  1. Well, good morning again, church. Our sermon text today is Philippians chapter 4, verses 1 through 9.

    Philippians 4:1–9

  2. Let me invite you to turn there. I believe that's page 922 or 923, somewhere in there,

  3. in the Pew Bible. We'll have it on the screens as I read it in just a minute, but it'll be helpful

  4. to have it open during the sermon as we study and listen to this text together. So, as we turn there,

  5. let me pray for us, and then I'll read.

  6. Father, we do ask as we come to your word that you would grant our minds understanding

  7. and you would grant our hearts a receptivity to what you are saying to us. Father, thank you

  8. that you give us a word outside of ourselves from you that allows us to know you and to live for you

  9. and to be recipients of a great saving grace that you've accomplished for us in Jesus.

  10. So, help us as we attend to your word to live into all these things by your spirit. We pray this in

  11. Christ's name. Amen. All right. Philippians chapter 4, verses 1 through 9. Paul writes,

    Philippians 4:1–9

  12. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord,

  13. my beloved. I entreat you, Odia, and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Yes, I ask you also,

  14. true companion, help these women who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with

  15. Clement and the rest of my fellow workers whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord

  16. always. Again, I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord

  17. is at hand. Do not be anxious about anything. But in everything, by prayer and supplication,

  18. with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all

  19. understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true,

  20. whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable,

  21. if there's any excellence, if there's anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

  22. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things,

  23. and the God of peace will be with you. All right, so we're coming to the end of this letter of

  24. Philippians. And at the beginning of chapter four, Paul's clearly bringing things to a conclusion,

  25. isn't he? Like many of his letters, he ends with a series of brief but profound exhortations. And

  26. here in Philippians, if we were to ask if there's any kind of central or unifying theme to these first

  27. nine verses of chapter four, the answer to that question would be in verse one. Now, if you notice,

  28. the editors of the ESV, the translation we have in the pews, they put a topic heading between verse

  29. one and verses two through nine. And that's understandable because verse one does kind of

  30. wrap up what Paul had been saying in chapter three. But in light of that, we might miss the fact that

  31. verse one also sets up the exhortations in verse four. It's a bit of a hinge verse. And that verse

  32. points to a unifying theme in what Paul says in these verses that we just read. And that unifying theme is

  33. one that we've heard before in this book. All the way back in chapter one, verse 27. Do you remember what

  34. Paul said there? Turn back a page if you have a Bible open. Turn back to Philippians chapter one, verse 27.

  35. Paul writes,

  36. Now back here in chapter four, verse one, Paul says,

  37. Therefore, now what's he referring to there? Well, the previous two verses.

  38. Therefore, because you're citizens of heaven,

  39. because you're a colony of God's kingdom on earth,

  40. because you're awaiting the arrival of the Lord Jesus, the one who will

  41. subject all things to himself, and by that same power,

  42. raise our lowly body to be like his glorious body. Therefore, my brothers,

  43. which means brothers and sisters, right?

  44. Whom I love and long for, my joy and crown. What does he say?

  45. Stand firm. Stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. So, Paul comes back to his main theme

  46. of this book. Live as citizens of heaven, as citizens of the gospel, and stand firm.

  47. Bonnie Thurston, in her commentary on Philippians, says that this term,

  48. stand firm, suggests the picture of a soldier who does not leave his post.

  49. Or you might think of an analogy or a picture from nature,

  50. like a mighty tree, a mighty stately oak,

  51. just standing firm in the midst of the wind and the storm and the weather.

  52. Like we read earlier in Psalm 1, right?

  53. Like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season,

  54. and its leaf does not wither.

  55. Beloved, Paul says, stand firm.

  56. You know, when you read church history, you can see how there's always the danger

  57. in every age for the church to fall prey to a kind of cultural captivity,

  58. to simply become a mirror of the prevailing context,

  59. rather than salt and light within our context.

  60. In other words, there's always the danger that the church will forget

  61. that ultimately we aren't citizens of Jerusalem or Athens or Rome or England

  62. or Nigeria or Korea or the United States.

  63. Ultimately, our citizenship is in heaven.

  64. We are the people of the risen king.

  65. We are the people of the new creation right in the midst of the old.

  66. And we need to keep our integrity.

  67. No matter how countercultural following Jesus becomes,

  68. no matter how countercultural it becomes,

  69. we need to be who we are

  70. and not succumb to social pressure or compromise.

  71. But what exactly does standing firm look like?

  72. In our age, in our time, in our context,

  73. how do we need to be standing firm?

  74. Well, look at what Paul says again in verse 1.

  75. He says,

  76. Stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

  77. Now, a number of commentators agree that that little word thus

  78. is actually pointing ahead to what he says in verses 2 through 9.

  79. So the apostle is saying,

  80. Stand firm in this way.

  81. Stand firm like this.

  82. I'm going to show you how you want to stand firm.

  83. Now, there are three paragraphs in verses 2 through 9, as you notice,

  84. and each one of them is telling us then how to stand firm.

  85. And we'll look at each one in turn.

  86. What does it mean to kind of keep our integrity,

  87. to be citizens of heaven in our time, in our age?

  88. Well, the apostle says,

  89. First, we must stand firm in a contentious age by being peacemakers.

  90. Stand firm in a contentious age by being peacemakers.

  91. This is verses 2 through 3.

  92. So here we learn of Euodia and Syntyche,

  93. who are two of Paul's co-laborers in the gospel at Philippi.

  94. And apparently, they're having trouble agreeing in the Lord.

  95. Now, we don't know exactly what their disagreement is about,

  96. but I think we can be fairly certain what it's not about.

  97. Their disagreement, I don't think,

  98. is about what Paul will call in 1 Corinthians 15,

  99. matters of first importance.

  100. That is, it doesn't seem that Euodia and Syntyche are having a falling out

  101. about the core of the gospel message,

  102. that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures,

  103. that he was buried,

  104. that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures,

  105. that righteousness before God can only be found through faith in Christ.

  106. Now, why can we be sure that they're not having a falling out

  107. over matters of first importance?

  108. Because we see how Paul handles these sorts of issues

  109. in other places in his letter.

  110. When it's a matter of first importance,

  111. Paul will correct and instruct,

  112. and he even, at times, rebukes when necessary.

  113. And yet, that's not how he handles this disagreement.

  114. So, I think we're safe to conclude

  115. that Euodia and Syntyche

  116. must have been disagreeing on a matter

  117. that fell more into the realm of wisdom

  118. or prudence or Christian freedom.

  119. Maybe we can speculate a little bit

  120. about what they were disagreeing about.

  121. Maybe Euodia was excited

  122. to go with a team from Philippi

  123. and plant a church in nearby Amphipolis.

  124. So, she comes to the congregational meeting

  125. with a great idea.

  126. Let's go.

  127. Who wants to join me?

  128. Oh, but perhaps Syntyche had a good reason

  129. to point their missionary efforts

  130. in the opposite direction toward Neapolis.

  131. And suddenly, the church is at loggerheads.

  132. Which way do we go?

  133. Where do we invest our energies and our time?

  134. This way or that?

  135. Now, if you've been around the church long enough,

  136. or just around people long enough,

  137. you know that disagreements can crop up

  138. over all sorts of things,

  139. a lot of them much less noble

  140. than where we should plant a church, right?

  141. And we live in a contentious age

  142. where disagreement and outrage and offense

  143. and falling out,

  144. it's like the air that we breathe.

  145. How countercultural it is

  146. for us to have a conversation face-to-face

  147. where we hear one another out,

  148. where we clothe one another in good intentions,

  149. where we try to find common ground.

  150. Ah, but that's not easy, is it?

  151. We need to help one another.

  152. And in verse three, Paul says just that.

  153. He says,

  154. I ask you also, true companion,

  155. help these women.

  156. Now, we don't know who Paul's referring to here.

  157. The word companion, as your footnote says in the ESV,

  158. that could actually be a proper name, Syzygous.

  159. So Paul could be saying,

  160. hey, Syzygous, I want you to step in

  161. and help resolve this conflict.

  162. But either way, whether it's a proper name

  163. or whether Paul just is saying,

  164. hey, companion, help them out.

  165. Either way, the Philippians must have known

  166. who Paul was talking about.

  167. And he's saying, hey, come alongside

  168. these two godly women

  169. and help them come to agreement in the Lord.

  170. And that phrase, help them to agree in the Lord,

  171. it's the same as chapter two, verse two,

  172. have the same mind.

  173. Help them work through their differences

  174. and come to agreement.

  175. In other words,

  176. Paul is calling us

  177. to the work of peacemaking in the church,

  178. the work of reconciliation.

  179. Now, what does that look like?

  180. Paul doesn't say as much here,

  181. but as we look across the New Testament,

  182. it looks like listening to one another.

  183. It looks like trying hard to find common ground.

  184. It looks like not being afraid

  185. to admit where you're wrong.

  186. It looks like not being afraid

  187. to gently point out

  188. where you think others are wrong.

  189. It looks like examining the issues

  190. in light of Scripture.

  191. It looks like asking

  192. whether we're valuing what God values

  193. in this situation.

  194. It looks like inviting repentance

  195. and forgiveness where necessary.

  196. It looks like forging agreements

  197. and ways forward

  198. that honor both parties,

  199. if possible.

  200. Now, if you want to learn more

  201. about the kind of work

  202. of peacemaking in the church,

  203. of reconciliation,

  204. Ken Sandy wrote a book

  205. called The Peacemaker

  206. a number of years ago,

  207. which is quite good,

  208. and I would recommend it to you.

  209. The Peacemaker by Ken Sandy

  210. will give you a great start

  211. on how to think biblically

  212. about all this.

  213. But to be sure,

  214. even as I just listed

  215. some of those basic principles,

  216. we can acknowledge

  217. that peacemaking is hard work.

  218. It's a lot easier

  219. to just be a peacekeeper, right?

  220. To just agree,

  221. to just sort of go along

  222. with the flow,

  223. to just avoid conflict

  224. or confrontation

  225. or hard conversations.

  226. That's a much easier path,

  227. at least in the short term.

  228. But to really help make peace

  229. and not just keep peace,

  230. that takes time and energy

  231. and sometimes sacrifice.

  232. It's messy to jump

  233. into a disagreement,

  234. isn't it?

  235. And oftentimes,

  236. when the mud is getting

  237. thrown around,

  238. some of it hits you.

  239. And in those moments

  240. when the work of peacemaking

  241. is hard,

  242. we'll want to just give up.

  243. It's easier just to write people off

  244. to say it's hopeless

  245. to give up.

  246. But we need to remember

  247. in those moments,

  248. we need to remember

  249. that when we're in the mix

  250. of peacemaking,

  251. whether,

  252. especially when it's

  253. with fellow church members,

  254. when we're in the mix

  255. of trying to bring peace

  256. between fellow church members,

  257. and maybe that's where

  258. you're at right now.

  259. You know,

  260. maybe you're working

  261. through something

  262. with two people

  263. in your small group.

  264. Or maybe you're trying

  265. to help a couple

  266. of Christian friends.

  267. Or maybe you're working

  268. through conflict

  269. in your marriage.

  270. When you're in the mix,

  271. remember.

  272. When you're in the mix

  273. and you just want to check out

  274. and say,

  275. I'm done with this,

  276. remember.

  277. Paul says that the names

  278. of the people

  279. you're helping,

  280. their names are written

  281. in the very book of life.

  282. That's how he ends

  283. in verse 3.

  284. You know,

  285. these people aren't just

  286. some insignificant anybody's

  287. that it would just be

  288. better to ignore

  289. or write off.

  290. That's the world's

  291. way of thinking.

  292. No.

  293. God,

  294. from all eternity,

  295. set his saving love

  296. on these fellow Christians.

  297. He saw them in their sin

  298. and sent his own son

  299. to bleed and die

  300. to rescue them

  301. and redeem them

  302. from wrath.

  303. He sent his own spirit

  304. to liberate them

  305. from unbelief

  306. and seal them

  307. as his own.

  308. You see,

  309. to have your name

  310. written in the book

  311. of life,

  312. that's a metaphor

  313. found throughout scripture

  314. of the way in which

  315. God personally

  316. and eternally

  317. knows and loves

  318. and saves his people.

  319. So when the work

  320. gets hard,

  321. when the relationships

  322. get fraught,

  323. when you're in the midst

  324. of conflict

  325. and mud is hitting you

  326. as it's getting thrown

  327. across the room,

  328. remember that the people

  329. before you,

  330. their names

  331. are on the guest list

  332. of the greatest gala

  333. in all eternity.

  334. their names

  335. are etched

  336. into the walls

  337. of the most

  338. magnificent monument

  339. in all of redemptive history.

  340. They are written

  341. in the book of life

  342. and they are worth

  343. the effort.

  344. So Paul is saying

  345. we have to stand firm.

  346. We have to stand firm

  347. by being peacemakers

  348. in a contentious age.

  349. The church is the place

  350. where we work through

  351. our differences

  352. in love.

  353. But our text goes on.

  354. There's a second way

  355. that we're called

  356. to stand firm here.

  357. In verses 4 through 7,

  358. we're called

  359. to stand firm

  360. in an anxious age

  361. by being people

  362. of prayer.

  363. Stand firm

  364. in an anxious age

  365. by being people

  366. of prayer.

  367. Now,

  368. when Paul says

  369. in verse 6,

  370. don't be anxious

  371. about anything,

  372. we have to be clear

  373. what he does

  374. and doesn't mean.

  375. On the one hand,

  376. Paul's not saying

  377. that every anxious thought

  378. that you have

  379. is a sinful thought.

  380. Stop it.

  381. Knock it off.

  382. You're disobeying God.

  383. Right?

  384. Paul himself expressed anxiety

  385. back in chapter 2,

  386. verse 28,

  387. when Epaphroditus was sick.

  388. So Paul isn't meaning

  389. this verse

  390. to kind of bury us

  391. in a bunch of false guilt.

  392. No,

  393. it's meant to acknowledge

  394. our anxious hearts

  395. and to invite us

  396. into something new.

  397. We live in a very anxious age,

  398. don't we?

  399. And in a good way,

  400. I think we've come

  401. to learn a lot

  402. about how anxiety works

  403. and how sometimes anxiety

  404. can actually become

  405. clinical and persistent.

  406. And we should be thankful

  407. that we have psychiatrists

  408. and doctors

  409. who through common grace

  410. can help us.

  411. So none of what Paul

  412. is saying here

  413. is denying or refuting

  414. any of that.

  415. The Bible,

  416. after all,

  417. teaches that we're

  418. embodied humans

  419. and we need to attend

  420. to our bodies

  421. and be thankful

  422. for the help

  423. that comes,

  424. be thankful

  425. for the help

  426. that comes

  427. through the help

  428. of exercise

  429. or medicine

  430. or just a good night's sleep.

  431. But along

  432. with these good gifts,

  433. what are the spiritual practices

  434. that help us

  435. confront anxiety?

  436. Now,

  437. don't get me wrong.

  438. We should eat,

  439. sleep,

  440. exercise,

  441. and even take medicine

  442. when necessary

  443. all to the glory of God.

  444. I'm not suggesting

  445. we have sort of

  446. our physical life

  447. over here

  448. and our spiritual life

  449. over here.

  450. No,

  451. we're whole people.

  452. We're body and soul.

  453. But too often,

  454. we approach anxiety

  455. without any reference

  456. to God.

  457. And what a silly thing

  458. to do.

  459. Because in God,

  460. first Paul says,

  461. in God,

  462. we have a boundless

  463. source of joy.

  464. Paul says,

  465. rejoice in the Lord

  466. always.

  467. Again,

  468. I'll say it,

  469. rejoice.

  470. Even if our circumstances

  471. don't provide much material

  472. for rejoicing,

  473. we can rejoice.

  474. Why?

  475. Because one real glimpse

  476. at the Lord

  477. shows us

  478. how much joy

  479. is really ours.

  480. One good glimpse

  481. at the Lord

  482. helps us to see

  483. that our sins

  484. are forgiven,

  485. that our future

  486. is unimaginably glorious.

  487. And right now,

  488. the Lord is using

  489. even our trials

  490. to make us beautiful.

  491. But in God,

  492. we don't just have

  493. a source of joy,

  494. a source where

  495. we ought to be rejoicing.

  496. We also have

  497. a sovereign king.

  498. In everything,

  499. by prayer

  500. and supplication

  501. with thanksgiving,

  502. let your requests

  503. be made known

  504. to God,

  505. Paul says.

  506. Now,

  507. I know my own heart

  508. and I know

  509. what it's like

  510. to struggle

  511. with anxieties.

  512. And you know,

  513. for me,

  514. much of my anxiety

  515. stems from feeling

  516. like I'm in control.

  517. That it all comes down

  518. to me

  519. and what I do

  520. or don't do.

  521. And when I'm in that

  522. mode of thinking,

  523. it makes me very anxious.

  524. You know,

  525. but sometimes

  526. we can get anxious

  527. because we feel like

  528. we're not in control.

  529. When things are

  530. out of control,

  531. we think,

  532. who will help me?

  533. Who will keep me safe?

  534. But you see,

  535. friends,

  536. in prayer,

  537. in supplication,

  538. in asking God

  539. for things,

  540. we are remembering

  541. that we are creatures

  542. and God is the creator.

  543. We are subjects

  544. and God is the sovereign.

  545. We aren't in control.

  546. God is.

  547. And because of the cross,

  548. we,

  549. creatures,

  550. subjects,

  551. because of what Jesus

  552. has done,

  553. we actually have

  554. God's ear.

  555. He listens to us

  556. and he answers us.

  557. Not always the way we expect,

  558. not always when we expect,

  559. but he answers the prayers

  560. of his beloved.

  561. God is the prophet.

  562. And notice,

  563. Paul reminds us

  564. to pepper our prayers

  565. with what?

  566. With thanksgiving.

  567. You know,

  568. long before Barnes & Noble

  569. sold gratitude journals,

  570. true confessions,

  571. who has a gratitude journal?

  572. I'm kidding,

  573. don't raise your hand.

  574. Long before Barnes & Noble

  575. sold gratitude journals,

  576. the Christian church

  577. knew the power

  578. of thanksgiving.

  579. So we rejoice

  580. and we give thanks

  581. and we ask,

  582. knowing that our God

  583. is the sovereign source

  584. of everlasting joy

  585. and he has placed his love

  586. on us

  587. through his son

  588. and in us

  589. through his spirit.

  590. And through prayer,

  591. we're promised this.

  592. We're promised

  593. the peace of God

  594. which surpasses

  595. all understanding

  596. will guard your hearts

  597. and your minds

  598. in Christ Jesus.

  599. Now realize,

  600. friends,

  601. you may still have anxieties.

  602. They will come and go,

  603. but

  604. through the practice

  605. of prayer,

  606. there will be

  607. a new sentry

  608. at the door

  609. of your heart,

  610. a new guard

  611. standing watch.

  612. Not the old

  613. idol of control

  614. or whatever it is,

  615. but the new reality

  616. of God's peace.

  617. God's peace

  618. like a watchman

  619. at the gate

  620. residing there

  621. letting you know

  622. that all will be well

  623. through the night.

  624. Even through

  625. the darkest hours,

  626. all will be well.

  627. Do you know that peace?

  628. Maybe today,

  629. this God,

  630. this God of peace

  631. is inviting you,

  632. is calling you

  633. to come to him,

  634. to believe in his son

  635. who died for your sins,

  636. to entrust your life

  637. to his lordship.

  638. I know it's hard

  639. to let go

  640. of control,

  641. isn't it?

  642. But friends,

  643. if God is

  644. who he says he is,

  645. if Jesus is

  646. who he says he is,

  647. then giving your life

  648. to him

  649. is the most reasonable

  650. thing in all the world.

  651. and it comes

  652. with the gift

  653. of peace.

  654. Not just a temporary

  655. peace that comes

  656. and goes,

  657. but peace with God,

  658. a peace that surpasses

  659. understanding.

  660. Maybe you're here

  661. and you've been

  662. considering Christianity

  663. for a while.

  664. You've been sort of

  665. thinking this thing out.

  666. But maybe it's time.

  667. Why not today

  668. take the step

  669. and entrust your life

  670. to him?

  671. Let him make good

  672. on his promises

  673. to you

  674. through his son.

  675. So then we've seen

  676. how this text

  677. calls us to stand firm

  678. in a contentious age

  679. by being peacemakers

  680. and to stand firm

  681. in an anxious age

  682. by being people of prayer.

  683. Third and last then,

  684. we are called

  685. to stand firm

  686. in a distracted age

  687. by being people

  688. of practice.

  689. Stand firm

  690. in a distracted age

  691. by being people

  692. of practice.

  693. This is verses 8 and 9.

  694. Now imagine the background

  695. of these verses.

  696. You know,

  697. a Roman colony

  698. like Philippi

  699. would have been filled

  700. with messages, right?

  701. Political messages

  702. about the Roman Empire

  703. and emperor.

  704. Religious messages

  705. about gods

  706. and temples

  707. and favors

  708. and sacrifices.

  709. Economic messages

  710. about work

  711. and food shortages

  712. and trade negotiations.

  713. And of course,

  714. that's all in the mix

  715. of the typical news

  716. of everyday life.

  717. The neighbor who got sick,

  718. the baby that was born,

  719. the marriage that fell apart,

  720. the shop that just opened

  721. down the street

  722. that sells a great falafel

  723. or whatever it is.

  724. A life filled

  725. with messages,

  726. filled with noise,

  727. filled with all sorts

  728. of distractions.

  729. And if that was true

  730. in the first century,

  731. friends,

  732. how much more is that true

  733. in the 21st century?

  734. How much more true

  735. is that

  736. when our smartphones

  737. bombard us 24-7

  738. with messages

  739. and noise

  740. and distractions

  741. the likes of which

  742. people could not

  743. have imagined

  744. even 20 years ago?

  745. And of course,

  746. the irony is

  747. that even as our inboxes

  748. and smartphones

  749. get fuller and fuller

  750. and fuller and fuller

  751. and fuller,

  752. personally and interpersonally,

  753. we seem to get emptier

  754. and emptier

  755. and emptier

  756. and emptier.

  757. We have practically

  758. limitless knowledge

  759. at our fingertips,

  760. but often we don't

  761. seem the wiser.

  762. We have practically

  763. limitless capacity

  764. to communicate

  765. with anyone

  766. at any time,

  767. but we don't seem

  768. the happier.

  769. So what's the answer?

  770. Reject technology?

  771. Try to turn the clock

  772. back to 1980

  773. when no one

  774. had a smartphone?

  775. Some of you are thinking,

  776. I love the 80s.

  777. That was my time.

  778. I was in my prime

  779. in my 80s.

  780. Let's go back.

  781. But no,

  782. that's not what Paul says.

  783. Notice Paul doesn't

  784. tell the Philippians,

  785. look,

  786. here's what you gotta do.

  787. Move out of the city,

  788. create a commune,

  789. and never interact

  790. with the world.

  791. No.

  792. He says practice.

  793. Create a new way

  794. of being

  795. right where you are.

  796. What you've learned

  797. and received

  798. and heard

  799. and seen in me,

  800. practice these things.

  801. Put them into motion.

  802. Work at them.

  803. Let them shape

  804. your time

  805. and your choices.

  806. Create a new way

  807. of being

  808. right where you are.

  809. You see,

  810. standing firm

  811. as the church

  812. in a distracted age

  813. won't happen automatically.

  814. If we don't have

  815. concrete practices

  816. for following Christ,

  817. then we will inevitably

  818. be blown and tossed

  819. by the myriad messages

  820. swirling around us.

  821. If we don't have

  822. concrete practices

  823. for shaping our lives

  824. into lives

  825. that honor Christ,

  826. then we will be shaped

  827. by the forces around us

  828. and it won't be

  829. in a way

  830. that's honoring to Christ.

  831. Let me give you

  832. an example.

  833. The world around us,

  834. I think you'll agree,

  835. is wildly consumeristic,

  836. right?

  837. Descartes famously said,

  838. I think,

  839. therefore I am.

  840. I think today

  841. our motto might be,

  842. I buy,

  843. therefore I am.

  844. Right?

  845. That's sort of

  846. the rationale

  847. behind every commercial

  848. you will ever listen to

  849. or watch.

  850. If I have the latest clothes,

  851. the latest piece

  852. of technology,

  853. then I'm happy,

  854. then I'm good,

  855. then I'm somebody.

  856. Well,

  857. as Christians,

  858. what practices

  859. are we going to embody

  860. that push against

  861. this inevitably shaping

  862. force around us?

  863. Or are we just going to be

  864. swept away

  865. in the consumeristic tide?

  866. What practices

  867. will we put in place

  868. that we can do

  869. that help carve out

  870. a new way of being

  871. right where we are?

  872. You know,

  873. the early Christians

  874. were known

  875. as being radically

  876. generous.

  877. What if every month

  878. you had some regular

  879. practice of generosity

  880. or giving

  881. that kind of pushed

  882. against the distraction

  883. of consumerism?

  884. What if you had a practice

  885. that helped you

  886. live out the truth

  887. that we aren't defined

  888. by what we buy

  889. or what we own,

  890. but we're defined

  891. by what we've been given?

  892. And what if you made

  893. a practice of giving

  894. to others

  895. in a way that

  896. enfleshed that reality

  897. into a practice?

  898. Or maybe another example.

  899. We live in a very noisy age,

  900. don't we?

  901. You know,

  902. with a smartphone

  903. and earbuds,

  904. we can literally go

  905. every waking hour

  906. listening to something.

  907. I know a lot of teenagers

  908. who spend every sleeping hour

  909. listening to something.

  910. And yet,

  911. for all of the content

  912. that we listen to,

  913. for all the talk,

  914. are we really

  915. more reflective people?

  916. Are we wiser people?

  917. Are we more creative people?

  918. What if for maybe

  919. just five or ten minutes

  920. a day

  921. you practiced

  922. the biblical discipline

  923. of silence?

  924. Silence.

  925. Rather than talking

  926. or listening

  927. to other people talk,

  928. what if you simply

  929. got quiet before God

  930. and listened?

  931. I love the verse

  932. at the end of Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  933. chapter 2

  934. that says,

  935. the Lord

  936. is in his holy temple.

  937. Let all the earth

  938. keep silence

  939. before him.

  940. Maybe just five minutes,

  941. maybe just ten minutes,

  942. we can actually obey

  943. that verse in the Bible.

  944. You know,

  945. there's one practice

  946. that the Apostle Paul

  947. mentions right in this passage.

  948. It's verse 8.

  949. The Apostle lists

  950. a whole range

  951. of virtues.

  952. Whatever's true,

  953. honorable,

  954. just,

  955. pure,

  956. lovely,

  957. commendable,

  958. excellent,

  959. worthy of praise.

  960. And then he says,

  961. think about these things.

  962. That's actually

  963. a spiritual practice.

  964. Think about it.

  965. What do you fill

  966. your mind with

  967. during the day?

  968. What news programs

  969. do you watch?

  970. What music

  971. do you listen to?

  972. What literature

  973. do you read?

  974. What are you watching

  975. on YouTube

  976. or TikTok?

  977. What are you looking

  978. at on Instagram?

  979. What are you reading

  980. on Facebook?

  981. Hold it up

  982. to the eight virtues

  983. that Paul lists here.

  984. How does it measure up?

  985. Is it true?

  986. Is it honorable?

  987. Is it just?

  988. Is it pure?

  989. Now,

  990. I know everything

  991. on TikTok

  992. nails each

  993. of those eight categories,

  994. so you're good.

  995. But what about

  996. the other stuff

  997. that you consume

  998. during the week?

  999. What practices

  1000. are you going

  1001. to put in place

  1002. so that your mind

  1003. isn't constantly

  1004. bombarded

  1005. with content

1006. that is less than true

  1007. and honorable

  1008. and just

  1009. and so on?

  1010. What practices

  1011. are you going

  1012. to put in place

  1013. so that you can

  1014. develop a sense

  1015. of looking at content

  1016. and discerning

  1017. within it

  1018. what is true

  1019. and just

  1020. and honorable

  1021. and so on?

  1022. What things

  1023. do you need

  1024. to cut out

  1025. of your life

  1026. altogether

  1027. starting today?

  1028. What things

  1029. do you maybe

  1030. need to take

  1031. a week or two

  1032. break from?

  1033. I've had to do

  1034. that at times.

  1035. Sometimes I find

  1036. myself spending

  1037. so much time

  1038. doing something

  1039. that's like

  1040. kind of neutral.

  1041. It's not bad

  1042. but it's not

  1043. really good.

  1044. I'm just like

  1045. I think I need

  1046. to take a break

  1047. from this

  1048. for a while.

  1049. What things

  1050. do you need

  1051. to make a practice

  1052. of limiting

  1053. on a daily

  1054. or weekly basis?

  1055. If we want

  1056. to live lives

  1057. that are true

  1058. honorable

  1059. just

  1060. pure

  1061. lovely

  1062. commendable

  1063. excellent

  1064. worthy of praise

  1065. don't you want

  1066. to live a life

  1067. like that?

  1068. Then those

  1069. are the things

  1070. we need

  1071. to be setting

  1072. our minds

  1073. upon.

  1074. That's what

  1075. we need

  1076. to be thinking

  1077. about.

  1078. You know

  1079. if you want

  1080. to be a top

  1081. tier athlete

  1082. you can't

  1083. eat McDonald's

  1084. three times

  1085. a day.

  1086. I tried it

  1087. it doesn't

  1088. work.

  1089. I'm kidding

  1090. I didn't

  1091. try it.

  1092. Your body

  1093. wasn't made

  1094. to run

  1095. on fast food.

  1096. It's the same

  1097. with your soul.

  1098. You can't

  1099. fill your mind

  1100. with the equivalent

  1101. of fast food

  1102. or worse

  1103. and expect

  1104. to live

  1105. the kind

  1106. of life

  1107. of freedom

  1108. and beauty

  1109. that God

  1110. designed you

  1111. for.

  1112. And ultimately

  1113. do you know

  1114. what God

  1115. designed you

  1116. for?

  1117. Do you know

  1118. why God

  1119. made you?

  1120. He designed

  1121. you to reflect

  1122. his own glory.

  1123. The God

  1124. whose glory

  1125. could shake

  1126. the mountains

  1127. to dust

  1128. and melt

  1129. the stars

  1130. that God

  1131. wants his

  1132. beauty

  1133. to shine

  1134. through you

  1135. and through

  1136. your particular

  1137. life.

  1138. And that's

  1139. why we must

  1140. make it a

  1141. practice

  1142. to regularly

  1143. meditate

  1144. and think

  1145. upon not

  1146. just the

  1147. things that

  1148. are true

  1149. and honorable

  1150. and just

  1151. and so on

  1152. but we have

  1153. to regularly

  1154. spend time

  1155. thinking about

  1156. the one

  1157. who is true

  1158. and honorable

  1159. and just

  1160. and pure.

  1161. We must

  1162. set our minds

  1163. on God

  1164. himself

  1165. as he's

  1166. revealed himself

  1167. in scripture

  1168. and above

  1169. all in his

  1170. son.

  1171. That's the

  1172. practice

  1173. above all

  1174. practices

  1175. friends.

  1176. If you have

  1177. time for

  1178. nothing else

  1179. during the

  1180. week

  1181. take the

  1182. time

  1183. to regularly

  1184. get

  1185. let me

  1186. suggest this

  1187. to you

  1188. take the

  1189. time

  1190. to regularly

  1191. get

  1192. with just

  1193. a small

  1194. passage

  1195. from the

  1196. gospels.

  1197. You know

  1198. our modern

  1199. translations

  1200. give us

  1201. these little

  1202. units

  1203. they kind

  1204. of break

  1205. it down

  1206. for us

  1207. just pick

  1208. one of

  1209. those

  1210. and read

  1211. it slowly

  1212. not just

  1213. for information

  1214. about Jesus

  1215. but to

  1216. actually

  1217. commune

  1218. with him

  1219. and to

  1220. speak

  1221. with him

  1222. and to

  1223. let him

  1224. speak

  1225. to you

  1226. slow

  1227. down

  1228. and gaze

  1229. on the

  1230. beauty

  1231. and wisdom

  1232. and justice

  1233. and compassion

  1234. of Jesus

  1235. set your

  1236. mind on

  1237. him

  1238. let him

  1239. search you

  1240. and fill

  1241. your mind

  1242. commune

  1243. with him

  1244. as if

  1245. he is

  1246. present with

  1247. you

  1248. because he

  1249. is

  1250. and you

  1251. will become

  1252. more and

  1253. more like

  1254. him

  1255. more and

  1256. more lovely

  1257. more and

  1258. more honorable

  1259. more and

  1260. more true

  1261. more and

  1262. more pure

  1263. and so on

  1264. now is it

  1265. challenging to

  1266. live a life

  1267. of Christian

  1268. practice

  1269. in a

  1270. distracted

  1271. age

  1272. you bet

  1273. it is

  1274. it is

  1275. much easier

  1276. just to call

  1277. ourselves

  1278. Christians

  1279. come to

  1280. church

  1281. for one

  1282. hour

  1283. on Sunday

  1284. and then

  1285. live and

  1286. think

  1287. like the

  1288. rest of

  1289. the world

  1290. for the

  1291. rest of

  1292. the week

  1293. isn't it

  1294. living a

  1295. life of

  1296. Christian

  1297. practice

  1298. is a

  1299. challenge

  1300. but listen

  1301. to what

  1302. Paul says

  1303. at the

  1304. end of

  1305. our

  1306. passage

  1307. he says

  1308. practice

  1309. these things

  1310. and the

  1311. God of

  1312. peace

  1313. will be

  1314. with you

  1315. the promise

  1316. is of an

  1317. ever

  1318. deepening

  1319. fellowship

  1320. and communion

  1321. with God

  1322. the God

  1323. of peace

  1324. you see

  1325. standing

  1326. fast

  1327. isn't just

  1328. about making

  1329. peace between

  1330. us

  1331. as verses

  1332. two and

  1333. three were

  1334. about

  1335. standing

  1336. fast

  1337. isn't just

  1338. about experiencing

  1339. peace within

  1340. us

  1341. as verses

  1342. four through

  1343. seven were

  1344. about

  1345. standing

  1346. fast

  1347. is ultimately

  1348. about

  1349. communing

  1350. with the

  1351. one who

  1352. is peace

  1353. himself

  1354. and maybe

  1355. others will

  1356. look at us

  1357. and say

  1358. I think

  1359. God is

  1360. with them

  1361. so brothers

  1362. and sisters

  1363. stand

  1364. firm

  1365. in the

  1366. Lord

  1367. beloved

  1368. don't let

  1369. the world

  1370. squeeze you

  1371. into its

  1372. mold

  1373. live in

  1374. the freedom

  1375. and peace

  1376. that come

  1377. from knowing

  1378. and loving

  1379. the God

  1380. of peace

  1381. practice

  1382. these things

  1383. and the God

  1384. of peace

  1385. will be with

  1386. you

  1387. let's pray

  1388. our father

  1389. we acknowledge

  1390. that we

  1391. certainly need

  1392. your help

  1393. and yet

  1394. we give

  1395. you

  1396. so much

  1397. thanks

  1398. that where

  1399. we need

  1400. your help

  1401. you gladly

  1402. provide it

  1403. what a

  1404. gracious

  1405. and good

  1406. God

  1407. you are

  1408. we pray

  1409. that you

  1410. would

  1411. pour your

  1412. spirit

  1413. out afresh

  1414. upon us

  1415. and help

  1416. us to

  1417. live into

  1418. these things

  1419. Lord help

  1420. them not

  1421. just to be

  1422. ideas

  1423. we think

  1424. about

  1425. but practices

  1426. we live

  1427. for your

  1428. glory

  1429. amen

  1430. are

  1431. refuge

  1432. in

  1433. for your
