  1. Good morning, church.

  2. Would you turn with me to John chapter 16?

    John 16 chapter mention

  3. That is page 848 in the Pew Bible.

  4. We're going to pick up this morning in the second half of verse 4 of chapter 16 and read

  5. through verse 11 for our sermon this morning.

  6. As we turn there, let me pray for us.

  7. Let's pray together.

  8. God, we do need you, and we need you every hour, and we need you every moment.

  9. God, you are the one who supports and sustains.

  10. Lord, it is in you that we live and move and have our being.

  11. God, thank you that you don't remain far off, but you indeed reveal yourself to us and you

  12. speak to us.

  13. So speak to us now, Father, as we come to your word.

  14. Help us by your Holy Spirit to have ears to hear, and help us have eyes to see Jesus exalted

  15. and glorious as our true King.

  16. We pray this in His name.

  17. Amen.

  18. Amen.

  19. All right, John 16, starting in the second half of verse 4.

  20. Let me read this for us.

  21. Jesus says to the apostles,

  22. I did not say these things to you from the beginning because I was with you, but now

  23. I am going to Him who sent me.

  24. And none of you asks me, where are you going?

  25. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

  26. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth.

  27. It is to your advantage that I go away.

  28. For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.

  29. But if I go, I will send Him to you.

  30. And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

  31. Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me.

  32. Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer.

  33. Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

  34. So in this part of John's gospel, remember, Jesus has been telling and preparing the apostles

  35. for their upcoming mission.

  36. And in the first half of John 15, right before this passage we just read,

  37. Jesus talks about there, in the first half of 15, He talks about bearing fruit.

  38. And then in the second half of John 15, He talks about bearing witness.

  39. So this would be the mission of the church.

  40. Fruit bearing and witness bearing.

  41. A life of love in deed and in word.

  42. But remember, all of this would happen in a context of what?

  43. In a context of resistance.

  44. Jesus says at the end of chapter 15, expect hostility from the world.

  45. But the church would not retreat from the hostile world.

  46. Rather, we would live out our distinct fruit bearing, witness bearing life right in the middle of it.

  47. Why?

  48. Well, because as we know from John's gospel that we've been studying for the last year,

  49. because God loves the world.

  50. And God sent His Son to save the world.

  51. And God has a purpose of redeeming a people from every tribe and tongue and nation.

  52. But, do you remember that scene from the Lord of the Rings?

  53. When Frodo and Sam, along with the rest of sort of their band,

  54. are traveling under the mountains through the ancient home of the dwarves,

  55. the mines of Moriah.

  56. Okay, I know I lost maybe like 30% of it.

  57. But stick with me on this one.

  58. Stick with me.

  59. And so they're down in the mountains and they're under and it's dark and it's deep.

  60. And then they come to this narrow pass, this sort of narrow stone bridge.

  61. And as they're about to cross and as they're about to make it out through the other side,

  62. this ancient evil creature comes out of the darkness.

  63. Durin's Bane, the Balrog.

  64. And suddenly all seems lost.

  65. But what happens?

  66. Well, Gandalf, their sort of great guide and teacher, stands between the fellowship and the monster.

  67. He fights the creature.

  68. The fellowship gets through.

  69. They escape.

  70. But at the last moment, Gandalf is taken by the creature, pulled down into the darkness.

  71. And his last words, at least in the first version of the movie are, do you remember?

  72. Run, you fools.

  73. In the book, he says, fly, you fools.

  74. And there's a great debate on the internet all about that.

  75. And you can waste a lot of time reading it.

  76. But as the characters come out, the other side, into the light of day, they're filled with sorrow.

  77. Why?

  78. Because now they're on their own.

  79. Because now they have to complete their mission without their guide, their protector, and their friend.

  80. Now they have to march into the face of hostility all alone.

  81. Now sometimes as a church we feel a bit like that, don't we?

  82. Jesus has given us a mission, but we stare out at what seems like an impossible task.

  83. Our friends and our neighbors seem so far from believing in Christ.

  84. Our love for one another seems to grow so cold at times.

  85. Given the obstacles ahead, given the opposition ahead, how will we ever complete the mission before us?

  86. How will we possibly bear fruit?

  87. How will we possibly bear witness?

  88. Especially when it seems like Jesus, our guide, our protector, our friend, isn't here with us.

  89. We know he's won the great battle, yes.

  90. He fought the great evil.

  91. We have been saved.

  92. We've come out the other side.

  93. But now, are we on our own to live out the mission he's given us?

  94. Well, this is where John 16 comes in.

  95. Jesus is assuring us here that his going away is actually a good thing.

  96. Because if he goes away, he will send the helper.

  97. Or as some translations say, the advocate.

  98. The one we know as the Holy Spirit.

  99. So we're not alone.

  100. Think about it.

  101. Before Jesus ascended to the Father, his work was not yet complete.

  102. But when Jesus ascended on high and took his seat at the right hand of God, enthroned as king forever,

  103. then redemption was accomplished once and for all.

  104. Then our mediator had put an anchor in heaven that could never be moved.

  105. And at long last, humanity could be reconciled to God.

  106. We have a high priest in heaven who intercedes for us.

  107. And at that moment, when the risen King Jesus ascended on high,

  108. then the Holy Spirit could come in fullness.

  109. That's what Jesus means when he says,

  110. unless I go away, the helper will not come to you.

  111. It's not as if sort of Jesus and the Spirit can't occupy the same space,

  112. like they're oil and water or something.

  113. No, Jesus is saying that the Spirit can't come in fullness until I go and complete the work.

  114. Now, it's been fun to sort of watch the construction happening around our church for the past few years, hasn't it?

  115. We used to be, if you're new, we used to be in the middle of a parking lot.

  116. But now our church is located right in the middle of a community, which is pretty awesome.

  117. But here's the thing about a project as big as this one that's happening around us.

  118. A project that big cannot start until the financing is in place, right?

  119. Until the funds have been secured.

  120. But once the funds are secured, then the construction crews can show up.

  121. Otherwise, you're going to have a lot of disgruntled construction workers waiting for their paychecks, right?

  122. Think of it like this.

  123. When Jesus died and rose again and ascended on high,

  124. he secured the funds to redeem everyone who would turn interest in him.

  125. So now the Holy Spirit, the helper, the advocate, the builder,

  126. can come in fullness and start building the church.

  127. When Jesus ascended, the work was complete and the Spirit could come.

  128. And now that the Spirit is here, what exactly does it mean?

  129. And that brings us really to the heart of the text before us today.

  130. The heart of the text today is the Holy Spirit's ministry to the world.

  131. As we seek to bear witness to the world, we're not alone.

  132. God, the Holy Spirit, is ultimately the one doing the work.

  133. He is the great evangelist.

  134. He's the one who changes hearts and brings true conversion.

  135. Jesus says he will convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment.

  136. That is, the Holy Spirit will shine a searching light upon human hearts.

  137. That's what the word convict means here.

  138. A light will be shown into our hearts.

  139. And what will be exposed is sin, righteousness, and judgment.

  140. In other words, the Holy Spirit is going to expose the problem

  141. and the solution and then the resolution.

  142. What's really wrong with us?

  143. What can make it right?

  144. And how it's all going to turn out?

  145. So let's look at each of these things briefly.

  146. First, verse 9,

  147. The Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning sin

  148. because they do not believe in me.

  149. You know, before we can understand the cure,

  150. we have to understand the problem, right?

  151. If I have a broken arm,

  152. getting a manicure isn't going to help much, right?

  153. It might make my broken arm look nice,

  154. but the arm is still going to be broken.

  155. You know, it's much the same with our spiritual state.

  156. Until we understand the problem,

  157. we can't really get the cure.

  158. But what is the problem?

  159. Well, the Bible calls the problem sin.

  160. But here's the thing.

  161. Most people, I think, would readily admit

  162. that they aren't perfect,

  163. that they make mistakes,

  164. that they even act selfishly at times.

  165. But that isn't what the Bible means by sin.

  166. Is sin merely breaking some rules from time to time?

  167. Is sin sort of not always being our best selves?

  168. Well, no.

  169. That's not the heart of it.

  170. At bottom, the reality of sin

  171. isn't merely breaking rules or not being perfect.

  172. The reality of sin is relational.

  173. It's personal.

  174. Notice, Jesus doesn't say,

  175. the Holy Spirit will convict you of sin

  176. because you didn't keep the rules.

  177. The Holy Spirit will convict you of sin,

  178. Jesus says,

  179. because they did not believe in me.

  180. Now, God's laws are good.

  181. God's laws are perfect.

  182. They are how life works best.

  183. And we should delight to keep them.

  184. But at the core,

  185. when the Holy Spirit shines his light into our hearts,

  186. what we see is something very grave.

  187. We see that we've lived our whole life

  188. personally ignoring

  189. or even rejecting the God who made us

  190. and the God who sustains us,

  191. the one in whom we live and move

  192. and have our being.

  193. Basically, we've lived our whole life saying,

  194. God, I don't think I need you

  195. and I don't want you.

  196. But imagine the situation that puts us in.

  197. It's only the strong branches of God's mercy

  198. that upholds us each second.

  199. And yet every day that goes by,

  200. we keep sawing the branch,

  201. acting as if we can live without him.

  202. And what if God were to give us what we want

  203. and actually release us?

  204. Jesus says in Matthew's gospel,

  205. to be fully removed from God's presence

  206. would be like exclusion or darkness or even fire.

  207. Exclusion from all that's good,

  208. darkness in our own vanity and selfishness,

  209. and even fire, fire of turmoil and shame.

  210. Friends, I wonder,

  211. have you ever felt the gravity

  212. of your state before God in your sin?

  213. Have you ever felt the lostness,

  214. the danger of not being right with God,

  215. your creator?

  216. If you've not felt a sense of that,

  217. then pray.

  218. Ask the Holy Spirit to awaken you

  219. to the reality of the spiritual problem

  220. so that you can find the cure.

  221. And if you have started to feel

  222. that sense of conviction of sin,

  223. then don't run away from it.

  224. Don't shut it down.

  225. If your arm is broken,

  226. the worst thing you can do

  227. is to keep telling yourself,

  228. it's fine, it's okay,

  229. I'll just think about something else.

  230. No, don't ignore the problem.

  231. Because if you're feeling the conviction of sin,

  232. then that's the work of the Holy Spirit

  233. in your life.

  234. But what's the solution?

  235. What's the solution?

  236. That brings us to the next verse.

  237. First, the Holy Spirit convicts us

  238. of the true nature of sin.

  239. Next, in verse 10,

  240. the Holy Spirit convicts us

  241. concerning righteousness,

  242. Jesus says,

  243. because I go to the Father

  244. and you will see me no longer.

  245. Okay, so what is the natural human response

  246. to our spiritual problem,

  247. to sin,

  248. especially when we see

  249. how grave it really is?

  250. Well, typically,

  251. I think we try,

  252. in response to that,

  253. to sort of bolster

  254. our own sense of righteousness.

  255. We catch a glimpse

  256. of how lost we are,

  257. of the danger of our spiritual state,

  258. of our deep flaws,

  259. and then we respond to it

  260. by trying to outweigh it

  261. with some good deeds, right?

  262. With righteousness.

  263. I think most of us operate

  264. with a very flawed notion

  265. that spiritually speaking,

  266. there's a scale.

  267. On the one side are our bad deeds,

  268. and on the other side

  269. are our good deeds.

  270. And the whole goal of life

  271. is to try to make our good deeds

  272. outweigh the bad deeds,

  273. and then we'll be okay.

  274. But when you stop and think about it,

  275. that is a very foolish notion,

  276. isn't it?

  277. Imagine that I've spent

  278. the last 20 years

  279. cheating on my taxes.

  280. That's not true.

  281. I think I have faithfully paid my taxes

  282. for the last 20 years,

  283. but imagine I haven't.

  284. But finally, I get caught,

  285. and I get dragged before a judge.

  286. And here's my defense.

  287. Well, judge,

  288. I know I've cheated on my taxes

  289. for the last 20 years,

  290. and I've stole thousands that I owe.

  291. But you know,

  292. I've been a really nice guy

  293. that whole time.

  294. I've done a lot of good things.

  295. I even gave some of that money,

  296. not all of it,

  297. I gave a little bit of it to charity.

  298. Doesn't that outweigh the bad?

  299. Well, we know the answer, right?

  300. No.

  301. No.

  302. The wrong is still there.

  303. Look, if you rob a bank,

  304. you're not going to be acquitted

  305. because later that same day

  306. you helped someone cross a street.

  307. There's not a scale.

  308. You see, as the Holy Spirit convicts us

  309. concerning the reality of our sin,

  310. He also convicts us

  311. of the emptiness

  312. of our righteousness.

  313. Because there's only one

  314. who is truly righteous.

  315. There was only one

  316. who never sinned.

  317. There was only one

  318. who always loved God

  319. with all His heart,

  320. soul, mind, and strength.

  321. There was only one

  322. who always loved

  323. His neighbor as Himself.

  324. There's only one

  325. who can enter

  326. into the very presence of God

  327. without fear

  328. of being cast out

  329. or condemned.

  330. And that one

  331. is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  332. What does Jesus say?

  333. The Holy Spirit convicts us

  334. concerning our righteousness

  335. because He says,

  336. I go to the Father

  337. and you'll see me no longer.

  338. When you come before God,

  339. what solution will you offer

  340. for the problem of your sin?

  341. Your righteousness?

  342. No.

  343. That solution

  344. will get you nowhere.

  345. But just think,

  346. what if there was

  347. a righteousness

  348. that could be yours?

  349. A righteousness so great

  350. that it would cover

  351. your many sins.

  352. A righteousness so great

  353. that it could heal

  354. your alienation from God.

  355. What if you could get

  356. a righteousness like that?

  357. When Jesus says,

  358. I go to the Father,

  359. He not only exposes

  360. the sham,

  361. the emptiness

  362. of our righteousness,

  363. but He provides

  364. the answer.

  365. He takes

  366. His perfect righteousness

  367. and presents it

  368. to the Father

  369. on our behalf.

  370. Now, how could that be?

  371. How could Christ's righteousness

  372. be credited to me?

  373. Because when we trust

  374. in Christ,

  375. that is,

  376. when we give up

  377. attempting to be right

  378. with God

  379. through our own effort,

  380. and when we rest

  381. in Christ alone

  382. for a right standing

  383. with God,

  384. when we trust in Him,

  385. we're united to Him.

  386. And what's true of Him

  387. is now true of us.

  388. Even though we are sinners,

  389. we are now counted

  390. as righteous in Him.

  391. When I was in elementary school,

  392. my family lived

  393. in upstate New York,

  394. and this was the time

  395. when the Buffalo Bills

  396. went to four consecutive

  397. Super Bowls.

  398. Some of you may remember that.

  399. So, naturally,

  400. we were all

  401. Buffalo Bills fans, right?

  402. Because they were crushing it.

  403. They had Jim Kelly

  404. and the no-huddle offense.

  405. They were hot stuff.

  406. But if you're a football fan,

  407. you remember what happened

  408. in each of those four Super Bowls?

  409. They lost every single one,

  410. four in a row.

  411. But the first one

  412. was the roughest

  413. in my child memory.

  414. Because the Bills lost

  415. that Super Bowl

  416. in the final seconds

  417. of the game.

  418. The score was 20 to 19.

  419. The New York Giants

  420. were up by one.

  421. The Bills kicker

  422. took the field 47 yards.

  423. The snap came.

  424. The kick went up.

  425. And then at the last second,

  426. it goes wide right.

  427. And they lose.

  428. Now, if you're a Bills fan,

  429. I'm sorry to make you relive

  430. that terrible day.

  431. But imagine,

  432. what if?

  433. What if Scott Norwood,

  434. who will forever live in infamy,

  435. what if Scott Norwood

  436. made the kick?

  437. Well, that one perfect kick

  438. would make the whole team

  439. Super Bowl champions.

  440. And not just the team,

  441. all the coaches and executives

  442. and all the suits too.

  443. But not just the players

  444. and not just the coaches

  445. and not just the executives,

  446. but the whole city of Buffalo.

  447. And not just the whole city of Buffalo,

  448. but every Bills fan

  449. across the state

  450. and across the country.

  451. One perfect kick

  452. and they'd all be Super Bowl champions.

  453. Because of what one guy did.

  454. Because of what he did,

  455. it would be credited to them all.

  456. Now, friends,

  457. you can stand on the 50-yard line

  458. and you can keep kicking

  459. and kicking and kicking,

  460. but it's never going to be enough.

  461. Or you can trust in the one

  462. who's already won.

  463. And his righteousness

  464. can be counted to you.

  465. The solution can never be found

  466. in going to the Father

  467. with our own righteousness.

  468. The solution can only be found

  469. and going to the Father,

  470. trusting in the righteousness

  471. of the one

  472. who's already there for you,

  473. the Lord Jesus.

  474. But lastly,

  475. the Holy Spirit will not only convict

  476. concerning sin and righteousness,

  477. but also judgment.

  478. Verse 11, look at that.

  479. The Holy Spirit will convict the world

  480. concerning judgment

  481. because the ruler of this world

  482. is judged.

  483. Let's ask ourselves for a second,

  484. whose judgment matters most

  485. at the end of the day?

  486. When Jesus was crucified

  487. by the Jewish and Roman authorities,

  488. they thought they had rendered

  489. the final verdict.

  490. They had judged Jesus,

  491. they had found him wanting,

  492. and they put an end to him.

  493. Is that how all this ends?

  494. If you're going to give your life

  495. to the crucified,

  496. resurrected,

  497. and ascended Jesus

  498. who you can't see,

  499. are you actually,

  500. at the end of the day,

  501. casting your lot

  502. with the losing side?

  503. The most religiously astute

  504. and the most politically powerful forces

  505. in the first century

  506. both condemned Jesus.

  507. And today, friends,

  508. many will render

  509. the same verdict.

  510. Jesus may have been a good man,

  511. but he wasn't God.

  512. Jesus may have been a good teacher,

  513. but we don't need a Savior.

  514. But whose judgment matters

  515. at the end of the day?

  516. The work of the Holy Spirit

  517. is to convict us

  518. also concerning judgment.

  519. The emptiness, at times,

  520. of human judgment

  521. and the reality and supremacy

  522. of God's judgment.

  523. You see, when you see the reality

  524. and gravity of your sin

  525. and when you see the sort of emptiness

  526. of your own righteousness,

  527. the last convicting work

  528. is to drive you

  529. to care more about

  530. the coming judgment of God

  531. than the passing judgments

  532. of this world.

  533. I recently watched

  534. some of the new animated version

  535. of Pilgrim's Progress.

  536. And at the beginning of the story,

  537. Christian, who's the pilgrim,

  538. starts to feel the load of his sin.

  539. And he starts to despair

  540. of his own righteousness.

  541. And then, evangelist,

  542. one of the characters,

  543. comes and says,

  544. run, Christian,

  545. run to the wicked gate,

  546. and there you'll find

  547. the solution to your burden.

  548. There you can be free.

  549. But as Christian sets out,

  550. even before he gets to the gate,

  551. he meets a whole cast

  552. of characters, doesn't he?

  553. Obstinate and pliable

  554. and worldly wise men

  555. and morality,

  556. and they all,

  557. in their own way,

  558. render human judgments

  559. on Christian

  560. and on the good news

  561. he's heard.

  562. Some try to minimize his sin.

  563. It's not that bad, Christian.

  564. Some try to convince him

  565. to maximize his own righteousness.

  566. Some say the whole thing's foolish.

  567. He should just turn back

  568. and find pleasure in his old life.

  569. But whose judgment matters?

  570. Jesus says the Holy Spirit

  571. convicts us concerning judgment

  572. because the ruler of this world

  573. is judged.

  574. The cross looked

  575. like the human defeat

  576. of Jesus.

  577. But in reality,

  578. it was the heavenly defeat

  579. of Satan,

  580. the ruler of this world,

  581. and all of his lies.

  582. The cross of Christ

  583. exposes Satan's lie

  584. that our sin isn't that bad.

  585. But in light of the cross,

  586. don't you see,

  587. if our sin isn't that bad,

  588. why would Jesus

  589. have to die for us?

  590. The cross exposes Satan's lie

  591. that we can build

  592. our own righteousness.

  593. But if we could build

  594. our own righteousness,

  595. what was Jesus doing

  596. hanging on that tree?

  597. The cross exposes Satan's lie

  598. that God doesn't really care

  599. about you anyway

  600. and you're on your own.

  601. But friends,

  602. look at the cross.

  603. The Father giving

  604. his only Son,

  605. the Son willingly laying

  606. down his life,

  607. for you and for me,

  608. so that we can be

  609. reconciled to God.

  610. The cross

  611. was Satan's defeat.

  612. Of course,

  613. to the world,

  614. the cross seems like

  615. foolishness.

  616. But when the Holy Spirit

  617. does his work,

  618. we see that our worldly

  619. judgments were empty

  620. and vain.

  621. God's judgment

  622. is the only thing

  623. that matters.

  624. and God's judgment

  625. has won the day.

  626. It's won the day

  627. in the beauty

  628. of the cross.

  629. So friends,

  630. is the Holy Spirit

  631. shining his light

  632. into your heart today?

  633. Do you have a growing sense

  634. of the real nature

  635. and gravity of your sin?

  636. Do you have a growing sense

  637. of your need

  638. for a righteousness

  639. that's not your own?

  640. Do you have a growing

  641. realization

  642. of the passing whim

  643. of the world's judgment?

  644. This

  645. is the loving work

  646. of God,

  647. the Holy Spirit,

  648. taking you by the hand

  649. and bringing you

  650. to the ascended

  651. and living Christ

  652. who died for you

  653. that you might live.

  654. So trust

  655. in Christ.

  656. Reach out to him

  657. in faith

  658. and embrace Christ

  659. with all that you are.

  660. And brothers and sisters,

  661. as we,

  662. the church,

  663. look out at our mission,

  664. our mission of witness bearing,

  665. let's not lose heart.

  666. I know the task

  667. seems impossible at times.

  668. I know the work

  669. seems overwhelming,

  670. but the Holy Spirit

  671. is here,

  672. Jesus says.

  673. We're not alone.

  674. So pray

  675. and plan

  676. and love

  677. and share

  678. and don't be afraid

  679. and don't be discouraged

  680. when you engage

  681. in spiritual conversations

  682. with your neighbors

  683. or coworkers.

  684. Remember

  685. the work

  686. of the Holy Spirit.

  687. He goes before you.

  688. You don't need

  689. to change people's hearts.

  690. That's his job

  691. and he's much better

  692. at it than you.

  693. You simply need

  694. to love

  695. and pray

  696. and listen

  697. and speak

  698. the good news

  699. as faithfully

  700. as you can.

  701. And that should

  702. give us freedom

  703. and joy

  704. in the mission

  705. before us.

  706. We're like sailors

  707. raising our sails

  708. to the wind.

  709. We're not anxious

  710. or worried

  711. about how hard

  712. we're going to have to row

  713. to make it to port,

  714. right?

  715. No.

  716. We lift our sails.

  717. We watch the wind

  718. fill the canvases.

  719. The sails get taut.

  720. The ropes tighten.

  721. And through no power

  722. of our own

  723. the ship heads out to sea.

  724. Brothers and sisters,

  725. do you feel

  726. the wind

  727. at your back

  728. as we go

  729. on this mission?

  730. God's building

  731. his kingdom.

  732. So let's lift

  733. our sails.

  734. Let's bear witness

  735. to our loving king

  736. and let's see

  737. where God will take us.

  738. Let's pray.

  739. Lord Jesus,

  740. we thank you

  741. for the gift

  742. of your Holy Spirit.

  743. Lord,

  744. too often

  745. we think we're alone

  746. when your very

  747. personal presence,

  748. God,

  749. is with us,

  750. in us,

  751. and among us.

  752. thank you for uniting

  753. us with yourself

  754. through Christ

  755. by your Spirit.

  756. Help us to be

  757. joyful and free

  758. as we share the good news

  759. of Christ crucified,

  760. risen,

  761. and ascended.

  762. And God,

  763. we pray especially

  764. this morning

  765. for those

  766. in whom

  767. your Holy Spirit

  768. is doing

  769. his convicting work.

  770. would you soften

  771. their hearts?

  772. Would you give them

  773. a real sense

  774. of these spiritual realities?

  775. And would you draw

  776. women and men

  777. to yourself

  778. without number?

  779. Pour saving faith

  780. upon the lost,

  781. we pray, God.

  782. Redeem your people today.

  783. We ask in Jesus' name.

  784. Amen.

  785. Let's stand.
