  1. Good morning, church. Happy Mother's Day. Would you turn with me to John chapter 14,

    John 14:8–14

  2. verses 8 through 14. We are continuing our series in Jesus's farewell discourse in John chapters 13

    John 13 chapter mention

  3. through 17. This is the moment in Jesus's earthly ministry in the upper room when he prepares his

  4. disciples for his impending departure by way of the cross and resurrection, but he also prepares

  5. his disciples for their upcoming mission by way of the Holy Spirit. So last week we heard Jesus speak

  6. words of comfort to the disciples and to us, that he's going to prepare a way for us, that he's the

  7. only way to the Father. So let's pick up where we left off in John chapter 14, verses 8 through 14.

    John 14:8–14

  8. But before we read, let me pray for us. Let me pray. Our Father in heaven, we ask that

  9. as we come to your word this morning, you would give us ears to hear what your spirit is saying,

  10. and you would give us hearts to receive with faith what it is you have for us.

  11. God, thank you for doing a transformative work in us and through us as you speak to us.

  12. We pray this in Jesus's name. Amen. All right. John chapter 14, verses 8 through 14.

    John 14:8–14

  13. Philip said to Jesus, Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us. Jesus said to him,

  14. have I been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the

  15. Father. How can you say, show us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the

  16. Father is in me? The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who

  17. dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else

  18. believe on account of the works themselves. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me

  19. will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do because I am going to the

  20. Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  21. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

  22. Well, I wonder if you've ever felt like something is missing, like you're just not connecting the

  23. dots. You watch the movie that all your friends are raving about, and you just don't get it. You

  24. think, what am I missing here? Or you're putting together a piece of Ikea furniture, trying for the

  25. second or third time, and the thing just doesn't look right. What am I missing here?

  26. I think as followers of Jesus, we can sometimes feel similarly about our spiritual lives.

  27. We can feel like we're missing something, right? For example, Paul says in Romans,

  28. the kingdom of God is all about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. And sometimes we think,

  29. I don't really feel any of that. What am I missing?

  30. When Philip asks Jesus in our passage, Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us,

  31. don't you hear Philip kind of feeling the same way? Jesus, what am I missing? Just show us the Father,

  32. and that'll be enough for us. Now, you have to admire Philip's desire here, right? It's like Moses in

  33. Exodus, when Moses says to the Lord, Lord, show me your glory. After all, to see God, to catch a glimpse

  34. of his brilliance and beauty, that would truly be enough for us. That would satisfy the soul for a

  35. thousand lifetimes. That would thrill even the most cynical heart to see God.

  36. But what are we missing? Why are we so often dissatisfied in our walk with God? Why are we so often

  37. bored? What are we missing? Like Philip, we ask, Lord, just show us the Father, and that'll be enough

  38. for us. And in our short passage, Jesus is going to help us connect the dots. He's going to show us

  39. that a soul-satisfying relationship with God can be had, but too often we overlook something

  40. important. Too often we're trying to build a stool with only one or two legs, and then we wonder why it

  41. can never stay up. We wonder why it always falls flat. Instead, Jesus shows us that a soul-satisfying

  42. relationship with God involves the dynamic interplay of three critical things—believing,

  43. doing, and praying. It's about a kind of believing that gives birth to doing,

  44. and a kind of doing that gives birth to praying, and a kind of praying that comes back again to

  45. believing. So let's look at each of these three and find out maybe what we've been missing. So first,

  46. a soul-satisfying relationship with God means believing. But what kind of believing? Believing

  47. that in Jesus we have all we've ever longed for. Look again at verses 9 through 11. Like Philip,

  48. we want to see the Father. We want to see God. It's almost like we're estranged lovers longing to

  49. meet our beloved again. We're like exiles longing to see our homeland. I mean, if you've ever been in

  50. a situation where you've been far from home for a long time, doesn't it feel like it would just be

  51. enough to kind of crest the hill and see home once again? To know that you are at last where you

  52. belong. And isn't so much of our life a search to find lasting satisfaction and meaning? Isn't that

  53. so much of what we long for in life? And isn't so much of our life a search for those things

  54. that often comes up short? That life isn't enough. You know, we get the degree, we get the job,

  55. we get the relationship, we buy the home, but it doesn't do the trick.

  56. Reflecting on this reality, C.S. Lewis once said,

  57. if I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy,

  58. the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

  59. If none of my earthly pleasures, he goes on to say, if none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it,

  60. that does not prove the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to

  61. satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, he says, I must take

  62. care on the one hand never to despise or be unthankful for these earthly blessings, and on the

  63. other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a copy or echo or mirage.

  64. He concludes, I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country.

  65. And so, like Philip, we say, Lord, show us the Father, and that'll be enough for us.

  66. But now consider, consider what Philip's question implies in this moment. Philip and the other

  67. apostles, the other disciples, have been with Jesus now for three years. Philip has heard Jesus teach,

  68. seen Jesus work wonders. In chapter 13, right before this chapter, Jesus has just washed Philip's feet

  69. and served him the meal that will become the sign of the fulfillment of all of Israel's hopes of

  70. redemption. And yet, Philip still thinks that he needs something more to see the Father.

  71. But listen to what Jesus says in verse 9 to Philip, to all of us.

  72. Let that sink in. There is nothing in addition to Jesus that we need to see the Father.

  73. There's no surplus of God somewhere else that we might need to discover or find out. There's no sort

  74. of advanced course or higher degree that we might take. Soul-satisfying Christianity is not Jesus plus

  75. something else. In fact, the very reason why our faith becomes so dull is because we think we have

  76. to keep looking somewhere else. It's like we're in the dressing room and we keep trying on clothes

  77. after clothes. Maybe the next outfit will be just the right fit. Maybe the next outfit.

  78. When there's a perfectly tailored dress waiting for us right there. There it is. Put it on.

  79. But how can that be? How is it that Jesus alone is enough?

  80. Look at the next verse, verse 10. Jesus says,

  81. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

  82. Now this is what we've come to call the mutual indwelling of God the Father and God the Son.

  83. The Father is in the Son. The Son is in the Father. You see, Jesus isn't merely a prophet or a religious

  84. leader who comes with a word from God. No, Jesus is the very word of God. When God the Father speaks,

  85. the very word he says is Jesus, the Son. So to think that we can find more of God somewhere else

  86. is impossible.

  87. Imagine you visit a friend you haven't seen for ages. You fly across the country to visit them.

  88. You show up at their door. They open the door and then the friend says,

  89. Well, it's great that you're here and all, but you know, I'm going to head down to the library

  90. and see if anyone has written any biographies about you. Maybe search the internet and see

  91. what I can find. I'm so eager to get to know you better after all these years that we've been apart.

  92. And you think to yourself,

  93. I'm here. I'm right in front of you. I'm in the flesh. It doesn't get better than this.

  94. It's impossible to find more of me somewhere else.

  95. And that's what Jesus is saying to each one of us.

  96. I'm standing right in front of you.

  97. God in the flesh. It doesn't get better. It doesn't get more personal.

  98. It doesn't get more self-revealing than this.

  99. But why should we believe that the Father is in Jesus, the Son,

  100. and Jesus, the Son, is in the Father?

  101. Look at verse 11.

  102. Believe me, Jesus says, or else believe on account of the works.

  103. In other words, we can either take Jesus' own word for it,

  104. or we can believe because of the powerful works that Jesus has done.

  105. So on the one hand, we can take Jesus' own word for it.

  106. And consider, that is no light thing.

  107. Did anyone ever teach like Jesus?

  108. Did anyone leave a greater impact on human history?

  109. You know, many people will say that they revere Jesus as a great teacher

  110. or a great spiritual guide.

  111. Some will even say perhaps he was the greatest teacher,

  112. the greatest spiritual guide who ever lived.

  113. Well, friends, if you believe that,

  114. or if you're at least willing to entertain that thought,

  115. then consider what Jesus says about his own relationship to the Father.

  116. If you believe that he's a great teacher, and he is,

  117. then believe what he actually says about himself, perhaps.

  118. But on the other hand, you can believe on account of what Jesus has done.

  119. During Jesus' lifetime, we have records of people saying things like this,

  120. when the Messiah comes, will he do more works than these?

  121. Nearly every historical record we have of the life of Jesus

  122. presents him as a worker of mighty signs and wonders.

  123. In John's gospel, we find Jesus doing things like turning water into wine

  124. or feeding 5,000 people with just a few fish and loaves of bread,

  125. even raising the dead back to life.

  126. All of these works are meant to tell us something about who Jesus is,

  127. about his identity.

  128. They are nonverbal, Christological signposts.

  129. In other words, they're Jesus showing us who he is,

  130. not merely telling us.

  131. But as we think about the works of Jesus,

  132. think about the greatest work of all.

  133. Consider that the one who turned water into wine

  134. and fed the multitudes and calmed the seas and raised the dead,

  135. consider that at the end of his life,

  136. he was willing to stand in the place of his enemies

  137. and to be stripped of all his dignity and honor

  138. and to be crucified

  139. and to go down into death itself.

  140. Consider that he was willing

  141. to give his life as a ransom for many,

  142. to pay the infinite debt of sin

  143. that we owed to an infinitely holy God

  144. with the infinitely priceless blood of his own perfect life.

  145. Has anyone ever done a work like that?

  146. Died for our sins willingly, lovingly?

  147. And so, friends, as we apply this to our own hearts,

  148. we have to ask, we have to ask ourselves,

  149. where do I tend to look to find ultimate spiritual answers?

  150. Where do I tend to go to find ultimate spiritual satisfaction for my soul

  151. other than Jesus,

  152. other than the crucified and risen Lord?

  153. If we are trying to see the face of the Father,

  154. of our Creator, of the one who made us and loves us,

  155. Jesus says we have to look into the face of the Son,

  156. of his own self.

  157. In other words, our pursuit of God

  158. must be ruthlessly, radically Christ-centered,

  159. or it will leave us empty, tired, and bored.

  160. So first, what Jesus says then is

  161. soul-satisfying Christianity means believing,

  162. believing that in Jesus we have all we've ever longed for.

  163. But let's pause a minute and ask,

  164. let me ask you, Christian,

  165. is that your experience?

  166. Having seen the Father in the face of Jesus,

  167. are you satisfied?

  168. Most of us, I think at times,

  169. have to honestly answer,

  170. no.

  171. We know Jesus is all in all,

  172. but why doesn't it feel like it's enough?

  173. Well, it could be that we aren't really pressing into the person of Jesus

  174. through the means of grace,

  175. through spiritual rhythms like Christ-centered prayer,

  176. or scripture meditation, or worship, and so on.

  177. Or perhaps it doesn't feel like enough because we're just feeling the reality

  178. that our consummation is still to come.

  179. You know, John says in his first epistle that the day is coming when we shall be like him,

  180. for we shall see him as he is.

  181. We are still awaiting the bridegroom's return for his bride.

  182. But still, there's another very important reason why Jesus can sometimes feel like he's not enough.

  183. And this, perhaps, is more widespread among us than we realize.

  184. And it comes from a faulty understanding of what the Christian life actually means.

  185. We operate with a truncated vision of what God actually has for us in this life.

  186. You see, the Christian story is not

  187. believe in Jesus and then wait around

  188. until you go to heaven when you die.

  189. Now, don't get me wrong.

  190. The hope of heaven is precious and sweet.

  191. It is food when we are hungry.

  192. It is drink when we are weary.

  193. It is joy in our sadness.

  194. It is courage in our weakness.

  195. But, as we set our sights on the new heavens and the new earth to come,

  196. right now, there is a mission.

  197. There is a purpose, a calling that Jesus has for us.

  198. Consider, when Jesus was here, he healed the sick.

  199. He blessed the poor.

  200. He challenged empty religion.

  201. Andrew, I'm going to switch over the pulpit mic.

  202. Is that all right?

  203. This thing keeps falling off.

  204. I'm going to just get rid of it.

  205. Consider, friends, that when Jesus was here,

  206. what did he do?

  207. He healed the sick.

  208. He blessed the poor.

  209. He challenged empty religion.

  210. He calmed seas.

  211. He raised the dead.

  212. Now, why was he doing all of that?

  213. On the one hand, as we just said,

  214. the miracles of Christ were demonstrations of his identity.

  215. Yes.

  216. But they were also something more.

  217. The works that Christ did, they were creation healing works.

  218. What I mean is the miracles of Christ were not merely displays of power or wonder.

  219. They were things that put creation back into the wholeness that God intended.

  220. So, I took my car to the shop this past week.

  221. Now, imagine I had taken my car to the shop,

  222. and the mechanic somehow magically turned my Honda CR-V into an apple pie.

  223. That would have been quite a display of wonder and power.

  224. But it would have been a little pointless, right?

  225. Tasty, but pointless.

  226. But if the mechanic actually fixed the car,

  227. when no one else could fix it,

  228. if he restored it to its proper and intended use,

  229. isn't that much more important?

  230. And isn't that much more satisfying?

  231. You see, the miracles of Christ are signs that the creator has come back into his creation

  232. to make things right.

  233. Jesus turned water into wine

  234. because God originally created us,

  235. not for sorrow, but for joy.

  236. Jesus fed the 5,000

  237. because God originally intended us

  238. to flourish and enjoy his good gifts

  239. and not to be hungry and starve.

  240. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead

  241. because we were made not for death,

  242. but for life.

  243. In short, Jesus came to inaugurate the kingdom of God,

  244. the world-healing reign of the creator

  245. to drive back death and sin and hell from God's good creation

  246. and to begin the work of restoration, of new creation.

  247. And here is what we so often miss.

  248. Here's why our walk with God doesn't satisfy the soul.

  249. Too often we miss the fact that believing,

  250. being united to the person of Christ,

  251. too often we miss that being united to the person of Christ

  252. means being united to the mission of Christ.

  253. Let's read verse 12.

  254. Jesus says,

  255. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  256. whoever believes in me

  257. will also do the works that I do

  258. and greater works than these will he do

  259. because I'm going to the Father.

  260. Soul-satisfying Christianity

  261. means believing first and foremost,

  262. believing that Jesus is all we need.

  263. But this believing gives birth to doing.

  264. But what kind of doing?

  265. Doing the very kingdom works of our exalted King Jesus.

  266. Now let's break down verse 12.

  267. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  268. 25 times in John's Gospel Jesus says this.

  269. This is Jesus' way of saying,

  270. Listen up.

  271. This is the truth that you need to hear.

  272. I'm putting my whole divine authority

  273. behind what I'm about to say.

  274. Whoever believes in me.

  275. Whoever.

  276. Notice, Jesus isn't just talking about a select few, right?

  277. He's not just talking about the master chefs.

  278. He's talking about everyone in the kitchen, right?

  279. Whoever believes in me

  280. will do the works that I do.

  281. Believing in Jesus results in a life of mission,

  282. of deep and lasting purpose.

  283. You, Christian,

  284. have a calling and a responsibility.

  285. Your life isn't meant to be lived simply to amass wealth

  286. or personal success or personal comfort.

  287. You're called to do the very works of Jesus.

  288. Works of creation, healing, kingdom, exhibiting power.

  289. This is how Jesus defined his mission in Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  290. Quoting from the prophet Isaiah,

  291. Jesus said,

  292. As you look out at your world,

  293. friends,

  294. your family,

  295. your neighborhood,

  296. your school,

  297. your city,

  298. what do you see?

  299. If you're looking with the eyes of Jesus,

  300. you see men and women

  301. all made in the image of God,

  302. full of dignity and worth and beauty.

  303. But you see them suffering mightily

  304. under the weight of sin.

  305. Spiritually and materially poor.

  306. Spiritually and materially captive.

  307. Spiritually and materially blind.

  308. Spiritually and materially oppressed.

  309. And being united to Jesus by faith,

  310. we are called to go

  311. and proclaim liberty to the captives.

  312. To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  313. To use all the gifts that God has given us

  314. to love our neighbors as ourselves

  315. and to serve rather than to be served.

  316. We enter into the mission of Jesus.

  317. You will do the works that I do.

  318. And then Jesus says,

  319. And greater works than these will you do.

  320. Now you can imagine the apostles

  321. starting to scratch their heads at that point, right?

  322. You have to ask,

  323. Okay, well greater in what sense, Jesus?

  324. Does Jesus mean greater in number?

  325. Like quantitatively,

  326. will we just do a greater number of good works?

  327. Well, you have to admit,

  328. that is true, right?

  329. Read the first few chapters,

  330. even just of the book of Acts.

  331. Thousands of believers join the church in one day.

  332. Many people are healed.

  333. The church does go on to do works

  334. greater in number

  335. than those Jesus performed

  336. during his three-year ministry.

  337. That is true.

  338. But,

  339. greater in number

  340. doesn't seem to be the best understanding

  341. of the actual Greek phrase here.

  342. There are other more natural ways

  343. to say greater in number

  344. if that's what Jesus meant.

  345. So,

  346. if Jesus doesn't mean greater in number,

  347. perhaps he means

  348. greater in wonder.

  349. will the church do more wonderful

  350. or miraculous works than Jesus?

  351. Well, we have to admit,

  352. it's kind of hard to imagine

  353. doing more wonderful works

  354. than raising the dead

  355. and calming the seas

  356. and feeding the 5,000.

  357. We do see mighty works

  358. done by the church.

  359. Read the book of Acts.

  360. Read church history.

  361. God does miraculous things

  362. through the church

  363. by his spirit,

  364. even today.

  365. But,

  366. it's hard to say

  367. that these are greater in wonder

  368. than what Jesus has done.

  369. So,

  370. what does it mean

  371. that we're going to do

  372. greater works?

  373. Well,

  374. imagine a baseball player.

  375. It's early in the season.

  376. His team is tied

  377. in the third inning

  378. of some

  379. random game.

  380. He gets to the plate.

  381. Boom!

  382. Hits a home run.

  383. That's a pretty great work,

  384. right?

  385. Now,

  386. fast forward.

  387. His team has made it

  388. all the way to the playoffs.

  389. It's the World Series.

  390. Bottom of the ninth.

  391. Score is tied.

  392. Two outs.

  393. Same player.

  394. Steps to the bat.

  395. Boom!

  396. He hits a home run.

  397. Which one

  398. is the greater work?

  399. Well,

  400. the work itself

  401. was the same,

  402. right?

  403. A ball,

  404. a bat,

  405. hit a ball

  406. and it went over the fence.

  407. But,

  408. obviously,

  409. the second work

  410. was much,

  411. much greater.

  412. Why?

  413. Not because of what,

  414. but because of when.

  415. Brothers and sisters,

  416. do you know

  417. what time it is?

  418. Not clock time,

  419. not chronological time.

  420. Some of you are thinking,

  421. maybe it's time to start

  422. wrapping this sermon up.

  423. We've been sitting here

  424. for 20 minutes.

  425. No.

  426. What time is it

  427. in God's

  428. plan of redemption?

  429. The time that really matters,

  430. theological time.

  431. When

  432. are we?

  433. Do you remember

  434. in Genesis 3,

  435. after the fall of Adam and Eve,

  436. God said,

  437. a time was coming

  438. when the seed of the woman

  439. would crush the serpent's head.

  440. Do you remember

  441. in Genesis 12,

  442. when God

  443. called Abraham

  444. and God said,

  445. a time was coming,

  446. Abraham,

  447. when I'm going to bless

  448. all nations

  449. and your offspring?

  450. And do you remember

  451. in 2 Samuel chapter 7,

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  452. when God made a covenant

  453. with David,

  454. God said,

  455. a time was coming

  456. when David's throne

  457. would be established

  458. forever.

  459. And then in Joel 2,

  460. when the people

  461. were languishing

  462. under a natural disaster,

  463. under a locust plague,

  464. God said,

  465. a time is coming

  466. when he would pour out

  467. his spirit on all flesh.

  468. In Isaiah 49,

  469. when the people

  470. were suffering in exile,

  471. God said,

  472. a time was coming

  473. when he would not only

  474. bring back

  475. the people of Israel,

  476. but he would make

  477. his servant a light

  478. for the nations

  479. and his salvation

  480. would reach to the ends

  481. of the earth.

  482. A time is coming.

  483. A time is coming.

  484. A time is coming.

  485. Do you know

  486. what time it is?

  487. That time

  488. is now.

  489. Right now.

  490. Theologically speaking,

  491. it is

  492. the World Series.

  493. Every

  494. hit

  495. counts.

  496. God's

  497. kingdom

  498. is unleashed

  499. on the world

  500. and nothing

  501. will stop it.

  502. Why?

  503. Look at verse 12 again.

  504. Jesus says,

  505. we'll do greater works

  506. than he did

  507. during his earthly ministry

  508. because I

  509. am going to the Father,

  510. he says.

  511. because I

  512. am going

  513. to the Father.

  514. Jesus is referring there

  515. to his death

  516. and resurrection

  517. and ascension

  518. to the Father's right hand.

  519. And because

  520. Jesus has died,

  521. risen,

  522. and ascended,

  523. that is the reason

  524. why believers

  525. will do greater works.

  526. Because when Jesus

  527. ascended

  528. to the right hand

  529. of God,

  530. a human king

  531. was at long

  532. last

  533. enthroned

  534. over creation

  535. just like God

  536. promised David.

  537. and the serpent's

  538. head was crushed

  539. by the crucified

  540. one

  541. just like God

  542. had promised Adam

  543. and Eve.

  544. And the spirit

  545. was poured out

  546. just like God

  547. had promised Joel.

  548. And the blessing

  549. of God

  550. was now being

  551. proclaimed

  552. to all nations,

  553. to the ends

  554. of the earth,

  555. just like God

  556. had promised Abraham

  557. and Isaiah.

  558. Friends,

  559. the king

  560. has taken

  561. his seat

  562. and he will reign

  563. until every enemy

  564. is under his feet,

  565. until even death

  566. itself will die.

  567. Heaven and earth

  568. are now united

  569. in King Jesus.

  570. The door of redemptive history

  571. has swung open

  572. and the time

  573. is at hand.

  574. what a wonderful,

  575. humbling,

  576. and awe-inspiring

  577. thing

  578. that the almighty

  579. God of the universe

  580. has chosen

  581. to do

  582. his greater work,

  583. his kingdom-advancing

  584. work,

  585. not apart from us,

  586. but through us.

  587. how much

  588. must Jesus

  589. love

  590. his body,

  591. his bride,

  592. his church?

  593. He defeats

  594. sin and death

  595. on the cross,

  596. he rises to new life

  597. on the third day,

  598. he ascends

  599. to the everlasting throne

  600. of his father

  601. after 40 days

  602. with his disciples,

  603. and then

  604. he chooses

  605. to do

  606. his greater work

  607. of advancing

  608. his kingdom

  609. to the ends

  610. of the earth.

  611. How?

  612. Through us.

  613. does he need us

  614. to do that work?

  615. No!

  616. But he delights

  617. to include us

  618. in that work

  619. to make us

  620. part of his plan

  621. and his purpose

  622. and his mission.

  623. That's why the apostle

  624. Paul says in Acts 13,

  625. in Acts 13,

  626. Paul's preaching

  627. the gospel,

  628. and what happens there

  629. is that Paul

  630. takes a passage

  631. from Isaiah,

  632. actually the same passage

  633. from Isaiah,

  634. Isaiah 49,

  635. that we read earlier,

  636. a passage that is

  637. clearly about Jesus,

  638. and then Paul

  639. applies it

  640. to his own

  641. life and ministry

  642. as an apostle.

  643. This is what Paul says,

  644. For so the Lord

  645. has commanded us,

  646. saying,

  647. I have made you

  648. a light to the Gentiles

  649. that you may bring

  650. salvation to the ends

  651. of the earth.

  652. Now,

  653. is Paul being

  654. presumptuous

  655. when he takes

  656. a passage

  657. that is about Jesus

  658. and applies it

  659. to his own life

  660. and ministry?

  661. No.

  662. He is simply

  663. realizing

  664. what Jesus himself

  665. taught,

  666. that you will do

  667. the works that I do

  668. and even greater

  669. works than these

  670. because I am going

  671. to the Father.

  672. So friends,

  673. where has God

  674. called you

  675. to participate

  676. in this greatest

  677. of works,

  678. in this time

  679. in which we live?

  680. faith.

  681. Listen to what

  682. Jesus has been

  683. saying so far

  684. in this

  685. farewell discourse.

  686. Serve one another.

  687. Love one another.

  688. Look at your

  689. neighbors.

  690. How can you

  691. serve them?

  692. Love them.

  693. Look at your

  694. fellow church members.

  695. How can you

  696. serve them?

  697. Love them.

  698. Ask yourself,

  699. who am I?

  700. Who has God

  701. made me to be?

  702. Where am I?

  703. Where has God

  704. put me right now?

  705. When am I?

  706. Well, we know

  707. the answer

  708. to that one.

  709. You have a part

  710. to play

  711. in the drama

  712. of redemption.

  713. You know,

  714. the Old Testament

  715. saints longed

  716. for this day

  717. and here you are.

  718. Do you want

  719. a faith

  720. that is

  721. soul satisfying?

  722. Then first

  723. and foremost

  724. you must believe

  725. that Jesus

  726. is all you need

  727. and then

  728. you must join

  729. the kingdom work

  730. of your risen Lord.

  731. But Jesus

  732. isn't done yet.

  733. Perhaps,

  734. perhaps you've

  735. heard this

  736. kingdom call.

  737. Perhaps you're

  738. finding your way

  739. in the mission

  740. that Christ

  741. has for you.

  742. And the danger

  743. for you

  744. isn't

  745. boredom.

  746. That's the

  747. unique danger

  748. of believing

  749. without doing.

  750. No,

  751. the danger

  752. for you

  753. is weariness.

  754. You're believing,

  755. yes.

  756. You're doing,

  757. yes.

  758. But your soul

  759. is weary

  760. and drained

  761. and you find

  762. yourself asking,

  763. what am I missing?

  764. is this really

  765. what it's all about?

  766. I feel so thin.

  767. I feel so tired.

  768. What am I missing?

  769. Jesus shows us

  770. in the last two verses

  771. of our text.

  772. So we've seen

  773. that soul-satisfying

  774. Christianity

  775. means believing,

  776. first and foremost,

  777. believing that Jesus

  778. is all we need

  779. and it means doing,

  780. doing the very kingdom

  781. works of our

  782. exalted King Jesus.

  783. But third,

  784. it means

  785. praying.

  786. Praying

  787. with radical

  788. assurance

  789. in Jesus'

  790. name.

  791. Let me read again

  792. verses 13 through 14.

  793. Jesus says,

  794. whatever you ask

  795. in my name,

  796. this I will do,

  797. that the Father

  798. may be glorified

  799. in the Son.

  800. If you ask me

  801. anything in my name,

  802. I will do it.

  803. The English poet

  804. George Herbert,

  805. he once called

  806. prayer

  807. reversed

  808. thunder.

  809. Now think about

  810. that metaphor

  811. for a minute.

  812. How does

  813. thunder

  814. work?

  815. Well,

  816. there's a flash

  817. of blazing light

  818. across the sky,

  819. right?

  820. And then half a second

  821. or maybe a second

  822. later,

  823. boom,

  824. we hear the thunder.

  825. First the light,

  826. then the sound.

  827. But prayer,

  828. prayer

  829. is reversed

  830. thunder.

  831. prayer

  832. is the sound

  833. that brings

  834. the light.

  835. Why don't

  836. we pray?

  837. We don't pray

  838. because I think

  839. we don't really

  840. believe

  841. that prayer

  842. is reversed

  843. thunder.

  844. We don't really

  845. believe that prayer

  846. is the sound

  847. that brings

  848. the light.

  849. We don't

  850. really believe

  851. that God

  852. answers prayer.

  853. prayer.

  854. But listen

  855. to what

  856. Jesus says.

  857. If we ask

  858. anything

  859. in his name,

  860. he'll do it.

  861. Now what does

  862. it mean to ask

  863. in his name?

  864. Well,

  865. two things

  866. I think.

  867. First,

  868. praying in

  869. Jesus'

  870. name means

  871. praying for

  872. things that

  873. are in accord

  874. with who

  875. Jesus is

  876. and all

  877. that he

  878. stands for.

  879. Praying in

  880. Jesus'

  881. name isn't

  882. some magic

  883. code word

  884. that gives

  885. you a brand

  886. new car

  887. because

  888. you're

  889. tired

  890. of

  891. your

  892. old

  893. one,

  894. right?

  895. But

  896. you really

  897. can ask

  898. for anything

  899. in his

  900. name.

  901. If you

  902. need a

  903. different

  904. car

  905. to do

  906. what

  907. Jesus

  908. has

  909. called

  910. you

  911. to do,

  912. to get

  913. to work,

  914. to serve

  915. your family,

  916. to give

  917. people a ride

  918. to church,

  919. then pray

  920. for the

  921. car.

  922. So praying

  923. in Jesus'

  924. name means

  925. praying for

  926. things that

  927. are in

  928. accord

  929. with who

  930. Jesus is

  931. and what

  932. he stands

  933. for.

  934. But praying

  935. in Jesus'

  936. name also

  937. means praying

  938. in deep

  939. recognition

  940. that Jesus

  941. is our

  942. only way

  943. to the

  944. Father.

  945. That Jesus

  946. has made

  947. a way

  948. where there

  949. was no

  950. way.

  951. When our

  952. sins had

  953. cast us

  954. out from

  955. God's

  956. presence,

  957. Jesus came

  958. from heaven,

  959. paid for

  960. our sins,

  961. and returned

  962. to heaven so

  963. that we can

  964. now come

  965. to the

  966. Father on

  967. the basis

  968. of his

  969. perfect

  970. record and

  971. not on

  972. the basis

  973. of our

  974. own

  975. record.

  976. We don't

  977. offer our

  978. prayers to

  979. God because

  980. we deserve

  981. to be

  982. heard,

  983. but because

  984. Jesus deserves

  985. to be

  986. heard,

  987. and because

  988. he's united

  989. us to

  990. himself.

  991. And that's

  992. why prayer

  993. is reverse

  994. thunder,

  995. because we

  996. know that

  997. our

  998. redeemer lives,

  999. and that he

  1000. invites us

  1001. to come,

  1002. and to come

  1003. and ask

  1004. anything in

  1005. his name.

  1006. Because when

  1007. we ask,

  1008. when we

  1009. pray,

  1010. who gets

  1011. the credit?

  1012. Who gets

  1013. the credit?

  1014. What does

  1015. Jesus say?

  1016. Whatever you

  1017. ask in my

  1018. name,

  1019. this I

  1020. will do,

  1021. that the

  1022. Father may

  1023. be glorified

  1024. in the

  1025. Son.

  1026. As we

  1027. embark on

  1028. the mission

  1029. of Christ,

  1030. Jesus wants

  1031. us to ask

  1032. for anything

  1033. we encounter

  1034. along the

  1035. way.

  1036. Ask for

  1037. anything,

  1038. Jesus says.

  1039. Why?

  1040. So that he

  1041. might get the

  1042. glory for

  1043. everything.

  1044. And when

  1045. God is

  1046. praised,

  1047. when God

  1048. is praised

  1049. for being

  1050. the glorious

  1051. and gracious

  1052. and holy

  1053. and kind

  1054. and powerful

  1055. God that he

  1056. is,

  1057. when our

  1058. lives are

  1059. struck by

  1060. his beauty

  1061. and brilliance,

  1062. when they're

  1063. struck in

  1064. such a way

  1065. that they

  1066. only can

  1067. be when

  1068. we are

  1069. praying in

  1070. the midst

  1071. of the

  1072. mission that

  1073. is born

  1074. because of

  1075. our belief

  1076. in Jesus,

  1077. in other

  1078. words,

  1079. when God

  1080. is glorified

  1081. for answered

  1082. prayer and

  1083. kingdom work,

  1084. that is the

  1085. place where

  1086. the soul is

  1087. truly satisfied

  1088. because we

  1089. are seeing

  1090. his glory

  1091. in all of

  1092. its fullness.

  1093. And like

  1094. Philip,

  1095. we can finally

  1096. say it's

  1097. enough.

  1098. At long

  1099. last,

  1100. it's enough.

  1101. God

  1102. will

  1103. ask for

  1104. today

  1105. in Jesus'

  1106. name.

  1107. Maybe it's

  1108. something that

  1109. seems too

  1110. petty,

  1111. too small.

  1112. Surely God

  1113. has bigger

  1114. things to do

  1115. with his

  1116. time than

  1117. answer my

  1118. small prayer.

  1119. And yet

  1120. it's nagging

  1121. on your

  1122. heart and

  1123. hear Jesus

  1124. say,

  1125. just come

  1126. ask for

  1127. anything in

  1128. my name

  1129. and I'll

  1130. do it.

  1131. Maybe for

  1132. you it's

  1133. something that

  1134. seems too

  1135. big,

  1136. too bold,

  1137. and yet it's

  1138. there.

  1139. It's this

  1140. kingdom desire

  1141. that God has

  1142. put in you

  1143. and before you.

  1144. And you think,

  1145. I don't know,

  1146. I don't know,

  1147. it seems too

  1148. unlikely that God

  1149. would do something

  1150. like that.

  1151. Friends,

  1152. you have not

  1153. because you

  1154. ask not.

  1155. but when you

  1156. ask in

  1157. Jesus'

  1158. name,

  1159. then get

  1160. ready for

  1161. the lightning.

  1162. It may

  1163. not come

  1164. right away,

  1165. it may not

  1166. come like

  1167. you expected,

  1168. but it

  1169. will come.

  1170. Let's

  1171. pray.

  1172. Lord

  1173. Jesus,

  1174. thank you

  1175. for revealing

  1176. to us and

  1177. showing us

  1178. what a

  1179. full-orbed

  1180. life with

  1181. you looks

  1182. like.

  1183. Lord,

  1184. help us

  1185. by your

  1186. spirit to

  1187. enter into

  1188. these things,

  1189. to believe

  1190. and to do

  1191. and to pray.

  1192. Lord,

  1193. we take just

  1194. a minute now

  1195. as we sit

  1196. in quiet

  1197. before you

  1198. to pray for

  1199. those things

  1200. in your name

  1201. that are deep

  1202. in our hearts

  1203. O Father,

  1204. glorify

  1205. yourself

  1206. through your

  1207. Son,

  1208. and may we

  1209. have eyes

  1210. to see it

  1211. and be

  1212. satisfied.

  1213. Amen.

  1214. Amen.

  1215. God bless you today.

  1216. We

  1217. need you.

  1218. God bless you.
