  1. Good morning, church.

  2. The past several weeks we've been going through the Gospel of Mark,

  3. and today we've come to a short account of Jesus healing a man

  4. with a terrible disease called leprosy.

  5. It can be found in Mark chapter 1, verses 40 through 45,

    Mark 1:40–45

  6. on page 786 of your Pew Bible.

  7. In the sermon this morning, we're going to go through this account

  8. verse by verse, examining the leper's life, his background,

  9. his condition, and as much of his circumstances as we can figure out.

  10. All these things will help us to see how Jesus lovingly ministers

  11. to this man with leprosy.

  12. And then through Jesus' great love, we will also see how God ministers

  13. to us and how he wants us to minister to others.

  14. So let's turn to our passage.

  15. We're in Mark chapter 1, verse 40.

    Mark 1:40

  16. Mark has just told us that Jesus has been preaching in the synagogues

  17. of Galilee, announcing the Gospel, the good news of the Kingdom of God,

  18. and calling people to repent.

  19. And then verse 40 reads like this.

  20. And a leper came to him, imploring him and kneeling, said to him,

  21. if you will, you can make me clean.

  22. Our account begins with Jesus somewhere in Galilee,

  23. and a leper, a man with a disease called leprosy,

  24. he comes to Jesus and he implores him.

  25. And he kneels down and he says, if you will, you can make me clean.

  26. Now, though we have only been barely introduced to this man,

  27. we can actually figure out a lot about this man's life and background.

  28. And if we spend a little time getting to know this man and his circumstances,

  29. we will better understand the amazing thing that Jesus will do next.

  30. So let's start with the basics.

  31. Mark has told us that this man was a leper.

  32. This means he had the deadly skin disease called leprosy.

  33. Leprosy, as many of you know, causes sores and bumps all over a leper's body.

  34. And these can progress step by step, sometimes for many years.

  35. Lepers often slowly lose feeling in their arms and legs.

  36. They experience muscle weakness.

  37. Leprosy can lead to great disfigurement, especially of the face.

  38. It can cause blindness, loss of hands and feet.

  39. And eventually, it can cause death.

  40. And in the ancient world, lepers were everywhere.

  41. This is why leprosy is mentioned throughout the Bible.

  42. And not only was leprosy present in the ancient world,

  43. until recently it was present throughout much of the modern world.

  44. In fact, it still exists here and there.

  45. But perhaps what made leprosy even worse was that it was contagious.

  46. You could catch it from someone else who had leprosy.

  47. In our day, we can treat leprosy, but in the ancient world, it was untreatable.

  48. And the fact that leprosy was contagious meant that the best way to avoid getting leprosy

  49. was to avoid contact with lepers.

  50. And so in the ancient world, this combination of carrying a deadly disease

  51. and carrying a deadly disease that was contagious

  52. and carrying a deadly, contagious disease that could horribly disfigure a person,

  53. all this meant that lepers were outcasts and exiles.

  54. People did not want to be around them because they were so difficult to look at

  55. and because people worried about contracting a fatal disease.

  56. So if we put all this together, we can understand a little bit about this man

  57. who has come to Jesus, and we can imagine how he's been suffering physically,

  58. and we can guess how he's been treated by others.

  59. Now, this is all the Gospel of Mark tells us about this man,

  60. but we can learn a little more about him by looking at the Gospel of Luke.

  61. Luke, chapter 5, verse 12, records the same account of Jesus and this man with leprosy,

    Luke 5:12

  62. but Luke adds a detail.

  63. He says that the man did not just have leprosy, but that he was, quote,

  64. full of leprosy.

  65. This means that the man was covered with leprosy.

  66. It means that he had probably been suffering from leprosy for a long time.

  67. He probably had it for many years.

  68. It means that he was perhaps greatly disfigured in his hands and face.

  69. It means he may have been near death.

  70. And this man comes to Jesus, and he kneels before him, and he implores him for mercy.

  71. What will our Lord Jesus do?

  72. Will he heal this poor man who has suffered so much?

  73. Will he heal this man who is imploring him for mercy?

  74. This is a famous story, and some of you know what Jesus is going to do.

  75. But before we go on to the next verse, I just want to pause,

  76. because I think that we can tell even more about this man,

  77. and thereby appreciate Jesus even more, too.

  78. One of the wonderful things about the Bible is that one passage in Scripture

  79. often has much to do with another passage in Scripture.

  80. And it turns out that much of how Jesus will interact with this man

  81. in the Gospel of Mark is informed by the rules and regulations

  82. concerning leprosy that are given in the book of Leviticus.

  83. And so, to fully understand what Jesus is about to do for this man,

  84. we need to fully understand the account in Leviticus,

  85. which tells of how to treat someone with leprosy.

  86. This passage in the book of Leviticus is part of the Mosaic Law.

  87. This is the law that was given by God to Moses more than 1,000 years before Jesus.

  88. And it describes what to do with someone who's suspected of having leprosy.

  89. This account can be found in Leviticus chapter 13,

    Leviticus 13 chapter mention

  90. and I believe on page 84 of your pew Bibles.

  91. And though this is a long passage, we're only going to read a handful of verses.

  92. And while we're turning to Leviticus, let's join together in prayer.

  93. And ask God to guide us as we read his word and seek to understand.

  94. Join with me.

  95. We thank you, Father, maker of heaven and earth,

  96. that though you spun the stars into existence,

  97. you saw fit to give us your word in a book

  98. that we may hold in our hands,

  99. from which we can learn so much of you.

  100. This morning we are reading about how your son Jesus interacted with a man suffering from leprosy.

  101. And we ask that you would illuminate us through your word.

  102. Guide us as we read.

  103. Give us understanding about what Moses wrote of leprosy

  104. and about how your son Jesus ministered to a man with leprosy

  105. and about what this means for us and for our church.

  106. In all of this, Lord, convict us where we fall short.

  107. Restore us where we have repented.

  108. Help us to know your care and love for us

  109. and help us to have that same care and love for others.

  110. Amen.

  111. All right, let's turn to Leviticus chapter 13.

    Leviticus 13 chapter mention

  112. As I said, we're reading this passage

  113. because it will tell us much about how Jesus interacted with this man who had leprosy.

  114. And this passage in Leviticus is part of the laws that were given to Moses by God

  115. more than a thousand years before Jesus.

  116. And this is one of those passages that at first might seem like a long list of irrelevant rules.

  117. But don't be intimidated by chapters like these in your Bible.

  118. God inspired every word and every letter of Scripture

  119. and he put every passage in the Bible for a reason.

  120. And with this passage, though it might appear at first like a long list

  121. of hard-to-understand rules, there's something wonderful going on in it,

  122. something which lies hidden at first.

  123. And not only that, there are things in there that will help us to appreciate

  124. even more what Jesus is about to do with the man who has leprosy.

  125. So here we go.

  126. Chapter 13, verse 1.

  127. The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

  128. When a person has on the skin of his body a swelling or an eruption or a spot,

  129. and it turns into a case of leprous disease on the skin of his body,

  130. then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priest,

  131. and the priest shall examine the diseased area on the skin of his body.

  132. And if the hair in the diseased area has turned white

  133. and the disease appears to be deeper than the skin of his body,

  134. it is a case of leprous disease.

  135. When the priest has examined him, he shall pronounce him unclean.

  136. But if the spot is white on the skin of his body and appears no deeper than the skin,

  137. and the hair in it has not turned white,

  138. the priest shall shut up the diseased person for seven days,

  139. and the priest shall examine him on the seventh day.

  140. And if in his eyes the disease is checked and the disease has not spread in the skin,

  141. then the priest shall shut him up for another seven days,

  142. and the priest shall examine him again on the seventh day.

  143. And if the diseased area has faded and the disease has not spread in the skin,

  144. then the priest shall pronounce him clean.

  145. It is only an eruption, and he shall wash his clothes and be clean.

  146. But if the eruption spreads in the skin after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing,

  147. he shall appear again before the priest, and the priest shall look.

  148. And if the eruption has spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean.

  149. It is a leprous disease.

  150. So let's sum up this passage.

  151. In the nation of Israel, if someone was suspected of having leprosy,

  152. they were to be examined by a priest.

  153. And God gave the priest several symptoms to look for,

  154. and depending on the symptoms, the suspected leper could be categorized as clean,

  155. which means they didn't have leprosy,

  156. or unclean, which means they might have leprosy.

  157. There was also a third intermediate stage of quarantine for a seven-day cycle.

  158. And after being quarantined for seven days,

  159. someone who might have leprosy would then be checked by the priest again and declared clean or unclean,

  160. or they could be sent off to quarantine for another seven days,

  161. and the process would repeat itself until the person was declared clean or unclean.

  162. And if someone ever was declared clean and the skin ailments spread,

  163. then they had to go back to the priest for the process to begin anew.

  164. Now, this passage goes on for some time,

  165. giving further specifications about all sorts of skin ailments,

  166. instructions on examining the kinds of sores present on people,

  167. the proper disposal of certain contaminated garments,

  168. and how to wash contaminated garments.

  169. It should be known, too, that some of the Hebrew vocabulary items mentioned in the passage

  170. are difficult to translate,

  171. and they probably indicate a broader or a different categorization of disease and symptoms

  172. than we typically have today.

  173. But the end result for someone with a skin disease was this.

  174. Eventually, the person would either be declared clean or unclean.

  175. And Leviticus goes on to say if they were declared unclean,

  176. they were forbidden from entering the camp of the people of Israel.

  177. They were forbidden from living amongst villages and towns and cities,

  178. and they were forbidden from living with other healthy people.

  179. In fact, they had to visibly indicate that they had been declared unclean

  180. by tearing their clothes and letting their hair hang loose

  181. and by covering their mouth and by loudly proclaiming that they were unclean

  182. so that people would know to avoid them.

  183. The same chapter of Leviticus, chapter 13, verse 45, concludes with this.

    Leviticus 13:45

  184. The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes

  185. and let the hair of his head hang loose,

  186. and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out,

  187. Unclean, unclean!

  188. He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease.

  189. He is unclean.

  190. He shall live alone.

  191. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.

  192. Thus, the person with leprosy was to be totally separated from all other people.

  193. They could not interact with anyone,

  194. and they were supposed to cry unclean to warn other people not to come near them.

  195. So serious were these regulations that several books later in the Bible,

  196. in Deuteronomy, chapter 24, verse 8,

    Deuteronomy 24:8

  197. The Israelites are again instructed to carefully observe all the ordinances

  198. that God taught them about leprosy.

  199. Deuteronomy reads,

  200. Take care in a case of leprous disease to be very careful

  201. to do according to all that the Levitical priests shall direct you,

  202. as I commanded them,

  203. so you shall be careful to do.

  204. Friends, it scarcely needs to be said that this process of quarantining those

  205. who have a contagious disease is all too familiar to us

  206. who've lived through the coronavirus pandemic.

  207. And it goes without saying that being quarantined is difficult and hard.

  208. And if the quarantine lasts for some time,

  209. it can be an awful, isolating experience.

  210. We know also that covering our faces when we interact with others

  211. can be very difficult, too.

  212. But now imagine how difficult the quarantine would be

  213. if you had leprosy in the ancient world,

  214. and your quarantine lasted for years and years,

  215. and every month you grew slowly worse and worse,

  216. and every month you grew more lonely

  217. with no one to help you,

  218. and every day you knew that your death was coming.

  219. These laws about leprosy

  220. that God gave through Moses were a drastic measure,

  221. but in a society which could not treat leprosy,

  222. the only other option was to let many more people suffer.

  223. And so God, in his good judgment and in his compassion,

  224. instructed the Israelites to enforce a strict quarantine for leprosy,

  225. which would mean that a small number of people would suffer

  226. instead of a great number.

  227. But there's also something else going on in this passage.

  228. It turns out that this quarantine for leprosy,

  229. which God stipulated,

  230. is actually the first example

  231. of a medical quarantine in human history.

  232. It would be hundreds, if not thousands of years

  233. before science progressed enough to understand how diseases spread.

  234. So these laws about leprosy,

  235. though they were very strict,

  236. they also show God's compassion.

  237. Compassion.

  238. They appear to demonstrate God mercifully

  239. and amazingly and miraculously,

  240. providing medical foreknowledge to the people of God.

  241. And there are actually many other examples like this

  242. in Moses' laws,

  243. laws that dictate sanitary procedures

  244. like the proper disposal of human waste,

  245. washing before eating,

  246. using soap,

  247. laws of sexual purity,

  248. all of which demonstrate remarkable medicinal foresight,

  249. and all of which demonstrate God's deep compassion for his people.

  250. So even in this list of rules for leprosy

  251. that at first might seem so harsh,

  252. we actually see God's wonderful

  253. and even miraculous compassion for his people.

  254. But let's return to that man with leprosy

  255. who came to Jesus in Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  256. We've already seen how the man was full of leprosy,

  257. how he likely had the disease for many years,

  258. how he was probably greatly disfigured

  259. and how his death may not be far off.

  260. But now with the help of Leviticus,

  261. we know some other things about the man.

  262. We know that several or perhaps many years previously,

  263. this man would have noticed that he had a skin disease

  264. and he would have been brought to a priest

  265. and examined for this skin condition.

  266. And then likely after several weeks of quarantine,

  267. several weeks of worrying about his fate,

  268. he would have been deemed unclean

  269. and then he would have been cast out of his village

  270. and probably cast out of his family.

  271. The Old Testament commandments were intended by God

  272. to be implemented with love,

  273. but we know that the Israelites often did the opposite.

  274. So this man, after being cast out of his village,

  275. he may have endured years of people scorning him,

  276. years of abandonment or ridicule,

  277. stereotyping, stigmatization.

  278. I think you can be sure that when this man came to Jesus,

  279. he was lonely and in despair

  280. and with few friends and little family.

  281. And all this suffering we know

  282. would have probably ended in this man's death.

  283. And this man comes to Jesus

  284. and he kneels before Jesus

  285. and he implores Jesus.

  286. He says, Lord, if you will,

  287. you can make me clean.

  288. And now Leviticus has taught us something else

  289. about this passage.

  290. The laws of leprosy in Leviticus

  291. say that this man was not supposed to come near to Jesus.

  292. He was supposed to be isolated.

  293. He was supposed to run away.

  294. He was supposed to cover his mouth

  295. and tear his clothes

  296. and yell, unclean, unclean.

  297. This man had a deadly contagious disease

  298. and in violation of the law,

  299. he comes near to Jesus and exposes Jesus.

  300. What will Jesus do?

  301. Will he rebuke him?

  302. Instead, our Jesus does something amazing.

  303. We read in verses 41 and 42,

  304. Moved with pity,

  305. he stretched out his hand

  306. and he touched him.

  307. And he said to him,

  308. I will be clean.

  309. And immediately the leprosy left him

  310. and he was made clean.

  311. Notice carefully what Jesus does here.

  312. It's easy to miss.

  313. Jesus does, of course,

  314. miraculously cleanse the man.

  315. That's easy to see.

  316. But before all that,

  317. Jesus does the last thing

  318. that many of us would want to do.

  319. He stretches out his hand

  320. and he touches the leper.

  321. Jesus' first instinct

  322. when seeing this man with leprosy

  323. is to touch him.

  324. His first action

  325. is to touch this man

  326. who had a fatal

  327. and contagious disease

  328. that spread by contact

  329. and Jesus touches him.

  330. The only way to avoid getting leprosy

  331. is to avoid contact with lepers.

  332. And Jesus touches this leper.

  333. According to the Levitical law,

  334. part of which we read,

  335. this made Jesus unclean.

  336. But Jesus touches the man still.

  337. He put his hand on the leper.

  338. He put his hand on a man

  339. who may not have felt human touch for years.

  340. Jesus looks at this man

  341. and he knows him.

  342. He knows that his struggles

  343. are more than just a physical disease.

  344. He knows the man has been isolated for years

  345. and likely rejected by friends and family.

  346. And Jesus sees his despair

  347. and he draws near to him.

  348. Jesus' first action

  349. is to attend to this man's

  350. inner spiritual state.

  351. And Jesus risks his own life to do this.

  352. He could have simply said a word from afar

  353. to cure him like he does many other times,

  354. but he doesn't.

  355. Jesus touches the man

  356. so that he might touch the man's heart also.

  357. And Jesus risks much to do this.

  358. Jesus himself

  359. now might be considered unclean by others.

  360. He himself risks becoming a leper.

  361. He himself might face scorn.

  362. He himself might face isolation and rejection

  363. and disease

  364. and death.

  365. But Jesus saw the suffering of this man

  366. and shared his suffering.

  367. And he reached out and touched this man's heart.

  368. And this is all

  369. aside from the fact

  370. that he miraculously cleansed him from leprosy.

  371. Friends, I wonder,

  372. have you ever felt the touch of Jesus?

  373. We may not have leprosy,

  374. but we all are like this man.

  375. We all are unclean before Jesus.

  376. We all are like lepers in his sight.

  377. But he draws near to us still.

  378. Jesus proclaimed,

  379. those who are healthy

  380. have no need of a doctor.

  381. I have not come to call the righteous,

  382. but sinners to repentance.

  383. Friends, are you caught

  384. in the uncleanness of your sins?

  385. Are you enslaved by them

  386. with no way out?

  387. Are you unclean before God?

  388. Are you in despair or alone

  389. without friends or family?

  390. Are you in darkness?

  391. If so, have you gone to Jesus

  392. like this leper?

  393. Have you fallen on your face

  394. and said,

  395. Lord, if you are willing,

  396. you can make me clean?

  397. I remember

  398. when 20 years ago

  399. Jesus reached out his hand

  400. and touched me

  401. when I was wandering

  402. in darkness and despair.

  403. When all of a sudden

  404. the light of the world,

  405. Jesus, came near

  406. and he reached out

  407. and took hold of me

  408. and he cleansed me of my sins

  409. and he poured the love of God

  410. into my heart.

  411. Friends, if you have not yet

  412. gone to Jesus,

  413. if you have not yet asked him

  414. with a humble heart

  415. to make you clean,

  416. then I invite you

  417. to do so today

  418. and he will cleanse you

  419. like he cleansed this man.

  420. And church,

  421. if you've already been cleansed

  422. by Jesus,

  423. are you now turning

  424. to cleanse and love others

  425. like Jesus has done for you?

  426. Are you like Jesus,

  427. drawing near to those

  428. who are unclean?

  429. Are you reaching out to them?

  430. In our society today,

  431. we do not have many lepers,

  432. but we have many people

  433. who are unclean in our sight.

  434. Sometimes it is those

  435. who look different

  436. or act different.

  437. Sometimes it is family

  438. or friends

  439. who annoy or hurt us.

  440. It could be colleagues

  441. or lab mates

  442. or roommates

  443. who make our life

  444. more challenging.

  445. It might be those

  446. who have a different

  447. political preference.

  448. It might be your difficult neighbor,

  449. your unreasonable boss,

  450. your subordinates at work,

  451. your extended family,

  452. or anyone else

  453. from the homeless man

  454. on the street

  455. to the politician

  456. in his mansion.

  457. Whoever is unclean

  458. in your sight,

  459. are you loving them

  460. like Jesus does?

  461. Do you draw near to them?

  462. Do you reach out

  463. your hand to them?

  464. Do you reach out

  465. to touch their heart?

  466. So, friends,

  467. gathering all these

  468. things together,

  469. we see that with just a word

  470. and just a touch,

  471. our Lord Jesus

  472. not only touched

  473. this leper physically,

  474. he also touched his heart.

  475. And by this,

  476. he gives us an example

  477. that we are to follow.

  478. But Jesus isn't done yet

  479. ministering to this man.

  480. Let's continue reading.

  481. Mark goes on to say

  482. in verse 43 and 44,

  483. And Jesus sternly charged him

  484. and sent him away at once.

  485. He said to him,

  486. See that you say nothing

  487. to anyone,

  488. but go,

  489. show yourself to the priest

  490. and offer for your cleansing

  491. what Moses commanded

  492. for a proof to them.

  493. We've seen this before

  494. with Jesus.

  495. He doesn't want people bragging

  496. about the miraculous

  497. physical healing.

  498. Jesus isn't the carnival

  499. come to town.

  500. He's not a traveling road show.

  501. He doesn't want gawkers gathering.

  502. The point of his ministry

  503. is not physical healing,

  504. though that happens

  505. in abundance.

  506. Jesus is about

  507. the deeper issues

  508. of the heart.

  509. He is about

  510. the forgiveness of sins

  511. and the reconciliation

  512. of men and women

  513. to God.

  514. So he tells the man

  515. not to go around

  516. telling everyone

  517. what happened.

  518. Instead,

  519. he instructs him

  520. to go to the priest

  521. and offer for his cleansing

  522. what Moses commanded.

  523. And Jesus does this

  524. for two reasons.

  525. First,

  526. he draws the man's attention

  527. to the word of God

  528. and he exhorts him

  529. to follow it.

  530. The Mosaic law

  531. had not yet been fulfilled

  532. by Jesus,

  533. and so Jesus calls the man

  534. to remember

  535. the very chapter

  536. we read in Leviticus

  537. and to do what was commanded

  538. by Moses,

  539. that if someone was cleansed

  540. of his skin disease,

  541. then they were to offer

  542. a sacrifice at the temple

  543. for their cleansing.

  544. In doing this,

  545. Jesus reminds the man

  546. of what Moses wrote.

  547. He turns the man's attention

  548. to the word of God.

  549. Jesus shows the man

  550. how to properly interpret

  551. and apply the word of God

  552. to his life.

  553. But there's a second reason

  554. that Jesus instructs the man

  555. to go to the priest.

  556. Jesus had already attended

  557. to this man's physical needs

  558. by healing him.

  559. He had already attended

  560. to this man's deeper

  561. emotional despair

  562. by drawing near

  563. and stretching out his hand

  564. and touching him.

  565. He's already given him

  566. spiritual guidance

  567. by exhorting him

  568. to obey the scriptures.

  569. And now,

  570. by telling the man

  571. to go and see a priest,

  572. he is looking out

  573. for this man's restoration

  574. and reintegration

  575. with the people of God.

  576. Jesus knows that this man

  577. has been cut off

  578. from the people of God

  579. for years.

  580. He knows that even

  581. after this miraculous

  582. encounter with Jesus,

  583. people will still think

  584. of the man as unclean

  585. unless a priest

  586. has declared him able

  587. to reenter Jewish society

  588. as the chapter we read

  589. in Leviticus instructs.

  590. So Jesus tells him

  591. to follow the Mosaic Law

  592. so that he might be restored

  593. to his family,

  594. to his friends,

  595. and to his hometown.

  596. Jesus is the good doctor.

  597. He is the great physician.

  598. He is the healer

  599. of our souls.

  600. He cares not just

  601. for the body,

  602. but for our soul,

  603. our mind,

  604. our spirit,

  605. and even for our

  606. spiritual community.

  607. And with Jesus,

  608. he models for us

  609. how we are called

  610. to love others.

  611. Notice that for Jesus,

  612. exhorting someone

  613. to submit to the word of God

  614. on the one hand,

  615. and then attending

  616. to that person's physical

  617. and emotional needs

  618. on the other,

  619. are both required

  620. when it comes

  621. to loving your neighbor.

  622. Sometimes we Christians

  623. choose one or the other.

  624. Sometimes we think

  625. that loving our neighbor

  626. means only speaking

  627. hard truths from Scripture.

  628. And sometimes we think

  629. that loving our neighbor

  630. only means attending

  631. to our neighbor's

  632. perceived physical

  633. and emotional needs.

  634. But Jesus,

  635. the great physician,

  636. he shows

  637. that to love our neighbor

  638. means to do

  639. all those things together.

  640. It means to exhort others

  641. to attend to God's word,

  642. to exhort others

  643. to submit themselves to it,

  644. and to repent of their sins

  645. before God.

  646. It also means

  647. to serve others,

  648. to attend to their

  649. physical needs,

  650. to touch their hearts,

  651. to help integrate them

  652. into a spiritual community,

  653. and to do all these things,

  654. even at great personal cost.

  655. And Jesus does this

  656. all throughout

  657. the Gospel of Mark,

  658. beginning at the very

  659. commencement of Jesus' ministry,

  660. in Mark 115,

  661. where Jesus' central message

  662. is that all people

  663. should repent of their sins.

  664. And then,

  665. while Jesus is preaching

  666. this message,

  667. we see all throughout

  668. the Gospel of Mark

  669. account after account

  670. of Jesus' healings

  671. and acts of service

  672. and love

  673. continuing right up

  674. to where he goes

  675. to the cross for us.

  676. Christians,

  677. I ask now

  678. what I asked before.

  679. Are you loving others

  680. like Jesus loves them?

  681. Are you loving others

  682. like Jesus loves you?

  683. Do you point others

  684. to the truth of God's word?

  685. Do you serve others'

  686. physical needs?

  687. Do you care for others'

  688. emotions?

  689. Do you help the lonely

  690. to find a community?

  691. Do you ever risk

  692. or sacrifice for others

  693. like Jesus has done for you?

  694. Jesus has left a model

  695. that we should follow.

  696. He says in the Gospel of John,

  697. for I have given you

  698. an example

  699. that you also should do

  700. just as I have done to you.

  701. And Jesus did all these things

  702. when he ministered

  703. to this man with leprosy.

  704. I should say

  705. that loving others

  706. like Jesus does

  707. is hard to do

  708. and we need

  709. the grace of God

  710. to help us.

  711. We cannot do it alone.

  712. So,

  713. if you are intimidated

  714. by these things,

  715. cast yourself on Jesus

  716. and he will help you.

  717. He will lift you up

  718. and as you go forth

  719. to preach the Gospel

  720. and to humbly love,

  721. there is something else

  722. you should know.

  723. The final verse

  724. in our passage today

  725. shows that there is

  726. something else

  727. about loving others

  728. that makes it

  729. very challenging

  730. and of which Scripture

  731. wants you to be aware.

  732. After Jesus tells the man

  733. not to speak openly

  734. about this miracle,

  735. we read in verse 45,

  736. but he went out

  737. and began to talk

  738. freely about it

  739. and to spread the news

  740. so that Jesus

  741. could no longer

  742. openly enter a town

  743. but was out

  744. in desolate places

  745. and people were coming

  746. to him

  747. from every quarter.

  748. After all Jesus did

  749. for this man,

  750. after all Jesus risked

  751. and after all the love

  752. with which he loved

  753. this man,

  754. then the man

  755. did not obey Jesus.

  756. And this resulted

  757. in Jesus not being able

  758. to preach the good news

  759. in the cities and towns

  760. like he once did.

  761. Friends,

  762. this is perhaps

  763. the hardest thing

  764. about loving others.

  765. Sometimes they don't listen.

  766. In fact,

  767. Scripture promises

  768. that a lot of times

  769. they won't.

  770. But Christian,

  771. if you're discouraged

  772. in your walk

  773. and in your service

  774. with Christ,

  775. if you're tired

  776. of being rejected

  777. or misinterpreted,

  778. if you've not seen fruit

  779. for many years,

  780. then take heart.

  781. What you have experienced,

  782. Jesus experienced,

  783. and your fellow saints

  784. experience.

  785. So keep your eyes

  786. on Jesus.

  787. Watch him

  788. in the Gospel of Mark.

  789. Be encouraged

  790. by his perseverance.

  791. Don't be surprised

  792. when things don't turn out

  793. the way you hoped.

  794. After all,

  795. that's why we need

  796. a Savior.

  797. This is why

  798. we can't save ourselves

  799. and this is why

  800. we can't save others.

  801. Be assured

  802. that the kingdom of God

  803. will not fail.

  804. It will continue to grow.

  805. Sometimes we don't know how,

  806. but God is faithful

  807. and he has promised

  808. in this very passage,

  809. after this man

  810. disobeys Jesus,

  811. meaning that Jesus

  812. could no longer

  813. preach openly in towns,

  814. people still come to Jesus

  815. from every quarter

  816. and he keeps right on preaching

  817. for the Gospel

  818. will not be restrained.

  819. So watch Jesus

  820. in the Gospel of Mark.

  821. In difficulty after difficulty,

  822. he continues to minister.

  823. He keeps right on serving.

  824. He even is betrayed by Judas,

  825. abandoned by his disciples.

  826. He even goes to the cross

  827. and to his death,

  828. but then he goes

  829. to his resurrection

  830. and then to the heavens

  831. where he sits at the right hand

  832. of the throne of God.

  833. If you're discouraged,

  834. be faithful

  835. and cast yourself on Jesus

  836. and he will help you.

  837. Share your burdens

  838. with your fellow Christians.

  839. Get involved

  840. in ministry here at Trinity.

  841. Link arms

  842. and fellowship with others

  843. and Christ will lift you up.

  844. And if you find yourself now

  845. like you are

  846. not much like this disobedient leper,

  847. if you've been cleansed by Jesus

  848. but have stumbled on the way,

  849. if you have fallen into sin,

  850. remember that Christ

  851. is still your Savior

  852. and we are still your brethren

  853. and turn to Jesus

  854. for life again.

  855. And if you're sitting here

  856. this morning

  857. and you do not know Jesus,

  858. go to him today.

  859. Fall before him

  860. and say,

  861. Lord,

  862. if you are willing,

  863. you can make me clean

  864. and he will reach out to you

  865. and touch you

  866. just like he did

  867. for this leper.

  868. Let's pray together.

  869. together.

  870. Oh, Lord,

  871. we just read

  872. of your miraculous compassion

  873. with that man with leprosy

  874. and, Lord,

  875. we confess

  876. that we are all unclean

  877. before you

  878. and we ask that

  879. you would reach out your hand

  880. and touch our hearts

  881. and cleanse us.

  882. Lord,

  883. not only physically

  884. but also cleanse our despair

  885. and our loneliness

  886. and all that darkness

  887. we may have

  888. and give us that light

  889. of life

  890. that only comes from you,

  891. the light of the world.

  892. Lift up our faces

  893. to see you, God.

  894. Help us to submit ourselves

  895. to your word

  896. and to obey it

  897. and to put it into practice.

  898. Help us to repent

  899. where we fall

  900. and to forgive others

  901. and to help others

  902. carry their burdens,

  903. to love them

  904. like you love them.

  905. And we pray this

  906. in your mighty name,

  907. Lord Jesus.

  908. Amen.
