  1. Merry Christmas, church family. It's good to see you all this morning.

  2. Our sermon text is from Luke chapter 2, verses 21 through 40.

    Luke 2:21–40

  3. That's page 805 in the Pew Bible.

  4. Let me encourage you to turn there. We'll have it on the screens when I read it the first time,

  5. but it'll be good to have it open in front of you as we kind of walk through the text today.

  6. As we come to God's Word, let me pray for us.

  7. Lord Jesus, before your resurrection and ascension, you promised your apostles that you would send your Spirit

  8. to bring everything that you had taught them to mind and to guide them into all truth.

  9. Lord, we thank you for the work of your apostles preserving for us your Word,

  10. and we thank you that your Spirit is still at work today,

  11. bringing light and knowledge and love and peace to our hearts as we come to you through the means of your Word.

  12. So we pray now, Holy Father, that as we come to you this morning,

  13. you would open our eyes and ears to hear what your Spirit is saying to us through your Word.

  14. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  15. All right, Luke chapter 2, verses 21 through—I'm going to read through 38 this morning.

    Luke 2:21

  16. Luke writes this. He says,

  17. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon,

  18. And this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel,

  19. and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

  20. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

  21. And he came in the Spirit into the temple,

  22. and when the parents had brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law,

  23. he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

  24. Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your Word.

  25. For my eyes have seen your salvation, that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples

  26. a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.

  27. And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.

  28. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

  29. Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel,

  30. and for a sign that is opposed,

  31. and a sword will pierce through your own soul also,

  32. so that the thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.

  33. And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher.

  34. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,

  35. and then as a widow until she was 84.

  36. She did not depart from the temple worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.

  37. And coming up at that very hour, she began to give thanks to God

  38. and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

  39. Well, waiting can be hard, can't it?

  40. We've just spent a whole month waiting for Christmas,

  41. waiting to open presents, waiting for school to go on break,

  42. waiting for vacation from work.

  43. Waiting can be pretty hard.

  44. But what about when the waiting is over?

  45. What about when the thing you've been waiting for finally arrives?

  46. Well, that can be hard too.

  47. You spend so much time waiting,

  48. sometimes we don't know exactly how to live once the waiting's over.

  49. How's life supposed to change?

  50. What are we supposed to do now?

  51. Now, our passage shows us four people who've spent a long time waiting.

  52. First, there's Mary and Joseph.

  53. They've been waiting nine months for their baby to be born.

  54. Then Simeon, waiting for the consolation of Israel,

  55. but also waiting for the fulfillment of God's particular promise to him

  56. that he would see the Lord's Christ before he saw death.

  57. Now, we don't know how long Simeon had been waiting,

  58. but presumably for many years.

  59. And then we have Anna, 84 years old, a prophetess,

  60. living a life of prayer and fasting and worship in the temple,

  61. waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

  62. Waiting along with all the other faithful Israelites mentioned in verse 38.

  63. Lots of waiting.

  64. But then, at last, their waiting's over.

  65. The thing that they've been waiting for has finally arrived.

  66. And how do they respond?

  67. You know, this time of year, the Christmas season for Christians

  68. is about more than waiting for gifts and waiting for vacations, right?

  69. It's about reliving again that wait and the longing,

  70. reliving again that longing for Christ to come.

  71. It's about putting ourselves back into this long story of God,

  72. longing for our Redeemer.

  73. And then, as we relive this story, Christmas arrives,

  74. and the angels sing, and the incarnation happens,

  75. and we celebrate with joy all over again,

  76. and we light candles on Christmas Eve, and it's a lot of fun.

  77. But what next?

  78. The waiting's over.

  79. Now what?

  80. How do we live the day after Christmas?

  81. You know, there's an important spiritual principle here, actually.

  82. Sometimes our spiritual life grows stagnant

  83. because we don't know what's next.

  84. We hear the good news about Jesus.

  85. We see our need for a Savior.

  86. We place our trust in Him.

  87. We experience His love.

  88. But then what?

  89. Isn't it true that becoming a Christian is often like realizing

  90. that you've been waiting for something your whole life,

  91. and you might not even have realized exactly what it is,

  92. and then in the person of Jesus, at last,

  93. you feel like you've found it.

  94. Or rather, He's found you.

  95. And you realize that He's the one you've been waiting for.

  96. But what next?

  97. The waiting's over.

  98. Now what?

  99. But this doesn't just apply to those of us who are new in the faith.

  100. It actually applies kind of across the board for us.

  101. If you've been following Jesus for some time,

  102. you know that your spiritual life can get a little stagnant sometimes.

  103. It can sort of feel like that Christmas gift you opened,

  104. but then a few years later,

  105. it just sort of sits there on the shelf,

  106. not really doing anything.

  107. The waiting's over.

  108. Now what?

  109. Right?

  110. Well, this is where our passage comes to speak to us.

  111. How do we live the day after Christmas?

  112. How do we live when the waiting's over?

  113. When we're new to the faith?

  114. Or maybe stagnant in the faith?

  115. Well, each of the characters in our text

  116. show us something about how to live

  117. now that Jesus has arrived in our lives.

  118. So let's look first at Mary and Joseph.

  119. And what we see through their example is,

  120. is now that the waiting's over,

  121. now that Christ has come into our lives,

  122. we delight to obey his word.

  123. Look again at verses 21 through 24.

  124. At the end of eight days,

  125. when he was circumcised,

  126. he was called Jesus,

  127. the name given by the angel

  128. before he was conceived in the womb.

  129. And when the time came for their purification,

  130. according to the law of Moses,

  131. they brought him up to Jerusalem

  132. to present him to the Lord,

  133. as it is written in the law of the Lord.

  134. Every male who first opens the womb

  135. shall be called holy to the Lord

  136. and to offer a sacrifice

  137. according to what is said in the law of the Lord,

  138. a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons.

  139. So we see Mary and Joseph here

  140. obeying God's word.

  141. Now there are three ways in particular

  142. that Mary and Joseph obey God's law

  143. in this short passage.

  144. First, as Genesis 17 says,

  145. they circumcised Jesus on the eighth day.

  146. And then as Exodus 13 says,

  147. they are presenting Jesus,

  148. their firstborn son to the Lord.

  149. And finally, as Leviticus 12 says,

  150. they're coming to offer appropriate sacrifices

  151. for ceremonial purification after childbirth.

  152. Now consider all that's just happened

  153. to this young couple.

  154. An angel has appeared to both of them

  155. on separate occasions in Luke 1 and Matthew 1,

  156. telling them that their child

  157. was going to be the Messiah

  158. and to be born to Mary as a virgin.

  159. Then after giving birth in a stable,

  160. a group of shepherds burst in

  161. with news about angels singing Gloria,

  162. excited to meet the newborn king,

  163. that's all pretty wild stuff, right?

  164. Those are the sort of experiences

  165. you could write about

  166. and get a book contract in no time.

  167. But notice how Mary and Joseph

  168. respond to the fact

  169. that God has fulfilled his promise.

  170. Notice how they respond

  171. to the great news

  172. that their son

  173. is being heralded as the Messiah.

  174. After being such radical recipients

  175. of God's grace and favor,

  176. how do they respond?

  177. They obey God's word.

  178. God's law for them

  179. isn't some arbitrary code.

  180. It isn't some kind of cosmic killjoy.

  181. No, this is the word

  182. of their awesome, faithful, loving God,

  183. and they delight to keep it.

  184. It's the same for us, you know.

  185. When Christ comes to us,

  186. when we receive him,

  187. when our waiting is over,

  188. and we find in him

  189. all that we've been longing for,

  190. suddenly,

  191. God's commands

  192. aren't some burdensome,

  193. tiresome thing.

  194. No, God's commands

  195. are the life-giving paths

  196. of our loving God.

  197. Maybe you've had the experience

  198. of opening up a Lego set

  199. on Christmas.

  200. Has anyone here

  201. opened up a Lego set

  202. on Christmas?

  203. Okay.

  204. Some of you have.

  205. Imagine it with me.

  206. You open up the package,

  207. tiny pieces fall out,

  208. they scatter across the table,

  209. some of them sometimes

  210. are in different bags,

  211. and the thing looks nothing

  212. like it looks

  213. on the front of the box, right?

  214. But then,

  215. as the pieces are all over the table

  216. and you're looking at the picture,

  217. out of the box drops,

  218. the instructions.

  219. And then,

  220. step by step,

  221. you see how the pieces

  222. go together,

  223. how it all fits

  224. to make this cool-looking thing

  225. on the front of the box.

  226. You know,

  227. when we become a Christian,

  228. it's a little like that.

  229. You open the gift,

  230. and on the front of the box

  231. is this glorious picture.

  232. And the picture on the front

  233. of the box is you

  234. in all the glory

  235. of Christ's likeness.

  236. That's the goal.

  237. Your life,

  238. radiant with the glory

  239. of Christ in you.

  240. And then you open the box,

  241. and all the pieces fall out.

  242. In other words,

  243. your Christian life starts,

  244. and you realize

  245. that you've got

  246. a lot of broken pieces,

  247. and the pieces

  248. don't seem to fit,

  249. and there are some pieces

  250. you just don't know

  251. what to do with.

  252. And you can get

  253. a little discouraged.

  254. You can get

  255. a little frustrated,

  256. and you can be tempted

  257. to give up.

  258. But then out falls

  259. the instruction manual.

  260. And in the pages

  261. of God's word,

  262. we see the means

  263. whereby God,

  264. through his spirit,

  265. is going to slowly

  266. start putting the pieces

  267. where they're meant to go.

  268. He'll slowly start

  269. building you

  270. into the image

  271. of his son

  272. through the means

  273. of his word.

  274. Of course,

  275. now that Christ has come,

  276. we no longer live

  277. under the particular

  278. customs of the Mosaic law.

  279. Things like circumcision,

  280. the presentation

  281. of the firstborn,

  282. ritual sacrifices

  283. after childbirth.

  284. These ceremonies

  285. are no longer binding

  286. now that the Messiah

  287. has come.

  288. But as you read

  289. the New Testament,

  290. you see that God

  291. has continued

  292. to give his church

  293. the guidance

  294. and instruction

  295. we need

  296. to become like Jesus

  297. in this era

  298. of the new covenant.

  299. He's shown us

  300. practically

  301. how to love him

  302. with all our heart,

  303. soul, mind, and strength.

  304. He's shown us

  305. practically how to love

  306. our neighbor as ourself.

  307. But of course,

  308. some of these instructions

  309. seem a little odd

  310. at first, don't they?

  311. Even if we're not called

  312. to go up to Jerusalem

  313. and sacrifice

  314. after we have a baby,

  315. still,

  316. some of the instructions

  317. of the New Testament

  318. strike us

  319. kind of culturally

  320. against the grain

  321. at times, don't they?

  322. Some seem odd.

  323. Some seem challenging.

  324. Sometimes God's instruction

  325. through his word

  326. can seem impossible.

  327. But you know,

  328. if you look again

  329. at our passage here

  330. in Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  331. what you see

  332. isn't just

  333. a young couple

  334. obeying God's word.

  335. What you also see here

  336. is your Savior

  337. coming under the law

  338. for you

  339. in his circumcision,

  340. in his presentation

  341. at the temple,

  342. the Lord of the universe

  343. is taking the law

  344. upon himself

  345. and he will obey it

  346. and he will keep it

  347. to the very end.

  348. Jesus here truly

  349. is God with us.

  350. So when the commandments

  351. of God seem burdensome

  352. or seem impossible

  353. to us,

  354. remember

  355. that your Savior

  356. has walked this road

  357. for you

  358. and he will continue

  359. to walk this road

  360. with you.

  361. In his obedience,

  362. he accomplished,

  363. yes,

  364. a perfect righteousness

  365. for you,

  366. but now through his spirit

  367. he's working out

  368. this righteousness

  369. in you.

  370. In other words,

  371. he's justified you

  372. through his obedience

  373. to the law

  374. and he will go on

  375. and sanctify you as well.

  376. So this is part of

  377. what it means to live

  378. when the waiting's over.

  379. We don't just sort of

  380. twiddle our thumbs

  381. and wonder what's next.

  382. We have the very word

  383. of God directing us,

  384. showing us how to become

  385. the sort of people

  386. he created us

  387. and redeemed us to be.

  388. We get to put the pieces

  389. of our life together

  390. according to the plan

  391. of our creator

  392. and our redeemer

  393. and we get to become

  394. more and more

  395. like Jesus.

  396. But that's not all.

  397. Because after Mary and Joseph

  398. enter the temple,

  399. they're met by another person

  400. who's been waiting

  401. for the Christ

  402. and he's been waiting

  403. longer than nine months.

  404. Simeon's been waiting,

  405. it would seem,

  406. for many years.

  407. And what we see in Simeon

  408. is that now that

  409. the waiting is over,

  410. now that Christ

  411. has come into our lives,

  412. we receive his peace.

  413. We receive his peace.

  414. Look with me again

  415. at verses 25 through 32.

  416. Now there was a man

  417. in Jerusalem

  418. whose name was Simeon

  419. and this man

  420. was righteous and devout

  421. waiting for the

  422. consolation of Israel

  423. and the Holy Spirit

  424. was upon him

  425. and it had been revealed

  426. to him by the Holy Spirit

  427. that he would not see death

  428. before he had seen

  429. the Lord's Christ.

  430. And he came in the Spirit

  431. into the temple

  432. and when his parents

  433. brought in the child Jesus

  434. to do for him

  435. according to the custom

  436. of the law,

  437. he took him up in his arms

  438. and blessed God

  439. and said,

  440. Lord,

  441. now you are letting

  442. your servant depart

  443. in peace

  444. according to your word.

  445. For my eyes have seen

  446. your salvation

  447. that you have prepared

  448. in the presence

  449. of all peoples

  450. a light for revelation

  451. to the Gentiles

  452. and for glory

  453. to your people Israel.

  454. Now Simeon's blessing

  455. here in verses 29

  456. through 32

  457. is often called

  458. the nunc dimittis

  459. which is just a Latin

  460. translation of verse 29.

  461. Now you are dismissing.

  462. Now you are letting

  463. your servant depart

  464. or dismissed

  465. in peace.

  466. Notice how this peace

  467. for Simeon

  468. is both personal

  469. and global.

  470. It's personal

  471. and global for Simeon.

  472. On the personal level,

  473. Simeon here is talking

  474. about his own death.

  475. The Lord had promised him

  476. through the spirit

  477. that he would see

  478. the Lord's Christ

  479. before he died.

  480. And now

  481. that he has seen Jesus,

  482. he's seen the Christ,

  483. he knows

  484. that he can depart

  485. from this life.

  486. Now the fact

  487. that Simeon

  488. is talking about

  489. his departure,

  490. his death,

  491. that's what makes us think

  492. that Simeon

  493. is most likely

  494. in his later years,

  495. that he's an old man

  496. in the temple.

  497. But notice,

  498. now that he's held

  499. Christ in his arms

  500. and seen Christ

  501. with his own eyes,

  502. he's ready to meet

  503. the end of his life

  504. with what?

  505. With peace.

  506. And of course,

  507. that isn't just true

  508. of Simeon, is it?

  509. It's true of everyone

  510. who has seen

  511. in Jesus

  512. the fullness

  513. of God's salvation.

  514. Did you notice?

  515. Simeon says

  516. of the child,

  517. my eyes

  518. have seen

  519. your salvation.

  520. Simeon is saying

  521. that all of God's

  522. saving purposes

  523. are found

  524. in Christ.

  525. There's no salvation

  526. apart from him.

  527. He's the storehouse

  528. where all the rich

  529. blessings are found.

  530. And that means

  531. that if you have Christ,

  532. then you have it all.

  533. There's nothing

  534. God has withheld

  535. from you

  536. if you have his son.

  537. And that means

  538. we can face anything,

  539. even death,

  540. like Simeon,

  541. with peace.

  542. Imagine what it

  543. would look like

  544. to live your life

  545. without the fear

  546. of death.

  547. Some of us

  548. are afraid of death

  549. because we're not sure

  550. what might happen

  551. to us after we die.

  552. But if you're united

  553. to Christ

  554. through faith,

  555. then all of your sins

  556. are forgiven

  557. and God promises you

  558. eternal life

  559. in his own presence.

  560. So if you belong

  561. to Christ,

  562. you need not fear

  563. what happens

  564. after you die.

  565. But some of us

  566. are afraid of death

  567. because we're afraid

  568. of what we might

  569. not have accomplished.

  570. We're afraid

  571. we might not

  572. have accomplished

  573. all that we want

  574. to accomplish

  575. before we die.

  576. In other words,

  577. we're sort of afraid

  578. of death coming

  579. because we're afraid

  580. that maybe we won't

  581. have experienced

  582. everything we want

  583. to experience

  584. before death comes.

  585. So we're afraid

  586. of the end to come.

  587. Maybe we won't

  588. accomplish everything

  589. we want to accomplish.

  590. And so the prospect

  591. of death simply

  592. as the end

  593. of this life

  594. fills us with dread.

  595. And it casts

  596. a shadow over our life,

  597. a shadow of anxiety

  598. or pressure

  599. or fear

  600. or regret.

  601. But for the Christian,

  602. this need not

  603. be the case.

  604. We can view

  605. the prospect

  606. of death

  607. not with anxiety

  608. or fears

  609. of regret,

  610. regret,

  611. but with peace.

  612. Why?

  613. Because we know

  614. on the one hand

  615. that it's our sovereign God

  616. who numbers our days

  617. and like Simeon,

  618. we can trust

  619. God's timing.

  620. Perhaps

  621. we don't accomplish

  622. all we hope to

  623. in this life,

  624. but we still live

  625. in the confidence

  626. that God is doing

  627. his good work

  628. in us and through us.

  629. But you know,

  630. on the other hand,

  631. we also serve

  632. a risen Savior

  633. a risen Savior

  634. who promises

  635. a new creation.

  636. And what this means

  637. is that this life

  638. isn't the end,

  639. but just the beginning.

  640. Yes, you know,

  641. there are notes

  642. that are being played

  643. in this life

  644. full of beauty

  645. and full of power

  646. and yes,

  647. it's very true

  648. that we don't want

  649. the music of this life

  650. to end, do we?

  651. And we think about

  652. all the great things

  653. and desires that we have

  654. and we don't want

  655. that music to stop.

  656. But if we serve

  657. a risen Savior,

  658. then these notes

  659. that we hear

  660. in this life

  661. are just a prelude

  662. to a greater symphony

  663. to come

  664. in the new creation.

  665. And so we can face

  666. death now,

  667. not with despair

  668. or with regret

  669. of things we may not

  670. have done

  671. or may not have experienced,

  672. but we can face it

  673. with peace

  674. because we know

  675. that God has

  676. much better in store.

  677. And you know,

  678. Simeon shows us

  679. that this is not

  680. just a personal peace

  681. that we can experience

  682. in our own lives,

  683. but it's also

  684. a global peace.

  685. It's a peace available

  686. to everyone

  687. without distinction.

  688. In verses 31 and 32,

  689. the salvation of Christ

  690. is set before all peoples.

  691. He's a light

  692. for both Gentiles

  693. and Jews.

  694. For Jews,

  695. Christ is their glory.

  696. He's the one

  697. they've been waiting for,

  698. the one who sums up

  699. their long history

  700. with God

  701. and brings it

  702. to its climax.

  703. For Israel,

  704. Jesus is their glory.

  705. But for the Gentiles,

  706. Christ is light too.

  707. He's their revelation.

  708. Christ is the unveiling

  709. of the one

  710. they were looking for

  711. when they didn't

  712. even know it.

  713. So this peace

  714. isn't something

  715. that greedily belongs

  716. only to a select few.

  717. No, it's freely

  718. offered to all.

  719. It's not just personal.

  720. It's global.

  721. It's not just for Simeon.

  722. It's for you.

  723. But Simeon goes on

  724. to say that it's not

  725. just personal and global.

  726. This peace is costly

  727. as well.

  728. Look again at verses

  729. 33 through 35.

  730. And Jesus' father

  731. and mother marveled

  732. at what was said

  733. about him.

  734. And Simeon blessed them

  735. and said to Mary,

  736. his mother,

  737. Behold,

  738. this child is appointed

  739. for the fall and rising

  740. of many in Israel

  741. and for a sign

  742. that is opposed

  743. and a sword will pierce

  744. through your own soul

  745. also so that thoughts

  746. from many hearts

  747. may be revealed.

  748. Now, Simeon here

  749. is warning

  750. these young parents

  751. that the road ahead

  752. for this child of theirs

  753. will not be an easy one.

  754. You know,

  755. you might think

  756. up until this point

  757. in the birth narrative

  758. that everything's going to be

  759. one sort of

  760. triumphant parade

  761. to glory.

  762. The king is here.

  763. The angels are singing.

  764. Old men and women

  765. are dancing.

  766. And yet,

  767. the road

  768. will not be an easy one

  769. for this child.

  770. Simeon says

  771. he's going to be

  772. sort of like a litmus test.

  773. Some will encounter Jesus

  774. and they will fall.

  775. They will not

  776. see in him

  777. God's salvation,

  778. but in pride

  779. they will reject him.

  780. Others will encounter Jesus

  781. and they'll rise.

  782. They'll behold him

  783. with the eyes of faith

  784. and in humility

  785. call out to him

  786. for rescue

  787. and he will receive them

  788. and raise them up.

  789. In other words,

  790. Christ,

  791. as Simeon says

  792. at the end

  793. of verse 35,

  794. he's going to expose

  795. the innermost thoughts

  796. of the heart.

  797. And he still does that today.

  798. Christ poses a question

  799. to each one of us

  800. and there's no neutral ground.

  801. Will we receive him

  802. as king,

  803. as Lord,

  804. or will we reject him?

  805. Will we humble ourselves

  806. before him?

  807. Or will we turn away

  808. in pride

  809. and live for some other Lord

  810. of our own choosing?

  811. There's no getting around

  812. this decision.

  813. Each of us must face

  814. the question of whether

  815. we will bow to Jesus

  816. as Lord.

  817. But these verses

  818. don't just speak

  819. of the decision

  820. that Christ poses

  821. to each of us.

  822. It also speaks

  823. of the decision

  824. Christ made

  825. for each of us.

  826. We see here

  827. that when Christ came,

  828. he humbled himself.

  829. He submitted himself

  830. willingly

  831. to the rejection

  832. of his own people.

  833. He was willingly opposed,

  834. as verse 34 says.

  835. And then Simeon speaks

  836. of a metaphorical sword

  837. that will pierce

  838. Mary's own soul.

  839. And most readers

  840. of Luke's gospel

  841. have taken this piercing

  842. as a reference

  843. to Mary's sorrow.

  844. Where?

  845. At the cross.

  846. Mary would see

  847. her own son

  848. rejected and crucified.

  849. And sorrow

  850. would stab her heart

  851. like a sword.

  852. And so we see

  853. in this text

  854. not just

  855. an old man,

  856. Simeon,

  857. living in the peace

  858. of Christ.

  859. We also see

  860. our Savior

  861. and the costly price

  862. he would pay

  863. to win us

  864. that peace.

  865. You see,

  866. it's only because

  867. our Savior was rejected

  868. that we can be accepted.

  869. It's only because

  870. he was opposed

  871. that we can be received.

  872. Why?

  873. Because our sins

  874. deserve God's rejection.

  875. But on the cross,

  876. Christ is rejected

  877. in the place

  878. of our sins.

  879. That's why peace

  880. can be ours

  881. and is offered

  882. to everyone.

  883. Because the debt

  884. of sin

  885. has been paid

  886. in full

  887. through his sin-bearing death.

  888. Now,

  889. if we reject him,

  890. we will fall,

  891. as Simeon says,

  892. under the weight

  893. of our own sin.

  894. But if we receive him,

  895. we will rise,

  896. having been released

  897. from the burden of sin

  898. through his death

  899. on our behalf.

  900. And for those

  901. who do humble themselves

  902. and receive

  903. this gift in Christ,

  904. it is a peace

  905. that not even death

  906. itself can take away.

  907. Why?

  908. Because our Savior

  909. has died for us.

  910. We can live in peace

  911. even in the face of death.

  912. So now that the waiting

  913. is over,

  914. now that Christ

  915. has come into our lives,

  916. we receive

  917. and live in peace

  918. with courage

  919. and freedom

  920. from the fear of death

  921. and from the guilt of sin.

  922. But there's one more figure

  923. Luke wants us to see.

  924. One last way

  925. that Luke here

  926. charts out for us,

  927. sketches out for us

  928. how to live.

  929. And that is Anna

  930. in verses 36 through 38.

  931. And what we see in Anna

  932. is that now

  933. that the waiting is over,

  934. now that Christ

  935. has come into our lives,

  936. we proclaim his kingdom.

  937. We obey his word,

  938. we live in peace

  939. and we proclaim his kingdom.

  940. Look again

  941. at verses 36 through 38.

  942. And there was a prophetess,

  943. Anna,

  944. the daughter of Phanuel

  945. of the tribe of Asher.

  946. She was advanced in years,

  947. having lived with her husband

  948. seven years

  949. from when she was a virgin

  950. and then as a widow

  951. until she was 84.

  952. She did not depart

  953. from the temple,

  954. worshiping with fasting

  955. and prayer night and day.

  956. And coming up

  957. at that very hour,

  958. she began to give thanks to God

  959. and to speak of him

  960. to all who were waiting

  961. for the redemption of Jerusalem.

  962. Now Anna is sort of

  963. this wonderful contrast

  964. to Simeon,

  965. isn't she?

  966. Simeon,

  967. you know,

  968. after he meets Jesus,

  969. he's like ready to retire,

  970. right?

  971. He's like,

  972. Lord,

  973. okay,

  974. you fulfilled your promise to me,

  975. I'm good,

  976. let me go.

  977. But,

  978. we get the sense

  979. that Anna is just getting started.

  980. If Simeon shows us

  981. the serenity,

  982. the peace that Christ brings,

  983. Anna shows us the vitality,

  984. the energy that Christ brings.

  985. She might be 84 years old,

  986. but now that Christ has come,

  987. she can't help but proclaim

  988. the arrival of her king

  989. and the restoration of Jerusalem

  990. and the arrival of God's kingdom.

  991. So friends,

  992. let this be an encouragement to you.

  993. If you feel

  994. that you are reaching

  995. your later years,

  996. God still has a plan for you

  997. to use you

  998. to advance his kingdom.

  999. And that's true of all of us.

1000. Just think of all the characters

1001. we met in Luke 1 and 2.

  1002. Young and old,

1003. some who work in the temple,

1004. some who work in the fields,

  1005. some who are named,

  1006. some who are unnamed,

  1007. but all together,

1008. God is gathering his church

  1009. around Jesus' son,

  1010. the Messiah,

  1011. our Lord,

  1012. and in Anna,

1013. we see this first lighting

  1014. of the flame

1015. that will continue to burn

1016. through the gospel of Luke

  1017. and then especially

  1018. in Luke's sequel,

  1019. the book of Acts,

  1020. where like Anna,

  1021. the early church

  1022. filled with the Spirit

  1023. will take this news

  1024. of their Redeemer

  1025. and begin telling it

1026. to all who will hear.

1027. A message of good news,

  1028. of great joy

  1029. for all people.

  1030. A message of repentance

1031. and the forgiveness of sins

  1032. for all people.

1033. A message of eternal life

  1034. and freedom

  1035. for all who believe.

  1036. You see,

  1037. Anna understood

  1038. that when the waiting

  1039. was over,

  1040. the real mission

  1041. had just begun.

1042. Now that Christ was here,

1043. the world needed to know.

  1044. The kingdom of God

  1045. had arrived

  1046. and the great renewal

  1047. had begun.

  1048. So for us,

  1049. as the year ends

  1050. and another year begins,

  1051. who will we tell

  1052. this year

  1053. about the good news?

  1054. A co-worker,

  1055. a friend,

  1056. a neighbor?

  1057. Who in your life

  1058. needs to know

  1059. that God has come

  1060. in Christ

1061. to give us His peace

  1062. without charge,

  1063. fully of grace?

1064. let's begin praying for them.

  1065. Let's think about

  1066. how we might

  1067. open up

  1068. spiritual conversations

  1069. with them.

  1070. And friends,

  1071. do all of this

  1072. with a deep sense

  1073. like Anna

  1074. of joy

  1075. and thanksgiving.

1076. God wants to use you

1077. to bring this good news

1078. to those who need it.

  1079. What a wonderful privilege

  1080. to be bearers

  1081. of good news.

  1082. the good news

  1083. that God loves us

  1084. and sent His Son

  1085. to be our peace.

  1086. So the waiting's over,

  1087. friends.

1088. Christ has come at last,

  1089. but the adventure

  1090. has just begun.

  1091. Through His Word,

  1092. He's making us

  1093. more like Jesus.

  1094. Through His peace,

  1095. He's giving us courage

  1096. and freedom

1097. even in the face of death.

  1098. And through His mission,

  1099. He's advancing

  1100. His kingdom

  1101. through us.

  1102. So church,

  1103. may we live

  1104. like Anna

  1105. and Simeon,

  1106. like Joseph

  1107. and Mary,

  1108. who when the wait

  1109. was over

  1110. had their course set

  1111. by the arrival

  1112. of their King.

  1113. Amen?

  1114. Amen.

  1115. Let's pray.

  1116. God,

  1117. we thank You

  1118. for the many pictures

  1119. that You've preserved

  1120. for us

  1121. from this history

  1122. of the earliest days

  1123. of Jesus our Lord.

1124. and how men and women,

  1125. young and old,

  1126. insiders and outsiders,

  1127. were all gathered

  1128. into Your people

1129. and given this great purpose

1130. to live for Your kingdom.

1131. We pray for a fresh pouring out

  1132. of Your Spirit, God,

  1133. upon us

  1134. as this year ends

  1135. and another begins.

  1136. Oh Lord,

  1137. make us like Simeon,

  1138. confident in Your peace.

  1139. Make us like Anna,

  1140. excited and thrilled

  1141. to share the news

  1142. of the One

  1143. who has come

  1144. and is coming again.

  1145. God,

  1146. do all this

  1147. for the glory

  1148. of Your great name

  1149. and the upbuilding

  1150. of Your church,

  1151. we pray.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. Amen.

  1154. Amen.

  1155. Thank you.
