  1. Well, it's good to see you all this morning. Glad you could join us both in person and on the live stream.

  2. You know, I've been rearranging my house a little bit these days, which has been great.

  3. And I came across an envelope that I got from a friend of mine this summer.

  4. And the envelope contained a series of letters that I wrote back in 1986

  5. as I was in the process of coming to faith in Jesus Christ.

  6. I had grown up hearing of Jesus.

  7. I had heard his name and read some Bible stories, but I never understood him.

  8. I was, in fact, blinded by my misunderstanding of who he was.

  9. And I was not a follower of him.

  10. In fact, I dismissed him and wanted to live my own way.

  11. Anyway, my junior year in high school, some of you have been around for Trinity.

  12. You've heard this story before.

  13. But through conversations with friends and then reading through some C.S. Lewis, particularly Mere Christianity,

  14. I came to understand who Jesus was.

  15. And it was really fun to read through these letters again this week

  16. and to see my 17-year-old self expressing the joy of finally and fully coming to understand who Jesus was

  17. and hearing his call to respond to him,

  18. to take my life and to follow him with all that I was.

  19. And I knew what that looked like because I had these friends who had shown me what that looks like

  20. as I had gotten to know them.

  21. The thrill of understanding and living in light of the greatness of Jesus was pretty awesome.

  22. As I read them as well, I was also reflecting on the fact that it's easy now, many years later,

  23. to lose that thrill and that joy and that awe.

  24. It's easy for Jesus to become familiar.

  25. That if my experience of Jesus before I came to faith was that of misunderstanding

  26. and therefore not really rejoicing in it,

  27. how easy it is now for familiarity to also similarly blind me to his greatness

  28. and dull my heart so that I don't respond.

  29. I don't know about you this morning.

  30. Maybe you're here seeking to understand Jesus for the first time.

  31. Maybe you've known about him for a long time

  32. but have not actually found the joy of knowing him.

  33. Maybe you've been going to church for a long time

  34. but familiarity and time have made it stale.

  35. Wherever you're at this morning, our passage comes and invites us this morning

  36. to look again at Jesus anew.

  37. We're continuing in our series in the Gospel of John.

  38. We're looking at John chapter 1 starting in verse 35.

    John 1 chapter mention

  39. If you have that at home or here, you can look at it on your phone or in your Bible.

  40. We're going to read it together.

  41. Then I'm going to pray and then we will dive in.

  42. All right.

  43. So John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  44. And just to give us a little bit of context as we're diving in,

  45. Pastor Nick preached last week on verses 1 through 18,

  46. this grand prologue, this very, in some ways, almost philosophical depiction of who Jesus was.

  47. The Word became flesh.

  48. And here, after that, what we see is that the Apostle John begins to tell the story

  49. of what that looked like on earth, how the Word became flesh on earth.

  50. The end of chapter 1 and then in chapter 2, Jesus begins His ministry.

  51. So that's where we're at in the Gospel of John.

  52. Let's read our passage together.

  53. John chapter 1, verse 35.

    John 1:35

  54. The next day, again, John was standing with two of his disciples.

  55. And he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said,

  56. Behold, the Lamb of God.

  57. The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

  58. Jesus turned, saw them following, and said to them,

  59. What are you seeking?

  60. And they said to him, Rabbi, which means teacher,

  61. Where are you staying?

  62. And he said to them, Come, and you will see.

  63. So they came and saw where he was staying,

  64. and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

  65. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew,

  66. Simon Peter's brother.

  67. He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him,

  68. We have found the Messiah, which means Christ.

  69. He brought him to Jesus.

  70. Jesus looked at him and said,

  71. So you are Simon, the son of John?

  72. You shall be called Cephas, which means Peter.

  73. The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee.

  74. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me.

  75. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

  76. Philip found Nathanael and said to him,

  77. We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote,

  78. Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

  79. Nathanael said to him,

  80. Can anything good come of Nazareth?

  81. And Philip said to him,

  82. Come and see.

  83. And Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,

  84. Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit.

  85. And Nathanael said to him,

  86. How do you know me?

  87. Jesus answered him,

  88. Before Philip called you,

  89. When you were under the fig tree,

  90. I saw you.

  91. Nathanael answered him,

  92. Rabbi, you are the son of God.

  93. You are the king of Israel.

  94. And Jesus answered him,

  95. Because I saw you,

  96. Because I said to you,

  97. I saw you under the fig tree,

  98. Do you believe?

  99. You will see greater things than these.

  100. And he said to him,

  101. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  102. You will see heaven opened,

  103. And the angels of God ascending and descending

  104. On the son of man.

  105. Will you pray with me?

  106. Lord, as we look at this passage this morning,

  107. Lord, we pray that you would open our eyes.

  108. Lord, that we would see you, Jesus,

  109. As you truly are.

  110. That we would see you as this passage reveals you to be.

  111. That we would see you as our king and our glory.

  112. Lord, we pray that you would help us to see you.

  113. And as we see you, Lord,

  114. Will you turn our hearts towards you

  115. In adoration, in worship.

  116. Lord, I pray for your help this morning.

  117. Will you give me your words to speak.

  118. Lord, and may you bless each of us

  119. Through the preaching of your word.

  120. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  121. Amen.

  122. Amen.

  123. So, friends, as we come to this,

  124. It's always good to remember

  125. That when we read the Gospels,

  126. That it's a narrative.

  127. It's a story.

  128. And it's built like a story.

  129. And this story is built in a fairly simple way.

  130. There is a setting in verses 35 and 36

  131. Where John the Baptist's testimony about Jesus,

  132. Which is that he's the Lamb of God

  133. Who takes away the sin of the world,

  134. Remembering the Passover and other places in the Old Testament

  135. Where atonement for sin comes through the sacrifice of a lamb.

  136. And so, in the setup, it just reminds us of that.

  137. It doesn't expound on it.

  138. And we're not going to spend a ton of time on it today.

  139. But it starts there.

  140. And then it launches into these two stories,

  141. These two accounts of people,

  142. The first disciples encountering Jesus.

  143. First, we have Andrew and probably the Apostle John,

  144. Who wrote this Gospel.

  145. Andrew and John following Jesus.

  146. And then Andrew coming and bringing his brother Peter to come with him.

  147. And what that, and the interaction that they have with Jesus.

  148. And then in verses 43 through 50,

  149. You have the next day in a different place,

  150. Jesus calling Philip,

  151. And Philip bringing his friend Nathaniel,

  152. And their encounter with Jesus.

  153. And then in verse 51,

  154. There's a final pronouncement.

  155. And it looks like it might simply be a normal part of the end of that conversation.

  156. But in fact, for two reasons,

  157. I think it stands out as John's summary statement

  158. That would stand out to us.

  159. First, because Jesus says,

  160. Amen, amen.

  161. In this ESV, it says,

  162. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  163. Jesus is giving, saying,

  164. Pay attention to this.

  165. What I'm about to say is really important.

  166. And then when he says,

  167. I say to you,

  168. You will see heaven opened and the angels of God descending.

  169. Those you's are no longer singular.

  170. The rest of the narrative says that he's talking to Nathaniel.

  171. And then in verse 51,

  172. It changes to talking to all of you.

  173. And all of us.

  174. And the gospel writer, John,

  175. Wants us to see that verse 51 is the capstone of this narrative arc.

  176. And in fact, a critical piece.

  177. So having said that,

  178. This passage is about this invitation to come and see.

  179. Jesus invites Andrew and John,

  180. Come and see.

  181. Philip invites Nathaniel,

  182. Come and see.

  183. What is it that the gospel writer, John,

  184. Wants us to see in this passage?

  185. He wants us to see, first, how others see Jesus.

  186. He wants to see, second, how Jesus sees others.

  187. And third, how Jesus wants us to see him.

  188. All right?

  189. So we're going to work through those.

  190. How others see Jesus is the first thing that the apostle wants us to see.

  191. And one of the things that's striking as you read through this passage

  192. is the number of times when Jesus gets put a label or a title on him.

  193. I'm just going to run through them really quickly so we can see how clearly.

  194. Verse 36, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  195. We've already talked about this as a reference to the Passover and the sacrificial system.

  196. Verse 38, Andrew says to him,

  197. You are rabbi.

  198. That means teacher.

  199. An honored one.

  200. A spiritual leader.

  201. Who in those days people would literally pick up their life

  202. and follow someone in order to be taught by them.

  203. And then in verse 41, as Andrew's talking to Peter, he says,

  204. We found the Messiah, the Christ.

  205. John transliterates it for his Greek-speaking Jewish audience of this book.

  206. And he says,

  207. The Messiah, which means Christ, which means anointed one.

  208. And this imagery of the anointed one would arouse in the Jewish mind,

  209. the king and the priest who would serve in the temple and serve in the capital

  210. and who would rule over God's people.

  211. The descendant of David, that the Jewish people were longing to come

  212. and rule and reign over his people.

  213. And then we see in verse 45, as Philip is saying,

  214. Nathanael, you've got to come see this guy.

  215. He says,

  216. This is the one of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote.

  217. He is the fulfillment of all the things that we've heard.

  218. Those are sort of summary statements that say the whole Old Testament,

  219. from beginning to end, is pointing towards something.

  220. And we think this is the thing, this is the person, in fact, that it all points to.

  221. The one who will come and restore God's kingdom,

  222. bring the abundance and fullness of his love and provision,

  223. who will establish peace and restore hope to his people.

  224. And he says,

  225. This one that the whole Old Testament, he's this particular guy.

  226. He's this dude.

  227. He's Jesus from Nazareth, the town up the way,

  228. who's the son of Joseph, the carpenter,

  229. who may have built your table.

  230. And he locates this grand promise in this very particular person.

  231. And John is helping us see,

  232. this is the word became flesh.

  233. This is the second person of the Trinity who was God and was with God

  234. in a human body,

  235. who lived in the town next door.

  236. And finally, in verse 49,

  237. as Nathanael interacts with Jesus,

  238. Jesus reveals himself as being one with supernatural power.

  239. Nathanael says,

  240. You are the son of God.

  241. You are the king of Israel.

  242. Not someone who had come from Nazareth, by the way.

  243. Nathanael looks at him and he says,

  244. You're the promised one.

  245. You're the one we've been looking for.

  246. And John writes this gospel.

  247. Here's the amazing thing.

  248. You read this and you get the sense that

  249. none of these people fully understood

  250. what they were reading

  251. and what they were saying

  252. when they gave Jesus these titles.

  253. None of them understood

  254. who they were really talking to.

  255. None of them had this fullness

  256. of the word of God made flesh.

  257. John is writing to say,

  258. There's just this beginning.

  259. And these people spoke better than they knew.

  260. Better than they knew of who Jesus was.

  261. Because the gospel writer is saying,

  262. I'm going to set this up for you

  263. and now I'm going to give you 20 chapters,

  264. 21 chapters,

  265. so that you understand who this one is.

  266. that in his life and ministry,

  267. in his death and atoning sacrifice,

  268. in his resurrection and victory

  269. over sin and death,

  270. these titles all foretell

  271. how and who Jesus is going to fully be

  272. as the Savior of the world.

  273. These titles are like black and white sketches

  274. that then the rest of the gospel

  275. fills in with color

  276. so that we understand him.

  277. And the overall effect of it is this.

  278. The one who you've been waiting for has come.

  279. Don't delay.

  280. Don't get distracted.

  281. Don't miss this.

  282. He is here.

  283. Come and see this Jesus.

  284. Come and spend time with him.

  285. Come and ask him the questions

  286. you need to ask.

  287. Jesus invites the disciples.

  288. Come.

  289. Come and stay with me.

  290. Come and follow me.

  291. Come and see my greatness.

  292. Friends,

  293. do you see Jesus this morning?

  294. Like this.

  295. Do you hear his invitation in your life?

  296. Whether you're exploring

  297. or have known him for a long time,

  298. he says,

  299. come and see.

  300. See him in all his majesty.

  301. He knows you don't understand it all.

  302. Who would?

  303. He's the God of the universe.

  304. Become flesh.

  305. It'll take us a lifetime

  306. to seek to understand.

  307. And still,

  308. we will continue to grow.

  309. He knows that the spiritual words

  310. and the terms that we use of him

  311. will continue to mean more and more

  312. as we go along in our lives.

  313. But he says,

  314. come.

  315. Come and see the greatness of who I am.

  316. This is the most important thing

  317. you will ever know.

  318. This is the most important thing

  319. you will ever encounter.

  320. And following him

  321. and finding him

  322. will be the greatest joy of your life.

  323. And this is Jesus.

  324. He invites us to explore it.

  325. To explore his glory.

  326. I remember

  327. the opportunities I had

  328. when I worked in Campus Ministry

  329. to go to Colorado

  330. every other summer

  331. and go to Rocky Mountain National Park.

  332. And the first time you drive

  333. through Rocky Mountain National Park,

  334. it's awesome.

  335. Right?

  336. It's absolutely majestic.

  337. And you go up through the road

  338. that goes through the whole thing.

  339. And it's just,

  340. it's breathtaking.

  341. But you know what I found

  342. because I had the opportunity

  343. to stay there for a number of weeks

  344. is that the glory of it

  345. just continued to increase

  346. as I found different hiking trails

  347. and different paths

  348. and climbed different peaks

  349. and got to different mountain valleys.

  350. And the beauty

  351. and the glory

  352. and the majesty

  353. only increased

  354. as I explored it more and more.

  355. And this is what Jesus

  356. is meant to be for us.

  357. And this is what John is saying

  358. that he's lifting up.

  359. This is the one

  360. who you should spend your time

  361. worshiping and glorifying.

  362. I want to step for just a second.

  363. Pastor Nick alluded to this

  364. in his prayer.

  365. One of the pastoral concerns

  366. that I've had over the last week

  367. as I've been reading the news

  368. is that some of our national discussion

  369. about politics

  370. have had very, very strong

  371. religious overtones.

  372. I'm concerned

  373. that the name of Jesus

  374. has been co-opted

  375. for political ends

  376. in our country.

  377. I think there is confusion

  378. in the broad society

  379. and maybe even in the church

  380. about how we understand

  381. politics in the kingdom of God

  382. and how they interact.

  383. When you read the accounts

  384. of the crowd

  385. that ended up becoming a riot

  386. and I can't

  387. we're not going to start

  388. with broad strokes

  389. there was clear evidence

  390. that many people there

  391. not all

  392. but many people there

  393. were carrying signs

  394. that says

  395. Jesus saves.

  396. They were having sing-alongs

  397. to Our God Reigns.

  398. One of the protesters

  399. who was in the capital

  400. said

  401. I had to get in there

  402. to plead the blood of Jesus

  403. inside the capital.

  404. Friends

  405. this use of biblical verses

  406. and apocalyptic imagery

  407. for political agendas

  408. reveals that

  409. some have put their hope

  410. in politics

  411. and in political leaders

  412. and have adopted

  413. a religious fervor

  414. about politics.

  415. And we must be clear

  416. that the Jesus

  417. that John lifts up

  418. in his gospel

  419. is greater than that.

  420. Neither Donald Trump

  421. nor Joe Biden

  422. will save us.

  423. No political party

  424. has the power

  425. to rescue our nation

  426. or our country.

  427. Nor do they have the ability

  428. to destroy it.

  429. We cannot put our hope

  430. in human systems

  431. and human structures.

  432. And look

  433. I know

  434. that in this room

  435. and in our congregation

  436. virtually

  437. people have supported

  438. different parties

  439. different candidates

  440. and there can be

  441. good reasons

  442. to do so.

  443. But we cannot say

  444. that one of them

  445. has the imprint

  446. and the blessing

  447. of Jesus Christ

  448. at the expense

  449. of the other one

  450. because Jesus

  451. is above these things.

  452. And when we see

  453. that clearly

  454. when Jesus is our king

  455. and when Jesus reigns

  456. over the world

  457. we are then free

  458. friends

  459. to engage in politics

  460. to engage in seeking

  461. to bring righteousness

  462. and justice

  463. to bring light

  464. and hope

  465. to address the evils

  466. of our day

  467. from a biblical standpoint

  468. to speak

  469. to these things

  470. we have a freedom

  471. to know

  472. that ultimately

  473. those things

  474. will not be

  475. transformed

  476. because of politics

  477. or because of the person

  478. who is sitting

  479. in the White House

  480. but because of the power

  481. of God

  482. and the redeemer

  483. who sits on the throne

  484. in heaven

  485. over all things

  486. for all time

  487. and who will one day

  488. come and establish

  489. his kingdom.

  490. Jesus alone

  491. is our savior

  492. and king

  493. who calls us

  494. to follow him.

  495. He is the one

  496. who won his victory

  497. by dying for us

  498. in humility

  499. and weakness.

  500. He is the one

  501. worth dying for

  502. and worth living for

  503. and all other allegiances

  504. must be secondary.

  505. And the kingdom

  506. that he builds

  507. is not a kingdom

  508. of this world

  509. but it is a kingdom

  510. of a people

  511. from every tongue

  512. tribe and nation

  513. called the church.

  514. And I say this

  515. because

  516. I want

  517. the clarity

  518. of Jesus' glory

  519. to be the greatest

  520. focus of our lives

  521. and for us

  522. to not confuse

  523. and not conflate

  524. politics

  525. and political leaders

  526. and political agendas.

  527. And when I read

  528. in the media today

  529. there are a lot

  530. of people

  531. who are confused

  532. about that.

  533. But John the Apostle

  534. says come and see.

  535. Come and see

  536. what kind of savior

  537. he is here.

  538. Come and see

  539. and as he unfolds

  540. the gospel

  541. come and see

  542. with a woman

  543. in Samaria.

  544. Come and see

  545. with Nicodemus.

  546. Come and see

  547. with the lepers.

  548. Come and see

  549. with a blind man.

  550. Come and see

  551. with the priests

  552. and the scribes.

  553. Come and see

  554. with his mourning friends

  555. and the adoring crowds

  556. and his disciples

  557. who are stumbling

  558. and fumbling

  559. and failing

  560. as they don't

  561. fully understand him

  562. and yet they stay

  563. with him.

  564. Come and see

  565. Jesus

  566. through their eyes.

  567. That's not going

  568. to work.

  569. Come and see

  570. Jesus

  571. as others

  572. see him

  573. as the first

  574. thing that

  575. John wants

  576. us to do.

  577. The second

  578. thing that

  579. John wants

  580. us to see

  581. is how

  582. Jesus sees

  583. others

  584. and by extension

  585. us.

  586. It's kind of

  587. striking.

  588. The narrative

  589. structure

  590. if you look

  591. at these

  592. two narratives

  593. one with

  594. Andrew and Peter

  595. and one with

  596. Philip and Nathaniel

  597. is ending

  598. with this

  599. person being

  600. invited to come

  601. and interact

  602. with Jesus

  603. and Jesus

  604. interacts with

  605. them in a

  606. particular way.

  607. He sees

  608. them in a

  609. way that

  610. transforms

  611. them.

  612. Simon comes

  613. in and

  614. Jesus says

  615. who are you?

  616. Oh you're

  617. Simon son of

  618. what is it?

  619. John.

  620. Simon son of

  621. John.

  622. Now I see

  623. who I'm going

  624. to make you

  625. to be.

  626. I'm going to

  627. make you

  628. Cephas which

  629. means Peter.

  630. And we know

  631. from other

  632. places this

  633. means the

  634. rock.

  635. This is he's

  636. seeing what

  637. Jesus will do.

  638. And one of the

  639. things you need

  640. to know is

  641. John's audience

  642. would have

  643. known exactly

  644. who Peter

  645. was.

  646. Because he

  647. was one of

  648. the most

  649. famous Christians

  650. in the first

  651. century.

  652. Everyone would

  653. have known

  654. the apostle

  655. Peter the

  656. bishop of

  657. Rome.

  658. And therefore

  659. John doesn't

  660. have to say

  661. anything about

  662. him.

  663. He's like

  664. you know

  665. how this

  666. turned out.

  667. He became

  668. the one that

  669. Jesus saw

  670. that he was

  671. going to be.

  672. In fact

  673. Jesus made

  674. him the man

  675. that he was

  676. going to be.

  677. The focus

  678. here is on

  679. a Jesus who

  680. knows people

  681. thoroughly and

  682. doesn't only

  683. see into the

  684. future to

  685. see what

  686. they will

  687. become.

  688. But he so

  689. calls them

  690. that he makes

  691. them what he

  692. calls them to

  693. be.

  694. And then

  695. in Nathaniel

  696. as Nathaniel

  697. comes to

  698. Jesus Jesus

  699. looks at him

  700. and says

  701. behold an

  702. Israelite in

  703. whom there is

  704. no deceit.

  705. Jesus looks

  706. at this man

  707. and he says

  708. well here's

  709. someone who

  710. is of the

  711. tribe of

  712. Israel.

  713. And there's a

  714. reference here

  715. and we'll come

  716. back to why

  717. we get here

  718. because you'll

  719. see at the

  720. end verse

  721. 51 is going

  722. to be very

  723. strongly

  724. attached to

  725. the story of

  726. Jacob in

  727. Genesis.

  728. But here

  729. Jesus looks

  730. at Nathaniel

  731. and says

  732. you know

  733. what the

  734. people of

  735. Israel one

  736. of their

  737. patriarchs was

  738. Jacob and he

  739. was a deceiver

  740. but you are

  741. one in whom

  742. there is no

  743. deceit.

  744. You are

  745. actually one

  746. of Israel.

  747. That is those

  748. who follow

  749. the God

  750. who sees.

  751. And Nathaniel

  752. is transformed

  753. by that comment.

  754. Isn't it

  755. striking?

  756. Now Nathaniel

  757. also says

  758. how do you

  759. know me?

  760. And Jesus

  761. says well

  762. I saw you.

  763. And this

  764. seeing obviously

  765. was supernatural.

  766. It was not

  767. physical.

  768. It wasn't like

  769. Jesus peeked

  770. around the

  771. corner and

  772. said I'm

  773. going to

  774. get this

  775. guy.

  776. You know

  777. this is not

  778. a charlatan

  779. with some

  780. smoke and

  781. mirrors.

  782. Jesus had

  783. an understanding

  784. of where

  785. Nathaniel was

  786. that could

  787. only be

  788. because of

  789. his deity.

  790. I believe

  791. that's what

  792. the implication

  793. of this

  794. passage is.

  795. And Nathaniel

  796. says wow

  797. you saw

  798. me even

  799. before you

  800. could see

  801. me with

  802. your eyes.

  803. And you

  804. see me

  805. as someone

  806. in whom

  807. there is

  808. no deceit.

  809. And in

  810. these things

  811. he then

  812. responds.

  813. He says wow

  814. you are God.

  815. You are the

  816. son of God.

  817. You are the

  818. king of Israel.

  819. You are the

  820. one that

  821. Philip told me

  822. about.

  823. And the

  824. cynic becomes

  825. a believer

  826. in the instant

  827. that he

  828. encounters Jesus.

  829. and friends

  830. the beautiful

  831. thing about it

  832. is that Jesus

  833. looks at us

  834. as well.

  835. And he

  836. sees us

  837. not as he

  838. hopes we

  839. will be

  840. nor does

  841. he see us

  842. as we

  843. try to be

  844. but he

  845. sees us

  846. as he

  847. will make

  848. us

  849. to be.

  850. he sees

  851. us

  852. and he

  853. knows

  854. that in

  855. his

  856. calling

  857. of us

  858. to himself

  859. he is

  860. going to

  861. bring a

  862. transforming

  863. power

  864. whereby

  865. because of

  866. union with

  867. him

  868. he is

  869. going to

  870. make us

  871. new

  872. and he

  873. sees the

  874. woman

  875. and the

  876. man

  877. that we

  878. will

  879. become

  880. because of

  881. his power

  882. at work

  883. in us.

  884. and this

  885. is an

  886. amazing

  887. thing.

  888. Jesus'

  889. vision of

  890. us

  891. has

  892. transforming

  893. power.

  894. Friends

  895. if you

  896. encounter

  897. Jesus

  898. like this

  899. not

  900. not just

  901. about what

  902. you know

  903. of him

  904. but do

  905. you know

  906. what it's

  907. like for

  908. him to

  909. know you?

  910. Do you

  911. know his

  912. redemptive

  913. power?

  914. Revealing

  915. himself to

  916. you in

  917. such a

  918. way that

  919. you respond

  920. that your

  921. heart changes

  922. that you

  923. fall down

  924. and worship

  925. that you

  926. forsake

  927. other things

  928. to follow

  929. him

  930. that you

  931. call him

  932. God's

  933. chosen

  934. one.

  935. So John

  936. has shown

  937. us what

  938. other people

  939. see in

  940. Jesus

  941. with this

  942. list of

  943. titles.

  944. John

  945. has shown

  946. us what

  947. Jesus sees

  948. in other

  949. people through

  950. his redemptive

  951. eyes but

  952. finally in

  953. verse 51

  954. John wants

  955. us to see

  956. how Jesus

  957. intends for

  958. us to see

  959. him.

  960. Let's look

  961. at these

  962. verses again.

  963. The end

  964. of the

  965. narrative

  966. Jesus answers

  967. Nathanael

  968. and says

  969. because I

  970. said to

  971. you I

  972. saw you

  973. under the

  974. fig tree

  975. do you

  976. believe?

  977. You will

  978. see

  979. greater

  980. things

  981. than

  982. these.

  983. You will

  984. see

  985. greater

  986. things

  987. than

  988. these.

  989. This

  990. supernatural

  991. vision that

  992. I've had

  993. of you

  994. that could

  995. only be

  996. because I'm

  997. God

  998. is only

  999. the beginning

  1000. of what

  1001. you're going

  1002. to see.

  1003. And then

  1004. he shifts

  1005. gears in

  1006. verse 51

  1007. and he

  1008. said to

  1009. him

  1010. truly

  1011. truly

  1012. truly

  1013. I say

  1014. to

  1015. you

  1016. you

  1017. will

  1018. see

  1019. heaven

  1020. open

  1021. and

  1022. the

  1023. angels

  1024. of

  1025. God

  1026. ascending

  1027. and

  1028. descending

  1029. on the

  1030. son

  1031. of man.

  1032. And every

  1033. Jew who

  1034. heard that

  1035. story would

  1036. know oh

  1037. he's talking

  1038. about

  1039. Jacob.

  1040. In

  1041. 28

  1042. verses

  1043. 12

  1044. through

  1045. 17

  1046. 18

  1047. the

  1048. patriarch

  1049. who

  1050. had

  1051. deceived

  1052. his

  1053. father

  1054. into

  1055. receiving

  1056. his

  1057. blessing

  1058. and now

  1059. was

  1060. fleeing

  1061. for his

  1062. life

  1063. from his

  1064. home

  1065. and while

  1066. he's out

  1067. in the

  1068. wilderness

  1069. he lay

  1070. down

  1071. put his

  1072. head on

  1073. a stone

  1074. and fell

  1075. asleep.

  1076. In

  1077. Genesis

  1078. 28

  1079. it says

  1080. this

  1081. starting

  1082. in verse

  1083. 12

  1084. and he

  1085. that is

  1086. Jacob

  1087. dreamed

  1088. and behold

  1089. there was

  1090. a ladder

  1091. set up

  1092. on the

  1093. earth

  1094. and the

  1095. top

  1096. of it

  1097. reached

  1098. to

  1099. heaven

  1100. and behold

  1101. the angels

  1102. of God

  1103. were ascending

  1104. and descending

  1105. on it

  1106. and behold

  1107. the Lord

  1108. stood above

  1109. it and said

  1110. I am the

  1111. Lord

  1112. the God

  1113. of Abraham

  1114. your father

  1115. and the

  1116. God

  1117. of Isaac

  1118. the land

  1119. on which

  1120. you lie

  1121. I will

  1122. give to

  1123. you

  1124. and to

  1125. your

  1126. offspring

  1127. your

  1128. offspring

  1129. shall be

  1130. like the

  1131. dust

  1132. of the

  1133. earth

  1134. and you

  1135. shall

  1136. spread

  1137. abroad

  1138. to the

  1139. west

  1140. and to

  1141. the

  1142. east

  1143. and to

  1144. the

  1145. north

  1146. and to

  1147. the

  1148. south

  1149. and in

  1150. you

  1151. and in

  1152. your

  1153. offspring

  1154. shall

  1155. all the

  1156. families

  1157. of the

  1158. earth

  1159. be

  1160. blessed

  1161. behold

  1162. I am

  1163. with

  1164. you

  1165. and will

  1166. keep

  1167. you

  1168. to this

  1169. land

  1170. for I

  1171. will

  1172. not

  1173. leave

  1174. you

  1175. until

  1176. I have

  1177. done

  1178. what

  1179. I

  1180. promised

  1181. you

  1182. and then

  1183. Jacob

  1184. awoke

  1185. from his

  1186. sleep

  1187. and said

  1188. surely

  1189. the Lord

  1190. is in

  1191. this

  1192. place

  1193. and I

  1194. did

  1195. not

  1196. know

  1197. it

  1198. and he

  1199. was

  1200. afraid

  1201. and he

  1202. said

  1203. how

  1204. awesome

  1205. is

  1206. this

  1207. place

  1208. there

  1209. is

  1210. none

  1211. other

  1212. this

  1213. is

  1214. none

  1215. other

  1216. than

  1217. the

  1218. house

  1219. of

  1220. God

  1221. and

  1222. this

  1223. is

  1224. the

  1225. gate

  1226. of

  1227. heaven

  1228. so

  1229. this

  1230. well

  1231. known

  1232. story

  1233. of

  1234. the

  1235. patriarch

  1236. Jacob

  1237. having

  1238. this

  1239. vision

  1240. this

  1241. dream

  1242. of

  1243. a

  1244. ladder

  1245. and

  1246. we

  1247. usually

  1248. think

  1249. of

  1250. an

  1251. extension

  1252. ladder

  1253. that

  1254. we

  1255. sort

  1256. of

  1257. throw

  1258. up

  1259. on

  1260. the

  1261. side

  1262. of

  1263. our

  1264. house

  1265. this

  1266. is

  1267. not

  1268. a

  1269. good

  1270. vision

  1271. for

  1272. us

  1273. I

  1274. want

  1275. you

  1276. to

  1277. think

  1278. of

  1279. a

  1280. Babylonian

  1281. pyramid

  1282. with

  1283. a

  1284. staircase

  1285. going

  1286. up

  1287. one

  1288. side

  1289. that

  1290. has

  1291. layers

  1292. and

  1293. levels

  1294. and

  1295. the

  1296. stairs

  1297. go

  1298. up

  1299. and

  1300. up

  1301. and

  1302. it

  1303. was

  1304. built

  1305. like

  1306. the

  1307. Tower

  1308. of

  1309. Babel

  1310. in

  1311. Genesis

  1312. 11

  1313. it

  1314. was

  1315. built

  1316. because

  1317. there

  1318. was

  1319. this

  1320. idea

  1321. that

  1322. you

  1323. could

  1324. somehow

  1325. create

  1326. a

  1327. connection

  1328. between

  1329. heaven

  1330. and

  1331. earth

  1332. by

  1333. creating

  1334. this

  1335. ladder

  1336. or

  1337. this

  1338. staircase

  1339. or

  1340. this

  1341. temple

  1342. so

  1343. God

  1344. takes

  1345. this

  1346. picture

  1347. and

  1348. he

  1349. plants

  1350. it

  1351. in

  1352. the

  1353. mind

  1354. of

  1355. Jacob

  1356. and

  1357. he

  1358. says

  1359. this

  1360. is

  1361. really

  1362. what's

  1363. going

  1364. on

  1365. I

  1366. am

  1367. creating

  1368. a

  1369. place

  1370. where

  1371. heaven

  1372. and

  1373. earth

  1374. will

  1375. meet

  1376. the

  1377. gate

  1378. of

  1379. heaven

  1380. and

  1381. he

  1382. comes

  1383. and

  1384. he

  1385. says

  1386. Jacob

  1387. you

  1388. are

  1389. the

  1390. one

  1391. who

  1392. is

  1393. the

  1394. fulfillment

  1395. of

  1396. the

  1397. promises

  1398. of

  1399. the

  1400. covenant

  1401. that

  1402. I've

  1403. made

  1404. to

  1405. Abraham

  1406. and

  1407. Isaac

  1408. I

  1409. will

  1410. make

  1411. your

  1412. people

  1413. great

  1414. and

  1415. I

  1416. will

  1417. bless

  1418. the

  1419. whole

  1420. world

  1421. and

  1422. I

  1423. will

  1424. make

  1425. my

  1426. glory

  1427. known

  1428. through

  1429. all

  1430. of

  1431. you

  1432. and

  1433. Jacob

  1434. receives

  1435. all

  1436. this

  1437. and

  1438. he

  1439. says

  1440. this

  1441. is

  1442. where

  1443. the

  1444. Lord

  1445. is

  1446. this

  1447. is

  1448. the

  1449. gate

  1450. of

  1451. heaven

  1452. and

  1453. I'm

  1454. going

  1455. to

  1456. call

  1457. this

  1458. place

  1459. Bethel

  1460. which

  1461. means

  1462. the

  1463. house

  1464. of

  1465. God

  1466. the

  1467. place

  1468. where

  1469. man

  1470. and

  1471. God

  1472. where

  1473. humans

  1474. men

  1475. and

  1476. women

  1477. can

  1478. meet

  1479. with

  1480. God

  1481. a

  1482. place

  1483. where

  1484. a

  1485. sinful

  1486. deceiver

  1487. could

  1488. be

  1489. welcomed

  1490. by

  1491. God

  1492. himself

  1493. and

  1494. what

  1495. Jesus

  1496. says

  1497. to

  1498. Nathaniel

  1499. and to

  1500. Philip

  1501. and to

  1502. Andrew

  1503. and to

  1504. us

  1505. I'm

  1506. the

  1507. one

  1508. I am

  1509. the

  1510. son

  1511. of

  1512. man

  1513. upon

  1514. whom

  1515. the

  1516. angels

  1517. are

  1518. descending

  1519. and

  1520. ascending

  1521. I

  1522. am

  1523. the

  1524. gate

  1525. to

  1526. heaven

  1527. I

  1528. am

  1529. the

  1530. place

  1531. where

  1532. God

  1533. dwells

  1534. I

  1535. am

  1536. the

  1537. way

  1538. do

  1539. you

  1540. want

  1541. to

  1542. get

  1543. to

  1544. God

  1545. I'm

  1546. the

  1547. way

  1548. that

  1549. you're

  1550. going

  1551. to

  1552. be

  1553. able

  1554. to

  1555. do

  1556. it

  1557. he

  1558. uses

  1559. his

  1560. title

  1561. son

  1562. of

  1563. man

  1564. that

  1565. would

  1566. have

  1567. probably

  1568. not

  1569. been

  1570. super

  1571. clear

  1572. to

  1573. the

  1574. disciples

  1575. and

  1576. he's

  1577. going

  1578. to

  1579. fill

  1580. in

  1581. all

  1582. the

  1583. meaning

  1584. of

  1585. that

  1586. as

  1587. he

  1588. lives

  1589. his

  1590. life

  1591. and

  1592. death

  1593. and

  1594. resurrection

  1595. and

  1596. ascension

  1597. says

  1598. I

  1599. am

  1600. the

  1601. one

  1602. where

  1603. you

  1604. can

  1605. meet

  1606. God

  1607. I

  1608. am

  1609. the

  1610. one

  1611. who

  1612. can

  1613. show

  1614. you

  1615. the

  1616. way

  1617. to

  1618. heaven

  1619. this

  1620. is

  1621. the

  1622. savior

  1623. that

  1624. we

  1625. were

  1626. looking

  1627. for

  1628. and

  1629. he

  1630. invites

  1631. us

  1632. to

  1633. come

  1634. and

  1635. see

  1636. and

  1637. friends

  1638. we

  1639. know

  1640. the

  1641. rest

  1642. of

  1643. the

  1644. story

  1645. just

  1646. as

  1647. many

  1648. of

  1649. the

  1650. readers

  1651. of

  1652. John's

  1653. gospel

  1654. would

  1655. have

  1656. we

  1657. know

  1658. that

  1659. Jesus

  1660. lived

  1661. a

  1662. life

  1663. of

  1664. miraculous

  1665. power

  1666. of

  1667. great

  1668. humility

  1669. and

  1670. weakness

  1671. he

  1672. lived

  1673. a

  1674. life

  1675. of

  1676. love

  1677. and

  1678. he

  1679. brought

  1680. foretastes

  1681. of

  1682. the

  1683. kingdom

  1684. of

  1685. God

  1686. as

  1687. he

  1688. overcame

  1689. the

  1690. effects

  1691. of

  1692. sin

  1693. and

  1694. death

  1695. and

  1696. at

  1697. the

  1698. end

  1699. of

  1700. his

  1701. life

  1702. he

  1703. offered

  1704. himself

  1705. up

  1706. on

  1707. the

  1708. cross

  1709. as

  1710. a

  1711. sacrifice

  1712. and

  1713. a

  1714. substitute

  1715. for

  1716. our

  1717. sin

  1718. dying

  1719. in

  1720. our

  1721. place

  1722. so

  1723. that

  1724. we

  1725. might

  1726. no

  1727. longer

  1728. live

  1729. in

  1730. death

  1731. and

  1732. darkness

  1733. separate

  1734. from

  1735. God

  1736. without

  1737. access

  1738. to

  1739. him

  1740. but

  1741. that

  1742. through

  1743. the

  1744. cross

  1745. and

  1746. through

  1747. his

  1748. resurrection

  1749. we

  1750. now

  1751. actually

  1752. have

  1753. by

  1754. faith

  1755. in

  1756. Christ

  1757. access

  1758. to

  1759. God

  1760. himself

  1761. this

  1762. is

  1763. the

  1764. word

  1765. made

  1766. flesh

  1767. dwelling

  1768. and

  1769. living

  1770. in

  1771. this

  1772. earth

  1773. among

  1774. people

  1775. John

  1776. says

  1777. and I

  1778. write

  1779. all of

  1780. this

  1781. so that

  1782. you

  1783. may

  1784. believe

  1785. that

  1786. Jesus

  1787. is

  1788. the

  1789. Christ

  1790. the

  1791. son

  1792. of

  1793. God

  1794. and

  1795. that

  1796. by

  1797. believing

  1798. you

  1799. may

  1800. have

  1801. life

  1802. in

  1803. his

  1804. name

  1805. friends

  1806. if you

  1807. don't

  1808. have

  1809. life

  1810. in

  1811. Jesus

  1812. name

  1813. this

  1814. morning

  1815. I

  1816. invite

  1817. you

  1818. come

  1819. and

  1820. notice

  1821. too

  1822. how

  1823. often

  1824. just

  1825. as

  1826. it

  1827. was

  1828. true

  1829. for

  1830. me

  1831. with

  1832. my

  1833. friends

  1834. Billy

  1835. and

  1836. Becky

  1837. John

  1838. and

  1839. Kim

  1840. and

  1841. others

  1842. how

  1843. often

  1844. we

  1845. come

  1846. to

  1847. see

  1848. Jesus

  1849. through

  1850. one

  1851. another

  1852. and

  1853. if

  1854. we

  1855. do

  1856. know

  1857. Jesus

  1858. we

  1859. don't

  1860. have

  1861. to

  1862. explain

  1863. him

  1864. to

  1865. people

  1866. we

  1867. don't

  1868. have

  1869. to

  1870. beat

  1871. people

  1872. over

  1873. the

  1874. head

  1875. with

  1876. who

  1877. he

  1878. is

  1879. we

  1880. don't

  1881. have

  1882. to

  1883. destroy

  1884. we

  1885. don't

  1886. have

  1887. to

  1888. argue

  1889. people

  1890. into

  1891. the

  1892. kingdom

  1893. we

  1894. can

  1895. just

  1896. say

  1897. come

  1898. come

  1899. and

  1900. see

  1901. come

  1902. and

  1903. see

  1904. this

  1905. Jesus

  1906. we

  1907. can

  1908. invite

  1909. others

  1910. to

  1911. see

  1912. what

  1913. we

  1914. see

  1915. the

  1916. great

  1917. savior

  1918. the

  1919. one

  1920. we've

  1921. been

  1922. waiting

  1923. for

  1924. the

  1925. one

  1926. in

  1927. whom

  1928. we

  1929. have

  1930. access

  1931. to

  1932. God

  1933. I'm

  1934. going

  1935. to

  1936. pray

  1937. in

  1938. just

  1939. a

  1940. minute

  1941. I

  1942. don't

  1943. know

  1944. maybe

  1945. some

  1946. of

  1947. you

  1948. this

  1949. morning

  1950. are

  1951. hearing

  1952. Jesus

  1953. invitation

  1954. to

  1955. come

  1956. to

  1957. him

  1958. in

  1959. faith

  1960. this

  1961. morning

  1962. like

  1963. Nathaniel

  1964. maybe

  1965. you

  1966. have

  1967. heard

  1968. something

  1969. that

  1970. has

  1971. sparked

  1972. in

  1973. your

  1974. heart

  1975. belief

  1976. maybe

  1977. some

  1978. of

  1979. you

  1980. are

  1981. sparked

  1982. to

  1983. explore

  1984. further

  1985. I

  1986. would

  1987. love

  1988. to

  1989. talk

  1990. with

  1991. you

  1992. I'm

  1993. sure

  1994. the

  1995. other

  1996. pastors

  1997. or

  1998. maybe

  1999. your

  2000. friend

  2001. who

  2002. invited

  2003. you

  2004. to

  2005. church

  2006. can

  2007. talk

  2008. to

  2009. you

  2010. about

  2011. it

  2012. more

  2013. and for

  2014. those

  2015. of

  2016. us

  2017. who

  2018. have

  2019. seen

  2020. Jesus

  2021. for

  2022. many

  2023. many

  2024. years

  2025. may

  2026. we

  2027. be

  2028. refreshed

  2029. and

  2030. renewed

  2031. in

  2032. how

  2033. glorious

  2034. and

  2035. awesome

  2036. he

  2037. is

  2038. how

  2039. John

  2040. the

  2041. apostle

  2042. sketched

  2043. this

  2044. story

  2045. so that

  2046. we

  2047. might

  2048. be

  2049. reminded

  2050. of

  2051. the

  2052. greatness

  2053. of

  2054. Jesus

  2055. and

  2056. find

  2057. joy

  2058. in

  2059. him

  2060. so

  2061. let's

  2062. pray

  2063. together

  2064. Lord

  2065. we pray

  2066. this

  2067. morning

  2068. Lord

  2069. we pray

  2070. this

  2071. morning

  2072. that

  2073. you

  2074. would

  2075. by your

  2076. spirit

  2077. help us

  2078. to see

  2079. you

  2080. Jesus

  2081. as you

  2082. truly

  2083. are

  2084. Lord

  2085. to see

  2086. us

  2087. ourselves

  2088. as we

  2089. truly

  2090. are

  2091. lost

  2092. without

  2093. you

  2094. Lord

  2095. I pray

  2096. for those

  2097. who

  2098. you may

  2099. be

  2100. working

  2101. in this

  2102. morning

  2103. prompting

  2104. them

  2105. to

  2106. place

  2107. their

  2108. faith

  2109. in

  2110. Jesus

  2111. and

  2112. to

  2113. say

  2114. yes

  2115. I

  2116. will

  2117. follow

  2118. him

  2119. I

  2120. believe

  2121. he

  2122. is

  2123. the

  2124. son

  2125. of

  2126. God

  2127. the

  2128. only

  2129. savior

  2130. the

  2131. way

  2132. to

  2133. heaven

  2134. the

  2135. way

  2136. to

  2137. know

  2138. God

  2139. Lord

  2140. I

  2222. our

  2223. heart

  2224. places

  2225. in

  2226. our

  2230. love

  2231. for

  2232. you

  2233. and

  2234. our

  2235. allegiance
