  1. Good morning.

  2. Good morning, everyone.

  3. It's great to see you this morning, great to be together,

  4. to worship the Lord this morning.

  5. I'd like to welcome everyone that's joining us still on the live stream

  6. and, of course, everyone here this morning.

  7. Just as a quick reminder, we're still in mask mode,

  8. so please, if you get up and move around, go ahead and keep your masks on.

  9. So let's turn our hearts towards the Lord together this morning

  10. with these words from the book of Hebrews.

  11. Therefore, brothers and sisters,

  12. since we have confidence to enter the most holy place

  13. by the blood of Jesus,

  14. by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain

  15. that is his body,

  16. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  17. let us draw near to God with a sincere heart

  18. and with the full assurance that faith brings,

  19. having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience

  20. and having our bodies washed with pure water.

  21. And from Psalms chapter 9,

    Psalms 9 chapter mention

  22. So let's stand together and let's praise the Lord together.

  23. Praise the Lord.

  24. His mercy is more.

  25. Stronger than darkness, new every morn.

  26. Our sins, they are many.

  27. His mercy is more.

  28. What love could remember?

  29. No wrongs we have done.

  30. Omnish and all-knowing,

  31. He counts not their sum.

  32. Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore.

  33. Our sins, they are many.

  34. His mercy is more.

  35. Praise the Lord.

  36. His mercy is more.

  37. Stronger than darkness, new every morn.

  38. Our sins, they are many.

  39. His mercy is more.

  40. His mercy is more.

  41. What patience would wait as we constantly roam.

  42. What Father so tender is calling us home.

  43. He welcomes the weak, new every morn.

  44. He welcomes the weakest, the vilest, the poor.

  45. Our sins, they are many.

  46. His mercy is more.

  47. Praise the Lord.

  48. His mercy is more.

  49. His mercy is more.

  50. Stronger than darkness, new every morn.

  51. Our sins, they are many.

  52. His mercy is more.

  53. What riches of kindness he lavished on us

  54. His blood was the payment, his life was the cost

  55. We stood neath a debt we could never afford

  56. And our sins they are many, his mercy is more

  57. Praise the Lord, his mercy is more

  58. Stronger than darkness, new every morn

  59. Our sins they are many, his mercy is more

  60. Praise the Lord, his mercy is more

  61. Stronger than darkness, new every morn

  62. Our sins they are many, his mercy is more

  63. Our sins they are many, his mercy is more

  64. Mercy is more

  65. You may be seated

  66. Morning

  67. Our scripture reading today is 1 John chapter 3 verses 11 through 18

    1 John 3:11–18

  68. Starting in verse 11

  69. For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning

  70. That we should love one another

  71. We should not be like Cain, who is of the evil one and murdered his brother

  72. And why did he murder him?

  73. Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous

  74. Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you

  75. We know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers

  76. Whoever does not love abides in death

  77. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer

  78. And you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him

  79. By this we know, love, that he laid down his life for us

  80. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers

  81. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need

  82. Yet closes his heart against him

  83. How does God's love abide in him?

  84. Little children, let us not love in word or talk

  85. But in deed and in truth

  86. Pray with me

  87. Father God

  88. We come to you this morning to worship you

  89. You are good

  90. You are perfect

  91. How can such a perfect God

  92. Love such imperfect people

  93. We rebelled against you

  94. Rejected you

  95. Yet in your mercy and grace

  96. You loved us

  97. You sought us

  98. You called us to love one another as you love us

  99. But we do not

  100. We find reasons to divide from one another

  101. And to create factions that breed resentment

  102. You've broken down the dividing wall of hostility

  103. But we erect new ones

  104. If a brother or sister disagrees with us on politics

  105. Or has a different background than us

  106. We do not seek to foster a loving relationship

  107. But devise justifications for hating them

  108. This is sin

  109. This is worldliness

  110. This is a rejection of your teaching

  111. And a slander on your name

  112. Have mercy on us

  113. Oh Lord

  114. Let's take a moment

  115. To confess our sins to God

  116. In our hearts

  117. Thank you Lord

  118. For the work of the cross

  119. For the example of Jesus Christ

  120. When we were his enemy

  121. He died for us

  122. To reconcile us to you

  123. Thank you that through his work

  124. We can be reconciled to each other

  125. Fill us with the Holy Spirit

  126. So that we can look into the face of one

  127. Who would be our enemy in the flesh

  128. And love them

  129. As you love us

  130. Help us to see their flaws

  131. And love them all the more

  132. As we remember the flaws and evil

  133. You saw in us

  134. When you died for us

  135. Fill us with your transforming love

  136. Help us to lean

  137. On your mercy and grace

  138. We love you

  139. We pray this in Jesus' name

  140. Amen

  141. Would you stand with me

  142. And receive these words of assurance

  143. This is from the Gospel of John

  144. For God so loved the world

  145. So much

  146. That he gave his one and only son

  147. So that everyone who believes in him

  148. Will not perish

  149. But have eternal life

  150. God sent his son into the world

  151. Not to judge the world

  152. But to save the world

  153. Through him

  154. There is no judgment

  155. Against anyone who believes in him

  156. Amen

  157. Please be seated

  158. Well welcome again to Trinity Baptist Church

  159. If you're new here

  160. We'd love to invite you to go to the website

  161. And maybe fill out the contact form

  162. So that we can reach out to you by email

  163. Also the email and website

  164. Is how we're keeping everyone in touch

  165. With things that are going on at the church

  166. Of which there are several

  167. So I'm going to try to bring them all

  168. To your attention now

  169. So Bridges of Hope is a ministry

  170. That we're deeply involved in

  171. And they're going to have a

  172. Playground cleanup day

  173. Coming up Saturday, May 1st

  174. So if you're interested in learning more about that

  175. Or signing up

  176. You can visit the Bridges of Hope website

  177. Also we have a women's picnic

  178. Coming up in Worcester Park

  179. So that's May 8th

  180. And we would ask that you would RSVP

  181. Because there's going to be food involved

  182. So you can go to the website

  183. To do that

  184. Our website

  185. Thirdly we have a congregational meeting

  186. Coming up on May 12th

  187. Where we'll be considering

  188. New officers for the church

  189. So please

  190. Save the date for that

  191. And then lastly

  192. If you're leaving town

  193. If you're in a season

  194. Where your time at Trinity

  195. Is coming to an end

  196. We'd love to know that

  197. So if you'd let the church office know that

  198. That would be great

  199. So if you'll bow your heads with me

  200. Let's go to the Lord together

  201. In prayer

  202. Father

  203. Thank you for making a way

  204. For us to draw near to you

  205. To come into your presence

  206. As clean, forgiven

  207. And fully restored

  208. Sons and daughters

  209. We praise you

  210. For your mighty works of salvation

  211. And redemption

  212. For intervening in human history

  213. That was headed for destruction

  214. For sending Jesus into the world

  215. For changing our hearts

  216. So that we may embrace Jesus as Savior

  217. And for giving us an unshakable hope

  218. For the future

  219. We pray for the world that we live in

  220. We pray that injustice

  221. We pray that injustice

  222. Tyranny

  223. Slavery

  224. Oppression

  225. And evil

  226. Would be suppressed

  227. And that a respect and care

  228. For the weak and vulnerable

  229. Would prevail

  230. We pray that the selfishness

  231. Greed

  232. And pride

  233. That cause

  234. Enmity and strife

  235. And strife

  236. And discord

  237. Would be put off

  238. And that peace

  239. Would prevail

  240. We pray that

  241. Hunger

  242. And poverty

  243. Homelessness

  244. And disease

  245. Would come to an end

  246. And a spirit of generosity

  247. And mercy

  248. Would grow

  249. Between all people

  250. And Father

  251. We pray for the hearts

  252. Of all people

  253. Everywhere

  254. That in the midst

  255. Of the confusion

  256. Of this world

  257. You would reveal yourself

  258. By your spirit

  259. And bring clarity

  260. We pray that the toxic path

  261. Of self-orientation

  262. Of the human heart

  263. Would be exposed

  264. And that you would bring

  265. Many to repentance

  266. And faith

  267. In Jesus

  268. Father

  269. Thank you for your common grace

  270. In restraining

  271. This virus

  272. We pray that you would give us

  273. Wisdom as we navigate

  274. Another season

  275. Of rapidly changing

  276. Circumstances

  277. And we pray for

  278. A continued spirit

  279. Of unity in Christ

  280. Among your people

  281. Here at Trinity

  282. We pray for those

  283. Among us

  284. Who are facing

  285. Difficult trials

  286. That are threatening

  287. To overwhelm

  288. And even

  289. Our faith

  290. And hope

  291. Father

  292. Be our refuge

  293. And strength

  294. And ever present

  295. Help

  296. In our time

  297. Of trouble

  298. Help us

  299. To cast

  300. All our anxieties

  301. And fears

  302. On you

  303. Knowing that you

  304. Care for us

  305. So much

  306. That you gave us

  307. Jesus

  308. And we pray

  309. For Pastor Greg

  310. As he brings us

  311. Your word

  312. This morning

  313. Open the eyes

  314. Of our hearts

  315. And give us ears

  316. To hear

  317. So that we may be able

  318. To receive

  319. What you have

  320. For us

  321. We thank you

  322. For hearing our prayers

  323. For Jesus' sake

  324. Amen

  325. This is the time

  326. When we would

  327. Normally collect

  328. The offering

  329. But I think

  330. As we all know

  331. By now

  332. You can go to

  333. The website

  334. To give

  335. And also

  336. There are boxes

  337. In the back

  338. That you can

  339. Make your offering

  340. Please stand

  341. As we continue

  342. To worship God

  343. Together in song

  344. What gift of grace

  345. Is Jesus

  346. Is Jesus

  347. My redeemer

  348. There is no more

  349. For heaven

  350. Now to give

  351. He is my joy

  352. My righteousness

  353. And freedom

  354. My steadfast love

  355. My deep and boundless peace

  356. To this I hold

  357. My hope is only Jesus

  358. For my life

  359. Is wholly bound to His

  360. Oh how strange and divine

  361. I can sing

  362. All is mine

  363. Yet not I

  364. But through Christ in me

  365. The night is dark

  366. But I am not forsaken

  367. For by my side

  368. The Savior

  369. He will stay

  370. I labor on

  371. In weakness

  372. And rejoicing

  373. For in my need

  374. His power is displayed

  375. To this I hold

  376. My shepherd will defend me

  377. Through the deepest valley

  378. He will lead

  379. He will lead

  380. Oh the night

  381. Has been won

  382. And I shall overcome

  383. Yet not I

  384. But through Christ

  385. In me

  386. No fate I dread

  387. I know I am forgiven

  388. The future sure

  389. The price it has been paid

  390. For Jesus bled

  391. And suffered

  392. And suffered for my pardon

  393. And He was raised

  394. To overthrow the grave

  395. To this I hold

  396. My sin has been defeated

  397. Jesus now

  398. And never is my plea

  399. Oh the chains are released

  400. I can sing

  401. I am free

  402. Yet not I

  403. But through Christ

  404. In me

  405. With every breath

  406. I long to follow

  407. Jesus

  408. For He hath said

  409. That He will bring me home

  410. And day by day

  411. I know He will renew me

  412. Until I stand with joy

  413. Before the throne

  414. To this I hold

  415. My hope is only Jesus

  416. All the glory evermore to Him

  417. When the race is complete

  418. Still my lips shall repeat

  419. Yet not I

  420. But through Christ in me

  421. When the race is complete

  422. Still my lips shall repeat

  423. Yet not I

  424. But through Christ in me

  425. Yet not I

  426. But through Christ in me

  427. You may be seated

  428. Well good morning church

  429. If you have a Bible

  430. Turn with me to John

    John 13 chapter mention

  431. Chapter 13

  432. Beginning at verse 21

  433. We will also put the words up on the screen

  434. For those of you who are here

  435. As you're doing that

  436. Just a brief sort of update

  437. About where we're going with our worship service

  438. As you know the governor has announced

  439. Some changes to the Connecticut COVID restrictions

  440. That will phase in over the course of the next month

  441. And so over the next few weeks

  442. We'll be making a few adjustments

  443. Throughout the pandemic

  444. One of our guiding principles has been

  445. To follow the requirements

  446. And consider the recommendations

  447. Of local and state authorities

  448. But not to impose additional precautions

  449. If those authorities indicate

  450. That they are no longer needed

  451. So here are a couple of changes

  452. That you can expect in the coming weeks

  453. Next Sunday, May 2nd

  454. There will be some changes

  455. At our outdoor service

  456. Which happens on Sunday afternoons

  457. So at our outdoor service

  458. Starting next Sunday

  459. Masks will no longer be required

  460. And we won't paint circles on the field

  461. You'll be free to sit wherever you like

  462. There's still plenty of space

  463. So there's plenty of space

  464. To have distance from one another

  465. If that would be helpful for you as well

  466. But on May 19th

  467. The guidelines for indoor gatherings will change

  468. And we're going to

  469. We're still discussing exactly

  470. How that's going to work in here

  471. But we'll explain more specifically

  472. How that will work

  473. How that will affect our indoor services

  474. When the time gets closer

  475. So in general

  476. We want to say

  477. As we look ahead

  478. To enjoying more freedom

  479. In upcoming weeks

  480. We know that some of you are thinking

  481. This is long overdue

  482. And others of you are thinking

  483. This is happening way too quickly

  484. Regardless of your perspective

  485. Let's be intentional to

  486. Pursue love and unity in the church

  487. By honoring and forbearing with one another

  488. Now Paul says in Galatians

  489. Use your freedom as an opportunity

  490. To serve one another

  491. So just, you know, practically

  492. Maybe you are ready to give and receive hugs

  493. That's okay

  494. And you know what?

  495. By this point we won't stop you

  496. Maybe you're not ready to give and receive hugs

  497. Maybe you don't want anyone to touch you at all

  498. That's fine too

  499. Okay?

  500. And some of you

  501. Didn't want to get a hug

  502. Regardless of COVID

  503. So here's a simple guideline

  504. That we can all put into practice

  505. If you're not sure

  506. What someone else might be comfortable with

  507. Just ask

  508. And don't assume

  509. Okay?

  510. Don't put somebody else in an awkward position

  511. As the guidelines change

  512. Let's look forward to enjoying more freedom

  513. But let's use our freedom

  514. To serve one another in love

  515. Amen?

  516. All right

  517. Let's read this passage

  518. Which actually is about

  519. Loving one another

  520. John 13

  521. Beginning at verse 21

  522. After saying these things

  523. Jesus was troubled in his spirit

  524. And testified

  525. Truly, truly

  526. I say to you

  527. One of you

  528. Will betray me

  529. The disciples looked at one another

  530. Uncertain of whom he spoke

  531. One of his disciples

  532. Whom Jesus loved

  533. Was reclining a table

  534. At Jesus' side

  535. So Simon Peter

  536. Motioned to him

  537. To ask Jesus

  538. Of whom he was speaking

  539. So that disciple

  540. Leaning back against Jesus

  541. Said to him

  542. Lord

  543. Who is it?

  544. Jesus answered

  545. It is he to whom

  546. I will give this morsel of bread

  547. When I have dipped it

  548. So when he had dipped the morsel

  549. He gave it to Judas

  550. The son of Simon Iscariot

  551. Then after he had taken the morsel

  552. Satan entered into him

  553. Jesus said to him

  554. What you are going to do

  555. Do quickly

  556. Now no one at the table knew

  557. Why he said this to him

  558. Some thought that

  559. Because Judas had the money bag

  560. Jesus was telling him

  561. Buy what we need for the feast

  562. Or that he should give something

  563. To the poor

  564. So after receiving the morsel of bread

  565. He immediately went out

  566. And it was night

  567. When he had gone out

  568. Jesus said

  569. Now is the son of man glorified

  570. And God is glorified in him

  571. If God is glorified in him

  572. God will also glorify him in himself

  573. And glorify him at once

  574. Little children

  575. Yet a little while

  576. I am with you

  577. You will seek me

  578. And just as I said to the Jews

  579. Now also I say to you

  580. Where I am going

  581. You cannot come

  582. A new commandment

  583. I give to you

  584. That you love one another

  585. Just as I have loved you

  586. You also are to love one another

  587. By this all people will know

  588. That you are my disciples

  589. If you have love

  590. For one another

  591. Simon Peter said to him

  592. Lord where are you going

  593. Jesus answered him

  594. Where I am going

  595. You cannot follow me now

  596. But you will follow afterward

  597. Peter said to him

  598. Lord

  599. Why can't I follow you now

  600. I will lay down my life for you

  601. Jesus answered

  602. Will you lay down your life for me

  603. Truly

  604. Truly

  605. I say to you

  606. The rooster will not crow

  607. Till you have denied me

  608. Three

  609. Times

  610. One of the distinguishing marks

  611. Of true followers of Jesus

  612. Is

  613. Love

  614. At the heart of the section

  615. We just read

  616. We heard those words of Jesus

  617. To his disciples

  618. Love

  619. One

  620. Another

  621. By this all people will know

  622. That you are my disciples

  623. If you have love

  624. For one another

  625. Now on the surface

  626. That command

  627. To love one another

  628. May sound nice

  629. And pleasant

  630. Relatively uncontroversial

  631. Universally appealing

  632. It sounds like something

  633. That a kindergarten teacher

  634. Would say

  635. To a group of young children

  636. Or perhaps even

  637. The carefree topic

  638. Of a Beatles song

  639. All you need is love

  640. And love is all you need

  641. Some people say

  642. That as long as you have love

  643. Rather vaguely defined

  644. It's okay to ignore

  645. More specific biblical commands

  646. But when we look carefully

  647. At what Jesus says here

  648. None of that is actually true

  649. A new commandment

  650. I give you

  651. Jesus says

  652. Just as I have loved you

  653. You also are

  654. To love one another

  655. Now you might ask

  656. How is that command new?

  657. Isn't the command

  658. To love your neighbor

  659. As yourself

  660. Found throughout the Old Testament

  661. And even in other religions?

  662. Yes it is

  663. But what is new

  664. Is this phrase

  665. Just as I have loved you

  666. Jesus' followers

  667. Are to embody

  668. And express

  669. The kind of deep

  670. Patient

  671. And enduring

  672. Love

  673. That we have received

  674. From Jesus himself

  675. You see in this passage

  676. Jesus doesn't just tell us

  677. To love one another

  678. He shows us

  679. How to love one another

  680. In this passage

  681. We see Jesus' love

  682. Is deep

  683. Patient

  684. And enduring

  685. We see first

  686. Jesus' deep love

  687. For a loyal disciple

  688. Second

  689. We'll see Jesus'

  690. Patient love

  691. For a treacherous disciple

  692. And third

  693. We'll see Jesus'

  694. Enduring love

  695. For a hot-headed disciple

  696. So first

  697. In verse 23 to 25

  698. We see Jesus' deep love

  699. For a loyal disciple

  700. Verse 23 says

  701. One of his disciples

  702. Whom Jesus loved

  703. Was reclining

  704. At table

  705. At Jesus' side

  706. And verse 25 says

  707. So that disciple

  708. Leaning back

  709. Against Jesus

  710. Said to him

  711. Lord who is it?

  712. Now you might wonder

  713. Who is this unnamed

  714. Disciple whom Jesus loved?

  715. He appears at key moments

  716. In the gospel of John

  717. This is actually

  718. The first time

  719. He appears explicitly

  720. Then he appears

  721. In chapter 19

  722. At the cross

  723. Along with a small group

  724. Of women

  725. Who followed Jesus

  726. To the end

  727. He's also a witness

  728. To the empty tomb

  729. In chapter 20

  730. Along with Peter

  731. And then in chapter 21

  732. He appears

  733. Again along with Peter

  734. On the shore

  735. Of the Sea of Galilee

  736. When Jesus cooks breakfast

  737. For the disciples

  738. And in the next

  739. To last verse

  740. Of the gospel

  741. Chapter 21

  742. Verse 24 of John

  743. This disciple

  744. Who Jesus loved

  745. Identifies himself

  746. He says

  747. This is the disciple

  748. Who is bearing witness

  749. About these things

  750. And who has written

  751. These things

  752. You see

  753. He's identifying himself

  754. As the author

  755. Of the book

  756. He's sort of saying

  757. You've seen me

  758. In the story

  759. Now I want you to know

  760. I'm the one

  761. Who wrote these things down

  762. So even though

  763. This disciple

  764. Is never named

  765. Ever since the early church

  766. He's been identified

  767. With John

  768. The gospel writer

  769. Now John was a common name

  770. In the early church

  771. So a few scholars

  772. Have suggested

  773. That John was a close

  774. Associate of Jesus

  775. Though not one of the twelve

  776. And there's some evidence

  777. That could support that theory

  778. But most traditional

  779. Biblical scholars

  780. Have concluded

  781. That the gospel writer

  782. Was one of the twelve

  783. None other than

  784. John the son of Zebedee

  785. Who's mentioned

  786. By name

  787. In all the other gospels

  788. But is not mentioned

  789. By name

  790. In John's gospel

  791. So the other gospels

  792. Identify Peter

  793. James and John

  794. As sort of the inner core

  795. Of Jesus' twelve disciples

  796. Now some people

  797. Have wondered

  798. Why does John

  799. Identify himself

  800. As the disciple

  801. Whom Jesus loved

  802. Rather than referring

  803. To himself by name

  804. Or in some other way

  805. D.A. Carson

  806. Made a helpful statement

  807. About this

  808. He says

  809. This is not a statement

  810. Of arrogance

  811. Or superiority

  812. As if he was boasting

  813. I'm loved more

  814. Than the others

  815. But rather of wonder

  816. And humility

  817. How amazing it is

  818. That I have been loved

  819. By the Savior himself

  820. And so here

  821. In this passage

  822. We see a picture

  823. Of Jesus' deep love

  824. His brotherly affection

  825. For his loyal friend

  826. John was reclining

  827. At table

  828. At Jesus' side

  829. Literally

  830. That

  831. It says

  832. In the bosom

  833. Of Jesus

  834. Leaning on Jesus' chest

  835. It's the same phrase

  836. That was used

  837. Back in chapter 1

  838. Verse 18

  839. To talk about

  840. Jesus' relationship

  841. With God the Father

  842. Chapter 1

  843. Verse 18

  844. Says

  845. Jesus was

  846. At the Father's side

  847. Or in the bosom

  848. Of the Father

  849. From all eternity

  850. It's an image

  851. Of God the Father

  852. And God the Son

  853. In deep fellowship

  854. And joyful communion

  855. With one another

  856. From all eternity

  857. And John

  858. Has found himself

  859. Being drawn

  860. Into that same

  861. Deep fellowship

  862. And joyful communion

  863. With Jesus

  864. Now at special meals

  865. Like the Passover

  866. People back then

  867. Would recline

  868. On couches

  869. Around a low table

  870. And so here we see

  871. John reclining

  872. Next to Jesus

  873. Sort of comfortably

  874. Leaning on him

  875. Quietly asking him

  876. A question

  877. He's completely

  878. At peace

  879. In the presence

  880. Of Jesus

  881. Now to some of us

  882. The image of John

  883. Who was by the way

  884. A fisherman

  885. Right

  886. Think muscular

  887. Blue collar worker

  888. With calloused hands

  889. Leaning on Jesus

  890. At the dinner table

  891. Might seem

  892. A little strange

  893. So let me put this

  894. In context

  895. In the Jewish culture

  896. Of Jesus' time

  897. Romantic or sexual intimacy

  898. Between two people

  899. Of the same sex

  900. Was absolutely forbidden

  901. It was clearly understood

  902. By everyone

  903. As being completely

  904. Out of bounds

  905. But because of that

  906. Very clear boundary

  907. There was lots of space

  908. In that culture

  909. For demonstrations

  910. Of physical affection

  911. Or emotional closeness

  912. Between men

  913. Or between women

  914. So in both

  915. The Old and New Testaments

  916. You can find

  917. Grown men

  918. Soldiers

  919. Warriors

  920. Embracing each other

  921. Crying on each other's

  922. Shoulders

  923. Sitting close

  924. To one another

  925. Poetically recounting

  926. Their friendship

  927. And even here

  928. Leaning back

  929. On another's chest

  930. While reclining

  931. On a couch

  932. None of that

  933. Had any romantic

  934. Overtones

  935. None of it

  936. Would have felt

  937. Awkward

  938. Or weird

  939. None of it

  940. Would have been judged

  941. As unmanly

  942. It was all genuine

  943. And sincere

  944. Brotherly love

  945. Now by contrast

  946. Our modern secular culture

  947. Celebrates all kinds

  948. Of romantic

  949. And sexual relationships

  950. Regardless of the genders

  951. Of people involved

  952. But one of the sad

  953. And rarely acknowledged

  954. Consequences of this

  955. Is that it has become

  956. Much less safe

  957. For people of the same gender

  958. And especially for men

  959. To express deep affection

  960. Or deep emotion

  961. To one another

  962. Without fear

  963. Of being misunderstood

  964. I can think of

  965. Multiple occasions

  966. Where men have told me

  967. That for years

  968. Or even decades

  969. They have greatly feared

  970. Expressing affection

  971. And emotion

  972. And vulnerability

  973. In front of other men

  974. Because their intentions

  975. Were severely misunderstood

  976. At some point

  977. In the past

  978. Fifty years ago

  979. The sexual revolution

  980. Promised free love

  981. It has never delivered

  982. On that promise

  983. It has only made us

  984. As a society

  985. More emotionally withdrawn

  986. More relationally isolated

  987. More confused

  988. And anxious

  989. More broken

  990. And addicted

  991. Now our secular culture

  992. Is continuing

  993. Along that road

  994. But the Christian church

  995. Has an opportunity

  996. To be beautifully

  997. Countercultural

  998. Not only in our

  999. Increasingly distinctive teaching

  1000. About Christian marriage

1001. But also in our practice

  1002. Of Christian friendship

  1003. See as a church

  1004. It's important for us

  1005. To hold fast

  1006. To what the Bible

  1007. Has always taught

  1008. That God's design

  1009. Is that followers

  1010. Of Jesus

  1011. Must only pursue

  1012. Sexual intimacy

  1013. Within the context

  1014. Of male-female marriage

  1015. Because only that relationship

  1016. Reflects the steadfast

  1017. Covenant love of Christ

  1018. For one who is

  1019. Fundamentally different

  1020. Than himself

  1021. Namely us

  1022. The church

1023. But as we hold fast

  1024. To that biblical view

  1025. Of marriage

  1026. We as the church

  1027. Also have the opportunity

  1028. To cultivate a community

  1029. Where friendships

  1030. Among brothers

  1031. And among sisters

  1032. Characterized by openness

  1033. And honesty

  1034. Affection

  1035. And vulnerability

  1036. Respect

  1037. And care

  1038. Can flourish

  1039. Now that won't happen

  1040. Automatically

  1041. But it will happen

  1042. As we experience

  1043. And receive

  1044. That deep fellowship

  1045. And joyful communion

  1046. That Jesus

  1047. Has enjoyed

  1048. With the Father

  1049. From all eternity

  1050. And that he now

  1051. Invites us into

  1052. Through his Holy Spirit

  1053. Living in us

  1054. When we experience that

  1055. We can build

  1056. That same deep fellowship

  1057. And joyful communion

  1058. And brotherly

  1059. And sisterly affection

  1060. With one another

  1061. In Christ

  1062. Now the specific ways

  1063. That people express emotion

  1064. Or communicate affection

1065. Will vary from one culture

  1066. To another

  1067. My Italian relatives

  1068. Tend to communicate emotion

  1069. And express affection

  1070. In a different way

  1071. Than my Swedish

  1072. And German relatives

1073. We won't all do this

  1074. Exactly the same way

  1075. That's fine

  1076. But earlier this week

  1077. I experienced

  1078. This brotherly affection

1079. As I met with the other pastors

  1080. In Bridges of Hope

  1081. After our business meeting

1082. We spent an hour and a half

  1083. Eating, sharing,

1084. And praying with each other

  1085. Now because of COVID

1086. Most of us hadn't seen

  1087. Each other in person

  1088. Since the fall

  1089. But immediately

  1090. There was openness

  1091. And vulnerability

  1092. And lamenting

  1093. And joy

1094. The fruit of seven years

  1095. Of serving together

  1096. As brothers

  1097. Crying, laughing, sharing, praying

  1098. Almost yelling

  1099. Not angrily

  1100. But just excitedly

  1101. Hugging or

  1102. In some cases

  1103. Fist bumping

1104. It was a beautiful thing

1105. You see as we receive

  1106. Jesus' love for us

  1107. We're free to pursue

  1108. Deep and affectionate

  1109. And Christ-honoring friendships

  1110. With one another

1111. In the body of Christ

  1112. And that can be

  1113. An attractive picture

  1114. For a world

  1115. That longs

  1116. For relational connection

1117. So that's the first picture

  1118. Of Jesus' love

  1119. That we see

  1120. Jesus' deep love

  1121. For a loyal friend

1122. But we not only see that

1123. We also see Jesus' patient love

  1124. For a treacherous disciple

  1125. For a traitor

  1126. Judas

1127. We see this in verses

  1128. 21 through 30

  1129. Last week

  1130. Pastor Nick pointed out

  1131. That Judas was there

  1132. All along

  1133. At the last supper

1134. And when Jesus was washing

  1135. His disciples' feet

1136. He appears in verse 2

  1137. Verse 11

  1138. Verse 18

  1139. And now here

  1140. Jesus says

  1141. Truly, truly

  1142. I say to you

  1143. One of you

  1144. Will betray me

  1145. The other disciples

1146. Didn't know who it was

  1147. But Jesus did

  1148. From the very beginning

  1149. Jesus was aware

  1150. That Judas

  1151. Would hand him over

  1152. To his enemies

  1153. In the end

1154. But what we see here

  1155. Is that Jesus

  1156. Demonstrated kindness

  1157. And offered friendship

  1158. To Judas

1159. All the way to the end

1160. He washed all the disciples' feet

  1161. Including Judas

  1162. The other Gospels

  1163. Tell us that Judas

  1164. Was present

  1165. When Jesus

  1166. Broke the bread

  1167. And said

  1168. This is my body

  1169. And shared the cup

  1170. And said

  1171. This is my blood

  1172. Of the new covenant

  1173. Now Judas even

  1174. Would have received that

  1175. And in fact

1176. It seems from John's account

  1177. That Judas was sitting

  1178. Right next to Jesus

  1179. Because otherwise

1180. It would have been hard

  1181. For Jesus

1182. To hand him that piece

  1183. Of bread directly

1184. After he had dipped it

  1185. Into the dish

  1186. In the ancient world

1187. It was a sign of honor

  1188. And friendship

1189. For the host of a meal

  1190. In this case Jesus

1191. To take a piece of bread

1192. And dip it into the dish

  1193. Which would have been

1194. Some kind of a dip

1195. And hand it to a guest

  1196. At a meal

  1197. So Jesus is offering

  1198. His friendship to Judas

1199. All the way to the end

  1200. Even though he knew

  1201. That Judas would

  1202. Ultimately reject it

  1203. And in the end

  1204. We see that Judas

1205. Walks out into the night

  1206. He walks out

  1207. Into literal

  1208. And spiritual darkness

  1209. Never again to return

  1210. To the table

  1211. With Jesus' disciples

  1212. Now it's also important

  1213. For us to notice

1214. What Jesus did not do

  1215. Towards Judas

  1216. Jesus did not negotiate

  1217. A compromise

  1218. Between his mission

  1219. Which he had received

  1220. From the Father

  1221. And Judas' idea

1222. Of how things should be done

  1223. Now the Bible

  1224. Never explicitly tells us

  1225. What Judas objected to

  1226. About Jesus

  1227. That motivated him

  1228. To betray Jesus

  1229. Probably the best guess

  1230. Out there

  1231. Is that Judas

  1232. Was sympathetic

  1233. To the zealot movement

  1234. That wanted to start

  1235. An uprising

  1236. And drive out

  1237. The hated Roman government

  1238. And Judas was disappointed

  1239. When it became clear

  1240. That Jesus was refusing

  1241. To use violence

1242. John 12 also tells us

1243. That Judas was a greedy thief

  1244. In John 12 verse 6

    John 12:6

  1245. Too easily motivated

  1246. By the prospect

  1247. Of financial gain

  1248. But whatever the differences

  1249. Were

  1250. They were significant enough

  1251. And Judas

  1252. And Jesus

  1253. Did not

  1254. Do

  1255. Jesus did not seek

  1256. To keep Judas

  1257. On his team

  1258. At all costs

  1259. He did not

  1260. Compromise

  1261. Who he was

1262. And what he stood for

  1263. Also

  1264. After Judas

  1265. Left

  1266. Jesus doesn't

1267. Run out into the night

  1268. Chasing after Judas

  1269. And saying

  1270. Please please please

  1271. Come back

  1272. And don't leave

  1273. No actually

  1274. In verse 27

  1275. Jesus basically says

  1276. Okay

1277. Get it over with now

1278. Do what you're gonna do

  1279. Don't delay

  1280. When it was time

  1281. For Judas to go

  1282. Jesus let him go

  1283. Even though

  1284. He had patiently

  1285. Loved him

  1286. And showed kindness

  1287. And extended friendship

  1288. To him

  1289. For a long

  1290. Long time

1291. Now what does it look like

  1292. In this case

  1293. To follow Jesus' command

  1294. Love one another

1295. As I have loved you

  1296. What is perhaps

1297. You can think of people

  1298. Whom you considered

  1299. Brothers or sisters

  1300. In Christ

  1301. Who have walked out

  1302. Of the fellowship

  1303. Of believers

  1304. Into spiritual darkness

  1305. And have not returned

  1306. Or maybe you've been

  1307. On a personal level

  1308. Backstabbed

  1309. Or slandered

  1310. Or attacked

  1311. Or abandoned

  1312. By someone who you

1313. Thought was on your side

1314. What does it look like

  1315. To love patiently

  1316. And wisely

1317. In the face of betrayal

  1318. Well four practical things

  1319. That the scriptures

  1320. Teach us

  1321. First

  1322. Don't be surprised

  1323. By betrayal

  1324. Matthew 24 verse 10

    Matthew 24:10

  1325. Jesus told his disciples

  1326. Many will fall away

  1327. And betray one another

  1328. And hate one another

  1329. Many false prophets

  1330. Will arise

  1331. And lead many astray

  1332. The love of many

  1333. Will grow cold

1334. The book of 1 John

1335. Which we read from earlier

1336. Was written to a church

  1337. That had just seen

1338. Some of their own members

  1339. Walk out

1340. And embrace a false teaching

  1341. And then begin slandering

  1342. Those who remained

  1343. In the church

1344. It was a very confusing

  1345. And disorienting experience

  1346. Betrayal is always

  1347. Feels very confusing

  1348. And disorienting

  1349. Now unlike Jesus

  1350. We cannot know

  1351. In advance

  1352. For certain

  1353. Who will betray us

1354. But when it does happen

  1355. Jesus says

  1356. We shouldn't be surprised

  1357. Second

1358. When we have been betrayed

  1359. The scriptures invite us

  1360. To bring our pain

  1361. To Jesus

  1362. Because Jesus knows

  1363. That pain

  1364. Very well

  1365. Verse 18

  1366. Jesus quoted

  1367. From Psalm 41 9

  1368. Which says

  1369. Even my close friend

  1370. In whom I trusted

  1371. Who ate my bread

1372. Has lifted up his heel

  1373. Against me

  1374. It's a cry of

  1375. Shock and pain

  1376. And anguish

  1377. My friend

1378. Has walked out on me

  1379. He's taken advantage

  1380. Of me

  1381. Most of us

  1382. Expect opposition

  1383. From

  1384. Sort of the world

  1385. Out there

  1386. People who don't know

  1387. Us very well

  1388. May not be sympathetic

  1389. To us

1390. But it's far more painful

  1391. When a close friend

  1392. Or a spouse

1393. Or a fellow church member

  1394. Turns on us

  1395. Or takes advantage

  1396. Of us

1397. Or leaves us in the dust

  1398. Or simply walks away

  1399. And never comes back

  1400. But in the face

  1401. Of betrayal

  1402. Jesus invites us

  1403. To bring our pain

  1404. And anguish

  1405. Before him

  1406. Read Psalm 41

  1407. Or Psalm 55

  1408. Both of those psalms

  1409. Written by people

  1410. Who had experienced

  1411. Betrayal

1412. And both of these psalms

  1413. Express the anguish

  1414. Of betrayal

  1415. And the longing

  1416. For justice

  1417. To be done

  1418. But they ultimately

  1419. Lead us to cast

  1420. Our burdens

  1421. On the Lord

  1422. And to trust him

  1423. Step by step

  1424. So don't be surprised

  1425. By betrayal

  1426. Bring your pain

  1427. To Jesus

  1428. Third

  1429. Love with

  1430. Patience

  1431. Jesus patiently

  1432. Extended

  1433. Kindness

  1434. And offered

  1435. Friendship to Judas

  1436. And sometimes

  1437. In order to follow

  1438. Jesus

  1439. We must do

  1440. The same thing

  1441. For an extended

  1442. Period of time

  1443. To people

  1444. Who will ultimately

  1445. Turn on us

  1446. And desert us

  1447. Romans 12 says

  1448. If your enemy

  1449. Is hungry

  1450. Feed him

  1451. If he is thirsty

  1452. Give him something

  1453. To drink

  1454. For by so doing

  1455. You will heap

  1456. Burning coals

  1457. On his head

  1458. Do not be overcome

  1459. By evil

  1460. But overcome evil

  1461. With good

  1462. You see we can't

  1463. Calculate in advance

  1464. Whether or not

  1465. Somebody

  1466. Will ever appreciate

  1467. Our efforts

  1468. Or be reconciled

  1469. With us

  1470. Or be reconciled

  1471. Or turned back

  1472. To Jesus

  1473. Long ago

  1474. Augustine put it

  1475. This way

  1476. He wrote

  1477. Do not think

  1478. That the wicked

  1479. Are in the world

  1480. For no purpose

  1481. Or that God

  1482. Makes no good use

  1483. Of them

  1484. Every wicked

  1485. Person lives

  1486. Either that he

  1487. May be corrected

  1488. Or that through him

  1489. The righteous

  1490. May be tried

  1491. And tested

  1492. Would that those

  1493. Who now test us

  1494. Were converted

  1495. And tried with us

  1496. Yet though they

  1497. Continue to try us

1498. Let us not hate them

1499. For we do not know

  1500. Whether any of them

  1501. Will persist

  1502. To the end

  1503. Of their evil ways

  1504. See the Lord

  1505. Calls us to love

  1506. With patience

  1507. But finally

  1508. He also calls us

  1509. To love with wisdom

  1510. There are times

  1511. When like Judas

  1512. Someone persists

  1513. In rejecting

  1514. Every last token

  1515. Of kindness

  1516. Every last offer

  1517. Of friendship

  1518. Every last call

  1519. To repentance

  1520. Judas walked out

  1521. Into the night

1522. And Jesus let him go

  1523. Jesus had done

  1524. All that God

  1525. Had given him

  1526. To do for Judas

  1527. And Judas

  1528. Had only become

  1529. More hardened

  1530. In his unbelief

  1531. There was nothing

  1532. More that needed

  1533. To be done

  1534. And there are times

  1535. When we have all

  1536. Done all that

  1537. The Lord has

  1538. Commanded us to do

  1539. For someone else

  1540. And still they show

  1541. No remorse

  1542. No repentance

  1543. No openness

  1544. To change

  1545. Perhaps they keep

  1546. On hurling accusations

  1547. At us

  1548. Or perhaps they demand

  1549. That we abandon

  1550. Our Christian principles

  1551. In order to stay

  1552. With them

  1553. And in those circumstances

  1554. The wise and righteous

  1555. Thing to do

  1556. Is to simply

  1557. Let that person go

  1558. And hold on

  1559. To Jesus

  1560. Not to take vengeance

  1561. Into our own hands

  1562. God reminds us

  1563. Vengeance is mine

  1564. Says the Lord

  1565. But simply to release

  1566. That person

  1567. Into God's hands

  1568. And recognize

  1569. That there is

  1570. There seems to be

  1571. Nothing more

  1572. At this point

  1573. That we can do

  1574. So we've seen

  1575. Jesus deep love

  1576. For a loyal disciple

  1577. We've seen

  1578. Jesus patient love

  1579. For a traitor

  1580. And finally

  1581. We see Jesus

  1582. Enduring love

  1583. For a hot headed

  1584. Disciple

  1585. Verse 36 to 38

  1586. We see Jesus

  1587. This conversation

  1588. With Peter

  1589. Simon Peter

  1590. Said to him

1591. Lord where are you going

  1592. Jesus answered him

  1593. Where I'm going

1594. You can't follow me now

1595. But you will follow afterward

  1596. Peter said to him

  1597. Lord

  1598. Why can't I follow you now

  1599. I will lay down

  1600. My life for you

  1601. Jesus answered

  1602. Will you

  1603. Lay down your life

  1604. For me

  1605. Truly truly

  1606. I say to you

1607. The rooster will not crow

1608. Till you have denied me

  1609. Three times

1610. Peter had good intentions here

  1611. He had just finished

  1612. A good meal

  1613. He was sitting

  1614. In a comfortable room

  1615. With people he knew

  1616. He was zealous

  1617. For Jesus

  1618. He was also

  1619. Naturally confident

  1620. In himself

1621. And in his own capabilities

  1622. And unafraid

  1623. To speak his mind

  1624. And so he promised

  1625. Unwavering loyalty

  1626. To Jesus

  1627. Even to the point

1628. Of giving his own life

  1629. For Jesus

  1630. He told Jesus

  1631. I'm ready now

  1632. But Jesus knew Peter

  1633. Far better than

  1634. Peter knew himself

  1635. Jesus knew that

  1636. He was about to

  1637. Lay down his life

  1638. For Peter

  1639. And not the other

  1640. Way around

  1641. Jesus knew that

  1642. Peter had to be

  1643. Humbled

  1644. By his upcoming

  1645. Failure

  1646. Before he could

  1647. Be raised up

  1648. To be a shepherd

  1649. Of Jesus' flock

  1650. Consider Jesus

  1651. Enduring love

  1652. For hot-headed

  1653. Peter

  1654. Notice

  1655. Jesus didn't

  1656. Dismiss

  1657. Peter's

  1658. Misguided

  1659. Overzealous

  1660. Enthusiasm

  1661. Jesus didn't

  1662. Write Peter

  1663. Off

  1664. He didn't

  1665. Say you're

  1666. Never

  1667. You're someone

  1668. Who will

  1669. Never learn

  1670. You're someone

  1671. Who I can

  1672. Never trust

  1673. No he said

  1674. You're not

  1675. Ready now

  1676. But you will

  1677. Follow later

  1678. And when Peter

  1679. Said why

  1680. Not now

  1681. Jesus said

  1682. Truly truly

  1683. I say to you

  1684. The rooster

  1685. Will not crow

  1686. Until you deny

  1687. Me three times

  1688. Do you notice

  1689. That same

  1690. Solemn phrase

  1691. Truly truly

  1692. I say to you

  1693. Appears at the

  1694. Beginning of this

  1695. Passage

  1696. In verse 21

  1697. When Jesus is

  1698. Talking about

  1699. Judas who will

  1700. Betray him

  1701. And at the end

  1702. When he's talking

  1703. About Peter

  1704. Who will deny

  1705. Him

  1706. Truly truly

  1707. I say to you

  1708. You see

  1709. What's the

  1710. Difference between

  1711. Peter

  1712. And Judas

  1713. It's not

  1714. That Peter

  1715. Was a good

  1716. Guy

  1717. And Judas

  1718. Was a bad

  1719. Guy

  1720. It's not

  1721. That Peter

  1722. Had a

  1723. Squeaky clean

  1724. Straight A

  1725. Record of

  1726. Following Jesus

  1727. And therefore

  1728. Got promoted

  1729. To leadership

  1730. In the church

  1731. And Judas

  1732. Was an F

  1733. On the same

  1734. Night

  1735. Both of them

  1736. Shamefully

  1737. Abandoned

  1738. Their savior

  1739. The difference

  1740. Is that Peter

  1741. Eventually

  1742. Repented

  1743. And was

  1744. Restored

  1745. But Judas

  1746. Never did

  1747. You see

  1748. Jesus doesn't

  1749. Choose people

  1750. Who have

  1751. Squeaky clean

  1752. Straight A

  1753. Spiritual records

  1754. And who will

  1755. Never have

  1756. Any shameful

  1757. Failures

  1758. Jesus takes

  1759. People who

  1760. Have shamefully

  1761. Failed

  1762. And

  1763. Who are

  1764. Willing to

  1765. Face up

  1766. To that

  1767. Failure

  1768. And he

  1769. Calls them

  1770. To repentance

  1771. And he

  1772. Gives them

  1773. A meaningful

  1774. Future

  1775. Now

  1776. If you

  1777. Read John

  1778. 21

  1779. There's also

  1780. An uncomfortable

  1781. Conversation

  1782. That Jesus

  1783. Has with

  1784. Peter

  1785. On the

  1786. Shore of

  1787. The sea

  1788. Of galilee

  1789. Jesus

  1790. Doesn't

  1791. Just sweep

  1792. It all

  1793. Under the

  1794. Rug

  1795. And pretend

  1796. It never

  1797. Happened

  1798. No

  1799. What Jesus

  1800. Does there

  1801. Is he

  1802. Actually

  1803. Brings

  1804. Peter

  1805. Face

  1806. To face

  1807. With

  1808. His

  1809. Moment

  1810. Of

  1811. Greatest

  1812. Failure

  1813. And yet

  1814. In that

  1815. Place

  1816. He

  1817. Calls

  1818. Him

  1819. To follow

  1820. Him

  1821. And to

  1822. Be

  1823. Restored

  1824. It was

  1825. Painful

  1826. But it

  1827. Was

  1828. Restorative

  1829. If you

  1830. Read that

  1831. Conversation

  1832. Brothers

  1833. Brothers and

  1834. Sisters

  1835. Consider

  1836. Jesus

  1837. Enduring

  1838. Love

  1839. For

  1840. People

  1841. Like

  1842. Us

  1843. Jesus

  1844. Loves

  1845. Us

  1846. In

  1847. Full

  1848. Knowledge

  1849. Of

  1850. Who

  1851. We

  1852. Are

  1853. And you

  1854. Know

  1855. As we

  1856. Continue

  1857. To walk

  1858. With

  1859. Jesus

  1860. Jesus

  1861. Shares

  1862. Some

  1863. Of

  1864. That

  1865. Knowledge

  1866. With

  1867. Us

  1868. Sometimes

  1869. Jesus

  1870. Encourages

  1871. Us

  1872. And

  1873. Challenges

  1874. Us

  1875. And

  1876. Shows

  1877. Us

  1878. That

  1879. By

  1880. His

  1881. Grace

  1882. We

  1883. Can

  1884. Do

  1885. Something

  1886. That

  1887. We

  1888. Never

  1889. Expected

  1890. To

  1891. Be

  1892. Able

  1893. To

  1894. Do

  1895. He

  1896. Gives

  1897. Us

  1898. New

  1899. Confidence

  1900. And

  1901. Hope

  1902. That

  1903. By

  1904. The

  1905. Holy

  1906. Spirit

  1907. Working

  1908. In

  1909. Us

  1910. That

  1911. He

  1912. Can

  1913. Work

  1914. Through

  1915. Us

  1916. But

  1917. Sometimes

  1918. He

  1919. Also

  1920. Shows

  1921. Us

  1922. Our

  1923. Own

  1924. Dark

  1925. Side

  1926. That

  1927. We

  1928. Don't

  1929. Want

  1930. To

  1931. Face

  1932. Up

  1933. To

  1934. When

  1935. Was

  1936. The

  1937. Last

  1938. Time

  1939. That

  1940. Jesus

  1941. Shown

  1942. His

  1943. Spotlight

  1944. Into

  1945. A

  1946. Corner

  1947. Of

  1948. Your

  1949. Life

  1950. That

  1951. You

  1952. Previously

  1953. Thought

  1954. Was

  1955. A-OK

  1956. When

  1957. Was

  1958. The

  1959. Last

  1960. Time

  1961. That

  1962. You

  1963. Thought

  1964. You

  1965. Were

  1966. Ready

  1967. To

  1968. Handle

  1969. A

  1970. Spiritual

  1971. Test

  1972. And

  1973. If

  1974. You're

  1975. Honest

  1976. You

  1977. Sort

  1978. Of

  1979. Flopped

  1980. Jesus

  1981. Is

  1982. Not

  1983. Afraid

  1984. Of

  1985. Wounding

  1986. Our

  1987. Pride

  1988. But

  1989. Remember

  1990. He

  1991. Loves

  1992. Us

  1993. In

  1994. Full

  1995. Knowledge

  1996. Of

  1997. Who

  1998. We

  1999. Are

  2000. Jesus

  2001. Is

  2002. Not

  2003. Surprised

  2004. When

  2005. Our

  2006. Shameful

  2007. Failures

  2008. Come

  2009. To

  2010. Light

  2011. And

  2012. When

  2013. We

  2014. Recognize

  2015. Them

  2016. For

  2017. What

  2018. They

  2019. Are

  2020. He

  2021. Loves

  2022. Us

  2023. Already

  2024. In

  2025. Anyway

  2026. And

  2027. So

  2028. Even

  2029. When

  2030. He

  2031. Brings

  2032. Us

  2033. To

  2034. Face

  2035. Our

  2036. Shameful

  2037. Failures

  2038. He

  2039. Wants

  2040. Us

  2041. To

  2042. See

  2043. More

  2044. Clearly

  2045. His

  2046. Enduring

  2047. Love

  2048. For

  2049. Us

  2050. He

  2051. He

  2052. He

  2053. He

  2054. He

  2055. He

  2056. Won't

  2057. Give

  2058. Up

  2059. On

  2060. Us

  2061. What

  2062. Does

  2063. It

  2064. Look

  2065. Like

  2066. To

  2067. Love

  2068. One

  2069. Another

  2070. As

  2071. Jesus

  2072. Loved

  2073. Peter

  2074. Sometimes

  2075. It

  2076. Looks

  2077. Like

  2078. Enduring

  2079. In

  2080. Love

  2081. With

  2082. Fellow

  2083. Christians

  2084. Who

  2085. Might

  2086. Seem

  2087. Or

  2088. Might

  2089. Be

  2090. Impulsive

  2091. Hot

  2092. Headed

  2093. Insecure

  2094. Annoying

  2095. Overconfident

  2096. In Their

  2097. Own

  2098. Abilities

  2099. And

  2100. Talk

  2101. Too

  2102. Much

  2103. Peter

  2104. Was

  2105. All

  2106. Of

  2107. Those

  2108. Things

  2109. He

  2110. Would

  2111. Speak

  2112. Before

  2113. He

  2114. Would

  2115. Think

  2116. But

  2117. Jesus

  2118. Chose

  2119. Him

  2120. And

  2121. Endured

  2122. In

  2123. Love

  2124. For

  2125. Him

  2126. So

  2127. That

  2128. One

  2129. Day

  2130. He

  2131. Would

  2132. Become

  2133. A

  2134. Rock

  2135. Which

  2136. Is

  2137. What

  2138. Peter's

  2139. Name

  2140. Means

  2141. You

  2142. Know

  2143. His

  2144. Name

  2145. That

  2146. He

  2147. Was

  2148. Born

  2149. With

  2150. Simon

  2151. And

  2152. Jesus

  2153. Said

  2154. I'm

  2155. Going

  2156. To

  2157. Call

  2158. You

  2159. Peter

  2160. Right

  2161. The

  2162. Most

  2163. Volatile

  2164. Of

  2165. Jesus

  2166. Disciples

  2167. And

  2168. Jesus

  2169. Says

  2170. I'm

  2171. Going

  2172. To

  2173. Make

  2174. You

  2175. Into

  2176. A

  2177. Rock

  2178. I'm

  2179. Going

  2180. To

  2181. Make

  2182. You

  2183. Something

  2184. That

  2185. You

  2186. Were

  2187. Not

  2188. All

  2189. On

  2190. Your

  2191. You

  2192. That

  2193. You

  2194. Could

  2195. Not

  2196. Have

  2197. Become

  2198. On

  2199. Your

  2200. Own

  2201. But

  2202. In

  2203. Fellowship

  2204. With

  2205. Me

  2206. By

  2207. Walking

  2208. On

  2209. The

  2210. Journey

  2211. With

  2212. Me

  2213. I'm

  2214. Going

  2215. To

  2216. Make

  2217. You

  2218. Into

  2219. What

  2220. I

  2221. I've

  2222. Already

  2223. Called

  2224. You

  2225. Later

  2226. On

  2227. Peter

  2228. Would

  2229. Write

  2230. This

  2231. Love

  2232. One

  2233. Another

  2234. Earnestly

  2235. From

  2236. A

  2237. Pure

  2238. Heart

  2239. Since

  2240. You've

  2241. Been

  2242. Born

  2243. Again

  2244. Through

  2245. The

  2246. Living

  2247. And

  2248. Abiding

  2249. Word

  2250. Of

  2251. God

  2252. He

  2253. Would

  2254. Write

  2255. Have

  2256. Unity

  2257. Of

  2258. Mind

  2259. Sympathy

  2260. Brotherly

  2261. Love

  2262. A

  2263. Tender

  2264. Heart

  2265. And

  2266. A

  2267. Humble

  2268. Mind

  2269. And

  2270. Above

  2271. All

  2272. Keep

  2273. Loving

  2274. One

  2275. Another

  2276. Earnestly

  2277. Three

  2278. Times

  2279. He

  2280. Comes

  2281. Back

  2282. To

  2283. That

  2284. Refrain

  2285. To

  2286. Love

  2287. One

  2288. Another

  2289. In

  2290. His

  2291. You see

  2292. Peter

  2293. Had

  2294. Received

  2295. That

  2296. Enduring

  2297. Love

  2298. Of

  2299. Jesus

  2300. For

  2301. Him

  2302. And

  2303. So

  2304. He

  2305. Could

  2306. Call

  2307. His

  2308. People

  2309. To

  2310. Express

  2311. That

  2312. To

  2313. One

  2314. Another

  2315. Consider

  2316. The

  2317. Glory

  2318. Of

  2319. Jesus

  2320. Love

  2321. How

  2322. Deep

  2323. It

  2324. Is

  2325. How

  2326. Patient

  2327. And

  2328. Wise

  2329. It

  2330. Is

  2331. How

  2332. Enduring

  2333. And

  2334. Gracious

  2335. It

  2336. Is

  2337. Let's

  2338. Pray

  2339. Lord

  2340. Jesus

  2341. We

  2342. Thank

  2343. You

  2344. That

  2345. You

  2346. Did

  2347. Not

  2348. Just

  2349. Give

  2350. Us

  2351. A

  2352. Command

  2353. To

  2354. Love

  2355. One

  2356. Another

  2357. As

  2358. We

  2359. Think

  2360. Best

  2361. We

  2362. Thank

  2363. You

  2364. That

  2365. You

  2366. Did

  2367. Not

  2368. Just

  2369. Tell

  2370. Us

  2371. How

  2372. You

  2373. Wanted

  2374. Us

  2375. To

  2376. Love

  2377. One

  2378. Another

  2379. But

  2380. You

  2381. Showed

  2382. Us

  2383. We

  2384. Thank

  2385. You

  2386. For

  2387. How

  2388. We

  2389. Have

  2390. Experienced

  2391. That

  2392. Same

  2393. Love

  2394. That

  2395. You

  2396. Extended

  2397. To

  2398. John

  2399. And

  2400. Even

  2401. To

  2402. Judas

  2403. And

  2404. Even

  2405. To

  2406. Peter

  2407. Your

  2408. Deep

  2409. And

  2410. Patient

  2411. And

  2412. Enduring

  2413. Love

  2414. Lord

  2415. We

  2416. Pray

  2417. That

  2418. We

  2419. Would

  2420. Receive

  2421. Your

  2422. Love

  2423. That

  2424. We

  2425. Would

  2426. See

  2427. The

  2428. Way

  2429. That

  2430. Your

  2431. Love

  2432. Has

  2433. Been

  2434. At

  2435. Work

  2436. In

  2437. Our

  2438. Lives

  2439. That

  2440. We

  2441. Would

  2442. Be

  2443. Amazed

  2444. That

  2445. We

  2446. Like

  2447. John

  2448. Would

  2449. Would

  2450. Find

  2451. Our

  2452. Deepest

  2453. Identity

  2454. In

  2455. Being

  2456. Your

  2457. Beloved

  2458. And

  2459. Lord

  2460. We

  2461. Pray

  2462. That

  2463. By

  2464. Your

  2465. Spirit

  2466. You

  2467. Would

  2468. Help

  2469. Us

  2470. To

  2471. Love

  2472. One

  2473. Another

  2474. As

  2475. You

  2476. Have

  2477. Loved

  2478. Us

  2479. So

  2480. That

  2481. The

  2482. World

  2483. Might

  2484. See

  2485. That

  2486. We

  2487. Belong

  2488. To

  2489. You

  2490. So

  2491. The

  2492. World

  2493. Might

  2494. See

  2495. Who

  2496. You

  2497. Are

  2498. Our

  2499. Loving

  2500. And

  2501. Merciful

  2502. Savior

  2503. We

  2504. Pray

  2505. This

  2506. In

  2507. Jesus

  2508. Name

  2509. Amen

  2510. So

  2511. This

  2512. Morning

  2513. We

  2514. Have

  2515. Three

  2516. People

  2517. Who

  2518. Are

  2519. Being

  2520. Baptized

  2521. And

  2522. Coming

  2523. Into

  2524. Membership

  2525. At

  2526. Trinity

  2527. Being

  2528. Baptized

  2529. As

  2530. A

  2531. Christian

  2532. Is

  2533. An

  2534. Acknowledgement

  2535. Of

  2536. Jesus

  2537. Authority

  2538. Jesus

  2539. Commanded

  2540. His

  2541. Followers

  2542. To

  2543. Be

  2544. Baptized

  2545. And

  2546. Doing

  2547. So

  2548. Is

  2549. Taking

  2550. A

  2551. Public

  2552. Promise

  2553. Of

  2554. Allegiance

  2555. To

  2556. Jesus

  2557. Being

  2558. Baptized

  2559. Is

  2560. Also

  2561. An

  2562. Expression

  2563. Not

  2564. Only

  2565. Of

  2566. Commitment

  2567. To

  2568. Jesus

  2569. But

  2570. Also

  2571. Trust

  2572. In

  2573. Him

  2574. Trust

  2575. In

  2576. His

  2577. Love

  2578. It's

  2579. All

  2580. These

  2581. People

  2582. Who

  2583. Are

  2584. Being

  2585. Baptized

  2586. Today

  2587. Have

  2588. Already

  2589. Put

  2590. Their

  2591. Faith

  2592. And

  2593. Trust

  2594. In

  2595. Jesus

  2596. And

  2597. Today

  2598. By

  2599. Being

  2600. Baptized

  2601. They're

  2602. Publicly

  2603. Declaring

  2604. What

  2605. God

  2606. Has

  2607. Already

  2608. Done

  2609. In

  2610. Their

  2611. Hearts

  2612. So

  2613. If

  2614. You've

  2615. Already

  2616. Been

  2617. Baptized

  2618. Consider

  2619. This

  2620. To

  2621. Be

  2622. A

  2623. Reminder

  2624. Of

  2625. Your

  2626. Baptism

  2627. Of

  2628. God's

  2629. Promises

  2630. To

  2631. You

  2632. And

  2633. Of

  2634. Yours

  2635. To

  2636. Him

  2637. If

  2638. You

  2639. Haven't

  2640. Been

  2641. Baptized

  2642. Consider

  2643. This

  2644. An

  2645. Invitation

  2646. First

  2647. To

  2648. Him

  2649. As

  2650. Savior

  2651. And

  2652. Lord

  2653. And

  2654. Second

  2655. To

  2656. Be

  2657. Baptized

  2658. As

  2659. An

  2660. Expression

  2661. Of

  2662. Your

  2663. Faith

  2664. And

  2665. Trust

  2666. In

  2667. Him

  2668. So

  2669. Tyson

  2670. And

  2671. Michelle

  2672. And

  2673. Spondent

  2674. If

  2675. You

  2676. Would

  2677. Come

  2678. To

  2679. The

  2680. Front

  2681. At

  2682. This

  2683. Time

  2684. Each

  2685. Of

  2686. These

  2687. Has

  2688. Met

  2689. With

  2690. The

  2691. Elders

  2692. And

  2693. We've

  2694. Walked

  2695. With

  2696. Them

  2697. Through

  2698. A

  2699. Process

  2700. Of

  2701. Preparing

  2702. For

  2703. This

  2704. Day

  2705. For

  2706. People

  2707. Who

  2708. Are

  2709. Being

  2710. Baptized

  2711. We

  2712. Give

  2713. Them

  2714. An

  2715. Opportunity

  2716. To

  2717. Public

  2718. Give

  2719. Thanks

  2720. To

  2721. God

  2722. In

  2723. Their

  2724. Own

  2725. Words

  2726. Either

  2727. By

  2728. Writing

  2729. Out

  2730. A

  2731. Testimony

  2732. Or

  2733. By

  2734. Presenting

  2735. One

  2736. Verbally

  2737. So

  2738. You

  2739. Can

  2740. Come

  2741. Right

  2742. Up

  2743. Here

  2744. And

  2745. Just

  2746. Take

  2747. A seat

  2748. In

  2749. One

  2750. Of

  2751. These

  2752. Seats

  2753. So

  2754. Tyson

  2755. And

  2756. Michelle

  2757. Have

  2758. Written

  2759. Out

  2760. Their

  2761. Testimonies

  2762. Those

  2763. Will

  2764. Be

  2765. Sent

  2766. Out

  2767. To

  2768. The

  2769. Church

  2770. Email

  2771. List

  2772. But

  2773. I'm

  2774. Just

  2775. Going

  2776. To

  2777. Read

  2778. A

  2779. Couple

  2780. Excerpts

  2781. From

  2782. Each

  2783. Of

  2784. Their

  2785. Testimonies

  2786. And

  2787. Then

  2788. I'll

  2789. Invite

  2790. Spondent

  2791. Who

  2792. Will

  2793. Share

  2794. His

  2795. Testimony

  2796. Verbally

  2797. So

  2798. Michelle

  2799. Here's

  2800. A

  2801. Little

  2802. Bit

  2803. Of

  2804. What

  2805. Michelle

  2806. Wrote

  2807. Michelle

  2808. Says

  2809. I

  2810. Was

  2811. Born

  2812. In

  2813. Bristol

  2814. Connecticut

  2815. I

  2816. First

  2817. Heard

  2818. About

  2819. God

  2820. And

  2821. Jesus

  2822. Through

  2823. My

  2824. Great

  2825. Grandma

  2826. Selina

  2827. Who

  2828. Brought

  2829. Me

2961. the people I met there talked about how they were innocent and were in jail unjustly, but I knew I

2962. had messed up. I went to the church services, but kept my distance from the Christians who sponsored

2963. them, and after I got out of prison, I lived at Columbus House, where I met Michelle, and we

2964. decided to get married. I came to Trinity Baptist, and it solidified the truth that I could be

2965. forgiven of my sins through Jesus. I've seen answers to prayer and seen God at work in my life.

2966. Michelle and I have our own apartment now. Jesus has given me life, and each of their favorite

2967. Bible verses is John 3, 16. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever

2968. believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Amen. Now let me invite Spandan to come and

2969. read your testimony. Thank you, Pastor Greg. Hi, I am Spandan. Some of you know me as Dan.

2970. I come from Calcutta, the same city as Mother Teresa, about whom Pastor Matt spoke a few weeks

2971. back. I was born in a Hindu family, not a Christian, but God had other plans. A bit about myself.

2972. I have been a consultant. I have sold my startup. I've worked in private equity, one of the most

2973. difficult fields of finance. I've got two MBAs, first from the Harvard of India and second from Yale,

2974. and they may have been featured on the Indian equivalent of Forbes 30 under 30. But this is not a tale of

2975. who I am. This is a tale of who Jesus is and how he saved me. I came from India about two and a half years

2976. back for the School of Management. It was a scorching summer noon. Unfortunately, my flight was delayed,

2977. and after 20 hours of not having had a single drop of water, I was dehydrated and jet lagged.

2978. By the time I had reached Prospect Hill, I would have collapsed of thirst. There was not a single shop

2979. in sight where I can get water, nor was there anyone else. I was about to faint. Suddenly,

2980. out of nowhere, came a landscaper. He did not give me water. No. Instead, he gave me iced tea.

2981. And he spoke of Jesus. I did not realize the calling that day. So I tried to teach him about my Hindu

2982. studies. He smiled and left. But Jesus did not give up on me. I graduated from SOM in May 2019,

2983. near the top of my class, and absolutely jobless. We, as international students, have only one year

2984. of OPT, and most people don't want to give us jobs for that one year. What's going to happen after that?

2985. May got into June, June to July. I did find something to survive, but it was really, really bad.

2986. I asked my mom to pray for me, desperately. Pray for me, pray for me, pray for me, and she started

2987. going to temples. Nothing happened. One day, on a train in India, thousands of kilometers from the U.S.,

2988. she heard about Jesus. The same week, by coincidence, or by divine prophecy, I met an Uber driver on my way

2989. back from Elm City Market. He happened to be a pastor who had a small church in Bridgeport. He told me

2990. about Christ and asked me to embrace him. I started reading the Bible, but I did not understand what

2991. Christ truly meant. I did not believe in him. I was yet to know what Christ can do. You know,

2992. there's a difference between knowing God and surrendering everything to him. My heart was not ready.

2993. My story was not over there. In the next few months, everything would go dark. I started a business.

2994. It failed. I applied to thousands of jobs. Got rejected because I didn't have a visa.

2995. Had no money left. Most of my friends left, so I had no one to talk to. It was solitary confinement.

2996. I forgot to laugh. I cried every day. My morning started with despair, and my nights ended in depression.

2997. And then, COVID started. In hindsight, I did two things wrong. First, I was praying both to my Hindu deities

2998. and Jesus at the same time. Doesn't work that way. And the second, I used to wear an amulet of precious

2999. stones. It had gold, diamond, a lot of things. It was meant to appease my Hindu deities, and it was

3000. actually preventing Jesus from coming to me. So finally, last May 2020, after one year, and when the

3001. last date of visa application was over, I finally got rejected from a big firm, not even in the U.S.

3002. I would have gladly left. And that rejection was the last hit that I could take. How many rejections

3003. can a man take any day? So that day, I took off my amulet, and I prayed to God and to Jesus, and I said,

3004. today I have nothing. If you can, save me. If not, this is the end. And so I prayed for my own death.

3005. Nothing is impossible with prayer and fasting. And I'm not proud of what I did. But the very next

3006. afternoon, Jesus came and visited me in my dream. There were two dreams. In the first dream, there was a

3007. huge battle on earth. There were giant monsters who were trying to kill men, and they were swatting them

3008. like flies. I still volunteered, too cocky or too brave. But when I tried to fight him, I did not know

3009. what happened to the monster, but I fell. And I saw myself dying there in a ditch, covered with mud and

3010. blood and grime, and I slowly sank into it. I thought, one more bad dream. Okay, fine.

3011. In the next one, Christ visited me. It was a place on earth where the souls of the dead

3012. leave. There was a huge canopy, and on top of that, this brilliant white light. I have never seen

3013. something that bright ever in my life. And below them, there were the souls of the dead. There was a

3014. trap door at the end of it, and there was a ball of light who operated it. It went up and down with

3015. the soul when they got onto it. I could not walk anymore because I did not have a body, so I just

3016. moved with the others. I floated there, and then I saw him, the Lord of Light. He was helping the souls

3017. get into that divine white light. When my time came, I got onto that trap door, and I said, Jesus,

3018. take me with you. He just smiled. He just smiled. He did not take me with him. He sent me back,

3019. gave me a new body, and I realized one thing. My time on this earth was not over. He resurrected me.

3020. So I lost everything, everything that I had, but instead, I found Christ. In those days, only my mom

3021. was my only support. I had doubts for God. I had doubts for Christ, but she said one thing. Do not

3022. say a single negative thing about Christ, about my Christ. I do not know where she got her strength

3023. from, but I thank the Holy Spirit for it. Today, I work in venture capital. One of the hardest industries

3024. to break into, even if you are an American or you have an MBA, not as an associate, but as a manager.

3025. But the greatest blessing that I have received is knowing Christ. I am not special. I am not special

3026. at all. Christ comes for everyone. He is the Son of God. He loves us the most. All we have to do

3027. is just love him back. Sometimes, everything might seem lost, but Jesus always finds a way. And when he

3028. lifts you, it's not a small step up. You will rise. It's a liftoff. So here I am, walking in his path,

3029. in his light. And today, I jump onto his arms. And when my time is up, I will meet him again.

3030. And this time, I will go through that trapdoor again, into the brilliant light with Jesus.

3031. In Jesus' mighty name I pray. Amen.

  3032. Amen.

  3033. Amen.

  3034. Amen.

3035. No, no, stay here. So let me ask, thank you for sharing. Let me ask Spondin and Michelle and Tyson

3036. three questions that we ask everyone who is being baptized and joining the Church of Trinity.

3037. Tyson and Michelle and Spondin, do you affirm your faith in Jesus Christ as your and the only

3038. Lord and Savior? And do you commit to serve Christ and the fellowship of his Church for the rest of

3039. your life? And do you commit yourself to Trinity Baptist Church to be members and to give and receive

3040. love and service? For those of us who are members, do we as members commit to love and serve Tyson,

3041. Michelle, and Spondin, even as we receive their love and service among us? If so, say, we will.

  3042. All right, let's pray.

3043. Our Father, we thank you for reaching out in your love to Tyson, Michelle, and Spondin.

3044. We thank you for sending your Son to be their Savior. We thank you for sending your Spirit to

3045. dwell in them as their comforter and advocate. We pray for each of them as they are baptized today.

3046. Assure them of your fatherly love for them. Remind them that in Christ they are a new creation.

3047. Fill them with your Spirit that they might become more and more like Christ and be equipped to do

3048. the good works that you have prepared for them to do. We pray that they may always remember this day

3049. as a sign and a seal of your saving grace in their lives. Preserve them through every temptation and

3050. trial that they will face in the future so that they may always remain in fellowship with you for

3051. the rest of their life and for all eternity. In Jesus' name, amen. We're going to stand and sing

3052. as they go to get changed and as we prepare for the baptism. So please stand as we sing.

  3053. Amen.

3059. There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel's veins.

3060. And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.

3061. Lose all their guilty stains.

3062. Lose all their guilty stains.

3063. And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.

3064. The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day.

3065. And there may I, though vile as he, wash all my sins away.

3066. Wash all my sins away.

3067. Wash all my sins away.

3068. And there may I, though vile as he, wash all my sins away.

3146. raining. So as usual, the ushers will dismiss you and you can feel free to fellowship with one
