  1. It's good to see you this morning.

  2. If you missed Pastor Matt's announcement

  3. at the very start of the service

  4. about the city parking ban,

  5. let me remind you, if you parked on the street,

  6. there's a chance you may get towed.

  7. I'll read the scripture passage really slowly

  8. to give you a chance to go move your car if you need to,

  9. but there's a parking garage right behind us.

  10. You can get to it right off of Autobahn

  11. or off of Orange Street.

  12. So we did park on the street this morning.

  13. We wouldn't want you to get towed,

  14. so just a reminder about that.

  15. But our sermon text this morning

  16. is 1 Peter 1, 13-21.

  17. And I think that's on page 953

  18. in the Pew Bible in front of you.

  19. If you'd like to turn there

  20. and have it open in front of you

  21. throughout the course of our sermon this morning.

  22. 1 Peter 1, verses 13-21.

    1 Peter 1:13–21

  23. All right, let me read this for us.

  24. The Apostle Peter says this.

  25. He says,

  26. Therefore, preparing your minds for action

  27. and being sober-minded,

  28. set your hope fully on the grace

  29. that will be brought to you

  30. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  31. As obedient children,

  32. do not be conformed to the passions

  33. of your former ignorance.

  34. But as he who called you is holy,

  35. you also be holy in all your conduct.

  36. Since it is written,

  37. You shall be holy, for I am holy.

  38. And if you call on him as father

  39. who judges impartially according

  40. to each one's deeds,

  41. conduct yourselves with fear

  42. throughout the time of your exile,

  43. knowing that you were ransomed

  44. from the futile ways

  45. inherited from your forefathers,

  46. not with perishable things,

  47. such as silver or gold,

  48. but with the precious blood of Christ,

  49. like that of a lamb

  50. without blemish or spot.

  51. He was foreknown

  52. before the foundation of the world,

  53. but was made manifest

  54. in the last times

  55. for the sake of you,

  56. who through him

  57. are believers in God,

  58. who raised him from the dead

  59. and gave him glory,

  60. so that your faith and hope

  61. are in God.

  62. Let's pray together.

  63. Father, as we come to these words

  64. from the Apostle Peter

  65. to the first century church,

  66. we thank you that by your spirit

  67. you continue to speak to us

  68. through these apostolic words.

  69. Jesus, thank you for continuing

  70. to shepherd your church

  71. throughout this time.

  72. And we pray that as we meditate

  73. on this passage this morning,

  74. you would do that work

  75. of shepherding and loving

  76. and comforting and guiding

  77. for the sake of your people

  78. and for the sake of your name,

  79. we pray this.

  80. Amen.

  81. So, when we look at the history

  82. of the early church,

  83. we see something pretty amazing,

  84. actually.

  85. As the message

  86. about Jesus' death

  87. and resurrection

  88. went forth

  89. in those first centuries,

  90. it created communities

  91. that were radically distinct

  92. from the surrounding Roman culture.

  93. Something obviously

  94. and apparently knew

  95. was being created.

  96. Larry Hurtado,

  97. who's a historian

  98. of the first few centuries

  99. of the common area

  100. of the church,

  101. he wrote a book recently

  102. called Destroyer of the Gods,

  103. Early Christian Distinctiveness

  104. in the Roman World.

  105. And what he does

  106. in that book

  107. is trace how Christian communities

  108. were really, really different

  109. and really distinct

  110. from the Roman context

  111. in which they lived.

  112. And he traces

  113. a number of different ways

  114. in which the church

  115. was different.

  116. Well, how so?

  117. Well, there was a number of ways.

  118. You know, in a culture

  119. where kind of taking care

  120. of your family

  121. or taking care

  122. of your own tribe

  123. was the priority,

  124. Christians, surprisingly,

  125. cared for the poor

  126. and cared for the marginalized

  127. no matter what their background.

  128. Also, in a culture

  129. where your religion

  130. was basically kind of

  131. a product of your upbringing,

  132. Christianity in distinction

  133. was radically multi-ethnic

  134. and multi-racial.

  135. Anyone could join

  136. this new movement,

  137. this new family

  138. around Jesus.

  139. And in a culture

  140. where honor and shame

  141. led to sort of

  142. long-standing grudges

  143. and rivalries,

  144. Christians,

  145. in distinction from that,

  146. were committed to forgiveness

  147. and non-retaliation.

  148. Many Christians dying

  149. for their faith

  150. in those early years,

  151. yet forgiving

  152. their persecutors.

  153. And there's more.

  154. In a culture

  155. where infanticide

  156. was acceptable

  157. and children were often

  158. sold into slavery,

  159. Christians practiced

  160. this radical hospitality

  161. and this radical commitment

  162. to life,

  163. standing against abortion,

  164. caring for unwanted children,

  165. taking them in.

  166. And in a culture

  167. where sex was seen

  168. kind of as an appetite

  169. that could be fulfilled

  170. in any way

  171. as long as it sort of

  172. upheld the social order,

  173. Christians,

  174. in distinction from that,

  175. held this radically

  176. different view

  177. of sex even,

  178. that it was part

  179. of an exclusive covenant

  180. between a man

  181. and a woman

  182. in a way that pictured

  183. God's union

  184. with his people,

  185. a life-producing union

  186. across fundamental difference.

  187. Okay, now why are we

  188. talking about all this?

  189. Why am I talking about

  190. all the ways in which

  191. Christians were distinct

  192. and different

  193. from their surrounding culture

  194. when it came to things

  195. like race and sex

  196. and class and life

  197. and forgiveness?

  198. Well, this distinction,

  199. this difference,

  200. is what Peter's talking about

  201. in our passage

  202. when he talks about holiness.

  203. holiness.

  204. The central point

  205. of this paragraph

  206. in 1 Peter is verse 15

  207. where he says,

  208. be holy in all your conduct.

  209. Now, I don't know

  210. what comes to mind for you

  211. when you think of the word holy.

  212. Maybe you get a picture

  213. of some sort of

  214. super spiritual,

  215. oddly dressed guru

  216. who's very holy.

  217. Or maybe you think

  218. of some kind of

  219. overly meticulous,

  220. self-righteous bore,

  221. you know,

  222. the kind of person

  223. you really don't ever

  224. want to invite over

  225. for dinner.

  226. But, you know,

  227. when the Bible uses

  228. the word holy,

  229. the root of that word

  230. means something

  231. that's distinct.

  232. It's set apart.

  233. And just as God

  234. is supremely distinct,

  235. just as God

  236. is supremely distinct

  237. in beauty

  238. and goodness

  239. and truth,

  240. so Peter says

  241. we should be holy.

  242. If we were to paraphrase

  243. verses 14 through 16,

  244. we might put it this way.

  245. Peter's saying,

  246. look,

  247. don't go back

  248. to living like you used to.

  249. You know,

  250. you didn't know any better

  251. and your passion

  252. simply ruled your life

  253. and you just conformed

  254. to everyone around you.

  255. But he says,

  256. instead,

  257. live now

  258. in the beautiful

  259. distinction

  260. of God's own character.

  261. Mirror his goodness

  262. in everything

  263. that you do.

  264. be holy.

  265. And notice,

  266. being holy

  267. isn't just something

  268. Christians are supposed

  269. to do on Sundays.

  270. Peter says,

  271. be holy in all your conduct.

  272. And that's what we see

  273. in the early church.

  274. We see Christians

  275. together

  276. mirroring God's goodness

  277. and how they treat the poor

  278. and how they embrace

  279. one another

  280. across racial

  281. and ethnic difference

  282. and how they respond

  283. to others

  284. when people wrong them

  285. or harm them

  286. and how they care for life

  287. in all of its forms

  288. and how they approach

  289. sex and marriage.

  290. all of it,

  291. all of life,

  292. it's meant to be distinct.

  293. But Peter knows

  294. that that's a challenge,

  295. right?

  296. Because conformity,

  297. which he mentions

  298. in verse 14,

  299. conformity is always easier

  300. than holiness.

  301. In other words,

  302. it will always be easier

  303. to conform

  304. to our culture.

  305. It will always be easier

  306. to conform

  307. to our old habits

  308. and passions

  309. than to live

  310. in the beautiful distinction

  311. of God's goodness.

  312. So Peter spends

  313. most of this paragraph,

  314. actually,

  315. helping us to see

  316. how.

  317. How can we actually do it

  318. even though it's hard?

  319. And to summarize,

  320. he says,

  321. you can do it

  322. because,

  323. he says,

  324. you have a new future

  325. and he says,

  326. you have a new father

  327. and he says,

  328. you have a new freedom.

  329. In other words,

  330. Peter says,

  331. live holy lives

  332. because your relationship

  333. to the future has changed

  334. and because your relationship

  335. to God has changed

  336. and because even your relationship

  337. to your past has changed.

  338. So that's what we're going

  339. to look at this morning,

  340. those three things

  341. that Peter says

  342. as to how we can

  343. actually live

  344. into this holiness.

  345. So let's look first

  346. at how our relationship

  347. to the future has changed.

  348. In verse 13,

  349. Peter says,

  350. you have a whole new future.

  351. Therefore,

  352. preparing your minds

  353. for action

  354. and being sober-minded,

  355. set your hope

  356. fully on the grace

  357. that will be brought to you

  358. at the revelation

  359. of Jesus Christ.

  360. Now,

  361. I think most of us

  362. have our hope

  363. set on something,

  364. right?

  365. There's some future outcome

  366. that you're banking on

  367. or that you're aiming for.

  368. Maybe you hope

  369. one day

  370. to get married

  371. or maybe you hope

  372. to start a business

  373. or maybe you hope

  374. to travel the world

  375. or cure a disease

  376. or raise a few kids.

  377. What is it for you?

  378. What's the happy outcome?

  379. What's the hope?

  380. Now,

  381. none of these things

  382. are necessarily bad things

  383. to hope for,

  384. to aim for.

  385. But if we're not careful,

  386. good hopes

  387. can become ultimate hopes.

  388. Our hearts can start

  389. to believe

  390. that they are necessary

  391. for our joy.

  392. We can begin

  393. by saying

  394. something like,

  395. well,

  396. I'd like to one day,

  397. but then end up saying,

  398. I must have one day.

  399. You see the difference?

  400. And of course,

  401. the thing that becomes

  402. your ultimate hope,

  403. well,

  404. that's the thing

  405. that ultimately

  406. rules your life,

  407. right?

  408. If you set your hope

  409. fully on getting married,

  410. then you'll do

  411. whatever it takes

  412. to get a spouse,

  413. even if they're not

  414. really the person

  415. you should marry.

  416. Or if you set your hope

  417. fully on career success,

  418. then you won't be able

  419. to say no

  420. when your boss

  421. is expecting

  422. too many hours from you

  423. or when you're asked

  424. to do something

  425. that goes against

  426. your conscience.

  427. And that's why

  428. Peter says,

  429. we have to prepare

  430. our minds for action

  431. and be sober-minded.

  432. Now,

  433. literally,

  434. he says,

  435. gird up the loins

  436. of your mind.

  437. This is a great picture,

  438. isn't it?

  439. And this image,

  440. it's from the ancient world

  441. when people wore

  442. sort of long robes,

  443. right?

  444. But if you were

  445. going into battle

  446. or if you're getting ready

  447. to do some kind

  448. of physical activity,

  449. you couldn't have

  450. some super long robe

  451. getting in your way.

  452. So you'd take it

  453. and you would fold it up

  454. and you would sort of

  455. wrap it around your waist

  456. and you would tie it,

  457. you would gird it

  458. around your loins

  459. and then you'd be ready to go.

  460. You were ready for action.

  461. You'd gird up your loins.

  462. In the Old Testament,

  463. God actually told the Israelites

  464. to gird up their loins

  465. on the night of the Exodus.

  466. Be ready for action,

  467. God said,

  468. because your liberation

  469. is coming

  470. and you'll need to go

  471. tonight.

  472. So Peter's saying here

  473. that like the Israelites

  474. on the night of the Passover,

  475. we have to be ready

  476. for action.

  477. We have to set our hope

  478. fully on the only thing

  479. that won't enslave us

  480. or entrap us.

  481. We have to gird up

  482. the loins of our minds

  483. and set our hope fully

  484. on that one thing

  485. that won't make us a slave.

  486. And what is that?

  487. He says,

  488. it's the coming grace

  489. of our Lord Jesus.

  490. You see,

  491. for Christians,

  492. our hope isn't ultimately

  493. in a marriage partner

  494. or financial success

  495. or any of those things.

  496. Our ultimate hope,

  497. our ultimate happiness

  498. is what's coming

  499. in God's future grace.

  500. Now,

  501. I know sometimes

  502. when we think about

  503. the future

  504. God has in store

  505. for his people,

  506. it doesn't really

  507. thrill our hearts,

  508. does it?

  509. I read a book

  510. this past week

  511. that sort of said,

  512. you know,

  513. when we think about

  514. God's future,

  515. we often think of it

  516. sort of like the waiting room

  517. at the dentist.

  518. It's calm.

  519. There's soothing

  520. instrumental music.

  521. Everything's really clean.

  522. Some people are wearing

  523. white even.

  524. You know,

  525. this is sort of

  526. what we think of

  527. when we think of heaven,

  528. when we think of

  529. the new heavens

  530. and the new earth.

  531. But that's not

  532. what God has in store.

  533. Peter actually uses

  534. the metaphor

  535. that we just saw

  536. in the last couple of weeks.

  537. He uses the metaphor

  538. of an inheritance.

  539. Now,

  540. imagine you get a letter

  541. in the mail one day

  542. that seems to be

  543. from a reputable law office

  544. telling you

  545. that a distant relative

  546. has left you

  547. their entire estate.

  548. And it's not just

  549. a large life-changing

  550. sum of money,

  551. but a house

  552. and a fairly large

  553. piece of property

  554. in the south of France.

  555. I think you'd be

  556. a little more excited

  557. about that

  558. than visiting the waiting room

  559. of your dentist, right?

  560. Of course you would.

  561. And when Peter says

  562. you have an inheritance,

  563. he means something

  564. even more thrilling

  565. than an estate

  566. in the south of France.

  567. He's talking about

  568. a place in the new heavens

  569. and the new earth

  570. when God

  571. will continue

  572. to extend

  573. his infinite creativity

  574. and beauty

  575. through us

  576. as image bearers

  577. as we reign

  578. with him forever.

  579. But as we reign

  580. with him forever

  581. in a world

  582. that's finally set free

  583. from decay

  584. and death

  585. and loss.

  586. And remember,

  587. Peter's saying

  588. that this is the first key

  589. to holy living.

  590. Set your hope

  591. on this future grace.

  592. grace.

  593. Then you won't be

  594. controlled

  595. or ruled

  596. by lesser hopes.

  597. Then,

  598. like the early Christians,

  599. you can be generous

  600. to the poor

  601. even when it's hard

  602. because the future grace

  603. of your coming inheritance

  604. makes earthly wealth

  605. in this life

  606. pale in comparison.

  607. You have an inheritance

  608. that's coming.

  609. Future grace.

  610. So why not

  611. be generous now?

  612. You don't need

  613. to hold on to your money

  614. so tightly.

  615. And like the early Christians,

  616. you can live

  617. a single celibate life

  618. with contentment

  619. and joy

  620. even when it's hard

  621. because the future grace

  622. of your coming union

  623. with Christ

  624. makes earthly marriage

  625. pale in comparison.

  626. You don't have to seek

  627. something out

  628. in this life

  629. because you know

  630. what's coming

  631. is so much better.

  632. So Peter wants us

  633. to see that

  634. this new future

  635. that we have

  636. in the gospel,

  637. this inheritance,

  638. this grace

  639. that's coming.

  640. This is the first thing

  641. that empowers

  642. our holy living

  643. and we can gird up

  644. the loins of our mind

  645. and we can set

  646. our hope fully on it

  647. and it won't disappoint us.

  648. The second thing

  649. he points out though

  650. is not just

  651. that we have

  652. a new future

  653. but that we have

  654. a new father.

  655. It's not just

  656. our relationship

  657. to the future

  658. that's changed,

  659. it's our relationship

  660. with God,

  661. he says.

  662. Now notice how

  663. Peter implies this

  664. in verses 14

  665. through 16.

  666. If you look back

  667. at those verses,

  668. Peter is saying,

  669. he's saying,

  670. just like children

  671. imitate their parents

  672. in obedience,

  673. so you Christians,

  674. now that you are

  675. children of God,

  676. imitate your heavenly father.

  677. Be holy

  678. like he is holy.

  679. And then he says

  680. in verse 17,

  681. and if you call

  682. on him as father

  683. who judges impartially

  684. according to each

  685. one's deeds,

  686. conduct yourselves

  687. with fear

  688. throughout the time

  689. of your exile.

  690. Remember,

  691. exile is sort of

  692. Peter's way

  693. of talking about

  694. this Christian life,

  695. our pilgrimage

  696. to the new heavens

  697. and the new earth.

  698. Now this verse

  699. takes some explaining,

  700. verse 17.

  701. It sort of sounds

  702. at first like

  703. Peter's saying,

  704. okay,

  705. don't forget,

  706. your heavenly father

  707. is a merciless judge,

  708. so you better be holy

  709. or else.

  710. But I don't think

  711. that's what Peter means.

  712. I don't think

  713. he's trying to scare

  714. Christians into obedience.

  715. Now, of course,

  716. it is true

  717. that God will judge

  718. the works that believers

  719. have done in this life,

  720. and it is true

  721. that there will be

  722. varying levels

  723. of reward in heaven.

  724. Remember Jesus' parable

  725. of the talents, right?

  726. But none of that means

  727. that we're saved

  728. by our good works.

  729. Think about it.

  730. If I ask my kids

  731. to go clean their rooms,

  732. right,

  733. I might give them

  734. varying levels of praise

  735. depending on how

  736. good of a job they did.

  737. But that doesn't mean

  738. I'm expecting them

  739. to earn their status

  740. as my children

  741. based on how well

  742. they tidy up.

  743. That would raise the stakes,

  744. wouldn't it,

  745. for cleaning the room?

  746. And it's the same

  747. in the gospel, friends.

  748. We're adopted

  749. into God's family

  750. completely

  751. and solely

  752. by grace alone,

  753. through faith alone,

  754. in Christ alone.

  755. That's how we get

  756. into the family

  757. and that's what

  758. keeps us secure.

  759. So what does Peter mean

  760. in verse 17 then?

  761. I think he means

  762. something like this.

  763. The impartial judge

  764. of the universe,

  765. God,

  766. who has every right

  767. to bring our lives

  768. to account,

  769. this judge

  770. is now your father.

  771. the one

  772. whose perfect judgment

  773. will bring the world

  774. to its knees.

  775. This God

  776. has chosen

  777. to embrace you

  778. with the tender strength

  779. of a perfect father.

  780. The one who is judge

  781. you now call on

  782. as your father.

  783. And how should that

  784. impact us?

  785. Well, Peter says

  786. it ought to provoke fear.

  787. But what kind of fear?

  788. Is it terror

  789. that makes us

  790. want to run away?

  791. Or is it deep awe

  792. and wonder

  793. that makes us

  794. want to draw near?

  795. When the Bible

  796. talks about the fear

  797. of God,

  798. that's what it means.

  799. Deep,

  800. soul-changing awe.

  801. When you behold

  802. something so big

  803. and powerful

  804. and glorious

  805. that it takes you

  806. out of yourself

  807. in worship.

  808. And Peter is saying

  809. that if you know

  810. that the impartial judge

  811. is your heavenly father,

  812. then you have

  813. this holy fear

  814. that drives out

  815. all other fears.

  816. You know,

  817. if you think about it,

  818. this is part of what

  819. makes Christianity

  820. so unique.

  821. A lot of religions

  822. picture God

  823. as a judge.

  824. But if God

  825. is only a judge,

  826. can we really

  827. trust him?

  828. If God

  829. is only a judge,

  830. maybe we'll

  831. live our lives

  832. to get on his good side

  833. long enough

  834. so that he'll

  835. leave us alone

  836. and so we can

  837. do whatever we want.

  838. But if we don't

  839. God

  840. is only a judge,

  841. but you know,

  842. on the flip side,

  843. in more recent history,

  844. some religions

  845. only picture God

  846. as a father

  847. or maybe some sort

  848. of totally accepting

  849. benevolence,

  850. right?

  851. But if God,

  852. on the other hand,

  853. is just pure acceptance

  854. and pure affirmation,

  855. well,

  856. that's not very

  857. life-changing either,

  858. is it?

  859. It might be nice

  860. to think that God

  861. always approves of us,

  862. but surely not

  863. everything we do

  864. is approval-worthy,

  865. right?

  866. And what does

  867. such a God

  868. have to say

  869. about real injustice

  870. and evil in the world?

  871. Does this totally

  872. accepting benevolence

  873. just sort of smile

  874. kindly upon racism

  875. and poverty

  876. and brutality

  877. and deceit

  878. and bitterness?

  879. But in Christianity,

  880. friends,

  881. these two realities

  882. about God

  883. come together.

  884. God's perfectly just

  885. and he's perfectly loving.

  886. And through the cross,

  887. his perfect justice

  888. against sin

  889. and his perfect love

  890. for his sinful image bearers

  891. meet together.

  892. The judge of the universe,

  893. without minimizing

  894. his justice one bit,

  895. has now become

  896. our father

  897. without limiting

  898. his love

  899. in any way.

  900. So you see,

  901. in the gospel,

  902. our relationship

  903. to God

  904. has completely changed.

  905. Before,

  906. we could relate

  907. to God only

  908. as a strict judge

  909. or only as a

  910. completely permissible

  911. father,

  912. but now

  913. we live in the awe

  914. and the holy

  915. and good fear

  916. that the perfect judge

  917. is now

  918. our perfect father.

  919. So how does this relate

  920. then to living

  921. holy lives?

  922. Well,

  923. you know,

  924. for many of us,

  925. I think

  926. that it's the fear

  927. of what people

  928. will think of us.

  929. It's the fear

  930. of how

  931. they might respond

  932. that keeps us

  933. or hinders us

  934. from living

  935. holy lives.

  936. What will my

  937. co-workers think

  938. if they find out

  939. I'm a Christian?

  940. What will my

  941. friends think

  942. if I don't agree

  943. with them

  944. about this

  945. or that issue?

  946. And so in fear,

  947. we end up living

  948. lives of conformity

  949. rather than

  950. holy distinction.

  951. So what is it?

  952. What is it that

  953. will drive out

  954. this human-centered

  955. fear

  956. that so often

  957. rules our lives?

  958. Ultimately,

  959. it's what Peter's

  960. talking about

  961. in verse 17.

  962. Having a bigger

  963. fear,

  964. a bigger awe

  965. of God,

  966. the perfect

  967. judge who's

  968. become our

  969. father in the

  970. gospel.

  971. Because you see,

  972. when God's

  973. verdict,

  974. when God's

  975. approval,

  976. when God's

  977. favor matters

  978. more to us

  979. than human

  980. approval or

  981. human favor,

  982. or as the

  983. Bible puts it,

  984. when we fear

  985. God more

  986. than we fear

  987. people,

  988. then we'll be

  989. empowered to

  990. live holy

  991. lives.

  992. We won't live

  993. for a human

  994. verdict anymore

  995. because only God

  996. is the perfect

  997. judge.

  998. It's his

  999. verdict alone

  1000. that matters,

  1001. right?

  1002. And we

  1003. won't live

  1004. for human

  1005. favor anymore

  1006. because only

  1007. God is the

  1008. perfect loving

  1009. father.

  1010. And it's his

  1011. favor alone

  1012. that really

  1013. matters at the

  1014. end of the

  1015. day.

  1016. So as Peter

  1017. encourages us

  1018. to holy living,

  1019. he tells us we

  1020. have a new

  1021. future and a

  1022. new father.

  1023. He says our

  1024. relationship to

  1025. the future has

  1026. changed and our

  1027. relationship to

  1028. God has changed.

  1029. But then he goes

  1030. on to say that

  1031. even our

  1032. relationship to

  1033. our past has

  1034. changed.

  1035. So let's pick

  1036. back up in

  1037. verse 17 of

  1038. our passage.

  1039. Peter says

  1040. conduct yourselves

  1041. with fear

  1042. throughout the

  1043. time of your

  1044. exile,

  1045. knowing that you

  1046. were ransomed

  1047. from the

  1048. futile ways

  1049. inherited from

  1050. your forefathers,

  1051. not with

  1052. perishable

  1053. things such

  1054. as silver or

  1055. gold,

  1056. but with the

  1057. precious blood

  1058. of Christ,

  1059. like that of a

  1060. lamb without

  1061. blemish or

  1062. spot.

  1063. He was

  1064. foreknown before

  1065. the foundation

  1066. of the world

  1067. that was made

  1068. manifest in the

  1069. last times for

  1070. the sake of you

  1071. who through him

  1072. are believers in

  1073. God,

  1074. who raised him

  1075. from the dead

  1076. and gave him

  1077. glory so that

  1078. your faith and

  1079. hope are in

  1080. God.

  1081. Notice here how

  1082. Peter talks about

  1083. our past lives

  1084. before becoming

  1085. Christians.

  1086. He calls it the

  1087. futile ways

  1088. inherited from

  1089. your forefathers.

  1090. Now, Peter isn't

  1091. saying that everything

  1092. about their past is

  1093. bad, right?

  1094. There's plenty of

  1095. common grace in

  1096. every culture,

  1097. and God delights

  1098. in the diversity

  1099. of his human

  1100. creation, but it

  1101. is also true that

  1102. the fall has

  1103. affected every

  1104. human culture as

  1105. well.

  1106. Every culture has

  1107. its own idolatries,

  1108. its own

  1109. disordered desires,

  1110. its own futile or

  1111. empty ways, as

  1112. Peter puts it in

  1113. verse 18.

  1114. And, you know,

  1115. this isn't just

  1116. true of kind of

  1117. broad cultures,

  1118. right?

  1119. It's true of

  1120. families as well.

  1121. You know, we

  1122. inherit from our

  1123. families all sorts

  1124. of good things,

  1125. yes, but also all

  1126. sorts of futile

  1127. ways, too, don't

  1128. we?

  1129. Just think of all

  1130. that we inherit

  1131. from our forefathers,

  1132. as Peter puts it.

  1133. From our families,

  1134. we learn how to

  1135. respond and treat

  1136. people who are

  1137. different from us.

  1138. From our families,

  1139. we learn how to

  1140. think about gender

  1141. and marriage.

  1142. From our families,

  1143. we learn how to

  1144. respond to negative

  1145. emotions like anger

  1146. or sadness or fear.

  1147. From our families,

  1148. we learn how to

  1149. resolve conflict or

  1150. not resolve conflict,

  1151. as it might be,

  1152. right?

  1153. And sometimes these

  1154. things are so ingrained

  1155. that we don't even

  1156. notice them.

  1157. Or often, in our

  1158. Christian walk, these

1159. things are so kind of

  1160. habituated in us that

  1161. it seems like we'll

  1162. never be able to

  1163. change.

1164. And we can get to

  1165. the place, willingly

  1166. or unwillingly, where

1167. we say, I guess this

1168. is just who I am.

  1169. I guess it will

  1170. always be this way.

  1171. But Peter says,

  1172. remember the gospel,

  1173. friends.

  1174. You've been ransomed.

  1175. A price has been

  1176. paid for your freedom.

  1177. But not just any

  1178. price, right?

  1179. Peter says, God has

  1180. expended the most

  1181. precious thing in the

  1182. world to liberate you.

1183. He's laid down his own

1184. life and shed his own

  1185. blood.

  1186. Christ took on your

  1187. humanity and mine, and

  1188. he took all the

  1189. emptiness that's been

1190. handed down to you, and

1191. he died with it on the

  1192. cross.

1193. He took it to the

1194. grave once and for all.

  1195. So now, whatever it

1196. might be, you know, an

  1197. addiction passed down

  1198. from generation to

  1199. generation, and an

  1200. unhealthy view of

  1201. conflict and anger, a

  1202. judgmental spirit towards

  1203. particular races or

  1204. cultures, because Christ

1205. died in our place for

  1206. us, these futile ways,

1207. they no longer need to

  1208. define us.

  1209. He's ransomed us.

1210. And we can walk in

  1211. holiness.

1212. Of course, we may be

  1213. tempted to return to

  1214. them at times.

1215. You know, if you've seen

  1216. anger expressed a

  1217. certain way your entire

1218. life, it will take time

1219. for that to change, no

  1220. doubt.

  1221. But the blood of

  1222. Christ has made change

  1223. a reality.

1224. As Paul will say in

  1225. Galatians, he says, I've

  1226. been crucified with

  1227. Christ.

  1228. It's no longer I who

  1229. live, but Christ who

  1230. lives in me.

1231. And the life I now live

1232. in the flesh, I live by

1233. faith in the Son of God

1234. who loved me and gave

  1235. himself for me.

1236. I'm me, Paul says, but

  1237. it's a whole new me,

  1238. because I've died and

  1239. risen with Christ, the

  1240. one who ransomed me.

  1241. And that's what Peter's

  1242. saying here.

  1243. He's saying we have a

  1244. whole new freedom.

  1245. Our relationship to our

  1246. past has been

  1247. fundamentally changed.

1248. It no longer defines you

  1249. anymore.

1250. He says, now you can

  1251. leave those futile ways

  1252. behind and walk in

  1253. holiness.

  1254. And then Peter does

  1255. something utterly

  1256. brilliant in verses 20

  1257. through 21.

  1258. To Christians who are

  1259. struggling with their

  1260. past, who are struggling

1261. with their identity, who are

  1262. struggling with their

  1263. futile ways handed down

  1264. from their forefathers,

1265. Peter says, do you want

1266. to know the real story

  1267. about your past?

  1268. Yes, your parents and

  1269. grandparents and great

  1270. grandparents all pass down

1271. to you the idolatries and

1272. sins and fears that you

  1273. struggle with.

1274. But do you want to know

1275. what's even more true about

  1276. your past?

1277. Do you want to know where

  1278. your story really began?

  1279. Before the world was

  1280. created, Peter says in

1281. verse 20, in the vast

  1282. stretches of eternity

  1283. when all that was

  1284. was the triune God,

  1285. in the infinite

  1286. stretches of divine

  1287. bliss there, in the

  1288. perfect beauty and love

  1289. of the Godhead, the

  1290. Father looked upon the

1291. Son, and in the divine

  1292. foreknowledge, a plan

1293. was made, a plan that

1294. has now, Peter says, at

1295. long last come to light,

1296. a plan for your sake,

  1297. that through Christ the

1298. Son, you would believe in

1299. God, that through his life

1300. and glory, you would come

1301. to life and glory, to faith

  1302. and hope in God.

  1303. You see, friends, the

  1304. history that ultimately

1305. defines you is not the

1306. story of the futile ways

  1307. handed down from your

  1308. forefathers.

  1309. Back behind that, there

1310. lies a deeper story, the

  1311. story of the eternal,

1312. sovereign love of God for

1313. you and the plan he made

1314. to make you his own and

1315. to bring you to glory.

1316. And if that is your true

  1317. history, if that's what's

  1318. most true about your

1319. past, then you are free

  1320. indeed.

1321. Free to live in the

  1322. beautiful distinction of

1323. God's holiness, free to be

1324. holy in all your conduct,

1325. because he who called you

  1326. is holy.

  1327. Let's pray together.

1328. Our Father in heaven, thank

1333. your Holy Spirit to mirror

1334. your goodness in all of our

  1335. lives.

1336. Lord, we know that we fall

1337. short of that so often,

  1338. individually, in community.

1339. And yet, Lord, thank you that

1340. you continue to work out in

1341. us and through us your good

1342. purposes, that we might be

1343. holy as you are holy.

  1344. God, think trzeba

1345. God, you, for you are hum bikers

  1346. and through your reality.

1347. Father, that we may be

1348. holy, for the glory of God.

1349. To we speak through you truth

1350. and through the joy of God.

  1351. From

  1352. reflecting your goodness out

  1353. into the world.
