  1. All right, well, welcome, friends. It's good to see you.

  2. Last week, we considered the context for any affirmation of the authority of Scripture.

  3. How our cultural context is one deeply suspicious of any claims to authority.

  4. Come on in, friends. Just in time.

  5. Our cultural context is one deeply suspicious of any claims to authority.

  6. But we also considered how the biblical context answers this cultural concern

  7. by revealing how God exercises his authority as an instrument of holy good.

  8. We explored how worthy Jesus is of our trust.

  9. As one who has authority, one meek and lowly of heart.

  10. One who came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom.

  11. Now, this morning, we want to consider more specifically God's authority as it is invested and involved in the Scriptures, the Christian Scriptures.

  12. Now, the authority of Scripture, the Christian Scriptures, at least in the West, since the Enlightenment,

  13. has come under unprecedented and sustained attack.

  14. And indeed, for many traditional believers, this stress of this onslaught has proved absolutely overwhelming.

  15. And they found themselves, often to their great sorrow and confusion,

  16. bereaved of their once firm and fundamental conviction as to the trustworthiness and authority of the Bible.

  17. John Ruskin, the greatest theet, confided to a friend that he broke out into cold sweat

  18. at the sound of every strike of the geologist's hammer.

  19. For fear that it would uncover something that would rob him of some precious Bible truth.

  20. A loss that Matthew Arnold's poem, Dover Beach, likens to a receding tide.

  21. The sea of faith was once too at the full and round earth shore lay like the fold of a bright girdled furled.

  22. But now I only hear its melancholy, long withdrawing roar,

  23. retreating to the breath of the night wing down the vast edges drear and naked shingles of the world.

  24. Now, for some of you here, the notion of doubt dealing difficulties with the Bible is completely alien.

  25. Whatever could they mean, problems with the Bible?

  26. God said it, I believe it, and that settles it.

  27. If history or science or moral intuition seems to disagree with the scriptures,

  28. so much the worse for history or science or moral intuition.

  29. And indeed, perhaps, for some of you, the divine God-breathed character of the Bible

  30. is reinforced every time you open its precious pages

  31. and find in them the Savior you have come to love.

  32. Its spiritual work of comfort and guidance and healing and succor is so deep and wonderful.

  33. You could never doubt that the words of scripture are the very words of God.

  34. But there are others in the Christian fold for whom their experience of the Bible

  35. has raised many a question, some pressing.

  36. Some pages of scripture are, for them, not obvious candidates for God's words.

  37. These doubts, often agonizing, need not reflect infidelity.

  38. They may come out of a context of faith and reflect something of Mary's query.

  39. How can these things be?

  40. And I want to direct my comments this morning chiefly to those among us

  41. for whom these gnawing questions are a reality.

  42. Who feel some difficulty in affirming the Bible in all of its parts as God's word

  43. and as such divinely authoritative in all that it affirms.

  44. And indeed, in all likelihood, largely inhabit a world in which such a conviction

  45. is thought utterly implausible, ludicrous, even maybe morally reprehensible.

  46. So I want to first suggest some lines of reflection,

  47. which to my mind at least constitute strong grounds for maintaining the authority of the Bible,

  48. even in the midst of persisting difficulties.

  49. And our time will only allow me to be suggestive here, not exhaustive.

  50. But I hope fruitfully to seed your own further reflections that they might have in them seminally

  51. all that is needed for a harvest of strong conviction on this vital point.

  52. So hopefully, then today, laying this foundation,

  53. next week we'll take up the remaining sheer and stress on the structure,

  54. the foundation that we've laid.

  55. I will next week offer then some considerations,

  56. which I hope will render any persistent problems a little bit less problematic.

  57. How do we deal with the remaining doubt?

  58. So that'll be next week, Lord willing, if we're there.

  59. So let's begin with a word of prayer.

  60. Father, as we take up this topic,

  61. we especially crave the presence of your Holy Spirit,

  62. both in your Spirit's clarifying work,

  63. forming in us convictions,

  64. and in his comforting work,

  65. addressing our doubts and anxieties,

  66. which can easily gnaw on our souls

  67. and rob us of our joy.

  68. So we ask for his presence,

  69. confidently remembering your assurance

  70. that it would indeed be so.

  71. We commit our time to you.

  72. In Jesus' name.

  73. Amen.

  74. Okay, here we go, team.

  75. So let's consider some grounds

  76. for maintaining the authority of Scripture.

  77. And we're dealing with

  78. a wonderfully rich tapestry of warrant here.

  79. And any number of strands could be explored.

  80. We might take up the claims

  81. that Scripture makes for itself

  82. in reference to its truthfulness.

  83. So for instance,

  84. Psalm 119, verse 60 says,

    Psalms 119:60

  85. the sum of your word is truth.

  86. Notice, considering the whole collectively.

  87. But then,

  88. but then,

  89. David goes on and states,

  90. concerning its individual parts,

  91. and every one of your righteous rules

  92. endures forever.

  93. Or Psalm 12, verse 6,

    Psalms 12:6

  94. the words of the Lord are pure words,

  95. like silver refined in a furnace,

  96. purified seven times.

  97. clearly,

  98. clearly,

  99. no dross or ore,

  100. mingled,

  101. making it unreliable.

  102. It's a real potent image, isn't it?

  103. Refined seven times over.

  104. And in fact,

  105. the Hebrew word translated here as pure

  106. gives us another image.

  107. For it was that Hebrew word,

  108. tahor,

  109. tahor,

  110. I'm not good at Hebrew pronunciation.

  111. It was used,

  112. that was the word that was used

  113. to communicate ritual purity,

  114. as was required for the sacrificial lamb,

  115. without spot or blemish.

  116. That's what God's word is like.

  117. Utterly free from any defect,

  118. like that sacrificial spotless lamb.

  119. And any attentive reader of the scriptures

  120. will know that such claims

  121. are just studded throughout the Bible

  122. and could be multiplied effortlessly.

  123. These are just two.

  124. They're so commonplace.

  125. So that would be one strand of argument,

  126. just going through and looking at

  127. what sort of claims the Bible makes for itself.

  128. Some might plausibly object,

  129. well, wait a minute,

  130. isn't that circular?

  131. Yeah, I mean,

  132. we want to know if we can trust the Bible.

  133. So we look at the Bible

  134. and the Bible says,

  135. yes, it's trustworthy.

  136. You know, it's circular.

  137. Well, yes, it is.

  138. But anytime you're arguing

  139. for your final authority,

  140. you will either be circular

  141. or you will be inconsistent.

  142. Because if I'm arguing for my final authority

  143. and say, well, the Bible's authoritative

  144. and I'm,

  145. well, why do you believe that?

  146. If I say, well,

  147. it seems to make sense,

  148. it pragmatically works out,

  149. well, then my ultimate authority

  150. is pragmatism,

  151. not the word.

  152. So you're either going to be circular

  153. when you're arguing

  154. for your final authority

  155. or you're going to be inconsistent.

  156. Makes sense to me.

  157. Well, then reason is your final authority.

  158. So you got to do that.

  159. So there's one line.

  160. What does the Bible say about itself?

  161. But another particularly compelling line of thought

  162. explores the attitude of Jesus himself

  163. toward the scriptures.

  164. And this would make sense

  165. that we would consider that

  166. because as disciples of Jesus,

  167. what it means to be a disciple

  168. is to conform our views

  169. to the ones that Jesus had.

  170. our thoughts,

  171. we want to conform to his mind

  172. in all matters

  173. so we would naturally act.

  174. Well, what was his view

  175. of scripture's authority?

  176. Seeking to adopt that very view

  177. as our own

  178. if we're his disciples.

  179. And we can get at that,

  180. his view,

  181. straightforwardly revealed

  182. in his direct statements.

  183. And there are plenty of them.

  184. So, for example,

  185. on the Sermon on the Mount,

  186. Matthew 5.18,

  187. he says,

  188. truly I say to you,

  189. truly,

  190. again,

  191. a solemn asserberation.

  192. I'm really confident about this.

  193. Truly I say to you,

  194. until heaven and earth

  195. pass away,

  196. not the smallest

  197. letter or stroke

  198. shall pass away

  199. from the law.

  200. And by law,

  201. Jesus is just using

  202. common parlance

  203. of the Hebrew culture

  204. in his day.

  205. Not pointing to just

  206. one single little bit

  207. of scripture,

  208. the law of Moses,

  209. but speaking of the whole thing

  210. as they commonly did,

  211. considering it

  212. in its commanding form.

  213. Indeed,

  214. taking up this very topic

  215. that we are taking up

  216. in its authoritative

  217. commanding form.

  218. All of scripture

  219. commands us

  220. because it comes

  221. with God's authority.

  222. So not a jot

  223. or a tittle.

  224. That is,

  225. not the least part

  226. shall prove to be

  227. less than of

  228. abiding authority.

  229. Or,

  230. as he tersely states,

  231. recorded in John 10.35,

  232. scripture cannot

  233. be broken.

  234. That is,

  235. it can never fail

  236. in its judgments

  237. and statements

  238. and is incapable

  239. of proving false.

  240. Or again,

  241. Matthew 22.29,

  242. is telling.

  243. Regarding the

  244. much married wife

  245. conundrum

  246. expounded by the Sadducees.

  247. Remember that?

  248. Jesus simply says,

  249. oh,

  250. you err,

  251. not knowing

  252. the scriptures.

  253. Remember that?

  254. That is,

  255. had you known

  256. the scriptures,

  257. you wouldn't have

  258. made this mistake.

  259. The assumption

  260. is clear.

  261. Scripture is

  262. an infallible guide

  263. to truth

  264. in these matters.

  265. And had you clung

  266. to it,

  267. well,

  268. you would have

  269. been right.

  270. Satan in the,

  271. Jesus in the wilderness.

  272. Oh,

  273. that's a good one.

  274. Yeah,

  275. yeah.

  276. That's,

  277. yeah,

  278. I'll get to that

  279. in just a moment.

  280. That's,

  281. I will remember

  282. that one.

  283. So,

  284. summing up

  285. his conviction,

  286. Jesus states

  287. in the course

  288. of his high priestly

  289. prayer,

  290. addressing the Father,

  291. your word

  292. is truth.

  293. John 17,

  294. 17.

  295. So these,

  296. some of his

  297. direct statements,

  298. but even if we did

  299. not have these

  300. explicit statements

  301. of Jesus

  302. on the scriptures

  303. authority,

  304. just his whole

  305. manner

  306. is decisively

  307. telling

  308. in its

  309. implicit

  310. presupposition.

  311. Again,

  312. if you're familiar

  313. with the gospels,

  314. you're aware

  315. of this reality.

  316. To settle

  317. any controversy,

  318. Jesus simply

  319. quotes scripture

  320. as decisively

  321. authoritative

  322. to settle the matter

  323. as he does

  324. in Matthew 19,

    Matthew 19:4

  325. verse 4,

  326. concerning divorce.

  327. Oh,

  328. here's a question

  329. for you,

  330. Jesus.

  331. Oh,

  332. have you not read?

  333. This is what

  334. the scripture says.

  335. Boom.

  336. End of issue.

  337. As Jesus asserted,

  338. and this is what

  339. Raul just brought up,

  340. Jesus asserted

  341. against Satan

  342. in the temptation,

  343. Matthew 4,

  344. 4.

  345. Man shall live

  346. by every word

  347. that proceeds

  348. out of the mouth

  349. of God.

  350. And his practice

  351. testifies

  352. to his confidence

  353. as to every word.

  354. For Jesus

  355. is quite comfortable

  356. hanging his arguments,

  357. letting them

  358. turn entirely

  359. on a single word

  360. of scripture.

  361. Even a single

  362. tense

  363. of a single

  364. word

  365. of scripture.

  366. So,

  367. for example,

  368. we see this

  369. in Matthew 22,

  370. 32.

  371. Again,

  372. taking up

  373. with the Sadducees

  374. on the matter

  375. of the resurrection.

  376. Remember that

  377. where he says,

  378. oh,

  379. oh,

  380. oh,

  381. oh,

  382. no,

  383. no,

  384. what do the scriptures

  385. say?

  386. I am

  387. the God

  388. of Abraham,

  389. Isaac,

  390. and Jacob.

  391. In other words,

  392. not I was their God

  393. when they were alive.

  394. I am

  395. currently

  396. their God.

  397. In other words,

  398. they are still

  399. arrived.

  400. God is still

  401. their God

  402. because they

  403. are still alive.

  404. Notice the whole

  405. argument is just

  406. on the tense

  407. of that.

  408. There's more

  409. to the argument

  410. to that,

  411. but that's

  412. a lot of it.

  413. Not only

  414. God is still

  415. their God

  416. because they

  417. are still alive,

  418. but they are

  419. still alive

  420. because God

  421. is their God,

  422. their personal God.

  423. God is so

  424. involved with them

  425. intimately,

  426. he can call them,

  427. I am the God

  428. of Abraham,

  429. Isaac,

  430. and Jacob.

  431. I have a special

  432. relationship,

  433. an intimate

  434. relationship with

  435. them.

  436. Therefore,

  437. because that's

  438. so,

  439. it's impossible

  440. to think that

  441. they could just

  442. die and go.

  443. So that's part

  444. of his argument,

  445. but part of it

  446. is just based

  447. on the tense,

  448. just the tense.

  449. Recall his

  450. remark in the

  451. Sermon on the

  452. Mount,

  453. remember Matthew

  454. 5,

  455. 18,

  456. authoritative

  457. down to the

  458. last stroke,

  459. or in Hebrew

  460. just jot or a

  461. tittle,

  462. the smallest

  463. little,

  464. he illustrates

  465. his conviction

  466. in reference

  467. to Psalm 110

    Psalms 110:1

  468. verse 1

  469. where he

  470. points out,

  471. do you remember

  472. that passage

  473. when he's

  474. dealing with

  475. the Pharisees

  476. and asking,

  477. hey,

  478. think about

  479. who the

  480. Messiah is.

  481. And he

  482. points out

  483. that David

  484. calls the

  485. Messiah

  486. Lord.

  487. The Lord,

  488. God the

  489. Father,

  490. said to

  491. my Lord,

  492. the Messiah,

  493. sit at thy

  494. right hand,

  495. and so forth.

  496. But it all

  497. pivots on

  498. just one

  499. stroke that

  500. makes it a

  501. reference,

  502. David's reference

  503. to my

  504. Lord in

  505. that.

  506. one stroke

  507. would have

  508. been a

  509. little bit

  510. longer,

  511. would have

  512. changed the

  513. reference on

  514. that.

  515. So the

  516. argument depends

  517. on just

  518. slightly

  519. lengthening the

  520. tiniest little

  521. jot.

  522. The argument

  523. depends on a

  524. single stroke of

  525. scripture,

  526. and Jesus

  527. doesn't hesitate

  528. to confidently

  529. assert it.

  530. So this is his

  531. practice.

  532. I'm supposed to be

  533. talking about good

  534. books on these

  535. as I go along.

  536. So one of

  537. these is John

  538. Wenham,

  539. an English

  540. scholar,

  541. and the book

  542. is called

  543. Christ and the

  544. Bible.

  545. It's an old

  546. book,

  547. but I don't

  548. think it's

  549. been improved

  550. upon.

  551. It's fantastic.

  552. I think it was

  553. out in 72,

  554. University Press,

  555. John Wenham's

  556. Christ and the

  557. Bible.

  558. So I think

  559. these in

  560. themselves,

  561. one,

  562. we've looked

  563. at the claims

  564. of scripture

  565. that it makes

  566. for itself,

  567. and the

  568. attitude of

  569. Jesus himself

  570. concerning

  571. scripture,

  572. I think those

  573. constitute good

  574. grounds for

  575. affirming

  576. scripture's

  577. authority.

  578. And these

  579. lines of

  580. argument are

  581. commonly and

  582. justly invoked

  583. and rightly

  584. part of an

  585. argument's

  586. stout weave,

  587. stout weave.

  588. But the

  589. strand that I

  590. want particularly

  591. to take up

  592. and reflect

  593. upon with you,

  594. we might call,

  595. or I'm going

  596. to call it

  597. this,

  598. the Trinitarian

  599. ontology of

  600. scripture.

  601. The Trinitarian

  602. ontology of

  603. scripture.

  604. That is,

  605. I want to

  606. explore the

  607. question,

  608. what are the

  609. implications

  610. for the

  611. character of

  612. scripture,

  613. of the

  614. involvement in

  615. them of the

  616. trinity,

  617. Father,

  618. Son,

  619. and Spirit?

  620. What are the

  621. implications for

  622. the characters

  623. of scripture,

  624. of the

  625. involvement in

  626. them of the

  627. trinity,

  628. Father,

  629. Son,

  630. and Spirit?

  631. And while we

  632. will consider all

  633. three persons of

  634. the trinity,

  635. and we'll kind of

  636. go through them

  637. one at a time,

  638. given, as we

  639. know, the

  640. intimate relations

  641. within the

  642. trinity, a

  643. crisp parsing

  644. out of their

  645. various involvements

  646. is a little

  647. artificial,

  648. because you

  649. say, wow,

  650. is that really

  651. the father?

  652. Is that really

  653. the son?

  654. After all,

  655. any action of

  656. one person of

  657. the trinity

  658. entails the

  659. involvement of

  660. all, what

  661. theologians call

  662. the perichoresis,

  663. or it's a

  664. Greek word kind

  665. of for an

  666. interwoven or

  667. interlocking

  668. dance of

  669. the persons

  670. of the

  671. trinity,

  672. peri,

  673. around,

  674. choresis,

  675. a choreography,

  676. kind of an

  677. interwoven dance

  678. of all the

  679. persons of the

  680. trinity together

  681. in all of

  682. their activities.

  683. So a little

  684. bit of

  685. artificial to

  686. separate them

  687. out.

  688. But anyway,

  689. even if we

  690. can't separate

  691. them out for

  692. our purpose as

  693. to the

  694. involvements in

  695. scripture of

  696. the persons of

  697. the trinity,

  698. what counts is

  699. not the

  700. distinctiveness of

  701. their involvement,

  702. but it's

  703. decisiveness.

  704. That's really

  705. what the

  706. argument is

  707. going to be

  708. based upon.

  709. So let's

  710. go into

  711. that.

  712. What about

  713. the involvement

  714. of the

  715. father?

  716. Let's go

  717. back to the

  718. beginning and

  719. reflect upon

  720. the relationship

  721. between God's

  722. person and

  723. the words that

  724. he speaks.

  725. And scripture

  726. indicates a

  727. very close

  728. relationship

  729. between them.

  730. Think back

  731. of Eden

  732. where God

  733. establishes a

  734. relationship

  735. between himself

  736. and Adam

  737. and Eve

  738. in part

  739. by means

  740. of a

  741. command.

  742. Remember?

  743. Do not

  744. eat from

  745. the tree of

  746. the knowledge

  747. of good and

  748. evil.

  749. And when

  750. they disobeyed

  751. this verbal,

  752. this spoken

  753. command,

  754. they fractured

  755. their relationship

  756. with God

  757. himself.

  758. When his

  759. words are

  760. set aside,

  761. he himself

  762. is set

  763. aside.

  764. This helps

  765. us to see

  766. how God

  767. has invested

  768. himself in

  769. his words.

  770. Indeed, in a

  771. sense, he has

  772. identified himself

  773. with his

  774. words.

  775. whatever

  776. somebody does

  777. with God's

  778. words, they

  779. do to

  780. God

  781. himself.

  782. And this

  783. covenantal, I

  784. think we could

  785. call it a

  786. covenantal pattern,

  787. runs throughout

  788. scripture.

  789. And it is the

  790. fundamental way

  791. his redemptive

  792. relationship with

  793. his people

  794. unfolds and

  795. is expressed.

  796. The reality

  797. and nature

  798. of our

  799. relationship

  800. with God

  801. is determined

  802. by the

  803. reality and

  804. nature of

  805. our relationship

  806. to the

  807. words God

  808. speaks.

  809. Think of

  810. the Ark of

  811. Covenant

  812. containing the

  813. tablets of

  814. his words

  815. to us.

  816. His words

  817. were the

  818. mode by

  819. which he

  820. chose to be

  821. present among

  822. his people.

  823. So God's

  824. actions,

  825. including verbal

  826. actions, are

  827. a kind of

  828. extension of

  829. himself.

  830. To put

  831. trust in

  832. the covenant

  833. words God

  834. spoke to his

  835. people was

  836. to put trust

  837. in God

  838. himself.

  839. So, and

  840. think about

  841. this,

  842. communication

  843. from God

  844. is communion

  845. with God

  846. when met

  847. with a

  848. response of

  849. trust.

  850. Communication

  851. from God

  852. is communion

  853. with God

  854. when met

  855. with a

  856. response of

  857. trust.

  858. How we

  859. might wonder,

  860. did God

  861. speak to

  862. Adam and

  863. Eve in the

  864. garden or

  865. to his

  866. people,

  867. Abraham,

  868. Isaac,

  869. Jacob,

  870. Moses?

  871. Well, we're

  872. not told

  873. how, but

  874. as the

  875. Old Testament

  876. unfolds, one

  877. form of

  878. divine speaking

  879. does emerge

  880. as prominent.

  881. God's speech

  882. through his

  883. appointed

  884. prophets in

  885. words that

  886. they utter in

  887. ordinary human

  888. language.

  889. And the

  890. Bible gives

  891. no worked

  892. out theology

  893. or philosophical

  894. account.

  895. we could

  896. put some

  897. together,

  898. and some

  899. have done

  900. so,

  901. of how

  902. human words

  903. can be

  904. said to

  905. be God's

  906. words.

  907. There's no

  908. clear

  909. philosophical

  910. account for

  911. that in

  912. Scripture.

  913. But it

  914. does hint

  915. as to how

  916. it might

  917. be.

  918. It is

  919. interesting,

  920. and I

  921. think significant,

  922. that when

  923. the Bible

  924. speaks of

  925. God creating

  926. mankind in

  927. his image

  928. and likeness.

  929. Though we're

  930. not told

  931. exactly what

  932. this means

  933. by being

  934. created in

  935. his image

  936. and likeness.

  937. We have,

  938. remember,

  939. we have

  940. God speaking,

  941. let us

  942. make mankind

  943. in our own

  944. image.

  945. Then,

  946. he fashions

  947. mankind

  948. in his

  949. likeness,

  950. and then

  951. immediately

  952. addresses

  953. them in

  954. speech.

  955. Could not

  956. God's image

  957. and likeness

  958. then include

  959. a capacity

  960. for complex

  961. language

  962. reflecting

  963. God's own

  964. character?

  965. Though I

  966. don't think

  967. that the

  968. image of

  969. God is

  970. exhaustively

  971. this,

  972. it's more

  973. than just

  974. that,

  975. it,

  976. I think,

  977. includes

  978. this.

  979. It is

  980. this capacity

  981. for complex

  982. language.

  983. That's part

  984. of God's

  985. image in

  986. us.

  987. And if

  988. so,

  989. that language

  990. is a

  991. divine gift

  992. from God,

  993. then it

  994. is a

  995. point of

  996. contact,

  997. not a

  998. chasm

  999. between

  1000. the human

  1001. and the

  1002. divine.

  1003. God's

  1004. mind.

  1005. And this

  1006. is where I

  1007. think a

  1008. lot of

  1009. people get

  1010. this wrong.

  1011. Well,

  1012. our language

  1013. is human

  1014. and how

  1015. could human

  1016. language actually

  1017. ever be a

  1018. point of

  1019. contact with

  1020. the divine,

  1021. the transcendent?

  1022. How could it

  1023. be?

  1024. Well,

  1025. what if

  1026. actually our

  1027. language capacity

  1028. is a gift

  1029. of God,

  1030. an endowment?

  1031. And that's

  1032. what it

  1033. seems to

  1034. be.

  1035. Then it

  1036. would be a

  1037. point of

  1038. contact,

  1039. not a

  1040. chasm

  1041. between us.

  1042. Our

  1043. language can

  1044. be made

  1045. by God

  1046. to speak

  1047. truthfully

  1048. of Him

  1049. because

  1050. our

  1051. language

  1052. has its

  1053. origin

  1054. in Him

  1055. and

  1056. in ways

  1057. requisite

  1058. for

  1059. communication

  1060. is like

  1061. His own.

  1062. So,

  1063. throughout

  1064. Scripture,

  1065. we see

  1066. Scripture

  1067. presented as

  1068. God's

  1069. Word.

  1070. It is

  1071. divine

  1072. rhetoric.

  1073. And not

  1074. only that

  1075. portion in

  1076. which His

  1077. very finger,

  1078. we are told,

  1079. inscribed the

  1080. words upon

  1081. stone tablets,

  1082. but also,

  1083. as mentioned,

  1084. the prophetic

  1085. word, the

  1086. words that the

  1087. prophets speak

  1088. are divine

  1089. rhetoric.

  1090. As a

  1091. test by

  1092. the

  1093. repeated

  1094. refrain

  1095. that we

  1096. see again

  1097. and again,

  1098. and the

  1099. word of

  1100. the Lord

  1101. came to

  1102. Amos,

  1103. and the

  1104. word of

  1105. the Lord

  1106. came to

  1107. Jeremiah,

  1108. and the

  1109. word of

  1110. the Lord

  1111. came to

  1112. again and

  1113. again and

  1114. again.

  1115. And this

  1116. is true

  1117. whatever

  1118. genre

  1119. happened to

  1120. be the

  1121. prophet's

  1122. medium.

  1123. Sometimes

  1124. poetry,

  1125. sometimes

  1126. song,

  1127. narrative,

  1128. apocalyptic.

  1129. It's all

  1130. the word of

  1131. the Lord

  1132. coming to

  1133. the prophet.

  1134. prophet.

  1135. As

  1136. Hebrews 1.1

  1137. tells us,

  1138. God spoke

  1139. in the

  1140. prophets

  1141. in many

  1142. portions

  1143. and in

  1144. many ways,

  1145. but it's

  1146. still all

  1147. God

  1148. speaking

  1149. in these

  1150. many ways.

  1151. Continuing

  1152. with the

  1153. involvement of

  1154. the Father,

  1155. in 2 Timothy

  1156. 3.16,

  1157. Paul

  1158. describes

  1159. the relation

  1160. of the

  1161. Father to

  1162. Scripture

  1163. as one

  1164. of

  1165. literally

  1166. breathing

  1167. out

  1168. the

  1169. Scriptures.

  1170. Breathing

  1171. them

  1172. out.

  1173. All

  1174. Scripture

  1175. is

  1176. inspired

  1177. by God

  1178. and is

  1179. profitable

  1180. for and

  1181. on and

  1182. on it

  1183. goes.

  1184. And our

  1185. English

  1186. rendering

  1187. there

  1188. inspired

  1189. doesn't

  1190. really do

  1191. a great

  1192. job

  1193. translating

  1194. the

  1195. Greek

  1196. on this

  1197. because

  1198. you think

  1199. Shakespeare

  1200. is

  1201. inspired

  1202. or that

  1203. was an

  1204. inspiring

  1205. dessert.

  1206. But

  1207. literally

  1208. the word

  1209. theonoustos

  1210. literally

  1211. God

  1212. breathed.

  1213. So the

  1214. word,

  1215. the Scripture

  1216. is actually

  1217. exhaled

  1218. by God.

  1219. A lot

  1220. has been

  1221. written on

  1222. this.

  1223. Excuse me.

  1224. B.B.

  1225. Warfield

  1226. has done

  1227. extensive

  1228. work on

  1229. that.

  1230. In a

  1231. work called

  1232. The

  1233. Inspiration

  1234. and

  1235. Authority

  1236. of

  1237. Scripture

  1238. is

  1239. fantastic.

  1240. This

  1241. Swiss

  1242. scholar

  1243. Gausen.

  1244. And then

  1245. notice

  1246. all

  1247. Scripture

  1248. or

  1249. every

  1250. Scripture

  1251. could be

  1252. rendered

  1253. anyway

  1254. but it

  1255. doesn't

  1256. really

  1257. make

  1258. much

  1259. of a

  1260. difference.

  1261. All

  1262. involves

  1263. every

  1264. because

  1265. it is

  1266. all

  1267. inspired

  1268. not

  1269. just

  1270. the

  1271. bits

  1272. that

  1273. come

  1274. down

  1275. in

  1276. reported

  1277. speech

  1278. of the

  1279. Father.

  1280. The

  1281. bits

  1282. in

  1283. quotes

  1284. so to

  1285. speak.

  1286. Finger

  1287. on the

  1288. wall

  1289. many

  1290. many

  1291. you

  1292. have

  1293. been

  1294. weighed

  1295. in the

  1296. balances

  1297. and found

  1298. wanting

  1299. or the

  1300. voice

  1301. from

  1302. heaven

  1303. this

  1304. is my

  1305. beloved

  1306. son

  1307. in whom

  1308. I am

  1309. well

  1310. pleased.

  1311. We

  1312. might

  1313. call the

  1314. quotation

  1315. mark

  1316. bits

  1317. not

  1318. just

  1319. that

  1320. but

  1321. because

  1322. it's

  1323. all

  1324. expired

  1325. from

  1326. God

  1327. everything

  1328. it is

  1329. all

  1330. invested

  1331. with

  1332. God's

  1333. authority

  1334. and

  1335. this

  1336. conviction

  1337. Jesus

  1338. reflects

  1339. when

  1340. citing

  1341. bits

  1342. of

  1343. scripture

  1344. that are

  1345. actually

  1346. not

  1347. in

  1348. quotation

  1349. marks

  1350. even

  1351. though

  1352. it's

  1353. not

  1354. reported

  1355. speech

  1356. of

  1357. God

  1358. Jesus

  1359. says

  1360. well

  1361. just

  1362. quoting

  1363. any

  1364. bit

  1365. of

  1366. scripture

  1367. as

  1368. God

  1369. says

  1370. so

  1371. for

  1372. example

  1373. in

  1374. Matthew

  1375. 19

  1376. when

  1377. he's

  1378. taking

  1379. up

  1380. the

  1381. question

  1382. of

  1383. divorce

  1384. he

  1385. says

  1386. well

  1387. God

  1388. says

  1389. and

  1390. then

  1391. he

  1392. quotes

  1393. a little

  1394. bit

  1395. that's

  1396. actually

  1397. Moses

  1398. speaking

  1399. but

  1400. in

  1401. Jesus

  1402. mind

  1403. it's

  1404. scripture

  1405. even

  1406. though

  1407. Moses

  1408. is

  1409. saying

  1410. it

  1411. so

  1412. God

  1413. says

  1414. it

  1415. God

  1416. says

  1417. it

  1418. man

  1419. shall

  1420. leave

  1421. and

  1422. cleave

  1423. and

  1424. the

  1425. two

  1426. shall

  1427. become

  1428. one

  1429. flesh

  1430. as

  1431. God

  1432. says

  1433. it's

  1434. actually

  1435. Moses

  1436. but

  1437. God

  1438. says

  1439. it's

  1440. it's

  1441. expired

  1442. by

  1443. God

  1444. this

  1445. relation

  1446. of the

  1447. father

  1448. to

  1449. scripture

  1450. is

  1451. true

  1452. not

  1453. simply

  1454. of the

  1455. Old

  1456. Testament

  1457. prophetic

  1458. voice

  1459. but

  1460. also

  1461. of the

  1462. New

  1463. Testament

  1464. apostolic

  1465. voice

  1466. for

  1467. they

  1468. also

  1469. spoke

  1470. under

  1471. the

  1472. same

  1473. divine

  1474. inspiration

  1475. thus

  1476. their

  1477. words

  1478. too

  1479. were

  1480. and

  1481. are

  1482. the

  1483. words

  1484. of

  1485. the

  1486. father

  1487. as

  1488. the

  1489. apostle

  1490. told

  1491. the

  1492. Thessalonians

  1493. this is

  1494. 1st

  1495. Thessalonians

  1496. 2

  1497. 13

  1498. we

  1499. thank

  1500. God

  1501. that

  1502. when

  1503. you

  1504. receive

  1505. from

  1506. us

  1507. the

  1508. words

  1509. of

  1510. God's

  1511. message

  1512. you

  1513. accepted

  1514. it

  1515. not

  1516. as

  1517. the

  1518. words

  1519. of

  1520. men

  1521. in

  1522. other

  1523. words

  1524. not

  1525. merely

  1526. as

  1527. the

  1528. words

  1529. of

  1530. men

  1531. but

  1532. for

  1533. what

  1534. it

  1535. really

  1536. is

  1537. the

  1538. very

  1539. words

  1540. of

  1541. God

  1542. that

  1543. is

  1544. the

  1545. apostolic

  1546. speech

  1547. as

  1548. recorded

  1549. in

  1550. the

  1551. scriptures

  1552. are

  1553. not

  1554. merely

  1555. the

  1556. words

  1557. of

  1558. men

  1559. but

  1560. the

  1561. very

  1562. words

  1563. of

  1564. God

  1565. 1st

  1566. Thess

  1567. 2

  1568. 13

  1569. so

  1570. that

  1571. on

  1572. the

  1573. involvement

  1574. of

  1575. the

  1576. father

  1577. it's

  1578. very

  1579. intimate

  1580. involvement

  1581. what

  1582. what

  1583. about

  1584. the

  1585. involvement

  1586. of

  1587. the

  1588. spirit

  1589. in

  1590. the

  1591. scriptures

  1592. 2

  1593. Peter

  1594. 1

  1595. 21

  1596. reminds

  1597. us

  1598. of

  1599. the

  1600. remark

  1601. of

  1602. 2

  1603. Timothy

  1604. 3

  1605. 16

  1606. about

  1607. all

  1608. scripture

  1609. being

  1610. inspired

  1611. but

  1612. here

  1613. 2

  1614. Peter

  1615. 1

  1616. 21

  1617. focuses

  1618. on

  1619. the

  1620. relation

  1621. of

  1622. the

  1623. spirit

  1624. to

  1625. scripture

  1626. so

  1627. 2

  1628. Timothy

  1629. talks

  1630. about

  1631. God

  1632. expired

  1633. but

  1634. in

  1635. the

  1636. 2

  1637. Peter

  1638. passage

  1639. we

  1640. will

  1641. look

  1642. at

  1643. it's

  1644. the

  1645. spirit

  1646. effecting

  1647. effecting

  1648. it

  1649. Peter

  1650. writes

  1651. for

  1652. no

  1653. prophecy

  1654. of

  1655. scripture

  1656. he's

  1657. talking

  1658. about

  1659. scriptural

  1660. prophecy

  1661. no

  1662. prophecy

  1663. of

  1664. scripture

  1665. was

  1666. ever

  1667. made

  1668. by

  1669. an

  1670. act

  1671. of

  1672. the

  1673. human

  1674. will

  1675. but

  1676. men

  1677. moved

  1678. by the

  1679. Holy

  1680. Spirit

  1681. spoke

  1682. from

  1683. God

  1684. so

  1685. notice

  1686. the

  1687. Holy

  1688. Spirit

  1689. as

  1690. the

  1691. agent

  1692. the

  1693. instigator

  1694. and

  1695. every

  1696. once in

  1697. a while

  1698. you'll

  1699. encounter

  1700. some

  1701. regarding

  1702. either

  1703. implicitly

  1704. or maybe

  1705. even

  1706. explicitly

  1707. that

  1708. the

  1709. explicit

  1710. words

  1711. of

  1712. Jesus

  1713. somehow

  1714. in their

  1715. mind

  1716. possess

  1717. greater

  1718. authority

  1719. than the

  1720. rest of

  1721. scripture

  1722. you

  1723. know

  1724. all

  1725. that's

  1726. all

  1727. very

  1728. well

  1729. and

  1730. good

  1731. but

  1732. that's

  1733. Paul

  1734. or

  1735. that's

  1736. the

  1737. Old

  1738. Testament

  1739. but

  1740. what

  1741. does

  1742. Jesus

  1743. say

  1744. about

  1745. this

  1746. matter

  1747. I don't

  1748. know if

  1749. you've

  1750. ever

  1751. encountered

  1752. that

  1753. objection

  1754. as if

  1755. somehow

  1756. kind of

  1757. the

  1758. red

  1759. print

  1760. stuff

  1761. takes

  1762. on

  1763. greater

  1764. authority

  1765. you know

  1766. it's

  1767. from

  1768. the

  1769. horse's

  1770. mouth

  1771. and

  1772. somehow

  1773. makes

  1774. the

  1775. requirement

  1776. for

  1777. greater

  1778. clout

  1779. you know

  1780. give me

  1781. something

  1782. dominical

  1783. something

  1784. that

  1785. Jesus

  1786. said

  1787. but

1788. But this distinction that we often hear is completely scuttled by an appreciation that Jesus' words are divine precisely because they are spirit-inspired.

1789. Jesus' prophethood was a spiritual gift, a gift of the spirit.

1790. It was the spirit's anointing that made his words God's.

1791. As he said in the synagogue at the opening of his ministry, remember Jesus cites Isaiah 61.1.

1792. The spirit of the Lord is upon me and appointed me to preach.

  1793. This is Luke 4.18.

1794. So Jesus' speech is God's speech because it is the Holy Spirit's speech.

1795. Because he was the spirit-anointed son.

1796. And John 3.34 makes this point.

1797. For he whom God has sent, speaking of Jesus, utters the words of God for, okay, it's giving an explanation, for, or reason.

1798. For he gives him the spirit without measure.

  1799. Do you see that?

1800. Because of the involvement of the Holy Spirit, Jesus' words are divine words.

1801. Therefore, despite Jesus' uniqueness, his words are no more divine than those of the New Testament apostles or Old Testament prophets,

1802. whose words were also uttered under the Spirit's mediation and agency.

1803. Just as Jesus asserted in what we just crafted it.

1804. As David said, through the Holy Spirit or by the Holy Spirit.

1805. He talks about that again and again and again.

1806. So, what this does, it keeps the words in red.

1807. If you have a red print Bible, keeps the words from red from superseding those in black.

1808. There is no difference in terms of their authority.

1809. Because of inspiration and the involvement of the Spirit.

1810. And just as the Holy Spirit conceived, anointed, and mediated the words Jesus spoke.

1811. So, the Holy Spirit carried on this work in Jesus' absence in the words of the apostles.

1812. And this was Jesus' own promise to them.

  1813. He writes,

1814. These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you.

1815. But, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,

1816. he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

  1817. It's John 14, 25 and 26.

1818. Or again, I have, Jesus speaking,

1819. I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot hear them now.

1820. But, when he, the Spirit of truth comes,

1821. he will guide you into all the truth.

1822. For he will not speak on his own initiative,

1823. but whatever he hears, hears me,

  1824. he will speak.

1825. He shall take what is mine and disclose it to you.

  1826. John 16, 12 through 15.

1827. So, as with the Word of God made flesh,

  1828. Jesus,

1829. so with the Word of God made words,

  1830. the Scripture,

1831. both are the work of the Holy Spirit.

1832. So, the great work of the Holy Spirit,

  1833. the incarnation,

1834. this is the Word of God made flesh,

  1835. and also,

  1836. in Scripturation,

1837. the Word of God made words.

1838. So, both the work of the Holy Spirit.

  1839. When he conceived,

1840. when the Spirit conceived Jesus in Mary's womb,

1841. she was, by the Spirit,

  1842. the Word-bearer,

  1843. logotakos,

  1844. the theologians say.

  1845. Her human body

  1846. introduced God's eternal Word

  1847. into the human world.

  1848. And likewise,

1849. the prophets and the apostles

  1850. are word-bearers.

  1851. Logotakoi.

  1852. Word-bearers, just like Mary.

  1853. Okay?

1854. And introduce God's eternal Word

  1855. into human words.

  1856. So,

  1857. we're saying the Spirit-conceived Son

  1858. is analogous,

  1859. at this point,

1860. to the Spirit-conceived speech acts.

  1861. And incidentally,

  1862. just as Jesus

  1863. bore the marks

  1864. of his human bearer,

  1865. he's probably,

1866. hey, you look just like Mary.

1867. Oh, that did Joseph to you?

  1868. Well, not Joseph, sorry.

  1869. Just like Mary.

1870. You look just like Mary.

  1871. Okay?

  1872. So, God's words

  1873. bear marks

  1874. of their human authors.

  1875. The apostles' personality,

  1876. diction,

  1877. idiom.

1878. You can kind of tell the difference

  1879. between Peter, Paul,

1880. and even the author of Hebrews.

  1881. So,

  1882. bear the marks.

  1883. Jesus in the Bible,

1884. no less human for being divine.

  1885. You know,

1886. you've got the hypostatic union,

1887. no less divine for being human.

1888. And you've got the verbal union,

  1889. the words of God

1890. in the words of people,

1891. no less divine for being human.

  1892. Analogous in that respect.

1893. So, that on the spirit.

  1894. Well, let's finally consider

  1895. what is the involvement

  1896. of the Son,

  1897. God the Son,

  1898. Jesus,

  1899. in the scriptures.

  1900. First,

  1901. it's worth pausing

  1902. to notice that

  1903. with the incarnation

  1904. of the Son,

  1905. we have God's logos

  1906. introduced into

  1907. speaking humanity.

  1908. That means

  1909. the divine logos,

  1910. the second person

  1911. of the Trinity,

  1912. and wordly humanity

  1913. can and do

  1914. co-inhere.

  1915. They can come together.

  1916. None of this,

  1917. well, that's too transcendent

  1918. and our human language

  1919. is too imminent,

  1920. so the transcendent

  1921. can never connect

  1922. with the imminent.

  1923. No!

  1924. The incarnation does that.

  1925. That's exactly

  1926. what it does.

  1927. As an aside,

  1928. this means,

  1929. for one,

  1930. the troublesome

  1931. Kantian distinction,

  1932. you know,

  1933. for those of you

  1934. that do a philosophy

  1935. between the noumenal

  1936. and the phenomenal,

  1937. those two realms,

  1938. boy,

1939. these two can't come together.

  1940. You know,

1941. there's ever going to be

  1942. an inseparable bridge.

  1943. We can never,

  1944. you know,

  1945. from the phenomenon,

  1946. have any sort of

  1947. noumenal sense.

  1948. That dissolves

  1949. forever

  1950. with the annunciation

  1951. that God

  1952. has actually

  1953. come down

  1954. into the phenomenal.

  1955. That's a huge,

  1956. huge thing.

  1957. Since Jesus

  1958. is the incarnate

  1959. Son of God,

  1960. His words

  1961. are the words

  1962. of God,

  1963. the words of God

  1964. and also the words

  1965. from God,

  1966. surely without qualification.

  1967. That is,

  1968. Jesus' words

  1969. are the words

1970. the Father gave to Him.

  1971. John 8, 28.

  1972. I do nothing,

  1973. Jesus says,

1974. I do nothing on my own

  1975. but speak just

  1976. what the Father

  1977. has taught me.

  1978. John 12, 49.

  1979. I do not speak

  1980. on my own

  1981. but the Father

  1982. who has sent me

  1983. commanded me

  1984. to say

1985. all that I have spoken.

  1986. John 17, 8.

  1987. I gave them

  1988. the words

  1989. you gave to me,

  1990. speaking to the Father.

  1991. the Father.

  1992. This implies

  1993. that

  1994. God the Son,

  1995. the word incarnate,

  1996. speaks to us

  1997. in human words,

  1998. the very words

1999. He heard the Father say

  2000. in the eternal life

  2001. of the Trinity.

  2002. But,

  2003. so that's clear enough,

  2004. but

  2005. consider

  2006. what

  2007. Jesus

  2008. so often

  2009. speaks

  2010. in His career

  2011. as those words.

  2012. Scripture.

  2013. Scripture.

  2014. Jesus

  2015. commonly

  2016. speaks

  2017. the words

  2018. of Scripture

  2019. as His

  2020. own words,

  2021. as the words

  2022. the Father

  2023. gave Him

  2024. to speak.

  2025. You know,

  2026. again,

  2027. you think of

  2028. the temptation

  2029. in the desert

  2030. as just one example.

  2031. quote Scripture,

  2032. takes them

  2033. as His words.

  2034. And it is

  2035. noteworthy

  2036. that when

  2037. Jesus

  2038. quotes Scripture,

  2039. He does it

  2040. as

  2041. canon,

  2042. okay,

  2043. in virtue

  2044. of it being

  2045. Scripture.

  2046. He doesn't

  2047. quote

  2048. as if

  2049. selectively

  2050. appropriating

  2051. a bit here

  2052. or a bit there,

  2053. which might

  2054. happen to

  2055. reflect

  2056. His perspective.

  2057. Kind of like

  2058. some speaker

  2059. might rummage

  2060. through a book

  2061. of quotes

  2062. to see if

  2063. he can find

  2064. one that

  2065. he can use.

  2066. No!

  2067. He takes

  2068. it upon

  2069. His lips

  2070. as Scripture.

  2071. Because it's

  2072. Scripture,

  2073. He takes it

  2074. on His lips

  2075. and appropriates

  2076. it.

  2077. No,

  2078. the rummaging

  2079. around in the

  2080. little,

  2081. you know,

  2082. fortune cookie

  2083. sayings

  2084. or whatever.

  2085. That's

  2086. precisely the

  2087. way the

  2088. devil uses

  2089. Scripture

  2090. and used

  2091. Scripture

  2092. to try

  2093. to tempt

  2094. Jesus

  2095. to do

  2096. so in

  2097. the same

  2098. way Himself,

  2099. but He

  2100. would not.

  2101. There is

  2102. no indication,

  2103. no indication

  2104. of Jesus

  2105. favoring

  2106. some

  2107. scriptural

  2108. words over

  2109. others.

  2110. Just as

  2111. Scripture says,

  2112. as Scripture

  2113. says,

  2114. as Scripture

  2115. says.

  2116. On the

  2117. contrary,

  2118. one lives

  2119. by,

  2120. as He

  2121. put it

  2122. back in

  2123. Satan's

  2124. face,

  2125. one lives

  2126. by every

  2127. word,

  2128. every word,

  2129. Matthew 4.4,

  2130. that comes

  2131. from the

  2132. mouth of

  2133. God.

  2134. Not a

  2135. single stroke

  2136. accepted,

  2137. Matthew 5.18.

  2138. So,

  2139. how then

  2140. can the

  2141. biblical passages

  2142. that He

  2143. does not

  2144. quote be

  2145. any less

  2146. true revelation?

  2147. If what He

  2148. does quote,

  2149. He just

  2150. quotes as

  2151. Scripture

  2152. and because

  2153. it's

  2154. Scripture.

  2155. Thus,

  2156. we see

  2157. Jesus'

  2158. endorsement.

  2159. His

  2160. taking

  2161. Scripture

  2162. words

  2163. as His

  2164. own

  2165. affirms

  2166. those

  2167. Scripture

  2168. words

  2169. as

  2170. divine.

  2171. But,

  2172. really,

  2173. the interplay

  2174. of Jesus

  2175. and Scripture

  2176. runs both

  2177. ways,

  2178. does it

  2179. not?

  2180. There is

  2181. a reciprocal

  2182. authorization.

  2183. Oh,

  2184. the weave

  2185. is so rich

  2186. and thick

  2187. here.

  2188. not only

  2189. does Jesus

  2190. point back

  2191. to the words

  2192. of the

  2193. prophets

  2194. and say

  2195. in effect,

  2196. these are

  2197. my words

  2198. too,

  2199. but

  2200. the prophetic

  2201. words

  2202. pointed also

  2203. to Him

  2204. and authorized

  2205. Him.

  2206. It was

  2207. the Scriptures

  2208. that formed

  2209. the Christ.

  2210. The Scriptures

  2211. defined

  2212. His vocation

  2213. as Messiah.

  2214. They

  2215. constituted

  2216. Him.

  2217. They

  2218. marked

  2219. out

  2220. His

  2221. path

  2222. of

  2223. faithfulness.

  2224. As He

  2225. would say

  2226. again and

  2227. again,

  2228. no,

  2229. no,

  2230. the Scriptures

  2231. must be

  2232. fulfilled.

  2233. I must

  2234. do this.

  2235. The Scriptures

  2236. form me.

  2237. They shape

  2238. me.

  2239. Scripture

  2240. was His

  2241. master

  2242. and He

  2243. its pupil.

  2244. He rendered

  2245. it obedience.

  2246. It was

  2247. there

  2248. that He

  2249. listened

  2250. to the

  2251. voice of

  2252. the Father.

  2253. Thus,

  2254. the written

  2255. Word

  2256. formed

  2257. the

  2258. incarnate

  2259. Word.

  2260. The

  2261. life that

  2262. was truly

  2263. divine

  2264. was the

  2265. life that

  2266. fulfilled

  2267. the Scripture.

  2268. This is

  2269. the relation

  2270. of reciprocal

  2271. authorization.

  2272. In

  2273. obeying

  2274. Scripture,

  2275. Christ is

  2276. revealed as

  2277. more than

  2278. its servant.

  2279. He is

  2280. the very

  2281. Lord of

  2282. Scripture.

  2283. And Scripture

  2284. reveals that

  2285. and confirms

  2286. Him as

  2287. that.

  2288. So He's

  2289. able to

  2290. declare all

  2291. food

  2292. clean.

  2293. And so

  2294. He

  2295. transforms

  2296. Scripture

  2297. by rendering

  2298. it intelligible.

  2299. It's all

  2300. about me.

  2301. Luke 24,

  2302. Road to

  2303. Emmaus.

  2304. He renders

  2305. it intelligible,

  2306. renewing and

  2307. reprobligating

  2308. it.

  2309. We also

  2310. see an

  2311. expansion of

  2312. these divine

  2313. words becoming

  2314. human words.

  2315. As Jesus

  2316. prayed to the

  2317. Father in His

  2318. high priestly

  2319. prayer,

  2320. John 17,

  2321. I gave

  2322. them,

  2323. speaking of

  2324. the apostles,

  2325. I gave

  2326. them the

  2327. words you

  2328. gave to

  2329. me,

  2330. verse 8.

  2331. Then He

  2332. goes on to

  2333. pray for

  2334. those who

  2335. will believe

  2336. in me

  2337. through their

  2338. the apostles'

  2339. message.

  2340. So we

  2341. have the

  2342. words the

  2343. Father gave

  2344. to the

  2345. Son being

  2346. passed on

  2347. by the

  2348. incarnate

  2349. Son in

  2350. ordinary human

  2351. language to

  2352. His disciples.

  2353. apostles.

  2354. And now

  2355. these words

  2356. are passed

  2357. on by the

  2358. apostles to

  2359. those who

  2360. did not hear

  2361. the Father's

  2362. words from

  2363. Jesus'

  2364. mouth.

  2365. Thereby we,

  2366. at a distance

  2367. in time and

  2368. space,

  2369. may encounter

  2370. the words

  2371. the Father

  2372. and Christ

  2373. who in

  2374. those words

  2375. of the

  2376. apostles

  2377. present

  2378. themselves to

  2379. us as a

  2380. covenant-making

  2381. God and

  2382. His words

  2383. to us.

  2384. We see this

  2385. pattern in

  2386. the sending

  2387. out of the

  2388. twelve.

  2389. Remember

  2390. Matthew 10.

  2391. If anyone

  2392. will not

  2393. welcome you,

  2394. is apostles

  2395. giving these

  2396. words,

  2397. if anyone

  2398. will not

  2399. welcome you

  2400. or listen

  2401. to your

  2402. words,

  2403. shake the

  2404. dust of

  2405. your feet

  2406. off.

  2407. It will

  2408. be more

  2409. bearable for

  2410. Sodom and

  2411. Gomorrah.

  2412. Anyone who

  2413. welcomes you

  2414. welcomes me

  2415. and anyone

  2416. who welcomes

  2417. me welcomes

  2418. the one who

  2419. sent me,

  2420. the Father.

  2421. Thus,

  2422. to reject

  2423. the apostles'

  2424. words,

  2425. which come

  2426. from Christ,

  2427. is to

  2428. reject God.

  2429. God has

  2430. identified

  2431. himself

  2432. both

  2433. with Christ

  2434. in person

  2435. and with

  2436. the passing

  2437. on by his

  2438. apostles of

  2439. the words of

  2440. Jesus.

  2441. with the

  2442. result that

  2443. to reject

  2444. the words

  2445. of the

  2446. apostles

  2447. is to

  2448. reject

  2449. God.

  2450. So,

  2451. this is

  2452. what we

  2453. have called

  2454. the

  2455. Trinitarian

  2456. ontology

  2457. of Scripture.

  2458. Do you get

  2459. a sense of

  2460. what I mean

  2461. by that now?

  2462. The deep,

  2463. profound

  2464. involvement of

  2465. every person

  2466. of the

  2467. Trinity

  2468. in the

  2469. Scriptures

  2470. themselves.

  2471. Do you

  2472. feel that?

  2473. Do you

  2474. see that?

  2475. The

  2476. Trinity

  2477. is so

  2478. profoundly

  2479. involved

  2480. in the

  2481. being of

  2482. Scripture

  2483. that the

  2484. character of

  2485. Scripture

  2486. is invested

  2487. with the

  2488. divine

  2489. character.

  2490. That is,

  2491. the Trinity

  2492. is so

  2493. profoundly

  2494. involved in

  2495. the being

  2496. of Scripture

  2497. that the

  2498. character of

  2499. Scripture

  2500. is invested

  2501. with divine

  2502. character.

  2503. The Trinity

  2504. is the

  2505. three-fold

  2506. cord,

  2507. this

  2508. intertwined

  2509. involvement.

  2510. And these,

  2511. it strikes

  2512. me,

  2513. are solid

  2514. grounds

  2515. for

  2516. maintaining

  2517. Scripture's

  2518. authority.

  2519. So finally,

  2520. just a few

  2521. seconds on

  2522. so what.

  2523. Well,

  2524. if this

  2525. is so,

  2526. how should

  2527. we then

  2528. live?

  2529. Well,

  2530. God's

  2531. Word,

  2532. the Scriptures

  2533. must

  2534. find

  2535. functioned

  2536. as

  2537. authority

  2538. in our

  2539. lives.

  2540. Four,

  2541. the

  2542. authority

  2543. of Scripture

  2544. is simply

  2545. shorthand

  2546. for the

  2547. authority

  2548. of God

  2549. exercised

  2550. through Scripture.

  2551. Okay,

  2552. this is the

  2553. one phrase

  2554. takeaway.

  2555. The authority

  2556. of Scripture

  2557. is simply

  2558. shorthand

  2559. for the

  2560. authority

  2561. of God

  2562. exercised

  2563. through Scripture.

  2564. So we

  2565. must never

  2566. place

  2567. ourselves

  2568. over it

  2569. in judgment.

  2570. Reminds me

  2571. when I was

  2572. in the Louvre

  2573. some time

  2574. ago,

  2575. there was

  2576. a,

  2577. a,

  2578. a,

  2579. a,

  2580. a,

  2581. a,

  2582. a,

  2583. a,

  2584. a,

  2585. a,

  2586. a,

  2587. a,

  2588. a,

  2589. a,

  2590. a,

  2591. a,

  2592. a,

  2593. a,

  2594. a,

  2595. a,

  2596. a,

  2597. a,

  2598. a,

  2599. a,

  2600. a,

  2601. a,

  2602. a,

  2603. a,

  2604. a,

  2605. a,

  2606. a,

  2607. a,

  2608. a,

  2609. a,

  2610. a,

  2611. a,

  2612. and he's

  2613. sitting there

  2614. just kind

  2615. of looking

  2616. at the

  2617. pictures

  2618. and,

  2619. you know,

  2620. he's kind

  2621. of looking

  2622. at this

  2623. thing

  2624. and kind

  2625. of wincing

  2626. and,

  2627. you know,

  2628. he's in

  2629. Mona Lisa

  2630. and that

  2631. and kind

  2632. of looking

  2633. that

  2634. and just

  2635. shaking his

  2636. head,

  2637. overrated,

  2638. overrated,

  2639. going forward

  2640. to the next.

  2641. At one point,

  2642. this very

  2643. elegant

  2644. and kind

  2645. of demure

  2646. guard

  2647. that was there

  2648. kind of leaned

  2649. over and said,

  2650. monsieur,

  2651. in this

  2652. museum,

  2653. it is not

  2654. the artwork

  2655. that is under judgment.

2656. In other words, you just judge yourself as a Philistine

  2657. by not approving that.

2658. Look, when it comes to scripture,

2659. it's not the scripture that's under judgment.

  2660. It's us.

2661. Just like it says that the cross was not,

2662. in one sense, that was the judgment of the world,

  2663. it says in 1 Corinthians 7.

2664. When Jesus was judged by the world

2665. and hung on the cross in judgment of him,

2666. that judgment of him was the judgment of the world.

2667. That judged them to be false,

2668. to be out of touch with reality,

2669. to be on the wrong side of everything.

2670. And it's the same way with the word.

2671. It's the same way with scripture.

  2672. It must judge us.

2673. James writes in James 1.21,

2674. in humility, receive the word.

2675. In humility, receive the word.

2676. Which works for our salvation.

2677. That we receive the word

2678. shows that we are being saved.

2679. That there is a saving work that is going on in us.

2680. Or why don't we end with this?

  2681. Isaiah 66.2.

2682. But to this one I will look,

2683. to him who is humble and of contrite spirit,

2684. who trembles at my word.

2685. Who trembles at my word.

  2686. Tremble.

2687. We need to respond to God's word

2688. exactly as we would to God himself.

  2689. In trembling awe.

  2690. In reverential, urgent submission.
