  1. Well, good morning again, church.

  2. Would you turn with me to Mark chapter 1, verses 1, verses 14 through 20.

    Mark 1:1

  3. Mark chapter 1, verses 14 through 20.

    Mark 1:14–20

  4. That's page 785 in the Pew Bible.

  5. It'll be on the screens as I read it in just a second.

  6. But let me encourage you to actually have it open throughout our time of considering

  7. this passage together.

  8. Let me read, and then I'll pray for us.

  9. Mark 1, 14 through 20.

  10. Now, after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God

  11. and saying, the time is fulfilled.

  12. The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  13. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  14. Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon,

  15. casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

  16. And Jesus said to them, follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.

  17. And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

  18. And going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother,

  19. who were in their boat mending their nets.

  20. And immediately he called them.

  21. And they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

  22. All right, let's pray together.

  23. Father in heaven, help us now as we come to this word to do what we just sung,

  24. to turn our eyes upon Jesus and to see in him our Savior ever true, our good and rightful king.

  25. We ask all this in his name and by the power of your Holy Spirit, Father.

  26. Amen.

  27. Well, perhaps you can think of a time when you were waiting for something big to come.

  28. I have to confess, every time I place an Amazon order, truthfully, whether it's small or big,

  29. I get a little excited waiting for that package to show up on my door, right?

  30. But that's nothing compared to waiting for, say, something bigger like your birthday to come,

  31. or if you're expecting, you're waiting for the day when your child will come,

  32. or perhaps you're waiting for a loved one to come home from a long trip,

  33. or perhaps waiting for news about some big event, waiting for something big to come.

  34. Maybe in your life right now you're kind of waiting for something big,

  35. something bigger than an Amazon package anyway.

  36. I think at the deepest level, I think at the deepest level,

  37. we're kind of all waiting for something big, aren't we?

  38. I mean, if we pause and we're just quiet for a moment,

  39. we're waiting for the day when finally, maybe, possibly, hopefully, something will change.

  40. In this broken world, we all catch ourselves sometimes waiting and hoping for something big.

  41. When will the day come?

  42. When will things finally get put right?

  43. Not just the little things, but like the whole thing, right?

  44. When will the world finally get put right?

  45. And I wonder if those little kind of everyday expectations that we have

  46. are like little glimmers or little echoes of that deeper human longing.

  47. You know, at a silly level, I'm waiting for my Amazon package to come

  48. because I'm out of my favorite pens,

  49. and once that package gets here,

  50. finally, my writing needs will be put right at long last.

  51. You're waiting for your promotion at work

  52. because then maybe your financial needs can get put right.

  53. You're waiting for your baby to come

  54. because then maybe your desire for a family, for a home,

  55. for a deep love can get put right.

  56. But maybe, perhaps, something even bigger can come

  57. that will put everything right.

  58. And you know, if you've ever felt that longing,

  59. the good news is you're in good company.

  60. One of the great themes or threads or desires

  61. that kind of drives the whole Bible is exactly that.

  62. It's the hope that the world could be put right again.

  63. If you start reading the Old Testament,

  64. you'll see, well, you'll see that things go wrong pretty quickly.

  65. But then there's a promise.

  66. A promise that one day the wrong will be undone,

  67. everything sad will come untrue,

  68. and at last sickness, sorrow, and death will be no more.

  69. But keep reading the Old Testament,

  70. and you'll see that there's a growing wisdom that develops.

  71. A growing wisdom that the human problem,

  72. the world's problem,

  73. is so intractable and so great and so deep

  74. that humans can't solve it.

  75. As the last chapters of the Old Testament come to a close,

  76. we see that if the world is going to be put right,

  77. then God must be the one to do it.

  78. And as the ages kind of roll on

  79. after the close of the Old Testament,

  80. the Jewish people begin talking about this hope,

  81. this longing in terms of God's kingdom.

  82. That is when God, the Lord,

  83. the world's true king,

  84. comes to reign

  85. and comes to put the world right again.

  86. If you ask many Jews in the first century,

  87. what is it that's going to heal the world?

  88. What's going to take this broken world

  89. full of injustice and wrong and suffering and death,

  90. what's going to heal it once and for all?

  91. The answer would have been

  92. God's kingdom.

  93. Now listen again to verses 14 through 15 of Mark 1.

  94. Now after John was arrested,

  95. Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God

  96. and saying,

  97. the time's fulfilled.

  98. The kingdom of God is at hand.

  99. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  100. Jesus' message was that the reign of God,

  101. the kingdom of God,

  102. the hope of the world,

  103. the healing of the world,

  104. the putting right of all things had arrived.

  105. The time is fulfilled,

  106. the wait is over,

  107. and the healing has begun.

  108. It's at hand.

  109. That is, it's pressing down right now

  110. in this moment.

  111. And Jesus says,

  112. that's good news.

  113. And it's not just the good news,

  114. the gospel of Rome or of Caesar.

  115. It's not the good news of any human empire

  116. or any human endeavor or human striving,

  117. but it's the gospel,

  118. the good news of God.

  119. God's tremendous, history-changing good news.

  120. God's kingdom is at hand.

  121. God's kingdom is at hand.

  122. So this passage from Mark that we just read

  123. helps us to understand then

  124. two very important things,

  125. and we're going to look at them both together.

  126. First, in verses 14 through 15,

  127. Mark helps us to see Jesus' message.

  128. And then in verses 16 through 20,

  129. we see Jesus' call.

  130. That is, how should we respond to that message?

  131. There's a lot of misunderstanding

  132. about both of those things,

  133. but Mark's going to help us to get it right.

  134. What is Jesus' message,

  135. and what is Jesus' call?

  136. How should we respond to that message?

  137. So when we consider first Jesus' message

  138. in verses 14 through 15,

  139. we see that ultimately the message of Jesus

  140. maybe isn't what we expect.

  141. After all, it's common to think of Jesus

  142. as just one of the great religious leaders, right,

  143. who came to start another religious movement.

  144. And what do great religious leaders do?

  145. Well, they come and they give new teaching,

  146. and they give new instructions to follow, right?

  147. The Buddha came and he taught the four truths,

  148. and Muhammad brought the five pillars,

  149. and Jesus, well, well, actually,

  150. Jesus is quite different.

  151. He breaks the mold.

  152. Because his message isn't primarily

  153. a new code of ethics.

  154. Of course, Jesus did teach us how to live.

  155. But the heart of his message,

  156. the real heart of Jesus' message

  157. wasn't something that you and I should be doing,

  158. but something that God was doing.

  159. God's kingdom had arrived.

  160. The time was up.

  161. And that's why Jesus uses the word gospel.

  162. Of course, that's a pretty kind of religious-y

  163. sounding word today, isn't it?

  164. Gospel.

  165. But it wasn't in the first century.

  166. In Jesus' day, the word gospel, or good news,

  167. referred to what messengers proclaimed

  168. when great battles had been won,

  169. or when emperors had been born,

  170. or when kingdoms rose and kingdoms fell.

  171. A gospel in the first century wasn't a religious word.

  172. It was a political word.

  173. It was a social word.

  174. It was a word that you would read

  175. on the front page of the New York Times,

  176. not in your church bulletin.

  177. It was news.

  178. So it's quite significant that Jesus' message

  179. is first and foremost not a dogma or an ethic,

  180. but a gospel,

  181. a message of something that is being done.

  182. Something is happening.

  183. God is doing something.

  184. And God is doing something good.

  185. He's come at last to make things right.

  186. The healing has begun.

  187. But you see, Jesus' message wasn't just

  188. that God's kingdom had arrived,

  189. but that God's kingdom had arrived in him.

  190. Now, we'll take the rest of Mark's gospel

  191. for this reality to unfold,

  192. but we do see it here.

  193. What is it that starts the inbreaking of God's reign?

  194. It's Jesus when he steps forward and says,

  195. the time is fulfilled.

  196. His arrival, his proclamation

  197. is the beginning of God's kingdom.

  198. And so what Mark wants us to see,

  199. even at this earliest point in his gospel,

  200. isn't just that God's kingdom is at hand,

  201. but that God's kingdom is at hand in Jesus.

  202. The healing of the world comes through him.

  203. That is a bit challenging for us today, isn't it?

  204. We can think of all sorts of things we think

  205. that need to happen in order for the world to be healed,

  206. in order for things to be put right.

  207. But if at the center of that,

  208. hope and longing and dream and plan

  209. is not the Lord Jesus,

  210. then we've departed from God's own plan and way

  211. of bringing his kingdom and healing the world.

  212. So, you know, if you would have asked

  213. a typical Jewish person in the first century,

  214. as I said, what's going to heal the world,

  215. they would have said God's kingdom.

  216. But if you would have asked a Christian,

  217. whether Jew or Gentile,

  218. they would have said the same thing with this twist.

  219. God's kingdom, and it's come in Jesus.

  220. God has begun to reclaim his fallen world,

  221. to heal what's broken,

  222. and he's doing it through his eternal son,

  223. the Messiah, the Lord Jesus.

  224. And isn't that good news?

  225. Why?

  226. Well, think with me for a second.

  227. Imagine God,

  228. who he's revealed himself to be,

  229. holy, just, good, sovereign, mighty,

  230. beautiful beyond measure.

  231. Imagine God,

  232. upon whom we all depend for every second,

  233. coming to put things right,

  234. taking all the wrong and injustice and evil

  235. in the world and putting it away once and for all.

  236. That's a wonderful hope, isn't it?

  237. Until you stop to think,

  238. what about my own wrongs and my own injustices?

  239. What about my own heart?

  240. That yes, more often than I care to admit,

  241. is so self-centered and at times even evil.

  242. And then you might start to think,

  243. God's kingdom, yes,

  244. it might be good news for the world,

  245. but is it good news for me,

  246. a sinner?

  247. When God's kingdom comes,

  248. how could there possibly be a place for me?

  249. But consider Jesus.

  250. Jesus arrives in Galilee.

  251. Now, that's a pretty curious place

  252. to begin the kingdom,

  253. to begin the reign of God, Galilee.

  254. After all, think about it.

  255. In the first century,

  256. Rome was the center of the Gentile world

  257. in the first century.

  258. Jerusalem was the center of the Jewish world.

  259. If you were going to start the in-breaking reign of God

  260. and fix things,

  261. you think you would start there, right?

  262. No.

  263. Jesus begins in Galilee.

  264. He begins in the margins.

  265. Galilee is just this ordinary place.

  266. But there,

  267. that's where Jesus begins.

  268. Not among the political elite,

  269. not among the religious or the moral elite,

  270. Galilee.

  271. But Jesus doesn't just begin His ministry on the margins.

  272. He ends it there as well.

  273. Where does the gospel of Mark lead?

  274. Do we see Jesus in a liberating victory march to Rome

  275. to overthrow oppression and injustice?

  276. Do we see a sort of triumphant march to Jerusalem,

  277. toppling all the sort of corrupt religiosity

  278. happening in the capital?

  279. No.

  280. Jesus' ministry comes to its climax

  281. on a hill outside of Jerusalem,

  282. surrounded by criminals,

  283. hung up to die on a Roman cross.

  284. And we ask,

  285. is this how God's kingdom comes?

  286. Through the tragic execution

  287. of a young Jewish man named Jesus?

  288. Is that God's kingdom?

  289. But don't you see?

  290. Jesus wasn't just any young Jewish man.

  291. He was the king of God's kingdom.

  292. And the king knew that if God's kingdom

  293. was going to be good news for you and me,

  294. for sinners,

  295. then he would have to step,

  296. not just into the margins of our ordinary life,

  297. but he'd have to go even further

  298. and step down into the sin

  299. and self-centeredness

  300. that broke the world in the first place.

  301. He would have to take your place

  302. at the judgment

  303. so you could join his place

  304. in the kingdom.

  305. That's what the king does

  306. for you and me.

  307. And that's why it's such good news

  308. that God's kingdom

  309. has come in Jesus.

  310. So do you believe that?

  311. Do you believe that God's kingdom

  312. has arrived in Jesus?

  313. that here lies the secret,

  314. the answer to the healing of the world,

  315. the crucified rabbi from Galilee,

  316. the risen and reigning Lord Jesus?

  317. That is the very proclamation

  318. of Christianity from beginning to end.

  319. And if so,

  320. if you do believe that,

  321. how should you respond?

  322. Well, that brings us

  323. to the rest of our passage.

  324. In verses 16 through 20,

  325. what we see is Jesus' call.

  326. And these verses give us

  327. a vivid picture

  328. of what the end of verse 15 means.

  329. Jesus says in verse 15, right,

  330. repent and believe the gospel.

  331. Well, what does that mean?

  332. Well, we see it here

  333. in verses 16 through 20.

  334. When Jesus comes to Simon,

  335. whom Jesus will give

  336. the new name Peter a little later,

  337. when he comes to Simon and Andrew

  338. and James and John,

  339. he says, follow me.

  340. And what do they do?

  341. They leave their nets

  342. and they leave their family

  343. and they follow him.

  344. Now, let me point out three things

  345. about this call.

  346. First, Jesus says, follow me, right?

  347. He is the object of the call.

  348. Without qualification,

  349. without hesitation,

  350. Jesus says, follow me.

  351. And that was very radical

  352. in the first century.

  353. It wasn't something

  354. that other teachers

  355. or rabbis would do.

  356. You know, notice he doesn't say

  357. like all the Old Testament prophets,

  358. follow Torah,

  359. follow the law of Moses.

  360. And he doesn't say

  361. like everyone says today,

  362. follow your heart.

  363. You know,

  364. a dream is a wish

  365. the heart makes.

  366. Find it and follow it.

  367. Keep navel gazing

  368. until you discover

  369. your true self, right?

  370. No.

  371. Jesus says, follow me.

  372. If you want to be part

  373. of God's kingdom,

  374. you must follow me.

  375. And that means

  376. you must leave something behind.

  377. Your nets

  378. and your family.

  379. If you want to understand

  380. the real meaning

  381. of Jesus' call to repent,

  382. repent,

  383. here it is.

  384. Repentance, you see.

  385. Again,

  386. it's not this sort of

  387. narrow religious word.

  388. We hear the word repent

  389. and we think it means

  390. sort of like

  391. be sorry for breaking the rules.

  392. Well, it is that,

  393. but it's deeper than that.

  394. In reality,

  395. repentance is a whole

  396. life shift

  397. of allegiance.

  398. The direction

  399. of your life changes.

  400. What defines your life

  401. right now?

  402. Your vocation?

  403. Your work?

  404. Your family?

  405. Your people?

  406. Your tribe?

  407. I think for most of us,

  408. it's usually one

  409. or the other

  410. of those two things,

  411. isn't it?

  412. It's either my work

  413. that defines me

  414. or it's my people

  415. that define me, right?

  416. You meet someone new

  417. and eventually

  418. they're going to ask you,

  419. so what do you do?

  420. Right?

  421. And then you tell them

  422. your job

  423. or where are you from

  424. or who are you a part?

  425. What, you know,

  426. what's your people, right?

  427. I'm a Mets fan

  428. or whatever, you know.

  429. Jesus says,

  430. you have to leave them both

  431. and follow me.

  432. I'm what defines you now,

  433. Jesus says.

  434. Now, you might be thinking

  435. that was easy

  436. for a handful of poor fishermen

  437. on the shores of Galilee.

  438. What did they have to lose, right?

  439. But, you know,

  440. the reality is

  441. Simon and Andrew

  442. and James and John,

  443. you know,

  444. they weren't sort of

  445. poor, desperate fishermen

  446. with nothing to lose.

  447. I think that's a pretty,

  448. pretty big historical misconception

  449. we have

  450. about these first disciples.

  451. You know,

  452. when we look at the history,

  453. we see that

  454. the fishing industry

  455. around the Sea of Galilee

  456. was actually this sort of

  457. thriving business

  458. in the first century.

  459. And it wasn't just

  460. sort of a local trade.

  461. You know,

  462. you remember,

  463. in the Greco-Roman world,

  464. fish was like

  465. the staple food, right?

  466. Everyone ate fish

  467. all the time.

  468. It's how they got

  469. their protein.

  470. And fish

  471. from the Sea of Galilee

  472. were exported

  473. and prized

  474. and valued

  475. as far south

  476. as Alexandria

  477. and Egypt

  478. and as far north

  479. as Antioch

  480. and Syria,

  481. which were two

  482. of the biggest cities

  483. in the Roman Empire.

  484. So the fishermen

  485. on the Sea of Galilee

  486. were actually competing

  487. in an international

  488. Mediterranean market

  489. and by all accounts,

  490. they were pretty successful

  491. at it.

  492. I mean,

  493. consider Zebedee

  494. right here,

  495. the father of James

  496. and John.

  497. He has hired servants

  498. working for him.

  499. These aren't poor fishermen

  500. living hand to mouth.

  501. So what were Andrew

  502. and Simon

  503. and James and John

  504. walking away from?

  505. They were walking away

  506. from a thriving

  507. family business

  508. in a culture

  509. where family

  510. meant everything.

  511. In other words,

  512. they had everything

  513. to lose.

  514. So why did they do it?

  515. What would make them

  516. drop everything

  517. and follow Jesus?

  518. Well,

  519. we know from

  520. John's Gospel

  521. that they had met

  522. Jesus

  523. and even spent

  524. some time with him

  525. before this encounter

  526. in Galilee.

  527. So Jesus wasn't

  528. a totally unknown

  529. quantity to them.

  530. But still,

  531. this moment

  532. right here

  533. on the shores

  534. of Galilee

  535. while they're at

  536. their boats

  537. and with their family

  538. and working

  539. on their nets,

  540. this is the decisive

  541. moment.

  542. Why did they go?

  543. What was it

  544. about Jesus

  545. that they were willing

  546. to leave everything

  547. and follow him?

  548. Well,

  549. I think that question

  550. is exactly

  551. the question

  552. that Mark wants

  553. his readers

  554. to be asking.

  555. What would make

  556. four ordinary,

  557. prosperous men

  558. drop everything

  559. to follow this Jesus?

  560. Aren't you curious?

  561. Don't you want to see

  562. what they saw?

  563. And Mark's Gospel

  564. takes us

  565. on a journey

  566. where we can do

  567. just that,

  568. to see in Jesus

  569. what they saw.

  570. So if you're wondering

  571. what would make

  572. people leave

  573. their job

  574. or leave

  575. their family

  576. and follow Jesus,

  577. you need to stay

  578. tuned

  579. and keep reading.

  580. But I like

  581. what Jerome,

  582. the church father,

  583. has to say

  584. about this passage

  585. writing in the

  586. fourth or fifth century,

  587. I think it is.

  588. He writes,

  589. there must have been

  590. something

  591. divinely compelling

  592. in the Savior's

  593. guileless

  594. countenance.

  595. There must have been

  596. something divinely

  597. compelling

  598. in the Savior's

  599. guileless

  600. countenance

  601. that persons

  602. merely upon

  603. seeing him

  604. could trust.

  605. Just

  606. one

  607. real look

  608. at Jesus

  609. is what it takes

  610. to trust him.

  611. Now,

  612. will you literally

  613. have to quit

  614. your job

  615. and abandon

  616. your family

  617. to follow Jesus?

  618. Some of you

  619. might be thinking,

  620. I kind of don't

  621. like my job

  622. and my family

  623. annoys me.

  624. I would love

  625. to quit everything

  626. and follow Jesus.

  627. Sign me up!

  628. Right?

  629. Right?

  630. Well,

  631. no.

  632. You know,

  633. more often than not

  634. in the Gospels,

  635. Jesus tells people

  636. who trust in him

  637. to go home

  638. and tell your family

  639. and your hometown

  640. how much I've done

  641. for you.

  642. The point here

  643. is that work

  644. and family,

  645. vocation

  646. and tribe,

  647. however you define it,

  648. they don't have

  649. our ultimate

  650. allegiance anymore.

  651. They aren't

  652. our identity

  653. anymore.

  654. And that means

  655. if we have to quit

  656. our jobs to follow

  657. Jesus,

  658. we would.

  659. And if we have

  660. to leave our social

  661. tribe or our social

  662. network,

  663. we will.

  664. He gets the priority

  665. over everything else.

  666. That's real repentance.

  667. And that's what it means

  668. to follow Jesus

  669. and enter God's kingdom.

  670. But notice the second

  671. thing about this call.

  672. Notice that Jesus says,

  673. follow me

  674. and I will make you

  675. something.

  676. I will make you

  677. become

  678. fishers of men,

  679. he says.

  680. Now of course

  681. Jesus is using

  682. an obvious wordplay

  683. on their profession

  684. but there's also

  685. a subtle allusion

  686. here to the Old Testament.

  687. Earlier in the service

  688. we read from

  689. the prophet Jeremiah

  690. where Jeremiah

  691. looks ahead

  692. to when God

  693. is going to judge

  694. and save

  695. his people

  696. and even extend

  697. his kingdom

  698. to the Gentiles.

  699. And what does

  700. Jeremiah say?

  701. He says,

  702. the Lord through

  703. Jeremiah says,

  704. I'm going to send

  705. out fishers

  706. and I'm going

  707. to send

  708. out hunters

  709. and I'm going

  710. to gather

  711. them all in.

  712. So you see,

  713. the call

  714. to follow Jesus

  715. isn't a call

  716. to mere

  717. observation.

  718. Following Jesus

  719. isn't about

  720. becoming a mere

  721. spectator

  722. to the work

  723. of God's kingdom.

  724. It's about

  725. becoming a participant.

  726. with this new

  727. identity

  728. comes a new

  729. mission,

  730. a new purpose,

  731. a new reason

  732. to get up

  733. in the morning.

  734. Peter and Andrew

  735. and James and John

  736. they were presumably

  737. really good

  738. at catching fish.

  739. That's what got

  740. them up every morning

  741. probably a lot earlier

  742. than you and I

  743. get up in the morning,

  744. right?

  745. But now

  746. it wasn't going

  747. to be about

  748. bringing fish

  749. from water

  750. to land.

  751. Now it was going

  752. to be about

  753. seeing people

  754. brought from

  755. death to life.

  756. Seeing men

  757. and women

  758. lost under

  759. the curse

  760. of the fall

  761. come to know

  762. that God's kingdom

  763. had come in Jesus

  764. and that forgiveness

  765. and new life

  766. could be found

  767. in Him.

  768. You see,

  769. every follower

  770. of Jesus

  771. is also

  772. a minister

  773. of Jesus.

  774. God has

  775. good works

  776. prepared

  777. for you

  778. to do.

  779. God wants

  780. you to not

  781. just enjoy

  782. His forgiveness

  783. and grace

  784. but to join

  785. the mission

  786. of advancing

  787. His kingdom.

  788. A Christian

  789. who doesn't

  790. serve

  791. and minister

  792. is sort of

  793. like a kite

  794. that never flies,

  795. right?

  796. What a shame

  797. to be stuck

  798. on the ground

  799. when you could

  800. be feeling

  801. the wind

  802. carrying you

  803. up

  804. into the sky

  805. and clouds.

  806. That's where

  807. God is calling you.

  808. God is calling you.

  809. The call of Jesus

  810. is the call

  811. to join the work.

  812. Of course,

  813. Peter and Andrew

  814. and James and John,

  815. they probably

  816. didn't understand

  817. all this at first,

  818. right?

  819. And they certainly

  820. were not ready

  821. for it.

  822. Ah,

  823. but notice carefully

  824. what Jesus says.

  825. He says,

  826. I will make you

  827. become fishers of men.

  828. Now,

  829. I have to confess,

  830. as I was studying

  831. for the preaching

  832. this week

  833. and I read that verse,

  834. I thought,

  835. that is a clumsy

  836. translation,

  837. right?

  838. Certainly,

  839. we could have

  840. cleaned that up

  841. a little bit

  842. and made that

  843. a little smoother,

  844. but actually,

  845. as I got into it,

  846. it's a really good

  847. translation of that verse,

  848. even though it sounds

  849. a little strange.

  850. I will make you

  851. become fishers of men.

  852. In other words,

  853. Jesus is promising here

  854. that along the way

  855. of following Him,

  856. He will make them

  857. what they need to be.

  858. He will make them

  859. become what they need

  860. to be in order to do

  861. the work He's called

  862. them to do.

  863. The call of Jesus

  864. is a call to follow

  865. and become.

  866. So,

  867. if you're thinking

  868. that you're not ready

  869. to follow Jesus,

  870. you're not ready

  871. to follow Him

  872. and join the mission,

  873. if you're thinking

  874. you're not ready,

  875. well,

  876. you're right.

  877. no one is ever ready

  878. to follow Jesus.

  879. That's why He says,

  880. follow me

  881. and I will make you become.

  882. So,

  883. trust Him.

  884. Put your life

  885. in His hands

  886. and He

  887. will make you

  888. become.

  889. To be sure,

  890. He will use all sorts

  891. of means

  892. to get you there.

  893. He'll use the means

  894. of worship

  895. and community

  896. and His Word

  897. and He'll use the means

  898. of His Spirit

  899. and prayer

  900. and He'll even use

  901. the means

  902. of suffering

  903. and trials.

  904. But the promise

  905. stands,

  906. I'll make you

  907. become.

  908. So,

  909. you don't need

  910. to clean up

  911. your act

  912. or get your life

  913. together

  914. before you follow Jesus.

  915. It's His job

  916. to do the cleaning

  917. and the changing.

  918. What you need

  919. to do

  920. is let down

  921. your nets

  922. and follow Him.

  923. But lastly,

  924. notice one more thing

  925. about this call,

  926. this call

  927. to enter

  928. God's kingdom

  929. and this call

  930. to follow King Jesus.

  931. It's also a call

  932. to a fellowship.

  933. Jesus knows us

  934. and calls us

  935. individually by name.

  936. Isn't that wonderful?

  937. Simon,

  938. Andrew,

  939. James,

  940. John,

  941. we're known

  942. and we're called

  943. by name

  944. but we join

  945. something bigger

  946. than ourselves.

  947. Following Jesus

  948. means following Him

  949. alongside others.

  950. There's no such thing

  951. as a lone ranger Christian.

  952. We have to do this

  953. together.

  954. And when we do it together,

  955. following Jesus

  956. as our King,

  957. then it's like

  958. the mustard seed

  959. that Jesus mentions

  960. in Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  961. Jesus said,

  962. with what can we compare

  963. the kingdom of God

  964. or what parable

  965. shall we use for it?

  966. it's like a grain

  967. of mustard seed

  968. which when sown

  969. in the ground

  970. is the smallest

  971. of all the seeds

  972. on earth.

  973. Yet when it's sown,

  974. it grows up

  975. and becomes

  976. larger than all

  977. the garden plants

  978. and puts out

  979. large branches

  980. so that the birds

  981. of the air

  982. can make nests

  983. in its shade.

  984. The kingdom

  985. starts small

  986. and then it grows

  987. and then it becomes

  988. a place

  989. of shelter

  990. and shade,

  991. a place of healing

  992. and a place

  993. of home.

  994. So according to Mark's gospel,

  995. according to Jesus,

  996. what we're waiting for

  997. is here.

  998. It's here

  999. in Jesus,

  1000. the crucified

  1001. and risen Lord.

  1002. And of course,

  1003. it's here

  1004. oftentimes

  1005. in a seed.

  1006. Right?

  1007. God's kingdom

  1008. in Jesus

  1009. one day

  1010. will come in fullness

  1011. and then the glory

  1012. of God

  1013. will cover the earth

  1014. like the waters

  1015. cover the sea

  1016. and that day

1017. is still in the future

  1018. but already

  1019. that kingdom

  1020. has begun.

  1021. The fall

  1022. is starting

  1023. to set in.

  1024. Winter is passing

  1025. and the signs

  1026. of spring

  1027. are starting

  1028. to spring up

  1029. so come

  1030. and follow him.

  1031. Mark says,

  1032. let down your nets

  1033. and follow him.

  1034. He's not looking

  1035. for polish

  1036. and prestige.

  1037. He's not looking

  1038. for perfect people

  1039. because there are none

  1040. he's calling you

  1041. right where you are

  1042. right there

  1043. in the ordinary.

  1044. Come and follow me.

  1045. Come enter

  1046. God's kingdom.

  1047. Come join

  1048. God's reign

  1049. and let the healing

  1050. begin.

  1051. Let's pray together.

  1052. Our Lord Jesus

  1053. as we pause

  1054. and take a moment

  1055. before you

  1056. we ask that you

  1057. would soften

  1058. our hearts

  1059. to you

  1060. and to your call.

1061. God some of us here

  1062. have heeded this call

  1063. many years ago

  1064. and we continue

  1065. to heed it

  1066. and we thank you

  1067. that that is not

  1068. because of our own

  1069. wisdom or grace

  1070. or strength

  1071. but because of your

  1072. grace and Holy Spirit.

  1073. Lord renew in us

  1074. that sense

  1075. to let down

  1076. our nets

  1077. and to even

  1078. leave our family

  1079. and follow you.

  1080. Father for those

  1081. who are feeling

1082. the tug of this call

  1083. but are perhaps

  1084. unsure

  1085. would you help them

1086. to see in the face

  1087. of Jesus

1088. one who can be trusted

  1089. and who has gone

  1090. to the very uttermost

  1091. to love them

  1092. and bring them home.

  1093. O Lord

  1094. we pray

  1095. that your kingdom

  1096. would come

1097. in and through our church

  1098. for Jesus' sake

  1099. Father.

  1100. Amen.

  1101. Amen.

  1102. Amen.

  1103. Amen.

  1104. Amen.

  1105. Amen.

  1106. Amen.

  1107. Amen.

  1108. Amen.

  1109. Amen.

  1110. Amen.

  1111. Amen.

  1112. Amen.

  1113. Amen.
