  1. Well, good morning.

  2. This morning we're going to start a new series in the book of Philippians.

  3. And I'm going to begin by talking a little bit about the city of Philippi.

  4. It was founded in the 4th century BC and in the 1st century BC it became a Roman colony.

  5. In the middle of Macedonia, the Greek-speaking part of the world,

  6. it became an outpost for the Roman Empire in important ways.

  7. It was named after Philip, the father of Alexander the Great.

  8. But when the Romans took over, they made it a Roman city in some very unique ways.

  9. Legally, they were free from certain forms of taxation.

  10. The benefit of being a Roman colony was they were under Roman law rather than being under local law.

  11. If you think through some of the tricky things that Jesus and the Pharisees and Sadducees had to navigate in Palestine,

  12. none of that was true because it was direct Roman law.

  13. And it was settled by many soldiers who were given land grants to own property

  14. after the fall of Julius Caesar and the shakeout in the Roman Empire.

  15. It was a very Roman city.

  16. And of all the Greek temples and all the other forms of worship,

  17. the worship of the emperor of Rome was the greatest thing.

  18. The temples that were there was the most prominent form of religion in Philippi in the 1st century.

  19. And it's to this city that Paul came during his second missionary journey.

  20. You can read about it in Acts 16.

  21. He came and though there was no synagogue, so no major Jewish presence,

  22. he found a group of people who were God-fearers, probably Gentiles,

  23. who were within the Jewish circle who were worshiping and gathering for prayer.

  24. And he came and he shared the good news of Jesus.

  25. We hear the conversion of Lydia as a part of that,

  26. a prominent woman in the city who hosted then the early church.

  27. But as Paul came, as happened in lots of places,

  28. he not only came and saw some response, but he also saw opposition.

  29. After healing a woman possessed by a demon, there was conflict.

  30. And hear how strong the Roman theme is in this.

  31. They brought accusation against Paul in Acts 16.20.

  32. He said, these men are Jews.

  33. They're disturbing our city.

  34. They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.

  35. And the rest of the story, Paul was thrown into jail with his companions.

  36. Then there was a grand earthquake.

  37. Paul and Silas were singing hymns.

  38. The jailers converted the famous interaction.

  39. The jailer says, sirs, what must I do to be saved?

  40. And they said, believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.

  41. And this is the foundation of the church in Philippi

  42. that probably happened about 12 or 13 years before this letter was written.

  43. This letter was written at the end of Paul's life.

  44. He was probably imprisoned in Rome.

  45. That seems to be the most likely thing about 62 A.D.

  46. And he was writing to this church that he had seen founded so many years ago,

  47. writing to them as they faced the Roman culture that they lived in.

  48. It was a place of great privilege.

  49. It was also a place of great pressure.

  50. Because conforming to this value that Rome is everything was very high.

  51. Roman citizenship was a point of pride.

  52. Roman connection was a point of identity.

  53. including even their participation in the cult of the emperor.

  54. And if they went along with this tide, if they followed along with this,

  55. being citizens of Rome and all that, they would have great privilege.

  56. But the Christians there and the churches found that following Christ would provoke persecution instead.

  57. It would be costly for them.

  58. And they were facing pressures from without.

  59. They were facing fractures from within because of these tensions.

  60. And so Paul writes the book of Philippians to this church in this Roman colony with this theme verse.

  61. Verse 127.

  62. Live a life worthy of Christ.

  63. Standing firm in one spirit with one mind.

  64. Striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.

  65. Paul wrote this as a pastor to a church that he loves saying,

  66. Stand firm though the tide of the culture is flowing against you.

  67. Stand firm.

  68. Be citizens of the new kingdom that you are a part of because of Christ.

  69. Count as more worthy than the most great privilege of being a citizen of a Rome.

  70. Count being a citizen of heaven your greatest privilege.

  71. And friends, this is partly why we think this is a really useful book for us to be studying today.

  72. Because I don't know about you, but I feel and see that our church faces similar pressures today.

  73. We live in a world where there are strong pressures to be conformed to the world around us.

  74. Our media culture, our political culture, the prevailing moral code and ethics of this world that we live in.

  75. They run contrary to a life faithful to Christ.

  76. And we see this on both the right and the left.

  77. There are other visions of a better society.

  78. Other offers of an easier salvation.

  79. Other programs on how to live a better life.

  80. And all of them are fueled by worldviews that do not know Christ.

  81. That do not heed God's word.

  82. And do not seek to honor and glorify God.

  83. And this pressure is on from both sides.

  84. And here in New Haven, we feel both of those things acutely.

  85. Friends, Paul is saying, reminding us, that the church should be neither left nor right.

  86. But to be the citizens of heaven is to be something altogether different.

  87. And there will certainly be places where we will find agreement with one side or the other

  88. as they reflect kingdom values.

  89. But we are never beholden to them.

  90. And we never become citizens of following these systems, these groups, these worldviews

  91. that our world is promoting.

  92. We are called to love a world that we will constantly find we will need to nuance our response to.

  93. We will need to find ways to love without agreement.

  94. We will need to find ways to serve without buying in.

  95. And Paul is writing this letter to a church to say, stand firm in the gospel.

  96. Hold on to the word of life in the midst of the pressures that you are facing.

  97. Be gospel citizens is what he's saying in this overall book.

  98. And so we're going to start by looking at the first section, verses 1 through 11.

  99. That's at page 980 in the Pew Bible.

  100. If you want to look there with us, we're going to be looking at Philippians 1, 1 through 11.

  101. We're going to be answering the question, what does a community of gospel citizens look like?

  102. So if you want to turn with me, we're going to read this passage together and then pray.

  103. Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  104. Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi,

  105. with the overseers and deacons, grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  106. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all,

  107. making my prayer with joy.

  108. Because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

  109. and I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion

  110. at the day of Jesus Christ.

  111. It is right for me to feel this way about you all because I hold you in my heart,

  112. for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense

  113. and confirmation of the gospel.

  114. For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.

  115. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more with knowledge and all discernment,

  116. so that you may prove what is excellent and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

  117. filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.

  118. Let's ask for God's help as we listen to his word this morning.

  119. Lord, we pray that you would help us, Lord, to sit under your word,

  120. that our hearts, Lord, would be ready to hear and to heed what you have to say to us,

  121. that your Holy Spirit would be working in our hearts to convict us of ways

  122. that we have not followed your word.

  123. Lord, I pray for minds to be alert, to listen and understand,

  124. and Lord, for hands and wills to be ready to obey.

  125. Lord, I pray for your help this morning, that you would help me to speak clearly,

  126. that you would help me to speak your word, truthfully and faithfully,

  127. for all of our good.

  128. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  129. Amen.

  130. Amen.

  131. So in this section, and I'm going to focus on verses 3 through 11 as we look at it this morning,

  132. in this section we see three things about the characteristics of a gospel community.

  133. A gospel community is thankful for gospel partnership,

  134. expressive of gospel love, and prayerful for gospel fruit.

  135. So if you're taking notes, there's your outline.

  136. First thing then, Paul says, is that a gospel community is thankful for gospel partnership.

  137. This is what I see in verses 3 through 8.

  138. This idea of the gospel is central, not only here but throughout the book.

  139. What does he mean in the gospel?

  140. He uses it seven different times in this short book,

  141. and he never ever defines it.

  142. Because by this time at the end of his life, in the Christian church,

  143. gospel was shorthand that everybody knew what it meant.

  144. It talks about the good news of what God has done in Jesus Christ

  145. to accomplish for us our salvation,

  146. so that by faith in him we might be brought out of darkness into light,

  147. out of death into life,

  148. out of alienation and into a life-giving relationship with God.

  149. That's what the gospel is.

  150. And what Paul starts with is,

  151. I am so thankful for gospel partnership with you.

  152. What did this look like?

  153. Well, it looked like a couple of things.

  154. First of all, he remembers the story back that we talked about briefly,

  155. and you can read about in Acts 16,

  156. how they participated in the founding of the church,

  157. how Lydia hosted the home,

  158. how the jailer, after he was converted,

  159. took Paul and his companions into his home,

  160. and how we'll see in chapter 4,

  161. this church was regularly contributing to the ongoing ministry that Paul had.

  162. Even as he moved on from Philippi to other churches,

  163. to Thessalonica and to Corinth and to Rome,

  164. the church at Philippi was continuing to financially support Paul's ministry.

  165. So there was a partnership in that sense.

  166. Secondly, there was a partnership because they shared this commitment to live a life worthy of the gospel.

  167. That phrase that we read in verses 127.

  168. Their partnership was not just in a mission,

  169. but in a shared belief system,

  170. in a shared world that they lived in.

  171. Because of the gospel, we share together.

  172. We are partners in our faithfulness to believing and continuing to believe

  173. and live out in obedience our life according to the gospel.

  174. But thirdly, and also clearly from this,

  175. we see that they were participating in the proclamation of the gospel.

  176. Paul came and he was all about the gospel.

  177. And they not only supported him by doing this,

  178. but they would actively share.

  179. Look at verse 7.

  180. This is partly where I see this.

  181. Paul writes,

  182. Not only was Paul doing this,

  183. explaining and defending the gospel,

  184. but so were the Philippians.

  185. They were standing with him and doing the same thing

  186. in whatever context they lived in.

  187. They too were sharing this good news,

  188. defending and confirming.

  189. This is the best thing that you have ever heard.

  190. Come and see who Jesus is.

  191. Come behold what God has done.

  192. And come believe.

  193. This was a mission of Paul.

  194. This was a mission of the early church.

  195. And Paul was so thankful for this Philippian church

  196. that was a partner with them.

  197. And it was not an easy partnership.

  198. As we read in that verse,

  199. not only did they participate with him in the ministry,

  200. but they participated with him in the suffering.

  201. Paul writes to them later in chapter 1,

  202. For it has been granted to you

  203. that for the sake of Christ,

  204. you should not only believe in him,

  205. but also suffer for his sake,

  206. engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had,

  207. and now hear that I still have.

  208. Paul knows that this partnership

  209. was going to be costly for them.

  210. It would mean them identifying with Christ

  211. against the culture that they lived in

  212. and potentially facing the opposition and persecution

  213. that Paul faced as well.

  214. So the first thing that Paul says about a gospel citizenship

  215. is that there is a gospel partnership.

  216. We are in this together.

  217. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ,

  218. God has called you to be a part of the church.

  219. And the church is here on earth

  220. in this in-between time,

  221. between the ascension of Christ and his return

  222. to bring final judgment and the end of all things

  223. and the remaking of all things

  224. in a glorious new world.

  225. We have a mission that God has given us all

  226. to share in together,

  227. to make Jesus known.

  228. And that happens through our faithfulness,

  229. and it happens through our ministry to one another.

  230. For those of you who are new,

  231. and to remind those of you who have been here

  232. for a long time,

  233. this is why we're moving to two services.

  234. The church right now is not full.

  235. You might be thinking,

  236. why did we go to two services?

  237. It's not that full.

  238. We're going to two services

  239. because over the last five years,

  240. we've seen God slowly bring more and more people.

  241. We're not wanting to be big just to be big,

  242. but we do want more and more people

  243. to hear the gospel.

  244. And so we're going through this growth pain right now.

  245. If you're new,

  246. we're going through a growth pain

  247. of moving from one to two services

  248. so that more people can come

  249. and be a part of our church community

  250. and hear the preaching of the gospel.

  251. It's also why we do children's ministry,

  252. by the way,

  253. because we believe that children need to hear the gospel

  254. contextualized for their developmental stage.

  255. And so that's why we do it.

  256. It's also why we have missions partnerships

  257. with places like Bridges of Hope

  258. and the 180 Center

  259. and other ministries in the city,

  260. because we believe that the gospel should go out

  261. to all people,

  262. to this whole community,

  263. to the big old university behind us,

  264. to the homeless people who live on the green,

  265. to the various communities in Fairhaven

  266. and Newhallville and the Hill

  267. and Prospect Street

  268. and Cozy Beach

  269. and so on and so forth.

  270. Because God has called us

  271. to bear witness to Jesus Christ

  272. in this city

  273. and around the world,

  274. which is why we partner with our missionaries

  275. who serve in Southeast Asia

  276. and in Europe

  277. and in other places

  278. so that we can be a part of what God is doing.

  279. This is the mission

  280. and the gospel partnership

  281. that God calls us into.

  282. And the question for you this morning

  283. is that if you're here

  284. and you're wondering,

  285. as a believer in Christ,

  286. why am I here?

  287. Well, because God has called you here as a mission.

  288. If you're here starting your time here at university,

  289. you're here, yes, to get an education,

  290. yes, to get a degree,

  291. but even more than that,

  292. you are here to be a part of God's mission

  293. in this city while you are here.

  294. who has God put around you

  295. to be a part of this gospel mission

  296. by bearing witness to?

  297. Who has God put around you in this room

  298. that you can partner with to do that?

  299. So there's an active gospel mission for sure,

  300. but we're not meant to be lone rangers in it

  301. as we've seen.

  302. This gospel partnership is a shared task

  303. and in that relationship,

  304. we see the second characteristic.

  305. In three through eight,

  306. we also see that Paul says,

  307. gospel citizens show an expression

  308. of gospel love for one another.

  309. Verse seven, again,

  310. it is right for me to feel this way about you all

  311. because I hold you in my heart.

  312. Now, when we read something,

  313. how you feel this way,

  314. we usually think,

  315. oh, feelings, this is sentimentality,

  316. this is the moment when I have this rush of emotion.

  317. But for Paul,

  318. he actually means something a little bit different.

  319. By how I feel about you,

  320. he means this is my disposition towards you.

  321. This is how I view you.

  322. This is not a natural affection of,

  323. I like you because you're funny

  324. or because we share interests

  325. or those sorts of things,

  326. but I have an affection for you.

  327. I care about you

  328. and I view you in a certain way

  329. because of the gospel.

  330. Verse eight says,

  331. I yearn for you

  332. with the affection of Jesus Christ.

  333. That is, I see you the way Christ sees you

  334. as a fellow citizen of God's family.

  335. I see you as someone who, like Christ,

  336. longs for your spiritual well-being.

  337. This word yearning has,

  338. it actually,

  339. its roots is from our gut,

  340. not from our heart.

  341. It's from our gut.

  342. I have this gut longing

  343. for you

  344. to be steadfast in the gospel.

  345. He calls them at the beginning of the letter,

  346. you are saints.

  347. And to be in relationship with them

  348. brings him great joy.

  349. He has them in his heart.

  350. And as he writes this,

  351. he says,

  352. and I am so jazzed

  353. about what God is doing in you.

  354. This is what verse six is about.

  355. This is a wonderful verse.

  356. Look with me at it.

  357. I'm sure of this,

  358. that he who began a good work in you

  359. will bring it to completion

  360. at the day of Christ Jesus.

  361. Paul writes with this affection saying,

  362. I have seen God at work in you.

  363. I know God is there.

  364. I know that he has started something.

  365. Not only has he started it,

  366. but I am so confident

  367. because I've seen God at work in you,

  368. he is going to finish it.

  369. He is going to take this home.

  370. God has got you.

  371. God has got this.

  372. This is based on his understanding

  373. of the sufficiency of Christ's work,

  374. that Christ has done

  375. all that we need for our salvation.

  376. It's not up to our ongoing obedience

  377. to achieve this end,

  378. but we're called to obedience

  379. out of the security

  380. that we have in Christ.

  381. And Paul says,

  382. I yearn for you

  383. as one who will be

  384. my forever gospel family.

  385. And I love you

  386. because of Christ

  387. and because of what God

  388. is doing in you.

  389. Paul saw them

  390. as fellow gospel citizens

  391. and to model how we ought

  392. to see one another

  393. in the church.

  394. It's easy today

  395. in our culture

  396. to call love

  397. something

  398. very sentimental

  399. and very easy.

  400. It's how we mesh.

  401. It's how we get along.

  402. We have shared interests.

  403. We come from the same backgrounds.

  404. We feel strong passions

  405. or emotions.

  406. And this is what love is

  407. in our culture.

  408. But Paul says

  409. there's actually

  410. a greater culture

  411. or greater love

  412. than that.

  413. A love that is based

  414. on commitment.

  415. A love that is based

  416. on viewing people

  417. the way God sees them.

  418. A love that sees

  419. I see you

  420. and I value you

  421. and I treasure you

  422. not because

  423. of some

  424. passing human affection

  425. but because of

  426. what God

  427. has made you to be

  428. and what God

  429. has saved you to be

  430. and the value

  431. that God puts on you

  432. as both a created person

  433. and a redeemed member

  434. of the gospel community.

  435. And friends

  436. this is part of

  437. what I love

  438. about our Trinity community

  439. is that I see this.

  440. We don't gather together

  441. because we share

  442. common interests.

  443. We don't share age

  444. and stage of life.

  445. We don't share race

  446. or socioeconomic

  447. or educational status.

  448. We certainly don't share

  449. political affiliations

  450. or allegiances

  451. across the board

  452. but we do share

  453. in the gospel.

  454. And we come together

  455. and worship

  456. with one another

  457. and love one another

  458. well because of it.

  459. One of the examples

  460. throughout the pandemic

  461. this has become

  462. even more true.

  463. It happened before so

  464. but I've seen

  465. there's a bunch of people

  466. in our church

  467. who go out to lunch

  468. after service.

  469. I think this will probably

  470. happen after the second service now

  471. so I don't know

  472. how you all are going

  473. to navigate that.

  474. Maybe you want to come back

  475. at 1230

  476. to join the lunch bunch.

  477. But it's this wonderfully

  478. diverse group of people

  479. who just say

  480. hey we're here

  481. with one another

  482. brothers and sisters

  483. let's go have fellowship

  484. together and eat.

  485. And they eat good food

  486. and it's a cross section

  487. of our church.

  488. It's a wonderful group

  489. of people

  490. that just spontaneously said

  491. let's spend time together.

  492. And just one example

  493. of many that I could give

  494. of the places

  495. where I see this happening

  496. already at Trinity.

  497. And Paul says to us

  498. as he said

  499. to the Philippians

  500. do still more.

  501. Finally

  502. if gospel partnership

  503. is something

  504. Paul is thankful for

  505. if gospel love

  506. is something

  507. that he's encouraged by

  508. engaged in

  509. the last thing

  510. is that he is prayerful

  511. for gospel fruit.

  512. What does he mean by this?

  513. Look with me

  514. at verses 9 through 11.

  515. My prayer is that

  516. your love may abound

  517. more and more

  518. with knowledge

  519. and all discernment

  520. so that you may approve

  521. what is excellent

  522. and so be pure

  523. and blameless

  524. for the day of Christ

  525. filled with the fruit

  526. of righteousness

  527. that comes through

  528. Jesus Christ

  529. to the glory

  530. and praise of God.

  531. Paul prays

  532. his engagement

  533. with the gospel communities

  534. that he prays for them

  535. but what he prays for them

  536. is not for Aunt Millie's

  537. you know

  538. hammer toe

  539. to get healed

  540. although it's okay

  541. to pray for those things.

  542. It's not praying

  543. that they get good jobs

  544. although it's okay

  545. to pray for those things.

  546. What he prays for

  547. is their spiritual growth

  548. in the gospel

  549. and particularly

  550. in the context

  551. that they're in

  552. that they would grow

  553. in love

  554. and that this love

  555. for God

  556. for their world

  557. and for one another

  558. would be increasingly

  559. characterized

  560. by knowledge

  561. and discernment

  562. that leads

  563. to pure living.

  564. Paul prays

  565. that they would not

  566. just be loving

  567. in the sort of

  568. tolerant sense of

  569. hey it's okay

  570. you can do whatever

  571. you want

  572. that our world

  573. tends to embrace

  574. but to love

  575. with a knowledge

  576. of what is right

  577. and wrong

  578. what is good

  579. and what is evil

  580. what is life giving

  581. and what is destructive

  582. in this world

  583. according to God

  584. and his word

  585. and Paul prays

  586. that this church

  587. would know that

  588. more and more

  589. because they know

  590. the pull

  591. he knows the pull

  592. of the Roman culture

  593. saying there are other

  594. things you should value

  595. more than the gospel

  596. there are other things

  597. that you should value

  598. more than God's word

  599. there are other things

  600. that should be

  601. higher priority

  602. than this mission

  603. that God has called you on

  604. Paul says

  605. I pray that you would love

  606. with knowledge

  607. and discernment

  608. so that you would understand

  609. from God's perspective

  610. this world

  611. and how to navigate it

  612. with grace

  613. and truth

  614. and that as you understand

  615. these things

  616. more and more

  617. that you would live

  618. a life that is pure

  619. and blameless

  620. this doesn't mean

  621. perfection

  622. but it means

  623. people who live

  624. knowing what is right

  625. and wrong

  626. knowing who God

  627. is in the world

  628. and living

  629. not as a Roman citizen

  630. but as a citizen

  631. of heaven

  632. and Paul prays

  633. that these things

  634. would abound

  635. more and more

  636. and as he prays

  637. for them

  638. he points to the foundation

  639. the fruit of the righteousness

  640. that comes from Christ Jesus

  641. this is the key

  642. to the gospel

  643. we're going to preach on it again

  644. when we get to chapter 3

  645. but let me just rephrase it

  646. Paul says

  647. all of this flows

  648. right

  649. your growth

  650. as a Christian community

  651. this prayer

  652. being fulfilled

  653. in us

  654. to live

  655. counter-culturally

  656. his prayer for them

  657. is rooted

  658. and grounded

  659. in this gospel

  660. not that we

  661. are going to be righteous

  662. by knowing more

  663. and getting things

  664. more and more right

  665. but that we are righteous

  666. because we have a righteousness

  667. that comes from Christ

  668. this is what Paul will see

  669. in chapter 3

  670. verse 9

  671. not my own righteousness

  672. because my own righteousness

  673. will never get me there

  674. I am not smart enough

  675. I am not faithful enough

  676. I am not strong enough

  677. to get there

  678. on my own

  679. but Christ

  680. has given me

  681. a righteousness

  682. outside of myself

  683. that is all I need

  684. to be brought

  685. into this

  686. citizenship

  687. of heaven

  688. into this family

  689. with God

  690. and this righteousness

  691. is Christ's righteousness

  692. given to us

  693. it covers us

  694. and makes us right

  695. with God

  696. we trust that Jesus' death

  697. is sufficient

  698. for our forgiveness

  699. we believe that Jesus

  700. rose from the dead

  701. to give us life

  702. and we lean on this

  703. gift of righteousness

  704. so that we can be gods

  705. so that what he has

  706. given to us

  707. then becomes

  708. the fountain

  709. of this life

  710. that we now live

  711. for him

  712. the gospel

  713. that is bearing fruit

  714. in the Philippians

  715. and in us

  716. the gospel

  717. that is the focus

  718. of their gospel partnership

  719. it is the fountain

  720. of their gospel love

  721. and it is the focus

  722. of his prayers

  723. that we would know

  724. this gospel

  725. more and more

  726. that we might know

  727. Christ

  728. more and more

  729. the initiator

  730. the sustainer

  731. and the finisher

  732. of our faith

  733. and so Paul prays

  734. do still more

  735. do still more

  736. if you want to grow

  737. in your prayers

  738. for one another

  739. D.A. Carson

  740. Nick mentioned him earlier

  741. he's got another

  742. great book

  743. called

  744. Praying with Paul

  745. the priority of Paul

  746. in his prayers

  747. goes through all

  748. the letters of Paul

  749. and just says

  750. what did Paul pray for

  751. maybe these are things

  752. we should pray for

  753. for one another

  754. and for ourselves

  755. as well

  756. there's a copy of it

  757. in the book

  758. stall downstairs

  759. and if you need more

  760. let me know

  761. we'll get some

  762. but friends

  763. as we think about this

  764. as Paul prays

  765. for gospel fruit

  766. in the Philippians

  767. we think about this

  768. for ourselves

  769. how do we pray?

  770. do we pray

  771. for gospel fruit

  772. in our lives?

  773. do we pray

  774. for our love

  775. to abound

  776. in discernment?

  777. do we pray

  778. for one another

  779. to be steadfast

  780. in the stream

  781. of a culture

  782. that flows

  783. the other way

  784. against us?

  785. do we pray

  786. that we would be

  787. ultimately caught

  788. up with

  789. the vision

  790. that Paul

  791. ends his prayer with

  792. that we would live

  793. to the praise

  794. and glory of God

  795. so that God

  796. would be seen

  797. to be great

  798. so that God

  799. would be seen

  800. to be an awesome God

  801. worthy

  802. worthy of our

  803. proclamation of him

  804. worthy of our suffering

  805. worthy of our attention

  806. worthy of our fellowship

  807. with one another

  808. let's go ahead and pray

  809. and ask the Lord

  810. to do that for us

  811. Lord we thank you

  812. this morning

  813. for this word

  814. and we pray

  815. that you would help us

  816. to be gospel citizens

  817. Lord to live

  818. not according

  819. to the world

  820. but to live

  821. according to the good news

  822. of what you've done

  823. in Jesus

  824. I pray Lord

  825. that you would encourage

  826. us this morning

  827. to pursue you

  828. I pray as well

  829. that you would help us

  830. Lord

  831. to pursue one another

  832. to encourage one another

  833. as we have opportunity

  834. to stand fast

  835. and to press on

  836. in this journey

  837. and this mission

  838. that you've called us

  839. and we pray these things

  840. in Jesus name

  841. Amen
