  1. Good morning, church.

  2. Our sermon text today is from John chapter 17, verses 1 through 5.

    John 17:1–5

  3. It can be found in your pew Bibles on page 849.

  4. And here we continue with Jesus on the last night of his earthly life.

  5. He has just finished a long session teaching the disciples where he explained that he is

  6. the way, the truth, and the life.

  7. And because of this, he told the disciples that they should abide in him like a vine's

  8. branches abide in the vine itself.

  9. And Jesus further prophesied his own imminent departure from this world.

  10. But he also gave assurance of his victory on the cross, even while warning about coming

  11. tribulations.

  12. And lastly, Jesus spoke to the disciples about the arrival of the Holy Spirit, who would

  13. soon come and turn the disciples' grief into joy.

  14. Now, in the passage we have before us, Jesus carries out one of his final acts before he

  15. is arrested.

  16. He prays a prayer.

  17. And before we read his prayer, let's offer up a prayer of our own to God.

  18. Father, we come to you today in the name of your son, Jesus.

  19. Father, we're about to read one of the last things he prayed before he was crucified.

  20. And we ask that you give us insight and discernment about his prayer.

  21. Teach us, Father.

  22. Teach us, through the prayer of Jesus, to be like Jesus.

  23. Teach us to pray like him, to desire what he desired, and to give you glory like he gave

  24. you glory.

  25. And we pray this in his name.

  26. Amen.

  27. So Jesus' prayer goes like this.

  28. Again, we're in chapter 17, verse 1 through 5 of the Gospel of John.

  29. When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said,

  30. Father, the hour has come.

  31. Glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you.

  32. Since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you

  33. have given him.

  34. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you

  35. have sent.

  36. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

  37. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory that I had with you before the

  38. world existed.

  39. What is glory?

  40. Jesus' whole prayer centers on this concept of glory.

  41. Jesus asked the Father to glorify him, that he may glorify the Father.

  42. He says that he was in the glory of the Father before the world existed.

  43. And he requests that he be glorified with that glory once again.

  44. But what is glory?

  45. Our world will say that glory is that which is honorable or prestigious or that which is

  46. eminent or majestic or beautiful.

  47. And today, glorious things and glorious deeds and glorious people are those who are famous

  48. and attractive and wealthy and powerful.

  49. And in a way, at least, Scripture agrees with this definition.

  50. God is glorious.

  51. And that means he is majestic.

  52. He's indescribably beautiful.

  53. He's unimaginably powerful.

  54. He possesses more honor than we can put into words.

  55. And this is witnessed throughout all the Scriptures.

  56. For example, we heard all these things in the passage that was read earlier today from

  57. Revelation chapters 4 and 5, that famous heavenly throne room scene where John is taken up by

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  58. the Spirit into the throne room of God himself in heaven.

  59. And he sees God seated on a throne, surrounded by a rainbow.

  60. And from the throne come flashes of lightning, peals of thunder.

  61. And spread out before the throne is a sea of glass like crystal.

  62. And in the throne room are an uncountable number of angels focused on God and worshiping him.

  63. It's quite a glorious scene, isn't it?

  64. Even by the world's definition of glory.

  65. But was this the glory that Jesus was praying for in his prayer?

  66. Is this the glory that Jesus meant when he said,

  67. Father, the hour has come.

  68. Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you.

  69. Was he asking for power and authority and majesty?

  70. Friends, what I'm going to say today is that when it comes to true glory,

  71. the world, as with so many things, has understood part of the issue,

  72. but is missing out on perhaps the most vital point.

  73. The glory that Jesus is praying for in our passage before us,

  74. the true glory that Jesus asked for,

  75. it does involve beauty and majesty and splendor and power.

  76. And Jesus is no doubt alluding to that glorious throne room

  77. that we heard about in Revelation,

  78. where everything is focused on God.

  79. But there's something else too,

  80. something so important, in fact,

  81. that it involves the entire Christian message.

  82. And if we pay attention to the words of Jesus' prayer in our passage today,

  83. I think Jesus himself gives us a clue about this missing aspect of true glory.

  84. You can find it in verse 1,

  85. where Jesus says,

  86. Father, the hour has come.

  87. Glorify your Son.

  88. Remember the hour it was when Jesus prayed this prayer.

  89. He prayed this the hour before he was going to be arrested and crucified.

  90. And so the hour,

  91. the hour that had come,

  92. was the hour when Jesus would sacrifice himself for the sins of the world.

  93. And this sacrifice is inextricably linked with the glory that Jesus prays for.

  94. And so the true glory for which Jesus prays

  95. is the glory of laying down his life as a ransom for many.

  96. This is the perfection of glory.

  97. And any definition of glory,

  98. any explanation of real, true, authentic, and eternal biblical glory,

  99. any seeking after the glory of God must understand

  100. that true biblical glory involves humbly submitting to suffering.

  101. Jesus teaches us in his prayer that to obtain true glory,

  102. you must forsake earthly power and majesty and honor

  103. and even lay your life down for others.

  104. This is why in his earthly ministry,

  105. Jesus would say the Son of Man came not to be served,

  106. but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  107. That is, Jesus did not come to gain earthly power and majesty.

  108. He came to lay his life down as a ransom for many

  109. and by that to gain the perfection of eternal glory.

  110. And this is also why,

  111. in that glorious heavenly throne room scene in Revelation,

  112. with all the splendor and beauty and power and fame and honor

  113. that's given to God in heaven,

  114. there also is Jesus standing on the throne of God

  115. as a slain lamb.

  116. Do you remember that part of the passage that we heard earlier?

  117. All the majesty of heaven is described in that passage,

  118. the beauty and the grandeur,

  119. and yet there on the throne with God

  120. is a slain lamb, our dear Jesus,

  121. who suffered for the sins of the world.

  122. And the passage says that all heaven cries out about Jesus,

  123. worthy are you for you were slain.

  124. Worthy is the lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth

  125. and wisdom and might and honor and glory.

  126. Jesus is worthy to receive all these glorious things

  127. because he was slain for us.

  128. You see, church, glory is not just what the world says it is.

  129. True, biblical, godly glory is gained by joyfully suffering

  130. and especially by suffering for the sake of others.

  131. This is the glory that Jesus asked for when he prayed to the Father,

  132. the hour has come, glorify your son.

  133. And God answered his prayer.

  134. He did glorify him through the cross of his suffering.

  135. Brothers and sisters,

  136. is this the glory you are seeking in your life?

  137. Or are you seeking after the world's glory,

  138. the glory that will not suffer and that will not risk

  139. and that will not sacrifice?

  140. The kind of glory that lords it over everyone else.

  141. Because to seek the glory of God is to suffer for others like Jesus did.

  142. And this biblical glory is not unique to the Son of God.

  143. This glory is also shared by God the Father.

  144. If we turn to Jesus' prayer, we can see this very clearly.

  145. Jesus prays in John 17, verse 1,

    John 17:1

  146. The hour has come.

  147. Here Jesus asks for that glory that we've spoken of,

  148. that suffering glory.

  149. But notice that just as Jesus the Son possesses

  150. and seeks that long-suffering, self-sacrificial glory,

  151. so the Father also possesses that same sacrificial glory.

  152. The Son has this glory because he suffered by laying down his life.

  153. But the Father has this glory because he so loved the world,

  154. he sent his one and only Son to suffer.

  155. You see, church, Jesus' prayer for glory reveals this wonderful truth,

  156. that God's glory is made perfect in suffering.

  157. The Son knows the glory of sacrificing himself for his enemies,

  158. and the Father knows the glory of sending his Son to die for his enemies.

  159. Therefore, God knows both what it is to sacrifice himself

  160. and what it is to send his beloved Son as a sacrifice.

  161. And in this, God's glory is perfected because he knows both of what it is to suffer

  162. and what it is to have someone you love suffer.

  163. Friends, I wonder,

  164. how are you suffering today?

  165. Is God using that suffering in your life and working it into eternal glory

  166. like he did with his Son?

  167. There are many kinds of suffering in this world,

  168. and we have many kinds of suffering in our church.

  169. But whatever you're suffering today, whatever it may be,

  170. all of it, whether you, when you humbly submit it to God,

  171. will be used by God to make you more like God and to share in his glory.

  172. This is the great secret of the Christian life,

  173. that as a Christian, whenever you humbly submit to suffering,

  174. then you draw closer to the one who humbly suffered for you,

  175. and he will use your suffering for his glory and also for yours.

  176. And this is true whether your suffering is in the form of physical pain or mental pain.

  177. It's true whether you've been harmed accidentally or harmed intentionally.

  178. This is even true if you're suffering because of your own sin.

  179. Then, if you repent and submit your suffering to God,

  180. God is so glorious and powerful that he will redeem your suffering

  181. and make it work for good by the power of Jesus Christ.

  182. And so today, whether you're suffering because of the faith

  183. or because you made a mistake,

  184. whether you're suffering because someone you love is hurting

  185. or even because you've hurt someone you love,

  186. whatever the cause of your suffering,

  187. Jesus knows what it is like to suffer.

  188. And if you submit it to God,

  189. then he will use it to make you more like him

  190. and you'll share in his glory.

  191. Therefore, church, if you're suffering in this hour,

  192. be encouraged by the suffering of Jesus and his prayer for glory.

  193. Submit to suffering.

  194. Repent if you need to.

  195. And remember that there is an eternal weight of glory

  196. prepared for you and your suffering.

  197. This is why the Apostle Paul wrote these words to the Corinthians.

  198. He said,

  199. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed.

  200. We're perplexed, but not driven to despair.

  201. We're persecuted, but not forsaken.

  202. Struck down, but not destroyed.

  203. We always carry in our bodies the death of Jesus

  204. so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.

  205. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake,

  206. that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

  207. So we do not lose heart.

  208. Though our outer self is wasting away,

  209. our inner self is being renewed day by day.

  210. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory

  211. beyond all comparison.

  212. As we look for the things that are seen,

  213. as we look not to the things that are seen,

  214. but to the things that are unseen.

  215. For the things that are seen are transient,

  216. but the things that are unseen are eternal.

  217. In Jesus' prayer for glory,

  218. Jesus was looking for those unseen things in heaven

  219. where that eternal weight of glory was being prepared for him

  220. through his suffering.

  221. This is why we follow Scripture in calling Jesus the Lord of glory

  222. and why we confess that Jesus holds all the power

  223. and all authority on account of the glory that he's been given.

  224. If we return to Jesus' prayer in John chapter 17,

    John 17 chapter mention

  225. we see that he speaks about this power

  226. which he has been given as the Lord of glory.

  227. And also what our responsibility is to him because of it.

  228. He says,

  229. Father, the hour has come.

  230. Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you

  231. since you have given him authority over all flesh

  232. to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

  233. Now notice what Jesus says here.

  234. First, Jesus, as the Lord of glory, is in charge.

  235. God has given him authority over all flesh.

  236. So it doesn't matter who we are or where we are.

  237. It doesn't matter what color our skin is or what our language is.

  238. It doesn't matter what culture we are or even what our religion is.

  239. Whether we recognize it or not,

  240. Jesus has authority over us and everyone else.

  241. But he uses this authority to give eternal life to all whom the God,

  242. God the Father, has given to him.

  243. God, in his mystical foreknowledge and from his great love,

  244. has rescued those whom he chose from the wrath that was coming because of our sins.

  245. And he's given us eternal life through Jesus Christ.

  246. The only responsibility that remains for us

  247. is to humbly submit to his judgment

  248. concerning the gift of eternal life.

  249. But what is this eternal life?

  250. Jesus gives us the answer in verse 3.

  251. He says,

  252. And this is eternal life that they know you,

  253. the only true God,

  254. and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

  255. Jesus explains here that eternal life is to know God

  256. and Jesus Christ whom he sent.

  257. And as the Lord of glory,

  258. Jesus is the focus of all things.

  259. He's the focus of life itself.

  260. He's the ultimate goal, meaning, source,

  261. the cause and result of all things.

  262. All things flow from him and all things flow to him.

  263. And so eternal life is to know him

  264. and God the Father who sent him.

  265. Our responsibility, therefore, on this earth is to know Jesus.

  266. And let me tell you,

  267. there's nothing better than knowing Jesus.

  268. Jesus continues his prayer.

  269. In verse 4, he says,

  270. I glorified you on earth,

  271. having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

  272. Jesus glorified God the Father on earth

  273. because he accomplished the work

  274. that the Father gave him to do.

  275. But what was that work?

  276. What was it actually?

  277. Well, here is a beautiful truth, church.

  278. The work which God gave Christ to perform was you.

  279. That work was to save sinners,

  280. even sinners like you.

  281. His work was to save you

  282. by defeating death on the cross

  283. and rising on the third day.

  284. And according to Jesus' prayer,

  285. he finished the job.

  286. It's already done.

  287. I said that nothing could be better

  288. than knowing Jesus, the Lord of glory,

  289. but perhaps I can say

  290. the only thing better is if that work

  291. of bringing about a reconciled relationship with God

  292. is not just in the future,

  293. but has already been done by God

  294. on the cross.

  295. And in a way,

  296. this wasn't just completed 2,000 years ago

  297. in Jerusalem

  298. when Jesus was crucified on earth.

  299. This work goes all the way back

  300. to the beginning of time itself.

  301. In verse 5, Jesus prays,

  302. And now, Father,

  303. glorify me in your presence

  304. with the glory that I had with you

  305. before the world existed.

  306. Jesus explains that not only did he exist

  307. before the world began,

  308. but he was in glory

  309. with God the Father

  310. before the world began.

  311. And we must all understand

  312. that by this glory,

  313. Jesus means that true,

  314. self-sacrificial, biblical glory

  315. that only comes through suffering.

  316. You see, the Father and the Son

  317. had this kind of glory

  318. before the world began

  319. because before time,

  320. the Father, in his secret wisdom,

  321. knew of his plan of salvation.

  322. He knew that he would send his Son to die

  323. and the Son knew

  324. that he would lay his life down.

  325. This is why I think

  326. the best translations

  327. of Revelation 13, 18

  328. say that Jesus is a Lamb of God

  329. who was slain

  330. before the foundation of the world

  331. because in a sense, he was.

  332. All of God's own suffering

  333. was known by God with certainty

  334. in his hidden wisdom

  335. before the world began.

  336. And so, in a manner of speaking,

  337. that suffering was known

  338. and experienced by God

  339. and therefore,

  340. the Father and the Son

  341. were in glory with one another

  342. from the very beginning.

  343. In his letters,

  344. the Apostle Paul speaks

  345. about God's glorious plan

  346. of salvation

  347. which he made

  348. before all eternity

  349. for glory.

  350. He says in 1 Corinthians 2, 7, 8,

  351. But we impart a secret,

  352. the hidden wisdom of God

  353. which God decreed

  354. before the ages

  355. for our glory.

  356. None of the rulers

  357. of this age understood this

  358. for if they had,

  359. they would not have crucified

  360. the Lord of glory.

  361. And Paul also says

  362. in his letter to the Colossians,

  363. 1, 26 through 27,

  364. he says,

  365. The mystery hidden

  366. for ages and generations

  367. but now revealed to the saints.

  368. To them,

  369. God chose to make known

  370. how great among the Gentiles

  371. are the riches

  372. of the glory of this mystery

  373. which is Christ in you,

  374. the hope of glory.

  375. Friends,

  376. the sum of what I'm saying

  377. is this,

  378. just as God had plans

  379. for his own glory

  380. before the foundation

  381. of the world,

  382. so he also had plans

  383. for your glory

  384. and just as he had plans

  385. to use his own suffering

  386. for glory,

  387. so he also has plans

  388. to make your suffering

  389. into glory too.

  390. Church,

  391. if you're suffering today,

  392. I want to tell you

  393. that you are not forgotten

  394. by God.

  395. For in the same way

  396. that God knew

  397. of his own suffering,

  398. so he knows

  399. of yours also.

  400. And in the same way

  401. that God redeemed

  402. his own suffering,

  403. so he will also

  404. redeem yours.

  405. Your hardship

  406. and your suffering

  407. were known by God

  408. before the beginning

  409. of the world.

  410. Every drop you have bled,

  411. every tear you have shed

  412. has been known by God

  413. and is known by God

  414. from all eternity.

  415. And just as the Father

  416. and Son

  417. were together in glory

  418. from the very beginning,

  419. so God is welcoming you

  420. into his own life

  421. through his suffering.

  422. And then through

  423. your suffering,

  424. he's preparing

  425. and strengthening you

  426. to carry an eternal

  427. weight of glory.

  428. Friends,

  429. Jesus' prayer

  430. has covered

  431. many important points

  432. in our Christian life.

  433. glory,

  434. eternal life,

  435. knowing God,

  436. the power

  437. and sovereignty

  438. of Jesus,

  439. the exclusive devotion

  440. we owe to Jesus.

  441. And there are many ways

  442. that these comfort us.

  443. But I want to turn now

  444. to address those of us

  445. who may not find

  446. all of these truths

  447. about the authority

  448. of Jesus

  449. and his sovereignty

  450. to be comforting,

  451. or perhaps to those

  452. who struggle

  453. with explaining

  454. these truths

  455. to others

  456. in our community

  457. and our world.

  458. And let me give you

  459. some examples.

  460. Our world often claims

  461. that there are many ways

  462. to God

  463. and many paths.

  464. And because of this,

  465. our world at times

  466. can recoil

  467. from the idea

  468. that Jesus has authority

  469. over everyone

  470. or that he's the only way

  471. to God

  472. as Jesus prayed

  473. in his prayer.

  474. Often also,

  475. our world

  476. and even our fleshly selves,

  477. we desire to be in power,

  478. we desire to be in control,

  479. we want to be in charge,

  480. and so the idea

  481. that eternal life

  482. ultimately,

  483. as Jesus prayed,

  484. ultimately depends

  485. not on us

  486. but on God

  487. and whom he chooses

  488. can grate against us

  489. and rankle us.

  490. Often we want to be

  491. the ultimate arbiter

  492. and decider

  493. of our fate.

  494. And thirdly,

  495. the world can also

  496. be aggravated

  497. by the idea

  498. that for Christians,

  499. eternal life

  500. is to know God

  501. and Jesus Christ

  502. as Jesus makes clear

  503. in his prayer.

  504. this kind of knowing

  505. or this kind of knowledge

  506. can make Christians

  507. sometimes come off

  508. as arrogant know-it-alls

  509. and sadly,

  510. we can all think

  511. of times

  512. when this has happened.

  513. So these three truths

  514. that Jesus prays about

  515. in his prayer

  516. can for some

  517. be troubling

  518. instead of comforting.

  519. The notion

  520. that Jesus has authority

  521. over all people

  522. or that he gives

  523. eternal life

  524. to those whom God

  525. has chosen

  526. or thirdly,

  527. that eternal life

  528. is to know God

  529. and Jesus Christ.

  530. But friends,

  531. if you're troubled

  532. by one or all of these,

  533. if you find some of them

  534. difficult to accept,

  535. then I want to suggest

  536. a different way

  537. of looking at them,

  538. a way that I hope

  539. will help you appreciate

  540. their beauty

  541. and their glory.

  542. Let's start with

  543. Jesus' power

  544. and authority

  545. over all flesh.

  546. As we've read this morning

  547. in Jesus' prayer,

  548. he possesses power

  549. over all peoples

  550. and over all nations,

  551. over every tribe

  552. and over every language.

  553. Jesus has authority

  554. over all of them

  555. and he will be their judge

  556. on that day

  557. when he returns.

  558. But if you're troubled

  559. by this,

  560. remember the particular judge

  561. we're talking about here

  562. is the one

  563. who loved the world

  564. so that he laid

  565. his life down.

  566. Church,

  567. if you're concerned

  568. or worried

  569. about your friends

  570. or family

  571. or anyone else

  572. in this wide world

  573. who has not heard

  574. the gospel,

  575. be comforted.

  576. The one who has been

  577. appointed as judge

  578. is the very one

  579. who in his compassion

  580. did more to save

  581. the world

  582. than we can imagine.

  583. As scripture says,

  584. it is a fearful thing

  585. to fall into the hands

  586. of the living God.

  587. But scripture also says

  588. that that very God

  589. is the one

  590. who sacrificed himself

  591. for those

  592. in his hands.

  593. What better judge

  594. of the world

  595. is there to have

  596. than that?

  597. If we can trust him,

  598. we can trust that he's able

  599. to save all

  600. whom he calls.

  601. And for this reason,

  602. that final judgment

  603. as adjudicated

  604. by Jesus

  605. will not only be

  606. the most just

  607. but also the most

  608. compassionate judgment.

  609. Take comfort

  610. in that.

  611. And now in Jesus' prayer,

  612. he has also made it clear

  613. that eternal life

  614. is given to all

  615. whom the Father

  616. has given him.

  617. But some people

  618. are uncomfortable

  619. with the idea

  620. that ultimately

  621. our salvation

  622. depends on God's will

  623. and not our own.

  624. Sometimes this is

  625. sort of a

  626. raw fleshly rebellion

  627. but other times

  628. it's a philosophical one

  629. with carefully reasoned objections.

  630. But friends,

  631. if you're troubled by this

  632. then I want to assure you

  633. what this means

  634. is that at bottom

  635. your salvation

  636. doesn't depend on you,

  637. it depends on the work of God.

  638. So when you sin

  639. or mess up

  640. and we all do,

  641. it doesn't mean

  642. that you've blown it.

  643. It doesn't mean

  644. that when you're struggling,

  645. when you're wrestling

  646. with your sinful self,

  647. when you've stumbled

  648. in the race

  649. or you've strayed

  650. from the way,

  651. it doesn't mean

  652. that you've fallen

  653. from grace

  654. because it is Jesus

  655. who saves.

  656. He's the author

  657. and perfecter

  658. of our faith.

  659. And as the Apostle Jude writes,

  660. God is able

  661. to keep you

  662. from stumbling

  663. and to present you

  664. blameless

  665. before the presence

  666. of his glory

  667. with great joy.

  668. My friends,

  669. how wonderful it is

  670. to have our eternal life

  671. procured and protected

  672. by God himself.

  673. He is the one

  674. who will bring you

  675. to repentance.

  676. He is the one

  677. who will make you

  678. to stand on that day

  679. when he judges

  680. all flesh.

  681. And he's the one

  682. who will pick you up

  683. when you have fallen

  684. and will give you

  685. fruits of repentance.

  686. As I said earlier,

  687. Scripture declares

  688. that it is a terrible thing

  689. to fall into the hands

  690. of the living God.

  691. But Jesus also says,

  692. I give them eternal life

  693. and they will never perish

  694. and no one will snatch them

  695. out of my hand.

  696. How terrible it is

  697. to be in the hands of God

  698. but how wonderful it is also.

  699. The Apostle Paul explains

  700. this mystery

  701. of our salvation

  702. depending on God

  703. yet also intertwining

  704. with our will.

  705. He exhorts the Philippians,

  706. he says,

  707. work out your salvation

  708. with fear and trembling

  709. for it is God

  710. who works in you

  711. both to will

  712. and to work

  713. for his good pleasure.

  714. Now lastly,

  715. Jesus in his prayer

  716. says that eternal life

  717. is to know God

  718. and his son

  719. and some people

  720. interpret this

  721. by claiming that Christians

  722. have some kind

  723. of special knowledge

  724. that is only available

  725. to a few.

  726. And if you encounter

  727. a Christian

  728. who thinks this

  729. is the kind of knowledge

  730. Jesus is talking about,

  731. they sometimes can come off

  732. as a sort of holier-than-thou,

  733. know-it-all kind of person.

  734. But this isn't the knowledge

  735. that Jesus is talking about here.

  736. The kind of knowledge

  737. that Jesus has in mind

  738. is not informational knowledge,

  739. it's relational knowledge.

  740. The knowledge that he's speaking about

  741. is that kind of knowing

  742. that you experience

  743. when you know

  744. a person intimately

  745. heart-to-heart

  746. and face-to-face.

  747. And in this case,

  748. the person that you know

  749. is God himself.

  750. And when you know him,

  751. then you understand

  752. just how little

  753. and insignificant you are.

  754. And you see the gravity

  755. of your sins

  756. and you understand

  757. God's righteous anger,

  758. but also his love

  759. and his mercy.

  760. And then you're humbled.

  761. And then you begin to realize

  762. that what really matters

  763. is not what you think about God,

  764. but what God thinks about you.

  765. And you understand

  766. that God does not like

  767. the sins you have been committing.

  768. And then,

  769. as he leads you to repentance

  770. and you feel his forgiveness,

  771. you realize that nothing compares

  772. to knowing God

  773. and his Son, Jesus Christ,

  774. and being known by him.

  775. But friends,

  776. after all this,

  777. if you are perhaps

  778. still hesitant

  779. to share the good news

  780. of Jesus with others,

  781. out of fear

  782. that you may come across

  783. as arrogant

  784. or mean-spirited,

  785. if that's a challenge

  786. you're facing,

  787. then here's what you should do.

  788. Remember the glory

  789. for which Jesus prayed

  790. and seek after it.

  791. Father, he prayed,

  792. the hour has come.

  793. Glorify your Son.

  794. And then he went to the cross

  795. for the sins of the world

  796. and then the world was changed.

  797. So you also,

  798. when you seek after

  799. the glory of Jesus,

  800. when you lay down

  801. your life for others,

  802. then your neighbors

  803. will listen to you.

  804. When your friends

  805. and your neighbors

  806. see the love of God

  807. poured out in your heart,

  808. when they see your patience

  809. and your humility,

  810. when they see

  811. your long-suffering,

  812. your joy and hardship,

  813. your willingness

  814. to forgive,

  815. your quickness

  816. to repent,

  817. and your desire

  818. to bear the burdens

  819. of others,

  820. then they'll also

  821. see Jesus in you

  822. and then they will

  823. listen to you.

  824. Friends,

  825. hear an exhortation

  826. from the book of Hebrews.

  827. Therefore,

  828. since we are surrounded

  829. by so great

  830. a cloud of witnesses,

  831. let us lay aside

  832. every weight

  833. and sin

  834. which clings

  835. so closely

  836. and let us run

  837. with endurance

  838. the race

  839. that is set before us,

  840. looking to Jesus,

  841. the founder

  842. and perfecter

  843. of our faith,

  844. who for the joy

  845. that was set before him

  846. endured the cross,

  847. despising the shame

  848. and is seated

  849. at the right hand

  850. of the throne of God.

  851. Let's pray.

  852. Father,

  853. we ask in the name

  854. of your son Jesus

  855. that you would make us

  856. to know his glory,

  857. that you would prepare us

  858. for that eternal

  859. weight of glory.

  860. Father,

  861. I pray for those

  862. right now

  863. who are suffering,

  864. who are in despair,

  865. who are perplexed.

  866. I pray, Lord,

  867. that you would give them

  868. immense comfort now.

  869. I pray, Father,

  870. that as the sufferings

  871. of Christ

  872. overflow in their lives,

  873. that the joy of Christ

  874. would also overflow in them.

  875. Father,

  876. I pray that as a church

  877. we would be united together

  878. in the fellowship

  879. of the sufferings of Jesus.

  880. Father,

  881. I pray that you would teach us

  882. how to weep

  883. with those who weep,

  884. how to mourn

  885. with those who mourn,

  886. and how to rejoice

  887. with those who rejoice.

  888. Father,

  889. I pray that you would

  890. perfect us

  891. whenever we suffer,

  892. that you would help us

  893. to run the race

  894. with perseverance

  895. for the joy

  896. that is set before us.

  897. And we pray this

  898. in the mighty name

  899. of Jesus.

  900. Amen.
