  1. Hello, everyone.

  2. So I think we're going to, we're just going to go ahead and get started.

  3. Hopefully some people will be trickling in.

  4. We are in the midst of a series on women in Christianity,

  5. women we should know and love and honor.

  6. And John Hinkson has been doing a great job.

  7. He's been talking about women in Reformation era, Puritan era, you know, 15, 16, 1700s.

  8. And in this class, we're going to go back farther in time to the early church.

  9. And we're going to begin with the New Testament

  10. and talk about some of the women in the New Testament.

  11. These names, I think, will be pretty familiar to most of us,

  12. but I'm hoping that perhaps we'll uncover some new things.

  13. But even if we don't, I'm hoping that their lives will be encouraging to us.

  14. And then we're going to move from the New Testament to women in the early church.

  15. The first few centuries, a little bit afterwards of when Christianity began.

  16. And these names may be a bit more unfamiliar.

  17. Before I begin, I just want to give you guys kind of a warning about the state of evidence.

  18. Because when we deal with the ancient world, as with everything in the ancient world,

  19. we've lost an enormous amount of material.

  20. And so most of these folks we're going to be talking about,

  21. we just have little snippets of information, sometimes just a paragraph.

  22. But that actually is worth quite a lot in the context of the ancient world.

  23. For some women, we have much more.

  24. But this is the case for most men in the ancient world also.

  25. We know almost nothing or very little about them.

  26. So because of this, in the past classes in this series,

  27. John's focused on just one woman or maybe two.

  28. But we're going to be looking at a bunch.

  29. We're going to do just a series of vignettes of little portraits.

  30. Some are going to be very quick.

  31. Some are going to be a little longer.

  32. And hopefully that will give us kind of understanding of the breadth

  33. and of accomplishments of these women and how they were used by God

  34. to glorify him and to build up his church.

  35. Why don't I begin with prayer?

  36. Father in heaven, we thank you for the opportunity to worship you together,

  37. to gather here safely in your name.

  38. Father, we're going to be reading about women who'd never had that opportunity.

  39. And we pray we'd be encouraged by their faith and how much they loved you

  40. and how much they sacrificed, how faithful they were in honoring you.

  41. I pray, Lord, that their testimonies would echo in our hearts

  42. and would build us up, would encourage us, would rebuke us where we need rebuking,

  43. would give us peace where we need peace.

  44. Father, we pray all this in the name of your son, Jesus.

  45. Amen.

  46. Okay, so like I said, we're going to be starting in the New Testament

  47. before we move on to early Christianity.

  48. We're going to start with the name of a woman that many of us know, Elizabeth.

  49. She, as you know, was the mother of John the Baptist.

  50. And I start with her because she's going to begin a little theme

  51. we'll be addressing in the first section of our talk.

  52. And that's because in the Gospel of Luke, Luke's the only writer who mentions Elizabeth.

  53. And he talks about, in Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  54. how after her husband, Zacharias, had the angel appear to him

  55. and was told that she was going to become pregnant,

  56. which would answer their long-sought-after prayer, despite her age,

  57. she became pregnant, she conceived.

  58. And then in Luke chapter 1, verse 41, Luke describes how Mary,

    Luke 1:41

  59. the mother of Jesus, who was pregnant, came to meet Elizabeth,

  60. who was also pregnant with John the Baptist.

  61. And, quote,

  62. When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby, that's John, leaped in her womb.

  63. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

  64. and she exclaimed with a loud cry,

  65. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

  66. And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

  67. For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears,

  68. the baby in my womb leaped for joy,

  69. and blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment

  70. of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

  71. So it's a beautiful passage.

  72. This is almost all of the little we know about Elizabeth.

  73. What I want to highlight here, though,

  74. is how she was filled with the Holy Spirit.

  75. And Luke doesn't use the word,

  76. but she seems to give a prophecy here

  77. about Mary and also about her child, Jesus.

  78. She was filled with the Holy Spirit.

  79. And that's going to be a little theme that Luke is going to emphasize,

  80. because right after this, in Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  81. Mary replies with this beautiful hymn, this beautiful song.

  82. It's often called the Magnificat.

  83. Mary says,

  84. My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

  85. for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

  86. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.

  87. Mary also then, in reply, gives this sort of prophetic word about her

  88. and points out, like Elizabeth did,

  89. that everyone from all generations are going to call Mary blessed

  90. because she was blessed with conceiving and bearing and giving birth

  91. and nursing the Son of God.

  92. This little vignette of Elizabeth and Mary,

  93. it reminds us of some of the women in the Old Testament

  94. who also sang songs,

  95. women like Miriam, Moses' sister,

  96. and Deborah, the judge,

  97. who all had these sort of prophetic ministries amongst the people

  98. and who were called prophetesses,

  99. just like these two women.

  100. Luke goes on to tell us that Mary wrapped Jesus in swaddling clothes,

  101. and Luke also gives us another little hint about something

  102. that we have to delve below the surface to understand.

  103. He says in Luke 2, verse 19,

    Luke 2:19

  104. when he's describing some occurrences that happened around the birth of Jesus,

  105. he says that Mary, quote,

  106. treasured all of these things in her heart.

  107. And then, later on in the chapter, in Luke 51,

  108. he says it again.

  109. And scholars have pondered why Luke says this,

  110. why does he repeat it,

  111. and what does it mean?

  112. And there is a theory,

  113. which I think is the right one.

  114. This is the one I favor,

  115. is that Luke is indicating

  116. where he is getting his information from.

  117. He's kind of revealing his source for this,

  118. that Mary remembered this.

  119. And so he either interviewed Mary,

  120. or he knew someone who knew Mary very well,

  121. who relayed these stories about Jesus' birth.

  122. And Luke is sort of giving this sort of subtly

  123. as a clue to where he's getting his information from.

  124. There's another,

  125. there's a reason why we think this also,

  126. because if we keep reading the Gospel of Luke,

  127. we quickly, in chapter 2,

  128. come across another prophetess,

  129. another female prophet,

  130. named Anna.

  131. And we know very little about Anna.

  132. This is a beautiful,

  133. but highly unrealistic picture of Anna.

  134. The codex had not been invented yet

  135. when Anna was reading.

  136. So everything was in a scroll.

  137. So she,

  138. and presumably at 84 years old,

  139. she would not have been able to afford something like this.

  140. But Luke tells us that when they brought,

  141. Mary and Joseph brought Jesus into the temple,

  142. that there was a prophetess,

  143. and in his words named Anna,

  144. the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher.

  145. She was advanced in years,

  146. having lived with her husband seven years

  147. from when she was a virgin,

  148. and then as a widow until she was 84.

  149. And she did not depart from the temple,

  150. worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.

  151. And coming up at that very hour,

  152. she began to give thanks to God

  153. and to speak of him to all

  154. who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

  155. That's all we know about Anna.

  156. But what's remarkable is

  157. if we start piecing these things together,

  158. we see that in the first three chapters,

  159. first two chapters of Luke,

  160. we have three women

  161. who are filled with the Holy Spirit

  162. and who are speaking words of encouragement

  163. about this coming Savior,

  164. about Jesus.

  165. And we have,

  166. I've already mentioned them,

  167. like Miriam and Deborah,

  168. we have examples in the Old Testament,

  169. but we see this clustering

  170. of Luke emphasizing the role of women

  171. in the early life of Jesus.

  172. And that continues in the Gospel of Luke.

  173. If we go to Luke chapter eight,

  174. there's this fascinating little passage

  175. that we're aching to know more about,

  176. but Luke doesn't really let us know more.

  177. But he's talking about Jesus.

  178. He says,

  179. soon afterwards,

  180. this is chapter eight,

  181. one through three.

  182. He says,

  183. soon afterwards,

  184. Jesus went through cities and villages

  185. proclaiming and bringing the good news

  186. of the kingdom of God

  187. and the 12,

  188. the apostles,

  189. the 12 apostles were with him.

  190. But then Luke gives this wonderful detail.

  191. He says,

  192. and also some women were with Jesus

  193. who had been healed of evil spirits

  194. and infirmities.

  195. Mary called Magdalene

  196. from whom seven demons had gone out

  197. and Joanna,

  198. the wife of Chusa,

  199. Herod's household manager

  200. and Susanna

  201. and many others.

  202. Who provided for them

  203. out of their means.

  204. So,

  205. we have this image of Jesus

  206. when he's doing his itinerant preaching

  207. and going from village to village.

  208. His disciples,

  209. his apostles are with him

  210. and that's all true.

  211. But Luke lets us know

  212. that it was more than just the 12 apostles.

  213. That there were also women with Jesus

  214. who were following him

  215. in his itinerant ministry

  216. going from village to village,

  217. city to city.

  218. And not only that,

  219. that they are providing

  220. for him out of their means.

  221. That they apparently fairly well off.

  222. They're providing for his ministry.

  223. They're supporting it.

  224. And one of them,

  225. at least,

  226. Joanna,

  227. she is called the wife of Chusa

  228. who is King Herod's household manager.

  229. So,

  230. the steward would be kind of

  231. the most senior

  232. of the household staff

  233. or the palace staff.

  234. And she is the wife of this guy.

  235. So,

  236. she would have been fairly well to do

  237. even if Chusa was,

  238. it's possible that he was a slave.

  239. But back in the ancient world,

  240. slaves in this position

  241. could be fairly wealthy

  242. or have a lot of means

  243. behind their jobs.

  244. So,

  245. this is also interesting

  246. because Jesus' disciples,

  247. you know,

  248. they tended to be fishermen

  249. and carpenters.

  250. He was a carpenter.

  251. But here we have

  252. a woman of some wealth,

  253. at least,

  254. following him as well.

  255. In total,

  256. there are 14 women

  257. mentioned by Luke

  258. but are not mentioned

  259. by any other gospel writer.

  260. And

  261. this is one reason

  262. why scholars

  263. think

  264. that

  265. many of the unique

  266. stories that Luke has

  267. are because

  268. he knew some of these women

  269. and they shared with him

  270. these stories

  271. and that they were

  272. the sources

  273. that he mentioned

  274. when he says

  275. in the very beginning

  276. of Luke chapter 1

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  277. that I wanted to go

  278. to the eyewitnesses themselves.

  279. That he's not just

  280. talking about the apostles,

  281. he's also

  282. speaking about

  283. some of these women

  284. like Mary,

  285. the mother of Jesus,

  286. and perhaps

  287. these other women

  288. like Joanna

  289. or Susanna.

  290. There's another

  291. beautiful story

  292. in Luke

  293. which is very famous

  294. about Mary and Martha

  295. and how Jesus

  296. was at their house.

  297. They were hosting him

  298. and how Martha,

  299. Luke says,

  300. was distracted

  301. with much serving

  302. and preparation

  303. and hosting Jesus

  304. and all the other people

  305. who were presumably there

  306. and Mary was

  307. sitting at Jesus' feet

  308. and listening

  309. and learning

  310. and there's that

  311. Martha gets kind of

  312. annoyed at this

  313. and Jesus

  314. says

  315. that,

  316. Martha,

  317. Martha,

  318. you are anxious

  319. and troubled

  320. about many things

  321. but one thing

  322. is necessary.

  323. Mary has chosen

  324. the good portion

  325. which will not

  326. be taken away

  327. from her.

  328. So this is another

  329. little window

  330. in the ministry

  331. and life of Jesus.

  332. What's remarkable

  333. here is that

  334. Jesus wanted

  335. women to learn

  336. from him

  337. just like the other

  338. disciples were

  339. and this was not

  340. a normal thing

  341. in the ancient world

  342. to do

  343. but for Jesus

  344. that's exactly

  345. what he wants

  346. in his female

  347. disciples.

  348. As we go through

  349. many of us

  350. are aware

  351. of the women

  352. in the last hours

  353. of Jesus' life

  354. when he was

  355. carrying

  356. his cross.

  357. Luke describes

  358. how there was

  359. a crowd of people

  360. but he signals out

  361. the women in particular

  362. who were following.

  363. He describes

  364. how Jesus

  365. addresses them.

  366. He says,

  367. daughters of Jerusalem

  368. do not weep for me

  369. but weep for yourselves

  370. and for your children

  371. and he gives

  372. sort of a prophecy

  373. about the terrible

  374. things that are coming

  375. and of course

  376. the women were there

  377. when they saw

  378. Jesus die

  379. on the cross

  380. and when they

  381. laid him

  382. in the tomb

  383. and wrapped him

  384. in clothes

  385. and then Luke

  386. and the other

  387. gospel writers

  388. describe how

  389. they were the first

  390. ones to go

  391. to the tomb

  392. and other gospel

  393. writers indicate

  394. that Jesus

  395. appeared to them

  396. first.

  397. Now this is

  398. another

  399. remarkable aspect

  400. of Jesus' ministry.

  401. It's often said

  402. you may have heard

  403. it before

  404. that in the ancient

  405. world

  406. the testimony

  407. of women

  408. was not valued

  409. or not believed.

  410. We see this

  411. in the gospel

  412. accounts themselves.

  413. Luke says

  414. that when the women

  415. returned

  416. to report

  417. to the apostles

  418. Luke 24 11

  419. that their words

  420. seemed like

  421. an idle tale

  422. and they did not

  423. believe it

  424. and remember

  425. they didn't

  426. believe it

  427. even though

  428. Jesus had said

  429. this was going

  430. to happen

  431. and then they

  432. reported and

  433. they still

  434. are refusing

  435. to believe it

  436. and I actually

  437. wanted to make

  438. sure sometimes

  439. we hear these

  440. assertions that

  441. the ancient world

  442. was a certain

  443. way like they

  444. didn't accept

  445. the testimony

  446. of women

  447. and I've tried

  448. to track this

  449. down and nail

  450. it down

  451. and I discovered

  452. that if you

  453. look in

  454. Greco-Roman law

  455. books if you

  456. look also in

  457. Jewish customs

  458. they do

  459. specifically say

  460. that the

  461. testimony of

  462. women is

  463. outlawed in

  464. court and

  465. you have that

  466. in Greek law

  467. you have it

  468. in Jewish law

  469. and you have

  470. it in Roman

  471. law Latin

  472. law as well

  473. by the by the

  474. third century

  475. that had

  476. changed but

  477. there was still

  478. a stigma we

  479. have jurists

  480. you know lawyers

  481. in Rome saying

  482. yes you know

  483. women are allowed

  484. to do this but

  485. they will even

  486. say there's a

  487. great prejudice

  488. against them

  489. and I point

  490. this out because

  491. it's it makes

  492. it all the more

  493. remarkable

  494. that Jesus

  495. chose to reveal

  496. himself in this

  497. way and the

  498. early church

  499. acknowledged this

  500. there's a writer

  501. named Hippolytus

  502. he has a

  503. commentary on the

  504. Song of Songs

  505. and Tyler

  506. you'll appreciate

  507. this he

  508. interprets the

  509. Song of Songs

  510. as this sort

  511. of love song

  512. between the

  513. soul and

  514. God but

  515. he also

  516. interprets it

  517. allegorically as

  518. representing all

  519. of like the

  520. myrrh and the

  521. ointments that

  522. are mentioned in

  523. the Song of Songs

  524. he keeps giving

  525. these allusions

  526. to the women

  527. who helped

  528. bury Jesus

  529. and he laid

  530. him in the

  531. tomb with

  532. all these

  533. with all

  534. these perfumes

  535. and ointments

  536. and Hippolytus

  537. famously calls

  538. the women

  539. apostles to

  540. the apostles

  541. because he

  542. says that they

  543. were the ones

  544. who preached

  545. the good news

  546. to the apostles

  547. so that the

  548. apostles could

  549. preach it to

  550. the world

  551. if we keep

  552. going with Luke

  553. there's that

  554. scene on the

  555. way to Emmaus

  556. where Jesus

  557. appears to

  558. Cleopas and

  559. another person

  560. and Luke

  561. doesn't tell us

  562. who it is

  563. it's an

  564. anonymous person

  565. and there's a

  566. scholar Richard

  567. Bauckham who

  568. makes an argument

  569. that this is

  570. probably Cleopas'

  571. wife and we

  572. he says it for a

  573. couple reasons

  574. but one reason

  575. is that we know

  576. Cleopas had a

  577. wife because she

  578. was at the tomb

  579. or helped bury

  580. Jesus she was one

  581. of the women who

  582. was around and

  583. so there's good

  584. reason for thinking

  585. that we don't

  586. know that for

  587. sure but it's

  588. I think very

  589. possible perhaps

  590. even probable

  591. if we keep

  592. reading Luke is

  593. not done with

  594. his discussions

  595. of women if

  596. we read the

  597. book of Acts

  598. he mentions that

  599. in chapter 1

  600. when all the

  601. disciples are

  602. together with

  603. one accord

  604. devoting themselves

  605. to prayer he

  606. points out

  607. specifically that

  608. it wasn't just

  609. the male disciples

  610. he says together

  611. with the women

  612. and Mary the

  613. mother of Jesus

  614. he also mentions

  615. at this point

  616. his brothers

  617. they apparently

  618. hadn't always

  619. believed but

  620. already in chapter

  621. 1 in Acts

  622. they're there

  623. they've been

  624. convinced

  625. if we

  626. so to sum

  627. up

  628. we find that

  629. in Luke's

  630. gospel he

  631. tells us that

  632. not only did

  633. women have a

  634. very important

  635. place in Jesus'

  636. ministry

  637. they also had

  638. an important

  639. place as sources

  640. for the gospel

  641. of Luke

  642. I think it's

  643. very fair to

  644. say that

  645. the apostles

  646. seem to have

  647. taken up

  648. Jesus'

  649. examples

  650. of how he

  651. interacted with

  652. women

  653. which was

  654. fairly contrary

  655. to the custom

  656. of the ancient

  657. world

  658. and this is

  659. I'm just going

  660. to give some

  661. scatter shots

  662. here of other

  663. women in the

  664. New Testament

  665. before we get

  666. on to women

  667. in early

  668. Christianity

  669. but there was

  670. Phoebe a deacon

  671. in the church

  672. of Corinth

  673. who Paul

  674. mentions to

  675. the Romans

  676. there's

  677. Judea

  678. and Syntyche

  679. Paul calls

  680. them fellow

  681. workers

  682. there's of

  683. course Priscilla

  684. and Aquila

  685. the husband

  686. wife missionary

  687. team

  688. they were the

  689. ones who

  690. sat Barnabas

  691. down and

  692. explained the

  693. word of God

  694. more accurately

  695. to him

  696. and that

  697. proved to be

  698. enormously

  699. influential in

  700. the church

  701. Barnabas was

  702. one of the

  703. great missionaries

  704. and apostles

  705. of the early

  706. church

  707. and Priscilla

  708. and Aquila

  709. are mentioned

  710. many times

  711. in Paul's

  712. letters and

  713. in the book

  714. of Acts

  715. also

  716. there's

  717. a woman

  718. Junia

  719. who's mentioned

  720. in Romans

  721. and Paul

  722. says that

  723. she is

  724. quote well

  725. known among

  726. the apostles

  727. and this

  728. has proved

  729. controversial

  730. this passage

  731. is controversial

  732. for a few

  733. reasons

  734. one is that

  735. the name

  736. is feminine

  737. it's not

  738. a hundred

  739. percent sure

  740. but it's

  741. likely

  742. all the

  743. evidence

  744. is in

  745. favor of

  746. it

  747. but the

  748. evidence

  749. is not

  750. you know

  751. completely

  752. rock solid

  753. and then

  754. the question

  755. of what

  756. that phrase

  757. means

  758. among the

  759. apostles

  760. people have

  761. debated

  762. if Paul

  763. is here

  764. saying that

  765. this woman

  766. is famous

  767. to the

  768. apostles

  769. that the

  770. apostles

  771. all know

  772. her

  773. and she's

  774. beloved

  775. by them

  776. or if

  777. he's saying

  778. he is

  779. classing her

  780. among the

  781. apostles

  782. as like

  783. an apostle

  784. herself

  785. and this

  786. is controversial

  787. for several

  788. reasons

  789. there are

  790. some early

  791. Christian

  792. writers

  793. John

  794. Chrysostom

  795. Theodorette

  796. they're

  797. writing in

  798. Greek

  799. and they

  800. interpret

  801. this passage

  802. as referring

  803. to a

  804. woman

  805. and calling

  806. her

  807. an apostle

  808. what seems

  809. to be going

  810. on

  811. is that

  812. that term

  813. apostle

  814. is what

  815. we would

  816. probably call

  817. missionary

  818. in the

  819. New Testament

  820. whenever we

  821. translate apostle

  822. we usually

  823. translate it

  824. as like a

  825. special term

  826. for the

  827. twelve

  828. or maybe

  829. Paul the

  830. apostle

  831. but it's

  832. actually

  833. used more

  834. broadly in

  835. the New

  836. Testament

  837. to refer

  838. to

  839. missionaries

  840. and general

  841. missionaries

  842. from churches

  843. so that's

  844. probably what's

  845. going on

  846. here

  847. but again

  848. she was

  849. very prominent

  850. and then

  851. there were

  852. also several

  853. churches

  854. that

  855. met in

  856. the houses

  857. of women

  858. and we know

  859. some of them

  860. like Chloe

  861. in Corinth

  862. Lydia

  863. who's mentioned

  864. in Acts

  865. Nympha

  866. who's mentioned

  867. into the

  868. Colossians

  869. and so

  870. these are

  871. all some

  872. of the

  873. roles

  874. that women

  875. played in

  876. the early

  877. church

  878. we don't

  879. know nearly

  880. as much

  881. as we

  882. would like

  883. to know

  884. about them

  885. but these

  886. are little

  887. kind of

  888. fragments

  889. that remain

  890. that we

  891. can pick

  892. up

  893. okay

  894. before we

  895. I think

  896. as a

  897. fitting

  898. transition

  899. from the

  900. New Testament

  901. to women

  902. in the early

  903. church

  904. I thought

  905. that we

  906. would talk

  907. about

  908. Peter's

  909. mother-in-law

  910. in the

  911. Gospels

  912. we find

  913. that Peter

  914. has a

  915. mother-in-law

  916. because she's

  917. sick

  918. and Jesus

  919. heals her

  920. and that also

  921. tells us

  922. that Peter

  923. had a wife

  924. because he

  925. had a mother-in-law

  926. and she's

  927. never really

  928. mentioned

  929. in the Bible

  930. but she is

  931. mentioned

  932. in early

  933. Christian sources

  934. there's this

  935. one little

  936. paragraph

  937. about her

  938. it's from a

  939. writer named

  940. Clement of

  941. Alexandria

  942. he's writing

  943. around the

  944. year 190

  945. and he

  946. says that

  947. all he

  948. says is

  949. that he

  950. has received

  951. a tradition

  952. that Peter

  953. that Peter's

  954. wife was

  955. executed for

  956. her faith

  957. that she

  958. was martyred

  959. and he

  960. says that

  961. Peter saw

  962. his wife

  963. being led

  964. away

  965. for martyrdom

  966. and that he

  967. called out to

  968. her and

  969. encouraged her

  970. and comforted

  971. her and

  972. addressed her

  973. by name

  974. saying

  975. remember

  976. the Lord

  977. and Clement

  978. says such

  979. was the

  980. marriage

  981. of Peter

  982. and his

  983. wife

  984. that they

  985. would encourage

  986. each other

  987. like that

  988. in their

  989. moment of

  990. most dire

  991. need

  992. Peter of

  993. course after

  994. this also

  995. went on

  996. to be

  997. executed

  998. we don't

  999. know how

  1000. many years

  1001. afterwards

  1002. or how

  1003. soon

  1004. afterwards

  1005. but we

  1006. know that

  1007. he did

  1008. now what

  1009. I want to

  1010. do is

  1011. move ahead

  1012. about a

  1013. hundred years

  1014. from Peter's

  1015. own execution

  1016. and his

  1017. wife

  1018. to

  1019. France

  1020. to Lyon's

  1021. France

  1022. to a

  1023. woman

  1024. called

  1025. Blandina

  1026. and I

  1027. should probably

  1028. warn you

  1029. guys that

  1030. this account

  1031. of Blandina

  1032. and then the

  1033. next account

  1034. that I'll be

  1035. talking about

  1036. is a bit

  1037. gruesome

  1038. and terrible

  1039. I also want

  1040. to encourage

  1041. you though

  1042. that the

  1043. early church

  1044. considered

  1045. these accounts

  1046. to be

  1047. immensely

  1048. encouraging

  1049. for their

  1050. faith

  1051. they did

  1052. not write

  1053. these things

  1054. just to be

  1055. gory

  1056. or to

  1057. shock

  1058. people

  1059. but to

  1060. encourage

  1061. people

  1062. in following

  1063. Jesus

  1064. and it

  1065. seems

  1066. what happened

  1067. in Lyon's

  1068. France

  1069. around 170

  1070. was that

  1071. some rumors

  1072. started going

  1073. around about

  1074. horrible horrible

  1075. things that

  1076. Christians were

  1077. doing

  1078. and these

  1079. were slanders

  1080. they were

  1081. false

  1082. but it

  1083. stirred up

  1084. the populace

  1085. the pagans

  1086. were eager

  1087. to accuse

  1088. the Christians

  1089. of doing

  1090. wrong

  1091. and we

  1092. have a

  1093. lengthy

  1094. letter

  1095. we have

  1096. excerpts

  1097. from what

  1098. was a

  1099. lengthy

  1100. letter

  1101. describing

  1102. what

  1103. happened

  1104. and the

  1105. letter

  1106. begins

  1107. like this

  1108. it says

  1109. when these

  1110. accusations

  1111. were reported

  1112. all the

  1113. people

  1114. raged like

  1115. wild beasts

  1116. against us

  1117. so that

  1118. even if

  1119. some of

  1120. them

  1121. had been

  1122. moderate

  1123. towards us

  1124. because of

  1125. friendship

  1126. they were

  1127. now exceedingly

  1128. furious

  1129. and they

  1130. gnashed

  1131. their teeth

  1132. against us

  1133. and that

  1134. which was

  1135. spoken by

  1136. our Lord

  1137. was fulfilled

  1138. the time

  1139. will come

  1140. when whoever

  1141. kills you

  1142. will think

  1143. that they

  1144. do a

  1145. service

  1146. to God

  1147. and what

  1148. ended up

  1149. happening

  1150. the letter

  1151. is an

  1152. eyewitness

  1153. account of

  1154. what occurred

  1155. is that

  1156. they selected

  1157. some Christians

  1158. they tracked

  1159. some Christians

  1160. down

  1161. and this

  1162. happens again

  1163. and again

  1164. in early

  1165. church history

  1166. there's these

  1167. slanders

  1168. that come

  1169. against the

  1170. Christians

  1171. they tracked

  1172. down some

  1173. Christians

  1174. and then the

  1175. Romans

  1176. will try

  1177. their very

  1178. best to

  1179. make those

  1180. Christians

  1181. admit

  1182. that those

  1183. slanders

  1184. are true

  1185. and these

  1186. were things

  1187. like Christians

  1188. practiced

  1189. incest

  1190. that they

  1191. practiced

  1192. cannibalism

  1193. they did

  1194. all these

  1195. horrible

  1196. horrible

  1197. things

  1198. that they

  1199. would kill

  1200. little children

  1201. and things

  1202. like that

  1203. and so

  1204. these were

  1205. really awful

  1206. awful slanders

  1207. against Christians

  1208. and being

  1209. in Rome

  1210. which was a

  1211. very brutal

  1212. state where

  1213. torture was

  1214. legal and

  1215. even necessary

  1216. that they

  1217. would torture

  1218. them

  1219. and what

  1220. they did

  1221. is they

  1222. grabbed some

  1223. people

  1224. they have

  1225. some names

  1226. recorded

  1227. people like

  1228. Sanctus

  1229. who is a

  1230. deacon

  1231. from a

  1232. nearby city

  1233. and some

  1234. others

  1235. but the

  1236. letter goes

  1237. on to say

  1238. and Blandina

  1239. through whom

  1240. Christ showed

  1241. that things

  1242. which appear

  1243. mean and

  1244. obscure and

  1245. despicable to

  1246. men are

  1247. with God

  1248. of great

  1249. glory

  1250. and the

  1251. letter goes

  1252. on to say

  1253. that we

  1254. all trembled

  1255. in fear of

  1256. the sufferings

  1257. that their

  1258. companions were

  1259. going to

  1260. undergo

  1261. but Blandina

  1262. was afraid

  1263. for another

  1264. reason

  1265. she feared

  1266. that on

  1267. account of

  1268. the weakness

  1269. of her

  1270. body

  1271. she would

  1272. be unable

  1273. to make

  1274. a bold

  1275. confession

  1276. you start

  1277. piecing things

  1278. together

  1279. and what you

  1280. start realizing

  1281. is that

  1282. Blandina was

  1283. probably a

  1284. small frail

  1285. woman who

  1286. was probably

  1287. poor and

  1288. insignificant

  1289. and she

  1290. was caught

  1291. up in this

  1292. and was

  1293. arrested

  1294. and was set

  1295. to be

  1296. tortured

  1297. and her

  1298. one fear

  1299. was that

  1300. she would

  1301. not have the

  1302. strength to

  1303. loudly refute

  1304. these slanders

  1305. that were

  1306. being lodged

  1307. against them

  1308. the letter

  1309. writers say

  1310. that Blandina

  1311. was filled

  1312. with such

  1313. power

  1314. as to be

  1315. raised above

  1316. those who

  1317. were torturing

  1318. her by turns

  1319. morning till

  1320. evening

  1321. so that they

  1322. acknowledged

  1323. that they

  1324. were conquered

  1325. and could do

  1326. nothing more

  1327. to her

  1328. and they

  1329. were astonished

  1330. at her

  1331. endurance

  1332. the blessed

  1333. woman

  1334. like a

  1335. noble

  1336. athlete

  1337. renewed

  1338. her

  1339. strength

  1340. in her

  1341. confession

  1342. and she

  1343. kept

  1344. exclaiming

  1345. I am

  1346. a Christian

  1347. and there

  1348. is nothing

  1349. vile

  1350. done by

  1351. us

  1352. remember

  1353. that all

  1354. she had

  1355. to do

  1356. was deny

  1357. Christ

  1358. or admit

  1359. to these

  1360. slanders

  1361. to be released

  1362. from these

  1363. sufferings

  1364. and she

  1365. refused

  1366. to

  1367. so

  1368. after

  1369. her

  1370. entire

  1371. body

  1372. was mangled

  1373. from torture

  1374. they

  1375. stopped

  1376. for a

  1377. time

  1378. and

  1379. this is

  1380. very typical

  1381. in early

  1382. Christianity

  1383. that the

  1384. Romans would

  1385. then try

  1386. to make a

  1387. spectacle

  1388. out of

  1389. everything

  1390. so they

  1391. would set

  1392. up a

  1393. day

  1394. like a

  1395. big

  1396. it's very

  1397. perverse

  1398. but a

  1399. big

  1400. celebratory

  1401. day

  1402. where

  1403. everybody

  1404. would come

  1405. to the

  1406. local

  1407. stadium

  1408. and they

  1409. bring out

  1410. these

  1411. folks

  1412. and set

  1413. them

  1414. through

  1415. tortures

  1416. one more

  1417. time

  1418. before

  1419. executing

  1420. them

  1421. hoping

  1422. that

  1423. they

  1424. would

  1425. recant

  1426. their

  1427. faith

  1428. and

  1429. so

  1430. the

  1431. day

  1432. was

  1433. set

  1434. and

  1435. it

  1436. says

  1437. that

  1438. Blandina

  1439. was

  1440. suspended

  1441. on a

  1442. stake

  1443. and

  1444. exposed

  1445. to be

  1446. devoured

  1447. by wild

  1448. beasts

  1449. that they

  1450. were going

  1451. to let

  1452. in

  1453. and

  1454. the

  1455. letter

  1456. says

  1457. this

  1458. because

  1459. she

  1460. appeared

  1461. to be

  1462. hanging

  1463. on a

  1464. cross

  1465. and

  1466. because

  1467. of her

  1468. earnest

  1469. prayers

  1470. she

  1471. inspired

  1472. her

  1473. fellow

  1474. martyrs

  1475. with

  1476. great

  1477. zeal

  1478. for

  1479. they

  1480. looked

  1481. on

  1482. her

  1483. in

  1484. her

  1485. conflict

  1486. and

  1487. they

  1488. beheld

  1489. with

  1490. their

  1491. outward

  1492. eyes

  1493. in

  1494. the

  1495. form

  1496. of

  1497. their

  1498. sister

  1499. the

  1500. one

  1501. who

  1502. was

  1503. crucified

  1504. for

  1505. them

  1506. that

  1507. she

  1508. might

  1509. persuade

  1510. those

  1511. who

  1512. believe

  1513. in

  1514. him

  1515. that

  1516. everyone

  1517. who

  1518. suffers

  1519. for

  1520. the

  1521. glory

  1522. of

  1523. Christ

  1524. always

  1525. has

  1526. fellowship

  1527. with

  1528. the

  1529. living

  1530. God

  1531. they

  1532. go on

  1533. to say

  1534. that

  1535. Blandina

  1536. though

  1537. small

  1538. and weak

  1539. and despised

  1540. yet

  1541. the mighty

  1542. and conquering

  1543. athlete

  1544. she arose

  1545. with zeal

  1546. and overcame

  1547. the adversary

  1548. many times

  1549. and as a

  1550. noble mother

  1551. she encouraged

  1552. her children

  1553. and sent them

  1554. before her

  1555. victorious

  1556. to the king

  1557. and then

  1558. she was

  1559. executed

  1560. after that

  1561. and the letter

  1562. ends by saying

  1563. that the

  1564. heathen

  1565. the pagans

  1566. quote

  1567. confessed

  1568. that never

  1569. among them

  1570. had a woman

  1571. endured

  1572. so many

  1573. and such

  1574. terrible

  1575. tortures

  1576. Blandina

  1577. is

  1578. remarkable

  1579. for many

  1580. reasons

  1581. but

  1582. the one

  1583. I want

  1584. to highlight

  1585. when I

  1586. conclude

  1587. this

  1588. session

  1589. with her

  1590. is

  1591. that

  1592. this

  1593. happened

  1594. in France

  1595. and that

  1596. what her

  1597. actions did

  1598. planted

  1599. the seeds

  1600. of the gospel

  1601. in France

  1602. which

  1603. is still

  1604. a Christian

  1605. country

  1606. to this

  1607. day

  1608. with Christian

  1609. believers

  1610. there

  1611. but this

  1612. happened

  1613. with much

  1614. suffering

  1615. that she

  1616. bore joyfully

  1617. we have

  1618. one more

  1619. similar story

  1620. before we

  1621. go on

  1622. to less

  1623. weightier

  1624. topics

  1625. this one

  1626. is of

  1627. Perpetua

  1628. and Felicity

  1629. these were

  1630. two women

  1631. from Africa

  1632. we don't

  1633. know what

  1634. race they

  1635. were

  1636. this picture

  1637. here

  1638. has portrayed

  1639. them as

  1640. sub-Saharan

  1641. African

  1642. they may

  1643. have been

  1644. there's some

  1645. evidence

  1646. that Perpetua

  1647. at least

  1648. was a Berber

  1649. and that's

  1650. because her

  1651. name implies

  1652. a descent

  1653. from a Berber

  1654. so that means

  1655. she was not

  1656. Greek

  1657. she was not

  1658. Roman

  1659. of descent

  1660. those are

  1661. the two

  1662. privileged

  1663. ethnic groups

  1664. in antiquity

  1665. she was not

  1666. from them

  1667. she was from

  1668. North Africa

  1669. she was

  1670. well educated

  1671. she was

  1672. married

  1673. she had a

  1674. father and

  1675. mother

  1676. two brothers

  1677. one of whom

  1678. like herself

  1679. was a

  1680. catechumen

  1681. meaning just

  1682. an early

  1683. Christian

  1684. just had

  1685. recently made

  1686. the confession

  1687. to follow

  1688. Jesus

  1689. she was

  1690. 22 years

  1691. old

  1692. we don't

  1693. know the

  1694. context

  1695. behind why

  1696. she and

  1697. Felicity and

  1698. some others

  1699. were arrested

  1700. but presumably

  1701. it was similar

  1702. to what happened

  1703. in Lyons

  1704. that some

  1705. rumor goes

  1706. out or

  1707. some governor

  1708. gets upset

  1709. and decides

  1710. he's gonna

  1711. do something

  1712. about the

  1713. Christians

  1714. what is

  1715. remarkable

  1716. about Perpetua

  1717. is that we

  1718. know about

  1719. her from

  1720. her own

  1721. words

  1722. she left

  1723. a journal

  1724. a diary

  1725. and we still

  1726. have excerpts

  1727. from this

  1728. a later

  1729. editor who

  1730. seems to

  1731. have known

  1732. her

  1733. took her

  1734. journal

  1735. and kind

  1736. of prefaced

  1737. it with some

  1738. comments

  1739. and then

  1740. gives excerpts

  1741. of her

  1742. writing

  1743. and then

  1744. wraps it up

  1745. at the end

  1746. and this is

  1747. remarkable

  1748. because she

  1749. that makes

  1750. her the

  1751. first

  1752. female

  1753. Christian

  1754. writer that

  1755. we have

  1756. is Perpetua

  1757. it also

  1758. makes her

  1759. one of the

  1760. earliest

  1761. Christian

  1762. Latin

  1763. writers that

  1764. we have

  1765. she's writing

  1766. around the

  1767. year 200

  1768. AD

  1769. this is

  1770. extremely

  1771. early for

  1772. Latin

  1773. Christian

  1774. literature

  1775. there

  1776. really

  1777. is only

  1778. maybe

  1779. two

  1780. documents

  1781. that

  1782. predate

  1783. this

  1784. that we

  1785. have in

  1786. Latin

  1787. but

  1788. they're

  1789. both

  1790. anonymous

  1791. they're

  1792. very

  1793. very

  1794. short

  1795. and

  1796. so

  1797. she's

  1798. in some

  1799. ways

  1800. the first

  1801. named

  1802. Latin

  1803. author

  1804. that we

  1805. know

  1806. about

  1807. she

  1808. was

  1809. 22

  1810. years

  1811. old

  1812. which

  1813. also

  1814. makes

  1815. her

  1816. the

  1817. youngest

  1818. Latin

  1819. author

  1820. that we

  1821. know

  1822. about

  1823. at least

  1824. that I'm

  1825. aware

  1826. of

  1827. well

  1828. her

  1829. journal

  1830. begins

  1831. and she

  1832. says

  1833. she describes

  1834. her father

  1835. coming to

  1836. her begging

  1837. her to

  1838. recant

  1839. Christ

  1840. and he's

  1841. weeping

  1842. and she

  1843. refuses

  1844. and she's

  1845. she's taken

  1846. into a

  1847. dungeon

  1848. and she

  1849. says

  1850. quote

  1851. after a

  1852. few days

  1853. we were

  1854. taken

  1855. into the

  1856. dungeon

  1857. and I

  1858. was very

  1859. much

  1860. afraid

  1861. because I

  1862. had never

  1863. felt such

  1864. darkness

  1865. oh

  1866. terrible

  1867. day

  1868. oh

  1869. the fierce

  1870. heat

  1871. oh

  1872. the crowds

  1873. and the

  1874. soldiery

  1875. the prisoners

  1876. are just

  1877. packed

  1878. into this

  1879. hot cell

  1880. I was

  1881. very

  1882. unusually

  1883. distressed

  1884. she says

  1885. and then she

  1886. gives us

  1887. a frightful

  1888. detail

  1889. she says

  1890. I was

  1891. very

  1892. unusually

  1893. distressed

  1894. over anxiety

  1895. for my

  1896. infant

  1897. she also

  1898. had an

  1899. infant

  1900. baby

  1901. that she

  1902. was caring

  1903. for

  1904. she says

  1905. there were

  1906. present there

  1907. certain

  1908. deacons of

  1909. the church

  1910. who

  1911. by means

  1912. of a

  1913. gratuity

  1914. this may

  1915. have been

  1916. a bribe

  1917. it may

  1918. have been

  1919. a payment

  1920. that was

  1921. required

  1922. they managed

  1923. to allow

  1924. the prisoners

  1925. to get

  1926. permission

  1927. for the

  1928. prisoners

  1929. to go

  1930. to a

  1931. different

  1932. part

  1933. of the

  1934. dungeon

  1935. that was

  1936. better

  1937. and

  1938. so

  1939. she

  1940. says

  1941. we

  1942. were

  1943. allowed

  1944. to be

  1945. refreshed

  1946. there

  1947. for a

  1948. few

  1949. hours

  1950. in a

  1951. pleasanter

  1952. part

  1953. of the

  1954. prison

  1955. she says

  1956. there

  1957. I nursed

  1958. my child

  1959. who was

  1960. enfeebled

  1961. with hunger

  1962. and I

  1963. obtained

  1964. permission

  1965. for my

  1966. infant

  1967. to remain

  1968. with me

  1969. in the

  1970. dungeon

  1971. and immediately

  1972. I grew

  1973. strong

  1974. and was

  1975. relieved

  1976. from distress

  1977. and anxiety

  1978. about my

  1979. infant

  1980. and the dungeon

  1981. became to me

  1982. as it were

  1983. a palace

  1984. and I

  1985. preferred to be

  1986. there to be

  1987. anywhere else

  1988. she describes

  1989. how providentially

  1990. her child

  1991. was weaned

  1992. and she was

  1993. able to give

  1994. her child

  1995. to her parents

  1996. and her

  1997. brothers and

  1998. sisters

  1999. to take care

  2000. of

  2001. she also

  2002. describes

  2003. several visions

  2004. that she was

  2005. given

  2006. there's one in

  2007. particular

  2008. where there's

  2009. this ladder

  2010. going up

  2011. to heaven

  2012. and there's

  2013. someone

  2014. waiting at

  2015. the top

  2016. that tells

  2017. her

  2018. Perpetua

  2019. I am

  2020. waiting for

  2021. you

  2022. but be

  2023. careful

  2024. that the

  2025. dragon

  2026. does not

  2027. bite you

  2028. also

  2029. with Perpetua

  2030. in prison

  2031. was Felicity

  2032. whom you can

  2033. see there

  2034. and Felicity

  2035. is another

  2036. remarkable

  2037. woman

  2038. when she

  2039. was arrested

  2040. this account

  2041. says that

  2042. she was

  2043. eight months

  2044. pregnant

  2045. and that

  2046. there was

  2047. as the

  2048. day

  2049. appointed

  2050. day

  2051. for this

  2052. exhibition

  2053. where they

  2054. were going

  2055. to bring

  2056. out the

  2057. Christians

  2058. and do

  2059. horrible

  2060. things to

  2061. them

  2062. as that

  2063. day was

  2064. coming

  2065. close

  2066. there was

  2067. a law

  2068. in Rome

  2069. that a

  2070. pregnant

  2071. woman

  2072. was not

  2073. allowed

  2074. to be

  2075. publicly

  2076. punished

  2077. so you

  2078. could torture

  2079. them but you

  2080. couldn't do

  2081. it publicly

  2082. and because

  2083. the folks

  2084. wanted to do

  2085. this publicly

  2086. to Felicity

  2087. they told her

  2088. we're not

  2089. gonna have

  2090. you wait

  2091. and bring

  2092. these other

  2093. folks out

  2094. your brothers

  2095. and sisters

  2096. in Christ

  2097. first and

  2098. we'll wait

  2099. for you

  2100. to give

  2101. birth

  2102. and Felicity

  2103. was grieved

  2104. by this

  2105. because

  2106. well she

  2107. knew her

  2108. fate was

  2109. sealed and

  2110. she wanted

  2111. to die

  2112. with her

  2113. brothers and

  2114. sisters

  2115. and so

  2116. she prayed

  2117. that she

  2118. would give

  2119. birth

  2120. early

  2121. in her

  2122. eighth month

  2123. instead of

  2124. her ninth

  2125. and she

  2126. did

  2127. and

  2128. she gave

  2129. birth in

  2130. prison

  2131. and her

  2132. little girl

  2133. was given

  2134. to a

  2135. sister

  2136. in Christ

  2137. to bring

  2138. up

  2139. this was

  2140. very common

  2141. in the

  2142. ancient

  2143. world

  2144. the day

  2145. before

  2146. that they

  2147. were to

  2148. be executed

  2149. or to be

  2150. exhibited

  2151. and executed

  2152. they had a

  2153. last meal

  2154. and again

  2155. a gruesome

  2156. custom

  2157. all the

  2158. people would

  2159. come and

  2160. gather around

  2161. and watch

  2162. the folks

  2163. who were

  2164. about to

  2165. die

  2166. eating their

  2167. last meal

  2168. as kind

  2169. of a way

  2170. to be

  2171. entertained

  2172. and one

  2173. of the

  2174. future

  2175. martyrs

  2176. very boldly

  2177. said to

  2178. them

  2179. quote

  2180. note

  2181. our faces

  2182. diligently

  2183. that you

  2184. may recognize

  2185. them

  2186. on the

  2187. day of

  2188. judgment

  2189. and it

  2190. says thus

  2191. the crowd

  2192. departed

  2193. astonished

  2194. and from

  2195. these many

  2196. believed

  2197. the last

  2198. words of

  2199. perpetua

  2200. when she

  2201. was cast

  2202. before a

  2203. man with

  2204. a sword

  2205. to execute

  2206. her

  2207. was

  2208. stand

  2209. fast

  2210. in the

  2211. faith

  2212. and love

  2213. one another

  2214. all of

  2215. you

  2216. and do

  2217. not be

  2218. offended

  2219. at my

  2220. sufferings

  2221. perpetua

  2222. and felicity

  2223. are models

  2224. of jesus

  2225. words

  2226. when he

  2227. says that

  2228. anyone

  2229. who

  2230. loves

  2231. husband

  2232. or wife

  2233. or children

  2234. or houses

  2235. or home

  2236. more than

  2237. me

  2238. is not

  2239. worthy

  2240. of me

  2241. and this

  2242. is exemplified

  2243. by these

  2244. two women

  2245. who

  2246. sacrificed

  2247. more than

  2248. we can

  2249. possibly imagine

  2250. in many

  2251. ways

  2252. and this

  2253. was acknowledged

  2254. by the early

  2255. church

  2256. this is

  2257. an inscription

  2258. from

  2259. the third

  2260. century

  2261. and it

  2262. mentions

  2263. perpetua

  2264. and felicity

  2265. as martyrs

  2266. it mentions

  2267. their other

  2268. fellow martyrs

  2269. saturus

  2270. revocatus

  2271. so here's

  2272. the inscription

  2273. it's heavily

  2274. damaged

  2275. you can

  2276. see it

  2277. pieced back

  2278. together

  2279. and you

  2280. can see

  2281. the name

  2282. felicity

  2283. and perpetua

  2284. here

  2285. and it's

  2286. hard to

  2287. make out

  2288. but it

  2289. f-e-l-i-c-i

  2290. and then

  2291. perpetua

  2292. is there

  2293. and this

  2294. was discovered

  2295. some time

  2296. ago

  2297. but it

  2298. goes to

  2299. show what

  2300. an impact

  2301. these women

  2302. had on

  2303. their church

  2304. that there

  2305. would be

  2306. monuments

  2307. put up

  2308. in their

  2309. honor

  2310. and that

  2311. those

  2312. monuments

  2313. would still

  2314. survive

  2315. in a sense

  2316. or in a

  2317. way

  2318. to this

  2319. day

  2320. well moving

  2321. on

  2322. to a

  2323. woman

  2324. of a

  2325. very

  2326. different

  2327. station

  2328. in life

  2329. that we

  2330. know about

  2331. from this

  2332. statue

  2333. this is a

  2334. famous statue

  2335. called the

  2336. statue of

  2337. Hippolytus

  2338. I could

  2339. talk for

  2340. hours about

  2341. this

  2342. my research

  2343. has concerned

  2344. this statue

  2345. quite a bit

  2346. but what's

  2347. interesting

  2348. about the

  2349. statue

  2350. is the

  2351. inscriptions

  2352. on the

  2353. statue's

  2354. chair

  2355. and

  2356. these

  2357. inscriptions

  2358. allow us

  2359. to date

  2360. the statue

  2361. and they

  2362. date to

  2363. the year

  2364. 222

  2365. AD

  2366. and

  2367. in fact

  2368. the inscription

  2369. says the

  2370. first year

  2371. of Emperor

  2372. Alexander

  2373. Severus

  2374. and it's

  2375. of March

  2376. or April

  2377. of that

  2378. year

  2379. it's the

  2380. first year

  2381. of his

  2382. reign

  2383. it's

  2384. 222

  2385. AD

  2386. and

  2387. when you

  2388. start

  2389. putting some

  2390. pieces together

  2391. you realize

  2392. that this

  2393. statue was

  2394. made

  2395. just a

  2396. couple

  2397. months

  2398. or it

  2399. was at

  2400. least

  2401. inscribed

  2402. a couple

  2403. months

  2404. after

  2405. Alexander

  2406. became

  2407. Emperor

  2408. and

  2409. it also

  2410. turns out

  2411. that Alexander

  2412. was only

  2413. 14 years

  2414. old when he

  2415. became Emperor

  2416. so he's a

  2417. 14 year old

  2418. kid

  2419. that this

  2420. statue's

  2421. talking about

  2422. and when you

  2423. read through

  2424. the histories

  2425. you realize

  2426. that

  2427. Alexander's

  2428. mother

  2429. was really

  2430. the power

  2431. behind the

  2432. throne

  2433. her name

  2434. was Empress

  2435. Memea

  2436. and Empress

  2437. Memea

  2438. the mother

  2439. of Alexander

  2440. Severus

  2441. patronized

  2442. the Christians

  2443. and

  2444. what this

  2445. statue

  2446. seems to

  2447. be

  2448. now

  2449. there's

  2450. no

  2451. hard

  2452. evidence

  2453. for this

  2454. but you

  2455. put the

  2456. pieces

  2457. together

  2458. and it

  2459. seems like

  2460. what's

  2461. going on

  2462. is that

  2463. Emperor

  2464. Severus

  2465. became

  2466. Christian

  2467. his

  2468. or Emperor

  2469. Severus

  2470. became an

  2471. emperor

  2472. his mother

  2473. patronized

  2474. the Christians

  2475. and was now

  2476. really the

  2477. ruling power

  2478. in the

  2479. empire

  2480. and that

  2481. this

  2482. statue

  2483. is

  2484. was able

  2485. to be

  2486. made

  2487. because of

  2488. this new

  2489. found

  2490. freedom

  2491. that Christians

  2492. had in

  2493. Rome

  2494. and in

  2495. fact

  2496. one of

  2497. the

  2498. inscriptions

  2499. there's

  2500. several

  2501. of them

  2502. one of

  2503. them

  2504. indicates

  2505. that

  2506. Hippolytus

  2507. wrote a

  2508. letter

  2509. to the

  2510. Empress

  2511. and we

  2512. have an

  2513. excerpt from

  2514. that letter

  2515. about what

  2516. he says

  2517. we don't

  2518. know the

  2519. context

  2520. he's

  2521. encouraging

  2522. her about

  2523. the

  2524. resurrection

  2525. we also

  2526. know that

  2527. Empress

  2528. Memea

  2529. would summon

  2530. one of

  2531. the famous

  2532. theologians

  2533. of the

  2534. early church

  2535. to her

  2536. to preach

  2537. to her

  2538. and that

  2539. she would

  2540. send down

  2541. a chariot

  2542. with

  2543. soldiers

  2544. to take

  2545. him

  2546. on a

  2547. hundred

  2548. mile

  2549. journey

  2550. to go

  2551. see her

  2552. and preach

  2553. to her

  2554. so

  2555. it certainly

  2556. seems like

  2557. she was very

  2558. interested

  2559. in Christianity

  2560. we don't know

  2561. if she

  2562. actually was a

  2563. Christian or

  2564. not

  2565. there's obviously

  2566. suggestive that

  2567. she was

  2568. and

  2569. Emperor

  2570. Severus

  2571. was also

  2572. quite benevolent

  2573. as he grew

  2574. older

  2575. and became

  2576. an adult

  2577. he was very

  2578. benevolent

  2579. towards Christians

  2580. and this

  2581. is exemplified

  2582. by the fact

  2583. that when

  2584. he was

  2585. overthrown

  2586. about 13

  2587. years later

  2588. so he

  2589. would have

  2590. been 26

  2591. 27 years

  2592. old

  2593. when he

  2594. was overthrown

  2595. right away

  2596. the bishops

  2597. of Rome

  2598. were rounded

  2599. up and executed

  2600. after he

  2601. was overthrown

  2602. and we also

  2603. know that there

  2604. were many

  2605. Christians in

  2606. the household

  2607. of the

  2608. Severan

  2609. dynasty

  2610. of the

  2611. household of

  2612. the emperor

  2613. at that time

  2614. so again

  2615. we have these

  2616. scraps

  2617. these little

  2618. crumbs

  2619. that we

  2620. got to

  2621. gobble up

  2622. but

  2623. this

  2624. the woman

  2625. the empress

  2626. here's a

  2627. here's a

  2628. bust of

  2629. her

  2630. she seems

  2631. to have

  2632. had an

  2633. enormous

  2634. impact

  2635. on the

  2636. early church

  2637. in patronizing

  2638. them

  2639. in protecting

  2640. them

  2641. and in

  2642. in listening

  2643. to sermons

  2644. we know she

  2645. listened to

  2646. several of

  2647. them at

  2648. least

  2649. inviting these

  2650. theologians

  2651. like Hippolytus

  2652. and like

  2653. Origen

  2654. another theologian

  2655. to preach

  2656. to her

  2657. but we

  2658. wish we

  2659. knew more

  2660. this is one

  2661. of those

  2662. areas that's

  2663. ripe for

  2664. discovery

  2665. you know

  2666. presumably

  2667. an empress

  2668. would leave

  2669. some information

  2670. about her

  2671. that we

  2672. don't have

  2673. so maybe

  2674. one day

  2675. we'll find

  2676. out more

  2677. well we've

  2678. talked about

  2679. early

  2680. Christian

  2681. women

  2682. martyrs

  2683. and empress

  2684. but now I

  2685. want to

  2686. move to

  2687. a female

  2688. slave

  2689. and missionary

  2690. Nino

  2691. of Georgia

  2692. now we're

  2693. in the year

  2694. 300

  2695. so with

  2696. when we

  2697. were talking

  2698. about Blandina

  2699. that was

  2700. 170

  2701. Perpetua

  2702. was 200

  2703. empress

  2704. mameo

  2705. was 222

  2706. now we're

  2707. in the year

  2708. 300

  2709. or 320

  2710. we're in

  2711. Georgia

  2712. Georgia

  2713. is a country

  2714. north of

  2715. Iran

  2716. south of

  2717. Russia

  2718. east of

  2719. Turkey

  2720. in the

  2721. Caucasus

  2722. west of

  2723. the Caspian

  2724. Sea

  2725. and we

  2726. have this

  2727. account

  2728. of how

  2729. the gospel

  2730. came to

  2731. the Georgian

  2732. people

  2733. and it's

  2734. by a church

  2735. historian

  2736. named

  2737. Rufinus

  2738. who's

  2739. writing

  2740. around the

  2741. year

  2742. 380

  2743. maybe

  2744. maybe 50

  2745. years

  2746. afterwards

  2747. and he

  2748. says

  2749. it was

  2750. at this

  2751. time too

  2752. that the

  2753. Georgians

  2754. accepted

  2755. the word

  2756. of God

  2757. and faith

  2758. in the

  2759. kingdom

  2760. to come

  2761. and the

  2762. cause of

  2763. this great

  2764. benefit

  2765. was a

  2766. woman

  2767. captive

  2768. who lived

  2769. among them

  2770. and who

  2771. led such

  2772. a faithful

  2773. sober

  2774. and modest

  2775. life

  2776. spending

  2777. all of

  2778. her days

  2779. and nights

  2780. in sleepless

  2781. supplication

  2782. to God

  2783. that

  2784. the local

  2785. inhabitants

  2786. started to

  2787. wonder

  2788. at what

  2789. she was

  2790. doing

  2791. and this

  2792. curiosity

  2793. led them

  2794. to ask

  2795. what she

  2796. was about

  2797. and she

  2798. replied

  2799. with the

  2800. truth

  2801. that she

  2802. worshipped

  2803. Jesus

  2804. as God

  2805. and this

  2806. answer

  2807. made the

  2808. barbarians

  2809. wonder

  2810. only

  2811. at this

  2812. novelty

  2813. this kind

  2814. of strangeness

  2815. they didn't

  2816. know what

  2817. to make

  2818. of it

  2819. Rufinus

  2820. goes on

  2821. to say

  2822. that

  2823. there was

  2824. a custom

  2825. amongst

  2826. the Georgians

  2827. that if a

  2828. child fell

  2829. sick

  2830. and the

  2831. mother

  2832. couldn't

  2833. help the

  2834. child

  2835. that the

  2836. mother would

  2837. bring the

  2838. sick child

  2839. from house

  2840. to house

  2841. asking people

  2842. to help

  2843. do you know

  2844. what to do

  2845. do you know

  2846. what to do

  2847. and no one

  2848. knew how to

  2849. cure this

  2850. child

  2851. and she

  2852. eventually

  2853. this mother

  2854. came to

  2855. Nino

  2856. and Nino

  2857. said

  2858. that quote

  2859. she knew

  2860. of no

  2861. human remedy

  2862. but she

  2863. declared

  2864. that Christ

  2865. her God

  2866. whom she

  2867. worshipped

  2868. could heal

  2869. the child

  2870. and after

  2871. she had

  2872. put the

  2873. child

  2874. on a

  2875. shirt

  2876. on the

  2877. ground

  2878. poured

  2879. out

  2880. above

  2881. the

  2882. child

  2883. her

  2884. prayer

  2885. to

  2886. the

  2887. Lord

  2888. she

  2889. gave

  2890. the

  2891. infant

  2892. back

  2893. to

  2894. its

  2895. mother

  2896. in

  2897. good

  2898. health

  2899. and

  2900. word

  2901. of

  2902. this

  2903. got

  2904. around

  2905. to

  2906. many

  2907. people

  2908. and

  2909. news

  2910. of

  2911. the

  2912. wonderful

  2913. deed

  2914. reached

  2915. the

  2916. ears

  2917. of

  2918. the

  2919. queen

  2920. who

  2921. was

  2922. suffering

  2923. from

  2924. a

  2925. bodily

  2926. illness

  2927. of

  2928. the

  2929. gravest

  2930. sort

  2931. and

  2932. had

  2933. been

  2934. she

  2935. asked

  2936. for

  2937. the

  2938. woman

  2939. captive

  2940. to

  2941. be

  2942. brought

  2943. to

  2944. her

  2945. but

  2946. Nino

  2947. declined

  2948. this

  2949. is one

  2950. of those

  2951. moments

  2952. where

  2953. you know

  2954. I feel

  2955. like I

  2956. would

  2957. have

  2958. gone

  2959. I don't

  2960. know

  2961. why

  2962. she

  2963. didn't

  2964. go

  2965. but

  2966. you

  2967. see

  2968. that

  2969. in

  2970. the

  2971. gospels

  2972. Jesus

  2973. does

  2974. things

  2975. like

  2976. this

  2977. where

  2978. Jesus

  2979. is

  2980. not

  2981. he's

  2982. not

  2983. the

  2984. carnival

  2985. come

  2986. to

  2987. town

  2988. he's

  2989. not

  2990. a

  2991. wonder

  2992. worker

  2993. he's

  2994. not

  2995. here

  2996. to

  2997. just

  2998. do

  2999. miracles

  3000. at

  3001. the

  3002. snap

  3003. of

  3004. someone's

  3005. fingers

  3006. that

  3007. he's

  3008. there

  3009. to

  3010. build

  3011. faith

  3012. in

  3013. God

  3014. and

  3015. call

  3016. people

  3017. to

  3018. repentance

  3019. so

  3020. Jesus

  3021. often

  3022. is a

  3023. little

  3024. cagey

  3025. with

  3026. his

  3027. miracles

  3028. and

  3029. Nino

  3030. was

  3031. too

  3032. and

  3033. so

  3034. after

  3035. she

  3036. declined

  3037. the

  3038. queen

  3039. quote

  3040. ordered

  3041. that

  3042. she

  3043. herself

  3044. be

  3045. brought

  3046. to

  3047. the

  3048. captive's

  3049. hovel

  3050. and

  3051. having

  3052. placed

  3053. herself

  3054. on

  3055. the

  3056. ground

  3057. the

  3058. captive

  3059. that's

  3060. Nino

  3061. invoked

  3062. Christ's

  3063. name

  3064. and

  3065. no

  3066. sooner

  3067. was

  3068. her

  3069. prayer

  3070. done

  3071. than

  3072. the

  3073. queen

  3074. stood

  3075. up

  3076. healthy

  3077. and

  3078. vigorous

  3079. and

  3080. Nino

  3081. taught

  3082. her

  3083. that

  3084. it

  3085. was

  3086. Christ

  3087. the

  3088. son

  3089. of

  3090. God

  3091. most

  3092. high

  3093. who

  3094. had

  3095. conferred

  3096. healing

  3097. upon

  3098. her

  3099. and

  3100. Nino

  3101. advised

  3102. her

  3103. to

  3104. invoke

  3105. Christ

  3106. whom

  3107. she

  3108. should

  3109. know

  3110. to

  3111. be

  3112. the

  3113. author

  3114. of

  3115. her

  3116. life

  3117. and

  3118. well

  3119. being

  3120. and

  3121. the

  3122. queen

  3123. returned

  3124. home

  3125. joyfully

  3126. and

  3127. the

  3128. king

  3129. is

  3130. wondering

  3131. what's

  3132. going

  3133. on

  3134. and

  3135. she

  3136. says

  3137. I

  3138. was

  3139. healed

  3140. by

  3141. this

  3142. slave

  3143. woman

  3144. and

  3145. gold

  3146. or

  3147. silver

  3148. or

  3149. something

  3150. and

  3151. the

  3152. queen

  3153. said

  3154. that

  3155. no

  3156. she

  3157. doesn't

  3158. want

  3159. any

  3160. of

  3161. these

  3162. she

  3163. despises

  3164. gold

  3165. and

  3166. silver

  3167. this

  3168. alone

  3169. may

  3170. we

  3171. give

  3172. her

  3173. as

  3174. a

  3175. gift

  3176. that

  3177. we

  3178. worship

  3179. Christ

  3180. who

  3181. cured

  3182. me

  3183. but

  3184. Rufina

  3185. says

  3186. that

  3187. the

  3188. king

  3189. was

  3190. not

  3191. inclined

  3192. to

  3193. do

  3194. so

  3195. and

  3196. he

  3197. put

  3198. it

  3199. off

  3200. he

  3201. went

  3202. on

  3203. a

  3204. hunting

  3205. trip

  3206. and

  3207. he

  3208. was

  3209. trapped

  3210. somewhere

  3211. in the

  3212. deep

  3213. forest

  3214. a

  3215. storm

  3216. drew

  3217. in

  3218. it

  3219. was

  3220. terrible

  3221. dark

  3222. he

  3223. got

  3224. lost

  3225. each

  3226. of

  3227. his

  3228. companions

  3229. Rufina

  3230. says

  3231. wandered

  3232. away

  3233. and

  3234. he

  3235. was

  3236. alone

  3237. and

  3238. he

  3239. did

  3240. not

  3241. know

  3242. what

  3243. to

  3244. do

  3245. or

  3246. where

  3247. to

  3248. turn

  3249. Rufina

  3250. says

  3251. that

  3252. there

  3253. arose

  3254. in

  3255. his

  3256. heart

  3257. when

  3258. he

  3259. was

  3260. near

  3261. to

  3262. losing

  3263. hope

  3264. that

  3265. if

  3266. the

  3267. Christ

  3268. preached

  3269. to

  3270. his

  3271. wife

  3272. by

  3273. the

  3274. woman

  3275. captive

  3276. were

  3277. really

  3278. God

  3279. that

  3280. he

  3281. might

  3282. free

  3283. him

  3284. the

  3285. king

  3286. from

  3287. this

  3288. darkness

  3289. and

  3290. no

  3291. sooner

  3292. had

  3293. he

  3294. vowed

  3295. this

  3296. not

  3297. even

  3298. verbally

  3299. but

  3300. only

  3301. mentally

  3302. than

  3303. the

  3304. daylight

  3305. returned

  3306. to

  3307. the

  3308. world

  3309. and

  3310. guided

  3311. the

  3312. king

  3313. safely

  3314. to

  3315. the

  3316. city

  3317. and

  3318. he

  3319. explained

  3320. directly

  3321. to

  3322. the

  3323. queen

  3324. what

  3325. had

  3326. happened

  3327. and

  3328. he

  3329. required

  3330. that

  3331. the

  3332. woman

  3333. captive

  3334. be

  3335. summoned

  3336. at

  3337. once

  3338. and

  3339. so

  3340. that

  3341. she

  3342. might

  3343. tell

  3344. them

  3345. how

  3346. she

  3347. worships

  3348. and

  3349. then

  3350. after

  3351. that

  3352. happens

  3353. the

  3354. king

  3355. called

  3356. together

  3357. his

  3358. people

  3359. he

  3360. explained

  3361. the

  3362. matter

  3363. from

  3364. the

  3365. beginning

  3366. and

  3367. what

  3368. happened

  3369. to

  3370. them

  3371. and

  3372. taught

  3373. them

  3374. the

  3375. faith

  3376. and

  3377. a

  3378. church

  3379. was

  3380. put

  3381. up

  3382. without

  3383. delay

  3384. Nino

  3385. is

  3386. revered

  3387. in

  3388. Georgian

  3389. history

  3390. as

  3391. she's

  3392. often

  3393. called

  3394. the

  3395. apostle

  3396. to

  3397. the

  3398. Georgians

  3399. the

  3400. missionary

  3401. to

  3402. the

  3403. Georgians

  3404. and

  3405. from

  3406. that

  3407. day

  3408. to

  3409. this

  3410. day

  3411. Georgia

  3412. is

  3413. still

  3414. a

  3415. Christian

  3416. country

  3417. and

  3418. that

  3419. was

  3420. around

  3421. 330

  3422. or

  3423. so

  3424. 340

  3425. AD

  3426. Nino

  3427. is

  3428. the

  3429. patron

  3430. saint

  3431. of

  3432. Georgia

  3433. well

  3434. we've

  3435. talked

  3436. about

  3437. martyrs

  3438. and

  3439. missionaries

  3440. and

  3441. empresses

  3442. I want

  3443. to turn

  3444. now

  3445. though

  3446. to talk

  3447. about

  3448. poets

  3449. and

  3450. I

  3451. speak

  3452. of

  3453. a

  3454. woman

  3455. named

  3456. Faltonia

  3457. Batisha

  3458. Proba

  3459. she

  3460. lived

  3461. between

  3462. 300

  3463. and

  3464. 360

  3465. or so

  3466. AD

  3467. she

  3468. was

  3469. from

  3470. a

  3471. very

  3472. well

  3473. to

  3474. do

  3475. family

  3476. her

  3477. father

  3478. was

  3479. consul

  3480. that's

  3481. like

  3482. number

  3483. two

  3484. in

  3485. the

  3486. empire

  3487. her

  3488. grandfather

  3489. also

  3490. had

  3491. been

  3492. consul

  3493. she

  3494. married

  3495. into

  3496. a

  3497. powerful

  3498. family

  3499. she

  3500. had

  3501. two

  3502. sons

  3503. who

  3504. were

  3505. high

  3506. ranking

  3507. her

  3508. family

  3509. was

  3510. pagan

  3511. but

  3512. she

  3513. converted

  3514. to

  3515. christianity

  3516. as

  3517. an

  3518. adult

  3519. and

  3520. her

  3521. husband

  3522. and

  3523. her

  3524. two

  3525. sons

  3526. joined

  3527. her

  3528. we

  3529. know

  3530. of

  3531. Proba

  3532. almost

  3533. exclusively

  3534. from

  3535. a

  3536. poem

  3537. that

  3538. she

  3539. wrote

  3540. it's

  3541. called

  3542. the

  3543. this

  3544. is

  3545. a

  3546. illuminated

  3547. manuscript

  3548. of

  3549. the

  3550. poem

  3551. and

  3552. that's

  3553. her

  3554. there

  3555. and

  3556. the

  3557. poem

  3558. is

  3559. called

  3560. the

  3561. Cento

  3562. Virgilianus

  3563. de

  3564. Laudibus

  3565. Christi

  3566. or

  3567. a

  3568. Virgilian

  3569. Cento

  3570. concerning

  3571. the

  3572. glory

  3573. of

  3574. Christ

  3575. and

  3576. what

  3577. she

  3578. did

  3579. in

  3580. this

  3581. poem

  3582. it

  3583. sounds

  3584. a

  3585. little

  3586. strange

  3587. to

  3588. us

  3589. but

  3590. it

  3591. was

  3592. very

  3593. normal

  3594. in

  3595. the

  3596. ancient

  3597. world

  3598. what

  3599. she

  3600. did

  3601. is

  3602. she

  3603. took

  3604. the

  3605. epic

  3606. Roman

  3607. poet

  3608. Virgil

  3609. Virgil

  3610. had

  3611. written

  3612. about

  3613. 300

  3614. years

  3615. earlier

  3616. he

  3617. died

  3618. in

  3619. 40

  3620. BC

  3621. he

  3622. was

  3623. like

  3624. the

  3625. poet

  3626. laureate

  3627. of

  3628. the

  3629. Roman

  3630. Empire

  3631. the

  3632. patron

  3633. of

  3634. Roman

  3635. paganism

  3636. and

  3637. Roman

  3638. culture

  3639. this

  3640. brilliant

  3641. poet

  3642. of course

  3643. his most

  3644. famous

  3645. work is

  3646. the

  3647. Aeneid

  3648. some

  3649. of you

  3650. may

  3651. have

  3652. read

  3653. it

  3654. and

  3655. what

  3656. she

  3657. did

  3658. is

  3659. she

  3660. took

  3661. his

  3662. poetry

  3663. and

  3664. excerpted

  3665. various

  3666. phrases

  3667. from

  3668. it

  3669. and

  3670. did

  3671. some

  3672. rearranging

  3673. to

  3674. create

  3675. a

  3676. poem

  3677. to

  3678. honor

  3679. Christ

  3680. but

  3681. in

  3682. the

  3683. style

  3684. and

  3685. the

  3686. wording

  3687. of

  3688. Virgil

  3689. and

  3690. this

  3691. was

  3692. remarkable

  3693. because

  3694. it

  3695. shows

  3696. that

  3697. Christians

  3698. at

  3699. this

  3700. time

  3701. many

  3702. of

  3703. them

  3704. were

  3705. not

  3706. trying

  3707. to

  3708. reject

  3709. wholesale

  3710. Roman

  3711. culture

  3712. Greek

  3713. culture

  3714. they

  3715. were

  3716. trying

  3717. to

  3718. repurpose

  3719. it

  3720. and

  3721. adapt

  3722. it

  3723. to

  3724. the

  3725. gospel

  3726. and

  3727. so

  3728. what

  3729. Proba

  3730. did

  3731. with

  3732. great

  3733. success

  3734. was

  3735. to

  3736. make

  3737. a

  3738. poem

  3739. using

  3740. the

  3741. words

  3742. of

  3743. Virgil

  3744. but

  3745. telling

  3746. the

  3747. story

  3748. of

  3749. the

  3750. Bible

  3751. and

  3752. telling

  3753. the

  3754. story

  3755. of

  3756. Christ

  3757. and

  3758. this

  3759. would

  3760. be

  3761. if

  3762. there

  3763. was

  3764. a

  3765. hymn

  3766. that

  3767. you

  3768. really

  3769. liked

  3770. that

  3771. you

  3772. added

  3773. some

  3774. verses

  3775. to

  3776. or

  3777. if

  3778. there

  3779. was

  3780. a

  3781. song

  3782. that

  3783. was

  3784. so

  3785. beautiful

  3786. wasn't

  3787. really

  3788. about

  3789. God

  3790. but

  3791. if

  3792. you

  3793. could

  3794. rearrange

  3795. some

  3796. stuff

  3797. and

  3798. make

  3799. it

  3800. sound

  3801. great

  3802. many

  3803. many

  3804. of

  3805. hymns

  3806. come

  3807. from

  3808. folk

  3809. songs

  3810. where

  3811. people

  3812. have

  3813. done

  3814. this

  3815. very

  3816. kind

  3817. of

  3818. thing

  3819. so

  3820. I

  3821. wanted

  3822. to

  3823. just

  3824. read

  3825. you

  3826. a

  3827. quick

  3828. text

  3829. now

  3830. God

  3831. almighty

  3832. of course

  3833. it's

  3834. not

  3835. going to

  3836. sound

  3837. poetic

  3838. because

  3839. it's

  3840. in

  3841. translation

  3842. so

  3843. forgive

  3844. me

  3845. now

  3846. God

  3847. almighty

  3848. I

  3849. pray

  3850. receive

  3851. this

  3852. sacred

  3853. song

  3854. loosen

  3855. the

  3856. mouth

  3857. of

  3858. your

  3859. eternal

  3860. seven

  3861. fold

  3862. spirit

  3863. and

  3864. open

  3865. up

  3866. my

  3867. heart's

  3868. inner

  3869. chambers

  3870. in

  3871. order

  3872. that

  3873. I

  3874. proba

  3875. may

  3876. disclose

  3877. all

  3878. mysteries

  3879. of

  3880. the

  3881. poet

  3882. that's

  3883. Virgil

  3884. I

  3885. will

  3886. declare

  3887. that

  3888. Virgil

  3889. sang

  3890. about

  3891. the

  3892. pious

  3893. feats

  3894. of

  3895. Christ

  3896. I

  3897. will

  3898. relate

  3899. from

  3900. the

  3901. beginning

  3902. a

  3903. subject

  3904. known

  3905. to

  3906. all

  3907. oh

  3908. father

  3909. oh

  3910. eternal

  3911. might

  3912. over

  3913. people

  3914. and

  3915. things

  3916. make

  3917. my

  3918. path

  3919. easy

  3920. and

  3921. glide

  3922. into

  3923. our

  3924. souls

  3925. and

  3926. then she

  3927. begins

  3928. with

  3929. Genesis

  3930. she

  3931. says

  3932. in

  3933. the

  3934. beginning

  3935. for

  3936. before

  3937. there

  3938. were

  3939. fires

  3940. of

  3941. celestial

  3942. bodies

  3943. before

  3944. there

  3945. was

  3946. bright

  3947. ether

  3948. or

  3949. air

  3950. there

  3951. was

  3952. only

  3953. black

  3954. night

  3955. riding

  3956. in

  3957. its

  3958. chariot

  3959. which

  3960. held

  3961. the

  3962. heavens

  3963. and

  3964. chaos

  3965. extended

  3966. headlong

  3967. deep

  3968. into

  3969. shadows

  3970. as

  3971. the

  3972. eye

  3973. gazes

  3974. up

  3975. to

  3976. ethereal

  3977. Olympus

  3978. in

  3979. heaven

  3980. but

  3981. then

  3982. the

  3983. almighty

  3984. father

  3985. who

  3986. has

  3987. supreme

  3988. power

  3989. over

  3990. things

  3991. he

  3992. separated

  3993. the

  3994. murky

  3995. air

  3996. and

  3997. dispersed

  3998. the

  3999. shadows

  4000. and

  4001. he

  4002. divided

  4003. the

  4004. world

  4005. in

  4006. halves

  4007. for

  4008. the

  4009. light

  4010. and

  4011. for

  4012. the

  4013. shadows

  4014. as

  4015. well

  4016. and

  4017. he

  4018. observed

  4019. all

  4020. the

  4021. stars

  4022. gliding

  4023. over

  4024. the

  4025. silent

  4026. sky

  4027. turning

  4028. his

  4029. watchful

  4030. eyes

  4031. to

  4032. the

  4033. region

  4034. that

  4035. withstood

  4036. the

  4037. southern

  4038. heat

  4039. and

  4040. which

  4041. turned

  4042. its

  4043. back

  4044. towards

  4045. the

  4046. north

  4047. pole

  4048. and

  4049. when

  4050. he

  4051. had

  4052. seen

  4053. that

  4054. all

  4055. was

  4056. still

  4057. under

  4058. a

  4059. peaceful

  4060. sky

  4061. the

  4062. almighty

  4063. gave

  4064. numbers

  4065. and

  4066. names

  4067. to

  4068. the

  4069. stars

  4070. and

  4071. equally

  4072. divided

  4073. so

  4074. that

  4075. was

  4076. like

  4077. the

  4078. first

  4079. day

  4080. of

  4081. Genesis

  4082. she

  4083. did

  4084. and

  4085. then

  4086. as

  4087. she

  4088. goes

  4089. through

  4090. her

  4091. poem

  4092. she

  4093. eventually

  4094. comes

  4095. to

  4096. Jesus

  4097. she

  4098. says

  4099. now

  4100. father

  4101. I

  4102. turn

  4103. to

  4104. you

  4105. once

  4106. again

  4107. and

  4108. to

  4109. your

  4110. great

  4111. plans

  4112. I

  4113. set

  4114. a

  4115. greater

  4116. work

  4117. in

  4118. motion

  4119. I

  4120. move

  4121. towards

  4122. the

  4123. prophecies

  4124. that

  4125. were

  4126. spoken

  4127. of

  4128. of

  4129. old

  4130. for

  4131. your

  4132. child

  4133. descended

  4134. from

  4135. heaven

  4136. on

  4137. high

  4138. and

  4139. at

  4140. last

  4141. brought

  4142. aid

  4143. to

  4144. us

  4145. who

  4146. wished

  4147. for

  4148. it

  4149. with

  4150. the

  4151. advent

  4152. of

  4153. God

  4154. when

  4155. at

  4156. first

  4157. a

  4158. woman

  4159. who

  4160. had

  4161. the

  4162. appearance

  4163. of

  4164. a

  4165. maiden

  4166. this

  4167. is

  4168. Mary

  4169. gave

  4170. birth

  4171. to

  4172. a

  4173. boy

  4174. who

  4175. was

  4176. neither

  4177. of

  4178. our

  4179. race

  4180. nor

  4181. of

  4182. our

  4183. blood

  4184. she's

  4185. speaking

  4186. about

  4187. how

  4188. Jesus

  4189. was

  4190. not

  4191. Roman

  4192. he

  4193. was

  4194. not

  4195. Latin

  4196. of

  4197. Latin

  4198. descent

  4199. he

  4200. was

  4201. of

  4202. Jewish

  4203. descent

  4204. many

  4205. prophets

  4206. of old

  4207. had

  4208. sung

  4209. of

  4210. these

  4211. late

  4212. these

  4213. recent

  4214. signs

  4215. that

  4216. a man

  4217. with

  4218. power

  4219. over

  4220. the

  4221. earth

  4222. and

  4223. men

  4224. would

  4225. arrive

  4226. from

  4227. heavenly

  4228. seed

  4229. and take

  4230. possession

  4231. of the

  4232. world

  4233. and the

  4234. promised

  4235. day

  4236. had

  4237. now

  4238. arrived

  4239. her

  4240. and the

  4241. she

  4242. goes

  4243. on

  4244. to

  4245. talk

  4246. about

  4247. the

  4248. slaughter

  4249. of

  4250. children

  4251. that

  4252. Herod

  4253. carried

  4254. out

  4255. in the

  4256. gospel

  4257. of

  4258. Matthew

  4259. and

  4260. she

  4261. describes

  4262. Mary

  4263. she says

  4264. who was

  4265. frightened

  4266. by all

  4267. the

  4268. crying

  4269. carried

  4270. her

  4271. child

  4272. in

  4273. her

  4274. bosom

  4275. through

  4276. this

  4277. raging

  4278. disorder

  4279. and

  4280. fled

  4281. to a

  4282. well

  4283. stocked

  4284. stable

  4285. and here

  4286. under

  4287. the roof

  4288. of a

  4289. lowly

  4290. house

  4291. she

  4292. nursed

  4293. her

  4294. son

  4295. the

  4296. poem

  4297. unfortunately

  4298. kind of

  4299. breaks

  4300. off

  4301. it has

  4302. these

  4303. beautiful

  4304. passages

  4305. but of

  4306. course

  4307. what

  4308. Proba

  4309. has set

  4310. out to

  4311. do

  4312. is

  4313. very

  4314. difficult

  4315. because

  4316. she's

  4317. limited

  4318. by the

  4319. words

  4320. of

  4321. Virgil

  4322. so she's

  4323. trying to

  4324. piece

  4325. all these

  4326. things

  4327. together

  4328. and like

  4329. I said

  4330. this poem

  4331. actually

  4332. proved to

  4333. be

  4334. enormously

  4335. popular

  4336. in the

  4337. ancient

  4338. world

  4339. and it

  4340. was

  4341. kind

  4342. of a

  4343. way

  4344. that

  4345. Roman

  4346. Christians

  4347. could

  4348. appreciate

  4349. their

  4350. culture

  4351. but also

  4352. glorify

  4353. Christ

  4354. in the

  4355. same

  4356. way

  4357. unfortunately

  4358. as I've

  4359. mentioned

  4360. that's all

  4361. we know

  4362. about

  4363. Proba

  4364. we don't

  4365. know much

  4366. else about

  4367. her

  4368. other than

  4369. her

  4370. poem

  4371. I've

  4372. spoken of

  4373. poets

  4374. and martyrs

  4375. and other

  4376. people

  4377. I want

  4378. now though

  4379. to

  4380. move to

  4381. a woman

  4382. who is

  4383. most well

  4384. known as

  4385. being

  4386. a mother

  4387. and a

  4388. wife

  4389. and I

  4390. speak

  4391. about a

  4392. woman named

  4393. Monica

  4394. she was

  4395. the mother

  4396. of Augustine

  4397. of St.

  4398. Augustine

  4399. and this

  4400. is a

  4401. famous

  4402. picture

  4403. it shows

  4404. Monica

  4405. she's

  4406. probably

  4407. wouldn't have

  4408. been dressed

  4409. like this

  4410. in the

  4411. ancient

  4412. world

  4413. this is

  4414. sort of

  4415. a middle

  4416. age

  4417. idea

  4418. of what

  4419. she might

  4420. be like

  4421. Augustine's

  4422. not too

  4423. happy

  4424. here

  4425. because he

  4426. wasn't

  4427. for some

  4428. time

  4429. and we'll

  4430. get into

  4431. that in

  4432. a moment

  4433. but Monica

  4434. was born

  4435. in Algeria

  4436. in today

  4437. Africa

  4438. she was

  4439. probably

  4440. of Berber

  4441. descent

  4442. so she

  4443. was not

  4444. from

  4445. Latin

  4446. stock

  4447. or

  4448. from

  4449. Greek

  4450. stock

  4451. she also

  4452. may have

  4453. been

  4454. Phoenician

  4455. as well

  4456. and

  4457. we know

  4458. most about

  4459. her because

  4460. of what

  4461. Augustine

  4462. says about

  4463. her

  4464. and he

  4465. describes

  4466. when she

  4467. was a

  4468. child

  4469. she would

  4470. often be

  4471. called upon

  4472. to go down

  4473. to the

  4474. cellar

  4475. and to

  4476. bring up

  4477. some wine

  4478. for the

  4479. family

  4480. and she

  4481. would always

  4482. take a few

  4483. sips as

  4484. a child

  4485. now in

  4486. the ancient

  4487. world this

  4488. was normal

  4489. this was not

  4490. something that

  4491. would have

  4492. been particularly

  4493. frowned upon

  4494. unless there

  4495. was some

  4496. excess going

  4497. on but

  4498. the servant

  4499. who was

  4500. with her

  4501. shamed her

  4502. and mocked

  4503. her for doing

  4504. that and

  4505. called her a

  4506. drunkard and

  4507. Augustine

  4508. observes how

  4509. deeply this

  4510. affected

  4511. Monica and

  4512. that she

  4513. vowed to

  4514. live a life

  4515. of temperance

  4516. and purity

  4517. thereafter

  4518. and as she

  4519. grew which

  4520. she did

  4521. throughout her

  4522. life and

  4523. as she

  4524. grew and

  4525. became a

  4526. woman she

  4527. was betrothed

  4528. to a

  4529. pagan she

  4530. was from a

  4531. Christian family

  4532. she was raised

  4533. as a Christian

  4534. but she was

  4535. still betrothed

  4536. to a pagan

  4537. and this man

  4538. was violent

  4539. he was hot

  4540. tempered and

  4541. to make matters

  4542. worse his

  4543. mother so

  4544. Monica's mother

  4545. in law hated

  4546. Monica and

  4547. talk about a

  4548. difficult situation

  4549. for someone to

  4550. be in of

  4551. course in the

  4552. ancient world

  4553. there was no

  4554. there was no

  4555. such thing as

  4556. laws against

  4557. domestic violence

  4558. in fact Roman

  4559. men were

  4560. explicitly given

  4561. legal permission

  4562. to pretty much

  4563. do whatever they

  4564. wanted to

  4565. anybody they

  4566. wanted in the

  4567. house so

  4568. there was no

  4569. recourse if you

  4570. were married to

  4571. someone who

  4572. who was abusing

  4573. you

  4574. Monica however

  4575. decided to

  4576. despite these

  4577. challenges to

  4578. be wholeheartedly

  4579. devoted to her

  4580. husband and her

  4581. mother-in-law and

  4582. to wholeheartedly

  4583. submit to them

  4584. in everything

  4585. and Augustine

  4586. writes that

  4587. eventually he

  4588. won them both

  4589. she won them

  4590. both over that

  4591. her mother-in-law

  4592. grew to deeply

  4593. love Monica

  4594. and her husband

  4595. became a Christian

  4596. himself now this

  4597. this these two

  4598. little stories

  4599. illustrate her

  4600. character very much

  4601. because Monica

  4602. it turns out had

  4603. this amazing

  4604. gift of being

  4605. willing to

  4606. long suffer

  4607. with people

  4608. and also was

  4609. was very willing

  4610. to listen

  4611. and respond

  4612. to harsh

  4613. sometimes harsh

  4614. or difficult

  4615. advice

  4616. for instance as

  4617. this the

  4618. servant when the

  4619. servant rebuked her

  4620. for drinking wine

  4621. and we'll see this

  4622. come up again

  4623. when she gave

  4624. birth to

  4625. Augustine she

  4626. was 23 years

  4627. old and she

  4628. set about

  4629. educating Augustine

  4630. in the Christian

  4631. faith and raising

  4632. him as a Christian

  4633. as Augustine

  4634. grew older

  4635. though as a

  4636. teenager he

  4637. deeply grieved

  4638. his mother

  4639. by living a

  4640. licentious and

  4641. slothful life

  4642. his parents had

  4643. spent an enormous

  4644. sum on his

  4645. education and

  4646. he was kind of

  4647. throwing it away

  4648. and he was

  4649. sleeping around

  4650. and doing things

  4651. like that she

  4652. was deeply

  4653. grieved by

  4654. this to make

  4655. matters worse

  4656. though Augustine

  4657. left his

  4658. Christian faith

  4659. and converted

  4660. to Manichaeism

  4661. Manichaeism was

  4662. a religion that

  4663. started by a guy

  4664. named Manny

  4665. in Persia

  4666. around 250

  4667. AD so about

  4668. 100 years

  4669. before 120

  4670. years before

  4671. Augustine's

  4672. conversion to

  4673. Manichaeism

  4674. and Manny

  4675. claimed to be

  4676. a successor

  4677. to Jesus he

  4678. claimed to be

  4679. the paraclete

  4680. that Jesus

  4681. had promised

  4682. in the gospel

  4683. of John

  4684. whom we know

  4685. is the Holy

  4686. Spirit but he

  4687. claimed to be

  4688. that Manny

  4689. also claimed to

  4690. be the successor

  4691. to Buddha

  4692. but he was in

  4693. Persia so he

  4694. was bordering

  4695. Rome and

  4696. India at the

  4697. time so he

  4698. had access to

  4699. these various

  4700. traditions and

  4701. so Augustine

  4702. became a

  4703. Manichaean and

  4704. this deeply

  4705. wounded Monica

  4706. and she wept

  4707. much for him

  4708. she kicked him

  4709. out of the home

  4710. for his behavior

  4711. she sought

  4712. a priest

  4713. who had

  4714. once been

  4715. a Manichaean

  4716. himself and

  4717. she thought

  4718. this guy will

  4719. be able to

  4720. put reason

  4721. into Augustine

  4722. she went to

  4723. the priest

  4724. and begged

  4725. him that

  4726. he would

  4727. reason with

  4728. Augustine

  4729. and prove

  4730. his ideas

  4731. false

  4732. and the

  4733. priest talked

  4734. to Augustine

  4735. and came

  4736. back and

  4737. said to

  4738. Monica

  4739. that I

  4740. don't think

  4741. this is a

  4742. good thing

  4743. to do

  4744. that Augustine

  4745. is puffed

  4746. up with

  4747. arrogance

  4748. he's not

  4749. going to

  4750. listen to

  4751. anything

  4752. you just

  4753. need to

  4754. just be

  4755. at peace

  4756. with him

  4757. and just

  4758. love him

  4759. and she

  4760. continued

  4761. this you

  4762. know terrified

  4763. her she

  4764. continued

  4765. weeping

  4766. and wailing

  4767. Augustine

  4768. describes it

  4769. begging the

  4770. priest to

  4771. do something

  4772. until the

  4773. priest finally

  4774. said this

  4775. phrase

  4776. he said

  4777. the son

  4778. of such

  4779. tears

  4780. can never

  4781. be lost

  4782. and

  4783. Augustine

  4784. remarks

  4785. that

  4786. Monica

  4787. took this

  4788. as a

  4789. word from

  4790. God

  4791. himself

  4792. and obeyed

  4793. the priest

  4794. she settled

  4795. in her heart

  4796. to be at

  4797. peace with

  4798. Augustine

  4799. and she

  4800. welcomed him

  4801. back into

  4802. her home

  4803. and that

  4804. proves to be

  4805. exactly what

  4806. I think

  4807. Augustine

  4808. needed

  4809. so that he

  4810. wasn't driven

  4811. away from

  4812. his mother

  4813. and his

  4814. relationship

  4815. with her

  4816. though they

  4817. still had a

  4818. fairly rocky

  4819. relationship

  4820. Augustine at

  4821. this time

  4822. was starting

  4823. to become

  4824. immensely

  4825. accomplished

  4826. as an

  4827. orator

  4828. and he

  4829. actually obtained

  4830. perhaps the

  4831. most illustrious

  4832. position of

  4833. rhetoric in

  4834. the entire

  4835. Roman Empire

  4836. in Milan

  4837. in Italy

  4838. so he's

  4839. living in

  4840. Africa

  4841. so he

  4842. journeyed to

  4843. Italy

  4844. he did not

  4845. tell Monica

  4846. he was doing

  4847. this so he

  4848. abandoned her

  4849. she was worried

  4850. what would

  4851. happen to him

  4852. and you know

  4853. the high city

  4854. the big city

  4855. that there'd be

  4856. temptations and

  4857. things there

  4858. and he

  4859. left her

  4860. alone in

  4861. North Africa

  4862. and Augustine

  4863. writes this

  4864. he says

  4865. by this time

  4866. my mother

  4867. made strong

  4868. by her piety

  4869. had come to

  4870. me from

  4871. Africa

  4872. following me

  4873. over sea

  4874. and land

  4875. in all

  4876. perils

  4877. she still

  4878. felt secure

  4879. in thee

  4880. oh God

  4881. for in the

  4882. dangers of

  4883. the sea

  4884. she comforted

  4885. the very

  4886. sailors

  4887. on their

  4888. travel

  4889. assuring

  4890. them of

  4891. safe

  4892. arrival

  4893. because she

  4894. had been

  4895. so assured

  4896. by thee

  4897. oh God

  4898. she found

  4899. me in

  4900. grievous

  4901. danger

  4902. in despair

  4903. of ever

  4904. finding the

  4905. truth

  4906. what had

  4907. happened

  4908. was that

  4909. Augustine

  4910. had showed

  4911. up in

  4912. Milan

  4913. and he

  4914. had heard

  4915. about the

  4916. bishop of

  4917. Milan

  4918. Ambrose of

  4919. Milan

  4920. and heard

  4921. that he

  4922. wasn't

  4923. concerned

  4924. about

  4925. or interested

  4926. in

  4927. Ambrose

  4928. for his

  4929. Christianity

  4930. it was

  4931. because

  4932. he heard

  4933. that he

  4934. was this

  4935. amazing

  4936. speaker

  4937. and this

  4938. was Augustine's

  4939. job

  4940. so he

  4941. thought I

  4942. gotta listen

  4943. to this

  4944. guy

  4945. and he

  4946. showed up

  4947. and had

  4948. some

  4949. interaction

  4950. with Ambrose

  4951. and Ambrose

  4952. kind of

  4953. injected

  4954. some doubt

  4955. into Augustine

  4956. about

  4957. Manichaeism

  4958. and he

  4959. was deeply

  4960. troubled

  4961. and when

  4962. Monica

  4963. showed up

  4964. she found

  4965. that

  4966. Augustine

  4967. was no

  4968. longer

  4969. a Manichaean

  4970. but not

  4971. yet a

  4972. Christian

  4973. and

  4974. Augustine

  4975. says that

  4976. he was

  4977. really

  4978. surprised

  4979. because when

  4980. she found

  4981. out he

  4982. says quote

  4983. she did

  4984. not leap

  4985. for joy

  4986. he was

  4987. expecting her

  4988. to rejoice

  4989. at leaving

  4990. this faith

  4991. that she

  4992. did not

  4993. like

  4994. but she

  4995. didn't

  4996. instead

  4997. she told

  4998. Augustine

  4999. that God

  5000. had assured

  5001. her that

  5002. he would

  5003. become a

  5004. Christian

  5005. and that

  5006. this was

  5007. just part

  5008. of the

  5009. process

  5010. and that

  5011. she was

  5012. confident

  5013. it would

  5014. happen

  5015. he writes

  5016. that

  5017. quote

  5018. she hurried

  5019. all the

  5020. more assiduously

  5021. to the

  5022. church

  5023. and hung

  5024. upon

  5025. the words

  5026. of Ambrose

  5027. for she

  5028. loved

  5029. that man

  5030. as an

  5031. angel

  5032. of God

  5033. because she

  5034. knew that

  5035. it was by

  5036. him

  5037. that I

  5038. had been

  5039. brought

  5040. to my

  5041. present

  5042. condition

  5043. my

  5044. perplexing

  5045. state

  5046. of agitation

  5047. which I

  5048. was now

  5049. in

  5050. so

  5051. Augustine

  5052. writes one

  5053. more

  5054. thing I'll

  5055. share with

  5056. you

  5057. about his

  5058. mother

  5059. that helped

  5060. him on

  5061. his faith

  5062. journey

  5063. he says

  5064. that

  5065. as was

  5066. he says

  5067. my mother's

  5068. custom in

  5069. Africa

  5070. was to

  5071. bring to

  5072. the chapels

  5073. of the

  5074. saints

  5075. certain cakes

  5076. and bread

  5077. and wine

  5078. so what was

  5079. happening now

  5080. in the

  5081. 380s

  5082. was sort of

  5083. that saint

  5084. worship

  5085. relic worship

  5086. was starting to

  5087. creep into the

  5088. church

  5089. so Monica

  5090. would

  5091. would go to

  5092. some of

  5093. these chapels

  5094. that were

  5095. honoring

  5096. martyrs of

  5097. old

  5098. so we

  5099. someone like

  5100. Perpetua for

  5101. example

  5102. and she

  5103. would leave

  5104. I mean

  5105. effectively

  5106. offerings

  5107. like cake

  5108. and bread

  5109. and wine

  5110. and she

  5111. comes in

  5112. and this

  5113. was a

  5114. beloved

  5115. practice

  5116. of hers

  5117. and she

  5118. finds out

  5119. Augustine

  5120. says that

  5121. she was

  5122. forbidden to

  5123. do so

  5124. to leave

  5125. these kinds

  5126. of offerings

  5127. and it

  5128. upset her

  5129. very much

  5130. because she

  5131. loved doing

  5132. this

  5133. but quote

  5134. as soon

  5135. as she

  5136. learned

  5137. that it

  5138. was Bishop

  5139. Ambrose

  5140. who had

  5141. forbidden

  5142. it

  5143. she

  5144. piously

  5145. and

  5146. obediently

  5147. acceded

  5148. to it

  5149. and I

  5150. marveled

  5151. at how

  5152. readily

  5153. she could

  5154. bring herself

  5155. to accuse

  5156. her own

  5157. custom

  5158. rather than

  5159. question

  5160. Bishop

  5161. Ambrose

  5162. that

  5163. it shows

  5164. her this

  5165. I hope you

  5166. see this

  5167. willingness

  5168. in her

  5169. to take

  5170. harsh advice

  5171. sometimes

  5172. or difficult

  5173. advice

  5174. even if

  5175. lovingly

  5176. given

  5177. so she

  5178. stopped

  5179. that practice

  5180. and it

  5181. also speaks

  5182. well of

  5183. Ambrose

  5184. because you

  5185. didn't want

  5186. people doing

  5187. that

  5188. so by

  5189. long

  5190. suffering

  5191. and many

  5192. tears

  5193. as you

  5194. all know

  5195. Augustine

  5196. did eventually

  5197. become a

  5198. Christian

  5199. soon after

  5200. this

  5201. and

  5202. Augustine

  5203. would go

  5204. on to

  5205. use his

  5206. brilliant mind

  5207. to write

  5208. millions

  5209. of words

  5210. one scholar

  5211. has said

  5212. that he

  5213. wrote the

  5214. equivalent

  5215. of a

  5216. 300 page

  5217. book every

  5218. year for

  5219. 40 years

  5220. and

  5221. Augustine

  5222. himself

  5223. was so

  5224. impressed

  5225. by his

  5226. mother's

  5227. intelligence

  5228. that he

  5229. writes about

  5230. how he

  5231. would insist

  5232. that she

  5233. would join

  5234. them in

  5235. his theological

  5236. discussions

  5237. with his

  5238. friends

  5239. and how

  5240. she

  5241. participated

  5353. all

  5354. these

  5355. things

  5356. it's

  5357. sad

  5358. that

  5359. we

  5360. only

  5361. have

  5362. portions

  5363. of

  5364. her

  5365. journal

  5366. left

  5367. she

  5368. strikes

  5369. us

  5370. as

  5371. an

  5372. intrepid

  5373. traveler

  5374. and

  5375. she

  5376. describes

  5377. all

  5378. of

  5379. these

5380. sites. And the amazing thing is that many of these sites, people still go to Jerusalem to see today,

5381. or they go to Mount Sinai. So she describes going up Mount Sinai and what it's like there.

5382. And she describes being in Jerusalem and what the churches were like and what things looked like.

5383. It's an invaluable historical treasure for scholars to know what the Christian East was like.

5384. She also passed into Mesopotamia, into Edessa, which is a famous Christian city. Sometimes it

5385. was in Rome. Sometimes it was in the Persian Empire. It was one of those cities that kind of went back

5386. and forth. And she passed in there and wrote about all her journeys and also in Constantinople. And

5387. she has these beautiful phrases where she's writing. She's writing this journal and then

5388. sending it as a letter to her friends back home. And she keeps addressing her friends as,

5389. dear beloved sisters, dear sisters, dear sisters, you'll never believe what I saw today. And

5390. writes all this. It's a wonderful little journal. The last woman I want to share with you all is a

5391. hymnographer, Cassia. We're now advancing well into the medieval church, actually. Cassia was Greek.

5392. She was born in Constantinople into a wealthy family. Around 805-810 is when she was born. And she was said to be

5393. exceptionally beautiful and intelligent and so beautiful, in fact, that when the young emperor

5394. was wanting to be married, he decided to have a party where he would invite all the most eligible

5395. noble ladies to come, who were the prettiest, and take his pick. And Cassia was there. And the young

5396. emperor approached her. And there's this famous phrase where, you know, the emperor is haughty. This is

5397. not how you should try to woo a woman, I don't think. But he's very haughty, and he wants to

5398. seem superior to everybody. So he just goes up to her, and he says, through a woman came forth

5399. the baser things. And he's referring to Eve and how she sinned. And he's trying to put Cassia in her

5400. place. And Cassia was said to immediately retort, and through a woman came the better things,

5401. referring to Mary bringing forth Jesus. And the emperor was embarrassed and decided not to marry

5402. her. And that was probably good for Cassia. She went on to become a nun and never married.

5403. But she wrote many hymns. And these are kind of in two groups, as I understand it. Some of them are

5404. just kind of pithy sayings, like proverbial advice. It's things that you would read in the Proverbs.

5405. So she has, this is what she says about beauty. She says, one should prefer a drop of luck than great

5406. beauty. It is better to possess grace from the Lord than beauty and wealth, which does not gain grace.

5407. Or she has this on friendship. A friendship that is not founded on loving Christ.

5408. Harmony is not possible for it, but rather strife. Give freely of friendship to a loving friend.

5409. But to an ungrateful one, friendship is vain. A little is the most if the friend is grateful.

5410. But to the ungrateful, the most is the least. She has lots of sayings like this. I will share her

5411. most famous hymn with you. It's called The Hymn of the Fallen Woman. And it's about the woman who came

5412. to anoint Jesus before his burial and was washing his feet with her hair and mourning over her sins.

5413. And she says this, Lord, the woman fallen into many sins, recognizing your divinity rises to the

5414. status of myrrh bearer. So she's bearing myrrh to anoint Jesus. And with mourning, she brings to you

5415. myrrh before your burial. Woe to me, she says, for night holds for me the ecstasy of intemperance,

5416. gloomy and moonless, a desire for sin. Accept the springs of my tears. You who with clouds spread out

5417. the water of the sea, bend down to me, to the lamentations of my heart. You who made the heavens

5418. incline by your ineffable humiliation. I will tenderly kiss your sacred feet. I will wipe them

5419. again with the hair of my head. The feet who sound eve heard in paradise in the afternoon and hid in fear.

5420. Who can describe the multitude of my sins and the depths of your judgment? My redeemer,

5421. savior of souls. Do not disregard me, your servant. You whose mercy is infinite.

5422. I love how she describes this woman wiping Jesus's feet with her hair and remembers in the book of

5423. Genesis when it says that Adam and Eve heard the sound of the Lord walking in the cool of the day and

5424. hid from him because they have feared judgment. But here we have this woman coming to his feet and

5425. clinging to him. Well, I hope that these little vignettes have given you an appreciation for some

5426. early Christian women. We've spoken of disciples of Jesus, especially in the Gospel of Luke, Mary and

5427. Martha, Mary Magdalene, Anna, Elizabeth, Mary the mother of Jesus, Peter's wife, and perhaps the wife of

5428. Cleopas. And after them, there were the martyrs, Blandina and Perpetua and Felicity. And we also

5429. turned to the Empress Mamea, the slave Nino, the apostle of the Georgians, the poet Proba, the loving

5430. mother Monica, and the traveler Agiria and Cassia, the hymnographer. I hope these women have encouraged

5431. you in your walk of faith. We have a few more minutes if you guys want to ask questions, but I've kind of

5432. gone over a bit in time so we can close two if that would be more appropriate.
