  1. Good morning, church.

  2. It's good to see you all.

  3. If you're on the live stream, we're glad you joined as well.

  4. Our sermon text today starts in John chapter 15, verse 18.

    John 15:18

  5. And we'll go up to the first half of verse 4 in chapter 16.

  6. If you're here in the sanctuary, that's page 848 in the Pew Bible.

  7. You can follow along there.

  8. Today's text is actually a good reminder that the chapter and verse divisions of our Bibles

  9. were added much later to the text.

  10. And sometimes that means the chapter breaks don't always capture the units of thought perfectly.

  11. So that's why we're kind of looking at the end of 15 and the beginning of John 16.

  12. Well, let me pray for us, and then I'll read.

  13. Let's pray together.

  14. Our Father in heaven, as we have just sung, we humble ourselves before you, and we wait on you.

  15. God, we wait on you because we know that in our own strength and in our own wisdom,

  16. God, we can truly do nothing apart from you.

  17. So we ask for your spirit to come and to illuminate your word once again,

  18. as you have done throughout the ages,

  19. that you would be moving and speaking to us through the passage we read

  20. and through the words that I share.

  21. God, raise us up, we pray, and strengthen us for the mission that you have for us to glorify you and your Son.

  22. Pray this in Jesus' name and in the power of the Spirit.

  23. Amen.

  24. All right, so remember, these are the words of Jesus to the apostles on the night before he was arrested

  25. in the midst of what we call the farewell discourse.

  26. So, John chapter 15, verse 18.

    John 15:18

  27. Jesus says,

  28. Remember the word that I said to you,

  29. A servant is not greater than his master.

  30. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

  31. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

  32. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name,

  33. because they do not know him who sent me.

  34. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin,

  35. but now they have no excuse for their sin.

  36. Whoever hates me hates my Father also.

  37. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did,

  38. they would not be guilty of sin.

  39. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

  40. But the word that is written in their law must be fulfilled.

  41. They hated me without a cause.

  42. But when the Helper comes,

  43. whom I will send to you from the Father,

  44. the Spirit of truth,

  45. who proceeds from the Father,

  46. he will bear witness about me.

  47. And you also will bear witness,

  48. because you have been with me from the beginning.

  49. I've said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.

  50. They will put you out of the synagogues.

  51. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you

  52. will think he's offering a service to God.

  53. And they will do these things,

  54. because they have not known the Father,

  55. nor me.

  56. But I have said these things to you,

  57. that when their hour comes,

  58. you may remember that I told them to you.

  59. Well, so not long ago,

  60. there was a popular book series

  61. called The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook.

  62. Do you remember those books?

  63. The idea of this series was that

  64. they would describe just terrible events.

  65. Earthquakes, shark attacks, alien invasions.

  66. And the book would offer sort of illustrated instructions

  67. on how to survive that worst case scenario.

  68. So for example, they made a parenting edition.

  69. And one of the chapters was

  70. how to deal with a screaming baby on an airplane,

  71. which kind of feels like a worst case scenario,

  72. sometimes for parents.

  73. And here are the instructions.

  74. First, make highly visible efforts to quiet your child.

  75. Two, create confusion and distraction.

  76. Three, do not panic if your child will still not calm down.

  77. Four, use the laboratory.

  78. Five, bribe fellow passengers for forgiveness.

  79. Six, and last, remember and remind yourself

  80. that you will never see these people again.

  81. But on a serious note,

  82. in the life of faith,

  83. as followers of Jesus,

  84. what is the worst case scenario?

  85. When things get hard,

  86. when opposition comes,

  87. what's the worst thing that can happen?

  88. Near the end of our passage,

  89. Jesus says,

  90. I've said all these things to you

  91. to keep you from falling away.

  92. According to Jesus,

  93. the worst case scenario for his followers

  94. in trial, in hardship,

  95. isn't a loss of reputation.

  96. The worst case scenario

  97. isn't ridicule or rejection.

  98. The worst case scenario

  99. isn't even death.

  100. The worst case scenario

  101. for Jesus for us

  102. is falling away.

  103. That is,

  104. departing the faith,

  105. no longer holding to Jesus as Lord,

  106. walking away

  107. from the only

  108. source of eternal life.

  109. The worst case scenario

  110. is falling away.

  111. Now remember,

  112. in this part of John's gospel,

  113. Jesus is preparing the disciples

  114. for his upcoming departure

  115. through the cross

  116. and for their upcoming mission

  117. through the Holy Spirit.

  118. And in the first half of John 15,

  119. that mission is described

  120. as bearing fruit in love

  121. by abiding in Jesus.

  122. This kingdom community

  123. rooted and connected

  124. to Jesus,

  125. the true vine,

  126. will be a community

  127. of missional love,

  128. drawing men and women

  129. into a relationship

  130. with God in Christ.

  131. But the question arises,

  132. how will the world

  133. respond to this community?

  134. How will the world

  135. respond to this community

  136. that abides in Jesus

  137. as the true vine,

  138. that holds to him

  139. as the only

  140. and true source of life,

  141. as the only and true God?

  142. Well, Jesus is clear.

  143. As the mission goes forth,

  144. there will be opposition.

  145. And when faced

  146. with that opposition,

  147. we will face

  148. the worst case scenario.

  149. We will be tempted

  150. to fall away.

  151. So Jesus tells us

  152. three things

  153. in this passage

  154. so that we might not

  155. fall away

  156. when opposition comes.

  157. As our loving shepherd,

  158. he prepares the apostles

  159. and us

  160. to stand firm

  161. to not fall away

  162. when opposition comes.

  163. And the three things

  164. that Jesus tells us here

  165. are this.

  166. He says,

  167. first,

  168. the world's hatred

  169. is inevitable.

  170. But second,

  171. the Spirit's ministry

  172. among you

  173. is countercultural.

  174. And then third,

  175. he says,

  176. my word,

  177. the word of Jesus

  178. is reliable.

  179. So we're going to look

  180. at those three things.

  181. So first,

  182. Jesus says to the apostles

  183. and to us,

  184. don't fall away.

  185. The world's hatred

  186. is inevitable.

  187. Now we see this

  188. in verses 18 through 25.

  189. Now in any relationship,

  190. it's important

  191. to have the right

  192. expectations, right?

  193. When you're preparing

  194. to take a new job,

  195. it's good to clarify

  196. the expectations

  197. with your employer

  198. to talk through

  199. your job description

  200. to get on the same page.

  201. When you're preparing

  202. for marriage,

  203. it's really good

  204. to clarify your expectations

  205. with your future spouse.

  206. And some of these,

  207. you don't even realize

  208. you have

  209. until conflicts come, right?

  210. Well, I thought you

  211. were going to do the dishes.

  212. Well, I thought you

  213. were going to pick up the kids.

  214. Oh, I thought we'd always

  215. live in the city.

  216. But in the same way,

  217. as followers of Jesus

  218. on mission,

  219. we have to get

  220. clear expectations

  221. on our relationship

  222. with the world.

  223. Now what does Jesus mean

  224. by the world

  225. here in John's Gospel?

  226. Well, the world

  227. doesn't mean

  228. the sort of whole

  229. created order,

  230. what we would call

  231. the natural world.

  232. Rather, the world

  233. in John's Gospel

  234. is a somewhat

  235. technical term

  236. referring to human society,

  237. human culture,

  238. running and operating

  239. without any reference

  240. to the true God.

  241. The world

  242. in John's Gospel

  243. is the human world

  244. in rebellion

  245. to its true God.

  246. Human culture

  247. and society

  248. arranged and lived

  249. according to the idols

  250. of its own choosing.

  251. Now,

  252. what should the church

  253. expect

  254. in its relationship

  255. to the world?

  256. Well, at one point,

  257. Jesus says to his followers

  258. in Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  259. for example,

  260. that you're going to be

  261. salt and light

  262. in the world

  263. and people will see

  264. your good deeds

  265. and glorify

  266. your Father in heaven.

  267. So on the one hand,

  268. if the church

  269. is truly being the church,

  270. there will be times

  271. when the culture

  272. that we find ourselves in

  273. will have to admit

  274. that there's something

  275. there to admire.

  276. After all,

  277. Jesus just said

  278. in John chapter 13,

    John 13 chapter mention

  279. by this,

  280. all people will know

  281. you are my disciples

  282. if you love one another.

  283. So in every culture,

  284. there'll be some things

  285. about the church

  286. that are admired.

  287. But Jesus makes it

  288. crystal clear here

  289. that that can't be

  290. our only expectation.

  291. At the same time,

  292. Jesus says,

  293. the world's also

  294. going to hate you.

  295. Verse 18 begins by saying,

  296. if the world hates you.

  297. Now,

  298. that sounds somewhat

  299. conditional, right?

  300. Sometimes we'll be hated,

  301. sometimes not.

  302. But then at the end

  303. of the very next verse,

  304. we realize that what

  305. Jesus is saying

  306. isn't that the world's

  307. hatred is conditional,

  308. it's actually inevitable.

  309. Therefore,

  310. verse 19 says,

  311. the world hates you.

  312. And as Jesus says here,

  313. we will be hated

  314. in the same ways

  315. that Jesus was hated

  316. by the world.

  317. A servant is not

  318. above his master.

  319. Jesus was misunderstood

  320. during his ministry.

  321. And so at times

  322. will we be as a church.

  323. Jesus was called crazy

  324. and out of his mind

  325. more than once.

  326. So at times will we be

  327. as we faithfully

  328. follow Jesus.

  329. Jesus was rejected

  330. and ridiculed

  331. by his family,

  332. his neighbors,

  333. his friends.

  334. And so at times

  335. will we be.

  336. Jesus was called

  337. an enemy of the people,

  338. bad for society.

  339. So at times

  340. has and will the church.

  341. Jesus was falsely accused,

  342. falsely condemned.

  343. He was physically beaten,

  344. tortured,

  345. and shamefully executed.

  346. The world hated Jesus

  347. in all these ways.

  348. And so the world

  349. will hate his followers.

  350. in all those ways.

  351. Even today,

  352. there are Christians

  353. being put to death

  354. for their faithful allegiance

  355. to Jesus.

  356. And whereas you or I

  357. may not face persecution

  358. like that,

  359. our brothers and sisters

  360. in many parts of the world

  361. are.

  362. And we must be praying

  363. for them.

  364. But what Jesus is saying here

  365. doesn't just apply

  366. to our brothers and sisters

  367. in other parts of the world,

  368. but it applies to us too.

  369. Don't be surprised

  370. if the world,

  371. yes,

  372. hates you,

  373. rejects you,

  374. ridicules you,

  375. misunderstands you,

  376. excludes you,

  377. penalizes you,

  378. ignores you,

  379. even condemns you.

  380. The world's hatred

  381. is inevitable.

  382. But why?

  383. Why is it inevitable?

  384. Well, Jesus answers

  385. that question too.

  386. And the answer

  387. has two parts.

  388. On the one hand,

  389. the world will hate us

  390. because we don't belong

  391. to the world anymore.

  392. Look at verse 19.

  393. Jesus says,

  394. Friends,

  395. what does it mean

  396. to be the church?

  397. It means to experience

  398. the free grace

  399. of Jesus' choosing love,

  400. setting his love on you,

  401. freeing you from sin,

  402. bringing you into

  403. a whole new kingdom

  404. where he is king.

  405. Being the church

  406. means being a new

  407. community of love

  408. right in the midst

  409. of the old.

  410. And that means

  411. we're not of

  412. the world anymore.

  413. We don't march

  414. to the same drummer,

  415. we don't bow

  416. to the same idols,

  417. we don't live

  418. for the same goals,

  419. and in doing so,

  420. we're salt and light

  421. to the world,

  422. as Jesus says.

  423. But,

  424. it's a bit like

  425. a heart transplant.

  426. You know,

  427. when a surgeon performs

  428. a heart transplant,

  429. this whole new organ

  430. is being placed

  431. into the body's system,

  432. right?

  433. And that organ

  434. is being put

  435. into that system

  436. to bring life

  437. and health

  438. and to keep

  439. the thing going.

  440. But the reality is

  441. that the old system

  442. doesn't always accept

  443. the new heart.

  444. Sometimes the body

  445. will turn against

  446. the new organ

  447. and reject it

  448. and attack it

  449. as different and alien.

  450. And it's the same way

  451. with the church

  452. and the world.

  453. The church is a whole

  454. new thing

  455. in the middle of the world

  456. to bring life

  457. to the world,

  458. but it's not of the world,

  459. and the world

  460. constantly rejects it.

  461. We live for a different king

  462. and a different kingdom.

  463. But now,

  464. here's the really surprising thing

  465. about what Jesus

  466. is saying here.

  467. When you think of

  468. the world,

  469. society arranged

  470. without reference

  471. to the true God,

  472. who or what

  473. comes to mind for you?

  474. Now,

  475. it's initially easy

  476. to sort of think about,

  477. well,

  478. you know,

  479. it's those people

  480. who just reject God

  481. altogether.

  482. It's the really obvious,

  483. openly godless folks

  484. out there,

  485. like I used to be.

  486. But consider,

  487. look at chapter 16,

  488. verse 2,

  489. where Jesus says

  490. about the world,

  491. they will put you

  492. out of the synagogues.

  493. Indeed,

  494. the hour is coming

  495. when whoever kills you

  496. will think he's offering

  497. service to God.

  498. So you see,

  499. it's not just

  500. openly irreligious people

  501. who constitute the world.

  502. it can also be

  503. really,

  504. really religious people too.

  505. The ones in the synagogues

  506. who think they're offering

  507. a service to God.

  508. You see,

  509. what this means,

  510. friends,

  511. is that the world

  512. can sometimes wear

  513. a mask of relativism,

  514. but the world

  515. can also wear

  516. a mask of conservatism

  517. as well.

  518. And our king

  519. tells us to live lives

  520. that challenge the world

  521. in all of its forms.

  522. After all,

  523. as followers of Jesus,

  524. we care about the oppressed

  525. and the poor

  526. and the fatherless

  527. and the widow.

  528. We care about injustice

  529. and oppression

  530. and wrong,

  531. but that doesn't make

  532. Christians quote-unquote

  533. progressives,

  534. as the world likes to say.

  535. We also care about

  536. the unborn

  537. and family

  538. and marriage

  539. and religious liberty,

  540. but that doesn't make

  541. Christians conservatives,

  542. as our culture likes to say.

  543. Following King Jesus

  544. means that we won't

  545. fit easily

  546. into any of the world's molds.

  547. And that means

  548. Christians will be

  549. disliked

  550. and even hated

  551. at times

  552. by so-called

  553. progressives

  554. and conservatives.

  555. After all,

  556. the Roman establishment

  557. and the Jewish

  558. religious establishment

  559. both had their reasons

  560. for wanting Jesus

  561. out of the way.

  562. And it will be

  563. the same for us too.

  564. We are not

  565. of the world

  566. in any of its forms.

  567. The world rejects Jesus,

  568. so it will at times

  569. reject us too.

  570. But a little deeper,

  571. why does the world

  572. reject Jesus?

  573. Well, that's what

  574. verses 21 through 25

  575. are all about.

  576. Look at verse 21,

  577. but all these things

  578. they will do to you

  579. on account of my name,

  580. because they do not

  581. know him who sent me.

  582. Jesus says here

  583. that his words,

  584. in verse 22,

  585. and his works,

  586. in verse 24,

  587. gave abundant evidence

  588. of his divine identity

  589. and his saving power.

  590. His words and his works

  591. gave so much evidence

  592. that now

  593. there's no excuse.

  594. No one can plead ignorance.

  595. That's what Jesus means

  596. when he says,

  597. if I hadn't done these things,

  598. they would not be guilty of sin.

  599. That's a way of saying

  600. they now have

  601. all the evidence they need,

  602. and yet they still reject it.

  603. Why?

  604. Well, Jesus says,

  605. because they're blind

  606. to the reality

  607. of the true God.

  608. So much so that,

  609. like David said in Psalm 69,

  610. so Jesus can say,

  611. they hated me

  612. without a cause.

  613. The world rejects Jesus

  614. and then rejects

  615. the followers of Jesus

  616. not because of some kind of fault

  617. or lack of evidence in Christ,

  618. but because they're blinded

  619. and trapped by sin's power,

  620. just like all of us were

  621. before God's grace came to us.

  622. Now, sin, you see,

  623. at its deepest level

  624. isn't just sort of

  625. particular actions

  626. that break God's law.

  627. Sometimes I like to think about sin

  628. as sort of this giant,

  629. false narrative

  630. that captures our minds

  631. and imaginations.

  632. It's this giant,

  633. false narrative

  634. that says,

  635. your happiness is found

  636. by putting yourself

  637. in the center of your story

  638. or by putting your family

  639. in the center of your story

  640. or by putting your nation

  641. in the center of your story.

  642. Sin is like this giant,

  643. false narrative

  644. that tells us

  645. life should be lived

  646. for anything other

  647. than the glory

  648. of the triune God,

  649. and it shapes everything

  650. we think and see

  651. and love and do.

  652. And we buy into

  653. that false narrative

  654. so deeply

  655. that our eyes are closed

  656. to the reality of God

  657. and the reality of Christ.

  658. And that's why

  659. the world's hatred

  660. is so inevitable,

  661. because sin's power

  662. has been rampant

  663. in our world.

  664. The world's hatred

  665. is inevitable,

  666. and Jesus tells us this,

  667. so we might not fall away.

  668. So, fellow Christian,

  669. let me ask,

  670. what are your expectations?

  671. Now, it is very natural

  672. to want to be liked,

  673. to want to have a good report

  674. with those around us.

  675. And praise God,

  676. many of us do.

  677. But as a follower of Jesus,

  678. do you expect the world

  679. around you

  680. to always like you,

  681. to always approve of you,

  682. to always affirm you?

  683. If so,

  684. then you are in

  685. for a rude awakening.

  686. Like a foolish employee

  687. who never read

  688. the job description,

  689. or the foolish husband

  690. who never talked

  691. to his wife

  692. about what sort of life

  693. they wanted to live together.

  694. If we as Christians

  695. always expect

  696. the world around us

  697. to like us,

  698. we are headed

  699. for a painful surprise.

  700. So, brothers and sisters,

  701. don't set your heart,

  702. your trust,

  703. on the approval

  704. of the world.

  705. If you're being true

  706. to Jesus,

  707. then you'll never

  708. always get it.

  709. But here's the good news.

  710. If you're being true

  711. to Jesus,

  712. then you won't ever

  713. really need it.

  714. Because what does

  715. the gospel say?

  716. The gospel says

  717. that even if

  718. the entire world

  719. were to rise up

  720. in hatred against you,

  721. you have

  722. the only approval

  723. that really matters.

  724. The God

  725. who made you

  726. and who made

  727. everything that we see.

  728. The God

  729. whose glory

  730. can satisfy

  731. your soul forever.

  732. The God

  733. who is so

  734. unbelievably holy

  735. that his presence

  736. would melt

  737. the earth.

  738. The God

  739. who is so

  740. unbelievably loving

  741. that his presence

  742. would melt

  743. even the hardest heart.

  744. That God,

  745. the triune God

  746. known in Jesus,

  747. that God

  748. in the gospel

  749. has set

  750. his favor on you.

  751. Even though

  752. you and I

  753. have rejected him.

  754. Even though you and I

  755. have lived without

  756. any reference to him.

  757. Even though we've

  758. bought in

  759. to the giant false narrative

  760. that life can be lived

  761. for something other than God.

  762. Even so,

  763. God

  764. has let

  765. his full

  766. hatred

  767. of human sin

  768. and evil

  769. and injustice,

  770. including your and my sin

  771. and evil and injustice,

  772. God has let

  773. his full

  774. hatred of sin

  775. fall

  776. on his own

  777. person

  778. in our place.

  779. God took on

  780. our human nature

  781. in Jesus

  782. to bear

  783. the just

  784. hatred of our sin

  785. so that

  786. all who

  787. turn from sin

  788. and trust in Christ

  789. might have

  790. full favor

  791. with God

  792. completely free

  793. of charge.

  794. And that means

  795. if we've placed

  796. our trust in Jesus,

  797. if we become

  798. his follower,

  799. if we've joined

  800. his family,

  801. if we become

  802. a part of the church,

  803. then we don't need

  804. the world's approval.

  805. Because we have

  806. an approval

  807. that nothing

  808. can compare to.

  809. I mean,

  810. think about it.

  811. If you're at work

  812. this summer

  813. and the summer

  814. intern

  815. comes to you

  816. and says,

  817. man,

  818. well done.

  819. It's great to have you

  820. around here.

  821. You will think to yourself,

  822. well,

  823. that's nice.

  824. But their opinion

  825. doesn't really matter

  826. all that much,

  827. does it?

  828. I mean,

  829. by the end of the summer,

  830. the summer intern

  831. isn't even going to be

  832. around anymore.

  833. Who cares what they think?

  834. It's nice to be liked,

  835. but...

  836. But,

  837. if the founder

  838. of the company

  839. comes to your office

  840. after a big presentation

  841. and says,

  842. well done.

  843. It's good to have you

  844. on the team.

  845. Well,

  846. that means something,

  847. doesn't it?

  848. But friends,

  849. consider,

  850. in Christ,

  851. we have an approval

  852. infinitely greater.

  853. It's so great

  854. that nothing in this world

  855. can shake it.

  856. The CEO

  857. of the universe

  858. has called you

  859. into his office

  860. and said,

  861. well done.

  862. It's good to have you here.

  863. So even though

  864. the world's hatred

  865. is inevitable,

  866. friends,

  867. don't fall away.

  868. That's Jesus'

  869. first point.

  870. But I think that raises

  871. a natural question,

  872. right?

  873. How should we respond

  874. to the world's hatred?

  875. If we expect it

  876. as inevitable

  877. and if we don't fall away,

  878. how should we respond?

  879. How should we react?

  880. Now,

  881. if we're honest,

  882. I think too often

  883. in those moments,

  884. it's like

  885. our fight

  886. or flight

  887. response kicks in.

  888. When the world hates us,

  889. we either return the favor

  890. and hate them back,

  891. we fight,

  892. or

  893. when the world hates us,

  894. we just withdraw

  895. and we quietly go away.

  896. That's flight.

  897. But you know,

  898. neither response

  899. is what Jesus calls us to.

  900. And this brings us

  901. to our second big point

  902. of the passage.

  903. The world's hatred

  904. is inevitable,

  905. yes,

  906. but Jesus says to us,

  907. the Spirit's ministry

  908. in us

  909. is counter-cultural.

  910. Look again at verses

  911. 26 through 27.

  912. Jesus says,

  913. but when the helper comes,

  914. whom I will send to you

  915. from the Father,

  916. the Spirit of truth,

  917. who proceeds from the Father,

  918. he will bear witness

  919. about me.

  920. And you also

  921. will bear witness

  922. because you've been with me

  923. from the beginning.

  924. So you see,

  925. in the face of opposition,

  926. we can respond

  927. with neither fight

  928. nor flight.

  929. Rather,

  930. the Spirit empowers us

  931. to do something

  932. very counter-cultural

  933. and very different.

  934. He empowers us

  935. to bear witness.

  936. We don't return

  937. evil for evil.

  938. We don't retreat

  939. into the safety

  940. of a holy huddle.

  941. No,

  942. we bear witness

  943. to Christ.

  944. Now,

  945. what does it mean

  946. to bear witness?

  947. Well,

  948. it's kind of like

  949. giving a testimony

  950. in a court case.

  951. Jesus is speaking

  952. to the apostles

  953. here in John 15.

  954. And as he says,

  955. they've been with him

  956. from the beginning.

  957. So now,

  958. as they enter out

  959. into the courtroom

  960. of the world,

  961. they can give

  962. their eyewitness testimony

  963. to all that Jesus is

  964. and all that Jesus has done.

  965. But you know,

  966. in a derivative way,

  967. in a related way,

  968. today,

  969. we as followers of Jesus

  970. still bear witness.

  971. We stand on the eyewitness testimony

  972. of the apostles.

  973. We are empowered

  974. by the same Holy Spirit.

  975. And we have our own

  976. first-hand experience

  977. to share

  978. of the saving love of Christ.

  979. And so we can speak

  980. about who Jesus is

  981. and what he's done.

  982. Now,

  983. as the church,

  984. I think we need to pray

  985. to become more adept

  986. at turning

  987. cultural conversations

  988. into witness-bearing

  989. gospel conversations.

  990. Too often,

  991. we get mired

  992. in sort of the cultural issues

  993. of the day

  994. without really

  995. bearing witness.

  996. Now,

  997. how do we do that?

  998. Well,

  999. let me just offer

  1000. some simple suggestions.

  1001. I think witness-bearing

  1002. in this way

  1003. requires

  1004. that we pray,

  1005. that we ask,

  1006. that we listen,

  1007. and that we speak.

  1008. So first,

  1009. we pray.

1010. We pray that the Holy Spirit

  1011. will be at work

1012. in us and through us

  1013. and in and through

  1014. those around us

  1015. to whom the Lord

  1016. has sent us.

  1017. In a couple weeks,

1018. we're going to dive more

  1019. into the ministry

  1020. of the Holy Spirit's

  1021. work in the world

1022. in the rest of John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

1023. So we'll get more into that.

  1024. But first,

1025. we have to be praying.

  1026. And then second,

  1027. we ask.

  1028. Too often,

  1029. as Christians,

  1030. we're just talking.

1031. But we need to ask.

  1032. Ask open-ended questions

  1033. to the people

1034. that God has put in your life.

1035. Show genuine interest in them.

  1036. What are they into?

  1037. What motivates them?

1038. What are they afraid of?

1039. What are they hoping for in life?

  1040. Ask.

  1041. Get to know them.

  1042. And then,

  1043. we listen.

1044. Don't be quick to speak.

  1045. Be quick to listen.

  1046. And then,

1047. don't be afraid to ask

  1048. another question.

1049. We're really bad at this

  1050. culturally, right?

  1051. Oftentimes,

  1052. we ask a question

  1053. only to sort of

  1054. buy us enough time

  1055. to figure out

  1056. what we can say,

  1057. right?

  1058. But no, friends.

  1059. Ask and listen.

  1060. And then listen

  1061. listen some more.

  1062. Really hear

  1063. the people around you.

  1064. It's such a profound way

  1065. to actually love someone,

1066. to actually listen to them.

  1067. But after we've prayed

  1068. and asked

  1069. and listened

  1070. and listened some more,

  1071. finally,

  1072. we speak.

  1073. And don't be afraid

  1074. in your speaking,

  1075. friends,

  1076. to start

  1077. at square one

  1078. of the gospel.

  1079. that there's a God

  1080. who created us

  1081. and who loves us.

  1082. And all our life

1083. is meant to be lived

  1084. in fellowship with him.

  1085. And that's what flourishing

  1086. really means.

  1087. But none of us

  1088. have lived that way.

  1089. And there's a great chasm

  1090. that's opened up

  1091. between us and God.

1092. We've turned away from him

1093. and we try to live

  1094. our own way.

1095. And that's what the Bible

  1096. calls sin.

  1097. And that sin

  1098. has resulted in death.

  1099. But rather than

  1100. leave us there,

1101. God has made a way

  1102. to forgive our sin

  1103. and reconcile us

  1104. to himself

  1105. through his son.

  1106. And Jesus

  1107. lived a perfect life

  1108. and died the death

  1109. that we deserve

1110. so we could be reconciled

1111. to God on the basis

  1112. of what he did

1113. and not on the basis

  1114. of what we do.

  1115. So then now

  1116. when we admit

  1117. that we're sinners

1118. and we trust in Jesus

  1119. alone to rescue us,

  1120. we're given a whole new

  1121. status and fellowship

  1122. with God

  1123. and we're given

  1124. a whole new power

  1125. by his spirit

  1126. to love God

  1127. and love each other.

  1128. So in life,

  1129. we follow Jesus

  1130. as our Lord,

  1131. gladly conforming

  1132. all of our life

  1133. to him,

  1134. because he made us

  1135. and because he knows

  1136. what's best for us.

  1137. And after all,

1138. if he died for us,

1139. then surely he loves us.

  1140. Now here's the thing.

  1141. You're never going

1142. to be able to have

  1143. that conversation

  1144. with everybody

  1145. you interact with,

  1146. right?

  1147. But you can have

  1148. parts of that conversation.

  1149. You can start

  1150. at square one

  1151. and just start

  1152. sowing seeds.

  1153. Witness bearing

  1154. isn't easy.

  1155. It's easier to kick

  1156. into fight or flight,

  1157. right?

  1158. But listen to what

1159. Paul says in Romans 12.

  1160. Paul says,

  1161. bless those who

  1162. persecute you.

  1163. Bless and do not

  1164. curse them.

  1165. Repay no one evil

  1166. for evil,

  1167. but give thought

1168. to do what is honorable

1169. in the sight of all.

  1170. If possible,

1171. so far as depends on you,

  1172. live peaceably with all.

  1173. Beloved,

  1174. never avenge yourselves,

1175. but leave it to the wrath

  1176. of God,

  1177. for it is written,

  1178. vengeance is mine,

  1179. I will repay,

  1180. says the Lord.

  1181. To the contrary,

1182. if your enemy is hungry,

  1183. feed him.

  1184. If he's thirsty,

  1185. give him something

  1186. to drink,

  1187. for by so doing,

  1188. you'll eat burning coals

  1189. on his head.

  1190. Do not be overcome

  1191. by evil,

  1192. but overcome evil

  1193. with good.

  1194. And Jesus promises us

  1195. that the Holy Spirit

  1196. will be with us,

  1197. empowering us

  1198. for this countercultural work.

  1199. But lastly,

  1200. Jesus tells us

1201. not just that the world's

  1202. hatred is inevitable,

1203. not just that the Spirit's

  1204. ministry among us

  1205. is countercultural,

  1206. but finally,

  1207. that his word

  1208. is reliable.

  1209. Our sermon text

  1210. ends with Jesus

  1211. saying this,

  1212. but I've said

  1213. these things to you

  1214. that when their hour

  1215. comes,

  1216. you may remember

  1217. that I told them

  1218. to you.

  1219. But what difference

  1220. does that make?

  1221. You know,

1222. we can see how having

  1223. the right expectations

  1224. about the world,

  1225. that's easy to see

  1226. how that helps us

  1227. not now fall away,

  1228. knowing how to respond

  1229. through the Spirit's

  1230. witness-bearing ministry

  1231. that helps us not

  1232. to fall into fight

  1233. or flight.

  1234. But how does Jesus

  1235. telling us all this

  1236. beforehand help us

  1237. not fall away

  1238. when the opposition comes?

  1239. Well,

1240. what Jesus is showing us here

  1241. is that no matter

  1242. what the world

  1243. throws at us,

  1244. no matter how painful

  1245. the opposition gets,

  1246. no matter how costly

  1247. it becomes

  1248. to follow Jesus,

  1249. no matter what comes,

  1250. Jesus is still

  1251. the King.

  1252. His word

  1253. is still sovereign.

  1254. His plan

  1255. is still going forth.

  1256. Not even the world's

  1257. hatred

  1258. can thwart

  1259. the sovereign,

  1260. gracious plan

  1261. of King Jesus

  1262. for the Kingdom

  1263. to come

  1264. and for His will

  1265. to be done

  1266. on earth

1267. as it is in heaven.

  1268. Remember,

  1269. when opposition comes,

  1270. this is exactly

  1271. what He said

  1272. would happen.

1273. At the end of John 16,

  1274. Jesus will say,

  1275. in the world

  1276. you will have tribulation,

  1277. but take heart,

  1278. I have overcome

  1279. the world.

  1280. You know,

  1281. when Jesus went

  1282. to the cross,

  1283. it looked like defeat,

  1284. didn't it?

  1285. It looked like

  1286. the world had won.

  1287. It looked like

  1288. the grand

  1289. false narrative

  1290. of sin

  1291. just might be true

  1292. after all.

  1293. But when Christ

  1294. rose from the grave

  1295. on Sunday morning,

  1296. it all became clear.

  1297. the cross wasn't

  1298. our Lord's

  1299. greatest defeat.

  1300. It was His

  1301. greatest victory.

  1302. He had overcome

  1303. the world.

  1304. He had swallowed up

  1305. all the evil,

  1306. pain, and death.

1307. He had taken the worst

1308. the world had to give.

  1309. And in return,

  1310. He gave us life.

1311. And if we join Him

  1312. in His suffering,

  1313. we will join Him

  1314. in His glory.

  1315. Remember again,

  1316. the words of the

  1317. Apostle Paul

  1318. in Romans 8,

  1319. for I consider,

  1320. he says,

  1321. that the sufferings

  1322. of this present time

  1323. are not worth

  1324. comparing with the glory

1325. that is to be revealed

  1326. to us.

  1327. Jesus' word,

  1328. friends,

  1329. is reliable.

  1330. That word,

  1331. above all

  1332. earthly powers,

  1333. no thanks to them

  1334. abideth.

  1335. The Spirit

  1336. and the gifts

  1337. are ours

  1338. through Him

  1339. who with us

  1340. sideth.

  1341. let goods

  1342. and kindred go.

  1343. This mortal life

  1344. also,

  1345. the body

  1346. they may kill.

  1347. God's truth

  1348. abides still.

  1349. His kingdom

  1350. is forever.

  1351. Amen.

  1352. You see,

  1353. the world's hatred

  1354. isn't the worst thing

1355. that can happen to you,

  1356. friends.

  1357. Losing worldly goods

  1358. and wealth,

  1359. that's not the worst

  1360. case scenario.

  1361. Losing kindred,

  1362. friends,

  1363. and family,

  1364. losing even your life,

  1365. it isn't the worst

  1366. case scenario.

  1367. Having God

  1368. in Christ,

  1369. never losing Him,

  1370. that's all that

  1371. really matters

  1372. because His kingdom

  1373. is forever.

  1374. And Jesus

  1375. has said these things

  1376. to us

  1377. to keep us

  1378. from falling away.

1379. The world may hate us,

  1380. but the Spirit

  1381. will empower us,

1382. and the Word of Christ

  1383. will sustain us

  1384. as we go out

  1385. on this mission

  1386. of love

1387. that He sent us on.

  1388. Let's pray together.

  1389. Lord Jesus,

1390. we pray for a fresh

  1391. filling of Your Spirit

  1392. this morning.

  1393. Lord,

  1394. too often

  1395. we are tempted

  1396. to just retreat

  1397. when You call us

  1398. to advance.

  1399. Lord,

  1400. too often

  1401. we are tempted

  1402. to wage war

  1403. with worldly weapons

  1404. and to become

  1405. like our old selves

  1406. again.

  1407. So, Lord,

  1408. we need You

1409. and we need Your Spirit

  1410. to empower us

  1411. to be gracious,

  1412. to be bold,

  1413. to bear witness,

  1414. and to hold fast.

  1415. Jesus,

  1416. thank You

  1417. that You complete

  1418. the good work

  1419. that You start

1420. and we can rely on You.

1421. We pray this in Your name.

  1422. Amen.
