  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. It's good to have you joining us this morning, whether you're at home or you're here in the sanctuary.

  3. Our sermon passage today is James chapter 3, verses 13 through 18.

    James 3:13–18

  4. James chapter 3, verses 13 through 18.

    James 3:13–18

  5. We've been walking through the book of James this summer, and we're going to continue doing that today.

  6. Let me pray, and then I'll read this passage for us.

  7. Let's pray together.

  8. Our Father, we confess that in our own human reason and understanding, God, the things of you remain dark and cloudy.

  9. But we thank you that by the gift of your Spirit, you come and you give light to our minds,

  10. and more importantly, you bring light to our hearts and to our wills, that we might embrace all that you are.

  11. And to do just what we've sung, to worship your holy name.

  12. Your name, who you've revealed yourself to be.

  13. And all of your grace and majesty and justice.

  14. Oh, Lord, would you come through this passage that we're about to read and meditate on this morning.

  15. Would you come and do just that?

  16. Empower our hearts to worship your holy name and to live lives as a result that are honoring to your name.

  17. We ask this in Christ's name.

  18. Amen.

  19. All right.

  20. James 3, verses 13 through 18.

    James 3:13–18

  21. Let me read this for us.

  22. Who is wise and understanding among you?

  23. By his good conduct, let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

  24. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.

  25. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

  26. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

  27. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason,

  28. full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

  29. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

  30. So what does real wisdom look like?

  31. That's what James wants us to consider in the text before us.

  32. Picture in your mind maybe someone who embodies wisdom.

  33. What do they look like to you?

  34. Are they an old scholar, a wise sage with a big gray beard?

  35. But keep in mind, in the Bible, wisdom means something more than just intelligence or learning.

  36. Wisdom actually means something more like skill.

  37. The skill of living life as it was meant to be lived.

  38. Now that includes knowledge, but it means a lot more.

  39. It's like a sailor who knows how to read the winds and the waves,

  40. and she can position her sails and her rudder just right to bring the ship safely home through the storm.

  41. That's biblical wisdom.

  42. Or the weaver who can bring all the threads together to make a beautiful whole.

  43. That's the sense of wisdom.

  44. Not just knowledge, but living skillfully in God's world.

  45. And for James here in chapter 3, this is a very practical question.

  46. It's a very practical question for us as a church.

  47. Because as the context of chapter 3 and 4 show us,

  48. in the communities to whom James was writing,

  49. conflict and dissension were on the rise.

  50. As external pressures mounted around them,

  51. perhaps trial, hardship, economic oppression,

  52. as those things happened around these young churches,

  53. internally conflict started to rise up.

  54. In verses 1 through 12 of chapter 3,

  55. what we looked at last week,

  56. James has been talking about the power and the danger of the uncontrolled tongue.

  57. And from chapter 3, verse 1,

  58. it seems that the problem even involved their teachers, their leaders,

  59. some of whom were perhaps claiming to be wise.

  60. But what really is wisdom?

  61. And as we seek to be the church today,

  62. what should it look like for us to be wise?

  63. Now remember, for James, in this book of James,

  64. his vision of the church is that it's meant to be the first fruit of God's new creation.

  65. Remember that from chapter 1, verse 18?

  66. We've been brought forth by the word of truth, the gospel,

  67. into new life.

  68. We've been brought forth by the word of truth

  69. in order to live out what James calls the law of liberty,

  70. the law of love.

  71. But as we follow that call,

  72. a question comes.

  73. What sort of wisdom

  74. are we going to employ?

  75. What sort of wisdom

  76. are we going to use

  77. as we seek to live out

  78. the church calling

  79. that we have?

  80. Because you see in our text,

  81. James describes not just one,

  82. but two kinds of wisdom.

  83. There's one from below

  84. and there's one from above.

  85. He makes a contrast.

  86. He makes a distinction

  87. between two kinds of wisdoms.

  88. Why?

  89. Because here's James' big idea

  90. in our text.

  91. He's essentially saying

  92. we cannot be

  93. a heavenly people

  94. and live according to earthly wisdom.

  95. The church cannot be

  96. a heavenly people,

  97. the people it's meant to be,

  98. the new creation,

  99. and live according to earthly wisdom.

  100. The way we do life,

  101. our skill

  102. in living,

  103. in leading,

  104. our practical approach

  105. to everyday matters

  106. and to being together

  107. in community,

  108. it has to be different,

  109. James says.

  110. So let's take a look

  111. at these two kinds of wisdom.

  112. James says there's a wisdom

  113. from below

  114. and there's a wisdom

  115. from above

  116. and for each one

  117. he's actually going to show us

  118. three things

  119. about these two kinds of wisdom.

  120. For each one

  121. he's going to show us

  122. first its nature,

  123. what it's like,

  124. and then second

  125. he's going to show us

  126. its source,

  127. where it's from,

  128. and then third

  129. he's going to show us

  130. the results,

  131. what it brings.

  132. So first,

  133. let's look at the wisdom

  134. from below.

  135. James starts off

  136. this text by saying,

  137. who is wise

  138. and understanding

  139. among you?

  140. Then he says something

  141. that just sounds

  142. so James,

  143. doesn't it?

  144. Let them prove it,

  145. not by their intellect,

  146. not by their credentials,

  147. but by their life.

  148. Not just their work too,

  149. not just their conduct,

  150. but also their character.

  151. He says,

  152. real wisdom is seen

  153. in good conduct,

  154. brought forth

  155. in humility.

  156. But James is kind of

  157. jumping ahead there.

  158. First,

  159. he wants us to see

  160. what this false wisdom,

  161. this wisdom from below

  162. looks like.

  163. So in verse 14,

  164. he begins with his three points.

  165. He says,

  166. okay,

  167. here's what it's like,

  168. here's its character,

  169. here's its traits,

  170. he says,

  171. if you have

  172. bitter jealousy

  173. and selfish ambition

  174. in your hearts,

  175. do not boast

  176. and be false to the truth.

  177. Bitter jealousy

  178. and selfish ambition.

  179. Now bitter jealousy,

  180. that's the sort of thing

  181. that says,

  182. I want what you have.

  183. And selfish ambition says,

  184. I'm willing to divide

  185. and conquer

  186. in order to get it.

  187. In fact,

  188. that phrase,

  189. selfish ambition,

  190. means something like

  191. using divisive means

  192. to promote

  193. your own interests.

  194. You exploit rivalry

  195. or develop a kind of

  196. party spirit

  197. in order to get ahead.

  198. Now,

  199. I'm imagining

  200. that very few of us

  201. walk around

  202. explicitly saying,

  203. I want what you have

  204. and I'm willing

  205. to divide and conquer

  206. to get it.

  207. I've never had

  208. that kind of conversation

  209. with someone.

  210. But notice,

  211. James says,

  212. in your hearts.

  213. What's underneath

  214. your words

  215. and your actions?

  216. Take, for example,

  217. maybe a Christian leader.

  218. On the surface,

  219. they might be teaching

  220. true things.

  221. Even putting forward

  222. what seems like

  223. a great concern

  224. for God's kingdom.

  225. But underneath,

  226. they can be driven

  227. by jealousy.

  228. A desire

  229. to want to be

  230. the biggest

  231. and the best.

  232. To get the praise

  233. that other ministries

  234. or ministers receive.

  235. And along with that,

  236. they can be driven

  237. by selfish ambition.

  238. They could cast

  239. dispersion

  240. on whole groups.

  241. They could create

  242. an us-versus-them

  243. mentality

  244. in order to get ahead.

  245. And now,

  246. here's the danger.

  247. On the surface,

  248. that sort of approach

  249. can produce

  250. what looks like,

  251. at first,

  252. good results.

  253. The word is preached.

  254. The church grows.

  255. People's lives

  256. are impacted

  257. for the good.

  258. But James says,

  259. don't boast

  260. and be false

  261. to the truth.

  262. And by truth here,

  263. he probably means

  264. the same thing

  265. that he meant

  266. back in chapter 1,

  267. verse 18,

  268. when he talks about

  269. the word of truth,

  270. which is the gospel.

  271. In other words,

  272. if underneath

  273. what drives you

  274. or characterizes you

  275. is jealousy

  276. and selfish ambition,

  277. then you're actually

  278. betraying the truth

  279. of the gospel itself.

  280. But this isn't just

  281. a problem

  282. for Christian leaders.

  283. It's a problem

  284. for all of us.

  285. And James is talking

  286. to all of us.

  287. From the classroom

  288. to the workplace

  289. to our neighborhoods,

  290. in any sphere,

  291. jealousy

  292. and selfish ambition

  293. can be

  294. what drives us.

  295. I want what you have

  296. and I'll do what

  297. it takes to get it.

  298. And again,

  299. in the beginning,

  300. it can look like

  301. it's working.

  302. We move to the top

  303. of the class,

  304. we get the promotion

  305. at work,

  306. we get elected

  307. for an office,

  308. but deep down,

  309. we're being false

  310. to the truth.

  311. Because as James shows us

  312. in the next verse,

  313. verse 15,

  314. we need to realize

  315. the source

  316. of this so-called wisdom.

  317. He's just shown us

  318. what it's like

  319. in verse 14.

  320. Now,

  321. in verse 15,

  322. he shows us

  323. where it's from.

  324. Verse 15,

  325. this is not the wisdom

  326. that comes down

  327. from above,

  328. but is earthly,

  329. unspiritual,

  330. demonic.

  331. Whoa.

  332. James does not pull

  333. any punches

  334. in this book,

  335. does he?

  336. Each of these three words,

  337. earthly,

  338. unspiritual,

  339. demonic,

  340. they each describe

  341. different aspects

  342. of the created order

  343. without any reference

  344. to God.

  345. Take earthly,

  346. or what James

  347. and other New Testament

  348. writers elsewhere

  349. call the world.

  350. Now,

  351. that is our corporate

  352. or our social

  353. or our structural

  354. life together

  355. without reference

  356. to God.

  357. Take the word

  358. unspiritual,

  359. that's our personal

  360. life

  361. without reference

  362. to God.

  363. Then,

  364. demonic,

  365. of course,

  366. that's the spiritual

  367. world

  368. without reference

  369. to God.

  370. How tragic

  371. that people

  372. claiming to be

  373. the church,

  374. claiming to be

  375. God's new creation

  376. in their practical

  377. everyday lives

  378. can be living

  379. according to the wisdom

  380. of the very opposite.

  381. Now,

  382. you might be thinking,

  383. demonic?

  384. That's a little harsh,

  385. isn't it?

  386. But do you remember

  387. in the Gospels

  388. when Jesus turns

  389. to his disciples

  390. and he says,

  391. who do people

  392. say that I am?

  393. And the disciples

  394. say,

  395. well,

  396. some people are

  397. saying this

  398. and some people

  399. are saying that.

  400. And then Jesus

  401. says,

  402. well,

  403. who do you say

  404. that I am?

  405. And then Peter,

  406. speaking for all

  407. the rest,

  408. says,

  409. Jesus,

  410. you're the Christ,

  411. you're the Messiah,

  412. you're the Son

  413. of the living God.

  414. And at that moment,

  415. what does Jesus

  416. teach them about next?

  417. Now that they're

  418. professing him

  419. to be the Son of God,

  420. what does he go on

  421. to tell them

  422. and to teach them?

  423. At that moment,

  424. he starts teaching them

  425. about the cross,

  426. that he must be

  427. delivered over

  428. to the authorities

  429. and crucified.

  430. And then what does

  431. Peter say?

  432. He rebukes Jesus,

  433. right?

  434. He says,

  435. Jesus,

  436. no way,

  437. this is not

  438. a winning strategy.

  439. Messiahs don't

  440. get crucified.

  441. This is not

  442. the plan.

  443. And then Jesus

  444. says,

  445. get behind me,

  446. Satan.

  447. You see,

  448. Peter wanted

  449. the Messiah

  450. to come

  451. and divide

  452. and conquer.

  453. Jesus had come,

  454. however,

  455. to make peace

  456. by the blood

  457. of his cross.

  458. Peter's wisdom

  459. in that moment

  460. was from below,

  461. earthly,

  462. unspiritual,

  463. and according

  464. to Jesus himself,

  465. demonic.

  466. Of course,

  467. Jesus' wisdom

  468. looked like foolishness

  469. in the eyes

  470. of the world.

  471. And in that moment,

  472. it looked like foolishness

  473. in the eyes

  474. of the disciples,

  475. too.

  476. But what they

  477. would soon find out

  478. is that the cross

  479. is actually

  480. the wisdom of God

  481. and the very power

  482. of God.

  483. God's wisdom

  484. is the truth.

  485. But what does this

  486. wisdom from below

  487. result in?

  488. We've seen what it's like.

  489. We've seen where it's from.

  490. What's the outcome?

  491. Now,

  492. we've already said

  493. that in the short term,

  494. this wisdom from below

  495. can produce

  496. what looks like success.

  497. But what about

  498. in the long run?

  499. Verse 16.

  500. James says,

  501. for where jealousy

  502. and selfish ambition

  503. exist,

  504. there will be

  505. disorder

  506. and every

  507. vile practice.

  508. Disorder.

  509. Chaos.

  510. Churches will splinter

  511. and split.

  512. People will be torn apart.

  513. Communities will be torn apart.

  514. Communities will turn

  515. against one another

  516. and implode.

  517. Disorder.

  518. And then he says

  519. every vile

  520. or every evil practice.

  521. What will be on the rise?

  522. Selfishness.

  523. Malice.

  524. Gossip.

  525. Greed.

  526. Discrimination.

  527. Apathy.

  528. That's what the real

  529. end result is.

  530. You see,

  531. sometimes we foolishly think

  532. that the ends

  533. justify the means.

  534. But what James

  535. is telling us here

  536. is that the ends

  537. will never escape

  538. the means.

  539. the means

  540. that we use

  541. will be the ends

  542. in the long run

  543. that we produce.

  544. Eugene Peterson

  545. puts it this way,

  546. paraphrasing verse 16.

  547. He says,

  548. whenever you're trying

  549. to look better

  550. than others,

  551. that is jealousy,

  552. or get the better

  553. of others,

  554. selfish ambition,

  555. things fall apart

  556. and everyone

  557. ends up

  558. at the other's

  559. throats.

  560. Whenever you're

  561. trying to look

  562. better than others

  563. or get the better

  564. of others,

  565. things fall apart

  566. and everyone

  567. ends up

  568. at the other's

  569. throats.

  570. So that's the wisdom

  571. from below.

  572. But thankfully,

  573. James doesn't

  574. stop there.

  575. We don't

  576. have to stay

  577. in the wisdom

  578. that's characterized

  579. by trying to look

  580. better than others

  581. and get the better

  582. of others.

  583. You see,

  584. the good news is

  585. there's another

  586. kind of wisdom.

  587. There's a wisdom

  588. from above.

  589. A wisdom

  590. whose source

  591. is God himself.

  592. As James says

  593. in chapter 1,

  594. verse 17,

  595. James says,

  596. every good

  597. and perfect gift

  598. is from above,

  599. coming down

  600. from the Father

  601. of lights.

  602. That's the source.

  603. That's where

  604. this wisdom

  605. is from.

  606. But what does

  607. this wisdom

  608. look like?

  609. And what does

  610. it result in?

  611. Let's look first

  612. at what it looks

  613. like.

  614. Verse 17,

  615. but the wisdom

  616. from above,

  617. James says,

  618. is first pure,

  619. then peaceable,

  620. gentle,

  621. open to reason,

  622. full of mercy

  623. and good fruits,

  624. impartial

  625. and sincere.

  626. Now,

  627. James is sort

  628. of like a word

  629. artist

  630. at this moment.

  631. He's sort of

  632. painting a picture

  633. with these words.

  634. In the Greek text,

  635. there's lots of

  636. alliteration,

  637. there's lots of

  638. assonance among

  639. these words.

  640. They sort of sound

  641. like they're strung

  642. together.

  643. And that would

  644. have made this list

  645. of virtues

  646. very memorable

  647. and very powerful

  648. to the original

  649. listeners.

  650. So what James

  651. is trying to do

  652. here is he's

  653. trying to paint

  654. a picture of the

  655. heart of true

  656. wisdom,

  657. of God's wisdom.

  658. And we won't

  659. be able to

  660. unpack every

  661. stroke of that

  662. painting that

  663. he's doing here,

  664. but let's just

  665. focus on the

  666. first two words.

  667. First pure,

  668. then peaceable.

  669. Now,

  670. when something

  671. is pure,

  672. it's clean,

  673. right?

  674. There's honesty,

  675. there's integrity

  676. to it.

  677. There's nothing

  678. that's sort of

  679. diminishing it

  680. or weakening it.

  681. Think of metal

  682. ore that's been

  683. dug out of the

  684. earth.

  685. And then it gets

  686. put into a fire

  687. and the dross,

  688. the impurities,

  689. are kind of

  690. burned away.

  691. And the pure

  692. metal that comes

  693. out is not just

  694. more brilliant,

  695. but it's also

  696. more resilient.

  697. It's stronger.

  698. So this wisdom

  699. from above

  700. is first of all

  701. pure.

  702. It has no

  703. mixed motives.

  704. It has no

  705. conflicting

  706. agendas.

  707. In other

  708. words,

  709. it's not

  710. riddled

  711. with the

  712. bitter

  713. jealousies

  714. of the

  715. old wisdom

  716. from below.

  717. Beneath

  718. that old

  719. wisdom,

  720. that old

  721. wisdom from

  722. below,

  723. was the

  724. fear and

  725. pride of

  726. how I

  727. looked before

  728. others,

  729. comparing

  730. myself to

  731. others,

  732. wanting to

  733. be better

  734. than others,

  735. wanting to

  736. be praised

  737. by others.

  738. But the

  739. wisdom from

  740. above is

  741. free of

  742. all that.

  743. It's

  744. pure.

  745. more.

  746. The other

  747. word that

  748. James gives

  749. for this

  750. kind of

  751. purity is

  752. found back

  753. in verse

  754. 13 where

  755. he calls

  756. it the

  757. meekness

  758. of wisdom.

  759. In the

  760. Old Testament,

  761. this word

  762. meekness does

  763. not mean

  764. cowardice or

  765. passivity.

  766. It means

  767. being set

  768. free from

  769. our anxious

  770. self-promotion.

  771. It means

  772. genuine

  773. humility.

  774. It means

  775. being free

  776. from our

  777. obsession

  778. with the

  779. self.

  780. Can you

  781. imagine

  782. living a

  783. life without

  784. the constant

  785. undercurrent of

  786. wanting to

  787. promote yourself?

  788. Without that

  789. constant anxiety

  790. of self-assessment

  791. and self-comparison

  792. and self-regard?

  793. Can you

  794. imagine a

  795. life lived

  796. rather,

  797. in the

  798. purity of

  799. genuine

  800. humility?

  801. Wouldn't

  802. that be

  803. wisdom

  804. indeed?

  805. To not

  806. be enslaved

  807. to your

  808. desire to

  809. be seen,

  810. to be praised,

  811. to be

  812. acknowledged,

  813. but release

  814. from all

  815. that to

  816. live a

  817. life of

  818. love

  819. toward

  820. others?

  821. Socrates

  822. apparently

  823. called

  824. jealousy

  825. an

  826. ulcer

  827. of the

  828. soul.

  829. Imagine

  830. the deep

  831. burning

  832. pain

  833. of

  834. self-interest

  835. at last

  836. being

  837. healed.

  838. What would

  839. that be

  840. like?

  841. Well,

  842. James says

  843. it's first

  844. pure,

  845. then it's

  846. peaceable.

  847. That's what

  848. it starts to

  849. look like.

  850. Freed from

  851. jealousy,

  852. we become

  853. peaceable.

  854. if the

  855. wisdom

  856. from

  857. below

  858. is

  859. characterized

  860. by selfish

  861. ambition

  862. of dividing

  863. and conquering,

  864. of trying

  865. to get

  866. the better

  867. of others,

  868. the wisdom

  869. from above

  870. is characterized

  871. by peace.

  872. But peace

  873. here doesn't

  874. mean merely

  875. the absence

  876. of fear

  877. or worry

  878. or conflict.

  879. Peace in the

  880. Bible means

  881. wholeness.

  882. It's the

  883. fabric of

  884. creation

  885. in all

  886. its right

  887. relationships

  888. flourishing

  889. together.

  890. To say

  891. then that

  892. wisdom

  893. is peaceable

  894. means that

  895. it is

  896. driven

  897. to make

  898. things whole

  899. again,

  900. to make

  901. things right

  902. again,

  903. to give

  904. birth to

  905. what the

  906. Hebrew Bible

  907. calls

  908. shalom.

  909. To mend

  910. this torn

  911. fabric of

  912. relationships,

  913. of communities,

  914. of creation.

  915. First pure,

  916. then peaceable.

  917. That's what

  918. true wisdom

  919. looked like.

  920. But you know

  921. in the short

  922. term,

  923. it often

  924. doesn't seem

  925. like it

  926. works,

  927. does it?

  928. A wisdom

  929. that is pure

  930. then peaceable

  931. doesn't often

  932. make a snappy

  933. headline.

  934. The work

  935. of peace

  936. doesn't often

  937. garner

  938. promotions,

  939. or win

  940. elections

  941. in the same

  942. way that

  943. jealousy and

  944. selfish ambition

  945. can.

  946. In fact,

  947. like Peter,

  948. we can sometimes

  949. look at the

  950. wisdom from

  951. above that's

  952. first pure

  953. then peaceable

  954. and say,

  955. that's not

  956. going to work,

  957. Jesus.

  958. This is the

  959. real world

  960. down here.

  961. But look at

  962. what James

  963. says in

  964. verse 18.

  965. verse 18.

  966. And a

  967. harvest of

  968. righteousness

  969. is sown in

  970. peace by

  971. those who

  972. make peace.

  973. A harvest

  974. of righteousness.

  975. righteousness.

  976. Have you

  977. ever been

  978. in a field

  979. or in

  980. an orchard

  981. maybe that's

  982. ready to

  983. harvest?

  984. My family

  985. likes to

  986. pick fruit

  987. at Bishop's

  988. Orchard up

  989. the shoreline.

  990. But here's

  991. the thing.

  992. If you look

  993. at an apple

  994. orchard out

  995. of season

  996. before the

  997. harvest,

  998. you might be

  999. a little

  1000. underwhelmed.

  1001. I remember

  1002. the first time

  1003. I went to

  1004. an orchard

  1005. and I

  1006. expected that

  1007. these massive

  1008. apples would

  1009. come from

  1010. massive trees,

  1011. right?

  1012. And I

  1013. showed up

  1014. and the

  1015. only thing

  1016. that was

  1017. planted

  1018. were these

  1019. like stubby

  1020. pruned back

  1021. kind of

  1022. things.

  1023. And I

  1024. thought,

  1025. what's

  1026. going to

  1027. come out

  1028. of that?

  1029. They're so

  1030. much shorter,

  1031. they're so

  1032. much smaller

  1033. than I

  1034. expected.

  1035. I had

  1036. crabapple

  1037. trees at

  1038. home that

  1039. are bigger

  1040. than that.

  1041. What's

  1042. going to

  1043. come of

  1044. that little

  1045. tree?

  1046. But then

  1047. the harvest

  1048. comes and

  1049. those seemingly

  1050. little trees

  1051. are covered

  1052. in fruit.

  1053. You see,

  1054. friends,

  1055. the wisdom

  1056. from above

  1057. is like that.

  1058. The wisdom

  1059. that's first

  1060. pure,

  1061. then peaceable,

  1062. it doesn't

  1063. seem like

  1064. much at

  1065. first.

  1066. It might

  1067. even seem

  1068. like a

  1069. losing

  1070. cause.

  1071. But a

  1072. harvest of

  1073. righteousness

  1074. is sown

  1075. in peace

  1076. by those

  1077. who make

  1078. peace.

  1079. It may

  1080. take time.

  1081. It may

  1082. seem like

  1083. there are

  1084. setbacks,

  1085. but the

  1086. harvest

  1087. will come.

  1088. I think

  1089. it's worth

  1090. asking then,

  1091. what kind

  1092. of church

  1093. do we

  1094. want to

  1095. be?

  1096. What kind

  1097. of church

  1098. do we

  1099. want to

  1100. see?

  1101. What kind

  1102. of families

  1103. and communities

  1104. do we

  1105. want to

  1106. see?

  1107. What kind

  1108. of city

  1109. do we

  1110. want to

  1111. see?

  1112. Do we

  1113. want to

  1114. see increasing

  1115. righteousness

  1116. and justice?

  1117. It doesn't

  1118. come through

  1119. worldly

  1120. wisdom.

  1121. It will

  1122. come as

  1123. we sow

  1124. peace and

  1125. make peace.

  1126. But keep

  1127. in mind,

  1128. being a

  1129. peacemaker

  1130. is different

  1131. than being a

  1132. peacekeeper.

  1133. Have you

  1134. heard that

  1135. distinction

  1136. before?

  1137. Some of you

  1138. have.

  1139. There's a

  1140. difference between

  1141. peacemaking and

  1142. peacekeeping.

  1143. keeping the

  1144. peace often

  1145. means avoiding

  1146. conflict,

  1147. appeasing

  1148. people,

  1149. supporting the

  1150. status quo,

  1151. not rocking

  1152. the boat.

  1153. That's not

  1154. what James

  1155. means.

  1156. That's not

  1157. what Jesus

  1158. means when

  1159. he says

  1160. blessed are

  1161. the peacemakers.

  1162. Peacemaking

  1163. means striving

  1164. for real

  1165. wholeness,

  1166. real shalom.

  1167. Peacemaking

  1168. means confrontation

  1169. at times.

  1170. Peacemaking

  1171. may mean,

  1172. as one writer

  1173. put it,

  1174. temporarily

  1175. disrupting a

  1176. community in

  1177. order to deal

  1178. with root

  1179. problems so

  1180. that genuine

  1181. peace may

  1182. ensue.

  1183. Sometimes a

  1184. friendship,

  1185. sometimes a

  1186. marriage,

  1187. sometimes a

  1188. church,

  1189. sometimes a

  1190. community needs

  1191. to be disrupted

  1192. in order to

  1193. deal with root

  1194. problems so

  1195. that genuine

  1196. peace can come.

  1197. peace can come

  1198. from the

  1199. people.

  1200. But remember,

  1201. even the

  1202. sometimes

  1203. confrontational

  1204. and disruptive

  1205. work of

  1206. peacemaking

  1207. is still done

  1208. in humility,

  1209. in purity,

  1210. and in love.

  1211. So these are

  1212. the two kinds

  1213. of wisdom

  1214. then.

  1215. Wisdom

  1216. from below

  1217. and wisdom

  1218. from above.

  1219. And James

  1220. has shown us

  1221. the nature

  1222. and the source

  1223. and the results

  1224. of each.

  1225. But you know,

  1226. before we leave

  1227. this passage,

  1228. I think we've

  1229. got to ask,

  1230. how do we get

  1231. that second

  1232. kind of wisdom?

  1233. How do we get

  1234. this wisdom

  1235. from above?

  1236. Because

  1237. oftentimes my

  1238. natural default

  1239. is the wisdom

  1240. from below.

  1241. Well,

  1242. first we need

  1243. to ask for it.

  1244. If any of you

  1245. lacks wisdom,

  1246. James writes

  1247. in chapter 1,

  1248. let him ask

  1249. God,

  1250. who gives

  1251. generously to

  1252. all without

  1253. reproach,

  1254. and it will

  1255. be given

  1256. to him.

  1257. We need

  1258. to ask

  1259. for it.

  1260. Of course

  1261. this makes

  1262. total sense,

  1263. right?

  1264. If the wisdom

  1265. from above

  1266. is God's

  1267. wisdom,

  1268. then we have

  1269. to go to

  1270. God to get

  1271. it.

  1272. We have

  1273. to be humble

  1274. enough to ask

  1275. for it

  1276. and realize

  1277. that we can't

  1278. produce it on

  1279. our own.

  1280. But, you know,

  1281. we can also

  1282. be bold

  1283. and confident

  1284. when we ask

  1285. for it

  1286. because God

  1287. promises to

  1288. give generously

  1289. to all

  1290. without reproach.

  1291. So we need

  1292. to ask for it.

  1293. We need to ask

  1294. for this wisdom

  1295. in prayer.

  1296. And second,

  1297. we need to

  1298. start practicing

  1299. it.

  1300. Remember,

  1301. wisdom isn't

  1302. just knowledge,

  1303. right?

  1304. It's living.

  1305. I don't know

  1306. if you've ever

  1307. driven a car

  1308. without power

  1309. steering,

  1310. or when

  1311. the power

  1312. steering

  1313. goes out.

  1314. My grandfather

  1315. had a very

  1316. old Buick

  1317. when I was

  1318. growing up

  1319. and sometimes

  1320. the power

  1321. steering

  1322. wouldn't always

  1323. work so well

  1324. in the Buick.

  1325. When the power

  1326. steering goes out

  1327. in your car,

  1328. it is almost

  1329. impossible

  1330. to turn the

  1331. wheel

  1332. when the car

  1333. isn't moving.

  1334. But once the

  1335. car starts

  1336. moving,

  1337. it gets a

  1338. whole lot

  1339. easier.

  1340. You see,

  1341. wisdom's kind

  1342. of like that.

  1343. Once the car

  1344. starts moving,

  1345. once we start

  1346. practicing what

  1347. we know,

  1348. then in the

  1349. living,

  1350. we grow more

  1351. and more

  1352. wise.

  1353. Now that can

  1354. be hard for

  1355. some of us.

  1356. Some of us

  1357. like to have

  1358. all the things

  1359. figured out

  1360. ahead of time.

  1361. We want to

  1362. know exactly

  1363. how and if

  1364. it will work.

  1365. But in order

  1366. to grow in

  1367. wisdom,

  1368. we need to

  1369. begin.

  1370. We need to

  1371. begin making

  1372. peace.

  1373. peace.

  1374. And little

  1375. by little,

  1376. you'll become

  1377. more and

  1378. more of a

  1379. peacemaker.

  1380. Because here's

  1381. what's going

  1382. to happen

  1383. once you

  1384. start living

  1385. into it.

  1386. For Christians,

  1387. the Holy Spirit

  1388. is going to

  1389. start showing

  1390. you when

  1391. you need

  1392. to be gentle,

  1393. when you

  1394. need to be

  1395. open to

  1396. reason,

  1397. when you

  1398. need to be

  1399. full of

  1400. mercy and

  1401. good fruits,

  1402. when you

  1403. need to be

  1404. impartial,

  1405. when you

  1406. need to be

  1407. particularly

  1408. sincere.

  1409. And the

  1410. Holy Spirit

  1411. is also going

  1412. to start

  1413. showing you

  1414. as you put

  1415. it into

  1416. practice,

  1417. where you

  1418. failed,

  1419. and where

  1420. you need to

  1421. seek forgiveness

  1422. and try

  1423. again.

  1424. You know,

  1425. a good

  1426. practice is

  1427. to end

  1428. every day,

  1429. or to end

  1430. most days,

  1431. with a few

  1432. minutes of

  1433. prayer.

  1434. End every

  1435. day with a

  1436. few minutes

  1437. of prayer,

  1438. asking the

  1439. Spirit to

  1440. guide your

  1441. thoughts over

  1442. the previous

  1443. day.

  1444. Invite the

  1445. Holy Spirit

  1446. to come and

  1447. just think

  1448. with you,

  1449. to lead your

  1450. thoughts over

  1451. the previous

  1452. day.

  1453. you've just

  1454. lived.

  1455. And then

  1456. ask Him to

  1457. show you

  1458. where you've

  1459. been responding

  1460. to His

  1461. leading.

  1462. And to

  1463. give thanks

  1464. for that.

  1465. To give

  1466. thanks for

  1467. when the

  1468. Spirit gave

  1469. you some

  1470. of these

  1471. gifts of

  1472. peacemaking

  1473. and gentleness

  1474. and openness

  1475. to reason,

  1476. etc.

  1477. And then

  1478. ask the

  1479. Holy Spirit

  1480. to show you

  1481. where you

  1482. didn't respond

  1483. so well.

  1484. And confess

  1485. that.

  1486. And then

  1487. pray for

  1488. His leading

  1489. and His

  1490. power for

  1491. the coming

  1492. day to

  1493. help you

  1494. keep in

  1495. step with

  1496. Him,

  1497. to keep

  1498. in step

  1499. with the

  1500. Spirit.

  1501. You know,

  1502. if we're

  1503. practicing

  1504. that kind

  1505. of prayer,

  1506. that's going

  1507. to help

  1508. us grow

  1509. in the

  1510. practice

  1511. of

  1512. peacemaking.

  1513. So we

  1514. need to

  1515. ask for

  1516. it.

  1517. And we

  1518. need to

  1519. begin

  1520. practicing

  1521. it.

  1522. But the

  1523. last thing,

  1524. we need

  1525. to receive

  1526. it.

  1527. Here's what

  1528. I mean.

  1529. You see,

  1530. the wisdom

  1531. from above

  1532. is first

  1533. of all

  1534. pure,

  1535. James

  1536. says.

  1537. And there's

  1538. only one

  1539. way for

  1540. foolish and

  1541. flawed people

  1542. like us

  1543. to be

  1544. pure.

  1545. there's

  1546. only one

  1547. way to

  1548. be liberated

  1549. from the

  1550. jealousy that

  1551. wants to

  1552. look better

  1553. than others.

  1554. There's

  1555. only one

  1556. way to

  1557. be set

  1558. free from

  1559. the selfish

  1560. ambition that

  1561. wants to

  1562. get the

  1563. better of

  1564. others.

  1565. The only

  1566. way to

  1567. be set

  1568. free from

  1569. all of

  1570. that is

  1571. through what

  1572. God has

  1573. done in

  1574. Jesus.

  1575. You see,

  1576. Jesus was

  1577. the one who

  1578. was truly

  1579. wise.

  1580. in him

  1581. are hidden

  1582. all the

  1583. treasures of

  1584. wisdom and

  1585. knowledge,

  1586. Paul writes

  1587. in Colossians.

  1588. You know,

  1589. read the

  1590. Gospels for

  1591. yourself and

  1592. you will

  1593. find that

  1594. James'

  1595. kind of

  1596. impressionistic

  1597. portrait here

  1598. in verse 17,

  1599. pure,

  1600. peaceable,

  1601. gentle,

  1602. open to

  1603. reason,

  1604. full of

  1605. mercy and

  1606. good fruits,

  1607. impartial,

  1608. sincere.

  1609. It's really

  1610. the portrait

  1611. of Christ.

  1612. And only

  1613. when we see

  1614. what Jesus

  1615. did for us

  1616. will we

  1617. be set free

  1618. from jealousy

  1619. and ambition.

  1620. Only when you

  1621. see how much

  1622. he loved

  1623. you,

  1624. dying on

  1625. the cross,

  1626. the wise

  1627. one dying

  1628. for the

  1629. foolish,

  1630. when you

  1631. see that,

  1632. that he did

  1633. that for

  1634. you and

  1635. that he

  1636. loves you,

  1637. then you

  1638. won't need

  1639. so much to

  1640. look better

  1641. before others

  1642. anymore.

  1643. And when

  1644. you see him

  1645. rising again

  1646. in victory

  1647. over sin

  1648. and death

  1649. for you,

  1650. well,

  1651. suddenly that

  1652. releases you

  1653. from the

  1654. need to

  1655. get the

  1656. better of

  1657. others.

  1658. Because in

  1659. him,

  1660. through his

  1661. death and

  1662. resurrection,

  1663. no matter how

  1664. sinful or

  1665. broken you

  1666. might be,

  1667. in him,

  1668. you're pure.

  1669. In him,

  1670. you are

  1671. victorious.

  1672. In him,

  1673. you're seated

  1674. with him

  1675. in the right

  1676. hand,

  1677. at the right

  1678. hand of

  1679. the Father.

  1680. And when

  1681. you start

  1682. living like

  1683. all of that

  1684. is true,

  1685. when you

  1686. start living

  1687. united to

  1688. Christ through

  1689. faith,

  1690. knowing that

  1691. his death

  1692. has cleansed

  1693. you and

  1694. his resurrection

  1695. has rescued

  1696. you,

  1697. then we'll

  1698. start to be

  1699. truly wise

  1700. with the

  1701. wisdom from

  1702. above.

  1703. Proverbs 13,

  1704. 20 says,

  1705. whoever walks

  1706. with the wise

  1707. becomes wise.

  1708. Whoever walks

  1709. with the wise

  1710. becomes wise.

  1711. So,

  1712. friends,

  1713. if Jesus is

  1714. the ultimately

  1715. wise one,

  1716. the one in

  1717. whom all the

  1718. treasures of

  1719. wisdom and

  1720. knowledge are

  1721. found,

  1722. then only

  1723. by trusting

  1724. and walking

  1725. with him

  1726. and receiving

  1727. it from him

  1728. will we

  1729. become truly

  1730. wise.

  1731. Let's pray.

  1732. Lord Jesus,

  1733. what a

  1734. convicting

  1735. passage this

  1736. is for us.

  1737. Lord,

  1738. too often

  1739. our wisdom

  1740. is characterized

  1741. by selfish

  1742. ambition and

  1743. jealousy.

  1744. Would you

  1745. forgive us

  1746. for that

  1747. this morning?

  1748. would you

  1749. expose in

  1750. our hearts

  1751. where that

  1752. is true

  1753. and we

  1754. don't see

  1755. it?

  1756. And,

  1757. Jesus,

  1758. would you

  1759. forgive our

  1760. pride that

  1761. wants to

  1762. try to do

  1763. it on our

  1764. own?

  1765. And would

  1766. you humble

  1767. us by your

  1768. spirit and

  1769. teach us to

  1770. ask and

  1771. to act and

  1772. to receive?

  1773. Lord,

  1774. would you

  1775. make us a

  1776. people that

  1777. are wise with

  1778. the wisdom

  1779. from above?

  1780. Make us

  1781. pure and

  1782. peaceable.

  1783. Lord,

  1784. we long to

  1785. see a

  1786. harvest of

  1787. righteousness.

  1788. Rebuke us

  1789. when our

  1790. means are

  1791. from below.

  1792. Help us to

  1793. be peacemakers

  1794. with the wisdom

  1795. from above,

  1796. we pray.

  1797. Amen.
