  1. Ladies and gentlemen, will make the notice certisons a fist right here and it will be

  2. now in fireworks and a good Feeling, is it supposed to take Sharp, its finalelapse?

  3. All day.

  4. All day.

  5. We'll get started in just a minute.

  6. A New York minute?

  7. An island minute.

  8. A Connecticut minute.

  9. Whatever that is.

  10. Yeah, Brent knows Connecticut minutes, yes.

  11. We don't want to start early, but we'll probably start.

  12. Yeah, he'll come probably.

  13. Yeah, I think so.

  14. Okay.

  15. Welcome back, everyone.

  16. It's good to be here again.

  17. For those of you who don't know me, my name's Tom Schmidt.

  18. And I've been here a few times talking to you about the reliability of the New Testament.

  19. It's kind of a sub-series within our greater series on Scripture.

  20. And a couple weeks ago when I was with you, we talked about the preservation of the New Testament.

  21. And we looked at how the New Testament has been preserved and passed down to us through the generations.

  22. And how this is done carefully and reliably.

  23. And then the next time I was with you, we talked about the canonicity of the New Testament.

  24. And we looked at how the New Testament books were put together.

  25. Who chose what books were in the Bible?

  26. Why are some books in the New Testament, some books not in the New Testament?

  27. We talked about whether there was some kind of conspiracy theory or something like that.

  28. And we saw how God reliably and superintended this whole process to preserve and pass down the New Testament to us.

  29. Today, we're going to talk about the accuracy of the New Testament.

  30. And we're going to see if what the New Testament says is true.

  31. So we know it might have been reliably preserved.

  32. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it contains true things.

  33. So we're going to look at that in our time together this morning.

  34. We'll investigate whether what the New Testament says about Jesus is true and why its claims are factual.

  35. And this pertains especially to the New Testament's central claim that Jesus was crucified, buried, and then resurrected.

  36. So those are some things we'll go over today.

  37. But first, I want to open in a word of prayer.

  38. Father in heaven, we thank you for how you have given your word to us, how you've preserved it and gathered it for us through your saints.

  39. Father, we also thank you for how your word is trustworthy and how you sent your son Jesus to rescue us from our sins.

  40. It's in his mighty name that we pray.

  41. Amen.

  42. All right.

  43. So to begin with, I want to ask a question.

  44. Can we trust that the New Testament is accurate and true?

  45. We sometimes hear accusations that the New Testament is based on myths and folktales, that it's inaccurate and deceptive.

  46. I've heard these claims many times before, sometimes in popular culture, sometimes in the classroom.

  47. I'm sure some of you have heard these claims as well.

  48. And today, what we're going to look at is that the New Testament is not based on rumors or lies or myths.

  49. And indeed, there are several reasons why we can trust its factual claims.

  50. Now, these reasons, they build on one another.

  51. And so we're going to start with perhaps one of the most foundational reasons and then go from there.

  52. So one reason that we can trust that the New Testament is true and accurate is first and foremost because it's based off of eyewitness testimony.

  53. It's not based off of rumor and report or hearsay.

  54. And these eyewitnesses were behind the documents of the New Testament.

  55. And they were in a position to know what Jesus said and did and to report it accurately.

  56. So, for example, John, the disciple of Jesus, says this about Jesus, whom he calls the word of life.

  57. He says,

  58. John tells us here that he's preaching not something that he just heard a rumor about,

  59. but something that he witnessed, that he saw with his eyes, that he touched with his hands, that he heard directly with his own ears.

  60. And Peter, another disciple of Jesus, he tells us the same thing.

  61. For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  62. But we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

  63. Peter says that in his second epistle.

  64. He says much the same thing in his first epistle.

  65. In chapter 5, verse 1, he also adds that he was an eyewitness of the sufferings of Christ.

  66. And other New Testament authors make similar claims.

  67. For instance, Luke, the gospel writer.

  68. He says,

  69. It seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning,

  70. to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus,

  71. so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

  72. Theophilus was the person to whom Luke wrote, and Luke tells him that he went to the eyewitnesses,

  73. he investigated everything carefully from the beginning,

  74. so that he, Theophilus, and you all may know the exact truth about what you have been taught.

  75. So we've heard from the Apostle John and the Apostle Peter and Luke the evangelist,

  76. but we have more testimony as well.

  77. We have the testimony from the Apostle Paul.

  78. He gives perhaps the earliest account of the resurrection of Jesus.

  79. He says this,

  80. For I delivered to you as a first importance what I also received,

  81. that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,

  82. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

  83. and that he appeared to Cephas, that's Peter, then to the Twelve.

  84. Then he appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time,

  85. most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.

  86. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

  87. The resurrection of Jesus is the essence of our faith,

  88. and Paul gives his own eyewitness testimony here.

  89. And indeed, the Twelve disciples, the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, they concur.

  90. They say in the book of Acts, chapter 2, verse 32,

    Acts 2:32

  91. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.

  92. The fact that the New Testament is based on eyewitness testimony is so well established

  93. that even ancient anti-Christian sources agree.

  94. Now, what do I mean by these ancient anti-Christian sources?

  95. These sources were ancient writers who attacked Christianity in the 2nd through 4th centuries.

  96. They were people like Celsus, Porphyry, Heracles, and Julian the Apostate.

  97. They were highly educated, powerful, extremely hostile to Christianity.

  98. But even when they were attacking the New Testament,

  99. they still attributed its writings to Jesus' disciples.

  100. These ancient skeptics did not believe that the New Testament documents

  101. were written under false names far after the time of Jesus

  102. and were hence based on rumors like some scholars try to maintain today.

  103. They acknowledged that it was the disciples who wrote them.

  104. So if such ancient hostile sources agree

  105. that the disciples were ultimately behind the New Testament documents,

  106. then I think we can safely conclude that the New Testament documents

  107. are not based off of rumor or hearsay.

  108. But I want to ask you something more.

  109. Even if we can be sure that the New Testament is based on eyewitness testimony,

  110. how can we be sure that the eyewitnesses were telling the truth?

  111. We all know that eyewitnesses can lie.

  112. So do we have good reason to think that these eyewitnesses are being truthful

  113. and not fabricating their claims?

  114. Well, we have several reasons to trust the claims of these eyewitnesses.

  115. Firstly, they did not have worldly motives to lie about the resurrection of Jesus.

  116. They did not gain materially from their claims.

  117. They did not gain money or fame.

  118. They did not gain power or earthly benefit

  119. by preaching that Jesus was the Son of God and was resurrected.

  120. Not only does the New Testament testify to this,

  121. but even those ancient critics of Christianity I mentioned before,

  122. like Celsus and Julian the Apostate,

  123. even they agree with this.

  124. In fact, if you read their writings,

  125. they mock the apostles for being poor and uneducated,

  126. for being members of the lower class

  127. and friends with slaves and minority groups.

  128. They knew that the apostles did not gain riches or political power

  129. for following Jesus.

  130. They knew they were impoverished and they mocked them for it.

  131. In fact, far from seeking material gain for their beliefs,

  132. the apostles and the authors of the New Testament,

  133. they knowingly risked persecution and humiliation

  134. and scorn and shame and death.

  135. Indeed, many of the disciples of Jesus were executed for their faith in Jesus

  136. or even tortured.

  137. And when the authorities warned them to stop preaching in the name of Jesus

  138. and threaten them with punishment,

  139. they said this in the book of Acts,

  140. we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.

  141. Despite all these threats,

  142. they continued to proclaim that Jesus was resurrected.

  143. And just look at the outcome of their lives.

  144. Peter was executed.

  145. Paul executed.

  146. John was exiled as a prisoner to the island of Patmos.

  147. James, his brother, was beheaded.

  148. Matthew executed.

  149. Thaddeus, Nathaniel, James, the brother of Jesus,

  150. they were all executed.

  151. And we have good historical data to support these outcomes.

  152. And more than this,

  153. we have evidence that many other early Christians suffered the same fate.

  154. The fact that the apostles were terribly persecuted for their belief in the resurrection of Jesus

  155. is so beyond question that, again, as I've said before,

  156. even non-Christian sources agree with this.

  157. They tell us that the apostles were persecuted and executed.

  158. Sometimes they brag about it.

  159. We see this in, for example, the Jewish Talmud, the Jewish historian Josephus.

  160. They both claim that Matthew, that Thaddeus, that Nathaniel and James were executed.

  161. Josephus talks about James and the Jewish Talmud talks about the rest.

  162. Another Jewish document, the Toldot Yeshu,

  163. describes how Jesus was executed,

  164. that his 12 disciples then spread his teaching among the nations,

  165. and that, quote,

  166. they were slain.

  167. And it even criticizes Peter for teaching, quote,

  168. the meek acceptance of suffering.

  169. And the Roman historian Tacitus,

  170. he tells of a persecution of Christians in Rome under Emperor Nero

  171. that sounds exactly like the circumstances under which Peter was executed.

  172. But despite such great persecution,

  173. the apostles and eyewitnesses,

  174. they continued to maintain that Jesus really was resurrected.

  175. These sufferings are not something that so many people would each be likely to endure

  176. for a claim they knew that was a lie.

  177. Instead,

  178. it seems far more likely that the apostles were simply being honest and sincere.

  179. So,

  180. the first reason we can trust the eyewitnesses

  181. is because they don't seem to have worldly motives to lie.

  182. They gained nothing from what they were saying.

  183. And secondly,

  184. they had everything to lose.

  185. They were persecuted for what they said,

  186. yet they preached and continued to preach it.

  187. And this trustworthy character of the apostles,

  188. it was so steadfast that they passed it on down to their own disciples.

  189. Just like Jesus,

  190. the apostles went on to have disciples of their own.

  191. And when we examine the character of these men,

  192. these followers of the apostles,

  193. we see that they also conducted themselves in the same way as Jesus and the apostles did.

  194. They also suffered and were martyred for faith in Jesus.

  195. Take,

  196. for example,

  197. Ignatius of Antioch and Polycarp of Smyrna.

  198. Both were disciples of the apostles.

  199. Both have writings that remain for us to read.

  200. And both of them were executed for their faith in Jesus.

  201. In fact,

  202. let's look at Ignatius specifically.

  203. He was a disciple of Peter,

  204. perhaps also Paul.

  205. And while he was awaiting his execution for being a Christian,

  206. he wrote several letters to churches encouraging them.

  207. And in one letter,

  208. he talks about how Peter witnessed the resurrected Jesus.

  209. Here's what he says.

  210. For Jesus suffered all these things for our sakes in order that we might be saved.

  211. And he truly suffered just as he truly raised himself,

  212. not as unbelievers say.

  213. For I know and believe that he was in the flesh even after the resurrection.

  214. When he came to Peter and those with him,

  215. and he said,

  216. Take hold of me,

  217. handle me,

  218. and see that I am not a disembodied spirit.

  219. And immediately they touched him and believed,

  220. being closely united with his flesh and blood.

  221. For this reason,

  222. they too despised death.

  223. Indeed,

  224. they proved to be greater than death.

  225. And after his resurrection,

  226. he ate and drank with them,

  227. like one who is composed of flesh,

  228. though spiritually he was united with the Father.

  229. Here Ignatius,

  230. the disciple of Peter,

  231. proclaims the resurrection of Jesus.

  232. He says that he knows Jesus appeared to Peter.

  233. And for this reason,

  234. Peter and the apostles despised death.

  235. Why?

  236. Because they had seen the one who had conquered death,

  237. and they knew death had power over them no longer.

  238. And Ignatius,

  239. though a man condemned to die,

  240. he joyfully testifies to this,

  241. just as Peter testified to him.

  242. So let me summarize.

  243. Can we trust that the New Testament is accurate and true?

  244. Well,

  245. yes,

  246. we can.

  247. It's based on eyewitness testimony of the apostles,

  248. not on rumor and report.

  249. And these eyewitnesses are trustworthy,

  250. because they did not stand to gain anything materially from their claims.

  251. They did not have motives to lie about the resurrection.

  252. Rather,

  253. they risked persecution and death.

  254. And in fact,

  255. their own disciples went on to do the very same thing.

  256. And these points are so beyond question,

  257. that even ancient non-Christian sources admit to many of them.

  258. Well,

  259. so far,

  260. I've been talking about how the New Testament writers were in a position to know the facts about Jesus,

  261. and how the New Testament documents were written with a backing of eyewitness testimony.

  262. And I've also shown how we can trust that these eyewitnesses were not lying about what they were saying.

  263. But let's not stop here.

  264. Let's see if we can test the reliability of the eyewitnesses in other ways.

  265. Let's not just trust their character or motives.

  266. Let's see if we can test their truthfulness and accuracy a little more scientifically.

  267. After all,

  268. eyewitnesses might still have accidentally put in false information.

  269. They might have gotten carried away in their great passion.

  270. They might have exaggerated things or convinced themselves of something that wasn't actually true.

  271. Even if the eyewitnesses were sincere,

  272. they might have still been inaccurate.

  273. We all know honest people who make wrong statements.

  274. So let's do a more thorough investigation here.

  275. Let's forget about character and motives.

  276. Let's see if the New Testament can hold up to good,

  277. old-fashioned, brass tacks, nuts and bolts, historical scrutiny.

  278. And this is what we're going to do.

  279. Throughout the New Testament, the authors make numerous historical claims.

  280. And we can check these claims against the historical record to see if they're true.

  281. So when the New Testament mentions a person or a place or an event,

  282. we can check that claim against the historical record to see if the New Testament is accurate.

  283. This is just like in a detective case when the testimony of an eyewitness is checked against the facts

  284. to see if their testimony can be corroborated by the evidence.

  285. And when we subject the New Testament writers to historical scrutiny,

  286. we find that the New Testament authors were indeed accurate

  287. and they were not in the habit of making up information.

  288. Let me show you what I mean.

  289. We'll start with some easy, basic stuff,

  290. and then we'll get to more complicated stuff as we go.

  291. So first of all, the New Testament authors report the existence of several Roman emperors.

  292. And we know from various historical sources

  293. that they correctly identify them in their proper historical context.

  294. And this comes from various lines of evidence like historical reports,

  295. the archaeological record, coins, things like that.

  296. You can see a coin of Emperor Augustus on the screen, which Luke talks about.

  297. Emperor Tiberius is also mentioned by Luke.

  298. There he is.

  299. Emperor Claudius mentioned in the book of Acts.

  300. Herod the Great mentioned in the early part of the Gospel of Matthew.

  301. He's the guy who tried to kill baby Jesus.

  302. Herod Archelaus is also mentioned in Matthew.

  303. Herod Philip, Herod Antipas, Herod Agrippa, Herod Agrippa II.

  304. There's a lot of Herods.

  305. It's hard to get them all straight, but the New Testament does.

  306. And we could go on for other rulers like Arathos IV.

  307. Paul mentions him.

  308. Pontius Pilate.

  309. This is a famous Pontius Pilate stone.

  310. And I know it might be difficult for you to read it,

  311. but on here it says the name Teos Pilatus.

  312. It's missing the P-O-N.

  313. It's missing from the stone.

  314. But anyway, all scholars agree this is an inscription mentioning Pontius Pilate from his time frame.

  315. Yes.

  316. Very quickly, is that like the back of a seat in a theater?

  317. Oh, I don't know where the stone comes from.

  318. I'd have to check, and we may not actually know.

  319. I'd have to see if we know the provenance of it.

  320. When I was in Israel, when we were like in Caesarea by the seat or something like that,

  321. the tour guide pointed to a seat, you know, and they had their names on it.

  322. They were VIP seats.

  323. At that time, I think in 1999, he claimed that this was the first archaeological evidence

  324. because the seat had a righteous name.

  325. So all I know is it's called the Pilate stone.

  326. It is in Israel.

  327. So this is in Israel.

  328. I don't know if that's part of a back of a chair or not,

  329. but we also have lots of other evidence for Pontius Pilate.

  330. It's not just this stone.

  331. He's mentioned in many historical ancient sources outside of the Bible.

  332. Right, he's saying the only part.

  333. Okay, yes, yes, yes.

  334. But if we're honest here, these names that I've been talking about,

  335. they're a little easy to get right.

  336. It's like naming the correct presidents.

  337. It's not too hard to get those right.

  338. So let's do something a little more challenging.

  339. It's good that the New Testament get these folks right,

  340. but let's see what the New Testament authors do with lesser-known figures

  341. whom someone would likely only know about if they were well-informed.

  342. Well, the New Testament authors speak about many people like Bernice,

  343. Drusilla, Judas the Galilean, Festus,

  344. people even like James the brother of Jesus, John the Baptist,

  345. Caiaphas the high priest, Herodias, and her daughter Salome,

  346. and the list goes on.

  347. And when we check the historical record,

  348. we see that all of these folks are mentioned outside of the Bible

  349. by non-Christian sources,

  350. and that the New Testament correctly places every one of them

  351. in their proper historical context.

  352. The New Testament is even correct about a minor person named Erastus,

  353. Paul's fellow partner from Corinth.

  354. And if you go to Corinth today,

  355. you can still see his name emblazoned on one of the paving stones.

  356. Erastus seems to have been one of the ministers of public works.

  357. And I know it might be hard to see,

  358. but the beginning of the E is there,

  359. R-A-S-T-U-S.

  360. The U looks like a V.

  361. Erastus.

  362. How do we know that's the Erastus that Paul would refer to?

  363. Erastus mentions him as a Corinthian minister of,

  364. I think,

  365. of public works,

  366. or maybe of some kind of official.

  367. And we know that when this name was put down,

  368. that that's what the public officials who were responsible for laying these things

  369. and arranging it would put their names on.

  370. So the place matches,

  371. the name matches,

  372. the profession matches,

  373. and the time matches.

  374. A person in the ancient world wouldn't likely know about these things

  375. unless they were actually there

  376. and witnessed many of these people.

  377. And we can even go to the names in the New Testament

  378. of humble peasants and workers.

  379. Even they can be verified.

  380. Now, they can't be verified on an individual basis,

  381. but it turns out that,

  382. but they can be verified statistically.

  383. And let me tell you what I mean.

  384. It turns out that every generation and every location

  385. has a frequency rate in their choice of names.

  386. So when people have children,

  387. they choose certain names,

  388. and every generation has a frequency rate.

  389. So for instance,

  390. in the United States,

  391. 100 years ago,

  392. Betty,

  393. Sally,

  394. those were popular names.

  395. Not so popular these days.

  396. We have different names that children tend to have.

  397. And you can line up these statistics,

  398. figure out what names are popular,

  399. look at the frequency rate.

  400. And some scholars have done this

  401. with ancient names from first century Israel.

  402. And they have found

  403. that the frequency rate of those names

  404. matches up with the New Testament's reports

  405. of a lot of Marys

  406. and a lot of Simons.

  407. If you read the New Testament,

  408. you're like,

  409. everybody's named Mary.

  410. Everybody's named Simon.

  411. Well, that's exactly what was going on

  412. in first century Palestine.

  413. And so even those names

  414. can be roughly corroborated.

  415. Now we can also test

  416. the accuracy of the eyewitnesses

  417. in other ways too,

  418. aside from references to people.

  419. We can examine geographic references

  420. in the New Testament.

  421. This map shows dozens of locations

  422. mentioned in the New Testament.

  423. And guess what?

  424. The New Testament correctly locates all of them.

  425. It's even correct about little towns

  426. near and around Jerusalem,

  427. like Arimathea and Bethlehem.

  428. And it's also correct about villages in Galilee,

  429. even tiny fishing villages

  430. around the Sea of Galilee,

  431. like Capernaum.

  432. Remember back then,

  433. folks didn't have maps or atlases

  434. or the internet or encyclopedias

  435. to look up little places like this.

  436. The only way to know about

  437. an insignificant fishing village

  438. was if you were actually there

  439. or you knew someone who was.

  440. And the New Testament gets them right.

  441. And this is in great contrast

  442. to other documents we've mentioned

  443. in past courses,

  444. some of those false gospels.

  445. They will mention villages and towns

  446. that seem to have no bearing

  447. with historical reality.

  448. But let's go even smaller.

  449. The Gospel of John in chapter four

  450. mentions Jacob's well.

  451. Here it is.

  452. The Gospel of John speaks of the pool of Siloam,

  453. where Jesus tells a man to go and wash.

  454. There it is.

  455. The Gospel of John mentions huge stone water jars.

  456. Now, this is kind of strange

  457. because you think of water jars as smaller

  458. and not made out of stone,

  459. made out of clay.

  460. But these are big and made out of stone.

  461. But apparently that's not what they used to do

  462. in first century Judea,

  463. because here we go.

  464. We still have some of them.

  465. John did know what he was talking about.

  466. And we could continue doing this for hours

  467. about New Testament events, customs,

  468. contemporary beliefs,

  469. various historical phenomenon,

  470. and all sorts of other things

  471. that the New Testament reports

  472. is occurring in the first century.

  473. And you'll see that

  474. when the New Testament talks about events,

  475. we're able to historically verify them.

  476. It seems then that the authors

  477. were not in the habit of making up information.

  478. It also implies that

  479. the original New Testament documents

  480. must have been well preserved,

  481. because if later scribes were in the habit

  482. of messing about with them,

  483. then these historical claims

  484. would have tended to have been altered

  485. and therefore would have tended

  486. to not be so precise.

  487. But they are precise.

  488. Now, it must be said

  489. that there are a handful of instances

  490. where historical claims in the New Testament

  491. seem to be contradicted

  492. by what we know from other sources.

  493. And I would say that the most prominent,

  494. the most egregious example of this

  495. is with Theudis the Galilean,

  496. whom Luke mentions in the book of Acts,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  497. chapter 5.

  498. And Luke seems to clearly date this guy

  499. to before 39 AD.

  500. The problem with this

  501. is that the ancient Jewish historian Josephus,

  502. he also mentions Theudis,

  503. but he dates him several decades later.

  504. But rather than concluding

  505. that Luke and the New Testament are wrong,

  506. I would caution us to withhold judgment,

  507. given how accurate the New Testament is elsewhere.

  508. Perhaps there was a second Theudis,

  509. or perhaps Josephus himself was wrong.

  510. And in fact, we know Josephus is often wrong.

  511. Josephus actually talks about,

  512. he wrote multiple books,

  513. and he talks about the same period of time,

  514. three different times,

  515. so you can compare his own reports to one another.

  516. And he contradicts himself several times.

  517. So in fact,

  518. since the advent of modern scholarship,

  519. there's always been some historical claims

  520. in the New Testament

  521. that skeptical scholars dismissed as wrong,

  522. or made up,

  523. or otherwise fictitious.

  524. They would seize on these

  525. and argue

  526. that the New Testament authors

  527. were historically incorrect,

  528. and that they were fabricating information,

  529. and therefore untrustworthy.

  530. But time and again,

  531. later discoveries have proved

  532. the New Testament right,

  533. and the skeptical scholars wrong.

  534. Let me show you what I mean.

  535. Back in the day,

  536. certain scholars believed

  537. that Nicodemus,

  538. who came to Jesus by night

  539. in the Gospel of John,

  540. they believed that he was fabricated

  541. by the Gospel of John.

  542. Some of them claimed

  543. that John must have made up

  544. the name Nicodemus

  545. to function as an allegory,

  546. because Nicodemus

  547. literally means ruler of the people.

  548. And these skeptical scholars

  549. thought that John wanted

  550. to make a kind of greater point

  551. about how even rulers of the people

  552. were coming to Jesus,

  553. so he made up this guy named Nicodemus.

  554. Now John gives six data points

  555. about Nicodemus.

  556. He tells us that Nicodemus

  557. was a member of the ruling class,

  558. that he was a Pharisee,

  559. that he was a teacher of the law,

  560. that he was very wealthy,

  561. that he was associated with Jerusalem,

  562. and that he lived

  563. in the early first century.

  564. And certain scholars thought

  565. that this was nonsense,

  566. and that there was no Nicodemus.

  567. But then,

  568. other scholars

  569. started realizing

  570. that according to

  571. ancient Jewish literature,

  572. there was, in fact,

  573. a rich,

  574. ruling family in Jerusalem

  575. in the first century

  576. that did have Pharisees

  577. and teachers of the law

  578. as members,

  579. and do you know

  580. what name

  581. was popular

  582. for men

  583. in that family?

  584. Nicodemus.

  585. It may also be

  586. that the Jewish Babylonian Talmud

  587. mentions Nicodemus' execution

  588. as a disciple of Jesus.

  589. The Talmud seems,

  590. this is a little tentative,

  591. but the Talmud seems

  592. to use a nickname

  593. for Nicodemus,

  594. a nickname that we know

  595. is used for people

  596. with the name Nicodemus.

  597. So we can't be totally sure

  598. of that one.

  599. But in either case,

  600. no scholar can really

  601. truthfully claim

  602. that Nicodemus never existed

  603. because he seems like

  604. an entirely plausible

  605. historical person.

  606. Let me give you

  607. some more examples.

  608. In the Book of Acts,

  609. Luke tells us

  610. that there was

  611. an empire-wide famine

  612. during the reign

  613. of Emperor Claudius.

  614. For a long time,

  615. scholars dismissed this

  616. as a pious exaggeration.

  617. There was one

  618. or two local famines,

  619. but no famine gripped

  620. the whole Roman Empire

  621. during the reign

  622. of Claudius,

  623. they said.

  624. Yet archaeological excavations

  625. discovered ancient records

  626. on papyrus in Egypt

  627. documenting the annual

  628. flooding of the Nile

  629. when the Nile

  630. would irrigate farmland.

  631. Now, it's important to know

  632. that Egypt was the breadbasket

  633. of the Roman Empire.

  634. That's where they got

  635. most of their food from

  636. when the Nile

  637. would do its annual flood

  638. and irrigate all the farmland.

  639. And it would provide

  640. incredibly fertile ground

  641. for crops.

  642. Well, it turns out

  643. that during the reign

  644. of Claudius,

  645. these papyrus records

  646. document that in one year

  647. the Nile badly overflooded,

  648. which would have invariably

  649. caused the destruction

  650. of the crops of Egypt

  651. and invariably would have caused

  652. a severe famine

  653. throughout the empire.

  654. In fact, one scholar,

  655. Ken Sperber Gap,

  656. he says that the official documents

  657. found amongst the papyri in Egypt,

  658. quote,

  659. so supports Luke's count

  660. of the universal famine

  661. that the accuracy

  662. of the statement

  663. can no longer be challenged.

  664. We can keep going.

  665. The Pool of Bethesda,

  666. mentioned in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  667. John says that it had five sides,

  668. each equipped

  669. with an overhanging porch.

  670. Now, this is kind of weird.

  671. Normally, when you think of a pool,

  672. you think of four sides

  673. or you think of a circular pool.

  674. And this one is extra special

  675. because each side

  676. had like an overhanging porch.

  677. For a long while,

  678. scholars accused John

  679. of making up

  680. this piece of information

  681. because we had no

  682. archaeological record

  683. of its existence.

  684. Scholars said

  685. that the five porches

  686. were fictitiously crafted

  687. by John

  688. to represent

  689. five stratas of society

  690. or the five books of Moses

  691. or some other thing like that.

  692. But then,

  693. in 1948,

  694. archaeologists found this,

  695. a pool that scholars

  696. now admit

  697. is the Pool of Bethesda

  698. and indeed

  699. had five sides.

  700. The picture is showing

  701. one half of the pool

  702. and the archaeological

  703. reconstruction,

  704. you can see that

  705. it actually is

  706. a four-sided pool,

  707. but then it has

  708. a porch going between it,

  709. making five porches.

  710. So, four on the outside,

  711. one through the middle,

  712. just like John reported.

  713. Or,

  714. we could talk about Galio.

  715. Galio

  716. was the man

  717. to whom Paul

  718. had a trial before

  719. in the book of Acts.

  720. Scholars routinely claim

  721. that Luke's chronology

  722. in the book of Acts

  723. was, quote,

  724. hopeless and false

  725. regarding Paul's trial

  726. before Galio

  727. in Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  728. Other scholars insisted

  729. that Luke,

  730. the author,

  731. most likely placed

  732. this trial

  733. somewhere between

  734. 51 and 54 AD.

  735. But these scholars

  736. were dismissed.

  737. But then,

  738. in 1913,

  739. this inscription

  740. was found

  741. which mentions Galio

  742. and precisely dates him

  743. to 51 or 52 AD

  744. exactly as Luke claimed.

  745. Here's another one.

  746. Sergius Paulus,

  747. Acts chapter 13,

    Acts 13:7

  748. verse 7.

  749. Another guy

  750. whom Paul preached before.

  751. Scholars for many years

  752. said there was no evidence

  753. that Sergius Paulus

  754. was a proconsul in Cyprus

  755. like Luke claims

  756. in the book of Acts.

  757. But then,

  758. this inscription

  759. was discovered.

  760. And then this one.

  761. And these clearly show

  762. that a Sergius Paulus

  763. was proconsul in Cyprus

  764. sometime in the first century.

  765. Exactly like Luke claims.

  766. Skeptical scholars

  767. also accused Luke

  768. of making up the census

  769. mentioned in Luke chapter 2

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  770. when Mary and Joseph

  771. went to Bethlehem

  772. to be registered

  773. for Jesus' birth.

  774. Our historical sources

  775. tell us

  776. that the census

  777. actually happened

  778. years later.

  779. Skeptical scholars

  780. said Luke

  781. was wrong.

  782. But other scholars

  783. thought maybe

  784. there was more

  785. than one census.

  786. But they were ignored.

  787. But then we found

  788. this inscription

  789. which was shown

  790. to clearly speak

  791. about not one census

  792. but many censuses.

  793. And Luke

  794. was vindicated.

  795. The same happened

  796. with Quirinius.

  797. Skeptical scholars

  798. also said that Luke

  799. was wrong about

  800. the governorship

  801. of Quirinius

  802. in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  803. The ancient historian

  804. Josephus

  805. placed his governorship

  806. years later

  807. than Luke did.

  808. Some scholars

  809. tried to solve this

  810. by hypothesizing

  811. that perhaps Quirinius

  812. was governor

  813. more than once.

  814. But this seemed

  815. like special pleading.

  816. But then

  817. this inscription

  818. was deciphered

  819. and then this one

  820. and then this one

  821. and it showed

  822. that there was

  823. a governor

  824. in the very,

  825. very early part

  826. of the first century A.D.

  827. or the end

  828. of the first century B.C.

  829. there was a governor

  830. of Syria

  831. who did have

  832. two terms

  833. that were not consecutive

  834. and that the most

  835. likely candidate

  836. for this governor

  837. was in fact Quirinius

  838. who therefore

  839. seems to have been

  840. governor more than once.

  841. Luke was right again.

  842. And by the way

  843. that was not

  844. an uncommon thing

  845. in the ancient world.

  846. People were often

  847. being shuffled in and out.

  848. We can say

  849. the same thing

  850. about Luke's reference

  851. to Lysanius the Tetrarch

  852. in Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  853. Scholars said

  854. for many years

  855. that Luke

  856. contradicted

  857. the historical record

  858. by placing Lysanius

  859. some 50 or 60 years

  860. after he really existed.

  861. Some faithful scholars

  862. suggested that

  863. maybe there was

  864. more than one

  865. Lysanius the Tetrarch.

  866. But again,

  867. this seemed like

  868. special pleading.

  869. But then in 1912

  870. we found this inscription

  871. and it proved

  872. that there actually

  873. were two

  874. Lysanius the Tetrarchs.

  875. And Luke was right

  876. again.

  877. And once more

  878. that's not all that

  879. unusual in the ancient world.

  880. You'll have someone

  881. who's a ruler

  882. or a governor

  883. or a powerful figure

  884. and they often name

  885. their son the same name

  886. and that son often

  887. goes on

  888. or grandson goes on

  889. to do the same job.

  890. So it's not unusual

  891. to find situations

  892. like this.

  893. You can for instance

  894. see this

  895. with the Roman emperors

  896. where every single

  897. Roman emperor

  898. adopts the name

  899. Augustus or Caesar.

  900. So they all have

  901. the same names

  902. all dozens of them

  903. again and again.

  904. same thing happened

  905. in other parts

  906. of the world too.

  907. All right.

  908. These instances

  909. teach us

  910. that it is

  911. never wise

  912. to bet

  913. against the

  914. historical reliability

  915. of the authors

  916. of the New Testament.

  917. It is true

  918. that Luke

  919. and Josephus

  920. contradict one another

  921. about the dates

  922. of that guy

  923. Theutis

  924. I mentioned to you.

  925. But we may yet

  926. find evidence

  927. that Luke

  928. was right

  929. about Theutis

  930. and that Josephus

  931. was the one

  932. who was wrong

  933. or we may find

  934. that both were right

  935. and there were two

  936. figures of the same name.

  937. After all

  938. it's happened before

  939. hasn't it?

  940. But I have to say

  941. about Theutis

  942. that if it turns out

  943. that Luke

  944. is the one

  945. who's incorrect

  946. would this one

  947. minor error

  948. concerning a minor

  949. marginal figure

  950. really undermine

  951. the overall credibility

  952. of the New Testament

  953. given how historically

  954. reliable it is

  955. with its other claims

  956. especially

  957. its important claims.

  958. Indeed

  959. the historical reliability

  960. of the New Testament

  961. is so strong

  962. that

  963. by some measurements

  964. it gets better

  965. every year.

  966. Just a few years ago

  967. a ring

  968. was found

  969. inscribed

  970. with the name

  971. Pontius Pilate

  972. dating to the first century

  973. in Jerusalem

  974. and this once again

  975. supports the New Testament

  976. narrative

  977. and it once again

  978. bolsters the reliability

  979. of the New Testament.

  980. Like I say though

  981. Pontius Pilate

  982. is a well established

  983. historical figure

  984. even if we were missing

  985. the ring

  986. and the inscription

  987. I showed you

  988. he's mentioned

  989. in many historical sources

  990. other than those.

  991. And this is similar

  992. to what we saw

  993. with the preservation

  994. of the New Testament

  995. where every year

  996. every few years

  997. we make more discoveries

  998. that enhance

  999. our confidence

  1000. in the preservation

  1001. of the New Testament

  1002. the same thing

  1003. happens with the accuracy

  1004. of the New Testament

  1005. also.

  1006. Okay

  1007. so let me summarize

  1008. we can be sure

  1009. that the New Testament

  1010. is true and accurate

  1011. because it is based

  1012. off of eyewitness testimony

  1013. and those eyewitnesses

  1014. were reliable

  1015. because they don't

  1016. seem to have gained

  1017. anything

  1018. from their claims

  1019. and therefore

  1020. had no motive

  1021. to lie

  1022. in fact

  1023. they gained suffering

  1024. and persecution

  1025. because of their claim

  1026. about the resurrection

  1027. of Jesus

  1028. yet they persisted

  1029. in maintaining

  1030. that Jesus

  1031. actually was resurrected

  1032. and furthermore

  1033. their disciples

  1034. suffered the same things

  1035. and even non-Christians

1036. admit to much of this

1037. as we saw with writers

  1038. like Celsus

  1039. and Porphyry

  1040. and Julian the Apostate

  1041. and lastly

  1042. we've just seen

  1043. how we can historically

  1044. verify dozens

  1045. if not hundreds

  1046. of the claims

  1047. that the New Testament

  1048. writers make

  1049. showing that the authors

  1050. of the New Testament

1051. were not in the habit

  1052. of making up information

  1053. but were quite accurate

  1054. in their reports

  1055. and this even includes

  1056. instances

  1057. where scholars

  1058. charged the New Testament

  1059. with being wrong

  1060. and sometimes

  1061. they would maintain

  1062. these claims

  1063. for decades

  1064. or generations

  1065. but time and again

  1066. the New Testament

  1067. has been proven correct

  1068. through various

  1069. archaeological

  1070. and historical

  1071. discoveries

  1072. but let's do better

  1073. than this

  1074. all I've been doing

  1075. so far

  1076. is showing

  1077. that the New Testament

  1078. authors made

  1079. accurate claims

  1080. about mundane

  1081. normal

  1082. everyday events

  1083. and activities

  1084. but mundane evidence

1085. gives only so much reason

  1086. to believe

  1087. super mundane things

  1088. the New Testament

  1089. is right

  1090. regarding normal

  1091. natural claims

  1092. but what about

  1093. supernatural claims

  1094. we want

  1095. extraordinary evidence

  1096. for extraordinary claims

  1097. can we

  1098. I wonder

  1099. can we

  1100. corroborate

  1101. the miracles

  1102. attributed to Jesus

  1103. yes I think

  1104. we can

  1105. this is because

  1106. the miracles

  1107. of Jesus

  1108. were so

  1109. impressive

  1110. and so indisputable

  1111. so beyond doubt

  1112. that non-Christians

  1113. and even

  1114. anti-Christians

  1115. admitted

  1116. that Jesus

  1117. and his disciples

  1118. worked miracles

  1119. let me show you

  1120. what I mean

  1121. and

1122. what we're going to do here

  1123. is I'm going to

  1124. walk you through

  1125. some claims

  1126. from some

  1127. non-Christian writers

  1128. about Jesus

1129. and we're going to go

  1130. in sort of

  1131. reverse chronological order

  1132. starting with the latest

  1133. and then getting

  1134. to the earliest

  1135. so we'll start with

  1136. a document called

  1137. the Toldoth Yeshu

  1138. scholars agree

  1139. this was probably

  1140. compiled

  1141. around

  1142. 600 A.D.

  1143. it's a

  1144. Jewish account

  1145. of Jesus

  1146. however

  1147. we can track

  1148. the information

  1149. in the Toldoth Yeshu

  1150. and that information

  1151. matches up

  1152. with early

  1153. 2nd century

  1154. claims about Jesus

  1155. made by other

  1156. Jewish sources

  1157. so in other words

  1158. this document

  1159. seems to have been

  1160. compiled

  1161. around 600 A.D.

  1162. but it's compiled

  1163. from earlier traditions

  1164. and those traditions

  1165. go way way earlier

  1166. if that makes sense

  1167. well the Toldoth Yeshu

  1168. it's very interesting

  1169. it's a highly

  1170. negative

  1171. account

  1172. of Jesus

  1173. trying to portray him

  1174. as a

  1175. terrible

  1176. terrible person

  1177. but it explicitly

  1178. admits

  1179. that Jesus

  1180. had the power

  1181. to raise the dead

  1182. and that his

  1183. disciple

  1184. Peter

  1185. was able to

  1186. heal

  1187. in the name

  1188. of Jesus

  1189. or this source

  1190. the Jewish Talmud

  1191. this is earlier

  1192. 200 to 400 A.D.

  1193. again it has

  1194. traditions that are

  1195. probably even earlier

  1196. the Jewish Talmud

  1197. speaks about Jesus

  1198. and it mentions

1199. that he had the power

  1200. to heal people

  1201. porphyry

  1202. now we're moving

  1203. from Jewish

  1204. into pagan territory

  1205. porphyry

  1206. wrote around the year

  1207. 300 A.D.

  1208. we can date him

  1209. pretty precisely

  1210. and he was a

  1211. virulent

  1212. anti-Christian writer

  1213. he also

  1214. was perhaps

  1215. the most famous

  1216. philosopher

  1217. in the Roman Empire

  1218. at that time

  1219. and he wrote

  1220. an entire work

  1221. against Christians

  1222. he called

  1223. for Christians

  1224. to be persecuted

  1225. but in his writings

  1226. he also admitted

  1227. that Jesus

  1228. worked wonders

  1229. just like

  1230. the Bible

  1231. says

  1232. around the same

  1233. time

  1234. Heracles

  1235. was writing

  1236. as well

  1237. he was not

  1238. a philosopher

  1239. he was a

  1240. Roman governor

  1241. he was a very

  1242. powerful man

  1243. he called for

  1244. Christians to be

  1245. persecuted

  1246. and as a Roman

  1247. governor

  1248. he actually

  1249. had them

  1250. arrested

  1251. and executed

  1252. and he

  1253. like Porphyry

  1254. also wrote a book

  1255. against the Christians

  1256. and in this

  1257. just like with

  1258. Porphyry

  1259. he too

  1260. acknowledges

  1261. that Jesus

  1262. seems to have

  1263. worked

  1264. miracles

  1265. and let's

  1266. keep going

  1267. the Tosephtha

  1268. this is an

  1269. early Jewish

  1270. manual of

  1271. traditions

  1272. it talks

  1273. of a certain

  1274. James

  1275. whom it

  1276. calls

  1277. a disciple

  1278. of Jesus

  1279. who claimed

  1280. that he could

  1281. heal

  1282. in the name

  1283. of Jesus

  1284. and it

  1285. relates a

  1286. story

  1287. about how

  1288. a rabbi

  1289. desperately

  1290. tried to

  1291. get to

  1292. James

  1293. in order

  1294. to be

  1295. healed

  1296. because

  1297. he was

  1298. convinced

  1299. that James

  1300. truly had

  1301. this power

  1302. or the

  1303. oracle

  1304. of Hecate

  1305. Hecate

  1306. was a

  1307. goddess

  1308. a

  1309. Greco-Roman

  1310. goddess

  1311. and these

  1312. oracles

  1313. would

  1314. give out

  1315. statements

  1316. people would

  1317. come to

  1318. them

  1319. and make

  1320. an offering

  1321. and the

  1322. oracle

  1323. would give

  1324. out

  1325. advice

  1326. and the

  1327. oracle

  1328. Hecate

  1329. confessed

  1330. that Jesus

  1331. was immortal

  1332. it's one of

  1333. those oracles

  1334. that have been

  1335. preserved for

  1336. us

  1337. Celsus

  1338. writing around

  1339. the year

  1340. 175

  1341. here's another

  1342. anti-Christian

  1343. writer

  1344. he wrote

  1345. an entire

  1346. book

  1347. against the

  1348. Christians

  1349. and in it

  1350. he acknowledges

  1351. that Jesus

  1352. worked wonders

  1353. and that early

  1354. Christians had

  1355. authority

  1356. over demons

  1357. if we go to

  1358. the year

  1359. 137

  1360. to 140

  1361. Phlegon

  1362. Phlegon

  1363. is a

  1364. Greco-Roman

  1365. writer

  1366. he's a

  1367. chronographer

  1368. he's also

  1369. the fancy term

  1370. is also

  1371. a paradoxographer

  1372. he liked

  1373. cataloging

  1374. unusual

  1375. mysterious

  1376. or supernatural

  1377. happenings

  1378. and he's

  1379. writing in

  1380. 137

  1381. or 140

  1382. but he

  1383. talks about

  1384. a strange

  1385. an unusual

  1386. darkness

  1387. as well as

  1388. an earthquake

  1389. that occurred

  1390. in 33

  1391. AD

  1392. just like

  1393. the gospels

  1394. say happened

  1395. at the

  1396. crucifixion of

  1397. Jesus

  1398. Phlegon also

  1399. says elsewhere

  1400. he mentions

  1401. Jesus

  1402. and he says

  1403. that Jesus

  1404. correctly predicted

  1405. the future

  1406. again

  1407. just like

  1408. the gospels

  1409. say

  1410. moving earlier

  1411. around the year

  1412. 95

  1413. Josephus

  1414. he's a

  1415. Jewish historian

  1416. I've mentioned

  1417. his name

  1418. several times

  1419. he's got

  1420. a paragraph

  1421. about Jesus

  1422. and in it

  1423. he says

  1424. that Jesus

  1425. worked

  1426. miracles

  1427. and we

  1428. could perhaps

  1429. go even

  1430. a little

  1431. earlier

  1432. with a guy

  1433. named

  1434. Thalos

  1435. he wrote

  1436. between 50

  1437. and 100

  1438. AD

  1439. we're a little

  1440. unsure

  1441. of his

  1442. dates

  1443. and he

  1444. also reports

  1445. an unusual

  1446. darkness

  1447. and we

  1448. don't know

  1449. the context

  1450. of this

  1451. one

  1452. so this

  1453. one's a

  1454. little tentative

  1455. but he

  1456. seems to

  1457. have placed

  1458. this

  1459. around

  1460. the time

  1461. or around

  1462. the year

  1463. of Jesus'

  1464. crucifixion

  1465. as well

  1466. but we

  1467. still have

  1468. to talk

  1469. about

  1470. one of

  1471. the earliest

  1472. critics

  1473. of Christianity

  1474. and one

  1475. of the

  1476. greatest

  1477. someone

  1478. who murdered

  1479. Christians

  1480. and then

  1481. who became

  1482. a Christian

  1483. himself

  1484. and I'm

  1485. speaking

  1486. of someone

  1487. you all

  1488. know

  1489. of Saul

  1490. of Tarsus

  1491. he says

  1492. in his own

  1493. words that he

  1494. was trying

  1495. to destroy

  1496. the followers

  1497. of Jesus

  1498. but then

  1499. Jesus

  1500. appeared

  1501. to him

  1502. and demonstrated

  1503. his miraculous

  1504. power

  1505. and after

  1506. this Saul

  1507. of Tarsus

  1508. changed his

  1509. name to

  1510. Paul

  1511. and he

  1512. went on

  1513. to write

  1514. many of

  1515. the letters

  1516. of the

  1517. New Testament

  1518. and there

  1519. Paul talks

  1520. about how

  1521. he was a

  1522. persecutor

  1523. of Christians

  1524. and how

  1525. he was a

  1526. violent man

  1527. and how

  1528. he was a

  1529. witness of

  1530. the resurrected

  1531. Jesus

  1532. and after

  1533. many years

  1534. of ministry

  1535. and suffering

  1536. for the name

  1537. of Jesus

  1538. Paul was

  1539. executed

  1540. for his

  1541. faith in

  1542. Jesus

  1543. and we

  1544. can say

  1545. similar

  1546. things

  1547. about

  1548. others

  1549. who did

  1550. not

  1551. believe

  1552. in

  1553. Jesus

  1554. but then

  1555. changed

  1556. their

  1557. mind

  1558. after

  1559. Jesus

  1560. appeared

  1561. to them

  1562. people

  1563. like James

  1564. and Jude

  1565. whom the

  1566. Bible

  1567. testifies

  1568. did not

  1569. believe

  1570. in Jesus

  1571. when he

  1572. was

  1573. ministering

  1574. but who

  1575. were

  1576. persuaded

  1577. after

  1578. Jesus

  1579. was

  1580. resurrected

  1581. and he

  1582. appeared

  1583. to them

  1584. and these

  1585. two men

  1586. also went

  1587. on to

  1588. write

  1589. letters

  1590. in the

  1591. New

  1592. Testament

  1593. this

  1594. is

  1595. extraordinary

  1596. remember

  1597. that

  1598. ancient

  1599. authors

  1600. were

  1601. more

  1602. than

  1603. capable

  1604. of

  1605. denying

  1606. miracles

  1607. we see

  1608. this

  1609. for instance

  1610. with

  1611. Cicero

  1612. with the

  1613. Epicureans

  1614. with the

  1615. Atomists

  1616. the followers

  1617. of Democritus

  1618. with the

  1619. Jewish

  1620. Sadducees

  1621. all of whom

  1622. denied many

  1623. or even

  1624. all

  1625. supernatural

  1626. things

  1627. but Jesus

  1628. his

  1629. miracles

  1630. seem to

  1631. have been

  1632. so beyond

  1633. question

  1634. that non-Christians

  1635. and even

  1636. hostile

  1637. anti-Christians

  1638. admitted

  1639. that they

  1640. occurred

  1641. and some

  1642. of them

  1643. even seem

  1644. to have

  1645. become

  1646. Christians

  1647. themselves

  1648. so can

  1649. we trust

  1650. that the

  1651. New Testament

  1652. is true

  1653. and accurate

  1654. yes we

  1655. can

  1656. the New

  1657. Testament

  1658. is based

  1659. off of

  1660. eyewitness

  1661. testimony

  1662. and we

  1663. can trust

  1664. these

  1665. eyewitnesses

  1666. because they

  1667. don't seem

  1668. to have

  1669. a worldly

  1670. motive

  1671. to lie

  1672. they had

  1673. nothing

  1674. to gain

  1675. in fact

  1676. they risked

  1677. persecution

  1678. for their

  1679. claims

  1680. and

  1681. furthermore

  1682. their

  1683. own

  1684. disciples

  1685. suffered

  1686. the

  1687. same

  1688. and on

  1689. top of

  1690. that

  1691. the

  1692. claims

  1693. of the

  1694. eyewitnesses

  1695. can be

  1696. historically

  1697. verified

  1698. and we

  1699. can even

  1700. verify

  1701. their

  1702. miraculous

  1703. claims

  1704. and even

  1705. non-Christian

  1706. sources

  1707. admit

  1708. to many

  1709. of these

  1710. facts

  1711. but

  1712. if

  1713. this is

  1714. not

  1715. enough

  1716. for you

  1717. then

  1718. you

  1719. yourself

  1720. contest

  1721. the

  1722. authenticity

  1723. of Jesus

  1724. miraculous

  1725. powers

  1726. all

  1727. you

  1728. have

  1729. to

  1730. do

  1731. is

  1732. look

  1733. around

  1734. the

  1735. world

  1736. right

  1737. now

  1738. and

  1739. this

  1740. is

  1741. because

  1742. the

  1743. prophecies

  1744. of Jesus

  1745. Christ

  1746. contained

  1747. in the

  1748. New

  1749. Testament

  1750. are

  1751. being

  1752. remarkably

  1753. and

  1754. miraculously

  1755. fulfilled

  1756. among

  1757. us

  1758. for example

  1759. Jesus

  1760. predicted

  1761. in Matthew

  1762. 24

  1763. 14

  1764. he says

  1765. this

  1766. gospel

  1767. of the

  1768. kingdom

  1769. will be

  1770. preached

  1771. in the

  1772. whole

  1773. world

  1774. as a

  1775. testimony

  1776. to

  1777. all

  1778. nations

  1779. and

  1780. if

  1781. we

  1782. examine

  1783. our

  1784. world

  1785. today

  1786. we

  1787. see

  1788. that

  1789. there

  1790. is

  1791. no

  1792. other

  1793. message

  1794. on

  1795. earth

  1796. that

  1797. has

  1798. reached

  1799. so

  1800. many

  1801. people

  1802. there

  1803. is

  1804. no

  1805. message

  1806. that

  1807. has

  1808. gone

  1809. to

  1810. so

  1811. many

  1812. nations

  1813. and

  1814. so

  1815. many

  1816. countries

  1817. there

  1818. is

  1819. no

  1820. message

  1821. except

  1822. the

  1823. message

  1824. of

  1825. Jesus

  1826. that

  1827. has

  1828. been

  1829. translated

  1830. into

  1831. so

  1832. many

  1833. languages

  1834. and

  1835. has

  1836. been

  1837. adopted

  1838. by

  1839. so

  1840. many

  1841. cultures

  1842. and

  1843. has

  1844. changed

  1845. so

  1846. many

  1847. lives

  1848. Jesus

  1849. is

  1850. prophecy

  1851. is

  1852. being

  1853. to

  1854. this

  1855. and

  1856. keep

  1857. in

  1858. mind

  1859. that

  1860. when

  1861. Jesus

  1862. said

  1863. this

  1864. he

  1865. was

  1866. not

  1867. famous

  1868. or

  1869. powerful

  1870. or

  1871. popular

  1872. or

  1873. influential

  1874. when

  1875. he

  1876. predicted

  1877. these

  1878. things

  1879. he

  1880. was

  1881. a

  1882. member

  1883. of

  1884. the

  1885. underclass

  1886. a

  1887. carpenter

  1888. from

  1889. a

  1890. backwater

  1891. in

  1892. Galilee

  1893. and

  1894. he

  1895. predicted

  1896. that

  1897. his

  1898. message

  1899. would

  1900. go

  1901. into

  1902. all

  1903. the

  1904. world

  1905. and

  1906. so

  1907. far

  1908. it

  1909. has

  1910. spread

  1911. farther

  1912. than

  1913. any

  1914. other

  1915. and

  1916. against

  1917. all

  1918. odds

  1919. his

  1920. prophecy

  1921. is

  1922. being

  1923. fulfilled

  1924. Jesus

  1925. predicted

  1926. many

  1927. other

  1928. things

  1929. correctly

  1930. he

  1931. said

  1932. that

  1933. many

  1934. false

  1935. prophets

  1936. and

  1937. false

  1938. Christs

  1939. would

  1940. come

  1941. in

  1942. his

  1943. name

  1944. and

  1945. if

  1946. you

  1947. look

  1948. through

  1949. history

  1950. I

  1951. don't

  1952. think

  1953. there's

  1954. a

  1955. single

  1956. person

  1957. who

  1958. has

  1959. existed

  1960. who's

  1961. had

  1962. more

  1963. people

  1964. come

  1965. in

  1966. their

  1967. name

  1968. and

  1969. say

  1970. they

  1971. represent

  1972. them

  1973. or

  1974. they

  1975. are

  1976. them

  1977. Jesus

  1978. said

  1979. that

  1980. his

  1981. followers

  1982. would

  1983. be

  1984. brought

  1985. before

  1986. kings

  1987. and

  1988. rulers

  1989. and

  1990. all

  1991. these

  1992. things

  1993. have

  1994. happened

  1995. so

  1996. many

  1997. times

  1998. it

  1999. is

  2000. beyond

  2001. counting

  2002. and

  2003. Jesus

  2004. predicted

  2005. all

  2006. of

  2007. this

  2008. when

  2009. he

  2010. was

  2011. still

  2012. an

  2013. obscure

  2014. carpenter

  2015. from

  2016. Galilee

  2017. and

  2018. he

  2019. was

  2020. right

  2021. so

  2022. my

  2023. friends

  2024. I've

  2025. been

  2026. giving

  2027. many

  2028. reasons

  2029. why

  2030. the

  2031. New

  2032. Testament

  2033. is

  2034. worthy

  2035. of

  2036. our

  2037. trust

  2038. and

  2039. if

  2040. you're

  2041. interested

  2042. I'd

  2043. be

  2044. happy

  2045. to

  2046. talk

  2047. about

  2048. these

  2049. matters

  2050. afterwards

  2051. or

  2052. share

  2053. my

  2054. sources

  2055. of

  2056. information

  2057. with

  2058. you

  2059. as

  2060. well

  2061. but

  2062. if

  2063. you're

  2064. here

  2065. today

  2066. and

  2067. you're

  2068. still

  2069. wondering

  2070. about

  2071. the

  2072. person

  2073. of

  2074. Jesus

  2075. let

  2076. me

  2077. give

  2078. you

  2079. one

  2080. final

  2081. test

  2082. to

  2083. conduct

  2084. concerning

  2085. the

  2086. authenticity

  2087. of

  2088. Jesus

  2089. and

  2090. the

  2091. New

  2092. Testament

  2093. and

  2094. this

  2095. is

  2096. a

  2097. test

  2098. recommended

  2099. by

  2100. Jesus

  2101. himself

  2102. he

  2103. says

  2104. in

  2105. the

  2106. gospel

  2107. of

  2108. John

  2109. anyone

  2110. who

  2111. chooses

  2112. to do

  2113. the

  2114. will

  2115. of

  2116. God

  2117. will

  2118. find

  2119. out

  2120. whether

  2121. my

  2122. teaching

  2123. comes

  2124. from

  2125. God

  2126. or

  2127. whether

  2128. I

  2129. speak

  2130. on

  2131. my

  2132. own

  2133. my

  2134. friends

  2135. if

  2136. you

  2137. choose

  2138. to

  2139. do

  2140. the

  2141. will

  2142. of

  2143. God

  2144. Jesus

  2145. has

  2146. promised

  2147. that

  2148. you

  2149. will

  2150. find

  2151. that

  2152. his

  2153. teaching

  2154. comes

  2155. from

  2156. God

  2157. and

  2158. that

  2159. you

  2160. will

  2161. know

  2162. that

  2163. he

  2164. is

  2165. worthy

  2166. of

  2167. your

  2168. trust

  2169. let

  2170. me

  2171. end

  2172. in

  2173. prayer

  2174. and

  2175. then

  2176. we'll

  2177. take

  2178. some

  2179. questions

  2180. father

  2181. in

  2182. heaven

  2183. we

  2184. thank

  2185. you

  2186. that

  2187. you

  2188. sent

  2189. your

  2190. son

  2191. Jesus

  2192. to

  2193. minister

  2194. on

  2195. this

  2196. earth

  2197. to

  2198. preach

  2199. and

  2200. teach

  2201. to

  2202. work

  2203. miracles

  2204. and

  2205. signs

  2206. and

  2207. wonders

  2208. Lord

  2209. but

  2210. above

  2211. all

  2212. to

  2213. suffer

  2214. for

  2215. us

  2216. in

  2217. order

  2218. to

  2219. forgive

  2220. our

  2221. sins

  2222. we

  2223. thank

  2224. you

  2225. Lord

  2226. that

  2227. he

  2228. died

  2229. was

  2230. buried

  2231. and

  2232. three

  2233. days

  2234. later

  2235. rose

  2236. again

  2237. and

  2238. that

  2239. he

  2240. promises

  2241. that

  2242. he

  2243. will

  2244. raise

  2245. us

  2246. up

  2247. on

  2248. that

  2249. day

  2250. when

  2251. he

  2252. comes

  2253. in

  2254. glory

  2255. with

  2256. his

  2257. holy

  2258. angels

  2259. father

  2260. I

  2261. pray

  2262. that

  2263. you

  2264. would

  2265. increase

  2266. our

  2267. trust

  2268. in

  2269. your

  2270. word

  2271. that

  2272. you

  2273. would

  2274. help

  2275. us

  2276. to

  2277. grow

  2278. in

  2279. it

  2280. Lord

  2281. to

  2282. grow

  2283. in

  2284. in

  2285. the

  2286. fruits

  2287. that

  2288. Lord

  2289. help

  2290. us

  2291. to

  2292. forsake

  2293. evil

  2294. and

  2295. to

  2296. cling

  2297. to

  2298. what

  2299. is

  2300. good

  2301. to

  2302. repent

  2303. of

  2304. our

  2305. sins

  2306. to

  2307. minister

  2308. to

  2309. others

  2310. and

  2311. to

  2312. lay

  2313. our

  2314. lives

  2315. down

  2316. just

  2317. like

  2318. Jesus

  2319. did

  2320. for

  2321. us

  2322. we

  2323. pray

  2324. this

  2325. in

  2326. his

  2327. mighty

  2328. name

  2329. amen

  2330. all right

  2331. folks

  2332. we've

  2333. got

  2334. I

  2335. went

  2336. faster

  2337. than

  2338. I

  2339. thought

  2340. so

  2341. we've

  2342. got

  2343. we've

  2344. got

  2345. time

  2346. for

  2347. questions

  2348. if you

  2349. want

  2350. we

  2351. can

  2352. also

  2353. I

  2354. can

  2355. also

  2356. answer

  2357. questions

  2358. about

  2359. any

  2360. for

  2361. the

  2362. persecution

  2363. of

  2364. Christians

  2365. during

  2366. Rome

  2367. what

  2368. was

  2369. the

  2370. flash

  2371. point

  2372. about

  2373. why

  2374. the

  2375. Romans

  2376. persecuted

  2377. Christians

  2378. was it

  2379. charge

  2380. substitution

  2381. because

  2382. they

  2383. wouldn't

  2384. bow down

  2385. to the

  2386. the

  2387. Emperor

  2388. Augustus

  2389. and his

  2390. statues

  2391. was it

  2392. they were

  2393. scapegoating

  2394. them for

  2395. the fall

  2396. of Rome

  2397. what was

  2398. the reason

  2399. why

  2400. Christians

  2401. were

  2402. universally

  2403. despised

  2404. great

  2405. question

  2406. questions

  2407. why

  2408. were

  2409. the

  2410. Christians

  2411. persecuted

  2412. in

  2413. Rome

  2414. the

  2415. answer

  2416. is

  2417. kind

  2418. of

  2419. all

  2420. of

  2421. the

  2422. above

  2423. it

  2424. varies

  2425. at

  2426. different

  2427. times

  2428. in

  2429. different

  2430. places

  2431. so

  2432. the

  2433. Rome

  2434. we

  2435. think

  2436. of

  2437. Rome

  2438. as

  2439. this

  2440. dictatorship

  2441. where

  2442. everybody

  2443. follows

  2444. the

  2445. same

  2446. set

  2447. of

  2448. laws

  2449. and

  2450. that's

  2451. not

  2452. really

  2453. the

  2454. case

  2455. Roman

  2456. governors

  2457. had

  2458. a lot

  2459. of

  2460. latitude

  2461. and

  2462. there

  2463. were

  2464. local

  2465. customs

  2466. that

  2467. were

  2468. obeyed

  2469. and

  2470. even if

  2471. there were

  2472. certain

  2473. laws

  2474. Roman

  2475. governors

  2476. could

  2477. break

  2478. them

  2479. so

  2480. it

  2481. really

  2482. depends

  2483. but

  2484. in

  2485. general

  2486. there

  2487. were

  2488. a

  2489. number

  2490. of

  2491. reasons

  2492. so

  2493. one

  2494. was

  2495. that

  2496. there

  2497. were

  2498. a lot

  2499. of

  2500. vicious

  2501. rumors

  2502. circulating

  2503. about

  2504. Christians

  2505. they

  2506. Christians

  2507. were accused

  2508. of

  2509. cannibalism

  2510. of

  2511. incest

  2512. of

  2513. things

  2514. like

  2515. that

  2516. they

  2517. seem

  2518. like

  2519. bizarre

  2520. claims

  2521. but

  2522. when

  2523. you

  2524. think

  2525. when

  2526. people

  2527. hear

  2528. rumors

  2529. about

  2530. the

  2531. Eucharist

  2532. and

  2533. communion

  2534. and

  2535. how

  2536. people

  2537. eat

  2538. the

  2539. body

  2540. and

  2541. blood

  2542. of

  2543. Jesus

  2544. it

  2545. makes

  2546. a little

  2547. more

  2548. sense

  2549. why

  2550. those

  2551. rumors

  2552. would

  2553. go

  2554. out

  2555. as

  2556. far

  2557. as

  2558. incest

  2559. goes

  2560. Christians

  2561. would

  2562. counter-culturally

  2563. call

  2564. other

  2565. Christians

  2566. their

  2567. brother

  2568. or

  2569. sister

  2570. sometimes

  2571. you know

  2572. if

  2573. your

  2574. wife

  2575. or

  2576. husband

  2577. was

  2578. a

  2579. Christian

  2580. they

  2581. would

  2582. also

  2583. be

  2584. your

  2585. sister

  2586. or

  2587. brother

  2588. and

  2589. so

  2590. that

  2591. seems

  2592. to

  2593. be

  2594. where

  2595. those

  2596. claims

  2597. of

  2598. incest

  2599. came

  2600. from

  2601. these

  2602. of course

  2603. are

  2604. completely

  2605. unfounded

  2606. and

  2607. absurd

  2608. but

  2609. the

  2610. rumor mill

  2611. swirls

  2612. people

  2613. start

  2614. viewing

  2615. these

  2616. folks

  2617. as

  2618. terrible

  2619. and

  2620. in fact

  2621. we have

  2622. some

  2623. testimonies

  2624. there's

  2625. some

  2626. ancient

  2627. Christian

  2628. philosophers

  2629. who

  2630. say

  2631. I think

  2632. it's

  2633. Justin

  2634. the

  2635. philosopher

  2636. Justin

  2637. the

  2638. martyr

  2639. where

  2640. he

  2641. says

  2642. he

  2643. heard

  2644. all

  2645. these

  2646. horrible

  2647. things

  2648. about

  2649. Christians

  2650. and

  2651. how

  2652. terrible

  2653. they

  2654. were

  2655. but

  2656. then

  2657. he

  2658. saw

  2659. them

  2660. being

  2661. led

  2662. to

  2663. death

  2664. and

  2665. refusing

  2666. to

  2667. deny

  2668. their

  2669. faith

  2670. in

  2671. Jesus

  2672. and

  2673. he

  2674. realized

  2675. these

  2676. do not

  2677. who

  2678. would

  2679. be

  2680. doing

  2681. these

  2682. horrible

  2683. things

  2684. and

  2685. he

  2686. became a

  2687. Christian

  2688. to sacrifice

  2689. to the

  2690. Roman

  2691. gods

  2692. this

  2693. was

  2694. expected

  2695. of

  2696. all

  2697. people

  2698. in

  2699. Rome

  2700. now

  2701. sometimes

  2702. it

  2703. wasn't

  2704. a big

  2705. deal

  2706. sometimes

  2707. you

  2708. just

  2709. don't

  2710. go to

  2711. the

  2712. festival

  2713. where

  2714. they're

  2715. sacrificing

  2716. and

  2717. you're

  2718. just

  2719. viewed

  2720. as

  2721. kind

  2722. of

  2723. weird

  2724. but

  2725. other

  2726. times

  2727. you

  2728. could

  2729. get

  2730. in

  2731. really

  2732. severe

  2733. trouble

  2734. for

  2735. this

  2736. and

  2737. usually

  2738. for

  2739. most

  2740. people

  2741. it

  2742. wasn't

  2743. a

  2744. problem

  2745. because

  2746. they

  2747. would

  2748. just

  2749. even

  2750. if

  2751. they

  2752. worshipped

  2753. another

  2754. set

  2755. of

  2756. gods

  2757. they

  2758. were

  2759. polytheists

  2760. are

  2761. generally

  2762. okay

  2763. with

  2764. just

  2765. throwing

  2766. other

  2767. gods

  2768. into

  2769. the

  2770. mix

  2771. and

  2772. so

  2773. they

  2774. have

  2775. no

  2776. problem

  2777. worshipping

  2778. a

  2779. deified

  2780. Caesar

  2781. or

  2782. worshipping

  2783. Zeus

  2784. or

  2785. Jupiter

  2786. or

  2787. what

  2788. have

  2789. you

  2790. but

  2791. Christians

  2792. would

  2793. say

  2794. no

  2795. we

  2796. won't

  2797. do

  2798. that

  2799. and

  2800. that

  2801. would

  2802. get

  2803. them

  2804. into

  2805. a

  2806. lot

  2807. of

  2808. trouble

  2809. sometimes

  2810. the

  2811. only

  2812. other

  2813. group

  2814. that

  2815. seems

  2816. to

  2817. have

  2818. refused

  2819. to

  2820. do

  2821. that

  2822. the

  2823. only

  2824. other

  2825. large

  2826. group

  2827. were

  2828. the

  2829. Jews

  2830. but

  2831. Jews

  2832. often

  2833. had

  2834. like

  2835. an

  2836. agreement

  2837. with

  2838. the

  2839. Romans

  2840. that

  2841. they

  2842. didn't

  2843. have

  2844. to

  2845. do

  2846. that

  2847. and

  2848. at

  2849. the

  2850. same

  2851. time

  2852. Christians

  2853. would

  2854. be

  2855. refusing

  2856. to

  2857. do

  2858. it

  2859. often

  2860. you

  2861. have

  2862. Jewish

  2863. communities

  2864. loudly

  2865. proclaiming

  2866. that

  2867. these

  2868. Christians

  2869. were not

  2870. Jewish

  2871. and

  2872. were

  2873. doing

  2874. terrible

  2875. things

  2876. and

  2877. so

  2878. it

  2879. just

  2880. was

  2881. this

  2882. cyclic

  2883. effect

  2884. there

  2885. were

  2886. other

  2887. things

  2888. like

  2889. when

  2890. earthquakes

  2891. or

  2892. famine

  2893. would

  2894. hit

  2895. Rome

  2896. people

  2897. would

  2898. say

  2899. it's

  2900. the

  2901. Christians

  2902. the

  2903. Christian

  2904. to

  2905. the

  2906. lion

  2907. the

  2908. Christians

  2909. to

  2910. the

  2911. lion

  2912. and

  2913. they

  2914. would

  2915. round

  2916. them

  2917. up

  2918. similar

  2919. things

  2920. would

  2921. happen

  2922. that

  2923. remember

  2924. most

  2925. people

  2926. in

  2927. the

  2928. Roman

  2929. Empire

  2930. unless

  2931. you

  2932. were

  2933. a

  2934. male

  2935. citizen

  2936. which

  2937. in

  2938. the

  2939. early

  2940. part

  2941. of

  2942. the

  2943. Roman

  2944. Empire

  2945. was

  2946. you

  2947. were

  2948. a

  2949. great

  2950. minority

  2951. unless

  2952. you

  2953. were

  2954. a

  2955. male

  2956. citizen

  2957. you

  2958. didn't

  2959. really

  2960. have

  2961. many

  2962. rights

  2963. and

  2964. if

  2965. you

  2966. were

  2967. a

  2968. woman

  2969. or

  2970. you

  2971. were

  2972. the

  2973. wife

  2974. or

  2975. the

  2976. daughter

  2977. or

  2978. the

  2979. son

  2980. of

  2981. someone

  2982. who

  2983. is

  2984. not

  2985. yet

  2986. of

  2987. age

  2988. or

  2989. you

  2990. were

  2991. a

  2992. slave

  2993. then

  2994. your

  2995. father

  2996. had

  2997. authority

  2998. over

  2999. life

  3000. and death

  3001. and so

  3002. could

  3003. pretty

  3004. if

  3005. you

  3006. became

  3007. a

  3008. Christian

  3009. and

  3010. the

  3011. head

  3012. of

  3013. your

  3014. household

  3015. didn't

  3016. like

  3017. that

  3018. you

  3019. were

  3020. in

  3021. real

  3022. big

  3023. trouble

  3024. and

  3025. that

  3026. was

  3027. many

  3028. people

  3029. if not

  3030. most

  3031. people

  3032. could be

  3033. caught up

  3034. in that

  3035. and so

  3036. the

  3037. empire

  3038. wide

  3039. persecutions

  3040. where

  3041. you

  3042. have

  3043. this

  3044. empire

  3045. wide

  3046. scale

  3047. event

  3048. those

  3049. don't

  3050. happen

  3051. until

  3052. later

  3053. in

  3054. Christian

  3055. history

  3056. those

  3057. first

  3058. start

  3059. happening

  3060. around

  3061. the

  3062. year

  3063. 250

  3064. and

  3065. there's

  3066. several

  3067. empire

  3068. wide

  3069. persecutions

  3070. where

  3071. the

  3072. emperor

  3073. says

  3074. everybody's

  3075. got a

  3076. sacrifice

  3077. if not

  3078. you can

  3079. be

  3080. tortured

  3081. or

  3082. executed

  3083. and

  3084. you

  3085. actually

  3086. would

  3087. have

  3088. to

  3089. go

  3090. get

  3091. a

  3092. certificate

  3093. and

  3094. we

  3095. actually

  3096. have

  3097. some

  3098. of

  3099. these

  3100. certificates

  3101. today

  3102. still

  3103. remain

  3104. where

  3105. people

  3106. have

  3107. a

  3108. certificate

  3109. or

  3110. receipt

  3111. that

  3112. they

  3113. sacrifice

  3114. but

  3115. before

  3116. 250

  3117. there

  3118. were

  3119. more

  3120. local

  3121. persecutions

  3122. by

  3123. governors

  3124. or

  3125. mobs

  3126. or

  3127. things

  3128. like

  3129. that

  3130. so

  3131. it was

  3132. very

  3133. yes

  3134. what

  3135. about

  3136. the

  3137. Old

  3138. Testament

  3139. what

  3140. about

  3141. it

  3142. so

  3143. it depends

  3144. what you

  3145. mean

  3146. by

  3147. big

  3148. part

  3149. of

  3150. the

  3151. problem

  3152. with

  3153. the

  3154. Old

  3155. Testament

  3156. is

  3157. that

  3158. later

  3159. you

  3160. get

  3161. in

  3162. history

  3163. the

  3164. less

  3165. historical

  3166. sources

  3167. we

  3168. have

  3169. and

  3170. so

  3171. the

  3172. Old

  3173. Testament

  3174. goes

  3175. back

  3176. so

  3177. far

  3178. so

  3179. for

  3180. instance

  3181. Herodotus

  3182. is

  3183. usually

  3184. thought of

  3185. as

  3186. the

  3187. earliest

  3188. historian

  3189. to

  3190. write

  3191. and

  3192. he

  3193. wrote

  3194. in

  3195. like

  3196. 450

  3197. BC

  3198. or

  3199. something

  3200. like

  3201. that

  3202. and

  3203. that's

  3204. when

  3205. the

  3206. Old

  3207. Testament

  3208. ends

  3209. so

  3210. so

  3211. the

  3212. Old

  3213. Testament

  3214. goes

  3215. so

  3216. far

  3217. back

  3218. that

  3219. we

  3220. only

  3221. have

  3222. limited

  3223. number

  3224. of

  3225. historical

  3226. sources

  3227. to

  3228. use

  3229. some

  3230. of

  3231. them

  3232. are

  3233. good

  3234. like

  3235. in

  3236. certain

  3237. parts

  3238. of

  3239. Babylon

  3240. or

  3241. Egypt

  3242. we've

  3243. got

  3244. good

  3245. sources

  3246. but

  3247. in

  3248. most

  3249. parts

  3250. of

  3251. the

  3252. ancient

  3253. world

  3254. we

  3255. don't

  3256. have

  3257. hardly

  3258. any

  3259. and

  3260. so

  3261. there's

  3262. also

  3263. if you

  3264. carefully

  3265. read

  3266. the

  3267. Old

  3268. Testament

  3269. there's

  3270. huge

  3271. swaths

  3272. of it

  3273. like

  3274. in

  3275. Genesis

  3276. like

  3277. Abraham

  3278. Isaac

  3279. Jacob

  3280. these

  3281. are

  3282. just

  3283. semi

  3284. nomads

  3285. going

  3286. around

  3287. in

  3288. the

  3289. desert

  3290. I

  3291. mean

  3292. we

  3293. wouldn't

  3294. expect

  3295. to

  3296. find

  3297. anything

  3298. about

  3299. someone

  3300. like

  3301. that

  3302. from

  3303. 4,000

  3304. 3,000

  3305. years

  3306. ago

  3307. so

  3308. in

  3309. some

  3310. ways

  3311. we

  3312. do

  3313. have

  3314. some

  3315. fantastic

  3316. archaeological

  3317. discoveries

  3318. that

  3319. corroborate

  3320. certain

  3321. parts

  3322. of the

  3323. Old

  3324. Testament

  3325. we

  3326. also

  3327. have

  3328. gaps

  3329. where

  3330. we

  3331. just

  3332. don't

  3333. have

  3334. other

  3335. sources

  3336. the

  3337. sources

  3338. don't

  3339. really

  3340. exist

  3341. and

  3342. that's

  3343. to be

  3344. expected

  3345. I

  3346. mean

  3347. any

  3348. part

  3349. of

  3350. the

  3351. world

  3352. you

  3353. would

  3354. expect

  3355. that

  3356. in

  3357. 3000

  3358. BC

  3359. or

  3360. 1500

  3361. BC

  3362. but

  3363. then

  3364. we

  3365. do

  3366. have

  3367. places

  3368. where

  3369. the

  3370. big

  3371. one

  3372. is

  3373. probably

  3374. the

  3375. exodus

  3376. in

  3377. Egypt

  3378. where

  3379. the

  3380. Bible

  3381. talks

  3382. about

  3383. Hebrews

  3384. being

  3385. enslaved

  3386. by the

  3387. Egyptians

  3388. and then

  3389. these

  3390. terrible

  3391. plagues

  3392. coming

  3393. on

  3394. and then

  3395. hundreds

  3396. of

  3397. thousands

  3398. or even

  3399. like

  3400. a million

  3401. Hebrew

  3402. slaves

  3403. coming

  3404. out

  3405. of

  3406. Egypt

  3407. and

  3408. the

  3409. problem

  3410. is

  3411. that

  3412. we

  3413. don't

  3414. we

  3415. do

  3416. have

  3417. evidence

  3418. that

  3419. there

  3420. were

  3421. Semitic

  3422. or

  3423. West

  3424. Asian

  3425. slaves

  3426. in

  3427. Egypt

  3428. who

  3429. worked

  3430. as

  3431. bricklayers

  3432. and

  3433. so

  3434. roughly

  3435. there's

  3436. a

  3437. corroboration

  3438. there

  3439. we

  3440. do

  3441. have

  3442. other

  3443. bits

  3444. and

  3445. pieces

  3446. of

  3447. suggestive

  3448. evidence

  3449. there's

  3450. a

  3451. papyrus

  3452. from

  3453. Egypt

  3454. that

  3455. talks

  3456. about

  3457. these

  3458. terrible

  3459. plagues

  3460. being

  3461. visited

  3462. upon

  3463. them

  3464. that

  3465. sound

  3466. roughly

  3467. like

  3468. what

  3469. we

  3470. find

  3471. but

  3472. it's

  3473. hard

  3474. to

  3475. date

  3476. the

  3477. papyrus

  3478. it's

  3479. hard

  3480. to

  3481. know

  3482. it's

  3483. being

  3484. talked

  3485. about

  3486. and

  3487. then

  3488. to

  3489. have

  3490. a

  3491. million

  3492. people

  3493. going

  3494. through

  3495. the

  3496. desert

  3497. is

  3498. you

  3499. would

  3500. think

  3501. sources

  3502. would

  3503. mention

  3504. that

  3505. more

  3506. than

  3507. they

  3508. do

  3509. although

  3510. again

  3511. this

  3512. is

  3513. so

  3514. long

  3515. ago

  3516. so

  3517. there's

  3518. a couple

  3519. possibilities

  3520. one

  3521. is

  3522. that

  3523. the

  3524. Hebrew

  3525. in

  3526. the

  3527. Hebrew

  3528. Bible

  3529. the

  3530. numbers

  3531. that

  3532. are

  3533. used

  3534. sometimes

  3535. ancients

  3536. didn't

  3537. use

  3538. numbers

  3539. like

  3540. we

  3541. do

  3542. like

  3543. they

  3544. did

  3545. use

  3546. them

  3547. for

  3548. math

  3549. but

  3550. sometimes

  3551. they

  3552. had

  3553. deeper

  3554. meanings

  3555. like

  3556. the

  3557. number

  3558. 40

  3559. in

  3560. the

  3561. Bible

  3562. sometimes

  3563. it's

  3564. like

  3565. maybe

  3566. that's

  3567. not

  3568. a

  3569. mathematical

  3570. term

  3571. it's

  3572. a

  3573. general

  3574. term

  3575. so

  3576. some

  3577. people

  3578. think

  3579. that's

  3580. what

  3581. can

  3582. also

  3583. be

  3584. translated

  3585. as

  3586. clan

  3587. or

  3588. family

  3589. and

  3590. so

  3591. it

  3592. could

  3593. be

  3594. that

  3595. what's

  3596. going

  3597. on

  3598. here

  3599. is

  3600. that

  3601. it's

  3602. meant

  3603. to

  3604. say

  3605. 600

  3606. families

  3607. or

  3608. 600

  3609. clans

  3610. which

  3611. is

  3612. significantly

  3613. less

  3614. than

  3615. a

  3616. million

  3617. people

  3618. so

  3619. but

  3620. these

  3621. are

  3622. things

  3623. we're

  3624. still

  3625. waiting

  3626. to

  3627. discover

  3628. you've

  3629. seen

  3630. in

  3631. the

  3632. New

  3633. Testament

  3634. I

  3635. mean

  3636. if

  3637. we

  3638. gave

  3639. this

  3640. talk

  3641. 100

  3642. years

  3643. ago

  3644. Lysanius

  3645. the

  3646. Tetrarch

  3647. the

  3648. pool

  3649. of

  3650. Bethesda

  3651. all of

  3652. these

  3653. things

  3654. that

  3655. would

  3656. be

  3657. explicitly

  3658. contradicted

  3659. seemingly

  3660. by the

  3661. historical

  3662. record

  3663. but

  3664. later

  3665. excavations

  3666. have

  3667. discovered

  3668. that

  3669. actually

  3670. we've

  3671. either

  3672. misinterpreted

  3673. the

  3674. historical

  3675. record

  3676. or

  3677. sometimes

  3678. most of

  3679. the time

  3680. we've

  3681. interpreted

  3682. it

  3683. correctly

  3684. it's

  3685. just

  3686. there

  3687. was

  3688. another

  3689. event

  3690. or

  3691. there

  3692. was

  3693. something

  3694. else

  3695. that

  3696. happened

  3697. that

  3698. we

  3699. didn't

  3700. know

  3701. about

  3702. so

  3703. I

  3704. would

  3705. say

  3706. that

  3707. for

  3708. the

  3709. Old

  3710. Testament

  3711. it's

  3712. very

  3713. good

  3714. by

  3715. very

  3716. ancient

  3717. historical

  3718. standards

  3719. but

  3720. it's

  3721. not

  3722. as

  3723. good

  3724. as

  3725. the

  3726. New

  3727. Testament

  3728. which

  3729. is

  3730. you

  3731. would

  3732. expect

  3733. a

  3734. higher

  3735. level

  3736. of

  3737. corroboration

  3738. given

  3739. that

  3740. it's

  3741. earlier

  3742. in

  3743. time

  3744. yeah

  3745. so

  3746. we're

  3747. just

  3748. going

  3749. to

  3750. have

  3751. to

  3752. trust

  3753. God

  3754. guys

  3755. that

  3756. he's

  3757. faithful

  3758. yeah

  3759. you know

  3760. if it

  3761. was

  3762. good

  3763. enough

  3764. for

  3765. Jesus

  3766. it's

  3767. good

  3768. enough

  3769. for

  3770. me

  3771. yeah

  3772. you

  3773. mentioned

  3774. really

  3775. at

  3776. the

  3777. beginning

  3778. this

  3779. talk

  3780. about

  3781. the

  3782. resurrection

  3783. as

  3784. an

  3785. event

  3786. that

  3787. banks

  3788. extraordinary

  3789. evidence

  3790. is

  3791. there

  3792. any

  3793. plan

  3794. down

  3795. the

  3796. pipe

  3797. for

  3798. a

  3799. class

  3800. about

  3801. that

  3802. oh

  3803. we

  3804. could

  3805. do

  3806. that

  3807. yeah

  3808. yeah

  3809. it's

  3810. class

  3811. about

  3812. the

  3813. resurrection

  3814. yes

  3815. I

  3816. love

  3817. looking

  3818. at

  3819. the

  3820. five

  3821. or

  3822. six

  3823. accounts

  3824. of

  3825. the

  3826. resurrection

  3827. that

  3828. we

  3829. have

  3830. in

  3831. the

  3832. Bible

  3833. I

  3834. didn't

  3835. have

  3836. time

  3837. to

  3838. bring

  3839. that

  3840. up

  3841. but

  3842. people

  3843. will

  3844. often

  3845. claim

  3846. that

  3847. when

  3848. you

  3849. read

  3850. the

  3851. accounts

  3852. of

  3853. Jesus

  3854. resurrection

  3855. so

  3856. you

  3857. get

  3858. Matthew

  3859. Mark

  3860. Luke

  3861. and

  3862. John

  3863. give

  3864. an

  3865. account

  3866. Paul

  3867. gives

  3868. an

  3869. account

  3870. and

  3871. Luke

  3872. gives

  3873. an

  3874. account

  3875. again

  3876. in

  3877. the

  3878. book

  3879. of

  3880. Acts

  3881. so

  3882. there's

  3883. kind

  3884. of

  3885. six

  3886. of

  3887. these

  3888. and

  3889. people

  3890. will

  3891. claim

  3892. that

  3893. these

  3894. are

  3895. irreconcilable

  3896. with

  3897. one

  3898. another

  3899. and

  3900. they

  3901. are

  3902. inherently

  3903. contradictory

  3904. and

  3905. I

  3906. think

  3907. actually

  3908. it's

  3909. quite

  3910. the

  3911. opposite

  3912. I

  3913. think

  3914. they

  3915. actually

  3916. work

  3917. together

  3918. very

  3919. well

  3920. and

  3921. are

  3922. what

  3923. you

  3924. would

  3925. expect

  3926. if you

  3927. watch

  3928. true

  3929. crime

  3930. shows

  3931. and

  3932. detective

  3933. stories

  3934. and

  3935. people

  3936. have

  3937. different

  3938. versions

  3939. of

  3940. events

  3941. it

  3942. sounds

  3943. exactly

  3944. like

  3945. that

  3946. where

  3947. people

  3948. are

  3949. saying

  3950. stuff

  3951. and

  3952. the

  3953. way

  3954. they're

  3955. portraying

  3956. events

  3957. is

  3958. individual

  3959. from

  3960. their

  3961. perspective

  3962. but

  3963. they

  3964. also

  3965. complement

  3966. one

  3967. another

  3968. very

  3969. well

  3970. we

  3971. can

  3972. talk

  3973. more

  3974. about

  3975. that

  3976. if

  3977. five

  3978. people

  3979. for

  3980. me

  3981. are

  3982. saying

  3983. the

  3984. same

  3985. thing

  3986. exactly

  3987. word

  3988. for

  3989. word

  3990. for

  3991. me

  3992. they're

  3993. lying

  3994. they're

  3995. colluding

  3996. I know

  3997. there's

  3998. a great

  3999. if we

  4000. do a

  4001. class

  4002. I'll

  4003. bring

  4004. this

  4005. up

  4006. there's

  4007. a

  4008. wonderful

  4009. article

  4010. do you

  4011. remember

  4012. that

  4013. famous

  4014. picture

  4015. it's

  4016. called

  4017. the

  4018. tank

  4019. man

  4020. picture

  4021. in

  4022. Tiananmen

  4023. square

  4024. in

  4025. the

  4026. 80s

  4027. where

  4028. that

  4029. man

  4030. is

  4031. standing

  4032. in

  4033. front

  4034. of

  4035. the

  4036. tanks

  4037. well

  4038. the

  4039. New

  4040. York

  4041. Times

  4042. did

  4043. a

  4044. 30

  4045. or

  4046. four

  4047. pictures

  4048. by

  4049. four

  4050. different

  4051. photographers

  4052. of

  4053. that

  4054. man

  4055. and

  4056. they

  4057. all

  4058. show

  4059. slightly

  4060. different

  4061. perspectives

  4062. and

  4063. the

  4064. New

  4065. York

  4066. Times

  4067. went

  4068. and

  4069. interviewed

  4070. each

  4071. of

  4072. those

  4073. photographers

  4074. like

  4075. 30

  4076. years

  4077. later

  4078. and

  4079. was

  4080. like

  4081. tell

  4082. us

  4083. what

  4084. happened

  4085. and

  4086. then

  4087. they

  4088. each

  4089. wrote

  4090. a

  4091. paragraph

  4092. or two

  4093. about

  4094. what

  4095. happened

  4096. and

  4097. comparing

  4098. these

  4099. four

  4100. together

  4101. it

  4102. was

  4103. amazing

  4104. like

  4105. one

  4106. of

  4107. them

  4108. says

  4109. the

  4110. police

  4111. came

  4112. and

  4113. took

  4114. them

  4115. away

  4116. another

  4117. says

  4118. people

  4119. from

  4120. the

  4121. crowd

  4122. came

  4123. and

  4124. took

  4125. the

  4126. man

  4127. away

  4128. another

  4129. says

  4130. it

  4131. was

  4132. the

  4133. secret

  4134. police

  4135. that

  4136. came

  4137. and

  4138. took

  4139. him

  4140. away

  4141. and

  4142. you

  4143. start

  4144. thinking

  4145. like

  4146. well

  4147. if it

  4148. was

  4149. the

  4150. secret

  4151. police

  4152. they

  4153. would

  4154. have

  4155. looked

  4156. like

  4157. people

  4158. from

  4159. the

  4160. crowd

  4161. and

  4162. one

  4163. guy

  4164. says

  4165. he

  4166. was

  4167. holding

  4168. bags

  4169. another

  4170. says

  4171. he

  4172. was

  4173. only

  4174. holding

  4175. a

  4176. bag

  4177. you

  4178. know

  4179. plural

  4180. verse

  4181. singular

  4182. and

  4183. you

  4184. look

  4185. at

  4186. the

  4187. pictures

  4188. and

  4189. some

  4190. pictures

  4191. it

  4192. looks

  4193. like

  4194. he

  4195. is

  4196. holding

  4197. one

  4198. bag

  4199. but

  4200. other

  4201. pictures

  4202. it

  4203. is

  4204. like

  4205. no

  4206. he

  4207. has

  4208. a

  4209. clump

  4210. of

  4211. bags

  4212. right

  4213. there

  4214. and

  4215. so

  4216. all

  4217. of

  4218. these

  4219. they

  4220. work

  4221. together

  4222. and

  4223. it's

  4224. exactly

  4225. I

  4226. think

  4227. it

  4228. lines up

  4229. with

  4230. those

  4231. photographers

  4232. in Tiananmen

  4233. Square

  4234. I

  4235. think

  4236. the

  4237. testimony

  4238. ends

  4239. up

  4240. like

  4241. that

  4242. where

  4243. they

  4244. compliment

  4245. and

  4246. actually

  4247. inform

  4248. one

  4249. another

  4250. instead

  4251. of

  4252. contradict

  4253. one

  4254. another

  4255. there

  4256. was

  4257. a

  4258. tank

  4259. there

  4260. was

  4261. a

  4262. guy

  4263. and

  4264. there

  4265. was

  4266. a

  4267. tank

  4268. yeah

  4269. exactly

  4270. yeah

  4271. exactly

  4272. exactly

  4273. yeah

  4274. other

  4275. questions

  4276. Amos

  4277. so you

  4278. talk a lot

  4279. about how

  4280. there's

  4281. corroboration

  4282. between

  4283. the Bible

  4284. and

  4285. early

  4286. secular

  4287. and

  4288. Christian

  4289. writers

  4290. and

  4291. in terms

  4292. of

  4293. what

  4294. they

  4295. said

  4296. helps

  4297. establish

  4298. the

  4299. credibility

  4300. of the

  4301. New

  4302. Testament

  4303. from

  4304. independent

  4305. review

  4306. perspective

  4307. but I'm

  4308. wondering

  4309. is there

  4310. content

  4311. from those

  4312. other

  4313. sources

  4314. where we

  4315. might learn

  4316. interesting

  4317. things

  4318. that are

  4319. credible

  4320. about

  4321. Jesus

  4322. or the

  4323. early

  4324. Christians

  4325. that

  4326. would be

  4327. interesting

  4328. not on

  4329. par with

  4330. the New

  4331. Testament

  4332. which

  4333. might

  4334. there

  4335. are more

  4336. stories

  4337. about

  4338. Jesus

  4339. or the

  4340. apostles

  4341. that

  4342. stated

  4343. without

  4344. putting it

  4345. on par

  4346. with the

  4347. New

  4348. Testament

  4349. but which

  4350. in principle

  4351. one could

  4352. do

  4353. maybe a

  4354. sermon

  4355. on it

  4356. or

  4357. I don't

  4358. know

  4359. yeah

  4360. so the

  4361. question is

  4362. do we have

  4363. other information

  4364. about the

  4365. New Testament

  4366. or New

  4367. Testament

  4368. people

  4369. outside of

  4370. the New

  4371. Testament

  4372. that we

  4373. could

  4374. that would

  4375. be edifying

  4376. for us

  4377. or useful

  4378. for us

  4379. to some

  4380. degree

  4381. yes

  4382. yes

  4383. there is

  4384. and I

  4385. would say

  4386. that those

  4387. come in

  4388. two forms

  4389. so one

  4390. way

  4391. is that

  4392. sometimes

  4393. we get

  4394. evidence

  4395. from these

  4396. external

  4397. sources

  4398. which

  4399. doesn't

  4400. give us

  4401. new

  4402. information

  4403. about

  4404. something

  4405. or a

  4406. person

  4407. or something

  4408. that actually

  4409. happened

  4410. but helps

  4411. us understand

  4412. an event

  4413. in the New

  4414. Testament

  4415. better

  4416. so for

  4417. example

  4418. this is

  4419. an easy

  4420. example

  4421. if you

  4422. read

  4423. the

  4424. ancient

  4425. historian

  4426. Josephus

  4427. he

  4428. covers

  4429. the

  4430. history

  4431. of the

  4432. Jewish

  4433. people

  4434. in the

  4435. first century

  4436. AD

  4437. he also

  4438. was from

  4439. the first

  4440. century

  4441. AD

  4442. and you'll

  4443. notice

  4444. that something

  4445. he talks

  4446. about

  4447. again

  4448. and again

  4449. and again

  4450. is that

  4451. the Jewish

  4452. people

  4453. were horribly

  4454. oppressed

  4455. by taxes

  4456. they're

  4457. constantly

  4458. arguing

  4459. about them

  4460. how should

  4461. we pay

  4462. this

  4463. should

  4464. we not

  4465. pay

  4466. this

  4467. it's a

  4468. huge

  4469. huge

  4470. hot

  4471. button

  4472. issue

  4473. and you

  4474. take that

  4475. and you

  4476. read

  4477. where you've

  4478. got these

  4479. Pharisees

  4480. these sneaky

  4481. Pharisees

  4482. coming up

  4483. to Jesus

  4484. trying to

  4485. trap him

  4486. with this

  4487. question

  4488. about should

  4489. I pay

  4490. taxes to

  4491. Caesar

  4492. or not

  4493. and you

  4494. realize

  4495. that they

  4496. are asking

  4497. him like

  4498. the most

  4499. loaded

  4500. possible

  4501. question

  4502. in public

  4503. to try

  4504. and catch

  4505. him

  4506. and there's

  4507. numerous

  4508. examples

  4509. of that

  4510. where we

  4511. will find

  4512. that

  4513. something

  4514. that we

  4515. understand

  4516. I mean

  4517. we know

  4518. they were

  4519. trying to

  4520. catch him

  4521. with that

  4522. tax

  4523. question

  4524. but it

  4525. really

  4526. brings

  4527. up the

  4528. level of

  4529. tension

  4530. when you

  4531. read that

  4532. so there's

  4533. various things

  4534. like that

  4535. that help

  4536. us

  4537. but in

  4538. terms of

  4539. like do

  4540. we have

  4541. more

  4542. information

  4543. about

  4544. Jesus

  4545. or the

  4546. disciples

  4547. that we

  4548. don't

  4549. have

  4550. in the

  4551. New

  4552. Testament

  4553. that

  4554. so I

  4555. had that

  4556. quote

  4557. it's

  4558. many slides

  4559. ago

  4560. so I

  4561. probably

  4562. won't be

  4563. able to

  4564. get there

  4565. but that

  4566. quote by

  4567. Ignatius

  4568. of Antioch

  4569. where he

  4570. that was

  4571. I lost

  4572. the whole

  4573. thing

  4574. where

  4575. he talks

  4576. about

  4577. Jesus

  4578. appearing

  4579. to

  4580. Peter

  4581. that

  4582. is

  4583. probably

  4584. some of

  4585. the closest

  4586. we'll get

  4587. to a

  4588. story

  4589. about

  4590. Jesus

  4591. that

  4592. may not

  4593. be in

  4594. the New

  4595. Testament

  4596. but that

  4597. may actually

  4598. be accurate

  4599. although

  4600. you could

  4601. say that

  4602. he's

  4603. here talking

  4604. about what

  4605. John or

  4606. Luke talked

  4607. about

  4608. because

  4609. John or

  4610. Luke

  4611. especially

  4612. Luke talks

  4613. about something

  4614. pretty similar

  4615. to this

  4616. but Ignatius

  4617. may not be

  4618. getting it

  4619. from Luke

  4620. at all

  4621. he may

  4622. just be

  4623. telling it

  4624. like he

  4625. heard

  4626. from

  4627. Peter

  4628. there's

  4629. another

  4630. example

  4631. so

  4632. if you

  4633. read

  4634. really

  4635. carefully

  4636. through

  4637. the

  4638. Bible

  4639. in the

  4640. resurrection

  4641. sequence

  4642. there's

  4643. a mention

  4644. where

  4645. where

  4646. no

  4647. it's in

  4648. 1 Corinthians

  4649. Paul mentions

  4650. that Jesus

  4651. appeared to

  4652. James

  4653. but we

  4654. don't have

  4655. any account

  4656. of that

  4657. at all

  4658. and

  4659. there is

  4660. a document

  4661. that just

  4662. talks about

  4663. how it

  4664. happened

  4665. I don't

  4666. know if we

  4667. should trust

  4668. that though

  4669. it might be

  4670. like a

  4671. much later

  4672. legend

  4673. that's trying

  4674. to fill

  4675. in the

  4676. accounts

  4677. we do

  4678. have

  4679. we do

  4680. have

  4681. I'm just

  4682. scanning my

  4683. brain for more

  4684. Jesus stuff

  4685. before I move

  4686. to the

  4687. disciples

  4688. okay here's

  4689. another one

  4690. there's another

  4691. ancient Christian

  4692. writer

  4693. his name is

  4694. Justin the

  4695. philosopher

  4696. Justin Martyr

  4697. whom I

  4698. mentioned once

  4699. he mentions

  4700. that when

  4701. Jesus was

  4702. baptized

  4703. that there

  4704. was a light

  4705. that appeared

  4706. also

  4707. so sometimes

  4708. you get these

  4709. little things

  4710. like I

  4711. don't know

  4712. the spirit

  4713. comes down

  4714. like a

  4715. dove

  4716. and then

  4717. this light

  4718. is on the

  4719. water

  4720. I don't

  4721. know

  4722. I mean

  4723. maybe

  4724. maybe that

  4725. happened

  4726. most of the

  4727. extra stuff

  4728. we know

  4729. is about

  4730. the disciples

  4731. and that's

  4732. where we get

  4733. more stuff

  4734. for instance

  4735. according to

  4736. very early

  4737. Christian tradition

  4738. Simon the

  4739. magician

  4740. Simon Magus

  4741. that was not

  4742. the end of

  4743. Simon Magus

  4744. in the book

  4745. of Acts

  4746. he went on

  4747. to oppose

  4748. the apostles

  4749. especially Peter

  4750. he even went

  4751. to Rome

  4752. to track

  4753. Peter down

  4754. that's said

  4755. again and

  4756. again

  4757. we know

  4758. that John

  4759. the disciple

  4760. the apostle

  4761. went to

  4762. Ephesus

  4763. and

  4764. Irenaeus

  4765. gives us

  4766. a story

  4767. about John

  4768. Irenaeus

  4769. was a disciple

  4770. of Polycarp

  4771. who was a

  4772. disciple of

  4773. John

  4774. if that makes

  4775. sense

  4776. and so

  4777. he's telling

  4778. us this

  4779. kind of

  4780. second hand

  4781. story

  4782. that he

  4783. heard about

  4784. John

  4785. about how

  4786. he was

  4787. going into

  4788. you know

  4789. in the Roman

  4790. Empire

  4791. they would

  4792. have these

  4793. communal

  4794. bath houses

  4795. where you

  4796. would go

  4797. in and

  4798. bathe

  4799. and that

  4800. John

  4801. was in

  4802. there

  4803. and this

  4804. heretic

  4805. named

  4806. Serentis

  4807. showed up

  4808. and he

  4809. quickly ran

  4810. out and

  4811. said we

  4812. got to

  4813. get away

  4814. from this

  4815. guy

  4816. so stuff

  4817. like that

  4818. you know

  4819. they do

  4820. they are

  4821. interesting

  4822. these stories

  4823. about the

  4824. apostles

  4825. you know

  4826. you have

  4827. to be

  4828. careful

  4829. because so

  4830. many of

  4831. these stories

  4832. are much

  4833. later

  4834. and we

  4835. just don't

  4836. know if

  4837. they're

  4838. accurate

  4839. or not

  4840. so what

  4841. is the

  4842. problem

  4843. in simple

  4844. words with

  4845. the Gnostic

  4846. Gospels

  4847. you should

  4848. have come

  4849. to the

  4850. class two

  4851. weeks ago

  4852. you didn't

  4853. make the

  4854. cut

  4855. yes

  4856. great

  4857. question

  4858. so the

  4859. problem with

  4860. them

  4861. is that

  4862. first of all

  4863. the Gnostics

  4864. most people

  4865. aren't aware

  4866. of this

  4867. the Gnostics

  4868. accepted

  4869. the canon

  4870. of the

  4871. mainstream

  4872. church

  4873. they just

  4874. added to

  4875. it

  4876. so they're

  4877. not really

  4878. rejecting

  4879. stuff

  4880. they're just

  4881. adding to

  4882. this

  4883. the problem

  4884. with it

  4885. is that

  4886. they don't

  4887. seem to

  4888. have any

  4889. grounding

  4890. whatsoever

  4891. in first

  4892. century

  4893. Jewish

  4894. history

  4895. they seem

  4896. to be

  4897. written

  4898. like

  4899. Jesus

  4900. from a

  4901. much later

  4902. Greek

  4903. philosophical

  4904. background

  4905. so all

  4906. the stuff

  4907. that we

  4908. just did

  4909. with the

  4910. New Testament

  4911. where we're

  4912. looking at

  4913. names,

  4914. dates,

  4915. places,

  4916. events,

  4917. happenings

  4918. can't do

  4919. that with

  4920. the Gnostic

  4921. Gospels

  4922. another thing

  4923. is that

  4924. contrary to

  4925. popular

  4926. perception

  4927. the vast

  4928. majority

  4929. of Gnostic

  4930. Gospels

  4931. are not

  4932. even

  4933. accounts

  4934. of Jesus

  4935. life

  4936. they don't

  4937. even

  4938. pretend

  4939. to be

  4940. they're

  4941. dialogues

  4942. of a

  4943. risen

  4944. savior

  4945. where he

  4946. has this

  4947. extended

  4948. dialogue

  4949. or it's

  4950. just a

  4951. sermon

  4952. or it's

  4953. a letter

  4954. so most

  4955. of them

  4956. don't even

  4957. claim to

  4958. be accounts

  4959. of Jesus

  4960. life

  4961. they are

  4962. just

  4963. theological

  4964. musings

  4965. other

  4966. reasons

  4967. why

  4968. is that

  4969. there's

  4970. no evidence

  4971. that the

  4972. people who

  4973. the titles

  4974. of the

  4975. Gospels

  4976. are ascribed

  4977. that they

  4978. actually wrote

  4979. them

  4980. so like

  4981. Gospel of

  4982. Mary

  4983. Gospel of

  4984. Peter

  4985. there's no

  4986. evidence that

  4987. they wrote

  4988. these

  4989. scholars are

  4990. united

  4991. in believing

  4992. these are

  4993. from the

  4994. second or

  4995. third

  4996. centuries

  4997. and in

  4998. fact

  4999. that

  5000. ancient

  5001. critic

  5002. Porphyry

  5003. whom I've

  5004. mentioned a

  5005. bunch of

  5006. times

  5007. he talks

  5008. about the

  5009. Gnostics

  5010. and he

  5011. says

  5012. oh yeah

  5013. they're just

  5014. making up

  5015. false titles

  5016. for these

  5017. things

  5018. but then

  5019. when he's

  5020. dealing with

  5021. the four

  5022. Gospels

  5023. and the

  5024. writings of

  5025. the New

  5026. Testament

  5027. he doesn't

  5028. say that

  5029. he seems

  5030. to accept

  5031. that they're

  5032. accurate

  5033. so

  5034. they don't

  5035. seem rooted

  5036. in Judaism

  5037. at all

  5038. to any

  5039. degree

  5040. they can't

  5041. be historically

  5042. verified

  5043. they seem

  5044. to be

  5045. written

  5046. at a

  5047. very late

  5048. date

  5049. they follow

  5050. they're all

  5051. united

  5052. behind this

  5053. Gnostic

  5054. myth

  5055. about how

  5056. you need

  5057. to have

  5058. this

  5059. knowledge

  5060. in order

  5061. to come

  5062. to salvation

  5063. and

  5064. it contradicts

  5065. Judaism

  5066. I mean

  5067. most of

  5068. them have

  5069. this idea

  5070. that

  5071. the creator

  5072. God

  5073. is evil

  5074. and

  5075. when you

  5076. read

  5077. Genesis

  5078. God

  5079. makes

  5080. everything

  5081. good

  5082. they've

  5083. got to

  5084. do a lot

  5085. of

  5086. hermeneutical

  5087. running around

  5088. to get around

  5089. that

  5090. or they'll

  5091. just reject

  5092. the passage

  5093. and it

  5094. just seems

  5095. the idea

  5096. that Jesus

  5097. or the

  5098. apostles

  5099. these Jews

  5100. from first

  5101. century

  5102. Palestine

  5103. would have

  5104. believed

  5105. that the

  5106. Old Testament

  5107. God

  5108. was bad

  5109. it just

  5110. doesn't

  5111. make sense

  5112. it seems

  5113. much more

  5114. like

  5115. someone

  5116. who's

  5117. following

  5118. Platonic

  5119. philosophy

  5120. who believes

  5121. the material

  5122. world is

  5123. evil

  5124. that's what

  5125. seems like

  5126. what's going

  5127. on here

  5128. and I think

  5129. that is what's

  5130. going on

  5131. is that

  5132. they're trying

  5133. to take

  5134. the teachings

  5135. of Jesus

  5136. and mash

  5137. them together

  5138. with Greek

  5139. philosophy

  5140. and this

  5141. is kind

  5142. of what

  5143. what's

  5144. coming out

  5145. yes

  5146. that's a

  5147. great question

  5148. let me make

  5149. a comment

  5150. first I

  5151. just want to

  5152. emphasize

  5153. how privileged

  5154. and blessed

  5155. we are

  5156. if you go

  5157. back even

  5158. 100 years

  5159. ago people

  5160. didn't know

  5161. the stuff

  5162. we know

  5163. if you go

  5164. back 500

  5165. years ago

  5166. the only

  5167. test you

  5168. could do

  5169. was that

  5170. last test

  5171. that Jesus

  5172. said

  5173. if you

  5174. choose to

  5175. do the

  5176. will of

  5177. God you

  5178. will know

  5179. that I

  5180. come from

  5181. the Father

  5182. because if

  5183. you're living

  5184. in the

  5185. middle of

  5186. some far

  5187. off place

  5188. and you

  5189. can't read

  5190. or write

  5191. there's really

  5192. nothing you

  5193. can do

  5194. when you're

  5195. presented with

  5196. the gospel

  5197. message

  5198. other than

  5199. seek God's

  5200. guidance

  5201. directly

  5202. and so

  5203. we're in

  5204. this position

  5205. where we

  5206. have all

  5207. this stuff

  5208. that most

  5209. Christians

  5210. throughout most

  5211. of history

  5212. didn't have

  5213. some of the

  5214. earlier ones

  5215. might have had

  5216. this kind of

  5217. stuff

  5218. but they were

  5219. facing horrible

  5220. persecution and

  5221. death and

  5222. everything

  5223. so it brings up

  5224. a good question

  5225. of like what

  5226. do we do

  5227. and I think

  5228. we follow

  5229. Jesus

  5230. we see what

  5231. he wants

  5232. us to

  5233. do

  5234. what is

  5235. our

  5236. we each

  5237. have our

  5238. own

  5239. callings

  5240. and we

  5241. discern from

  5242. the Lord

  5243. what that

  5244. is and we

  5245. carry our

  5246. cross as best

  5247. we can

  5248. humbly

  5249. knowing that

  5250. I think

  5251. God is

  5252. going to

  5253. hold us

  5254. to the

  5255. standard of

  5256. the things

  5257. he's given

  5258. to us

  5259. and he's

  5260. given us

  5261. a lot

  5262. I also

  5263. think that

  5264. we should

  5265. always be

  5266. careful

  5267. I've mentioned

  5268. this a couple

  5269. times in my

  5270. other classes

  5271. but that

  5272. this information

  5273. that I presented

  5274. I mean it's

  5275. great it's

  5276. wonderful this

  5277. is my career

  5278. like I love

  5279. this stuff

  5280. but this

  5281. this doesn't

  5282. really get

  5283. at Jesus

  5284. directly in

  5285. order to get

  5286. at Jesus

  5287. directly you

  5288. got to know

  5289. him and

  5290. that's what

  5291. matters and

  5292. so some of

  5293. this information

  5294. can be extremely

  5295. helpful for

  5296. people and

  5297. can bolster

  5298. their faith but

  5299. other people

  5300. work differently

  5301. for others

  5302. you know it

  5303. doesn't it's

  5304. not exciting

  5305. for them

  5306. and ultimately

  5307. God

  5308. following Christ

  5309. is not about

  5310. how much you

  5311. know or even

  5312. how certain

  5313. you are of

  5314. these little

  5315. facts it's

  5316. you know

  5317. Jesus on that

  5318. day he's

  5319. going to ask

  5320. do you know

  5321. me and

  5322. that's what we

  5323. want to keep

  5324. in mind

  5325. seek him

  5326. and this

  5327. is a

  5328. important

  5329. these are

  5330. important things

  5331. but they're

  5332. only stepping

  5333. stones to

  5334. the ultimate

  5335. goal

  5336. yeah

  5337. yes absolutely

  5338. absolutely

  5339. yeah

  5340. I agree with

  5341. that

  5342. we've gone

  5343. over

  5344. I'm happy to

  5345. answer more

  5346. questions but if

  5347. you got to go

  5348. you got to go

  5349. but otherwise

  5350. thanks for

  5351. coming I

  5352. think we

  5353. have one

  5354. more class

  5355. right John

  5356. what's the

  5357. topic on it

  5358. we're going to

  5359. be looking at

  5360. given all these

  5361. things about the

  5362. scriptures how

  5363. how do they come

  5364. to make a

  5365. difference in our

  5366. lives so we're

  5367. going to look

  5368. particularly at

  5369. how the word of

  5370. Christ the

  5371. gospels can come

  5372. to dwell in us

  5373. richly and

  5374. transforming us

  5375. particularly at

  5376. meditation it's

  5377. kind of the

  5378. capstone in

  5379. application of

  5380. these things so

  5381. yeah all right

  5382. stay tuned how

  5383. to have the word

  5384. of Christ come

  5385. to the world

  5386. we wish

  5387. all right thank

  5388. you so much

  5389. everyone
