is a small member.

  10. Yet it boasts of great things.

  11. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

  12. And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.

  13. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

  14. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue.

  15. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

  16. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.

  17. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.

  18. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

  19. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening, both fresh and salt water?

  20. Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs?

  21. Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

  22. One of the distinguishing characteristics of human beings, compared to other animals, is our constant use of words.

  23. According to a study of college students conducted in 2007, the average person studied spoke approximately 16,000 words per day.

  24. Male or female, there was not a significant difference based on gender.

  25. The range was 800 words for the least talkative person to 47,000 words for the most talkative person.

  26. But you know, that's only the number of words that come out of our mouths.

  27. I think today, many of us probably type at least as much as we talk.

  28. And we read at least as much as we hear.

  29. Words are everywhere.

  30. Many of things that we know they'll like to hear.

  31. Or when somebody offends us, we might tell them off or vent to another friend or post our frustrations on Facebook.

  32. Or when we're uncomfortable or anxious, we complain and whine.

  33. When we have a strong opinion or a strong reaction to something, we want to make it known.

  34. And most of the time, I think we just say what we want to say and go on with our lives.

  35. I mean, if I really did speak 16,000 words yesterday, or even half or a quarter of that amount, how many of those do I remember today?

  36. We're often careless in how we speak.

  37. You know, I think we also know that words spoken to us can stay with us for a long time.

  38. When I was in elementary school, I remember hearing that old rhyme,

  39. sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

  40. Now, perhaps that statement was meant to express courage and resilience in the face of threats or insults.

  41. And courage and resilience are good qualities to cultivate, but it's simply not true to say that words will never hurt.

  42. Doug Moo, commenting on this very passage,

  43. I think in James, I think rightly said,

  44. far easier to heal are the wounds caused by sticks and stones than the damage caused by words.

  45. I think in most cases that is true.

  46. The passage we're looking at this morning tells us that our words matter.

  47. They matter a lot.

  48. And so we'll look at this passage under three headings.

  49. First, the power of our words in verses 1 through verse 5, the first half of verse 5.

  50. And second, the danger of our words from second half of verse 5 to verse 8.

  51. And third, the inconsistency of our words in verses 9 to 12.

  52. So the power of our words, the danger of our words, and the inconsistency of our words.

  53. First, the power of our words.

  54. Now, James begins this section in verse 1 with a warning that would have immediately caught his hearer's attention.

  55. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers.

  56. Now, imagine a doctor speaking to a class of prospective medical school students

  57. and opening his talk by saying, not many of you should become physicians.

  58. Or, you know, I thought if I was speaking to a group of seminary students,

  59. and if I said, not many of you should become pastors.

  60. Right?

  61. You might be surprised to hear things like that.

  62. Right?

  63. Verse 1 is not quite what you'd expect to hear from someone who is himself a teacher.

  64. James says we, right?

  65. He identifies himself as a teacher.

  66. He's talking about teachers in the church particularly.

  67. You might expect James to give more of a recruiting pitch.

  68. We need more teachers.

  69. You should consider this.

  70. But James actually felt the need to give a warning

  71. to those who are aspiring to teach and lead in the Christian church.

  72. You see, many of the people James was writing to were poor.

  73. They were being persecuted.

  74. They were being mistreated by their wealthy landlords and bosses.

  75. And so the church was one of the few places

  76. where they could potentially get some respect.

  77. where they might rise to a position of honor and even authority.

  78. Right?

  79. In their society, maybe 10% of people could read and write.

  80. And so teachers who could read and write and speak in public,

  81. especially in the Jewish context, were highly regarded.

  82. But James wanted to remind them,

  83. being a teacher in the church is not primarily a high honor to enjoy.

  84. It's primarily a high responsibility to steward.

  85. You see, what is the highest honor in the church of Jesus Christ?

  86. The highest honor in the church of Jesus Christ

  87. is not standing up at the pulpit,

  88. being a pastor, being a recognized leader.

  89. The highest honor in the church belongs to every single believer in Jesus Christ.

  90. It's through your connection to Christ,

  91. you are a child of God and an heir of his heavenly kingdom.

  92. That is the highest honor you can aspire to or experience anywhere.

  93. To be a child of the king of the universe.

  94. To belong to him now and forever.

  95. There's no higher privilege and honor available to human beings anywhere.

  96. And so James is reminding us,

  97. if you're dissatisfied with the honor of being a child of God,

  98. don't become a church leader.

  99. Because you won't help yourself or anybody else.

  100. James says, no, teaching in the church is a high responsibility.

  101. We who teach will be held to a higher standard.

  102. Because we talk a lot.

  103. And lots of people are listening.

  104. We all fall short in many ways,

  105. but when lots of people are listening

  106. and when you're speaking to a lot of people,

  107. you have to be doubly careful.

  108. James says in this chapter that we who teach must be extra careful

  109. both about what we say and about how we live.

  110. If you notice, the first half of this chapter

  111. that we're looking at today focuses on what we say.

  112. The second half of this chapter,

  113. what we'll look at next week,

  114. starting at verse 13,

  115. focuses on how we live.

  116. Right?

  117. Who is wise and understanding among you by his good conduct,

  118. let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

  119. Now, you could take everything that James says

  120. in verses 1 to 12

  121. and apply it specifically to teachers and leaders in the church.

  122. That would be a fruitful exercise

  123. for those of us who are teachers and leaders in the church

  124. but I think James is making a more general point.

  125. Right?

  126. He starts with a specific warning

  127. and then he moves to a more general point

  128. that has a broad application to all of us.

  129. Right?

  130. And he begins by saying,

  131. our words have power.

  132. Look at the two images he uses in verses 3 and 4.

  133. First, verse 3.

  134. A small bit in the horse's mouth

  135. is the means by which a rider guides the whole body of the horse.

  136. And then verse 4.

  137. A small rudder is the means by which the pilot

  138. or the captain guides a large ship.

  139. So in other words,

  140. James is saying the tongue

  141. sets the pace for the rest of the body.

  142. If we learn to bridle our tongue,

  143. control our tongue,

  144. then we can also learn to exercise self-control

  145. and discipline over the other parts of our body.

  146. If we don't bridle our tongue,

  147. then the rest of our body will tend to go rogue as well.

  148. James wants us to marvel how a very small instrument,

  149. right?

  150. A bit in the horse's mouth,

  151. right?

  152. In the mouth of a large horse,

  153. a rudder,

  154. right?

  155. Tiny thing compared to a large ship

  156. has effects that are vastly disproportionate to its size.

  157. Tiny but mighty, we might say.

  158. Right?

  159. And James says,

  160. if this is true of horses and boats,

  161. how much more is it true of human beings?

  162. So also the tongue is a small member,

  163. yet it boasts of great things.

  164. Now, when James talks about boasting in verse 5,

  165. he's not only referring to bad kinds of speech.

  166. Later in chapter 4,

  167. James will refer to boasting in arrogance,

  168. which he says is evil.

  169. But already in chapter 1,

  170. chapter 1 verse 9,

  171. he's talked about boasting in humility.

  172. So he says,

  173. let the lowly brother or sister

  174. boast in their exaltation in Christ.

  175. In other words,

  176. as Christians,

  177. we can boast about what God has done for us.

  178. How he's forgiven our sins

  179. and renewed our minds

  180. and lifted us out of the pit of despair

  181. and given us real and lasting hope.

  182. We can rejoice

  183. even when we're beaten down by trials

  184. because by God's grace,

  185. we're still walking with Jesus

  186. and he is walking with us

  187. on the road to glory.

  188. Right?

  189. There are things we can boast about.

  190. In other words,

  191. that we can rejoice in,

  192. that we can celebrate,

  193. that we can tell others about

  194. with energy and excitement and joy.

  195. So the tongue isn't only a huge liability.

  196. Right?

  197. James doesn't begin by speaking

  198. about the negative potential of the tongue.

  199. He reminds us of the positive potential of the tongue.

  200. It has great potential for positive good.

  201. Right?

  202. That's why James talks about guiding

  203. or bridling our tongue,

  204. not just silencing our tongue.

  205. Right?

  206. Already in chapter 1,

  207. James said we should be quick to listen

  208. and slow to speak

  209. and slow to anger,

  210. but that does mean

  211. that there is a time to speak

  212. and that there is a time to be angry.

  213. Now, for example,

  214. let's say if you're having conflict or tension

  215. in marriage or some other close relationship.

  216. And by the way,

  217. let me just say,

  218. these last few months

  219. have brought out all kinds of conflict and tension

  220. in all kinds of relationships.

  221. So if you're feeling that somewhere or other,

  222. you're not alone.

  223. But the solution to conflict and tension

  224. is not to just stop talking to each other.

  225. Right?

  226. Especially within a family relationship

  227. or someone you're living with.

  228. Right?

  229. The solution is not to just stop talking to each other

  230. or avoid all difficult conversations.

  231. You actually have to learn to communicate with words.

  232. And sometimes that includes expressing anger

  233. or disappointment

  234. or other difficult emotions

  235. in a way that is honest and sincere

  236. without also being destructive and toxic.

  237. When my wife and I were dating,

  238. a wise older woman said to us,

  239. no two people are compatible.

  240. She said,

  241. it's not whether you have conflict,

  242. but it's how you deal with it

  243. that will either strengthen

  244. or strain your marriage.

  245. You see, conflict or tension

  246. can be an opportunity

  247. to learn to communicate with our words

  248. and to grow together as a result.

  249. And the book of Proverbs talks about

  250. how wise words can bring healing

  251. and restoration

  252. where there's been hurt

  253. and division and confusion.

  254. So here's a few Proverbs

  255. from the book of Proverbs.

  256. The tongue of the wise brings healing.

  257. An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.

  258. Gracious words are a honeycomb,

  259. sweet to the soul

  260. and healing to the bones.

  261. Like an ornament of fine gold

  262. is the rebuke of a wise judge

  263. to a listening ear.

  264. With patience, a ruler may be persuaded

  265. and a soft tongue will break a bone.

  266. A soft answer turns away wrath.

  267. So there's all kinds of positive potential

  268. for good effects of honest and kind

  269. and gentle and careful

  270. and intentional speech.

  271. Words can be a powerful force of good.

  272. That's what we see in this first section.

  273. But then the second section,

  274. verses five to eight,

  275. emphasizes the danger of our words.

  276. James continues with the contrast

  277. of small things

  278. that have big effects.

  279. But then he introduces

  280. a different image

  281. in the second half of verse five.

  282. How great a forest

  283. is set ablaze

  284. by such a small fire.

  285. And the tongue

  286. is a fire.

  287. I mean, think about it.

  288. Forest fires,

  289. brush fires,

  290. houses burn,

  291. it all starts

  292. with a small spark.

  293. Often

  294. completely unintentional.

  295. James is also drawing upon

  296. the wisdom of Proverbs here.

  297. Here's some other Proverbs

  298. about the destructive potential

  299. of speech.

  300. A worthless man

  301. plots evil

  302. and his speech

  303. is like a scorching fire.

  304. A dishonest person

  305. spreads strife

  306. and a gossip

  307. separates close friends.

  308. Evildoers are trapped

  309. by their sinful talk.

  310. The words of the reckless

  311. pierce like swords.

  312. Starting a quarrel

  313. is like breaching a dam.

  314. The mouths of fools

  315. are their undoing

  316. and their lips

  317. are a snare

  318. to their very lives.

  319. The point is,

  320. words can be a powerful force

  321. for good,

  322. but they can also result

  323. in ruin

  324. and destruction

  325. that spirals

  326. out of control.

  327. You see,

  328. once a fire

  329. starts spreading,

  330. you can't just say,

  331. oops,

  332. sorry I dropped

  333. the match

  334. in the bushes.

  335. I wish I hadn't

  336. done that.

  337. Okay,

  338. problem solved,

  339. let's go on with life

  340. as if it never happened.

  341. No.

  342. Right?

  343. It's much easier

  344. to start a fire

  345. than to put out a fire

  346. that starts raging

  347. out of control.

  348. And similarly,

  349. it takes far more

  350. time and energy

  351. to clean up the mess

  352. caused by unrighteous words

  353. than it did to say

  354. those words

  355. in the first place.

  356. It's not that hard

  357. to lie,

  358. gossip,

  359. brag,

  360. manipulate,

  361. blame,

  362. ridicule,

  363. quarrel,

  364. complain.

  365. Unrighteous words

  366. can come out

  367. of our mouths

  368. without much effort,

  369. even without us

  370. really thinking about it.

  371. But unrighteous words

  372. carry destructive power.

  373. And when serious damage

  374. has been done,

  375. often it's not enough

  376. to just say,

  377. I'm sorry I said that,

  378. can we go on

  379. as if it never happened?

  380. In some cases,

  381. it may take

  382. a significant investment

  383. of time and energy

  384. to rebuild

  385. healthy patterns

  386. of relating

  387. to one another.

  388. Because even after

  389. the fire has died out,

  390. you're still dealing

  391. with all the charred

  392. wreckage

  393. that has been

  394. consumed by it.

  395. James wants us

  396. to take seriously

  397. the danger

  398. of our words.

  399. and along

  400. with the image

  401. of a brush fire,

  402. James uses

  403. the image

  404. of pollution

  405. or contamination

  406. in verse 6.

  407. The tongue is a world

  408. of unrighteousness

  409. staining the whole body.

  410. Again,

  411. I think it's the same point.

  412. It's much easier

  413. to stain a piece

  414. of clothing

  415. than to remove

  416. a stain

  417. that is set in.

  418. And we might ask,

  419. where does this

  420. destructive power,

  421. this polluting

  422. stain,

  423. ultimately come from?

  424. James says

  425. it's kindled

  426. by hell itself.

  427. I mean,

  428. think about the story

  429. of how sin

  430. entered the world

  431. in Genesis 3.

  432. It began

  433. with the serpent

  434. speaking

  435. deceptive

  436. and manipulative

  437. words to Eve,

  438. planting seeds

  439. of distrust

  440. and resentment

  441. toward God.

  442. did God

  443. really say that?

  444. Why wouldn't

  445. he want you

  446. to eat from that tree?

  447. You certainly

  448. won't die

  449. if you do.

  450. You're pretty smart.

  451. You should be able

  452. to make a judgment

  453. on your own.

  454. Maybe God's trying

  455. to hold something

  456. back from you.

  457. And then after Eve

  458. and then Adam

  459. take and eat

  460. of the forbidden fruit,

  461. what happens?

  462. God comes to Adam,

  463. says,

  464. dude,

  465. what's up?

  466. What happened?

  467. And Adam says,

  468. she made me do it.

  469. The woman

  470. who you gave

  471. to be with me,

  472. she gave me

  473. fruit of the tree

  474. and I ate.

  475. Deflect responsibility,

  476. blame somebody else.

  477. So ever since then,

  478. the course of human history

  479. have been polluted

  480. by unrighteous words.

  481. Deception

  482. and manipulation,

  483. blaming

  484. and deflecting,

  485. half-truths

  486. and outright lies,

  487. gossip and ridicule,

  488. cursing and complaining,

  489. bragging

  490. and flattering.

  491. Our words

  492. have caused

  493. all kinds

  494. of ruin

  495. and destruction.

  496. You see,

  497. we figured out

  498. how to tame,

  499. how to restrain,

  500. how to hold

  501. in check

  502. just about

  503. everything else

  504. on earth.

  505. But we haven't

  506. figured out

  507. how to tame

  508. one of the smallest

  509. members

  510. of our own

  511. bodies.

  512. Our tongues

  513. are restless,

  514. unstable,

  515. disorderly,

  516. unpredictable,

  517. like poisonous snakes,

  518. ready to strike

  519. at any moment.

  520. That's the image

  521. James is giving us

  522. in verses 7 and 8.

  523. Our words

  524. are powerful

  525. but they're

  526. also dangerous.

  527. And then

  528. in verses 9 to 12,

  529. James highlights

  530. the greatest

  531. danger of all,

  532. the inconsistency

  533. of our words.

  534. With our tongue

  535. we bless

  536. the Lord,

  537. our Lord

  538. and Father

  539. and with it

  540. we curse people

  541. who are made

  542. in the likeness

  543. of God.

  544. Right?

  545. James here

  546. points us

  547. to some of

  548. the best

  549. ways

  550. we can use

  551. words.

  552. Right?

  553. The positive

  554. potential of words

  555. praising and

  556. blessing God

  557. and some of the

  558. worst,

  559. cursing other

  560. people.

  561. Think about it.

  562. Is there any

  563. more noble

  564. use of human

  565. words

  566. than to declare

  567. the praises

  568. of the author

  569. of life himself?

  570. Is there any

  571. more fitting

  572. way to use

  573. our tongues

  574. than to look

  575. up to our

  576. heavenly Father

  577. and bless

  578. his holy name

  579. for he is good

  580. and his love

  581. endures forever?

  582. You know,

  583. this is something

  584. that no other

  585. earthly creature

  586. can do.

  587. Yes,

  588. the Psalms

  589. and the prophets

  590. speak poetically

  591. about the heavens

  592. declaring the glory

  593. of God

  594. and the skies

  595. proclaiming his

  596. handiwork

  597. and the mountains

  598. and the hills

  599. breaking into song

  600. but of all

  601. earthly creatures

  602. it's only human

  603. beings who have

  604. put such thoughts

  605. into written

  606. words.

  607. It's only human

  608. beings who have

  609. written down

  610. intricately reasoned

  611. arguments and

  612. composed beautiful

  613. poetry and song

  614. when God made us

  615. in his image,

  616. in his likeness.

  617. He installed us

  618. as priests

  619. in his heavenly

  620. temple.

  621. Right?

  622. Our job was

  623. and is to offer

  624. up the praises

  625. of all creation

  626. to the Lord

  627. of all.

  628. that's a glorious

  629. and sacred

  630. thing.

  631. With our

  632. words

  633. to lead

  634. all creation

  635. that gives

  636. wordless

  637. praise

  638. to God

  639. almighty.

  640. That's an

  641. amazing and

  642. powerful thing

  643. that we can do

  644. with our

  645. words.

  646. But then

  647. James points

  648. to one of the

  649. worst things

  650. we can do

  651. with our

  652. words

  653. to curse

  654. other human

  655. beings.

  656. Now notice

  657. what James

  658. doesn't say.

  659. He doesn't

  660. say

  661. with our

  662. tongue

  663. we bless

  664. God

  665. and then

  666. with our

  667. tongue

  668. we curse

  669. God.

  670. Why doesn't

  671. he say

  672. that?

  673. Right?

  674. Of course

  675. cursing God

  676. is perhaps

  677. the worst

  678. thing we

  679. could do

  680. with our

  681. tongues.

  682. But James

  683. is speaking

  684. to religious

  685. people.

  686. He's speaking

  687. to people

  688. who identify

  689. as Christians

  690. who say

  691. they believe

  692. in the God

  693. of the Bible.

  694. Right?

  695. Many of

  696. James'

  697. hearers

  698. right?

  699. Perhaps

  700. many of

  701. us would

  702. say

  703. I've

  704. never

  705. cursed

  706. God.

  707. I'm not

  708. like those

  709. irreverent

  710. atheists

  711. and pagans.

  712. But James

  713. says

  714. have you

  715. not

  716. dishonored

  717. your

  718. fellow

  719. human

  720. beings

  721. who are

  722. made

  723. in the

  724. image

  725. of

  726. God?

  727. He

  728. says

  729. think

  730. about it

  731. have you

  732. not

  733. dishonored

  734. devalued

  735. despised

  736. other

  737. human

  738. beings?

  739. And

  740. don't

  741. you

  742. realize

  743. that

  744. when

  745. you

  746. dishonor

  747. another

  748. human

  749. being

  750. you

  751. are

  752. dishonoring

  753. the

  754. one

  755. in

  756. whose

  757. image

  758. and

  759. likeness

  760. they

  761. were

  762. made?

  763. You

  764. see

  765. when

  766. James

  767. talks

  768. about

  769. cursing

  770. he's

  771. not

  772. just

  773. talking

  774. about

  775. foul

  776. language.

  777. You

  778. can

  779. dishonor

  780. and

  781. devalue

  782. and despise

  783. another

  784. human

  785. being

  786. while

  787. remaining

  788. very

  789. polite

  790. and

  791. socially

  792. acceptable.

  793. James

  794. says

  795. consider

  796. the

  797. words

  798. that

  799. have

  800. come

  801. out

  802. of

  803. our

  804. mouths

  805. this

  806. morning

  807. even

  808. as

  809. we've

  810. sung

  811. or

  812. spoken

  813. hymns

  814. and

  815. songs

  816. of

  817. praise.

  818. And

  819. then he

  820. challenges

  821. us

  822. consider

  823. all

  824. the

  825. words

  826. that

  827. have

  828. come

  829. out

  830. of

  831. our

  832. mouths

  833. during

  834. the

  835. past

  836. week.

  837. toward

  838. our

  839. spouses

  840. toward

  841. our

  842. kids

  843. toward

  844. our

  845. housemates

  846. toward

  847. our

  848. bosses

  849. toward

  850. our

  851. coworkers

  852. toward

  853. our

  854. next

  855. door

  856. neighbors

  857. toward

  858. distracted

  859. drivers

  860. and

  861. jaywalking

  862. pedestrians

  863. toward

  864. people

  865. of

  866. other

  867. nationalities

  868. or other

  869. racial

  870. groups

  871. toward

  872. people

  873. who

  874. hold

  875. opposing

  876. political

  877. views

  878. toward

  879. people

  880. who

  881. have

  882. misunderstood

  883. you

  884. and

  885. mistreated

  886. you

  887. personally.

  888. Think

  889. about

  890. all

  891. those

  892. image

  893. bearers

  894. of

  895. God

  896. that

  897. we've

  898. interacted

  899. with

  900. in the

  901. last

  902. week.

  903. What

  904. have

  905. our

  906. words

  907. to

  908. them

  909. communicated?

  910. Does

  911. James

  912. challenge

  913. hit

  914. home?

  915. It

  916. did

  917. for me.

  918. From

  919. the same

  920. mouth

  921. come

  922. blessing

  923. and

  924. cursing.

  925. My

  926. brothers

  927. and

  928. sisters

  929. this

  930. ought

  931. not

  932. to

  933. be

  934. so.

  935. verses

  936. 11

  937. and

  938. 12

  939. James

  940. points

  941. out

  942. that

  943. that

  944. kind

  945. of

  946. inconsistency

  947. doesn't

  948. happen

  949. anywhere

  950. else

  951. in the

  952. created

  953. order.

  954. A

  955. spring

  956. doesn't

  957. pour

  958. forth

  959. fresh

  960. and

  961. salt

  962. water

  963. simultaneously.

  964. A

  965. tree

  966. only bears

  967. fruit

  968. of its

  969. own

  970. kind

  971. not

  972. of

  973. another

  974. kind.

  975. And

  976. a

  977. salt

  978. pond

  979. can't

  980. yield

  981. fresh

  982. water.

  983. But

  984. with

  985. our

  986. tongues

  987. we can

  988. be

  989. praising

  990. God

  991. in one

  992. moment

  993. and

  994. dishonoring

  995. one

  996. of his

  997. image

  998. bearers

  999. in the

  1000. next.

  1001. James

  1002. says

  1003. this is

  1004. a

  1005. monstrous

  1006. inconsistency

  1007. it's

  1008. a

  1009. horrific

  1010. perversion

  1011. of God's

  1012. created

  1013. order

  1014. and

  1015. it's

  1016. one

  1017. that

  1018. James

  1019. exposes

  1020. and

  1021. challenges.

  1022. Do we

  1023. recognize

  1024. the ways

  1025. that

  1026. our

  1027. words

  1028. have been

  1029. inconsistent

  1030. with one

  1031. another?

  1032. God

  1033. is

  1034. to

  1035. God

  1036. is

  1037. all

  1038. about

  1039. steadfastness.

  1040. James'

  1041. primary

  1042. concern

  1043. is that

  1044. we

  1045. become

  1046. people

  1047. who

  1048. are

  1049. steadfast

  1050. in

  1051. our

  1052. love

  1053. undivided

  1054. in

  1055. our

  1056. loyalty

  1057. to

  1058. God

  1059. and

  1060. to

  1061. his

  1062. son

  1063. Jesus

  1064. Christ

  1065. because

  1066. God

  1067. is

  1068. steadfast

  1069. in

  1070. his

  1071. love

  1072. and

  1073. undivided

  1074. in

  1075. his

  1076. loyalty

  1077. to

  1078. us.

  1079. He

  1080. is

  1081. the

  1082. father

  1083. of

  1084. lights

  1085. with

  1086. whom

  1087. there

  1088. is

  1089. no

  1090. variation

  1091. or

  1092. shadow

  1093. due

  1094. to

  1095. change.

  1096. He

  1097. is

  1098. good

  1099. and

  1100. his

  1101. steadfast

  1102. love

  1103. endures

  1104. forever.

  1105. God

  1106. is

  1107. calling

  1108. us

  1109. to

  1110. be

  1111. the

  1112. kind

  1113. of

  1114. people

  1115. that

  1116. develop

  1117. that

  1118. steadfastness.

  1119. Remember

  1120. at the

  1121. beginning

  1122. he said

  1123. some

  1124. of that

  1125. steadfastness

  1126. is

  1127. produced

  1128. through

  1129. trials,

  1130. through

  1131. hard

  1132. experiences.

  1133. It's

  1134. not

  1135. something

  1136. we

  1137. naturally

  1138. begin

  1139. with

  1140. but

  1141. it's

  1142. something

  1143. that

  1144. we

  1145. can

  1146. grow

  1147. into

  1148. and

  1149. develop

  1150. over

  1151. time.

  1152. But

  1153. here

  1154. James

  1155. is

  1156. pointing

  1157. out

  1158. a

  1159. specific

  1160. area

  1161. where

  1162. if

  1163. we're

  1164. honest

  1165. with

  1166. ourselves

  1167. many

  1168. of

  1169. us

  1170. perhaps

  1171. even

  1172. all

  1173. of

  1174. us

  1175. have

  1176. failed

  1177. to

  1178. express

  1179. that

  1180. kind

  1181. of

  1182. steadfastness

  1183. and

  1184. instead

  1185. we've

  1186. expressed

  1187. inconsistency.

  1188. And

  1189. you

  1190. see

  1191. the

  1192. inconsistency

  1193. of our

  1194. words

  1195. exposes

  1196. the

  1197. inconsistency

  1198. of our

  1199. hearts.

  1200. It's

  1201. very likely

  1202. that James

  1203. was thinking

  1204. back to

  1205. Jesus'

  1206. own

  1207. teaching.

  1208. Matthew

  1209. 15

  1210. 18

  1211. Jesus

  1212. said

  1213. what

  1214. comes

  1215. out

  1216. of the

  1217. mouth

  1218. proceeds

  1219. from

  1220. the

  1221. heart.

  1222. And

  1223. that

  1224. is what

  1225. defiles

  1226. a person.

  1227. That's

  1228. what

  1229. pollutes

  1230. us.

  1231. That's

  1232. what

  1233. stains

  1234. us.

  1235. That's

  1236. what

  1237. contaminates

  1238. us

  1239. is what's

  1240. in our

  1241. heart.

  1242. And

  1243. what

  1244. comes

  1245. out of

  1246. our

  1247. mouth

  1248. simply

  1249. shows

  1250. us

  1251. something

  1252. that's

  1253. in our

  1254. heart.

  1255. You

  1256. see,

  1257. how do

  1258. we

  1259. remedy

  1260. the

  1261. inconsistency

  1262. of our

  1263. words?

  1264. How do

  1265. we tame

  1266. our

  1267. tongues

  1268. that so

  1269. easily

  1270. get us

  1271. into

  1272. trouble?

  1273. James

  1274. says we

  1275. need

  1276. change

  1277. at a

  1278. heart

  1279. level.

  1280. And we

  1281. need change

  1282. that doesn't

  1283. originate

  1284. from

  1285. ourselves.

  1286. He

  1287. already

  1288. said in

  1289. verse 8,

  1290. no human

  1291. being can

  1292. tame the

  1293. tongue.

  1294. Literally

  1295. verse 8

  1296. reads,

  1297. but the

  1298. tongue

  1299. no one

  1300. is able

  1301. to tame

  1302. of

  1303. mankind.

  1304. And yet

  1305. in that

  1306. statement,

  1307. I think

  1308. there is a

  1309. glimmer of

  1310. hope.

  1311. Many

  1312. years ago,

  1313. the early

  1314. church father

  1315. Augustine

  1316. commented on

  1317. that verse.

  1318. And he

  1319. noticed,

  1320. he said,

  1321. James does

  1322. not say

  1323. simply that

  1324. no one

  1325. can tame

  1326. the tongue,

  1327. but no

  1328. one among

  1329. humans.

  1330. So that

  1331. when it

  1332. is tamed,

  1333. we confess

  1334. that this

  1335. is brought

  1336. about by

  1337. the mercy,

  1338. the help,

  1339. the grace

  1340. of God.

  1341. You see,

  1342. there is

  1343. hope for

  1344. us.

  1345. Because the

  1346. God who

  1347. is steadfast,

  1348. the father

  1349. of life,

  1350. with whom

  1351. there is

  1352. no variation

  1353. or shadow

  1354. due to

  1355. change,

  1356. the God

  1357. who is

  1358. always

  1359. true to

  1360. his word,

  1361. he has

  1362. intervened

  1363. on our

  1364. behalf.

  1365. He has

  1366. sent his

  1367. one and

  1368. only son

  1369. into the

  1370. world to

  1371. save us

  1372. from the

  1373. fires of

  1374. hell

  1375. and from

  1376. the fires

  1377. of evil

  1378. and rebellion

  1379. that burn

  1380. within our

  1381. own hearts

  1382. and come

  1383. out

  1384. through our

  1385. unrighteous

  1386. words.

  1387. God's

  1388. love.

  1389. He has

  1390. come to

  1391. save us

  1392. from that

  1393. restless

  1394. evil,

  1395. that deadly

  1396. poison.

  1397. In Jesus

  1398. Christ,

  1399. God has

  1400. done for

  1401. us what

  1402. we could

  1403. not do

  1404. for

  1405. ourselves.

  1406. He put

  1407. it to

  1408. death on

  1409. the cross

  1410. and he

  1411. rose triumphantly

  1412. from the

  1413. grave.

  1414. You see,

  1415. our hope

  1416. does not

  1417. come from

  1418. our good

  1419. words.

  1420. James is not

  1421. saying,

  1422. just try

  1423. harder and

  1424. say better

  1425. things.

  1426. No,

  1427. he's pointing

  1428. us to our

  1429. true hope

  1430. from the

  1431. living and

  1432. abiding

  1433. word of

  1434. God,

  1435. from the

  1436. truth about

  1437. what Jesus

  1438. has done

  1439. on our

  1440. behalf.

  1441. As James

  1442. said earlier

  1443. in chapter

  1444. one,

  1445. the implanted

  1446. word of

  1447. God is

  1448. able to

  1449. save your

  1450. souls.

  1451. That is

  1452. the word

  1453. that brings

  1454. healing and

  1455. forgiveness,

  1456. new life and

  1457. lasting change

  1458. that is sweet

  1459. to our soul

  1460. and healing

  1461. to our

  1462. bones.

  1463. So,

  1464. brothers and

  1465. sisters,

  1466. cling to the

  1467. truth about

  1468. what God

  1469. has done

  1470. for us

  1471. in Jesus

  1472. Christ.

  1473. Listen to

  1474. that word.

  1475. Let that

  1476. truth sink

  1477. deeply into

  1478. your heart

  1479. above all

  1480. else.

  1481. Draw upon

  1482. that new

  1483. creation life

  1484. that God

  1485. has bestowed

  1486. upon us

  1487. through the

  1488. resurrection

  1489. of Jesus

  1490. himself and

  1491. out of the

  1492. abundance of

  1493. a heart that

  1494. is being

  1495. renewed day

  1496. by day by

  1497. the grace

  1498. of God.

  1499. Let us

  1500. speak.

  1501. Let us

  1502. pray.

  1503. Father God,

  1504. we pray that

  1505. you would

  1506. forgive us

  1507. for our

  1508. unrighteous

  1509. words,

  1510. for our

  1511. words that

  1512. have started

  1513. all kinds

  1514. of fires,

  1515. that have

  1516. caused

  1517. harm

  1518. and ruin

  1519. and destruction

  1520. and mistrust.

  1521. we thank

  1522. you that

  1523. by your

  1524. grace you

  1525. have come

  1526. to repair

  1527. and heal

  1528. us.

  1529. We thank

  1530. you for

  1531. the reliability

  1532. and the

  1533. power of

  1534. your word,

  1535. that you

  1536. have been

  1537. faithful to

  1538. your word,

  1539. that you

  1540. sent your

  1541. only son,

  1542. the word

  1543. of God

  1544. himself,

  1545. Jesus

  1546. Christ our

  1547. Lord,

  1548. to save

  1549. us and

  1550. fill us

  1551. with your

  1552. spirit and

  1553. give us

  1554. everlasting

  1555. hope.

  1556. Father,

  1557. we pray that

  1558. you would

  1559. fill our

  1560. hearts,

  1561. fill our

  1562. hearts with

  1563. your truth,

  1564. with your

  1565. love,

  1566. with your

  1567. steadfastness,

  1568. that our

  1569. words may

  1570. more and

  1571. more come

  1572. to reflect

  1573. your

  1574. steadfast

  1575. love,

  1576. your

  1577. undivided

  1578. loyalty and

  1579. faithfulness to

  1580. us.

  1581. May our

  1582. words come

  1583. to reflect

  1584. that

  1585. steadfastness

  1586. and

  1587. consistency

  1588. and stability

  1589. that comes

  1590. from being

  1591. anchored in

  1592. you.

  1593. We pray

  1594. all these

  1595. things in

  1596. Jesus'

  1597. name.

  1598. Amen.
