  1. Turn with me in your Bibles, if you have one, or look along on the screen.

  2. We'll be reading from John chapter 2, verses 1 to 12,

    John 2:1–12

  3. as we continue in our series through this gospel account.

  4. John chapter 2, starting at verse 1.

    John 2 chapter mention

  5. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  6. And the mother of Jesus was there.

  7. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  8. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him,

  9. They have no wine.

  10. And Jesus said to her,

  11. Woman, what does this have to do with me?

  12. My hour has not yet come.

  13. His mother said to the servants,

  14. Do whatever he tells you.

  15. Now there were six stone water jars there,

  16. for the Jewish rites of purification,

  17. each holding twenty or thirty gallons.

  18. Jesus said to the servants,

  19. Fill the jars with water.

  20. And they filled them up to the brim.

  21. And he said to them,

  22. Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.

  23. So they took it.

  24. When the master of the feast tasted the water,

  25. now become wine,

  26. and did not know where it came from,

  27. though the servants who had drawn the water knew,

  28. the master of the feast called the bridegroom,

  29. and said to him,

  30. Everyone serves the good wine first,

  31. and when people have drunk freely,

  32. then the poor wine.

  33. But you have kept the good wine until now.

  34. This the first of his signs Jesus did at Cana in Galilee,

  35. and manifested his glory,

  36. and his disciples believed in him.

  37. After this, he went down to Capernaum,

  38. with his mother, and his brothers,

  39. and his disciples,

  40. and they stayed there for a few days.

  41. Things fall apart.

  42. The center cannot hold.

  43. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.

  44. The blood-dimmed tide is loosed,

  45. and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned.

  46. The best lack all conviction,

  47. while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

  48. Now, if you've never heard those words before,

  49. you might think somebody wrote them

  50. at some point in the past year,

  51. to describe something that happened.

  52. But actually, these words were written

  53. a hundred years ago, in 1919,

  54. by the Irish poet W.B. Yeats.

  55. He was writing in the aftermath

  56. of the First World War,

  57. that had left 20 million dead

  58. and 21 million wounded.

  59. He was writing as political tensions

  60. were high in his own country,

  61. leading to the Irish War for Independence.

  62. And he was writing in a time

  63. of personal distress related to a pandemic.

  64. His pregnant wife was slowly recovering

  65. from a bad case of the Spanish flu

  66. that nearly took her life.

  67. But over the last century,

  68. Yeats' words have resonated with many people.

  69. They've been quoted or alluded to

  70. in books, songs, essays,

  71. novels, poems, movies.

  72. Because isn't this what we often see

  73. when we look around at the world?

  74. We see things falling apart.

  75. We see the world around us

  76. gradually or even more quickly unraveling.

  77. And that's the natural course of things

  78. in this fallen world.

  79. Empires rise,

  80. and then eventually they fall.

  81. Schools of thought

  82. become all the rage for a time,

  83. and then they fade

  84. into the footnotes of history.

  85. Great buildings are constructed,

  86. and then they begin to deteriorate.

  87. Even on a personal level,

  88. every one of us is living in a body

  89. that is in the process of aging,

  90. decaying, and eventually dying.

  91. Running low and one day running out.

  92. Even the best things in this world

  93. will come to an end.

  94. But the story we're looking at this morning

  95. shows us that Jesus Christ came

  96. into an unraveling world

  97. to bring new and everlasting joy.

  98. So let's walk through this story together,

  99. and then we'll consider what it means.

  100. So first, let's look at the story

  101. of this wedding at Cana.

  102. Right?

  103. At the beginning, we see Jesus

  104. and his family members

  105. and his disciples invited to a wedding.

  106. Perhaps it was a family relative

  107. or a family friend.

  108. But at some point soon,

  109. they're confronted with a miniature crisis.

  110. The wedding is falling apart

  111. because the wine has run out.

  112. Now, let me give a little historical context

  113. to put this situation in perspective.

  114. Three bits of historical context.

  115. First, back in the day,

  116. wedding celebrations often lasted for seven days.

  117. Now, not everyone would stay for the whole time,

  118. but a wedding was an occasion of great joy.

  119. And people would normally invite

  120. as many guests, family, friends, neighbors,

  121. distinguished personalities as possible.

  122. And it would be an extended feast.

  123. Second, the groom was the designated host.

  124. So the groom and his family

  125. were responsible to provide food and drink

  126. for all the guests.

  127. And back then, hospitality

  128. was a very important cultural value.

  129. I grew up at my mom's side of the family is Italian.

  130. And, you know, I mean,

  131. when you go to an Italian household, right?

  132. You know, grandma asked you,

  133. you've already had four portions,

  134. but do you want a fifth, right?

  135. Like, it's just the expectation.

  136. You don't ever run out of food

  137. in an Italian family.

  138. And it's the same thing back in the Middle East, right?

  139. You would never run out of food

  140. or drink for your guests.

  141. That would be extremely embarrassing.

  142. In fact, there's even some evidence

  143. that in a situation like this,

  144. the bride's family could have pursued a lawsuit

  145. against the groom and his family

  146. for failing to adequately provide

  147. for the guests at the wedding

  148. and dishonoring the bride in the process.

  149. Sounds a little crazy to us,

  150. but it underlines how important it was.

  151. That hosting hospitality role.

  152. Third, wine was the main beverage

  153. served at weddings.

  154. So wedding celebrations would last seven days.

  155. The groom was the designated host

  156. and wine was the main beverage.

  157. Now, back then,

  158. wine was normally mixed with large amounts of water.

  159. So it had a much lower alcohol content

  160. than it does today.

  161. Even less than beer today.

  162. So guests at a wedding

  163. could drink quite a lot of wine.

  164. It would keep them hydrated

  165. and they would not be immediately

  166. getting very drunk.

  167. But wine was seen as an essential beverage

  168. for celebrations.

  169. That was sort of what was expected.

  170. So if the wine ran out,

  171. it meant two things.

  172. First, it meant the party would be over early.

  173. And maybe some of those guests

  174. who might have come later on

  175. during those seven days

  176. would have not even got to participate at all.

  177. But it also meant that the new husband's reputation

  178. in the village,

  179. especially a small village like Cana in Galilee,

  180. would be damaged for years to come.

  181. He's the one who was a stingy, skimpy host

  182. and didn't even have enough

  183. to properly provide for his guests.

  184. So that's the problem that we see

  185. at the beginning of the story.

  186. But when the problem is brought to Jesus' attention,

  187. Jesus seems initially reluctant to do anything.

  188. Mary comes to Jesus and says,

  189. they have no wine.

  190. Now, it's not clear exactly

  191. what Mary was expecting Jesus to do.

  192. John tells us in verse 11

  193. that this was Jesus' first miracle.

  194. So presumably, Mary wasn't used to seeing Jesus

  195. perform miracles every time something happened

  196. or there was a need.

  197. But it is likely that by this time,

  198. Mary was a widow.

  199. Why, you might say,

  200. well, Joseph and Mary appear together

  201. in the Gospel accounts when Jesus is born

  202. and when Jesus is a child,

  203. when he's 12 years old.

  204. For example, going to the Passover

  205. and the temple together.

  206. But when Jesus is an adult,

  207. Mary continues to appear in the Gospel

  208. several times,

  209. but Joseph is never present.

  210. And so many commentators think

  211. that by this time,

  212. Joseph had died

  213. and Mary was raising her family alone.

  214. And so perhaps in the absence of Joseph,

  215. Mary had come to depend on Jesus,

  216. her oldest son,

  217. to help her out in a pinch,

  218. to help her find a way

  219. through hard situations.

  220. And so she comes to him

  221. and sort of says,

  222. what do we do here, Jesus?

  223. But in verse 4,

  224. Jesus' response is a little unexpected.

  225. Woman, what does this have to do with me?

  226. My hour has not yet come.

  227. Now that term woman

  228. was not a rude term.

  229. It was a respectful term,

  230. sort of like ma'am,

  231. but it was not a term

  232. that anyone ever used

  233. in the ancient world

  234. to address their mother.

  235. It was not an affectionate term.

  236. It was not a term

  237. that you would normally use

  238. when speaking to your mom.

  239. And every other time in the Bible

  240. that somebody says,

  241. what does this have to do with me?

  242. The expression always indicates

  243. some kind of challenge or rebuke.

  244. So there are actually

  245. at least four times

  246. in the Gospel of John

  247. when somebody comes to Jesus

  248. with a request

  249. or with some advice

  250. and initially

  251. he pushes back against it.

  252. So there's a situation here

  253. in chapter 4.

  254. There's an official at Capernaum

  255. who comes to Jesus and says,

  256. come down to my house

  257. before my son dies.

  258. And Jesus says,

  259. no, you go back home.

  260. Or in chapter 7,

  261. Jesus' brothers come to him

  262. and they say to him,

  263. you should go to Judea.

  264. You should show yourself

  265. to the world.

  266. And Jesus says,

  267. nope, time's not right yet.

  268. And in chapter 11,

  269. Mary and Martha

  270. send word to Jesus,

  271. come, Lazarus is sick.

  272. Come and heal him.

  273. And Jesus stays where he is

  274. for two more days.

  275. It's striking if you compare

  276. all these incidents.

  277. People come to Jesus

  278. with what seem like

  279. legitimate needs and requests

  280. and initially Jesus seems

  281. to push back against them.

  282. And often we think,

  283. if I'm in a pinch

  284. and I'm turning to Jesus for help

  285. and if my request is reasonable,

  286. he should come right away

  287. and fix my situation.

  288. And we might think that

  289. of all people that could ask him for help,

  290. at least Jesus would do so for his mom.

  291. But John wants us to see

  292. that Jesus does not act

  293. on our timetable.

  294. Jesus will not be controlled

  295. or manipulated by any human being,

  296. not even by his mother.

  297. Jesus came to earth

  298. to carry out the will of God,

  299. his heavenly father.

  300. Not the will of any other human being.

  301. So sometimes we may come to Jesus

  302. with a problem

  303. or a situation

  304. or a request

  305. and he may seem to push back

  306. on that request

  307. or not to respond immediately.

  308. But even if Jesus

  309. doesn't initially respond

  310. in the way that we desire

  311. or hope,

  312. John wants us to know

  313. that he does care

  314. and he will act

  315. on behalf of those

  316. who wait for him.

  317. So every one of those four times

  318. that Jesus initially pushes back

  319. on someone's request

  320. in the Gospel of John,

  321. he actually comes through for them,

  322. but often in a way

  323. they don't expect.

  324. So with the official

  325. who comes to him

  326. and says,

  327. please come down to my house

  328. and heal my son,

  329. Jesus says,

  330. no, you go home.

  331. And guess what?

  332. When he gets home,

  333. his son is healed.

  334. Jesus can heal remotely.

  335. Okay?

  336. There's even a biblical example

  337. of Jesus' ministry

  338. is not hindered

  339. by physical distance.

  340. When Jesus' brothers

  341. come to him and say,

  342. show your glory to the world,

  343. Jesus says,

  344. no, not now,

  345. but then he does go up

  346. to that feast later on

  347. and of course

  348. he will show his glory

  349. to the world

  350. through his death

  351. and resurrection

  352. and through the sending

  353. of the Holy Spirit

  354. in ways that are

  355. far more glorious

  356. than they would have

  357. ever imagined.

  358. And of course,

  359. he doesn't just heal

  360. Lazarus from sickness,

  361. he comes and raises

  362. him from the dead.

  363. And here,

  364. he turns water

  365. into wine.

  366. We don't know exactly

  367. what Mary was expecting,

  368. but surely

  369. this would have surpassed

  370. anyone's normal expectations.

  371. And Mary here

  372. is an example of faith,

  373. an example of the posture

  374. that we should adopt

  375. toward Jesus

  376. even when he seems

  377. to not respond

  378. immediately to our requests.

  379. She's not turned off

  380. by Jesus' word of rebuke.

  381. She doesn't go away

  382. in a huff.

  383. No, she says to the servants,

  384. do whatever he tells you.

  385. Now, Jesus didn't tell Mary

  386. in advance

  387. what he was going to do

  388. or how he was going

  389. to handle the situation,

  390. but she says,

  391. just do whatever he says.

  392. I trust him.

  393. I trust him.

  394. And you should too.

  395. You see,

  396. that's what faith is.

  397. We may not always

  398. understand why

  399. Jesus does the things

  400. he does when he does them,

  401. but faith is trusting

  402. that he's worthy

  403. of our trust

  404. and obedience.

  405. obedience.

  406. Now, the story goes on.

  407. Jesus says to the servants,

  408. fill these six stone water jars.

  409. And of course,

  410. like Mary,

  411. the servants probably are like,

  412. what?

  413. What's,

  414. what exactly?

  415. Why?

  416. What are you going to do?

  417. How does this relate?

  418. You know,

  419. you're not taking up

  420. a collection

  421. and going out

  422. to the store.

  423. You're telling us

  424. to fill these huge water jars.

  425. But no,

  426. they just go ahead

  427. and do it.

  428. Right?

  429. They don't seem to,

  430. they don't stop

  431. and say,

  432. well,

  433. I'm not going to do it

  434. unless you tell me

  435. why you're telling me

  436. to do this.

  437. No,

  438. they just go ahead

  439. and do it.

  440. And then Jesus says,

  441. draw some water

  442. and take it to the

  443. master of the feast.

  444. Now,

  445. the master of the feast

  446. was the head waiter.

  447. So,

  448. the master of the feast

  449. would have been

  450. the person responsible

  451. for seeing

  452. for all the food

  453. and drink

  454. and for all the sort

  455. of catering

  456. associated with

  457. the wedding.

  458. And the master

  459. of the feast

  460. would have been

  461. in charge of

  462. supervising

  463. the rest of the servants.

  464. So,

  465. the servants go

  466. to their boss

  467. and say,

  468. here's this,

  469. here's,

  470. here's this water

  471. that Jesus told us

  472. to bring to you

  473. and he tastes it

  474. and he calls

  475. the bridegroom.

  476. Now,

  477. again,

  478. the bridegroom,

  479. the groom was responsible

  480. for providing

  481. all of the refreshments,

  482. all of the food

  483. and drink.

  484. So,

  485. that's why he goes

  486. to the bridegroom

  487. because the bridegroom

  488. is supposed to be

  489. in charge

  490. and he says,

  491. wow,

  492. nobody else

  493. does this.

  494. You've saved

  495. the best wine

  496. for now.

  497. Usually,

  498. the quality

  499. just goes down

  500. and down

  501. and down

  502. over time

  503. as people

  504. have been around

  505. for longer

  506. and longer.

  507. you've saved

  508. the best

  509. for last.

  510. And that's the

  511. climax of the story.

  512. You

  513. have kept

  514. the good wine

  515. until now.

  516. The end of verse 10.

  517. So,

  518. that's how the story

  519. goes.

  520. Now,

  521. let's consider

  522. what it means.

  523. And John

  524. tells us

  525. what it means

  526. in verse 11

  527. because he says,

  528. Jesus manifested

  529. his glory

  530. by doing this.

  531. How did Jesus

  532. manifest his glory?

  533. Well,

  534. at one level,

  535. Jesus manifested

  536. his glory

  537. very quietly

  538. and behind the scenes

  539. in this story.

  540. All right,

  541. verse 9 says,

  542. the master

  543. of the feast,

  544. the head waiter,

  545. didn't know

  546. where the wine

  547. had come from

  548. even though

  549. he thought

  550. that the groom

  551. deserved the credit

  552. for it.

  553. And aside

  554. from the servants

  555. and Jesus' mother

  556. and his own disciples,

  557. it's not clear

  558. who else

  559. at the wedding

  560. even knew

  561. exactly what

  562. had happened.

  563. Many of the guests

  564. probably

  565. didn't even

  566. know that the wine

  567. had run out

  568. or where

  569. the new wine

  570. came from.

  571. You see,

  572. sometimes in the Gospels,

  573. Jesus acts

  574. quietly

  575. and behind the scenes,

  576. discreetly,

  577. without making

  578. a public show

  579. of what he's doing

  580. and sometimes

  581. even tells people

  582. don't make a big deal

  583. of this right now,

  584. right yet.

  585. Here,

  586. Jesus makes up

  587. and fills in

  588. for the deficiencies

  589. of this unknown bridegroom

  590. and he enables

  591. the party to go on

  592. for a few more days.

  593. He enables

  594. the groom's honor

  595. in the village

  596. to be preserved

  597. for a few

  598. more years.

  599. And you know,

  600. the Bible says

  601. that Jesus Christ

  602. in union

  603. with God the Father

  604. and God the Holy Spirit

  605. continues

  606. to sustain

  607. this fallen world

  608. by his common grace.

  609. Working behind

  610. the scenes

  611. discreetly

  612. and quietly

  613. in ways

  614. that most of us

  615. never even

  616. notice

  617. or know about

  618. to hold together

  619. this world

  620. that otherwise

  621. would have fallen apart

  622. a long time ago.

  623. long ago

  624. Augustine,

  625. the church father,

  626. said,

  627. we look at this miracle

  628. and we think

  629. it's amazing.

  630. Jesus turned water

  631. into wine.

  632. But Augustine says,

  633. look around

  634. at the world.

  635. God does the same

  636. thing each year.

  637. The clouds

  638. pour forth water

  639. which sinks

  640. into the soil

  641. which makes

  642. the grapevines grow

  643. which human beings

  644. make into grape juice

  645. and wine.

  646. He says,

  647. we've just gotten

  648. so used to that process

  649. that we don't marvel

  650. at it anymore.

  651. But Augustine wrote,

  652. who is there

  653. that considers

  654. the works of God

  655. whereby this whole world

  656. is governed

  657. and regulated

  658. who is not amazed

  659. and overwhelmed?

  660. When we look at

  661. how our human bodies

  662. function,

  663. even if you study

  664. how

  665. when you get a cut

  666. how your blood

  667. clots

  668. and yet doesn't

  669. completely

  670. clot all of the blood

  671. in your whole system

  672. and then how your skin

  673. repairs itself.

  674. It's an amazing process.

  675. It's quite complicated

  676. and

  677. none of us,

  678. almost none of us

  679. except maybe the med students here

  680. really think about that

  681. and really give attention

  682. to that.

  683. But it's something

  684. we depend on every day.

  685. Otherwise,

  686. every time you get

  687. a little cut

  688. you'd bleed your

  689. entire blood out

  690. and you'd be dead.

  691. But there's all kinds

  692. of things that are amazing

  693. that God does

  694. to sustain

  695. this broken

  696. and fallen world

  697. on a day-to-day basis.

  698. There's all kinds

  699. of things that God

  700. does behind the scenes

  701. in our own lives

  702. to preserve us

  703. from troubles

  704. that we don't even realize

  705. that we might otherwise

  706. be brought down by.

  707. Now, while that's important,

  708. that's not all

  709. that John wants us to see.

  710. The main point

  711. of this story

  712. is not how Jesus

  713. works behind the scenes

  714. to sustain the world

  715. by his common grace.

  716. No, John says

  717. this is the first

  718. of Jesus' signs.

  719. Think about

  720. what is a sign.

  721. Well, a sign

  722. points

  723. to the reality

  724. of something greater.

  725. And this is the word

  726. that John uses

  727. most frequently

  728. to describe

  729. Jesus' miracles.

  730. He doesn't use

  731. the word wonder,

  732. sort of something

  733. that emphasizes

  734. how astonished

  735. we are at it.

  736. He says

  737. they're signs.

  738. They're pointing

  739. to the reality

  740. of who Jesus is.

  741. He wants us

  742. to see something

  743. about who Jesus is

  744. in every one

  745. of the miracles

  746. Jesus does.

  747. He does seven of them

  748. throughout the gospel.

  749. So every time

  750. Jesus does a miracle

  751. that is recorded

  752. in John's gospel,

  753. we need to ask

  754. what is this sign

  755. pointing to

  756. about Jesus himself?

  757. And the answer

  758. to that question here

  759. is that John

  760. wants us to see

  761. that Jesus

  762. is the true

  763. bridegroom

  764. who has come

  765. to establish

  766. a new and better

  767. covenant

  768. with his people.

  769. Now you might say,

  770. how do I get that

  771. from this story?

  772. Well,

  773. John gives us

  774. three hints

  775. that point us

  776. in that direction.

  777. verse 1,

  778. John gives

  779. a subtle hint

  780. indicating that

  781. Jesus has come

  782. to begin

  783. something new.

  784. And most of us

  785. might miss this hint,

  786. but when we look

  787. closer,

  788. it is there.

  789. When it talks

  790. about the timing

  791. of the wedding

  792. being on the third

  793. day.

  794. Now,

  795. two weeks ago,

  796. Pastor Nick

  797. pointed out

  798. that the first words

  799. of John's gospel

  800. are also the first words

  801. of the book of Genesis

  802. in the Old Testament,

  803. in the beginning.

  804. And if we look

  805. more closely,

  806. we might notice

  807. another potential

  808. parallel between

  809. the first two chapters

  810. of Genesis

  811. and the first two

  812. chapters of John.

  813. They both begin

  814. with a week

  815. of events

  816. culminating

  817. in a wedding.

  818. So the book

  819. of Genesis

  820. describes a week

  821. of God's creation

  822. culminating in

  823. the wedding

  824. of Adam and Eve

  825. when God brings

  826. Eve to Adam.

  827. And there's this

  828. sort of wedding

  829. ceremony

  830. in the Garden

  831. of Eden.

  832. And John

  833. also begins

  834. with a week

  835. of God's action,

  836. a week of Jesus

  837. coming on the scene

  838. in chapter 1.

  839. So four times

  840. in chapter 1,

  841. verse 29,

  842. it says,

  843. the next day.

  844. Verse 35,

  845. the next day again.

  846. Verse 39,

  847. they stayed with him

  848. that day.

  849. Verse 43,

  850. the next day.

  851. And then chapter 2,

  852. verse 1,

  853. on the third day.

  854. A week has passed

  855. and guess where

  856. we find ourselves?

  857. At a wedding.

  858. And so if you

  859. had been familiar

  860. with that pattern

  861. in Genesis

  862. and you see this

  863. pattern in John,

  864. you think,

  865. huh,

  866. that's an interesting

  867. echo.

  868. John must be saying

  869. that Jesus has come

  870. to make a new

  871. beginning,

  872. to start something

  873. new.

  874. And you might

  875. even think,

  876. maybe he's

  877. the new Adam

  878. over a new creation.

  879. Well,

  880. verse 6,

  881. John gives us

  882. another hint

  883. indicating that

  884. Jesus has come

  885. to establish

  886. not just something

  887. new,

  888. but something

  889. better.

  890. Something better

  891. than the old

  892. covenant provided.

  893. John mentions

  894. that these six

  895. large stone

  896. water jars

  897. were used

  898. for Jewish

  899. rites of

  900. purification.

  901. purification.

  902. That is,

  903. they represented

  904. the rituals

  905. of the old

  906. covenant.

  907. But Jesus

  908. has come to

  909. bring something

  910. new.

  911. Right?

  912. Jesus says,

  913. fill them to

  914. the brim.

  915. In other words,

  916. they've come

  917. to their

  918. fulfillment.

  919. And Jesus

  920. has come to

  921. bring something

  922. even better.

  923. A kind of

  924. purification that

  925. wasn't previously

  926. possible,

  927. a kind of joy

  928. that won't run

  929. out.

  930. But the

  931. clearest hint

  932. is in verse

  933. 10 at the

  934. climax of the

  935. story,

  936. when the

  937. master of the

  938. feast says to

  939. the bridegroom,

  940. you have

  941. kept the good

  942. wine until

  943. now.

  944. Now,

  945. think about

  946. that statement.

  947. We know

  948. that the

  949. master of the

  950. feast is giving

  951. the credit to

  952. the bridegroom

  953. that he should

  954. be giving to

  955. Jesus.

  956. Right?

  957. Because the

  958. unknown bridegroom

  959. has actually

  960. failed to be a

  961. proper host to

  962. his guests.

  963. he doesn't

  964. deserve any

  965. credit at all.

  966. But where the

  967. unknown bridegroom

  968. failed,

  969. Jesus has

  970. provided all

  971. that was

  972. needed.

  973. And more,

  974. even something

  975. even better.

  976. So Jesus

  977. hasn't only

  978. fulfilled what

  979. was already

  980. expected of a

  981. host, he has

  982. surpassed all

  983. expectations.

  984. His provisions

  985. are unquestionably

  986. superior.

  987. Jesus is the

  988. true and better

  989. host, the

  990. true and better

  991. bridegroom.

  992. And if we

  993. had missed all

  994. of those hints,

  995. in chapter 3,

  996. John says even

  997. more explicitly,

  998. if you look in

  999. chapter 3,

  1000. verse 28,

  1001. John the

  1002. Baptist says,

  1003. I'm not the

  1004. Christ, I'm not

  1005. the Messiah, I've

  1006. been sent before

  1007. him, and in the

  1008. next verse he

  1009. compares himself

  1010. to the friend of

  1011. the bridegroom,

  1012. who rejoices

  1013. greatly at the

  1014. bridegroom's

  1015. voice.

  1016. And John says,

  1017. he must increase,

  1018. but I must

  1019. decrease.

  1020. So John the

  1021. Baptist points to

  1022. Jesus and says,

  1023. the long-awaited

  1024. bridegroom has

  1025. finally arrived.

  1026. So that's what

  1027. John wants us

  1028. to see in this

  1029. story about

  1030. Jesus.

  1031. That's what this

  1032. sign is pointing

  1033. to about Jesus,

  1034. that he's the

  1035. true and better

  1036. host, the true

  1037. and better

  1038. bridegroom who

  1039. has come for

  1040. his people.

  1041. You see,

  1042. throughout the

  1043. Old Testament,

  1044. the prophets

  1045. had spoken of a

  1046. future day when

  1047. the Messiah would

  1048. come and when

  1049. feasting would

  1050. abound.

  1051. We heard one of

  1052. those prophecies

  1053. read earlier to

  1054. us from Amos.

  1055. Amos said,

  1056. the kingdom of

  1057. David will be

  1058. rebuilt and the

  1059. mountains shall

  1060. drip sweet wine

  1061. and all the

  1062. hills shall flow

  1063. with it.

  1064. There will be

  1065. wine and milk

  1066. and honey in

  1067. abundance.

  1068. It's imagery of

  1069. an unending

  1070. feast where

  1071. Jeremiah says,

  1072. they will rejoice

  1073. in the bounty of

  1074. the Lord,

  1075. the grain,

  1076. the new wine,

  1077. and the olive oil.

  1078. They will be like

  1079. a well-watered

  1080. garden and they

  1081. will sorrow no

  1082. more.

  1083. Jeremiah 31,

  1084. 12.

  1085. And just a few

  1086. verses later,

  1087. Jeremiah wrote,

  1088. behold,

  1089. the days are

  1090. coming when I

  1091. will make a new

  1092. covenant with the

  1093. house of Israel

  1094. and the house of

  1095. Judah.

  1096. Not like the

  1097. covenant that I

  1098. made with their

  1099. fathers when I

  1100. brought them out

  1101. of Egypt,

  1102. they broke that

  1103. covenant though I

  1104. was their

  1105. husband.

  1106. But this time he

  1107. says,

  1108. I will write my

  1109. laws on their

  1110. hearts and I

  1111. will forgive their

  1112. sins and remember

  1113. their wickedness

  1114. no more.

  1115. You see,

  1116. Jesus is that

  1117. long-awaited

  1118. Messiah,

  1119. that long-awaited

  1120. bridegroom who

  1121. came to establish

  1122. a new and

  1123. better covenant,

  1124. who came to

  1125. bring new and

  1126. everlasting joy to

  1127. the hearts of his

  1128. people.

  1129. That's what John

  1130. wants us to see.

  1131. But you know,

  1132. when we read this

  1133. story and if we

  1134. see that,

  1135. we might ask a

  1136. question.

  1137. we might say,

  1138. but how does

  1139. Jesus seal the

  1140. deal?

  1141. Jesus doesn't,

  1142. you know,

  1143. this is somebody

  1144. else's wedding.

  1145. Jesus doesn't

  1146. establish a new

  1147. and better covenant

  1148. with his people by

  1149. turning water into

  1150. wine at somebody

  1151. else's wedding in

  1152. Cana.

  1153. Nope.

  1154. But remember what

  1155. Jesus said in verse

  1156. four.

  1157. He said,

  1158. my hour has not

  1159. yet come.

  1160. And nine times

  1161. Jesus refers to

  1162. his hour in the

  1163. gospel of John.

  1164. And every time

  1165. he's referring to

  1166. the hour of his

  1167. death on the cross

  1168. at Calvary.

  1169. That's where

  1170. Jesus would seal

  1171. the deal.

  1172. That's where the

  1173. glory of his

  1174. saving love would

  1175. be revealed.

  1176. That's where he

  1177. paid the price so

  1178. that we could be

  1179. ours or he

  1180. could be ours and

  1181. we could be his

  1182. forever.

  1183. You see, at every

  1184. wedding, two people

  1185. make a promise to

  1186. one another.

  1187. And they basically

  1188. say, what's mine is

  1189. yours and what's

  1190. yours is mine.

  1191. For better, for

  1192. worse, for richer,

  1193. for poorer, in

  1194. sickness or in

  1195. health.

  1196. And that's the

  1197. promise Jesus made

1198. to us, to all who

  1199. would turn and

  1200. believe in him.

  1201. John 19

  1202. describes the

  1203. hour of Jesus

  1204. crucifixion.

  1205. And it says

  1206. this, as Jesus

  1207. was hanging on

  1208. the cross, it

  1209. says, Jesus,

  1210. knowing that all

  1211. was now finished,

  1212. said to fulfill

  1213. the scripture,

  1214. I thirst.

  1215. A jar full of

  1216. sour wine stood

  1217. there.

  1218. So they put a

  1219. sponge full of the

  1220. sour wine on a

  1221. hyssop branch and

  1222. held it to his

  1223. mouth.

  1224. When Jesus had

  1225. received the sour

  1226. wine, he said,

  1227. it is finished.

  1228. And he bowed his

  1229. head and gave up

  1230. his spirit.

  1231. And he

  1232. you see, what

  1233. does John want

  1234. us to see there?

  1235. He wants us to

  1236. see that Jesus

  1237. drank the cup of

  1238. our bitterness so

  1239. that we could

  1240. drink of his

  1241. everlasting joy.

  1242. He received

  1243. condemnation in

  1244. full so that we

  1245. could receive

  1246. forgiveness in

  1247. full.

  1248. He took on all

  1249. that was ours so

  1250. that we might

  1251. enjoy all that is

  1252. his now and

  1253. forever.

  1254. forever.

  1255. Friends, that's

  1256. the good news of

  1257. the gospel.

  1258. And it brings

  1259. joy like nothing

  1260. else in this world

  1261. does.

  1262. To know that

  1263. Jesus is yours

  1264. and we are

  1265. his.

  1266. That will carry

  1267. us through all

  1268. of our days.

  1269. So come to

  1270. Jesus, receive

  1271. his promise today,

  1272. taste and see

  1273. that he is good.

  1274. Let's pray.

  1275. Let's pray.

  1276. Let's pray.

  1277. Let's pray.

  1278. Let's pray.

  1279. Let's pray.

  1280. Father, thank

  1281. you for the

  1282. grace that you

  1283. show us day

  1284. by day in

  1285. sustaining this

  1286. world, in

  1287. sustaining our

  1288. bodies, in

  1289. giving us moments

  1290. and days and

  1291. weeks of joy and

  1292. laughter.

  1293. Thank you for

  1294. all the ways that

  1295. you keep this

  1296. world from

  1297. immediately falling

  1298. apart as it

  1299. would do without

  1300. you.

  1301. Lord, thank

  1302. you not only

  1303. for that.

  1304. Thank you for

  1305. sending Jesus to

  1306. unite us to

  1307. yourself, to

  1308. bring us new

  1309. and everlasting

  1310. joy, to renew

  1311. us and heal us

  1312. from the inside

  1313. out.

  1314. Lord, we pray

  1325. we will have

  1326. for all

  1327. eternity.
