  1. Let me open us up in a word of prayer.

  2. Lord, we pray as we look to your word together,

  3. that by your spirit, you would build us each like living stones into a spiritual house,

  4. that you would receive all the honor, praise, and glory in this time together.

  5. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  6. Well, good morning. We are going to take a break from the mental health class,

  7. and today we're going to be talking about the temple.

  8. But perhaps if we understand this idea of temple, it might help our mental health a little bit.

  9. So have you ever noticed that temples are everywhere?

  10. We in our fallen nature are prone to setting up temples.

  11. Almost every man-made religion has a temple,

  12. from temple shrines worshiping pagan gods in meadows to the Mormon temple in Salt Lake City.

  13. During the French Revolution, atheists built places called Temples of Reason.

  14. Temples are everywhere.

  15. You know, the God of the Bible commanded his people to build him a temple too.

  16. And you know, this temple resembled some of the pagan temples found in the ancient Near East.

  17. Was this resemblance a coincidence?

  18. Is Israel taking their cue from the cult of the surrounding nations?

  19. No, I don't think so. I think it's the other way around.

  20. I think the surrounding nations were copying the true temple that God had established,

  21. which continued in Israel.

  22. And we'll see actually that pagan temples are copying the true temple that God established in the very beginning.

  23. And these pagan temples are marred, sin-distorted versions of something that was lost,

  24. that humans longed to return to.

  25. A true temple that existed at the beginning of time.

  26. A place where God dwelled with his people.

  27. And a place that every human longs to return to.

  28. Human beings are creatures of longing, aren't we?

  29. Augustine once said,

  30. Our hearts are restless until they find rest in you, O Lord.

  31. And human beings were created to worship in the true temple that God had created.

  32. So today we'll touch on this temple, beginning in Eden,

  33. to the temple at the end of history in Revelation.

  34. So this picture is from the ESV Study Bible.

  35. It might look familiar to you.

  36. So to begin, let's consider Jesus' words on the subject of temples.

  37. Throughout his ministry, Jesus made some pretty audacious claims.

  38. His statement about the temple was one of them.

  39. You recall after he cleansed the temple in John 2, picking up in verse 19,

  40. Jesus answered the Pharisees,

  41. Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

  42. The Jews then said,

  43. It has taken 46 years to build this temple,

  44. and will you raise it up in three days?

  45. But he was speaking by the temple of his body, as John said.

  46. Jesus declared that he is the temple.

  47. But no one understood what he meant.

  48. The Jews didn't understand.

  49. His disciples didn't understand what he meant.

  50. What did he mean?

  51. That Jesus is the temple.

  52. So to understand this,

  53. we'll need to consider a biblical theology of the temple in the Bible.

  54. So before jumping in, let's do a brief refresher.

  55. What is biblical theology?

  56. Is it all theology that's biblical?

  57. No, not quite.

  58. To put it simply,

  59. biblical theology studies the scripture's overall storyline

  60. and traces the development of themes from the beginning to the end.

  61. So as you read the Bible,

  62. you'll notice that various themes often begin dimly in Genesis,

  63. almost mysterious in the beginning.

  64. But as the story unfolds, the light gets brighter

  65. until it gives way to the true form of the reality.

  66. So it's like sketching something on paper.

  67. As time goes on, more and more lines are added

  68. through each book of the Bible,

  69. and the picture starts to come into view.

  70. And biblical theology sees the scripture

  71. as progressively, gradually painting one portrait.

  72. And this portrait is of Christ

  73. and what he would come to accomplish.

  74. So this begins dimly, right, in the beginning,

  75. and then gets brighter.

  76. The Jews didn't understand this.

  77. So remember, Jesus chided them in John 5, 39.

  78. Jesus says, you search the scriptures

  79. because you think that in them you have life,

  80. have eternal life,

  81. but it is they that bear witness about me.

  82. So the scriptures bear witness about Jesus

  83. from the beginning to the end.

  84. And the definition we gave last year

  85. when we did a series on biblical theology

  86. is it's a discipline of understanding

  87. how the diverse parts of the Bible,

  88. 66 books in total,

  89. fit together into one grand story centered on Christ.

  90. So today we'll consider the thread line of the temple,

  91. which will ultimately point us to Christ.

  92. So we'll have six points today,

  93. six points.

  94. The symbol,

  95. the garden,

  96. the temple completed,

  97. the temple expansion,

  98. the temple fulfiller,

  99. and then finally,

  100. the world encompassing temple

  101. in Revelation.

  102. The symbol,

  103. the garden,

  104. the temple completed,

  105. the temple expansion,

  106. the temple fulfiller,

  107. and then the world encompassing temple.

  108. So to understand the temple,

  109. we must begin

  110. with the tabernacle,

  111. the predecessor to the temple.

  112. The tabernacle was that mobile tent in Exodus.

  113. You recall,

  114. a portable house for the king.

  115. God rescued the people out of slavery

  116. in the drama of the 10 plagues

  117. and then the dramatic crossing of the Red Sea.

  118. And God powerfully delivered the people out of slavery

  119. with this mighty outstretched arm.

  120. And God crashed the waves of judgment

  121. onto Pharaoh and his army's heads.

  122. And with God's help,

  123. the people reached the other side,

  124. dry ground.

  125. God saved his people.

  126. And after this great work of salvation,

  127. it's then in Exodus

  128. that God begins to give specific directions

  129. on the tabernacle's design.

  130. The place where God would begin to dwell

  131. with the people in the promised land.

  132. So salvation leads to God dwelling

  133. with his people in Exodus.

  134. One amazing thing that God desires

  135. to dwell with his people, right?

  136. And the proportions of the king's house

  137. had to be exact.

  138. Strangely, in Exodus,

  139. God would give Moses precise instructions

  140. on how to design this tabernacle.

  141. In Exodus 39, verse 25,

    Exodus 39:25

  142. God even tells Moses

  143. how to build the utensils

  144. which the priests were responsible for.

  145. Verse 40 says,

  146. See that you make them

  147. according to the pattern

  148. shown you on the mountain.

  149. The smallest detail had to be followed.

  150. And God is emphatic about this.

  151. He says it over and over again.

  152. Look how much he repeats it.

  153. Exodus 26, 30,

  154. Then you shall erect the tabernacle

  155. according to the plan

  156. for that you were shown on the mountain.

  157. Exodus 27, verse 8,

    Exodus 27:8

  158. You shall make it hollow,

  159. the altar, with boards.

  160. As it has been shown you on the mountain,

  161. so shall it be made.

  162. Exodus 36, verse 1,

    Exodus 36:1

  163. Every craftsman whom the Lord

  164. has put skill and intelligence

  165. shall work in accordance

  166. with all the Lord has commanded.

  167. See a pattern.

  168. And finally, Exodus 39, verse 1,

    Exodus 39:1

  169. From the blue and purple

  170. and scarlet yarns

  171. they made finely woven garments

  172. for ministering in the holy place.

  173. They made the holy garments for Aaron

  174. as the Lord had commanded Moses.

  175. The Lord commands Moses

  176. to build the tabernacle

  177. and the priest's garments

  178. with exact specifications.

  179. And he repeats this over and over again.

  180. And the writer of Hebrews

  181. says this fact

  182. means the tabernacle

  183. symbolized something greater

  184. beyond itself.

  185. Listen to Hebrews 8, verse 5.

    Hebrews 8:5

  186. The place, that is the tabernacle,

  187. where they serve,

  188. is a copy and shadow

  189. of what is in heaven.

  190. This is why Moses was warned

  191. when he was about to build

  192. the tabernacle.

  193. See to it that you make everything

  194. according to the pattern

  195. shown you on the mountain.

  196. So the tabernacle was a symbol,

  197. a shadow,

  198. imaging a reality

  199. that existed in heaven.

  200. There was a copy

  201. and a shadow on earth

  202. and the true form of these realities

  203. existed in heaven,

  204. as the author of Hebrews says.

  205. So what was it a symbol of?

  206. Let's continue to look

  207. to find out

  208. what this tabernacle symbolized.

  209. The tabernacle

  210. will have two areas.

  211. The first section

  212. was called the holy place,

  213. which contained various items,

  214. the lampstand,

  215. the table,

  216. and the bread of presence.

  217. And in the innermost section

  218. was the holy of holies.

  219. The holy of holies

  220. was the throne room of the king.

  221. It was shaped like a perfect cube.

  222. 20 by 20 by 20 cubits,

  223. which is an important detail

  224. we'll come back to.

  225. It was shaped as a perfect cube.

  226. And everything inside

  227. was inlaid with gold.

  228. It was unspeakably glorious.

  229. And even the cherubim,

  230. these heavenly creatures

  231. without sin,

  232. could not look directly

  233. upon the king

  234. in his all-consuming,

  235. incomprehensible holiness.

  236. At the center of holies

  237. was the ark

  238. containing the Ten Commandments.

  239. God's law.

  240. God's law uniquely reflected

  241. God's holy character.

  242. And above the ark

  243. is the mercy seat,

  244. flanked by the cherubim.

  245. And as the author of Hebrews says,

  246. the cherubim of glory

  247. overshadowed the mercy seats.

  248. So God declares in Exodus 25,

    Exodus 25:22

  249. verse 22,

  250. there at the holy of holies

  251. I will meet with you.

  252. And from above the mercy seat,

  253. from between the two cherubim

  254. that are on the ark

  255. of the testimony,

  256. I will speak with you

  257. about all that I will give you

  258. in commandment

  259. for the people of Israel.

  260. God speaks to his people

  261. above the mercy seat

  262. in the holy of holies.

  263. He put his name there,

  264. Yahweh,

  265. the God of the Bible.

  266. This God who demands

  267. that there be no other gods

  268. in front of him,

  269. no rivals.

  270. This God who raises up

  271. and condemns,

  272. the God who is personal,

  273. who hears his people's prayers,

  274. who can see,

  275. who knows,

  276. who speaks to his people,

  277. the one and only true God

  278. will be approached

  279. at the holy of holies.

  280. Deuteronomy 12,

  281. Moses speaking to the people,

  282. says,

  283. God has put his name there,

  284. but you shall seek the place

  285. the Lord your God will choose

  286. out of all your tribes

  287. as his habitation

  288. to put his name there.

  289. You shall go there.

  290. So it's above the mercy seat

  291. where God will be approached.

  292. He tells his people

  293. how he is going to be approached

  294. and the king of the universe

  295. has set his throne

  296. inside this small tabernacle.

  297. What a humble king this God is.

  298. The king worshipped in heaven

  299. shows his humility

  300. by dwelling in a small tent

  301. in the wilderness

  302. to be with his people.

  303. God is a humble king.

  304. Not only is he humble,

  305. but he is holy as well.

  306. Because you cannot just casually

  307. stroll right in there,

  308. right into the holy of holies.

  309. There was a big

  310. do not enter sign.

  311. If you want to continue to live,

  312. stay out.

  313. No trespassing.

  314. Do not pass go.

  315. Because before the holy of holies

  316. stood this veil

  317. with pictures of cherubim.

  318. And here we begin to see

  319. what the tabernacle

  320. meant to symbolize.

  321. The veil retold a cosmic story.

  322. So here's a picture

  323. of the veil right here

  324. from the ESV Study Bible.

  325. It retold a cosmic story.

  326. It retold the story

  327. of the world

  328. and what its purpose was

  329. and what had gone terribly wrong.

  330. This veil of cherubim

  331. sewn on it

  332. echoed that tragic chapter

  333. of history

  334. when God exiled Adam and Eve

  335. from the Garden of Eden.

  336. He placed cherubim

  337. and a flaming sword

  338. to keep sinful humanity

  339. away from the tree of life.

  340. So after Adam and Eve

  341. plunged the world

  342. into darkness

  343. through their disobedience,

  344. people from then on

  345. were exiled

  346. from God's presence.

  347. The temple is telling

  348. the people a story

  349. of how God initially

  350. dwelled with his people

  351. and the effect of sin

  352. separating the creature

  353. from its creator.

  354. So we were cut off

  355. from the God

  356. we were designed to worship.

  357. And the people of Israel

  358. were to understand

  359. their lives

  360. in light of this overall

  361. cosmic story

  362. symbolized by the tabernacle.

  363. The people could not

  364. enter the Holy of Holies

  365. because of sin.

  366. And God is holy.

  367. But once a year

  368. as you probably know

  369. one man could enter

  370. into God's presence.

  371. The Day of Atonement

  372. that is Yom Kippur

  373. in Leviticus.

  374. The people needed

  375. a mediator

  376. someone to stand

  377. in the gap

  378. between a perfectly

  379. holy God

  380. and sinful humanity.

  381. And this high priest

  382. could enter once a year

  383. sacrificing an animal

  384. as a substitute

  385. in the people's stead

  386. and sprinkling blood

  387. on the mercy seat.

  388. And the priests

  389. were butchers

  390. constantly killing

  391. goats and bulls

  392. to deal with the sin

  393. of the entire nation.

  394. The priest would slaughter

  395. one goat

  396. and the blood

  397. sprinkled on the mercy seat

  398. on the Day of Atonement.

  399. So this resulted

  400. in what the Bible

  401. calls propitiation.

  402. Propitiation

  403. is one of those

  404. long theological words.

  405. Propitiation.

  406. To propitiate something

  407. means to assuage

  408. or satisfy

  409. God's divine anger

  410. or wrath

  411. against sinful man.

  412. God put the animals

  413. to death

  414. in the people's place

  415. so the high priest

  416. as mediator

  417. could approach God

  418. on the people's behalf.

  419. So on that

  420. solemn Day of Atonement

  421. another goat

  422. would be sent

  423. to the wilderness

  424. the scapegoat

  425. symbolizing the people's

  426. sins were forgotten.

  427. The sins of the people

  428. were dealt

  429. by the blood sacrifices.

  430. But in the tabernacle

  431. there was one

  432. really conspicuous

  433. piece of furniture

  434. that was missing.

  435. So any idea

  436. what furniture

  437. was missing

  438. in the tabernacle?

  439. One piece of furniture.

  440. Take a guess.

  441. Yes.

  442. There's a table

  443. but there's no chair

  444. for Aaron

  445. and any of the priests

  446. to sit on

  447. because their work

  448. was never finished

  449. needing constant repetition

  450. indicating that

  451. the one sufficient sacrifice

  452. which provides

  453. true rest

  454. had not yet come.

  455. So Hebrews 10

    Hebrews 10:11

  456. verse 11 and 12

  457. captures the idea.

  458. And every priest

  459. stands daily

  460. at his service

  461. offering repeatedly

  462. the same sacrifices

  463. which can never

  464. take away sins.

  465. But when Christ

  466. had offered

  467. for all time

  468. a single sacrifice

  469. for sins

  470. he sat down

  471. at the right hand

  472. of God.

  473. So there was no chair

  474. because the priest's work

  475. was never done.

  476. But there was one seat

  477. in here

  478. the mercy seat.

  479. But that was reserved

  480. for God himself

  481. who sat there

  482. between the chair of him.

  483. The king

  484. sat on the mercy seat

  485. only to be approached

  486. by the high priest

  487. on the day of atonement.

  488. So do you see the picture

  489. that the tabernacle

  490. is starting

  491. to develop here?

  492. The wonder of wonders.

  493. The king

  494. stepped down

  495. from the mercy seat

  496. and became

  497. our great high priest

  498. fully God

  499. and fully man

  500. and offered

  501. his own blood

  502. as the perfect sacrifice

  503. at the mercy seat

  504. sprinkling his own blood.

  505. And when he rose

  506. from the dead

  507. he sat down

  508. on the throne

  509. reserved for God alone.

  510. So the throne of grace

  511. is a throne of grace

  512. because it's a blood

  513. sprinkled one.

  514. Christ is our scapegoat

  515. who was put to death

  516. outside the camp

  517. so that we

  518. could approach God

  519. in the Holy of Holies.

  520. So I love that hymn

  521. Arise My Soul Arise

  522. the first verse

  523. goes like this

  524. Arise my soul

  525. arise

  526. shake off

  527. the guilty fears

  528. the bleeding sacrifice

  529. in my behalf

  530. appears

  531. before the throne

  532. my surety stands

  533. before the throne

  534. my surety stands

  535. my name is written

  536. on his hands.

  537. So a surety

  538. is one who stands

  539. as a guarantee

  540. for the performance

  541. of another.

  542. So our surety

  543. the Lord Jesus

  544. stands before the throne

  545. as the bleeding sacrifice

  546. on our behalf

  547. right now

  548. and we can shake off

  549. the guilty fears

  550. approach the throne

  551. of grace

  552. because Jesus

  553. guarantees

  554. that we will be accepted.

  555. And so this entire system

  556. is just foreshadowing

  557. this greater reality

  558. that's going to come

  559. and this system

  560. is designed

  561. to answer the question

  562. of how it's possible

  563. for the thrice holy God

  564. to dwell in the midst

  565. of a sinful people

  566. and the answer is this

  567. at the temple

  568. on the ground

  569. of the accepted sacrifice

  570. his throne

  571. the mercy seat

  572. again is a blood sprinkled one.

  573. So realize

  574. if you're an Israelite

  575. there's really no room

  576. for religious pretension

  577. when we draw on you

  578. to the throne of grace

  579. on the basis

  580. of the blood

  581. of the sacrifice

  582. as one saying puts it

  583. at the foot of the cross

  584. is level ground.

  585. The strong in the faith

  586. and the weak

  587. must both approach

  588. the throne

  589. on the same basis.

  590. All must approach

  591. the throne

  592. on the basis

  593. of the sacrifice.

  594. It's true now

  595. it's also true then

  596. there's no room

  597. for religious pretension.

  598. And if you're not

  599. a Christian

  600. perhaps if you're listening

  601. to this and you're not

  602. a Christian

  603. when God summons you

  604. to stand before his throne

  605. on that great

  606. and terrible day

  607. you will find trusting

  608. in your own righteousness

  609. will be like building

  610. a house on sand

  611. and when the storm

  612. of God judgment

  613. comes

  614. great will be the collapse

  615. because you built

  616. a house on the sand.

  617. Instead

  618. build your life

  619. upon the sure

  620. and steady rock

  621. of Christ.

  622. All of the ground

  623. is sinking sand

  624. and you know

  625. we all have our secret sins.

  626. Are we going to plead

  627. our own righteousness

  628. on that day of judgment

  629. before a holy God

  630. who knows and sees all

  631. who knows us better

  632. than we know ourselves

  633. or will our confidence

  634. be in this substitute

  635. who has died in our stead?

  636. So let's flee to Christ

  637. all of us

  638. and take him

  639. hold of him

  640. by faith.

  641. Here's this interesting

  642. side note

  643. that the Bible translators

  644. of the Christian Standard Bible

  645. a translation published

  646. in 2017

  647. led by Tom Schreiner

  648. made

  649. in Romans 3

  650. they chose the word

  651. mercy seat

  652. instead of propitiation.

  653. Do you see why

  654. they would do that?

  655. The mercy seat

  656. is the place

  657. where propitiation happens.

  658. So whom God

  659. put forward

  660. as a propitiation

  661. by his blood

  662. again

  663. assuaging God's

  664. divine anger

  665. God presented him

  666. as the mercy seat

  667. by his blood.

  668. So as I understand

  669. their translational decision

  670. the Greek

  671. a little out of my depth here

  672. but the Greek word

  673. for propitiation

  674. is identical

  675. to the word

  676. for mercy seat.

  677. So when the Old Testament

  678. was translated

  679. into Latin

  680. this word

  681. mercy seat

  682. was translated

  683. as

  684. propitiatorium

  685. which means

  686. the place

  687. of propitiation.

  688. So Romans 3

  689. in context

  690. is arguing

  691. sin provokes

  692. God's wrath

  693. and anger

  694. and argues

  695. God put forward

  696. Christ

  697. at the mercy seat.

  698. So this isn't new

  699. William Tyndale

  700. and Martin Luther

  701. both translated

  702. this similarly.

  703. It's an interesting

  704. translational decision

  705. they made

  706. but it's really

  707. just for the continuity

  708. of imagery.

  709. They want you

  710. to see how

  711. Romans 3

  712. is echoing

  713. the day of atonement

  714. in Yom Kippur.

  715. So let's connect

  716. the dots so far.

  717. God desires

  718. to meet

  719. with his people

  720. and the blood

  721. of the sacrifices

  722. in the tabernacle

  723. are the only means

  724. by which that meaning

  725. is possible.

  726. So the story

  727. continues to unfold

  728. after the tabernacle

  729. is constructed.

  730. After the tabernacle

  731. is completed

  732. that pillar of cloud

  733. that Shekinah glory

  734. descends on it

  735. and the cloud

  736. is where God

  737. appeared in glory

  738. to Moses.

  739. A glory so intense

  740. that Moses

  741. that it made

  742. Moses' face shine

  743. and the descent

  744. of the cloud

  745. on the tabernacle

  746. signifies that God

  747. is now dwelling

  748. with his people.

  749. It was during

  750. this period

  751. where the people

  752. rebelled by making

  753. a golden calf

  754. and Moses intercedes

  755. when the people

  756. are forgiven

  757. and Moses

  758. in his anguish

  759. asks God

  760. to show me

  761. your glory

  762. and the Lord

  763. replies to that

  764. request.

  765. I will cause

  766. all my goodness

  767. to pass in front

  768. of you

  769. and I will

  770. proclaim my name

  771. the Lord

  772. in your presence.

  773. I will have mercy

  774. on whom I will

  775. have mercy

  776. and I will have

  777. compassion

  778. on whom I will

  779. have compassion.

  780. But he said

  781. but you cannot

  782. see my face

  783. for no one

  784. may see me

  785. and live.

  786. So God

  787. is present

  788. on earth

  789. in that cloud

  790. of glory

  791. and the glory

  792. is so intense

  793. that Moses

  794. cannot see the face

  795. of the glory

  796. of God

  797. and live.

  798. But during

  799. this period

  800. of history

  801. something remarkable

  802. happens actually

  803. in Exodus.

  804. The Lord

  805. invites the elders

  806. of Israel

  807. and Moses

  808. to an extraordinary

  809. covenant meal.

  810. The elders

  811. of Israel

  812. are invited

  813. up on the mountain

  814. with Moses

  815. sitting at God's feet

  816. and the elders

  817. ate in the presence

  818. of the Lord

  819. though the people

  820. could not see

  821. God face to face

  822. and live.

  823. So isn't it amazing

  824. God desires

  825. to share a meal

  826. with the people

  827. of Israel.

  828. I think about Jesus

  829. at the Lord's Supper

  830. he says

  831. I have greatly

  832. desired to have

  833. this meal with you.

  834. So God desires

  835. to fellowship

  836. with his people

  837. and you see that

  838. right in the beginning

  839. of Exodus

  840. and even though

  841. the people

  842. could not see

  843. God's face

  844. and live

  845. God still makes

  846. peace with his people

  847. before he calls

  848. them into his presence.

  849. They need not fear

  850. destruction.

  851. So isn't that amazing

  852. God from the beginning

  853. is desiring

  854. to fellowship

  855. with his people

  856. to eat a meal

  857. with us.

  858. And to recap

  859. the meeting place

  860. between God

  861. and his people

  862. was mediated

  863. by one

  864. appointed by God

  865. representing them

  866. before God's presence

  867. on the basis

  868. of the sacrifice.

  869. So the second part

  870. is the temple garden.

  871. The temple garden.

  872. So question

  873. in what ways

  874. do we see

  875. a similarity

  876. between the temple

  877. and the tabernacle

  878. and the garden of Eden?

  879. Just going to throw

  880. that out there.

  881. Any similarities

  882. that we see?

  883. Tom?

  884. Is there

  885. cherubim

  886. a cherubim

  887. or present?

  888. Yes.

  889. The cherubim

  890. reappear in the tabernacle

  891. guarding the Holy of Holies

  892. just like the cherubim

  893. were guarding Eden

  894. and the Tree of Life.

  895. So please

  896. walk up in the garden

  897. and that

  898. this idea

  899. of walking

  900. is really

  901. really precious

  902. and important.

  903. God is walking

  904. in the garden

  905. like you said Michelle

  906. and this is echoed

  907. throughout the Old Testament.

  908. I have a few verses here.

  909. Leviticus 26

  910. the Lord promises

  911. that he will walk

  912. with his people

  913. and be their God.

  914. Verse 11 to 12

  915. I will make my dwelling

  916. among you

  917. and my soul

  918. shall not abhor you

  919. and I will walk

  920. among you

  921. and will be your God

  922. and you shall be my people.

  923. Or Deuteronomy 23

  924. God commands Israel

  925. to keep their camp holy

  926. because he walks

  927. in their midst.

  928. Verse 14

  929. Because the Lord

  930. your God

  931. walks in the midst

  932. of your camp

  933. to deliver you

  934. and to give you up

  935. your enemies before you

  936. therefore your camp

  937. must be holy

  938. so that he may not

  939. see anything indecent

  940. among you

  941. and turn away from you.

  942. 2 Samuel

  943. when David

  944. plans to build a temple

  945. the Lord reminds him

  946. that I have been

  947. walking about

  948. in a tent

  949. for my dwelling

  950. that's a tabernacle

  951. again the humility

  952. of God

  953. to walk among

  954. people in a small tent.

  955. I think the most

  956. explicit area

  957. where Eden

  958. is described

  959. as a temple

  960. is in Ezekiel 28.

  961. God calls Eden

  962. a sanctuary

  963. placed upon a mountain

  964. which Bible

  965. scholars point out

  966. that's how Israel's

  967. temple is often

  968. described elsewhere.

  969. So walking

  970. is very important

  971. there's cherubim

  972. anything else?

  973. You could think

  974. of similarities

  975. between Eden

  976. and the tabernacle.

  977. what was that

  978. Ezekiel 28?

  979. Just the whole chapter?

  980. Yes.

  981. And where Israel's

  982. temple is described

  983. elsewhere as

  984. Exodus 15

  985. Israel's temple

  986. is described

  987. as a mountain

  988. just like

  989. God calls Eden

  990. a sanctuary

  991. and a mountain.

  992. there's two more

  993. that I thought of

  994. that I read about.

  995. The second similarity

  996. between the tabernacle

  997. and Eden

  998. is the parallel

  999. between Adam's role

  1000. and the role

  1001. of the priest

  1002. of the temple.

  1003. So God placed Adam

  1004. in Eden

  1005. to work

  1006. and keep it.

  1007. So Adam's work

  1008. is not just

  1009. working the soil

  1010. but it's serving God

  1011. and guarding

  1012. the garden

  1013. from intruders.

1014. So he is a gardener

  1015. and a guardian.

1016. And the two Hebrew words

  1017. for work and keep

  1018. when they occur

1019. later in the Old Testament

  1020. without exceptions

  1021. have the meaning

  1022. most often

  1023. of priests

  1024. serving God

  1025. in the temple

  1026. and guarding

  1027. the temple

  1028. from unclean things

  1029. entering it.

  1030. So I put

  1031. number three

  1032. as an example.

  1033. It's using

  1034. the same word

  1035. that God

  1036. charged Adam

  1037. with

  1038. when God

  1039. is charging

  1040. the priests.

  1041. It says,

  1042. they the priests

  1043. shall keep

  1044. guard over him

  1045. and over the whole

  1046. congregation

  1047. before the tent

  1048. of meeting

  1049. as they minister

  1050. as they work

  1051. at the tabernacle.

  1052. They shall guard

  1053. keep all the furnishings

  1054. of the tent

  1055. of meeting

  1056. and keep guard

  1057. over the people

  1058. of Israel

  1059. as they minister

  1060. at the tabernacle.

1061. So those are the same.

  1062. It's echoing

  1063. the charge

  1064. that God gave

  1065. to Adam.

  1066. So Adam,

  1067. like the priest,

  1068. took care

  1069. of the temple,

  1070. the dwelling place

  1071. of God

  1072. by keeping

  1073. unclean things

  1074. out,

  1075. intruders out.

  1076. And you start

  1077. to see Adam's

  1078. responsibility

  1079. in the garden

  1080. and how he failed

  1081. to protect Eve

  1082. from the serpent.

  1083. So before this serpent

  1084. ever even

  1085. tempted Eve,

  1086. Adam has failed

  1087. in his duty

  1088. to protect the garden.

  1089. I think that's why

  1090. in Romans 5,

    Romans 5:12

  1091. verse 12,

  1092. Paul will say

  1093. Adam bears

  1094. particular responsibility.

  1095. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:12

  1096. verse 12 says,

  1097. sin came into

  1098. the world

  1099. because of

  1100. what one man

  1101. did and with

  1102. sin came death.

  1103. Adam failed

  1104. to keep the intruder

  1105. out.

  1106. He didn't intervene

  1107. to protect Eve

  1108. from the serpent.

  1109. So Adam

  1110. bore responsibility

  1111. for the fall

  1112. even before

  1113. Eve was tempted.

  1114. And we see

  1115. that picked up

  1116. in the temple

  1117. where the priests

  1118. were meant

  1119. to guard

  1120. from unclean

  1121. things,

  1122. mostly Gentiles,

  1123. from coming

  1124. into the

  1125. into the

  1126. inner sanctum.

  1127. So we see

  1128. the first was

  1129. walking,

  1130. Adam's priestly status.

  1131. There's the cherubim,

  1132. which we touched upon.

  1133. And then finally,

  1134. some Bible scholars

  1135. have pointed out

  1136. the lampstand

  1137. directly outside

  1138. the Holy of Holies

  1139. is possibly designed

  1140. to appear

  1141. as a tree

  1142. with seven branches

  1143. coming off

  1144. a single trunk.

  1145. It's possible

  1146. the lampstand

  1147. was designed

  1148. to point back

1149. to the tree of life.

  1150. And if you read

  1151. Exodus 25,

  1152. there are these cups,

  1153. four cups

  1154. next to the lampstand

  1155. and they're described

  1156. with flowers

  1157. and almond blossoms.

  1158. So kind of a

  1159. garden imagery,

  1160. tree imagery.

  1161. I don't know.

  1162. Could be.

  1163. Doesn't Zechariah

  1164. talk about the memoir

  1165. with trees

  1166. feeding into it?

  1167. That sounds right.

  1168. Yeah.

  1169. I,

1170. kind of looks like a tree.

  1171. It's got branches.

  1172. Yeah.

  1173. It's drunk.

  1174. Use your imagination.

  1175. But it could be,

  1176. it could be

  1177. symbolizing the tree

1178. that was in the garden.

  1179. So the first part

  1180. was the temple symbol.

  1181. The second

  1182. was the temple

  1183. in the garden.

  1184. And now

  1185. the third part

  1186. in the play

  1187. is the temple

  1188. completed.

  1189. The temple

  1190. is finally completed.

  1191. And you could

  1192. see how the temple

  1193. mirrors

  1194. the Garden of Eden.

  1195. The innermost part

1196. of the Holy of Holies,

  1197. the holy place

  1198. and the outer court.

  1199. So the cloud

  1200. that came upon

  1201. the tabernacle

  1202. isn't mentioned again

  1203. until Solomon's day.

  1204. So Solomon,

  1205. as you probably know,

1206. is in the line of David,

  1207. who God promised

  1208. the Messiah

  1209. would one day come

  1210. and rule,

  1211. bring an international

1212. blessing to the whole world

1213. as God had promised Abraham

  1214. back in Genesis 12.

  1215. that offspring

  1216. will come

1217. in the line of David.

  1218. The Messiah

  1219. would be from

  1220. the line of David.

  1221. And that great day

  1222. had finally come

  1223. under Solomon's reign.

  1224. It had taken

  1225. seven years

  1226. to build,

  1227. but now

  1228. it was finally complete.

  1229. Solomon's temple

  1230. was at last

  1231. a magnificent reality.

1232. So to fit the occasion,

  1233. Solomon dedicated

  1234. this building

  1235. to the Lord,

  1236. asking that God's name

  1237. would dwell there.

  1238. And 1 Kings 8

  1239. records a celebration.

1240. God let it be known

  1241. that he was present.

  1242. In verse 10 to 11

  1243. in 1 Kings 8,

  1244. it says,

  1245. And when the priest

1246. came out of the holy place,

  1247. a cloud filled

1248. the house of the Lord

  1249. so that the priest

  1250. could not stand

  1251. to minister

  1252. because of the Lord.

1253. For the glory of the Lord

  1254. filled the house

  1255. of the Lord.

  1256. So God is now

  1257. dwelling with his people

  1258. in the temple.

  1259. In many ways,

  1260. this is the climax.

  1261. This is the apex

  1262. of the reigns

  1263. of David and Solomon.

1264. This would be the place

  1265. that replaced the tabernacle

  1266. in the wilderness.

  1267. So this would be

  1268. the place that symbolized

  1269. the presence

  1270. of the living God

  1271. in the midst

  1272. of his people Israel.

  1273. The place where they

  1274. could come before him

  1275. and worship in prayer

1276. and for the cleansing work

  1277. of the sacrifices

1278. to happen amongst the priests.

  1279. The temple

  1280. would be the heartbeat

  1281. of Israel's faith

  1282. in Yahweh their God.

  1283. So if you turn

  1284. to Psalm 24,

  1285. the psalmist

  1286. writes a familiar verse

  1287. in Psalm 27,

  1288. sorry,

  1289. Psalm 27 verse 4.

    Psalms 27:4

  1290. One thing

  1291. have I asked

  1292. of the Lord

1293. that I will seek after

  1294. that I may dwell

  1295. in the house

  1296. of the Lord

  1297. all the days

  1298. of my life

  1299. to gaze upon

  1300. the beauty

  1301. of the Lord

  1302. and to inquire

  1303. in his temple.

  1304. And this glorious

  1305. passage is echoed

  1306. in Psalm 84

    Psalms 84:10–11

  1307. verses 10 to 11.

  1308. The psalmist declares

  1309. my soul long,

  1310. yes,

  1311. faints

  1312. for the courts

  1313. of the Lord.

  1314. My heart and flesh

  1315. sing for joy

  1316. to the living God.

  1317. Then in verse 10,

  1318. better is one day

  1319. in your courts

  1320. than a thousand elsewhere.

  1321. I would rather

  1322. be a doorkeeper

  1323. in the house

  1324. of my God

  1325. than dwell

  1326. in the tents

  1327. of the wicked.

  1328. The psalmist

  1329. yearned

1330. to be in the temple.

  1331. The psalmist

  1332. is saying

  1333. I long so much

  1334. I just want to

  1335. collapse to the ground

  1336. thinking about

  1337. being at the temple.

  1338. That's how much

  1339. I love it.

  1340. Maybe he really

  1341. appreciated the

  1342. architecture of the temple.

  1343. You know,

  1344. it's a beautiful

  1345. aesthetic design,

  1346. beautiful columns.

  1347. No, of course not.

  1348. That's not right.

  1349. Clearly the temple

  1350. was important

  1351. because the temple

  1352. is where God dwelt.

  1353. The temple

  1354. was the meeting place

  1355. between God

  1356. and his people

  1357. and the temple

  1358. represented the

  1359. glorious presence

  1360. of God

  1361. revealed most fully

1362. in the Holy of Holies,

  1363. the inner chamber

  1364. of the temple.

  1365. More than anywhere

  1366. else on the earth,

  1367. more than anywhere

  1368. else,

  1369. God's presence

  1370. was manifested

1371. in the Holy of Holies

  1372. in the temple.

1373. He put his name there.

  1374. In Psalm 84,

  1375. the whole thing,

  1376. the temple

  1377. actually is an oasis

  1378. in the desert

  1379. for a weary pilgrim

  1380. because the psalmist

  1381. talks about being

  1382. attacked and persecuted

1383. in the Valley of Tears

  1384. and the temple

  1385. becomes a Garden

  1386. of Eden for him

  1387. where he experiences

  1388. true happiness

  1389. because of the temple

  1390. is where he would

  1391. commune with his God.

  1392. So the temple

  1393. is a place

  1394. where God

  1395. would dwell

  1396. with his people.

  1397. Again,

  1398. isn't that amazing?

  1399. God desires

  1400. to dwell

  1401. with his people

  1402. and the entire Bible

  1403. is asking the question,

  1404. how can God

  1405. dwell with

  1406. the sinful people?

  1407. You know,

  1408. the Bible

  1409. is asking the question,

1410. how can a good God

  1411. send us to hell?

  1412. That's not the question

  1413. at all.

  1414. The Bible

  1415. is asking the question,

1416. how can a good God

1417. not send us to hell?

  1418. And God desires

  1419. to dwell

  1420. with his people,

  1421. but again,

  1422. how can he

  1423. because he is holy?

  1424. And so there's a tension

  1425. right in the temple.

1426. But right at the outset,

  1427. something is fundamentally

  1428. flawed about the temple.

  1429. The temple was great,

  1430. right?

  1431. Solomon hints,

  1432. even during the celebration,

  1433. that it's actually inadequate.

  1434. 1 Kings 8, 13,

  1435. Solomon celebrates,

1436. I have indeed built you

  1437. an exalted house,

  1438. a place for you

  1439. to dwell in forever.

1440. But then in verse 27,

  1441. But will God indeed

  1442. dwell on the earth?

  1443. Behold,

1444. heaven and the highest heavens

  1445. cannot contain you.

1446. How much less this house

  1447. that I have built.

  1448. Solomon understood something.

  1449. He understood that

  1450. God created everything.

  1451. The one who created

  1452. everything out of nothing

  1453. could not possibly

1454. be limited by a temple,

  1455. especially one made

  1456. from human hands.

1457. So here's the first problem

  1458. with a temple.

  1459. A handmade structure

  1460. is not fitting

  1461. for the God

  1462. of the universe

  1463. to dwell in.

  1464. A handmade structure

  1465. is not fitting

  1466. for the God

  1467. of the universe

  1468. to dwell in.

  1469. Acts 7,

    Acts 7:48–49

  1470. verses 48 to 49,

  1471. Stephen quotes Isaiah 66

  1472. when he said,

  1473. Yet the Most High

1474. does not dwell in houses

  1475. made by hands.

  1476. As the prophet says,

  1477. Heaven is my throne

  1478. and the earth

  1479. is my footstool.

  1480. What kind of house

1481. will you build for me,

  1482. says the Lord,

1483. and what is the place

  1484. of my rest?

  1485. The whole earth

  1486. cannot contain God's presence.

1487. How much less a building

  1488. made by human hands.

  1489. So we see that

  1490. while the tabernacle

  1491. and eventually the temple

  1492. serve at the center

  1493. of Israelite worship,

  1494. even from the beginning,

  1495. it's defective.

  1496. It's deficient.

  1497. But there's also

  1498. a second problem,

1499. worse than the first one.

  1500. The second problem

  1501. is this.

  1502. Israel's sin

  1503. repeatedly compromised

  1504. the temple.

  1505. Israel's sin

  1506. repeatedly compromised

  1507. the temple.

  1508. As Jesus said,

  1509. His Father's house

  1510. of worship

  1511. was made into

  1512. a den of thieves.

  1513. Just like the heart

  1514. of a fallen sinner,

  1515. God made us

1516. to be places of worship

  1517. but sin corrupts

  1518. and our hearts

  1519. become dens of thieves.

  1520. Instead of worshiping

  1521. God at the temple,

  1522. Israel quickly devolved

  1523. into what I call

  1524. rabbit hat religion.

  1525. Rabbit hat religion.

  1526. That's where God

1527. is a means to an end.

  1528. God will do

  1529. whatever you ask Him

  1530. to do.

  1531. Pull a rabbit

  1532. out of your hat

  1533. if you just have

  1534. a lucky token

1535. of the Ark of the Covenant

1536. or if you just go

  1537. and make some sacrifices

  1538. at the temple.

  1539. But God is not

1540. a means to an end.

1541. He will not be mocked.

  1542. Eventually the temple

  1543. had sunk so low

  1544. that pagan sacrifices

  1545. were made inside it.

  1546. Is the God

  1547. who is holy

  1548. going to dwell

  1549. in a house

  1550. filled with idolatry?

  1551. Is the king

  1552. going to build

1553. his house in a dump?

  1554. Would you live

  1555. in a dump?

  1556. Of course not.

  1557. How much more

  1558. is the God

  1559. who is holy

  1560. not going to dwell

  1561. in a house

  1562. filled with idolatry?

  1563. And at one point

1564. the book of God's law

  1565. had to be found

1566. in a pile of garbage.

  1567. It sunk so low

  1568. that God

  1569. told the people

  1570. that they would

  1571. go into captivity,

  1572. exiled into the foreign

  1573. nations,

  1574. and God's going

  1575. to utterly destroy

  1576. Jerusalem.

  1577. But right before

  1578. that happens,

  1579. right before that horror,

  1580. the most dreadful thing

  1581. happens.

  1582. God leaves

  1583. the people.

  1584. The glory of God

  1585. departs from the temple.

  1586. God declares

  1587. His intentions

  1588. in Ezekiel 10.

1589. And He said to me,

  1590. Son of Man,

  1591. do you see

  1592. what they are doing?

  1593. The great abominations

1594. that the house of Israel

  1595. are committing here

  1596. to drive me far

  1597. from my sanctuary.

  1598. But you will see

  1599. still greater abominations.

  1600. And He brought me

  1601. to the entrance

  1602. of the courts.

  1603. And when I looked,

  1604. behold,

  1605. there is a hole

  1606. in the wall.

1607. And He said to me,

  1608. Son of Man,

  1609. dig in the wall.

1610. So I dug in the wall

  1611. and behold,

  1612. there was an entrance.

1613. And He said to me,

  1614. go in and see

  1615. the vile abominations

1616. that they are committing here.

1617. So I went in and saw

  1618. and there engraved

  1619. on the wall

  1620. all around

  1621. was every form

  1622. of creeping thing

  1623. and loathsome beasts

  1624. and all the idols

1625. of the house of Israel.

  1626. And before them

  1627. stood 70 men

  1628. of the elders

1629. of the house of Israel

  1630. with Jezaniah,

  1631. the son of Staphon,

  1632. standing among them.

  1633. Each had a censer

  1634. in his hand

  1635. and the smoke

  1636. of the cloud

  1637. of incense went up.

1638. And He said to me,

  1639. Son of Man,

  1640. have you seen

  1641. what the elders

1642. of the house of Israel

1643. are doing in the dark,

1644. each in his own room

  1645. for pictures?

  1646. For they say,

1647. the Lord does not see us.

  1648. The Lord has forsaken

  1649. the land.

1650. He said also to me,

  1651. you will see

  1652. still greater abominations

  1653. that they commit.

  1654. Shocking,

  1655. is it not?

1656. The leaders of the people

  1657. are committing

  1658. flagrant idolatry

1659. in the king's own house.

  1660. The glory of God

  1661. leaves the temple

  1662. and the people

  1663. no longer enjoy

  1664. God's presence.

  1665. You know,

  1666. God in fact prophesied

1667. the departure of His glory

  1668. well in advance.

  1669. Back in Deuteronomy,

  1670. Moses warned the people,

  1671. then my anger

  1672. shall be aroused

1673. against them in that day

1674. and I will forsake them

1675. and I will hide my face

  1676. from them

1677. and they shall be devoured

  1678. and many evils

  1679. and troubles

  1680. shall befall them

1681. so that they will say

  1682. in that day,

  1683. have not these evils

  1684. come upon us

  1685. because our God

  1686. is not among us.

  1687. Hosea 9 verse 12,

    Hosea 9:12

  1688. God proclaimed,

  1689. woe to them

1690. when I depart from them.

  1691. No illustration

  1692. can adequately

  1693. capture this national tragedy.

  1694. 9-11 may be

  1695. the most striking

  1696. in recent memory

  1697. of a national tragedy

  1698. when the towers

  1699. came crashing down

  1700. but this was worse

  1701. because this building

1702. would be like a church,

  1703. a trade center

  1704. in the White House

  1705. all wrapped into one.

  1706. But even then,

  1707. as Christians,

  1708. our worship

  1709. is not connected

  1710. to a place

  1711. so the words

  1712. don't adequately

  1713. capture the pain

  1714. of the temple

  1715. being destroyed.

  1716. Imagine everything

  1717. being taken away

  1718. from you.

  1719. First,

  1720. your church family

  1721. and then your

  1722. physical family

  1723. is carried away

  1724. and your house,

  1725. every possession

  1726. and finally

  1727. your own identity

  1728. is ripped away

  1729. from you.

  1730. God departs from you

  1731. and you are utterly

  1732. worthless

  1733. because God

  1734. has forsaken you.

  1735. The pain of it,

  1736. the writer of Lamentations

  1737. expressed this pain.

  1738. Lamentations 2,

1739. he has bent his bow

  1740. like an enemy

  1741. with his right hand

  1742. set like a foe.

  1743. He has killed

  1744. all who are delightful

  1745. in our eyes.

  1746. In the tent

1747. of the daughter of Zion

  1748. he has poured out

  1749. his fury like fire.

  1750. He has laid waste

1751. his booth like a garden,

  1752. laid in ruins

  1753. his meeting place.

1754. The Lord has made Zion

  1755. to forget festival

  1756. and Sabbath

1757. and in his fierce indignation

1758. has spurned king and priest.

  1759. The Lord has scorned

  1760. his altar,

  1761. disowned his sanctuary.

  1762. He has delivered

1763. into the hand of the enemy,

1764. the walls of her palaces.

  1765. They raise the clamor

1766. in the house of the Lord

1767. as on the day of festival.

  1768. The Lord determined

  1769. to lay in ruins

  1770. the wall

1771. of the daughter of Zion.

1772. This is like a person

  1773. looking at the ruins

1774. of the raising of Warsaw

  1775. after the Holocaust.

  1776. Complete devastation.

  1777. But it was caused

  1778. by God's judgment.

1779. The people were in darkness

  1780. because of their idolatry

1781. and God had caused that.

  1782. Jerusalem is shattered.

1783. The king from David's line

  1784. is removed.

  1785. Homes, including the palace,

  1786. are destroyed.

  1787. And the temple

1788. is now a trash heap

  1789. laid in ruins.

  1790. Israel experiences

  1791. national death.

  1792. And during this downfall,

  1793. the long-for deliverer

  1794. from David's house

  1795. does not arise.

  1796. Where is this one

  1797. from David's line

  1798. who will come?

  1799. When will he come

  1800. to save Israel?

  1801. The people dwelled

  1802. in a deep darkness

  1803. in the exile.

  1804. But the fourth part

  1805. after the exile

  1806. is the temple expansion.

  1807. The temple expansion.

  1808. The prophets talk

  1809. about a future time

  1810. when the temple

  1811. not only returns,

  1812. but expands.

  1813. And the blessing

  1814. of God's presence

  1815. will expand over Jerusalem.

  1816. Over the whole site

  1817. of Jerusalem,

  1818. the temple is going

  1819. to expand.

  1820. Listen to some verses

  1821. in the prophets.

  1822. Isaiah 4, verse 5.

    Isaiah 4:5

  1823. Then the Lord

  1824. will create over

  1825. the whole site

  1826. of Mount Zion

  1827. and over her assemblies

  1828. a cloud by day

1829. and Moses in the shining

  1830. of a flaming fire

  1831. by night

1832. and smoke in the shining

  1833. of a flaming fire

  1834. by night.

1835. For over all the glory

1836. there will be a canopy.

  1837. So God is going

  1838. to dwell over

  1839. the assemblies

  1840. gathered at Israel

  1841. a cloud by day.

  1842. Or Ezekiel 37.

  1843. God says,

  1844. I will make a covenant

  1845. of peace with them.

  1846. Actually,

  1847. Jeremiah 3.

  1848. And when you have

  1849. multiplied and been

  1850. fruitful in the land

  1851. in those days,

  1852. declares the Lord,

1853. they shall no more say

1854. the ark of the covenant

  1855. of the Lord.

1856. It shall not come to mind

  1857. or be remembered

  1858. or missed.

1859. It shall not be made again.

  1860. At that time,

  1861. Jerusalem shall be called

1862. the throne of the Lord

  1863. and all nations

  1864. shall gather to it

  1865. to the presence

1866. of the Lord in Jerusalem

1867. and they shall no more

  1868. stubbornly follow

  1869. their own evil hearts.

1870. So you see the picture.

  1871. All the nations

  1872. will gather

  1873. at this temple

  1874. and the Lord

  1875. will cleanse the hearts

  1876. of a stubborn people.

  1877. The temple is expanding

  1878. because there's no more

1879. of the ark of the covenant.

1880. Then we get into Ezekiel.

  1881. I will make a covenant

  1882. of peace with them.

  1883. It shall be

  1884. an everlasting covenant

  1885. with them

1886. and I will set them

  1887. in their land

  1888. and multiply them

1889. and will set my sanctuary

  1890. in their midst forever.

  1891. My dwelling place

  1892. shall be with them

1893. and I will be their God

1894. and they shall be my people.

  1895. Then the nations

1896. will know that I am the Lord

  1897. who sanctifies Israel

  1898. when my sanctuary

  1899. is in their midst

  1900. forevermore.

1901. So God is going to dwell

  1902. with his people forever.

1903. But one of the most

  1904. stunning pictures

  1905. I think comes

1906. at the end of Ezekiel.

  1907. Ezekiel 40

  1908. envisions God

  1909. brought Ezekiel

1910. to the land of Israel

  1911. and set him down

1912. on a very high mountain

1913. on which was a structure

  1914. and behold

  1915. there was a man

  1916. whose appearance

  1917. was like bronze

  1918. with a linen cord

  1919. and measuring reed

  1920. in his hands

  1921. and he was standing

  1922. in the gateway.

  1923. And then

  1924. that's picked up

  1925. in Revelation

  1926. to describe Jesus.

  1927. But Ezekiel

  1928. begins to describe

  1929. to the people

  1930. in exile

  1931. the new Jerusalem.

  1932. And the new Jerusalem

  1933. itself

  1934. is depicted

  1935. symbolically

  1936. as what?

  1937. A perfect cube.

  1938. And where else

1939. have we seen a cube

  1940. so far?

  1941. The Holy of Holies.

  1942. The new Jerusalem

  1943. is described

1944. as the Holy of Holies

  1945. and there's only one

1946. cube in the Old Testament.

  1947. The Holy of Holies.

  1948. So you can't have

  1949. a temple, right,

1950. in the Holy of Holies.

1951. So what is he saying?

1952. All the people of God

1953. are in the Holy of Holies.

1954. They are in the temple.

1955. They are in the presence

  1956. of the living God.

  1957. So in the midst

  1958. of darkness

  1959. and discouragement,

  1960. Ezekiel is prophesying

  1961. about God restoring

  1962. the Garden of Eden

  1963. only much better.

1964. God is going to start

  1965. dwelling with his people.

  1966. Meanwhile,

  1967. in Ezekiel 11,

  1968. God tells the exiles

  1969. that he himself

  1970. will be their sanctuary

  1971. in the exile.

  1972. So in other words,

  1973. God is teaching

  1974. his people

  1975. that the temple,

  1976. the true temple,

  1977. is where God is.

  1978. It's not where

  1979. the stonework

  1980. and masonry are.

  1981. And when the exiles

  1982. return,

  1983. of course,

  1984. they are encouraged

  1985. to rebuild the temple

  1986. as they are still

  1987. under the old covenant

  1988. and requires it.

  1989. But God is teaching

  1990. his people

  1991. that where I am,

  1992. that's where

  1993. the true temple is.

  1994. And now,

  1995. just as an aside,

  1996. Ezekiel's language

  1997. is apocalyptic.

  1998. And some will say

  1999. that physical temple

  2000. will be restored

  2001. in Israel

  2002. at some future date.

  2003. I would just

  2004. respectfully disagree

  2005. with that interpretation

  2006. because one of the

  2007. challenges,

  2008. I think,

  2009. of seeing that

  2010. the actual physical

  2011. temple being restored

  2012. in Israel

  2013. is that the temple

  2014. is always connected

  2015. with the sacrificial system.

2016. So how can the temple

  2017. be restored

  2018. without also restoring

  2019. the ritual sacrifices?

2020. So I think in this stage

  2021. of redemptive history,

  2022. right,

  2023. under the new covenant,

  2024. that sacrificial system

  2025. is obsolete

  2026. because the perfect

  2027. sacrifice has come.

  2028. So instead,

  2029. I think the temple

  2030. dimension seems symbolic.

  2031. Ezekiel is speaking

  2032. about God's good intention

  2033. for his people

2034. and is speaking to exiles

  2035. in a language

  2036. they understood.

2037. The temple will be restored.

  2038. And so the people

2039. waited for that great day

  2040. to unfold

  2041. when the temple

  2042. will be restored

  2043. to its former glory,

  2044. but even better.

2045. But even after the people

  2046. returned from exile

  2047. in Ezra and Nehemiah,

2048. they built a modest temple

2049. and the glory of God

  2050. did not return

  2051. on the temple.

  2052. So part five,

  2053. part five,

  2054. enter the temple fulfiller.

  2055. The temple fulfiller.

  2056. The centuries unfolded

  2057. and still the glory

  2058. was hidden.

2059. But in the fullness of time,

  2060. Christ emerges

  2061. as the new temple.

  2062. God sent a man

  2063. who fulfilled the temple.

  2064. John 1, verse 1,

    John 1:1

  2065. casually,

  2066. John says,

2067. and the word became flesh

  2068. and dwelt among us.

  2069. So that word dwelt,

  2070. right,

  2071. literally means tabernacled.

  2072. God is now tabernacling

  2073. with his people

  2074. when the second person

  2075. of the Trinity,

  2076. Christ,

  2077. became a human.

  2078. And Jesus underscores this

  2079. in Matthew 12, verse 6,

    Matthew 12:6

2080. where he says about himself,

  2081. something greater

  2082. than the temple

2083. is here in front of you.

  2084. In the incarnation,

  2085. Jesus is the place

2086. where God became a man.

  2087. That is what Christians

  2088. have always believed.

  2089. Listen to how

  2090. the Heinrich Neisting Cree

  2091. puts it.

2092. We believe in one Lord,

  2093. Jesus Christ,

2094. the only Son of God,

  2095. eternally begotten

  2096. of the Father,

  2097. God from God,

  2098. light from true light,

2099. true God from true God,

  2100. begotten, not made,

2101. one and being with the Father.

  2102. Through him,

  2103. that is Jesus,

  2104. all things were made.

2105. So Jesus is with us.

  2106. God himself

  2107. is dwelling with us.

2108. True God from true God,

2109. one and being with the Father.

  2110. And the glory

  2111. that had departed

  2112. from the temple

  2113. in Jerusalem

  2114. appears once again.

  2115. But this time,

  2116. it wasn't on a temple,

  2117. but on a man.

  2118. That Shekinah glory

  2119. appears on Jesus

  2120. at the scene

  2121. of transfiguration.

  2122. Recall,

  2123. as he was praying,

  2124. the appearance

  2125. of his faiths changed

  2126. and his clothes

  2127. became as bright

2128. as a flash of lightning

  2129. and his face

  2130. shone like the sun.

  2131. See,

  2132. an amazing act

  2133. rich in meaning.

  2134. In Jesus,

2135. all the fullness of God

  2136. was pleased to dwell.

  2137. That glory

  2138. is now resting

  2139. upon Jesus.

  2140. And Jesus began

  2141. to teach

  2142. to the woman

  2143. at the well

  2144. that the time

  2145. was dawning now

  2146. where true worshipers

  2147. would no longer

  2148. worship at the temple

  2149. in Jerusalem,

  2150. but would be directed

  2151. to the Father

  2152. through the Son.

  2153. Jesus fulfills

  2154. and now is replacing

  2155. the earthly temple

  2156. at Jerusalem.

2157. He is now the place

  2158. where true worshipers

  2159. worship God.

  2160. So if you want

  2161. to worship God,

2162. we don't go to the temple.

2163. You go to the Son.

2164. Jesus is the temple fulfiller.

  2165. We access the Father

  2166. through the Son.

  2167. Jesus is the way,

  2168. the truth,

  2169. and the life.

  2170. No one goes

  2171. to the Father

  2172. except through Him.

  2173. So our faith

  2174. is not bound up

  2175. with a location,

  2176. animal sacrifices,

  2177. or rituals.

  2178. Actually,

  2179. when Christianity

  2180. enters into a culture,

  2181. people stop killing animals.

  2182. It is bound up.

2183. Our faith is bound up

2184. in the work of Christ

2185. and His work on our behalf.

  2186. And eventually,

  2187. the Romans

  2188. came and destroyed

  2189. the temple,

2190. razed it to the ground

  2191. in 70 AD.

  2192. So God has said

  2193. He is done

  2194. with the physical temple.

  2195. It's over.

  2196. It's obsolete.

  2197. And while Jesus

  2198. identifies Himself

  2199. with the temple,

2200. He goes on to say

  2201. this new temple

  2202. is still actually

  2203. under construction.

  2204. Jesus is the cornerstone

  2205. of a new temple,

  2206. of the new creation

  2207. that God is building.

  2208. So you recall

  2209. Jesus said to them,

  2210. Have you never read

  2211. in the Scriptures

  2212. that the stone

  2213. that the builders rejected

  2214. has become the cornerstone?

2215. This was the Lord's doing

  2216. and it is marvelous

  2217. in our eyes.

2218. So if you were going

2219. to build a great building

  2220. in the ancient world,

  2221. the cornerstone

  2222. had to be

  2223. absolutely perfect.

  2224. Only one stone

  2225. in the building

  2226. is perfect,

  2227. had to be perfect

  2228. and that's the cornerstone.

  2229. Had to be perfect

  2230. in each direction

2231. because if it wasn't flat

  2232. then the building

  2233. would be stilted.

  2234. The builders

  2235. had to get

  2236. the perfect cornerstone.

  2237. And Jesus says,

2238. I am the perfect Savior

2239. to make a broken people

  2240. into the perfect building.

  2241. God declares

  2242. in Isaiah 28,

  2243. Behold,

  2244. I lay in Zion

  2245. a stone

  2246. for a foundation,

  2247. a tried stone,

  2248. a precious stone,

  2249. a sure foundation.

  2250. So another temple

  2251. is under construction

  2252. and Jesus

  2253. is the cornerstone.

  2254. Now,

  2255. we come back

  2256. to John 2.

  2257. Jesus' words,

  2258. Destroy this temple,

  2259. in three days

2260. I will raise it up.

  2261. The temple

  2262. always symbolized

  2263. God's intention

2264. to be with his people

  2265. and now Jesus

  2266. is the temple fulfiller.

  2267. I am the temple.

  2268. Neither his opponents

  2269. nor his disciples

  2270. understood what he meant.

  2271. John admits that.

2272. But look into these words.

  2273. Don't miss them.

  2274. Destroy this temple.

  2275. Referring to himself.

  2276. So let those words

2277. sink in for a minute.

  2278. Don't forget them.

  2279. The temple,

  2280. Jesus,

  2281. was destroyed.

  2282. And who destroyed

  2283. the temple?

  2284. Well, I mean,

  2285. on one hand,

  2286. the people destroyed

  2287. the temple.

  2288. Right?

2289. But on the other hand,

  2290. ultimately,

  2291. the Father

  2292. put his own son

  2293. to death

  2294. because of love

  2295. for his people.

  2296. There's a deep mystery

  2297. here at the cross.

  2298. Jesus truly was

  2299. our substitute,

  2300. made to be sin

2301. and a curse for us,

  2302. endured God's

  2303. righteous anger

  2304. for all who had

  2305. returned from their sin

2306. and put their trust in him.

  2307. J.C. Ryle once said,

  2308. That death discharged

2309. in full of the mighty debt

2310. which sinners owe to God

  2311. and threw open

  2312. the door of life

  2313. to every believer.

  2314. That death satisfied

  2315. the righteous claims

  2316. of God's holy law

  2317. and enabled God

  2318. to be just

  2319. and yet the justifier

  2320. of the ungodly.

  2321. That death

  2322. was no mere example

  2323. of self-sacrifice,

  2324. but a complete

  2325. atonement

  2326. and propitiation

  2327. for man's sin.

  2328. And that death

  2329. solved the hard problem

  2330. of how God

  2331. could be perfectly holy

  2332. and yet perfectly merciful.

  2333. It opened the world

  2334. to a fountain

  2335. for all sin

  2336. and uncleanness.

  2337. So at Jesus' crucifixion,

  2338. the mockers declare,

2339. You who destroy the temple

  2340. and rebuild it

  2341. in three days,

  2342. save yourself.

2343. If you are the Son of God,

2344. come down from the cross.

  2345. Jesus then dies

  2346. and the temple veil

  2347. is torn.

  2348. So what does

  2349. the tearing

  2350. of the curtain

  2351. symbolize?

  2352. What is the tearing

  2353. of that curtain

  2354. when Jesus died?

  2355. Miraculously,

  2356. that veil is gone.

  2357. What does that symbolize?

  2358. Olivia?

  2359. Taking down

  2360. the barrier

  2361. reaching us and God.

  2362. Amen.

  2363. Hallelujah.

  2364. Yeah,

2365. that veil of the cherubim

  2366. was a constant reminder

  2367. to the people

  2368. that sin separated them

  2369. from a holy God.

  2370. Now through his death,

  2371. he has removed

  2372. that barrier

  2373. of sin

  2374. that separates us

  2375. from God

  2376. and we may now

  2377. approach him

  2378. with confidence

  2379. and boldness.

  2380. So friend,

  2381. if you are trusting

  2382. in Christ,

  2383. repenting of your sin,

  2384. know that God

  2385. is happy with you.

2386. You can go to him

  2387. confidently

  2388. through the blood

  2389. of the mediator

  2390. and he will not

  2391. turn you away.

  2392. Right?

2393. He is happy with you

  2394. if you're trusting

  2395. in Christ

2396. and turning from your sin.

  2397. What an amazing thing

  2398. that Christ was made

  2399. an offering for sin

  2400. as we read

  2401. in 1 Peter 2.

  2402. For Christ also

  2403. suffered once for sins,

  2404. the righteous

  2405. for the unrighteous.

  2406. When Jesus said

  2407. in John 2

2408. he was at the temple,

  2409. again,

  2410. they didn't understand

  2411. what he meant,

  2412. but after his resurrection

  2413. John tells us

  2414. that they remembered

  2415. his utterance

  2416. and understood

  2417. the scriptures.

  2418. Jesus is that

  2419. great meeting place

  2420. between God and man.

  2421. And of course

  2422. Jesus is the temple,

  2423. but the church,

  2424. those who have been

  2425. turned from our sin

  2426. and been united

  2427. to Christ by faith,

  2428. is a temple

  2429. that's currently

  2430. under construction.

  2431. Right?

  2432. 1 Peter 2.5

  2433. You yourselves,

  2434. like living stones,

  2435. are being built up

  2436. as a spiritual house

2437. to be a holy priesthood,

  2438. to offer spiritual sacrifices

  2439. acceptable to God

  2440. through Jesus Christ.

  2441. And that's what

  2442. Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:20–22

  2443. verses 20-22 assert.

2444. The church has been built

  2445. on the foundation

2446. of the apostles and prophets,

  2447. Christ Jesus himself

  2448. being the cornerstone,

2449. in whom the whole structure

  2450. being joined together

2451. grows into a holy temple

  2452. in the Lord.

  2453. In him you also

  2454. are being built together

  2455. into a dwelling place

2456. for God by the Spirit.

  2457. So corporately

  2458. we are a temple.

  2459. Right?

  2460. But Christian,

  2461. your body

  2462. is a mini-temple

  2463. of God.

  2464. Paul says,

  2465. do you not know

2466. that you are God's temple

  2467. and that God's Spirit

  2468. dwells in you?

  2469. So that's a call

  2470. for personal holiness

  2471. and godliness.

  2472. A great deal

  2473. of language

  2474. tied to a sacrifice

  2475. in the New Testament

  2476. in worship

2477. is tied to our living

  2478. in Christ.

  2479. So it is wrong

  2480. to think

  2481. that our worship

  2482. is restricted

  2483. to a worship service

  2484. at 9 or 11 o'clock

  2485. in the morning.

  2486. Our whole lives

2487. are to be a pleasing

  2488. aroma to Christ.

  2489. And so that temple

  2490. helps us understand

  2491. what our mission

  2492. as a church is.

  2493. So God's original purpose

  2494. for the temple

  2495. in Eden

  2496. that God's image bears

  2497. would expand

2498. to fill the whole earth

  2499. begins to be fulfilled

  2500. in Jesus,

  2501. the new temple

  2502. and in the church.

  2503. So you see

  2504. in this stage

  2505. of redemptive history

  2506. the temple

2507. and the Holy of Holies

  2508. is reversed.

2509. Whereas in the Old Testament

  2510. the Gentiles

  2511. were separated

  2512. from the innermost chamber

2513. of the Holy of Holies

  2514. by the veil.

2515. But now in the Great Commission

2516. the temple is going out

2517. to the ends of the earth

  2518. and through the church

  2519. proclaiming the good news

2520. that life can be found

2521. in the name of Christ.

  2522. So God is present

  2523. through the church

  2524. expanding until it reaches

  2525. the furthest ends

  2526. of the earth.

2527. So the Holy of Holies

  2528. is extending

  2529. that temple

  2530. is extending

2531. to the ends of the earth.

  2532. G.K. Beal says

  2533. our task

  2534. as the covenant community

  2535. the church

2536. is to be God's temple

  2537. so filled

  2538. with His glorious presence

  2539. that we expand

  2540. and fill the earth

  2541. with that presence

  2542. until God

  2543. finally accomplish

  2544. the goal

  2545. completely at the end

  2546. of the time.

2547. So that's our common mission.

2548. That's why we support missionaries.

2549. That's why we do evangelism.

  2550. Because the temple

  2551. is going out

2552. to the ends of the earth.

  2553. It's a dynamic temple.

  2554. But yet

  2555. the account

  2556. goes further still.

  2557. It goes further still.

  2558. The last part

  2559. is

  2560. the world

  2561. encompassing temple.

  2562. The world

  2563. encompassing temple.

  2564. So in the culminating

  2565. vision

  2566. of the last book

  2567. of the Bible

  2568. the people of God

2569. gather in the New Jerusalem

  2570. but there's no temple.

2571. But why would there be?

  2572. Jesus is right there

  2573. with His people.

  2574. And John tells us

  2575. this new Jerusalem

  2576. is shaped

  2577. like a cube.

  2578. Now again

  2579. there's only one cube

  2580. in the Old Testament

  2581. and from which

  2582. this imagery is drawn.

2583. It is the Holy of Holies.

  2584. So in other words

  2585. all of God's people

  2586. are now

2587. in the Holy of Holies

2588. in the most holy place

  2589. always in the sheer

  2590. unmediated glory of God

  2591. forever with the Lord

  2592. face to face

2593. living in the Holy of Holies.

  2594. So it's a small wonder

  2595. John says

  2596. he saw no temple

  2597. in the city

  2598. for the temple

  2599. is God

  2600. the Lord God

  2601. the Almighty

  2602. and the Lamb.

  2603. And moreover

  2604. last thing

  2605. is the entire creation

  2606. has become

  2607. the Holy of Holies

  2608. as evidence

  2609. from Revelation 22

    Revelation 22:4

  2610. verse 4

  2611. where the high priest

  2612. who wore God's name

  2613. on his forehead

  2614. was the only person

  2615. in Israel

  2616. who could enter

  2617. the Holy of Holies

  2618. once a year

  2619. but in the future

  2620. all of God's people

  2621. will become high priests

  2622. with God's name

  2623. on their forehead

  2624. and standing

2625. not one day a year

  2626. but forever

  2627. in God's presence.

2628. And this Holy of Holies

  2629. will never be compromised

  2630. because it says

2631. it will never be defiled

  2632. by anything unclean.

  2633. The last verse

  2634. in chapter 21

  2635. but nothing unclean

  2636. will ever enter it

  2637. nor anyone who does

  2638. what is detestable

  2639. or false

  2640. but only those

  2641. who are written

2642. in the Lamb's book of life.

  2643. So all things

  2644. will be made new

2645. when we go home to glory

2646. there we will forever be

2647. in that great meeting place

2648. between God and his people.

  2649. So come Lord Jesus.

  2650. That's where the temple

  2651. ends

2652. where we're going to be

2653. living in the Holy of Holies

  2654. in God's very presence

  2655. forever.

  2656. So I have a song

2657. that I'd love us to sing

  2658. and it's

  2659. Praise to the Lord

  2660. the Almighty.

  2661. Calvin once said

  2662. all orthodoxy

  2663. must lead to doxology.

2664. So if we're not ready

  2665. to praise God

  2666. I'm sorry we've missed the point

  2667. so we need to

  2668. end with praising God

  2669. and then we will

  2670. time for questions

  2671. if

  2672. anybody needs to go

  2673. then feel free.

  2674. So praise the Lord

  2675. the Almighty.

  2676. Praise to the Lord

  2677. the Almighty

  2678. the King of creation

  2679. O my soul

  2680. praise Him

  2681. for He is

  2682. Thy health

  2683. and salvation

  2684. All ye who hear

  2685. now to His temple

  2686. draw near

  2687. join me

  2688. in glad adoration

  2689. praise to the Lord

  2690. who o'er all things

  2691. so wondrously reigneth

  2692. shelters thee under

  2693. His wings

  2694. e'er so gently sustaineth

  2695. Has thou not seen

  2696. how thy desires

  2697. there have been

  2698. granted in what

  2699. He ordained

  2700. Him

  2701. Praise to the Lord

  2702. who doth prosper

  2703. thy work

  2704. and defend thee

  2705. Surely His goodness

  2706. and mercy

  2707. here daily

  2708. attend thee

  2709. Ponder anew

  2710. what the Almighty

  2711. can do

  2712. if with His love

  2713. He befriend thee

  2714. Praise to the Lord

  2715. Lord all that is

  2716. in me

  2717. adore Him

  2718. All that hath life

  2719. and breath

  2720. come now

  2721. with praises

  2722. before Him

  2723. Let the Amen

  2724. sound from His people

  2725. again

  2726. Gladly forever

  2727. adore Him

  2728. Amen

  2729. Amen

  2730. Amen

  2731. What a wonderful privilege

  2732. to think about

  2733. the future glory

  2734. that we will all

  2735. experience

  2736. when Christ returns

  2737. or calls us home

  2738. So with that

  2739. questions

  2740. I'm probably just

  2741. scratching the surface here

  2742. there's a lot more

2743. that we could talk about

  2744. Yeah Tom

  2745. Thanks Tyler

  2746. I don't have a time

  2747. especially about

  2748. I mean

  2749. we're starting

  2750. walking around

  2751. the garden

  2752. and the temple

  2753. that's so beautiful

  2754. I have a question

  2755. about dimensions

  2756. Yeah

  2757. I've always been

  2758. if you could just

  2759. quickly summarize

  2760. I feel like

  2761. there's three dimensions

  2762. Exodus has dimensions

  2763. of the temple

  2764. Ezekiel has dimensions

  2765. of something

  2766. John has dimensions

  2767. of something

2768. You did touch on all this

  2769. but could you just

  2770. quickly just

  2771. boom boom boom

  2772. Yeah sure

  2773. yeah yeah

  2774. So in Exodus

  2775. the Holy of Holies

  2776. is 20 by 20 by 20 cubits

2777. which forms a perfect cube

  2778. Okay

  2779. And then

  2780. Ezekiel is prophesying

  2781. about

  2782. in exile

  2783. that God is going

  2784. to restore Jerusalem

  2785. and it's shaped

  2786. as a perfect cube

2787. And that's for the city

  2788. but he's envisioning it

  2789. as a cube

  2790. He's envisioning the city

  2791. as a cube

2792. So he's envisioning the city

  2793. actually being

  2794. the Holy of Holies

  2795. like the city

  2796. which is

  2797. fulfilled in Revelation 21

  2798. where John describes

  2799. the new Jerusalem

  2800. as a perfect cube

  2801. And actually that

  2802. Ezekiel's vision

  2803. of the bronze man

  2804. is actually

  2805. Jesus

  2806. is described

  2807. as that

  2808. I think Revelation 3 or 4

  2809. So it's an apocalyptic

  2810. future looking

  2811. forward looking

  2812. vision about

  2813. the fate that awaits

  2814. God's people

2815. and that is picked up

  2816. in Revelation

2817. So this idea of a cube

  2818. Okay

  2819. Now I

  2820. I could be wrong

  2821. I thought that

  2822. John says

  2823. Ezekiel's men

  2824. even though they are

  2825. both cubes

  2826. Yeah

  2827. And they're both

  2828. Jerusalem

2829. I think they were different

  2830. I think they have

  2831. different dimensions

  2832. Okay

  2833. Yeah so

  2834. John says

  2835. Doesn't he say

  2836. there's a translation thing

  2837. where you could say

  2838. like angelic measurements

  2839. It says

  2840. he says like

  2841. these are angelic measurements

  2842. I thought you had

  2843. I think a cubit

  2844. is a little different

  2845. Cubit versus

  2846. an angelic measurements

  2847. Yeah

  2848. Yeah

  2849. That's good

  2850. That's good

  2851. However

  2852. If you look in

  2853. Revelation

2854. Go back to your cube

  2855. Yes

  2856. I can do that

  2857. So your cube's off a little

  2858. instead of 8 by 8

  2859. you should be 12 by 12

  2860. Because you've got

  2861. the 12 stones

  2862. that are the

  2863. layers of the wall

  2864. which also relate

  2865. to the 12 stones

  2866. in the breastplate

  2867. of Greece

  2868. There has been

  2869. a lot of discussion

  2870. about just exactly

  2871. what stones

  2872. those are

  2873. because the different

  2874. languages

  2875. but they're

  2876. they're close

  2877. they're similar

  2878. but yeah

  2879. so the 12

  2880. and again

  2881. the cube

  2882. is accurate

  2883. It struck me

  2884. as interesting

  2885. when that

  2886. flashed up

  2887. I immediately

  2888. thought of

  2889. of course I would

  2890. pyrite

  2891. Pyrite is a mineral

  2892. that

  2893. forms

  2894. in the cubic

  2895. system

  2896. and it looks

  2897. without the lines

  2898. in it

  2899. exactly

  2900. like that

  2901. Yes

  2902. and it

  2903. dawned on me

  2904. that it was

  2905. very interesting

  2906. that of course

  2907. God has a sense

  2908. of humor

  2909. that he would

  2910. put that

  2911. in the ground

  2912. for us to find

  2913. here it is

  2914. this perfect

  2915. golden cube

  2916. and there it is

  2917. Of course

  2918. we're not going

  2919. to be living

  2920. inside a cube

  2921. in the ditch

  2922. but no

  2923. it's meant

  2924. I think it

  2925. symbolizes

  2926. God's presence

  2927. with his people

  2928. and you see

  2929. it's interesting

  2930. because

  2931. Revelation

  2932. 21-22

  2933. describes

  2934. the New

  2935. Jerusalem

  2936. as a garden

  2937. but also

  2938. as a city

  2939. a garden

  2940. city

  2941. temple

  2942. and then

  2943. it's shaped

  2944. the cubic

  2945. is like a

  2946. temple

  2947. but there's

  2948. no temple

  2949. because God

  2950. is there

  2951. he's using

  2952. a lot of

  2953. symbolic language

  2954. to help

  2955. people understand

  2956. what it's

  2957. going to be

  2958. like

  2959. I'm more

  2960. interested

  2961. in the walls

  2962. which are

  2963. letters

  2964. of the

  2965. different stuff

  2966. Matt

  2967. so

  2968. in case

  2969. you're taking

  2970. notes

  2971. as

  2972. Revelation

  2973. 21-17

  2974. he also

  2975. measured

  2976. its walls

  2977. 144 cubits

  2978. by human

  2979. measurement

  2980. which is also

  2981. an angel's

  2982. measurement

  2983. we need

  2984. somebody to

  2985. write a

  2986. paper on

  2987. this angel's

  2988. measurement

  2989. but I do

  2990. think

  2991. two things

  2992. strike me

  2993. about

  2994. this picture

  2995. and this is

  2996. sort of

  2997. stepping back

  2998. to a little

  2999. bit of a

  3000. meta

  3001. but

  3002. the

  3003. the biblical

  3004. theology

  3005. of the

  3006. temple

  3007. is not

  3008. linear

  3009. it's

  3010. got

  3011. multiple

  3012. streams

  3013. in it

  3014. and even

  3015. the fulfillment

  3016. of it

  3017. it's like

  3018. the temple

  3019. fulfills

  3020. it's fulfilled

  3021. in Jesus

  3022. and in the

  3023. people of God

  3024. and in the

  3025. new creation

  3026. where it's

  3027. sort of

  3028. its totality

  3029. the things

  3030. that are

  3031. that it's

  3032. pointing to

  3033. we experience

  3034. in the fullness

  3035. of it

  3036. and I think

  3037. it's helpful

  3038. for us

  3039. to just

  3040. recognize

  3041. and particularly

  3042. when we're

  3043. in the

  3044. big deal

  3045. 37

  3046. and we're

  3047. clearly in

  3048. apocalyptic

  3049. literature

  3050. it's

  3051. you know

  3052. it's helpful

  3053. for us

  3054. to see

  3055. those themes

  3056. without

  3057. trying to

  3058. be overly

  3059. modernistic

  3060. about

  3061. having to

  3062. make

  3063. the typology

  3064. all be

  3065. so particularly

  3066. precise

  3067. that we

  3068. know what

  3069. this symbolizes

  3070. in this

  3071. particular way

  3072. it's wonderful

  3073. to explore

  3074. those things

  3075. but it

  3076. strikes me

  3077. that sometimes

  3078. people get

  3079. really worked

  3080. up about

  3081. that

  3082. and honestly

  3083. that God

  3084. didn't reveal

  3085. it to be

  3086. this exceedingly

  3087. specific system

  3088. but more

  3089. he's using

  3090. this language

  3091. to communicate

  3092. broad truths

  3093. or specific

  3094. truths

  3095. in a

  3096. multi-fascative

  3097. way

  3098. yeah

  3099. yeah

  3100. if you

  3101. take it

  3102. too

  3103. literally

  3104. that word

  3105. literally

  3106. is

  3107. maybe we

  3108. should

  3109. take it

  3110. literally

  3111. versus

  3112. symbolically

  3113. or apocalyptically

  3114. it depends on

  3115. how you're going

  3116. to approach

  3117. those kind

  3118. of

  3119. those passages

  3120. but yeah

  3121. there's clearly

  3122. I mean

  3123. Ezekiel 40

  3124. is hard

  3125. but I

  3126. do

  3127. I would

  3128. I'll

  3129. put down

  3130. that I think

  3131. he's talking

  3132. about

  3133. revelation

  3134. where God

  3135. is dwelling

  3136. with his

  3137. people

  3138. but I can

  3139. be wrong

  3140. on that

  3141. who knows

  3142. I think

  3143. one of the

  3144. beautiful things

  3145. of tracing

  3146. this theme

  3147. throughout

  3148. the Bible

  3149. for me

  3150. is that

  3151. in the

  3152. beginning

  3153. God

  3154. does the

  3155. work

  3156. places us

  3157. in the

  3158. garden

  3159. gives us

  3160. of the

  3161. trees

  3162. gives us

  3163. all

  3164. you know

  3165. and walks

  3166. among us

  3167. like it's

  3168. all a

  3169. banquet

  3170. that he's

  3171. laid out

  3172. for us

  3173. right

  3174. then sin

  3175. happens

  3176. the fall

  3177. fractures

  3178. our relationship

  3179. and God

  3180. says I'm

  3181. a holy

  3182. God

  3183. this is

  3184. how you

  3185. serve me

  3186. and at

  3187. times I

  3188. think in

  3189. my Christian

  3190. walk I

  3191. thought God

  3192. was just

  3193. being crotchety

  3194. and saying

  3195. okay make

  3196. that I'm

  3197. purple

  3198. and that

  3199. I'm

  3200. purple

  3201. and it

  3202. comes to

  3203. that

  3204. wrong

  3205. but no

  3206. he's not

  3207. he's saying

  3208. this is

  3209. how you

  3210. serve me

  3211. like this

  3212. is how

  3213. you come

  3214. before me

  3215. which is

  3216. grace

  3217. to actually

  3218. describe to

  3219. us in

  3220. full detail

  3221. how to

  3222. come before

  3223. him

  3224. imperfectly

  3225. is a

  3226. grace

  3227. like that

  3228. God did

  3229. spend so

  3230. much time

  3231. laying those

  3232. things out

  3233. and then

  3234. obviously

  3235. we fail

  3236. but then

  3237. you know

  3238. but God

  3239. is still

  3240. even from

  3241. the garden

  3242. the prophecy

  3243. that Christ

  3244. is coming

  3245. like it's

  3246. there right

  3247. in the garden

  3248. that Christ

  3249. is coming

  3250. and then again

  3251. he sets a

  3252. banquet

  3253. he's setting

  3254. a banquet

  3255. out before

  3256. his disciples

  3257. or he's

  3258. inviting them

  3259. to a meal

  3260. like he's

  3261. doing it

  3262. again

  3263. then the

  3264. spirit

  3265. is given

  3266. to us

  3267. like there's

  3268. just grace

  3269. upon grace

  3270. upon grace

  3271. in this

  3272. temple theme

  3273. and then at

  3274. the end

  3275. again we're

  3276. placed in

  3277. this perfect

  3278. God does

  3279. the work

  3280. right

  3281. Jesus I go

  3282. and prepare

  3283. a place

  3284. for you

  3285. he's already

  3286. working

  3287. to set

  3288. out this

  3289. banquet

  3290. for me

  3291. and that's

  3292. one of the

  3293. most beautiful

  3294. themes of

  3295. tracing the

  3296. temple

  3297. yeah

  3298. that's so

  3299. that's

  3300. so wonderful

  3301. yeah

  3302. that is so

  3303. wonderful

  3304. and the

  3305. fact that

  3306. yeah I'm

  3307. just struck

  3308. that he

  3309. initiates

  3310. God initiates

  3311. he's saying

  3312. this is how

  3313. you approach

  3314. me and he's

  3315. doing the

  3316. work to

  3317. rebuild what

  3318. was lost

  3319. but it's gonna

  3320. be better

  3321. I mean it's

  3322. gonna be better

  3323. because the

  3324. glory of

  3325. Christ will

  3326. be our

  3327. worship is

  3328. gonna be the

  3329. lamb who's on

  3330. the throne

  3331. worthy of the

  3332. lamb who was

  3333. slain so

  3334. yeah it's a

  3335. wonderful perfect

  3336. world but the

  3337. glory of Christ

  3338. will be there

  3339. which Adam

  3340. and Eve

  3341. couldn't they

  3342. couldn't have

  3343. said that I

  3344. mean they

  3345. would God

  3346. was there but

  3347. the glory of

  3348. the lamb is

  3349. wouldn't have

  3350. been apparent

  3351. to them even

  3352. though he was

  3353. always glorious

  3354. yeah

  3355. there's so much

  3356. more we could

  3357. say about the

  3358. temple

  3359. yeah

  3360. any other

  3361. questions

  3362. all right

  3363. let me just

  3364. close in a

  3365. word prayer

  3366. and then

  3367. we'll

  3368. continue

  3369. our father

  3370. thank you for

  3371. these wonderful

  3372. truths that

  3373. you are

  3374. you are

  3375. working to

  3376. dwell with

  3377. your people

  3378. once again

  3379. and you've

  3380. done that in

  3381. Christ and

  3382. now the

  3383. spirit dwelling

  3384. in us

  3385. but Lord we

  3386. do look

  3387. forward to

  3388. the day

  3389. when we

  3390. will dwell

  3391. with you

  3392. face to

  3393. face again

  3394. and Lord

  3395. come Lord

  3396. Jesus

  3397. would you

  3398. whet our

  3399. appetite for

  3400. that great

  3401. day

  3402. in Jesus

  3403. name

  3404. amen

  3405. you

  3406. you

  3407. you

  3408. you

  3409. you

  3410. you

  3411. you
