  1. Let's turn to our sermon text. So today, our series in the Gospel of John takes us to John

    John 15:1–11

  2. chapter 15, verses 1 through 11. So let me invite you to turn there with me,

  3. and as you turn there, let me pray as we come to God's Word together.

  4. Father, we ask that you would pour out your Spirit among us to help us to understand this Word

  5. that your Spirit has inspired, and to help us to understand and to know Christ more,

  6. because we know that as we see him in all of his glory, we are transformed

  7. into his likeness from glory to glory. Lord, clothe us with your beauty as we behold you in

  8. your Word, we pray. In Christ's name, amen. So let me read John chapter 15, verses 1 through 11 for us.

    John 15:1–11

  9. Jesus says to his disciples, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

  10. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit,

  11. he prunes that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken

  12. to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in

  13. the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, and you are the branches. Whoever

  14. abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

  15. If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers, and the branches are

  16. gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you,

  17. ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified that you bear

  18. much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.

  19. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my

  20. Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy

  21. may be in you, and that your joy may be full. So in 1989, Stephen Covey published a book called

  22. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. In this book, Covey seeks to lay down what he calls

  23. the universal and timeless principles for how a person can live a productive and effective life.

  24. And since 1989, this book has gone on to sell something like 25 million copies. That's one of

  25. the best-selling books on productivity and personal management and self-help ever written.

  26. Now clearly, if it has sold that many copies, this book speaks to a need that many, many people feel.

  27. Right? And since then, hundreds of books have been written and seminars taught and TED Talks given

  28. about how we can be more productive and more effective, not just at work or in time management,

  29. but in life. You see, deep down as humans, we don't just want to exist. We don't just want to float along.

  30. We want to be fruitful. We want to be and do something that lasts, that's meaningful.

  31. And this desire goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden. You see, when God created humanity, God made us

  32. with a purpose to steward creation, to work and keep the garden, to see the glory of God extend to the

  33. ends of the earth as we, his image bearers, use the gifts he's given us to bring flourishing to the world

  34. he has made. But of course, the human story took a tragic turn, didn't it? Rather than using our gifts

  35. to cultivate creation for the glory of God, we chose to become our own gods and use our gifts

  36. to advance our own kingdoms rather than God's kingdom. And the result of the fall has been

  37. alienation and disintegration and death ever since. So we as humans are a bit of a walking contradiction,

  38. aren't we? On the one hand, we want to use our gifts and our powers to do something that lasts,

  39. to flourish and to bear fruit, and that's good. But on the other hand, we're too often motivated to

  40. be fruitful by a desire to exalt ourselves rather than the God who made us. Too often we're motivated

  41. by a desire to make a name for ourselves, like the builders of the Tower of Babel. Do you remember of

  42. that story? Only to see it all kind of end in confusion. Now the passage before us, John 15,

  43. 1 through 11, is all about bearing fruit. As disciples of Jesus, we want to be productive

  44. and effective for God and his kingdom. In fact, this whole section of John's gospel, what we call

  45. Jesus's farewell discourse, is about Jesus preparing his disciples not just for his departure, but for

  46. their upcoming mission when he returns to the Father. And how will the disciples, how will the church

  47. go forth and bear fruit that lasts? Now being fruitful here is sort of an all-encompassing

  48. thing, bearing fruit. In the New Testament, we see that bearing fruit can refer to a number of things.

  49. Bearing fruit can refer to becoming Christ-like in character. Remember Galatians 5, where Paul talks

  50. about the fruit of the Spirit. Bearing fruit can also mean doing good works, loving our neighbors as

  51. ourselves. Remember Colossians 1, 10, where Paul talks about bearing fruit in every good work. And of

  52. course, it can also mean winning others to Christ. It can refer to evangelism and discipleship. A little

  53. earlier in Colossians 1, Paul says, in the whole world, the gospel is bearing fruit and increasing as

  54. it does among you since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God and truth. So bearing fruit

  55. means helping others come to faith in Christ. So you see, bearing fruit kind of describes the totality

  56. of our life as followers of Jesus, becoming like him in character, doing good works, sharing the gospel,

  57. winning others to faith. But how do we do that? We want to be fruit-bearing Christians, but what's the key

  58. for doing so? Because we don't want to go build another tower of Babel that just ends in confusion

  59. and alienation. We want to bear fruit that lasts. So what's the key?

  60. Well, here's the big idea of our passage. In order to bear fruit as disciples, we must abide in Christ.

  61. Abiding in Christ is the necessary, non-negotiable, irreplaceable thing if we're going to bear fruit.

  62. You can go to a seminar, you can attend a class, you can read a book, you can listen to a lecture,

  63. you can double your effort, double your zeal, double your time, double your activity, you can

  64. strategize, plan, and prepare, you can research, and rehearse, and review, and all those things might

  65. be right and good, but they will amount to nothing if we aren't abiding in Christ.

  66. Verse 5 says it all. Jesus says, I'm the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me, and I in him,

  67. he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me, you can do nothing. So if you want to bear fruit,

  68. you must abide in Christ. And our passage answers two questions about this idea of abiding in Christ.

  69. First, our passage answers the question of why. Why must we abide in Christ in order to bear fruit?

  70. And then it answers how. How do we abide in Christ so that we bear much fruit? So let's look first at

  71. why, and then we'll look at how. So first, why? Why must we abide in Christ in order to bear fruit?

  72. Verses 1 through 6 kind of provide an answer to that question that's twofold. Jesus is basically

  73. going to tell us, you have to abide in me because of who I am, and because of who the Father is.

  74. Because of who Jesus is, and because of who the Father is. That's why we have to abide in Christ.

  75. So let's look at first, we have to abide in Christ in order to bear fruit because of who Jesus is. And

  76. Jesus says, because he's the true vine. That's how the passage begins, right? Jesus says, I am the true

  77. vine. Now this is the last of the famous I am statements in the Gospel of John. And like all the

  78. previous I am statements, this one is a rich and powerful metaphor. Jesus is the true vine.

  79. In a vineyard, think about it, where do the grapes come from? Well, they grow off the branches. And

  80. what are the branches connected to? Well, they're connected to the central vine, right? It's the vine

  81. that carries life and energy and vitality that flows through the branches and so produces the fruit.

  82. Now John has already told us as much about Jesus in his prologue. Do you remember in John 1-4,

  83. John says about Jesus, in him was life? Life is in Jesus. Jesus Christ, who was one with God from the

  84. beginning, the one through whom all things were made, he is life. He is the true vine.

  85. And just look at the records we have of Jesus' earthly ministry and you see this must be true.

  86. His words were words of authority and life-giving truth. His character was full of love and courage.

  87. His deeds were like none who had come before or after him. The blind were given sight, the lame were

  88. made to walk, the sick were made whole, the lepers were cleansed, the dead even were raised back to life.

  89. The power of life flowed through Jesus just like life-giving sap and energy flows through a vine,

  90. bringing fruit and life in its wake. We have to abide in Jesus to bear fruit because Jesus is the true vine.

  91. He's life itself. We were joking this week as a staff that wouldn't it be a great sort of visual

  92. illustration if I walked down to this little flower thing and just cut it off?

  93. And I'd say, see what happens when you're not connected? You die. Do you want to be like that?

  94. I figured I wouldn't go that way, but then I just did. So now it's in your mind. So it's done.

  95. Jesus is the vine. He's true life. We have to stay connected to him to bear fruit.

  96. But you know, this I am statement, this I am statement's more than just a metaphor.

  97. You know, these I am statements that Jesus makes in John's gospel,

  98. they're all rich actually, not just in metaphorical power, but they're rich with Old Testament overtones.

  99. There's a biblical, redemptive, historical reality that Jesus is talking about here.

  100. You see, in the Old Testament, the metaphor of a vine was used again and again to refer to what?

  101. To refer to God's people, to refer to Israel.

  102. God called Abraham and formed the people of Israel so that they, like a vine,

  103. might be planted in the midst of fallen creation and bear fruits amidst the ashes of Babel.

  104. That in the fallout of human confusion, Israel might be the place where God's fruit started to flourish again.

  105. Israel was meant to be a fruitful vine, glorifying God, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation,

  106. declaring God's life and light to the nations.

  107. They were meant to be the vine where fruit finally grew again.

  108. But what's interesting is that in places like Isaiah 5 or Jeremiah 2 or Ezekiel 15 or Hosea 10,

  109. when the prophets speak of Israel as the Lord's vine,

  110. it's not their success that we hear about, but their failure.

  111. That Israel, like the rest of us in humanity,

  112. we can't bear the fruit that we were meant to create.

  113. That Israel, too, must be rescued.

  114. And in Psalm 80 that Eli read for us earlier,

  115. Jerusalem, much like the Tower of Babel, ends in ruin and confusion.

  116. The people are judged and sent away into exile, and Jerusalem lies in ashes.

  117. And yes, God would eventually end the exile,

  118. and God would eventually rebuild Jerusalem,

  119. but still the people were waiting.

  120. When would God make us fruitful?

  121. When would we become the vine he intended us to be?

  122. And into this Old Testament hope,

  123. Jesus says to his disciples,

  124. I'm the true vine.

  125. The hopes of Israel,

  126. the mission of Israel,

  127. the people of Israel,

  128. all find their fulfillment.

  129. In me, Jesus says,

  130. I'm the true vine.

  131. And if you want to bear fruit,

  132. if you want to overcome the fall,

  133. if you want to do something that lasts,

  134. if you want to escape the pride and the folly of Babel,

  135. then you must be united to me.

  136. There's no other way.

  137. The mission of God to redeem the nations

  138. and heal creation,

  139. the mission that God launched through Israel,

  140. is now fulfilled in Jesus,

  141. the true Israel.

  142. So if we want to be God's people,

  143. if we want to be fruit-bearing people,

  144. we need to be Jesus' people,

  145. united to him,

  146. abiding in him.

  147. So why must we abide in Christ in order to bear fruit?

  148. On the one hand, because of who Jesus is.

  149. He's the true vine.

  150. There's no other.

  151. But on the other hand,

  152. because of who the Father is.

  153. Verses 1 and 2, Jesus continues.

  154. He says,

  155. I'm the true vine.

  156. My Father is the vine dresser.

  157. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit,

  158. he takes away.

  159. Every branch that does bear fruit,

  160. he prunes that it may bear more fruit.

  161. The Father, Jesus says,

  162. is the vine dresser.

  163. He's the gardener.

  164. He's the farmer.

  165. He's the vine grower.

  166. The vineyard belongs to him.

  167. And just like a vine grower is jealous

  168. for the success of his vines

  169. to see them flourish,

  170. so the Father is jealous

  171. for the glory of his Son,

  172. whom he loves.

  173. And that brings a warning and a promise.

  174. The warning is that

  175. if we say we are Christians,

  176. but bear no fruit,

  177. Jesus says,

  178. our judgment will be the same as those

  179. who reject Christ altogether.

  180. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit,

  181. the Father takes away.

  182. And then he says again in verse 6,

  183. if anyone does not abide in me,

  184. he's thrown away like a branch and withers.

  185. The branches are gathered,

  186. thrown into the fire,

  187. and burned.

  188. So the warning is this to us.

  189. If we merely profess to be believers,

  190. that is, if we take the name of Christ

  191. to ourselves,

  192. but our lives show no fruit

  193. of a real relationship with Christ,

  194. if they show no fruit of real union with him,

  195. no real change,

  196. no real vital union,

  197. then eventually,

  198. we will be removed altogether

  199. from the presence of God

  200. like branches bundled for the fire.

  201. So we must not merely profess Christ

  202. with our lips.

  203. We must embrace him

  204. and surrender to him

  205. with our whole hearts.

  206. We must abide in him.

  207. That's the warning.

  208. But there's also a promise.

  209. Every branch that does bear fruit,

  210. Jesus says,

  211. the Father prunes,

  212. that it may bear more fruit.

  213. For those who abide in Christ,

  214. the Father will use

  215. every circumstance of our lives,

  216. not just the good circumstances,

  217. but also and especially the trials

  218. and the hardships

  219. and the challenges

  220. and the losses

  221. to prune us

  222. that we might bear even more fruit.

  223. Like a master gardener,

  224. he will cut away

  225. what is lifeless,

  226. what is distracting,

  227. what is sinful,

  228. so that the life of Christ

  229. might flow for us,

  230. flow through us

  231. even more richly

  232. that we might bear even more fruit.

  233. So brothers and sisters,

  234. if you are in a season of trial

  235. or pain right now,

  236. do not despair.

  237. The life of the true vine

  238. is still flowing through you.

  239. And your heavenly Father

  240. is pruning you,

  241. shaping you,

  242. so that you might bear

  243. even more fruit.

  244. You know,

  245. what you think

  246. might be

  247. your greatest loss

  248. or your greatest liability

  249. for the kingdom,

  250. your greatest setback

  251. in your Father's hands

  252. becomes the work

  253. of a loving gardener

  254. who has a vision

  255. to see you flourish

  256. in beauty and praise.

  257. That's the promise.

  258. So in order to bear fruit,

  259. we must abide in Jesus.

  260. Why?

  261. Because of who Jesus is

  262. and because of who the Father is.

  263. Jesus is the true vine

  264. and the Father is the vine dresser.

  265. And now listen to what Jesus says

  266. in verse 3.

  267. If you have it open,

  268. look there.

  269. Already,

  270. Jesus says,

  271. you are clean

  272. because of the word

  273. that I've spoken to you.

  274. Now there's a bit of a play

  275. on words here.

  276. In Greek,

  277. the same root

  278. underneath the word prune

  279. in verse 2

  280. is also underneath

  281. the word clean

  282. in verse 3.

  283. In other words,

  284. Jesus is saying,

  285. the Father cleans up

  286. those who are already clean.

  287. And how are they clean?

  288. Because of the word

  289. that Jesus has spoken to us.

  290. Friends,

  291. hear this loud and clear.

  292. How do we get connected

  293. to Jesus,

  294. the true vine?

  295. Do we earn our way

  296. into proving

  297. that we can sort of

  298. bear a lot of fruit?

  299. Is there sort of

  300. some kind of like

  301. vineyard tryout?

  302. Where the Father

  303. sort of lines us all up

  304. and says,

  305. okay,

  306. make some fruit

  307. on your own

  308. in order to win

  309. a spot on the vine.

  310. No!

  311. That's the whole point

  312. of the metaphor.

  313. The whole point

  314. of this metaphor

  315. is that you can't

  316. produce fruit

  317. on your own.

  318. You can't perform

  319. your way

  320. into a saving relationship

  321. with God in Christ.

  322. Apart from Christ,

  323. we're dead wood.

  324. So how do you get

  325. connected in the first place?

  326. Jesus says,

  327. because of the word

  328. I've spoken to you.

  329. The word of Jesus

  330. comes to us,

  331. outside of us,

  332. as a word of grace.

  333. The word of Jesus

  334. that says,

  335. come to me,

  336. all who are weary

  337. and heavy laden,

  338. and I'll give you rest.

  339. The word of Jesus

  340. that says,

  341. I've not come to be served,

  342. but to serve,

  343. and to give my life

  344. as a ransom for many,

  345. for you.

  346. The word of Jesus

  347. that says,

  348. whoever believes in me

  349. will have eternal life,

  350. and you will dwell in me,

  351. and I will come

  352. and dwell in you.

  353. We're united

  354. to the vine

  355. when we hear

  356. the words of Christ

  357. and respond

  358. with believing trust in him.

  359. And we don't place our trust

  360. in a sort of set of doctrines,

  361. although biblical doctrines

  362. are beautiful,

  363. and we don't put our trust

  364. in a system of ethics,

  365. although biblical ethics

  366. are so life-giving.

  367. No,

  368. we place our trust

  369. in a person,

  370. in the crucified,

  371. risen,

  372. and ascended Lord Jesus

  373. who says,

  374. I'm the vine.

  375. Believe in me.

  376. And through believing

  377. in his word,

  378. Jesus says,

  379. you're clean.

  380. You're mine.

  381. And now,

  382. I want you to abide in me

  383. so that my life

  384. can flow through you

  385. more and more

  386. and so that you can go

  387. and bear much fruit.

  388. So that brings us

  389. to the next natural question.

  390. We've seen why

  391. we must abide in Christ

  392. in order to bear fruit.

  393. Now we need to ask how.

  394. Right?

  395. How do we do that?

  396. How do we abide in Christ

  397. in order to bear fruit?

  398. Well,

  399. in verses 7 through 11,

  400. Jesus tells us how.

  401. He doesn't leave us guessing.

  402. He gives us very practical means,

  403. actually,

  404. for abiding in him.

  405. First,

  406. he says,

  407. if you want to abide in me,

  408. then abide in my words.

  409. Look again at verses 7 and 8.

  410. If you abide in me

  411. and my words abide in you,

  412. ask whatever you wish

  413. and it'll be done for you.

  414. By this,

  415. my Father is glorified

  416. that you bear much fruit

  417. and so prove to be my disciples.

  418. So,

  419. abiding in Christ

  420. means first and foremost,

  421. abiding in his words.

  422. So,

  423. what does that mean?

  424. Well,

  425. think about the word abide itself.

  426. How might we define

  427. that word abide?

  428. I've been sort of using it

  429. a lot this morning,

  430. but what does it mean?

  431. Some translations say remain,

  432. some say live,

  433. some say stay.

  434. One translation even put it,

  435. make your home in.

  436. And I sort of liked that last one.

  437. To abide in Christ

  438. is to sort of make our home

  439. in Christ.

  440. That he's the place

  441. where we stay.

  442. He's the place

  443. where we rest.

  444. He's the place

  445. where we dine and celebrate.

  446. He's the place

  447. where we can weep

  448. and find comfort.

  449. Christ is our home

  450. and we abide in him.

  451. And to make ourselves

  452. at home

  453. in Christ

  454. is to make ourselves

  455. at home

  456. in his words.

  457. The things that he's said

  458. and the things

  459. that he continues to say.

  460. Now,

  461. where do we find those words?

  462. Well,

  463. we find them in the Gospels,

  464. of course.

  465. And so,

  466. we must read

  467. and ruminate

  468. and meditate

  469. on the Gospel records

  470. of Jesus.

  471. But you know,

  472. in the Gospels,

  473. Jesus also teaches

  474. that the Old Testament

  475. was really all about him as well.

  476. Jesus says,

  477. the Old Testament

  478. was my word too.

  479. So,

  480. then,

  481. we read

  482. and we ruminate

  483. and we meditate

  484. on the Old Testament,

  485. on the Pentateuch

  486. and the history books

  487. and the wisdom literature

  488. and the prophets

  489. because that too

  490. is the word of Jesus.

  491. But we also see

  492. that Jesus himself

  493. commissioned

  494. the New Testament apostles,

  495. gave them the Holy Spirit

  496. that they might go

  497. and teach

  498. and instruct

  499. and pass on

  500. all that he taught them

  501. in his name.

  502. So,

  503. that means

  504. not just the Gospels

  505. and not just the Old Testament

  506. but the rest of the New Testament

  507. as well

  508. is also the Jesus-authorized

  509. word of Christ.

  510. So,

  511. you see,

  512. the whole Bible,

  513. it's not just

  514. merely a collection

  515. of 66 books

  516. written by various authors

  517. over the course

  518. of 100 years.

  519. Yes,

  520. it is that.

  521. But through the work

  522. of the Spirit of Christ

  523. in and through

  524. those authors,

  525. the whole Bible

  526. is the very word

  527. of Jesus

  528. to us,

  529. his church.

  530. So,

  531. if we are to

  532. abide in Christ,

  533. we must make ourselves

  534. at home

  535. in the words

  536. of Christ.

  537. Christ.

  538. And look at what a treasure

  539. he has given us.

  540. All the pages of Scripture

  541. are there

  542. so that we might

  543. commune with him

  544. and commune with him

  545. as intimately

  546. and personally

  547. as a branch

  548. is vitally connected

  549. and organically

  550. knit together

  551. to the vine.

  552. Now,

  553. how do we know?

  554. How do we know

  555. we're abiding

  556. in Jesus' words?

  557. And how do we know

  558. we're sort of abiding

  559. in his words

  560. and his words

  561. are abiding in us

  562. and we're not just

  563. sort of reading them,

  564. right?

  565. After all,

  566. plenty of folks

  567. can read the Bible

  568. and not abide in Christ.

  569. Well,

  570. look at what Jesus

  571. says here.

  572. If you abide in me

  573. and my words

  574. abide in you,

  575. ask whatever you wish

  576. and it will be done

  577. for you.

  578. In other words,

  579. prayer

  580. is the sign

  581. that our reading

  582. of the Bible

  583. has become

  584. a real abiding

  585. in Christ.

  586. So,

  587. I think

  588. that causes us

  589. to ask ourselves

  590. a good question.

  591. When you and I

  592. read Scripture,

  593. do our minds,

  594. do our hearts

  595. move to prayer?

  596. Do you start

  597. talking to God,

  598. asking God

  599. for the things

  600. that you see

  601. him showing you

  602. in his word?

  603. Now,

  604. don't be immediately

  605. discouraged

  606. if you think,

  607. well,

  608. that's not really

  609. true of me.

  610. if your reading

  611. doesn't often

  612. turn into praying,

  613. then just take

  614. the simple advice

  615. of many,

  616. many saints

  617. down through

  618. the ages.

  619. Slow down.

  620. Read

  621. less

  622. so that you

  623. might pray

  624. more.

  625. You know,

  626. rather than reading

  627. three or four

  628. chapters of a gospel,

  629. try reading

  630. three or four

  631. verses

  632. slowly

  633. and then

  634. reread them.

  635. Reread them

  636. as if Jesus

  637. intended these

  638. words to be

  639. handed down to

  640. you so that

  641. you might

  642. commune with

  643. them and hear

  644. his voice

  645. because that's

  646. exactly why

  647. Jesus inspired

  648. the Scriptures.

  649. Ask,

  650. what's the point

  651. of the passage?

  652. Is there anything

  653. that jumps out

  654. at you?

  655. Where is the

  656. Spirit drawing

  657. you in,

  658. challenging you,

  659. comforting you?

  660. Slow down

  661. and then pray.

  662. And when we

  663. start praying

  664. in line with

  665. the word

  666. in this way,

  667. Jesus makes

  668. the incredible

  669. promise that

  670. God will

  671. answer those

  672. prayers.

  673. So abiding

  674. in Christ,

  675. how do we

  676. do it?

  677. First,

  678. abide in

  679. his word.

  680. Let his

  681. words abide

  682. in you.

  683. Abiding

  684. in Christ

  685. means second,

  686. abiding

  687. in his

  688. love.

  689. Look again

  690. at verses

  691. 9 and 10.

  692. As the

  693. Father has

  694. loved me,

  695. so have

  696. I loved

  697. you.

  698. Abide

  699. in my

  700. love.

  701. If you

  702. keep my

  703. commandments,

  704. you will

  705. abide in

  706. my love,

  707. just as I

  708. have kept

  709. my Father's

  710. commandments

  711. and abide

  712. in his

  713. love.

  714. Now,

  715. how might

  716. we abide

  717. in the

  718. love of

  719. Christ?

  720. How do

  721. we make

  722. ourselves

  723. at home

  724. in the

  725. love of

  726. Christ?

  727. And isn't

  728. this great?

  729. Jesus is

  730. saying,

  731. look,

  732. it's not

  733. just about

  734. hearing my

  735. words and

  736. kind of

  737. getting them

  738. into your

  739. head and

  740. your heart,

  741. but you

  742. also need

  743. to abide

  744. in my

  745. love.

  746. What does

  747. that mean?

  748. Well,

  749. first,

  750. I think

  751. abiding

  752. in the

  753. love of

  754. Christ

  755. means

  756. returning

  757. again and

  758. again to

  759. the fact

  760. that the

  761. love of

  762. Christ for

  763. us is

  764. the thing

  765. that is

  766. most true

  767. and most

  768. real about

  769. us.

  770. To make

  771. yourself at

  772. home in

  773. the love of

  774. Christ means

  775. to remind

  776. yourself again

  777. and again

  778. that is what

  779. is most

  780. real about

  781. me.

  782. Too quickly,

  783. we are tempted

  784. to leave the

  785. love of

  786. Christ and

  787. set up shop

  788. in our

  789. accomplishments

  790. or our

  791. successes,

  792. but then,

  793. as we all

  794. know,

  795. that means

  796. we've also

  797. set up shop

  798. in our

  799. shortcomings

  800. and in

  801. our

  802. failures.

  803. But Jesus

  804. says,

  805. remain in

  806. my love.

  807. Let my

  808. love be the

  809. vital energy

  810. that flows

  811. through you

  812. like sap

  813. flowing from

  814. a vine to

  815. its branches.

  816. And abiding

  817. in the love

  818. of Christ

  819. also means

  820. that we

  821. will be

  822. constantly

  823. returning

  824. to the

  825. cross of

  826. Christ.

  827. For at

  828. the cross,

  829. the love

  830. of Christ

  831. is seen

  832. in its

  833. fullness.

  834. You know,

  835. the first

  836. time I

  837. went to

  838. a vineyard,

  839. I was

  840. really surprised

  841. actually,

  842. because I

  843. was expecting

  844. when I went

  845. to this

  846. vineyard to

  847. see like

  848. rows and

  849. rows of

  850. big,

  851. bushy,

  852. thick vines,

  853. strong and

  854. sturdy,

  855. ready to

  856. like give

  857. life to

  858. the branches

  859. and the

  860. grapes.

  861. Of course,

  862. if any of

  863. you have

  864. ever been

  865. to a

  866. vineyard,

  867. you know

  868. that's

  869. not what

  870. I saw,

  871. right?

  872. The first

  873. time I

  874. visited a

  875. vineyard,

  876. what I

  877. found out

  878. was that

  879. the vines

  880. that produce

  881. the most

  882. desirable

  883. grapes

  884. aren't

  885. strong and

  886. aren't

  887. huge and

  888. aren't

  889. massive.

  890. They're

  891. these

  892. gnarled,

  893. twisted,

  894. ugly things

  895. coming out

  896. of the

  897. dirt,

  898. like three

  899. or four

  900. feet high,

  901. looking very

  902. weak.

  903. fruit.

  904. But from

  905. those twisted

  906. and naked

  907. vines in

  908. time come

  909. the most

  910. beautiful

  911. fruit.

  912. Isaiah 53

  913. 2 says,

  914. For he

  915. grew up

  916. before him

  917. like a

  918. young plant

  919. and like a

  920. root out of

  921. dry ground.

  922. He had no

  923. former majesty

  924. that we should

  925. look at him

  926. and no beauty

  927. that we should

  928. desire him.

  929. Friends,

  930. Jesus is a

  931. true vine,

  932. the only

  933. truly fruitful

  934. one.

  935. But look at

  936. where his love

  937. would take

  938. him.

  939. Look at where

  940. his love for

  941. us would lead

  942. him.

  943. He would be

  944. twisted and

  945. gnarled on a

  946. cross and

  947. hang on a

  948. rough piece of

  949. dead wood and

  950. himself would

  951. die.

  952. Why?

  953. Why would the

  954. true vine be

  955. cut off like

  956. that?

  957. God.

  958. Because he

  959. loves us.

  960. Because he

  961. wanted to

  962. rescue us from

  963. the death our

  964. sins deserve.

  965. Because he

  966. died as a

  967. substitute to

  968. deliver us from

  969. sin and death.

  970. So that we

  971. could abide in

  972. his love.

  973. And so that we

  974. might say with

  975. the apostle Paul,

  976. the life I now

  977. live, I live by

  978. faith in the

  979. son of God who

  980. loved me and

  981. gave himself for

  982. me.

  983. Now how do

  984. you know you're

  985. abiding in the

  986. love of Christ?

  987. How do you know

  988. you're abiding

  989. there?

  990. Well, again,

  991. what does Jesus

  992. say?

  993. If you keep my

  994. commandments, you'll

  995. abide in my love.

  996. Just as I have

  997. kept my father's

  998. commandments and

  999. abide in his

  1000. love.

  1001. Love and

  1002. obedience go

  1003. hand in hand.

  1004. Jesus the

  1005. son abides in

  1006. the love of the

  1007. father and so

  1008. keeps the

  1009. father's commands

  1010. in the same way

  1011. we abide in the

  1012. love of Jesus the

  1013. son and so we

  1014. keep the son's

  1015. commands.

  1016. Now let's be

  1017. honest.

  1018. The commandments

  1019. of Jesus are

  1020. not easy.

  1021. Love your

  1022. enemies.

  1023. Pray for those

  1024. who persecute

  1025. you.

  1026. If your hand

  1027. causes you to

  1028. sin, cut it

  1029. off.

  1030. Take up your

  1031. cross and

  1032. follow me.

  1033. Wash one

  1034. another's feet.

  1035. Serve one

  1036. another.

  1037. Forgive one

  1038. another.

  1039. Not just seven

  1040. times but 77

  1041. times.

  1042. What on earth

  1043. could lead

  1044. someone to want

  1045. to do anything

  1046. like that?

  1047. the love of

  1048. Christ can.

  1049. Because all

  1050. the fear and

  1051. all the pride

  1052. and all the

  1053. anger and all

  1054. the confusion

  1055. that we harbor

  1056. the love of

  1057. Christ meets us

  1058. there and

  1059. heals us and

  1060. forgives us and

  1061. comforts us and

  1062. gives us hope and

  1063. gives us strength so

  1064. that we not only

  1065. want to obey but

  1066. that we actually can

  1067. obey his commands.

  1068. And when we're

  1069. abiding in the love

  1070. of Christ suddenly

  1071. we can turn to

  1072. someone who's

  1073. wronged us and

  1074. we can forgive

  1075. them.

  1076. Because we know

  1077. that the true

  1078. vine was twisted

  1079. and gnarled for

  1080. us.

  1081. How could we not

  1082. forgive?

  1083. How could we not

  1084. pray for those who

  1085. persecute us?

  1086. How could we not

  1087. want to rid sin

  1088. from our lives?

  1089. How could we not

  1090. want to serve one

  1091. another and love

  1092. one another?

  1093. So abiding in

  1094. Christ's love leads

  1095. to obedience just

  1096. like abiding in

  1097. Christ's words leads

  1098. to prayer.

  1099. But last we don't

  1100. just abide in his

  1101. words or in his

  1102. love we also abide

  1103. in his joy.

  1104. Verse 11

  1105. These things I've

  1106. spoken to you that

1107. my joy may be in

  1108. you and that your

  1109. joy may be full.

  1110. When we make our

  1111. home in the words

  1112. of Christ and in

  1113. the love of Christ

  1114. do you know what

  1115. follows?

  1116. We suddenly find

  1117. ourselves at home in

  1118. the joy of Christ

  1119. and we stay there

  1120. and we remain and

  1121. we abide.

  1122. Even in sorrow

  1123. even in pain

  1124. even in loss

  1125. and brothers and

  1126. sisters you know

  1127. as Christians we

  1128. will face all

  1129. those things in

  1130. this life but

  1131. even there there's

  1132. a joy that nothing

  1133. can steal away.

  1134. The kind of joy

  1135. that comes not

  1136. just from being

  1137. loved but also

  1138. from having hope.

  1139. You know the

  1140. reason why a vine

  1141. dresser can look

  1142. out across a field

  1143. of old gnarled

  1144. vines and have a

  1145. smile on his face

  1146. is because he knows

  1147. what's coming.

  1148. In a few short

  1149. months those vines

  1150. are going to push

  1151. out tendrils and

  1152. those tendrils are

  1153. going to push out

  1154. leaves and those

  1155. leaves and tendrils

  1156. will grow into

  1157. branches full of

  1158. color and full of

  1159. life and then there

1160. will be a flower and

  1161. then there will be

  1162. fruit and then there

1163. will be a harvest and

1164. then there will be a

  1165. celebration.

  1166. celebration.

  1167. Perhaps you look out

  1168. over your life at

  1169. present and you just

  1170. see a twisted bunch

  1171. of sticks.

  1172. But if only you

  1173. could see what your

  1174. father the vine

  1175. dresser sees.

  1176. If only you could

  1177. see what soon will

  1178. be reality.

  1179. The leaf, the

  1180. flower, the fruit,

  1181. the harvest and

  1182. yes soon brothers and

  1183. sisters the

  1184. celebration.

  1185. celebration.

  1186. Christ will make all

  1187. things new and in

1188. him you will join the

  1189. celebration and the

  1190. fruit that you have

  1191. born in this life

1192. though it was made in

  1193. the midst of much

  1194. pruning your fruit will

1195. be caught up in the

  1196. celebration of

  1197. eternity.

  1198. After all why did

1199. Jesus do what he do?

1200. Did it do what he

  1201. did?

1202. Why was he willing to

  1203. hang fruitless and

  1204. alone on a cross?

  1205. The book of Hebrews

1206. says for the joy set

  1207. before him and you

1208. are part of that joy

  1209. so abide in him.

1210. And what will be the

  1211. sign that you're

  1212. abiding in his joy?

  1213. If the sign of

1214. abiding in his word is

1215. prayer and the sign of

1216. abiding in his love is

  1217. obedience what's the

  1218. sign you're abiding in

  1219. his joy?

  1220. Well what does Jesus

  1221. say?

  1222. These things I've

1223. spoken to you that my

1224. joy may be in you and

1225. that your joy may be

  1226. full.

1227. Friends the end of joy

  1228. is well it's joy.

  1229. Unstoppable unshakable

  1230. joy.

  1231. And that's why God

1232. made us in the first

  1233. place to glorify him

  1234. and enjoy him forever

  1235. as the old catechism

  1236. says.

1237. Joy in Christ is the

  1238. end.

1239. His joy leads to our

  1240. joy and that's the

  1241. fruit of it all.

  1242. Humanity redeemed from

  1243. our confusion and

  1244. death to know eternal

1245. joy in God once again.

1246. And you know this joy is

  1247. starting to take root

1248. when the old things that

1249. used to give you joy

1250. don't seem to have the

  1251. same power anymore.

1252. When the old lusts and

  1253. the old addictions and

1254. the old needs and the

1255. old fears and the old

  1256. longings when they've

  1257. just started to lose

  1258. their taste and now

1259. joy in God is what

  1260. really counts and what

  1261. really satisfies you.

1262. It will be imperfect and

1263. it will be ongoing in

1264. this life to be sure but

  1265. it will be real.

1266. And your joy will start

  1267. to be full.

1268. So friends if we want to

1269. be fruitful if we want

  1270. to be productive we

1271. must abide in Jesus in

1272. his words in his love

  1273. and his joy.

1274. At the end of the day

  1275. there aren't seven

  1276. habits of highly

  1277. effective people as

  1278. helpful as that book

  1279. is there's only one

  1280. that really counts.

1281. I'm the true vine Jesus

  1282. says abide in me.

  1283. Let's pray.

  1284. Our Father send your

  1285. spirit that we might

  1286. abide in you and

  1287. abide in your son.

1288. And Lord cause us to

1289. be a people in this

1290. day in our time in our

  1291. city that bear much

1292. fruit for the glory of

  1293. your good and holy

  1294. name.

1295. Lord help us to slow

  1296. down that we might

  1297. abide in you.

  1298. Help us to remember

1299. your love and your joy

  1300. would it flow through

1301. us we pray in Christ's

  1302. name.

  1303. Amen.

  1304. Amen.
