    John 9 chapter mention

  8. Let's pray together.

  9. Father, as the psalmist prayed, we pray this morning that you would open our eyes,

  10. that we may behold wondrous things out of your word.

  11. By your spirit, we pray that you would allow us to see with the eyes of faith

  12. the wonder and truth of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

  13. And in seeing him, Father, may we worship him this morning.

  14. And in worshiping him, may we become more like him.

  15. And in becoming like him, would we know true and lasting joy.

  16. Father, we pray this in Jesus' name.

  17. Amen.

  18. Amen.

  19. Well, let me read for us John chapter 9.

    John 9 chapter mention

  20. And he, that is Jesus, passed by.

  21. He saw a man blind from birth.

  22. And the disciples asked him,

  23. Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?

  24. Jesus answered,

  25. It was not that this man sinned or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.

  26. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day.

  27. Night is coming when no one can work.

  28. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

  29. Having said these things, Jesus spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva.

  30. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud and said to him,

  31. Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which means sent.

  32. So he went and washed and came back seeing.

  33. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying,

  34. Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?

  35. Some said, It is he.

  36. Others said, No, but he is like him.

  37. He kept saying, I am the man.

  38. So they said to him, Then how were your eyes opened?

  39. He answered, The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me,

  40. Go to Siloam and wash.

  41. So I went and washed and received my sight.

  42. They said to him, Where is he?

  43. He said, I don't know.

  44. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.

  45. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

  46. So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight.

  47. And he said to them, He put mud on my eyes and I washed and I see.

  48. Some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.

  49. But others said, How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?

  50. And there was a division among them.

  51. So they said again to the blind man, What do you say about him since he has opened your eyes?

  52. He said, He is a prophet.

  53. The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight and asked him,

  54. Is this your son who you say was born blind?

  55. How then does he now see?

  56. His parents answered, We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.

  57. But how he now sees, we do not know.

  58. Nor do we know who opened his eyes.

  59. Ask him.

  60. He is of age.

  61. He will speak for himself.

  62. His parents said these things because they feared the Jews.

  63. For the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.

  64. Therefore, his parents said, He is of age.

  65. Ask him.

  66. So for the second time, they called the man who had been blind and said to him,

  67. Give glory to God.

  68. We know that this man is a sinner.

  69. He answered, Whether he is a sinner, I do not know.

  70. Now, one thing I do know, though I was blind, now I see.

  71. They said to him, What did he do to you?

  72. How did he open your eyes?

  73. He answered them, I have told you already and you would not listen.

  74. Why do you want to hear it again?

  75. Do you also want to become his disciples?

  76. And they reviled him, saying, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

  77. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.

  78. The man answered, Why, this is an amazing thing.

  79. You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.

  80. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him.

  81. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.

  82. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.

  83. They answered him, You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?

  84. And they cast him out.

  85. Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said, Do you believe in the Son of Man?

  86. He answered, And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?

  87. Jesus said to him, You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.

  88. He said, Lord, I believe.

  89. And he worshipped him.

  90. Jesus said, For judgment I came into this world,

  91. that those who do not see may see,

  92. and those who see may become blind.

  93. Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things and said to him,

  94. Are we also blind?

  95. Jesus said to them,

  96. If you were blind, you would have no guilt.

  97. But now that you say we see, your guilt remains.

  98. So, there you are,

  99. sleeping in comfortably on a Saturday morning,

  100. when suddenly,

  101. mom or dad,

  102. or your spouse,

  103. or your roommate,

  104. walks into the room,

  105. pulls back your Ikea room darkening curtains,

  106. and says with a smile,

  107. Time to get up!

  108. And the light that comes flooding through the window

  109. into your comfortable, sleepy Saturday morning

  110. is so bright,

  111. so sudden,

  112. so overwhelming,

  113. that for a moment,

  114. you can't see a thing.

  115. You are, as they say,

  116. blinded by the light.

  117. Jesus, again, in our passage,

  118. calls himself, in verse 5,

  119. the light of the world.

  120. And as we see,

  121. as this passage unfolds,

  122. that this light that Jesus is

  123. has a two-fold effect.

  124. On the one hand,

  125. Jesus causes the blind to see.

  126. But on the other hand,

  127. like the curtains being torn open

  128. on your lazy Saturday,

  129. Jesus also causes the seeing

  130. to become blind.

  131. And at the heart of the passage

  132. is this question.

  133. Coming face-to-face with Jesus,

  134. will we humbly admit

  135. our spiritual blindness

  136. and receive sight?

  137. Or will we proudly say

  138. that we see just fine

  139. without Him

  140. and so remain blind?

  141. So this is our outline.

  142. This is our sermon today.

  143. Jesus makes the blind to see,

  144. and He makes the seeing blind.

  145. So let's look at the first part

  146. of that then.

  147. Jesus being the light of the world,

  148. because He's the light of the world,

  149. the blind are made to see.

  150. Now in the first seven verses

  151. of the chapter,

  152. John recounts Jesus' healing

  153. of this man born blind.

  154. But notice how the disciples,

  155. notice how the disciples

  156. want to explain

  157. the man's disability.

  158. How do they do that?

  159. Well, they say there must be,

  160. there must be some particular sin

  161. that caused this.

  162. Either this man himself

  163. sinned in the womb,

  164. which some Jews at the time

  165. believed could be possible,

  166. or maybe they think

  167. his parents sinned in some way,

  168. and that's why he's blind.

  169. But notice that Jesus

  170. rejects this line of thinking.

  171. Now of course,

  172. sickness and disability

  173. and death

  174. were not how God

  175. created the world to be.

  176. all of those things

  177. flooded into God's good creation

  178. because of the fall.

  179. So in a very general sense,

  180. we can say that sickness

  181. and disability and death

  182. and brokenness and decay,

  183. all of those things in the world

  184. are a result of sin in general,

  185. capital S sin, the fall.

  186. But to point to a particular

  187. individual instance of sin

  188. as a cause of a particular

  189. individual instance of suffering,

  190. Jesus says,

  191. no,

  192. that's not how this works.

  193. Notice what he says.

  194. He says,

  195. it was not that this man sinned

  196. or his parents,

  197. but

  198. that the works of God

  199. might be displayed in him.

  200. In other words,

  201. this man's blindness

  202. was not a sign

  203. that he was a greater sinner

  204. than other people.

  205. No, in fact,

  206. this man's blindness

  207. was going to be

  208. the very place

  209. where God's glory

  210. shone through his life.

  211. Now, pause there

  212. for a moment with me.

  213. Do you hear what Jesus is saying?

  214. Our places

  215. of greatest weakness

  216. and vulnerability,

  217. that's where God's glory

  218. just might shine

  219. through our lives

  220. the brightest.

  221. I wonder,

  222. where do you feel

  223. weak

  224. or vulnerable

  225. or low

  226. this morning?

  227. Maybe like the man

  228. in this passage,

  229. it's a physical limitation

  230. or disability,

  231. or perhaps it's

  232. an emotional weakness

  233. or vulnerability.

  234. Maybe it's something

  235. in your history

  236. or in your family.

  237. Rather than ignoring

  238. or denying

  239. that reality

  240. in your life,

  241. rather than being

  242. constantly afflicted

  243. with the shame

  244. because of it,

  245. Jesus says,

  246. that's where my glory

  247. will shine through.

  248. Right there.

  249. Right where you know,

  250. right in that place

  251. where you admit

  252. that you don't have

  253. it all together,

  254. right there

  255. in your weakness.

  256. That's where my beauty

  257. will shine forth.

  258. But at first,

  259. it gets a little messy,

  260. doesn't it?

  261. Jesus heals this man

  262. in a very curious way.

  263. Now, think about it.

  264. Jesus,

  265. and we've seen this

  266. in the gospel so far,

  267. Jesus could have just

  268. spoken a word

  269. and this man could have seen.

  270. But instead,

  271. what does Jesus do?

  272. He spits on the ground,

  273. he makes some mud,

  274. and then he smears it

  275. in the man's closed eyes.

  276. What is going on here?

  277. Now, some have thought perhaps

  278. that Jesus is intentionally

  279. provoking another Sabbath

  280. controversy with the Pharisees.

  281. As we find out in a few verses,

  282. all of this is happening

  283. on the Sabbath day.

  284. And again,

  285. according to Jewish tradition,

  286. things like kneading

  287. or anointing or healing,

  288. these things,

  289. they weren't allowed

  290. on the Sabbath

  291. according to the passed down

  292. sort of religious traditions.

  293. So perhaps Jesus wants

  294. to force the issue

  295. of his identity

  296. yet again

  297. with the religious authorities

  298. by healing this man

  299. in this sort of strange way.

  300. Or maybe the reason

  301. Jesus heals this way,

  302. some have thought,

  303. is because he's actually

  304. hearkening back

  305. to the Genesis account.

  306. Do you remember?

  307. God created humanity

  308. from what?

  309. From the dust of the ground

  310. in Genesis 2.

  311. So perhaps here,

  312. Jesus is sort of reenacting

  313. this creation story

  314. as if to say

  315. that he is the creator

  316. come to restore

  317. and recreate

  318. his fallen world.

  319. He created humanity

  320. out of the dirt

  321. of the ground

  322. and now he's going

  323. to recreate us

  324. out of the dirt

  325. of the ground.

  326. It's hard to know

  327. exactly what Jesus

  328. had in mind,

  329. but I think two things

  330. here are pretty certain.

  331. What Jesus does here

  332. first is very personal

  333. and it's,

  334. as we said,

  335. a little messy.

  336. in order for Jesus

  337. to bring this man

  338. from blindness to sight,

  339. in order for this man's

  340. place of greatest weakness

  341. to be the place

  342. where God's glory

  343. flood through his life,

  344. the man has to be open

  345. to the uncomfortable touch

  346. of his master's hand.

  347. The man has to be willing

  348. to humble himself.

  349. And what we find

  350. is he is.

  351. Mud in his eyes,

  352. he goes to the pool

  353. and he washes

  354. and he comes back seeing.

  355. And the question put

  356. before us, friends,

  357. is the same thing.

  358. Are we willing

  359. to humble ourselves

  360. before Jesus

  361. even if it means

  362. getting a little messy

  363. in the process?

  364. Even if the way

  365. in which Jesus

  366. wants to do

  367. his unique work

  368. in our life

  369. isn't what we expected

  370. and isn't quite

  371. what we might explain.

  372. Now, as we consider

  373. what that might mean

  374. for us to bring

  375. even our deepest weakness

  376. and vulnerability

  377. to Jesus,

  378. to see that those

  379. are the places

  380. where his glory

  381. might shine

  382. through the brightest,

  383. notice two things

  384. about this passage.

  385. Notice two applications

  386. here, as it were,

  387. of our first big point.

  388. First, notice,

  389. notice the compassionate

  390. urgency of Jesus here.

  391. Look again at verses

  392. four and five.

  393. Jesus says,

  394. we must work

  395. the works of him

  396. who sent me

  397. while it is day.

  398. Night is coming

  399. when no one can work

  400. as long as I am in the,

  401. as long as I am in the world,

  402. in the world,

  403. I am the light of the world.

  404. Now,

  405. I want us to see

  406. the heart

  407. of the Savior

  408. in these words.

  409. He sees us

  410. not just in our

  411. physical blindness,

  412. but in our

  413. spiritual blindness.

  414. He sees us

  415. in our desperate need.

  416. And what does

  417. Jesus do?

  418. Does he hesitate?

  419. Now, think about it.

  420. It would have been

  421. very natural

  422. for Jesus

  423. to hesitate

  424. here in chapter nine.

  425. After all,

  426. it is

  427. Sabbath day.

  428. And in John chapter seven

  429. and eight,

  430. right before this scene,

  431. Jesus has just gone

  432. another ten rounds

  433. with the religious authorities.

  434. And they literally

  435. want to kill him.

  436. And here he is,

  437. still in Jerusalem

  438. after the Feast of Booths,

  439. having just gone

  440. toe-to-toe

  441. with the religious authorities

  442. yet again.

  443. And now,

  444. the disciples,

  445. you can almost feel them

  446. looking at Jesus

  447. and saying,

  448. really, Jesus,

  449. are you going to do this

  450. on the Sabbath again?

  451. Can we just let the dust

  452. settle down a little bit?

  453. Can we let things

  454. cool off?

  455. And come back,

  456. like, tomorrow

  457. and heal this guy?

  458. But no.

  459. Our Savior knows

  460. that his mission

  461. must, he says,

  462. be performed.

  463. His earthly ministry

  464. was just a few

  465. short years.

  466. Soon, Jesus would face

  467. betrayal,

  468. arrest,

  469. and execution.

  470. The night

  471. was coming,

  472. he says.

  473. Now, yes,

  474. after that night

  475. would come the new day

  476. of his resurrection,

  477. his ascension on high,

  478. his outpouring of the Spirit,

  479. yes,

  480. his mission would advance

  481. through the Spirit-filled church,

  482. and we would do

  483. even greater works

  484. than these,

  485. but even so,

  486. we have to keep in mind,

  487. brothers and sisters,

  488. that the night is coming

  489. when no one can work.

  490. This age is not going

  491. to last forever.

  492. God will come

  493. to judge his world

  494. in perfect justice,

  495. and the time for turning

  496. will be no more.

  497. And so,

  498. Jesus,

  499. knowing that the time

  500. is short,

  501. acts with compassionate

  502. urgency.

  503. And consider

  504. what that cost him.

  505. Another miracle of mercy

  506. on the Sabbath day.

  507. Another bold assertion

  508. of his sovereign authority.

  509. Another burst of light

  510. into the darkness

  511. of a world

  512. that does not comprehend it.

  513. Jesus knows

  514. that doing works

  515. like this

  516. will lead him

  517. straight to the cross.

  518. And does he hesitate?

  519. Does he let the dust settle?

  520. No.

  521. He spits in the dust,

  522. picks it up,

  523. and rubs it right

  524. in the guy's eyes.

  525. He opens his eyes

  526. and the blind see.

  527. You see, friends,

  528. what will eventually happen

  529. in the Gospel of John

  530. is that Jesus

  531. will let the darkness

  532. of the world

  533. fall on himself.

  534. The darkness

  535. of human hatred

  536. and evil,

  537. the darkness even

  538. of divine wrath

  539. for our sin.

  540. He will let the darkness

  541. fall on himself

  542. so that we can step

  543. into the light.

  544. So that we,

  545. the blind from birth,

  546. can at last see.

  547. Do you see now

  548. that you can trust

  549. this Savior?

  550. trust him,

  551. trust him even

  552. with your weakness,

  553. even with your vulnerability.

  554. Do you see

  555. that you can humble

  556. yourself before him

  557. and find yourself

  558. humbled before

  559. a loving,

  560. strong,

  561. and gentle Savior?

  562. you can admit your need

  563. and you can admit

  564. your blindness

  565. and you can let him

  566. spread some proverbial mud

  567. on your eyes

  568. and you can hear him say,

  569. wash,

  570. and then you can come back

  571. seeing.

  572. Friends,

  573. this is Jesus,

  574. full of compassion,

  575. full of urgency

  576. to save the lost,

  577. to save us,

  578. to save you.

  579. But notice second here,

  580. as Jesus opens

  581. the eyes of the blind,

  582. notice,

  583. notice the wonderful

  584. boldness

  585. of this man

  586. who is so humble.

  587. In verses 8 through 33,

  588. the sort of long

  589. middle section

  590. of chapter 9,

  591. notice all that

  592. this healed man

  593. has to face

  594. from those around him.

  595. Notice first,

  596. notice first his boldness

  597. or his assurance

  598. through it all.

  599. First,

  600. as he faces

  601. the confusion

  602. of his neighbors.

  603. Wait,

  604. they say,

  605. you can't really

  606. be the same person.

  607. Now,

  608. you know,

  609. people might say

  610. the same of you

  611. after you become

  612. a Christian

  613. or after the Lord

  614. does a deep,

  615. humbling,

  616. healing,

  617. changing work

  618. in your life.

  619. People will expect you

  620. to be the same old person

  621. you always were

  622. with the same old habits

  623. and the same old tendencies.

  624. But the reality is,

  625. is humbling yourself

  626. before Jesus

  627. means that you will change

  628. and that will cause

  629. confusion

  630. to the people around you.

  631. And yet,

  632. notice how the man responds.

  633. He says,

  634. no,

  635. it's really me.

  636. Jesus did this.

  637. Second,

  638. the man overcomes

  639. not just the confusion

  640. of the neighbors

  641. but the suspicion

  642. of the religious authorities.

  643. Now,

  644. quite naturally,

  645. the neighbors

  646. take the healed man

  647. to the local synagogue leaders.

  648. That was a pretty common thing to do.

  649. This seems like a big deal,

  650. they think.

  651. This guy just got healed.

  652. Let's take him

  653. to the people we trust

  654. and know

  655. and let's let them

  656. sort this out.

  657. This is kind of a big deal.

  658. Let's go.

  659. But,

  660. all that many of them

  661. are concerned about

  662. is whether or not

  663. the traditions

  664. have been kept.

  665. And in keeping

  666. the traditions,

  667. they're worried about

  668. keeping their own power

  669. in place.

  670. But again,

  671. the healed man

  672. has this deep assurance

  673. and deep boldness

  674. that their suspicions

  675. of him and of Jesus

  676. can't shake.

  677. He says,

  678. Jesus must be a prophet.

  679. He must be someone

  680. sent from God.

  681. And you can see

  682. as this passage

  683. is unfolding

  684. that the healed man's

  685. faith is deepening

  686. as he undergoes testing.

  687. It was Jesus,

  688. he says.

  689. Who is Jesus?

  690. He must be a prophet.

  691. He must be someone

  692. sent from God.

  693. Third,

  694. the man overcomes

  695. not just the confusion

  696. of his neighbors,

  697. not just the suspicion

  698. of the authorities

  699. in his life,

  700. but he overcomes

  701. even the fear

  702. of his parents.

  703. That is,

  704. this man doesn't succumb

  705. to the same fear

  706. as his parents do.

  707. And what is that fear?

  708. It's a fear

  709. of being cast out

  710. or being excluded

  711. or being excommunicated

  712. from the synagogue.

  713. The synagogue

  714. was sort of the local place

  715. of worship for Jews

  716. in the town.

  717. And why

  718. were they afraid

  719. of being excluded

  720. or cast out

  721. or excommunicated

  722. from the synagogue?

  723. Well, because

  724. some synagogues

  725. had already started

  726. casting people out

  727. if they confessed

  728. that Jesus

  729. is the Messiah.

  730. Now, we know

  731. that this wasn't

  732. a widespread policy

  733. during Jesus' lifetime.

  734. It wasn't the fact

  735. that every synagogue

  736. had sort of instituted

  737. this rule,

  738. but it does seem like

  739. some local congregations

  740. in Jesus' day

  741. had started

  742. to take a definitive stand

  743. on this man

  744. from Nazareth.

  745. Rumors were spreading

  746. about him.

  747. People were getting

  748. enthusiastic.

  749. Some local synagogues

  750. had to draw a line

  751. and they declared

  752. that he is not

  753. from God

  754. and anyone

  755. who thought otherwise

  756. would be cast out,

  757. excommunicated

  758. from fellowship

  759. in the synagogue.

  760. Now,

  761. that's no small thing.

  762. Imagine being

  763. cut off

  764. from the sort of

  765. locus of your community,

  766. your family,

  767. and your sense

  768. of belonging

  769. to God

  770. and God's people.

  771. Not being allowed

  772. to come and participate

  773. in the teaching

  774. and the rituals

  775. and the practices

  776. and the songs

  777. that really make you

  778. who you are

  779. as a Jewish person

  780. in the first century.

  781. It's hard for us

  782. to find a good analogy

  783. for that today,

  784. you know.

  785. If you can't come

  786. to church on Sunday,

  787. your whole world

  788. doesn't fall apart,

  789. right?

  790. I think it would be

  791. sort of like losing

  792. our job today

  793. as I thought about it.

  794. Just think of how much

  795. identity and belonging,

  796. not to mention

  797. financial provision,

  798. we get from our jobs.

  799. Now, if confessing

  800. Jesus as the Messiah

  801. meant an immediate

  802. loss of your job,

  803. you'd be afraid, right?

  804. Well, if you can feel

  805. a little bit of that fear,

  806. then you can sympathize

  807. a little with this guy's parents.

  808. They're faced

  809. with a really hard decision.

  810. And so what do they do?

  811. In fear,

  812. they dodge the question.

  813. Ask him.

  814. He's of age.

  815. We don't know

  816. what happened.

  817. And so they bring

  818. the healed man back in.

  819. And does he cave

  820. to the fear?

  821. No.

  822. Something so profound

  823. has happened

  824. to this man

  825. that even the fear

  826. of being thrown out

  827. of the synagogue

  828. doesn't shake him.

  829. You have to love

  830. the moment when they

  831. start interrogating him again.

  832. And he says in verse 27,

  833. I've told you already

  834. how he healed me

  835. and he would not listen.

  836. Why do you want

  837. to hear it again?

  838. Do you want to become

  839. his disciples?

  840. I think that's the definition

  841. of pluck, right?

  842. Like having that kind

  843. of audacity

  844. and boldness

  845. in the face

  846. of what really is

  847. a sort of devolving situation.

  848. What would give this guy

  849. such courage?

  850. What would give him

  851. such assurance?

  852. Well, it was his life-changing

  853. encounter with Jesus.

  854. Verse 25,

  855. One thing I do know,

  856. that though I was blind,

  857. now I see.

  858. All the confusion,

  859. all the suspicion,

  860. all the fear

  861. can't shake that one thing.

  862. Though I was blind,

  863. now I see.

  864. J.C. Ryle,

  865. an old pastor

  866. from the 19th century,

  867. writes this

  868. in his reflection

  869. on this passage.

  870. He says,

  871. There's no kind of evidence

  872. so satisfactory as this

  873. to the heart

  874. of a real Christian.

  875. His knowledge

  876. may be small,

  877. his faith

  878. may be feeble,

  879. his doctrinal views

  880. may be confused

  881. and indistinct

  882. at present,

  883. but Christ

  884. has really

  885. wrought

  886. a work

  887. of grace

  888. in his heart

  889. by the Spirit.

  890. He feels

  891. within him

  892. something

  893. that you cannot

  894. overthrow.

  895. I was dark

  896. and now I have light.

  897. I was afraid

  898. of God

  899. and now I love him.

  900. I was fond of sin

  901. and now I hate it.

  902. I was blind

  903. and now I see.

  904. And then Ryle

  905. goes on and he says,

  906. Let us

  907. never rest

  908. till we know

  909. and feel

  910. within us

  911. some real work

  912. of the Holy Spirit.

  913. Let us

  914. not be content

  915. with just the name

  916. and the form

  917. of Christianity.

  918. Let us desire

  919. to have true

  920. experiential

  921. acquaintance

  922. with it.

  923. Feelings

  924. are no doubt

  925. deceitful

  926. and they're not

  927. everything in religion,

  928. but if we have

  929. no inward feelings

  930. about spiritual matters,

  931. Ryle says,

  932. it's a very bad sign.

  933. The hungry man

  934. eats

  935. and feels strengthened.

  936. The thirsty man

  937. drinks

  938. and feels refreshed.

  939. Surely the man

  940. who has within him

  941. the grace of God

  942. ought to be able

  943. to say,

  944. I feel its power.

  945. And friends,

  946. to the extent

  947. that you humble yourself

  948. before Jesus,

  949. the light of the world,

  950. bringing to him

  951. not just your strengths,

  952. but also your profound weakness,

  953. admitting to him

  954. and to others

  955. not just your abilities,

  956. but also your profound inability,

  957. to that extent,

  958. you will feel

  959. his power

  960. as you worship him,

  961. as you pray to him,

  962. as you walk with him

  963. through your life

  964. through trial and suffering.

  965. And after the trial,

  966. do you notice what happens

  967. in verse 35?

  968. After this guy

  969. just gets put through

  970. the wringer of confusion

  971. and suspicion

  972. and fear

  973. and accusation

  974. and cast out

  975. of the synagogue himself,

  976. what happens?

  977. Jesus comes and finds him

  978. and meets him again.

  979. Jesus seeks him out,

  980. has fellowship with him,

  981. brings him into a fuller

  982. and more robust faith.

  983. brothers and sisters,

  984. do not fear

  985. adding your voice

  986. to the voices of those

  987. who are giving testimony

  988. to the power

  989. and the goodness of Jesus.

  990. Like this man,

  991. you don't need

  992. all the right answers.

  993. You don't need

  994. years of training.

  995. You simply need

  996. to be able to give

  997. joyful witness

  998. to the work of grace

  999. in your own life.

  1000. And the promise is

  1001. that through that trial,

  1002. Jesus himself

  1003. will meet you.

1004. So this is the first

1005. big idea of John 9.

  1006. The blind are made

  1007. to see.

  1008. If we admit

  1009. that we're in darkness,

  1010. Jesus will bring us

  1011. into the light.

  1012. But the second point

1013. we see here in John 9

  1014. is this,

  1015. that those who think

  1016. they see

  1017. are blinded.

  1018. Friends,

  1019. spiritual pride

  1020. is a dangerous thing.

  1021. And we can actually

  1022. see it growing

  1023. throughout this passage

  1024. in the character

  1025. of the Pharisees.

  1026. First,

  1027. they sort of dispute

  1028. the healed man.

  1029. And perhaps

  1030. there's some openness.

  1031. You know,

  1032. we see that there's

  1033. some division

  1034. in their ranks.

  1035. And yet,

  1036. they refuse

  1037. to open their minds

  1038. and admit

  1039. that perhaps

  1040. they don't have

  1041. it all figured out.

  1042. Perhaps their traditions

  1043. aren't the last word.

  1044. Perhaps what God

  1045. desires

  1046. isn't a show

  1047. of great power

  1048. and skill

  1049. and learning.

  1050. Perhaps what God

  1051. desires most,

  1052. as the prophets

  1053. will say again

  1054. and again

  1055. and again,

  1056. is a humble

  1057. and contrite heart.

  1058. A humble admission

  1059. of weakness

  1060. and need

  1061. coming before

  1062. the God

  1063. of the universe.

  1064. Notice how

  1065. the interrogation

  1066. with this healed man

  1067. ends.

  1068. They say,

  1069. they answered him,

  1070. and they say,

  1071. you were born

  1072. in utter sin,

  1073. and would you

  1074. teach us?

  1075. You can just feel

  1076. the vitriol

  1077. coming out.

  1078. Would you teach us,

  1079. they say.

  1080. In other words,

  1081. they refuse

  1082. to be teachable.

  1083. What could

  1084. this uneducated,

  1085. until recently

  1086. disabled beggar

  1087. possibly teach us,

  1088. they think?

  1089. Friends,

  1090. beware

  1091. spiritual

  1092. pride.

  1093. Jesus said,

  1094. for judgment

1095. I came into this world,

  1096. that those

  1097. who do not see

  1098. may see,

  1099. and those who see

  1100. may become blind.

  1101. Some of the Pharisees

  1102. near him

  1103. heard these things

  1104. and said to him,

  1105. are we also blind?

  1106. And Jesus said,

  1107. if you were blind,

  1108. you'd have no guilt.

  1109. In other words,

  1110. if you admitted

  1111. your blindness,

  1112. you'd be free.

1113. But now that you say,

  1114. we see,

  1115. your guilt remains.

  1116. And that's where

  1117. the passage ends.

  1118. And that's where

  1119. we end.

  1120. At least our sermon.

1121. With the coming of Jesus,

  1122. the curtains

  1123. have been flooding open.

  1124. The curtains

  1125. are being ripped open,

1126. the light is pouring in,

  1127. and as the church

  1128. continues to proclaim

  1129. the message of Jesus,

  1130. the Spirit continues

  1131. to shine his light

  1132. into our darkness.

  1133. And the reality is,

  1134. is that we'll never

  1135. really see

  1136. until we admit

  1137. that we're blind,

  1138. until we become

  1139. humble

  1140. and teachable.

  1141. You know,

  1142. there's nothing wrong

  1143. with good education.

  1144. There's nothing wrong

  1145. with learning

  1146. and pursuing

  1147. religious knowledge

  1148. and pursuing

  1149. these types of things.

  1150. There's nothing wrong

  1151. with that.

  1152. In fact,

  1153. there's a lot of good

  1154. that comes of that.

  1155. And yet,

  1156. if that's the thing

  1157. that we're leaning on,

  1158. beware, friends,

  1159. that we don't become

  1160. just like the Pharisees,

  1161. unteachable,

  1162. hardened,

  1163. unable to admit

  1164. our vulnerability

  1165. and our weakness,

  1166. unable to confess

  1167. that we're not righteous,

  1168. but we're sinners.

  1169. You see, friends,

  1170. the cross of Jesus

  1171. levels us all,

  1172. does it not?

  1173. Before the cross,

1174. we see that we are

  1175. all sinners.

  1176. That we are all

  1177. woefully short

1178. of the glory of God.

1179. Each and every one of us.

  1180. And yet,

  1181. what does the cross

  1182. also tell us?

  1183. That God loves

1184. each and every one of us.

  1185. That we are all,

  1186. in His eyes,

  1187. precious,

  1188. valued,

  1189. loved.

  1190. And it's right there

  1191. in humility

  1192. before Jesus,

  1193. before the cross

  1194. and the resurrection.

  1195. It's right there

  1196. when we really

  1197. begin to see.

  1198. When we take hold

  1199. of Christ crucified

  1200. and risen,

  1201. that's when our weakness

  1202. becomes our strength.

  1203. Even if God

  1204. doesn't choose

  1205. to heal us.

  1206. That's when our foolishness

  1207. of worshiping

  1208. a crucified Savior

  1209. becomes real wisdom.

  1210. That's when our blindness

  1211. becomes sight.

  1212. when we take hold

  1213. of Him,

1214. the light of the world.

  1215. Let's pray together.

1216. O light of the world,

  1217. undimming

  1218. and unsetting,

  1219. O shine

  1220. each mist

  1221. away.

  1222. Banish the fear,

  1223. the falsehood,

  1224. and the fretting.

  1225. Be our

  1226. unchanging

  1227. day.

  1228. Spirit,

  1229. only you

  1230. can bring

  1231. true humility

  1232. to our hearts,

  1233. so we humbly ask

  1234. that you would do

  1235. that work this morning.

  1236. We are so proud.

  1237. We are so afraid

  1238. of admitting

  1239. weakness and need.

  1240. Please soften

  1241. our hearts.

  1242. Help us to see

  1243. our desperate

  1244. need of grace

  1245. and show us Christ.

  1246. Spirit,

  1247. let us see Him

  1248. standing even now

  1249. before our Father's throne,

  1250. looking upon us

  1251. in love,

  1252. ready to receive us,

  1253. bearing the wounds

1254. of the cross for us,

  1255. casting out all fear.

  1256. Turn our hearts

  1257. to you, Lord,

  1258. this day,

  1259. this week,

  1260. and may we walk

  1261. in the boldness

  1262. that only humility

  1263. before you can give.

  1264. Amen.
