  1. Well, good morning again. It's great to see you all.

  2. We praise God for the people who were just up here on the stage leading us in worship in wonderful ways.

  3. Can we just give thanks to the Lord for them and for the ability to gather?

  4. It's been two years, three years since we've been able to gather freely to worship in Easter like this.

  5. And so what a wonderful morning it is to do that.

  6. And, you know, as we gather, we serve, we come to proclaim that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.

  7. It was the central theme of the early church.

  8. It was the thing that they proclaimed over and over again.

  9. And so we do celebrate it.

  10. But as we gather this morning, I want to recognize that it's not always an easy thing to believe, is it?

  11. That a man died and rose from the dead again.

  12. If you've grown up in church, you've been used to this familiar language.

  13. And so it doesn't strike you as particularly challenging.

  14. But I think that if we sit back and step and look at it, we recognize it is challenging.

  15. And I recognize that some of you may be here this morning facing a crisis of belief of your own.

  16. You may be here exploring Christianity.

  17. You may be here having gone to church all your life.

  18. But, you know, the last couple of years have been hard in our world.

  19. We've been shaken by many things.

  20. So much of the fabric of our society feels like it's being rent and torn and pulled apart.

  21. I think it feels that way societally.

  22. I think it feels that way to us personally as well.

  23. Our world has been shaken quite a bit.

  24. And I think that it's very easy in that context for it to create for us a crisis of belief.

  25. Crisis of belief comes not just for Christians.

  26. It comes for all people.

  27. When different things happen in our lives, it makes us reexamine what we believe and why we believe it.

  28. Whether you're religious or not, it makes us reexamine it.

  29. And a crisis of belief can come in many forms.

  30. It may be because something in your circumstances challenges the things that you've assumed to be true.

  31. So, a cancer diagnosis or an unexpected end to an engagement or a loss of a job

  32. makes you question, where am I going and what am I doing?

  33. Why am I doing it?

  34. Maybe the disappointment and failure of others you've trusted make you question yourself.

  35. Certainly for those of us in the church, we've struggled with the revelation of sin

  36. and church leadership in the last couple of years.

  37. If they fail, why would we continue to believe is a question that comes up in our hearts.

  38. Sometimes, as well, it's not major crises, but little things that wear away at our faith.

  39. The boredom of everyday life.

  40. The in and out of doing the same thing every day.

  41. Wondering why you've ever believed at all.

  42. This one sneaks up on us and then crystallizes in a moment.

  43. What am I doing with my life?

  44. My life is meaningless, worthless.

  45. You find yourself questioning all that you've lived for and all that you've hoped for.

  46. It may be that you have a crisis of belief this morning

  47. because someone's asked you a question that you don't know the answer to.

  48. You wonder, can I still believe?

  49. Do I really believe?

  50. Sometimes, a crisis of belief happens when we encounter others

  51. who believe something that you don't.

  52. I know this was true for me, growing up in church,

  53. but not really understanding or knowing the gospel at all,

  54. finding it pretty empty.

  55. It wasn't until I met some friends in high school, had something else.

  56. I'll tell more of my story later.

  57. But it created a crisis of belief in me.

  58. So, as we look this morning at the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  59. as we think about this story and where it is,

  60. we recognize that it is a celebration,

  61. but it is also a great word of comfort and help to us.

  62. The message of Easter speaks to us in the midst of our crisis of belief

  63. in ways that maybe we aren't aware of.

  64. And that's what we're going to look at this morning.

  65. We're going to look at John chapter 20, verses 24 through 29.

    John 20:24–29

  66. And as we turn there in your pew Bibles,

  67. I forgot to look up the page number.

  68. Anyone want to?

  69. 853.

  70. There we go.

  71. 853, if you want to look it up in the pew Bible.

  72. John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  73. John was one who knew a crisis of faith.

  74. Because John was one of the earliest disciples.

  75. He responded to Jesus' call three years earlier to lay down his life,

  76. his fishing boats, his nets, and to follow Jesus.

  77. And he had put everything into this.

  78. And at this point in the story,

  79. John is remembering how he,

  80. the day that Jesus died,

  81. faced his own crisis of faith.

  82. What in the world is happening?

  83. How could he be dead?

  84. What happens now?

  85. Did I misunderstand?

  86. Where do we go from here?

  87. Maybe these are questions you are asking as well.

  88. What is my life about?

  89. What do I believe in?

  90. Where do I go from here?

  91. We're going to look not at the resurrection text itself,

  92. but the text that talks about one of his disciples

  93. who faced his own crisis of doubt.

  94. So, John chapter 20, verses 24 and following.

    John 20:24

  95. Let's read this.

  96. Now Thomas, one of the twelve called the twin,

  97. was not with them when Jesus came.

  98. So, the other disciples told him,

  99. we have seen the Lord.

  100. But he said to them,

  101. unless I see his hands,

  102. see in his hands the mark of the nails,

  103. and place my finger in the mark of the nails,

  104. place my hand on into his side,

  105. I will never believe.

  106. Eight days later,

  107. his disciples were inside again,

  108. and Thomas was with them.

  109. Although the doors were locked,

  110. Jesus came and stood among them and said,

  111. peace be with you.

  112. And then he said to Thomas,

  113. put your finger here,

  114. see my hands,

  115. and put out your hand,

  116. and place it in my side.

  117. Do not disbelieve,

  118. but believe.

  119. And Thomas answered him,

  120. my Lord and my God.

  121. Jesus said to him,

  122. have you believed because you have seen me?

  123. Blessed are those who have not seen,

  124. and yet have believed.

  125. And now Jesus did many other signs

  126. in the presence of the disciples,

  127. which are not written in this book,

  128. but these are written

  129. so that you may believe

  130. that Jesus is the Christ,

  131. the Son of God,

  132. and that by believing,

  133. you may have life in his name.

  134. Will you pray with me for a minute?

  135. Lord, we ask for your help

  136. as we look into your word

  137. for a minute this morning.

  138. Lord, help us.

  139. Help us to understand your word.

  140. Lord, open our hearts

  141. and our minds to your truth this morning.

  142. I pray for your help

  143. that you may help me

  144. to speak your words as I ought,

  145. that we together would hear,

  146. receive, and rejoice

  147. in the good news

  148. of the resurrected Christ this morning.

  149. And we pray this in Jesus' name.

  150. Amen.

  151. So Thomas, one of the twelve,

  152. he'd walked with Jesus for three years.

  153. He was there when Jesus taught

  154. the Sermon on the Mount.

  155. He was there when Jesus fed 5,000.

  156. He was there when he raised Lazarus

  157. from the dead.

  158. What we know about Thomas

  159. from the rest of the Bible

  160. is that he was loyal.

  161. In chapter 11 of John,

  162. he says,

  163. let us go to Jerusalem with him,

  164. even though we're going to die.

  165. Let's go and stay with him.

  166. Thomas was also honest.

  167. Jesus, in the night before he died,

  168. when he was teaching his disciples

  169. about where he was going,

  170. said, you know the way.

  171. And Thomas said,

  172. uh, Jesus?

  173. I don't know.

  174. I don't know what you're talking about.

  175. We don't know the way.

  176. Thomas, in this passage,

  177. is facing a crisis of belief.

  178. And this is what we see.

  179. We're going to walk through this.

  180. In three, he said,

  181. there's a crisis of belief,

  182. there's a challenge to believe,

  183. and there's a response of faith.

  184. So we're going to look through

  185. those things this morning.

  186. Verse 24 and 25

  187. describe the crisis of belief.

  188. And here's the thing.

  189. Thomas, as we've read about this,

  190. we didn't see it right before this,

  191. Jesus appeared to the rest of the disciples

  192. when Thomas wasn't there

  193. right after his resurrection.

  194. So everybody else knew this, right?

  195. He had appeared to the women,

  196. he had appeared to the disciples,

  197. but Thomas somehow wasn't there.

  198. And so they came and told him about it,

  199. and he's like,

  200. maybe you guys saw a ghost,

  201. maybe you guys are hallucinant,

  202. I don't know what it is,

  203. but I don't believe it.

  204. No way.

  205. I'll need to touch him

  206. to know that this is really true.

  207. And look, before we criticize him,

  208. which is what we like to do in churches,

  209. we'll say,

  210. oh, look at him, he's so weak,

  211. what's wrong with him?

  212. Before we criticize him,

  213. let's recognize how much it makes sense.

  214. Resurrection was not on the radar

  215. of anyone in the first century.

  216. No religious expectation,

  217. religious system,

  218. it created an expectation for resurrection.

  219. As a matter of fact,

  220. in the Greek culture that was predominant in the,

  221. resurrection would have been a terrible thing

  222. because the death was freeing the body

  223. from this terrible,

  224. or freeing the soul

  225. from this terrible body that we have.

  226. Who would want to be resurrected?

  227. That's a terrible thing.

  228. So the Greeks didn't want this,

  229. and even the Jewish faith,

  230. who might have had some inkling

  231. of a future corporate resurrection,

  232. would never have thought

  233. that somewhere in the middle of history,

  234. one person would be raised from the dead.

  235. So nobody was expecting this.

  236. No one was looking for this.

  237. There was no cultural framework

  238. in which this made sense.

  239. So Thomas could be forgiven

  240. for not believing

  241. what seems like an unbelievable claim.

  242. Someone who is dead

  243. has now been raised again

  244. and is alive.

  245. Now what kind of belief was this?

  246. Was it merely rational skepticism?

  247. Was he just an empiricist?

  248. I need to see it, touch it.

  249. I need to do scientific experiments

  250. to make sure it's true.

  251. Maybe, but maybe not.

  252. Maybe he was also

  253. a devastated follower of Jesus.

  254. He'd put all his hope,

  255. followed him for three years.

  256. He didn't want to look foolish

  257. by continuing to hope

  258. when that hope had been crushed.

  259. He didn't want to be disappointed again

  260. by putting his faith in something.

  261. That seems to have been robbed from him

  262. and taken out from under him.

  263. In his grief and his pain,

  264. holding on to belief

  265. that Jesus was raised from the dead

  266. would have just made it worse.

  267. I think it's,

  268. to be sympathetic to Thomas,

  269. there are a lot of reasons,

  270. good reasons why

  271. he had this crisis of belief.

  272. Maybe he's a devastated devotee.

  273. Maybe he's a cynical rationalist.

  274. We don't know all of his heart.

  275. But certainly,

  276. if we imagine these things,

  277. we can stop and think about ourselves.

  278. Is there anything that I've said

  279. about Thomas that rings true for you?

  280. Maybe you've grown up in the faith,

  281. but you're not sure

  282. if the evidence is there.

  283. Maybe you've not grown up in church

  284. and you're exploring

  285. why in the world

  286. people would believe

  287. such an incredible fairy tale.

  288. Maybe you have honest questions

  289. about what the facts are.

  290. But maybe your questions

  291. aren't as intellectual.

  292. Maybe they're more spiritual.

  293. Maybe you don't want to look foolish

  294. by hooking your wagon

  295. to the wrong thing.

  296. Maybe you've been religiously disappointed

  297. by the failures of the church

  298. and the scandals that have happened.

  299. Maybe you've been so disillusioned

  300. by your experience

  301. of what others have claimed

  302. to be Christianity

  303. that you think,

  304. why would I want to do that?

  305. Why would I want to keep thinking this

  306. or believing it?

  307. And maybe you're here this morning

  308. and your world has just fallen apart

  309. and you don't know

  310. what you believe today.

  311. And you don't want to hope

  312. against reason,

  313. but you also don't want

  314. to make yourself vulnerable

  315. to being disappointed again.

  316. Friends,

  317. the amazing news about Easter

  318. is that God and Jesus meets us

  319. in these questions and doubts.

  320. This is what happens

  321. in verse 26 and 27.

  322. Having exposed the crisis of belief

  323. that Thomas is going through,

  324. now John continues to his account

  325. by saying,

  326. this is what happens.

  327. Jesus shows up

  328. and he challenges Thomas to believe.

  329. So a week later,

  330. Thomas was still around,

  331. all the disciples were still there,

  332. and Thomas hadn't bailed

  333. and gone back

  334. to wherever he came from.

  335. He was still around,

  336. but they're afraid.

  337. This is an echo

  338. of verse 19 of chapter 20,

  339. where it seems like they're afraid

  340. because their belief in Jesus

  341. had put them at odds

  342. with the Jewish leaders

  343. who had been a part

  344. of putting Jesus to death,

  345. and they didn't want

  346. to be publicly identified

  347. because they feared

  348. for their lives.

  349. So they're in a locked room,

  350. they're trying to protect themselves,

  351. and Jesus shows up.

  352. And look, friends,

  353. we don't know how the physics

  354. of this happened.

  355. Maybe Jesus miraculously

  356. unlocked the door,

  357. and maybe he just walked through it.

  358. But somehow,

  359. in a room that a normal human being

  360. could not have walked into,

  361. Jesus walks in.

  362. Jesus walks in,

  363. and in his graciousness,

  364. he meets Thomas

  365. in two ways.

  366. He meets him as a skeptic,

  367. and he meets him

  368. as one with a wounded heart.

  369. He walks in,

  370. and he says,

  371. just like he did to the disciples

  372. back a few verses earlier,

  373. peace be with you.

  374. And then he looks at Thomas.

  375. Because he's the Lord of all,

  376. he knows what Thomas

  377. had already said.

  378. He knows what Thomas'

  379. heart was like.

  380. And he looks at Thomas,

  381. and in love he says,

  382. Thomas, look.

  383. It's really true.

  384. Put your finger here.

  385. Put your hand here.

  386. And you know,

  387. when he talks about the side,

  388. this may sound crazy,

  389. but one of the thieves

  390. could have been raised

  391. from the dead,

  392. and he would have had

  393. holes in his hands and feet,

  394. and it could have been like,

  395. well, maybe you're just

  396. one of those other guys

  397. resurrected,

  398. and not Jesus.

  399. But only Jesus

  400. had a wound in his side.

  401. Jesus looks at Thomas

  402. and says,

  403. you need help to believe

  404. here.

  405. I will give you the evidence.

  406. I will give you

  407. the physical evidence

  408. that you need to believe

  409. that this is true.

  410. But he also

  411. looks at Thomas

  412. and he says,

  413. I know you're afraid.

  414. I know you're afraid

  415. to believe.

  416. And he says,

  417. peace be with you.

  418. It's easy to overlook this,

  419. but this is Jesus wishing

  420. shalom upon Thomas

  421. and upon the disciples.

  422. The peace with God.

  423. The peace that could

  424. not have been even imaginable

  425. for these disciples

  426. at this time.

  427. Jesus looks at them

  428. and says,

  429. I know that when I died,

  430. you thought the world

  431. had fallen apart,

  432. but it didn't.

  433. Actually,

  434. it was the best thing

  435. that ever happened.

  436. By my death,

  437. peace with God

  438. is now possible.

  439. By my death,

  440. the world

  441. that has been falling apart

  442. by sin

  443. is now going to live

  444. with a new hope

  445. that it can be held together.

  446. Salvation is now possible

  447. because of that.

  448. So Jesus looks at Thomas

  449. and he says,

  450. Thomas,

  451. don't hide.

  452. Don't fear.

  453. Come out and believe.

  454. He doesn't even rebuke Thomas.

  455. I think verse 29,

  456. there's some different ways

  457. you could formulate

  458. this sentence

  459. and the way that

  460. the ESV has it

  461. is more of a question.

  462. Have you believed

  463. because you've seen me?

  464. Almost like a rebuke.

  465. But I think it's actually

  466. better read

  467. just as a statement.

  468. Jesus looks at Thomas

  469. and says,

  470. you've believed now

  471. because you've seen me.

  472. And that's good.

  473. And he says,

  474. and there's going to be

  475. a blessing for those

  476. who will come

  477. who won't get to see you

  478. the way,

  479. see me the way you do.

  480. But they too will believe

  481. because what this is

  482. is just the beginning

  483. of what God has

  484. for this world.

  485. Jesus comes

  486. and he meets Thomas

  487. graciously,

  488. kindly.

  489. He says,

  490. I know your fears.

  491. I know your need

  492. for help

  493. in believing

  494. and I'm going to give you

  495. what you need.

  496. Here's my evidence.

  497. See this.

  498. Here's my peace

  499. to be with you.

  500. So the resurrected Jesus

  501. meets Thomas

  502. and us

  503. on both of these levels

  504. with the questions

  505. that we ask

  506. and the things

  507. that we need.

  508. And this, of course,

  509. is all that what John

  510. is doing.

  511. As John has written

  512. this entire gospel account,

  513. all 21 chapters of it,

  514. we see this

  515. in verses 30 and 31.

  516. John says,

  517. this is why

  518. I wrote this book.

  519. Jesus did many things,

  520. many more things

  521. than I could even count

  522. in this one book.

  523. But the things

  524. that have been written

  525. have been written

  526. so that you may understand

  527. who Jesus is

  528. and in understanding

  529. that you may believe

  530. and by believing

  531. that you may have life

  532. in his name.

  533. John has marshaled

  534. all sorts of arguments

  535. and if you're here

  536. this morning

  537. and you're like,

  538. I want to know

  539. what those things are.

  540. Here are a few of them.

  541. One,

  542. there were many witnesses

  543. to Jesus

  544. as a resurrected person

  545. walking the earth.

  546. Some would still

  547. have been living

  548. at the writing

  549. of much of the New Testament.

  550. The disciples saw him.

  551. Women saw him.

  552. The diversity of people

  553. from various places

  554. in the world saw him.

  555. This was not one person's fantasy

  556. that was then expounded

  557. but many people

  558. got to see him.

  559. And the account

  560. is written by John

  561. in a way

  562. that doesn't make any sense

  563. if it weren't

  564. a historically true account.

  565. It includes

  566. the testimony of women

  567. which would have been

  568. completely dismissed

  569. in the first century.

  570. And yet John says,

  571. don't you see?

  572. God graciously gave

  573. these women

  574. the grace of testifying

  575. first

  576. to the good news

  577. of the resurrected Christ.

  578. And it's included.

  579. Some people have said

  580. that this whole account

  581. was constructed.

  582. But here's a question for you.

  583. Why would anyone

  584. say a group of disciples

  585. who are trying to build

  586. a religion

  587. out of their own heads

  588. write a story

  589. about how they didn't believe

  590. that Jesus rose from the dead?

  591. Why would Thomas

  592. have ever let this

  593. get through the editing process?

  594. Some people have wondered,

  595. well, isn't the Bible

  596. just a really old document?

  597. Do we really have good evidence

  598. that the documentary,

  599. the actual papers

  600. are early enough

  601. that they haven't been edited

  602. and changed

  603. so many times over history?

  604. Well, friends,

  605. these are all good questions.

  606. But the fact is

  607. the New Testament

  608. is one of the best

  609. attested documents

  610. in the entire ancient world.

  611. We have a book table.

  612. I want to point you to it.

  613. It's going to be

  614. in the back afterwards

  615. if you want to grab

  616. some resources.

  617. Tim Keller

  618. is a great resource

  619. to look at

  620. to see some of those things.

  621. There's also some

  622. children's ministry resources

  623. there for if you have kids

  624. and want to help them

  625. understand the resurrection.

  626. We also have a book

  627. stall downstairs

  628. that if you really want

  629. to dive into the deep end,

  630. N.T. Wright,

  631. The Resurrection of the Son of God

  632. is the pinnacle

  633. of good research

  634. on the historical evidence

  635. for why we should believe.

  636. So John is writing this book

  637. recounting this story

  638. about how Jesus met Thomas

  639. and said,

  640. here's evidence.

  641. John is writing this book

  642. to say there's actually

  643. a lot more evidence

  644. for us to believe.

  645. And so,

  646. Jesus says to us,

  647. do not disbelieve,

  648. but believe.

  649. This is the challenge

  650. for us this morning.

  651. And then we see

  652. in verses 28 and 29

  653. the response.

  654. Thomas responds

  655. with a striking response.

  656. He says,

  657. my Lord

  658. and my God.

  659. Now,

  660. if you're writing a play

  661. and this is the dialogue,

  662. your editor might come to you

  663. and say,

  664. why this?

  665. This is a really weird response.

  666. How about something like,

  667. whoa,

  668. you're alive!

  669. I didn't expect that.

  670. How did that happen?

  671. There are a lot of other

  672. very normal responses

  673. to this

  674. where we would have,

  675. where it could,

  676. you know,

  677. maybe he would have fallen down

  678. on his feet in worship.

  679. Maybe he would have fallen

  680. backwards and faint.

  681. Maybe,

  682. you know,

  683. there are lots of responses

  684. we can imagine.

  685. But Thomas actually says this,

  686. he recognizes

  687. who Jesus is

  688. in a new and profound way.

  689. The writer,

  690. John,

  691. had predicted this

  692. back in John 20.

  693. 12,

  694. 16,

  695. when he says this,

  696. as Jesus was talking

  697. about his coming crucifixion,

  698. says his disciples

  699. did not understand

  700. these things at first,

  701. but when Jesus was glorified,

  702. that is,

  703. when he was raised

  704. from the dead,

  705. then they remembered

  706. that these things

  707. had been written about him

  708. and had been done to him.

  709. And it made sense.

  710. And for Thomas,

  711. seeing Jesus

  712. was the crystallizing factor

  713. that brought everything

  714. that he had seen

  715. about Jesus together.

  716. The resurrection of Jesus

  717. allowed Thomas

  718. to put together

  719. the miracles

  720. that he had seen,

  721. the ways that he had loved people,

  722. the forgiveness

  723. that he had offered

  724. to sinners

  725. and undeserving people,

  726. the way that he had called

  727. all people to himself

  728. and pointed them to God

  729. in a way that no one else had

  730. and kept pointing to himself

  731. as the center of it.

  732. I am the one

  733. who's coming to save you.

  734. I am the one

  735. who's come to be your redeemer.

  736. I am the one

  737. who's come to do this.

  738. And so he looks,

  739. Thomas looks at Jesus

  740. and says,

  741. Now I understand.

  742. You are my Lord

  743. and my God.

  744. My Lord,

  745. the name that the Jews

  746. use for the sovereign God

  747. who rules over the world.

  748. God,

  749. recognizing his deity,

  750. which would have been blasphemous

  751. in the mouth of a Jew,

  752. and yet he recognizes

  753. this man standing before him

  754. with flesh and blood

  755. was God himself.

  756. Thomas looks and says,

  757. My Lord and my God.

  758. And it wasn't just

  759. a theological affirmation.

  760. It was personal.

  761. He repeated it.

  762. My Lord,

  763. my God.

  764. He felt the healing touch

  765. of seeing Jesus

  766. raised from the dead.

  767. He reasserted his trust in

  768. and his love for

  769. and his submission

  770. to Jesus

  771. as the one

  772. who had come

  773. to save him.

  774. The things that he had hoped for

  775. when he saw Jesus

  776. ministering on earth,

  777. now he saw.

  778. It's better than he could imagine.

  779. My Lord

  780. and my God.

  781. A complete turnaround.

  782. I will never believe

  783. to my Lord

  784. and my God.

  785. And if that seems sudden,

  786. friends,

  787. I want to encourage you,

  788. go back and read

  789. the New Testament.

  790. Go back and read

  791. the gospel accounts

  792. of people who encountered Jesus.

  793. Go back and read

  794. the book of Acts

  795. as people heard.

  796. The preaching about

  797. Jesus Christ

  798. risen from the dead.

  799. The change happens.

  800. They go from belief

  801. to unbelief.

  802. And though many of us

  803. have a process

  804. by which we do this,

  805. there is often also

  806. a time where that change

  807. becomes very evident

  808. and very clear.

  809. this is my own testimony

  810. of encountering Jesus.

  811. I said earlier,

  812. I grew up going to church,

  813. I knew the Bible stories,

  814. but I didn't know God

  815. and I didn't know Jesus.

  816. And everything that I was taught,

  817. it just didn't make sense to me.

  818. I knew some of the facts,

  819. but I didn't believe them.

  820. Then in high school,

  821. I met some friends

  822. who started talking about

  823. a personal relationship

  824. with Jesus.

  825. Jesus.

  826. And honestly,

  827. I scorned them.

  828. I made fun of them.

  829. But I also saw in them

  830. something about their life

  831. that I couldn't explain.

  832. But the further on I saw it

  833. and the more I interacted with them,

  834. I said,

  835. whatever they have,

  836. there's something that I want.

  837. They loved me well

  838. and prayed

  839. and talked to me

  840. about Jesus and the Bible.

  841. They gave me

  842. Mere Christianity

  843. by C.S. Lewis.

  844. And I saw the facts

  845. come together.

  846. And I was confronted

  847. with the trilemma

  848. that C.S. Lewis

  849. presents to all of us,

  850. which is that

  851. if the account of the Bible

  852. has any historical reliability,

  853. then Jesus presents to us

  854. a number of options.

  855. Right?

  856. But He can't be

  857. just a good teacher.

  858. He can't be just a good guy

  859. for us to listen to

  860. when we want to.

  861. He has to speak to us

  862. with the fullness

  863. of all He does.

  864. And either

  865. He's a liar,

  866. that is,

  867. He claims to be

  868. what He's not,

  869. or He's a lunatic,

  870. which means He's a crazy man

  871. who believes in His head

  872. something that is just

  873. outside of reality,

  874. or He really is

  875. who He says He is

  876. because He claims

  877. to be the risen one.

  878. He receives

  879. Thomas' affirmation,

  880. my Lord and my God.

  881. He says,

  882. yes, Thomas,

  883. that's right.

  884. That's what I am to you.

  885. I am your Lord

  886. and your God.

  887. And I was confronted

  888. with this dilemma

  889. and I wrestled with it

  890. because I knew that

  891. to believe this

  892. would change my life.

  893. I'd seen my friends.

  894. They lived differently.

  895. There was a joy

  896. and a love

  897. and a devotion

  898. and a reorientation

  899. of their lives.

  900. And I knew it would be costly,

  901. but it also

  902. was compelling to me.

  903. And when I became convinced

  904. of who Jesus was

  905. and specifically

  906. when I realized

  907. Jesus was risen from the dead

  908. and I can't ignore Him anymore,

  909. I have to decide

  910. what do I believe about Him?

  911. Either He did or He didn't.

  912. Either He was or He wasn't

  913. who He said He was.

  914. And this is what Jesus does

  915. with Thomas.

  916. And this is what He does with us.

  917. He calls us to believe.

  918. Do you want to clarify

  919. that biblical belief

  920. is not merely wishful thinking

  921. or hopeful optimism

  922. about some vague future?

  923. It's not believing

  924. something against reason

  925. or plain evidence.

  926. It's not merely agreeing to facts

  927. or sent to the reality

  928. that facts portray.

  929. It is trust.

  930. It is entrusting yourself

  931. into a belief system

  932. whereby you reorient your life

  933. around God

  934. because you've trusted

  935. that His death

  936. and His resurrection

  937. make all the difference

  938. in the world.

  939. Why do we believe that, though?

  940. Why do we believe

  941. that the resurrection

  942. is such good news

  943. that if we are convinced

  944. of its truth

  945. that we would want

  946. to embrace it?

  947. Friends, because,

  948. just like Thomas,

  949. the resurrection heals

  950. our wounded hearts.

  951. The resurrection

  952. of Jesus Christ

  953. from the dead

  954. means our salvation.

  955. The greatest enemy

  956. of our souls,

  957. that is,

  958. the sinfulness

  959. that is in us

  960. and in our world

  961. because of humanity,

  962. has been defeated

  963. in the resurrection

  964. of Jesus.

  965. Our greatest need

  966. as humanity

  967. to be reconciled

  968. to our Creator God

  969. has been met

  970. by what makes it possible

  971. for us to know

  972. a God

  973. whom we have

  974. in our sinfulness

  975. rejected Him

  976. in independence

  977. and pride.

  978. Jesus,

  979. by His resurrection,

  980. shows us

  981. that the God

  982. of love

  983. who has come

  984. to die for us

  985. is now a living Savior

  986. who is able

  987. to save us.

  988. A resurrection,

  989. a resurrected Jesus

  990. also means for us

  991. hope

  992. that the worst of today

  993. will not last

  994. and the best of today

  995. will be eclipsed

  996. by the goodness

  997. that is to come.

  998. The evil of this day

  999. will not win

1000. even when it looks like it.

  1001. The sorrow

  1002. and the suffering

1003. we face in this world,

1004. the loss of a loved one,

  1005. the disappointment

  1006. of dashed dreams

  1007. and hopes,

  1008. the grinding difficulty

  1009. of daily life,

  1010. the confusion,

  1011. doubt,

  1012. and fear

  1013. that we face

  1014. in uncertain times.

  1015. A resurrected Jesus

1016. means that we have hope

  1017. in the midst

  1018. of these things.

1019. He is a living God

  1020. who is able

  1021. to walk with us

  1022. through these trials.

1023. He is a living Savior

  1024. who has saved us

  1025. and will never

  1026. let us go.

1027. He is a loving Savior

1028. who will love us forever.

  1029. And friends,

  1030. when we look

1031. at the end of the Bible,

  1032. we are reminded

  1033. of these amazing words.

  1034. As the Apostle John

1035. near the end of his life

  1036. had a vision

  1037. of what would happen

1038. at the end of times

  1039. when Jesus would return

  1040. and establish

  1041. His kingdom forever,

  1042. the risen Jesus

  1043. who is not dead

  1044. in His grave

  1045. but who is risen

  1046. and coming again,

1047. this is what will happen

  1048. when He returns.

  1049. John writes,

  1050. Then I saw a new heaven

  1051. and a new earth

  1052. for the first heaven

  1053. and the first earth

  1054. have passed away

1055. and the sea was no more.

1056. And I saw the heavenly city

  1057. in New Jerusalem

  1058. coming down

1059. out of heaven from God

  1060. prepared as a bride

  1061. adorned for her husband.

  1062. And I heard a loud voice

  1063. from the throne

  1064. saying,

  1065. Behold,

1066. the dwelling place of God

  1067. is with man.

1068. He will dwell with them

1069. and they will be His people.

  1070. and God Himself

  1071. will be with them

  1072. as their God.

  1073. He will wipe away

1074. every tear from their eyes

1075. and death shall be no more.

1076. Neither shall there be mourning

  1077. nor crying

  1078. nor pain anymore

  1079. for the former things

  1080. have passed away.

1081. And He who is seated

  1082. on the throne

  1083. said,

  1084. Behold,

1085. I am making all things new.

  1086. Friends,

1087. this is the good news

  1088. of the resurrected Jesus.

1089. He is a living Savior today

1090. and one day He will come

1091. and He will make all things

  1092. new for us.

  1093. Do not disbelieve,

  1094. but believe today

  1095. and rejoice.

1096. Christ is risen from the dead.

  1097. He is risen indeed.

  1098. Let's pray.

  1099. Lord, we thank You.

  1100. We thank You

  1101. as we

  1102. remember these truths

1103. and we see the gracious way

1104. in which You meet us.

  1105. Lord,

  1106. that the story

  1107. of the resurrection

  1108. is an incredible,

  1109. towering truth

  1110. and a wonderful balm

  1111. for our soul.

  1112. God,

  1113. be our help today.

  1114. Help us,

  1115. Lord.

  1116. We believe.

  1117. Help us

  1118. in our unbelief.

  1119. Lord,

  1120. will You

  1121. today

  1122. fill us

  1123. with the joy,

  1124. the joy of knowing

  1125. that You are

  1126. a resurrected

  1127. and a living Savior

  1128. for us.

  1129. We pray this

  1130. in Jesus' name.

  1131. Amen.
