  1. Good morning.

  2. We open us up in a word of prayer, and then we'll begin.

  3. Our Father in Heaven, O Lord, as we read your word today,

  4. Lord, give us eyes to see and ears to hear.

  5. Incline our hearts to your testimonies.

  6. Revive us again as we look to your word.

  7. Open our eyes, open our minds to see wondrous things in your word, Lord.

  8. For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

  9. For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

  10. Familiar words.

  11. So Jesus taught us to pray.

  12. And Jesus taught us to live by first seeking that kingdom before anything else.

  13. Jesus told Herod, my kingdom is not of this world.

  14. We know a lot about this kingdom.

  15. The New Testament says a lot about this kingdom.

  16. And God's kingdom isn't just one of the many themes running through the Bible.

  17. Therefore, the kingdom lies just beneath the surface of almost every passage in every book in the Bible.

  18. So as a church, right now, we're going through the book of Philippians.

  19. And what does Paul tell the church at Philippi?

  20. He says, you are a citizen of God's kingdom.

  21. Your allegiance lies into God's kingdom, not Rome, to God's.

  22. So the thread of the kingdom can be seen from Adam to Abraham.

  23. From Abraham to Moses.

  24. Moses to David through the Psalms.

  25. To Isaiah.

  26. To Nehemiah.

  27. And eventually to Jesus, his church.

  28. And eventually to the point where Christ reigns with his people forever and ever.

  29. In the new heavens and the new earth.

  30. That thread of the kingdom runs straight through from the narrative from Genesis to Revelation.

  31. And as we said last week, it is both true that the Bible has one author and multiple authors at the same time.

  32. Since there is only one author, the divine author,

  33. the Bible has a single coherent plot line that is centered on Christ, as we discussed.

  34. So a caveat, I don't mean to say the kingdom of God is the center of all biblical theology.

  35. I only mean that the kingdom is going to be the means by which the story will advance from Genesis to Revelation.

  36. And by the end of this series, my hope is, as we look at a lot of the themes in the Bible

  37. and how they run through the thread, the narrative,

  38. that you can drop into any point within the scriptures and know where you are in the storyline.

  39. So that's my hope and my prayer.

  40. So to understand the kingdom, before we get started,

  41. and we talked about the systematic versus biblical theology last week,

  42. to understand the kingdom, we have to understand the idea of a covenant.

  43. The Bible uses the term covenant throughout the Bible.

  44. What is a covenant?

  45. So this class is called The Kingdom Through the Covenant.

  46. And by the way, there's a great book about this, if you're interested in learning more,

  47. by authors Stephen Wellam and Peter Gentry.

  48. Their book is called The Kingdom Through the Covenant.

  49. So it's a fantastic book.

  50. So what is a covenant exactly, and how does it relate to the kingdom?

  51. So today, we typically think of covenants as dry, legal relationships.

  52. So if you have a mortgage, you may have covenanted with the bank to make those payments on time.

  53. First of the month.

  54. You've entered into a covenant.

  55. But in the Bible, covenants are different.

  56. They're different.

  57. They are bonds of life and death out of love.

  58. So the word lovenant would be a great word to describe this kind of relationship in the English language.

  59. But alas, we're stuck with the word covenant.

  60. So covenants are bonds of life and death.

  61. And that's the idea of a covenant the Bible presents to us.

  62. And when I say the theme of the kingdom of God,

  63. what do I mean when I say kingdom of God?

  64. So eight words to define the kingdom of God.

  65. God's people and God's place under God's rule.

  66. That's how Graham Goldworthy described the kingdom of God.

  67. The kingdom is the place where God as king rules over his people.

  68. And so by tracing, as Stephen, Wellam, and Gentry know,

  69. the covenant is the entire backbone of the entire storyline of the scripture.

  70. So it's important we get our arms around this idea of covenant and kingdom.

  71. So in fact, many Christians across the centuries have made the idea of a covenant

  72. the organizing principle by which the Bible is cemented together.

  73. So we say the Bible has two testaments, right?

  74. The Old Testament and the New Testament.

  75. But that can easily be translated as the old covenant of God's kingdom

  76. and the new covenant of God's kingdom.

  77. And so by tracing that trajectory from its conception to its consummation

  78. in the new heavens and new earth,

  79. we'll begin to see how the Bible really is one grand story centered on Christ.

  80. And so I hope this class helps us to read our Bibles better,

  81. but also for us to reflect on the majesty and beauty of the biblical message.

  82. So let's jump right in.

  83. Turn to Genesis 1.1.

  84. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  85. Verse 3,

  86. And God said,

  87. Let there be light.

  88. And there was light.

  89. Ten times in this opening chapter of Genesis 1,

  90. we read,

  91. And God said,

  92. and it was so.

  93. So we see God speaks as a king.

  94. And his lordship is on full display.

  95. The king and the author of creation

  96. has authority over his creation.

  97. And so while it is true that God alone is the ultimate king,

  98. God portrays Adam,

  99. the first person bearing his image,

  100. as a king.

  101. Look at verse 26.

  102. This is the pattern of the kingdom of God.

  103. Then God said,

  104. Let us make man in our image,

  105. after our likeness,

  106. and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,

  107. and over the birds of the heavens,

  108. and over the livestock,

  109. and over all the earth,

  110. and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  111. So God created man in his own image.

  112. In the image of God,

  113. he created him.

  114. Male and female,

  115. he created them.

  116. So kingship to Adam

  117. is at the heart of the commission

  118. that God gives to Adam and Eve.

  119. They are granted dominion

  120. over animal life on the earth.

  121. So the language of being given dominion

  122. means God has appointed humans

  123. as his vice regents.

  124. Vice regents.

  125. So just like the vice president

  126. acts on behalf of the president,

  127. Adam and Eve act as the vice regents

  128. on behalf of the king in creation.

  129. And in the creation mandate,

  130. in verse 28,

  131. Adam and Eve were to be fruitful

  132. and multiply and fill the earth

  133. and thus spread God's own dominion

  134. outside the boundaries of the Garden of Eden

  135. so that it reached the furthest points of creation.

  136. God reigned over his creation

  137. in and through the partnership

  138. of Adam and Eve together.

  139. So the kingdom of God

  140. in the garden would spread.

  141. And later in the Bible,

  142. God even calls Adam a son.

  143. So he's royalty.

  144. Right?

  145. Luke 3 tells us that.

  146. And so,

  147. think about the dignity

  148. of all people created

  149. in the image of God here.

  150. The Imago Dei.

  151. And this is scandalous, friends.

  152. When Moses wrote this,

  153. only Pharaoh would ever claim

  154. to be made in the image of king.

  155. Right?

  156. So imagine how the Israelites

  157. would have felt

  158. after years of being slaves in Egypt

  159. that they too were created

  160. in the image of the creator God.

  161. So friends,

  162. Adam and Eve

  163. had an exalted position in creation

  164. as all human beings do.

  165. Right?

  166. And the Garden of Eden

  167. where God places them

  168. is significant.

  169. The garden is portrayed

  170. as a microcosm

  171. of the blessing God intended

  172. for the whole earth.

  173. So Eden,

  174. we can say,

  175. is the center

  176. for the world's blessing

  177. reflected in the depiction

  178. of four rivers

  179. flowing from the garden

  180. in chapters 2,

  181. verses 10 to 14.

  182. So in that blessing

  183. would extend

  184. the ends of the earth

  185. as Adam and Eve

  186. were fruitful

  187. and multiplied

  188. and populated the earth

  189. with image bearers.

  190. So the kingdom of God

  191. would bring blessing.

  192. So this is paradise.

  193. This is God's kingdom.

  194. And then disaster strikes.

  195. Right?

  196. In Genesis 3.

  197. A disaster strikes.

  198. Adam and Eve

  199. reject God's rule

  200. through that serpent's deception.

  201. The first great conflict

  202. in the story

  203. emerges at this point.

  204. Has the kingdom perished?

  205. Has the kingdom perished?

  206. Sin jeopardized

  207. God's divine plan

  208. to bless the world,

  209. but was it eradicated

  210. by human rebellion?

  211. So in the first few chapters,

  212. we see that

  213. although sin had entered

  214. the world through Adam,

  215. God's sovereign plan

  216. was not abandoned.

  217. So surprisingly,

  218. I think the reader

  219. would be surprised

  220. at this point,

  221. and very unexpectedly,

  222. the plot thickens.

  223. The plot thickens.

  224. Genesis 3.15

  225. is that first musical note

  226. of God's redemptive intention

  227. in this grand symphony

  228. of the Bible.

  229. Following the fall,

  230. God says this,

  231. I will put enmity

  232. between you and the woman

  233. and between your offspring

  234. and her offspring.

  235. He shall bruise your head

  236. and you shall bruise his heel.

  237. Sometimes called

  238. the proto-evangelion.

  239. Proto-first evangelion

  240. is the gospel.

  241. The first gospel promise

  242. in the Bible.

  243. God did not destroy them,

  244. but he promised a savior.

  245. Surprising.

  246. So the author here

  247. is foreshadowing a solution

  248. to solve the problem

  249. of sin.

  250. To solve the problem

  251. of this conflict

  252. by providing a savior.

  253. God is going to rebuild

  254. his kingdom

  255. that had been destroyed

  256. by sin

  257. through this offspring

  258. promised to Adam and Eve.

  259. God will do something

  260. in the history of Israel

  261. that has its genesis

  262. in this promise

  263. given in Eden.

  264. So Adam's temptation

  265. in the garden

  266. should make us think

  267. of temptation

  268. in another garden.

  269. Jesus in the garden

  270. of Gethsemane.

  271. Both Adam and Jesus

  272. faced temptation,

  273. but only one was faithful.

  274. The original Adam

  275. wilted under temptation

  276. of eating the forbidden fruit.

  277. But in another garden,

  278. Jesus,

  279. the last Adam,

  280. overcame temptation.

  281. Adam's choice

  282. to sin

  283. by rejecting God

  284. had the potential

  285. of bringing condemnation

  286. and death

  287. to everyone.

  288. But in the garden

  289. of Gethsemane,

  290. Christ's decision

  291. to die for sins

  292. brought life.

  293. Adam disobeyed

  294. God's will

  295. by eating of the tree,

  296. whereas Jesus submitted

  297. to the Father's will

  298. by going to the cross

  299. and being nailed

  300. to a tree.

  301. So in biblical theology,

  302. as we discussed

  303. last week,

  304. this is known

  305. as typology.

  306. Typology.

  307. Adam is the type.

  308. Christ is the antitype,

  309. the fulfillment.

  310. So are we being clever

  311. in making this comparison?

  312. No, rather,

  313. Paul makes his connection

  314. for us

  315. in Romans 5,

    Romans 5:14

  316. verse 14.

  317. He uses the word type

  318. to describe Adam

  319. and the one

  320. who is to come,

  321. Christ.

  322. So Paul is comparing

  323. the two for us,

  324. but he's also knowing

  325. the differences

  326. between Adam and Christ.

  327. So in reading

  328. the Bible canonically,

  329. we can say the scene

  330. in the garden

  331. in Genesis

  332. is anticipating Christ.

  333. That's biblical theology.

  334. According to Paul,

  335. Christ is the second Adam.

  336. So just a sidebar

  337. conference here.

  338. There's a question

  339. that many have

  340. about whether God

  341. made a conditional

  342. covenant with Adam.

  343. was there a covenant

  344. with Adam in the garden?

  345. And I would say,

  346. I think there's good reason

  347. to believe

  348. there is a covenant,

  349. but people differ on this.

  350. So the argument

  351. for why there is a covenant

  352. pretty much is,

  353. look,

  354. if it quacks like a duck

  355. and it smells like a duck,

  356. it looks like a duck,

  357. well,

  358. it's probably a duck then.

  359. So people say

  360. there's a covenant

  361. with Adam

  362. because there are

  363. binding promises

  364. between two parties.

  365. God would establish

  366. Adam and Eve

  367. in the garden

  368. if they obeyed the Lord.

  369. But they would be cursed

  370. if they transgressed

  371. the command

  372. to not eat

  373. of the tree

  374. of the life

  375. of good and evil.

  376. So there are covenant blessings

  377. and covenant curses.

  378. So the account

  379. has all the elements

  380. of a covenant

  381. except officially

  382. calling it one.

  383. So one more reason

  384. that people think

  385. there's a covenant here

  386. is the prophets

  387. sometimes are called

  388. the covenant prosecutors.

  389. So like a prosecutor

  390. in a courtroom,

  391. the prophets lay out

  392. a case of why

  393. Israel has failed

  394. to keep its commitments

  395. in the covenant.

  396. And Hosea does this

  397. and compares Israel

  398. to Adam

  399. in transgressing

  400. its covenant

  401. to the Lord.

  402. So however,

  403. people find

  404. the reason why people

  405. don't think

  406. there's a covenant here

  407. is because nowhere

  408. in Genesis

  409. is the word covenant used.

  410. And there's no covenant

  411. ceremony

  412. which is a weakness.

  413. You'd expect to see

  414. a covenant ceremony here.

  415. But there's not.

  416. So why does it even matter

  417. why am I bringing this up?

  418. Because,

  419. and this is using

  420. the tool of continuity,

  421. it helps us to understand

  422. our redemption.

  423. Theologians will say

  424. the covenant with Adam,

  425. they will call it

  426. the covenant of works,

  427. puts Christ's active obedience

  428. into perspective.

  429. His active obedience.

  430. So,

  431. Paul makes clear

  432. in Romans 5,

  433. both Adam and Christ

  434. stand in covenant relation

  435. to humanity.

  436. Right?

  437. We are either in Adam

  438. or in Christ.

  439. And when Christ comes

  440. as a second Adam,

  441. Christ is keeping the covenant

  442. that Adam failed to keep.

  443. So in that respect,

  444. Christ is the covenant keeper

  445. for a new humanity.

  446. And God means to always

  447. relate to his people

  448. through their obedience.

  449. Right?

  450. But we know even in paradise,

  451. human beings in ourselves

  452. are unable to maintain

  453. that perfect obedience

  454. that God requires.

  455. Even in paradise,

  456. we can't obey.

  457. And God's good law

  458. commands us,

  459. but we're unable

  460. to obey it ourselves.

  461. So Christ did this perfectly

  462. on our behalf.

  463. He fulfilled the covenant

  464. of works,

  465. theologians will say.

  466. However,

  467. if you're a dispensationalist,

  468. you see these in a different way.

  469. So a dispensationalist

  470. sees a lot of discontinuity

  471. like we talked about last week.

  472. And so biblical history

  473. is thus divided

  474. into dispensations.

  475. And they would say

  476. that in Adam,

  477. it's a dispensation of,

  478. usually it's called innocence.

  479. And that was very short-lived

  480. because Adam and Eve

  481. failed pretty quickly.

  482. So getting back

  483. to the story in Genesis.

  484. Adam and Eve fell.

  485. And as the story unfolds,

  486. unfolds,

  487. the horrific consequences

  488. of Adam and Eve's sin

  489. become evident very quickly.

  490. So Genesis 6, verse 5,

    Genesis 6:5

  491. the Lord saw

  492. that the wickedness of man

  493. was great in the earth

  494. and that every intention

  495. of the thoughts of his heart

  496. was only evil continually.

  497. So by the time of Noah,

  498. there were only eight righteous people

  499. in the entire world.

  500. Only eight.

  501. So if you think about

  502. living in today's day

  503. and age is bad,

  504. friends,

  505. think about how bad

  506. it got in Noah's day.

  507. There were only eight people

  508. in the entire world

  509. that followed God.

  510. There were more than

  511. eight people in this room.

  512. Praise the Lord.

  513. And of course,

  514. we have the Holy Spirit.

  515. But God is not taken

  516. by surprise,

  517. friends,

  518. by an entire culture

  519. and even an entire world

  520. that reject him.

  521. So I'm thinking about

  522. Noah's day.

  523. It must have been hard.

  524. I mean,

  525. your only family

  526. is the only people

  527. that follow Christ

  528. or follow God as king.

  529. So in Noah's day,

  530. the promise

  531. of redemption

  532. of the offspring

  533. of the woman

  534. was a distant memory.

  535. Barely remembered.

  536. A dream within a dream.

  537. But God would not

  538. wipe out everyone.

  539. Why?

  540. Because the promise

  541. God made in Genesis 3.

  542. Right?

  543. Noah is in the line

  544. of the promised offspring

  545. of Eve.

  546. The human race

  547. would not again

  548. be annihilated

  549. until the plan

  550. of redemption

  551. through the offspring

  552. of the woman

  553. was fulfilled.

  554. And God promises this

  555. in the Noahic covenant

  556. in Genesis 9, verse 8.

    Genesis 9:8

  557. Then God said to Noah

  558. and to his sons

  559. with him,

  560. I now establish

  561. my covenant with you

  562. and with all your

  563. descendants after you.

  564. I will establish

  565. my covenant with you.

  566. Never again

  567. will all life

  568. be destroyed

  569. by the waters

  570. of a flood.

  571. Never again

  572. will there be a flood

  573. to destroy the earth.

  574. I have set my rainbow

  575. in the clouds

  576. and it will be the sign

  577. of the covenant

  578. between me and the earth.

  579. So covenants

  580. always have a sign.

  581. This one is the rainbow.

  582. God's bow of war

  583. set down.

  584. So the Hebrew

  585. root for rainbow

  586. and bow as an archery

  587. are the same word.

  588. So when you see

  589. the rainbow,

  590. it's a reminder

  591. that God

  592. will withhold

  593. his judgment.

  594. So this covenant

  595. is not directly tied up

  596. to God's plan

  597. of redemption

  598. in Genesis 3.

  599. However,

  600. it did preserve

  601. the created order

  602. long enough

  603. for that plan

  604. of redemption

  605. to come to pass.

  606. It also shows,

  607. I think,

  608. God is committed

  609. to his creation

  610. and anticipating

  611. the new heavens

  612. and the new earth

  613. where God will

  614. eventually restore

  615. his creation.

  616. But even after

  617. the flood,

  618. the fundamental

  619. problem with human

  620. beings was not solved.

  621. The Tower of Babel

  622. illustrates that

  623. the human heart

  624. had not changed at all.

  625. In Genesis 3-11,

  626. it is like

  627. William Golding's

  628. Lord of the Flies.

  629. Left to us,

  630. human beings

  631. would devolve

  632. into savagery

  633. and evil.

  634. So the only hope

  635. at this point

  636. for redemption

  637. must come from

  638. God himself.

  639. God must carry out

  640. a rescue plan.

  641. Indeed,

  642. God does this

  643. by choosing

  644. one man,

  645. Abraham,

  646. as the one

  647. through whom

  648. the promise

  649. of Genesis 3-15

  650. would become

  651. a reality.

  652. So the covenant

  653. of Abraham

  654. is fulfilling

  655. the promise

  656. of Genesis 3.

  657. So in a sense,

  658. Abraham would be

  659. a new Adam.

  660. And Abraham

  661. would be a new Adam

  662. and Canaan

  663. would be a new Eden

  664. where God would dwell

  665. with his people

  666. once again.

  667. In Genesis 12,

  668. God promised

  669. Abraham three things

  670. in the Abrahamic covenant.

  671. Numerous offspring,

  672. land,

  673. and that he would be

  674. the source of blessing

  675. to all nations

  676. through one

  677. of his descendants.

  678. So Abraham

  679. is faltering

  680. about God's promise

  681. of an offspring

  682. since he's in his 70s.

  683. That's an old age

  684. to have children.

  685. And God showed him

  686. the stars

  687. and told him

  688. his offspring

  689. would be as numerous

  690. as the stars.

  691. And so God

  692. kind of gives

  693. Abraham

  694. the Rafiki treatment.

  695. Like,

  696. hey,

  697. Simba,

  698. look at the stars here.

  699. Like,

  700. your offspring

  701. was numerous

  702. as the stars.

  703. And as Romans 4 says,

  704. it's in that moment

  705. Abraham believed God

  706. and God

  707. would provide an heir

  708. and it was accounted

  709. to him

  710. as righteousness.

  711. So Genesis 15,

  712. 6,

  713. a very famous verse.

  714. And he believed

  715. the Lord

  716. and he counted it

  717. to him

  718. as righteousness.

  719. So here,

  720. Abraham is believing

  721. a promise.

  722. The Lord

  723. counts him,

  724. reckons him,

  725. as a righteous man.

  726. So righteousness

  727. means walking

  728. before God,

  729. loving him,

  730. and obeying him.

  731. So a theological

  732. word here is

  733. this is an imputation

  734. of righteousness

  735. to Abraham.

  736. This is an alien

  737. righteousness

  738. coming to Abraham.

  739. To use a biblical

  740. metaphor,

  741. Isaiah will say

  742. this is a white robe

  743. that clothes us.

  744. Abraham in himself

  745. is not a righteous man.

  746. So the very next chapter,

  747. I think it's significant

  748. in the narrative,

  749. Abraham commits

  750. a heinous sin

  751. with Hagar.

  752. So Abraham

  753. is a polygamist.

  754. And who's the only

  755. other polygamist

  756. to this point

  757. in Genesis?

  758. A man called Lamech.

  759. It's not a good company

  760. to be in.

  761. You don't want to be

  762. compared to Lamech.

  763. But Abraham,

  764. after he's accounted

  765. as righteous,

  766. he commits

  767. a heinous sin.

  768. So Moses here

  769. is not whitewashing

  770. the heroes

  771. of the Jewish faith.

  772. Faith was the key.

  773. God accounted Abraham

  774. as a righteous man.

  775. It wasn't his ethnicity

  776. or any kind of works

  777. done by Abraham.

  778. Abraham was justified

  779. by faith.

  780. That's what Paul tells us.

  781. And the kingdom

  782. that God is starting

  783. through Abraham,

  784. seed,

  785. will be those

  786. who are justified

  787. by faith.

  788. Right?

  789. In Genesis 15,

  790. there's this curious

  791. ceremony that happens

  792. that takes place

  793. to seal this solemn covenant

  794. between God and Abraham,

  795. which highlights

  796. the unconditional aspects

  797. of this covenant

  798. for us.

  799. So covenants

  800. in the ancient Near East

  801. were sometimes ratified

  802. through a ceremony

  803. in which animals

  804. were cut up

  805. and the pieces

  806. arranged on the ground.

  807. And that's what's

  808. happening in Genesis 15.

  809. The two parties

  810. would walk

  811. between the pieces

  812. stating that a similar fate

  813. should befall them

  814. if either party

  815. broke the agreement.

  816. They would be torn apart

  817. like those animals

  818. on the ground.

  819. But something very interesting

  820. happens in Genesis 15.

  821. Something very unexpected

  822. happens in the ceremony.

  823. God puts Abraham

  824. to sleep.

  825. And it was only God

  826. who walked

  827. between the animal pieces

  828. in the figures

  829. of a smoking fire pot

  830. and a flaming torch

  831. in Abraham's place.

  832. Very strange.

  833. God is saying,

  834. I will keep my end

  835. of the deal.

  836. And Abraham,

  837. if you fail on your side,

  838. God is saying,

  839. I will take on myself

  840. the curse

  841. of breaking the covenant.

  842. So God has sole responsibility

  843. for keeping the covenant

  844. by providing offspring.

  845. It's unconditional.

  846. I am going to do it.

  847. And the sign of this covenant

  848. was circumcision,

  849. showing that God's people,

  850. the Israelites,

  851. had a special place

  852. in God's redemptive plan.

  853. However,

  854. one question

  855. that people typically have

  856. about the Abrahamic covenant

  857. is whether

  858. this is a conditional

  859. or unconditional covenant

  860. and how do we think

  861. about those aspects

  862. in Genesis.

  863. So,

  864. I would say

  865. the covenant with Abraham

  866. has both conditional

  867. and unconditional elements.

  868. So we see in Genesis 17,

    Genesis 17:1

  869. verse 1,

  870. God commands Abraham

  871. to walk before him

  872. faithfully

  873. and be blameless.

  874. So in that sense,

  875. it's conditional.

  876. The people,

  877. Abraham's descendants,

  878. would not experience

  879. the covenant blessings

  880. of the Abrahamic covenant

  881. if they are not faithful.

  882. However,

  883. so in this respect,

  884. Abraham himself

  885. was even called

  886. to walk by faith

  887. before God.

  888. But in another sense,

  889. though,

  890. God is committing

  891. to meet all the conditions

  892. of the covenant.

  893. So in that sense,

  894. it is unconditional.

  895. So it's both conditional

  896. and unconditional.

  897. Some people think

  898. it's only unconditional.

  899. Fine.

  900. A lot of people believe that.

  901. But I think there's both,

  902. I think there's both elements here.

  903. By the end of Genesis,

  904. these promises to Abraham

  905. of numerous offspring,

  906. land,

  907. or international blessing

  908. have scarcely been advanced at all.

  909. So by the end of Genesis,

  910. Israel was not in Canaan,

  911. but in Egypt.

  912. And obviously,

  913. the whole world

  914. was not being renewed

  915. through Abraham's family.

  916. So clearly,

  917. like Hebrews 11 says,

  918. the patriarchs

  919. lived by faith

  920. that the Lord

  921. would fulfill his promises

  922. in the future.

  923. So by the end of the book,

  924. the entire family of Abraham

  925. is limited to about 70 people.

  926. So how does

  927. the Abrahamic covenant

  928. relate to the promise

  929. that God made

  930. to Adam and Eve?

  931. the Abrahamic covenant

  932. is fulfilling the promise

  933. of offspring

  934. in Genesis 3.15.

  935. The promised offspring

  936. of Eve

  937. would come

  938. through Abraham's line.

  939. So the story is unfolding.

  940. That promised Savior

  941. will now be a descendant

  942. of Abraham.

  943. And as the Bible continues,

  944. we see how committed

  945. God is to keeping

  946. those promises.

  947. So the promise

  948. of Abraham's family

  949. was like the stars

  950. of heaven

  951. began to be fulfilled

  952. in Exodus.

  953. So we read in Exodus 1.7,

  954. but the people of Israel

  955. were fruitful

  956. and increased greatly.

  957. They multiplied

  958. and grew exceedingly strong

  959. so that the land

  960. was filled with them.

  961. But they were suffering

  962. miserably under Egyptian rule

  963. and cried out

  964. for deliverance.

  965. So would Pharaoh

  966. ultimately frustrate

  967. the Lord's plan?

  968. Exodus 2.23-25

  969. During those many days,

  970. the king of Egypt died

  971. and the people of Israel

  972. groaned because of their slavery

  973. and cried out for help.

  974. Their cry for rescue

  975. from slavery

  976. came up to God

  977. and God heard their groaning

  978. and God remembered

  979. his covenant with Abraham,

  980. with Isaac,

  981. with Jacob.

  982. God saw the people of Israel

  983. and God knew.

  984. The Lord remembered

  985. his covenant promise.

  986. But what will God do?

  987. God showed his unfailing love

  988. for his people

  989. in the Exodus

  990. by rescuing them

  991. from slavery.

  992. So the entire book of Exodus

  993. is building off

  994. the book of Genesis.

  995. The story is unfolding.

  996. God brought them

  997. through the Exodus

  998. to the foot of Mount Sinai

  999. and made another major covenant

  1000. with them there,

  1001. promising to take them

  1002. as his treasured possession

  1003. and dwell among them

  1004. as their God

  1005. if,

1006. if they would obey him.

  1007. So this is called

  1008. the Mosaic Covenant.

1009. This is the Mosaic Covenant.

  1010. Here's what Exodus 19

    Exodus 19:5

  1011. verses 5 and 6 say.

  1012. Now therefore,

1013. if you will indeed obey my voice

  1014. and keep my covenant,

1015. you shall be to me

  1016. a treasured possession

  1017. among all peoples

1018. for all the earth is mine

1019. and you shall be to me

  1020. a kingdom of priests

  1021. and a holy nation.

  1022. Israel would be

  1023. a kingdom of priests

1024. who would mediate God's blessing

1025. to the rest of the earth

1026. just like Adam and Eve

1027. were meant to in the garden.

1028. They would be the new Adams

1029. in the land of Canaan.

  1030. God's new humanity.

  1031. In order to mediate

  1032. the blessing,

  1033. Israel must model

  1034. the kingdom of God

  1035. by living according

  1036. to the Mosaic Law.

  1037. Right?

  1038. So God gave Israel

  1039. a law code

1040. summarized in the Ten Commandments.

  1041. And the Sabbath

  1042. was a covenant sign

1043. that they were set apart

  1044. to bless the nations.

1045. They were meant to be

  1046. a holy nation.

  1047. So would Israel

  1048. be a truly righteous

  1049. kingdom of priests

  1050. that blessed the world?

  1051. We'll find out.

  1052. So how does

  1053. the Mosaic Covenant

  1054. relate to

  1055. the Abrahamic Covenant?

  1056. The Mosaic Covenant

  1057. is implementing

  1058. the Abrahamic Covenant.

  1059. The story is unfolding.

  1060. The Abrahamic Covenant

  1061. fulfilled that promise

1062. given to Adam and Eve

1063. and now the Mosaic Covenant

  1064. is implementing it.

  1065. So God promised

  1066. a kingdom to Abraham

  1067. and now Israel

1068. be that kingdom of priests

1069. in the land of Canaan

  1070. mediating God's blessing

  1071. to the earth

  1072. like God had planned

  1073. for Adam and Eve

  1074. in the garden.

  1075. So the Mosaic Covenant

  1076. would be

  1077. the most conditional

  1078. of all the covenants

  1079. that we'll see

  1080. with extensive promises

  1081. of blessing

  1082. for obedience

  1083. and curses

  1084. for disobedience.

  1085. The worst being

  1086. ultimate exile

  1087. in the land.

  1088. So you should notice

  1089. there's a real tension

  1090. in the progression

  1091. of these biblical covenants.

  1092. There are unconditional

  1093. and unilateral promises

  1094. that God of grace

1095. that God will do something

  1096. but there are real

  1097. two-sided conditions

  1098. that the people

  1099. must meet

  1100. in the Mosaic Covenant.

  1101. So there's a real tension

  1102. in the narrative

  1103. that's developing

  1104. at this point.

  1105. But the real drama

  1106. in Exodus

  1107. is how are these

  1108. sinful people

  1109. going to dwell

  1110. with the Holy God

  1111. who cannot tolerate sin?

  1112. And Exodus makes

  1113. that point.

  1114. Figuratively speaking

  1115. the Mosaic Covenant

  1116. was broken

  1117. before the ink

  1118. was even dry

  1119. in the covenant document.

  1120. The people violated

  1121. the covenant

  1122. by doing what?

  1123. Making and worshipping

  1124. a golden calf.

  1125. And Moses intercedes

  1126. for Israel

  1127. and they were forgiven

  1128. but the question's raised

  1129. how is Yahweh

  1130. going to dwell

  1131. with the stubborn people?

  1132. The people were

  1133. delivered from Egypt

1134. but were they really changed

  1135. on the inside

  1136. spiritually?

1137. By the end of Exodus

1138. this is a lingering question

  1139. in the reader's mind.

  1140. And in Deuteronomy

  1141. and Joshua

  1142. there is an intimation

1143. of what is to come.

  1144. A hint.

  1145. There's a hint

  1146. that the Mosaic Covenant

  1147. might actually be defective

1148. because it did not change

1149. the hearts of the people

  1150. in Israel.

  1151. I don't say that

  1152. God meant for it

  1153. to be defective

  1154. as we'll understand.

1155. God meant for the Mosaic Covenant

  1156. to be defective.

  1157. So Deuteronomy

1158. really is one long exposition

  1159. of the Mosaic Covenant

  1160. that Moses preaches

  1161. right before the people

1162. enter into the Promised Land.

  1163. And Moses unpacks

  1164. what it means

  1165. for Israel

  1166. to be loyal

  1167. to its covenant God

  1168. in the Mosaic Covenant.

1169. And the most famous verse

  1170. in Deuteronomy

  1171. is the Shema.

  1172. The Shema.

  1173. Hear, O Israel,

  1174. the Lord our God,

  1175. the Lord is one.

  1176. You shall love

  1177. the Lord your God

  1178. with all your heart,

  1179. with all your soul,

  1180. with all your might.

  1181. In these words

1182. that I command you today

1183. shall be on your heart.

  1184. Right?

  1185. Famous Shema.

  1186. Israel must keep

  1187. his law

  1188. and regulations

  1189. to be a kingdom

  1190. of priests

  1191. that God had intended

  1192. them to be.

  1193. God commanded them

  1194. to love him,

  1195. to fear him,

  1196. to treasure him,

  1197. to cling to him.

  1198. If they obey,

  1199. covenant blessings

  1200. will follow.

  1201. They will be established

  1202. in the land.

1203. But if they turn away

  1204. from the Lord,

  1205. covenant curses

  1206. will descend upon them.

  1207. So, but interestingly,

  1208. right in the heart

  1209. of Deuteronomy,

  1210. the author is hinting

  1211. that the law

  1212. and the Mosaic Covenant

  1213. could not change

  1214. anyone's hearts.

  1215. So Moses declares

  1216. to the people,

  1217. but to this day,

  1218. the Lord has not

  1219. given you a heart

  1220. to understand

  1221. or eyes to see

  1222. or ears to hear.

  1223. And in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  1224. chapter 30,

  1225. in order to keep

  1226. the covenant

  1227. God declared,

  1228. he,

  1229. must circumcise

  1230. the people's heart

1231. so they will love him

  1232. with all their heart

1233. and with all their soul

  1234. and live.

  1235. So the very thing

  1236. Moses tells the people

  1237. they needed to do

  1238. in the Shema,

  1239. he later tells them

  1240. they can't do

  1241. unless God gave them

  1242. new hearts to understand.

  1243. Isn't that interesting?

  1244. So in the middle

  1245. of the Mosaic Covenant,

  1246. Moses is prophesying

  1247. about a new covenant

1248. that would need to come.

  1249. So you see,

  1250. the new covenant

  1251. would involve

  1252. a total change

  1253. of heart

  1254. for God's people.

  1255. God needed

  1256. to give them

  1257. new hearts

1258. or what we would say

  1259. today,

  1260. conversion.

  1261. The people

  1262. need to be converted

  1263. by the Spirit.

  1264. I don't think

  1265. Moses fully understood

1266. what he was saying here,

  1267. but the new covenant

  1268. doesn't really become

  1269. explicit until

  1270. Jeremiah's day.

  1271. But you can see

  1272. the progressive revelation

  1273. of the new covenant

  1274. that would establish

  1275. a truly righteous kingdom.

  1276. So you can see

  1277. it starts dimly

  1278. in the Mosaic Covenant,

  1279. but then the Bible

  1280. is going to become

  1281. much clearer

1282. as the story goes along.

  1283. So in Joshua,

  1284. there's a major advance

  1285. in the storyline

  1286. because the second dimension

  1287. of the promise

  1288. to Abraham

  1289. is now fulfilled.

  1290. Israel now possesses

  1291. the land of Canaan.

1292. But with the universal blessing

  1293. promised to Abraham,

  1294. Abraham become

  1295. a reality through them.

  1296. Toward the end

1297. of the book of Joshua,

  1298. when renewing

  1299. the Mosaic Covenant,

  1300. Joshua echoes

  1301. Moses' words

  1302. and tells the people,

  1303. you are not able

  1304. to serve the Lord

  1305. and God's jealous wrath

  1306. will burn against you.

  1307. So the key theme

  1308. in Deuteronomy

  1309. and Joshua

  1310. is this.

  1311. It explains

  1312. that the law

  1313. gave Israel

1314. a set of moral requirements

  1315. but not the power

  1316. to obey them.

  1317. So the law

  1318. gave Israel

1319. a set of moral requirements

  1320. but not the power

  1321. to obey them.

  1322. So the Jews

  1323. weren't asking

  1324. whether Adam

  1325. had a belly button.

  1326. That really wasn't

  1327. on their minds.

  1328. The mystery

  1329. is how is Israel

1330. going to be a blessing

  1331. to the whole earth,

  1332. the whole world,

  1333. if they don't have

  1334. the power

  1335. to obey the law

  1336. in their hearts?

  1337. How is God

  1338. going to build

  1339. a kingdom

  1340. that would bless

  1341. the whole world?

  1342. It's a mystery.

  1343. We don't know

  1344. at this point.

  1345. And as the story

  1346. unfolds,

  1347. the book of Judges

  1348. and Ruth

  1349. would form a bridge

  1350. to the next major

  1351. part of the Bible.

  1352. The book of Judges

  1353. dashes any hope,

  1354. any hope,

  1355. that a kingdom

  1356. of worldwide blessing

  1357. would come through Israel

  1358. anytime soon.

  1359. So God had told

  1360. the people in Deuteronomy,

  1361. you shall not do

  1362. according to all

  1363. that we are doing

  1364. here today,

  1365. everyone doing

  1366. whatever is right

  1367. in his own eyes.

  1368. A recurring verse

  1369. in Judges is,

  1370. every man did

  1371. that which was right

  1372. in his own eyes.

  1373. So the people

  1374. of Israel

  1375. are doing a downward

  1376. nosedive

  1377. as they break

  1378. the Mosaic Covenant

  1379. and how they're living.

  1380. And with these

  1381. gruesome episodes

  1382. of depravity,

  1383. instead of being

  1384. a blessing,

  1385. Israel seemed to be

  1386. cursed with the world.

  1387. So Israel needed

  1388. a new direction,

  1389. a new direction.

  1390. And a common refrain

  1391. in Judges is,

  1392. in those days,

  1393. there was no king

  1394. in Israel.

  1395. There was no king.

  1396. So according to Judges,

  1397. Israel needed

  1398. a righteous king

  1399. for Israel

  1400. to truly be

  1401. a righteous kingdom

  1402. in the world.

  1403. Right?

  1404. But Ruth,

  1405. the book of Ruth,

  1406. in contrast to Judges,

  1407. shows us the beauty

  1408. of living

  1409. under the Mosaic Covenant

  1410. and Yahweh's rule.

  1411. The beautiful

  1412. picture that we get

  1413. of life under

  1414. Yahweh's rule.

  1415. So Boaz,

  1416. right,

  1417. is that kinsman

  1418. redeemer.

  1419. Interestingly,

  1420. Boaz is from

  1421. Bethlehem in Judah.

  1422. And he was

  1423. that kinsman redeemer,

  1424. the relative

  1425. that can redeem

  1426. someone by

  1427. bearing the cost

  1428. himself.

  1429. Just like Yahweh

  1430. redeemed his people

  1431. from Egypt

  1432. in the Exodus,

  1433. the redeemer

  1434. images Yahweh

  1435. who helps

  1436. the helpless.

  1437. And Boaz

  1438. redeeming Ruth

  1439. pictures what

  1440. God would do

  1441. for Israel

  1442. in the future.

  1443. In the fullness

  1444. of God's plan,

  1445. Boaz foreshadows

  1446. the work

  1447. of the greater

  1448. redeemer,

  1449. Jesus,

  1450. who came to

  1451. the spiritually

  1452. destitute,

  1453. those enslaved

  1454. in sin

  1455. and in helpless

  1456. estate,

  1457. and he bore

  1458. the cost himself.

  1459. And just like

  1460. Ruth,

  1461. a Gentile

  1462. was brought

  1463. into the fold

  1464. of God's people

  1465. by the redeemer,

  1466. that future

  1467. descendant of

  1468. Ruth,

  1469. the son of David,

  1470. would one day

  1471. bring many more

  1472. Ruths and many

  1473. more Gentiles

  1474. into the fold

  1475. of God's people.

  1476. So if someone

  1477. invited you to

  1478. listen to a story,

  1479. sit down,

  1480. let me tell you

  1481. a story about

  1482. a redeemer

  1483. who performed

  1484. great acts

  1485. of mercy

  1486. before entering

  1487. into a covenant

  1488. with a bribe

  1489. from the nations.

  1490. That story

  1491. could be about

  1492. Boaz,

  1493. or it could be

  1494. about Jesus.

  1495. That's typology.

  1496. So it's a shadow

  1497. in reality.

  1498. God is giving us

  1499. preparatory shadows

  1500. for the real

  1501. saving events

  1502. that will come

  1503. along.

  1504. along the way.

  1505. And the book

  1506. of Ruth

  1507. closes with

  1508. a genealogy.

  1509. The last word

  1510. in the book

  1511. of Ruth

  1512. is the name

  1513. David.

  1514. So the book

  1515. culminates with

  1516. the man who

  1517. served as

  1518. Israel's king,

  1519. David.

  1520. And the need

  1521. for a king

  1522. is immediately

  1523. fulfilled in

  1524. the reign of

  1525. David.

  1526. The need

  1527. for a king

  1528. that judges

  1529. says in order

  1530. for Israel

  1531. to be a

  1532. righteous nation.

  1533. And David

  1534. comes.

  1535. And of course,

  1536. Boaz and Ruth

  1537. are not only

  1538. ancestors of David,

  1539. but also of Jesus.

  1540. So this far

  1541. in the story,

  1542. we know the promise

1543. of victory over the serpent

  1544. and his offspring

1545. will come through a child

  1546. of Abraham.

  1547. But in 1 and 2 Samuel,

  1548. the author gives us

  1549. a new feature

  1550. about this much

  1551. anticipated promised

  1552. offspring.

  1553. But the divine author

  1554. has been giving us

  1555. hints along the way.

  1556. Yeah.

  1557. Yeah.

  1558. Yeah.

  1559. Yeah.

  1560. Yeah.

  1561. Yeah.

  1562. Yeah.

  1563. Yeah.

  1564. Yeah.

  1565. Yeah.

  1566. Yeah.

  1567. Yeah.

  1568. Yeah.

  1569. Yeah.

  1570. Yeah.

  1571. Yeah.

  1572. Here we go.

  1573. So remember that

  1574. false prophet character

  1575. Balaam,

  1576. who hated Israel

  1577. in the wilderness

  1578. back in the book

  1579. of Numbers?

  1580. Balaam is looking

  1581. to get rich quick.

  1582. All right.

  1583. In Numbers 24,

  1584. God just takes over

  1585. and starts speaking

  1586. through Balaam.

  1587. Listen to what Balaam

  1588. prophesied back

  1589. in the wilderness.

  1590. I see him,

  1591. but not now.

  1592. I behold him,

  1593. but not near.

  1594. A star shall come

  1595. out of Jacob

  1596. and a scepter

  1597. shall rise

  1598. out of Israel

  1599. and it shall crush

  1600. the forehead of Moab

  1601. and break down

1602. all the sons of Sheph.

  1603. Crush the forehead

  1604. of Moab?

  1605. Does that sound familiar?

  1606. It echoes those words

  1607. that God made

  1608. to Adam and Eve,

  1609. doesn't it?

  1610. Back in Genesis 3.

  1611. The offspring

  1612. would crush

  1613. the serpent's head.

  1614. So the story's unfolding.

  1615. The promise

  1616. to Abraham

1617. and to Adam and Eve

  1618. will be fulfilled

  1619. through a king.

  1620. Right?

  1621. So that's progressive

  1622. revelation.

  1623. And God makes

  1624. a covenant

  1625. with this king,

  1626. with David,

  1627. in 2 Samuel 7.

  1628. Think about how

  1629. the covenant

  1630. with David

  1631. might relate

  1632. to the promise

  1633. that God made

  1634. with Abraham

  1635. and Adam and Eve.

  1636. So 2 Samuel 7,

    2 Samuel 7:11–16

  1637. verse 11 to 16.

  1638. This is called

  1639. the Davidic covenant.

  1640. The Davidic covenant.

  1641. The Lord declared

  1642. to David

  1643. that the Lord himself

  1644. will establish

  1645. a house for you.

  1646. When your days

  1647. are over

  1648. and you rest

  1649. with your ancestors,

  1650. I will raise up

  1651. your offspring

  1652. to succeed you.

  1653. Your own flesh

  1654. and blood

  1655. and I will establish

  1656. his kingdom.

  1657. He is the one

  1658. who will build

1659. a house for my name

  1660. and I will establish

  1661. the throne

  1662. of his kingdom forever.

1663. I will be his father

1664. and he will be my son.

  1665. When he does wrong,

  1666. I will punish him

  1667. with a rod wielded

  1668. by men,

  1669. with floggings

  1670. inflicted by human hands.

  1671. But my love

  1672. will never be taken

  1673. away from him

1674. as I took it away

  1675. from Saul,

  1676. whom I removed

  1677. from before you.

  1678. Your house

  1679. and your kingdom

  1680. will endure forever.

  1681. Before me,

  1682. your throne

  1683. will be established

  1684. forever.

  1685. So there's an

  1686. unconditional aspect

  1687. to this covenant.

  1688. God will never,

  1689. ever,

  1690. ever,

  1691. ever,

  1692. ever revoke

  1693. his love

  1694. for David's house.

  1695. However,

  1696. there is a conditional

1697. aspect to it as well.

  1698. The king

  1699. could not presume

  1700. upon God's grace.

  1701. The Lord would discipline

  1702. David's line

  1703. for his transgressions.

  1704. So how do these

  1705. two things relate?

1706. How is the Davidic covenant

1707. related to the previous covenant?

  1708. The Davidic covenant

  1709. is an exposition

  1710. of the previous covenants.

  1711. The promised offspring

  1712. in Genesis 3

  1713. was fulfilled

  1714. with Abraham.

  1715. Moses implemented

  1716. that promise

  1717. and now

  1718. we see

  1719. that

  1720. offspring

  1721. will be a king

  1722. from the house

  1723. of David.

  1724. The promised offspring

  1725. will be a king

  1726. that establishes

  1727. a truly just

  1728. and righteous kingdom.

  1729. So as you read

  1730. this narrative

  1731. of 1 and 2 Samuel,

  1732. you see that David

  1733. was a good king,

  1734. of course.

1735. He was a good king.

  1736. But Israel needed

  1737. a better king.

  1738. David obeyed Yahweh

1739. and trusted in the Lord

  1740. rather than taking

  1741. revenge against Saul

  1742. but he sinned

  1743. extravagantly

  1744. by committing adultery

  1745. with Bathsheba

  1746. and then turning around

  1747. and murdering

  1748. her husband, Uriah.

  1749. So a better king

  1750. was needed

  1751. for the promise

  1752. that Israel

1753. would be a universal blessing.

  1754. So here are

  1755. David's last words.

  1756. I don't know

1757. if you can read that.

  1758. His last words

  1759. in 2 Samuel.

  1760. David draws attention

  1761. to this ideal king.

1762. The spirit of the Lord

  1763. spoke through me.

1764. His word was on my tongue.

1765. The God of Israel spoke.

  1766. The rock of Israel

  1767. said to me,

  1768. when one,

  1769. that is the king,

  1770. rules over people

  1771. in righteousness,

  1772. when he rules

1773. in the fear of God,

1774. he is like the light

  1775. of the morning

  1776. at sunrise

  1777. on a cloudless morning,

  1778. like the brightness

  1779. after rain

  1780. that brings grass

  1781. from the earth.

  1782. So God is speaking

  1783. to David clearly

  1784. in verse 2.

  1785. And this king

  1786. is radically God-centered.

  1787. He rules

1788. in the fear of God

  1789. and dispenses

  1790. justice in the land.

  1791. Israel needed

  1792. a king

  1793. who dawns

  1794. like the light

  1795. of the sun

  1796. and blessed the people

  1797. through gentle rains.

  1798. That king

  1799. would bless

  1800. the whole world.

  1801. And Israel needed

  1802. a better king

  1803. than David.

  1804. So who would be

  1805. that promised king?

  1806. Like the classic story

  1807. in King Arthur

  1808. where the people

  1809. waited for that

  1810. promised king

  1811. who would come

  1812. and pull out

  1813. the sword of Excalibur

  1814. out of the stone.

  1815. The Bible asks

  1816. the question,

  1817. who is that king

  1818. that's going to come?

  1819. Who will be

  1820. the promised king?

  1821. It's a mystery.

  1822. It's a mystery.

  1823. And the Jews

  1824. talked about this.

  1825. The Psalms

  1826. are full of promises

  1827. of that promised

  1828. Davidic king

  1829. when he would

  1830. one day come

  1831. and exercise

  1832. his rule.

  1833. And the future

  1834. Davidic king

  1835. came to be known

  1836. as the Messiah

  1837. or the Christ.

  1838. Who will be

  1839. the Messiah?

  1840. So just like

  1841. we ask ourselves

  1842. when will Christ

  1843. return?

  1844. When will be

  1845. that promised day

  1846. when we will

  1847. be with him

  1848. forever?

  1849. The Jews

  1850. ask themselves

  1851. when will

  1852. this Messiah

  1853. arrive?

  1854. When will

  1855. that righteous

  1856. king come

  1857. and make Israel

  1858. a truly righteous

  1859. kingdom

  1860. that will bless

  1861. the world?

  1862. Will Solomon

  1863. be that king

  1864. who ruled

  1865. into the fear

  1866. of God

  1867. bringing blessing

  1868. to the nations?

  1869. For a brief time

  1870. it almost seemed

  1871. like yeah

  1872. he's the guy.

  1873. It almost seemed

  1874. like the promises

  1875. were right around

  1876. the corner

  1877. in Solomon's reign.

  1878. Solomon's kingdom

  1879. blessed the surrounding

  1880. nations.

  1881. But sadly

  1882. Solomon turned

  1883. away from God.

  1884. And Solomon

  1885. wasn't that king

  1886. the people needed

  1887. for Israel

  1888. to truly be a

  1889. blessing to the world.

  1890. And things

  1891. rapidly deteriorate

  1892. from here on

  1893. with the kings.

  1894. Will Solomon's son

  1895. Rehoboam

  1896. be the promised

  1897. Christ

  1898. to the king

  1899. to bless the world?

  1900. No.

  1901. No.

  1902. He sinned greatly

  1903. by setting up

  1904. false gods

  1905. at the altars.

  1906. What about

  1907. the next king

  1908. Abijah?

  1909. Was he the Christ?

  1910. No.

  1911. His son Asaph?

  1912. No.

  1913. So for centuries

  1914. the kings

  1915. were wicked

  1916. in Israel.

  1917. And the cancer

  1918. of sin

  1919. residing in Israel

  1920. was spreading

  1921. rapidly

  1922. with no godly

  1923. king in sight.

  1924. So

  1925. by the time

  1926. you get to

  1927. the book of

  1928. by the time

  1929. you get

  1930. to the book

  1931. of Isaiah

  1932. the people

  1933. were experiencing

  1934. the covenant

  1935. curses

  1936. right back

  1937. in Deuteronomy

  1938. if you

  1939. if you

  1940. disobey

  1941. the Mosaic

  1942. covenant

  1943. you'll be

  1944. cursed

  1945. and now

  1946. they're experiencing

  1947. the covenant

  1948. curses.

  1949. Widespread

  1950. famine.

  1951. The king

  1952. had split

  1953. into two kingdoms

  1954. Israel

  1955. and Judah.

  1956. The northern

  1957. kingdom

  1958. Israel

  1959. experienced

  1960. this devastating

  1961. storm

  1962. of God's

  1963. judgment.

  1964. The judgment

  1965. described

  1966. is Yahweh's

  1967. strange work

  1968. in Isaiah 28

  1969. for he longed

  1970. to save his

  1971. people

  1972. but he judges

  1973. them as well

  1974. if they turn

  1975. away from his

  1976. goodness.

  1977. And Yahweh

  1978. in Isaiah 6

  1979. is the thrice

  1980. holy one

  1981. right?

  1982. Holy

  1983. holy

  1984. holy

  1985. holy

  1986. he cannot

  1987. tolerate sin

  1988. and Israel

  1989. had made a mess

  1990. of things

  1991. and it almost

  1992. seems as if

  1993. the promise

  1994. of triumph

  1995. over the serpent

  1996. had been

  1997. withdrawn.

  1998. Just like

  1999. Adam was

  2000. exiled from

  2001. the garden

  2002. these nations

  2003. were exiled

  2004. from the

  2005. promised land

  2006. of Canaan.

  2007. The people

  2008. were like

  2009. Gomer

  2010. back in

  2011. Hosea.

  2012. Aren't we

  2013. the same?

  2014. The Lord

  2015. is a faithful

  2016. husband

  2017. but Gomer

  2018. keeps going

  2019. back into

  2020. the brothel

  2021. and God

  2022. says my

  2023. people are

  2024. like that.

  2025. I'm the

  2026. faithful husband

  2027. and my

  2028. people keep

  2029. going back

  2030. into idolatry.

  2031. But God

  2032. remember

  2033. God had

  2034. taken sole

  2035. responsibility

  2036. to fulfill

  2037. the promise.

  2038. what is

  2039. God going

  2040. to do

  2041. at this

  2042. point?

  2043. What can

  2044. he do?

  2045. The people

  2046. are wicked.

  2047. They're not

  2048. a blessing.

  2049. They're

  2050. cursed.

  2051. But in a

  2052. pivotal moment

  2053. in Isaiah

  2054. God repeats

  2055. the Davidic

  2056. covenant.

  2057. The promise

  2058. had not been

  2059. revoked.

  2060. God is going

  2061. to do

  2062. something in

  2063. the future.

  2064. come everyone

  2065. who thirsts

  2066. come to

  2067. the waters

  2068. and he

  2069. who has

  2070. no money

  2071. come

  2072. buy

  2073. and eat

  2074. and I

  2075. will make

  2076. with you

  2077. an everlasting

  2078. covenant

  2079. my steadfast

  2080. sure love

  2081. for David.

  2082. Right?

  2083. Jesus says

  2084. if anyone

  2085. is thirsty

  2086. let him

  2087. come to

  2088. me and

  2089. drink.

  2090. Promise

  2091. kept.

  2092. Right?

  2093. So

  2094. the

  2095. Davidic

  2096. covenant

  2097. had not

  2098. been revoked.

  2099. God is

  2100. still going

  2101. to do

  2102. something

  2103. to establish

  2104. a truly

  2105. righteous

  2106. kingdom

  2107. in the

  2108. world.

  2109. In Isaiah

  2110. one of the

  2111. most famous

  2112. prophecies

  2113. of a

  2114. Davidic

  2115. king

  2116. is found

  2117. in

  2118. Isaiah

  2119. 9

  2120. that we

  2121. read

  2122. during

  2123. Christmas.

  2124. A new

  2125. prophecy

  2126. of this

  2127. future

  2128. Davidic

  2129. king

  2130. is given.

  2131. Isaiah

  2132. explains

  2133. that a

  2134. son is

  2135. coming.

  2136. A child

  2137. is on the

  2138. horizon

  2139. who will

  2140. sit on

  2141. David's

  2142. throne.

  2143. This

  2144. child

  2145. will reign

  2146. as the

  2147. governor

  2148. and rule

  2149. over the

  2150. land

  2151. forever.

  2152. Peace,

  2153. righteousness,

  2154. and justice

  2155. will never

  2156. cease upon

  2157. his coming.

  2158. This

  2159. king is

  2160. remarkable

  2161. for he

  2162. is the

  2163. wonderful

  2164. counselor,

  2165. mighty

  2166. God,

  2167. everlasting

  2168. father,

  2169. prince of

  2170. peace.

  2171. So these

  2172. descriptions

  2173. explode.

  2174. They explode

  2175. the expectation

  2176. of this

  2177. coming king

  2178. who would

  2179. bring the

  2180. kingdom of

  2181. God.

  2182. He is

  2183. much more

  2184. than just

  2185. a mere

  2186. descendant

  2187. of David.

  2188. He is

  2189. that.

  2190. But clearly

  2191. Isaiah's

  2192. promise of

  2193. a king

  2194. who is

  2195. a mighty

  2196. God,

  2197. everlasting

  2198. father,

  2199. was not

  2200. fulfilled in

  2201. his day.

  2202. In chapter

  2203. 11,

  2204. Isaiah

  2205. elaborates on

  2206. this king.

  2207. He is

  2208. the shoot

  2209. from the

  2210. stump of

  2211. Jesse,

  2212. and a

  2213. branch from

  2214. his roots,

  2215. which is a

  2216. description that

  2217. anticipates the

  2218. suffering servant

  2219. described in

  2220. Isaiah 53.

  2221. So he is

  2222. equipped with

  2223. the spirit to

  2224. rule over

  2225. Israel,

  2226. and he

  2227. surpasses all

  2228. previous kings.

  2229. And this

  2230. salvation reaches

  2231. to the ends

  2232. of the earth.

  2233. The promise

  2234. of worldwide

  2235. blessing made

  2236. to Abraham

  2237. will become a

  2238. reality because

  2239. he will bring

  2240. salvation even

  2241. to the Gentiles

  2242. in Isaiah 11.

  2243. And in that

  2244. day,

  2245. Isaiah says,

  2246. your eyes will

  2247. behold the king

  2248. and his beauty.

  2249. So God is

  2250. going to redeem

  2251. Israel, not only

  2252. physically, but

  2253. spiritually too.

  2254. And so God was

  2255. determined to offer

  2256. a new covenant

  2257. which would relate

  2258. to his people

  2259. in which he

  2260. would relate

  2261. to his people.

  2262. In this covenant

  2263. would establish

  2264. a truly just

  2265. and righteous

  2266. kingdom, not

  2267. like the covenant

  2268. made at Mount

  2269. Sinai.

  2270. And the famous

  2271. verse in

  2272. Jeremiah 31

  2273. says this.

  2274. This is the

  2275. covenant I will

  2276. make, says God.

  2277. And notice the

  2278. terms of this

  2279. covenant.

  2280. Jeremiah 31.

  2281. Behold, the

  2282. days are coming,

  2283. declares the

  2284. Lord, when I

  2285. will make a

  2286. new covenant

  2287. with the house

  2288. of Israel and

  2289. the house of

  2290. Judah, not like

  2291. the covenant

  2292. that I made

  2293. with their

  2294. fathers on the

  2295. day when I

  2296. took them by

  2297. the hand to

  2298. bring them out

  2299. the land of

  2300. Egypt.

  2301. My covenant

  2302. that they broke

  2303. though I was

  2304. their husband,

  2305. declares the

  2306. Lord.

  2307. For this is the

  2308. covenant that I

  2309. will make with

  2310. the house of

  2311. Israel after

  2312. those days,

  2313. declares the

  2314. Lord.

  2315. I will put my

  2316. law within

  2317. them and I

  2318. will write it

  2319. on their

  2320. hearts and I

  2321. will be their

  2322. God and they

  2323. shall be my

  2324. people and no

  2325. longer shall

  2326. each one teach

  2327. his neighbor and

  2328. each his brother

  2329. saying, know the

  2330. Lord, for they

  2331. shall all know me

  2332. from the least of

  2333. them to the

  2334. greatest, declares

  2335. the Lord, for I

  2336. will forgive their

  2337. iniquity and I

  2338. will remember

  2339. their sin no

  2340. more.

  2341. So when this new

  2342. David arrives,

  2343. Israel will be

  2344. forgiven its sin

  2345. and given new

  2346. hearts to obey

  2347. the Lord.

  2348. The law will be

  2349. written on their

  2350. hearts as Jeremiah

  2351. says and they'll

  2352. be given new

  2353. hearts as God

  2354. had promised back

  2355. in Deuteronomy

  2356. with Moses.

  2357. Yahweh will show

  2358. compassion and

  2359. mercy on his

  2360. people once again.

  2361. So the Old

  2362. Testament history

  2363. concludes and

  2364. Ezra and

  2365. Nehemiah

  2366. with Israel

  2367. returning from

  2368. exile.

  2369. But the return

  2370. from exile did

  2371. not bring expected

  2372. blessing.

  2373. A new David

  2374. ruling over

  2375. Israel did not

  2376. appear.

  2377. So the Old

  2378. Testament concludes

  2379. on a note of

  2380. expectation.

  2381. The great promises

  2382. for Israel and

  2383. the world were

  2384. not realized.

  2385. And then

  2386. it's with all

  2387. this background

  2388. that an obscure

  2389. person from

  2390. Bethlehem named

  2391. Jesus shows up

  2392. preaching about

  2393. the kingdom of

  2394. God.

  2395. So if you turn

  2396. to Matthew 1.

  2397. 1.

  2398. Basically this

  2399. genealogy about

  2400. Jesus screams

  2401. out to us that

  2402. God who made

  2403. that promise in

  2404. Genesis 3 is now

  2405. fulfilling that

  2406. promise.

  2407. In the very two

  2408. first words of the

  2409. first book of the

  2410. New Testament,

  2411. Matthew grabs the

  2412. very language of

  2413. the opening chapters

  2414. of Genesis.

  2415. The words

  2416. genealogy can be

  2417. replaced with the

  2418. book of Genesis,

  2419. of Jesus Christ.

  2420. God's name is

  2421. the firstborn of

  2422. a new creation.

  2423. And who is he

  2424. saying Jesus is at

  2425. this point?

  2426. He's a new Adam.

  2427. According to

  2428. Matthew, he's not

  2429. only a new Adam,

  2430. he's the son of

  2431. David.

  2432. Who else?

  2433. He's the promised

  2434. seed of Abraham.

  2435. And God is keeping

  2436. his promise to

  2437. Abraham of providing

  2438. an offspring through

  2439. him that would

  2440. bless the entire

  2441. world.

  2442. So the gospel of

  2443. Matthew opens up

  2444. saying the king of

  2445. kings is on the

  2446. scene.

  2447. The king has

  2448. finally returned,

  2449. but no one

  2450. recognizes him.

  2451. The magi come to

  2452. worship him, but the

  2453. other kings like

  2454. Herod are even

  2455. troubled.

  2456. They're even

  2457. threatened by this

  2458. competitor to his

  2459. rule.

  2460. And there's no

  2461. pomp or fanfare

  2462. when this king

  2463. arrives.

  2464. You know, the

  2465. king comes riding

  2466. into Jerusalem on

  2467. a donkey.

  2468. The crowds yell

  2469. out, Hosanna!

  2470. Hosanna!

  2471. Hosanna!

  2472. The son of

  2473. David!

  2474. The king is

  2475. finally here!

  2476. He's arrived!

  2477. He's returned!

  2478. But do the people

  2479. enthrone this

  2480. king?

  2481. No.

  2482. They don't

  2483. enthrone the

  2484. king.

  2485. Instead, the

  2486. king is

  2487. crucified.

  2488. The king is

  2489. crucified by his

  2490. people.

  2491. There's a sign on

  2492. this cross that

  2493. read, Hail the

  2494. king of the

  2495. Jews!

  2496. The king wears a

  2497. purple robe.

  2498. Instead of a

  2499. crown of gold, a

  2500. crown of thorns

  2501. is twisted onto

  2502. his head.

  2503. And when the

  2504. thief on the

  2505. cross looked at

  2506. this crucifixion,

  2507. king, he said,

  2508. Jesus, remember

  2509. me when you

  2510. come into your

  2511. kingdom.

  2512. Somehow, this

  2513. thief thought Jesus

  2514. was presently ruling

  2515. over a kingdom

  2516. while he was being

  2517. crucified.

  2518. At the cross, the

  2519. kingdom had come.

  2520. God's will had been

2521. done on earth as it

  2522. is in heaven.

  2523. The kingdom of God

  2524. comes in power, but

  2525. the power of this

  2526. kingdom is through

  2527. Christ being

  2528. crucified.

  2529. And Jesus rises

  2530. from the dead and

  2531. ascends to his

  2532. throne.

  2533. We have to admit,

  2534. this is a strange

  2535. and unexpected

  2536. kingdom.

  2537. We weren't

  2538. expecting this.

  2539. The readers of the

  2540. Bible, this is a

  2541. plot twist.

2542. And so how does a

  2543. cross relate to the

  2544. kingdom of God?

  2545. Well, through the

  2546. cross, Christ

  2547. inaugurated a new

  2548. covenant to bring

  2549. about a truly just

  2550. and righteous

  2551. kingdom.

  2552. turn to 1 Corinthians

  2553. 11.

2554. We say this when we

  2555. celebrate the Lord's

  2556. Supper.

  2557. For I received from

2558. the Lord what I also

  2559. passed to you.

  2560. The Lord Jesus, on

  2561. the night he was

  2562. betrayed, took bread.

  2563. When he had given

  2564. thanks, he broke it

2565. and said, this is my

  2566. body, which is for

  2567. you.

  2568. Do this in remembrance

  2569. of me.

2570. In the same way, after

  2571. supper, he took the

  2572. cup, saying, this

  2573. cup is the new

  2574. covenant in my blood.

2575. Do this, as often as

  2576. you drink it, in

  2577. remembrance of me.

2578. For as often as you

  2579. eat this bread and

  2580. drink this cup, you

  2581. proclaim the Lord's

  2582. death until he comes.

  2583. So, through Jesus'

  2584. death at the cross

  2585. and resurrection,

  2586. Jesus inaugurated the

  2587. new covenant.

  2588. That truly just and

  2589. righteous kingdom is

  2590. here, that Jeremiah

  2591. prophesied about.

2592. And the people of the

  2593. new covenant are to

2594. be the people of his

  2595. kingdom, who

  2596. especially represent

  2597. God.

  2598. The new covenant is

  2599. bound up with the

  2600. kingdom of God.

  2601. The universal blessing,

  2602. blessing for all

  2603. nations, is the

  2604. people's, come to

  2605. pass in Jesus and

  2606. through his church.

  2607. So, in the old

  2608. covenant, God's people

  2609. consisted almost

  2610. exclusively of Israel.

  2611. But the fullness of

  2612. God's promise to

  2613. Abraham has now become

  2614. a reality.

  2615. Every tribe, tongue,

  2616. people, and nation are

2617. now blessed in Christ as

2618. they trust in him for

  2619. eternal life.

2620. So, now in the New

  2621. Testament, no one, no

  2622. one, not even the

  2623. disciples, ever expected

2624. the kingdom to come in

  2625. two stages.

  2626. Two stages.

2627. Jesus is the king who

  2628. came to establish God's

  2629. kingdom through the new

  2630. covenant.

2631. But the kingdom is not

  2632. consummated.

  2633. It's not consummated.

2634. So, we live in the

  2635. already-but-not-yet

  2636. period.

  2637. Jesus is the righteous

  2638. king who presently is

  2639. ruling wisely.

  2640. And God's special

  2641. kingdom will endure until

2642. it conquers and fills the

  2643. world.

  2644. And that's the final

  2645. destination of biblical

  2646. prophecy, when Jesus

  2647. returns in glory.

  2648. And God's special reign

  2649. will encompass every

  2650. kingdom on earth.

  2651. So, as Richard Sibbes

  2652. once said, faith makes

  2653. us kings, because

  2654. thereby we marry the

  2655. king of heaven.

2656. So, just like Adam, now

  2657. because we're married to

  2658. Christ, we are kings

2659. because he is the king

2660. of heaven, and we are

  2661. in Christ.

  2662. Revelation 22, we see

  2663. the kingdom is perfected.

  2664. It's perfected.

2665. The conquering king is on

  2666. his throne.

  2667. Revelation 22, verse 3

    Revelation 22:3

2668. says, no longer will there

  2669. be anything accursed, but

  2670. the throne of God,

2671. and of the Lamb will be

2672. in it, and his servants

  2673. will worship him.

  2674. Amen.

2675. So we sing, come thou

  2676. long expected Jesus in

  2677. Christmas, to rightly

  2678. recognize that Jesus is

  2679. the long-awaited king.

2680. But this hymn is a

  2681. window into the

  2682. storyline about God's

  2683. kingdom.

  2684. The Old Testament saints

2685. long to see the coming

2686. of the Messiah, but they

  2687. didn't know the Messiah

  2688. was Jesus.

2689. And Jesus is our only

  2690. hope for salvation, born

  2691. a child and yet a king.

2692. So the promised king is

  2693. that all the scriptures

2694. point to, and we are

  2695. waiting for Jesus to

  2696. return once again.

  2697. So here's the lyrics.

2698. I'd love to sing it together

  2699. if we can.

  2700. I'll start.

2701. Come thou long expected Jesus,

2702. born to set thy people free.

2703. From our fears and sins release us.

2704. Let us find our rest in thee.

2705. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth, thou art.

2706. Dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

2707. born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us forever.

2708. Now thy gracious kingdom bring.

2709. By thine own eternal spirit, rule in all our hearts alone.

2710. By thine own, raise us to thy glorious throne.

2711. By thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne.

  2712. Amen.

  2713. Amen.

2714. Let me close this in a word of prayer.

  2715. Amen.

2716. I'm happy to have questions.

2717. Father in heaven, oh Lord, we thank you that Jesus came, born a child yet a king.

2718. The king that was Israel's hope.

2719. And we thank you that we know this king because of your spirit who has regenerated our hearts to love the king more than sin.

2720. And I pray that you would help us to set our eyes on this king today.

  2721. In Jesus' name.

  2722. Amen.

  2723. Amen.

2724. So I have this slide here.

2725. It's more for, it's more, this is going back to our talk last week about allegory versus typology.

2726. And I came across this and I'm like, oh, this is interesting.

2727. Is that allegory or is that typology?

2728. And if so, is it good allegory or is it bad allegory?

2729. But we had other questions, happy to answer them, but this was our, we were talking a lot about allegory and typology last week.

  2730. Any questions?

  2731. No questions.

  2732. Allegory or typology?

  2733. Oh, Tom.

  2734. I have a question.

2735. So I was fascinated by you were drawing similarities between various thoughts, especially the new covenant of Jesus,

2736. the covenant or whatever you want to call it, the promise that God made when they fell,

2737. that there would be a promise to see who would crush the serpent's head, that his heel would be bruised.

2738. But I never realized, I guess, potential connection is what I want to ask you about,

2739. between the Abrahamic covenant and that God made that involved, you know, the killing of animals and that God became.

2740. Between them and that, I was wondering if you could talk about that a little more.

2741. I missed a little bit what you were saying, but it seems like potentially a dramatic kind of further elaboration of God's future suffering.

  2742. Yeah.

  2743. Yeah.

2744. No, I think it does foreshadow Christ's taking a curse at Calvary, especially when, Abraham, if you fail on your side,

2745. I'm going to take the curse on myself, God says.

2746. That's an interesting question because I think here's what people have said,

2747. that the conditionality of the Abrahamic covenant may have been, like, republished in the Mosaic covenant.

2748. In that sense, we can understand that Christ has taken the covenant curses at the cross at Calvary,

2749. DeNorma 27, 28, so there is question about whether, though, that conditionality is being republished.

2750. Because I don't think, otherwise, I don't think that when we talk about covenant curses,

2751. I think we're, people are referring to the Mosaic covenant at Mount Sinai.

2752. I haven't heard people talk about the Abrahamic curses that have happened.

2753. But I think there is a continuity there.

2754. There's a string that, there's a single flow of thought that is definitely foreshadowed in the cross,

2755. in that ceremony, especially in Genesis 15.

2756. Yeah, it's also interesting that, it's so, it needs to be on this idea that these covenants were about,

2757. we have to do, do, do, and work, work, work, to earn our righteousness,

2758. and then all of a sudden, the new covenant comes along, and it's like, oh, it's all changed now.

2759. But it's beautiful to see that that really, I mean, that wasn't the case,

2760. that these covenants had these illusions or predictions or images of God from family.

2761. When you point out the Mosaic covenant, I never realized that Moses is saying,

2762. you've got to do all this, and you've got to be served, and then again, he's like, yeah, God's going to have to talk.

  2763. It's just, it's beautiful, it's encouraging, it's inspiring to see that.

  2764. Thank you, Sharon.

2765. Yeah, thank you, Billy, I appreciate that.

2766. It is wonderful to see that God is, it is really one story centered on Christ.

2767. And that's really biblical theology.

2768. It's tracing that promise that God made to Adam and Eve

2769. that goes through each covenant and finds its climax in Christ.

2770. And that was the goal of trying to walk through all these chapters together.

2771. It was really, that was a lot.

2772. We walked through a lot.

2773. So you mentioned the Noahic, not the covenant,

2774. not quite being a continuation of the covenant with Adam.

2775. Adam, I kind of wanted to push back on that.

  2776. Yeah.

2777. Because you see in, I think it's Peter,

2778. comparing using the flood as a shadow of baptism.

  2779. Yeah.

2780. So it seems like it's almost kind of being pulled back in.

  2781. Hmm.

  2782. Then.

2783. Yeah, no, thank you for, feel free to push back anybody.

  2784. I'm happy, but I think it's a good point.

2785. I think that's well taken because I think the way covenant is reestablishing

2786. sort of the covenant that God made with Adam,

2787. but a little different because he, and, because, and Noah,

2788. you're recognizing the fall at that point.

2789. And he's like, you know, you're going to experience pain and death,

2790. but he is commissioning them similar, Noah,

2791. similar to how he did with Adam.

2792. And there's a similar sort of foreshadowing of God's

2793. unconditional nature kind of underlying all of these covenants.

2794. I think it's interesting to look through these and realize, like,

2795. God sticks out and open the garden before they do anything,

2796. and he promises to see before they've really done anything

2797. that you can tell as a repentance.

2798. And in each of these covenants, God's going,

2799. let's say, okay, we'll see how this goes.

  2800. And there's this.

2801. Yeah, there's that unconditional aspect.

2802. It's kind of like sitting just underneath all the conditions.

2803. And God says, I'm promising to do this if you do that.

2804. But I really want to do this, so we're going to make sure you do that.

  2805. Yeah, yeah.

  2806. Amen.

2807. It is called the great riddle of the Old Testament

2808. of how is God going to fulfill the promise to Abraham,

2809. but also there is two sided conditions in the Mosaic covenant.

2810. If you obey me, then I will do this.

2811. But God says, look, I'm going to do this.

2812. You're going to be a righteous kingdom, and it's going to bless the whole world.

2813. So there is tension in the narrative, and I think God is like,

2814. that's probably a storyline tool to point us to the cross and the new covenants,

2815. because God in Christ is keeping all the covenant conditions for his people on their behalf.

2816. And he's also fulfilling the covenant that God made with Abraham to bless the world through Christ.

2817. So we find, that's why Paul thinks in Christ,

2818. because like we're in, even Paul will say, Christ is the new Israel.

2819. Like, so all that Israel was meant to be, Christ is.

2820. And we find ourselves in Christ.

  2821. So it's fascinating.

2822. You see, there are these divergent parallel plot lines that just find their climax in Christ.

2823. One of the interesting things with theologians,

2824. tracing any one of these things and then trying to elaborate,

2825. what does the gospel look like by focusing on this thing?

2826. So what is the gospel in terms of covenant?

2827. What is the gospel in terms of sacrifice, priesthood, light?

  2828. Yeah.

  2829. Retelling.

2830. It's the same gospel, but it gives us different endpoints of the other.

2831. So are you saying through it all that man has no responsibility?

  2832. I don't think that at all.

2833. What is the tension you're talking about?

2834. The tension of how God is going to relate to his people.

2835. So in Genesis 12, we see God is making an unconditional promise to Abraham.

2836. I'm going to do something for you.

2837. And I'm going to establish a righteous kingdom through your line, Abraham.

2838. And that ceremony is saying, God's saying, look, I'm going to take the curse on myself

2839. if you fail on your side, Abraham.

2840. So in that sense, God's going to do it no matter what.

2841. Another sense, though, the Mosaic covenant is a conditional covenant between God and his people,

2842. where he's like, if you don't keep the terms of this covenant, you're exiled.

  2843. You're gone.

2844. And so I think that's a tension between the terms of both those covenants.

2845. I think man is responsible and Christ is, and God will do his redemption, redemptive plan,

2846. without any help from anybody.

2847. He's going to do it himself.

2848. Those two covenants paired together kind of set up the riddle that's solved in the spirit's empowerment of us.

  2849. Yeah.

  2850. Yeah.

  2851. Right.

2852. Now, you know, the covenants that, you know, have changed from generation to generation.

2853. Do you feel that these covenants are made to make it easier for us to reach heaven,

2854. or is it to encompass more people to reach heaven, or do you think this is each?

2855. It seems like it's easier to get to heaven.

2856. Yeah, I think the covenant there, each covenant is just saying how God is going to relate to his people.

2857. I think Abraham, the account of Abraham is important in Genesis 12,

2858. because it says Abraham was justified by faith.

2859. And Paul in Romans 4 says, now we are justified by faith.

2860. I think God has always related to his people the same way, and that's by faith.

  2861. That hasn't changed.

2862. But I will say, now that we have the spirit, we have a fuller understanding,

2863. a fuller revelation of God's plan through the church.

2864. So, in some ways, it's easier just because it's clearer.

2865. Like, we have God's plan, now it's laid out for us.

2866. But he always means to relate by faith for his people.

2867. I think that, I agree with that, and I think that's a good point of the progressive revelation,

2868. is that I think that when Adam used in the week, chose to depart from God's covenant,

2869. I know there's some debate whether that's the covenant,

2870. but, I mean, there's sort of an agreement that God is holy,

2871. and that he is glorious,

2872. and that to depart from that, to desire to be like God apart from his plan and wisdom,

2873. that so profoundly broke the world,

2874. and just all of creation thrown into futility,

2875. that I think that for humans it was almost necessary to have progressive revelation,

  2876. because we're just now so thick-headed.

2877. You know, it took a little bit at a time,

  2878. God revealing his nature,

2879. while at the same time,

2880. Paul talks about his divine forbearance,

  2881. you know,

2882. God's glory and his nature was transgressed so profoundly,

2883. that he should have had nothing to do with this,

2884. but he was very gracious,

2885. and he revealed more and more of his nature to us,

  2886. I think, as a mercy,

2887. instead of either doing away with us all at once,

2888. or requiring everything of us all at once,

2889. I think he was very gracious to work slowly with a family of people,

2890. that would then be encompassable,

2891. so I think progressive revelation is a good answer for why God chose to work with a small group of people slowly,

2892. because we just need time to get to it.

  2893. That's so true.

2894. He's teaching his people what it's going to mean for them when Jesus eventually comes.

2895. And he's setting up the categories for understanding the gospel.

  2896. Yeah.

  2897. Amen.

  2898. That's such a good thought, brother.

  2899. Thank you.

  2900. So, by the end,

2901. the Bible really is about Christ,

2902. and I think the apostles share that conviction,

2903. so I think if you just walk through each text,

  2904. you kind of see,

2905. yeah, this is actually heading in that direction.

2906. The offspring will come through David,

2907. and David's looking forward to the Messiah.

2908. The Messiah eventually comes and establishes a new covenant,

2909. a truly just and righteous kingdom that Genesis 3 had always,

2910. that's what it was going toward.

2911. So, the structure of the New Testament is pointed to the cross.

2912. I think if you do faithful exposition,

  2913. you'll see that.

  2914. It's not,

2915. I don't think we're imposing anything on the text that's not there itself.

  2916. All right.

  2917. Well, thank you all.

  2918. Thank you all.

  2919. Appreciate it.

  2920. Thank you.

  2921. Thank you.

  2922. Thank you.

  2923. Thank you.

  2924. Thank you.

  2925. Thank you.

  2926. Thank you.

  2927. Thank you.

  2928. Thank you.

  2929. Yeah, I know.

  2930. I know.

2931. It was the light being broken.

2932. Light being broken was one thing.

  2933. I was like, wow.

  2934. God was like, yeah.

  2935. I was like, yeah.

  2936. I was like, yeah.

  2937. I was like, yeah.

  2938. That's Sam?

  2939. Sam Alvarez.

2940. God was not presuming Newman's understanding of physics.

  2941. Yeah, yeah.

  2942. He inspired that.

2943. But you're not wrong about why you're, yeah.

  2944. That's one of those.

2945. You're not getting any false doctrine out of it.

  2946. Yeah, yeah.

2947. Like, if I heard that.

2948. Don't preach that as an exegesis text.

  2949. I know.

2950. If I heard that, I wouldn't be like, he's pushing people to Christ.

  2951. I'm like, hey.

  2952. Right.

  2953. Praise God.

2954. If we just take our bow and just send our prayers.

2955. Yeah, that one was a little bit like, oh.

  2956. I don't know if I like that analogy.

2957. I feel like it makes it sound a little bit too worksy.

2958. But I'd have to see the rest of the time.

2959. Because there's one of those.

2960. Not knowing Spurgeon, I would have real issues with that.

2961. But knowing Spurgeon, I suspect there's better theology going on in the background there.

  2962. So, yeah.

  2963. Yeah.

  2964. It was good.

  2965. Thanks.

  2966. I...

  2967. ...

  2968. ...

2969. The next question you Qualified play.

  2970. Yes.

  2971. ...

2972. You have to kinda like that.

2973. I was going to might berr реш.

  2974. Exactly.
