  1. my soul.

  2. You may be seated.

  3. Well, good morning, church.

  4. It's good to be with you all this morning.

  5. Would you turn with me to Isaiah chapter 49, verse 14.

    Isaiah 49:14

  6. Isaiah chapter 49, verse 14.

    Isaiah 49:14

  7. That's page 571 in the Pew Bible.

  8. Page 571, Isaiah chapter 49.

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  9. If you're visiting this morning, we're glad you're here.

  10. Given the heat today, our sermon will be a little shorter than normal.

  11. So if you're thinking, wow, that went by fast, don't worry.

  12. Once the weather cools off, we'll spend more time diving into God's Word.

  13. Or you might think, wow, I hope it's hot every Sunday because that sermon went by really fast.

  14. But, well, as it is this morning, we'll keep it on the shorter side.

  15. So Isaiah chapter 49, verse 14.

    Isaiah 49:14

  16. Let me pray for us as we come to God's Word today.

  17. God, grant us today hearts that hear and receive your Word.

  18. Encourage us and comfort us, God, with your grace and love.

  19. In the name of Jesus we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. All right.

  22. Verse 14 of Isaiah chapter 49 says this.

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  23. But Zion said, the Lord has forsaken me.

  24. My Lord has forgotten me.

  25. But Zion said, the Lord has forsaken me.

  26. My Lord has forgotten me.

  27. Have you ever been so downtrodden, so discouraged,

  28. that you just can't seem to believe that God loves you, that He remembers you?

  29. That's the situation we jump into here in Isaiah 49, 14.

  30. Last week, Pastor Matt opened up for us the beginning of chapter 49,

  31. which was all about the glorious servant Messiah who would come

  32. and bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

  33. What good news!

  34. And yet, here the people, upon hearing this good news,

  35. are so downtrodden, so discouraged, so despondent,

  36. that they just can't believe it.

  37. But Zion said, the Lord has forsaken me.

  38. My Lord has forgotten me.

  39. They look at their circumstances and they think,

  40. God's forgotten us.

  41. Perhaps you're going through something right now.

  42. A job loss, a difficult relationship,

  43. a health crisis, a spiritual crisis.

  44. And you think, the Lord's forsaken me.

  45. My Lord has forgotten me.

  46. Well, what is it that God wants to tell us today

  47. through this passage of Isaiah?

  48. Well, the word that He had for Old Testament Israel then

  49. and the word that He has for you and me today is this.

  50. Look at verse 15.

  51. Can a woman forget her nursing child,

  52. that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?

  53. Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.

  54. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.

  55. Your walls are continually before me.

  56. To our downtrodden hearts that just can't hear and believe God's love,

  57. God comes tenderly and He says,

  58. Look at that nursing mother holding her child tenderly in her arms.

  59. Do you think that mother could forget her child?

  60. Now ask any mother here and I'm sure they'd tell you the same thing.

  61. Never!

  62. You would never forget that.

  63. I could never forget.

  64. And the Lord says,

  65. I'm like a nursing mother.

  66. And if possible, even greater.

  67. I will not forget you.

  68. Like a diamond carving the most solid of stones.

  69. Like a diamond carving its way into granite.

  70. The Lord says,

  71. I've engraved you on the palms of my hands.

  72. You know, it's funny.

  73. You can sort of always see your hands, can't you?

  74. If you're kind of going about your day.

  75. They're always sort of there in front of you.

  76. And if you tattoo your hands,

  77. you always see it.

  78. And that's why the next line says,

  79. Your walls are continually before me.

  80. City walls in the ancient world defined and protected the city that they surrounded.

  81. So God is saying poetically here,

  82. All that you are,

  83. all that you need,

  84. I have it constantly in my mind.

  85. So to those of us feeling forgotten,

  86. this passage affirms in the most unrestrained way

  87. that God will never forget His people.

  88. But you know, God doesn't stop there.

  89. He doesn't just sort of affirm His unforgetting love.

  90. He unpacks it.

  91. He wants to come with a healing word,

  92. with a comforting word,

  93. to those who are discouraged and despondent and bitter in soul.

  94. So in the rest of chapter 49 and 50,

  95. He drills down into this love.

  96. He sort of picks up the diamond of His love

  97. and He starts turning it around

  98. so the rays might continue to reflect out of it

  99. and capture our gaze

  100. and so that our downtrodden hearts might believe it again,

  101. this love that He affirms for us.

  102. So first God says,

  103. I see your losses

  104. and I will restore you.

  105. This is verses 17 through 21.

  106. God says,

  107. I see your losses

  108. and I will restore you.

  109. In verse 17,

  110. you'll notice there's an ESV footnote

  111. if you're looking at the text open,

  112. right there in verse 17.

  113. It's saying that the word builders

  114. could also be translated children

  115. and I actually think given the context,

  116. that's a better read.

  117. So listen to me read verses 17 through 21,

  118. picking up that alternate reading.

  119. Here God speaks to His bereaved people

  120. who feel like they've lost everything

  121. and He says to them,

  122. look, your children make haste.

  123. Your destroyers and those who laid you waste

  124. go out from you.

  125. Lift up your eyes around and see.

  126. They all gather.

  127. They come to you.

  128. As I live, declares the Lord,

  129. you shall put them all on as an ornament.

  130. You shall bind them on as a bride does.

  131. Surely your waste places

  132. and your devastated land,

  133. surely now you'll be too narrow

  134. for your inhabitants.

  135. Those who swallowed you up

  136. will be far away.

  137. The children of your bereavement

  138. will yet say in your ears,

  139. this place is too narrow for me.

  140. Make room for me to dwell in.

  141. Then you will say in your heart,

  142. who has borne me these?

  143. I was bereaved and barren,

  144. exiled and put away.

  145. But who's brought up these?

  146. Behold, I was left alone

  147. from where have these come?

  148. So do you catch the imagery here?

  149. God's people are pictured

  150. like a childless parent here,

  151. bereaved and empty.

  152. But God says,

  153. I see your losses

  154. and I will restore.

  155. I'll bring your sons

  156. and your daughters back to you

  157. and they will fill your land

  158. to such an extent

  159. that you'll think

  160. you've run out of room.

  161. It's as if the Lord comes to us

  162. and says,

  163. do you see the empty rooms

  164. of your home?

  165. Do you see those empty rooms

  166. that you wish were filled

  167. with the laughter of children?

  168. Do you see those empty rooms

  169. that you wish were filled

  170. with the dirty dishes

  171. and the played with toys

  172. of a vibrant and bustling family?

  173. Take a look at those empty rooms.

  174. God says, I'm going to fill them.

  175. I'm going to fill them so full

  176. that you'll think

  177. you'll need an addition

  178. just to fit them all in.

  179. Those empty rooms

  180. that feel so spacious

  181. and cavernous,

  182. now I'm going to fill them

  183. with so much life

  184. that the rafters will feel

  185. like they're going to break.

  186. Now this promise

  187. was spoken to a people in exile,

  188. but the fulfillment

  189. is so much greater

  190. than the historical return

  191. from exile in the 6th century.

  192. As miraculous as that return was,

  193. this promise had a scope,

  194. a spiritual scope

  195. that was so much greater.

  196. After all,

  197. the return in the 6th century

  198. didn't break the bounds

  199. of the land of Israel.

  200. The return was pretty meager at first.

  201. No, this promise

  202. that God was making here

  203. was about something greater.

  204. It was about the full flowering

  205. of the gospel,

  206. the pouring out

  207. of every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  208. It's about the sovereignty

  209. of our good God

  210. restoring what the locusts have eaten,

  211. not just in this life,

  212. but in the life to come

  213. when He will make all things new.

  214. You see, Christian,

  215. there's no loss

  216. that you experience in this life

  217. that God will not heal

  218. and restore 100-fold.

  219. Will you experience

  220. some of that restoration

  221. in this life?

  222. Many times, yes!

  223. But none of us

  224. will experience it

  225. in the full

  226. until we see

  227. the new creation dawn

  228. and we are raised

  229. anew with Christ.

  230. You know,

  231. the older I get,

  232. and I'm not that old,

  233. the more I long for heaven,

  234. to be honest.

  235. Not because I don't love

  236. this world,

  237. I do,

  238. but because I know

  239. and what God's Word tells us

  240. is that what's coming

  241. is so much greater.

  242. the consummation,

  243. the healing,

  244. the restoration

  245. of all that sin

  246. has devoured and taken away.

  247. God's love, friend,

  248. sees your losses.

  249. They're not lost on Him.

  250. He sees your losses

  251. and He says,

  252. I'm going to restore.

  253. That's how much I love you.

  254. But the Lord goes on

  255. to those of us

  256. who are so discouraged

  257. and so downcast

  258. and so despondent

  259. that we can't believe

  260. God loves us.

  261. He says,

  262. not only do I see your losses

  263. and I'll restore you,

  264. God says,

  265. I see your enemies

  266. and I'll fight for you.

  267. This is verses 22 through 26.

  268. God says,

  269. I see your enemies

  270. and I will fight for you.

  271. Let's pick up in verse 22.

  272. Thus says the Lord God,

  273. Behold,

  274. I will lift up my hand

  275. to the nations

  276. and raise my signal

  277. to the peoples

  278. and they shall bring

  279. your sons in their arms

  280. and your daughters

  281. shall be carried

  282. on their shoulders.

  283. Kings shall be

  284. your foster fathers

  285. and their queens

  286. your nursing mothers

  287. with their faces

  288. to the ground.

  289. They shall bow down to you

  290. and lick the dust

  291. of your feet.

  292. Then you will know

  293. that I am the Lord.

  294. Those who wait for me

  295. shall not be put to shame.

  296. Can the prey

  297. be taken from the mighty

  298. or the captives

  299. of a tyrant

  300. be rescued?

  301. Thus says the Lord,

  302. Even the captives

  303. of the mighty

  304. shall be taken

  305. and the prey

  306. of the tyrant

  307. be rescued.

  308. For I will contend

  309. with those

  310. who contend with you

  311. and I will save

  312. your children.

  313. I'll make your oppressors

  314. eat their own flesh

  315. and they shall be drunk

  316. with their own blood

  317. as with wine.

  318. Then all flesh

  319. shall know

  320. that I am the Lord

  321. your Savior

  322. and your Redeemer,

  323. the mighty one

  324. of Jacob.

  325. So the picture here

  326. is of a God

  327. who stands up

  328. for his oppressed people.

  329. They're trampled,

  330. they're used

  331. and abused

  332. and God says,

  333. I see your enemies

  334. and I'll fight for you.

  335. And this imagery

  336. is strong,

  337. isn't it?

  338. The nations here,

  339. Israel's enemies,

  340. God says,

  341. they'll bow down to you

  342. and lick the dust

  343. of your feet.

  344. In other words,

  345. God says,

  346. they're going to be

  347. a complete reversal.

  348. The first shall be last

  349. and the last shall be first.

  350. And in verse 26,

  351. there's talk of

  352. the oppressors

  353. eating their own flesh

  354. and being drunk

  355. with their own blood.

  356. And that's a graphic image,

  357. is it not,

  358. of utter self-destruction.

  359. Like a skyscraper

  360. kind of crumbling

  361. from the inside out,

  362. collapsing under the weight

  363. of its own decay

  364. and deterioration.

  365. These enemies

  366. seem so powerful,

  367. so invincible.

  368. Those who trample you

  369. underfoot

  370. despise you

  371. and use you.

  372. But God says,

  373. I see

  374. and I know.

  375. You might feel like

  376. he's forgotten you,

  377. but far from it

  378. he will fight for you.

  379. And then in verse 24,

  380. this promise of God,

  381. it just seems too impossible

  382. to believe that people say,

  383. can the prey be taken

  384. from the mighty

  385. or captives of a tyrant

  386. be rescued?

  387. You know,

  388. can a squirrel be saved

  389. from the jaws of a wolf?

  390. I don't think you'll find

  391. anything left

  392. after you pry that thing

  393. from its mouth.

  394. Can an evil tyrant

  395. be expected

  396. to just release

  397. their captives?

  398. And humanly speaking,

  399. the answer is no.

  400. Perhaps some of the opposition

  401. you feel up against

  402. seems just as insurmountable.

  403. The ravages of sin,

  404. the rain of the wicked,

  405. and the ever-present

  406. shadow of death.

  407. But God says,

  408. listen,

  409. I will contend

  410. with those

  411. who contend with you.

  412. So I had the privilege

  413. of growing up

  414. with two older brothers.

  415. Not just one,

  416. but two.

  417. And of course,

  418. you know,

  419. there is a cost

  420. to being the youngest

  421. of three boys.

  422. Whenever my brothers

  423. wanted to try out

  424. a new wrestling move

  425. that we had just watched

  426. on WWF,

  427. guess who was the recipient?

  428. You know,

  429. when Jimmy the Superfly Snooka

  430. jumped off the top rope

  431. to body slam

  432. and pin his opponent,

  433. you guessed it.

  434. I was often the opponent,

  435. right?

  436. But I say I had the privilege

  437. of growing up

  438. with two older brothers.

  439. Because out in the world,

  440. you know,

  441. when we were done

  442. sort of playing,

  443. I knew that anyone

  444. who wanted to contend

  445. with me

  446. would have to contend

  447. with them.

  448. They weren't going

  449. to let anyone mess

  450. with their little brother.

  451. They would step in

  452. and fight for me.

  453. Now,

  454. maybe you didn't have

  455. older brothers like that.

  456. But here's the good news.

  457. You do have a God

  458. like that.

  459. This is the God

  460. who contends

  461. for his people,

  462. who fights for them.

  463. This is the God

  464. who enters the battle

  465. against sin and death,

  466. who triumphs

  467. and who wins the victory

  468. on our behalf.

  469. And so do our downtrodden hearts,

  470. our hearts that feel forsaken

  471. and forgotten.

  472. God comes and says,

  473. I'll never forget you.

  474. I see your losses

  475. and I promise to restore.

  476. I see your enemies

  477. and I promise to fight for you.

  478. But our text from Isaiah

  479. goes even deeper.

  480. It's tempting to doubt

  481. God's love

  482. when we've experienced loss.

  483. Sometimes we experience

  484. grave loss

  485. and feel forgotten.

  486. And it's tempting

  487. to doubt God's love

  488. when we've experienced defeat,

  489. when we're feeling trampled

  490. and ridiculed

  491. and we feel forgotten.

  492. But you know,

  493. these external circumstances,

  494. real as they are,

  495. they perhaps don't touch

  496. the deepest place

  497. of our despair,

  498. the deepest place

  499. of our doubt.

  500. Because the heart

  501. that cries out,

  502. the Lord has forsaken me,

  503. my Lord has forgotten me,

  504. the heart that makes

  505. that cry,

  506. from the most despondent place,

  507. from the most

  508. kind of wretched place,

  509. is the heart that does so

  510. not merely because

  511. of external losses

  512. or because of external opposition.

  513. The deepest despairing

  514. of God's love

  515. comes from a place

  516. of our own internal failures.

  517. when our sins

  518. and our wrongs

  519. feel like a wave

  520. crashing over our heads,

  521. then our heart cries out

  522. with despair,

  523. surely the Lord

  524. has forsaken me

  525. and my Lord

  526. has forgotten me.

  527. Not because of what

  528. others have done to me,

  529. but because of what

  530. I have done

  531. or failed to do

  532. before God.

  533. And in that bitter place

  534. of despair,

  535. we think,

  536. surely God

  537. has forgotten me.

  538. But listen,

  539. as our text continues

  540. into chapter 50,

  541. God says,

  542. I don't just see

  543. your losses

  544. and I don't just

  545. see your enemies,

  546. but I even see

  547. your sin

  548. and I haven't

  549. forgotten you.

  550. I see your sin

  551. and I will

  552. redeem you.

  553. Let's pick up

  554. in Isaiah chapter 50,

    Isaiah 50:1

  555. verse 1.

  556. Thus says the Lord,

  557. where is your mother's

  558. certificate of divorce

  559. with which I sent her away?

  560. Or which of my creditors

  561. is it

  562. to whom I have sold you?

  563. Now,

  564. the answer

  565. to these rhetorical questions

  566. is that

  567. there is no certificate

  568. of divorce.

  569. God has

  570. no creditors.

  571. How could the God

  572. of the universe

  573. owe anyone anything?

  574. The people in exile

  575. might feel

  576. utterly forsaken,

  577. but God has not

  578. given up

  579. His covenant love

  580. with them.

  581. They might feel

  582. sold off into slavery,

  583. but God doesn't have

  584. any debts

  585. that He has to pay.

  586. So He says to them,

  587. where is the

  588. supposed certificate

  589. of divorce

  590. that I gave you?

  591. Who are the supposed

  592. creditors

  593. that I had to sell you to?

  594. There are none.

  595. So why are they there?

  596. Let's pick up.

  597. Behold,

  598. for your iniquities

  599. you were sold,

  600. and for your transgressions

  601. your mother was sent away.

  602. Why,

  603. when I came,

  604. was there no man?

  605. Why,

  606. when I called,

  607. was there no one to answer?

  608. You see,

  609. the exile wasn't

  610. because of some lack

  611. in God,

  612. a lack of God's power

  613. or a lack of God's

  614. covenant marital faithfulness

  615. to His people,

  616. or even a lack of God

  617. pursuing them,

  618. coming to them,

  619. calling to them.

  620. The exiled people

  621. were there

  622. because of their unfaithfulness,

  623. because when God called,

  624. no one answered.

  625. So God sees their sin,

  626. and He sees ours.

  627. But is that the end?

  628. The passage continues.

  629. God says,

  630. Is my hand shortened

  631. that it cannot redeem?

  632. Or have I no power

  633. to deliver?

  634. Behold,

  635. by my rebuke,

  636. I dry up the sea.

  637. I make the rivers

  638. a desert.

  639. The fish stink

  640. for lack of water

  641. and die of thirst.

  642. I clothe the heavens

  643. with blackness

  644. and make sackcloth

  645. their covering.

  646. God says,

  647. Don't think for an instant

  648. that I can't rescue you.

  649. The imagery here

  650. in these verses

  651. is from the Exodus.

  652. God drying up the sea,

  653. turning the daylight black

  654. to save His people

  655. in power.

  656. But the power of God,

  657. the power of God,

  658. isn't the ultimate expression

  659. of God's redeeming love.

  660. The Almighty God

  661. sees your sin, yes,

  662. and what does He do?

  663. Well, at this point

  664. in the text,

  665. on to the stage

  666. after God has just declared

  667. His boundless power,

  668. on to the stage

  669. steps the servant.

  670. In verse 4,

  671. the third of Isaiah's

  672. servant songs begins.

  673. The first of these texts,

  674. these songs,

  675. as they're sometimes called,

  676. the first of these servant songs

  677. was back in chapter 42,

  678. verses 1 through 9,

  679. where the servant was seen

  680. bringing justice,

  681. that is bringing rightness

  682. and wholeness,

  683. bringing justice

  684. to the nations.

  685. And then the second servant song

  686. was in chapter 49,

  687. verses 1 through 13,

  688. that we looked at last week,

  689. where the servant is seen

  690. bringing salvation,

  691. not just to Israel,

  692. but to the ends of the earth.

  693. And now the servant steps

  694. back into view here

  695. in chapter 50, verse 4.

  696. Just when God has exposed

  697. our sin,

  698. just when God has exposed

  699. our unwillingness

  700. to listen when He calls,

  701. just when God has exposed

  702. our unwillingness

  703. to respond and turn

  704. when He comes,

  705. just when our sin is open

  706. and exposed,

  707. God says,

  708. I'm mighty to redeem,

  709. and redeem you I will.

  710. And how will I do it?

  711. Through my servant,

  712. the servant who will listen

  713. and who will obey

  714. and who will suffer

  715. and who will be vindicated

  716. for your redemption.

  717. Let's read verses 4 through 9.

  718. The servant comes onto the stage

  719. and now speaks and says,

  720. The Lord God has given me

  721. the tongue of those

  722. who are taught

  723. that I may know

  724. how to sustain with a word

  725. him who is weary.

  726. Morning by morning,

  727. He awakens.

  728. He awakens my ear

  729. to hear

  730. as those who are taught.

  731. The Lord God has opened my ear

  732. and I was not rebellious.

  733. I turned not backward.

  734. I gave my back

  735. to those who strike

  736. and my cheeks

  737. to those who pull out

  738. the beard.

  739. I hid not my face

  740. from disgrace

  741. and spitting.

  742. But the Lord God helps me.

  743. Therefore,

  744. I have not been disgraced.

  745. Therefore,

  746. I have set my face

  747. like flint

  748. and I know

  749. that I shall not

  750. be put to shame.

  751. He who vindicates me

  752. is near.

  753. Who will contend with me?

  754. Let us stand up together.

  755. Who is my adversary?

  756. Let him come near to me.

  757. Behold,

  758. the Lord God helps me.

  759. Who will declare me guilty?

  760. Behold,

  761. all of them will wear out

  762. like a garment.

  763. The moth will eat them up.

  764. Now,

  765. this third passage

  766. about the servant

  767. portrays him

  768. in verses 4 through 5.

  769. Did you catch that?

  770. As perfectly innocent.

  771. He hears God's word

  772. and he obeys.

  773. But nevertheless,

  774. in verses 6 and 7,

  775. he's willing to be struck

  776. as a result of that obedience.

  777. To take the disgrace

  778. and shame for Israel.

  779. But he's able to take on

  780. this substitutionary role

  781. with God's help.

  782. In verses 8 through 9,

  783. his vindication

  784. comes from above

  785. and any accusers

  786. who might try

  787. to condemn him

  788. or declare him guilty,

  789. their case will be devoured

  790. like a cloth

  791. by the moths,

  792. full of holes

  793. with no substance at all.

  794. Now,

  795. what does this mean for us?

  796. Well,

  797. first,

  798. is it not clear

  799. that this servant song

  800. is speaking about

  801. the work of Christ

  802. who gave his back

  803. to those who strike,

  804. his cheek

  805. to those who pull out

  806. the beard,

  807. who didn't hide his face

  808. from disgrace and spitting?

  809. And Christ did this

  810. for you

  811. and for me.

  812. So how should we respond

  813. when our sins

  814. testify against us?

  815. When we're tempted

  816. to doubt God's love

  817. in light of our many

  818. transgressions,

  819. our only comfort

  820. comes in such moments

  821. from looking

  822. to the suffering servant.

  823. He was innocent

  824. yet stricken

  825. on our behalf

  826. so that we might be free

  827. from condemnation.

  828. That's why Paul can say,

  829. who will bring any charge

  830. against God's elect?

  831. It's God who justifies.

  832. Who is to condemn?

  833. Jesus Christ

  834. is the one who died.

  835. More than that,

  836. who was raised,

  837. who is at the right hand

  838. of God,

  839. who is interceding for us.

  840. You see, friends,

  841. God won't forget

  842. your losses

  843. and he won't forget

  844. your enemies,

  845. but he will

  846. forget your sins.

  847. What matchless grace!

  848. Because of the servant's

  849. suffering obedience

  850. in our place,

  851. God can forget

  852. our sins

  853. without forgetting us.

  854. Do you doubt

  855. God's love, friends?

  856. Are you feeling

  857. forgotten?

  858. Look to the cross.

  859. Do you see

  860. what God was willing

  861. to give up for you?

  862. Do you see

  863. how God was willing

  864. to have his hands

  865. pierced for you?

  866. I've engraved you

  867. on the palms

  868. of my hands,

  869. Isaiah 49, 16 says.

  870. And of course,

  871. for hundreds of years

  872. before Christ,

  873. every reader of the Bible

  874. thought that was

  875. just a metaphor.

  876. But when the risen Jesus

  877. comes to his frightened

  878. and despairing disciples

  879. and says,

  880. look,

  881. do you see the scars?

  882. I've literally

  883. engraved you

  884. on the palms

  885. of my hands.

  886. For eternity,

  887. the Lord Jesus

  888. will bear

  889. the marks

  890. of his love

  891. for you.

  892. Forgotten?

  893. Ever.

  894. You are loved

  895. forever

  896. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  897. Christ.

  898. And so,

  899. how will we respond

  900. this morning?

  901. Well,

  902. our passage ends

  903. by saying

  904. there's only two ways

  905. to respond

  906. to this great display

  907. of God's love.

  908. We can trust

  909. in the name

  910. of the Lord

  911. or we can try

  912. to build

  913. our own fires

  914. and light

  915. our own paths.

  916. Look with me

  917. at verses 10 and 11.

  918. Who among you

  919. fears the Lord

  920. and obeys

  921. the voice

  922. of his servant?

  923. Let him

  924. who walks

  925. in darkness

  926. and has no light

  927. trust in the name

  928. of the Lord

  929. and rely

  930. on his God.

  931. But behold,

  932. all you

  933. who kindle

  934. a fire,

  935. who equip

  936. yourselves

  937. with burning

  938. torches,

  939. walk by the light

  940. of your fire

  941. and by the torches

  942. that you have

  943. kindled.

  944. This you have

  945. from my hand.

  946. You shall lie

  947. down in torment.

  948. You see,

  949. if we harden

  950. our hearts

  951. to God's love,

  952. if we try

  953. to walk

  954. by the light

  955. of our own fire

  956. or by some other torch

  957. that we've kindled,

  958. the end won't be joy

  959. but torment.

  960. No other love

  961. can rescue us

  962. from sin.

  963. No other love

  964. can rescue us

  965. from shame

  966. and guilt.

  967. No matter how brightly

  968. we try to stoke

  969. some other fire,

  970. it will never be able

  971. to light our darkness.

  972. But God's love can.

  973. The love of Christ

  974. certainly can.

  975. His love

  976. that will never

  977. forget you.

  978. His love

  979. that will never

  980. forsake you.

  981. The Father's love

  982. that was willing

  983. to send His Son

  984. to suffer

  985. and rise again

  986. for you.

  987. This is a love

  988. that will light up

  989. your life.

  990. This is a love

  991. that's worth living for.

  992. This is the love

  993. that will restore us

  994. and fight for us

  995. and redeem us.

  996. Let's pray together.

  997. Father, we open up

  998. our hands

  999. before You

  1000. this morning

  1001. and we open up

  1002. our hearts to You

  1003. and we pray

1004. that by Your Holy Spirit

  1005. You would give us

  1006. eyes to see

  1007. the depth

  1008. of Your compassion

  1009. and love

  1010. and faithfulness

  1011. to us,

  1012. Your people.

  1013. Lord, I pray

  1014. especially for those

  1015. who are downcast

  1016. and burdened

  1017. and despairing.

  1018. Would Your comfort

  1019. draw near to them?

  1020. Help them, God,

1021. to look up to Christ

  1022. and see the love

1023. that can light their path

1024. and grant them the faith

  1025. to trust in You.

  1026. We pray this

1027. in the name of Jesus.

  1028. Amen.

  1029. Friends, let's stand

  1030. and let's sing together.
