  1. Well, good morning, church. Would you turn with me back to Isaiah chapter 40? Again, that's page 561

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  2. in the Pew Bible. We're starting a new sermon series today that will take us through the rest

  3. of the summer. Now, if you've been at Trinity for a while, you typically know that on Sundays

  4. we pick a book of the Bible or a section of a book, and then we preach through it in order.

  5. And we do this kind of preaching, expository preaching, because we believe that the Bible

  6. is God's Word. And when we listen deeply to Scripture, God speaks to accomplish all of

  7. His purposes in us and through us for His glory. Now, this summer we'll be looking at a section

  8. of Isaiah that starts in chapter 40 and ends in chapter 55. Historically, Isaiah wrote these

  9. chapters in the 8th century B.C., when the people of Judah had just seen their northern neighbors

  10. conquered by the Assyrians, and when they themselves had just received the warning that

  11. captivity was coming for them too. We see this at the end of Isaiah chapter 39 in verse 6. One day,

    Isaiah 39 chapter mention

  12. not Assyria, but the kingdom of Babylon would come and carry them off into exile. The nation was

  13. conquered in that way. There typically was no coming back. That was the end.

  14. So what message does God give to Isaiah to speak into the future for His conquered people?

  15. After judgment comes, after exile comes, when the people are defeated and humiliated,

  16. when they're weary under sin and suffering, what does God have to say?

  17. Well, chapter 40 begins that message, and it begins by speaking to a people whose hearts are weary.

  18. We'll find at the end of the chapter that the people have grown exhausted. They're despondent.

  19. They're tired. They're worn out. They're weary of their own sin, and they're weary of the suffering

  20. of the world. What will God say to His weary people?

  21. Perhaps you're feeling a bit weary this morning. Weary perhaps because of trials, or weary perhaps

  22. because of ongoing struggles with sin. Perhaps you've come with a desire for renewal, for fresh

  23. strength, for fresh wind in your spiritual sails. And maybe you sense this desire not just personally,

  24. but corporately. You know, every church will go through seasons when we need to be refreshed,

  25. when our weary souls need to be strengthened, when it feels like our arms are drooping and our strength

  26. is waning. Well, if that's what you're feeling this morning, then Isaiah 40 is for you. It's for us.

  27. Now, chapter 40 has three parts, and we'll look at all three in order. But the main message of

  28. Isaiah 40 that pulls it all together is found right in verse 1 that we read earlier in the service.

  29. To the weary in heart, God speaks good news, and it's a good news of what? It's a good news of comfort.

  30. And comfort here means more than just kind of soothing. Comfort in the Bible means strengthening.

  31. It means building up. It means renewing. This is the kind of comfort that comes when the general

  32. returns from battle returns from battle and announces that the war has been won. This is the kind of

  33. comfort that comes when the parent returns from searching and announces that the lost child has come

  34. home. This is biblical comfort. It's strength. It's renewal for the weary soul. And like I said,

  35. this message of comfort comes in three parts. In verses 1 through 11, what we hear is a promise

  36. of comfort. And then in verses 12 through 26, we'll see the proof of that comfort. And then in verses 27

  37. through 31, we'll take a look at the imparting, the imparting of that comfort. So let me pray,

  38. and then we'll take a look at these three things together. Pray with me as we come to God's Word.

  39. Father, as we turn to your Word now, we ask humbly and expectantly, we ask that you would speak to us

  40. the word that we need to hear. God, on this send-off Sunday when many in our community are celebrating

  41. commencements of various kinds, we pray that you would revive us today by the Spirit of your Son,

  42. our Lord Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen. So first then, in verses 1 through 11, we hear the promise

  43. of comfort. We read these verses earlier in the service, so I won't read them all again, but look

  44. down with me at verses 1 through 11. Verses 1 and 2 announce this message of comfort. God here is

  45. recommissioning Isaiah to speak a fresh word to the people, and it's a twofold word. First, that their

  46. warfare, that their hardship, that their captivity is coming to an end, which would have been utterly

  47. unheard of in the ancient world. We're going to be brought back from exile? But second, and even more

  48. wonderfully, it's a message that their iniquity is pardoned. Because the question before the people

  49. of Israel wasn't just, will God deliver us from our political and material exile? It wasn't just,

  50. is God going to reestablish us back in our land much deeper? The question was whether God would atone for

  51. their sins. Would he cure the much deeper disease that separated them from their God in the first place?

  52. And verses 1 through 11 say, yes, God's comfort will come. Not just liberation, but also wonder of wonders,

  53. pardon for sin. From the Lord's hand, Isaiah says, that is out of God's own initiative, they would receive

  54. double, that is exactly what they need, and even more than enough to cover their sins and bring them home.

  55. And then after this opening declaration of comfort, there are three voices that ring out in the rest of

  56. this section. Three promises of comfort to weary and despondent hearts, to hearts that are downtrodden

  57. in sin and suffering. These three voices come. And the first voice, if you look at verses 3 through 5,

  58. this first voice promises that the glory of God, that is the Lord's presence, is coming to your rescue.

  59. And nothing will stand in God's way. Valleys will be lifted up, mountains made low, uneven ground will

  60. be made level, rough places will be made smooth as a plain. In other words, God will clear every obstacle

  61. and he will come. And all flesh, people from every nation will see it, not just observe it, but experience

  62. it. And then a second voice comes in verses 6 through 8. And this voice reminds us that we're

  63. fickle and we're frail. Even our best efforts, our greatest glory is like grass. It fades.

  64. And if God's Spirit were to come, if the mighty wind of his presence were to move among us

  65. in our frailty, in our fickleness, what would be the result?

  66. Surely we would turn back to dust.

  67. Ah, but here's the promise of the second voice. We are fickle, but God is faithful.

  68. God's word stands forever. He's faithful to all of his promises, even though we are not.

  69. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever, the second voice says.

  70. And then the third voice comes in verses 9 through 11, and it comes with good news. A gospel of glad

  71. tidings, a word not just for Jerusalem, but for all the cities near and far. And what is this good news?

  72. Good news that when the Lord comes in might, when he comes to fulfill his promises,

  73. his mighty ruling arm that we see in verse 10 will become his merciful carrying arm of verse 11.

  74. Here is good news that the mighty God, the strong one, is also our shepherd. He will come in mercy.

  75. He will gather the lambs in his arms. He will carry them in his bosom and gently lead those that are with young.

  76. So friends, let this speak to your weary soul.

  77. Do you doubt if God is willing to come and comfort you today, to strengthen you?

  78. Do you doubt if God is willing to come and renew our church and breathe fresh life into us?

  79. Listen to these voices from Isaiah.

  80. You know, our weary hearts will often say the circumstances are too hard or too challenging.

  81. The valley is too deep. The path is too rough. But listen,

  82. God says he's willing to move heaven and earth to come to us.

  83. Our weary hearts will say, but our faithfulness is too frail.

  84. We don't deserve God's comfort. We're like flowers, beautiful one day, but barren the next.

  85. But listen, God is willing to be true, to be faithful, even when you are not.

  86. His word will stand even if every word of yours falls to the ground.

  87. Our weary hearts say, but God must not care for us.

  88. We're like sheep who've gone astray.

  89. But listen, God is willing to take his mighty arms and gather you up like a shepherd carrying a lamb.

  90. There can be no doubt that God is willing to comfort his weary people.

  91. That's the promise of verses 1 through 11.

  92. But this, of course, raises another question, doesn't it?

  93. Our weary hearts may hear that God is willing to comfort us, to come, to forgive, to restore,

  94. but then a second doubt starts to creep in.

  95. Perhaps God is willing, but is he able?

  96. He may have the desire to comfort, but does he in fact have the power to do so?

  97. We hear this promise of comfort, but what proof do we have that it will come true?

  98. What makes this more than just empty words?

  99. Well, this brings us to the second part of Isaiah 40.

  100. In verses 1 through 11, we hear the promise of comfort,

  101. but then in verses 12 through 26, we hear the proof of this comfort.

  102. What is it that makes these promises of comfort more than just empty words?

  103. Well, because these promises are not the idle chatter of a mere creature

  104. or the mute oracles of a false God.

  105. These are the promises of the one true God, the creator of heaven and earth.

  106. God steps forth and says here,

  107. I am the proof of my promises.

  108. Listen to these verses as I read them, Isaiah 40, 12 through 26.

  109. God says,

  110. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand

  111. and marked off the heavens with a span,

  112. enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure,

  113. and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?

  114. Who has measured the spirit of the Lord, or what man shows him counsel?

  115. Whom did he consult and whom made him understand?

  116. Who taught him the path of justice and taught him knowledge

  117. and showed him the way of understanding?

  118. And of course, you get the implied answer there, right?

  119. No one.

  120. Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket

  121. and are accounted as the dust on the scales.

  122. Behold, he takes up the coastlands like fine dust.

  123. Lebanon would not suffice for fuel,

  124. nor are its beasts enough for a burnt offering.

  125. All the nations, there is nothing before him.

  126. They are accounted by him,

  127. or we might say they are accounted before him

  128. in comparison to him as less than nothing, an emptiness.

  129. To whom then will you liken God?

  130. Or what likeness compare with him?

  131. An idol?

  132. A craftsman casts it,

  133. and a goldsmith overlays it with gold

  134. and casts for its silver chains.

  135. He who is too impoverished for an offering

  136. chooses wood that will not rot.

  137. He seeks out a craftsman, a skillful craftsman,

  138. to set up an idol that will not move.

  139. Do you not know?

  140. Do you not hear?

  141. Has it not been told you from the beginning?

  142. Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?

  143. It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,

  144. and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers.

  145. He who stretches out the heavens like a curtain

  146. and spread them like a tent to dwell in,

  147. who brings princes to nothing

  148. and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.

  149. Scarcely are they planted,

  150. scarcely sown,

  151. scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth

  152. when he blows on them,

  153. and they wither,

  154. and the tempest carries them off like stubble.

  155. To whom then will you compare me

  156. that I should be like him,

  157. says the Holy One.

  158. Lift up your eyes on high

  159. and see

  160. who created these,

  161. who brings out their host by number,

  162. calling them all by name,

  163. by the greatness of his might,

  164. and because he is strong in power,

  165. not one is missing.

  166. You know, perhaps one of the greatest dangers

  167. in the church today

  168. is that our view of God

  169. is much, much too small.

  170. We say that we believe in God,

  171. we say that he created all things,

  172. but we don't really believe it.

  173. The majesty of God,

  174. the immensity of God,

  175. the incomparable holiness of God

  176. is lost on us.

  177. We look to the idols of our age,

  178. success and personal freedom,

  179. or cultural approval,

  180. and they all look so desirable

  181. and so important.

  182. They're so big in our eyes

  183. and in our hearts,

  184. and yet Isaiah says in verses 19 through 20,

  185. it's all just wood and metal.

  186. It can't speak,

  187. it can't move,

  188. and it surely can't save.

  189. Let God be big,

  190. and those things be small.

  191. Consider the oceans,

  192. Isaiah says.

  193. Vast and powerful.

  194. Go stand on the shore of the ocean

  195. and feel how small you are

  196. before the waves and the deeps.

  197. But now consider

  198. all those oceans,

  199. all those deeps,

  200. wave upon wave.

  201. Creatures we can't imagine,

  202. of size and power

  203. that seem unfathomable.

  204. God measures those waters

  205. in the hollow of his hand.

  206. Like you or I would scoop up

  207. a drop of water from the sink,

  208. so are all the oceans

  209. to God,

  210. the creator.

  211. And now think of the nations,

  212. all the power

  213. and glory

  214. and culture.

  215. We could spend a whole lifetime

  216. traveling,

  217. discovering,

  218. and learning,

  219. and still not scratch

  220. the surface

  221. of all the diversity

  222. and wonder

  223. of human cultures

  224. and nations,

  225. couldn't we?

  226. But compared to God,

  227. it's like dust

  228. on the scales.

  229. Isaiah isn't saying

  230. that God doesn't care

  231. for humanity.

  232. God indeed does care.

  233. Isaiah's point,

  234. rather,

  235. is one of comparison.

  236. The nations are like dust

  237. compared to God.

  238. They don't even move

  239. the scales.

  240. They're weightless,

  241. fleeting,

  242. gone in a moment.

  243. But God,

  244. he is all substance,

  245. wisdom,

  246. permanence,

  247. power,

  248. beauty.

  249. Is this the God

  250. you believe in,

  251. friend?

  252. Utterly beyond compare?

  253. Utterly holy?

  254. The maker of heaven

  255. and earth?

  256. Or do we worship

  257. a mere idol?

  258. There's only one God

  259. and the Lord

  260. is his name.

  261. And if that is the God

  262. you say you believe in,

  263. then go out.

  264. Go out on a dark,

  265. clear night,

  266. Isaiah says in verse 26.

  267. Go out on a dark,

  268. clear night

  269. and lift up your eyes.

  270. Look at the vast array

  271. of stars,

  272. millions upon millions

  273. and millions more

  274. that you will never see

  275. and never know.

  276. Consider,

  277. Isaiah says,

  278. that your God

  279. has arranged them all.

  280. We could never count them,

  281. let alone catalog them,

  282. but God has called them

  283. all by name.

  284. Every star

  285. and every galaxy

  286. into the vast stretches

  287. of the universe,

  288. God has named them all.

  289. And in his might

  290. and in his power,

  291. not one is missing.

  292. If your heart is weary,

  293. Isaiah says,

  294. if you doubt his ability,

  295. his power to save,

  296. go look at the stars.

  297. And then as you stand in awe,

  298. overwhelmed by their number

  299. and beauty,

  300. consider

  301. the God who made them all

  302. and who named them all

  303. has made you.

  304. What are we to think

  305. in the face

  306. of God's transcendence

  307. and majesty?

  308. Are we to think

  309. that he is too great

  310. to care?

  311. No,

  312. Isaiah says.

  313. Rather,

  314. we must understand

  315. that God

  316. is too great

  317. to fail.

  318. Not one is missing.

  319. And if that is true

  320. of the stars,

  321. friends,

  322. how much more true

  323. of you.

  324. How much more true

  325. of his people

  326. he's called by name

  327. and chosen

  328. from before

  329. the foundation

  330. of the earth.

  331. You are not

  332. just the product.

  333. Friends,

  334. you and I,

  335. you and I

  336. are not just

  337. the product

  338. of dust

  339. and stars

  340. and time.

  341. You bear

  342. the very image

  343. of God.

  344. What good news!

  345. And though your sin

  346. has brought great ruin

  347. and great judgment,

  348. it has not thwarted

  349. God's willingness

  350. nor God's ability

  351. to save.

  352. comfort.

  353. The one who promises

  354. comfort

  355. is himself

  356. the proof

  357. that those promises

  358. are sure.

  359. And so,

  360. from promise

  361. to proof,

  362. Isaiah now brings

  363. it all home.

  364. In verses 27

  365. through 31,

  366. we have the impartation

  367. of this comfort.

  368. Look with me

  369. at verse 27.

  370. Let me read

  371. verses 27

  372. through 31.

  373. Why do you say,

  374. O Jacob,

  375. and speak,

  376. O Israel?

  377. My way

  378. is hidden

  379. from the Lord

  380. and my right

  381. is disregarded

  382. by my God.

  383. Have you not

  384. known?

  385. Have you not

  386. heard?

  387. The Lord

  388. is the everlasting

  389. God,

  390. the creator

  391. of the ends

  392. of the earth.

  393. He does not

  394. faint or grow weary.

  395. His understanding

  396. is unsearchable.

  397. He gives power

  398. to the faint

  399. and to him

  400. who has no might

  401. he increases strength.

  402. Even youth

  403. shall faint

  404. and be weary

  405. and young men

  406. shall fall exhausted.

  407. But they who wait

  408. for the Lord

  409. shall renew

  410. their strength.

  411. They shall mount

  412. up with wings

  413. like eagles.

  414. They shall run

  415. and not be weary.

  416. They shall walk

  417. and not faint.

  418. You can hear

  419. in verse 27,

  420. can't you,

  421. this cry

  422. of the weary heart.

  423. This cry

  424. that says,

  425. God must not

  426. see me.

  427. God doesn't

  428. see me

  429. and God

  430. doesn't answer me.

  431. He must be

  432. unwilling

  433. or unable

  434. to truly comfort,

  435. to truly save.

  436. Perhaps we're

  437. beyond saving,

  438. beyond.

  439. But no,

  440. God says,

  441. have you not

  442. known?

  443. Have you not

  444. heard?

  445. God is the

  446. eternal

  447. creator,

  448. all wise

  449. and unwearying.

  450. The wonder

  451. of wonders,

  452. this eternal,

  453. all wise,

  454. all powerful

  455. creator

  456. gives.

  457. It is in his

  458. nature not just

  459. to be strong,

  460. but to give

  461. strength.

  462. Look again

  463. at verse 29.

  464. He gives

  465. power

  466. to the faint

  467. and to him

  468. who has no

  469. might,

  470. he increases

  471. strength.

  472. God

  473. gives.

  474. But how?

  475. How does it

  476. come to us?

  477. How does God

  478. give this

  479. strength to

  480. the weary?

  481. Well,

  482. from the

  483. perspective of

  484. the New Testament,

  485. we see this

  486. more clearly

  487. than Isaiah

  488. or the exiled

  489. people of Judah

  490. could ever have

  491. seen.

  492. You know,

  493. when Matthew

  494. and Mark

  495. and Luke

  496. take up their

  497. pens to write

  498. the story of

  499. Jesus,

  500. where do they

  501. begin?

  502. Well,

  503. Matthew starts

  504. with a genealogy,

  505. you know,

  506. and Luke

  507. starts with an

  508. old priest

  509. in the temple,

  510. but for all

  511. three of them,

  512. when the story

  513. really gets going

  514. and John

  515. the Baptist

  516. appears on

  517. the scene

  518. as the herald

  519. of the great

  520. coming king,

  521. whose words

  522. do they

  523. quote?

  524. What Old

  525. Testament promise

  526. is being

  527. fulfilled,

  528. do they say?

  529. It's this

  530. one,

  531. Isaiah 40.

  532. A voice

  533. cries in the

  534. wilderness,

  535. prepare the

  536. way of the

  537. Lord.

  538. It's Isaiah's

  539. message of

  540. comfort that

  541. rings out

  542. when the

  543. Messiah comes.

  544. The

  545. redemptive

  546. ages turn,

  547. and the

  548. kingdom of

  549. God is

  550. finally at

  551. hand.

  552. And the

  553. New Testament

  554. writers say

  555. it's coming.

  556. The Lord

  557. is here,

  558. comforting

  559. his people.

  560. When the

  561. sovereign

  562. creator takes

  563. on flesh

  564. and moves

  565. heaven and

  566. earth to

  567. comfort his

  568. people,

  569. the real

  570. return from

  571. exile can

  572. begin.

  573. The real

  574. pardon for

  575. sins can

  576. be given.

  577. When the

  578. good shepherd

  579. takes us

  580. up into

  581. his arms

  582. and lays

  583. down his

  584. life for

  585. the sheep.

  586. When the

  587. double payment

  588. for sin is

  589. made,

  590. and when the

  591. stars go

  592. black as

  593. the Son of

  594. God hangs

  595. on a cross.

  596. Imagine,

  597. friends,

  598. the holy

  599. one,

  600. the sinless

  601. one,

  602. becomes

  603. sin so

  604. that sinners

  605. can be reckoned

  606. sinless.

  607. The creator

  608. becomes weak

  609. so the

  610. weak can

  611. become strong.

  612. God

  613. gives,

  614. which is to

  615. say he

  616. imparts this

  617. comfort,

  618. this strength

  619. by grace.

  620. If God's

  621. word is the

  622. promise and

  623. God's majesty

  624. the proof,

  625. then it is by

  626. God's free

  627. grace that it

  628. comes to us.

  629. And if it

  630. comes to us

  631. by grace,

  632. then we

  633. receive it,

  634. not by

  635. being strong,

  636. but by

  637. acknowledging our

  638. weakness.

  639. Look again at

  640. verse 29.

  641. God gives

  642. power.

  643. Who?

  644. Not to the

  645. strong,

  646. but to the

  647. faint.

  648. What about

  649. the strong?

  650. What about

  651. those who are

  652. in their

  653. prime?

  654. Well,

  655. look again at

  656. verse 30.

  657. Even youths

  658. shall faint

  659. and be weary,

  660. and young men

  661. shall fall

  662. exhausted.

  663. Now,

  664. if you're like

  665. me and you're

  666. starting to get

  667. over the hill,

  668. you think,

  669. I wouldn't

  670. mind for a

  671. little bit of

  672. that young

  673. man's strength,

  674. you know?

  675. Give me some

  676. more of that.

  677. And yet,

  678. Isaiah says,

  679. even the

  680. strength of the

  681. strongest will

  682. fail.

  683. Even the

  684. best earthly

  685. strength will

  686. not sustain

  687. you.

  688. So how do

  689. we get this

  690. different kind

  691. of strength?

  692. Verse 31,

  693. They who

  694. wait for the

  695. Lord shall

  696. renew their

  697. strength.

  698. They who

  699. wait for the

  700. Lord shall

  701. renew their

  702. strength.

  703. It's not

  704. in the

  705. working,

  706. but in the

  707. waiting,

  708. that renewal

  709. comes.

  710. Now,

  711. what does it

  712. mean to

  713. wait on the

  714. Lord?

  715. Well,

  716. that word

  717. wait here

  718. means to

  719. trust the

  720. Lord with

  721. patient

  722. expectation.

  723. In other

  724. words,

  725. it means to

  726. put your

  727. hope in

  728. Him.

  729. You know,

  730. too often we

  731. put our

  732. hope in

  733. our own

  734. ability,

  735. our own

  736. strength,

  737. our own

  738. strategies,

  739. but real

  740. strength comes

  741. when we

  742. stop hoping

  743. in ourselves

  744. and transfer

  745. our hope

  746. to the

  747. Lord.

  748. And too

  749. often we

  750. put our

  751. hope in

  752. new

  753. circumstances,

  754. a new

  755. relationship,

  756. a new

  757. job,

  758. maybe a

  759. new

  760. political

  761. leader,

  762. but none

  763. of these

  764. things will

  765. truly comfort

  766. or truly

  767. strengthen.

  768. Real

  769. strength

  770. comes,

  771. real

  772. renewal

  773. comes,

  774. when we

  775. wait,

  776. when we

  777. hope,

  778. in the

  779. Lord.

  780. This is

  781. fundamentally

  782. what it

  783. means to

  784. become a

  785. Christian,

  786. to transfer

  787. our hope,

  788. to transfer

  789. your hope,

  790. hope for the

  791. forgiveness of

  792. sins,

  793. hope for

  794. eternal life,

  795. hope for

  796. purpose,

  797. hope for

  798. meaning,

  799. to transfer

  800. our hope

  801. to Jesus

  802. Christ alone.

  803. And that's

  804. ultimately what it

  805. means to live

  806. as a Christian

  807. too,

  808. to hope

  809. in him

  810. alone.

  811. Is it

  812. weakness

  813. to hope

  814. in the

  815. Lord,

  816. to wait

  817. on him

  818. rather than

  819. in our

  820. own

  821. strength?

  822. No,

  823. this is

  824. where true

  825. strength is

  826. found.

  827. Isaiah

  828. promises to

  829. all who

  830. will admit

  831. their

  832. weakness

  833. and wait

  834. on the

  835. Lord.

  836. He says

  837. they shall

  838. mount up

  839. with wings

  840. like eagles.

  841. They shall

  842. run and

  843. not be

  844. weary.

  845. They shall

  846. walk and

  847. not faint.

  848. Friends,

  849. here is

  850. comfort indeed.

  851. To know

  852. your sins

  853. are forgiven

  854. in Christ.

  855. To know

  856. of your

  857. adoption in

  858. God's family

  859. and heir

  860. of the

  861. coming kingdom.

  862. To know

  863. that it's

  864. secure.

  865. To know

  866. that everything

  867. in life

  868. will be for

  869. your ultimate

  870. good and

  871. God's ultimate

  872. glory.

  873. Here is

  874. strength and

  875. comfort like

  876. nothing else.

  877. strength.

  878. And it's

  879. a fresh

  880. strength,

  881. Isaiah

  882. says.

  883. Your

  884. strength

  885. will be

  886. renewed,

  887. refreshed.

  888. And he

  889. says it's

  890. going to

  891. be a

  892. different

  893. kind of

  894. strength.

  895. Isaiah

  896. says you're

  897. going to

  898. mount up

  899. with wings

  900. like eagles.

  901. It will

  902. be nothing

  903. like you've

  904. experienced

  905. before.

  906. But it

  907. will also

  908. be a

  909. divine

  910. strength.

  911. Isaiah

  912. says you

  913. won't be

  914. weary and

  915. you will

  916. not faint.

  917. Which is

  918. what Isaiah

  919. said of

  920. God's own

  921. strength in

  922. verse 28.

  923. But notice

  924. something else

  925. in verse 31.

  926. Notice how

  927. Isaiah's

  928. metaphors here,

  929. they go from

  930. flying to

  931. running to

  932. walking.

  933. The movement

  934. of these

  935. metaphors is

  936. what?

  937. It's slowing

  938. down, isn't

  939. it?

  940. As we

  941. continue to

  942. live the

  943. Christian life,

  944. as we grow

  945. older, we

  946. may find

  947. ourselves slowing

  948. down from an

  949. earthly perspective.

  950. we used to

  951. fly, we

  952. used to

  953. run, now

  954. we just

  955. walk.

  956. But notice

  957. though we

  958. may slow

  959. down, God's

  960. provision of

  961. strength is as

  962. strong as

  963. ever.

  964. Even if you

  965. don't soar like

  966. an eagle anymore,

  967. you'll still run

  968. and not be

  969. weary.

  970. Even if you

  971. don't run like

  972. you used to,

  973. you will still

  974. walk and not

  975. be faint.

  976. And even

  977. when walking

  978. is no longer

  979. possible, and

  980. you lie down

  981. for perhaps

  982. the last

  983. time, and

  984. the Lord

  985. calls you

  986. home, even

  987. then his

  988. strength will

  989. be sufficient

  990. for you.

  991. His power

  992. will be made

  993. perfect in

  994. your weakness.

  995. And even in

  996. death, friends,

  997. his comfort

  998. will be

  999. sufficient to

  1000. uphold you

  1001. through those

  1002. waters and to

  1003. usher you into

  1004. the presence of

  1005. your Savior

  1006. forever.

  1007. The grass

  1008. withers, the

  1009. flowers fall,

  1010. but the word

  1011. of our God

  1012. will stand

  1013. forever.

  1014. in the

  1015. 16th century,

  1016. in the

  1017. heart of the

  1018. Reformation,

  1019. the authors

  1020. of the

  1021. Heidelberg

  1022. Catechism

  1023. began their

  1024. great tool

  1025. of instruction

  1026. with this

  1027. question.

  1028. They said,

  1029. what is your

  1030. only comfort

  1031. in life

  1032. and in

  1033. death?

  1034. We don't

  1035. start catechisms

  1036. that way

  1037. anymore.

  1038. You know,

  1039. if you put

  1040. your kids

  1041. in children's

  1042. ministry,

  1043. we're not

  1044. going to

  1045. say,

  1046. what is your

  1047. only comfort

  1048. in life

  1049. and in

  1050. death?

  1051. We probably

  1052. should,

  1053. though,

  1054. right?

  1055. What is your

  1056. only comfort

  1057. in life

  1058. and in

  1059. death?

  1060. And here

  1061. was the

  1062. answer they

  1063. gave,

  1064. that I'm

  1065. not my

  1066. own,

  1067. but belong

  1068. body and

  1069. soul in

  1070. life and

  1071. in death

  1072. to my

  1073. faithful Savior,

  1074. Jesus Christ.

  1075. He has

  1076. fully paid

  1077. for all my

  1078. sins with

  1079. his precious

  1080. blood and

  1081. has set me

  1082. free from

  1083. the tyranny

  1084. of the

  1085. devil.

  1086. He also

  1087. watches over

  1088. me in such

  1089. a way that

  1090. not a hair

  1091. can fall

  1092. from my

  1093. head without

  1094. the will of

  1095. my Father

  1096. in heaven.

  1097. In fact,

  1098. all things

  1099. must work

  1100. together for

  1101. my salvation

  1102. because I

  1103. belong to

  1104. him.

  1105. Christ,

  1106. by his

  1107. Holy Spirit,

  1108. assures me

  1109. of eternal

  1110. life and

  1111. makes me

  1112. wholeheartedly

  1113. willing and

  1114. ready from

  1115. now on to

  1116. live for

  1117. him.

  1118. Here is

  1119. comfort indeed,

  1120. friends.

  1121. Not just a

  1122. promise,

  1123. not just

  1124. proof,

  1125. but a real

  1126. imparting it

  1127. to us

  1128. through Jesus

  1129. Christ,

  1130. our Lord.

  1131. Lord,

  1132. let's pray

  1133. together.

  1134. Father,

  1135. as we

  1136. pause now

  1137. in these

  1138. quiet

  1139. moments,

  1140. our prayer

  1141. to you

  1142. is simple

  1143. and it's

  1144. profound.

  1145. Lord,

  1146. would you

  1147. come

  1148. and would

  1149. you comfort

  1150. us and

  1151. give us

  1152. strength?

  1153. Lord,

  1154. help us

  1155. to mount

  1156. up with

  1157. wings like

  1158. eagles.

  1159. Help us

  1160. to run

  1161. and not be

  1162. weary.

  1163. Help us

  1164. to walk

  1165. and not

  1166. faint.

  1167. Work in

  1168. us by

  1169. your Holy

  1170. Spirit this

  1171. preserving and

  1172. empowering

  1173. grace that

  1174. we might live

  1175. all of our

  1176. days for you

  1177. and the

  1178. strength that

  1179. you provide

  1180. and that

  1181. you would

  1182. get much

  1183. glory in

  1184. us and

  1185. through us,

  1186. God.

  1187. May we

  1188. say that

  1189. in our

  1190. weakness

  1191. then we

  1192. are strong

  1193. because of

  1194. you,

  1195. Jesus.

  1196. We pray in

  1197. your name.

  1198. Amen.

  1199. Amen.

  1200. Thank you.
