  1. Take a moment to introduce our Sunday School teacher this morning, Nick.

  2. The Bible commands us to outdo one another in showing honor.

  3. So I want to introduce, but I also want to honor Nick.

  4. So Nick here is a deacon at Trinity. I've had the joy of knowing Nick for six years.

  5. And I'm really thankful for his mission.

  6. So I want to honor you, Nick, because, brother, I've seen Christ in you in the hope of glory.

  7. And I've watched you for years walk in integrity and courage, which we could use more of these days.

  8. I've seen you love your family and to love your neighbors.

  9. Like the time where you took it upon yourself to help your neighbors get back on the feet after the hurricane.

  10. Showing Christ's love to your neighbors.

  11. So, brother, I'm really thankful. I see Christ's likeness in your life.

  12. And it's instructing me in what it means to love others the way Christ has loved us.

  13. So I'm thankful, brother, and Nick is going to walk us through another theme of the Bible.

  14. All right.

  15. Thanks, brother.

  16. Well, praise God for all of that.

  17. It's definitely not on my own record.

  18. So, good morning, church.

  19. Good morning.

  20. So, I want to start today by giving you a word.

  21. I want you to think about the first thing that comes to mind when I say this word.

  22. Ready?

  23. Church.

  24. So, what comes to mind?

  25. Was it stained glass windows?

  26. Was it this church building?

  27. Was it people or a pastor?

  28. Or maybe it was a picture of the sanctuary with all the saints gathered together.

  29. How many of you thought of Adam and Eve in the garden?

  30. How many of you thought of the Israelites?

  31. How many of you thought of Christ's redemptive work on the cross?

  32. Or the unity of Jews and Gentiles?

  33. Or of God's people in heaven worshiping him?

  34. Remember what it is you thought of.

  35. We're going to come back to that at the end of this.

  36. What we want to do today is we want to look at God's people in the church through the lens of biblical theology.

  37. We're going to look at the biblical story from creation to the fall, through the redemption story, all the way to the restoration of all things.

  38. We're going to see how the Bible portrays a unified message of God's people and the church with Christ at the center of it.

  39. So, as we dive into our study today, let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  40. Heavenly Father, we thank you for this day that you've given us.

  41. We thank you for this time that we can open up your word and see what it is you have to share with us.

  42. God, we pray that you would be glorified as we see the work that you have done to redeem your people.

  43. God, may your church, your people be edified through this study.

  44. And God, we give you all praise and glory and honor.

  45. In Jesus' name, amen.

  46. So, as I said, we're going to organize our study by looking at the big themes of Scripture.

  47. Creation, fall, redemption, and restoration.

  48. And we're going to see how the theme of God's people unfolds in the story of the Bible.

  49. So, we're going to look at Adam and Eve in creation.

  50. We'll see how the fall changes things and the impact of sin.

  51. And we'll look at Israel and the church and the story of redemption.

  52. And then God's people gathered in restoration.

  53. We'll spend most of our time in the area of redemption.

  54. We'll look at Israel and the church focusing on four ways in which the Bible defines God's people.

  55. As a chosen people, a kingdom of priests, a people where God dwells, and a gathered assembly.

  56. All right.

  57. So, let's dive in.

  58. Starting with creation.

  59. Genesis 1-1.

  60. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  61. Now, God creates domains in the first three days.

  62. We see light and darkness, water and sky, land and vegetation.

  63. Then, on the fourth, fifth, and sixth days of creation, God fills those domains.

  64. Sun, moon, and stars.

  65. Fish in the sea.

  66. Birds of the air.

  67. And then, on the sixth day of creation, he makes the animals.

  68. And then he creates something amazing.

  69. Reading from Genesis 1-26-28.

  70. Then God said, let us make man in our image.

  71. After our likeness.

  72. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea.

  73. And over the birds of the heavens.

  74. And over the livestock.

  75. And over all the earth.

  76. And over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  77. So, God created man in his own image.

  78. In the image of God, he created him.

  79. Male and female, he created them.

  80. And God blessed them.

  81. And God said to them, be fruitful and multiply.

  82. And fill the earth and subdue it.

  83. And have dominion over the fish of the sea.

  84. And over the birds of the heavens.

  85. And over every living thing that creeps on the earth.

  86. We see in the beginning, God creates a people for himself.

  87. A man and a woman created in his own image.

  88. We see that these people are given authority.

  89. Under God.

  90. To have dominion over all that God had created on earth.

  91. Man and woman.

  92. They were created as relational beings.

  93. To love each other.

  94. And to worship God together.

  95. Through their obedience.

  96. These people were free to commune.

  97. And fellowship.

  98. And talk with God.

  99. The God of all creation.

  100. Genesis 3.8 also tells us that God's presence was among them.

  101. Here also what Genesis 2 says.

  102. Describing the responsibility given to this image bearer.

  103. Genesis 2.15.

  104. The Lord God took the man.

  105. And put him in the garden of Eden.

  106. To work it and keep it.

  107. The man God created to work and keep the garden.

  108. When you look at the Hebrew words for work.

  109. Abda.

  110. And keep.

  111. Shemar.

  112. The man was to be a gardener.

  113. And a guardian.

  114. Maintaining the sanctity of the garden.

  115. God saw all that he created.

  116. And it was very good.

  117. What a beautiful picture.

  118. To be a people in perfect fellowship with God.

  119. What a wonderful place to be.

  120. So from creation.

  121. What do we learn about God's people?

  122. Who?

  123. And we're going to start again.

  124. Okay.

  125. There we go.

  126. So what is it we learn about God's people?

  127. God made them.

  128. They never picked God.

  129. They were made by God.

  130. Chosen to be his people.

  131. And to serve him.

  132. God dwelt with his people.

  133. Adam and Eve could be in the very presence of God.

  134. They were created to be co-rulers.

  135. Under the supreme authority of God.

  136. Man was to be a guardian.

  137. They were relational beings.

  138. And together they worshiped God.

  139. So.

  140. Now let's enter the next big theme.

  141. The fall.

  142. It's very apparent as we look out in the world.

  143. That it didn't stay this way.

  144. Something is not right.

  145. Something is broken.

  146. What happened?

  147. Well the Bible tells us that sin entered the world.

  148. When God's people sought to become like God.

  149. God.

  150. They in turn desired to take God off his throne.

  151. And put themselves in his place.

  152. And thus sin entered the world.

  153. Through one man.

  154. And death through sin.

  155. Not only a physical death.

  156. But a spiritual one as well.

  157. A separation that had to take place.

  158. Between man and God.

  159. Because no longer could sinful man.

  160. Be in the presence of a perfect.

  161. Holy God.

  162. We have fallen away from God.

  163. But before Adam and Eve left.

  164. A promise was made.

  165. That pointed to a future descendant.

  166. Who would redeem that which was broken.

  167. Speaking to the deceiver in Genesis 3.

  168. God says.

  169. I will put enmity between you and the woman.

  170. Between your offspring.

  171. And her offspring.

  172. He shall bruise your head.

  173. And you shall bruise his heel.

  174. There's going to be a struggle.

  175. Between the serpent and God's people.

  176. Between a people who will worship God.

  177. And an enemy who will want to destroy them.

  178. But one will come from the woman.

  179. Down the line of Seth.

  180. Who would crush the snake.

  181. Unfortunately.

  182. These are going to get worse.

  183. Before they get better.

  184. The curse of sin ran deep.

  185. With his people.

  186. From being exiled.

  187. Out of the garden.

  188. To murder.

  189. To a pervasive wickedness.

  190. That spread throughout all humanity.

  191. These people.

  192. Who God had created.

  193. Who were to find delight.

  194. In resting in his presence.

  195. Had turned.

  196. And sought out their own desires.

  197. The wickedness became so great.

  198. That in Genesis 6.

  199. We see God's plan.

  200. To bring it out of flood.

  201. To destroy all of man.

  202. So is that it?

  203. The end of God's people?

  204. Praise God.

  205. Right?

  206. His.

  207. He saw fit.

  208. To be glorified.

  209. By his plan.

  210. To redeem a people.

  211. To himself.

  212. Noah found favor.

  213. In God's eyes.

  214. And God rescues this man.

  215. And his family.

  216. While destroying the rest.

  217. Of the wicked people.

  218. In the world.

  219. Well.

  220. Now that all the wicked people.

  221. Have been destroyed.

  222. Surely things would get better.

  223. That wasn't the case.

  224. Again.

  225. We see.

  226. Rather than people.

  227. Finding pleasure in God.

  228. They found pleasure.

  229. In pleasing.

  230. And glorifying themselves.

  231. And the people of the earth.

  232. Gathered together.

  233. And said.

  234. Let's build a tower.

  235. To the heavens.

  236. The people were going to show.

  237. Their strength.

  238. And self-sufficiency.

  239. By uniting.

  240. And erecting this tower.

  241. To the heavens.

  242. But instead.

  243. We see.

  244. God coming down.

  245. To see this tower.

  246. And mixing up the languages.

  247. Of the people.

  248. Resulting in different tribes.

  249. And nations.

  250. And tongues.

  251. But God wasn't done there.

  252. We're going to now follow.

  253. The redemptive plan.

  254. By looking at what it meant.

  255. To be God's people.

  256. Starting with Israel.

  257. A chosen people.

  258. As the world divided.

  259. Into different people groups.

  260. God was going to set apart.

  261. A people of his own.

  262. In Genesis 12.

  263. God makes.

  264. A promise.

  265. To a man named Abram.

  266. Also known as Abraham.

  267. Now the Lord said to Abram.

  268. Go from your country.

  269. And your kindred.

  270. And your father's house.

  271. To the land that I will show you.

  272. And I will make you.

  273. A great nation.

  274. And I will bless you.

  275. Make your name great.

  276. So that you will be a blessing.

  277. I will bless those who bless you.

  278. And to him who dishonors you.

  279. I will curse.

  280. And all the families of the earth.

  281. Shall be blessed.

  282. In this covenant.

  283. God makes with Abraham.

  284. We see that God has chosen.

  285. To build his nation.

  286. His people.

  287. Through him.

  288. This was to be the nation.

  289. Of Israel.

  290. Not only that.

  291. But through Abram.

  292. God was going to bless.

  293. God was going to bless.

  294. All the families of the earth.

  295. God's plan for his people.

  296. Is not only national.

  297. But it's international.

  298. We see God's missionary heart.

  299. And desire to reach the world.

  300. And how would God.

  301. Make this nation.

  302. Great.

  303. Well.

  304. From Abraham.

  305. We have.

  306. Isaac.

  307. And Jacob.

  308. Jacob has 12 sons.

  309. Which became the 12 tribes of Israel.

  310. Israel.

  311. These tribes were established in Egypt.

  312. Through God's divine providence.

  313. And when we turn to the book of Exodus.

  314. We see that while in Egypt.

  315. The nation of Israel grew.

  316. And a new king.

  317. Of Egypt.

  318. Came into power.

  319. And he enslaved.

  320. God's people.

  321. And it's in Exodus 6.

  322. Where God not only declares Israel.

  323. As his possession.

  324. But he gives his people.

  325. A reason to believe.

  326. And to look to him.

  327. As their Lord.

  328. Speaking of the Israelites.

  329. To Moses.

  330. He says.

  331. I will take you.

  332. To be my people.

  333. And I will be your God.

  334. And you shall know.

  335. That I am the Lord.

  336. Your God.

  337. Who has brought you.

  338. Out from under the burden.

  339. Of the Egyptians.

  340. As a father would lay claim.

  341. To a child as his own.

  342. We see God laying claim.

  343. To his people.

  344. A people.

  345. Whom he would lead.

  346. Rescue.

  347. And care for.

  348. It is God.

  349. Who is stepping in.

  350. And declaring.

  351. That these people.

  352. Will be his.

  353. And not by any means.

  354. Of their own.

  355. Listen to what Deuteronomy 7 says.

  356. For you are a people.

  357. Holy to the Lord.

  358. Your God.

  359. The Lord.

  360. Your God.

  361. Has chosen you.

  362. To be a people.

  363. For his treasured possession.

  364. Out of all the peoples.

  365. Who are on the face.

  366. Of the earth.

  367. It was not because.

  368. You were more in number.

  369. Than any other people.

  370. That God set his love on you.

  371. And chose you.

  372. For you were the.

  373. Fewest.

  374. Of all people.

  375. But it be.

  376. It was because.

  377. The Lord loves you.

  378. And is keeping the oath.

  379. That he swore to your fathers.

  380. That the Lord has brought you out.

  381. With a mighty hand.

  382. And redeemed you.

  383. From the house of slavery.

  384. From the hand of Pharaoh.

  385. In the eyes of the world.

  386. They just weren't impressive.

  387. Like in Lord of the Rings.

  388. In a world of.

  389. Elves.

  390. And wizard.

  391. And men.

  392. And orcs.

  393. And yet they were highly.

  394. Valued.

  395. A treasured possession.

  396. And called.

  397. By the God.

  398. Of all creation.

  399. To be his people.

  400. Now quick moment.

  401. To address one question.

  402. That comes to mind.

  403. Were God's people.

  404. In the Old Testament.

  405. Only descendants of Abraham.

  406. Primarily yes.

  407. But not exclusively.

  408. We see that there were others.

  409. Outside the line of Abraham.

  410. Who would come into the fold.

  411. Just as Abraham's faith.

  412. Credited him righteousness.

  413. We see the same.

  414. With a prostitute.

  415. Named Jericho.

  416. From Rahab.

  417. She helped hide.

  418. Israelite spies.

  419. And assisted their escape.

  420. Why did she do this?

  421. Because she believed.

  422. God.

  423. Saying.

  424. For the Lord.

  425. Your God.

  426. He is God.

  427. In heaven.

  428. In the heavens above.

  429. And on the earth beneath.

  430. Her faith is what saved her.

  431. We also see.

  432. This with Ruth.

  433. She was a Gentile.

  434. Who followed after God.

  435. Because of her mother-in-law Naomi.

  436. You may remember her.

  437. Famously saying.

  438. Your people shall be my people.

  439. And your God.

  440. My God.

  441. Isn't it interesting.

  442. That the Old Testament.

  443. In there.

  444. We have a whole book.

  445. Dedicated to Ruth.

  446. A Gentile woman.

  447. Being redeemed.

  448. By her kinsman redeemer.

  449. Boaz.

  450. A Gentile.

  451. Being redeemed.

  452. Sounds like typology.

  453. In the making.

  454. So we see.

  455. Israel.

  456. As a primarily.

  457. Descendants of Abraham.

  458. But God is also.

  459. Reaching Gentiles.

  460. As well.

  461. So.

  462. Now let's talk about.

  463. God's people.

  464. As a kingdom of priests.

  465. After God.

  466. Set his people.

  467. Free from their bondage.

  468. In Egypt.

  469. They make camp.

  470. In the Sinai wilderness.

  471. And this is where.

  472. God makes a covenant.

  473. With Moses.

  474. On Mount Sinai.

  475. Now therefore.

  476. If you.

  477. Will indeed.

  478. Obey my voice.

  479. And keep.

  480. My covenant.

  481. You shall be.

  482. My treasured possession.

  483. Among all peoples.

  484. For all the earth is mine.

  485. And you shall be to me.

  486. A kingdom of priests.

  487. And a holy nation.

  488. These are the words.

  489. That you shall speak.

  490. To the people.

  491. Of Israel.

  492. What we see.

  493. In this Mosaic covenant.

  494. Is that there's a condition.

  495. If.

  496. They obey God.

  497. They.

  498. Would be.

  499. God's priests.

  500. In a holy nation.

  501. To the rest of the world.

  502. And it's only a few verses.

  503. After this covenant is made.

  504. We see all the elders.

  505. Of the people.

  506. Are gathered.

  507. And agree to the terms.

  508. All that the Lord has spoken.

  509. We will do.

  510. God is setting apart.

  511. A people.

  512. From the.

  513. His people.

  514. From the rest of the world.

  515. And not only that.

  516. But he is also commissioning them.

  517. To be a kingdom of priests.

  518. They are to be mediators.

  519. Of the Lord's presence.

  520. And blessing to the world.

  521. Around them.

  522. How would a nation.

  523. Mediate the presence.

  524. And blessing of the Lord.

  525. To the world around them.

  526. How would they remain holy?

  527. Well.

  528. In Exodus.

  529. God gives.

  530. His people.

  531. Laws to live by.

  532. In Leviticus.

  533. We see.

  534. Laws.

  535. To atone for their sins.

  536. And in Deuteronomy.

  537. We see.

  538. Exhortation.

  539. To remain obedient.

  540. To God.

  541. And his laws.

  542. Trusting in his faithfulness.

  543. So that it may go well.

  544. With the people.

  545. Listen to Deuteronomy.

  546. 5.

  547. 33.

  548. You shall walk in the way.

  549. That the Lord your God.

  550. Has commanded you.

  551. That you may live.

  552. And it may go well.

  553. With you.

  554. And that you may live long.

  555. In the land.

  556. That you shall possess.

  557. Obedience.

  558. Obedience.

  559. Obedience.

  560. To God's law.

  561. Is what makes them.

  562. Holy nation.

  563. And sets them apart.

  564. From the surrounding nations.

  565. In a world.

  566. That saw.

  567. Murder.

  568. And child sacrifice.

  569. As an acceptable means.

  570. To please a deity.

  571. God's people.

  572. Demonstrated.

  573. The value of human life.

  574. Thou shalt not murder.

  575. In a world.

  576. Where people would covet.

  577. And steal.

  578. For their own gain.

  579. God's people.

  580. Demonstrated self-control.

  581. And love for one's neighbor.

  582. Thou shalt not steal.

  583. In a world where.

  584. Every day was worked.

  585. To not lose out.

  586. On profits.

  587. Or gain.

  588. God's people.

  589. Demonstrated.

  590. A reliance.

  591. Upon.

  592. The Lord.

  593. And found.

  594. Rest.

  595. One day a week.

  596. Honor the Sabbath day.

  597. And keep it holy.

  598. And the list goes on.

  599. As the people.

  600. Lived in obedience.

  601. To God's word.

  602. Not only would they thrive.

  603. But they would.

  604. Demonstrate.

  605. To the world.

  606. What righteousness.

  607. And holiness.

  608. Look like.

  609. One interesting note.

  610. Before we move on.

  611. The words used.

  612. In the garden of Eden.

  613. To describe.

  614. Adam's role.

  615. To abdah.

  616. And shamar.

  617. To keep.

  618. And to work.

  619. The garden.

  620. These are the same words.

  621. Used to describe.

  622. The priest's work.

  623. To serve God.

  624. By ministering.

  625. At the tabernacle.

  626. And to guard.

  627. The temple.

  628. From intruders.

  629. Even in the garden.

  630. God's people.

  631. Had a priestly role.

  632. And you could even see.

  633. The garden.

  634. As a type.

  635. Of temple.

  636. So with that.

  637. Let's now look at.

  638. God's people.

  639. Israel.

  640. As a people.

  641. Where God dwells.

  642. Exodus 25.

  643. 8 through 9.

  644. Says.

  645. And let them make.

  646. Me.

  647. A sanctuary.

  648. That I may dwell.

  649. In their midst.

  650. Exactly as I show you.

  651. Concerning the pattern.

  652. Of the tabernacle.

  653. And all of its furniture.

  654. So you shall make it.

  655. So first of all.

  656. This is extraordinary.

  657. Right?

  658. The all-powerful God.

  659. Of creation.

  660. Desired.

  661. To dwell.

  662. With his people.

  663. That's amazing.

  664. In itself.

  665. And he shows his people.

  666. How he will dwell.

  667. With them.

  668. By constructing.

  669. This tabernacle.

  670. The God.

  671. The God.

  672. Who has the earth.

  673. As his footstool.

  674. Would dwell.

  675. In a tent.

  676. To be.

  677. With his people.

  678. What a demonstration.

  679. Of God's humility.

  680. And desire.

  681. For his people.

  682. To be with him.

  683. This tabernacle.

  684. Included a courtyard.

  685. A holy place.

  686. And the most holy place.

  687. Or holy of holies.

  688. Where once a year.

  689. Yahweh.

  690. Would allow.

  691. The high priest.

  692. After making atonement.

  693. For him and the people.

  694. To enter.

  695. And be with God.

  696. That must have been.

  697. An extraordinary experience.

  698. The book of Exodus.

  699. Concludes.

  700. With the construction.

  701. Of the tabernacle.

  702. And these words.

  703. Then the cloud.

  704. Covered the tent of meeting.

  705. And the glory of the Lord.

  706. Filled the tabernacle.

  707. And Moses.

  708. Was not able.

  709. To enter the tent of meeting.

  710. Because the cloud.

  711. Settled on it.

  712. And the glory of the Lord.

  713. Filled the tabernacle.

  714. Throughout all their journeys.

  715. Whenever the cloud.

  716. Was taken up.

  717. From over the tabernacle.

  718. The people of Israel.

  719. Would set out.

  720. But if the cloud.

  721. Was not taken up.

  722. They did not set out.

  723. Till the day.

  724. That it was taken up.

  725. For the cloud of the Lord.

  726. Was on their tabernacle.

  727. By day.

  728. And fire in it.

  729. By night.

  730. In the sight of.

  731. All the house of Israel.

  732. Throughout all their journeys.

  733. God was their king.

  734. Directing them.

  735. With a cloud by day.

  736. And a fire by night.

  737. And he communicated.

  738. Through the priests.

  739. And the prophets.

  740. To lead the people.

  741. It was evident.

  742. That this covenant people.

  743. Were distinct.

  744. From the nations around them.

  745. God.

  746. So now let's look at Israel.

  747. As a gathered assembly.

  748. What also made this people.

  749. Of God unique.

  750. From other nations.

  751. Is that the nation of Israel.

  752. As a people.

  753. Would gather together.

  754. To hear the reading of the law.

  755. To confess sins.

  756. And worship the Lord.

  757. Look at Deuteronomy 4.10.

  758. The Lord said to me.

  759. Gather the people to me.

  760. That I may.

  761. Let them hear my words.

  762. So that they may.

  763. Learn to fear me.

  764. All the days.

  765. That they live on the earth.

  766. And that they may.

  767. Teach their children so.

  768. Do you see that phrase?

  769. Gather the people to me.

  770. This is the Hebrew word.

  771. Kahal.

  772. Which is used to describe.

  773. The assembly of Israel.

  774. This Hebrew word.

  775. Kahal.

  776. When translated to Greek.

  777. Is the word.

  778. Ecclesia.

  779. Which means.

  780. Church.

  781. It is.

  782. The gathering of God's people.

  783. To worship.

  784. And glorify.

  785. The living God.

  786. As the people.

  787. Gathered in Deuteronomy.

  788. Moses exhorts the people.

  789. To love.

  790. The Lord.

  791. Their God.

  792. Obey.

  793. His commands.

  794. And walk.

  795. In his ways.

  796. He also warns them.

  797. Of the consequence.

  798. If they do not.

  799. We see.

  800. Blessings.

  801. If they obey.

  802. And curses.

  803. If they disobey.

  804. Towards the end.

  805. Of Moses's life.

  806. He sees.

  807. Where the people are headed.

  808. And it's not good.

  809. Deuteronomy 31.

  810. 29.

  811. Says.

  812. For I know.

  813. That after my death.

  814. You will surely.

  815. Act corruptly.

  816. And turn aside.

  817. From the way.

  818. That I have commanded you.

  819. And in the days.

  820. To come.

  821. Evil will befall you.

  822. Because you will do.

  823. What is evil.

  824. In the sight of the Lord.

  825. Provoking him.

  826. To anger.

  827. Through the work.

  828. Of your hands.

  829. So.

  830. Thus far.

  831. We've seen.

  832. Four ways.

  833. In which.

  834. Israel were God's people.

  835. They were chosen people.

  836. They were a kingdom of priests.

  837. They were a people.

  838. Where God dwells.

  839. And they were a gathered assembly.

  840. Next.

  841. We're going to talk about.

  842. Something new.

  843. That's coming.

  844. Unfortunately.

  845. Moses was right.

  846. And God's people.

  847. Did not stay true.

  848. To their word.

  849. While Israel was to be.

  850. God's people.

  851. Separating themselves.

  852. And being a light.

  853. To the rest of the world.

  854. They eventually fell.

  855. Into the ways.

  856. Of the world.

  857. And the sins.

  858. Of the nations.

  859. Around them.

  860. Even though.

  861. Israel had.

  862. Yahweh.

  863. As their king.

  864. They eventually.

  865. Wanted to be like.

  866. The other nations.

  867. And have a human king.

  868. To rule over them.

  869. So.

  870. God gave them Saul.

  871. And then David.

  872. And then came Solomon.

  873. And one thing about Solomon.

  874. Was that.

  875. He built.

  876. A magnificent temple.

  877. For God.

  878. To dwell.

  879. Among his people.

  880. In.

  881. In the land.

  882. Where they settled.

  883. But ultimately.

  884. The nation of Israel.

  885. Was divided.

  886. Under Solomon's son.

  887. Rehoboam.

  888. The two nations.

  889. Now.

  890. Israel in the north.

  891. Judah in the south.

  892. Had a series of bad kings.

  893. And good kings.

  894. But eventually.

  895. They became.

  896. Exiles in another land.

  897. For about 70 years.

  898. With this.

  899. Downward.

  900. Spiral.

  901. Of the Israelites.

  902. Into their captivity.

  903. How could they be a blessing.

  904. To the nations.

  905. As we see in Hosea.

  906. The people.

  907. Who were to be a holy bride.

  908. Became unfaithful.

  909. And prostituted themselves.

  910. To other gods.

  911. Yet God's.

  912. Faithfulness.

  913. Would never waver.

  914. He would restore.

  915. His bride.

  916. We see in Jeremiah.

  917. That God is going to establish.

  918. A new covenant.

  919. Jeremiah 31.

  920. 31 through 34.

  921. Says.

  922. Behold.

  923. The days are coming.

  924. Declares the Lord.

  925. When I will make.

  926. A new covenant.

  927. With the house of Israel.

  928. And the house of Judah.

  929. Not like the covenant.

  930. That I made.

  931. With their fathers.

  932. On the day.

  933. When I took them.

  934. By the hand.

  935. To bring them out.

  936. Of the land of Egypt.

  937. My covenant.

  938. That they broke.

  939. Though I was their husband.

  940. Declares the Lord.

  941. For this.

  942. Is the covenant.

  943. That I will make.

  944. With the house of Israel.

  945. After those days.

  946. Declares the Lord.

  947. I will put.

  948. My law.

  949. Within them.

  950. I will write it.

  951. On their hearts.

  952. And I will be their God.

  953. And they shall be my people.

  954. And no longer shall.

  955. Each one.

  956. Teach his neighbor.

  957. And each his brother.

  958. Saying.

  959. Know the Lord.

  960. For they shall.

  961. All know me.

  962. From the least of them.

  963. To the greatest.

  964. Declares the Lord.

  965. For I will forgive their iniquity.

  966. And I will remember.

  967. Their sin no more.

  968. Look and see.

  969. How God is the one.

  970. Working all things.

  971. He brought them out of Egypt.

  972. He made the covenant.

  973. With Israel.

  974. He will make a new covenant.

  975. He will put the law.

  976. Within his people.

  977. He will write it.

  978. On their hearts.

  979. He will be their God.

  980. And he will forgive their iniquity.

  981. And he will remember.

  982. Their sin no more.

  983. It is God.

  984. Who is doing this.

  985. And working.

  986. All things together.

  987. We can see this covenant.

  988. Beginning with the Jews.

  989. And extending to the Gentiles.

  990. This idea of God doing something.

  991. To reach the Gentiles.

  992. Is also affirmed in other passages.

  993. We hear what it says in Isaiah 56.8.

  994. The Lord God who gathers the outcasts of Israel.

  995. Declares.

  996. I will gather yet others to him.

  997. Besides those already gathered.

  998. In this verse.

  999. Isaiah is prophesying.

1000. That salvation would reach all peoples.

1001. I will gather yet others to him.

  1002. Besides those already gathered.

1003. A promise that extends beyond the Jews.

1004. Now how would this be done?

  1005. Despite Israel's turning away.

1006. God has been preserving a remnant.

1007. A people who would continue to follow God.

  1008. And through whom.

1009. One would come to crush the serpent.

1010. Quoting from the prophet Micah.

  1011. The disciple Matthew writes.

  1012. And you O Bethlehem.

1013. In the land of Judah.

1014. Are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.

1015. For from you shall come a ruler.

1016. Who will shepherd my people Israel.

1017. Who would this ruler be?

1018. Who would this shepherd be?

  1019. Approximately 400 years.

1020. Between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

  1021. Have gone by.

1022. With no word from God.

  1023. And then.

1024. It's in this little town of Bethlehem.

1025. We get these words in Luke 2.

1026. For unto you is born this day in the city of David.

  1027. A savior.

1028. Who is Christ the Lord.

1029. The long awaited king has arrived.

  1030. It's Jesus.

  1031. Jesus.

1032. And it is for him.

1033. Who the people would later.

1034. Lay down their cloaks and palm branches.

  1035. Declaring.

  1036. Hosanna.

1037. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

1038. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David.

  1039. Hosanna in the highest.

  1040. Now.

1041. During this time of Jesus.

  1042. The Jewish people.

  1043. Are under Roman occupation.

1044. The idea of a ruler.

  1045. And a savior.

1046. Was one who was going to.

1047. Free them from the oppression.

  1048. They were under.

  1049. It is their idea.

1050. That he was going to.

  1051. Set up his kingdom.

  1052. With them.

  1053. As his people.

  1054. They're right about a coming kingdom.

  1055. But.

1056. Christ did not come to establish his kingdom on earth.

  1057. This time.

1058. Christ came to build the kingdom of God.

1059. Or sometimes referred to as the kingdom of heaven.

  1060. Which we'll see later.

1061. He came to fulfill the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah.

1062. The spirit of the Lord is upon me.

1063. Because he has anointed me to proclaim the good news to the poor.

1064. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives.

1065. And recovering of sight to the blind.

1066. To set at liberty those who are oppressed.

1067. To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

1068. Jesus Christ is the climax.

1069. Of this beautiful redemption story.

  1070. Of God's people.

1071. The purpose for Christ's coming.

1072. Was to set his people free.

1073. From the bondage of sin.

1074. Through his death on the cross.

1075. And resurrection from the grave.

  1076. In doing so.

1077. He accomplished the plan of redemption.

1078. That was set in motion from the beginning.

  1079. What's apparent.

1080. Is that Christ was bringing in something new.

  1081. And God's people.

1082. Would never look the same.

1083. They would become the church.

1084. Now Jesus only referred to the church.

1085. A couple times in his ministry.

  1086. Once in Matthew 16.

1087. When he spoke to Peter.

  1088. About being the rock.

1089. On which he would build his church.

1090. And one other time in Matthew 18.

1091. When Jesus gives practical wisdom.

1092. On how to address sinful offense.

1093. By someone within the church.

1094. These are two explicit areas.

1095. Where we see Jesus talking about the church.

1096. However, we see other passages.

1097. Where Jesus is talking about the reality.

  1098. Of what will happen.

1099. And be realized in the church.

  1100. Before we go on.

  1101. A quick note.

  1102. Back on typology.

1103. Looking back at that story of Ruth.

1104. Is true that we see Boaz.

1105. As a type of Christ.

  1106. This typology is evident.

  1107. When we see Boaz.

  1108. Was from Bethlehem.

  1109. Jesus was from Bethlehem.

1110. Boaz was a kinsman redeemer.

1111. And we see Jesus as a redeemer of sinners.

1112. Boaz brought a Gentile in the family.

  1113. And Jesus.

  1114. Made the way for.

  1115. For Gentiles.

1116. To enter into the family of God.

1117. And if you dive in.

  1118. You'll see even more.

  1119. So.

  1120. Let's look.

  1121. At how.

  1122. The four ways.

  1123. In which.

  1124. Israel operated.

  1125. As God's people.

  1126. Have changed.

  1127. With the church.

  1128. Through this new covenant.

  1129. Found in Christ.

  1130. So first.

1131. Let's see the impact it made.

  1132. To God.

  1133. His chosen people.

  1134. Christ changed everything.

1135. And we see the gates of salvation.

  1136. Open wide for all.

  1137. Jews.

  1138. And Gentiles alike.

  1139. During Jesus' ministry.

  1140. He describes.

  1141. The kingdom of God.

  1142. Reaching people.

  1143. From all over.

  1144. We see this.

  1145. In a conversation.

  1146. Jesus has.

  1147. With the centurion.

  1148. Who came.

  1149. Asking Jesus.

  1150. To heal his servant.

  1151. This Gentile centurion.

  1152. Demonstrated.

  1153. Incredible faith.

  1154. Christ was willing.

1155. To go to that man's home.

  1156. And heal his servant.

  1157. But.

  1158. The centurion.

  1159. Believed.

  1160. That Jesus.

1161. Just needed to say the word.

1162. And he would be healed.

  1163. Listen to Matthew 8.

  1164. 10 through 12.

  1165. When Jesus heard this.

  1166. He marveled.

  1167. And said to those.

  1168. Who followed him.

  1169. Truly I tell you.

1170. With no one in Israel.

1171. Have I found such faith.

  1172. I tell you.

1173. Many will come from east.

  1174. And west.

1175. And recline at the table.

  1176. With Abraham.

  1177. Isaac.

  1178. And Jacob.

1179. In the kingdom of heaven.

  1180. While the sons.

  1181. Of the kingdom.

  1182. Will be thrown.

  1183. Into outer darkness.

  1184. Into the place.

1185. Where there will be weeping.

  1186. And gnashing.

  1187. Of teeth.

  1188. Notice what Christ says.

1189. About the kingdom of heaven.

1190. And the sons of the kingdom.

  1191. The kingdom of heaven.

  1192. Will be filled.

1193. With people from all over.

  1194. Reaching Jews.

  1195. And Gentiles alike.

  1196. But some of.

  1197. Ethnic Israel.

  1198. Descendants of Abraham.

  1199. By natural birth.

  1200. Would not be part.

  1201. Of God's kingdom.

  1202. God made a promise.

  1203. To Abraham.

1204. That he would be the father.

  1205. Of a great nation.

  1206. And that all nations.

  1207. Would be blessed.

  1208. What better blessing.

  1209. Than Jesus Christ.

1210. And the joy of salvation.

  1211. Offered to all people.

1212. And what about this great nation?

  1213. This has been fulfilled.

  1214. Not in the Israelites.

  1215. Because of heritage.

  1216. But from all.

  1217. Who put their faith.

  1218. In Christ.

  1219. And are grafted.

  1220. Into this family.

  1221. Paul affirms this.

  1222. When he writes.

  1223. In Romans.

1224. But it is not as though.

  1225. The word of God.

  1226. Has failed.

  1227. For not all.

  1228. Who are descended.

  1229. From Israel.

  1230. Belong to Israel.

  1231. And not all.

  1232. Are children of Abraham.

1233. Because they are his offspring.

  1234. But through Isaac.

  1235. Shall your offspring.

  1236. Be named.

  1237. This means.

  1238. That it is not.

1239. The children of the flesh.

1240. Who are the children of God.

  1241. But the children.

  1242. Of the promise.

  1243. Are counted as offspring.

  1244. Brothers and sisters.

1245. This is you and I.

  1246. Both the Jews.

  1247. And Gentiles.

1248. Who have put our trust.

  1249. In Jesus Christ.

  1250. Christ.

  1251. This is the church.

  1252. We are recipients.

  1253. Of what God promised.

  1254. To Abraham.

  1255. God's people.

  1256. Are no longer found.

  1257. In a national tribe.

1258. But in an international church.

  1259. This is the fulfillment.

1260. Of what we saw in Isaiah.

  1261. And in Genesis.

  1262. All nations are blessed.

1263. I will make you a great nation.

  1264. I will gather others.

  1265. Besides those already gathered.

  1266. Great.

  1267. Is God's faithfulness.

1268. One note I want to make.

  1269. And not ignore.

  1270. In addition to God's.

  1271. Chosen people.

  1272. Expanding.

  1273. To the Gentiles.

  1274. We see in scripture.

  1275. That God.

  1276. Calls.

1277. And has chosen his people.

  1278. Or predestined us.

  1279. For adoption.

  1280. Through Christ.

1281. Now to do this topic justice.

  1282. It would require.

1283. A whole nother Sunday school.

  1284. But what is clear.

  1285. Is that it is.

  1286. By God's grace.

  1287. And his loving kindness.

1288. That he would look upon us.

  1289. And call us.

  1290. His sons and daughters.

  1291. Just as Israel was.

  1292. We are chosen.

  1293. And desired.

1294. As a people by God.

1295. Through no means of our own.

  1296. All right.

  1297. Next.

  1298. Let's look at.

  1299. The church.

1300. Now as a kingdom of priests.

  1301. Like Israel.

1302. We are to set ourselves.

  1303. Apart.

  1304. As a holy people.

  1305. First Peter 2.

  1306. 9 says.

1307. But you are a chosen race.

  1308. A royal priesthood.

  1309. A royal priesthood.

  1310. A holy nation.

  1311. A people.

  1312. For his own possession.

  1313. That you may proclaim.

  1314. The excellencies.

  1315. Of him.

  1316. Who calls you.

  1317. Out of darkness.

1318. And into his marvelous light.

  1319. As a royal priesthood.

  1320. We are a people.

  1321. To proclaim the excellencies.

  1322. Of our savior.

  1323. A priesthood.

  1324. Proclaiming the good news.

  1325. Of the gospel.

  1326. To the world.

  1327. What is more.

  1328. Is that.

  1329. We.

  1330. Believers.

  1331. In Christ Jesus.

  1332. Are considered.

  1333. A holy nation.

  1334. This is.

  1335. The nation.

  1336. Promised.

  1337. To Abraham.

  1338. Long ago.

  1339. And fulfilled.

  1340. In the church.

  1341. Through Christ.

  1342. As we share.

  1343. The good news.

  1344. Of the gospel.

  1345. And exemplify.

  1346. The fruits.

  1347. Of the Holy Spirit.

  1348. We are mediating.

  1349. God's presence.

  1350. And blessing.

  1351. In the world.

  1352. As we serve.

  1353. One another.

  1354. As we love.

  1355. Our neighbor.

  1356. As we pray.

  1357. For others.

  1358. Here and abroad.

  1359. These are just.

  1360. A few ways.

  1361. In which.

  1362. That is being done.

  1363. As a holy nation.

  1364. Seeking.

  1365. To live.

  1366. Holy life.

  1367. We too.

  1368. Are to live.

  1369. Lives.

  1370. In obedience.

  1371. To God's word.

  1372. Just like.

  1373. The Israelites.

  1374. But.

  1375. We no longer.

  1376. Depend.

  1377. On.

  1378. Ritual.

  1379. Acts.

  1380. Of the sacrificial system.

  1381. To atone.

  1382. For our sins.

  1383. It is through.

  1384. Faith.

  1385. And trust.

  1386. In the final.

  1387. Sacrifice.

  1388. Of Christ.

  1389. And his blood.

  1390. Shed.

  1391. At Calvary.

  1392. God willing.

  1393. We'll dive into this.

  1394. More.

  1395. Next week.

  1396. And as we pursue.

  1397. A life of holiness.

  1398. A life.

  1399. Pleasing.

  1400. To our heavenly father.

1401. We are being sanctified daily.

  1402. By the work.

  1403. Of the holy spirit.

  1404. In our lives.

  1405. Now.

  1406. That leads us.

  1407. To.

  1408. A church.

  1409. To people.

  1410. Where God dwells.

1411. And let's see how this has changed.

1412. As we think of the work of the holy spirit.

  1413. In our lives.

  1414. We can't get away.

  1415. From Christ.

  1416. Redeeming work.

  1417. How Christ.

  1418. Redeeming work.

  1419. Has changed.

1420. How God dwells among his people now.

1421. I want to go back.

1422. To Christ's time of ministry.

1423. And when he was speaking.

  1424. To the Samaritan woman.

  1425. At the well.

  1426. Jesus said to her.

  1427. Woman.

  1428. Believe me.

  1429. The hour is coming.

1430. When neither on this mountain.

  1431. Nor in Jerusalem.

1432. Will you worship the father.

1433. You worship what you do not know.

1434. We worship what we know.

  1435. For salvation.

  1436. Is from the Jews.

1437. But the hour is coming.

  1438. And now here.

  1439. When the true worshipers.

  1440. Will worship.

  1441. The father.

  1442. And spirit.

  1443. And truth.

  1444. For the father.

  1445. Is seeking.

  1446. Such a people.

  1447. To worship him.

  1448. God is spirit.

1449. And those who worship him.

  1450. Must worship.

  1451. In spirit.

  1452. In truth.

  1453. We see here.

  1454. That.

  1455. Worshiping God.

  1456. By his people.

1457. Will no longer be bound.

  1458. To it.

  1459. By a specific temple.

  1460. Or location.

  1461. True worshipers of God.

  1462. Will worship him.

  1463. In spirit.

  1464. Speaking of.

  1465. The Holy Spirit.

  1466. Dwelling.

  1467. In each believer.

1468. Listen to what Paul says.

  1469. Also in Ephesians.

  1470. So then.

  1471. You are no longer.

  1472. Strangers and aliens.

  1473. But you are.

  1474. You are fellow citizens.

  1475. With the saints.

1476. And members of the household of God.

1477. Built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets.

1478. Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.

1479. In whom the whole structure.

  1480. Being joined together.

1481. Grows into a holy temple.

  1482. In the Lord.

  1483. In him.

  1484. You.

1485. You also are being built together.

  1486. Into a dwelling place.

  1487. For God.

  1488. By the spirit.

  1489. Paul gives us.

  1490. A great image.

  1491. Of this.

  1492. New.

  1493. Temple.

  1494. As a picture.

  1495. Of all of us.

  1496. Who are.

  1497. In Christ.

  1498. Being built together.

1499. Where Christ is our cornerstone.

  1500. And we are.

  1501. All joined together.

  1502. On a foundation.

1503. Of the apostles and prophets.

1504. We are the new temple.

  1505. The new dwelling place.

  1506. Of God.

  1507. Next.

1508. Let's look at the church.

  1509. As a gathered assembly.

  1510. The church.

  1511. Is a gathered people.

  1512. Where Christ.

  1513. Is the head.

1514. And we are the body.

  1515. Ephesians 1.

  1516. 23.

  1517. Through 23.

  1518. Says.

1519. And he put all things under his feet.

  1520. And gave him.

1521. As head over all things.

  1522. To the church.

  1523. Which is the.

  1524. Which is his body.

  1525. The fullness.

  1526. Of him.

  1527. Who fills all.

  1528. In all.

  1529. As of the church.

  1530. We are representatives.

  1531. As the body.

  1532. Of Christ.

  1533. As Israel.

  1534. Was a nation.

  1535. That would assemble.

  1536. For times of worship.

  1537. The church today.

  1538. Is an international gathering.

  1539. Around the world.

1540. Just like what we're doing today.

  1541. We worship.

  1542. We sing praises.

  1543. Encourage one another.

  1544. Hear the words.

  1545. Of God.

  1546. From the Bible.

  1547. Confess our sins.

  1548. To one another.

  1549. And offer up.

  1550. Acts of love.

  1551. And service.

  1552. There is unity.

  1553. In the church.

  1554. Galatians 3.

  1555. 28 through 29.

  1556. Says.

  1557. There is neither Jew.

  1558. No Greek.

  1559. There is neither slave.

  1560. No free.

  1561. There is no male.

  1562. And female.

  1563. You are all.

  1564. One.

  1565. In Christ.

  1566. Jesus.

  1567. As we gather.

  1568. We need to remember.

1569. That we are one family.

1570. Listen to what Jesus says.

1571. While he was still speaking.

  1572. To the people.

  1573. Behold.

  1574. His mother.

  1575. And his brothers.

  1576. Stood outside.

1577. Asking to speak with him.

  1578. But he replied.

  1579. To the man.

  1580. Who told him.

  1581. Who is my mother?

1582. And who are my brothers?

1583. And stretching out his hand.

  1584. Towards his disciples.

  1585. He said.

  1586. Here are my mothers.

  1587. Here.

  1588. Are my brothers.

  1589. Here are my sisters.

1590. For whoever does the will.

  1591. Of my father.

  1592. In heaven.

  1593. Is my brother.

  1594. And sister.

  1595. And mother.

  1596. Brothers and sisters.

1597. Although we are not related by blood.

  1598. Or maybe direct descendants.

  1599. Of Abraham.

1600. We are part of the family.

  1601. By faith.

1602. This is a great gift.

  1603. God has given us.

1604. So let us treat one another.

  1605. As family.

  1606. With all our faults.

  1607. And all our failures.

1608. Let us love one another.

  1609. And spur.

  1610. One another on.

  1611. In the faith.

  1612. We have a belonging.

1613. In the family of Christ.

  1614. So.

  1615. Now we come.

1616. To the last big thing.

  1617. Restoration.

  1618. As a church.

  1619. We are longing.

  1620. For Christ's return.

1621. When all is made new.

1622. We can see a connection.

  1623. Between how Israel.

  1624. And the church.

  1625. Operate as God's people.

1626. But there is also a connection.

  1627. Between God's people.

  1628. In the garden.

  1629. And God's people.

1630. In the kingdom of heaven.

  1631. When Christ returns.

1632. And all things are restored.

1633. Listen to some of these passages.

  1634. That speak.

  1635. To this coming kingdom.

  1636. And how it compares.

1637. To the garden of Eden.

  1638. In the garden.

  1639. God made.

1640. And chose Adam and Eve.

  1641. To be his people.

  1642. Mark records Jesus.

  1643. Saying that.

  1644. He will come again.

1645. And gather all his people.

  1646. Back to himself.

  1647. And then.

  1648. They will see.

  1649. The son of man.

  1650. Coming in the clouds.

  1651. With great power.

  1652. And glory.

1653. And when he sends out.

  1654. The angels.

  1655. And gather his.

  1656. Elect.

  1657. From the four winds.

1658. From the ends of the earth.

1659. To the ends of heaven.

  1660. In the garden.

1661. God dwelt among his people.

1662. And because of the fall.

  1663. They were sent out.

  1664. Of his presence.

1665. In the kingdom of God.

  1666. We are reunited.

  1667. Behold.

  1668. The dwelling place.

  1669. Of God.

  1670. Is with man.

1671. He will dwell with them.

1672. And they will be his people.

  1673. And God himself.

  1674. Will be with them.

  1675. As their God.

  1676. In the garden.

1677. God walked among his people.

  1678. In their presence.

1679. In the kingdom of God.

  1680. We will see God.

  1681. Face to face.

  1682. Once again.

1683. No longer will be there.

1684. There be anything a curse.

1685. But the throne of God.

  1686. And the lamb.

  1687. Will be in it.

  1688. And his servants.

  1689. Will worship him.

1690. They will see his face.

  1691. And his name.

1692. Will be on their foreheads.

  1693. In the garden.

  1694. God gave authority.

  1695. To his people.

  1696. Over creation.

1697. In the kingdom of God.

1698. The people will be given authority as well.

  1699. We see this.

  1700. In Paul's letters.

  1701. To the Corinthians.

  1702. In the garden.

  1703. God commanded his people.

  1704. To be fruitful.

  1705. And multiply.

1706. In the kingdom of God.

  1707. The people.

  1708. Will be as numerous.

  1709. As the sands.

  1710. Revelation says.

  1711. After this.

  1712. I looked.

  1713. And behold.

  1714. A great multitude.

1715. That no one could number.

  1716. From every nation.

  1717. From all tribes.

  1718. And peoples.

  1719. In languages.

  1720. In languages.

  1721. Standing before the throne.

  1722. And before the lamb.

  1723. Clothed in white robes.

  1724. With palm branches.

  1725. In their hands.

  1726. And crying out.

  1727. With a loud voice.

  1728. Salvation belongs.

  1729. To our God.

1730. Who sits on the throne.

  1731. And to the lamb.

  1732. Brothers and sisters.

  1733. As people of God.

1734. We have a wonderful future.

  1735. To look forward to.

  1736. A future.

  1737. Worshipping.

  1738. The eternal king.

1739. We will be able to.

  1740. Bask in the joy.

  1741. Of our savior.

  1742. Worshipping him.

  1743. As intended.

  1744. In a world restored.

1745. To what it was meant to be.

  1746. With no more death.

  1747. Or mourning.

  1748. Or crying.

  1749. Or pain.

1750. The old will pass away.

  1751. And all things.

  1752. Will be made.

  1753. New.

  1754. Brothers and sisters.

1755. Enter into the joy of the Lord.

  1756. So friend.

  1757. If you're here listening.

  1758. And this.

  1759. To this.

1760. And you feel a stirring desire.

  1761. In your heart.

1762. To be part of this family of God.

  1763. Consider Jesus.

  1764. Consider his death.

  1765. And resurrection.

  1766. The price he paid.

1767. With his blood for you.

  1768. We are all.

  1769. Sinners.

1770. But we can take hold of Jesus.

1771. And be credited with his righteousness.

  1772. And we too.

1773. Can belong to this family.

  1774. In Christ.

  1775. If that's you.

  1776. Please come see me.

1777. Or one of the pastors.

  1778. Or elders.

1779. And we would love for you.

1780. To be part of this family.

  1781. So.

1782. As been tradition with this study.

  1783. We're going to close.

  1784. With a hymn.

  1785. So.

1786. We're going to close with.

  1787. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1788. And I'll start.

1789. And if we can all join along.

  1790. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1791. O God my Father.

1792. There is no shadow of turning with thee.

  1793. Thou changest not.

1794. Thy compassions they fail not.

  1795. Thou thou hast been.

  1796. Thou forever will be.

  1797. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1798. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1799. Lord.

  1800. Morning by morning.

  1801. New mercies I see.

  1802. All I have needed.

  1803. Thy hand hath provided.

  1804. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1805. Lord unto thee.

  1806. Summer and winter.

  1807. Springtime and harvest.

  1808. Sun, moon and stars.

  1809. In their courses above.

  1810. Join with all nature.

  1811. In manifold witness.

  1812. To thy great faithfulness.

  1813. Mercy and love.

  1814. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1815. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1816. Morning by morning.

  1817. New mercies I see.

  1818. All I have needed.

  1819. Thy hand hath provided.

  1820. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1821. Great is thy faithfulness.

  1822. Lord unto me.

  1823. Pardon for sin.

  1824. The peace that endureth.

  1825. Thy own here presence.

1826. To cheer and to guide.

  1827. Strength for today.

1828. In bright hope for tomorrow.

  1829. God bless.

  1830. Lord unto me.

  1831. God blesses the Lord.

  1832. Amen.

  1833. Lest is all mine.

  1834. Let us know.

  1835. Amen.

  1836. Lord unto me.

  1837. Lord unto me.

  1838. Amen.

  1839. Amen.

  1840. Amen.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. Amen.

  1843. Amen.

  1844. Amen.

  1845. Amen.

  1846. Amen.

  1847. Amen.

  1848. Amen.

  1849. Amen.

  1850. Amen.

  1851. Amen.

  1852. New mercies I see

  1853. All I have needed

  1854. Thy hand hath provided

  1855. Great is Thy faithfulness

  1856. Lord unto me

  1857. Amen

1858. So this concludes our biblical theology study

1859. Of God's people in the church

1860. So God willing we will

1861. Begin to look at the biblical theology of sacrifice

  1862. Next week

1863. And I look forward to seeing you then

1864. So let's close today in prayer

1865. And I would be happy to take questions

1866. And I'd love also to hear

1867. What came to mind for you

  1868. With the word

  1869. Church

1870. At the beginning of this

  1871. And has anything changed

  1872. After today

1873. So let's go to the Lord in prayer

  1874. Father Lord God

1875. We thank you for this day

1876. We thank you for your word

  1877. As you've shown us

1878. This mighty work you have done

1879. To draw us unto yourself

  1880. Father

  1881. Lord we give you

  1882. All praise and glory

  1883. For it is you

1884. Who are doing this work

  1885. And it is you

1886. Who are continuing to do the work

  1887. In your people Father

  1888. God we thank you

1889. And we give you praise and glory

1890. And honor in Jesus name

  1891. Amen

  1892. Okay

  1893. So

  1894. Any questions

  1895. Tom

  1896. So

  1897. Maybe you said

1898. But do you think that

  1899. In the garden

1900. That they were like the church

1901. In the same way we are

1902. In the sense that like

1903. God only dwelt among them

  1904. What was in them

  1905. Like they were temples

  1906. Of the Holy Spirit

  1907. So to speak

1908. I know this is really speculative

  1909. Yeah

  1910. Yeah

  1911. And could you

1912. Just for the sake of

1913. Folks who are going to watch later

1914. Could you repeat the question

  1915. Just to the

  1916. Yeah

  1917. No go ahead

  1918. So

  1919. Let me just reiterate

1920. Make sure I got the question right

  1921. So

  1922. Would you say that

1923. Adam and Eve in the garden

1924. Were like the church today

  1925. Is that right

  1926. Yeah

  1927. Yeah

  1928. I could see in a sense

  1929. They were

1930. When we look at these

  1931. These main ideas

  1932. Right

  1933. You know

1934. Of they were chosen people

  1935. You know

1936. God has made Adam and Eve

  1937. Right

  1938. To be his people

  1939. They're

  1940. God's people are people

  1941. Who

  1942. God dwells among

1943. And so we see that

  1944. In the garden

  1945. They're

  1946. As God's people

1947. To be a royal priesthood

  1948. I think that was

1949. When you look at those two words

  1950. To keep

  1951. In the Hebrew

  1952. The Hebrew language

1953. I feel like that was a beautiful

  1954. Way to just demonstrate

1955. Like sort of the priestly nature

  1956. And to also

1957. Live in obedience to God

  1958. Right

1959. Because God had given them

  1960. In that case

  1961. That command

1962. Not to eat of the fruit

  1963. Right

1964. And in a similar manner

  1965. Right

  1966. As the church

  1967. We're commanded to

  1968. Obey God

  1969. And to remain faithful

  1970. To his word

  1971. Right

  1972. To pursue him

  1973. And

  1974. By them remaining obedient

  1975. I see this worship

  1976. So

  1977. In a sense

  1978. I could see it

  1979. Like the church

  1980. And

  1981. Unfortunately

  1982. Just like us

  1983. They are sinners

  1984. As we are

1985. And we see the result

  1986. Of that

  1987. So Tom

  1988. Does that answer

  1989. Your question?

  1990. Yeah

  1991. Go ahead

  1992. I picture the

  1993. Gathered

  1994. Assembly

  1995. Out over there

  1996. In the sanctuary

  1997. Where you asked

  1998. What came to my

  1999. Church

  2000. But I really loved

  2001. How you pointed out

  2002. God's missionary heart

2003. Even in the Old Testament

  2004. Beginning with Abraham

  2005. His desire

2006. To bless all the nations

  2007. And

2008. I wonder how you would think

  2009. How does

  2010. Why does God

  2011. Care so much about

  2012. Them not living

  2013. Amongst the Canaanites

  2014. Because I think people

  2015. Get confused

  2016. That

  2017. God is different

  2018. Back then

  2019. Than he is now

  2020. Like now God

  2021. Cares about the nations

  2022. Back then

  2023. God

  2024. Really didn't care

  2025. About the nations

  2026. Based on

  2027. What

  2028. Based on the Canaanites

  2029. And Israel

  2030. Living amongst them

  2031. But what was God's

  2032. Like

  2033. What was his purpose

  2034. And why he gave

  2035. Those directions

  2036. About the Canaanites

  2037. With Israel

2038. So what was God's purpose

  2039. In separating God's people

  2040. From the Canaanite people

  2041. And not having

  2042. Sort of

  2043. Where we see today

  2044. With the church

  2045. Where we're all

  2046. In like

  2047. Amongst the nations

  2048. But God sort of

  2049. Had them together

  2050. Yeah

2051. I think part of that

  2052. Is the idea of

  2053. God protecting his people

  2054. And guarding them

  2055. From the ways

  2056. Of the other nations

  2057. Right

  2058. I think as a ruler

  2059. God is caring for

  2060. And leading his people

  2061. In a way

  2062. To be a holy

  2063. And righteous nation

2064. To set those people apart

  2065. To make sure that

  2066. That nation

  2067. And its entity

  2068. Was to be

  2069. Different

  2070. Or separate

  2071. From the world

  2072. Around them

2073. And if they were to

  2074. If they were to

  2075. Bring in

  2076. Other cultures

  2077. It could definitely

  2078. Ruin that

  2079. That nation

  2080. And that

  2081. That desire for them

2082. To be a holy nation

  2083. And that's actually

  2084. What we see happening

  2085. Right

  2086. Now we do also

  2087. As the church

  2088. Have the same

  2089. Calling

  2090. To be set apart

  2091. Right

2092. To be a holy nation

  2093. To be a priesthood

  2094. The difference is

  2095. It's

  2096. You know

  2097. As opposed to

  2098. One large nation

  2099. We now have

  2100. Catharines

  2101. Everywhere as the church

  2102. But we all

  2103. Are being called

  2104. To the same thing

  2105. To love the Lord

  2106. Your God

  2107. To serve him

  2108. And only him

  2109. Right

  2110. And obey him

  2111. And to worship him

  2112. Alone

  2113. So

  2114. Yeah

  2115. That's a great question

  2116. Dean

2117. Do you have a question

  2118. So

  2119. In terms of

  2120. Emphasis in the

  2121. Old Testament

  2122. New Testament

  2123. I mean

  2124. It seems like

  2125. In the Old Testament

2126. Is there a big emphasis

  2127. On like lineage

  2128. And based on

  2129. Like you know

  2130. The chosen

  2131. People

  2132. And what not

2133. What is one of our

  2134. Is it faith

  2135. Or the lineage

  2136. Or the both

  2137. Or has that changed

  2138. Over the course

  2139. Of the New Testament

  2140. Yeah

  2141. Yeah

  2142. Great question Dean

  2143. I think

  2144. What we see

  2145. Is that

  2146. It was really

  2147. Never about the lineage

  2148. Right

  2149. It was about

  2150. The faith

  2151. Of the people

  2152. And them being

  2153. Obedient to God

  2154. Even

  2155. You know

  2156. When

  2157. Christ was talking

  2158. About how

  2159. Even those

  2160. Who are of

  2161. You know

  2162. That kingdom

  2163. They are not

  2164. Going to be part

  2165. Of the kingdom

  2166. Of heaven

  2167. Because they

  2168. Themselves

  2169. Will not have

  2170. A heart of faith

  2171. Or putting their

  2172. Trust in God

  2173. So that was

  2174. They were

2175. While part of a lineage

2176. And part of a nation

  2177. Right

  2178. And a people

  2179. Of heritage

  2180. Descendants of Abraham

  2181. We still see that

  2182. You know

  2183. God was also

  2184. Bringing in other people

  2185. Right

  2186. With like the stories

  2187. Of Rahab

  2188. And Ruth

  2189. So

  2190. It wasn't just that

  2191. The important part

  2192. Was their faith

  2193. And obedience

  2194. To God

  2195. And so that's what

  2196. We see there

  2197. Does that help

  2198. Dean?

  2199. I would just like

  2200. To add to that

  2201. I think there's

  2202. So much in the

  2203. Old Testament

  2204. About God's love

  2205. For the non-Jew

  2206. I mean

  2207. The whole story

  2208. Of Jonah

  2209. Being sent

  2210. Amen

  2211. That city

  2212. Amen

  2213. To bring them

  2214. Into the fold

  2215. And just this morning

  2216. I read

  2217. Nebuchadnezzar

  2218. My servant

  2219. And he was

  2220. The king

  2221. Of the Chaldeans

  2222. And you know

  2223. The destroyer

  2224. Of Jerusalem

  2225. And of course

  2226. Cyrus too

  2227. So

  2228. I think God's heart

  2229. Has always been

  2230. For everyone

  2231. But

  2232. Like you said

  2233. He calls us

  2234. To be set apart

  2235. The church

  2236. To be set apart

  2237. I love that example

  2238. Elizabeth

  2239. With the

  2240. With Jonah

  2241. Because you really

  2242. See the difference

  2243. Between

  2244. You know

  2245. The heart of God

2246. Versus the heart of man

  2247. And even those

  2248. Who are called

  2249. To be his people

  2250. Right

  2251. Didn't even want

  2252. You know

  2253. Nineveh

  2254. They didn't even

  2255. Want them to repent

  2256. Because they knew

  2257. God was going to

  2258. Demonstrate love

  2259. And patience

  2260. And kindness

  2261. With that nation

  2262. Right

  2263. But yeah

  2264. That's a great example

  2265. Of God

  2266. Showing a heart

  2267. For people

  2268. Outside

  2269. Of Israel

  2270. I love that

  2271. Yeah

  2272. When you have

  2273. A three line

  2274. When he

  2275. First breaks

  2276. The covenant

  2277. With Abraham

  2278. It's

  2279. To be a blessing

  2280. For all nations

  2281. And then

  2282. With Moses

  2283. There's all these

  2284. Rules about how

  2285. You treat the foreigner

  2286. One tool

  2287. For the native

  2288. And the foreigner

  2289. So it's

  2290. And there's

  2291. I remember reading

  2292. Something about

  2293. Like

  2294. There might have been

  2295. Some addictions

  2296. Crossing the Red Sea

  2297. With Israel

  2298. Because they saw

  2299. What God did

  2300. And went

  2301. We want to be

  2302. Part of that

  2303. Yeah

  2304. Ben that's great

  2305. That's a great

  2306. Observation there

  2307. Yeah

  2308. Elizabeth

  2309. So when I thought

  2310. Of the church

  2311. The word that came

  2312. To my mind

  2313. Is that

  2314. We're the bride

  2315. Of Christ

  2316. But I just wondered

  2317. How men feel

  2318. About that

  2319. Because

  2320. You know

  2321. I see the bride

  2322. As constantly

  2323. Perfecting herself

  2324. And making herself

  2325. More beautiful

  2326. More loving

  2327. And being cherished

  2328. By Jesus

  2329. And that's how

  2330. I picture the church

  2331. So I wonder

  2332. About that

  2333. How do men

  2334. Think about the idea

  2335. Of being a bride

  2336. Yeah

  2337. Well I don't think

2338. I can speak for all men

  2339. But what I love

  2340. About that

  2341. Personally

  2342. Is

  2343. One it's a reminder

2344. That he is the one

  2345. Leading

  2346. Right

  2347. In the relationship

  2348. And not I

2349. And so when I look

  2350. To see how

  2351. As a bride

  2352. How the Lord

2353. Is going to treat me

  2354. I think as a man

  2355. And as a husband

  2356. I like to see

  2357. How then

  2358. Ought I

  2359. To be treating

  2360. And leading my wife

  2361. As well

  2362. So I think it's a great example

  2363. And I'm

  2364. I don't

  2365. I mean I like it

  2366. Personally

  2367. I love the fact

  2368. That God has

  2369. You know

2370. Used sort of a wedding

  2371. Right between a groom

  2372. And a bride

  2373. To depict

  2374. How this relationship

  2375. And this

  2376. This covenant

  2377. Between him

  2378. And his people

  2379. Are formed

  2380. So

  2381. Yeah

  2382. It's the comments

  2383. That you mentioned

  2384. There's all these rules

  2385. About

  2386. Deuteronomy

2387. You kind of mentioned it

  2388. But God's concerned

  2389. For the poor

  2390. The foreigner

  2391. The soldier

  2392. And

  2393. It's amazing

  2394. How

  2395. The people of Israel

  2396. Because they were slaves

  2397. They were a treat

  2398. The outsiders

  2399. With

  2400. With charity

  2401. And love

  2402. And you see

  2403. That Boaz

  2404. And Boaz

  2405. Is following

  2406. Mosaic law

  2407. And not

  2408. Delinging everything

  2409. He had

  2410. So that the foreigner

  2411. To come outside

  2412. And eat

  2413. And it's amazing

  2414. How

2415. That the people of God

  2416. Are always

  2417. Concerned

  2418. Those who are

  2419. The least of these

  2420. And I just see

  2421. That throughout the church

  2422. That

  2423. You know

  2424. Rome

  2425. Back in Rome

  2426. They never throw babies

  2427. Out in church

2428. Because no one wanted them

2429. The church would come in

  2430. And take them

  2431. And take the babies

  2432. Yeah

  2433. I think God

  2434. Was really

  2435. Showed the church

  2436. People

  2437. Proclaiming the excellencies

  2438. Of him involved

  2439. Because we were slaves

  2440. To sin

  2441. And now

  2442. We can

  2443. Show that same love

  2444. And honor

  2445. To those

  2446. Whom the world

  2447. Rejects

  2448. Yeah

  2449. As unworthy

  2450. And not worth

  2451. Amen

  2452. Amen

  2453. Brother

  2454. Amen

  2455. Anything else?

  2456. Okay

  2457. Do you think

  2458. Okay

  2459. There

  2460. Is there a sense

  2461. That Jesus

  2462. Is

  2463. The people of God

2464. Is it being carried through

  2465. And kind of

  2466. Climates at Jesus

  2467. Or does it

  2468. Kind of

  2469. Or does it

  2470. Go a different route

  2471. I guess

  2472. Is Jesus

  2473. Is Jesus

  2474. A

  2475. Instance

  2476. Of

  2477. I don't know

  2478. Yeah

  2479. This is why

  2480. I'm not quite sure

  2481. I'd phrase this question

2482. But we see a lot of themes

  2483. Where it's

2484. So the theme of David

2485. Would be a clear one

  2486. Where

  2487. Jesus is David

  2488. And then we have

  2489. Other themes

  2490. Like covenant

  2491. Where

  2492. Jesus isn't

  2493. The covenant

  2494. But he's the blood

  2495. Of the new covenant

  2496. So how does Jesus

  2497. Relate to

  2498. The people of God

  2499. In that way

  2500. Yeah so

  2501. I think

  2502. In some respects

2503. I think we see Jesus

  2504. As fulfillment of

  2505. But in other respects

  2506. Too

2507. I think we see Jesus

  2508. As like

  2509. Not the church

2510. But there is a definite

  2511. Like relation

  2512. With the church

  2513. Where

  2514. I think it was

  2515. With Saul

  2516. Of Tarsus

  2517. Right

  2518. Where he's like

2519. Why do you persecute me

  2520. Right

  2521. He has

  2522. He has

  2523. Such a

  2524. Connection

  2525. With his church

  2526. Right

  2527. As his people

  2528. It's like

2529. What you do to them

2530. Is like doing it to me

  2531. Right

  2532. And so I think

  2533. I think that's what we see

  2534. I don't know if I would say

2535. Like the church is Jesus

  2536. Per se

  2537. But like

  2538. There is this connection

  2539. That Jesus has

  2540. With his people

  2541. And the church

  2542. So that's to me

2543. If you follow the thread

  2544. Of remnant

  2545. Yeah

2546. You have a clear case

  2547. Where that one

  2548. You do get

  2549. Jesus is the remnant

  2550. And I was wondering

  2551. Yeah

  2552. Yeah

  2553. No I know

2554. When we were talking earlier

  2555. Like that would be

2556. That would be a great

  2557. Biblical theology study

  2558. Up to see

  2559. What do we see

  2560. As the outcome

  2561. Of the remnant

  2562. Through that

  2563. So

  2564. Yeah

  2565. Yeah

  2566. No it's a great question

  2567. Ben

  2568. Great question

  2569. Yeah Laura

  2570. And also

  2571. Just thinking about

  2572. Ben's question

  2573. Makes me think

2574. That there are many ways

  2575. In which Jesus

  2576. Recapitulated

  2577. Israel's journey

  2578. He went

  2579. Yes

2580. He came out of Egypt

  2581. He

  2582. There are places

  2583. As you can see

2584. In the book of Matthew

  2585. Where he

  2586. There's a feeding

  2587. There's a great feast

2588. And then he crosses water

  2589. And that happens

  2590. Twice in Matthew

  2591. So in many ways

  2592. In which he fulfilled

2593. What the nation of Israel

  2594. Was supposed to do

  2595. Right

2596. So he fulfilled the law

  2597. He did what

  2598. Israel could not

  2599. That's right

  2600. And then I guess

  2601. The question is

2602. How does that go forward

  2603. Into the church

2604. Like I can clearly see

  2605. Him as representing Israel

2606. But then how does he

  2607. Which doesn't

  2608. I'm not an interesting

  2609. Ben's question

  2610. Yeah

  2611. Yeah

  2612. Yeah

  2613. It's interesting

  2614. Then what

  2615. Then what goes forward

  2616. Yeah

  2617. In a way

  2618. He becomes a new

  2619. Abraham

  2620. Right

  2621. The father

  2622. Of a new people

  2623. I know

  2624. But it's continuous too

  2625. So yeah

  2626. Yeah

  2627. No that's a great observation

  2628. Yeah

  2629. But he's made

2630. I think it also speaks

  2631. To how

  2632. Theologically

  2633. We become united

  2634. With the Christ

  2635. And we become

  2636. One with him

  2637. And then

  2638. What we are

  2639. He took on

2640. And so that we might

  2641. Become part of him

2642. And so he is the church

  2643. And he served

  2644. In that sense

  2645. Yes

  2646. He perfected it

  2647. And then when God

  2648. Sees us

  2649. He sees him

  2650. And eventually

2651. We will come like that

  2652. And participate

  2653. In the divine

  2654. Relationships

2655. Of the father and the son

  2656. And the holy spirit

  2657. Having him

  2658. Yeah

  2659. Yeah

2660. I was going to add

  2661. Also about the bride

  2662. That I

  2663. You know

  2664. Scripture is saturated

  2665. With both male

  2666. And female images

  2667. Of the ideal followers

  2668. Of Jesus

  2669. And it's not

  2670. Just masculine

  2671. It's not just feminine

  2672. You get all

  2673. Of these different images

  2674. And God also

  2675. Will use

  2676. You know

  2677. Those images

  2678. In many ways

  2679. I mean Jesus

  2680. Says

  2681. I'm like a mother

2682. And he wants to gather

  2683. Her kids together

  2684. And you see God

  2685. And I think that

  2686. Gets back to

  2687. The early chapter

  2688. Of Genesis

  2689. Where men and women

  2690. Are both made

2691. In the image of God

  2692. And they both

  2693. Reflect his

  2694. Glory

  2695. His likeness

  2696. So individually

  2697. In a beautiful way

  2698. Amen

2699. I think I was going to add

  2700. Too

  2701. For the

  2702. The bride that was

  2703. I don't think

  2704. It's instructive

  2705. On

  2706. So much

  2707. So much instructive

  2708. On how

  2709. The husband

  2710. Should relate

  2711. To his wife

  2712. As it is

  2713. An illustration

  2714. Of how God

  2715. Relates to us

  2716. In a way

  2717. That a healthy

  2718. Marriage

  2719. Has a husband

  2720. Who

  2721. You know

  2722. Loves his wife

  2723. And you know

  2724. I mean

2725. Like most of the guys

  2726. That I talk to

  2727. About their relationship

  2728. Like they just

  2729. Want to hang out

  2730. With her

  2731. You know

  2732. That's so cool

  2733. And it's

  2734. It's not

  2735. It's not a chore

  2736. It's what

2737. What they want to do

  2738. You know

  2739. In the same way

  2740. You know

  2741. God with the church

2742. He wants to hang out

  2743. Yeah

  2744. That's beautiful

  2745. Amen

  2746. Yeah

  2747. Yeah

  2748. I really like

  2749. How you know

  2750. This is

  2751. God is doing

  2752. All of this

  2753. Amen

  2754. Right

  2755. It is his work

  2756. All the way through

  2757. Glory be

  2758. To him alone

  2759. Anything else

  2760. Well

  2761. Thank you everybody

  2762. We appreciate it
