  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you all.

  2. Our text today is in John chapter 14. We're going to continue in our series in the book of John.

    John 14 chapter mention

  3. We're starting, we're looking at John 14, starting in verse 15.

  4. This is Jesus' farewell discourse. This is the last week of his life.

  5. He's preparing his disciples for what is coming, which is both the reality of his crucifixion and his resurrection,

  6. but also the mission then that he will leave them with to bear witness to him in the world.

  7. And so we'll see as we look at this passage this morning, Jesus exposes a problem that the disciples may face,

  8. a provision that he is promising, and then we'll look for a few minutes at what that provision will produce in our lives.

  9. So there's my three Ps for you if you want, if you're doing an outline, a problem, a provision, and what is produced by that provision.

  10. So let's look at the passage together, and then we'll pray, and then we will dive in.

  11. John chapter 14, verse 15.

    John 14:15

  12. If you love me, you will keep my commandments, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper to be with you forever,

  13. even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him.

  14. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

  15. I will not leave you as orphans.

  16. I will come to you, yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me.

  17. Because I live, you also will live.

  18. In that day, you will know that I am in the Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

  19. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.

  20. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

  21. Judas, not Iscariot, said to him, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world?

  22. And Jesus answered him, if anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him,

  23. and we will come to him and make our home with him.

  24. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine, but the Father who sent me.

  25. Let's pray together.

  26. Lord, we come this morning to your word, and we ask for your help,

  27. because we know that in our human, natural minds, Lord, we are unable to understand what you are saying to us.

  28. But we praise you that we are not left alone.

  29. Lord, even in this passage, you promised the gift of your Holy Spirit,

  30. Lord, who illumines our hearts and our minds,

  31. and gives us understanding of things that we could not understand otherwise.

  32. And we thank you that your word is not so opaque and not so confusing,

  33. that we cannot understand it with your help,

  34. but in fact that you have revealed yourself so that we might know you,

  35. and in knowing you that we might love you,

  36. and worship you as you deserve.

  37. God, I pray for us this morning as we look at this passage

  38. that you will help us to receive your word.

  39. In Jesus' name, amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. So there's a function in Microsoft Word that I've always wondered about.

  42. You may have seen it.

  43. It's called the widow-orphan function.

  44. Do you know what it does?

  45. It means that when you're writing on a piece of page,

  46. and you have a word that might be the only word at the end of a paragraph,

  47. or the only line at the bottom of the page starting a new paragraph,

  48. word will automatically reformat it for you

  49. so that those lines or those words will not be alone.

  50. They will not be left singular, isolated from the rest of the text,

  51. but that they will be seen as a part of the text,

  52. welcomed and gathered.

  53. Jesus tells his disciples in the verses today,

  54. he says, I will not leave you as orphans.

  55. Now, we know that this is a feeling that maybe many of us have had

  56. during this pandemic,

  57. because during the pandemic, we have been isolated, alone,

  58. left as the dangling line at the bottom of the page in many ways.

  59. And we feel that, don't we?

  60. We know that in many ways.

  61. Some of us have literally been left as orphans in this world

  62. because COVID has taken their parents.

  63. Many of us have felt the pain of separation and distance and isolation.

  64. And some of it has also felt like abandonment,

  65. that even when we've been able to see some people,

  66. many who we love, we haven't seen and wonder,

  67. where'd they go?

  68. And it's been hard, hasn't it?

  69. It's been a hard season.

  70. And maybe you feel that orphaned would be a decent word

  71. for how you've experienced some of the pandemic today.

  72. We often will feel this way.

  73. Sometimes personal disappointment,

  74. deep wounds, broken relationships,

  75. loss will create this emptiness

  76. and this sense of,

  77. I'm alone in this world.

  78. Jesus says,

  79. I will not leave you as orphans.

  80. I think there might be another sense in this passage as well

  81. that Jesus is saying that to his disciples.

  82. If you remember back from,

  83. Pastor Nick preached last week

  84. about doing and what Jesus promised in verse 12,

  85. that the disciples would do greater works

  86. than the works that Jesus did.

  87. This is a great promise

  88. that it's an amplification,

  89. it's an implied condition of Jesus saying,

  90. if you keep my word,

  91. if you love me,

  92. you will go

  93. and as you carry out this mission

  94. that I'm sending you on,

  95. you're gonna extend and build

  96. and see God build his kingdom

  97. in amazing ways.

  98. Now we need to be clear on one thing.

  99. When we read these words,

  100. like verse 15,

  101. if you love me,

  102. you will keep my commandments.

  103. Our most natural reading in English

  104. is that that's a causal effect.

  105. If this, then this.

  106. If this happens,

  107. that will produce something else.

  108. And we need to rethink

  109. how we read these sentences

  110. because I don't believe

  111. they're actually causal.

  112. I think they're correlations.

  113. It means if this is true,

  114. then this is also true.

  115. And these things go together.

  116. So loving and obeying his commandments

  117. go together.

  118. We'll see how important this is later

  119. as we look at it.

  120. But recognize that Jesus is telling his disciples,

  121. you're gonna do great things.

  122. You're gonna love me

  123. and you're gonna obey my commandments.

  124. And the disciples are thinking,

  125. how is that gonna happen?

  126. Judas has just left.

  127. Peter's going to fail.

  128. What in the world?

  129. And I wonder if maybe some of us

  130. feel that way

  131. in our Christian lives as well.

  132. Maybe we've tried to be obedient.

  133. Maybe we've tried to love God.

  134. Tried to be a faithful follower.

  135. We've tried to read the Bible every day.

  136. We've tried to pray every day.

  137. We've tried to be patient with our kids

  138. in every circumstance.

  139. And if you're a parent,

  140. you're starting to laugh

  141. because we realize that none of us

  142. can do these things perfectly.

  143. And it feels overwhelming

  144. and it becomes a burden.

  145. It feels like Jesus has said,

  146. you're gonna go and have to perform

  147. perfectly in the world

  148. and do all these great things for God.

  149. And you're gonna do it on your own.

  150. And maybe the disciples felt abandoned,

  151. orphaned in that sense too.

  152. Like your high school teacher,

  153. it says,

  154. I want you to go write a six-page paper

  155. and tell me everything

  156. that is important to know

  157. about the country of China.

  158. It's history, it's culture,

  159. it's language, it's politics,

  160. it's economics.

  161. It's an overwhelming task.

  162. How could I even begin

  163. to understand all that,

  164. let alone accomplish that

  165. and produce what you're asking for?

  166. And sometimes in our Christian lives,

  167. particularly when we take it seriously,

  168. we feel the same burden.

  169. How could we ever do that?

  170. It's overwhelming and defeating.

  171. Our failures then define us,

  172. our weakness defeats us,

  173. and we often despair.

  174. And we despair not only of trying,

  175. but we despair of God himself.

  176. This is a problem.

  177. That many of us have.

  178. But Jesus speaks to his disciples

  179. and to us saying,

  180. you are not alone in these things.

  181. Not so will I leave you as orphans.

  182. And this leads us then,

  183. if this is the problem that we face,

  184. this feeling of being orphaned,

  185. both spiritually and just generally in life,

  186. Jesus says,

  187. here is the provision that I have for you.

  188. Look with me in verses 16 and 17.

  189. I will ask the Father,

  190. and he will give you another helper

  191. to be with you forever,

  192. even the spirit of truth.

  193. Jesus says,

  194. I will not leave you alone,

  195. but I will send another one,

  196. another helper to come alongside.

  197. Now, many of you probably know this,

  198. but the Greek word there is paraclete.

  199. And it's good to know

  200. because it's not an easy word to translate.

  201. Comforter, helper, teacher, guide, friend, advocate, counselor

  202. are all different English translations

  203. that try to get at what that word means.

  204. And all of them capture some of it.

  205. At its core, it probably means

  206. one who comes alongside

  207. to give aid,

  208. to give encouragement,

  209. to give strength.

  210. One who is present

  211. and actually able to give help.

  212. And this is what Jesus is promising.

  213. And the passage itself

  214. gives us a lot of information

  215. about this one,

  216. this helper,

  217. according to ESV,

  218. who will come alongside with us.

  219. Right?

  220. First of all,

  221. we see in verse 16

  222. that he is not just a helper,

  223. but he is another helper.

  224. What does that mean?

  225. He is another one like Jesus.

  226. Jesus has been with his disciples.

  227. How has he helped them?

  228. He has spoken truth to them.

  229. He has encouraged their hearts.

  230. He has taught them.

  231. He has given them examples.

  232. He has seen them

  233. and called them to take steps

  234. in exerting his power.

  235. They have experienced amazing things.

  236. The disciples may be losing Jesus,

  237. but he's saying,

  238. you're not going to lose

  239. what you've gotten

  240. from me being with you

  241. because I'm going to send another one

  242. like me to come alongside.

  243. And not only am I going to send one like me,

  244. but I'm going to reaffirm

  245. that he's going to come from the Father.

  246. I'm going to ask that God

  247. is going to come

  248. and provide all that you need.

  249. And not only that,

  250. but he will be with you forever.

  251. I'm not just giving you

  252. a temporary or conditional gift.

  253. And certainly it seems

  254. at times in the Old Testament,

  255. the Holy Spirit might come

  256. and be on someone

  257. for a season or for a task.

  258. But in the New Testament,

  259. the promise is that

  260. he will come and be with us forever.

  261. He will be a spiritual help

  262. that the world cannot receive

  263. nor see nor understand.

  264. What in the world does that mean?

  265. Well, remember in John's gospel,

  266. the world is the system

  267. that has rejected Jesus

  268. and rejects God.

  269. And so what Jesus is saying is

  270. the Holy Spirit, God himself,

  271. is going to come to the world

  272. and of course they're not going to receive it.

  273. They're not going to see it.

  274. They're not going to understand it.

  275. So they may dismiss

  276. everything they see as luck,

  277. circumstance, hard work,

  278. human ingenuity, just chaos.

  279. Whatever it is,

  280. they're going to dismiss it

  281. and not be able to see

  282. the Holy Spirit for who he is

  283. and what he does.

  284. Remember what Jesus says in John 3,

  285. the wind blows where it wishes.

  286. You hear it sound,

  287. but you do not know

  288. where it comes from

  289. or where it goes.

  290. So it is with everyone

  291. who is born of the Spirit.

  292. But if you have eyes to see,

  293. and Jesus is saying,

  294. you as my disciples,

  295. because you know me,

  296. you will see this.

  297. You will see the effects

  298. and you will know

  299. that it's the Holy Spirit.

  300. And he is not just a Holy Spirit,

  301. but he is a spirit of truth.

  302. He will come and remind you.

  303. We're going to learn more

  304. about this next week

  305. because it's the focus

  306. of the passage right after this.

  307. But like a spotlight,

  308. Jesus is going to,

  309. or Jesus says,

  310. the Holy Spirit is going to shine

  311. all of his light on Jesus

  312. and Jesus' life and death

  313. and resurrection

  314. and his teaching

  315. to illuminate the truth

  316. for us as his followers.

  317. And finally,

  318. we need to recognize

  319. that the Holy Spirit is personal.

  320. In verse 17,

  321. John explicitly uses

  322. personal pronouns.

  323. They are not impersonal.

  324. They are not it.

  325. It is he in those verses

  326. to remind us

  327. that the Holy Spirit

  328. is not like the force,

  329. mysterious mitochondrians

  330. swimming around

  331. in our bloodstream,

  332. nor is it the effect

  333. of gamma rays

  334. that allow us

  335. to turn green

  336. and smash things.

  337. It is not all,

  338. there are lots of ways

  339. in which we think

  340. of these external powers

  341. and it's none of those things.

  342. The Holy Spirit

  343. is a person,

  344. the person of God

  345. who will come

  346. and in union with us,

  347. come alongside of us

  348. to work in us.

  349. This is the doctrine

  350. of the indwelling

  351. of the Holy Spirit

  352. that for all

  353. who have placed

  354. their faith in Christ

  355. at the moment of salvation,

  356. when God regenerates

  357. our hearts,

  358. when he declares us justified,

  359. when we believe

  360. and trust in Jesus

  361. for the forgiveness

  362. of our sins,

  363. we get the gift

  364. of the Holy Spirit

  365. that he comes

  366. and he is in us

  367. and with us.

  368. Jesus says,

  369. I will not leave you alone,

  370. but the Holy Spirit

  371. will come

  372. and he will come

  373. alongside of you

  374. and be in you.

  375. And this is really exciting.

  376. This is just the opening chapter.

  377. We have five sermons

  378. on the Holy Spirit

  379. in the next eight weeks.

  380. So hang on to your hat.

  381. It's going to be really fun

  382. as we explore

  383. different aspects

  384. of how the Holy Spirit

  385. is sent to come

  386. and what this is.

  387. But what I want you to see

  388. is that in the fear

  389. of us living

  390. as orphans

  391. in this world,

  392. Jesus says,

  393. no,

  394. I will send

  395. the Holy Spirit

  396. to come alongside you

  397. and to be with you.

  398. And what does this

  399. produce in us?

  400. What does this produce

  401. in our lives?

  402. If those are the things

  403. that we see,

  404. what does it produce?

  405. Well, I think it produces

  406. three things.

  407. We see in verses 18 through 20,

  408. Jesus is saying,

  409. this is what's going to happen.

  410. I'm going to go away

  411. and then I'm going to be

  412. raised from the dead

  413. and you're going to see me again

  414. for a little while

  415. because I live,

  416. you will live,

  417. you will experience

  418. the resurrection power

  419. of being joined with me

  420. but then I'm going to ascend

  421. to heaven

  422. and I'm going to ascend

  423. to the Holy Spirit.

  424. And this is what

  425. the day of Pentecost is.

  426. This is what the prophecy

  427. that was read earlier

  428. by Tosin

  429. from Joel 2

  430. was predicting

  431. and speaking forward

  432. saying,

  433. this is the day

  434. that's going to come

  435. and when the Spirit comes

  436. it's going to have

  437. this tremendous power

  438. that now is at work

  439. throughout the world

  440. until Jesus returns.

  441. I think there are

  442. three things

  443. that the full effect

  444. of the risen Savior

  445. coming to us

  446. by the Spirit

  447. that we can see

  448. in this passage.

  449. So we're going to unpack

  450. three implications,

  451. three produce.

  452. I'm gardening this.

  453. I'm trying to garden.

  454. Trying to grow things.

  455. And the hope is that

  456. they will produce things

  457. that we'll be able to eat.

  458. So what is it

  459. that the Holy Spirit

  460. wants to produce in us

  461. by His coming?

  462. Three things.

  463. First,

  464. we've mentioned it

  465. but I want to spend

  466. a little more time

  467. thinking about it.

  468. Verse 16,

  469. He will be with you

  470. forever.

  471. The Holy Spirit

  472. will come

  473. to provide

  474. for His disciples

  475. and for us

  476. security.

  477. I think often

  478. Christians live

  479. with a fear.

  480. Can I lose

  481. the Holy Spirit?

  482. what if I blow it?

  483. No,

  484. what if I really blow it?

  485. No,

  486. what if I really,

  487. really,

  488. really blow it?

  489. The sin that's like

  490. beyond the sin

  491. that's acceptable.

  492. What about like

  493. people in the Old Testament

  494. like King Saul

  495. where the Spirit

  496. left him

  497. because of his

  498. unfaithfulness?

  499. If I'm a bad enough

  500. Christian,

  501. will God abandon me?

  502. Friends,

  503. what Jesus says is,

  504. the Spirit

  505. is not being given

  506. because you are

  507. a good enough Christian.

  508. I am not sending it

  509. to you because

  510. you have performed

  511. well enough

  512. that I'm going to

  513. give you this

  514. second gift

  515. or this second blessing.

  516. The Holy Spirit

  517. is going to be

  518. given to you

  519. because I ask

  520. the Father

  521. and He will send

  522. it to you

  523. because you are

  524. connected with me.

  525. This is good news.

  526. Ephesians 1, 13,

  527. the Apostle Paul

  528. says it this way,

  529. in Him,

  530. that is in Jesus also,

  531. when you heard

  532. the word of truth,

  533. the gospel of your salvation

  534. and believed in Him,

  535. you were sealed

  536. with the promised

  537. Holy Spirit

  538. who is the guarantee

  539. of our inheritance

  540. until we acquire

  541. possession of it

  542. to the praise

  543. of His glory.

  544. This image

  545. is like a seal,

  546. right?

  547. A letter that

  548. then wax was dripped

  549. and then a signet

  550. or a seal

  551. was marked on it

  552. saying,

  553. this is from me

  554. and this is mine.

  555. And that's what God

  556. does when He gives

  557. to His children

  558. His Holy Spirit.

  559. He says,

  560. these are mine.

  561. You are mine

  562. because of the Holy Spirit

  563. and the gift of it.

  564. And this is the security

  565. that the New Testament

  566. promises

  567. to believers.

  568. And this then leads

  569. to the second thing,

  570. the second produce

  571. that we see

  572. from the Holy Spirit

  573. and that is a relationship.

  574. Look with me

  575. at 21 to 23.

  576. We are now swimming

  577. in the deep waters

  578. of Trinitarian theology

  579. and I am not going

  580. to be able to parse

  581. it all out for you today.

  582. But we've talked

  583. at the beginning

  584. about how easy it is

  585. to feel abandoned,

  586. to feel alone

  587. like an orphan

  588. without anyone

  589. in this world.

  590. And these verses

  591. remind us

  592. in 21 through 23

  593. that God is promising

  594. through Jesus

  595. something completely opposite.

  596. They thought,

  597. the disciples thought,

  598. we know Jesus

  599. in the flesh

  600. in the person

  601. but what's going to happen

  602. when He's gone?

  603. Look with me

  604. at 21 through 23 again.

  605. He says,

  606. if you have

  607. my commandments

  608. and keep them,

  609. He it is

  610. who loves me

  611. and he who loves me

  612. will be loved

  613. by my Father

  614. and I will love him

  615. and manifest myself

  616. to him.

  617. And then in response

  618. to Judas' questions

  619. He says,

  620. everyone loves me,

  621. keeps my word,

  622. my Father will love him

  623. and we will come to him

  624. and we will make

  625. our home with him.

  626. We will stay

  627. with him

  628. forever.

  629. Jesus is saying

  630. the Holy Spirit,

  631. this helper

  632. will come alongside

  633. and He will mediate

  634. for us

  635. this incredible truth

  636. that when God calls us

  637. to faith in Christ

  638. He calls us

  639. into a personal relationship

  640. with the triune God

  641. who created the universe.

  642. It is a relationship

  643. of love.

  644. Jesus will love us.

  645. The Father will love us.

  646. The Holy Spirit

  647. will mediate this love

  648. to us

  649. by dwelling in us.

  650. And friends,

  651. I know it's trite

  652. and cliche

  653. to talk about

  654. having a personal

  655. relationship with God

  656. because it's been

  657. kicked around

  658. for 50 years

  659. and because certainly

  660. some people

  661. have made professions

  662. of having a personal

  663. relationship with God

  664. and yet their life

  665. shows absolutely

  666. no evidence

  667. of it actually being true.

  668. So we want to

  669. acknowledge that.

  670. And yet,

  671. do you see

  672. how intensely personal

  673. this promise is

  674. in this passage?

  675. The spiritual presence

  676. of God

  677. is real.

  678. We will make

  679. our home

  680. with you.

  681. And this is not

  682. just something

  683. that we should think

  684. about in our heads

  685. to parse out.

  686. It is something

  687. to be felt.

  688. Have you known

  689. the presence of God

  690. in your life?

  691. Have you known

  692. the Holy Spirit

  693. whispering truths

  694. in difficult times?

  695. Have you ever,

  696. as you experienced

  697. God's creation,

  698. felt that you weren't alone

  699. but that God

  700. was with you

  701. rejoicing

  702. in the creation

  703. that He has made?

  704. Have you known

  705. those times

  706. when you felt abandoned

  707. by all others

  708. in this world?

  709. When God

  710. has reminded you,

  711. I am with you

  712. always to the ends

  713. of the age.

  714. Now look,

  715. friends,

  716. I want to admit,

  717. I don't always

  718. feel it,

  719. but I felt it enough

  720. to know that it's true.

  721. And on the days

  722. that I don't feel it,

  723. I can cling

  724. to the promises

  725. and the knowledge

  726. that it's true

  727. because I know

  728. and have experienced

  729. the reality

  730. that God

  731. is not just an idea

  732. but a person

  733. and He invites us

  734. into a personal relationship.

  735. 1 Peter 1,

  736. 7 and 8

  737. says this

  738. about the believers

  739. in Rome.

  740. Though you have not

  741. seen Him,

  742. you love Him.

  743. Though you do not

  744. see Him now,

  745. you believe in Him

  746. and rejoice

  747. with joy

  748. that is inexpressible

  749. and filled with glory,

  750. obtaining the outcome

  751. of your faith,

  752. the salvation

  753. of your souls.

  754. This is the crazy thing

  755. about this,

  756. isn't it?

  757. Because when we want

  758. a relationship,

  759. if I want a relationship

  760. with Spondin,

  761. I will sit down

  762. and there's a person there

  763. and I can talk to him

  764. and he can respond to me

  765. and we can have

  766. that kind of relationship.

  767. God is a spirit.

  768. Jesus and His disciples

  769. experience the kind of thing

  770. that I'm able

  771. to have with Spondin

  772. and now Jesus is saying,

  773. I'm going to go away

  774. and I'm going to send you

  775. a spiritual

  776. person of the Trinity

  777. to dwell with you

  778. that you're going

  779. to relate to.

  780. Not exactly in the same way

  781. but in a similar way,

  782. in the same sense

  783. of a personal relationship.

  784. And I know that we struggle

  785. with it.

  786. I know that it's hard

  787. to imagine

  788. and yet the witness

  789. of the church

  790. throughout history

  791. and the witness

  792. of my own walk

  793. with the Lord

  794. is that it is real.

  795. That God is a person

  796. and that we can

  797. commune

  798. and fellowship

  799. with Him

  800. through His Holy Spirit.

  801. Have a great joy.

  802. And so the question

  803. then we must ask ourselves

  804. is do we have

  805. a relationship

  806. with God?

  807. Or have we just

  808. agreed to a certain

  809. set of principles,

  810. affirmed a certain creed,

  811. or assumed

  812. that going through

  813. a certain set

  814. of ritual actions

  815. or acts of service

  816. have created

  817. a standing with God

  818. but not a relationship?

  819. Friends,

  820. if that's true,

  821. don't let those counterfeits

  822. rob you

  823. of the real thing.

  824. Seek the Lord

  825. while He may be found.

  826. He is not far from you

  827. and He will respond

  828. if you ask Him.

  829. So the first fruit

  830. is security

  831. and the second fruit

  832. is relationship.

  833. The third one,

  834. finally,

  835. is power.

  836. Power to enable us

  837. to obey

  838. and to love.

  839. You may have seen this.

  840. It's sprinkled

  841. throughout this passage,

  842. right?

  843. If you love me,

  844. you will keep

  845. my commandments.

  846. Verse 15.

  847. And then verse 21,

  848. He says again,

  849. whoever has my commandments

  850. and keeps them,

  851. he it is who loves me.

  852. In verse 23 again,

  853. if anyone loves me,

  854. he will keep my word.

  855. And again,

  856. it's easy for us

  857. to hear all these things

  858. as conditionals.

  859. Right?

  860. You only have these things.

  861. You only have the Holy Spirit.

  862. You only have a relationship

  863. with me

  864. if you are good enough.

  865. But it's not

  866. a conditional statement.

  867. It's a cord.

  868. Jesus is painting

  869. a portrait

  870. of what it means

  871. to know him.

  872. If you know me,

  873. my spirit will come to you.

  874. You will have security.

  875. You will have relationship.

  876. And you will have power

  877. to love me

  878. and to obey me.

  879. We talked about

  880. at the beginning

  881. how easy it is

  882. for Christians

  883. to think,

  884. I'm trying to be good enough

  885. on my own strength

  886. that God will accept me

  887. and I can experience

  888. some of those good things.

  889. How easy it is

  890. to feel orphaned

  891. and feel the terrible burden

  892. of obedience

  893. that we carry around.

  894. The Spirit instead

  895. produces in us

  896. love and obedience.

  897. When we have

  898. a life-giving relationship

  899. with God,

  900. the Spirit comes

  901. and changes us.

  902. He turns our affection

  903. so that increasingly

  904. we love God

  905. and the things

  906. that God loves

  907. and we hate

  908. the things that He hates.

  909. We pursue the things

  910. that God values

  911. and we find

  912. as less and less

  913. valuable to us,

  914. less precious to us,

  915. the things that

  916. aren't interesting,

  917. that are not of interest

  918. in God's kingdom.

  919. We grow

  920. so that God becomes

  921. the greatest treasure.

  922. God becomes the thing.

  923. What do you want?

  924. If you could have one thing

  925. on a deserted island,

  926. what do I want?

  927. I want God with me.

  928. He becomes

  929. my greatest treasure.

  930. He becomes

  931. my highest priority

  932. in all of my relationships.

  933. And it's not just

  934. to love Him,

  935. but in this then

  936. comes the power

  937. to obey Him.

  938. Because as we love

  939. the things that God loves

  940. and hate the thing

  941. that God hates,

  942. we increasingly

  943. are transformed

  944. to have strength

  945. to do the things

  946. that God calls us to

  947. because living

  948. in His kingdom

  949. comes,

  950. puts us in a position

  951. of being parallel

  952. with what His commands are.

  953. As we love His kingdom,

  954. we will say,

  955. we want the things

  956. that God wants

  957. and we will pursue them

  958. and we will not do

  959. the things

  960. that lead to destruction

  961. and death.

  962. When we

  963. have the Holy Spirit,

  964. He is able

  965. to teach us

  966. and change our hearts

  967. and empower us

  968. to have the fruit

  969. of the Spirit.

  970. That's a whole other sermon.

  971. Go read Galatians 5.

  972. But that's something

  973. that God will produce

  974. in us.

  975. And yes,

  976. there is us

  977. striving for those things,

  978. but we are striving

  979. with all the power

  980. that God gives

  981. by His Holy Spirit.

  982. It is us working

  983. out our salvation,

  984. but it is because

  985. God is at work

  986. in us

  987. that we can do

  988. these things.

  989. And this is what

  990. the Holy Spirit

  991. gives to us.

  992. not by performance,

  993. but by daily

  994. dependence on Him.

  995. What does that look like?

  996. How do we pursue

  997. obedience and love

  998. for God?

  999. Well,

  1000. just like we entered

  1001. into a relationship

  1002. with God,

1003. we do it by faith.

  1004. We wake up

  1005. in the morning

  1006. and we affirm

  1007. that God is there

1008. and that the Holy Spirit

  1009. lives in us.

  1010. We admit our need.

  1011. We confess

  1012. that we are unable

  1013. to live

  1014. the life

1015. that God would want us

  1016. to live that day

  1017. apart from Him.

  1018. We pray

  1019. for God's help

  1020. and we ask Him.

  1021. And then we walk

  1022. out into the world

  1023. with confidence

1024. that God is with us

  1025. and that God

  1026. will empower us

  1027. to live the life

1028. He wants to that day.

1029. And we don't just do it

  1030. once in the morning

1031. and then leave it behind,

  1032. but it becomes

1033. this thing that we do

  1034. throughout the day

1035. as we have these moments

  1036. of temptation,

1037. as we have these moments

  1038. of fear and worry,

1039. as we have these moments

  1040. of being overwhelmed

  1041. and not being able

1042. to do what we think

  1043. we ought to do

  1044. to please God.

  1045. We stop again.

  1046. We confess our need.

1047. We ask God to help us

1048. and then we move ahead

  1049. in faith

1050. that God will be able

  1051. to do us.

  1052. And when we live

  1053. a life like that,

  1054. then pursuing obedience

1055. is no longer a duty,

  1056. but it's a delight.

  1057. Then we no longer

  1058. are working

  1059. to build a resume

  1060. so that God

  1061. would accept us,

  1062. but we do it

  1063. simply to please

1064. the one that we have loved.

  1065. We do it not

  1066. to make ourselves great,

1067. but to make God great

1068. and not to look good

1069. in the eyes of others,

  1070. but to let others

  1071. see God in us.

  1072. Friends,

1073. this is a great hope.

  1074. Just as He spoke

  1075. to His disciples

  1076. on that day,

  1077. He speaks to us

  1078. and He says,

1079. I will not leave you

  1080. as orphans,

1081. but I will ask the Father

1082. and He will send you

  1083. a helper,

1084. and that one will come

  1085. and provide for you

  1086. all that you need

  1087. for security,

  1088. for relationship,

  1089. for love,

  1090. a life of love

  1091. and obedience

  1092. that will bring glory

  1093. to God.

  1094. For those of you

1095. who are here this morning

  1096. who are seeking

  1097. to know Christ,

  1098. ask the Holy Spirit

1099. to be at work in you.

  1100. Let Him draw you

1101. to the truth of Christ

1102. and into the love of Christ.

  1103. Let Him lead you

  1104. to faith,

  1105. believe in Christ

  1106. for your salvation.

  1107. And if you're here

  1108. this morning

1109. and you have known Christ

  1110. but have been one

  1111. who's carried great burdens,

1112. God has not abandoned you.

  1113. He has given you

  1114. His Holy Spirit

  1115. to empower you.

  1116. Cultivate this dependent life,

1117. ask Him for your help,

  1118. and believe

  1119. that He has promised

1120. and that He is able.

  1121. Let's pray.

1122. Lord, we invite you now

  1123. just as you promised

  1124. your disciples

  1125. to make yourself

  1126. manifest to us

  1127. through your Holy Spirit.

1128. Lord, that we would know you.

1129. Lord, there's so many ways

1130. in which you are at work

1131. that we do not acknowledge.

1132. Lord, we pray this morning

1133. that you would help us.

1134. Help us to see your Spirit

1135. and help us to know,

1136. Lord, that rather than abandon,

  1137. Lord, you have come.

1138. Come in your Holy Spirit

  1139. to work in us

  1140. for our good

  1141. and for your glory.

1142. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1143. Amen.
