  1. We're going to start. Good morning.

  2. Good morning.

  3. Let's open up in a word of prayer, shall we?

  4. Our Father in heaven,

  5. Lord, great are your works, studied by all who delight in you.

  6. Father, let us study your works, but ultimately we pray

  7. that your Spirit would help us to delight in you,

  8. the Lord of creation.

  9. Father, and Jesus is the firstborn Son of a new creation.

  10. Lord, help us to look to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

  11. And Lord, on this Reformation Day, Lord, we thank you for the Reformers

  12. who recovered the Gospel, and for saints, men and women,

  13. who have stood firm in the face of opposition

  14. to declare your Gospel, the good news of what Christ has done.

  15. May we be people like that, Lord, who stand on the truth of the Gospel.

  16. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  17. The Bible, as you might know, uses different imagery

  18. to help us to understand our relationship with God.

  19. Christ is the King.

  20. If we trust in Christ, we are citizens of His kingdom.

  21. Christ is the Husband, and the Church is His bride.

  22. Jesus came to reclaim that bride.

  23. He is the Good Shepherd.

  24. We are the sheep.

  25. And He leads His sheep into green pastures.

  26. He is the farmer.

  27. We are divine.

  28. He is the warrior.

  29. He goes to war to save His people.

  30. He is that kinsman redeemer.

  31. He redeems us out of slavery as His inheritance.

  32. He is the rock and a solid foundation to build our lives.

  33. He is our Savior.

  34. And Jesus' name literally means Yahweh saves.

  35. Jesus is our Savior.

  36. He is our refuge and fortress

  37. and an ever-present help in time of trouble.

  38. He is a fire.

  39. And He not only burns in wrath,

  40. but He also purifies His people.

  41. He is the firstborn from the dead,

  42. and that's the start of the new creation.

  43. And finally, He is a Father,

  44. and we are His children,

  45. where we can cry,

  46. Abba, Father.

  47. All these are profound images

  48. that God gives us

  49. to help us think about our relationship with Him.

  50. Today, we'll be talking about the new creation,

  51. which is a different way to describe

  52. the same reality we discussed last week.

  53. that God would establish

  54. a truly just and righteous kingdom

  55. in which He is the King.

  56. And in week one,

  57. we define the discipline of biblical theology

  58. as understanding how the diverse parts of the Bible,

  59. 66 books in total,

  60. fit together into one grand story

  61. centered on Christ.

  62. And when we talk about the major storyline arc

  63. of the Scripture,

  64. people often rightly say

  65. the Bible can be summarized in four words.

  66. All right?

  67. Creation,

  68. fall,

  69. redemption,

  70. and restoration.

  71. So that's the storyline of the Bible,

  72. and that's called a metanarrative.

  73. It's a way of describing

  74. that storyline.

  75. So the Bible is bookended

  76. by the creation in Genesis 1

  77. and the new creation

  78. at the end of Revelation.

  79. So for this class,

  80. we'll have five sections.

  81. First,

  82. we'll start at the new creation

  83. in Revelation 21.

  84. Second,

  85. rewind to the original creation

  86. in Genesis 1 and 2.

  87. Third,

  88. the fall and the effect of sin.

  89. Fourth,

  90. redemption

  91. by looking at

  92. the Exodus

  93. and then the prophesied second Exodus

  94. and God redeeming creation.

  95. and then finally back

  96. to the new creation.

  97. So five parts.

  98. So part one,

  99. the new creation.

  100. The new creation.

  101. So turn to the end of the Bible

  102. to Revelation 21.

  103. Revelation 21,

    Revelation 21:1–5

  104. verses 1 to 5.

  105. John says this,

  106. Then I saw a new heaven

  107. and a new earth.

  108. For the first heaven

  109. and the first earth

  110. had passed away

  111. and the sea was no more.

  112. And I saw the holy city,

  113. a new Jerusalem,

  114. coming down out of heaven

  115. from God,

  116. prepared as a bride

  117. adorned for her husband.

  118. And I heard a loud voice

  119. from the throne saying,

  120. Behold,

  121. the dwelling place of God

  122. is with man.

  123. He will dwell with them

  124. and they will be his people.

  125. And God himself

  126. will be with them

  127. as their God.

  128. He will wipe away

  129. every tear from their eyes

  130. and death shall be no more.

  131. Neither shall there be mourning

  132. nor crying

  133. nor pain anymore

  134. for the former things

  135. have passed away.

  136. And he who is seated

  137. on the throne said,

  138. Behold,

  139. I am making all things new.

  140. Right?

  141. The Bible ends

  142. with the new creation.

  143. And our attention there

  144. is drawn to a beautiful city

  145. coming down out of heaven,

  146. the new Jerusalem,

  147. prepared as a bride

  148. adorned for her husband.

  149. And this isn't just

  150. a holy land

  151. located in the Middle East,

  152. but a new heaven

  153. and a new earth.

  154. Every tear

  155. will be wiped away

  156. and God will again

  157. dwell with his people

  158. face to face.

  159. And one of the glories

  160. of this new creation

  161. of heaven

  162. will be that

  163. we will never need

  164. to say goodbye again.

  165. We at Trinity

  166. know the pain

  167. of having to say goodbye.

  168. Don't we?

  169. Goodbye to saints

  170. who have gone home

  171. to be with the Lord

  172. or goodbye to close friends

  173. that have moved on elsewhere.

  174. So perhaps the Lord

  175. is whetting our appetite

  176. here at Trinity

  177. for the day

  178. when we never need

  179. to say goodbye again.

  180. Right?

  181. And this new creation

  182. will be glorious.

  183. God is concerned

  184. with the renewal

  185. of the entire world.

  186. Creation itself

  187. will be healed.

  188. And this is a vision

  189. John gives us

  190. to show where

  191. the Bible story ends.

  192. The new heavens

  193. and the new earth

  194. is a great act

  195. of new creation.

  196. So if we trust in Christ,

  197. this is our glorious future.

  198. And John,

  199. as you might have imagined

  200. at this point

  201. in our series

  202. in biblical theology,

  203. John is using imagery

  204. that is similar

  205. to another part

  206. of the Bible.

  207. The recreation

  208. reminds us

  209. of the original creation

  210. going back

  211. to the very beginning.

  212. So turn with me

  213. to Genesis 1.

  214. So let's look

  215. at the original creation.

  216. God's original creation.

  217. In Genesis 1,

  218. familiar to us,

  219. we read about

  220. God creating the world.

  221. He created the heavens

  222. and the earth.

  223. Right?

  224. And then God created

  225. Eden, the garden,

  226. as a place for man

  227. and God

  228. to dwell together.

  229. At the end

  230. of the sixth day,

  231. God saw all

  232. that he had made

  233. and it was very good.

  234. From the smallest

  235. subatomic particle

  236. to the largest

  237. galaxy in space,

  238. everything was good

  239. in God's creation.

  240. Now, if you have questions

  241. about how to understand

  242. the creation account

  243. in light of

  244. scientific evidence,

  245. Luke Batty,

  246. Lord willing,

  247. will be discussing this

  248. in the next series.

  249. So stay tuned

  250. if you want to learn

  251. more about the science

  252. and creation.

  253. But you know,

  254. God didn't need

  255. to create the world.

  256. He didn't need

  257. to create the world.

  258. God was perfectly happy

  259. in eternal bliss

  260. before the world

  261. was ever created.

  262. God wasn't lonely.

  263. No, he didn't need us.

  264. He was perfectly happy

  265. within the Trinity,

  266. the Father,

  267. Son, and Spirit.

  268. So why did he do it?

  269. Why did God

  270. create the world

  271. in the first place?

  272. Well, God created

  273. the world

  274. for his own glory.

  275. The heavens

  276. declared the glory

  277. of God

  278. and the skies

  279. proclaimed the work

  280. of his hands,

  281. Psalm 19 tells us.

  282. Through Isaiah,

  283. God says,

  284. bring my sons

  285. from afar

  286. and my daughters

  287. from the ends

  288. of the earth,

  289. everyone who is called

  290. by my name,

  291. whom I created

  292. for my glory,

  293. whom I formed

  294. and made.

  295. God created Israel

  296. for his own glory

  297. and God created

  298. the world

  299. for his own glory.

  300. So creation exists

  301. to show that

  302. the author of creation

  303. is absolutely glorious.

  304. That's why he did it.

  305. And Genesis 2

  306. zooms in

  307. and we see

  308. the creation

  309. of man and women,

  310. the pinnacle

  311. of God's creative work.

  312. So if we were there,

  313. we would have been

  314. witnesses to the very

  315. first marriage.

  316. Adam and Eve,

  317. a bride adorned

  318. for her husband

  319. and the husband

  320. passionately loved

  321. his bride.

  322. Genesis 2.23

  323. is the very first

  324. love poem.

  325. Adam said of Eve,

  326. this is now

  327. bone of my bone

  328. and flesh of my flesh.

  329. And so friends,

  330. it is no accident,

  331. right,

  332. that we find marriage

  333. in the beginning

  334. and end of the Bible.

  335. So when God

  336. instituted marriage

  337. in the account

  338. of creation,

  339. he was providing

  340. the means by which

  341. we might understand

  342. the joy

  343. of an exclusive

  344. covenant love.

  345. So throughout the Bible,

  346. God frequently

  347. addresses us

  348. as people

  349. in the language

  350. of a husband.

  351. Right?

  352. And Paul says

  353. marriage images

  354. the relationship

  355. between Christ

  356. and his church.

  357. And the marriage

  358. ceremony in Genesis

  359. is preparing us

  360. for that great

  361. marriage ceremony

  362. that will happen

  363. in Revelation 21

  364. between Christ

  365. and his people.

  366. When Jesus came

  367. to gather

  368. to himself

  369. the people of God,

  370. he revealed himself

  371. as the bridegroom,

  372. come to claim

  373. his church

  374. as his bride.

  375. In Revelation 21,

  376. John sees that bride,

  377. the church,

  378. adorned for her husband

  379. as Christ marries her.

  380. So Jonathan Edwards

  381. once said,

  382. there may be

  383. many ministers

  384. in the church,

  385. but the church

  386. has only one husband.

  387. A servant

  388. who seeks to gain

  389. attention to himself

  390. is flirting

  391. with Christ's bride.

  392. Right?

  393. You never flirt

  394. with another person's spouse.

  395. Right?

  396. And rather,

  397. servants of Christ

  398. must point the bride

  399. to the husband.

  400. As John the Baptist

  401. said of Jesus,

  402. he must increase,

  403. but I must decrease.

  404. The best man

  405. doesn't take attention

  406. away from the groom

  407. at the wedding.

  408. Right?

  409. And the church

  410. is Christ's

  411. beautiful bride.

  412. Proverbs 31 says,

  413. an excellent wife

  414. who can find.

  415. She is far more

  416. precious than jewels.

  417. Or Proverbs 12,

  418. an excellent wife

  419. is the crown

  420. of her husband.

  421. So if Solomon

  422. could say that

  423. about his wife,

  424. how much more

  425. does Christ love

  426. his church?

  427. Right?

  428. So friend,

  429. the church isn't perfect,

  430. but it will be

  431. once Christ returns.

  432. You know,

  433. perhaps when the church

  434. doesn't live up

  435. to its calling,

  436. it should make us

  437. more frustrated.

  438. It's like seeing

  439. our children misbehave.

  440. Like, I love you

  441. too much to see you

  442. misbehave that way.

  443. And perhaps you felt

  444. that way about the church.

  445. But let me ask you,

  446. though,

  447. do you love the church

  448. the way Christ

  449. loves his church?

  450. The church is Christ's

  451. beautiful bride.

  452. He died for her.

  453. He has an exclusive

  454. covenant love

  455. for his bride.

  456. Friends,

  457. do we love the church

  458. that way,

  459. the way Christ

  460. sees the church?

  461. And so that marriage

  462. between Adam and Eve

  463. is preparing us

  464. for the joy

  465. of that wedding celebration

  466. on that last day

  467. when Christ returns.

  468. Come, Lord Jesus.

  469. All right?

  470. And Genesis 3.8

  471. describes God

  472. walking and talking

  473. with Adam and Eve.

  474. The dwelling place

  475. of God is with man.

  476. And both were to spread

  477. that glory

  478. to the ends of the earth,

  479. filling the earth

  480. with image bearers,

  481. as we discussed last week.

  482. That's paradise.

  483. Everything's good.

  484. Everything's perfect.

  485. It's the pinnacle

  486. of God's creative work.

  487. But of course,

  488. as we know,

  489. tragedy strikes.

  490. In the Bible,

  491. Genesis 3,

  492. tragically,

  493. Adam and Eve

  494. rebel against the God

  495. who gave them

  496. paradise and creation.

  497. They are exiled,

  498. exiled from the garden,

  499. from God's very presence,

  500. thrust into a deep darkness,

  501. into a violent world.

  502. So every good story

  503. has a tension in it.

  504. A problem must be resolved.

  505. And what's the problem

  506. in the Bible?

  507. What's the first problem

  508. that happens?

  509. It's the devastating effects

  510. of sin on creation

  511. and God's original intention

  512. in creation.

  513. So because of sin,

  514. all of creation

  515. was subject to death

  516. and pain.

  517. The old creation

  518. came into the world

  519. through Adam's sin.

  520. The old creation

  521. was subject

  522. to frustration

  523. and futility

  524. because of it.

  525. all of creation groans.

  526. Thorns,

  527. thistles,

  528. and pain

  529. are the consequences

  530. of sin.

  531. Corruption

  532. and death

  533. characterizes it.

  534. So in Tolkien,

  535. the Lord of the Rings,

  536. the two towers

  537. were Saruman's

  538. Isengard

  539. and Sauron's

  540. Mordor.

  541. The two towers.

  542. In the Bible,

  543. death and sin

  544. reign as the twin towers,

  545. as cosmic powers

  546. over the world.

  547. So in Adam,

  548. all die.

  549. And because of Adam's

  550. one sin,

  551. all people enter the world

  552. condemned spiritually dead

  553. and as sinners,

  554. as Paul says

  555. in Ephesians 2.

  556. Human beings

  557. are not only subject

  558. to sin,

  559. in the old creation

  560. they are slaves

  561. to Satan,

  562. who is the prince

  563. of the power of the air.

  564. As the sons and daughters

  565. of Adam,

  566. human beings

  567. are by nature

  568. children of wrath.

  569. The root sin,

  570. the most fundamental sin

  571. in the old creation,

  572. consists in the refusal

  573. to give praise

  574. and thanks

  575. and glory to God.

  576. Sin gives all glory

  577. to self,

  578. refusing to believe

  579. in God's word,

  580. trusting in our own wisdom.

  581. Faith gives all glory

  582. to God,

  583. believing that he will

  584. carry out what he promised.

  585. And the symptom

  586. of this sickness

  587. of sin is boasting,

  588. which is exalted

  589. ourselves over God.

  590. But that distorts reality,

  591. doesn't it?

  592. There is nothing falser

  593. than exalting ourselves

  594. over the creator God.

  595. But Adam,

  596. Eve did this,

  597. you and I do this.

  598. Pride or boasting

  599. is the mark

  600. of the old creation

  601. with a refusal

  602. to trust in God.

  603. So nevertheless,

  604. death is not the final word

  605. in these opening chapters.

  606. Right?

  607. God gave that first

  608. gospel promise

  609. in Genesis 3.15.

  610. The proto-evangelium

  611. we discussed last week.

  612. We see the promise

  613. of victory

  614. over the serpent.

  615. The offspring of Eve

  616. will crush the serpent.

  617. The triumph over evil

  618. is pledged

  619. at the very beginning

  620. in that gospel promise.

  621. The chosen offspring

  622. of Eve

  623. will crush the serpent

  624. one day.

  625. And this is

  626. the proto-evangelium.

  627. In Genesis 3,

  628. the new creation

  629. is promised.

  630. So it sets up

  631. multiple conflicts

  632. that propels

  633. the narrative forward

  634. in the Bible,

  635. the proto-evangelium.

  636. The first conflict

  637. in this

  638. is between Eve

  639. and the serpent.

  640. Right?

  641. And that started

  642. with the serpent's

  643. deception of Eve.

  644. The second conflict

  645. is between

  646. the woman's offspring

  647. and the serpent's offspring.

  648. Right?

  649. Your offspring

  650. and her offspring.

  651. So all the offspring

  652. of Adam and Eve

  653. come into the world

  654. as offspring

  655. of the serpent.

  656. But those who are

  657. the offspring of Eve

  658. are those who are

  659. recipients of God's grace.

  660. And the third conflict

  661. is between

  662. the specific offspring,

  663. the male descendant

  664. that will come.

  665. And the heel

  666. of the Savior

  667. will be bruised,

  668. but the Savior

  669. shall crush

  670. the serpent's head.

  671. So from this point on

  672. in Genesis,

  673. Genesis depicts

  674. two lines of seed

  675. at war with each other.

  676. The offspring of Satan

  677. want to murder

  678. the offspring of Eve.

  679. And the offspring

  680. of the serpent

  681. are enemies

  682. of the offspring of Eve.

  683. So the point

  684. isn't to say here

  685. that Satan

  686. physically conceived

  687. these children.

  688. The Bible is saying

  689. the children of Satan

  690. emulate his characteristics.

  691. They share the same nature

  692. as Satan,

  693. the serpent.

  694. And so this theme

  695. of hostility

  696. between the two lines

  697. will now characterize

  698. the biblical narrative

  699. going forward.

  700. So we begin to see

  701. the rapid rise

  702. of the serpent's offspring.

  703. Eve said of Cain,

  704. I have gotten a man

  705. with the help

  706. of the Lord.

  707. This son, Cain,

  708. is from the Lord.

  709. What a hopeful beginning.

  710. It seems that Eve

  711. may have even thought

  712. that her firstborn son,

  713. Cain,

  714. was that promised offspring

  715. that would crush

  716. the serpent.

  717. Everything began

  718. with a wonderful promise,

  719. just like Judas.

  720. But it doesn't take long

  721. before Cain's character

  722. is revealed to us.

  723. As Shakespeare once wrote,

  724. looks like the innocent flower,

  725. but there's a serpent

  726. under it.

  727. In a plot twist,

  728. Cain was the offspring

  729. of the serpent

  730. and murdered Abel.

  731. And 1 John exhorts us,

  732. do not be like Cain,

  733. who belonged

  734. to the evil one

  735. and murdered his brother.

  736. And why did he murder him?

  737. Well, because his own

  738. actions were evil

  739. and his brothers

  740. were righteous.

  741. Cain belonged

  742. to the serpent,

  743. the evil one.

  744. And why did he murder

  745. his brother?

  746. Cain murdered his brother

  747. because Abel

  748. was righteous.

  749. Cain is marked

  750. by the old creation

  751. from the line

  752. of the serpent,

  753. someone who is proud

  754. who hates the righteous,

  755. the offspring of Eve.

  756. In Genesis 4.11,

  757. God cursed Cain

  758. just like he had done

  759. to the serpent.

  760. God said to Cain

  761. in Genesis 4.11,

  762. and now you are cursed

  763. from the ground

  764. like father,

  765. like son.

  766. And later in Genesis 12,

  767. anyone opposed to Abraham

  768. will be cursed.

  769. And the word curse

  770. is the same word

  771. that God uses

  772. toward Cain

  773. and the serpent.

  774. So the two lines

  775. are going to be at war.

  776. The line of Abraham's offspring

  777. and the serpent

  778. will be at war.

  779. We see that early on

  780. in Genesis.

  781. Jesus would tell

  782. the Pharisees

  783. that they are the offspring

  784. of the serpent

  785. in John 8.44.

  786. Remember that verse?

  787. You are of your father

  788. the devil

  789. and your will

  790. is due to your father's desires.

  791. He was a murderer

  792. from the beginning

  793. and does not stand

  794. in the truth

  795. because there is no truth

  796. in him.

  797. When he lies,

  798. he speaks out of

  799. his own character

  800. for he is a liar

  801. and the father of lies.

  802. Jesus is telling them

  803. they, the Pharisees,

  804. are the offspring serpent.

  805. They are opposing him.

  806. And John the Baptist

  807. even calls them

  808. a brood of vipers.

  809. So the conflict

  810. between the serpent's

  811. offspring

  812. and Eve's offspring

  813. intensifies

  814. in the New Testament

  815. as Christ

  816. now is actively battling

  817. Satan face to face

  818. in the wilderness.

  819. And Judas, remember,

  820. is possessed by Satan

  821. and hands Jesus

  822. over to be murdered.

  823. So that ancient conflict

  824. is unfolding

  825. and intensifying

  826. in the Gospels.

  827. So it's not surprising

  828. then, right,

  829. when Jesus says,

  830. if the world hates you,

  831. know that it hated me

  832. before it hated you.

  833. If you are in Christ,

  834. all the offspring

  835. of the serpent

  836. will hate you.

  837. Just like in Genesis.

  838. And so,

  839. in the narrative

  840. in Genesis,

  841. it seems like

  842. the offspring

  843. of the serpent

  844. were triumphing.

  845. Cain goes on

  846. to build an evil empire.

  847. So that's the line

  848. of Cain right there

  849. in that Albi Seth.

  850. The seventh generation

  851. from Cain

  852. is Lamech.

  853. Right here.

  854. Right here.

  855. Who is the first

  856. recorded polygamist

  857. who even boasted

  858. about killing a man

  859. because the man

  860. merely struck him.

  861. So understanding

  862. the narrative

  863. between the two lines

  864. helps us to guard

  865. against us

  866. from the era

  867. of thinking

  868. that polygamy

  869. is acceptable

  870. simply because

  871. it's in the Bible

  872. as people say.

  873. Right,

  874. the Bible is not

  875. applauding polygamy

  876. if you understand

  877. how the story

  878. is unfolding.

  879. Lamech was a polygamist.

  880. That doesn't mean

  881. that God is approving

  882. of polygamy.

  883. So we have to understand

  884. the narrative

  885. of what's going on,

  886. what's happening.

  887. In Genesis 4.25

  888. we read of the line

  889. of the promise.

  890. Eve bore a replacement

  891. for righteous Abel

  892. a son named Seth.

  893. And to Seth

  894. also a son was born

  895. and he called

  896. his name Enosh.

  897. At that time,

  898. verse 26,

  899. chapter 4 says,

  900. the people began

  901. to call upon

  902. the name of the Lord.

  903. So there's the promised

  904. line of the offspring

  905. of Eve.

  906. Seth's line

  907. are the recipients

  908. of God's grace.

  909. in Genesis 1-11,

  910. because of the offspring

  911. of the serpent

  912. were spreading so rapidly,

  913. God had to destroy them

  914. with a flood,

  915. showing that God

  916. rules and reigns

  917. even when evil

  918. seems to have

  919. the upper hand.

  920. So there is

  921. a new beginning

  922. of sorts

  923. when God

  924. destroyed the earth

  925. in a flood,

  926. a recreation

  927. of sorts.

  928. God hits

  929. the reset button.

  930. He gave them

  931. away a covenant

  932. showing that God

  933. is committed

  934. to his creation.

  935. We discussed

  936. the ins and outs

  937. of the covenants

  938. last week

  939. if you're interested

  940. in that.

  941. He will not

  942. destroy the earth

  943. again by a flood.

  944. But

  945. the human race

  946. fails

  947. even after being

  948. given a fresh start.

  949. The Tower of Babel

  950. is right around

  951. the corner.

  952. Humans continue

  953. to demonically

  954. reject God.

  955. The reset button

  956. did not solve

  957. the problem

  958. of the human heart.

  959. So even with

  960. an entirely

  961. recreated world,

  962. the human heart

  963. had not changed

  964. one bit.

  965. So to solve

  966. the problem

  967. of this demonic

  968. rejection of God,

  969. we see early on

  970. that this will not

  971. come unless

  972. humanity is given

  973. a new heart.

  974. That's the problem

  975. the Bible is

  976. presenting to us.

  977. When Adam fell

  978. in the garden,

  979. the human heart

  980. was profoundly,

  981. profoundly polluted

  982. by sin.

  983. So Martin Lloyd

  984. Jones once said,

  985. our nature,

  986. man's nature

  987. is fallen.

  988. Man is wrong

  989. at the center

  990. of his being

  991. and therefore

  992. everything is wrong.

  993. He cannot be improved

  994. for finally

  995. nothing will suffice

  996. but a radical

  997. change,

  998. a new nature.

  999. Man loves darkness

  1000. and hates the light.

  1001. Man loves darkness

  1002. and hates the light.

  1003. As Martin Luther said,

  1004. there's a bondage

  1005. to sin,

  1006. a slavery to sin

  1007. that we all

  1008. inherit in Adam.

  1009. And that's the pattern

  1010. that's emerging.

  1011. Natural humans

  1012. love the darkness.

  1013. The fundamental

  1014. problem of the world

  1015. in Genesis 11

  1016. is within

  1017. the human heart.

  1018. Natural humanity

  1019. loves to sin.

  1020. It's not that they

  1021. just sin,

  1022. that we just sin.

  1023. It's that we love

  1024. to sin.

  1025. Our affections

  1026. are disordered.

  1027. And without Christ,

  1028. we love the darkness.

  1029. Jeremiah would say,

  1030. the heart is deceitful

  1031. above all things

  1032. and desperately sick.

  1033. From Genesis 3 to 11,

  1034. that's the pattern

  1035. that's emerging

  1036. in the narrative.

1037. And I think this will

1038. always be a pressure point

1039. for hearers of the Bible.

  1040. Many reject the message

  1041. of the gospel

  1042. because it doesn't really

1043. scratch an itch for us.

  1044. Why would I need

  1045. a savior to die

  1046. for my sin?

  1047. Why do I need

  1048. to be set free?

1049. I'm really not that bad.

  1050. Really, come on.

  1051. I'm not bad.

  1052. And because we don't

  1053. understand the gravity

  1054. of the problem,

  1055. the gospel doesn't really

1056. seem to apply to us.

  1057. But we know pride

  1058. is the deadliest

  1059. and most subtle form

  1060. of all sins.

  1061. Pride blinds us

  1062. to reality.

1063. So if we don't think

  1064. we are lost

  1065. without Christ,

1066. well, that's the clearest sign

1067. that we actually are lost.

  1068. So Adam's sin

  1069. in Genesis

  1070. is like a virus

  1071. that has spread

1072. to the entire human race.

  1073. So if our view

  1074. of sin is superficial,

  1075. then we will undoubtedly

  1076. have a superficial view

  1077. of salvation.

  1078. And that's what's happening

  1079. from Genesis 11.

1080. And if we were there,

1081. if we were in Genesis 11,

  1082. how in the world

1083. are we going to get

  1084. to Revelation 21?

  1085. Where God's going to

  1086. wipe away every tear.

1087. Where there is no longer

  1088. any sin.

1089. How is God going to

  1090. recreate what was lost

  1091. by the fall?

  1092. So,

  1093. at this point,

  1094. there's a seed

  1095. of the new creation.

  1096. God will redeem creation

  1097. through a man,

  1098. Abraham.

  1099. At this point,

  1100. this one man,

  1101. in fact himself,

  1102. an idolater

  1103. in an evil world,

  1104. God called this man

  1105. out of darkness

  1106. and promised him blessing.

  1107. He was called

  1108. out of darkness

  1109. into light.

1110. And this man is Abraham

1111. who we discussed last week.

  1112. So I just said,

  1113. Abraham is in respect

  1114. a new Adam.

1115. And the land of Canaan

1116. would be the new Eden.

  1117. Abraham's descendants

  1118. would be the promised

  1119. offspring of Eve.

  1120. The offspring

1121. that God promised to Eve

1122. will now be a descendant

  1123. of Abraham.

  1124. And God's new humanity

1125. would spread to the entire world.

  1126. All the families

  1127. of the earth

  1128. shall be blessed

  1129. through you, Abraham.

  1130. So right there

  1131. in Genesis 12,

  1132. God is going to

  1133. recreate the world.

  1134. So last week,

  1135. we traced the promise

  1136. of God recreating

1137. the kingdom that was lost

  1138. in the garden

  1139. through Abraham.

  1140. But the citizens

  1141. of this kingdom

1142. will also be the creatures

1143. of, will be the people

  1144. of the new creation.

  1145. Right?

1146. Paul says in 2 Corinthians

  1147. 5 or 17,

  1148. Therefore,

  1149. if anyone

  1150. is in Christ,

1151. he is a new creation.

1152. The old has passed away.

  1153. Behold,

  1154. the new has come.

1155. So if you belong to Christ,

1156. you are a new creation,

  1157. friend.

  1158. And the new creation

  1159. is a different way

  1160. of describing

  1161. the kingdom of God.

1162. Both are just different ways

  1163. of describing

  1164. the same reality.

  1165. So that's biblical theology

  1166. lets each part

1167. speak with its own voice,

  1168. but all these

  1169. different ways

  1170. of describing it

  1171. fit into the overall

  1172. choir of Scripture

  1173. of God's going to

  1174. redeem all of creation.

1175. So how does the promise

  1176. of the new creation

1177. unfold in the New Testament?

  1178. Well,

  1179. unexpectedly,

  1180. it might surprise you,

  1181. but in the Pentateuch,

  1182. we see the promise

  1183. of a new creation

  1184. and the Exodus

  1185. are related events.

  1186. The pattern

  1187. of our salvation

  1188. is established

  1189. in the Exodus.

  1190. How is that?

  1191. How are they related?

  1192. Well,

  1193. God redeems

  1194. his people

  1195. out of slavery

  1196. and it leads

  1197. to the new creation.

  1198. The Lord

  1199. crushed Pharaoh,

  1200. that offspring

  1201. of the serpent

  1202. who attempted

  1203. to annihilate

  1204. the offspring

  1205. of Abraham.

  1206. And that pattern

  1207. will apply

  1208. in the New Testament

  1209. as well.

  1210. the Exodus

  1211. is the moment

  1212. in the Old Testament

  1213. which led

  1214. to the new creation

  1215. of the people

  1216. of Israel.

  1217. So the Exodus

  1218. is the moment

  1219. where God saves

  1220. his people

  1221. out of Egypt

  1222. and brings them

  1223. to Mount Sinai

  1224. and constitutes

  1225. Israel

  1226. as a new nation

  1227. and begins

  1228. to dwell with them.

  1229. So before the cross

  1230. there was the Exodus.

  1231. So whereas

  1232. John Stott

  1233. wrote the cross

  1234. of Christ

  1235. in the Old Testament

  1236. the Jews

  1237. would be writing

  1238. books titled

  1239. The Exodus

  1240. of Yahweh

  1241. or C.J.

  1242. Mahaney's

  1243. The Cross-Centered Life

  1244. they'd write

  1245. The Exodus-Centered Life

  1246. something like that.

  1247. So today

  1248. if we talk

  1249. to a person

1250. and we want to say

1251. look God is a redeemer

  1252. a deliverer

  1253. a savior

  1254. we would point

  1255. that person

  1256. to the cross.

1257. But in the Old Testament

  1258. when the psalmist

  1259. wanted to praise God

  1260. and tell of God's

  1261. majestic acts

1262. as a savior to Israel

  1263. the psalmist

  1264. tells of the Exodus.

  1265. So Psalm 105

  1266. recounts

  1267. the verses

  1268. within the Exodus

  1269. the

  1270. the

  1271. the facts

  1272. of the Exodus.

  1273. The psalmist

  1274. says this

  1275. He sent Moses

  1276. his servant

  1277. and Aaron

  1278. whom he had chosen

  1279. they performed

  1280. his signs among them

  1281. and miracles

1282. in the land of Ham.

  1283. He sent darkness

1284. and made the land dark.

  1285. They did not rebel

  1286. against his words.

  1287. He turned their waters

  1288. into blood

  1289. and caused their fish

  1290. to die.

  1291. Their land

  1292. swarmed with frogs.

  1293. Even in the chambers

  1294. of their kings

  1295. he spoke

  1296. and there came

  1297. swarms of flies

  1298. and gnats

  1299. throughout their country.

  1300. He gave them

  1301. hail for rain

1302. and fire and lightning bolts

  1303. through their lands

  1304. and skipping ahead

  1305. He struck down

  1306. all the firstborn

  1307. in their land

  1308. the firstfruits

  1309. of all their strength

  1310. so He brought

  1311. His people out

  1312. with joy

  1313. His chosen ones

  1314. with singing

  1315. and He gave them

1316. the land of the nations

  1317. and they took possession

  1318. of the fruit

  1319. of the people's toil

  1320. that they might

  1321. keep His statutes

  1322. and observe His laws.

  1323. Praise the Lord.

  1324. God saved His people

  1325. through the Exodus

  1326. and in the Exodus

  1327. God demonstrated

  1328. His power

  1329. above all the other

  1330. false gods

  1331. in Egypt.

  1332. So taking on

  1333. all the other

  1334. false gods

  1335. of the Egyptians

  1336. God proved

  1337. His majesty

  1338. and supremacy

  1339. in every realm

  1340. of creation.

  1341. He shows His power

1342. and there is no one

  1343. above Yahweh.

  1344. The immenseity

  1345. of His power

  1346. is on display

  1347. in the ten plagues.

1348. But if you read carefully

  1349. there is an echo

  1350. of God's work

  1351. in creation itself

  1352. throughout God's

  1353. saving act

  1354. in the Exodus.

  1355. The escape

  1356. from slavery

  1357. in Egypt

1358. is a new creation story.

  1359. Not the creation

  1360. of the universe

  1361. but the creation

  1362. of a new nation

  1363. Israel

  1364. of God's

  1365. new humanity.

1366. So in the ten plagues

  1367. in Egypt

  1368. God is reversing

  1369. the order of creation

  1370. as God brings chaos

  1371. and judgment

  1372. in Egypt

  1373. where He rescues

  1374. the Hebrew people.

  1375. Water is being

  1376. turned to blood.

  1377. Instead of giving

  1378. life to animals

  1379. animals are dying.

  1380. Rather than light

  1381. appearing

  1382. God is bringing

  1383. darkness

  1384. in Egypt.

  1385. And the touchstone

  1386. that God instituted

  1387. was the Passover meal

  1388. to remind them

  1389. how God

  1390. delivered them

  1391. the people

  1392. out of slavery.

  1393. And if the blood

  1394. of the lamb

  1395. was on the door

  1396. God's judgment

  1397. would not enter

  1398. but would pass

  1399. over the house.

  1400. The lamb

  1401. stood in place

  1402. of the firstborn son.

  1403. What a powerful image

  1404. of God's saving power.

  1405. And Lord willing

  1406. Nick presently

  1407. will be walking us

  1408. through the theme

  1409. of sacrifice.

  1410. That lamb

  1411. the Passover lamb

  1412. is picturing

  1413. the lamb of God

  1414. who came

  1415. to take away

1416. the sin of the world.

1417. And then at the Red Sea

  1418. as chaos

  1419. and darkness

  1420. threatened

  1421. to engulf

  1422. the people

  1423. the dramatic

1424. crossing of the Red Sea

  1425. echoes the ancient

  1426. creation account

  1427. itself.

  1428. In this chaos

  1429. the God

  1430. who made light

  1431. shine into darkness

  1432. who formed the land

  1433. and sea

  1434. will do so

  1435. once again.

  1436. So at the sea

  1437. the waters

  1438. are divided

  1439. so that dry land

  1440. appears.

  1441. And the word wind

  1442. the wind blows

  1443. over the sea

  1444. and that word wind

  1445. is the same word

  1446. used for the spirit

  1447. hovering over the waters

  1448. in Genesis 1.

  1449. So the crossing

  1450. of the Red Sea

  1451. is a new

  1452. creative act

  1453. of God.

  1454. An act that

  1455. creates the new

  1456. people of Israel.

  1457. So the Red Sea

  1458. marks the moment

  1459. that Israelites

  1460. escaped slavery

  1461. and became

  1462. the people of God.

  1463. So as Baptists

  1464. this imagery

  1465. should really

  1466. resonate with us.

  1467. So this same pattern

  1468. applies to us

  1469. doesn't it?

  1470. In Christ

  1471. God's new covenant

  1472. people are free

  1473. from slavery

  1474. to sin

  1475. and judgment

  1476. in the Red Sea

  1477. and we come out

  1478. as God's

  1479. new creations.

  1480. And the waters

  1481. of baptism

  1482. picture that.

  1483. We go down

  1484. with Christ

  1485. in judgment

  1486. and we are

  1487. raised to new

  1488. life.

  1489. So the crossing

  1490. of the Red Sea

  1491. as we discussed

  1492. is typology

  1493. for baptism.

  1494. It's typology.

  1495. Remember we said

  1496. in the first week

  1497. we need to understand

  1498. this idea of typology

  1499. to understand how

  1500. the New Testament

  1501. apostles interpreted

  1502. the Old Testament.

1503. here is such an example.

  1504. Listen to what Paul

  1505. says to the church

  1506. at Corinth

  1507. in 1 Corinthians 10

  1508. and how he interprets

  1509. the crossing

  1510. of the Red Sea.

  1511. So this slide

  1512. is the most exciting

  1513. thing that's going

  1514. to happen in this

  1515. class today

  1516. with the emojis.

1517. For I do not want

  1518. you to be unaware

  1519. brothers

  1520. that our fathers

  1521. were all under

  1522. the cloud

  1523. and all passed

  1524. through the sea

  1525. and all were baptized

  1526. into Moses

  1527. in the cloud

  1528. and in the sea

  1529. and all ate

  1530. the same spiritual food

  1531. and all drank

  1532. the same spiritual drink.

  1533. Nevertheless

  1534. with most of them

  1535. God was not pleased

  1536. for they were

  1537. overthrown

  1538. in the wilderness.

  1539. So it seems

  1540. the church at Corinth

  1541. thought the act

  1542. of baptism

  1543. and partaking

  1544. the Lord's Supper

  1545. would save them

  1546. even if their lives

  1547. were filled

  1548. with idolatry

  1549. like some magic

  1550. antidote to poison.

  1551. So as long

  1552. as they show up

  1553. on Sundays

  1554. and take the elements

  1555. God's pleased with me

  1556. right?

  1557. No, that's not

  1558. how this works

  1559. Paul says.

  1560. Paul warns them

  1561. by explaining

  1562. the Israelites

  1563. had their own

  1564. form of baptism

  1565. and the Lord's Supper

  1566. right?

  1567. And nevertheless

  1568. they did not

  1569. please God

  1570. they were still

  1571. overthrown.

  1572. So typologically

  1573. when crossing

  1574. the Red Sea

  1575. the Israelites

  1576. were baptized

  1577. and Paul is saying

  1578. Israel's version

  1579. of baptism

  1580. and the Lord's Supper

  1581. did not protect

  1582. them from judgment

  1583. and so likewise

  1584. the Corinthians

  1585. taking the elements

  1586. of taking the Lord's

  1587. Supper

  1588. and getting baptized

  1589. will not save

  1590. them from judgment

  1591. if they are not

  1592. repenting of sin

  1593. right?

  1594. And that warning

  1595. still applies to us.

  1596. So as we learn

  1597. to interpret

  1598. the Old Testament

  1599. the way the Apostles

  1600. did you see how

  1601. important typology

  1602. is.

  1603. Now some see

  1604. this typology

  1605. and say

  1606. just like Israel

  1607. was saved

  1608. by passing

  1609. through the waters

  1610. of the Red Sea

  1611. the waters of baptism

  1612. actually save us.

  1613. So that view

  1614. is called

  1615. baptismal regeneration.

  1616. So Roman Catholics

  1617. and Lutherans

1618. would point to the Red Sea

  1619. and say

  1620. see

  1621. the waters of baptism

  1622. save us.

  1623. Lutherans

  1624. they have different

  1625. slightly different ways

  1626. of explaining that

  1627. but in the end

  1628. they think

  1629. the act of

  1630. the waters

  1631. and baptism

  1632. will save

  1633. the people.

  1634. So they are using

  1635. a typology based argument

  1636. and it's a big one.

1637. And before we move on

  1638. I don't think

  1639. we should view

  1640. the waters of baptism

  1641. as a thing

  1642. that saves us.

  1643. So water alone

1644. has no power to save.

  1645. God through his spirit

  1646. saves.

  1647. So water imagery

  1648. is used elsewhere

  1649. to refer to the

  1650. sovereign work

  1651. of the Holy Spirit

  1652. to regenerate our hearts

  1653. and make us

  1654. into new creations.

  1655. So Titus 3.5

  1656. says

  1657. he saved us

  1658. not because of

  1659. works done by us

  1660. in righteousness

  1661. but according to

  1662. his own mercy

  1663. by the washing

  1664. of regeneration

  1665. and renewal

  1666. of the Holy Spirit.

  1667. So scripture

  1668. connects the work

  1669. of the spirit

  1670. with water.

  1671. So I think

  1672. we must ultimately

  1673. see the water

  1674. of baptism

  1675. as pointing

  1676. to the reality

  1677. of spiritual renewal

  1678. by the spirit.

  1679. And a second point

  1680. for anyone

  1681. inclined

  1682. for the view

  1683. of baptismal

  1684. regeneration

  1685. I think the Bible

  1686. clearly saves

  1687. clearly says

  1688. faith saves us.

  1689. Ephesians 2.8

  1690. By faith

  1691. you have been saved.

  1692. So if baptism

  1693. regeneration

  1694. were true

  1695. what saves us?

  1696. Is it faith

  1697. or is it

  1698. the waters

  1699. of baptism?

  1700. And of course

  1701. one can have faith

  1702. before being baptized.

  1703. So I think

  1704. baptism should

  1705. best be understood

  1706. as an outward

  1707. event that

  1708. depicts an

  1709. internal reality

  1710. where we are

  1711. already united

  1712. with Christ

  1713. in his burial

  1714. and in his resurrection.

  1715. So you see

  1716. how typology

  1717. based arguments

  1718. become important

  1719. and in fact

  1720. you can go

  1721. off the rails

  1722. with typology.

  1723. The Catholic Church

  1724. will use a lot

  1725. of typological

  1726. arguments

  1727. to argue

  1728. for the supremacy

  1729. of the Pope

  1730. for baptismal

  1731. regeneration

  1732. so it's important

  1733. that we understand

  1734. how they're

  1735. kind of constructing

  1736. these arguments

  1737. and you know

  1738. it can get

  1739. off the tracks

  1740. if we're not careful.

  1741. So what are we

  1742. meant to see

  1743. getting back

  1744. to Exodus

  1745. what are we

  1746. meant to see

  1747. by the intertwining

  1748. of the theme

  1749. of the Exodus

  1750. and creation?

  1751. So in the Exodus

  1752. we're meant to see

  1753. that through God's

  1754. salvation in the Exodus

  1755. God means to make

  1756. the new creation.

  1757. The pattern is established.

  1758. Salvation in the Exodus

1759. will lead to the new creation.

  1760. So after the people

  1761. are saved

  1762. the Lord commanded

  1763. the people

  1764. to construct a tabernacle

  1765. showing that God

  1766. is now beginning

1767. to dwell with his people again.

  1768. Not face to face

  1769. but in a tent.

  1770. So the people

  1771. are entering

  1772. into a new Eden.

  1773. A new Eden.

  1774. The land of Canaan

1775. would be a new Eden.

  1776. So the song

  1777. of the sea

  1778. that Israel sings

  1779. after being rescued

  1780. shows this.

1781. The song of the sea

1782. is like a national anthem

  1783. written at the birth

  1784. of a nation.

  1785. This was Israel's

  1786. national anthem

  1787. they would sing.

  1788. And the Israelites

  1789. sing about how

  1790. Yahweh rescued them

  1791. from slavery

  1792. will lead them

  1793. through the desert

  1794. and into the land

  1795. of Canaan.

  1796. And God

  1797. will plant Israel

  1798. on his own mountain.

  1799. The place

  1800. O Lord

  1801. which you have made

  1802. for your abode.

  1803. So Ezekiel 28

  1804. will pick up

  1805. on this language

  1806. to describe

  1807. the Garden of Eden.

  1808. In the Exodus

  1809. Yahweh

  1810. would lead Israel

  1811. into a new Eden.

  1812. And

  1813. the prophets

  1814. Isaiah will pick up

  1815. on Exodus 15

  1816. as well

  1817. to show the promise

  1818. of Exodus 15

  1819. was not fully realized

  1820. once they were exiled.

  1821. The prophets

  1822. used the language

  1823. this language

  1824. now

  1825. to describe

  1826. a second Exodus

  1827. that would need

  1828. to happen.

  1829. So

  1830. we'll get into that.

  1831. That's just a preview

1832. of what's going to happen.

  1833. But the Exodus

  1834. is the meaning

  1835. in the new creation

  1836. would be the end,

  1837. God's goal.

  1838. In the new creation

  1839. God

  1840. with his people

  1841. would be

  1842. there would be

  1843. an entirely new humanity

  1844. in the garden

1845. in the land of Canaan.

  1846. God

  1847. leads the Israelites

  1848. to Mount Sinai

  1849. where God

  1850. gives the people

  1851. a set of laws

  1852. to live

1853. by in the land of Canaan.

  1854. The law

  1855. was like a family

  1856. code

  1857. as God's

  1858. new creation.

  1859. So if you flip

  1860. the Deuteronomy

  1861. it's amazing.

  1862. Right before

  1863. Moses gives

  1864. the Ten Commandments

  1865. he recounts

  1866. the Exodus.

  1867. I am the Lord

  1868. your God

  1869. who brought you

1870. up out of the land

  1871. of Egypt

  1872. out of the house

  1873. of slavery

  1874. therefore

  1875. live this way.

  1876. I have saved you

  1877. and I'll be a people

  1878. who obey my commandments.

  1879. So in the Bible

  1880. salvation

  1881. always comes

  1882. before obedience

  1883. or the indicatives

  1884. come before

  1885. the imperatives.

  1886. So it's amazing

1887. to see how the Exodus

  1888. frames how Israel

  1889. would live

1890. in the land of Canaan.

  1891. They would be

  1892. a kingdom of priests

  1893. and a holy nation

  1894. because the God

  1895. who saved them

  1896. was holy.

1897. And in this new creation

  1898. there would be

  1899. a new people

  1900. meant to live

  1901. under God

  1902. and his word.

  1903. God is remaking

  1904. what was lost

  1905. in the garden.

1906. So even as the Jews

  1907. looked back

  1908. at God's salvation

  1909. in the Exodus

  1910. it pointed forward

  1911. to an implied promise

  1912. of a new creation

  1913. a new humanity

  1914. God would create

  1915. where the people

  1916. are dwelling

  1917. with God once again.

  1918. But as we talked

  1919. about last week

  1920. there's a defect

  1921. in the laws

  1922. at Mount Sinai

  1923. or the Mosaic Covenant.

  1924. God gave the people

1925. a set of moral rules

  1926. as God's covenant people

  1927. but not the power

  1928. to obey those rules.

  1929. So most Israelites

  1930. left Egypt unsaved

  1931. physically delivered

  1932. from slavery

  1933. but not spiritually.

  1934. Spiritually they were

  1935. still enslaved to sin.

  1936. And God would need

1937. to do a supernatural work

  1938. in the people's hearts

  1939. to bring this about.

1940. To truly be a new humanity

1941. God would need to give us

  1942. new spiritual life.

  1943. Deuteronomy chapter 30

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  1944. The Lord your God

  1945. must circumcise your hearts

  1946. and the hearts

  1947. of your descendants

1948. to love the Lord your God

  1949. with all your heart

  1950. and all your soul

1951. so that you may live.

1952. To truly be a new creation

  1953. the people would need

  1954. to experience conversion

  1955. a sovereign work

  1956. of the Holy Spirit

1957. or as Jesus would say

  1958. in John 3

  1959. to see the kingdom

1960. you must be born again

  1961. from above.

1962. So we see the pattern

  1963. is established

  1964. Exodus

  1965. new creation

1966. and the rest of Israel's history

  1967. is marked by

  1968. repeated disobedience

  1969. and a refusal

1970. to do the will of the Lord.

  1971. Israel desperately needed

  1972. sin to be forgiven

1973. for God to give him

  1974. a new heart

  1975. and without conversion

  1976. the promise

  1977. the promise

  1978. to Abraham

  1979. to be a blessing

  1980. to the nations

  1981. would never be theirs.

1982. So now we're going to look

  1983. at the second Exodus.

  1984. The second Exodus.

1985. Because of the continued rebellion

  1986. God exiled the people

  1987. from the promised land.

  1988. The old saying

  1989. history doesn't repeat itself

  1990. but it often rhymes.

  1991. Like Adam

  1992. was exiled

  1993. from the garden

  1994. because of his disobedience

  1995. the Israelites

  1996. were again

  1997. exiled from the land

  1998. because of their disobedience.

  1999. The glory of God

  2000. left the temple.

  2001. Their people now

  2002. were in darkness.

  2003. They were in darkness.

  2004. But in the darkness

  2005. of the exile

  2006. the prophets

  2007. began to prophesy

  2008. about a second Exodus

2009. that would need to happen

  2010. that would happen.

  2011. In the future

  2012. God was going

  2013. to do something

  2014. to redeem his people.

  2015. A second Exodus

  2016. where God

  2017. would lead his people

  2018. into an extraordinary

  2019. new Jerusalem.

  2020. A new heavens

  2021. and a new earth.

  2022. So during the exile

  2023. the people

  2024. we would say

2025. wrote with an eschatological hope.

  2026. That just means

2027. God was going to do something

  2028. in the future

  2029. to redeem his people.

  2030. And the prophets

  2031. told God's people

  2032. that there

  2033. would be a Messiah

  2034. like Moses

  2035. who would lead

  2036. another Exodus.

  2037. Listen to Isaiah 11

    Isaiah 11:10–12

  2038. verses 10 to 12.

  2039. In that day

  2040. the root of Jesse

  2041. who shall stand

  2042. as a signal

  2043. for the peoples

  2044. of him

  2045. shall the nations inquire

  2046. and his resting place

  2047. shall be glorious.

  2048. In that day

  2049. the Lord

  2050. will extend his hand

  2051. yet a second time

  2052. to recover

  2053. the remnant

  2054. the remains

  2055. of his people

  2056. from Assyria

  2057. from Egypt

  2058. from Pathros

  2059. from Cush

  2060. from Elam

  2061. from Shinar

  2062. from Hamath

  2063. and from the coastlands

  2064. of the sea.

  2065. He will raise

  2066. a signal

  2067. for the nations

  2068. and he will

  2069. assemble

  2070. the banished

  2071. of Israel

  2072. and gather

  2073. the dispersed

  2074. of Judah

  2075. from the four corners

  2076. of the earth.

  2077. So the prophets

  2078. were telling people

2079. there would be a Messiah

  2080. like Moses

  2081. who would lead

  2082. another Exodus.

  2083. Something

  2084. will shoot out

  2085. of the stump

  2086. of Jesse.

  2087. And so the image

  2088. the prophets use

  2089. is of a tree

  2090. that is devastated

  2091. but only a stump

  2092. remains.

  2093. David's line

  2094. will decline

  2095. to the brink

  2096. of extermination

2097. but out of that stump

  2098. will come a king

  2099. who will lead

  2100. to second Exodus

  2101. where he saves

  2102. his people

  2103. not just from Egypt

2104. but from the four corners

  2105. of the earth.

2106. So now at one level

  2107. called the first

  2108. order fulfillment

  2109. the second Exodus

  2110. was fulfilled

  2111. when the people

  2112. returned from exile

  2113. and rebuilt

  2114. the temple

  2115. in Ezra and Nehemiah.

  2116. But in another horizon

  2117. the prophets

  2118. foresaw another Exodus

  2119. that would eclipse

  2120. even the Exodus

  2121. from Egypt.

  2122. So listen to what

  2123. Isaiah says

  2124. immediately before

  2125. the passage

  2126. in this one

  2127. in Isaiah chapter 11.

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  2128. There shall come forth

  2129. a shoot

  2130. from the stump

  2131. of Jesse

  2132. and a branch

  2133. from his roots

  2134. shall bear fruit.

  2135. The spirit

  2136. of the Lord

  2137. shall rest

  2138. upon him

  2139. the spirit

  2140. of wisdom

  2141. and understanding

  2142. the spirit

  2143. of counsel

  2144. and might

  2145. the spirit

  2146. of knowledge

  2147. and the fear

  2148. of the Lord.

  2149. The wolf

  2150. shall dwell

  2151. with the lamb

  2152. and the leopard

  2153. shall lie down

  2154. with the young goat

  2155. and the calf

  2156. and the lion

  2157. and the fattened calf

  2158. together

  2159. and a little child

  2160. shall lead them

  2161. the cow

  2162. and the bear

  2163. shall graze

  2164. their young

  2165. shall lie down

  2166. together

  2167. and the lion

  2168. shall eat straw

  2169. like the ox

  2170. the nursing child

  2171. shall play over

  2172. the hole

  2173. of the cobra

  2174. and the weaned

  2175. child shall put

  2176. his hand

  2177. on the adder's den

  2178. they shall not hurt

  2179. or destroy

2180. in all my holy mountain

  2181. for the earth

  2182. shall be as full

  2183. of the knowledge

  2184. of the Lord

  2185. as the waters

  2186. cover the sea.

  2187. So we see

  2188. the Messiah

  2189. from David's line

  2190. will not only

  2191. save his people

  2192. in the second exodus

  2193. that eclipses

  2194. the first one

  2195. but will bring about

  2196. the new creation

  2197. even the animals

  2198. would be healed

  2199. in the new creation.

  2200. Isaiah chapter 35

    Isaiah 35 chapter mention

  2201. talks about

  2202. in that day

  2203. God will open

2204. the eyes of the blind

  2205. and unstop the ears

  2206. of the deaf.

  2207. Isaiah is using

  2208. different images

  2209. and themes

  2210. to describe

  2211. the same reality.

  2212. Through the Messiah

  2213. God will save

  2214. his people

  2215. in another exodus

  2216. and he will bring

  2217. about the new creation.

  2218. So this is prophecy.

  2219. Right?

  2220. And we'll see

  2221. in the New Testament

  2222. Jesus too

  2223. saves his people

  2224. through an exodus.

  2225. Jesus is the promised

  2226. Messiah

  2227. who would deliver

  2228. his people

  2229. from a slave master

  2230. worse than the Egyptians.

  2231. As the story

  2232. unfolds

  2233. Christ will accomplish

  2234. that second exodus

  2235. and rescue his people

  2236. from sin and judgment

  2237. and bring the church

  2238. into the promised land

  2239. of rest.

  2240. So that promise

  2241. is fulfilled

2242. in and through the church.

  2243. But we should notice

  2244. something here.

2245. And how can we say

  2246. the new creation

  2247. arrives when Christ arrives

  2248. if these promises

  2249. of restored creation

  2250. haven't been fully realized?

  2251. So reading Isaiah

  2252. is often puzzling

  2253. because Isaiah

  2254. is often prophesying

  2255. about heaven,

  2256. the new heavens,

  2257. the new earth,

  2258. and the arrival

  2259. of the Messiah

  2260. at the same time

  2261. in the same sentence.

  2262. So you could spend

  2263. 30 years in Isaiah

2264. and you're going to have

  2265. more questions about it.

  2266. Someone described it.

  2267. It's like trying

  2268. to explain to someone

  2269. who's never seen

  2270. a snow leopard

  2271. what a snow leopard

  2272. looks like.

  2273. Isaiah is going

  2274. all over the place

  2275. but it's a profound book.

  2276. And you could spend

  2277. 30 years in Isaiah

  2278. but we don't have

  2279. that amount of time

  2280. right now.

  2281. So someone wants

  2282. to explain it

  2283. this way to me.

  2284. The prophets

  2285. looked at the future

2286. the way we might look

  2287. at a mountain range.

  2288. There are distant mountains

  2289. and nearer mountains

  2290. but they all look

  2291. like one mountain range.

  2292. Isaiah saw only

  2293. one mountain range

  2294. describing the events

  2295. of the coming

  2296. of the Messiah

2297. but as the story unfolds

  2298. we know that

  2299. part of the prophecy

  2300. is fulfilled

  2301. in Jesus' first coming

  2302. and the rest

  2303. is fulfilled

  2304. in Jesus' second coming

  2305. when he consummates

  2306. the kingdom

  2307. and renews

  2308. the entire earth.

  2309. The Messiah

  2310. would set us free

  2311. and creation free

  2312. from its bondage

  2313. of decay and corruption.

2314. So as the Old Testament

  2315. closes

  2316. it does so

  2317. with the minor prophets

2318. and a note of anticipation

  2319. about the Messiah

  2320. in the second Exodus

  2321. that would renew

  2322. creation itself

  2323. and that would bring

  2324. the people

  2325. to dwell with God

  2326. once again.

2327. So in the New Testament

  2328. the true redemption

  2329. to which the Exodus

  2330. pointed toward

  2331. comes.

  2332. So the New Testament

  2333. opens up

2334. on a note of fulfillment.

  2335. When Jesus arrives

  2336. it doesn't take long

  2337. for the New Testament

  2338. writers to start

  2339. picking up on these

  2340. themes of an Exodus.

  2341. So in Matthew 2

    Matthew 2:13–15

  2342. verses 13 to 15

  2343. Jesus is transported

  2344. down to Egypt

  2345. by his mother

  2346. and Joseph

  2347. escaping the wrath

  2348. of Herod

  2349. and eventually

  2350. he returns

  2351. from Egypt.

  2352. After this

  2353. we are told

  2354. fulfills the words

  2355. out of Egypt

  2356. I call my son.

  2357. Referring to Hosea

  2358. verse 11

  2359. chapter 11

  2360. verse 1.

  2361. So the first

  2362. reference

  2363. in Hosea

  2364. there is clearly

  2365. to Israel

  2366. looking backward.

  2367. Exodus 4

  2368. 22

  2369. God says

  2370. during the Exodus

  2371. Israel is my

  2372. firstborn son

2373. and I say to you

  2374. let my son go

2375. that he may serve me.

  2376. Centuries later

  2377. Hosea records

  2378. God's words

  2379. out of Egypt

  2380. I called my son

  2381. looking back

  2382. on the event.

  2383. So at this point

  2384. it's confusing

  2385. right?

  2386. Many might feel

  2387. the New Testament

  2388. writers are

  2389. misquoting the

  2390. Old Testament.

  2391. Hosea

  2392. clearly is referring

  2393. back to the Exodus

  2394. not looking forward

  2395. to Mary's

  2396. and Joseph's

  2397. flight from Egypt.

  2398. So where is

  2399. Matthew getting

  2400. this from?

  2401. So this

  2402. we would say

  2403. is a biblical

  2404. theological reading

  2405. of the scripture.

  2406. Matthew is doing

  2407. biblical theology

  2408. when he quotes

  2409. and he's a profound

  2410. thinker

  2411. and the more we

  2412. study the New Testament

  2413. and see the way

  2414. the authors

  2415. understood the Old Testament

  2416. and it really shows

  2417. that they were inspired

  2418. by the Spirit

  2419. to record this

  2420. for us.

  2421. Matthew is picking up

  2422. on a stream

  2423. of biblical theology

  2424. about the theme

  2425. of the Exodus

  2426. and the implied promise

  2427. that God would

  2428. establish his people

  2429. into the new garden

  2430. as his new creation.

  2431. The Exodus

  2432. had not been successful

  2433. in establishing

  2434. the new creation

  2435. and because the people

  2436. left spiritually unchanged

  2437. a greater Exodus

  2438. needed to come

  2439. to truly free

  2440. the people

  2441. out of slavery

  2442. the slavery

  2443. within the heart.

  2444. So Jesus

  2445. in the Gospels

  2446. in Matthew

  2447. is the true Israel

  2448. because he's

2449. the true son of God.

  2450. What Israel

  2451. was meant to be

  2452. Jesus is.

  2453. Israel is the shadow

  2454. the type

  2455. Jesus is the fulfillment

  2456. the anti-type.

  2457. So right away

  2458. in Matthew

  2459. Jesus begins

  2460. to retrace

  2461. Israel's footsteps

  2462. footsteps

  2463. which is strange

  2464. isn't it?

  2465. But it's telling us

  2466. it's the second Exodus

  2467. that's starting

  2468. during his ministry.

  2469. So remember

  2470. our principles

  2471. for typology

  2472. are historical correspondence

  2473. and the intensifying

  2474. of the pattern.

  2475. In Matthew 4

  2476. Jesus is led

  2477. into the desert

  2478. by the Spirit

  2479. to be tempted

  2480. by Satan.

  2481. He's retracing

  2482. the footsteps.

  2483. This is a far

  2484. more intense

  2485. temptation

  2486. than Israel

  2487. ever faced.

  2488. Jesus quotes

  2489. Deuteronomy

  2490. he says

  2491. man shall not live

  2492. by bread alone

  2493. but by every word

  2494. that comes

2495. from the mouth of God.

  2496. Israel heard

  2497. these words

  2498. but valued bread

  2499. over the words

  2500. of God

  2501. and the rulers.

  2502. But Jesus

  2503. the true Israel

  2504. refuses bread

  2505. from Satan

  2506. and instead

  2507. worships God alone.

  2508. That must have been

  2509. the hardest thing

  2510. for Jesus

  2511. to have said no.

  2512. Satan said

  2513. here's a crown

  2514. but no cross.

  2515. Just worship

  2516. me.

  2517. Bow down

  2518. and worship

  2519. me Jesus.

  2520. I'll give you

  2521. a crown

  2522. but you don't

  2523. have to go

  2524. to the cross.

  2525. Why is Jesus

  2526. doing this?

  2527. Why is he going

  2528. into the desert

  2529. to be tempted?

  2530. Because he's

  2531. beginning the second

  2532. exodus.

  2533. Or in Luke 9

  2534. at the scene

  2535. of the transfiguration

  2536. Luke uses

  2537. the word exodus

  2538. when describing

  2539. Jesus departing

  2540. to Jerusalem.

  2541. Luke is telling

  2542. us that Christ

  2543. has come to bring

  2544. the second exodus

  2545. by going

  2546. to Jerusalem.

  2547. Something's going

  2548. to happen

  2549. in Jerusalem.

  2550. Jesus is heading

  2551. there.

  2552. The second exodus

  2553. the great event

  2554. of salvation

  2555. will happen

  2556. in Jerusalem.

  2557. So as D.A. Carson

  2558. said

  2559. everything that is

  2560. said and done

  2561. all the parables

  2562. all the miracles

  2563. everything that is

  2564. said and done

  2565. is under the

  2566. impending

  2567. anticipated exodus.

  2568. His travel to

  2569. Jerusalem

  2570. means he's

  2571. heading for the

  2572. cross

  2573. the resurrection

  2574. and the ascension.

  2575. His exodus

  2576. as the true

  2577. Israel

  2578. taking his

  2579. people

  2580. as it were

  2581. in triumphant

  2582. array into

  2583. the new heaven

  2584. and the new

  2585. earth.

  2586. So on the way

  2587. toward Jerusalem

  2588. we see a

  2589. glimmer

  2590. it's a glimmer

  2591. of that new

  2592. creation that

  2593. God promised

  2594. through the

  2595. second exodus

  2596. through Jesus

  2597. healing ministry.

  2598. The beginning

  2599. signs of the

  2600. new creation

  2601. dimension in

  2602. the second

  2603. exodus

  2604. were shown

  2605. when Jesus

  2606. healed the

  2607. people.

  2608. Jesus went

  2609. through all

  2610. the cities

  2611. and villages

  2612. teaching in

  2613. their synagogues

  2614. and proclaiming

  2615. the gospel

  2616. of the kingdom

  2617. and healing

  2618. every disease

  2619. and every

  2620. affliction.

  2621. And we see

  2622. the same

  2623. connection to

  2624. the ministry

  2625. of the twelve

  2626. disciples.

  2627. Jesus instructs

  2628. them proclaim

  2629. as you go

  2630. saying the

  2631. kingdom of

  2632. heaven is at

  2633. hand.

  2634. Heal the

  2635. sick,

  2636. raise the

  2637. dead,

  2638. cleanse

  2639. leopards,

  2640. cast out

  2641. demons.

  2642. So the

  2643. new creation

  2644. is starting

  2645. in Jesus

  2646. coming.

  2647. But it is

  2648. not our own

  2649. efforts that

  2650. bring us into

  2651. the new

  2652. creation.

  2653. But it is

  2654. those that

  2655. Jesus says

  2656. are those

  2657. who are

  2658. raised from

  2659. death who

  2660. enjoy life.

  2661. Must be

  2662. raised from

  2663. the dead.

  2664. And how

  2665. does Jesus,

  2666. how does

  2667. the new

  2668. creation

  2669. come?

  2670. What's the

  2671. means by

  2672. which Jesus

  2673. brings about

  2674. the new

  2675. creation?

  2676. Well, it's

  2677. his word,

  2678. isn't it?

  2679. That scene

  2680. in Ezekiel

  2681. where God

  2682. tells Ezekiel,

  2683. prophesy out of

  2684. these dry,

  2685. dead bones.

  2686. And as he

  2687. prophesies,

  2688. as he preaches,

  2689. new life

  2690. starts coming

  2691. to these

  2692. dead bones.

  2693. And Jesus,

  2694. he says,

  2695. Lazarus,

  2696. come out of

  2697. that tomb.

  2698. Why did

  2699. Jesus have

  2700. to use

  2701. his words

  2702. to raise

  2703. Lazarus

  2704. from death

  2705. to life?

  2706. Well, it's

  2707. the pattern

  2708. of God

  2709. brings about

  2710. the new

  2711. creation

  2712. through the

  2713. proclamation

  2714. of his

  2715. word.

  2716. So Matthew

  2717. describes the

  2718. kingdom of

  2719. God that we

  2720. talked about

  2721. last week,

  2722. but John

  2723. is describing

  2724. the new

  2725. creation that

  2726. Christ brings.

  2727. So there's

  2728. different ways

  2729. of talking

  2730. about this

  2731. new thing

  2732. God is

  2733. doing.

  2734. So Jesus

  2735. would say

  2736. in John

  2737. 14,

  2738. I am the

  2739. way and

  2740. the truth

  2741. and the

  2742. life.

  2743. No one

  2744. will come

  2745. to the

  2746. Father

  2747. except

  2748. through me.

  2749. My sheep

  2750. hear my

  2751. voice and

  2752. I know

  2753. them.

  2754. And they

  2755. follow me

  2756. and I

  2757. give on

  2758. to them

  2759. eternal

  2760. life and

  2761. they shall

  2762. never

  2763. perish.

  2764. So now

  2765. every great

  2766. story has

  2767. an amazing

  2768. unexpected

  2769. plot twist

  2770. that no

  2771. one expected.

  2772. So one

  2773. would expect

  2774. Jesus to

  2775. sit again

  2776. on the

  2777. throne of

  2778. David,

  2779. take his

  2780. place as

  2781. king,

  2782. and begin

  2783. to rule

  2784. his subjects

  2785. wisely and

  2786. be that

  2787. king everyone

  2788. hoped for.

  2789. So if I

  2790. were the

  2791. author of

  2792. the story,

  2793. that's how

  2794. I'd write

  2795. it.

  2796. But that

  2797. doesn't

  2798. happen,

  2799. does it?

  2800. Instead,

  2801. the author

  2802. of history,

  2803. Jesus,

  2804. triumphantly

  2805. enters Jerusalem

  2806. on a donkey,

  2807. but instead

  2808. of being crowned

  2809. as a king,

  2810. he is

  2811. crucified on

  2812. a Roman

  2813. cross.

  2814. But Jesus

  2815. said he

  2816. lays his

  2817. life down

  2818. for his

  2819. sheep.

  2820. The first

  2821. Adam in

  2822. the garden

  2823. threw his

  2824. bride under

  2825. the bus

  2826. the first

  2827. chance he

  2828. got,

  2829. saying,

  2830. it was a

  2831. woman you

  2832. gave me,

  2833. God.

  2834. But Christ,

  2835. the second

  2836. Adam,

  2837. he climbs

  2838. the cross

  2839. to die

  2840. for the

  2841. bride,

  2842. his bride,

  2843. the church.

  2844. No one

  2845. is expecting

  2846. this to

  2847. happen.

  2848. No one

  2849. is expecting

  2850. the king

  2851. to be

  2852. crucified.

  2853. And the

  2854. murderer

  2855. Barabbas

  2856. was set

  2857. free,

  2858. and the

  2859. righteous

  2860. king

  2861. was condemned

  2862. as a murderer.

  2863. The Holy

  2864. One of Israel,

  2865. the thrice

  2866. Holy One,

  2867. is condemned

  2868. as a murderer.

  2869. The serpent

  2870. has won

  2871. that ancient

  2872. conflict.

  2873. He's finally

  2874. and forever

  2875. destroyed that

  2876. promised male

  2877. descendant of

  2878. the offspring

  2879. of Eve.

  2880. But thank God

  2881. that's not where

  2882. the story ends.

  2883. So remember the

  2884. opening chapters

  2885. of Genesis.

  2886. The Lord,

  2887. not Satan,

  2888. will have the

  2889. final victory.

  2890. Where does

  2891. the victory come?

  2892. How does

  2893. Christ crush

  2894. the serpent

  2895. finally?

  2896. Well,

  2897. that victory

  2898. is the

  2899. resurrection

  2900. from the

  2901. dead,

  2902. isn't it?

  2903. It's interesting

  2904. that God

  2905. used the

  2906. serpent to

  2907. reverse the

  2908. devastation the

  2909. serpent helped

  2910. cause in the

  2911. first place.

  2912. It's the great

  2913. reversal in the

  2914. story.

  2915. In the second

  2916. Exodus,

  2917. the great act

  2918. of salvation

  2919. was accomplished

  2920. at Calvary.

  2921. And now the

  2922. new creation

  2923. has arrived

  2924. when Jesus

  2925. is resurrected

  2926. from the

  2927. dead.

  2928. The Lamb

  2929. of God

  2930. was slain,

  2931. but praise God

  2932. the Lamb

  2933. of God

  2934. was raised

  2935. again.

  2936. The Exodus

  2937. is God's

  2938. great act

  2939. of salvation

  2940. that leads

  2941. to the

  2942. new creation.

  2943. And the

  2944. cross is

  2945. what the

  2946. Exodus

  2947. narrative

  2948. points to.

  2949. So 1 Corinthians

  2950. 15 says this,

  2951. For as in

  2952. Adam all

  2953. die,

  2954. so also in

  2955. Christ shall

  2956. all be made

  2957. alive,

  2958. be each in

  2959. his own

  2960. order,

  2961. Christ the

  2962. firstfruits.

  2963. Then it is

  2964. coming those

  2965. who belong to

  2966. Christ.

  2967. Christ is the

  2968. firstfruits,

  2969. the beginning

  2970. of the harvest

  2971. season where

  2972. many come

  2973. to life.

  2974. If anyone

  2975. is in

  2976. Christ,

  2977. he is a

  2978. new creation,

  2979. she is a

  2980. new creation.

  2981. So there's

  2982. an already

  2983. but not yet

  2984. period to

  2985. the dimension

  2986. of this

  2987. new creation.

  2988. Jesus'

  2989. resurrection

  2990. demonstrates

  2991. that even

  2992. though the

  2993. age to come

  2994. has not

  2995. fully arrived,

  2996. the new

  2997. creation is

  2998. here right

  2999. now.

  3000. Christians

  3001. in the

  3002. church are

  3003. that new

  3004. creation.

  3005. And that

  3006. new creation,

  3007. the promised

  3008. circumcision of

  3009. the heart

  3010. becomes a

  3011. reality.

  3012. God has

  3013. created a

  3014. new humanity

  3015. creation.

  3016. The church

  3017. is meant to

  3018. be an

  3019. outpost of

  3020. the new

  3021. creation people

  3022. of God in

  3023. the midst of

  3024. the old

  3025. creation.

  3026. Sunday is the

  3027. first day of

  3028. the week because

  3029. it's the first

  3030. day of a new

  3031. creation.

  3032. We gather on

  3033. Sundays as a

  3034. church and we

  3035. have a dress

  3036. rehearsal of what

  3037. we'll be doing

  3038. forever in

  3039. eternity, giving

  3040. thanks and

  3041. praise to God.

  3042. And as we live

  3043. our lives the

  3044. rest of the week

  3045. as new creation

  3046. in the midst of

  3047. the old creation.

  3048. So we come here

  3049. the first day of

  3050. the week reminded

  3051. about God's new

  3052. creation and then

  3053. we go out and

  3054. live as new

  3055. creations in the

  3056. old.

  3057. Now we can

  3058. both overestimate

  3059. and underestimate

  3060. the new creation

  3061. in us.

  3062. So we need to

  3063. read Romans 7

  3064. and 8 to

  3065. balance our

  3066. understanding about

  3067. the new creation

  3068. in us right

  3069. now.

  3070. But Christ has

  3071. promised us

  3072. eternal life in

  3073. the new creation.

  3074. The new creation

  3075. will be perfected.

  3076. God has broke the

  3077. power of sin and

  3078. one day he will

  3079. wipe away the

  3080. very presence of

  3081. sin.

  3082. And that's where

  3083. Revelation 21

  3084. ends.

  3085. So my favorite

  3086. book besides the

  3087. Bible.

  3088. So in John Bunyan's

  3089. classic Pilgrim's

  3090. Progress, Christian

  3091. and his companion

  3092. Hopeful approached

  3093. the celestial city.

  3094. Both had looked to

  3095. the Son of Man

  3096. lifted up on a

  3097. cross and saw

  3098. him by faith like

  3099. Israel gazing to

  3100. Moses' serpent lifted

  3101. up in the wilderness.

  3102. The burdens on their

  3103. backs came sliding

  3104. off and fell away

  3105. forever as they

  3106. gained the right

  3107. into the celestial

  3108. city.

3109. So at the end of

  3110. his journey, as

  3111. Christian drew near

  3112. to that city, the

  3113. angels came and

  3114. told him, you are

  3115. going now to the

  3116. paradise of God

  3117. wherein you shall

  3118. see the tree of

3119. life and eat of the

  3120. never fading fruits

  3121. thereof.

  3122. You shall have

  3123. white robes given

  3124. you and your walk

  3125. and talk shall be

  3126. every day with the

  3127. king, even all the

  3128. days of eternity.

  3129. The men then asked,

3130. what must we do in

  3131. this holy place?

  3132. To whom it was

  3133. answered, you must

  3134. there receive the

  3135. comforts of all your

3136. toil and have joy for

  3137. all your sorrow.

3138. You must reap what you

  3139. have sown, even the

  3140. fruit of all your

  3141. prayers and tears and

  3142. sufferings for the

  3143. king by the way.

  3144. In that place, you

  3145. must wear crowns of

  3146. gold and enjoy the

  3147. perpetual sight and

  3148. vision of the Holy

  3149. One.

  3150. For there you shall

3151. see him as he is.

  3152. There also you shall

  3153. serve him continually

  3154. with praise, with

  3155. shouting and

  3156. thanksgiving, whom

  3157. you desire to serve

  3158. in the world, though

  3159. with much difficulty

  3160. because of the

  3161. infirmity of your

  3162. flesh.

  3163. There your eyes shall

  3164. be delighted with

  3165. seeing, and your

  3166. ears with hearing the

  3167. pleasant voice of the

  3168. Mighty One.

  3169. There you shall enjoy

  3170. your friends again

  3171. that are gone there

  3172. before you.

  3173. And so Bunyan

  3174. describes them going

  3175. into this heavenly

  3176. city through the

  3177. gates.

  3178. And lo, as they

  3179. entered, they were

  3180. transfigured, and they

  3181. had clothing put on

  3182. that shone like gold.

3183. All the bells in the

  3184. city rang again for

3185. joy, and it was said

  3186. unto them, enter into

3187. the joy of your Lord.

  3188. I love that.

  3189. There, as John

3190. Owen said, as a man

  3191. sees his neighbor face

3192. to face, so shall we

3193. see the Lord Christ in

  3194. his glory.

  3195. Isn't that glorious?

  3196. The second creation is

  3197. better than the first.

  3198. It's restored.

  3199. But in the second

  3200. creation, we will see

  3201. the glory of Christ

  3202. there.

3203. And the land will be

3204. all the glory in that

  3205. new creation.

  3206. Amen.

  3207. So God is remaking

  3208. a perfect creation,

  3209. making it even better

  3210. in the new creation.

3211. So to close, I want us

3212. to sing a song that

3213. we all know and love,

  3214. And Can It Be.

3215. So this is a song

  3216. recognizing, recognizes

  3217. how God brought us

3218. from death to new life.

3219. So once again, I'll start,

3220. and join me in singing,

  3221. please.

3222. And can it be that I should

3223. gain an interest in the Savior's blood?

3224. Died he for me, who caused his pain?

3225. For me, who in to death pursue?

3226. Amazing love, how can it be?

3227. That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

3228. Amazing love, how can it be?

3229. That thou, my God, should die for me?

3230. He left his Father's throne above,

3231. so free, so infinite his grace.

3232. Empty himself of all but love,

3233. And bled for Adam's helpless race.

3234. Tis mercy all immense and free,

3235. For all my God, he found out me.

3236. Tis amazing love, how can it be?

3237. That thou, my God, should die for me?

3238. Long my imprisoned spirit lay,

3239. Fast bound in sin and nature's night.

  3240. Thine I diffused a quickening ray,

3241. I woke the dungeon flamed with light.

3242. My chains fell off, my heart was free.

3243. I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

3244. My chains fell off, my heart was free.

3245. I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

  3246. Verse 5.

3247. No condemnation now I dread,

3248. Jesus and all in him is mine.

3249. Alive in him, my living hand,

3250. And clothed in righteousness divine.

3251. Bold I approached the eternal throne,

3252. And claimed the crown through Christ my own.

  3253. Amen.

  3254. Amen.

  3255. Let me pray.

3256. Father in heaven, Lord, we thank you for the great work of salvation accomplished for us once for all at Calvary.

3257. And that Jesus died for sins and now he sat down at your right hands.

3258. And his work has been perfected to those of us who trust in him forever.

  3259. And a sufficient sacrifice.

3260. Thank you for that truth, Lord.

3261. Help us to live into that today and the rest of this week.

  3262. In Jesus name.

  3263. Amen.

  3264. Amen.

  3265. All right.

3266. So we have about five, maybe ten minutes of questions.

3267. So this today, we did principles of biblical theology,

3268. Kingdom through the Covenants, creation, new creation,

3269. and the Lord willing, we'll have Nick Pesanti talk, walk us through God's people in the church,

3270. and then the theme of sacrifice.

  3271. So, that's the plan.

  3272. Any questions?

  3273. Matt.

3274. As we have things like Cain and,

  3275. evil being born,

3276. and then that doesn't work out well.

3277. The, you know, things go from bad to worse,

3278. and so God starts again with the flood.

3279. That doesn't end up, you know, producing the results on it.

3280. And so, you have a repeating pattern, a new start.

3281. From the viewpoint of biblical theology, you know, is there an idea of,

3282. well, yeah, we haven't reached the, you know, the new heaven and the new earth yet,

3283. but there's progress being made.

  3284. Hmm.

3285. So, as the storyline unfolds, is there more image bearers that are reflecting,

3286. following God as the king?

3287. Do we see progress in that manner?

  3288. Is that your question?

3289. Are we seeing progress in that image bearers are now following God more and more,

3290. versus what we saw in Genesis 1 through to 11?

  3291. In that sense?

3292. As individuals, you know, we see that happening, or as a group.

  3293. Okay.

3294. Like, in what ways is the church superior to the church?

  3295. Oh, I see.

  3296. But both.

  3297. Yeah.

  3298. Yeah, I see.

3299. Or, kind of like the judges.

  3300. Hmm.

3301. You know, the cycle continues, and there just seems to be no progress.

3302. So, it's the same old, same old.

3303. I think we have the spirit now in dwelling believers.

3304. In the Old Testament, I, people differ on this.

3305. I think the spirit dwelled in the temple, and people wanted to go to the temple.

3306. But now, we are many temples, we have the spirit indwelling us.

3307. So, in that respect, we are able to follow the Shema,

3308. love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

3309. Not perfectly, but we now have the spirit who is able to,

3310. we can keep the law of Christ, which is the law of love for him and neighbor.

3311. So, I think the church now is different than the old Israel.

3312. However, I do think there is a pattern where, you know,

3313. God has to revive his people again.

3314. There has to be, I mean, it happened in the Reformation.

3315. I think the gospel is going forth in power.

3316. And maybe it's because we don't see, the history books don't record for us,

3317. the faithful people who proclaim the gospel.

3318. But God does have to do a sort of reviving work again in his church.

3319. I think that that's the same way as in Israel.

3320. But I do think we now have, it is better than it was before.

3321. There are not only eight people in the entire world that are following God.

  3322. Amen.

  3323. Yeah.

  3324. So, God...

  3325. Yeah.

3326. I think a really, another through line in biblical theology that can be traced is remnant theology,

3327. where God always preserves his people.

3328. No matter how bad things seem to be.

  3329. Mm-hmm.

3330. Talking about the shoots from the stone.

3331. Every time God promises to keep the line going.

3332. And so that once we get to Paul, he's commissioning those who have the gospel after him,

3333. not because he thinks the gospel is going to die out.

3334. He's certain that he will.

3335. But that, again, the indignities come before the indignities.

3336. He's like, I want you to do these things.

3337. Just know that this is how God's life.

  3338. Yeah.

  3339. I agree.

  3340. I agree.

3341. And it's amazing in Hebrews 11 that the second half, we get all the, the hall of faith of Moses and Enoch and Abraham.

3342. But then it says, those were sawn in half.

3343. Like, we don't get their names.

3344. They're just Christians that have lived faithfully and died for the Lord.

3345. As we see, they were persecuted by the world, but also by faithless Israel.

3346. So there was that remnant in Israel, God's faithful.

3347. And then they were persecuted by even the people, the elders of Israel who were meant to lead Israel.

3348. They were the ones who were persecuted, the persecutors of God.

3349. And we see that thread line.

3350. The Pharisees now are killing the Creator.

  3351. Yeah.

3352. So God preserves a remnant for his people.

  3353. Matt.

  3354. Yeah.

  3355. Matt.

3356. And it just occurred to me as we were talking that you do have this narrowing down to Abraham.

3357. And then the promise that, you know, the victory would expand out to all nations.

3358. And that's the way in which the church is declaring the glory of God in a way that Israel did not.

3359. And then there's this narrowing down from, like, all of humanity.

  3360. Okay, Noah.

  3361. Okay, Abraham.

3362. Okay, Judah, the Davidic line.

  3363. Jesus.

  3364. Yeah.

3365. And now everyone in Jesus.

3366. And then just sort of explodes out there.

3367. Now the narrowing, when we talk about the narrowing, are we going back to the original story where, like, you know, the, you have evil and, you know, that comes out in the, you know, the, you know, in Genesis story.

  3368. Mm-hmm.

3369. Are the changes, a progression of the good line versus the evil line or is it more of an over time that more than evil converts to, you know, hopefully, you know, the good line?

3370. I, it's, so, it kind of goes back to what we talked about last week.

3371. So the promise that God made to Genesis 3.15 of a, provide an offspring of a savior is fulfilled, will be a descendant of Abraham.

3372. And now, and then we learn that, that descendant will be of the line of the house of David.

3373. And so God is, God is getting, he's promising a people and he's building a kingdom that will be truly a righteous nation.

3374. And once we get to David, once we get to Jesus, now that those promises of being an international blessing are now being fulfilled.

3375. So I would say there's, there was a remnant, like we're saying, between Genesis 3 to Jesus, that God has, God has saved the people in the midst of an unregenerate Israel.

3376. And now he's, he's fulfilled that through Christ.

3377. So I think there, I don't know how many, I can't quantify how many believers were in Israel at this time and that time.

3378. I think the Lord knows.

3379. But my question is, is the conversion from, just a, you're changing everybody, good and evil, or is it more of a more good people or good mind liberating?

3380. And then, do you answer what I'm saying?

  3381. Yeah, I...

3382. So the narrowing isn't about morality.

3383. It's, who is, who is God's people?

3384. I think, Nick, when you cover, like, the people of God in the church, I think that will kind of help play our lives.

  3385. Yeah.

  3386. Yeah.

3387. By Abraham, we're saved by faith.

  3388. Right.

3389. In Genesis 15, he believed the Lord and he accounted to him as righteousness.

3390. And every believer, from beginning to end, have been saved by faith.

3391. So it's faith in Yahweh.

3392. So I don't think the Lord, saved by morality here, and now we're saved by faith over here.

3393. So I think there's a continual way in which God relates to his people.

  3394. And we'll see that.

3395. But in terms of how many, I think now the church is universal.

3396. The universal church comprises of every tongue, tribe, and nation.

3397. In the Old Testament, the church, well, Israel was exclusively ethnic Israel with some Gentiles sprinkled in.

3398. But now that worldwide blessing has now come to pass through Christ.

3399. So we do live in that progressive revelation.

  3400. The light's brighter now.

3401. We can see that God is saving every nation.

3402. And he wants the Great Commission to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

3403. So we get to live in the privilege.

3404. I mean, 1 Peter says, like concerning the salvation, the angels long to see what we see now.

3405. It really is a privilege to be able to see Christ and what he's doing in the world.

3406. So they long to see what we see.

3407. Like we have the privilege of a fuller revelation.

3408. But once we get to heaven, you know, well, boom.

3409. Like we're going to see.

3410. We see dimly now, but we'll see clearly then.

  3411. All right.

  3412. Well, thank you all.

3413. I can just stop there.

3414. If you have any more questions, I'm happy to answer it.

  3415. So I don't...

  3416. Just...

  3417. But...
