  1. I think we just need to pray.

  2. You hear those?

  3. I get teared up every time that song comes on.

  4. Man, Clay, that was hard, man.

  5. Got to preach after that?

  6. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  7. Gracious Heavenly Father,

  8. thank you for your word through your servant Paul,

  9. as we're about to read.

  10. Help us now by grace through faith in Christ

  11. who is worthy.

  12. Help us through the power of your Holy Spirit

  13. to receive the word that you have for us today.

  14. What we know not, teach us.

  15. What we have not, give us.

  16. What we are not, make us.

  17. We pray in Jesus' name,

  18. in the name of the one who is worthy.

  19. Amen.

  20. Amen.

  21. Well, it's a privilege to be here before you this morning.

  22. Like many of you, all of you, I hope,

  23. we've been so blessed as a family

  24. to hear from God's word from this pulpit.

  25. So it really is a humbling

  26. and so it's a mortifying honor

  27. to have the privilege to share this.

  28. So thank you, Pastor Matt and the elders

  29. for allowing me this privilege

  30. to share God's word with you.

  31. Because like you, sometimes

  32. life just gets a little crazy.

  33. We moved here in the middle of a pandemic.

  34. We're supposed to be here for three months or so.

  35. And we're on, I think, what, month 18?

  36. Through it all.

  37. And it's a blessing to come

  38. and to be pointed back to Christ.

  39. And in fact,

  40. that's precisely what we find happening today

  41. in 1 Corinthians 15.

  42. If you're familiar with the church at Corinth,

  43. they're messed up.

  44. Life in their city was a crazy thing.

  45. They had all different kinds of ideologies,

  46. occupations,

  47. a thousand reasons to not follow Christ.

  48. And as you see through the pages of 1 Corinthians

  49. and into 2 Corinthians,

  50. there's even letters that Paul wrote to them

  51. that we don't have.

  52. It was that messed up in Corinth.

  53. And here in 1 Corinthians 15,

  54. Paul reorients them

  55. to keep their priorities straight.

  56. It wasn't about spiritual gifts.

  57. It wasn't about who your favorite Bible teacher was.

  58. It wasn't about anything else

  59. but the good news about Jesus Christ.

  60. And so I invite you,

  61. turn with me to 1 Corinthians 15

  62. if you don't have it open already.

  63. And I want us to read

  64. about the priority of the gospel.

  65. And Paul's going to tell us two simple things.

  66. We need to, as Christians,

  67. we need to be,

  68. we need to receive the gospel

  69. and we need to proclaim the gospel.

  70. Two simple things.

  71. That's where we're going with this today.

  72. So join me in 1 Corinthians 15.

  73. I want to read verses 1 through 11

  74. because this Christ who is worthy

  75. is at the center of what it means

  76. to be a Christ follower,

  77. to be a Christian,

  78. at the center of who we are as a church.

  79. 1 Corinthians 15.

  80. Now I would remind you, brothers,

  81. of the gospel I preach to you,

  82. which you received and which you stand

  83. and by which you're being saved

  84. if you hold fast to the word I preach to you,

  85. unless you believed in vain.

  86. For I delivered to you

  87. as of first importance

  88. what I also received,

  89. that Christ died for our sins

  90. in accordance with the scriptures,

  91. that he was buried,

  92. that he was raised on the third day

  93. in accordance with the scriptures,

  94. and that he appeared to Cephas

  95. and then to the twelve.

  96. Then he appeared to more than 500 brothers

  97. at one time,

  98. most of whom are still alive,

  99. but some have fallen asleep.

  100. And then he appeared to James,

  101. then to all the apostles.

  102. Last of all,

  103. as to one untimely born,

  104. he appeared also to me.

  105. For I am the least of the apostles,

  106. unworthy to be called an apostle,

  107. because I persecuted the church of God.

  108. But by the grace of God,

  109. I am what I am,

  110. and his grace toward me

  111. was not in vain.

  112. On the contrary,

  113. I worked harder than any of them,

  114. though it was not I,

  115. but the grace of God

  116. that is with me.

  117. Whether then it was I or they,

  118. so we preach,

  119. and so you believed.

  120. The verb tenses here

  121. are really important

  122. throughout these first couple verses,

  123. through this opening section,

  124. because Paul is trying to

  125. tenderly,

  126. but firmly remind them,

  127. y'all are crazy.

  128. Y'all forgot who you are.

  129. You forgot your first priority,

  130. and it's our first priority Christian,

  131. it's our first priority church,

  132. to receive the gospel.

  133. They had received it, right?

  134. Look with me there in chapter,

  135. back in verse one,

  136. I would remind you brothers,

  137. he's reminding them,

  138. this is not new territory

  139. for Corinth.

  140. It's probably not new territory

  141. for a lot of us.

  142. If you're like me,

  143. a church kid,

  144. you hear the gospel,

  145. you think,

  146. oh, here we go again.

  147. But Paul's like,

  148. no, no, no, no.

  149. The reason all your crazy's been going on

  150. is because that's your attitude.

  151. You think you've graduated from the gospel.

  152. You think you've been promoted beyond.

  153. No.

  154. Spiritual gifts,

  155. speaking in tongues,

  156. all that other stuff

  157. that in the first 14 chapters here

  158. of 1 Corinthians,

  159. the problem with those problems

  160. are because you forgot.

  161. You let something else

  162. become the first priority Christian.

  163. You let something else

  164. become your first priority church.

  165. So Paul has to remind them

  166. that you received something Christian.

  167. You received the gospel.

  168. And you forget that

  169. to your detriment.

  170. Paul, in fact,

  171. points out just how awkward

  172. and difficult the danger is

  173. as we move in verse 2.

  174. It's an awkward phrase.

  175. This,

  176. if you hold fast

  177. to the right approach to you

  178. unless you believed in vain.

  179. What is Paul talking about there?

  180. He's warning them

  181. about two alternatives, really,

  182. to what you can do

  183. with the gospel.

  184. You can choose

  185. to believe the right thing

  186. insincerely.

  187. A fancy word.

  188. You could be a hypocrite

  189. at its worst.

  190. Or you could just be

  191. sincerely indifferent.

  192. Yeah, I go to church on Sunday.

  193. Yeah, I heard the preacher.

  194. I took killer sermon notes.

  195. I mean, it's like,

  196. he could preach from that.

  197. Or, you know,

  198. yeah, I aced the Sunday school lesson.

  199. I knew the answers

  200. before the teacher told me.

  201. But,

  202. but,

  203. Monday morning,

  204. Thursday afternoon,

  205. Wednesday night,

  206. how's that working out?

  207. You see,

  208. our practice betrays our doctrine.

  209. Our practice betrays

  210. what we truly believe.

  211. And our priorities

  212. throughout that week

  213. betray

  214. what's really our first priority

  215. in this life.

  216. and Paul's trying to remind them,

  217. hey,

  218. you gotta keep the gospel

  219. your first priority.

  220. Otherwise,

  221. maybe,

  222. maybe you don't believe

  223. what you think.

  224. You use that word, Christian,

  225. but I don't think that word

  226. means what you think it means.

  227. Because I'm looking at your life

  228. and I'm not seeing

  229. how

  230. they don't add up.

  231. There's another alternative

  232. that Paul is suggesting

  233. of this idea of believed,

  234. by believing in vain.

  235. It's also the idea that,

  236. well,

  237. maybe,

  238. just maybe,

  239. you believe the wrong thing

  240. sincerely.

  241. And so,

  242. Paul's wanting to remind them,

  243. make sure it's crystal clear.

  244. We'll see this in verses 3

  245. and following here

  246. in a few moments.

  247. He wants them to be crystal clear

  248. that what they believe,

  249. what they receive,

  250. is in point,

  251. in fact,

  252. what Paul gave them

  253. in the first place.

  254. So he's reminding them

  255. because their salvation,

  256. as Paul even says himself,

  257. is God's grace to them.

  258. It's nothing you do.

  259. It's nothing you performed.

  260. He does it for you.

  261. He does it to you.

  262. That's good news.

  263. It doesn't matter

  264. how much Bible you know.

  265. As long as you know the gospel,

  266. as long as you remember it

  267. and don't forget about it,

  268. Christian.

  269. You see,

  270. Paul even

  271. punches it

  272. even further down at us

  273. that

  274. the gospel is the message

  275. that we stand upon

  276. in verse 1.

  277. It's the message

  278. in which you stand upon.

  279. It's the grounds

  280. for all that you do,

  281. Christian.

  282. And notice again,

  283. verse 2.

  284. And it's the gospel

  285. that which you're being saved by.

  286. Now,

  287. I don't mean to

  288. overwhelm with grammar here

  289. for a second,

  290. but

  291. did you notice

  292. that that's like

  293. a present tense verb?

  294. Right?

  295. I'm being saved.

  296. Present perfect

  297. for those who want to

  298. get into it a little bit.

  299. But

  300. Paul's trying to help us

  301. understand, Christian.

  302. It's not,

  303. you don't graduate

  304. from the gospel,

  305. you're sanctified

  306. by the gospel,

  307. and you're saved

  308. by the gospel.

  309. And that's good news.

  310. Until you forget about it.

  311. And then it's not good news

  312. because you've forgotten

  313. and you've gone off

  314. and done all these

  315. other crazy things.

  316. Like,

  317. picked a Bible teacher

  318. that you really love

  319. and that's all you care about

  320. is what he said

  321. and how they said it.

  322. Christ saved you.

  323. Not that.

  324. I mean,

  325. praise God for a good Bible teacher.

  326. I'm not trying to,

  327. but it's a mis,

  328. your priority's

  329. in the wrong spot.

  330. It's about Christ

  331. and what he's done for you

  332. in this good news

  333. gospel message

  334. for you.

  335. And it produces,

  336. and when we,

  337. excuse me,

  338. when we receive

  339. this good news,

  340. it produces fruit

  341. in our lives.

  342. On the one hand,

  343. that act of salvation

  344. where we receive Christ

  345. and become Christians,

  346. we become Christ followers,

  347. but then that ongoing,

  348. secondly,

  349. this idea of receiving

  350. also has that ongoing idea

  351. of internalizing God's word.

  352. How do I live

  353. gospely?

  354. If I could say it that way.

  355. Paul's trying to get us

  356. to remember

  357. that we need to not just

  358. receive it to believe,

  359. but we need to receive it

  360. to live.

  361. What about your life,

  362. Christian,

  363. is gospely?

  364. What about your life

  365. reflects good news

  366. that Christ died for sinners?

  367. What is it about your life,

  368. Christian?

  369. What is it about

  370. the heart attitudes

  371. that you have

  372. that is formed

  373. and transformed

  374. by the gospel?

  375. We need to be reminded

  376. of this gospel,

  377. not just save from it

  378. and graduate on

  379. to other things.

  380. And what's striking to me

  381. is that,

  382. and I'm saying all this,

  383. it's almost as if

  384. the gospel is this

  385. thing over here

  386. and it has to be

  387. delivered to me.

  388. Not just in the act

  389. of salvation,

  390. but daily

  391. as I grow

  392. in my walk

  393. with the Lord.

  394. And so Paul has

  395. a lot to say

  396. about that too

  397. as we look at

  398. the rest of verse 3

  399. and into verse 11

  400. because Paul isn't

  401. just concerned

  402. that we receive

  403. the gospel,

  404. he's also concerned

  405. about what the gospel is

  406. and our first priority

  407. to proclaim

  408. the gospel together.

  409. We receive it

  410. and we proclaim it.

  411. Two very simple points

  412. Paul has here

  413. and along the way

  414. he wants to make sure

  415. you know what that gospel is

  416. because,

  417. again,

  418. I'm not wanting to split hairs

  419. too much here,

  420. but it's interesting

  421. that Paul's choice

  422. of vocabulary here

  423. in verse 1,

  424. I preach to you

  425. the message you received,

  426. it's a little more,

  427. if we were to take this

  428. a little more woodenly,

  429. it's I gospeled

  430. the gospel to you.

  431. He's not using

  432. the usual word for preach

  433. here in verse 1.

  434. He's using the verb gospel

  435. to talk about

  436. the subject gospel.

  437. I want to remind you,

  438. brothers,

  439. of the gospel,

  440. I gospeled to you.

  441. Someone had to tell you,

  442. Christian,

  443. so that you could be

  444. a Christ follower,

  445. just like someone had to

  446. tell the person

  447. that told you,

  448. that told you,

  449. that told you,

  450. that we go all the way

  451. back to Paul

  452. and the apostles

  453. who got it from Jesus,

  454. who got it from

  455. the Father himself

  456. who was sent.

  457. And glory of all glories,

  458. it was written down for us,

  459. inspired by the Holy Spirit,

  460. the Spirit of Truth,

  461. like Pastor Matt taught us

  462. last week,

  463. guiding us

  464. and shaping us

  465. and helping us

  466. to think gospely.

  467. That's the good,

  468. that's part,

  469. that's the good news

  470. applied to your life,

  471. Christian.

  472. Remember,

  473. Paul wants us to remember it,

  474. but he wants us

  475. to also proclaim it.

  476. It's not enough to know it

  477. and to remember it,

  478. it's a message

  479. that we're to proclaim

  480. because how else

  481. is your neighbor

  482. going to hear

  483. the good news about Christ?

  484. You were told,

  485. someone proclaimed it to you,

  486. what about the person

  487. sitting next to you?

  488. What about that girl

  489. across the office way

  490. from you?

  491. What about the student

  492. two desks down from you?

  493. What about,

  494. Paul says in Romans 10,

  495. how will they hear

  496. if no one preaches?

  497. It's on us, church,

  498. it's on us, Christian,

  499. to remember the gospel,

  500. to receive it,

  501. and to proclaim it,

  502. to get it out.

  503. But,

  504. perhaps,

  505. perhaps you're like

  506. the church at Corinth,

  507. or one of the Christians,

  508. probably not everybody

  509. was this way,

  510. but maybe that's just it.

  511. You're not sure

  512. what the gospel is.

  513. Could you,

  514. if I had you come up here

  515. right now,

  516. what's the gospel, Christian?

  517. What would you say?

  518. Paul gives us

  519. four simple statements

  520. about what the,

  521. that comprise

  522. the gospel message.

  523. the bare bones,

  524. the most,

  525. if you could only say this,

  526. what would you say?

  527. Paul tells us here

  528. in verses 3 through 10.

  529. Christ died for our sins

  530. according to the scriptures.

  531. He was buried.

  532. He was raised from the dead

  533. on the third day

  534. according to the scriptures.

  535. And he was seen.

  536. Four simple things.

  537. That's it.

  538. That's the message

  539. that saves.

  540. Not my testimony

  541. about how I

  542. received the gospel.

  543. That's important.

  544. But how Timothy Hine

  545. heard the good news

  546. about Jesus

  547. and placed his trust,

  548. that's not the good news.

  549. The good news is

  550. Christ died for our sins

  551. according to the scriptures.

  552. He was buried.

  553. He was raised

  554. from the dead

  555. on the third day

  556. according to the scriptures.

  557. And he was seen

  558. by his followers.

  559. That's the good news.

  560. We could say more,

  561. couldn't we?

  562. I mean,

  563. what about

  564. the virgin birth?

  565. He was fully God.

  566. He was fully man.

  567. He was raised

  568. from the dead.

  569. Notice the passive tense

  570. of that verb there.

  571. Someone raised.

  572. He was raised.

  573. He didn't raise himself.

  574. He was raised

  575. from the dead.

  576. Doctrine of the Trinity,

  577. God, Father, Son,

  578. and Holy Spirit.

  579. According to the scriptures,

  580. which scriptures?

  581. Isaiah 52 and 53

  582. like we read earlier.

  583. All the prophets,

  584. all the law.

  585. Paul says elsewhere

  586. that the whole law

  587. and prophets

  588. point to the coming

  589. of Christ.

  590. We could talk

  591. about those things,

  592. but if we think about it,

  593. that's really just

  594. meat on the bones,

  595. isn't it?

  596. The gospel,

  597. the message that saves

  598. is decidedly simple.

  599. Christ died for our sins

  600. according to the scriptures.

  601. He was buried.

  602. He was raised

  603. on the third day

  604. according to the scriptures.

  605. He was seen.

  606. That's the message

  607. that saves.

  608. And when we,

  609. when we get too far

  610. on a rabbit trail

  611. from that,

  612. Paul's trying to warn us

  613. it can lead to some scary place.

  614. It can lead to some weird

  615. messed up places.

  616. You see,

  617. you can't take away

  618. from the gospel.

  619. You also can't add to it.

  620. Let me do a little gospel math

  621. if you will.

  622. If you can,

  623. I'm not a mathematician

  624. so forgive me here

  625. if I get dangerous.

  626. But the gospel is actually,

  627. it's so simple,

  628. it's scary in a sense.

  629. The gospel

  630. plus something else,

  631. it's not the gospel.

  632. It's not good news.

  633. Jesus died and rose again

  634. for our sins

  635. according to the scriptures

  636. plus you praying super hard.

  637. That's not the gospel.

  638. Christ died and rose again

  639. for our sins

  640. according to the scriptures

  641. and you show up

  642. every Sunday early.

  643. Not the gospel.

  644. Conversely,

  645. the gospel

  646. minus something

  647. is also not the gospel.

  648. What if Jesus

  649. wasn't really God?

  650. He was just an angel

  651. who took on flesh.

  652. Even in the first century

  653. people were saying that.

  654. Even today people say that.

  655. It takes away from the gospel.

  656. Well, maybe,

  657. maybe he was fully God

  658. but was he really human?

  659. I mean,

  660. maybe he was just like

  661. God in a man's suit.

  662. You know,

  663. he just came down

  664. and zipped up the tuxedo

  665. of human flesh

  666. and he looked like God.

  667. Again,

  668. a problem the church dealt with

  669. back in the first

  670. and second centuries

  671. and yet,

  672. you hear that today,

  673. don't you?

  674. It's not the gospel.

  675. You can't take anything

  676. away from this

  677. without changing

  678. the gospel message.

  679. Christ died for our sins

  680. according to the scriptures.

  681. He was buried.

  682. He was raised from the dead

  683. on the third day

  684. according to the scriptures

  685. and he was seen

  686. by his followers.

  687. That's the message.

  688. That's the good news

  689. that saves

  690. and everything flows

  691. out of that.

  692. Christ was crucified

  693. because he claimed

  694. to die on the cross.

  695. He claimed that his death

  696. was atoning for sin.

  697. He was crucified

  698. because he said

  699. he was God's son.

  700. He was crucified

  701. because he claimed

  702. to be king of kings

  703. and lord of lords.

  704. Martyrs,

  705. blood flowed

  706. for this message.

  707. Christians,

  708. so let's be careful

  709. to remember

  710. what this gospel is

  711. because it's not

  712. a lot of things

  713. that we oftentimes

  714. want to add

  715. to the gospel

  716. but if we really

  717. want to pray,

  718. if we really want

  719. to split that hair,

  720. we're really talking

  721. about the gospel

  722. and the effects

  723. of the gospel,

  724. how it flows

  725. into other facets

  726. of our life,

  727. how it permeates

  728. and how we internalize

  729. it as a people,

  730. as individuals,

  731. how we wish society

  732. would absorb

  733. that gospel message,

  734. that good news.

  735. I mean,

  736. strictly speaking,

  737. even some of our,

  738. I'm all for

  739. penal substitutionary

  740. atonement

  741. and justification

  742. and these things

  743. but those are all,

  744. those are the,

  745. that's the outflowing

  746. of the gospel.

  747. That's the gospel

  748. applied,

  749. isn't it?

  750. That I receive the good,

  751. that God changes me

  752. so that I receive

  753. the good news

  754. and I'm made

  755. right before him.

  756. That's the result

  757. of this gospel,

  758. bare bones,

  759. gospel message

  760. and that's good news.

  761. But maybe you're like,

  762. maybe you've met

  763. that person before

  764. who maybe forgets

  765. that sometimes

  766. and they know more

  767. about what this theologian

  768. or that theologian said

  769. than what the good news

  770. itself is.

  771. Or maybe you've met

  772. that person

  773. person who's so hung up

  774. on certain theological themes.

  775. These are all good things.

  776. But they're not the gospel.

  777. They're not the good,

  778. they're not the first priority.

  779. And just like the church

  780. at Corinth,

  781. we can look at them

  782. 2,000 years removed

  783. and think,

  784. oh, silly kids.

  785. They didn't know

  786. what they're doing.

  787. We've got,

  788. we've grown up,

  789. we've matured.

  790. No,

  791. we still have

  792. the same sinful heart.

  793. We still live in a city

  794. much like theirs

  795. that was prone

  796. to find all different

  797. kinds of ways

  798. to do things

  799. that offend God.

  800. And but for His grace

  801. we would do the same

  802. just as well.

  803. But when our priority

  804. is first and foremost

  805. fixed on Christ

  806. and His good news,

  807. the effects,

  808. it changes everything.

  809. It should change everything.

  810. If it doesn't change

  811. everything for you,

  812. what did you receive?

  813. Because the gospel

  814. changes everything.

  815. Maybe not everything

  816. all at once.

  817. It takes time.

  818. I'm still lazy.

  819. The gospel's still

  820. working on me on that.

  821. What's the gospel

  822. working on for you

  823. still, Christian?

  824. Is it working on you?

  825. No?

  826. No?

  827. The gospel

  828. can and does

  829. transform people

  830. and society.

  831. But even social change

  832. and social justice

  833. aren't the gospel

  834. message itself.

  835. It's a result

  836. of the gospel.

  837. It's fruit

  838. of the gospel.

  839. And that's good news too.

  840. We have to keep

  841. the gospel

  842. our first priority.

  843. We keep it the first priority

  844. by receiving it.

  845. We keep it the first priority

  846. by proclaiming it.

  847. When our message changes

  848. to something other than

  849. Christ crucified

  850. and resurrected,

  851. we've moved the chains.

  852. We've changed the target.

  853. We've confused our priorities.

  854. And history tells the story

  855. of many a church,

  856. many a Christian

  857. who has lost sight of this

  858. and fallen away.

  859. We can think of institutions

  860. that were built

  861. to train ministers

  862. that now don't even acknowledge

  863. the good news about Christ.

  864. We can think of

  865. numerous friends,

  866. maybe you have friends

  867. or family

  868. who said they were Christians,

  869. followed Christ for a season,

  870. and then...

  871. And now,

  872. look at them.

  873. Their priorities

  874. are all over the place.

  875. But not...

  876. Not here.

  877. Not centered on Christ.

  878. It's God's grace

  879. that...

  880. It's because of God's grace,

  881. Paul says in verse 10,

  882. that He is what He is,

  883. and you are what you are,

  884. Christian.

  885. Let's not add

  886. or take away from that.

  887. Now,

  888. receiving the salvation,

  889. receiving the gospel...

  890. I come at this as a church kid.

  891. You have to forgive me.

  892. I've heard this a million times.

  893. You've heard this a million times too,

  894. church kids, right?

  895. Growing up in the church,

  896. and you say to yourself,

  897. so what am I supposed to do?

  898. What...

  899. Jesus did it all.

  900. He paid it all.

  901. He's the foundation I stand on.

  902. He's what I received.

  903. I can't affect...

  904. I can't change my status before God.

  905. He does that.

  906. But how do I...

  907. How do I live this out?

  908. What do I do?

  909. How do I live different?

  910. Do I need to go be that guy

  911. on the corner

  912. with the sign

  913. and the, you know,

  914. the Lord is coming?

  915. No, that's not what Paul's saying here.

  916. What Paul's saying here

  917. is we need to order our lives

  918. around the gospel.

  919. And it begins

  920. even with our proclamation of the gospel.

  921. Before you preach the gospel

  922. to someone else, Christian,

  923. do you preach the gospel to yourself?

  924. daily.

  925. Reminding yourself,

  926. I...

  927. He died for our sins,

  928. Paul says in verse 3.

  929. My sins.

  930. And it was according to God's plan.

  931. He was...

  932. The Son of God

  933. was buried in a tomb

  934. for three days

  935. because of my sin.

  936. He was raised to life

  937. just like God promised

  938. according to scriptures

  939. three days later.

  940. What great news, Christian.

  941. You have a hope.

  942. You're not dead

  943. in your trespasses

  944. and sins anymore.

  945. So why was that

  946. a temptation again?

  947. Why...

  948. What was that thing

  949. that was teasing you,

  950. flirting with you?

  951. Take five minutes each morning.

  952. Preach the gospel to yourself.

  953. I can't tell you

  954. how much gospel good it'll do you.

  955. It's...

  956. It's the best news

  957. your soul could ever receive

  958. that day, today.

  959. And this is why,

  960. like, I think it was Pastor Nick

  961. a couple weeks back,

  962. abiding in Christ.

  963. Spending time in God's word

  964. and prayer.

  965. Reminding yourself of the gospel.

  966. Reading it.

  967. Reading his promises

  968. in the Old Testament.

  969. Reading the promise,

  970. how he fulfills those promises

  971. in the New.

  972. Oh, it's words of life.

  973. It's not just...

  974. Oh, here we go.

  975. If that's your heart attitude, Christian,

  976. what did you receive again?

  977. What did you receive again?

  978. What...

  979. What...

  980. What are you standing on again?

  981. Maybe for some of us,

  982. Paul's exhortation here

  983. about proclaiming the gospel

  984. is our problem.

  985. Maybe you're a little stale

  986. in your faith

  987. because you've not talked

  988. to anyone about it in a while.

  989. You haven't talked to yourself

  990. about it.

  991. You haven't preached it to yourself.

  992. You haven't preached it to anybody.

  993. You haven't proclaimed it.

  994. You haven't delivered a message

  995. to anybody,

  996. including yourself.

  997. Maybe you're at that place

  998. in your spiritual journey,

  999. in your walk with Christ, Christian,

  1000. where part of the...

1001. of your walk with the Lord

  1002. is you've not...

  1003. you've not...

1004. you don't know how to articulate

  1005. the gospel

1006. and what a great way

  1007. to work that out

  1008. than to tell...

  1009. share with somebody.

  1010. Proclaim the message.

  1011. Deliver the message,

1012. the good news that saved you.

1013. It's what you stand on.

1014. Hopefully it's what you bleed

1015. when life presses in on you.

  1016. Can you articulate it?

  1017. Tell somebody.

  1018. Try it out.

1019. It might be an epic fail.

  1020. That's fine.

  1021. That's fine.

1022. God's word never returns void.

  1023. But are you doing

1024. what God's called you to do?

  1025. Receive it.

  1026. Proclaim it.

  1027. Maybe along the way,

  1028. if I need...

1029. I need help with this.

1030. That's the beauty of the church.

  1031. We do this together.

1032. It's not about how awesome

  1033. she is at this

1034. and he is at that

  1035. and she's...

  1036. We're here together

  1037. to help each other,

  1038. to grow in Christ.

1039. That's all the more reason

  1040. to talk to someone

  1041. about the gospel.

  1042. If you're nervous

  1043. to tell someone

  1044. who doesn't know,

1045. talk with someone who does.

  1046. Hey, am I getting...

1047. Am I missing something here?

  1048. We're...

  1049. We're not all called

1050. to be PhDs in New Testament

  1051. and that's okay.

  1052. That's a good thing.

1053. Most of you shouldn't do that.

  1054. Please don't.

1055. But maybe you are called to that.

  1056. Praise God.

1057. Do it and help us all

  1058. figure this stuff out.

  1059. You don't need a PhD

  1060. to share the gospel.

  1061. You don't even need

  1062. a primary school degree.

  1063. You don't even need

  1064. a high school diploma.

  1065. You just need

  1066. the gospel message itself.

  1067. It preaches.

  1068. Do you know it?

  1069. Tell somebody.

  1070. Talk to another Christian

1071. about it and help them...

  1072. Help each other

  1073. get better at talking

  1074. about the gospel

1075. and then go tell others

1076. who don't know the good news.

1077. Maybe you've been doing it

  1078. for a while

  1079. and you just need

  1080. a fresh perspective.

1081. That's where great Christian books

  1082. can be so helpful.

  1083. There's a thousand...

1084. There's thousands of them today.

1085. There's no reason not to

1086. get into that broader conversation

  1087. that's so accessible.

  1088. So ask me afterwards.

1089. We can talk about more of those.

  1090. But the good news

1091. is that not only can we

  1092. receive the gospel,

1093. we can grow in our understanding

  1094. of it

1095. and we have each other

  1096. to do it with.

  1097. What great news

1098. for a life caught up

  1099. in a pandemic

  1100. where we're isolated

  1101. from each other.

1102. These are the good news.

  1103. These are the results

1104. of our good news, Christian.

1105. But I want to close...

  1106. I want to close

  1107. by asking

1108. and talking for a moment

1109. to those who don't follow Christ.

1110. Maybe you're here seeking God.

  1111. You're seeking for something.

  1112. You're still trying

  1113. to figure it out.

  1114. I got great...

  1115. It's all right here.

  1116. It is super simple.

  1117. Now I know

  1118. even Paul faces

  1119. if you go back

  1120. and read 1 Corinthians 1,

  1121. it sounds foolish.

  1122. It's a stumbling...

  1123. It's foolish

  1124. for the sophisticated.

  1125. At least that's how

  1126. it can sound sometimes.

  1127. And maybe you come

  1128. from another religious tradition

  1129. and you think

  1130. it just doesn't...

  1131. It doesn't add up.

  1132. It doesn't match

  1133. my tradition

1134. that I grew up with.

  1135. Precisely.

  1136. Look, friend.

  1137. God exists

  1138. and He spoke.

  1139. And He spoke

  1140. good news of life

  1141. because He promised

  1142. to deal with

  1143. the one thing

  1144. you and I can't solve

  1145. on our own.

  1146. The fact that

  1147. we're lost in seeking.

  1148. What you're looking for

1149. is how to be made

  1150. right with God.

1151. You may not be able to...

  1152. It doesn't...

1153. Maybe it's not that way

  1154. in your head

  1155. but what Scripture

1156. is trying to help us see

1157. is that is what you're missing.

  1158. You are not right

  1159. with God

  1160. because there's stuff

  1161. separating you from God.

  1162. Stuff inside you,

  1163. stuff in your life.

  1164. The Bible uses

1165. a big word called sin

  1166. to describe that.

  1167. And the...

  1168. And that's the...

  1169. That's the bad news,

  1170. admittedly.

  1171. We're separated from God

  1172. from our sin.

  1173. But the good news

1174. is He did something about

  1175. while we were still

  1176. seeking.

  1177. While we were still

  1178. hostile.

  1179. While we were still

1180. alien and foreign to Him,

  1181. He,

1182. because of His great love

1183. with which He loved us,

  1184. sent His Son,

  1185. Jesus Christ,

1186. to die on the cross

  1187. for our sins

  1188. according to the Scriptures.

  1189. It really happened.

  1190. He really died.

  1191. He really rose again.

  1192. And people saw it

  1193. and wrote it down.

1194. And it's the best news,

  1195. my friend.

  1196. It's what you're looking for.

  1197. It's what you need.

  1198. It's what saves.

1199. It's what gives us hope

  1200. for this life

  1201. no matter what comes.

  1202. In fact,

  1203. that's what the rest

1204. of 1 Corinthians tells us.

  1205. 1 Corinthians 15

  1206. talks about

  1207. is the hope

1208. that we have in Christ

  1209. because of this gospel.

  1210. It's not about

  1211. what you do.

  1212. It's about what Jesus

  1213. has done

1214. and what He's going to do.

  1215. And that's...

  1216. That's good news.

  1217. It's the best news

1218. if we would but receive it

  1219. by repentance

  1220. and faith.

  1221. I don't know about you, friend,

1222. but I want to invite you

  1223. to receive that gift.

  1224. And Christian,

  1225. brothers and sisters,

1226. this is our good news.

  1227. Don't forget it.

  1228. Don't let something else

  1229. take first priority.

1230. because it's only just good news.

  1231. It's the best news.

  1232. Let's pray.

  1233. Gracious Heavenly Father,

1234. thank You for the good news

1235. that Christ died on the cross for us.

1236. Thank You for the good news

  1237. that our one foundation

1238. is not how much I know

  1239. about Your Word.

  1240. It's not how spiritual I perform.
