  1. Well, good morning, those of you who are here in person and those who are online.

  2. We're glad you have joined us.

  3. Peter, thank you for those words.

  4. I feel like we should just stop and meditate on those.

  5. I don't need to preach.

  6. I will anyway, but thank you for those.

  7. I really appreciate them.

  8. As we go to God's Word this morning, will you join me in prayer?

  9. Lord, we thank you that as we gather this morning, Lord, we gather to know you more.

  10. And we gather because you have been at work, Lord, being the loving Savior that we have just sung about.

  11. Lord, we pray now that by your Spirit you would open our hearts and our minds to receive your Word.

  12. Lord, I pray for your enabling power so that I might speak clearly.

  13. And Lord, that you might use this time, Lord, to draw us closer to you.

  14. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  15. Amen.

  16. So as Pastor Nick mentioned, it's Palm Sunday.

  17. And on that day many, many years ago, the crowds gathered and lined the streets of Jerusalem

  18. and laid down palm fronds and coats in honor of Jesus who rode in on a donkey.

  19. The expectations were high.

  20. People were looking for a king.

  21. A king who would come and rescue them from Roman oppression.

  22. A king who would come and free the nation of Israel to have independence again.

  23. A king who would come like the king of old.

  24. King David, the great shepherd king.

  25. The one of whom it said in 2 Samuel 5,

  26. It was you who led out and brought in Israel.

  27. And the Lord said to you,

  28. You shall be a shepherd of my people Israel.

  29. And you shall be prince over Israel.

  30. These people longed for someone who would come and lead them out and lead them in in victory.

  31. One who would come to deliver them.

  32. One that they could follow with confidence,

  33. knowing that he would lead them to life and security.

  34. I wonder if your heart resonates with that longing this morning.

  35. Do you long for someone to come and to take you by the hand?

  36. To raise you up?

  37. To lead you out of darkness and into life and into light?

  38. It's worth recognizing how easily our hearts look for this.

  39. And how we latch on to things.

  40. Sometimes we latch on to a religious leader.

  41. Or a political head of state.

  42. Sometimes we just latch on to the social leader of our high school group.

  43. Or a mom's group.

  44. We latch on to others to follow.

  45. Because we know we need it.

  46. Or maybe in this 21st century, we don't.

  47. Because we are desperate to be the captains of our own ship.

  48. And we latch on to ourselves to lead us into life.

  49. And we deny our need for anyone else.

  50. And yet, as this pandemic has so painfully shown many of us,

  51. we end up suffering alone.

  52. We don't choose well, often, when we look for leaders.

  53. When we look for someone to follow.

  54. When we look for someone to latch on to.

  55. We don't know.

  56. We don't know.

  57. But we do need it.

  58. And God has spoken into this human longing.

  59. He has spoken by sending His Son, Jesus.

  60. Which leads us to our text this morning.

  61. We are in John.

  62. The Gospel of John.

    John 10 chapter mention

  63. Chapter 10.

  64. We are continuing in our series in the first 11 chapters of John.

  65. Remember, last week, Pastor Nick preached on Jesus coming to the blind man and healing him.

  66. Bringing sight to someone who had been blind from birth.

  67. But then also, how that provoked controversy with the religious leaders.

  68. Because Jesus did not fit into their paradigms.

  69. Of how God would bring this life and light to the world.

  70. In our passage this morning, in John 10, we see that Jesus alone is the good shepherd we need to lead us into life.

  71. We'll look at this in two sections.

  72. Verses 1 through 21.

  73. Jesus being the good shepherd.

  74. And verses 22 through 42.

  75. How Jesus alone can be that for us.

  76. So, let's look at these sections in sequence.

  77. If you have your Bibles at home, or if you want to read along on the screen, we're going to read verses 1 through 21 first.

  78. And reflect on that for a few minutes.

  79. So, read along with me.

  80. John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  81. I'm sorry.

  82. Chapter 10, verse 1.

  83. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.

  84. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  85. To him the gatekeeper opens.

  86. The sheep hear his voice.

  87. And he calls his own sheep out by name and leads them out.

  88. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them.

  89. And the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

  90. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of the strangers.

  91. This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  92. So, Jesus said, again said to them, truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

  93. All who come before me are thieves and robbers.

  94. But the sheep did not listen to them.

  95. I am the door.

  96. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

  97. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  98. I come that they might have life.

  99. I have it abundantly.

  100. I am the good shepherd.

  101. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  102. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees.

  103. And the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

  104. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

  105. I am the good shepherd.

  106. I know my own and my own know me.

  107. Just as a father knows me and I know the father and I lay down my life for the sheep.

  108. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold.

  109. I must bring them also and they will listen to my voice.

  110. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

  111. For this reason, the father loves me because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

  112. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.

  113. I have authority to lay it down and I have authority to take it up again.

  114. This charge I have received from my father.

  115. And there was again a division among the Jews because of these words.

  116. Many of them said, he has a demon and is insane.

  117. Why listen to him?

  118. And others said, these are not the words of a demon.

  119. These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon.

  120. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?

  121. As we've seen in John, Jesus is using rich metaphors to try to help us understand who he is.

  122. And he comes to us in this passage and he says, I am the good shepherd who leads us to life.

  123. And we're going to walk through the passage and make some observations about what Jesus says.

  124. Verses 1 through 5, Jesus simply paints a picture of what a sheepfold in the first century would look like.

  125. It was often a pen or an enclosure.

  126. Sometimes it would be a natural thing like a cave.

  127. It might be put up against a house on the backside or on the side of a house with usually a single entrance.

  128. And it might hold multiple flocks from multiple shepherds.

  129. He describes how the sheep know their shepherd.

  130. So that when a shepherd comes and he calls them out, they have a relationship and they know.

  131. And the shepherd knows the sheep and the sheep know the shepherd.

  132. And so the shepherd would come and give his whistle or his signal.

  133. And his sheep would come out and the rest would stay.

  134. And he says, and this is the relationship between healthy sheep and shepherds.

  135. When people try to come in by another way.

  136. Or people try to come and take other sheep that are not their own.

  137. They're thieves and robbers.

  138. And so helpfully, John in verse 6 points out, he used this as a figure of speech.

  139. So we know this is a metaphor.

  140. This is helpful.

  141. John hasn't always told us that.

  142. But here, it's very clear.

  143. He uses the finger of speech to help us understand what a lot of Old Testament Jews would have already understood some of.

  144. Because this image of shepherd and sheep is a very well established one in the Old Testament.

  145. I want to spend a few minutes just laying out a few of the scriptures, not even exhaustively, that point to or use this imagery.

  146. So back in Numbers 27.

  147. So we're at the people of Israel have been wandering in the wilderness.

  148. They've come to the edge of the promised land.

  149. And God tells Moses, because of his disobedience and faithlessness, he is not going to enter into the promised land.

  150. And Moses says this to God,

  151. Let the Lord appoint a man over the congregation, who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be as a sheep that have no shepherd.

  152. Psalm 23 is a well-known psalm that many, many of us have heard.

  153. The Lord is my shepherd.

  154. I shall not want.

  155. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

  156. He leads me beside still waters.

  157. He restores my soul.

  158. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

  159. In the prophets in Isaiah chapter 40, as Isaiah is beginning to look ahead to the renewing and what it will take for God to renew his people.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  160. He says,

  161. Say to the cities of Judah,

  162. Behold your God.

  163. He will tend his flock like a shepherd.

  164. He will gather the lambs in his arms.

  165. He will carry them in his bosom and gently lead those that are with young.

  166. And as Andrew read earlier in Ezekiel 34,

  167. this is in the context of judgment of the exile when God had come and removed Israel from the promised land because of their faithlessness and disobedience.

  168. And yet he said,

  169. and he specifically in that chapter is condemning the leaders of Israel because they had not led the people to worship God,

  170. but it led them astray to worship other gods.

  171. And he says,

  172. Those shepherds have been faithless,

  173. but I,

  174. your God,

  175. will be your faithful shepherd.

  176. But then he says later in that chapter,

  177. in verse 23 of Exodus 34,

  178. And I will set up over them.

  179. This is a prediction coming in the future.

  180. I will set up over them one shepherd,

  181. my servant David,

  182. and he shall feed them,

  183. and he shall feed them,

  184. and be their shepherd.

  185. And I,

  186. the Lord,

  187. will be their God,

  188. and my servant David shall be prince among them.

  189. I am the Lord.

  190. I have spoken.

  191. Now friends,

  192. this was written long after David was dead and in his grave.

  193. He was not talking about the resurrection of David.

  194. He was talking about one in the line of David who would come and fulfill this.

  195. So Jesus steps into this long history and says,

  196. I am the good shepherd who has come to lead you to life.

  197. And he says four things about him,

  198. and I want to move quickly through these because there's a lot to go here.

  199. First, he says,

  200. I am the way to life.

  201. I am the door.

  202. In verses 7 through 10,

  203. he says,

  204. if anyone enters by me,

  205. he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

  206. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  207. But I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  208. Jesus has come to lead his sheep to life.

  209. When he leads them out to eat the grass,

  210. that is their life.

  211. If they don't eat,

  212. they die.

  213. Think about what Jesus has done to the people that he's encountered.

  214. In chapter 9,

  215. the blind man.

  216. In chapter 5,

  217. the cripple at the pool of Bethesda.

  218. The crowds in chapter 6,

  219. who he fed food,

  220. bread from heaven,

  221. manna,

  222. and then reminded them of a greater food.

  223. The Samaritan woman who comes out for water in the heat of the day.

  224. Jesus offers a greater water.

  225. When Jesus comes,

  226. he brings life to his sheep.

  227. He is reversing the curse of death.

  228. He is fixing the fallenness of the world.

  229. And he says,

  230. following me will lead you to life.

  231. In contrast to the leaders of the day,

  232. in contrast to the Pharisees who are contending with him in chapter 9,

  233. he says,

  234. follow me and I will lead you to life.

  235. That's the first thing he says.

  236. The second thing he says is in verse 14.

  237. I am the good shepherd.

  238. I know my own and my own.

  239. Know me just as the Father knows me and I know the Father.

  240. Jesus says,

  241. I am the good shepherd who knows who are mine.

  242. And again,

  243. in this context,

  244. the Old Testament people of Israel,

  245. the greatest privilege was to be God's people,

  246. to be God's flock.

  247. And Jesus says,

  248. I know my flock

  249. because I know the Father.

  250. And he's being provocative when he says this.

  251. He says,

  252. if you don't know me,

  253. you don't know my Father.

  254. And these Jews were claiming to know him

  255. and yet reject Jesus.

  256. Claiming to know God

  257. and yet rejecting Jesus.

  258. So Jesus comes with this image to say,

  259. I know them.

  260. I know my own.

  261. And if you're rejecting me,

  262. don't fool yourself that you are my own.

  263. But he says,

  264. but to all who do listen,

  265. to those who follow me,

  266. they are my own.

  267. And verse 3 reminds us,

  268. I know them by name.

  269. Friends,

  270. do you know what it's like?

  271. Do you remember what it's like

  272. to walk into a room

  273. and have someone know you by name?

  274. To walk into school the first day

  275. after a long summer

  276. and for your friend to say,

  277. hey, Matt,

  278. it's great to see you.

  279. To walk into a family reunion,

  280. your in-laws family reunion

  281. where you've never been before

  282. and have the host come up and say,

  283. wow, Matt,

  284. it's great to have you here.

  285. We're so glad you're a part of this family.

  286. When you are welcomed

  287. is one who is known.

  288. There's a sense of belonging,

  289. a sense of identity,

  290. a sense of welcoming,

  291. a sense of safety and of comfort.

  292. Jesus says,

  293. I am the good shepherd

  294. and I know my own.

  295. The third thing that he says

  296. in verse 16

  297. is that he will gather

  298. all of his own to himself.

  299. And I have other sheep

  300. that are not of this fold.

  301. I must bring them in also

  302. so that they will listen to my voice

  303. so there will be one flock

  304. and one shepherd.

  305. And again,

  306. the Jewish people thought

  307. that they were,

  308. because they were physically

  309. the descendants of Abraham,

  310. the special people.

  311. And Jesus is reminding them

  312. as he has in multiple other ways.

  313. No,

  314. the people of God

  315. are going to come from

  316. every tribe and tongue and nation.

  317. It's not just going to come

  318. from the people of Israel.

  319. It's going to come from

  320. everyone,

  321. everywhere.

  322. And they're not going to have

  323. to come and find me

  324. because I'm going to take

  325. the initiative to go

  326. and find them

  327. and bring them in.

  328. I'm going to find

  329. the scattered people

  330. throughout the world

  331. and I'm going to call them in

  332. to the people of God,

  333. which will ultimately

  334. be the church.

  335. Friends,

  336. wandering sheep

  337. don't find their ways home.

  338. Shepherds have to go

  339. and find them

  340. and bring them back.

  341. And Jesus says,

  342. I'm going to go

  343. and find those of you

  344. who are looking for me

  345. and I'm going to draw you in

  346. and I'm going to bring you back

  347. with love and devotion

  348. and sacrifice.

  349. And my people will be one flock

  350. and they will be led

  351. by one shepherd.

  352. Friends,

  353. in the kingdom of God,

  354. in Jesus,

  355. under Jesus shepherding,

  356. there is no insider,

  357. no outsider.

  358. There is no ethnic policy.

  359. There is no income restriction.

  360. There is no educational barriers.

  361. All are welcome.

  362. Finally,

  363. the fourth thing

  364. and the most important thing

  365. that Jesus says

  366. about his shepherding

  367. is that he says

  368. repeatedly throughout this

  369. that he is a good shepherd

  370. because he will lay down

  371. his life for his sheep

  372. so that they might live.

  373. This is the extended contrast

  374. in verses 11 through 18.

  375. I will lay down my sheep.

  376. He repeats it four times

  377. in those verses.

  378. And he contrasts it.

  379. He contrasts it with hired hands.

  380. A hired hand is someone

  381. who is brought in

  382. but doesn't know his sheep.

  383. And he does not care for them.

  384. And when they're out in the fields

  385. and danger comes

  386. and the wolves come

  387. to attack the sheep,

  388. the hired hand says,

  389. well, this is too much.

  390. I don't really care enough

  391. about this sheep to die.

  392. And the hired hand runs away

  393. and the sheep are ravaged

  394. by the wolves.

  395. Jesus is not a hired hand.

  396. Jesus comes

  397. and with great love

  398. he says,

  399. I am willing to lay down

  400. my life for the sheep.

  401. I will trade my life

  402. for yours.

  403. This is a rebuke

  404. of the leaders

  405. who sought to consolidate

  406. their own power

  407. rather than receiving Jesus

  408. who had come from God.

  409. Jesus comes

  410. and he says

  411. to these people

  412. on this day

  413. and to us today,

  414. I have come

  415. to lay down my life

  416. for you.

  417. To rescue you

  418. from the wolves.

  419. To rescue you

  420. from the false leaders

  421. that will lead you astray

  422. into paths

  423. that are not life.

  424. And even more so

  425. to lead you

  426. out of the darkness

  427. of sin

  428. and out of the slavery

  429. to fear of death.

  430. Your greatest enemies,

  431. the wolves that most have

  432. the ability

  433. to destroy your soul.

  434. I will come

  435. and I will lay down

  436. my life.

  437. In the book of John

  438. we are close

  439. to the end.

  440. The turning point.

  441. If you've ever thought

  442. through the map

  443. of the book of John

  444. the first 11 chapters

  445. all happen

  446. within like 3 years.

  447. The last 11 chapters

  448. have it in 7 days.

  449. And it's all heading

  450. towards the cross.

  451. And Jesus knows that

  452. and he's saying

  453. I am coming

  454. to lay down my life

  455. at the cross for you.

  456. I will die in your place.

  457. I will die for your sin.

  458. And I will rise again

  459. to be eternally

  460. your good shepherd

  461. who can lead you to life.

  462. Jesus declares

  463. that he is

  464. the good shepherd.

  465. And he offers

  466. an invitation.

  467. Will you hear his voice?

  468. Will you respond?

  469. Will you come to him

  470. and follow him?

  471. And we see in verses

  472. 19 through 21

  473. that the people

  474. are divided.

  475. Some people look at him

  476. and say

  477. you're crazy.

  478. You are a possessed man.

  479. Whatever you are thinking

  480. that's ridiculous.

  481. I'm not listening to you.

  482. But others look

  483. at his works

  484. and say

  485. could someone

  486. who had healed

  487. a blind man

  488. be powered

  489. by the devil?

  490. That's not one

  491. who brings

  492. death

  493. but life.

  494. So Jesus

  495. says

  496. I am the good shepherd.

  497. But he goes on

  498. in this conversation

  499. with the people

  500. in verses 22

  501. through 41

  502. Jesus explains more

  503. of the basis

  504. on how he can be

  505. the good shepherd.

  506. Why he alone

  507. is the good shepherd.

  508. And it's linked

  509. specifically

  510. to his relationship

  511. with God the Father.

  512. So let's read

  513. verses 22

  514. through 41

  515. together.

  516. It will be

  517. on the screen here

  518. you can read it

  519. along at home.

  520. Chapter 10

  521. verse 22.

  522. At that time

  523. the feast of dedication

  524. took place in Jerusalem.

  525. it was winter

  526. and Jesus

  527. was walking

  528. in the temple

  529. in the colonnade

  530. of Solomon.

  531. So the Jews

  532. gathered around him

  533. and said to him

  534. how long

  535. will you keep us

  536. in suspense?

  537. If you are the Christ

  538. tell us plainly.

  539. And Jesus

  540. answered them

  541. I told you

  542. and you did not believe.

  543. The works

  544. that I do

  545. in my Father's name

  546. bear witness

  547. about me.

  548. But you do not believe

  549. because you are not

  550. part of my flock.

  551. My sheep

  552. hear my voice

  553. and I know them

  554. and they follow me.

  555. I give them

  556. eternal life

  557. and they will

  558. never perish

  559. and no one

  560. will snatch them

  561. out of my hand.

  562. My Father

  563. who has given

  564. them to me

  565. is greater

  566. than all

  567. and no one

  568. is able to

  569. snatch them

  570. out of the

  571. Father's hand.

  572. I and the

  573. Father are one.

  574. The Jews

  575. picked up stones

  576. again to stone

  577. him.

  578. Jesus answered

  579. them

  580. I have shown

  581. you many good

  582. works from the

  583. Father.

  584. For which of

  585. these are you

  586. going to stone

  587. me?

  588. And Jesus

  589. answered them

  590. it is not

  591. for a good

  592. work that we

  593. are going to

  594. stone you

  595. but for

  596. blasphemy

  597. because you

  598. being a man

  599. make yourself

  600. God.

  601. Jesus answered

  602. them

  603. is it not

  604. written in

  605. your law

  606. I said

  607. you are

  608. gods

  609. if he

  610. called them

  611. gods

  612. to whom

  613. the word

  614. of God

  615. came

  616. and the

  617. scripture

  618. cannot be

  619. broken

  620. do you

  621. say of

  622. him

  623. who

  624. father

  625. consecrated

  626. and sent

  627. into the

  628. world

  629. you are

  630. blaspheming

  631. because I

  632. said I

  633. am the

  634. son of

  635. God

  636. if I

  637. am not

  638. doing the

  639. works of

  640. my father

  641. then do

  642. not believe

  643. me

  644. but if I

  645. do them

  646. even though

  647. you do

  648. not believe

  649. me

  650. believe the

  651. works

  652. that you

  653. may know

  654. and understand

  655. that the

  656. father is

  657. in me

  658. and I

  659. am in

  660. the father

  661. again they

  662. sought to

  663. arrest him

  664. but he

  665. escaped from

  666. their hands

  667. he went

  668. away across

  669. the Jordan

  670. to the place

  671. where John

  672. had been

  673. baptizing at

  674. first

  675. and there

  676. he remained

  677. and many

  678. came to

  679. him

  680. and they

  681. said

  682. John

  683. did no

  684. sign

  685. but everything

  686. that John

  687. said about

  688. this man

  689. was true

  690. and many

  691. believed

  692. in him

  693. there

  694. in this

  695. in this

  696. interaction

  697. with the

  698. leaders

  699. Jesus is

  700. explaining

  701. how he

  702. can be

  703. and must

  704. be the

  705. only

  706. good

  707. shepherd

  708. for us

  709. the timing

  710. is a feast

  711. of dedication

  712. which is not

  713. a feast

  714. you will find

  715. in the

  716. Old Testament

  717. law

  718. but it

  719. comes from

  720. the history

  721. of the

  722. Jewish

  723. people

  724. when in

  725. 173

  726. BC

  727. the Roman

  728. emperor

  729. Antiochus

  730. Epiphanes

  731. IV

  732. invaded

  733. Rome

  734. desecrated

  735. the temple

  736. sacrificed

  737. a pig

  738. on the

  739. altar

  740. and did

  741. great

  742. damage

  743. a few

  744. years later

  745. there was

  746. a rebellion

  747. the Maccabees

  748. rose up

  749. against Roman

  750. rule

  751. and pushed

  752. out the

  753. Romans

  754. and they

  755. rededicated

  756. the temple

  757. and when

  758. they

  759. rededicated

  760. the temple

  761. that's what

  762. he's talking

  763. about here

  764. it's the

  765. feast of

  766. dedications

  767. also called

  768. the festival

  769. of lights

  770. which is also

  771. called

  772. Hanukkah

  773. which is

  774. probably

  775. what many

  776. of you

  777. know it

  778. as

  779. so this

  780. is where

  781. we're at

  782. in the

  783. in the

  784. Jewish

  785. calendar

  786. in the

  787. year

  788. and the

  789. people

  790. come

  791. with a

  792. question

  793. are you

  794. the

  795. deliverer

  796. just as

  797. we celebrate

  798. this

  799. deliverance

  800. from

  801. Rome

  802. are you

  803. the

  804. deliverer

  805. the one

  806. that God

  807. has anointed

  808. the one

  809. that we

  810. are waiting

  811. for

  812. and at

  813. the heart

  814. of his

  815. answer

  816. is verse

  817. 30

  818. I

  819. and the

  820. father

  821. are one

  822. what does

  823. this mean

  824. well there's

  825. been a lot

  826. of ink

  827. spilled

  828. throughout

  829. history

  830. on this

  831. one

  832. theologically

  833. but let's

  834. make a few

  835. observations

  836. first of

  837. all

  838. the oneness

  839. includes

  840. both a

  841. distinction

  842. there's a

  843. father

  844. and there's

  845. Jesus

  846. and they're

  847. separate

  848. and yet

  849. he says

  850. we are

  851. one

  852. and there's

  853. an ongoing

  854. theological

  855. discussion

  856. throughout

  857. history

  858. about whether

  859. this is

  860. the unity

  861. of purpose

  862. or oneness

  863. of purpose

  864. or whether

  865. it's a

  866. oneness

  867. of a

  868. greater

  869. oneness

  870. of essence

  871. I'm not

  872. going to

  873. answer that

  874. question

  875. today

  876. it's way

  877. too deep

  878. to try

  879. to get

  880. into the

  881. weeds

  882. of it

  883. but

  884. clearly

  885. Jesus

  886. is saying

  887. we have

  888. a oneness

  889. of purpose

  890. and I

  891. think that

  892. there's

  893. at least

  894. signs

  895. that he's

  896. pointing to

  897. what we

  898. would now

  899. understand to

  900. be the

  901. doctrine of

  902. the Trinity

  903. that God

  904. the God

  905. of the Bible

  906. is one

  907. God

  908. a unified

  909. God

  910. in three

  911. persons

  912. and those

  913. three persons

  914. are co-equal

  915. in value

  916. they have

  917. different roles

  918. in the Trinity

  919. but this is

  920. why we

  921. worship

  922. in the

  923. Christian

  924. church

  925. a triune

  926. God

  927. Bible verses

  928. like this

  929. where show

  930. clear distinction

  931. and yet

  932. absolute

  933. commitment

  934. to the

  935. unity

  936. of God

  937. as one

  938. and friends

  939. rather than

  940. trying to

  941. sort out

  942. the hairs

  943. I hope

  944. that this

  945. morning

  946. at least

  947. we can

  948. stop

  949. and revel

  950. in the

  951. mystery

  952. and the

  953. wonder

  954. of the

  955. word of

  956. God

  957. made

  958. flesh

  959. that we

  960. can think

  961. about this

  962. being God

  963. come to

  964. earth

  965. taking on

  966. human form

  967. so that

  968. he might

  969. accomplish

  970. a redemption

  971. for us

  972. that God

  973. had determined

  974. before the

  975. beginning of

  976. the world

  977. and that

  978. we would

  979. worship

  980. him

  981. and one

  982. of the

  983. reasons I

  984. don't want

  985. to spend

  986. all my

  987. time talking

  988. about that

  989. is that's

  990. not Jesus

  991. purpose in

  992. bringing this

  993. up

  994. Jesus purpose

  995. in bringing

  996. it up in

  997. this context

  998. is to say

  999. you want to

  1000. know why

  1001. I'm the

  1002. good shepherd

  1003. why I'm

  1004. the fulfillment

  1005. of all those

  1006. Old Testament

  1007. prophecies

  1008. it's because

  1009. I'm from

  1010. God

  1011. he has sent

  1012. me and he

  1013. and I are

  1014. one in

  1015. working together

  1016. and he says

  1017. three things

  1018. about that

  1019. first he appeals

  1020. to his good

  1021. works as

  1022. proof

  1023. you see

  1024. this in

  1025. verse 25

  1026. and 32

  1027. and 37

  1028. and 38

  1029. do you want

  1030. to know

  1031. who I am

  1032. look at

  1033. what I've

  1034. done

  1035. simply stop

  1036. and look

  1037. at what I

  1038. have done

  1039. he says

  1040. the source

  1041. of my power

  1042. is not

  1043. demonic

  1044. because I

  1045. bring life

  1046. to all

  1047. who interact

  1048. with me

  1049. the source

  1050. of my

  1051. goodness

  1052. as a good

  1053. shepherd

  1054. is that I

  1055. am one

  1056. with the

  1057. father

  1058. you have

  1059. seen

  1060. these

  1061. you cannot

  1062. deny

  1063. them

  1064. and if

  1065. you were

  1066. here this

  1067. morning

  1068. you're

  1069. exploring

  1070. who Jesus

  1071. is

  1072. or you're

  1073. wondering

  1074. who Jesus

  1075. is

  1076. I encourage

  1077. you look

  1078. at what

  1079. he's done

  1080. and pay

  1081. a lot of

  1082. attention

  1083. next week

  1084. as we

  1085. celebrate

  1086. good

  1087. Friday

  1088. and as we

  1089. celebrate

  1090. Easter

  1091. and we

  1092. think about

  1093. his death

  1094. and his

  1095. resurrection

  1096. for these

  1097. are the

  1098. greatest

  1099. works that

  1100. Jesus

  1101. will

  1102. do

  1103. and Jesus

  1104. is preparing

  1105. us to

  1106. see those

  1107. things

  1108. so that's

  1109. the first

  1110. thing he

  1111. says

  1112. the second

  1113. thing he

  1114. says

  1115. is that

  1116. my

  1117. oneness

  1118. with the

  1119. father

  1120. anchors

  1121. the security

  1122. of my

  1123. sheep

  1124. I am a

  1125. good shepherd

  1126. because I am

  1127. one with the

  1128. father

  1129. so verse 28

  1130. I give them

  1131. eternal life

  1132. and they will

  1133. never perish

  1134. and no one

  1135. will statch

  1136. them out of

  1137. my hand

  1138. my father

  1139. who has

  1140. given them

  1141. to me

  1142. is greater

  1143. than all

  1144. and no one

  1145. is able to

  1146. snatch them

  1147. out of the

  1148. father's

  1149. hand

  1150. pastor

  1151. John

  1152. Piper says

  1153. this about

  1154. this passage

  1155. speaking in the

  1156. words of

  1157. Jesus

  1158. the father

  1159. and I

  1160. are one

  1161. no one

  1162. can take

  1163. you from

  1164. me

  1165. because I

  1166. am stronger

  1167. than all

  1168. and no one

  1169. can take you

  1170. from my

  1171. father

  1172. because my

  1173. father is

  1174. stronger than

  1175. all

  1176. when you

  1177. are in

  1178. my

  1179. hand

  1180. you are

  1181. in his

  1182. hands

  1183. when you

  1184. are in

  1185. his

  1186. hand

  1187. you are

  1188. in my

  1189. hand

  1190. our

  1191. omnipotence

  1192. and our

  1193. unity

  1194. are your

  1195. safety

  1196. and your

  1197. salvation

  1198. friends

  1199. what great

  1200. comfort

  1201. this is

  1202. to know

  1203. Jesus as a

  1204. good shepherd

  1205. our relationship

  1206. with God

  1207. is secured

  1208. based on

  1209. his

  1210. initiative

  1211. him

  1212. finding us

  1213. and drawing

  1214. us in

  1215. him

  1216. knowing us

  1217. and calling

  1218. us to be

  1219. him

  1220. because our

  1221. salvation

  1222. is dependent

  1223. on his

  1224. work in

  1225. our hearts

  1226. we have

  1227. great security

  1228. and great

  1229. joy

  1230. and great

  1231. comfort

  1232. the wonderful

  1233. thing about

  1234. this truth

  1235. is that

  1236. the confidence

  1237. we have

  1238. is not

  1239. because this

  1240. is an

  1241. abstract

  1242. system

  1243. of logic

  1244. and of

  1245. theology

  1246. but it

  1247. is a

  1248. trust

  1249. in a

  1250. person

  1251. our good

  1252. shepherd

  1253. who has

  1254. come to

  1255. save us

  1256. so in

  1257. just a

  1258. minute we

  1259. will sing

  1260. when I

  1261. fear my

  1262. faith will

  1263. fail

  1264. Christ will

  1265. hold me

  1266. fast

  1267. when the

  1268. tempter

  1269. would prevail

  1270. he will

  1271. hold me

  1272. fast

  1273. I could

  1274. never keep

  1275. my hold

  1276. through life's

  1277. fearful path

  1278. for my

  1279. love is

  1280. often

  1281. cold

  1282. he

  1283. must

  1284. hold me

  1285. fast

  1286. Jesus

  1287. says

  1288. because I

  1289. am one

  1290. with the

  1291. father

  1292. if you

  1293. follow me

  1294. as your

  1295. good shepherd

  1296. I will

  1297. hold you

  1298. fast

  1299. the final

  1300. thing that

  1301. he says

  1302. here

  1303. the final

  1304. thing that

  1305. happens in

  1306. this is

  1307. that his

  1308. claim to

  1309. oneness

  1310. provokes a

  1311. response

  1312. you see it

  1313. in verse

  1314. 31

  1315. they pick up

  1316. stones again

  1317. to stone

  1318. him

  1319. for blasphemy

  1320. how dare you

  1321. call yourself

  1322. God

  1323. and he

  1324. challenges

  1325. them

  1326. and this

  1327. doesn't seem

  1328. like a

  1329. great theological

  1330. debate

  1331. it actually

  1332. seems like

  1333. it might be

  1334. a debate

  1335. tactic

  1336. to say

  1337. well wait

  1338. a minute

  1339. in Psalm

  1340. 82

  1341. 6

  1342. the

  1343. psalmist

  1344. refers to

  1345. the people

  1346. of God

  1347. who received

  1348. the revelation

  1349. at Sinai

  1350. that's the

  1351. context of

  1352. that verse

  1353. that they

  1354. are like

  1355. gods

  1356. little g

  1357. gods

  1358. and if

  1359. God is

  1360. willing to

  1361. do that

  1362. in his

  1363. word

  1364. why are

  1365. you

  1366. stoning

  1367. me

  1368. for calling

  1369. myself

  1370. the son

  1371. of God

  1372. that doesn't

  1373. make any

  1374. sense

  1375. at all

  1376. as one

  1377. commentator

  1378. says

  1379. in the

  1380. heat of

  1381. their

  1382. opposition

  1383. to what

  1384. Jesus

  1385. is saying

  1386. they are

  1387. partly

  1388. right

  1389. that is

  1390. he does

  1391. make himself

  1392. equal to

  1393. God

  1394. they're

  1395. partly

  1396. wrong

  1397. his

  1398. equality

  1399. with

  1400. God

  1401. does not

  1402. make him

  1403. a rival

  1404. to God

  1405. which is

  1406. what they

  1407. think

  1408. and they're

  1409. profoundly

  1410. mistaken

  1411. because they

  1412. don't understand

  1413. that the drift

  1414. of their own

  1415. scriptures

  1416. reveals how

  1417. he is the

  1418. fulfillment

  1419. of them

  1420. and they have

  1421. not known

  1422. God well

  1423. enough to

  1424. perceive

  1425. that this

  1426. revelation

  1427. that he

  1428. is

  1429. and brings

  1430. in

  1431. is continuity

  1432. with

  1433. and a

  1434. capstone

  1435. of the

  1436. revelation

  1437. that he's

  1438. already

  1439. provided

  1440. that Jesus

  1441. is the

  1442. fulfillment

  1443. of all

  1444. the things

  1445. that these

  1446. people have

  1447. been longing

  1448. for

  1449. and they're

  1450. rejecting him

  1451. because they

  1452. don't understand

  1453. them

  1454. and again

  1455. there is a

  1456. divided response

  1457. in verse 38

  1458. they seek to

  1459. arrest him

  1460. verse 39

  1461. I'm sorry

  1462. verse 40

  1463. through 42

  1464. people come

  1465. out

  1466. though the

  1467. religious leaders

  1468. seek to

  1469. squelch

  1470. Jesus

  1471. the people

  1472. hear

  1473. and they

  1474. long

  1475. and they

  1476. say

  1477. John never

  1478. did a sign

  1479. but this

  1480. man he is

  1481. everything that

  1482. John said

  1483. he would be

  1484. he is the

  1485. lamb of God

  1486. who takes

  1487. away the

  1488. sin of the

  1489. world

  1490. he is the

  1491. one to

  1492. bring life

  1493. and friends

  1494. this is the

  1495. this is then

  1496. the question

  1497. for all of

  1498. us

  1499. how do

  1500. we respond

  1501. Jesus

  1502. in verse

  1503. 37 and

  1504. 38

  1505. says this

  1506. look at the

  1507. works that I

  1508. do

  1509. if I didn't

  1510. do them

  1511. then they'll

  1512. believe in me

  1513. but if I

  1514. did

  1515. see the

  1516. father in

  1517. them

  1518. believe that

  1519. I am one

  1520. with the

  1521. father

  1522. and because

  1523. I am one

  1524. with the

  1525. father

  1526. I am a

  1527. good shepherd

  1528. and come

  1529. and believe

  1530. in me

  1531. for those

  1532. of you who

  1533. are here

  1534. this morning

  1535. and you

  1536. have already

  1537. said yes

  1538. to Jesus

  1539. know what

  1540. great comfort

  1541. it is

  1542. to know him

  1543. means that he

  1544. knows you

  1545. and if he

  1546. knows you

  1547. he will never

  1548. let you go

  1549. take great

  1550. comfort

  1551. in his love

  1552. for you

  1553. in his knowing

  1554. your name

  1555. and him

  1556. holding you

  1557. fast

  1558. and the

  1559. call

  1560. the call

  1561. for us

  1562. who are

  1563. seeking

  1564. the call

  1565. for us

  1566. who are

  1567. wondering

  1568. who he

  1569. is

  1570. look at

  1571. his words

  1572. look at

  1573. his works

  1574. look most

  1575. importantly

  1576. at his

  1577. death

  1578. and

  1579. resurrection

  1580. because what

  1581. we proclaim

  1582. this morning

  1583. is that the

  1584. good shepherd

  1585. has come

  1586. and he

  1587. calls us

  1588. to turn

  1589. to him

  1590. and in

  1591. faith

  1592. come to

  1593. him

  1594. and find

  1595. him to be

  1596. our good

  1597. shepherd

  1598. let's pray

  1599. lord we

  1600. thank you

  1601. this morning

  1602. for this

  1603. word

  1604. we thank you

  1605. for the

  1606. encouragement

  1607. that it

  1608. is

  1609. lord we

  1610. pray that

  1611. we would

  1612. find comfort

  1613. in you

  1614. lord we

  1615. pray for

  1616. those who

  1617. are seeking

  1618. lord that

  1619. they would

  1620. lord behold

  1621. your goodness

  1622. and embrace

  1623. you as their

  1624. good shepherd

  1625. we pray these

  1626. things in

  1627. jesus name

  1628. amen

  1629. very soon

  1630. you

  1631. thank you

  1632. for the

  1633. DP

  1634. he is

  1635. posting

  1636. pictures
