  1. Good morning, church. It's good to see you all this morning. Would you turn with me to Isaiah

    Isaiah 41 chapter mention

  2. chapter 41 and verse 21. That is page 563 in the Pew Bible. Isaiah chapter 41, verse 21, page 563.

    Isaiah 41:21

  3. Now, what we're talking about this morning is ultimately joy. Why is it so hard to find?

  4. Where do we get it? Joy. Now, if you're new to the Bible, the chapters are actually the big numbers,

  5. and the small numbers are the verses. But it's good to know, as you think about those numbers,

  6. that the chapter and verse numbers were actually added later to the text over time to help readers

  7. navigate the passages together. But those chapter divisions don't always divide the flow of thought

  8. perfectly. So what we'll see in Isaiah is that there are some sections or some ideas that begin

  9. in the middle of one chapter and that end in the middle of another. So our chapter divisions aren't

  10. always perfectly dividing our sermon units. And that's what's true of our text today. Isaiah is

  11. turning his sights to a new topic, and his treatment of that topic doesn't end until chapter 42, verse 17.

  12. So we're going to look today at the end of chapter 41 and how that idea gets developed and brought to

  13. its conclusion in chapter 42. And then what we'll find is in the middle of 42, another idea picks up,

  14. and that's where we'll start next week. But today, here in 41 and the first half of 42,

  15. the topic is joy. How can the nations find lasting joy? That's where Isaiah is headed in this section.

  16. And you can see that for yourself if you have the Bible open and you jump ahead and look at chapter 42,

  17. verse 11. 42, 11, which is the sort of climax where Isaiah is headed in this section. 42, 11 says,

  18. let the desert and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits. Let the inhabitants

  19. of Selah sing for joy. Let them shout from the tops of the mountains. So Isaiah is looking all around,

  20. all around at the nations around him, from the deserts to the mountains, from Kedar, that's an area in the

  21. northern Arabian desert to Selah, that's a city in the far south. He sees all around all these nations.

  22. What does he see? He sees them erupting with joy, joy for the nations. Isn't that what we want for

  23. not just ourselves, but our friends and our kids and our neighbors? Real joy.

  24. Well, Isaiah here is going to give us an analysis of joy. First, why it's so hard to find, and then

  25. second, how we can actually get it. So first, let's take a look at why it's so hard to find.

  26. This is where Isaiah starts in chapter 41, verse 21. Now, just a little context for our passage.

  27. Remember, up to this point in this section of Isaiah, up to this point in chapter 40 and 41,

  28. who has Isaiah been talking to? He's really been talking directly to the people of Israel.

  29. But now he's going to turn out to the broader nations. To the people of Israel, God has been

  30. speaking to their felt problem that they're weary in exile, that they're feeling guilty because of

  31. their sin. But to the nations, it's not so much that they're feeling weary or guilty,

  32. empty, but empty. Empty. Bring out your gods, the Lord is going to say. And let me show you

  33. why you feel so empty. Let's pick up in verse 21. All right, verse 21. Let me read this for us.

  34. Set forth your case, says the Lord. Bring your proofs, says the king of Jacob. Let them, that is the

  35. nations. Bring them, that is their gods, and tell us what is to happen. Tell us the former things,

  36. what they are, that we may consider them, that we may know their outcome. Or declare to us the things

  37. to come. Tell us what is to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods. Do good or do harm,

  38. that we may be dismayed and terrified. Behold, you are nothing, and your work is less than nothing.

  39. An abomination, that is, an offense against creation, is he who chooses you.

  40. I stirred up one from the north, and he has come from the rising of the sun, and he shall call upon

  41. my name. He shall trample on rulers as on mortar, as the potter treads clay. Who declared it from the

  42. beginning that we might know, and beforehand that we might say, he is right. There was none who declared

  43. it, none who proclaimed, none who heard your words. I was the first to say to Zion, behold, here they are.

  44. And I give to Jerusalem a herald of good news. But when I look, that is when I look among the gods,

  45. there's no one. Among these, there's no counselor who, when I ask, gives an answer. Behold, they are all

  46. a delusion. Their works are nothing. Their metal images are empty wind.

  47. Okay, so if you're not feeling well, and you go to your doctor, what you want is a diagnosis, right?

  48. Why am I feeling this way? What you don't want is a doctor who says, you know, you're actually fine.

  49. Everything's okay. When everything's not okay, right? You need to hear the bad news so that you

  50. can get to the root and hopefully find a remedy. And what's happening here in verses 21 through 29

  51. is a diagnosis of what's ailing the nations. And in fact, it plays out like a court case.

  52. The Lord, the God of Israel, is calling together the nations and saying, let's have some proof.

  53. Prove to me that your gods are really gods. If they are really gods, then surely they could speak,

  54. and surely they could act, right? Verses 22 and 23, God says, they should be able to tell us

  55. something. And at the end of verse 23, they should be able to do something, even if it's good or bad,

  56. good or harm. So can they speak? Can they act? And more particularly, not just can they speak,

  57. but a little more closely, if we look at the text, God is sort of saying, can they look back at all

  58. that's come before and make sense of it? Can they give meaning to it? Verse 22, tell us the former

  59. things what they are, that we may consider them and we may know their outcome. Can these so-called gods

  60. give any sense of meaning to history? And not just that, can they look ahead and tell us where history

  61. is headed? Verse 22 picks up, declare to us, not just former things, but the things to come.

  62. Tell us what's to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods.

  63. And of course, the idols of the nations come up short. They can't speak and they can't act.

  64. They can't give any kind of meaning to the past or tell us where the future is headed.

  65. But with the Lord, the God of Israel, things are completely different. Can this God act?

  66. Yes, verse 25 tells us. Verse 25 says, he's the one who will stir up one from the north. Now,

  67. in the historical context, the reference there is to Cyrus, the coming Persian ruler who will defeat

  68. the nation of Babylon and liberate the exiled Jews in the sixth century. Okay, this God can act.

  69. Can he speak? Yes. Verses 26 and 27 say that this God foretold it all before it would happen.

  70. The Lord predicted Cyrus's conquest right here in the book of Isaiah, hundreds of years before it

  71. happened. Part of the power of this section of Isaiah is that God is telling his people over a

  72. hundred years before the fact, not just that they're going to go into exile, not just that they're going

  73. to be brought back, which practically never happened in the ancient world, but he also tells them how he's

  74. going to do it. Now, many skeptical scholars will treat these predictions in Isaiah, they'll sort of

  75. look at these predictions in Isaiah and say, hey, look, this is just proof that these chapters were

  76. written after the fact. In other words, they say, you know, they'll say that some later anonymous

  77. writer in the sixth century must have seen these things happen, Cyrus and the downfall of Babylon,

  78. and then he must have written them down and then added them to Isaiah's old book.

  79. And of course, if that's true, if that's where these texts really come from, then these parts of

  80. Isaiah don't really have much power, do they? In that case, the Lord isn't so much different than the

  81. so-called gods of the nations. But the question is, should we jump to such a quick conclusion?

  82. Should we rule out the possibility of predictive prophecy altogether? Is it simply impossible

  83. that God could have foretold these things? How do we figure that out? How do we decide?

  84. Well, you know, the fact of the matter is, is that we don't have any evidence of some anonymous

  85. sixth century pseudo-Isaiah who saw these things and wrote them down and attached them to the book

  86. of Isaiah. We don't really have any evidence of that. But we do have evidence that the God of the

  87. Bible can predict the future and make good on those predictions. Well, where do we have that evidence?

  88. Well, you know, in this very book of Isaiah, we will see God speak not just about Cyrus,

  89. who will liberate the people from their political exile, but Isaiah is also going to talk about a

  90. servant who will come after that, who will atone for the people. And other Old Testament prophets

  91. will speak of a king who is supposed to come from David's line and who will come from Bethlehem

  92. and who will first appear in northern Galilee and who will appeal not just to the Jews but to the

  93. Gentiles as well. And this one to come will be pierced and wounded for his people's transgressions.

  94. You see, hundreds of years before the fact, the God of the Bible predicted

  95. that Jesus, the Christ, would come. And God has made good on all of those promises.

  96. So if we follow the evidence, where does it lead? Which view has the best evidence? That there was

  97. an anonymous writer in the sixth century who could have wrote things down and then attach them to

  98. Isaiah? Do we have any evidence for that? Not really. But we have a lot of evidence that the God

  99. who created all things and who is the Lord of history can make promises and fulfill them.

  100. So for following the evidence, we find that maybe it's not so hard to believe that God,

  101. through Isaiah, can predict the coming of one like Cyrus who will liberate his people.

  102. But of course, the problem with the nations is that they don't know this God.

  103. They serve gods that aren't really gods at all. In fact, at best, they're just personifications

  104. of the created world. That's why verse 24 says to these so-called gods, look at verse 24, he says,

  105. Behold, you are nothing, and your work is less than nothing. An abomination, that is an offense

  106. against a created order, is he who chooses you. You know, to take, to take some aspect of the created

  107. world and hold it up as a God, right, to take a good thing and make it an ultimate thing, which is

  108. what idolatry is. Isaiah says that's an offense against creation itself. Created things aren't

  109. meant to be worshipped that way. And what is the outcome when we do? We'll look at verse 29.

  110. Behold, they're all a delusion. Their works are nothing. Their metal images are empty wind.

  111. Emptiness is the outcome. Now, it's easy, of course, to look at the ancient world and think

  112. how foolish they were to worship idols, right? How empty all of that was.

  113. But you know, the human heart always worships something. It's impossible for our hearts to not

  114. have some ultimate concern, some driving deep love, something that we elevate to ultimate in our lives.

  115. We always worship something. And that something will either be a created thing or the creator.

  116. There's really no third way.

  117. So whereas today our gods, you know, we don't call our gods by names like Marduk,

  118. like they did in the ancient world, or Zeus in ancient Greece, or Odin, you know, like the old

  119. Norse gods. Even though we don't give our gods those names, right, we're still worshipers.

  120. And our so-called gods leave us just as empty and just as without joy.

  121. What are some of the gods we might worship today? Well, think of the god of success.

  122. It's easy to worship success, isn't it? After all, who doesn't want to be successful? To be liked,

  123. to be known, to be influential. And so, in chasing success, in worshiping it, we study hard, we work

  124. hard, we make the right social connections, we climb the ladder, we pay our dues, we take our risks.

  125. And you know what the outcome is? Some people actually make it. But then what?

  126. It's emptiness.

  127. The irony is, if you worship success, you never feel like you've truly made it.

  128. It's always emptiness in the end.

  129. Now, of course, success, right? That's a pretty, that's a pretty base god, isn't it? Everybody knows

  130. you shouldn't worship success, duh. After all, we think it's relationships, right? It's love that

  131. really matters. We don't want to build our lives around success. We want to build our lives around

  132. relationships, around finding a partner, or starting a family. So maybe if I just get the right spouse,

  133. or the right kids, or I find the right community, then I'll make it, then I'll be okay.

  134. But again, the irony is, if you worship family, if you worship relationships,

  135. it'll tear your relationships apart and leave you empty.

  136. Besides, no spouse, right? No family, no community could ever meet those expectations.

  137. If you're looking to another person to make you ultimately happy and ultimately okay,

  138. that person should run the other way, right?

  139. And look around.

  140. You know, most of us who move from partner to partner to partner or community to community to

  141. community searching for it, we're not happy. We're empty.

  142. We think we're so much more evolved than the ancient world.

  143. But are we?

  144. You know, in the ancient world, they had gods of power and family and love.

  145. They had names for them, but that's what they were.

  146. We worship the same things. We just use different names.

  147. But though the names have changed, the result is the same.

  148. We're empty too.

  149. Why is joy so hard to find?

  150. Because taking a good thing and making it into an ultimate thing leads to emptiness.

  151. But what does the Lord do about it?

  152. Does the Lord, the God of Israel, the one true God, just leave us, the nations, in our emptiness?

  153. He could, you know.

  154. He could say, that's what you've chosen.

  155. You can have what you choose.

  156. And He could continue to let us worship created things.

  157. And He could let us just continue to reap the empty wind.

  158. What does God do about it?

  159. What hope is there for the nations?

  160. What hope is there for us, for you and me?

  161. And that brings us to the next part of our text.

  162. You know, you notice in verse 42, or excuse me, in verse 24,

  163. in verse 24 of chapter 41, God says,

  164. Behold, the false gods are nothing.

  165. And then in verse 29, He says,

  166. Behold, they're all a delusion.

  167. But then chapter 42 opens,

  168. and God says, Behold, again.

  169. Behold.

  170. But this time,

  171. Behold my servant.

  172. Behold the remedy

  173. to your emptiness.

  174. Behold the one who brings real joy.

  175. Let's pick up and read chapter 42,

  176. verses 1 through 9.

  177. Behold my servant,

  178. whom I uphold,

  179. my chosen,

  180. in whom my soul delights.

  181. I have put my spirit upon him.

  182. He will bring forth

  183. justice

  184. to the nations.

  185. He will not cry aloud,

  186. or lift up his voice,

  187. or make it heard in the street.

  188. A bruised reed

  189. he will not break,

  190. and a faintly burning wick

  191. he will not quench.

  192. He will faithfully

  193. bring forth justice.

  194. He will not grow faint

  195. or be discouraged

  196. till he has established

  197. justice in the earth,

  198. and the coastlands

  199. wait for his law.

  200. Thus says God,

  201. the Lord,

  202. who created the heavens

  203. and stretched them out,

  204. who spread out the earth

  205. and what comes from it,

  206. who gives breath

  207. to the people on it,

  208. and spirit to those

  209. who walk in it.

  210. I am the Lord.

  211. I have called you,

  212. and you there

  213. refers to the servant

  214. in verse 1.

  215. I have called you

  216. in righteousness.

  217. I will take you

  218. by the hand

  219. and keep you,

  220. and I will give you,

  221. this servant,

  222. I will give you

  223. as a covenant

  224. for the people,

  225. a light for the nations,

  226. to open the eyes

  227. that are blind,

  228. to bring out

  229. the prisoners

  230. from the dungeon,

  231. from the prison,

  232. those who sit in darkness.

  233. I am the Lord.

  234. That is my name.

  235. My glory I give

  236. to no other,

  237. nor my praise

  238. to carved idols.

  239. Behold,

  240. the former things

  241. have come to pass,

  242. and new things now

  243. I declare

  244. before they spring forth.

  245. I tell you of them.

  246. So the bridge,

  247. the bridge between

  248. the emptiness

  249. at the end

  250. of chapter 41

  251. and the joy

  252. that we looked at

  253. at the very beginning,

  254. the joy for all nations

  255. in chapter 41,

  256. verse 11,

  257. the bridge

  258. is right here

  259. in verses 1 through 9.

  260. This is how God does it.

  261. This is how God

  262. can take you and me

  263. from emptiness to joy.

  264. But notice,

  265. God has to do it.

  266. You know,

  267. it's easy to think,

  268. well,

  269. if my problem

  270. is idolatry,

  271. if I'm worshiping

  272. the wrong things,

  273. then I'll just start

  274. worshiping the right things.

  275. And on the surface,

  276. that sounds obviously right,

  277. right?

  278. Stop doing this,

  279. start doing that,

  280. and you're good.

  281. But the problem is,

  282. that way of thinking

  283. underestimates

  284. how deep

  285. our problem

  286. really is.

  287. We can't

  288. actually

  289. save ourselves

  290. that way.

  291. Our hearts

  292. are like

  293. little

  294. idol factories,

  295. and they just keep

  296. churning them out.

  297. And if we turn

  298. from one,

  299. we'll fall

  300. into another.

  301. And if we try

  302. to worship

  303. the true God,

  304. we constantly

  305. fall away.

  306. You see,

  307. what we need

  308. is more than just

  309. a little bit of knowledge

  310. and a little push

  311. in the right direction.

  312. What we actually

  313. need

  314. is to be

  315. liberated.

  316. In verse 7,

  317. God says,

  318. I didn't come to give you

  319. a little knowledge

  320. and a little push

  321. in the right direction.

  322. I've come

  323. to set you free,

  324. to open the eyes

  325. that are blind,

  326. and to bring out

  327. the prisoners

  328. from the dungeon.

  329. You can't make

  330. this right,

  331. God says.

  332. I have to make it right.

  333. You can't simply

  334. wake up one day

  335. and say,

  336. you know,

  337. I'm going to promise

  338. to follow God today.

  339. I'm going to make

  340. a covenant

  341. to stop worshiping

  342. the wrong things

  343. and start worshiping

  344. the right things.

  345. God says,

  346. how long will you

  347. keep that promise

  348. of yours,

  349. that covenant

  350. of yours?

  351. No,

  352. God says,

  353. I have to be

  354. the one

  355. who makes

  356. the covenant.

  357. I've got to make

  358. the promise.

  359. I have to seal

  360. the relationship.

  361. There's no other way.

  362. You can't make

  363. things right.

  364. I have to make

  365. things right.

  366. And how does

  367. God do it?

  368. Look at verse 1.

  369. Behold my servant

  370. whom I uphold,

  371. my chosen

  372. in whom my soul

  373. delights.

  374. I have put my

  375. spirit upon him.

  376. He will bring

  377. forth justice

  378. to the nations.

  379. Justice.

  380. To a world

  381. where everything

  382. has gotten

  383. mixed up

  384. and gone wrong,

  385. this servant

  386. of the Lord

  387. will come,

  388. Isaiah says,

  389. and put things

  390. right.

  391. He will bring

  392. forth justice.

  393. Justice,

  394. a writing

  395. of what's wrong.

  396. You can't make

  397. it right,

  398. but he can.

  399. Three times

  400. the word justice

  401. is used here

  402. in these first

  403. four verses.

  404. And the word justice

  405. in Isaiah

  406. means not just

  407. God's declaration

  408. of what's right

  409. and true,

  410. but God's

  411. restoration

  412. of what's right

  413. and true.

  414. Justice in the

  415. Bible is sort of

  416. like the opposite

  417. of chaos.

  418. You know,

  419. you remember

  420. chapter 41,

  421. it ends,

  422. speaking of empty

  423. wind, right?

  424. That's where chapter

  425. 41 ends,

  426. empty wind.

  427. And the Hebrew

  428. word there,

  429. one of the Hebrew

  430. word there is

  431. actually tohu,

  432. which is a word

  433. that sort of

  434. means what it

  435. sounds,

  436. tohu.

  437. It's the same

  438. word used in

  439. the opening

  440. verses of Genesis

  441. to describe

  442. the unformed

  443. creation,

  444. formless and void.

  445. It's just tohu.

  446. It's as if Isaiah

  447. is saying,

  448. look,

  449. idolatry returns

  450. us to the

  451. nothingness and

  452. emptiness of God's

  453. creation.

  454. But God's

  455. justice

  456. is the right

  457. ordering of

  458. life.

  459. When the

  460. Creator speaks

  461. in Genesis 1,

  462. what happens?

  463. The formless

  464. takes form

  465. and the

  466. emptiness

  467. teems with

  468. life.

  469. This is

  470. justice

  471. in the Bible,

  472. the right

  473. ordering

  474. of life.

  475. If

  476. idolatry

  477. sinks us

  478. into chaos,

  479. the servant

  480. comes and

  481. at last

  482. brings justice,

  483. the healing,

  484. restoring order

  485. of the

  486. Creator.

  487. And He's

  488. doing this

  489. not just to

  490. Israel,

  491. but to the

  492. nations in

  493. verse 1.

  494. He's going to

  495. bring forth

  496. justice to

  497. the nations,

  498. to all of

  499. us.

  500. And is He

  501. only going to

  502. do it

  503. halfway?

  504. No,

  505. He's going to

  506. carry it

  507. through faithfully,

  508. verse 3 says.

  509. And He's not

  510. going to stop

  511. until it's

  512. established,

  513. verse 4 says.

  514. Through the

  515. agency of

  516. this servant,

  517. the Lord is

  518. going to put

  519. right what we

  520. could never

  521. put right.

  522. Into the

  523. sea of our

  524. idolatry and

  525. emptiness,

  526. the servant

  527. comes to

  528. restore and

  529. repair and

  530. ultimately to

  531. put us right

  532. with God.

  533. That's what the

  534. Lord says of

  535. this servant in

  536. verse 6.

  537. If you look

  538. again at verse 6,

  539. He says,

  540. I will take

  541. you by the

  542. hand and

  543. keep you,

  544. and I will

  545. give you as

  546. a covenant

  547. for the

  548. people.

  549. In other

  550. words, in

  551. and through

  552. this servant,

  553. the nations,

  554. the nations

  555. who didn't

  556. know God,

  557. who were far

  558. from God,

  559. without God,

  560. and without

  561. hope in the

  562. world, trapped

  563. in the emptiness

  564. of idolatry,

  565. in and through

  566. this servant,

  567. those nations

  568. would be sealed

  569. in a right

  570. relationship with

  571. the one true

  572. God, held

  573. by Him in a

  574. covenant, in a

  575. binding promise.

  576. And when you

  577. look at the

  578. Old Testament,

  579. the heart, the

  580. very heartbeat

  581. of the covenant,

  582. of God's covenant

  583. in the Old Testament

  584. can be summed up

  585. in this phrase,

  586. a phrase that God

  587. says to His people

  588. over and over

  589. again, what is

  590. the covenant?

  591. It's this.

  592. God says, I will

  593. be your God,

  594. and you will be

  595. my people.

  596. That binding,

  597. intimate,

  598. sealed relationship

  599. with God.

  600. In and through

  601. this servant,

  602. the nations who

  603. are far off

  604. will be brought

  605. near.

  606. Though they had

  607. spent themselves

  608. in the service

  609. of false gods

  610. and reaped the

  611. wind of emptiness,

  612. God says,

  613. through my servant,

  614. I'll be your God,

  615. and you'll be

  616. my people.

  617. That's the justice

  618. He will bring.

  619. That's the covenant

  620. He will make,

  621. and that will bring

  622. joy.

  623. But who is

  624. this servant?

  625. Who's the one

  626. who can bring us

  627. from emptiness

  628. to joy

  629. through the justice

  630. that He brings?

  631. Who's the one

  632. who can liberate us

  633. from the prison

  634. of false gods

  635. and seal us

  636. in a covenant

  637. with the one true God?

  638. Well,

  639. Isaiah doesn't

  640. tell us here.

  641. He just says

  642. He's coming.

  643. One day,

  644. He'll come.

  645. And when He comes,

  646. He's going to be

  647. really different

  648. than what you

  649. might have expected.

  650. When He comes,

  651. He's not going to be

  652. brash and loud

  653. and self-promoting

  654. like the rulers

  655. of this world.

  656. Look at verse 2.

  657. He will not cry aloud

  658. or lift up His voice

  659. in the street,

  660. lift up His voice

  661. or make it heard

  662. in the street,

  663. right?

  664. He's not going to

  665. parade around

  666. making a big show

  667. brash and loud

  668. and self-promoting.

  669. Rather,

  670. He will be gentle

  671. and He will be good.

  672. A bruised reed

  673. He will not break

  674. and a faintly burning wick

  675. He will not quench.

  676. And you know,

  677. hundreds of years later,

  678. after Isaiah wrote

  679. these words,

  680. when Jesus Christ

  681. arrived in Galilee,

  682. preaching

  683. and healing

  684. and announcing

  685. God's kingdom,

  686. it all came true.

  687. Here was the one

  688. who had the power

  689. to cast out demons,

  690. but the gentleness

  691. to meet the most

  692. troubled

  693. and burdened

  694. sinner,

  695. the most afflicted

  696. and weary soul

  697. and take them

  698. into His hands

  699. and give them peace.

  700. How true

  701. Isaiah's words

  702. really were

  703. when we look at Jesus,

  704. a bruised reed

  705. He will not break

  706. and a faintly burning wick

  707. He will not quench.

  708. Friend,

  709. how empty

  710. do you feel this morning?

  711. Do you feel bruised

  712. and weak?

  713. You know what a reed is,

  714. right?

  715. A reed is like

  716. a long piece of grass

  717. down by the water,

  718. you know,

  719. these sort of long,

  720. slender things

  721. that grow.

  722. And they're really tender,

  723. right?

  724. And they're really easily

  725. snapped and broken

  726. and bruised.

  727. Is that you today?

  728. Or do you feel like,

  729. do you feel like

  730. your light

  731. is about to go out,

  732. right?

  733. That's a faintly burning wick,

  734. right?

  735. You know,

  736. if you have a candle

  737. in your house

  738. and it's burning

  739. and then you blow it out,

  740. right?

  741. And then there's

  742. a little ember right there

  743. just sort of faintly,

  744. faintly burning

  745. and smoking,

  746. smoldering,

  747. just barely glowing.

  748. Is that you today?

  749. Do you feel like

  750. your light

  751. is about to go out?

  752. Friends,

  753. then listen

  754. to the message of Isaiah.

  755. listen to the words

  756. of God for you.

  757. That Jesus Christ,

  758. the servant of the Lord,

  759. has come

  760. for you.

  761. You might feel

  762. useless

  763. like a battered

  764. and bruised reed,

  765. but you're not useless

  766. to Him.

  767. And you might feel

  768. like you've gone too far,

  769. you've strayed too far,

  770. like your wick

  771. is about to go out,

  772. but you're not

  773. too far gone for Him.

  774. None are too weak

  775. or too far gone

  776. for the Lord Jesus.

  777. Though you

  778. might grow faint

  779. or be discouraged,

  780. as Isaiah says

  781. in verse 4,

  782. He will not grow faint

  783. or be discouraged

  784. till He has established

  785. justice in the earth.

  786. Read the stories

  787. of the Gospels,

  788. friends.

  789. Jesus faced

  790. every trial.

  791. He actually was

  792. bruised and broken.

  793. He was quenched.

  794. He descended

  795. into the godless chaos

  796. of the crucifixion

  797. when everyone around Him

  798. was worshiping

  799. a false God

  800. and put the one true God

  801. in their midst

  802. to death.

  803. He descended

  804. into that godless chaos.

  805. Why?

  806. To bring justice

  807. to the nations.

  808. So that you can be

  809. put right.

  810. So that God's justice

  811. might be established

  812. for you

  813. so that your sins

  814. can be put off

  815. and so that His righteousness

  816. can be put on.

  817. He went down

  818. into sorrow

  819. so that you can know joy.

  820. Real joy.

  821. The joy of knowing God.

  822. And you know, friends,

  823. if this was true of Jesus,

  824. then it must also be true

  825. of those of us

  826. who follow Him.

  827. The ministry of Jesus

  828. was one of strength

  829. exercised in gentleness

  830. and in restoration.

  831. Bruised reeds

  832. were handled with care.

  833. Faintly burning wicks

  834. were nursed back to flame.

  835. Jesus came as a servant.

  836. So as you come

  837. to trust Him,

  838. know

  839. that He will hold you

  840. tenderly in His hands.

  841. And as we seek

  842. to follow Him,

  843. let that be true

  844. for us as well.

  845. Let us be servants.

  846. And may we find

  847. that His joy

  848. becomes complete

  849. in us.

  850. Let's pray together.

  851. Our Father in Heaven,

  852. as we take a minute

  853. and just pause

  854. in the quiet

  855. of this moment

  856. to be before You,

  857. our Creator,

  858. and to take deep breaths

  859. of air

  860. that You have provided

  861. and to just sense

  862. our bodies

  863. that You have given to us.

  864. God, help us to see

  865. our need

  866. for a Savior.

  867. Help us to see

  868. the ways in which

  869. the false gods

  870. that we worship

  871. under whatever name

  872. we give them

  873. have left us empty.

  874. But help us to see

  875. now, Father,

  876. the substance

  877. and the justice

  878. and the joy

  879. of Jesus,

  880. our Savior.

  881. by Your Holy Spirit,

  882. allow our hearts

  883. to reach out

  884. to Him in faith

  885. and in grasping Him

  886. to know

  887. that we are taken

  888. hold of by You.

  889. We pray this

  890. in His name.

  891. Amen.

  892. Amen.

  893. Amen.

  894. Amen.

  895. Amen.

  896. Amen.

  897. Amen.

  898. Amen.

  899. Amen.

  900. Amen.

  901. Amen.

  902. Amen.

  903. Amen.

  904. Amen.

  905. Amen.

  906. Amen.

  907. Amen.

  908. Amen.

  909. Amen.

  910. Amen.

  911. Amen.

  912. Amen.

  913. Amen.

  914. Amen.
