  1. Well, good morning, church. It's good to see you all on this Fourth of July.

  2. Glad you could join us for worship.

  3. We are continuing in our series in the book of John.

  4. We'll be in chapter 16, if you want to start looking there.

  5. In two chapters after John 16, Jesus is on trial before Pontius Pilate, the Roman ruler.

  6. And Jesus, in response to a question, says that everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.

  7. And Pilate responds, what is truth?

  8. I think this is a question, maybe, that many are asking today.

  9. I think there is a lot of confusion in our world about what truth is.

  10. There are some who would deny the reality of truth.

  11. That you could say a statement that actually corresponds to reality.

  12. There are some that deny the possibility of knowing truth.

  13. There may be a truth, but we can't know it.

  14. Certainly not without any level of confidence.

  15. On a popular level.

  16. We live in a world today where we have competing narratives about what is real and true in the world.

  17. We have to wade through accusations of fake news.

  18. And we wonder, who do we listen to?

  19. And commonly promoted, whether in the college dorm rooms or on Oprah, the idea that it is my truth that is most important.

  20. And that I need to speak my truth to the world.

  21. Not absolute.

  22. This isn't, I'm not going to put this on you, but this is my truth.

  23. And this becomes the defining reality for me, but not for anyone else.

  24. And for some of us who actually believe in truth, we still struggle with the reality.

  25. We see the dangers of absolutism and the way that it has created, Lord, the way it has created unhealthy patterns.

  26. We've seen the need for humility.

  27. And in all of this, it makes us wonder, with Pilate, what is truth?

  28. And this question is a broad cultural one.

  29. It is also a specific one for churches to answer, is it not?

  30. Because the question of religious truth is particularly fraught.

  31. In our culture today, religious truth is even more personalized, even more separated out from truth.

  32. We think that what religious truth is, is really just an opinion on how I choose to think about what God might or might not be for me.

  33. Our passage this morning in John 16 speaks to these questions.

  34. And will help us gain confidence in our pursuit of truth this morning.

  35. The disciples, giving this passage context, the disciples have been hearing from Jesus now for two chapters that he's going away.

  36. We know from the storyline, this is literally the night before he will be crucified.

  37. He will die.

  38. So he is preparing them for what is coming.

  39. He's telling them what is happening.

  40. He's saying, I am going away.

  41. And the disciples are thinking, well, how are we going to know anymore?

  42. You've been leading us.

  43. You've been with us.

  44. You've been teaching us.

  45. How are we going to know?

  46. We have so many questions.

  47. How will we know the truth when you are gone?

  48. John.

  49. And this is what leads us to our passage today.

  50. The Gospel of John, chapter 16, verses 12 through 15.

    John 16:12–15

  51. And I'm actually going to back up and start in verse 5 just to give it a little bit of context.

  52. But we're going to be looking and focusing on 12 through 15 today.

  53. So let's read God's Word together.

  54. John, we'll start at the beginning of that section in the ESV.

  55. I did not say these things to you from the beginning because I was with you.

  56. But now I'm going to him who sent me.

  57. And none of you ask me, where are you going?

  58. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

  59. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth.

  60. It is to your advantage that I go away.

  61. For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.

  62. But if I go, I will send him to you.

  63. And when he comes, he will convict the world.

  64. Concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

  65. Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me.

  66. Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer.

  67. Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

  68. I still have many things to say to you.

  69. But you cannot bear them now.

  70. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.

  71. For he will not speak on his own authority.

  72. But whatever he hears, he will speak.

  73. And he will declare to you the things that are to come.

  74. He will glorify me.

  75. For he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

  76. All the Father has is mine.

  77. Therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

  78. Let's pray as we look at God's Word together.

  79. Lord, we thank you for this Word this morning.

  80. We thank you for the opportunity to gather in freedom to read and to worship.

  81. Lord, we pray this morning that what this passage says would be true.

  82. That your Spirit would be at work among us.

  83. That your Spirit would lead us into truth.

  84. The truth of your Word and the truth about you.

  85. God, we pray this morning that you would give us receptive hearts.

  86. Lord, to have discernment and wisdom.

  87. To grow in knowledge of you.

  88. Lord, I pray this morning that you would help me.

  89. The words that I speak, Lord, would be useful in the hands of your Spirit.

  90. Lord, to proclaim the truth of your Word.

  91. So that we might together sit under it and grow because of that.

  92. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  93. Amen.

  94. Friends, the big idea of our passage this morning is this.

  95. That God's Spirit leads us into the truth that we most need.

  96. Jesus, in verse 12, says,

  97. I have many more things to teach you.

  98. I've only been with you for a little while.

  99. And honestly, you guys haven't been the best students.

  100. You've misunderstood over and over again what I've said and what I'm about.

  101. And I have many more things to say to you, but you can't bear them now.

  102. Jesus knows their weakness.

  103. Jesus knows we can't drink from a fire hose and just download all the information at once.

  104. So He says,

  105. You cannot bear it.

  106. And I know that.

  107. But I am not going to leave you alone.

  108. This is what He's been saying for a while, but He says it again.

  109. And then specifically about this idea of hearing and knowing Jesus' teaching and the truth about it.

  110. He says,

  111. I am going to send you the Spirit and the Spirit of truth.

  112. When He comes, He will lead you into all truth.

  113. And this is the first big idea in this passage,

  114. is that God is going to send His Spirit to lead us into all truth.

  115. What He says is,

  116. The Spirit's going to come and continue what I've been doing.

  117. Jesus came to reveal God to the world,

  118. to proclaim Him and to embody Him so that we might know who God is.

  119. And what Jesus is saying is,

  120. I am going away,

  121. but my presence and this teaching,

  122. revealing ministry that I have been doing will continue

  123. because the Holy Spirit will continue what I have started

  124. in making known God to the world.

  125. He will speak truth.

  126. If you look at these verses 12 through 15,

  127. do you see how many times the words are

  128. say, speak, or declare over and over again?

  129. This is the primary way that the Spirit teaches us,

  130. is by speaking through words.

  131. And He will speak truth about God first to His disciples.

  132. His audience is particularly, primarily His disciples,

  133. the 12 who have been with Him for these three years.

  134. And what we know from the rest of Scripture

  135. is that what Jesus is promising

  136. is that these men will then be the primary witnesses

  137. who will tell others about Jesus.

  138. As they learn from the Spirit,

  139. they will tell others about Jesus.

  140. And that's not only in the historical reality

  141. of the proclamation in the first century,

  142. but it also becomes this.

  143. The Spirit will inspire these first followers of Jesus

  144. to write down the truth about Jesus

  145. so that we now, 20 centuries later,

  146. can still benefit from the overflow.

  147. So the primary audience of Jesus' statement here

  148. is the apostles,

  149. but the overflow audience is all of us.

  150. That the Spirit will teach the church.

  151. And if the Spirit is teaching the apostles

  152. through the inspiration and the writing of the Scriptures,

  153. He's going to teach the church

  154. through the illumination of those writings,

  155. the illumination,

  156. the making clear what the Scriptures mean

  157. for the church throughout all the ages.

  158. So Jesus promises us

  159. that the Spirit is going to continue

  160. to teach us the truth that we most need.

  161. And the focal point of it

  162. is on the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  163. I say this partly.

  164. Look at the end of verse 13.

  165. Jesus says,

  166. He will guide you into all the truth,

  167. for He will not speak on His own,

  168. but whatever He speaks,

  169. He will declare to you

  170. the things that are to come.

  171. Now, some people have thought

  172. that the Spirit is going to teach

  173. about the end times

  174. and all sorts of speculative things

  175. about what's to come.

  176. But I actually think

  177. we need to read this very carefully.

  178. Jesus is speaking

  179. the day before His crucifixion

  180. and three days before His resurrection.

  181. And those are the things to come

  182. that Jesus is referring to.

  183. And He's saying,

  184. you will understand this

  185. when the Spirit comes.

  186. And in fact,

  187. John has said this in other places.

  188. The disciples did not understand this now.

  189. But when Jesus rose from the dead,

  190. when the Spirit came to illuminate

  191. and help them interpret

  192. and understand what it was about,

  193. then it made sense to them.

  194. And then it was clear

  195. what the significance of Jesus' life,

  196. death, and resurrection really was.

  197. And this is the focus

  198. on His most important things.

  199. The Spirit will also focus on Jesus

  200. as you see at the beginning of verse 14.

  201. He will glorify me.

  202. Now, if you've been here for a while,

  203. you've heard me say this over and over again.

  204. But for those of you who haven't been here,

  205. it's worth stopping to think,

  206. what does glorify really mean?

  207. It's a church word

  208. we throw around all the time.

  209. What does it mean to glorify something?

  210. To glorify something means

  211. to make clear,

  212. to make manifest

  213. so that other people can see

  214. and appreciate

  215. the intrinsic quality,

  216. character, and beauty of something.

  217. Okay?

  218. It actually can also be used,

  219. you could glorify evil if you wanted to,

  220. you could expose its negative,

  221. but usually it's glorifying something positive.

  222. So glorifying is to make something known

  223. and clear

  224. so that other people can see it

  225. and respond

  226. by treasuring its value and goodness.

  227. And this is what Jesus says

  228. the Spirit is going to do.

  229. He will glorify me.

  230. Jesus is going to come

  231. and be like a spotlight,

  232. shining His light

  233. upon Jesus Christ.

  234. I don't know if you've ever been

  235. to the Statue of Liberty,

  236. but it's really interesting

  237. to look at the floodlights

  238. that they have

  239. that make the Statue of Liberty

  240. visible at night.

  241. I don't know if you remember,

  242. but during Hurricane Sandy,

  243. the lights went out

  244. and the power went out

  245. and the Statue of Liberty

  246. disappeared at night.

  247. But when you look at this,

  248. you realize

  249. these floodlights

  250. make clear

  251. the beauty of this statue.

  252. And that's what

  253. Jesus is saying

  254. the Holy Spirit is going to do.

  255. And here's the thing,

  256. if you go and stare

  257. into the floodlight,

  258. what are you going to see?

  259. Nothing.

  260. Because the purpose

  261. of a floodlight

  262. is not to be stared at.

  263. The purpose of a floodlight

  264. is to shine its light

  265. on something else.

  266. And Jesus is saying

  267. the Spirit is going to come

  268. to continue

  269. what the Father has begun

  270. and what I am doing

  271. to glorify the Son

  272. in His work of redemption

  273. to make this

  274. the most important truth

  275. for anyone to know

  276. throughout all of history.

  277. Jesus is saying

  278. you are not left

  279. grasping for the truth.

  280. God is making Himself known.

  281. The Father is revealing Himself

  282. through the Son

  283. and the Spirit

  284. is now shining

  285. His floodlight

  286. on the Son

  287. to lift Him up.

  288. This is what we heard earlier.

  289. God in various times

  290. in the past

  291. spoke in various ways

  292. to the prophet

  293. but now He has spoken

  294. His final word,

  295. the complete word,

  296. the end of the word,

  297. Jesus.

  298. This is what John himself

  299. tells us

  300. when we look at

  301. the very beginning

  302. of John in the prologue.

  303. the word became flesh

  304. and dwelt among us

  305. and we have beheld His glory

  306. because this is how

  307. we know the Father

  308. through this one God

  309. who has come

  310. to earth.

  311. And so this is the focal point

  312. of what the Spirit is doing

  313. is bringing us news

  314. and information

  315. and knowledge

  316. of Jesus Christ

  317. and His work

  318. so that we might see it

  319. and be in response to it

  320. be brought to faith

  321. in Jesus.

  322. So the Spirit

  323. will bring us into truth

  324. in this focused way

  325. but I will say as well

  326. that I believe that

  327. as Jesus says

  328. as He says

  329. the Spirit will lead us

  330. into all truth.

  331. And I want to broaden our experience

  332. so if this is the focal point

  333. then this overflows

  334. into a richness

  335. of the truth of God

  336. for all of life.

  337. That God is going to give us

  338. a knowledge

  339. about the reality

  340. of the world we live in

  341. and wisdom

  342. on how to live

  343. in the world

  344. under God.

  345. Let me explain

  346. what I mean by this, right?

  347. There's a phrase that says

  348. all truth is God's truth

  349. and this is a helpful phrase

  350. in as much as it

  351. is God-centered

  352. it is a wonderful thing

  353. to recognize

  354. that everything

  355. that is true

  356. that corresponds

  357. to reality

  358. that's defined by God

  359. is something

  360. that is coherent with

  361. and a part of God's truth.

  362. The Bible doesn't

  363. tell us everything.

  364. It doesn't tell me

  365. how to build

  366. an engine

  367. for an airplane, right?

  368. It doesn't tell me

  369. how to code

  370. a computer.

  371. It doesn't even tell me

  372. how to cook

  373. chicken marsala, right?

  374. It doesn't tell me

  375. all sorts of really

  376. basic things of life

  377. and very specific things

  378. but what it does do

  379. is it gives us

  380. a framework.

  381. Gives us a framework

  382. to understand

  383. everything we do.

  384. Part of what the Spirit

  385. is going to do

  386. is give us the keys

  387. to the library

  388. where we can go in

  389. to the Creator's home

  390. and we can pull out

  391. the blueprints

  392. to see how He's created

  393. the world.

  394. We can read His tomes

  395. of His work

  396. throughout history

  397. to see the way

  398. the world works

  399. in different ways.

  400. It's going to give us

  401. a knowledge about ontology,

  402. what truly is

  403. in the world

  404. and it's also going to

  405. give us this knowledge

  406. about wisdom

  407. of how to live.

  408. Now look,

  409. I know there are some

  410. who have questioned this

  411. who have wondered

  412. is the Bible

  413. really trustworthy

  414. and they often throw out

  415. some really

  416. some red herrings.

  417. Well the Bible says

  418. that the sun rose

  419. and we're scientists

  420. and we know

  421. that the sun doesn't rise,

  422. we know that the earth spins.

  423. So that can't be truth.

  424. Well listen friends,

  425. can we give God

  426. more credit than that?

  427. Can we give God

  428. more credit

  429. than He can write

  430. in literary genres

  431. and in context

  432. and can we re-understand

  433. that what He is communicating

  434. and the question

  435. we need to ask

  436. of each passage is

  437. what is this passage

  438. seeking to tell us

  439. about reality

  440. and about God?

  441. And when it says

  442. the sun rose

  443. it's not trying

  444. to describe

  445. the specific

  446. scientific process

  447. of how the earth

  448. relates to the sun

  449. in a

  450. what's the right word?

  451. Astronomical

  452. way.

  453. Right?

  454. That's not what

  455. it's trying to do.

  456. It's simply saying

  457. from the perspective

  458. of a human being

  459. the sun came up.

  460. Right?

  461. So let's not be thrown

  462. off by those red herrings.

  463. There are good questions

  464. to ask

  465. and there are good things

  466. for us to explore

  467. in terms of how we

  468. understand the coherence

  469. and truthfulness

  470. of the Bible.

  471. But what John

  472. is telling us here today

  473. is that the Spirit

  474. will lead us

  475. into all truth

  476. and the Bible

  477. gives us a big picture

  478. of what is real

  479. and how to live

  480. in that world.

  481. What does this mean?

  482. What might this look like?

  483. Friends,

  484. we could be here

  485. for the rest of creation.

  486. And not exhaust this

  487. because this is the glory

  488. of what we're doing

  489. is God is leading us

  490. to interact with Him

  491. in His creation

  492. for as long as we have

  493. life and breath

  494. under His truth

  495. and with His knowledge.

  496. But I want to give you

  497. maybe just a taste

  498. of what it might look like.

  499. What might it look like

  500. for a biomedical engineer

  501. to think about

  502. what he does

  503. in light of God's truth?

  504. Well, she might explore

  505. the complexity

  506. of the human body

  507. as something created

  508. by God.

  509. She might work humbly

  510. as a sub-creator

  511. recognizing she doesn't have

  512. ultimate control

  513. over the world

  514. but that God

  515. is in doubt

  516. with the ability

  517. to create something,

  518. biomedical technology,

  519. that might actually

  520. help someone.

  521. she might consider

  522. that God is the Lord

  523. of life and death

  524. but that she has been

  525. given gifts

  526. to be able to help people

  527. in the process.

  528. she would see

  529. how the healing process

  530. or the restoring

  531. to what we would call

  532. healthy functioning

  533. is a foretaste

  534. of the ultimate redemption

  535. that God is going to bring

  536. to all of His creation

  537. when the powers of sin and death

  538. are defeated

  539. and eradicated finally.

  540. And she might rejoice

  541. in the opportunity

  542. to serve others

  543. by building

  544. biotechnical

  545. I don't even know

  546. I'm so far out of my field

  547. I can't

  548. I don't even know

  549. what it might be

  550. but something that could

  551. actually help

  552. people live

  553. and thrive

  554. in this world.

  555. Those are the kinds

  556. of questions

  557. that a biomedical engineer

  558. might ask

  559. in light of

  560. the truth

  561. that God is revealing

  562. in the world.

  563. Here's another example.

  564. How about a filmmaker?

  565. What is a filmmaker

  566. going to do

  567. to think about

  568. what they do

  569. in light of

  570. the truth

  571. that God has revealed?

  572. Well, I think

  573. first of all

  574. they're going to consider

  575. the storyline

  576. all filmmakers

  577. are telling stories

  578. right?

  579. So they're going to consider

  580. the storyline

  581. of the Bible

  582. creation

  583. fall

  584. redemption

  585. glory

  586. right?

  587. if this is the arc

  588. then the films

  589. that he makes

  590. might do

  591. all sorts

  592. of different things

  593. it might

  594. reveal

  595. the

  596. the created

  597. beauty

  598. of humanity

  599. and of creation

  600. the

  601. in his imageness

  602. of all human beings

  603. male and female

  604. from every tribe

  605. and tongue

  606. and to

  607. to bring to light

  608. the glory

  609. of the diversity

  610. of what God

  611. has created

  612. in humanity

  613. and in creation

  614. he might tell

  615. stories

  616. about darkness

  617. and despair

  618. how sin

  619. and evil

  620. have infiltrated

  621. the world

  622. how it corrupts

  623. our souls

  624. how it corrupts

  625. our society

  626. how it has brought

  627. death broadly

  628. into the world

  629. and how it might

  630. help us connect

  631. with that

  632. and help us

  633. understand

  634. the despair

  635. and brokenness

  636. that that brings

  637. he might tell

  638. stories

  639. of redemption

  640. of courage

  641. and of hope

  642. that remind us

  643. the incredible thing

  644. that God has done

  645. by bringing

  646. Jesus

  647. our rescue

  648. and our savior

  649. to break

  650. into the darkness

  651. with light

  652. to bring hope

  653. where there is despair

  654. to bring life

  655. where there is death

  656. so we might tell

  657. stories

  658. of redemption

  659. and of love

  660. and of restoration

  661. he might tell

  662. stories

  663. that give us

  664. tastes of heaven

  665. of perfection

  666. of glory

  667. of righteousness

  668. and justice

  669. that will never

  670. be true

  671. on this earth

  672. but when we get

  673. a taste of it

  674. we are reminded

  675. of what God

  676. is doing

  677. in the world

  678. and where

  679. this creation

  680. is going

  681. I hope

  682. that you can

  683. see through

  684. these two

  685. little examples

  686. what it might

  687. look like

  688. to begin

  689. to embrace

  690. this overflowing

  691. truth

  692. that God

  693. is giving us

  694. by his spirit

  695. some of you

  696. are engaged

  697. in the university

  698. world

  699. and your world

  700. is the world

  701. of ideas

  702. and Jesus

  703. is telling you

  704. that the Holy Spirit

  705. wants to teach

  706. you how

  707. what you do

  708. in the academy

  709. is going

  710. to connect

  711. with what God

  712. is doing

  713. in all of creation

  714. and all of history

  715. and for you

  716. to find your place

  717. to serve God

  718. in all of these things

  719. some of you

  720. have nothing to do

  721. with the university

  722. you don't care

  723. about it at all

  724. and God is doing

  725. the same thing

  726. for you

  727. no matter what

  728. you are spending

  729. your time doing

  730. no matter what

  731. you are engaged

  732. in your life

  733. God has given us

  734. a framework

  735. to navigate

  736. all kinds

  737. of different questions

  738. of life

  739. and work

  740. here are some things

  741. that the Bible

  742. speaks to

  743. that our society

  744. is wrestling

  745. with today

  746. the Bible speaks

  747. to gender

  748. identity

  749. and sexuality

  750. and how we

  751. understand that

  752. the Bible speaks

  753. to race

  754. and oppression

  755. and discrimination

  756. and glory

  757. in the diversity

  758. of our world

  759. the Bible speaks

  760. to economics

  761. and to justice

  762. the Bible speaks

  763. to the importance

  764. of work

  765. and of play

  766. and of rest

  767. the Bible speaks

  768. to the place

  769. of politics

  770. and society

  771. and how we live

  772. with one another

  773. and our neighbors

  774. and it applies

  775. in the everyday

  776. lives

  777. of relating

  778. to one another

  779. of being in a family

  780. of being a parent

  781. or being a child

  782. and so on

  783. and so forth

  784. and in all

  785. these things

  786. God is giving us

  787. through His Spirit

  788. a knowledge

  789. of the ontology

  790. of what is true

  791. about the world

  792. and then

  793. a knowledge

  794. of wisdom

  795. how we are to live

  796. under God's rule

  797. how are we to live

  798. wisdom might be

  799. described as

  800. living in harmony

  801. with or in

  802. concert with

  803. God's creative purposes

  804. and God's plans

  805. for this world

  806. and this is what

  807. God is doing

  808. the Bible doesn't

  809. always give us

  810. easy answers

  811. it certainly doesn't

  812. always tell us

  813. what job we should

  814. take

  815. who we should marry

  816. or what we should

  817. eat for dinner

  818. but it does tell us

  819. all that we need

  820. in this big picture

  821. and the most important

  822. thing there is Jesus

  823. but there's this

  824. grand glorious picture

  825. of His kingdom

  826. and His world

  827. that He's invited us

  828. in to explore

  829. and to know

  830. and to exhaust

  831. our whole lives

  832. learning more

  833. and more

  834. about the glory

  835. of God

  836. in all of this

  837. how do we

  838. how do we do this

  839. how do we pursue this

  840. friends

  841. it actually isn't

  842. very difficult

  843. and it's also

  844. incredibly difficult

  845. here's the easy part

  846. do you see this book

  847. it's called a Bible

  848. if you have one

  849. you should read it

  850. if you don't have one

  851. you should get one

  852. and read it

  853. because it is how God

  854. has put down

  855. in writing

  856. His revelation

  857. to us

  858. so how do we pursue

  859. growing in our knowledge

  860. of truth of God

  861. well we read the Bible

  862. that may sound

  863. really simple

  864. it may sound simplistic

  865. but it's the most

  866. important thing

  867. to do

  868. and to do it

  869. asking God

  870. God help me

  871. understand it

  872. because Jesus

  873. is promising us

  874. that the Spirit

  875. will help us

  876. do that

  877. you don't have

  878. to be an expert

  879. you don't have

  880. to be an intellectual

  881. you don't have

  882. to be a theologian

  883. to understand

  884. God's Word

  885. because God's Spirit

  886. can help you

  887. secondly

  888. explore the world

  889. with the lens

  890. of the Bible

  891. take seriously

  892. the calling

  893. that God has put on you

  894. to figure out

  895. how in the things

  896. that I invest my life in

  897. what does God

  898. think about these things

  899. start with the Bible

  900. but recognize

  901. that you also have

  902. the church

  903. the church today

  904. and the church

  905. throughout history

  906. for you to talk to

  907. about this

  908. that means reading books

  909. we have a book stall

  910. downstairs

  911. many of you

  912. haven't seen it

  913. because we've been

  914. in a pandemic

  915. for 18 months

  916. but there's a book stall

  917. downstairs

  918. if you want a book

  919. on something

  920. go down there

  921. see if you have one

  922. we have a resource list

  923. on our webpage

  924. and if you don't find

  925. what you're looking for

  926. come talk to me

  927. or one of the elders

  928. we'd love to help you

  929. find books

  930. that can explore

  931. God's world

  932. and how God's world view

  933. applies in different

  934. parts of life

  935. and finally

  936. live a life

  937. of humility

  938. acknowledging

  939. that you don't

  940. know everything

  941. but that you are

  942. related to a God

  943. who is truth

  944. and a God

  945. who by his spirit

  946. of truth

  947. is leading you

  948. into all truth

  949. that's the main point

  950. of our passage

  951. but there are two more

  952. verses here

  953. that we need to spend

  954. at least a minute on

  955. because when you look

  956. at verses 14 and 15

  957. it is remarkable

  958. what Jesus says here

  959. we could have just

  960. preached the sermon

  961. I just finished

  962. and that would be nice

  963. but there's more here

  964. and we need to taste

  965. because the spirit

  966. doesn't only lead us

  967. into all truth

  968. but the spirit

  969. leads us in a way

  970. that helps us understand

  971. that truth comes

  972. from the triune God

  973. when you look at

  974. verses 13, 14, and 15

  975. what is it that the spirit does?

  976. The spirit speaks

  977. what he hears from Jesus

  978. and declares it

  979. to the disciples

  980. verse 14

  981. what Jesus has

  982. that is the truth

  983. and the knowledge

  984. of who he is

  985. and his self-disclosure

  986. the spirit will declare

  987. that is what

  988. so from Jesus

  989. through the spirit

  990. to us

  991. and then verse 15 says

  992. oh and by the way

  993. what I have

  994. Jesus is speaking

  995. Jesus says

  996. what I have

  997. I get that from the father

  998. and so the father

  999. through the son

  1000. by the spirit

  1001. is brought to us

  1002. in this incredibly

  1003. personal way

  1004. I said earlier

  1005. that the spirit

  1006. unlocks the library

1007. so we can walk in

  1008. and read the blueprints

  1009. and see the tomes

  1010. of the library

  1011. but it's actually

  1012. better than that

  1013. isn't it?

  1014. because what the spirit

  1015. is

  1016. is the promise

  1017. that the creator

  1018. himself

  1019. the architect

  1020. the librarian

  1021. wants a relationship

  1022. with us

  1023. that we can walk

  1024. into his library

  1025. and not just read

  1026. his books

  1027. but we can sit

  1028. in the armchair

  1029. across the table

1030. have a cup of tea

  1031. metaphorically

  1032. with Jesus

  1033. and ask him

  1034. and learn from him

  1035. the grand architect

  1036. the author

  1037. of all things

  1038. we are taught

  1039. by him

  1040. directly

  1041. and the spirit

  1042. brings

  1043. the fullness

  1044. of truth

  1045. to us

  1046. and so truth

  1047. is found

  1048. ultimately

  1049. and fully

  1050. in relationship

  1051. with God

  1052. here's a quote

  1053. I found online

1054. this is on a blog

  1055. post

  1056. on Ligonier.com

  1057. but it's a quote

  1058. from Herman

  1059. Bavink

  1060. who's a great

  1061. theologian

1062. this is what he says

  1063. about this

  1064. God

  1065. is the truth

  1066. in its absolute

  1067. fullness

  1068. he therefore

  1069. is the primary

  1070. the original truth

  1071. the source

  1072. of all truth

  1073. the truth

  1074. in all truth

  1075. he is the ground

  1076. of truth

  1077. of the true being

  1078. of all things

  1079. of their knowability

  1080. and conceivability

  1081. the ideal

  1082. and archetype

  1083. of all truth

  1084. of all ethical being

  1085. of all rules

  1086. and laws

  1087. in light of which

  1088. the nature

  1089. and manifestation

  1090. of all things

  1091. should be judged

  1092. and on which

  1093. they should be modeled

  1094. God

  1095. is the source

  1096. and origin

  1097. of the knowledge

  1098. of truth

  1099. in all areas

  1100. of life

  1101. the Bible

  1102. does not simply

  1103. bring to us

  1104. a coherent

  1105. world view

  1106. with a philosophical

  1107. understanding

  1108. that coheres

  1109. but God

  1110. the Bible

  1111. brings us

  1112. God himself

  1113. who is the definer

  1114. and the creator

  1115. and the source

  1116. he is the beginning

  1117. and the end

  1118. of all truth

  1119. according to the Bible

  1120. friends I don't know

  1121. if you've thought

  1122. about this

  1123. but this is how

  1124. the Bible

  1125. really answers

  1126. the question

  1127. of religious knowledge

  1128. some people would say

1129. well I need to come

  1130. to religious knowledge

  1131. through a scientific

  1132. I need to look

  1133. at evidences

  1134. and facts

  1135. and somehow

  1136. come to a proof

  1137. and faith

  1138. would be

  1139. denying that process

  1140. and ignoring it

  1141. but the Bible

  1142. actually says

  1143. that faith

  1144. and truth

  1145. go together

  1146. faith isn't

  1147. biblically

  1148. blind trust

  1149. faith is

  1150. reasonable trust

  1151. faith is

  1152. seeing that

  1153. there is

  1154. something there

  1155. and being

  1156. willing to

  1157. actually entrust

  1158. yourself

  1159. to it

  1160. and the truth

  1161. is that God

  1162. is making himself

  1163. known

  1164. in so many

  1165. various ways

  1166. and by his spirit

  1167. is drawing us

  1168. into that truth

  1169. so that faith

  1170. in God

  1171. is not an

  1172. irrational act

  1173. but it is a

  1174. super rational act

  1175. it is a

  1176. spiritual act

  1177. it is not in

  1178. denial of

  1179. a scientific method

  1180. but it is above

  1181. that

  1182. the biblical

  1183. worldview

  1184. marries faith

  1185. and truth together

  1186. because here's the thing

  1187. if you deny

  1188. the possibility

  1189. of the existence

  1190. of God

  1191. as a presupposition

  1192. you will never

  1193. know

  1194. whether there

  1195. is a God

  1196. or not

  1197. but what the

  1198. bible says

  1199. is

  1200. if you are

  1201. willing

  1202. if you will

  1203. humble yourself

  1204. and acknowledge

  1205. that maybe

  1206. there is a

  1207. God

  1208. then God

  1209. will reveal

  1210. himself to you

  1211. he will make

  1212. himself known

  1213. and he will

  1214. lead you

  1215. into all

  1216. truth

  1217. and so

  1218. relating to

  1219. God

  1220. is where

  1221. we find

  1222. what is

  1223. really

  1224. true

  1225. and real

  1226. because the

  1227. spirit

  1228. of all

  1229. truth

  1230. is going

  1231. to come

  1232. and bring

  1233. to us

  1234. not just

  1235. a system

  1236. and knowledge

  1237. but bring

  1238. to us

  1239. a revelation

  1240. of God

  1241. himself

  1242. the person

  1243. of God

  1244. will be

  1245. made known

  1246. to us

  1247. and as we

  1248. respond to him

  1249. in faith

  1250. we are then

  1251. able to

  1252. understand

  1253. the truth

  1254. friends

  1255. this is what

  1256. Jesus has

  1257. said from

  1258. the very

  1259. beginning

  1260. Jesus

  1261. in John

    John 1:14

  1262. 1

  1263. verse 14

  1264. is the

  1265. word became

  1266. flesh

  1267. dwelt among

  1268. us

  1269. full of

  1270. grace

  1271. and truth

  1272. and we

  1273. have beheld

  1274. his glory

  1275. if you want

  1276. to know

  1277. what God

  1278. is like

  1279. you go

  1280. to Jesus

  1281. you look

  1282. at him

  1283. because the

  1284. Bible says

  1285. this is where

  1286. God has

  1287. displayed his

  1288. glory

  1289. and when

  1290. you see

  1291. his glory

  1292. you will

  1293. experience

  1294. what Jesus

  1295. promised

  1296. in John

  1297. 8

  1298. if you

  1299. abide

  1300. in my

  1301. word

  1302. you are

  1303. truly

  1304. my

  1305. disciples

  1306. and you

  1307. will

  1308. know

  1309. the

  1310. truth

  1311. and the

  1312. truth

  1313. will set

  1314. you

  1315. free

  1316. when you

  1317. see

  1318. Jesus

  1319. in his

  1320. glory

  1321. you will

  1322. understand

  1323. why

  1324. Jesus

  1325. said

  1326. in John

  1327. 14

  1328. 6

  1329. I am

  1330. the way

  1331. and the

  1332. truth

  1333. and the

  1334. life

  1335. no one

  1336. comes to

  1337. the

  1338. father

  1339. except

  1340. through

  1341. me

  1342. this is

  1343. the great

  1344. hope

  1345. for the

  1346. disciples

  1347. as they're

  1348. watching

  1349. Jesus

  1350. say

  1351. he's

  1352. going

  1353. away

  1354. and

  1355. wondering

  1356. how

  1357. can

  1358. we

  1359. know

  1360. you

  1361. the

  1362. spirit

  1363. is

  1364. going

  1365. to

  1366. come

  1367. and we

  1368. still

  1369. have

  1370. that

  1371. same

  1372. spirit

  1373. today

  1374. that

  1375. same

  1376. spirit

  1377. is

  1378. still

  1379. at

  1380. work

  1381. in

  1382. the

  1383. world

  1384. and

  1385. is

  1386. in

  1387. the

  1388. church

  1389. revealing

  1390. this

  1391. Jesus

  1392. to

  1393. us

  1394. revealing

  1395. God

  1396. to

  1397. us

  1398. so

  1399. that

  1400. we

  1401. might

  1402. know

  1403. him

  1404. and

  1405. know

  1406. his

  1407. truth

  1408. we

  1409. are

  1410. not

  1411. adrift

  1412. my

  1413. friends

  1414. we

  1415. don't

  1416. have

  1417. to

  1418. create

  1419. our

  1420. own

  1421. truth

  1422. or

  1423. to

  1424. grasp

  1425. in

  1426. the

  1427. dark

  1428. as

  1429. if

  1430. we

  1431. were

  1432. lost

  1433. but

  1434. the

  1435. Holy

  1436. Spirit

  1437. is

  1438. seeking

  1439. us

  1440. to

  1441. bring

  1442. to

  1443. us

  1444. all

  1445. truth

  1446. and

  1447. to

  1448. guide

  1449. us

  1450. so

  1451. that

  1452. we

  1453. might

  1454. know

  1455. him

  1456. and

  1457. know

  1458. the

  1459. truth

  1460. that

  1461. is

  1462. in

  1463. him

  1464. the

  1465. spirit

  1466. is

  1467. here

  1468. friends

  1469. let

  1470. us

  1471. rejoice

  1472. and

  1473. let

  1474. us

  1475. pray

  1476. spirit

  1477. we

  1478. come

  1479. to

  1480. you

  1481. Jesus

  1482. father

  1483. we

  1484. come

  1485. acknowledging

  1486. that the

  1487. mystery

  1488. of the

  1489. trinity

  1490. is

  1491. greater

  1492. than we

  1493. can

  1494. understand

  1495. fully

  1496. and

  1497. yet

  1498. we

  1499. thank

  1500. you

  1501. that

  1502. in

  1503. the

  1504. richness

  1505. of

  1506. your

  1507. three

  1508. persons

  1509. father

  1510. son

  1511. and

  1512. holy

  1513. spirit

  1514. you

  1515. have

  1516. revealed

  1517. yourself

  1518. to

  1519. us

  1520. your

  1521. gracious

  1522. self

  1523. disclosure

  1524. means

  1525. that

  1526. we

  1527. are

  1528. not

  1529. adrift

  1530. but

  1531. lord

  1532. that

  1533. we

  1534. can

  1535. know

  1536. real

  1537. truth

  1538. and

  1539. that

  1540. the

  1541. most

  1542. important

  1543. truth

  1544. is

  1545. about

  1546. you

  1547. once

  1548. we

  1549. know

  1550. you

  1551. lord

  1552. that

  1553. we

  1554. can

  1555. explore

  1556. all

  1557. truth

  1558. in

  1559. this

  1560. world

  1561. in

  1562. ways

  1563. that

  1564. bring

  1565. glory

  1566. to

  1567. you

  1568. lord

  1569. i

  1570. pray

  1571. this

  1572. morning

  1573. lord

  1574. if

  1575. there

  1576. are

  1577. those

  1578. here

  1579. this

  1580. morning

  1581. who

  1582. don't

  1583. yet

  1584. know

  1585. you

  1586. who

  1587. don't

  1588. yet

  1589. understand

  1590. that

  1591. you

  1592. are

  1593. God

  1594. of

  1595. truth

  1596. to

  1597. rescue

  1598. us

  1599. from

  1600. our

  1601. lostness

  1602. lord

  1603. i

  1604. pray

  1605. that

  1606. your

  1607. spirit

  1608. would

  1609. lead

  1610. them

  1611. into

  1612. truth

  1613. this

  1614. morning

  1615. and

  1616. i

  1617. pray

  1618. for

  1619. all

  1620. of

  1621. us

  1622. lord

  1623. that

  1624. we

  1625. would

  1626. have

  1627. confidence

  1628. in a

  1629. world

  1630. that

  1631. seems

  1632. adrift

  1633. that

  1634. we

  1635. would

  1636. have

  1637. confidence

  1638. that

  1639. in

  1640. knowing

  1641. you

  1642. we

  1643. can

  1644. know

  1645. what

  1646. is

  1647. right

  1648. and

  1649. good

  1650. and

  1651. true

  1652. in

  1653. this

  1654. world

  1655. holy

  1656. spirit

  1657. help

  1658. us

  1659. we

  1660. pray

  1661. we

  1662. pray

  1663. these

  1664. things

  1665. in

  1666. Jesus

  1667. name

  1668. amen

  1669. amen
