  1. Good morning, church. It's good to see you this morning.

  2. I was blessed to be here yesterday for Amy and Brian's wedding, so if you think about it,

  3. pray for them as they begin their married life together. And one other announcement,

  4. and this is not Tom's fault because we didn't tell him to do this, but if you are leaving,

  5. please let sure you let us know so we can celebrate you in a couple of weeks at our

  6. send-off Sunday. So if you're graduating or if you are leaving town, please let us know for those

  7. things. Okay. We read the headlines of the state of the church around the world. There are times when

  8. these headlines are fearsome. We read of churches burned. We read of pastors imprisoned.

  9. We read of police raids on gatherings of believers. We read of missionaries who are attacked.

  10. Places like Myanmar, Afghanistan, China, Nigeria, North Korea, and others, such things are happening.

  11. All five of these countries are in the top 20 watch list for the most dangerous places in the world

  12. for Christians to live. How do we respond to this? Maybe we're filled with compassion and moved to prayer

  13. and to giving. Maybe we're filled with outrage and moved to advocate for human rights and for intervention.

  14. And these are good responses. But what if it comes home? What if it were you? What if it were us?

  15. What if we woke up one morning and Trinity had been raided and burned? What if your pastors were put in

  16. prison for preaching the gospel? What if your small group was in fear of being raided by police?

  17. How would you respond? Hopefully we'd be prayerful. We might be outraged and seek redress and

  18. some sort of help from the government. But you know, we might also wonder, did we do something to deserve

  19. this? Have we done something wrong? Is God judging us? Or has God abandoned us?

  20. These are some of the questions that the early church asked themselves as they saw persecution

  21. rise against the early church. As we've been studying in the book of 1 Peter, Peter writes this

  22. letter to a group of churches in Asia Minor that either have been or are now or will soon be suffering

  23. from various forms of persecution. As Peter writes a letter, it was not a matter of if but a matter of when

  24. they would face these kinds of trials.

  25. How do we respond? What kinds of attitudes are we to have in the face of persecution?

  26. What does God want to bring to us in the midst of persecution? These are the questions that our passage

  27. looks at this morning. So if you want to turn to me, we're in 1 Peter chapter 4 starting in verse 12.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  28. That is page 950-something in your pew Bible, and that'll get you close enough

  29. to find it. 1 Peter chapter 4 verses 12 through 19. As we come to this, recognize that this is often seen

    1 Peter 4:12–19

  30. as a beginning of the last section of the book. The last section that Pastor Nick preached on last

  31. week ends with a doxology, what seems like a wrapping up of a thought, and Peter now comes back

  32. with his pastoral heart to encourage the churches that he's writing to as he writes these things.

  33. 1 Peter chapter 4 verses starting in verse 12.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  34. Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you,

  35. as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's

  36. sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for

  37. the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.

  38. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, or an evildoer, or as a meddler.

  39. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed.

  40. But let him glorify God in that name. For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God,

  41. and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

  42. And if the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?

  43. Therefore, let those who suffer according to Christ's will—sorry, according to God's will—entrust their soul

  44. to a faithful creator while doing good.

  45. Will you pray with me?

  46. Lord Jesus, we look at this passage. We come to it this morning.

  47. Lord, we ask for your Holy Spirit, Lord, to open our minds to understand your word,

  48. to soften our hearts to receive your word.

  49. God, we pray this morning that you would shape us, our hearts and our souls,

  50. Lord, so that we might be those who walk through suffering

  51. in ways that bring glory and honor to you.

  52. Lord, I pray for my words and for your help,

  53. that I might speak your words this morning, Lord,

  54. and that you would use them in all of our lives.

  55. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  56. Amen.

  57. So how does God want us to see this kind of suffering?

  58. This kind of suffering that comes from persecution, suffering for Christ's sake.

  59. Three things we're going to look at.

  60. Verses 12 and 13 tells us that persecution brings not surprise, but joy.

  61. Verses 14 through 16 tells us that persecution brings not shame, but blessing.

  62. Verses 17 through 19 will tell us that persecution brings not fear of condemnation, but confident faith.

  63. So that's your outline.

  64. For those of you who are taking notes, that's what we'll be looking at in order.

  65. We'll just walk through the passage, and we'll explain it and seek to apply it to our lives a bit as we go.

  66. So first, verses 12 and 13, persecution brings not surprise, but joy.

  67. There are two imperatives here.

  68. Paul is exhorting the congregation to think about two things and to do two things.

  69. The first one is, do not be surprised by the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you.

  70. Right?

  71. This imagery brings to mind very, you know, for anyone who's read the Old Testament, Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego,

  72. the three men who were thrown literally into a fiery furnace

  73. because they would not bow down and worship a different God,

  74. but that they would maintain their fidelity to their worship of God alone.

  75. But it says here, Peter says, this fiery trial has come to test you,

  76. to reveal the character of your faith.

  77. What kind of suffering is it?

  78. It's important to see here as we think about this fiery trial.

  79. It is not just hardship of living in a fallen world.

  80. It's not just the trials of living around other people who make your life difficult

  81. or living with natural disasters or diseases.

  82. Those are a different kind of suffering.

  83. There are passages that tell us to rejoice in those too.

  84. Places like James 1 and Romans 5.

  85. But here in particular, Peter is talking about suffering for persecution.

  86. Suffering that is for Christ's sake.

  87. We'll see that more in verses 14 and 16.

  88. This is suffering that is being identified as loyalty to Christ

  89. that is provoking or causing the trial that we are going through.

  90. And it might be physical harm.

  91. It might be verbal or relational.

  92. You may be maligned or reviled or spoken against or insulted.

  93. You may be excluded.

  94. You may be discriminated against.

  95. All of these things are ways that we suffer persecution.

  96. That is the negative effects of others upon us

  97. because we are followers of Christ and publicly identifying with Him.

  98. And Peter says, don't be surprised.

  99. For those of us who live in the Western world,

  100. this is not an easy thing because we've grown up in a world

  101. that for hundreds of years has been undergirded by a welcoming

  102. or by a general embracing of a Christian worldview.

  103. And so there's been a lot of places where being a Christian

  104. has been in sync with our culture,

  105. been in sync with the worldview of our neighbors around us,

  106. regardless of what faith they profess.

  107. But that presumption is not a one that Christians should hold broadly.

  108. We see this in the rest of the world where Christians suffer deeply

  109. because their Christian faith is out of line so much

  110. with the worldview of the culture that they live in.

  111. And we find ourselves in a culture that is increasingly at odds

  112. with a Christian worldview as well.

  113. And we have to remember that Christ Himself predicted this.

  114. In John 15, 20, He says,

  115. A servant is not greater than his master.

  116. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.

  117. And we see that this was true from the very beginning of the church.

  118. The passage that Tony read earlier from Acts 5.

  119. Remarkable, isn't it?

  120. The early church suffering, being beaten,

  121. being accused, being arrested, being threatened,

  122. and yet they counted it worthy.

  123. They rejoiced because they were counted worthy of suffering for the name of Jesus.

  124. We are tempted when facing persecution to be surprised, I think.

  125. We are tempted to fall into self-pity.

  126. Oh my gosh, I can't believe this is happening to me.

  127. This is so terrible.

  128. Or self-justification.

  129. Well, I'm right and they're wrong.

  130. And we become proud and arrogant.

  131. Sometimes we go on the attack.

  132. Well, those people are doing wrong for attacking me.

  133. Why can't they be tolerant to me the way I'm trying to be tolerant with them?

  134. But Peter says,

  135. Don't be surprised and fall into these heart attitudes.

  136. But instead, his second imperative,

  137. Rejoice.

  138. And he gives a reason.

  139. Look in verse 13.

  140. He gives a reason.

  141. Rejoice insofar as you share in Christ's sufferings,

  142. that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

  143. You see, the key, according to Peter,

  144. for our ability to rejoice even in the face of persecution

  145. is that our joy now is a part of our joy later.

  146. That our suffering now is a part of the glory that will come later.

  147. This is the pattern of Jesus,

  148. that his cross comes before the crown.

  149. Jesus, who, according to Hebrews 12, says,

  150. For the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

  151. despising the shame,

  152. and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  153. Peter says,

  154. Don't be surprised because Christ suffered as well,

  155. and your union with him,

  156. because of your faith in him,

  157. you are joined with him.

  158. And as you are joined with him in your suffering,

  159. you are also joined with him in his joy.

  160. And this joy is now that you can have in the midst of suffering.

  161. And this is joy that you can have

  162. knowing that there will be a future that will be only joy

  163. and no more suffering in his glory.

  164. Peter is suggesting that our fellowship with Christ,

  165. our union with Christ,

  166. is deepened through persecution.

  167. And we enjoy a depth of fellowship with Christ that we never could have had

  168. in the same way if we had not suffered.

  169. Because only when we suffer do we know this Christ-like joy in the midst of persecution

  170. that allows us to see the glory of the joy that is to come.

  171. So Peter says,

  172. Persecution brings not surprise to Christians,

  173. but joy because of Christ.

  174. And then he goes on in verses 14 to 16.

  175. He says,

  176. Persecution brings not shame,

  177. but blessing.

  178. We might wonder,

  179. Why shame?

  180. Why is he talking about being ashamed in this context?

  181. Well,

  182. Peter is writing to a church that's living in a largely non-Christian culture.

  183. People would walk out their doors

  184. and they would see the Roman pantheon

  185. lived out in all sorts of big and small ways in their everyday life.

  186. Right?

  187. Something that we as Americans find it hard,

  188. even in a place like New England

  189. where there are churches on every corner.

  190. Half of them are now condos,

  191. but there are still churches.

  192. And we see all of those things.

  193. Right?

  194. We see how much that's been a part of our culture.

  195. But Peter is writing to a place where Christians were small and despised,

  196. not highlighted,

  197. not seen.

  198. Peter's saying,

  199. You may feel like your faith is being diminished and dismissed in your culture.

  200. You may feel marginalized and discriminated against.

  201. You may feel the threat of violence and physical harm.

  202. And these things are real.

  203. The privilege that I had of meeting believers in China

  204. who lived in a much more of this kind of a culture

  205. and to see them,

  206. it was easy at times for them to become so discouraged and overwhelmed.

  207. Is this really worth it?

  208. Should we really do that?

  209. They become ashamed of the gospel

  210. because it feels so out of step with the world around them.

  211. You believe that there's something wrong with you because of your faith.

  212. The day may be coming when we're close to that here in the West as well.

  213. You might feel it in small ways and in large ways.

  214. You might feel it when you're not up on the latest TV shows and movies

  215. because you've chosen to fill your mind with things that are profitable.

  216. Maybe you're suffering as a parent

  217. because your child can't sign up for community sports

  218. because they have all their games on Sunday morning

  219. and you've made a prior commitment to be a part of attending church

  220. and being a part of the church community.

  221. Maybe you're a student

  222. and you know that the views that you're expressing in your term paper

  223. that flow from your Christian convictions and worldview,

  224. you know that you're going to get docked points

  225. for not the argument,

  226. but for the content of what you say.

  227. You know that you will suffer a lower grade because of that.

  228. It's easy in these contexts to feel ashamed,

  229. but Peter says don't.

  230. Don't be ashamed.

  231. He goes on and he warns us,

  232. but make sure that we're not suffering those things for the wrong reasons.

  233. You see, this is what verse 15 says, right?

  234. But my summary is like,

  235. suffer for Christ, not for being stupid.

  236. What he really means is,

  237. don't suffer for doing wrong, right?

  238. Don't be rude, ungodly, hateful.

  239. Don't be a murderer, a thief.

  240. I love this word meddler.

  241. It means getting your nose into other people's businesses

  242. in the wrong way,

  243. in an unhelpful or ungodly way.

  244. You don't have to fix the whole world.

  245. You don't have to make everyone do what's right in the world.

  246. Even if you know it because of Christ,

  247. you don't have to make everyone—

  248. that's not your job.

  249. So let's not fall into those things

  250. and find ourselves on the back end of persecution and backlash

  251. for being ungodly people.

  252. Because look, we can do it.

  253. Christians, out of zeal for certain truths,

  254. can do terrible things.

  255. We can even justify violence against others

  256. on the basis of upholding Christian values.

  257. We can cheat or steal

  258. because we claim self-righteous ownership of things.

  259. We can compel others to conform to Christian ethics

  260. in a world that we can invite them to do it,

  261. but to compel them to do it?

  262. Peter says,

  263. let us not be suffering for the wrong reasons,

  264. but if we suffer in the name of Christ,

  265. if we suffer for being a Christian,

  266. if we suffer because we identify with Jesus

  267. and his gospel of grace,

  268. we will always feel like we don't totally belong.

  269. We will always feel that we will be misunderstood.

  270. And increasingly in our world,

  271. we will be assigned false motives.

  272. Friends, let us not be unwise about our moment today.

  273. There are places where a Christian worldview

  274. is increasingly out of step with our culture.

  275. In ethics, as we think about the beginning of life

  276. and the end of life,

  277. as we think about things like abortion and euthanasia,

  278. Christians will uphold a pro-life stance.

  279. Not in a political sense,

  280. but in a sense of God loves and cares about life

  281. in a way that will be out of step.

  282. We know this,

  283. but in areas of sexuality and gender,

  284. our understanding of what humans are

  285. and how they're created by God,

  286. how they're affected in their created goodness,

  287. in their fallen brokenness,

  288. and in their potential for redemption and glory.

  289. We are out of step with a world

  290. that will tell us different things

  291. about how we can be self-determinative

  292. in these things.

  293. Religious tolerance is something

  294. that increasingly has boundaries.

  295. We have religious tolerance for tolerant people,

  296. but we have religious intolerance

  297. for people who hold to beliefs that are exclusive.

  298. And friends, we believe in exclusive gospel,

  299. not because we choose to be hateful to others,

  300. but because Christ alone has done

  301. the only thing that can save us.

  302. And even the most gentle and gracious

  303. and kind orthodoxy will be condemned

  304. and we will be called hated,

  305. hateful and bigoted and cruel and oppressive

  306. for our following of Christ.

  307. And we should expect that there will be times

  308. when we will be excluded,

  309. disrespected, marginalized,

  310. and discriminated against

  311. because we follow Christ.

  312. We need to avoid a culture war mentality.

  313. We need to not see that there's an enemy

  314. that we have to win the culture war

  315. in our world,

  316. but we are to hold the truth of God

  317. with humility and grace

  318. and belief and practice.

  319. We are to love our enemies

  320. and we are to fight to live

  321. as citizens of a kingdom

  322. that is unshakable

  323. and cannot be broken

  324. in the midst of a world

  325. that is increasingly

  326. going to be difficult to live in.

  327. So Peter says,

  328. let us not be ashamed of the gospel.

  329. Why?

  330. Because he says,

  331. you are blessed.

  332. You are blessed by God

  333. in the midst of this persecution.

  334. This is what Jesus said

  335. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  336. Blessed are those

  337. who are persecuted

  338. for righteousness' sake,

  339. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  340. Blessed are you

  341. when others revile you

  342. and persecute you

  343. and utter all kinds of evil

  344. against you falsely.

  345. On my account,

  346. rejoice and be glad,

  347. for your reward is great in heaven.

  348. For so they persecuted the prophets

  349. who were before you.

  350. God looks at you

  351. as one walking in Christ

  352. and suffering for Christ

  353. and says,

  354. you are blessed.

  355. And how do we know that?

  356. Because he pronounces your favor,

  357. his favor on you publicly

  358. because you have,

  359. this is what the end of verse 16 says,

  360. because you have

  361. the spirit of glory

  362. and of God

  363. resting upon you.

  364. You see, friends,

  365. we might feel ashamed

  366. like we're doing something wrong

  367. when we suffer persecution,

  368. but God looks at us

  369. and says,

  370. as you suffer persecution

  371. and as you stand firm

  372. in humility and steadfastness,

  373. you are proving

  374. that the spirit of God

  375. is on you

  376. and you are displaying

  377. the spirit of the gospel

  378. and of Christ

  379. in the world.

  380. And he looks at you

  381. and he says,

  382. this suffering

  383. is revealing to the world

  384. what I have already done,

  385. which is I have pronounced upon you

  386. a blessing

  387. by giving you the spirit

  388. by virtue of your faith

  389. in Christ.

  390. This is what verse 16 says.

  391. Karen Jobes,

  392. this commentator,

  393. we keep quoting

  394. because her commentator

  395. is really excellent

  396. on 1 Peter,

  397. notes that the suffering here

  398. is not productive.

  399. Sometimes we want to say

  400. our suffering

  401. and our persecution,

  402. they're only worth it

  403. when we can see

  404. what good it produces.

  405. But here,

  406. Peter's not saying

  407. the suffering here

  408. doesn't produce the blessing.

  409. The suffering

  410. simply reveals it.

  411. The suffering

  412. is a testing fire

  413. that shows

  414. what is really there.

  415. Friends,

  416. this is what

  417. Helen Rosevear found.

  418. If you don't know

  419. Helen Rosevear's story,

  420. you should.

  421. She was a missionary

  422. in the 20th century.

  423. She went to

  424. Central Africa,

  425. to the Congo,

  426. to serve as a medical missionary.

  427. She suffered deeply

  428. as a missionary.

  429. In the midst of civil war

  430. and the Simba rebellion,

  431. she was imprisoned,

  432. she was beaten,

  433. she was raped,

  434. she suffered immeasurably.

  435. And in the midst

  436. of her

  437. faithful service

  438. and seeking God

  439. in the midst of her

  440. terrible,

  441. terrible circumstances,

  442. as she reflects back

  443. on that season in life,

  444. she writes this.

  445. One word became

  446. unbelievably clear,

  447. and that word was

  448. privilege.

  449. privilege.

  450. He didn't take away

  451. pain or cruelty

  452. or humiliation.

  453. No,

  454. it was all there.

  455. But now it was

  456. altogether different.

  457. It was with him,

  458. for him,

  459. in him.

  460. he was actually

  461. offering me

  462. the inestimable

  463. privilege

  464. of sharing

  465. in some little way

  466. the edge

  467. of the fellowship

  468. of his suffering.

  469. Friends,

  470. this is what it means

  471. to have the glory

  472. of God revealed

  473. in a believer

  474. who stands firm,

  475. who is not ashamed

  476. in the midst of,

  477. but who knows

  478. that they are blessed

  479. because the Spirit

  480. of God resides

  481. in them

  482. because they can see

  483. this.

  484. Suffering is an opportunity

  485. for fellowship

  486. with Christ.

  487. So persecution

  488. brings not surprise,

  489. but joy.

  490. Brings not shame,

  491. but blessing.

  492. And finally,

  493. verses 17 through 19,

  494. persecution brings

  495. not fear

  496. of condemnation,

  497. but confident faith.

  498. So I don't know

  499. if you felt it

  500. when we read through it,

  501. but verses 17 through 19

  502. strike me

  503. as you read through

  504. the logic of this

  505. as a bit of a non sequitur.

  506. What is he doing here?

  507. He's talking about

  508. suffering for Christ.

  509. He's encouraging

  510. the believers.

  511. This all makes sense.

  512. And then verse 17,

  513. he says,

  514. for it is time

  515. for judgment

  516. to begin

  517. at the household of God.

  518. And if it is

  519. to begin with us,

  520. what will be the outcome

  521. of those who do not obey?

  522. And why does he turn to this?

  523. Why does he turn to judgment?

  524. And I think that

  525. to get this right,

  526. I think Peter may be

  527. using judgment

  528. in a slightly different way

  529. than we usually think of it.

  530. Usually we think of judgment

  531. as condemnation.

  532. We think of judgment

  533. as bringing punishment.

  534. And so it often is

  535. in the New Testament.

  536. It means that judgment is,

  537. and for believers,

  538. it can be judgment

  539. that comes to refine people

  540. so that they might be purified

  541. of their sin.

  542. There's a final judgment

  543. on the whole world

  544. where there will be

  545. a final reckoning

  546. and accounting

  547. for our standing

  548. before God

  549. and where God

  550. will vindicate

  551. the righteous

  552. and where he will condemn

  553. and punish evildoers.

  554. But it doesn't seem like

  555. this is the sense

  556. of judgment here.

  557. because there's no sense

  558. of Peter saying,

  559. hey, you guys are falling short

  560. in holiness

  561. and you need to grow in this.

  562. And there's no sense

  563. that Peter's saying,

  564. hey, there's a final judgment

  565. that's going to come,

  566. so hold on for that

  567. because in verse 17 it says,

  568. for the time is now

  569. that this judgment is happening.

  570. So what is Peter talking about?

  571. Peter's talking about

  572. the persecution

  573. that the church is suffering now,

  574. not as a condemnation

  575. on the church,

  576. but as a test.

  577. This is what we saw

  578. in verse 12

  579. and I think he's coming back

  580. to this idea.

  581. A test in God's hand

  582. that is a trial

  583. that as we stand firm

  584. through it,

  585. we see

  586. and what God sees

  587. is who are truly

  588. his people.

  589. So judgment here

  590. is not the condemnation,

  591. but it's rendering a verdict,

  592. whether good or bad.

  593. And then he explains

  594. that the verdict

  595. could be good or bad.

  596. Right?

  597. For judgment,

  598. that is this testing,

  599. starts with the house of God.

  600. God comes

  601. and through this fiery trial

  602. that's happening now

  603. of persecution,

  604. the true church

  605. is being revealed.

  606. Those who are

  607. falsely claiming Christ

  608. or those who are

  609. saying they want

  610. to follow Christ,

  611. but only when it is easy

  612. and when it doesn't

  613. include suffering,

  614. those people are winnowed

  615. out of the church.

  616. Yes, that's a true thing.

  617. And so the church,

  618. the true church

  619. will be revealed

  620. in its glory.

  621. Peter says,

  622. well, if that's what's happening

  623. with those who know Christ,

  624. what about those who don't?

  625. When he says

  626. those who do not obey

  627. the gospel of God,

  628. this is a different language

  629. for saying

  630. for those who have not

  631. put their faith in Christ.

  632. It's going to happen

  633. and those who are in Christ

  634. are going to be preserved,

  635. then the message

  636. for those who are not

  637. in Christ

  638. is a fearsome one.

  639. And the persecution

  640. that the church

  641. is feeling now

  642. is of a piece

  643. of that final judgment

  644. that will come

  645. and that final verdict

  646. that will come

  647. upon all people.

  648. This is why he quotes

  649. Psalm 11, 31,

  650. if the righteous

  651. are scarcely saved,

  652. that is,

  653. if the righteous

  654. are saved

  655. through a great trial,

  656. what will become

  657. of the ungodly

  658. and the sinner?

  659. That is,

  660. those who don't know God

  661. and don't care about God.

  662. The great sorting

  663. of humanity

  664. is prefigured

  665. in persecution.

  666. Who will endure

  667. and stand to the end

  668. and who will not?

  669. If those who claim Christ

  670. may waver and fall,

  671. what about others?

  672. Without Christ,

  673. when we face God's trial

  674. and his judgment,

  675. there is condemnation

  676. for sin.

  677. God's wrath

  678. is poured out.

  679. There will be

  680. an eternal punishment

  681. for those

  682. who are outside

  683. of Christ

  684. because a holy God

  685. cannot suffer

  686. to overlook sin.

  687. And only in Christ,

  688. only in Christ,

  689. has those sins

  690. been dealt with

  691. and taken away.

  692. with the gospel,

  693. there is hope

  694. to persevere.

  695. Without the gospel,

  696. there is only

  697. condemnation

  698. and fear

  699. and death

  700. for all people

  701. at all times

  702. who do not know Christ.

  703. This is why Peter

  704. ends with this exhortation

  705. in verse 19.

  706. Therefore,

  707. let those who suffer

  708. according to God's will

  709. entrust their souls

  710. to a faithful creator

  711. while doing good.

  712. He's saying,

  713. friends,

  714. I know that there's

  715. a fiery trial.

  716. You're either in it

  717. or it's about to come.

  718. Don't be surprised.

  719. Don't be ashamed.

  720. Don't be afraid.

  721. But entrust yourself

  722. like a little child

  723. who runs

  724. to his daddy's arms

  725. and who's enveloped

  726. by the grace

  727. of the gospel

  728. and protected

  729. from all the harm

  730. and all the trial

  731. and all the hardship,

  732. all the condemnation,

  733. all the attack

  734. on them

  735. from the outside.

  736. So we run to Christ

  737. and trust ourselves

  738. to our creator

  739. who knows us

  740. and what he's made us for.

  741. We run to this one

  742. and find in him

  743. refuge

  744. and strength.

  745. And as we entrust ourselves,

  746. not trusting in our own ability

  747. to manage

  748. or to navigate

  749. or to take care of ourselves,

  750. but to give ourselves over

  751. to him

  752. and to his purposes

  753. in our lives,

  754. this is how we endure

  755. suffering.

  756. This,

  757. it's with these attitudes

  758. that we are able

  759. to face the fiery trials

  760. of living as aliens

  761. and strangers

  762. in a world

  763. that does not know us.

  764. Friends,

  765. we do this

  766. because we know Christ.

  767. We are able to do this

  768. because Christ

  769. is our treasure.

  770. and in Christ

  771. we find joy

  772. and blessing

  773. and hope.

  774. We find a place

  775. of refuge

  776. where we can hide ourselves,

  777. where we can be

  778. what Peter

  779. exhorts us to be.

  780. And friends,

  781. if we're here this morning

  782. and we don't know Christ yet,

  783. or we're not sure

  784. how we stand with Christ,

  785. if we are wondering

  786. whether Christ is worth it,

  787. if the cost may be too high,

  788. if the suffering

  789. may be too hard,

  790. this word has

  791. a warning for us as well.

  792. There is no hope

  793. outside of Christ

  794. and the hard things

  795. and the trials

  796. that are facing,

  797. that you may be facing now

  798. are nothing compared

  799. to the final judgment

  800. when you will stand

  801. before God.

  802. And Peter would implore you,

  803. turn to Christ,

  804. put your hope in him,

  805. put your trust

  806. in him today.

  807. And then you will be able

  808. to endure

  809. these fiery trials.

  810. Let's pray.

  811. Lord, we thank you

  812. this morning.

  813. We thank you this morning

  814. for this word,

  815. Lord,

  816. that

  817. Lord,

  818. is meant to encourage us

  819. to give us strength

  820. in our inner being.

  821. Lord,

  822. we know that

  823. when you called us

  824. to yourself,

  825. you called us

  826. out of this world

  827. and that

  828. as long as we live

  829. on this earth

  830. as your people,

  831. we will feel

  832. like aliens

  833. and strangers,

  834. like exiles

  835. whose home

  836. is somewhere else.

  837. Lord,

  838. we pray

  839. you would give us

  840. endurance

  841. and patience

  842. and steadfastness

  843. to embrace this life.

  844. And Lord,

  845. when we do

  846. suffer persecution,

  847. when we do

  848. suffer for Christ's sake,

  849. Lord,

  850. we pray

  851. that you might bring us

  852. the joy,

  853. the confidence,

  854. the blessing.

  855. Lord,

  856. that our faith

  857. may be tested

  858. and found

  859. to be true.

  860. Lord,

  861. the faith

  862. that you have given us

  863. and so we might

  864. stand firm.

  865. Thank you,

  866. Lord.

  867. We pray in Jesus' name.

  868. Amen.
