  1. Why don't I open us up in prayer first?

  2. Father God, I thank you for this day.

  3. I thank you for this opportunity for us to think about you and to learn about you, Lord.

  4. I ask that you give me clarity of mind and clear speech,

  5. and that this would be helpful and edifying to your body.

  6. We love you, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.

  7. Okay, so let me start with a lot of preamble.

  8. So the preamble is, this is like a really huge subject.

  9. And when I was asked to give a class on it, initially I was like, okay, I'll do one tight class about it.

  10. And then I realized that's not going to work. I had to do more than one.

  11. And then the longer I was reading and looking, there's just no way for me to put everything that I would like to say into a class,

  12. unless we want to go all year.

  13. And so I had to focus on one specific thing.

  14. So I'll talk about what the goal of this class is in a second.

  15. But first, I'm Luke Batty.

  16. I'm one of the deacons here at church.

  17. I'm also what would be called a natural theologian back in the day.

  18. And we'll get into that.

  19. But this is a little controversial.

  20. I don't know if you guys have noticed, but there is sort of a discussion going on in Christian circles.

  21. And it has been for a long time.

  22. And so what I hope to do in talking about creationism, intelligent design, theistic evolution, all these different topics,

  23. is to provide a framework for unity in the body.

  24. I feel like a lot of times among Christians,

  25. when we want to be having useful, helpful discussions about these topics,

  26. you know, sort of like Bilbo hanging out and smoking a pipe and talking to Gandalf.

  27. We want to be doing that.

  28. But a lot of times it's more like that, right?

  29. We're kind of yelling at each other and we're just not connecting.

  30. And so that's what I want to do.

  31. My goal here was to provide a couple tools to help us to understand each other,

  32. all the different positions that are there,

  33. and more generally talk about two sort of big picture philosophical positions

  34. that carry a lot of weight in this discussion.

  35. So with that, let me go into what we're doing today, which is introduction.

  36. I know everybody loves introductory classes,

  37. but I felt like there really wasn't any way for me to avoid it

  38. because to understand a lot of the tension and a lot of the rancor in the debate,

  39. we have to really understand how we got where we are right now.

  40. So I wanted to give sort of a historical overview of the debate in Christianity,

  41. in science, and how science and faith sort of have been together and not together.

  42. And then we can go into this specific part of that debate,

  43. which is intelligent design and theistic evolution.

  44. So I'm going to apologize ahead of time for this PowerPoint.

  45. It is probably the most boring PowerPoint I've ever made.

  46. But I promise next week it'll probably be as bad.

  47. So let's be honest.

  48. Okay.

  49. So let's start with the rise of the scientific method.

  50. Now, believe it or not, the scientific method didn't actually pop out of the Enlightenment

  51. after those horrible dark ages.

  52. But in fact, actually, the beginnings of the scientific method

  53. were actually developed in medieval Christian universities.

  54. And the way this developed is actually very interesting

  55. because if you go back to antiquity, when thinking about the natural world,

  56. especially if we're talking about ancient Greeks, for instance,

  57. they would actually do propositional thinking,

  58. which meant they would think about first principles

  59. and then using reason apply those first principles to nature

  60. and say this must be what's going on in nature.

  61. Because their view of God and creator, the logos,

  62. is reason sort of imprinted on nature.

  63. And so you didn't have to go out and look at nature and, you know, observe.

  64. You just had to think about it and be like, okay, that's what's going on.

  65. And you didn't have to worry about it.

  66. But with the rise of Christianity, we had the rise of a free creator,

  67. a creator that was personal and that now he had a will.

  68. And because God had will, that meant he could have done otherwise.

  69. He chose to create things a specific way.

  70. And so the only way that we can know what's going on in nature

  71. is to actually observe it, to go and look at it and say,

  72. this is what must be going on.

  73. So empiricism, the view that we can look at nature

  74. and over testing and observation,

  75. we can learn something about the way that it works,

  76. develops from Christian theology of the nature of God as a free person.

  77. And the other component of this sort of development

  78. is that God is rational and we are made in his image,

  79. which means that we can actually,

  80. we have reason to believe that we can go into nature

  81. and determine what's going on, that we can understand it.

  82. I mean, it seems obvious to us now,

  83. but before Christianity, there was no feeling

  84. that nature could be intelligible to human beings, right?

  85. So with these two pillars,

  86. we have the will of God and we have intelligibility,

  87. we can now, as some of the early natural theologians,

  88. which was what they called scientists back in the day.

  89. So I'm a scientist, if that wasn't clear from earlier on.

  90. These natural theologians sought to think God's thoughts after him

  91. and by learning about how God created the world

  92. to then glorify him and praise him for his amazing works,

  93. which is the impetus for a lot of the early scientific breakthroughs.

  94. But over time, this was formalized and systematized,

  95. institutionalized throughout the 17th and 19th century.

  96. Earlier, you know, as the effort of science sort of progressed,

  97. we go from sort of medieval university professors

  98. sort of thinking about it.

  99. It wasn't a huge, it wasn't like it exploded, right?

  100. But it started there.

  101. And over time, you had a growth of sort of independent scientists

  102. sort of doing their own thing, like,

  103. oh, hey, I was, you know, out in my mansion

  104. and I was looking in the backyard and I was like,

  105. hey, what about these peas, you know?

  106. So that moved on.

  107. And then over time, it became,

  108. there started to become philosophy of science

  109. where people were thinking about how we do science,

  110. what's best practices, what is the scientific method,

  111. how can we best challenge hypotheses

  112. and bring up evidence, et cetera.

  113. And in the second half of the 19th century,

  114. science over time gets continuously narrowed

  115. and narrowed and narrowed down in its scope.

  116. So in, oh, hold on, I skipped a thing.

  117. But at the end of the 19th century,

  118. that's when we have the narrowing of science

  119. into sort of the epistemological method

  120. outside of the supernatural, right?

  121. So science now becomes this method

  122. to determine things outside of theology and philosophy.

  123. This is where we go out and we see what's in nature

  124. and we don't, we try not to bring any philosophy

  125. or theology into it.

  126. And this is actually when this sort of assumption,

  127. and it's informal,

  128. it's not actually ever been formally inserted

  129. into the scientific method,

  130. but methodological naturalism is now assumed, right?

  131. And what methodological naturalism is,

  132. is the assumption that everything that we look at in nature

  133. has a natural explanation, right?

  134. So we do not appeal to agents.

  135. We do not appeal to God.

  136. We just say, this must have happened because of this.

  137. And it's an endless sort of chain of causation.

  138. And this is methodological naturalism.

  139. Now, at the same time, throughout this period,

  140. that science is becoming institutionalized,

  141. we also have the rise of a variety of new sort of disciplines

  142. and new discoveries from these disciplines.

  143. So we have advances in geology, paleontology, biology.

  144. And the interesting thing about these advances is that

  145. while starting from a Christian foundation

  146. of understanding how we can understand nature,

  147. we started to discover things about nature

  148. that didn't really gel easily

  149. with the contemporary Christian worldview.

  150. So, for instance, geology was moving away

  151. from what's called catastrophism

  152. and towards uniformitarianism.

  153. Basically, the idea that most of the geological formations

  154. that we see today

  155. are the result of the same sort of forces

  156. that we see every day on the street,

  157. but over long periods of time.

  158. So instead of there being catastrophic events

  159. that produce these geological formations,

  160. it's actually little tiny things

  161. over a long period of time.

  162. And so this implicated that the Earth

  163. seemed to be very old.

  164. Also, paleontology started to unearth

  165. some pretty crazy things, you know?

  166. Dinosaurs were showing up, you know?

  167. Like, what are these?

  168. We don't have these anymore.

  169. You know, all these strange

  170. and wonderful different created...

  171. Well, I guess I'm inserting

  172. my own worldview there, right?

  173. But all these interesting new body plans

  174. and biological systems

  175. and new sort of creatures

  176. we had never seen before

  177. are being discovered,

  178. their bones are being discovered

  179. out of the Earth.

  180. And so this sort of shakes the idea

  181. that the biological makeup of the Earth

  182. right now is permanent.

  183. Like, this is how it's always been.

  184. Apparently, this isn't always how it's been.

  185. There were things around

  186. that aren't around anymore.

  187. And then finally, most famously,

  188. Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace

  189. were discovering mechanisms of adaptation

  190. and natural selection,

  191. which, in biology,

  192. which now posited the possibility

  193. that there were a continuum of animal forms

  194. just slowly morphing one into the other.

  195. And so, as you can see,

  196. these new discoveries are sort of...

  197. They're poking.

  198. They're not very comfortable

  199. with the traditional Christian theistic worldview.

  200. Suddenly, things are starting

  201. to look a little dissonant.

  202. And this is actually when we get

  203. the appearance of a new worldview.

  204. And this new worldview is scientific materialism.

  205. So, cumulatively,

  206. all these different research areas

  207. started to allow the creation

  208. of a secular worldview.

  209. Right?

  210. So now we have a universe that is...

  211. an Earth that is very old.

  212. We have creatures that have been dying.

  213. We have this new theory

  214. that allows us to explain

  215. how one animal can get into another animal

  216. in principle.

  217. And so this becomes scientific materialism.

  218. Now, what scientific materialism is

  219. is basically it marries

  220. two different philosophical positions.

  221. The first one is familiar to all of us,

  222. which is materialism.

  223. What materialism says is that

  224. the world, the physical world,

  225. is all that there is.

  226. Right?

  227. There is nothing but atoms

  228. and other kinds of atoms.

  229. And there's just a whole bunch

  230. of different atoms

  231. and different configurations.

  232. And that's what we call

  233. the physical world.

  234. And that's all there is.

  235. Now, this was actually married

  236. to another view called scientism.

  237. And so what scientism is

  238. is that science alone...

  239. Now, this is the hard version.

  240. There actually is a soft version,

  241. but I won't get into that

  242. unless somebody wants

  243. to ask a question about that,

  244. which, by the way,

  245. if you have any questions at all

  246. about anything,

  247. even in the middle of the class,

  248. please raise your hand.

  249. I wanted this to be clear.

  250. But scientism posits

  251. that the scientific method alone,

  252. especially in the hard sciences,

  253. is capable of explaining truth.

  254. The only way to get at truth,

  255. the only way to get

  256. at verifiable information,

  257. knowledge,

  258. is through the scientific method.

  259. Now, you can see how these both

  260. sort of reinforce each other.

  261. Right?

  262. Science, as I had said before,

  263. over the course of this period,

  264. had continuously narrowed

  265. and narrowed and narrowed

  266. into the point where we have

  267. this assumption

  268. of methodological naturalism,

  269. which says,

  270. we're not going to appeal

  271. to outside agents.

  272. We're not going to appeal

  273. to God for anything.

  274. We're going to assume,

  275. for the sake of argument,

  276. let's say,

  277. in the case of Francis Bacon,

  278. he posited methodological naturalism

  279. as a thought exercise.

  280. Right?

  281. I'm going to assume

  282. that there's nothing supernatural

  283. going on here.

  284. There's no design going on here.

  285. I'm just going to look at,

  286. well, I guess he wouldn't say

  287. there's no design,

  288. but I'm going to assume

  289. that a natural process

  290. is going on.

  291. So that,

  292. coupled with this new view

  293. that the material world

  294. is all there is,

  295. you can see that

  296. science is our method

  297. of getting verifiable information

  298. from the natural world.

  299. and if the natural world

  300. is the only thing

  301. that exists,

  302. then science

  303. is the only thing

  304. that can give us

  305. any real information about it.

  306. So this is how

  307. we get to the point

  308. where there is

  309. an open hostility

  310. between sort of

  311. institutionalized science

  312. and theistic worldview.

  313. Right?

  314. So we have these early

  315. sort of discoveries

  316. which are uncomfortable

  317. with the contemporary

  318. theistic worldview,

  319. but not insurmountable.

  320. But this new secular

  321. comprehensive worldview

  322. is very much

  323. uncompatible

  324. with Christianity.

  325. And this is how

  326. the scientific establishment,

  327. you might say,

  328. you know,

  329. becomes hostile

  330. to religious belief

  331. in general.

  332. And this institutionalization

  333. has been

  334. one of the major drivers

  335. of most of the philosophical

  336. and metaphysical trends

  337. that we see

  338. in our culture.

  339. You know,

  340. modernism,

  341. postmodernism,

  342. they're all

  343. as a baseline

  344. assuming scientific materialism

  345. in many ways.

  346. and they rely

  347. on the authority

  348. and the track record

  349. of scientific discoveries

  350. to sort of

  351. prop up

  352. that philosophical worldview.

  353. And that's one of the things

  354. that we're going to talk about

  355. in this class

  356. is that a lot

  357. of the perceived hostility

  358. between science

  359. and specifically

  360. the Christian worldview

  361. is actually

  362. a philosophical disagreement.

  363. Where we,

  364. as Christians,

  365. reject scientific

  366. materialism,

  367. obviously,

  368. right?

  369. Because there's

  370. at least one thing

  371. that is not material

  372. and that's God,

  373. right?

  374. And so

  375. we have to reject that

  376. and because

  377. this has sort of been

  378. this philosophy

  379. has sort of been

  380. interwoven

  381. with the way

  382. that we do science

  383. and the assumptions

  384. that we make,

  385. this creates

  386. a lot of tension

  387. in our world.

  388. So

  389. this leads us

  390. to the Christian

  391. bind.

  392. So if you're thinking

  393. about the

  394. development

  395. of the scientific method

  396. over time,

  397. then we're going

  398. to be looking

  399. at the fact

  400. that Christianity

  401. at a base level

  402. has the assumptions

  403. that brought science

  404. into the fore,

  405. right?

  406. we started off

  407. talking about

  408. how the theology

  409. of God

  410. as a independent

  411. person

  412. with a free will

  413. and our status

  414. as image bearers

  415. is what

  416. cumulatively

  417. sets up

  418. the system

  419. for science.

  420. but

  421. over time

  422. this has become

  423. more difficult

  424. and so the

  425. Christian bind

  426. is that we

  427. acknowledge

  428. wholeheartedly

  429. that men

  430. can understand

  431. the physical world

  432. and learn

  433. something true

  434. about God

  435. and nature.

  436. We're made

  437. in the image

  438. of God

  439. and this is

  440. what allows

  441. us

  442. to confidently

  443. come

  444. to nature

  445. and say

  446. we can learn

  447. something.

  448. But secondly

  449. the world

  450. view of

  451. scientific

  452. materialism

  453. which has

  454. been supported

  455. by the

  456. findings of

  457. this method

  458. are clearly

  459. contrary to

  460. scripture.

  461. Scientific

  462. materialism

  463. doesn't mesh

  464. with scripture

  465. and so

  466. Christians

  467. are seemingly

  468. stuck

  469. between

  470. what I

  471. call

  472. truth

  473. lowercase

  474. t

  475. truth

  476. being

  477. what we

  478. can know

  479. about

  480. general

  481. revelation

  482. revelation

  483. what we

  484. can learn

  485. about

  486. the world

  487. nature

  488. you know

  489. in the

  490. bible

  491. Paul

  492. tells us

  493. that

  494. God

  495. is clearly

  496. seen

  497. in the

  498. works

  499. of

  500. nature

  501. so

  502. this

  503. is

  504. the

  505. basis

  506. of

  507. what

  508. we

  509. would

  510. call

  511. general

  512. revelation

  513. but

  514. we

  515. also

  516. have

  517. a

  518. capital

  519. T

  520. truth

  521. right

  522. which

  523. is

  524. scripture

  525. God's

  526. actual

  527. revelation

  528. to us

  529. specially

  530. and this

  531. special

  532. revelation

  533. has its

  534. own

  535. truth

  536. claims

  537. right

  538. and so

  539. when

  540. scientific

  541. materialism

  542. based on

  543. lowercase

  544. t

  545. truth

  546. and

  547. Christianity

  548. based on

  549. uppercase

  550. t

  551. truth

  552. come into

  553. conflict

  554. Christianity

  555. Christians

  556. feel like

  557. right

  558. because we

  559. want to

  560. affirm

  561. that we

  562. can learn

  563. something

  564. from nature

  565. but we

  566. also want

  567. to

  568. affirm

  569. the truth

  570. of

  571. scripture

  572. and so

  573. historically

  574. this

  575. actually

  576. developed

  577. this

  578. bind

  579. sort

  580. of

  581. developed

  582. sort

  583. of a

  584. split

  585. in

  586. at least

  587. in

  588. American

  589. Christianity

  590. between

  591. what we

  592. would call

  593. the

  594. fundamentalist

  595. movement

  596. these

  597. were

  598. Christians

  599. that

  600. above

  601. all

  602. wanted

  603. to

  604. protect

  605. the

  606. truth

  607. of

  608. special

  609. revelation

  610. and as

  611. a result

  612. they stayed

  613. what we

  614. would call

  615. theologically

  616. orthodox

  617. but they

  618. actually

  619. became

  620. intellectually

  621. sort of

  622. isolationist

  623. they

  624. stayed

  625. true to

  626. scripture

  627. but they

  628. no longer

  629. wanted

  630. to

  631. work with

  632. or

  633. interact

  634. with

  635. that's the word

  636. I'm looking for

  637. they no longer

  638. wanted to

  639. interact with

  640. the scientific

  641. establishment

  642. or many

  643. other forms

  644. of intellectual

  645. pursuit

  646. because they

  647. thought that it

  648. was all

  649. sort of

  650. corrupted

  651. but on the

  652. other side

  653. we had

  654. a different

  655. group of

  656. Christians

  657. who tended

  658. to side

  659. more with

  660. general revelation

  661. than with

  662. special revelation

  663. and these

  664. became what we

  665. would call

  666. the liberal

  667. mainline

  668. denominations

  669. that we have

  670. today

  671. and they

  672. became

  673. less and

  674. less

  675. orthodox

  676. over time

  677. due to

  678. a greater

  679. and greater

  680. desire

  681. to fit

  682. sort of

  683. this

  684. new

  685. materialist

  686. intellectual

  687. milieu

  688. into

  689. Christianity

  690. to the point

  691. where a lot

  692. of

  693. times

  694. they will

  695. deny

  696. the deity

  697. or even

  698. existence

  699. of Christ

  700. they will

  701. deny the

  702. resurrection

  703. often

  704. they will

  705. reinterpret

  706. the gospel

  707. and maybe

  708. even reject

  709. theism

  710. itself

  711. so

  712. I guess

  713. what I'm

  714. trying to

  715. explain to

  716. us as we

  717. approach this

  718. topic is

  719. because a

  720. lot of

  721. the emotion

  722. right

  723. a lot of

  724. the anger

  725. in this

  726. topic is

  727. because we

  728. have groups

  729. of Christians

  730. who guard

  731. jealously

  732. special revelation

  733. right

  734. because historically

  735. we've had

  736. situations

  737. in which

  738. Christians

  739. have

  740. slowly

  741. disregarded

  742. the authority

  743. of special

  744. revelation

  745. and fallen

  746. away

  747. right

  748. but then

  749. at the other

  750. end of the

  751. spectrum

  752. we have

  753. Christians

  754. saying

  755. but

  756. we have

  757. every reason

  758. biblically

  759. to believe

  760. that we

  761. as image

  762. bearers

  763. have a

  764. responsibility

  765. and an

  766. ability

  767. to know

  768. about the

  769. natural

  770. world

  771. and so

  772. there is

  773. this

  774. tension

  775. right

  776. and a lot

  777. of it

  778. has to do

  779. with our

  780. historical

  781. situation

  782. as we

  783. are right

  784. now

  785. evangelicals

  786. which

  787. broadly

  788. we are

  789. right

  790. evangelicals

  791. didn't really

  792. ever fit

  793. neatly

  794. in the

  795. fundamentalist

  796. category

  797. or

  798. the

  799. mainline

  800. category

  801. so

  802. in a

  803. certain

  804. sense

  805. we are

  806. like

  807. hey

  808. man

  809. let's

  810. all

  811. be

  812. together

  813. but

  814. at the

  815. same

  816. time

  817. we can't

  818. help

  819. but be

  820. influenced

  821. by the

  822. major

  823. big

  824. streams

  825. of

  826. Christianity

  827. going

  828. through

  829. our

  830. culture

  831. and so

  832. if this

  833. is the

  834. origin

  835. of

  836. this

  837. view

  838. of the

  839. scientific

  840. versus

  841. science

  842. versus

  843. faith

  844. dichotomy

  845. this is

  846. something

  847. that we

  848. need to

  849. look at

  850. how

  851. do we

  852. balance

  853. general

  854. revelation

  855. and special

  856. revelation

  857. how do

  858. different

  859. people

  860. different

  861. Christians

  862. come to

  863. different

  864. conclusions

  865. about how

  866. we do

  867. that

  868. and that

  869. is going

  870. to be

  871. the

  872. topic

  873. of our

  874. next

  875. class

  876. is

  877. the

  878. different

  879. ways

  880. of

  881. balancing

  882. general

  883. and special

  884. revelation

  885. and the

  886. different

  887. ways

  888. in which

  889. this

  890. influences

  891. how we

  892. understand

  893. scripture

  894. and the

  895. natural

  896. world

  897. okay

  898. this is

  899. the most

  900. boring slide

  901. but also

  902. the rest

  903. are

  904. equally

  905. boring

  906. so

  907. let's

  908. move on

  909. to

  910. what

  911. we're

  912. going to

  913. be

  914. talking

  915. about

  916. more

  917. specifically

  918. in this

  919. wider

  920. science

  921. versus

  922. faith

  923. debate

  924. which is

  925. intelligent

  926. design

  927. and

  928. theistic

  929. evolution

  930. so

  931. today

  932. I'm not

  933. going to

  934. go into

  935. a whole

  936. bunch of

  937. details

  938. about

  939. what

  940. intelligent

  941. design

  942. what are

  943. the arguments

  944. what are the

  945. arguments

  946. against

  947. that's

  948. going to

  949. be

  950. our

  951. third

  952. class

  953. where

  954. we're

  955. going to

  956. talk

  957. about

  958. a

  959. different

  960. sort

  961. of

  962. balance

  963. but

  964. I want

  965. to

  966. start

  967. off

  968. with

  969. a

  970. definition

  971. right

  972. I want

  973. us

  974. to

  975. all

  976. be

  977. on

  978. the

  979. same

  980. page

  981. about

  982. what

  983. it

  984. is

  985. that

  986. we're

  987. talking

  988. about

  989. so

  990. we

  991. don't

  992. get

  993. confused

  994. so

  995. what

  996. is

  997. the

  998. intelligent

  999. design

  1000. movement

  1001. well

  1002. if we

  1003. take them

  1004. at their

  1005. own

  1006. word

  1007. which I

  1008. think

  1009. is the

  1010. intellectually

  1011. honest

  1012. thing

  1013. to do

  1014. intelligent

  1015. design

  1016. is

  1017. primarily

  1018. a

  1019. scientific

  1020. movement

  1021. or

  1022. ID

  1023. I'm

  1024. going to

  1025. call

  1026. them

  1027. ID

  1028. because

  1029. that's

  1030. how

  1031. they

  1032. go

  1033. they

  1034. have

  1035. a

  1036. variety

  1037. of

  1038. minor

  1039. sort

  1040. of

  1041. philosophical

  1042. metaphysical

  1043. arguments

  1044. associated

  1045. but

  1046. what

  1047. ID

  1048. really

  1049. seeks

  1050. to

  1051. argue

  1052. is

  1053. that

  1054. many

  1055. elements

  1056. of

  1057. nature

  1058. are

  1059. best

  1060. explained

  1061. through

  1062. the

  1063. activity

  1064. of an

  1065. intelligent

  1066. agent

  1067. they

  1068. try to

  1069. argue

  1070. that

  1071. design

  1072. is

  1073. scientifically

  1074. detectable

  1075. specifically

  1076. in the

  1077. biological

  1078. realm

  1079. and so

  1080. the

  1081. challenge

  1082. to

  1083. intelligent

  1084. design

  1085. often

  1086. is

  1087. actually

  1088. that

  1089. they

  1090. are

  1091. pseudoscientific

  1092. right

  1093. and

  1094. pseudoscientific

  1095. is a

  1096. way

  1097. of

  1098. arguing

  1099. that

  1100. their

  1101. methodology

  1102. methodology

  1103. is not

  1104. in line

  1105. with the

  1106. scientific

  1107. method

  1108. okay

  1109. let me

  1110. let me go

  1111. a little

  1112. bit

  1113. into that

  1114. so we

  1115. can

  1116. understand

  1117. that

  1118. criticism

  1119. before we

  1120. move on

  1121. to

  1122. criticism

  1123. of their

  1124. arguments

  1125. on the

  1126. merits

  1127. of their

  1128. arguments

  1129. this is

  1130. the

  1131. challenge

  1132. of

  1133. pseudoscience

  1134. is sort

  1135. of a

  1136. dismissal

  1137. and

  1138. basically

  1139. their

  1140. critics

  1141. argue

  1142. that

  1143. you

  1144. can't

  1145. appeal

  1146. to

  1147. an

  1148. agent

  1149. when

  1150. doing

  1151. science

  1152. that

  1153. this

  1154. now

  1155. puts you

  1156. outside

  1157. of the

  1158. scientific

  1159. method

  1160. but as

  1161. we talked

  1162. about

  1163. earlier

  1164. that doesn't

  1165. necessarily

  1166. need to

  1167. be the

  1168. case

  1169. right

  1170. you'll

  1171. find

  1172. that

  1173. most

  1174. of the

  1175. time

  1176. when

  1177. scientists

  1178. are

  1179. dismissing

  1180. the

  1181. intelligent

  1182. design

  1183. movement

  1184. on this

  1185. basis

  1186. they're

  1187. actually

  1188. arguing

  1189. implicitly

  1190. for

  1191. methodological

  1192. naturalism

  1193. right

  1194. now

  1195. interestingly

  1196. if you

  1197. actually

  1198. look

  1199. at the

  1200. various

  1201. explanations

  1202. and

  1203. demarcations

  1204. of what

  1205. the scientific

  1206. method is

  1207. you won't

  1208. actually find

  1209. methodological

  1210. naturalism

  1211. it is not

  1212. a

  1213. expressed

  1214. tenet

  1215. of the

  1216. scientific

  1217. method

  1218. right

  1219. so a lot

  1220. of times

  1221. because

  1222. the ID

  1223. crowd

  1224. rejects

  1225. methodological

  1226. naturalism

  1227. right

  1228. because their

  1229. argument is

  1230. that we

  1231. can actually

  1232. see

  1233. the

  1234. activity

  1235. of God

  1236. in

  1237. nature

  1238. now of

  1239. course

  1240. they don't

  1241. make

  1242. well I'll

  1243. explain that

  1244. what they

  1245. aren't

  1246. but

  1247. this

  1248. sort of

  1249. tension

  1250. between

  1251. methodological

  1252. naturalism

  1253. and the

  1254. ID

  1255. crowd

  1256. is really

  1257. what I

  1258. think is

  1259. at the

  1260. root of

  1261. this

  1262. challenge

  1263. of

  1264. pseudoscience

  1265. now

  1266. the

  1267. problem

  1268. is

  1269. because

  1270. methodological

  1271. naturalism

  1272. isn't a

  1273. core

  1274. tenet of

  1275. the

  1276. scientific

  1277. method

  1278. they

  1279. actually

  1280. can't

  1281. argue

  1282. for it

  1283. so

  1284. often

  1285. times

  1286. they

  1287. will

  1288. argue

  1289. that

  1290. the

  1291. ID

  1292. community

  1293. doesn't

  1294. present

  1295. falsifiable

  1296. claims

  1297. or that

  1298. it's an

  1299. argument from

  1300. ignorance

  1301. or doesn't

  1302. make

  1303. predictions

  1304. these are

  1305. all

  1306. different

  1307. tenets of

  1308. the

  1309. scientific

  1310. method

  1311. but

  1312. I

  1313. don't

  1314. think

  1315. most of

  1316. those

  1317. challenges

  1318. actually

  1319. pass

  1320. muster

  1321. I think

  1322. most of

  1323. the time

  1324. they are

  1325. confronted

  1326. critics of

  1327. intelligent

  1328. design

  1329. are confronted

  1330. with the

  1331. fact that

  1332. they are

  1333. expressing

  1334. rejecting

  1335. methodological

  1336. naturalism

  1337. and being

  1338. brought to

  1339. the fore

  1340. and they

  1341. are like

  1342. oh man

  1343. I can't

  1344. actually

  1345. argue

  1346. the problem

  1347. is

  1348. with

  1349. scientific

  1350. materialism

  1351. is that

  1352. scientism

  1353. one of

  1354. those

  1355. pillars

  1356. that

  1357. the hard

  1358. sciences

  1359. are the

  1360. only way

  1361. to

  1362. get

  1363. true

  1364. knowledge

  1365. is

  1366. not

  1367. is a

  1368. self-refuting

  1369. statement

  1370. right

  1371. so

  1372. that

  1373. the

  1374. sentence

  1375. science

  1376. is the

  1377. only way

  1378. to get

  1379. true

  1380. knowledge

  1381. is not

  1382. testable

  1383. by

  1384. science

  1385. you see

  1386. the

  1387. problem

  1388. and so

  1389. because

  1390. that

  1391. sentence

  1392. is not

  1393. testable

  1394. by

  1395. science

  1396. it

  1397. cannot

  1398. be

  1399. true

  1400. by

  1401. its

  1402. own

  1403. argument

  1404. right

  1405. and so

  1406. a lot

  1407. of times

  1408. when

  1409. the

  1410. ID

  1411. crowd

  1412. brings

  1413. up

  1414. their

  1415. arguments

  1416. methodological

  1417. naturalism

  1418. starts to

  1419. come to

  1420. the fore

  1421. and then

  1422. scientists

  1423. are like

  1424. well I

  1425. can't

  1426. argue

  1427. for

  1428. methodological

  1429. naturalism

  1430. because

  1431. that's

  1432. a

  1433. philosophical

  1434. argument

  1435. and

  1436. based on

  1437. scientific

  1438. materialism

  1439. I can't

  1440. argue

  1441. for that

  1442. so

  1443. they're

  1444. putting

  1445. a

  1446. bind

  1447. I

  1448. think

  1449. it's

  1450. an

  1451. uncomfortable

  1452. position

  1453. and I

  1454. don't

  1455. mean

  1456. to

  1457. dismiss

  1458. the

  1459. critics

  1460. of

  1461. intelligent

  1462. design

  1463. because

  1464. there

  1465. are

  1466. legitimate

  1467. criticisms

  1468. of

  1469. the

  1470. different

  1471. claims

  1472. on

  1473. scientific

  1474. grounds

  1475. on

  1476. philosophical

  1477. grounds

  1478. I

  1479. think

  1480. what I

  1481. want

  1482. to

  1483. say

  1484. is

  1485. I'm

  1486. not

  1487. going

  1488. to

  1489. really

  1490. focus

  1491. primarily

  1492. in

  1493. this

  1494. class

  1495. on

  1496. the

  1497. challenge

  1498. that

  1499. it's

  1500. pseudoscientific

  1501. I

  1502. think

  1503. it's

  1504. not

  1505. really

  1506. worth

  1507. our

  1508. time

  1509. and

  1510. I

  1511. think

  1512. it's

  1513. not

  1514. worth

  1515. our

  1516. time

  1517. because

  1518. it

  1519. doesn't

  1520. really

  1521. work

  1522. so

  1523. that

  1524. is

  1525. what

  1526. intelligent

  1527. design

  1528. is

  1529. what

  1530. isn't

  1531. it

  1532. okay

  1533. it

  1534. is

  1535. not

  1536. a

  1537. religious

  1538. movement

  1539. so

  1540. ID

  1541. proponents

  1542. don't

  1543. make

  1544. arguments

  1545. from

  1546. scripture

  1547. they

  1548. don't

  1549. they're

  1550. not

  1551. expressly

  1552. Christian

  1553. they're

  1554. not

  1555. even

  1556. all

  1557. theists

  1558. to be

  1559. honest

  1560. with

  1561. you

  1562. there

  1563. are

  1564. agnostics

  1565. part of

  1566. the

  1567. ID

  1568. crowd

  1569. there

  1570. are

  1571. Muslims

  1572. there

  1573. are

  1574. what's

  1575. up

  1576. I'm

  1577. sorry

  1578. say

  1579. yeah

  1580. yeah

  1581. I mean

  1582. there's

  1583. there's

  1584. just a

  1585. whole

  1586. bunch

  1587. there's

  1588. like

  1589. neoplatonists

  1590. as part

  1591. of it

  1592. you know

  1593. so

  1594. there's

  1595. like

  1596. a

  1597. whole

  1598. it's

  1599. a

  1600. hodgepodge

  1601. so

  1602. I

  1603. think

  1604. to

  1605. argue

  1606. that

  1607. it

  1608. is

  1609. sort

  1610. of

  1611. a

  1612. creationist

  1613. group

  1614. is

  1615. not

  1616. necessarily

  1617. true

  1618. although

  1619. the

  1620. implications

  1621. of

  1622. intelligent

  1623. design

  1624. really

  1625. point

  1626. to

  1627. the

  1628. fact

  1629. that

  1630. there

  1631. is

  1632. some

  1633. sort

  1634. of

  1635. intelligent

  1636. agent

  1637. so

  1638. you know

  1639. they would

  1640. argue

  1641. that

  1642. when they're

  1643. given the

  1644. charge of

  1645. creationism

  1646. that they

  1647. would say

  1648. well

  1649. it doesn't

  1650. have to

  1651. be

  1652. God

  1653. it could

  1654. be

  1655. you know

  1656. like a

  1657. super

  1658. advanced

  1659. alien

  1660. right

  1661. that's

  1662. doing

  1663. it

  1664. but

  1665. really

  1666. when

  1667. we're

  1668. I mean

  1669. when we're

  1670. talking

  1671. about

  1672. the kinds

  1673. of

  1674. things

  1675. that

  1676. the

  1677. ID

  1678. movement

  1679. is saying

  1680. has been

  1681. done

  1682. in the

  1683. history

  1684. of

  1685. biology

  1686. it

  1687. looks

  1688. a lot

  1689. like

  1690. God

  1691. so

  1692. I

  1693. understand

  1694. the

  1695. sentiment

  1696. but we

  1697. want to

  1698. understand

  1699. what

  1700. the

  1701. movement

  1702. is

  1703. on

  1704. its

  1705. own

  1706. grounds

  1707. right

  1708. they

  1709. would

  1710. never

  1711. argue

  1712. from

  1713. scripture

  1714. and

  1715. they

  1716. would

  1717. never

  1718. argue

  1719. from

  1720. theology

  1721. either

  1722. now

  1723. individual

  1724. ID

  1725. proponents

  1726. will say

  1727. yes

  1728. but I

  1729. also am

  1730. a

  1731. Christian

  1732. and so

  1733. to

  1734. Christians

  1735. they will

  1736. talk about

  1737. theology

  1738. and stuff

  1739. but not

  1740. as a

  1741. major part

  1742. of their

  1743. scientific

  1744. work

  1745. so they

  1746. do

  1747. take great

  1748. pains

  1749. to separate

  1750. theological

  1751. arguments

  1752. from their

  1753. scientific

  1754. case

  1755. they don't

  1756. make

  1757. interpretations

  1758. of

  1759. Genesis

  1760. although

  1761. if you

  1762. were to

  1763. take a

  1764. poll

  1765. you would

  1766. find

  1767. that

  1768. most

  1769. Christians

  1770. who are

  1771. in the

  1772. ID

  1773. movement

  1774. would be

  1775. called

  1776. old earth

  1777. creationists

  1778. is the

  1779. general

  1780. field

  1781. and they're

  1782. not dedicated

  1783. to any

  1784. specific

  1785. designer

  1786. it could

  1787. be

  1788. anything

  1789. that has

  1790. the

  1791. power

  1792. and capacity

  1793. to design

  1794. which

  1795. in our

  1796. situation

  1797. let's

  1798. call this

  1799. guy

  1800. God

  1801. so

  1802. that's

  1803. intelligent

  1804. design

  1805. again

  1806. I'm

  1807. happy to

  1808. take any

  1809. questions

  1810. after

  1811. the lesson

  1812. or during

  1813. the lesson

  1814. but my

  1815. goal here

  1816. in this

  1817. class

  1818. is to

  1819. try to

  1820. present

  1821. what the

  1822. arguments

  1823. is that

  1824. each

  1825. side is

  1826. actually

  1827. presenting

  1828. for

  1829. themselves

  1830. and not

  1831. caricature

  1832. them

  1833. so that

  1834. is what

  1835. we're doing

  1836. today

  1837. is trying

  1838. not to

  1839. caricature

  1840. each

  1841. side

  1842. so

  1843. what is

  1844. theistic

  1845. evolution

  1846. so theistic

  1847. evolution

  1848. as you

  1849. might

  1850. imagine

  1851. has something

  1852. to do

  1853. with evolution

  1854. and something

  1855. to do

  1856. with God

  1857. as well

  1858. so what

  1859. theistic

  1860. evolution

  1861. is

  1862. it is

  1863. a movement

  1864. or actually

  1865. I shouldn't

  1866. say movement

  1867. it is a

  1868. theological

  1869. slash

  1870. philosophical

  1871. position

  1872. so

  1873. they don't

  1874. really

  1875. make

  1876. specific

  1877. scientific

  1878. claims

  1879. what they

  1880. do

  1881. is they

  1882. argue

  1883. that

  1884. the

  1885. Darwinian

  1886. macro

  1887. evolution

  1888. is

  1889. compatible

  1890. with

  1891. theistic

  1892. belief

  1893. that's

  1894. the

  1895. through

  1896. line

  1897. in all

  1898. of the

  1899. different

  1900. sort of

  1901. groups

  1902. within

  1903. what could

  1904. be called

  1905. theistic

  1906. evolution

  1907. because the

  1908. problem

  1909. is

  1910. unlike

  1911. ID

  1912. which is

  1913. a specific

  1914. thing

  1915. you know

  1916. it's ID

  1917. trademark

  1918. there are

  1919. groups

  1920. saying like

  1921. we are

  1922. part of

  1923. the

  1924. intelligent

  1925. design

  1926. movement

  1927. they have

  1928. institutions

  1929. etc

  1930. theistic

  1931. evolution

  1932. isn't like

  1933. that

  1934. it's not

  1935. a group

  1936. you know

  1937. it's not

  1938. like

  1939. there isn't

  1940. the theistic

  1941. evolution

  1942. center

  1943. right

  1944. it's a

  1945. position

  1946. it's a

  1947. philosophical

  1948. position

  1949. and what

  1950. that means

  1951. is that

  1952. there's

  1953. like a

  1954. huge

  1955. super

  1956. broad

  1957. category

  1958. of

  1959. different

  1960. views

  1961. that could

  1962. be

  1963. identified

  1964. as

  1965. theistic

  1966. evolutionary

  1967. right

  1968. so

  1969. and

  1970. depending

  1971. on

  1972. where

  1973. you are

  1974. on that

  1975. spectrum

  1976. within

  1977. theistic

  1978. evolution

  1979. you're

  1980. going to

  1981. get

  1982. very

  1983. different

  1984. interpretations

  1985. different

  1986. ways that

  1987. this is

  1988. going to

  1989. play out

  1990. in

  1991. in your

  1992. arguments

  1993. so

  1994. just to

  1995. give you

  1996. a small

  1997. taste of

  1998. the different

  1999. forms of

  2000. theistic

  2001. evolutionary

  2002. thought

  2003. you have

  2004. people who

  2005. argue

  2006. that

  2007. for

  2008. something

  2009. that

  2010. could

  2011. be

  2012. called

  2013. evolutionary

  2014. design

  2015. right

  2016. you could

  2017. have

  2018. a group

  2019. that argues

  2020. for

  2021. evolutionary

  2022. creation

  2023. which is

  2024. that

  2025. that

  2026. that is

  2027. associated

  2028. with the

  2029. biologos

  2030. consortium

  2031. evolutionary

  2032. creation

  2033. tends

  2034. to

  2035. disagree

  2036. with

  2037. the

  2038. evolutionary

  2039. design

  2040. arguments

  2041. and I'll

  2042. explain that

  2043. in a second

  2044. you also

  2045. have

  2046. theistic

  2047. evolutionists

  2048. to hold

  2049. a

  2050. deistic

  2051. worldview

  2052. about

  2053. the fact

  2054. that

  2055. God

  2056. set

  2057. the

  2058. clock

  2059. and

  2060. walked

  2061. away

  2062. and

  2063. that's

  2064. all there

  2065. is to

  2066. it

  2067. right

  2068. so

  2069. I mean

  2070. these are

  2071. primarily

  2072. descriptors

  2073. that I'm

  2074. presenting

  2075. one of

  2076. the difficulties

  2077. with a

  2078. philosophical

  2079. position

  2080. is that

  2081. a lot

  2082. of times

  2083. they don't

  2084. really

  2085. define

  2086. their

  2087. terms

  2088. correctly

  2089. or

  2090. differentiate

  2091. themselves

  2092. from other

  2093. groups

  2094. so

  2095. I'm

  2096. trying

  2097. to

  2098. bring

  2099. clarity

  2100. yeah

  2101. yeah

  2102. sorry

  2103. so this

  2104. is

  2105. sort of

  2106. a

  2107. term

  2108. primarily

  2109. used

  2110. by

  2111. Christians

  2112. and it's

  2113. to

  2114. differentiate

  2115. the

  2116. different

  2117. kinds

  2118. of

  2119. evolution

  2120. evolutionary

  2121. theory

  2122. so

  2123. Darwinian

  2124. indicates

  2125. that

  2126. the

  2127. mechanism

  2128. by which

  2129. the

  2130. evolution

  2131. occurs

  2132. the

  2133. transition

  2134. of

  2135. species

  2136. into

  2137. other

  2138. species

  2139. into

  2140. different

  2141. animal

  2142. forms

  2143. the

  2144. method

  2145. by which

  2146. or the

  2147. mechanism

  2148. by which

  2149. that

  2150. happens

  2151. is

  2152. natural

  2153. selection

  2154. and

  2155. adaptation

  2156. well

  2157. neo-Darwinism

  2158. would say

  2159. there's also

  2160. the component

  2161. of genetic

  2162. mutations

  2163. is part

  2164. of that

  2165. genetic

  2166. mutations

  2167. on top

  2168. of

  2169. natural

  2170. selection

  2171. basically

  2172. random

  2173. changes

  2174. in the

  2175. genome

  2176. are then

  2177. sort of

  2178. weeded out

  2179. by nature

  2180. itself

  2181. right

  2182. so

  2183. if you

  2184. have a

  2185. random

  2186. genetic

  2187. variation

  2188. that makes

  2189. you

  2190. better

  2191. slightly

  2192. better

  2193. at

  2194. digesting

  2195. a nut

  2196. and

  2197. you're

  2198. in this

  2199. environment

  2200. that has

  2201. like a

  2202. whole

  2203. bunch

  2204. of

  2205. these

  2206. different

  2207. nuts

  2208. then

  2209. you're

  2210. going

  2211. to be

  2212. better

  2213. fed

  2214. than

  2215. the

  2216. other

  2217. members

  2218. of

  2219. the

  2220. population

  2221. and

  2222. then

  2223. that

  2224. means

  2225. you

  2226. will

  2227. out

  2228. compete

  2229. them

  2230. in terms

  2231. of

  2232. breeding

  2233. etc

  2234. and over

  2235. time

  2236. that

  2237. genetic

  2238. marker

  2239. essentially

  2240. becomes

  2241. dominant

  2242. and

  2243. this

  2244. happens

  2245. over

  2246. and over

  2247. and over

  2248. again

  2249. and over

  2250. time

  2251. these

  2252. small

  2253. changes

  2254. make

  2255. big

  2256. changes

  2257. so

  2258. that's

  2259. what

  2260. the

  2261. macro

  2262. in the

  2263. macro

  2264. evolution

  2265. is

  2266. talking

  2267. about

  2268. macro

  2269. evolution

  2270. is

  2271. talking

  2272. about

  2273. the

  2274. common

  2275. ancestry

  2276. of

  2277. all

  2278. biological

  2279. forms

  2280. starting

  2281. from

  2282. single

  2283. celled

  2284. all the

  2285. way

  2286. through

  2287. there's

  2288. a

  2289. branch

  2290. of

  2291. ancestry

  2292. going

  2293. through

  2294. that

  2295. we're

  2296. all

  2297. connected

  2298. through

  2299. this

  2300. Darwinian

  2301. mechanism

  2302. now

  2303. scientists

  2304. don't use

  2305. the word

  2306. macro

  2307. evolution

  2308. scientists

  2309. would

  2310. just

  2311. say

  2312. evolution

  2313. right

  2314. we

  2315. in the

  2316. Christian

  2317. community

  2318. often

  2319. use

  2320. the

  2321. term

  2322. macro

  2323. evolution

  2324. to

  2325. differentiate

  2326. the

  2327. big

  2328. sort of

  2329. world view

  2330. picture

  2331. of

  2332. Darwinism

  2333. from

  2334. micro

  2335. evolution

  2336. which is

  2337. again

  2338. another

  2339. Christian

  2340. mostly a

  2341. Christian

  2342. term

  2343. which is

  2344. talking

  2345. about how

  2346. that mechanism

  2347. works in

  2348. small scale

  2349. and discrete

  2350. places that

  2351. we can

  2352. actually see

  2353. so

  2354. basically

  2355. nobody

  2356. argues that

  2357. micro evolution

  2358. doesn't happen

  2359. and what

  2360. micro evolution

  2361. is is what

  2362. I just

  2363. described

  2364. that you

  2365. have a

  2366. mutation

  2367. you know

  2368. it makes

  2369. the bird

  2370. better at

  2371. eating a

  2372. nut

  2373. and the

  2374. bird

  2375. proliferates

  2376. and that

  2377. genetic

  2378. marker

  2379. is expanded

  2380. that is

  2381. micro evolution

  2382. something we

  2383. can test

  2384. in nature

  2385. and that's

  2386. what really

  2387. the pioneering

  2388. thought of

  2389. Charles Darwin

  2390. was this

  2391. idea that

  2392. adaptation

  2393. and natural

  2394. selection

  2395. can make

  2396. these changes

  2397. that can

  2398. explain these

  2399. morphological

  2400. changes

  2401. and what

  2402. Christians often

  2403. argue is that

  2404. micro evolution

  2405. is true

  2406. but you can't

  2407. extrapolate the

  2408. micro evolution

  2409. into the past

  2410. to make the

  2411. big worldview

  2412. picture that we

  2413. call micro evolution

  2414. but scientists

  2415. would just call

  2416. everything evolution

  2417. right

  2418. so

  2419. so

  2420. the reason

  2421. I use

  2422. that term

  2423. here

  2424. is because

  2425. if I were

  2426. to say

  2427. theistic

  2428. evolutionists

  2429. argue that

  2430. evolution is

  2431. compatible with

  2432. theistic belief

  2433. it's too

  2434. broad

  2435. because

  2436. most creationists

  2437. almost all

  2438. stripe

  2439. would argue

  2440. that some

  2441. evolution is

  2442. compatible with

  2443. theistic

  2444. belief

  2445. in fact I

  2446. would say

  2447. almost everybody

  2448. says that

  2449. some form of

  2450. evolution

  2451. the argument

  2452. is what

  2453. kind of

  2454. evolution

  2455. what shape

  2456. does it

  2457. take

  2458. and what's

  2459. interesting

  2460. about theistic

  2461. evolution

  2462. what sets

  2463. it apart

  2464. is they

  2465. argue that

  2466. this specific

  2467. Darwinian

  2468. macro evolutionary

  2469. model

  2470. is compatible

  2471. with theistic

  2472. belief

  2473. and that

  2474. argument has

  2475. its own

  2476. discrete

  2477. tensions

  2478. with Christianity

  2479. specifically

  2480. you know

  2481. this descent

  2482. of man

  2483. is one of

  2484. the big

  2485. sticking points

  2486. there

  2487. another

  2488. problem that

  2489. many people

  2490. have is

  2491. with animal

  2492. death

  2493. before the

  2494. fall

  2495. what does

  2496. that look

  2497. like

  2498. how old

  2499. is the

  2500. earth

  2501. Darwinian

  2502. macro

  2503. evolution

  2504. assumes a

  2505. very old

  2506. earth

  2507. has to

  2508. otherwise

  2509. it doesn't

  2510. work

  2511. and so

  2512. if you

  2513. are a

  2514. young

  2515. earth

  2516. creationist

  2517. then you're

  2518. going to

  2519. be like

  2520. that doesn't

  2521. work

  2522. right

  2523. so

  2524. this is

  2525. sort of a

  2526. term of

  2527. art that I'm

  2528. using and I'm

  2529. glad that you

  2530. asked me to

  2531. explain it

  2532. because I'm

  2533. in this stuff

  2534. so much

  2535. that I just

  2536. what's jargon

  2537. and what isn't

  2538. it just kind of

  2539. flies over my

  2540. head

  2541. so

  2542. basically what

  2543. differentiates

  2544. the different

  2545. sort of

  2546. views within

  2547. theistic evolution

  2548. is to what

  2549. extent we can

  2550. say that

  2551. evolution is

  2552. directed

  2553. so if you're

  2554. somebody who

  2555. argues for an

  2556. evolutionary design

  2557. argument

  2558. then you

  2559. would be

  2560. more

  2561. comfortable

  2562. saying that

  2563. God

  2564. set up

  2565. this

  2566. evolutionary

  2567. paradigm

  2568. to

  2569. create

  2570. a specific

  2571. end

  2572. he had

  2573. this end

  2574. the world

  2575. right now

  2576. well

  2577. the world

  2578. pre-fall

  2579. let's say

  2580. but the world

  2581. that resulted

  2582. pre-fall

  2583. that was

  2584. God's

  2585. intention

  2586. and through

  2587. providence

  2588. God created

  2589. that

  2590. we can say

  2591. God created

  2592. that even

  2593. though

  2594. mechanistically

  2595. there's this

  2596. natural

  2597. system

  2598. producing it

  2599. now an

  2600. evolutionary

  2601. creationist

  2602. sort of

  2603. on the

  2604. biologus

  2605. form

  2606. would be

  2607. a little

  2608. less

  2609. comfortable

  2610. with that

  2611. they wouldn't

  2612. be so

  2613. comfortable

  2614. saying that

  2615. God

  2616. specifically

  2617. meant for

  2618. this

  2619. particular

  2620. creation

  2621. at the

  2622. end

  2623. just that

  2624. God

  2625. used

  2626. evolution

  2627. to

  2628. create

  2629. something

  2630. like

  2631. this

  2632. and

  2633. then

  2634. if you

  2635. go all

  2636. the way

  2637. other

  2638. to the

  2639. other

  2640. end

  2641. of the

  2642. spectrum

  2643. on the

  2644. deistic

  2645. side

  2646. now

  2647. sorry

  2648. I should

  2649. be clear

  2650. biologus

  2651. is also

  2652. its own

  2653. big

  2654. spectrum

  2655. of

  2656. different

  2657. beliefs

  2658. I'm

  2659. just

  2660. trying

  2661. to

  2662. paint

  2663. with a

  2664. broad

  2665. brush

  2666. if you're

  2667. on the

  2668. way

  2669. other end

  2670. of the

  2671. deistic

  2672. view

  2673. God

  2674. didn't

  2675. really

  2676. even

  2677. care

  2678. what

  2679. came

  2680. out

  2681. right

  2682. he's

  2683. just

  2684. like

  2685. I'm

  2686. creating

  2687. and look

  2688. oh man

  2689. this

  2690. mechanism

  2691. look at

  2692. that

  2693. it's

  2694. creating

  2695. stuff

  2696. so

  2697. and then

  2698. maybe

  2699. that's

  2700. a

  2701. caricature

  2702. but

  2703. there are

  2704. not many

  2705. Christians

  2706. who would

  2707. argue

  2708. for that

  2709. deistic

  2710. worldview

  2711. in some

  2712. sense

  2713. God is

  2714. directing

  2715. the

  2716. evolutionary

  2717. framework

  2718. so let's

  2719. talk about

  2720. what

  2721. theistic

  2722. evolution

  2723. is not

  2724. it's not

  2725. a scientific

  2726. movement

  2727. they very

  2728. rarely make

  2729. scientific

  2730. arguments

  2731. they don't

  2732. make

  2733. predictions

  2734. they don't

  2735. argue

  2736. for

  2737. they don't

  2738. produce

  2739. their own

  2740. well I mean

  2741. if they're

  2742. scientists

  2743. they may

  2744. produce

  2745. their own

  2746. research

  2747. but not

  2748. as an

  2749. effort

  2750. of

  2751. theistic

  2752. evolution

  2753. and this

  2754. makes sense

  2755. to us

  2756. right

  2757. because

  2758. the

  2759. tenet

  2760. is

  2761. that

  2762. the

  2763. scientific

  2764. consensus

  2765. on

  2766. evolutionary

  2767. theory

  2768. is

  2769. true

  2770. so

  2771. they're

  2772. not

  2773. going

  2774. to

  2775. make

  2776. scientific

  2777. arguments

  2778. for

  2779. theistic

  2780. evolution

  2781. they're

  2782. saying

  2783. their

  2784. argument

  2785. is

  2786. we don't

  2787. have to

  2788. worry

  2789. about

  2790. it

  2791. right

  2792. we don't

  2793. have to

  2794. worry

  2795. about

  2796. the

  2797. scientific

  2798. evidence

  2799. and so

  2800. theistic

  2801. evolutionists

  2802. will often

  2803. disagree

  2804. with

  2805. sort of

  2806. mainstream

  2807. scientists

  2808. on their

  2809. philosophical

  2810. presuppositions

  2811. right

  2812. and their

  2813. big

  2814. worldview

  2815. but they

  2816. don't

  2817. argue

  2818. against

  2819. usually

  2820. the

  2821. science

  2822. that's

  2823. produced

  2824. by this

  2825. institution

  2826. and this

  2827. often

  2828. ends up

  2829. you know

  2830. the problem

  2831. you know

  2832. I feel bad

  2833. for

  2834. the theistic

  2835. evolution

  2836. community

  2837. because

  2838. they get a lot

  2839. of flack

  2840. from

  2841. sort of

  2842. Christians

  2843. creationist

  2844. Christians

  2845. right

  2846. but then also

  2847. they don't

  2848. get a lot

  2849. of respect

  2850. from the

  2851. scientific

  2852. community

  2853. either

  2854. you know

  2855. the scientific

  2856. community

  2857. says

  2858. you guys

  2859. are just

  2860. adding

  2861. you know

  2862. this

  2863. this

  2864. you know

  2865. sky

  2866. the sky

  2867. guy

  2868. to our

  2869. movement

  2870. and we

  2871. don't

  2872. I mean

  2873. this

  2874. in our

  2875. theory

  2876. we don't

  2877. need it

  2878. so

  2879. I feel

  2880. bad

  2881. they get

  2882. hit

  2883. all over

  2884. the

  2885. place

  2886. so

  2887. they don't

  2888. they rarely

  2889. actually even

  2890. argue from a

  2891. scientific

  2892. position

  2893. now

  2894. often times

  2895. they'll

  2896. argue

  2897. maybe

  2898. with

  2899. a critic

  2900. of

  2901. evolution

  2902. right

  2903. they'll

  2904. argue

  2905. for

  2906. sort of

  2907. the

  2908. mainstream

  2909. consensus

  2910. scientific

  2911. position

  2912. on it

  2913. but that's

  2914. really not

  2915. the thrust

  2916. of their

  2917. argument

  2918. the thrust

  2919. of their

  2920. argument

  2921. is that

  2922. we can

  2923. live in

  2924. harmony

  2925. theistic

  2926. I mean

  2927. evolution

  2928. can be

  2929. in harmony

  2930. with the

  2931. Christian

  2932. worldview

  2933. or theism

  2934. in general

  2935. I should

  2936. say

  2937. so the

  2938. scientific

  2939. arguments

  2940. are usually

  2941. tertiary

  2942. so

  2943. when we're

  2944. talking about

  2945. intelligent

  2946. design

  2947. versus

  2948. theistic

  2949. evolution

  2950. because there

  2951. has been

  2952. quite a bit

  2953. of argumentation

  2954. between these

  2955. two different

  2956. groups

  2957. you can

  2958. see why

  2959. a lot

  2960. of times

  2961. they don't

  2962. really get

  2963. anywhere

  2964. and the

  2965. problem

  2966. is

  2967. and this

  2968. is something

  2969. that people

  2970. in both

  2971. camps

  2972. would acknowledge

  2973. the problem

  2974. is they

  2975. are different

  2976. movements

  2977. trying to do

  2978. different

  2979. things

  2980. and they

  2981. have

  2982. different

  2983. philosophical

  2984. positions

  2985. that that's

  2986. usually not

  2987. where the

  2988. argumentation

  2989. is happening

  2990. right

  2991. so if you're

  2992. an intelligent

  2993. design

  2994. proponent

  2995. you're going

  2996. to be

  2997. arguing

  2998. scientifically

  2999. that

  3000. you know

  3001. XYZ

  3002. scientific

  3003. argument

  3004. is invalid

  3005. the

  3006. theistic

  3007. evolutionist

  3008. doesn't want

  3009. to deal

  3010. with that

  3011. they're like

  3012. I don't

  3013. want to

  3014. even deal

  3015. with that

  3016. I want

  3017. to deal

  3018. with why

  3019. you think

  3020. that's a

  3021. problem

  3022. right

  3023. and so

  3024. usually

  3025. these

  3026. discussions

  3027. go round

  3028. and round

  3029. in circles

  3030. and so

  3031. what I want

  3032. to do

  3033. in this

  3034. class

  3035. for the

  3036. third

  3037. class

  3038. is discuss

  3039. what

  3040. is one

  3041. of those

  3042. major

  3043. philosophical

  3044. disagreements

  3045. that each

  3046. side has

  3047. that determines

  3048. their openness

  3049. to these

  3050. different views

  3051. right

  3052. why

  3053. would

  3054. somebody

  3055. be more

  3056. convinced

  3057. by an

  3058. intelligent

  3059. design

  3060. argument

  3061. from science

  3062. than they

  3063. would be

  3064. from a

  3065. theistic

  3066. evolution

  3067. perspective

  3068. what theological

  3069. argument

  3070. are they

  3071. making

  3072. so

  3073. that is

  3074. what I

  3075. want to

  3076. talk about

  3077. in this

  3078. class

  3079. there are

  3080. a lot

  3081. of things

  3082. I could

  3083. talk about

  3084. there are

  3085. a lot

  3086. of things

  3087. that I

  3088. would like

  3089. to talk

  3090. about

  3091. but I

  3092. felt like

  3093. if my

  3094. goal

  3095. in the

  3096. course

  3097. is to

  3098. provide

  3099. tools

  3100. for

  3101. this

  3102. church

  3103. specifically

  3104. to have

  3105. cordial

  3106. and beneficial

  3107. discussions

  3108. with each

  3109. other on

  3110. these issues

  3111. without it

  3112. becoming

  3113. superheated

  3114. you know

  3115. things get

  3116. heated

  3117. sometimes

  3118. but

  3119. superheated

  3120. is I

  3121. want to

  3122. give

  3123. hopefully

  3124. some tools

  3125. to understand

  3126. the other

  3127. person's

  3128. position

  3129. so you

  3130. can argue

  3131. at that

  3132. plane

  3133. or on

  3134. other

  3135. planes

  3136. but with

  3137. that in

  3138. mind

  3139. so we

  3140. don't get

  3141. too

  3142. confused

  3143. and angry

  3144. so what

  3145. are the

  3146. two

  3147. tensions

  3148. these are

  3149. going to be

  3150. the topics

  3151. of my

  3152. next two

  3153. classes

  3154. the first

  3155. tension

  3156. is general

  3157. versus special

  3158. revelation

  3159. I already

  3160. talked about

  3161. this

  3162. how do we

  3163. balance

  3164. these two

  3165. basically

  3166. this class

  3167. is going

  3168. to be

  3169. why are

  3170. we even

  3171. talking

  3172. about

  3173. this

  3174. why even

  3175. talk about

  3176. intelligent

  3177. design

  3178. and theistic

  3179. evolution

  3180. right

  3181. the bible

  3182. tells us

  3183. everything

  3184. we need

  3185. to know

  3186. right

  3187. or does

  3188. it

  3189. or should

  3190. we think

  3191. it does

  3192. that is

  3193. what this

  3194. class is

  3195. going to

  3196. be about

  3197. my next

  3198. class

  3199. the class

  3200. after that

  3201. the final

  3202. one

  3203. is going

  3204. to be

  3205. talking

  3206. about

  3207. how we

  3208. balance

  3209. how we

  3210. understand

  3211. God's

  3212. activity

  3213. in the

  3214. world

  3215. is God

  3216. primarily

  3217. acting

  3218. in the

  3219. world

  3220. in creation

  3221. through his

  3222. primary

  3223. agent

  3224. I use

  3225. primary way

  3226. too many

  3227. times in

  3228. that sentence

  3229. does

  3230. God

  3231. usually

  3232. is God

  3233. working

  3234. in creation

  3235. through

  3236. primary

  3237. causation

  3238. meaning

  3239. is he

  3240. doing

  3241. something

  3242. like we

  3243. as we

  3244. would think

  3245. of an

  3246. engineer

  3247. is he

  3248. creating

  3249. the parts

  3250. and is he

  3251. putting them

  3252. together

  3253. as the

  3254. analogy

  3255. would go

  3256. is that

  3257. is he

  3258. working

  3259. primarily

  3260. that way

  3261. like an

  3262. artist

  3263. or is he

  3264. creating

  3265. in secondary

  3266. causation

  3267. sort of

  3268. in a

  3269. sovereign

  3270. providential

  3271. way

  3272. is he

  3273. creating

  3274. a system

  3275. that can

  3276. create

  3277. other

  3278. other

  3279. ends

  3280. and by

  3281. providence

  3282. by secondary

  3283. causation

  3284. we can

  3285. say God

  3286. created

  3287. right

  3288. that is

  3289. the central

  3290. tension

  3291. I think

  3292. between

  3293. intelligent

  3294. design

  3295. and theistic

  3296. evolution

  3297. is what

  3298. should we

  3299. expect God's

  3300. activity in

  3301. the world

  3302. to look

  3303. like

  3304. and based

  3305. on that

  3306. what

  3307. what

  3308. what is a

  3309. compelling

  3310. argument from

  3311. either

  3312. from either

  3313. side of

  3314. that

  3315. so with

  3316. that

  3317. I will

  3318. end the

  3319. class

  3320. and

  3321. take any

  3322. questions

  3323. my goal

  3324. is hopefully

  3325. to expand

  3326. our

  3327. our minds

  3328. so that we

  3329. can

  3330. we can

  3331. better

  3332. discuss

  3333. things

  3334. because this

  3335. is a really

  3336. fun discussion

  3337. and it should

  3338. be fun

  3339. it should

  3340. be less

  3341. angry

  3342. that's the

  3343. first time

  3344. I've heard

  3345. anyone

  3346. describe

  3347. this as

  3348. fun

  3349. within

  3350. the

  3351. church

  3352. so

  3353. the

  3354. clarity

  3355. is helpful

  3356. and the

  3357. history

  3358. and the

  3359. background

  3360. is helpful

  3361. yeah I

  3362. mean I

  3363. should say

  3364. that I'm

  3365. not a

  3366. historian

  3367. even though

  3368. I like to

  3369. think of

  3370. myself as

  3371. one

  3372. I

  3373. there are

  3374. many ways

  3375. to discuss

  3376. the

  3377. fundamentalist

  3378. modernist

  3379. discussion

  3380. I was

  3381. trying to

  3382. focus

  3383. primarily

  3384. on the

  3385. changes

  3386. in the

  3387. scientific

  3388. community

  3389. but we

  3390. can talk

  3391. about

  3392. philosophical

  3393. disagreements

  3394. metaphysical

  3395. stuff

  3396. theological

  3397. stuff

  3398. that I

  3399. would

  3400. very much

  3401. not be

  3402. qualified

  3403. to talk

  3404. about

  3405. at all

  3406. I'm

  3407. barely

  3408. qualified

  3409. to talk

  3410. about

  3411. this

  3412. so

  3413. but yes

  3414. I was

  3415. hoping

  3416. that it

  3417. would

  3418. sort of

  3419. provide

  3420. a place

  3421. for that

  3422. Tyler

  3423. could you

  3424. describe

  3425. the

  3426. hermeneutical

  3427. tension

  3428. that exists

  3429. within

  3430. these two

  3431. camps

  3432. we're

  3433. in

  3434. hermeneutics

  3435. in interpreting

  3436. Genesis

  3437. where does

  3438. the rubber

  3439. hit the

  3440. road

  3441. and how

  3442. they

  3443. understand

  3444. what

  3445. Genesis

  3446. is

  3447. teaching

  3448. yes

  3449. so

  3450. that is

  3451. mostly

  3452. what

  3453. next

  3454. class

  3455. is

  3456. going

  3457. to be

  3458. about

  3459. but

  3460. because

  3461. I

  3462. like

  3463. you

  3464. so

  3465. much

  3466. I

  3467. know

  3468. generally

  3469. so

  3470. the

  3471. rubber

  3472. hits

  3473. the

  3474. road

  3475. when

  3476. it

  3477. comes

  3478. to

  3479. what

  3480. you

  3481. believe

  3482. the

  3483. purpose

  3484. of

  3485. Genesis

  3486. is

  3487. what

  3488. is

  3489. Genesis

  3490. trying

  3491. to

  3492. convey

  3493. right

  3494. and

  3495. what

  3496. I'll

  3497. talk

  3498. about

  3499. next

  3500. week

  3501. is

  3502. the

  3503. basic

  3504. argument

  3505. that

  3506. the

  3507. literal

  3508. interpretation

  3509. of a

  3510. biblical

  3511. passage

  3512. is

  3513. not

  3514. necessarily

  3515. by

  3516. definition

  3517. the

  3518. correct

  3519. interpretation

  3520. right

  3521. often

  3522. it is

  3523. but

  3524. sometimes

  3525. it's

  3526. not

  3527. and

  3528. how

  3529. can

  3530. we

  3531. understand

  3532. that

  3533. in

  3534. relationship

  3535. to

  3536. Genesis

  3537. right

  3538. and

  3539. Christians

  3540. come down

  3541. on so

  3542. many

  3543. different

  3544. sides

  3545. on this

  3546. and

  3547. that's

  3548. what

  3549. I

  3550. hope

  3551. to

  3552. overview

  3553. next

  3554. week

  3555. is

  3556. how

  3557. we

  3558. come

  3559. down

  3560. on

  3561. different

  3562. sides

  3563. of

  3564. this

  3565. but

  3566. at

  3567. the

  3568. end

  3569. of

  3570. the

  3571. day

  3572. it

  3573. comes

  3574. down

  3575. to

  3576. what

  3577. is

  3578. Genesis

  3579. trying

  3580. to

  3581. convey

  3582. and

  3583. there

  3584. are

  3585. positions

  3586. that

  3587. I

  3588. would

  3589. say

  3590. that

  3591. is

  3592. not

  3593. allowed

  3594. right

  3595. and

  3596. I'll

  3597. talk

  3598. about

  3599. that

  3600. next

  3601. week

  3602. but

  3603. there

  3604. is

  3605. I

  3606. feel

  3607. like

  3608. there's

  3609. a

  3610. lot

  3611. of

  3612. room

  3613. there

  3614. for

  3615. discussion

  3616. the

  3617. difficulty

  3618. is

  3619. how

  3620. do

  3621. you

  3622. look

  3623. at

  3624. it

  3625. with

  3626. clear

  3627. eyes

  3628. and

  3629. absent

  3630. the

  3631. tension

  3632. that

  3633. we're

  3634. talking

  3635. about

  3636. right

  3637. because

  3638. if

  3639. you

  3640. think

  3641. about

  3642. what

  3643. the

  3644. correct

  3645. interpretation

  3646. of

  3647. Genesis

  3648. is

  3649. has

  3650. nothing

  3651. to

  3652. do

  3653. with

  3654. our

  3655. disagreements

  3656. with

  3657. scientific

  3658. materialism

  3659. and

  3660. our

  3661. attempts

  3662. to

  3663. understand

  3664. what

  3665. the

  3666. facts

  3667. on

  3668. the

  3669. ground

  3670. are

  3671. right

  3672. Genesis

  3673. has

  3674. its

  3675. own

  3676. message

  3677. to

  3678. tell

  3679. us

  3680. and

  3681. sometimes

  3682. it's

  3683. hard

  3684. to

  3685. separate

  3686. those

  3687. two

  3688. and

  3689. but

  3690. that's

  3691. you know

  3692. that's

  3693. the way

  3694. I think

  3695. it should

  3696. be done

  3697. so we'll

  3698. talk about

  3699. that next

  3700. week

  3701. but yeah

  3702. any

  3703. other

  3704. questions

  3705. clarifying

  3706. questions

  3707. you can

  3708. ask another

  3709. question

  3710. if you

  3711. want

  3712. Beth

  3713. oh

  3714. real quick

  3715. so

  3716. Francis Collins

  3717. the human

  3718. genome

  3719. project

  3720. yep

  3721. where does

  3722. he fall

  3723. in the

  3724. in the

  3725. is he

  3726. intelligent

  3727. design

  3728. or is he

  3729. a theistic

  3730. evolutionist

  3731. or is he

  3732. so he

  3733. is definitely

  3734. a theistic

  3735. evolutionist

  3736. he is the

  3737. founder of

  3738. the BioLogos

  3739. group

  3740. so he

  3741. he wrote a

  3742. book

  3743. I believe

  3744. called the

  3745. language of

  3746. God

  3747. if I'm

  3748. not mistaken

  3749. and in

  3750. that he

  3751. makes the

  3752. argument

  3753. for theistic

  3754. evolution

  3755. and that

  3756. is what

  3757. or what he

  3758. would call

  3759. evolutionary

  3760. creation

  3761. because it

  3762. has its

  3763. own

  3764. like I was

  3765. trying to

  3766. explain in

  3767. the broad

  3768. scheme of

  3769. things

  3770. it has its

  3771. own

  3772. arguments

  3773. so yeah

  3774. he's definitely

  3775. a theistic

  3776. evolutionist

  3777. yeah

  3778. can you

  3779. tell us a

  3780. little bit

  3781. about what

  3782. you do

  3783. and what

  3784. your work

  3785. is and

  3786. also about

  3787. the interplay

  3788. of your

  3789. faith with

  3790. that

  3791. oh sure

  3792. yeah

  3793. so I

  3794. am a

  3795. scientist

  3796. what I

  3797. do is

  3798. I guess

  3799. technically

  3800. science

  3801. most of

  3802. the time

  3803. I make

  3804. bunches

  3805. of mistakes

  3806. so I

  3807. work in a

  3808. field called

  3809. tissue

  3810. engineering

  3811. in this

  3812. field

  3813. what we

  3814. do

  3815. is we

  3816. take

  3817. biological

  3818. cells

  3819. and we're

  3820. trying to

  3821. apply them

  3822. to three

  3823. dimensional

  3824. synthetic

  3825. scaffolds

  3826. to create

  3827. a therapeutic

  3828. so in

  3829. my

  3830. sorry I

  3831. touched the

  3832. microphone

  3833. rule number

  3834. one

  3835. don't touch

  3836. the microphone

  3837. so in

  3838. my lab

  3839. that means

  3840. we create

  3841. biodegradable

  3842. tubes

  3843. we seed

  3844. smooth muscle

  3845. cells on

  3846. them to

  3847. create an

  3848. artificial

  3849. vessel

  3850. for people

  3851. for instance

  3852. who have

  3853. had coronary

  3854. artery

  3855. disease

  3856. or other

  3857. vascular

  3858. diseases

  3859. so that's

  3860. what I

  3861. work on

  3862. I actually

  3863. more specifically

  3864. work on

  3865. sort of the

  3866. large animal

  3867. testing of

  3868. that

  3869. how can

  3870. we test

  3871. these

  3872. in large

  3873. animals

  3874. before we

  3875. test them

  3876. in humans

  3877. to make

  3878. sure that

  3879. they're safe

  3880. but yeah

  3881. generally that's

  3882. what I work

  3883. on

  3884. although

  3885. my

  3886. background

  3887. is in

  3888. biochemistry

  3889. so

  3890. at the

  3891. graduate

  3892. level

  3893. it is a

  3894. little

  3895. fuzzy

  3896. what I

  3897. do

  3898. I'm

  3899. technically

  3900. in

  3901. pathology

  3902. because I

  3903. work on

  3904. diseases

  3905. but I

  3906. don't really

  3907. do

  3908. pathology

  3909. it's very

  3910. confusing

  3911. I'll get a

  3912. degree in

  3913. pathology

  3914. I don't know

  3915. what that'll

  3916. do for me

  3917. but yeah

  3918. so I'm a

  3919. biochemist

  3920. who works

  3921. on cells

  3922. basically

  3923. is what I

  3924. would say

  3925. and how

  3926. does that

  3927. work with

  3928. my faith

  3929. that's an

  3930. interesting

  3931. question

  3932. I was

  3933. homeschooled

  3934. growing up

  3935. me and

  3936. my eight

  3937. other siblings

  3938. were all

  3939. homeschooled

  3940. and my

  3941. mom was

  3942. the daughter

  3943. of a

  3944. medical

  3945. doctor

  3946. and from

  3947. the time

  3948. that she

  3949. was young

  3950. she loved

  3951. science

  3952. all the way

  3953. through

  3954. she was

  3955. an artist

  3956. but she

  3957. wanted to

  3958. actually

  3959. what she

  3960. was in

  3961. college for

  3962. was to

  3963. do the

  3964. medical

  3965. illustrations

  3966. so if

  3967. you go

  3968. into an

  3969. anatomy

  3970. textbook

  3971. and you

  3972. see the

  3973. picture of

  3974. the heart

  3975. that's what

  3976. she wanted

  3977. to do

  3978. and she

  3979. was doing

  3980. that

  3981. before she

  3982. got married

  3983. and had

  3984. a billion

  3985. kids

  3986. so she

  3987. really loves

  3988. science

  3989. she really

  3990. loved learning

  3991. loved

  3992. she's still

  3993. alive

  3994. she's coming

  3995. tomorrow

  3996. to my

  3997. house

  3998. so don't

  3999. worry about

  4000. that

  4001. but

  4002. she

  4003. loved

  4004. science

  4005. and so

  4006. from an

  4007. early age

  4008. we just

  4009. were sort

  4010. of saturated

  4011. in this

  4012. culture of

  4013. loving

  4014. science

  4015. you know

  4016. ironically

  4017. I would

  4018. say if I

  4019. had to look

  4020. back and

  4021. place myself

  4022. sort of in

  4023. a tradition

  4024. I would say

  4025. I grew up

  4026. in a

  4027. fundamentalist

  4028. household

  4029. but we

  4030. didn't really

  4031. ever see

  4032. a problem

  4033. with that

  4034. and the

  4035. love of

  4036. science

  4037. so

  4038. anyways

  4039. that's

  4040. where I

  4041. I've come

  4042. from

  4043. my oldest

  4044. brother

  4045. is a

  4046. biochemist

  4047. my next

  4048. oldest

  4049. brother

  4050. has a

  4051. degree

  4052. in

  4053. chemical

  4054. engineering

  4055. my next

  4056. oldest

  4057. brother

  4058. is a

  4059. nurse

  4060. I'm

  4061. next

  4062. I'm

  4063. whatever

  4064. I am

  4065. and then

  4066. my younger

  4067. brother

  4068. is a

  4069. biochemist

  4070. so there's

  4071. a lot

  4072. of scientists

  4073. in my

  4074. family

  4075. which is

  4076. great

  4077. I mean

  4078. you know

  4079. it's a

  4080. testament

  4081. to my

  4082. mom

  4083. and her

  4084. love

  4085. of it

  4086. neither

  4087. of my

  4088. parents

  4089. had any

  4090. college

  4091. degrees

  4092. but education

  4093. and science

  4094. were very

  4095. important to

  4096. them

  4097. and then

  4098. theologically

  4099. we were

  4100. doing a

  4101. bunch of

  4102. apologetics

  4103. so that

  4104. sort of

  4105. helped

  4106. in any

  4107. of the

  4108. places

  4109. where I

  4110. would

  4111. normally

  4112. if you

  4113. hear the

  4114. back story

  4115. of the

  4116. person

  4117. who's

  4118. into

  4119. science

  4120. but they

  4121. were like

  4122. oh man

  4123. Christianity

  4124. apologetics

  4125. really helps

  4126. with a lot

  4127. of the

  4128. dissonance

  4129. that you

  4130. would

  4131. normally

  4132. feel

  4133. just to

  4134. know

  4135. that there

  4136. are people

  4137. out there

  4138. who acknowledge

  4139. you know

  4140. who are

  4141. willing to

  4142. acknowledge

  4143. the scientific

  4144. information

  4145. and don't

  4146. see a

  4147. problem

  4148. with that

  4149. with

  4150. Christianity

  4151. it's really

  4152. a confidence

  4153. building thing

  4154. and I would

  4155. suggest that

  4156. everybody do

  4157. that with

  4158. their kids

  4159. get them

  4160. into

  4161. apologetics

  4162. it'll

  4163. help

  4164. them

  4165. yeah

  4166. thanks for

  4167. that

  4168. any other

  4169. questions

  4170. yeah

  4171. Amos

  4172. lay it

  4173. on me

  4174. he's the

  4175. real scientist

  4176. in the room

  4177. I don't

  4178. he actually

  4179. does real

  4180. stuff

  4181. not a

  4182. scientist

  4183. anymore

  4184. no

  4185. my question

  4186. is

  4187. evolution

  4188. is kind

  4189. of tricky

  4190. to discuss

  4191. because

  4192. you know

  4193. getting into

  4194. like kind

  4195. of the

  4196. facts

  4197. is

  4198. hard

  4199. yeah

  4200. but

  4201. physics

  4202. I've

  4203. found

  4204. to be

  4205. a little

  4206. bit

  4207. simpler

  4208. in some

  4209. ways

  4210. yeah

  4211. and it

  4212. makes

  4213. some

  4214. you know

  4215. the

  4216. physicists

  4217. make some

  4218. pretty

  4219. concrete

  4220. claims

  4221. like

  4222. specifically

  4223. age of

  4224. the

  4225. universe

  4226. yeah

  4227. so

  4228. like in

  4229. one hand

  4230. biology is

  4231. messy

  4232. any

  4233. biologist

  4234. would

  4235. disagree

  4236. with

  4237. that

  4238. yeah

  4239. physics

  4240. is a

  4241. little

  4242. bit

  4243. cleaner

  4244. yeah

  4245. in that

  4246. sense

  4247. but it

  4248. seems like

  4249. the

  4250. discussions

  4251. tend to

  4252. focus on

  4253. biology

  4254. and evolution

  4255. and

  4256. yeah

  4257. but it

  4258. seems like

  4259. the first

  4260. quite like

  4261. in order to

  4262. assess micro

  4263. versus macro

  4264. the first

  4265. thing you

  4266. have to do

  4267. is decide

  4268. how old

  4269. you think

  4270. because

  4271. obviously

  4272. small changes

  4273. can add up

  4274. to big

  4275. changes

  4276. right

  4277. yeah

  4278. of course

  4279. very definition

  4280. of you know

  4281. that's a

  4282. mathematical

  4283. statement

  4284. right

  4285. so the

  4286. first thing

  4287. you have

  4288. to do

  4289. is decide

  4290. how many

  4291. years

  4292. has

  4293. evolution

  4294. has

  4295. micro

  4296. evolution

  4297. which

  4298. everybody

  4299. agrees

  4300. with

  4301. how many

  4302. years

  4303. has

  4304. micro

  4305. evolution

  4306. had a

  4307. chance

  4308. to operate

  4309. yeah

  4310. before you

  4311. start even

  4312. deciding

  4313. what could

  4314. or could

  4315. not have

  4316. happened

  4317. or you

  4318. know

  4319. where

  4320. you know

  4321. where the

  4322. where you

  4323. draw the line

  4324. between micro

  4325. which everybody

  4326. agrees with

  4327. and macro

  4328. which

  4329. if you're

  4330. using the

  4331. phrase

  4332. you're

  4333. maybe saying

  4334. that you

  4335. don't agree

  4336. with

  4337. right

  4338. right

  4339. yeah

  4340. you're using

  4341. that phrase

  4342. to outline

  4343. the category

  4344. of things

  4345. exactly

  4346. yeah

  4347. so there's

  4348. kind of like

  4349. a

  4350. how do I

  4351. say it

  4352. what's my

  4353. question

  4354. where

  4355. why is it

  4356. that people

  4357. or do people

  4358. tend to talk

  4359. more about

  4360. evolution

  4361. more so than

  4362. physics

  4363. or

  4364. yeah I think

  4365. it depends

  4366. on your

  4367. your area

  4368. I find

  4369. that

  4370. philosophers

  4371. professional

  4372. philosophers

  4373. like William Lane

  4374. Craig

  4375. Alvin

  4376. Plantinga

  4377. these guys

  4378. really

  4379. didn't really

  4380. like to talk

  4381. about biology

  4382. at all

  4383. you know

  4384. they wanted

  4385. to talk

  4386. about physics

  4387. because like

  4388. you said

  4389. it's very

  4390. clear

  4391. you know

  4392. William Lane

  4393. Craig is

  4394. famous for

  4395. his

  4396. his reworking

  4397. of the

  4398. cosmological

  4399. argument

  4400. Alvin

  4401. Plantinga

  4402. has his

  4403. own

  4404. set of

  4405. philosophical

  4406. arguments

  4407. like the

  4408. contingency

  4409. argument

  4410. but the

  4411. philosophers

  4412. I've

  4413. found

  4414. are

  4415. more

  4416. comfortable

  4417. talking

  4418. about

  4419. the

  4420. evidence

  4421. for God

  4422. in physics

  4423. and actually

  4424. I would

  4425. I should

  4426. say that

  4427. intelligent

  4428. design

  4429. people

  4430. and

  4431. theistic

  4432. evolutionists

  4433. both agree

  4434. on arguments

  4435. such as

  4436. the fine

  4437. tuning

  4438. argument

  4439. of physics

  4440. they are

  4441. they agree

  4442. on

  4443. mostly

  4444. on

  4445. the

  4446. cosmological

  4447. arguments

  4448. for God

  4449. they would

  4450. agree

  4451. on the

  4452. contingency

  4453. arguments

  4454. so

  4455. I think

  4456. sometimes

  4457. the reason

  4458. that

  4459. biology

  4460. is

  4461. in the

  4462. forefront

  4463. from a lot

  4464. of these

  4465. discussions

  4466. is that

  4467. there's

  4468. less

  4469. agreement

  4470. there is

  4471. more

  4472. agreement

  4473. on the

  4474. physics

  4475. side

  4476. of things

  4477. but

  4478. I

  4479. understand

  4480. what

  4481. your

  4482. argument

  4483. is

  4484. which

  4485. is

  4486. I

  4487. would

  4488. say

  4489. that

  4490. for

  4491. when it

  4492. comes to

  4493. the age

  4494. of the

  4495. earth

  4496. there

  4497. are

  4498. a

  4499. variety

  4500. of

  4501. different

  4502. streams

  4503. of

  4504. evidence

  4505. that

  4506. seem

  4507. to

  4508. indicate

  4509. an

  4510. age

  4511. an

  4512. old

  4513. earth

  4514. right

  4515. now

  4516. young

  4517. earth

  4518. creationists

  4519. would

  4520. either

  4521. dispute

  4522. each

  4523. of these

  4524. different

  4525. lines

  4526. of

  4527. evidence

  4528. on their

  4529. own

  4530. terms

  4531. or

  4532. they

  4533. would

  4534. argue

  4535. in

  4536. general

  4537. of

  4538. they

  4539. would

  4540. make

  4541. a

  4542. philosophical

  4543. argument

  4544. about

  4545. what

  4546. the

  4547. capabilities

  4548. of

  4549. science

  4550. are

  4551. to

  4552. discuss

  4553. the

  4554. earth

  4555. but

  4556. you're

  4557. right

  4558. the

  4559. thing

  4560. is

  4561. if

  4562. you're

  4563. a

  4564. young

  4565. earth

  4566. creationist

  4567. evolution

  4568. is

  4569. impossible

  4570. right

  4571. because

  4572. the

  4573. age

  4574. of

  4575. the

  4576. universe

  4577. precludes

  4578. that

  4579. possibility

  4580. so

  4581. you're

  4582. right

  4583. one of

  4584. the

  4585. reasons

  4586. I

  4587. wanted

  4588. to

  4589. do

  4590. the

  4591. next

  4592. class

  4593. which

  4594. is

  4595. on

  4596. the

  4597. balance

  4598. between

  4599. general

  4600. and

  4601. special

  4602. revelation

  4603. is

  4604. because

  4605. in

  4606. this

  4607. class

  4608. in a

  4609. lot

  4610. of

  4611. ways

  4612. it's

  4613. sort

  4614. of

  4615. excluding

  4616. a lot

  4617. of

  4618. young

  4619. earth

  4620. creationists

  4621. because

  4622. they

  4623. would

  4624. just

  4625. say

  4626. why

  4627. why

  4628. are we

  4629. even

  4630. talking

  4631. about it

  4632. right

  4633. because

  4634. it's

  4635. impossible

  4636. what

  4637. what

  4638. I

  4639. want

  4640. to

  4641. bring

  4642. them

  4643. into

  4644. the

  4645. discussion

  4646. and

  4647. explain

  4648. where

  4649. they

  4650. come

  4651. from

  4652. where

  4653. other

  4654. positions

  4655. are

  4656. coming

  4657. from

  4658. and

  4659. if

  4660. you

  4661. think

  4662. about it

  4663. if

  4664. intelligent

  4665. design

  4666. is the

  4667. argument

  4668. that we

  4669. can

  4670. see

  4671. the

  4672. detectable

  4673. evidence

  4674. of

  4675. design

  4676. in

  4677. nature

  4678. you

  4679. would

  4680. expect

  4681. a

  4682. young

  4683. earth

  4684. creationist

  4685. to be

  4686. like

  4687. obviously

  4688. right

  4689. because

  4690. nature

  4691. animals

  4692. human

  4693. beings

  4694. all of

  4695. nature

  4696. was

  4697. specially

  4698. created

  4699. in a

  4700. miracle

  4701. right

  4702. and so

  4703. they

  4704. would

  4705. they are

  4706. all

  4707. from what

  4708. I understand

  4709. almost all

  4710. young

  4711. earth

  4712. creationists

  4713. are

  4714. ID

  4715. proponents

  4716. but

  4717. they

  4718. at the

  4719. same

  4720. time

  4721. would

  4722. say

  4723. well

  4724. a lot

  4725. of

  4726. those

  4727. ID

  4728. guys

  4729. they're

  4730. older

  4731. creationists

  4732. you know

  4733. they don't

  4734. they don't

  4735. really know

  4736. what's

  4737. going on

  4738. but their

  4739. arguments

  4740. about

  4741. science

  4742. are good

  4743. right

  4744. and so

  4745. yeah

  4746. the problem

  4747. is because

  4748. of all

  4749. these

  4750. overlapping

  4751. arguments

  4752. because

  4753. really

  4754. the age

  4755. of the

  4756. earth

  4757. is sort

  4758. of a

  4759. backdrop

  4760. in which

  4761. the scientific

  4762. discussion

  4763. of biology

  4764. is happening

  4765. right

  4766. and so

  4767. for me

  4768. to do

  4769. a class

  4770. on

  4771. intelligent

  4772. design

  4773. versus

  4774. theistic

  4775. evolution

  4776. I have

  4777. to sort

  4778. of

  4779. I want

  4780. to acknowledge

  4781. the backdrop

  4782. but I have

  4783. to sort

  4784. of move

  4785. in to

  4786. the specific

  4787. arguments

  4788. of biology

  4789. so yeah

  4790. it's a

  4791. tough

  4792. picture

  4793. you know

  4794. and I

  4795. think

  4796. there are

  4797. if

  4798. one of the

  4799. reasons why

  4800. I felt

  4801. inadequate

  4802. doing this

  4803. class

  4804. is because

  4805. I could do

  4806. a whole

  4807. class

  4808. just on

  4809. young earth

  4810. creationism

  4811. and their

  4812. various arguments

  4813. for

  4814. the age

  4815. of the

  4816. universe

  4817. age of the

  4818. earth

  4819. their biblical

  4820. arguments

  4821. I want

  4822. to touch

  4823. a little

  4824. bit on

  4825. that

  4826. next

  4827. week

  4828. but I'm

  4829. not going

  4830. to do

  4831. them

  4832. justice

  4833. and I

  4834. feel

  4835. you know

  4836. I want

  4837. to make

  4838. sure that

  4839. they know

  4840. that I

  4841. know

  4842. that there

  4843. are people

  4844. who do

  4845. them

  4846. justice

  4847. right

  4848. whether or

  4849. not we

  4850. agree

  4851. with

  4852. them

  4853. right

  4854. you

  4855. mentioned

  4856. the

  4857. your

  4858. gratitude

  4859. for

  4860. apologetics

  4861. but

  4862. I wanted

  4863. to kind

  4864. of talk

  4865. about that

  4866. a little

  4867. because I

  4868. remember

  4869. a lot

  4870. of my

  4871. youth

  4872. group

  4873. apologetics

  4874. classes

  4875. being

  4876. more

  4877. of a

  4878. sword

  4879. to use

  4880. against

  4881. arguments

  4882. so

  4883. it would

  4884. be

  4885. my

  4886. thought

  4887. is

  4888. that

  4889. they

  4890. ultimately

  4891. failed me

  4892. is kind

  4893. of what

  4894. I was

  4895. going to

  4896. get at

  4897. and my

  4898. thought

  4899. is

  4900. going

  4901. through

  4902. this

  4903. is

  4904. seeing

  4905. that

  4906. it

  4907. seems

  4908. like

  4909. it

  4910. was

  4911. one

  4912. of a

  4913. couple

  4914. things

  4915. that

  4916. broke

  4917. down

  4918. was

  4919. that

  4920. it

  4921. was

  4922. either

  4923. philosophical

  4924. arguments

  4925. being put

  4926. forward

  4927. as

  4928. scientific

  4929. arguments

  4930. or

  4931. to

  4932. defeat

  4933. scientific

  4934. arguments

  4935. on the

  4936. opposing

  4937. side

  4938. or

  4939. cherry

  4940. picking

  4941. examples

  4942. for example

  4943. giraffes

  4944. have

  4945. these

  4946. special

  4947. mechanisms

  4948. in their

  4949. necks

  4950. so that

  4951. their brains

  4952. don't explode

  4953. when they

  4954. bend over

  4955. how would

  4956. that evolve

  4957. maybe that's

  4958. worth something

  4959. but then

  4960. you put

  4961. that forward

  4962. there's always

  4963. someone who's

  4964. going to be

  4965. able to

  4966. come back

  4967. at you

  4968. with three

  4969. more

  4970. arguments

  4971. that you

  4972. don't have

  4973. an answer

  4974. for

  4975. so

  4976. my

  4977. question

  4978. is

  4979. how can

  4980. you spot

  4981. good

  4982. apologetics

  4983. versus bad

  4984. apologetics

  4985. that is a

  4986. great question

  4987. I think

  4988. the

  4989. usefulness

  4990. of

  4991. apologetics

  4992. is primarily

  4993. in its

  4994. philosophical

  4995. training

  4996. many

  4997. many

  4998. apologists

  4999. will spend

  5000. the majority

  5001. of their time

  5002. teaching you

  5003. basic

  5004. philosophy

  5005. to understand

  5006. where

  5007. for instance

  5008. fallacies

  5009. are coming

  5010. from

  5011. where

  5012. yeah

  5013. so basically

  5014. so for instance

  5015. when I was

  5016. talking about

  5017. earlier

  5018. how scientific

  5019. materialism

  5020. or scientism

  5021. is a self

  5022. refuting

  5023. argument

  5024. that is

  5025. where

  5026. apologetics

  5027. is useful

  5028. right

  5029. where you

  5030. can see

  5031. common

  5032. objections

  5033. common

  5034. arguments

  5035. that are

  5036. really weak

  5037. right

  5038. now when it

  5039. comes to

  5040. specific

  5041. arguments

  5042. I'm not

  5043. necessarily

  5044. sure I

  5045. would call

  5046. a scientific

  5047. argument about

  5048. the

  5049. nature of a

  5050. giraffe's neck

  5051. as apologetics

  5052. necessarily

  5053. right

  5054. because

  5055. what apologetics

  5056. is is the

  5057. defense of the

  5058. faith

  5059. and if

  5060. you

  5061. marry

  5062. the

  5063. idea

  5064. that you

  5065. need to

  5066. be able

  5067. to explain

  5068. why evolution

  5069. is impossible

  5070. for your

  5071. faith to be

  5072. real

  5073. is really

  5074. shaky

  5075. ground

  5076. right

  5077. that led

  5078. to a lot

  5079. of

  5080. deconstruction

  5081. among my

  5082. friends

  5083. and even

  5084. a period

  5085. of questioning

  5086. for myself

  5087. it's like

  5088. we make

  5089. all these

  5090. absolute

  5091. claims about

  5092. our faith

  5093. and worldview

  5094. that are all

  5095. dominoes

  5096. that hinge

  5097. on each

  5098. other

  5099. and so

  5100. you take

  5101. one out

  5102. and everything

  5103. falls to

  5104. pieces

  5105. yeah I

  5106. think the

  5107. benefit

  5108. what I

  5109. would say

  5110. if I

  5111. was

  5112. counseling

  5113. somebody

  5114. in this

  5115. position

  5116. which really

  5117. you don't

  5118. want me

  5119. as a

  5120. counselor

  5121. don't ask

  5122. me to be

  5123. your

  5124. counselor

  5125. but

  5126. if I

  5127. was in

  5128. this

  5129. position

  5130. I

  5131. would

  5132. say

  5133. listen

  5134. to a

  5135. diverse

  5136. view

  5137. of

  5138. apologetics

  5139. because

  5140. you're

  5141. going to

  5142. find

  5143. orthodox

  5144. Christians

  5145. in apologetics

  5146. who

  5147. disagree

  5148. with the

  5149. giraffe

  5150. argument

  5151. right

  5152. so I

  5153. would say

  5154. it's not

  5155. so much

  5156. a problem

  5157. with apologetics

  5158. as a

  5159. field

  5160. as it

  5161. is a

  5162. problem

  5163. with

  5164. creating

  5165. a bubble

  5166. for yourself

  5167. whether that

  5168. be a

  5169. young earth

  5170. bubble

  5171. or an

  5172. old earth

  5173. bubble

  5174. or any

  5175. other

  5176. bubble

  5177. because I

  5178. think you'll

  5179. find that

  5180. once you

  5181. puncture that

  5182. and you

  5183. go into

  5184. anybody

  5185. else's

  5186. bubble

  5187. you're

  5188. going to

  5189. find that

  5190. people are

  5191. a lot

  5192. more reasonable

  5193. than you

  5194. thought they

  5195. were

  5196. right

  5197. and you

  5198. can't

  5199. caricature

  5200. their

  5201. arguments

  5202. anymore

  5203. and especially

  5204. within the

  5205. Christian

  5206. community

  5207. where again

  5208. we want to

  5209. have helpful

  5210. discussions

  5211. without rancor

  5212. we want to

  5213. be able to

  5214. understand where

  5215. our fellow

  5216. Christians are

  5217. coming from

  5218. in their

  5219. world view

  5220. and so

  5221. having a

  5222. diverse view

  5223. so for

  5224. instance

  5225. you know

  5226. I was

  5227. exposed to

  5228. young earth

  5229. apologetics

  5230. old earth

  5231. theistic

  5232. less theistic

  5233. evolutionists

  5234. but a little

  5235. bit of that

  5236. I mean so I

  5237. had a variety

  5238. of views

  5239. where I

  5240. could

  5241. you sort

  5242. of get a

  5243. big picture

  5244. over time

  5245. seeing

  5246. okay here's

  5247. a strength

  5248. here's a

  5249. weakness

  5250. and how

  5251. can I

  5252. best

  5253. balance all

  5254. of these

  5255. different views

  5256. like where

  5257. would I

  5258. really feel

  5259. confident

  5260. arguing

  5261. so for

  5262. instance

  5263. you know

  5264. I would

  5265. feel very

  5266. confident

  5267. arguing for

  5268. the cosmological

  5269. argument

  5270. right

  5271. you know

  5272. the Kalam

  5273. cosmological

  5274. argument

  5275. I think

  5276. is very

  5277. strong

  5278. I know

  5279. that there

  5280. are

  5281. critiques

  5282. of it

  5283. but I

  5284. find the

  5285. critiques

  5286. to be

  5287. pretty

  5288. weak

  5289. and they

  5290. seem

  5291. very

  5292. ad hoc

  5293. is what I'm

  5294. saying

  5295. so there

  5296. are really

  5297. strong

  5298. arguments

  5299. that you

  5300. can make

  5301. and then

  5302. there are

  5303. arguments

  5304. that you

  5305. hold

  5306. tentatively

  5307. right

  5308. and then

  5309. you say

  5310. you know

  5311. so I guess

  5312. when it

  5313. comes down

  5314. to it

  5315. build your

  5316. foundation

  5317. with the

  5318. strong

  5319. stuff

  5320. don't build

  5321. your foundation

  5322. with the

  5323. weak

  5324. stuff

  5325. and then

  5326. what the

  5327. process of

  5328. growing and

  5329. learning wisdom

  5330. is being able

  5331. to differentiate

  5332. the strong

  5333. and weak

  5334. you know

  5335. yeah

  5336. Amos

  5337. last question

  5338. lay it on me

  5339. I wanted to

  5340. jump off of that

  5341. to mention

  5342. something

  5343. that I was

  5344. thinking during

  5345. an earlier slide

  5346. which was

  5347. Galileo

  5348. and the church

  5349. took a very

  5350. strong stance

  5351. against

  5352. the sun

  5353. being the

  5354. center of

  5355. the solar

  5356. system

  5357. and it

  5358. seemed to me

  5359. like

  5360. I'm no

  5361. historian

  5362. I don't know

  5363. any of this

  5364. stuff

  5365. but it

  5366. certainly

  5367. seemed to

  5368. me like

  5369. the scientific

  5370. field reacted

  5371. pretty strongly

  5372. to that

  5373. position

  5374. such that

  5375. once

  5376. the church

  5377. was

  5378. demonstrated

  5379. to be

  5380. wrong

  5381. about it

  5382. then at

  5383. that point

  5384. it kind

  5385. of opened

  5386. the flood

  5387. gate

  5388. to

  5389. well look

  5390. the church

  5391. can make

  5392. really strong

  5393. arguments

  5394. and off

  5395. of nothing

  5396. yeah

  5397. I think

  5398. that's kind

  5399. of like

  5400. your apologetics

  5401. thing

  5402. like be

  5403. careful

  5404. what arguments

  5405. you make

  5406. and say

  5407. and stand

  5408. on them

  5409. strongly

  5410. because

  5411. if you're

  5412. overstating

  5413. yourself

  5414. then

  5415. if you're

  5416. overstating

  5417. yourself

  5418. then that's

  5419. a big

  5420. problem

  5421. if you're

  5422. wrong

  5423. exactly

  5424. I think

  5425. it comes

  5426. down to

  5427. our

  5428. Christian

  5429. witness

  5430. right

  5431. but

  5432. I would

  5433. say

  5434. we all

  5435. have

  5436. blind

  5437. spots

  5438. and what

  5439. you think

  5440. is a

  5441. strong

  5442. argument

  5443. or a

  5444. weak

  5445. argument

  5446. is going

  5447. to be

  5448. different

  5449. from

  5450. another

  5451. person

  5452. who's

  5453. looking

  5454. at it

  5455. a

  5456. different

  5457. way

  5458. and I

  5459. think

  5460. what the

  5461. benefit

  5462. of

  5463. cordial

  5464. discussion

  5465. and

  5466. brotherly

  5467. pushback

  5468. on your

  5469. arguments

  5470. and just

  5471. general

  5472. intellectual

  5473. training

  5474. is so

  5475. that we

  5476. can

  5477. sharpen

  5478. each

  5479. other

  5480. iron

  5481. sharpens

  5482. iron

  5483. and knowing

  5484. that

  5485. every time

  5486. I hear a

  5487. good

  5488. criticism

  5489. of one

  5490. of the

  5491. arguments

  5492. I like

  5493. a little

  5494. part of

  5495. me is

  5496. like

  5497. oh no

  5498. but

  5499. growing up

  5500. you've got

  5501. to learn

  5502. how to

  5503. deal with

  5504. those

  5505. little

  5506. oh no's

  5507. and then

  5508. remind

  5509. yourself

  5510. what's

  5511. really the

  5512. foundation

  5513. of what

  5514. I believe

  5515. and can

  5516. I let

  5517. this go

  5518. is this

  5519. criticism

  5520. even really

  5521. very good

  5522. etc

  5523. so yeah

  5524. I think

  5525. one of the

  5526. last thing

  5527. I'll say

  5528. is one

  5529. of the

  5530. problems

  5531. with the

  5532. Galileo

  5533. incident

  5534. is

  5535. you know

  5536. you have

  5537. the Catholic

  5538. churches

  5539. and ecclesiology

  5540. believes in

  5541. the authority

  5542. of tradition

  5543. and that

  5544. creates a lot

  5545. of issues

  5546. when you have

  5547. a church

  5548. that's 2,000

  5549. years old

  5550. right

  5551. so

  5552. revisions

  5553. of ideas

  5554. are very

  5555. difficult

  5556. in that

  5557. situation

  5558. and it's

  5559. different in

  5560. the Protestant

  5561. world

  5562. right

  5563. where we

  5564. have

  5565. sola scriptura

  5566. so we're

  5567. pretty open

  5568. about

  5569. non-scriptural

  5570. things in

  5571. general

  5572. right

  5573. all right

  5574. well thank you

  5575. guys

  5576. thanks for

  5577. coming

  5578. next week

  5579. hermeneutics

  5580. everybody's

  5581. favorite topic

  5582. not

  5583. you

  5584. you

  5585. you

  5586. you

  5587. you

  5588. you

  5589. you

  5590. you
