  1. Well, good morning, church. It's good to be with you all this morning.

  2. Would you turn with me to Isaiah chapter 55? That's page 576 in the Pew Bible.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  3. Today we come to the end of this great middle section of the book of Isaiah,

  4. and it ends with an invitation. So let me read this for us. Isaiah chapter 55.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  5. Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come buy and eat.

  6. Come buy wine and milk without money and without price.

  7. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

  8. Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

  9. Lord, incline your ear and come to me, hear that your soul may live.

  10. And I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.

  11. Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.

  12. Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you.

  13. Because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.

  14. Seek the Lord while he may be found. Call upon him while he is near.

  15. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts.

  16. Let him return to the Lord that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

  17. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

  18. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

  19. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there but water the earth,

  20. making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

  21. so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth.

  22. It shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,

  23. and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

  24. For you shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace.

  25. The mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing,

  26. and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

  27. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress, instead of the briar shall come up the myrtle,

  28. and it shall make a name for the Lord, an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

  29. Let's pray together.

  30. Father, we ask that as we come now to your word, having heard it in our ears,

  31. we pray that by your spirit you would move in our hearts, and in our lives,

  32. and in our words, and in our actions, to do the very work that you have set out to do,

  33. to create a people for yourself, to bring you much praise.

  34. So God, be with us in this moment.

  35. Help us to receive what your spirit is saying to us.

  36. For Jesus' sake.

  37. Amen.

  38. Amen.

  39. Well, maybe you've had the experience of going to your mailbox,

  40. and finding in the midst of all the junk mail, and the coupons, and whatever,

  41. one envelope that catches your attention.

  42. It's kind of thicker than all the rest of them.

  43. The envelope seems to be made of like really nice paper,

  44. and the address is handwritten, and you open it up,

  45. and it's an invitation.

  46. Something wonderful has happened or is about to happen,

  47. and this invitation says, we want you to come.

  48. Come celebrate.

  49. Come feast with us.

  50. Maybe it's a graduation, or a birthday, or a wedding.

  51. Whatever it is, something wonderful has happened,

  52. a big life-changing event, and we want you to come and join in.

  53. You know, if you step back,

  54. that's really the message of the whole Bible.

  55. Something has happened.

  56. Something wonderful, something life-changing.

  57. God, through His Son, has done something in history

  58. that has changed history and can change your life, too, forever.

  59. And now you and I are invited to come.

  60. And Isaiah 55 is just that.

  61. It's the invitation of the gospel, the good news.

  62. Since chapter 40, Isaiah has been laying before us

  63. and unraveling and unfolding all that God was going to do

  64. to redeem His people, to liberate them from exile,

  65. to bring them home.

  66. And all of this came to its climax, you remember, in Isaiah 53,

  67. with the suffering servant who would atone for His people's sins

  68. once and for all.

  69. And now, with all of that prepared,

  70. with all of that completed,

  71. the invitation goes forth.

  72. You see, Christianity isn't like the junk mail

  73. that you and I get.

  74. You know, you pull out the flyer and it's like,

  75. oh, look, I could save 20% the next time I go to Target.

  76. Isn't that kind of nice?

  77. Well, I don't really need anything at Target,

  78. so, meh, and we just chuck it, right?

  79. Now, maybe you're thinking, 20% at Target?

  80. Why are you throwing that coupon away?

  81. That's a pretty good coupon.

  82. You've got to put that thing on the fridge.

  83. Save it for next time.

  84. But here's the point.

  85. Christianity is not a nice little offer

  86. that might make our nice little lives a little bit nicer.

  87. Christianity is a summons.

  88. It's an invitation to which you and I must respond.

  89. And if you have not explicitly and consciously responded

  90. to that invitation, then you're not a Christian.

  91. But what we're invited to,

  92. what this God calls us to is so great

  93. that we can't just pass it by like a piece of junk mail.

  94. We have to consider.

  95. We have to respond.

  96. So, let's look at this invitation together, then.

  97. First, in verses 1 through 5 of our chapter,

  98. God calls you and I to come.

  99. In the first five verses, we hear the invitation.

  100. But notice that this isn't a summons

  101. to a court hearing that God is making.

  102. It's not calling us to jury duty, you know,

  103. or any kind of invitation like that.

  104. It's a summons to a feast.

  105. Are you thirsty?

  106. Isaiah says.

  107. Come and drink.

  108. Are you hungry?

  109. Come and dine.

  110. And it's not the cheap stuff that's being laid out.

  111. It's wine.

  112. It's milk.

  113. It's rich food that brings deep delight.

  114. But there's also something curious about this invitation, isn't there?

  115. We're called to come and buy this wine and milk

  116. without money and without price.

  117. It is something that must be purchased.

  118. It must be bought.

  119. But the price won't be paid by us.

  120. It'll be paid by another.

  121. This is an essential part, you know,

  122. the nature of the gospel invitation.

  123. It comes free to us, but it's costly to another.

  124. We come and buy this wine and milk without money and without price.

  125. And then Isaiah asks us this question.

  126. You know, think of all that you're spending yourself on.

  127. Does it really satisfy?

  128. As you spend your money, as you spend your labor,

  129. as you spend your life on earthly pursuits apart from God,

  130. yes, maybe they're good and they're proper place,

  131. but is that bread really feeding your soul?

  132. Is that water really quenching your thirst?

  133. Jesus, in the midst of his wilderness temptation, said,

  134. man cannot live on bread alone, quoting the book of Deuteronomy.

  135. The human heart was made for more.

  136. We were made for God.

  137. And the great tragedy of human existence

  138. is that we would spend our lives on something that does not satisfy

  139. rather than come and get the wine and milk

  140. that God offers us free of charge,

  141. without money and without price,

  142. because it's been purchased by him in our place, by his son.

  143. Of course, this sort of invitation is humbling, isn't it?

  144. To admit that everything our labors can afford

  145. is nothing but bread that can't satisfy.

  146. That's kind of humbling.

  147. To admit that the only way to get the wine and the milk,

  148. the real things our hearts long for,

  149. is to accept it as a gift from God

  150. that we cannot earn and cannot buy.

  151. You know, maybe that's the hardest part,

  152. to admit that we need someone else to pay our way.

  153. But while the gospel invitation may humble us,

  154. it doesn't humiliate us.

  155. Because what God offers us in verses 3 through 5

  156. is the very opposite of humiliation.

  157. What is this feast that God is inviting us to?

  158. What is it?

  159. Well, in verses 3 through 5,

  160. we see that it's the ancient promise of glory.

  161. This invitation is to glory.

  162. Listen again to verses 3 through 5.

  163. Here it is.

  164. Here it is.

  165. Glorified you.

  166. Now, in our ears,

  167. these verses may sound a bit confusing, right?

  168. But to an ancient Israelite,

  169. what was being laid out here in these verses

  170. was what it was all about.

  171. You see,

  172. if you go all the way back to the beginning

  173. of the biblical story,

  174. when Adam fell in the garden,

  175. all creation went down into the curse with him.

  176. And that kingdom that God had established in creation

  177. with Adam at the head

  178. seemed in the moment of the fall to be lost.

  179. Now, instead of life and flourishing,

  180. all was sin and judgment and death.

  181. But God in that moment made a promise.

  182. He made a binding promise.

  183. He made a covenant.

  184. And this promise began in the garden

  185. and was carried on through Noah and Moses.

  186. And eventually,

  187. God reiterated this promise to David.

  188. And he reiterated it in a fresh way.

  189. God promised that God's kingdom

  190. would be established forever

  191. through David and David's line.

  192. That there would be a king from David's line

  193. who would sit on the throne forever,

  194. a new Adam.

  195. And that king would establish God's kingdom

  196. and he would restore God's people

  197. and he would even heal creation.

  198. But it wouldn't just stop with the people of Israel.

  199. Like a river kind of overflowing its banks

  200. when the rains come,

  201. this promise,

  202. this covenant of an everlasting kingdom

  203. would overflow out to all the nations of the earth.

  204. And they too would come

  205. and they would enter the covenant people.

  206. They would come into the kingdom

  207. and at last,

  208. they would know God.

  209. In other words,

  210. God promised his people

  211. that he would glorify them.

  212. that they would be restored back

  213. to what he had created them to be.

  214. That he would raise them up from the ashes

  215. out of death and shame.

  216. That he would restore their fortunes,

  217. renew their joy,

  218. and make them that light to the nations.

  219. And we know from the perspective

  220. of the New Testament

  221. that this covenant with David was fulfilled

  222. when at last the eternal king

  223. did come from David's line.

  224. The Lord Jesus,

  225. who in his resurrection

  226. now lives forever,

  227. never to see decay.

  228. That's what our first reading

  229. in our service was all about.

  230. It was the apostle saying,

  231. that king you've been waiting for,

  232. the one who is going to reign forever,

  233. he's here.

  234. The Lord Jesus,

  235. how do you know?

  236. Because he's been raised

  237. and he's never going to die.

  238. So you see,

  239. responding to the invitation of God's gospel,

  240. you know,

  241. it's not like taking up some new hobby

  242. that might provide a few hours

  243. of interesting distraction.

  244. You know,

  245. I've got an Xbox for Saturday

  246. and I've got a church for Sunday

  247. and then I've got to grind through

  248. five weeks

  249. until I can get back to my Xbox

  250. and then back to church.

  251. That's not what the invitation is.

  252. Ultimately,

  253. God's inviting you

  254. to be restored

  255. to the ancient glory

  256. that he intended humanity

  257. to have all along in creation.

  258. To be participants of his kingdom.

  259. To be the image bearers

  260. we were meant to be.

  261. To be a human person

  262. fully alive.

  263. That's what verse three means.

  264. Incline your ear

  265. and come to me here

  266. that your soul may live.

  267. You know,

  268. in the Old Testament,

  269. you know,

  270. your soul isn't just sort of like

  271. the immaterial part of you.

  272. It's the true you.

  273. Your very self,

  274. your very being.

  275. The invitation of the gospel

  276. God summons to come

  277. is the summons to enter his kingdom

  278. under the lordship of King Jesus

  279. and no life

  280. and no glory.

  281. But what exactly does it look like

  282. to respond to this invitation?

  283. How do we do it?

  284. Well,

  285. in verses one through five

  286. as we just saw,

  287. God calls you and I to come.

  288. But in verses six and seven,

  289. God shows us how to come.

  290. If verses one through five

  291. are the invitation to come,

  292. then verses six and seven

  293. are the explanation

  294. of how to come.

  295. So let me read

  296. verses six and seven again.

  297. Seek the Lord

  298. while he may be found.

  299. Call upon him

  300. while he is near.

  301. Let the wicked

  302. forsake his way

  303. and the unrighteous man

  304. his thoughts.

  305. Let him return to the Lord

  306. that he may have compassion on him

  307. and to our God

  308. for he will abundantly pardon.

  309. Now notice the two sides

  310. of responding

  311. to God's invitation.

  312. On the one side,

  313. we're told to seek the Lord,

  314. to call upon him.

  315. And this action of turning to God,

  316. seeking him,

  317. calling upon him,

  318. placing our trust in him,

  319. coming under his lordship,

  320. this is what the Bible calls faith.

  321. But there's another side here.

  322. There's not just turning to God,

  323. but there's also turning away

  324. from our old life.

  325. Verse seven says,

  326. let the wicked forsake his way

  327. and the unrighteous man

  328. his thoughts.

  329. This is what the Bible

  330. often calls repentance,

  331. turning away from

  332. our old life without God

  333. and admitting that our path

  334. apart from God

  335. leads to dissolution

  336. and foolishness

  337. and destruction.

  338. Repentance is turning away

  339. from that path,

  340. leaving that path,

  341. to place our whole life

  342. in God's hands.

  343. So here's the beauty

  344. of the invitation

  345. of the gospel.

  346. We come to the Lord

  347. as we are,

  348. but not to stay

  349. as we are.

  350. The Lord accepts

  351. everyone who comes to him,

  352. but coming to him

  353. entails leaving our old life

  354. behind for a new one.

  355. And if we do that,

  356. if we turn

  357. and seek the Lord,

  358. what do we find?

  359. If we forsake our old ways

  360. and call upon the Lord Jesus,

  361. how will God respond?

  362. Does he kind of put us

  363. on a probationary period

  364. to see if it might work out,

  365. you know?

  366. Is it like you're a new hire,

  367. you know,

  368. given 30 days

  369. to see if you're a good fit

  370. with the corporation?

  371. Does he put you

  372. in the middle of tryouts

  373. to see if you're spiritually

  374. fit enough

  375. to make the team?

  376. Is that how God's invitation works?

  377. No.

  378. For every sinner

  379. who repents

  380. and calls upon the Lord,

  381. who receives

  382. this invitation of life,

  383. there's no probationary period.

  384. There's no trial run.

  385. There's no tryouts.

  386. Everyone who returns

  387. to the Lord

  388. receives what?

  389. Abundant pardon,

  390. verse 7 says.

  391. He will abundantly pardon.

  392. Pardon.

  393. Not begrudgingly pardon.

  394. Not basically pardon.

  395. Not probably pardon.

  396. But abundantly pardon.

  397. Pardon upon pardon.

  398. Do you hear those words,

  399. Christian?

  400. Brothers, sisters?

  401. Perhaps this week

  402. you've fallen short.

  403. Perhaps this week

  404. you've seen that there's still

  405. much remaining sin

  406. in your life.

  407. If that's you,

  408. then treasure this word

  409. abundantly.

  410. You know,

  411. this is the natural progression

  412. of the Christian life.

  413. The deeper we grow in Christ,

  414. the more we begin to see

  415. of God's holiness.

  416. How beautiful,

  417. how awesome,

  418. how good

  419. and great God is.

  420. How loving

  421. and wonderful God is.

  422. And the more we also see

  423. of our own sinfulness.

  424. How deep the idols

  425. of our heart are lodged.

  426. How besetting

  427. our habitual sins really are.

  428. But for the Christian,

  429. this doesn't lead to despair

  430. seeing these two things

  431. in increasing measure.

  432. Because as our understanding

  433. of God's holiness

  434. gets bigger and bigger,

  435. and as our understanding

  436. of our own sin

  437. gets deeper and deeper,

  438. you see,

  439. our knowledge of the cross

  440. gets greater and greater.

  441. for this is a God

  442. who abundantly pardons.

  443. And as the wonder

  444. of the cross grows,

  445. as the wonder

  446. of His abundant pardon

  447. captures our hearts,

  448. that's the engine

  449. for real change

  450. in our lives.

  451. The love of God

  452. forgiving all my sins,

  453. restoring me to glory,

  454. giving me a place

  455. in His eternal kingdom,

  456. inviting me,

  457. a sinner,

  458. to join His mission

  459. in the world,

  460. to proclaim the gospel

  461. of peace

  462. to the whole creation,

  463. and to do the good works

  464. He prepared in advance

  465. for me to do.

  466. To let a life

  467. of mercy and justice

  468. be like a mustard seed,

  469. seemingly small,

  470. seemingly insignificant,

  471. but with that,

  472. to grow into a tree

  473. with the birds of the air

  474. resting in its branches.

  475. all of this,

  476. fueled by the wonder

  477. of the cross,

  478. and God's abundant pardon

  479. to sinners,

  480. to you and me.

  481. But can we be sure about it?

  482. Will God really pardon?

  483. Will God really give us

  484. a place in His ancient

  485. promise of glory?

  486. Will God really make good

  487. on His invitation?

  488. Well, if in verses 1-5

  489. God calls us to come,

  490. and in verses 6-7

  491. God shows us how to come,

  492. in verses 8-13

  493. and the rest of our passage,

  494. God gives us assurance

  495. to come.

  496. Isaiah 55 moves

  497. from invitation

  498. to explanation,

  499. finally to assurance.

  500. And there are actually

  501. three assurances here,

  502. three pairs of verses,

  503. each starting with the word

  504. for.

  505. How do we know

  506. God will abundantly pardon

  507. and make good

  508. on His invitation?

  509. Well, first,

  510. because God's ways

  511. are not your ways.

  512. Look again at verses 8-9.

  513. For my thoughts

  514. are not your thoughts,

  515. neither are your ways

  516. my ways,

  517. declares the Lord.

  518. For as the heavens

  519. are higher than the earth,

  520. so are my ways

  521. higher than your ways,

  522. and my thoughts

  523. than your thoughts.

  524. Here's the good news, friend.

  525. God

  526. isn't

  527. like us.

  528. We humans

  529. rarely pardon,

  530. let alone

  531. abundantly pardon.

  532. But God

  533. isn't like us.

  534. Do you remember

  535. what the Apostle Paul

  536. wrote in Romans 5?

  537. He says,

  538. scarcely

  539. will someone die

  540. for a righteous person.

  541. Maybe for a good person

  542. someone would dare

  543. to die.

  544. But God

  545. shows His love

  546. for us

  547. in that while

  548. we were still sinners,

  549. Christ died for us.

  550. God's thoughts

  551. are not our thoughts

  552. and God's ways

  553. are not our ways.

  554. We want to turn away

  555. when others wrong us,

  556. but God turns towards us.

  557. We want other people

  558. to pay when they offend us,

  559. but God pays

  560. what we owe

  561. when we've offended Him.

  562. And God isn't just

  563. a little different

  564. or slightly different.

  565. God is massively,

  566. majestically different.

  567. Like the sky

  568. and clouds

  569. and stars

  570. are higher than the earth,

  571. billions of miles away,

  572. that's how much higher

  573. God's ways are

  574. than our ways.

  575. And that means

  576. God will abundantly pardon

  577. all who come

  578. trusting in His Son.

  579. But it's not just

  580. that God's ways

  581. are higher than ours.

  582. In verses 10-11

  583. we see that God's word

  584. is more productive

  585. and more effective

  586. than ours.

  587. Look again

  588. at verse 10-11.

  589. For as the rain

  590. and the snow

  591. come down from heaven

  592. and do not return there

  593. but water the earth,

  594. making it bring forth

  595. and sprout,

  596. giving seed to the sower

  597. and bread to the eater,

  598. so shall my word be

  599. that goes out

  600. from my mouth.

  601. It shall not return

  602. to me empty,

  603. but it shall accomplish

  604. that which I purpose

  605. and shall succeed

  606. in the thing

  607. for which I sent it.

  608. God's word

  609. always accomplishes

  610. what God desires.

  611. It never comes back empty.

  612. Like rain that comes down

  613. and produces grain

  614. and grain that becomes bread

  615. and bread that feeds

  616. the hungry.

  617. God's word is productive

  618. and effective

  619. always without fail.

  620. If God says it,

  621. He'll do it.

  622. In Genesis 1,

  623. God's word brought forth

  624. the heavens and the earth

  625. in creation.

  626. And Hebrews 1 says

  627. that God's word

  628. upholds the universe

  629. and keeps it in existence.

  630. And that powerful,

  631. effective word

  632. in creation

  633. and preservation

  634. is the same

  635. powerful,

  636. effective word

  637. that God speaks

  638. in redemption.

  639. How do you know

  640. God will do what He says?

  641. Because this very word

  642. became flesh for us

  643. and for our salvation.

  644. God spoke

  645. and things came into being.

  646. And when God spoke

  647. a word of redemption,

  648. what did He do?

  649. He became flesh for us.

  650. The Son,

  651. the word of God

  652. became incarnate

  653. in the person of Jesus

  654. and we beheld His glory.

  655. And on the cross,

  656. the incarnate crucified word

  657. cried out,

  658. it's finished.

  659. Sins are paid.

  660. Death has died.

  661. The enemy's been defeated.

  662. And that same word

  663. is now heralded

  664. in the preaching

  665. of the gospel.

  666. The invitation goes forth

  667. from the empty tomb

  668. of the risen Lord

  669. down through the preaching

  670. of the apostles

  671. and now being proclaimed

  672. by the church

  673. in every age,

  674. the invitation goes forth.

  675. And this word,

  676. because it's God's word,

  677. God's gospel,

  678. it cannot fail.

  679. If God says He will pardon,

  680. then surely He will

  681. abundantly pardon.

  682. But it's not just God's ways

  683. or God's word

  684. that assures us

  685. that God will make good

  686. on His invitation.

  687. There's also God's name.

  688. Look again at verses 12-13.

  689. For you shall go out in joy

  690. and be led forth in peace.

  691. The mountains and the hills

  692. before you shall break forth

  693. into singing

  694. and all the trees of the field

  695. shall clap their hands.

  696. Instead of the thorn

  697. shall come up the cypress.

  698. Instead of the briar

  699. shall come up the myrtle

  700. and it shall make a name

  701. for the Lord.

  702. An everlasting sign

  703. that shall not be cut off.

  704. These verses show us

  705. the kind of radical transformation

  706. that God's word brings.

  707. This invitation of abundant pardon,

  708. of God's glory and kingdom

  709. through the crucified

  710. and risen Jesus,

  711. it brings about what?

  712. It brings about a new creation.

  713. Once there were tangled thorns

  714. and briars,

  715. now there's a forest

  716. of cypress trees

  717. and myrtle trees.

  718. This beautiful forest

  719. where once there were

  720. thorns and briars.

  721. And is this not a picture

  722. of the redeemed people of God

  723. brought from death to life

  724. through the glorious gospel

  725. of God's Son?

  726. But the assurance

  727. that God will do it

  728. is found at the very end.

  729. How do we know

  730. God will make good

  731. on His invitation?

  732. How do we know

  733. that God will abundantly pardon

  734. and transform us like this?

  735. Because this is going

  736. to be the sign.

  737. The transformation

  738. of the effective word

  739. is going to be the sign,

  740. the everlasting sign

  741. of God's great name.

  742. When the new creation erupts,

  743. when God's people

  744. are forgiven and transformed,

  745. and ultimately,

  746. in the new heavens

  747. and new earth,

  748. when all of creation

  749. is released from its bondage

  750. to decay,

  751. and the mountains

  752. and the hills

  753. break forth into singing,

  754. and the trees of the field

  755. clap their hands,

  756. all of that is going

  757. to be a testimony

  758. proclaiming the greatness

  759. of God.

  760. It shall make a name

  761. for the Lord.

  762. You see, friends,

  763. this is how God

  764. has chosen and ordained

  765. to display His glory,

  766. to display His name,

  767. His nature,

  768. who He is.

  769. This is how God

  770. has chosen to display

  771. that for all eternity

  772. through the redemption

  773. of His people,

  774. redeeming them

  775. from sorrow

  776. and the enmity of sin

  777. into joy

  778. and peace

  779. of abundant pardon.

  780. And through their redemption,

  781. God will sweep up creation

  782. in freedom

  783. from sin's decay.

  784. You see,

  785. God didn't just want

  786. to reveal His glory

  787. as a God who creates.

  788. God chose to reveal

  789. His glory also

  790. as a God who redeems.

  791. And if this is how

  792. God has chosen

  793. to reveal His great name

  794. for all eternity,

  795. then surely it must be so.

  796. If God is choosing

  797. to raise us to new life

  798. so that in the coming ages

  799. He might show

  800. the immeasurable riches

  801. of His grace,

  802. as Paul says in Ephesians 2,

  803. then we can have

  804. all the assurance

  805. in the world

  806. that He will do so.

  807. Why?

  808. Because God has staked

  809. His own name

  810. and His own reputation

  811. on it.

  812. The masterpiece

  813. that God will hold up

  814. showing how awesome

  815. and how much

  816. of a God He is

  817. so that His glory

  818. and wisdom

  819. and beauty

  820. might shine forth

  821. for all eternity

  822. are His redeemed people

  823. united to the Redeemer,

  824. our Lord Jesus.

  825. He signed His name

  826. on the canvas

  827. and He will surely

  828. complete every stroke

  829. of that masterpiece

  830. to perfection.

  831. And that means

  832. everyone who responds

  833. to this invitation,

  834. everyone who comes,

  835. leaving their old life,

  836. calling upon the Lord Jesus,

  837. will be saved.

  838. So you've gone

  839. through your mail.

  840. You've opened

  841. the invitation.

  842. Here it is.

  843. While there's still time,

  844. God says through Isaiah,

  845. respond.

  846. Come.

  847. Come to the waters.

  848. Come buy and eat

  849. without money

  850. and without price.

  851. Don't wait.

  852. Come.

  853. Call upon the Lord Jesus

  854. and you will be saved.

  855. And brothers and sisters,

  856. those who have already

  857. called upon the name

  858. of the Lord,

  859. remember what we've been

  860. invited into,

  861. a feast,

  862. a joy.

  863. So celebrate today.

  864. Rejoice and be glad.

  865. Yours is a glory

  866. that will not fail.

  867. Let your neighbors

  868. and your coworkers

  869. and your family

  870. see your joy.

  871. You've been invited

  872. to the feast.

  873. The new creation's begun.

  874. Let them see your joy

  875. and let them know

  876. that they're invited too.

  877. Let's pray together.

  878. Father in heaven,

  879. we pray that as we've

  880. heard and considered

  881. this invitation this morning,

  882. that your spirit

  883. would work in our hearts

  884. to bring them

  885. from death to life

  886. to respond to this call

  887. to turn and trust in you.

  888. God, for those who are

  889. wrestling with this call,

  890. I pray

  891. that you would come to them,

  892. liberate them

  893. from their fears

  894. and their doubts,

  895. and grant them the faith

  896. to trust in you.

  897. And God, for those who

  898. by your mercy

  899. have responded

  900. to this invitation,

  901. for those whom you've

  902. brought into your church

  903. through this wonderful

  904. invitation to come,

  905. I pray, Lord,

  906. that we would have

  907. the joy

  908. that is spoken of here.

  909. and the peace

  910. and the glory.

  911. God, we know

  912. it's imperfect now,

  913. but we see it.

  914. We see the signs

  915. of your kingdom

  916. breaking out in our midst.

  917. We see thorns

  918. that have been turned

  919. into beautiful trees,

  920. so we pray for more of it, God,

  921. and we pray

  922. for a great confidence

  923. in you

  924. and a joy in you

  925. that is befitting

  926. of our Lord Jesus,

  927. the great King of joy

  928. who has purchased for us

  929. such a great

  930. and unshakable salvation.

  931. In his name we pray.

  932. Amen.
