  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Turn with me in your Bibles, if you have a Bible, to the book of James.

  3. We're looking at James chapter 5, verses 13 through 18.

    James 5:13–18

  4. This summer we've been going through this very practical book written by the brother

  5. of Jesus himself, who was the leader of the early church in Jerusalem, and we're coming

  6. to the end of it.

  7. So let me read James chapter 5, verses 13 through 18 this morning.

    James 5:13–18

  8. Is anyone among you suffering?

  9. Let him pray.

  10. Is anyone cheerful?

  11. Let him sing praise.

  12. Is anyone among you sick?

  13. Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with

  14. oil in the name of the Lord.

  15. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up.

  16. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

  17. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another that you may be healed.

  18. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

  19. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain.

  20. And for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.

  21. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

  22. I'm just going to say up front, I was outside all day yesterday.

  23. It was dusty, and I have allergies.

  24. So, just to hopefully reassure you.

  25. Moving on.

  26. The sermon is about prayer.

  27. Over the years, I've had several conversations with people who have come to Trinity from all

  28. different parts of this country and all over the world.

  29. And many people have shared with me about other churches that they've been part of in

  30. other places and how God has ministered to them and helped them through other churches that

  31. they've been part of in other places.

  32. And many people, especially, I've noticed a pattern that many people, especially from other

  33. parts of the world, have mentioned how important prayer is to their churches back home.

  34. So, in Korea, many churches have early morning prayer at 5 or 6 a.m. every weekday.

  35. That's a common thing.

  36. Many people attend these daily early morning prayer meetings.

  37. In Africa, many churches meet to pray and worship for hours on end, multiple times a week.

  38. In this church, for several years, we've had a ministry to Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrants.

  39. They worship in the Amharic language.

  40. And they often, I would say, at least a few times a year, they set aside a day or even a whole week

  41. where they encourage the whole church to fast and pray.

  42. And when they do that, they usually set up prayer three times a day, morning, noon, and night.

  43. They do it over a conference call because they live all over Connecticut.

  44. But that's just a normal, a pretty regular thing that they do.

  45. And sometimes, as I've been talking with our brothers and sisters in Christ who've come to Trinity

  46. or come to the United States from other parts of the world, they'll ask me a question.

  47. Now, almost nobody asked it directly.

  48. But the question that they basically ask is,

  49. do American Christians really feel like they need to pray?

  50. Or why don't Christians here seem to value prayer that much?

  51. And again, very few people say that directly,

  52. but many people over the years have raised that concern with me in one form or another.

  53. Now, we could say a few things.

  54. I sometimes say that, you know, we can't completely measure our attitude toward prayer

  55. by the number and length of organized prayer meetings each week

  56. or even by the length of our own personal prayer time, right?

  57. Jesus warned his disciples not to heap up empty words in prayer

  58. or think that they'll be heard for their many words.

  59. And at Trinity, we try not to over-program our life together,

  60. even when we're not in the midst of a pandemic

  61. and a lot of the things we normally do we can't do.

  62. Or have to limit in other ways.

  63. But we try not to over-program our church life, right?

  64. We don't want people to feel like I have to be at church every single night of the week

  65. for something or other.

  66. We try to integrate prayer into the rest of the things that we do.

  67. But even with all those caveats,

  68. I think that our brothers and sisters in Christ

  69. who have raised this question

  70. and expressed this concern

  71. are noticing a real problem,

  72. a real issue.

  73. For many of us, if we're honest,

  74. prayer is not the engine that drives our spiritual lives.

  75. Instead, it's more like an afterthought.

  76. We sometimes get to it, sometimes don't.

  77. We don't always feel much of a need to pray.

  78. Some of us might say,

  79. well, you know, I've tried to understand how prayer works.

  80. I mean, if God knows everything in advance

  81. and He sovereignly orders our lives,

  82. then He's going to do what He's going to do anyway.

  83. Like, why do I have to pray?

  84. But here's the thing.

  85. Even if we don't completely understand

  86. all the mysteries of prayer,

  87. there are all kinds of things that we use

  88. and benefit from every day

  89. that we don't mostly understand how they work.

  90. Right?

  91. Most of us, we go to the doctor

  92. and the doctor prescribes some medications.

  93. Okay, 10 to 20% of you out there

  94. are in the health professional field.

  95. You might understand it,

  96. but the other 80, 90% of us don't.

  97. At least, we don't really understand

  98. how all the chemical reactions work.

  99. Right?

  100. In depth.

  101. But we still take the medicine.

  102. And most of us don't really fully understand

  103. how our car engines work.

  104. But we still get in cars

  105. or ride buses

  106. and benefit from them.

  107. Right?

  108. We use and benefit from all kinds of things

  109. that we don't completely understand.

  110. And so why not with prayer?

  111. The passage we're looking at today

  112. does not explain all the mysteries of prayer,

  113. but it calls us to be people of prayer.

  114. As we've said throughout this series,

  115. the book of James was written to people

  116. who are experiencing trials of various kinds.

  117. And really one of the questions James is addressing is,

  118. how do we not just survive,

  119. but thrive spiritually through trials?

  120. And James begins and ends

  121. with two themes.

  122. The themes of patience and prayer.

  123. So beginning in chapter one,

  124. one of the first things he says is,

  125. let steadfastness finish its work

  126. so that you may become mature and complete.

  127. Patience.

  128. Right?

  129. Hanging in there.

  130. Persevering.

  131. And prayer.

  132. At the beginning,

  133. James says,

  134. if any of you lacks wisdom,

  135. let him ask God.

  136. And again,

  137. last week we looked at patience.

  138. And patience doesn't just mean being passive

  139. and not doing anything.

  140. It means actively trusting

  141. and waiting upon the Lord

  142. and sowing to the future,

  143. but waiting for God to do what only he can do.

  144. And today we're looking at prayer.

  145. Patience and prayer, of course, go together.

  146. Right?

  147. It's hard to sustain a life of patience

  148. apart from prayer.

  149. So what we'll see today

  150. is the importance of prayer

  151. for different people

  152. facing different circumstances.

  153. We'll see first,

  154. in verse 13,

  155. individual believers

  156. praying through life's ups and downs.

  157. Second,

  158. verse 14 and 15,

  159. we'll see the church elders

  160. praying for those in special need.

  161. Third,

  162. verse 16,

  163. we'll see fellow Christians

  164. praying for one another

  165. as we confess sins.

  166. And four,

  167. verse 17 and 18,

  168. we'll see the power of prayer

  169. in all circumstances.

  170. So first,

  171. individual believers

  172. praying through life's ups and downs.

  173. Is anyone among you suffering?

  174. Let him pray.

  175. Is anyone cheerful?

  176. Let him sing praise.

  177. The pronouns in this verse

  178. are all singular.

  179. Right?

  180. So James is speaking

  181. to every one of us individually.

  182. And he uses two words

  183. that cover the whole range

  184. of human emotions.

  185. Suffering,

  186. which literally

  187. could be translated

  188. feeling bad.

  189. Right?

  190. Some of us might be feeling bad.

  191. We're in pain

  192. or we're afflicted

  193. or troubled

  194. or anxious.

  195. And James says,

  196. pray.

  197. And the next word he uses

  198. is cheerful.

  199. Right?

  200. It's a word that means

  201. confident,

  202. enthusiastic,

  203. happy.

  204. And James says,

  205. if that's where you are,

  206. sing praise.

  207. Right?

  208. Some of us pray

  209. when we're suffering.

  210. Right?

  211. When we hit a crisis.

  212. That's what really

  213. drives us to pray.

  214. God, help me.

  215. I really need you.

  216. But then once we're feeling better,

  217. we get complacent

  218. and we just,

  219. our prayer life dwindles.

  220. Others of us

  221. might be the reverse.

  222. Right?

  223. Maybe you love to sing

  224. praise songs.

  225. Maybe you just

  226. thank God every day

  227. for your food

  228. and the daily blessings

  229. that he gives us.

  230. But then when

  231. life really goes bad,

  232. maybe that's where

  233. you struggle

  234. to pray.

  235. Right?

  236. To be honest with God

  237. in the seasons

  238. of disappointment,

  239. to talk with,

  240. to submit to the Lord

  241. when we

  242. maybe don't

  243. like how things

  244. are shaking out

  245. for us.

  246. Right?

  247. But whether we're

  248. feeling bad

  249. or feeling great,

  250. our faith in God

  251. is being tested.

  252. In both situations,

  253. the temptation

  254. is to retreat

  255. into ourselves

  256. and our feelings.

  257. Right?

  258. Either retreating

  259. into our bad feelings

  260. and just sitting there

  261. in our own cave.

  262. Right?

  263. Or to retreat

  264. into our good feelings

  265. and become very

  266. self-satisfied

  267. and self-focused

  268. and all about

  269. self-fulfillment

  270. and that's all about

  271. what our life

  272. sort of revolves around.

  273. But James says,

  274. no, in both of these

  275. circumstances,

  276. in both of these feelings,

  277. there's an invitation

  278. from God

  279. to bring our emotions

  280. before him.

  281. Prayer helps us,

  282. one person said,

  283. prayer helps us

  284. to sanctify our pleasures

  285. and consecrate

  286. our pains.

  287. And let me just say,

  288. prayer doesn't come

  289. completely naturally

  290. to any of us.

  291. Right?

  292. All of us

  293. are still learning

  294. to pray.

  295. And we'll all be

  296. learning to pray

  297. until the day

  298. we see Jesus

  299. face to face.

  300. The one who

  301. our prayers

  302. are ultimately

  303. directed towards.

  304. But one of the best ways

  305. to learn to pray

  306. in all circumstances

  307. is to spend time

  308. in the biblical book

  309. of Psalms.

  310. Now the Psalms speak

  311. out of all kinds

  312. of outward circumstances

  313. and inward emotions.

  314. There are Psalms of Lament.

  315. About a third of the Psalms

  316. fall in this category.

  317. The Psalmist is

  318. crying out in agony,

  319. troubled by uncertainty,

  320. oppressed by enemies,

  321. betrayed by friends.

  322. And on the other hand,

  323. there are Psalms of Praise

  324. where the Psalmist is

  325. filled with gratitude

  326. and overcome with wonder

  327. and dancing for joy.

  328. And the Psalms help us

  329. to put,

  330. to verbalize

  331. our prayers

  332. and praises

  333. in all the seasons

  334. of life,

  335. in all the seasons

  336. of our soul.

  337. Back in the 4th century,

  338. the Egyptian church leader

  339. Athanasius wrote

  340. a treatise on the Psalms.

  341. And it's a great,

  342. it's not that long.

  343. You can find it online

  344. if you just look for

  345. Athanasius on the Psalms.

  346. And he wrote this.

  347. This is part of what he wrote.

  348. He said,

  349. in the Psalter,

  350. in the Psalms,

  351. you learn about yourself.

  352. You find depicted in it

  353. all the movements

  354. of your soul,

  355. all its changes,

  356. its ups and downs,

  357. its failures and recoveries.

  358. Moreover,

  359. whatever your particular

  360. need or trouble,

  361. from this same book

  362. you can select

  363. a form of words

  364. to fit it

  365. so that you learn

  366. the way to remedy

  367. your ill.

  368. He says,

  369. you can take its words

  370. upon your lips

  371. as if they were your own.

  372. You see,

  373. the Psalms can teach us

  374. how to pray

  375. over the course

  376. of our lives.

  377. Some people have said

  378. that the people

  379. who appreciate the Psalms most

  380. are elderly people

  381. who have been through

  382. a wide range

  383. of life's experiences.

  384. Because,

  385. you know,

  386. sometimes you'll read a Psalm

  387. and you'll think,

  388. boy,

  389. the Psalmist is really angry here.

  390. Or,

  391. you'll read a Psalm

  392. and think,

  393. the Psalmist is so happy

  394. and I'm not there.

  395. Or,

  396. he expresses this pure

  397. trust in the Lord

  398. and I'm struggling.

  399. Right?

  400. So,

  401. but you see,

  402. the Psalms are teaching us.

  403. Teaching us to pray

  404. over the course of our lives

  405. and so,

  406. many people who have been,

  407. who have walked with the Lord

  408. for a long time

  409. and walked with the Psalms

  410. for a long time

  411. have come to treasure them

  412. more and more

  413. because they help us

  414. put into words

  415. our prayers

  416. in all circumstances.

  417. So,

  418. that's the first thing.

  419. Our individual prayers

  420. help us remain steady

  421. and seeking the Lord

  422. through life's ups and downs.

  423. Second theme,

  424. verse 14 and 15,

  425. James talks about

  426. the elders' prayer

  427. for those in special need.

  428. Is anyone among you sick?

  429. Let him call

  430. for the elders

  431. of the church.

  432. Now,

  433. James uses two different words

  434. in verse 14

  435. and verse 15,

  436. both of which

  437. are translated sick.

  438. The word in verse 14

  439. can be translated

  440. either sick or weak.

  441. So,

  442. in other places

  443. in the Bible,

  444. the same word

  445. refers to people

  446. who were blind,

  447. lame,

  448. paralyzed,

  449. frail,

  450. needy,

  451. or weakened by old age.

  452. The word in verse 15

  453. has a sense of being

  454. weary and worn out.

  455. So,

  456. you know,

  457. think about that

  458. sort of

  459. set of ideas,

  460. right?

  461. Being sick

  462. or weak,

  463. weary,

  464. or worn out.

  465. In this passage,

  466. James seems to be

  467. envisioning a situation

  468. where someone is

  469. pretty seriously

  470. sick or weak,

  471. right?

  472. Possibly even bedridden,

  473. right?

  474. He doesn't say

  475. go to the elders.

  476. He says call for the elders.

  477. In other words,

  478. the elders are going to

  479. come to you

  480. because you can't

  481. go to them,

  482. right?

  483. Perhaps someone's even

  484. confined to bed,

  485. right?

  486. They can't leave their house

  487. or the hospital.

  488. And when somebody

  489. is sick or weak,

  490. weary or worn out,

  491. whether it's physically,

  492. emotionally,

  493. or mentally,

  494. or spiritually,

  495. they can easily

  496. become disconnected

  497. from the Lord

  498. and from the rest

  499. of the church body.

  500. And so,

  501. James tells them

  502. call upon the leaders

  503. of the local church body

  504. to come and pray

  505. over them

  506. so their connection

  507. with the Lord

  508. is not weakened,

  509. but rather strengthened,

  510. right?

  511. Their trust in the Lord

  512. can be not weakened,

  513. but rather strengthened

  514. through this trial.

  515. And James says

  516. the elders should pray

  517. anointing the sick person

  518. with oil

  519. in the name of the Lord.

  520. Now,

  521. oil isn't magic.

  522. The book of Acts

  523. records some,

  524. several instances

  525. where people were healed

  526. through prayer

  527. and God's miraculous work

  528. apart from any oil.

  529. But oil was a symbolic act

  530. of setting someone apart

  531. for God's special attention

  532. and care.

  533. Throughout the scriptures,

  534. oil is a symbol

  535. of the Holy Spirit's

  536. presence and power.

  537. So,

  538. the elders in anointing

  539. someone with oil

  540. are very powerfully

  541. reminding them

  542. that God's Holy Spirit

  543. is with you

  544. and upon you

  545. and here with us

  546. as we bring you

  547. before the Lord.

  548. Just like people would

  549. bring people

  550. before Jesus

  551. like the four men

  552. brought their paralyzed

  553. friend to Jesus,

  554. right?

  555. And lowered him down

  556. through the roof,

  557. right?

  558. That's what the elders

  559. are doing in a situation

  560. like this.

  561. It's bringing the sick person

  562. before the merciful Savior.

  563. So, let me say to you,

  564. right,

  565. for those of you

  566. who I can see here,

  567. right,

  568. you're all well enough

  569. to come out to church,

  570. right?

  571. And many of you at home

  572. are still able to,

  573. you know,

  574. go for a walk,

  575. get outside of your house,

  576. right?

  577. But if you,

  578. let me say,

  579. you might become

  580. seriously ill someday.

  581. Weak, weary,

  582. worn out.

  583. Maybe it's an acute

  584. and life-threatening illness.

  585. Maybe it's a chronic condition

  586. that just wears you down

  587. over time.

  588. And if,

  589. especially if you find yourself

  590. becoming more and more

  591. disconnected

  592. from the rest

  593. of the church body

  594. because of

  595. your illness

  596. or weakness,

  597. do what this verse says.

  598. Call for the elders

  599. of the church.

  600. We will come

  601. and pray with you.

  602. If we can't come right away,

  603. we'll pray,

  604. or, you know,

  605. if we're prohibited

  606. from coming

  607. because the hospital

  608. isn't allowing visitors

  609. at the point,

  610. we'll pray with you

  611. over the phone

  612. at the very least.

  613. Right?

  614. Some sicknesses

  615. are so debilitating

  616. that it becomes

  617. hard to think

  618. and hard to even

  619. put a sentence

  620. of prayer

  621. into words.

  622. Sometimes the mental fog

  623. is completely overwhelming.

  624. Right?

  625. And you,

  626. and it's,

  627. and it,

  628. it's hard to even

  629. pray for yourself.

  630. That's where you need

  631. to ask others

  632. to come

  633. and pray

  634. with and for

  635. you.

  636. So let me encourage

  637. you to,

  638. to,

  639. to ask

  640. for prayer.

  641. Don't be too proud

  642. to ask for prayer

  643. when you really need it.

  644. In verse 13,

  645. verse 15,

  646. sorry,

  647. we see the result

  648. of the elder's prayer.

  649. The prayer of faith

  650. will save the one

  651. who is sick

  652. and the Lord

  653. will raise him up.

  654. And if he has

  655. committed sins,

  656. he will be forgiven.

  657. Now,

  658. this verse

  659. raises a few questions.

  660. So let me address

  661. three of them

  662. before we go on.

  663. First,

  664. what is the prayer

  665. of faith?

  666. Some people say

  667. that this is a special

  668. kind of prayer

  669. where God

  670. on certain occasions

  671. gives his people

  672. a special kind

  673. of faith

  674. to confidently believe

  675. that the sick person

  676. will be physically healed

  677. in response

  678. to that prayer.

  679. But you know,

  680. that's not how

  681. James describes

  682. faith

  683. in other places.

  684. Whenever James

  685. talks about faith,

  686. he's not talking

  687. about confidently

  688. expecting a certain

  689. outcome.

  690. He's talking

  691. about confidently

  692. trusting the character

  693. of God.

  694. You see,

  695. when we put our faith

  696. in outcomes,

  697. we may be disappointed.

  698. We may become

  699. very disillusioned.

  700. But when we place

  701. our faith

  702. in the character

  703. of God,

  704. even when the outcome

  705. may or may not

  706. be what we want,

  707. God is still there.

  708. And he's still with us.

  709. And he always is

  710. who he always has been.

  711. Now,

  712. if you look back

  713. at chapter 1,

  714. verse 6,

  715. James uses a similar phrase.

  716. He says,

  717. if you lack wisdom,

  718. ask God in faith

  719. with no doubting.

  720. And we explained

  721. that phrase back then

  722. when we looked

  723. at that passage.

  724. But what James means

  725. there is

  726. ask in faith,

  727. in trust,

  728. trusting God's generosity

  729. and goodness.

  730. And with no doubting.

  731. That means not wavering

  732. in our loyalty to him.

  733. We might feel

  734. uncertainty, of course,

  735. and worry at times.

  736. But James says,

  737. don't be double-minded.

  738. Right?

  739. Don't waver

  740. in your loyalty

  741. to the Lord.

  742. But ask God,

  743. trusting his generosity

  744. and goodness.

  745. So,

  746. the prayer of faith here,

  747. I think,

  748. means trusting

  749. that God will hear our prayer

  750. and give us,

  751. whether it's wisdom

  752. or healing

  753. or whatever it is

  754. that he knows

  755. we truly need.

  756. So,

  757. I think that's

  758. the prayer of faith.

  759. Second question,

  760. what does it mean

  761. that the sick person

  762. will be saved

  763. and raised up

  764. by the Lord?

  765. Now,

  766. some people say

  767. this is a promise

  768. of physical healing

  769. as long as we pray

  770. in faith.

  771. And then,

  772. if we don't see

  773. physical healing,

  774. then maybe we didn't pray

  775. with faith

  776. or with the right kind of faith.

  777. But again,

  778. that's not what James says here.

  779. At the end of chapter 4,

  780. James has already reminded us

  781. that our lives

  782. and our circumstances

  783. are in the Lord's hands.

  784. He says,

  785. we should say,

  786. if it is the Lord's will,

  787. we will live

  788. and do this or that.

  789. So,

  790. our plans

  791. and our prayers

  792. are ultimately subject

  793. to God's sovereign will.

  794. And here,

  795. in verse,

  796. chapter 5,

  797. verse 15,

  798. James uses two verbs,

  799. save and raise up,

  800. that can mean

  801. a whole range of things.

  802. Sometimes,

  803. those verses refer to

  804. someone being physically healed

  805. or made whole

  806. or getting up out of bed.

  807. But those verbs

  808. can also have

  809. a spiritual

  810. and an eternal sense.

  811. In fact,

  812. James uses the word save

  813. in four other places

  814. in the book

  815. and they all refer

  816. to eternal salvation.

  817. Right?

  818. Someone being right

  819. with God,

  820. being rescued

  821. by God forever.

  822. So,

  823. what does this mean?

  824. The Lord will save

  825. and raise up

  826. the sick person.

  827. I think

  828. we need to let the Lord

  829. in every circumstance

  830. define

  831. precisely how

  832. and when

  833. he chooses

  834. to save

  835. and to heal,

  836. to raise up

  837. and to renew

  838. his sick

  839. and weak

  840. and weary

  841. children

  842. whom he dearly loves.

  843. Right?

  844. Sometimes,

  845. God answers prayers

  846. with physical healing

  847. even immediately

  848. and there are people

  849. who can legitimately

  850. testify to that

  851. and we can pray boldly

  852. for that.

  853. We don't have to apologize

  854. about praying

  855. for physical healing.

  856. But God also answers prayers

  857. by giving emotional healing

  858. or resilience

  859. that we,

  860. bringing us through

  861. a hard situation

  862. that we never thought

  863. we could make it through

  864. or restoring

  865. broken relationships.

  866. I've seen examples

  867. where relationships

  868. that had been broken

  869. or estranged

  870. for years

  871. were reconciled

  872. and strengthened

  873. through someone's

  874. physical illness

  875. or giving renewed

  876. spiritual insight

  877. and vitality.

  878. Right?

  879. God sometimes answers

  880. our prayers

  881. in all kinds of ways

  882. that aren't always

  883. what we would expect

  884. but any and all

  885. of those

  886. are reasons

  887. to praise God.

  888. This week we sent out

  889. a written reflection

  890. to the church email list

  891. from Rick Schneider

  892. who Matt prayed for

  893. earlier in the service.

  894. Rick has been at home

  895. with ALS

  896. for almost two years now.

  897. So some of you

  898. may know him

  899. but some of you

  900. may not know him

  901. if you've come to the church

  902. more recently especially.

  903. And the elders of Trinity

  904. have done exactly

  905. what this passage says.

  906. We've gone to his house,

  907. we've anointed him with oil,

  908. we've prayed over him,

  909. we've actually done so

  910. multiple times

  911. and many others

  912. have prayed for

  913. and with him as well.

  914. And the Lord so far

  915. has not healed him of ALS

  916. but the Lord has responded

  917. to our prayers

  918. and the prayers of many

  919. for him.

  920. Let me just share

  921. an excerpt

  922. from what Rick wrote

  923. recently.

  924. You can read the whole thing

  925. if you got it

  926. through the church email list

  927. or ask us for it

  928. if you didn't.

  929. He wrote this

  930. a couple weeks ago.

  931. He said,

  932. Recently I heard about

  933. a major breakthrough

  934. in ALS treatments.

  935. I was encouraged to think

  936. that maybe this would be

  937. the way the Lord

  938. might free me

  939. from this pestilence.

  940. But I also was surprised

  941. to realize

  942. that my own hope

  943. did not seem to waver

  944. or change

  945. even after I discovered

  946. that the treatment

  947. probably wouldn't apply

  948. to my own specific type

  949. of ALS.

  950. And then I realized

  951. that this hope within me

  952. that seems to have been produced

  953. over this last year

  954. has almost nothing to do

  955. with the certainty

  956. of my healing

  957. whether that is here

  958. or in eternity.

  959. Instead I realized

  960. that I am more and more

  961. certain that God's love

  962. will still be alive

  963. in my heart tomorrow.

  964. That is a new sort

  965. of hope for me.

  966. Much of my life

  967. I've been amazed

  968. at God's gracious

  969. and loving work

  970. in saving me

  971. and giving me a wife

  972. and family

  973. and working some amazing

  974. miracles in our ministry.

  975. But I have always been

  976. tempted to think

  977. that someday

  978. maybe that love

  979. would grow cold.

  980. My love would grow cold.

  981. And now I realize

  982. that my hope

  983. is not in any

  984. of these miraculous works

  985. or in the history

  986. of God's faithfulness

  987. to me

  988. but it really is

  989. in the fact

  990. that he will be

  991. faithful tomorrow.

  992. And in every tomorrow

  993. after that

  994. no matter what

  995. comes along.

  996. The prayer of faith

  997. will save the one

  998. who is sick

  999. and the Lord

  1000. will raise him up.

  1001. And the end

  1002. of the verse says

  1003. if he's committed sins

  1004. he'll be forgiven.

1005. Well that's the last question

1006. I want to deal with

  1007. before we go on

  1008. to the next verse.

  1009. What's the connection

  1010. James is making

  1011. between sickness

  1012. and sin?

  1013. Now not every sickness

1014. is a result of sin

  1015. that's why James says

  1016. if.

  1017. On the other hand

  1018. some sicknesses

  1019. are directly connected

  1020. to specific sins

  1021. otherwise James

  1022. wouldn't make this

  1023. comment at all.

  1024. And if our sinful

  1025. patterns have contributed

  1026. to our physical

  1027. illness or weakness

  1028. we shouldn't ignore

  1029. those sinful patterns.

1030. We need to face them

  1031. and deal with them.

  1032. In fact sometimes

  1033. dealing with our

  1034. sinful habits

  1035. is even harder

  1036. than dealing

  1037. with the unpleasant

  1038. symptoms of a physical

  1039. illness.

  1040. But this verse

  1041. gives us a great

  1042. encouragement.

  1043. Even if our

  1044. physical illness

  1045. is completely

  1046. the result

  1047. of our foolish

  1048. choices

  1049. or ungodly

  1050. habits

  1051. we can come

  1052. boldly to Jesus

  1053. who is merciful

  1054. and mighty

  1055. to save.

  1056. His power

  1057. is sufficient

  1058. not only to heal

  1059. our broken bodies

  1060. but to forgive

  1061. our sins

  1062. and save

  1063. our souls.

  1064. See Jesus

  1065. didn't just come

  1066. to heal people

  1067. who get sick

  1068. through no fault

  1069. of their own.

  1070. He came to heal

  1071. and save

  1072. and show mercy

  1073. to guilty

  1074. sinners

  1075. like us.

  1076. And that

  1077. is good

  1078. news.

  1079. We can come

  1080. boldly

  1081. before him

  1082. and pray for

  1083. all these things.

  1084. And that leads us

  1085. to our third point.

  1086. Right?

  1087. We've seen individuals

  1088. praying through

  1089. life's ups and downs.

  1090. We've seen the elders

  1091. praying for those

  1092. in special need.

  1093. Third,

  1094. we see fellow

  1095. Christians praying

  1096. for each other

  1097. as we confess sins.

  1098. Confess your sins

  1099. to one another

1100. and pray for one another

1101. that you may be healed.

  1102. James is going

  1103. from specifically

  1104. focusing on the elders

  1105. praying for those

  1106. in special need

  1107. to generally focusing

  1108. on any Christian

  1109. praying for

  1110. any other Christian.

  1111. And not just

  1112. the sick person

  1113. who has sinned

  1114. can be forgiven

  1115. but any Christian

  1116. who has sinned

  1117. can be forgiven

  1118. through confession

  1119. and prayer.

  1120. So James' assumption

  1121. here is that

  1122. Christians will

  1123. sometimes sin.

  1124. Right?

  1125. And he's telling us

1126. how to deal with it.

  1127. And the right way

  1128. to deal with sin

  1129. is by acknowledging

1130. it for what it is

  1131. and receiving prayer

  1132. so that we are

  1133. freed from

  1134. its toxic influences.

  1135. Right?

  1136. Now what does this

  1137. look like practically?

  1138. James doesn't spell out

  1139. the details of what

  1140. this looks like

  1141. but from other

  1142. biblical passages

  1143. we can flesh this

  1144. out a bit.

  1145. So what might this

  1146. look like

  1147. if we have wronged

  1148. another Christian?

  1149. Right?

  1150. So example.

  1151. Chapter 1 James says

  1152. we should be quick

  1153. to listen,

  1154. slow to speak,

1155. and slow to get angry.

  1156. Well, guess what?

  1157. Probably many of us

  1158. have fallen short

1159. in one of those ways.

  1160. Right?

  1161. I can think of

  1162. we can all

  1163. probably all of us

  1164. can think of times

  1165. where we haven't

  1166. lived up to that.

  1167. Right?

  1168. We've said things

  1169. in haste

  1170. and in anger

  1171. that may not be

  1172. completely true

  1173. and certainly

  1174. weren't completely

  1175. helpful.

  1176. Now,

  1177. what do we do?

  1178. Well,

  1179. as Christians

  1180. we shouldn't just

  1181. pretend it never

  1182. happened

  1183. and go on

  1184. and just act

  1185. like I never

  1186. said it.

  1187. Nope.

  1188. And we

  1189. shouldn't

  1190. make excuses

  1191. for ourselves.

  1192. Right?

  1193. No.

  1194. The Christian way

1195. is go to the person

  1196. that we have offended

  1197. and say,

  1198. I was wrong.

  1199. I'm sorry.

  1200. Will you forgive me?

  1201. That's a good way

  1202. to begin an apology

  1203. by the way.

  1204. I was wrong.

  1205. I'm sorry.

  1206. And don't add

  1207. the word but

  1208. after that.

  1209. Right?

  1210. You might need

  1211. to explain

  1212. exactly what you

  1213. are saying

  1214. that you're sorry

  1215. for.

  1216. So people know.

  1217. but maybe

  1218. if the person

  1219. responds well

  1220. especially

  1221. you might even

  1222. say,

  1223. can you pray

  1224. for me

  1225. because I

  1226. realize this

  1227. is an area

  1228. that I need

  1229. to grow in.

  1230. Now,

  1231. I just want you

  1232. to stop and

  1233. think about

  1234. how unusual

  1235. that kind of

  1236. conversation is

  1237. in the world

  1238. that we live in.

  1239. First of all,

  1240. to confess

  1241. wrongs

  1242. without minimizing

  1243. or making

  1244. excuses.

  1245. That's pretty

  1246. unusual.

  1247. And second,

  1248. for someone

  1249. who has been

  1250. wronged

  1251. to not only

  1252. forego

  1253. retaliation

  1254. but actively

  1255. pray

  1256. for that

  1257. person's

  1258. healing

  1259. and growth.

  1260. Extending

  1261. forgiveness

  1262. and blessing.

  1263. That's also

  1264. pretty unusual.

  1265. And you know,

  1266. both of those

  1267. things are

  1268. empowered

  1269. by the love

  1270. and transforming

  1271. power of

  1272. Jesus.

  1273. That we can

  1274. honestly

  1275. acknowledge

  1276. our faults

  1277. and shortcomings.

  1278. And that we

  1279. can graciously

  1280. pray

  1281. for someone,

  1282. even someone

  1283. who has

  1284. wronged us.

  1285. Especially when

  1286. they acknowledge

  1287. that and repent,

  1288. that we can pray

  1289. specifically with

  1290. them and for

  1291. them in that

  1292. way.

  1293. We can even

  1294. pray for someone

  1295. who hasn't yet

  1296. acknowledged it.

  1297. Sort of from,

  1298. that's more from

  1299. a distance,

  1300. right?

  1301. But that's a

  1302. testimony to

  1303. the love and

  1304. power of

  1305. Christ,

  1306. right?

  1307. Every one

  1308. of our sins

  1309. is a grievous

  1310. offense against

  1311. him,

  1312. but Jesus

  1313. doesn't only

  1314. forgive our

  1315. sins,

  1316. he blesses

  1317. us and

  1318. prays for

  1319. us and

  1320. intercedes

  1321. and advocates

  1322. for us and

  1323. seeks our

  1324. healing and

  1325. growth.

  1326. Now,

  1327. what about

  1328. secret sins?

  1329. Right?

  1330. Secret sins

  1331. in our thoughts,

  1332. in our hearts,

  1333. or private sins

  1334. that nobody

  1335. else knows

  1336. about?

  1337. Things like

  1338. jealousy,

  1339. self-pity,

  1340. lust,

  1341. greed.

  1342. What do we

  1343. do with those

  1344. things?

  1345. How does this

  1346. verse apply in

  1347. those situations?

  1348. Well,

  1349. it is not wise

  1350. or helpful to

  1351. confess all of

  1352. our secret sins

  1353. to a large group

  1354. of people,

  1355. all at once,

  1356. right?

  1357. Or to anyone

  1358. indiscriminately,

  1359. right?

  1360. That's not wise.

  1361. But if we are

  1362. struggling with

  1363. secret sins,

  1364. if there are

  1365. sins in our

  1366. thoughts and

  1367. our hearts that

  1368. we are repeatedly

  1369. falling into,

  1370. that have a

  1371. hold on us,

  1372. it is unwise to

  1373. keep that struggle

  1374. completely within

  1375. ourselves.

  1376. Because

  1377. it's going to

  1378. go one way or

  1379. the other.

  1380. And if those

  1381. sins are,

  1382. if we are not

  1383. putting those

  1384. sins to death

  1385. by the power of

  1386. God's word and

  1387. prayer and his

  1388. Holy Spirit,

  1389. they will fester

  1390. and grow within

  1391. us and one

  1392. day they will

  1393. explode.

  1394. And that will

  1395. be very ugly.

  1396. And there will

  1397. be a whole lot

  1398. of damage to

  1399. clean up.

  1400. Especially when

  1401. they've been

  1402. festering and

  1403. growing for

  1404. weeks,

  1405. months,

  1406. years,

  1407. without being

  1408. brought into

  1409. the light.

  1410. So find a

  1411. trusted brother

  1412. or sister in

  1413. Christ,

  1414. tell them what

  1415. sins you are

  1416. struggling with

  1417. or falling into

  1418. and ask them

  1419. to pray for

  1420. you in the

  1421. name of the

  1422. Lord.

  1423. Lord,

  1424. you know,

  1425. sometimes just

  1426. doing that

  1427. pops,

  1428. it's like

  1429. popping a

  1430. balloon.

  1431. It deflates

  1432. the power of

  1433. a secret sin

  1434. that has become

  1435. overwhelming.

  1436. Right?

  1437. And that's too

  1438. big for us to

  1439. deal with on

  1440. our own.

  1441. Sometimes simply

  1442. bringing that

  1443. into the light

  1444. in the presence

  1445. of a brother

  1446. or sister in

  1447. Christ who

  1448. can pray for

  1449. us and assure

  1450. us of the

  1451. truth of the

  1452. gospel,

  1453. God can work

  1454. powerfully

  1455. through that.

  1456. And if

  1457. someone comes

  1458. to you and

  1459. confesses a

  1460. sin that they

  1461. are struggling

  1462. with secretly,

  1463. let me coach

  1464. you a little

  1465. how to respond.

  1466. Don't just

  1467. say,

  1468. okay,

  1469. that's really

  1470. weird that you

  1471. shared that

  1472. with me.

  1473. Right?

  1474. Don't say

  1475. that.

  1476. No.

  1477. Right?

  1478. You're,

  1479. I mean,

  1480. reality is,

  1481. you might be

  1482. no different

  1483. from them.

  1484. Right?

  1485. You have

  1486. things you're

  1487. struggling with

  1488. too.

  1489. So,

  1490. but here's

  1491. what you can

  1492. do that is

  1493. helpful.

  1494. Remind them

  1495. of the

  1496. promises of

  1497. God.

  1498. 1 John 1

  1499. 9,

  1500. if we confess

  1501. our sins,

  1502. God is

  1503. faithful and

  1504. just to

  1505. forgive our

  1506. sins and

  1507. purify us

  1508. from all

  1509. unrighteousness.

  1510. That's a

  1511. good verse

  1512. to share

  1513. with someone

  1514. who confesses

  1515. a secret

  1516. sin that

  1517. they're struggling

  1518. with in their

  1519. thought life or

  1520. in their

  1521. hearts and

  1522. remind them

  1523. of that.

  1524. And maybe

  1525. you take a

  1526. time to pray

  1527. together.

  1528. Maybe the

  1529. person who

  1530. starts by

  1531. just confessing

  1532. their sin to

  1533. God while

  1534. you listen,

  1535. and then you

  1536. pray for them

  1537. and use the

  1538. words of that

  1539. scripture in

  1540. your prayer for

  1541. them.

  1542. Even read that

  1543. scripture and

  1544. pray that they

  1545. would be assured

  1546. of God's

  1547. forgiveness and

  1548. that they would

  1549. know his

  1550. purifying power

  1551. prayer on an

  1552. ongoing basis.

  1553. God can do

  1554. wonderful things

  1555. as we pray for

  1556. one another in

  1557. these kinds of

  1558. ways.

  1559. So, we've seen

  1560. individual Christians

  1561. praying through

  1562. lives up and

  1563. downs.

  1564. We've seen the

  1565. elders praying for

  1566. those in special

  1567. need.

  1568. We've seen fellow

  1569. Christians praying

  1570. for each other as

  1571. we confess our

  1572. sins.

  1573. And finally,

  1574. James concludes

  1575. verse 16 through

  1576. 8 or 17 and

  1577. 18, a reminder

  1578. of the power of

  1579. prayer in all

  1580. circumstances.

  1581. The prayer of a

  1582. righteous person

  1583. has great power

  1584. as it is working.

  1585. It's one of the

  1586. means through which

  1587. God's power is

  1588. displayed in our

  1589. lives and in the

  1590. world.

  1591. And James urges us,

  1592. don't neglect

  1593. prayer, but exercise

  1594. it.

  1595. Right?

  1596. The prayer, make

  1597. prayer a personal

  1598. habit, whether we're

  1599. feeling bad or

  1600. feeling great, call

  1601. upon the elders if

  1602. we have a special

  1603. need, pray for one

  1604. another that we,

  1605. that God, we would

  1606. not be led into

  1607. temptation but

  1608. delivered from evil.

  1609. And James concludes

  1610. with the example of

  1611. Elijah.

  1612. Now, many of us

  1613. think of Elijah and

1614. we think of him as

  1615. a larger-than-life

  1616. figure.

  1617. Right?

  1618. He did great

  1619. miracles.

  1620. He even got taken

1621. up to heaven in the

  1622. chariot of fire.

  1623. That's pretty amazing.

  1624. But James doesn't

  1625. emphasize his heroic

  1626. exploits.

1627. James says he was a

  1628. human being with a

  1629. nature just like ours.

1630. You know, if you read

1631. the story of Elijah at

1632. the end of 1 Kings, you

  1633. will see he boldly

  1634. declared the truth to

  1635. hostile audiences.

  1636. He was resilient

  1637. through trying

  1638. circumstances.

1639. He was an example to

  1640. other godly people of

  1641. his time.

  1642. And God did powerful

  1643. things through him.

1644. But he also got angry

  1645. and depressed and

  1646. afraid.

1647. One day he ran into

1648. the desert and he went

1649. into a cave and he

1650. said, God, I want to

  1651. die.

  1652. I'm done.

  1653. Take me.

  1654. No more.

1655. God said, go to sleep.

1656. God sent an angel to

  1657. cook him a meal.

  1658. God said, eat and

  1659. sleep.

  1660. Sometimes that's what

1661. you need to do to

  1662. recover from certain

  1663. things.

  1664. It's a means of grace,

  1665. right?

  1666. And then Elijah keeps

  1667. traveling, but he's not

1668. totally in a right head

  1669. space yet.

1670. The next thing he says

1671. is, I'm the only one

  1672. left, Lord.

  1673. I'm the only righteous

1674. person left in the whole

  1675. world.

  1676. Everyone's against me.

  1677. Everyone's abandoned me.

1678. You know, even your own

1679. people have left me in the

  1680. dust.

  1681. Now, that wasn't true.

  1682. God said, uh-uh-uh.

  1683. There's like 400 people

1684. who are still faithful and

  1685. still trusting me and

  1686. they're hiding out too,

1687. but I've got plenty of

  1688. others.

  1689. Right?

  1690. Elijah was dealing with

  1691. self-pity.

  1692. Right?

1693. I'm the only one left.

  1694. Right?

  1695. Here's the point.

1696. Like the rest of us,

  1697. Elijah struggled with

  1698. anger and fear and

  1699. self-righteousness and

  1700. self-pity.

  1701. But through his trials

  1702. and despite his flaws,

  1703. he prayed.

1704. And James reminds us of

  1705. a particular season in

  1706. Elijah's life when the

  1707. nation of Israel had

  1708. fallen into great

  1709. wickedness.

1710. In fact, it says that

1711. the king at that time

  1712. was the most wicked

  1713. king that there ever

  1714. had been in Israel.

1715. Worse than all of the

  1716. rest.

  1717. The whole nation was

  1718. worshiping idols and

  1719. all kinds of things

1720. were way out of whack.

  1721. People were, all kinds

  1722. of people were being

  1723. mistreated.

  1724. God's name was not

  1725. being honored.

  1726. Elijah prayed that God

  1727. would withhold the

1728. rain from the land to

1729. lead the king and the

  1730. people to repentance and

  1731. to acknowledge the one

  1732. true God.

  1733. And God answered his

  1734. prayer.

1735. And then after a season

  1736. of judgment, Elijah

  1737. prayed that God would

1738. pour out his mercy once

  1739. again and restore the

  1740. land to fruitfulness.

  1741. And God answered his

  1742. prayer.

  1743. You see, Elijah wasn't,

1744. Elijah had a big problem

  1745. on his hands.

  1746. He wasn't just praying

1747. for his own ups and

  1748. downs in life.

  1749. He wasn't just praying

1750. for one other person in

  1751. special need.

  1752. He wasn't just praying

  1753. for some other Christians

1754. or some other people in

  1755. his fellowship or church.

1756. He was dealing with a

  1757. national disaster.

1758. And God heard his prayer.

1759. Even for a huge problem,

1760. God hears and answers our

  1761. prayer.

  1762. Whatever the circumstances

  1763. we are facing, whatever

  1764. the circumstances the world

1765. is in around us, he hears

1766. our prayer not because we're

  1767. flawless, not because we're

  1768. experts in prayer, but

1769. because Jesus has made a way

  1770. for us.

  1771. Right?

1772. The prayer of a righteous

  1773. person is powerful and

  1774. effective.

1775. What does it mean to be

  1776. righteous?

1777. It means that we have been

1778. made right with God through

1779. the work of Jesus Christ.

1780. And that we can come before

1781. God through him with freedom

  1782. and confidence.

1783. And through him we can

  1784. experience his power through

  1785. prayer.

  1786. So let's pray.

1787. Father, thank you for this

  1788. exhortation and this invitation

  1789. to prayer.

1790. In all circumstances, on our

1791. own, with one another, we pray

1792. that prayer would come to

1793. pervade our lives more and

  1794. more.

1795. Teach us, Lord, to pray in

1796. every season of our lives.

1797. Teach us to pray for one

1798. another and with one another.

1799. Teach us to pray for our

  1800. nation and our world.

1801. Thank you that you are a

1802. gracious and merciful God who

  1803. hears and answers prayer.

1804. We pray these things in Jesus'

  1805. name.

  1806. Amen.

  1807. Amen.

  1808. Amen.

  1809. Amen.

  1810. Amen.
